Experimental Full Network Nonlocality with Independent Sources and Strict Locality Constraints

Nonlocality arising in networks composed of several independent sources gives rise to phenomena radically different from that in standard Bell scenarios. Over the years, the phenomenon of network nonlocality in the entanglement-swapping scenario has been well investigated and demonstrated. However, it is known that violations of the so-called bilocality inequality used in previous experimental demonstrations cannot be used to certify the nonclassicality of their sources. This has put forward a stronger concept for nonlocality in networks, called full network nonlocality. Here, we experimentally observe full network nonlocal correlations in a network where the source-independence, locality, and measurement-independence loopholes are closed. This is ensured by employing two independent sources, rapid setting generation, and spacelike separations of relevant events. Our experiment violates known inequalities characterizing nonfull network nonlocal correlations by over 5 standard deviations, certifying the absence of classical sources in the realization.

Association of the triglyceride-glucose index with subclinical left ventricular dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients: A retrospective cross-sectional study

AIMS/INTRODUCTION

The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a simple and reliable indicator of insulin resistance, and is associated with the development and poor outcomes of cardiovascular disease. Subclinical left ventricular dysfunction (SLVD) is frequently detected in approximately one-third of diabetes patients, but it has not been established whether the TyG index correlates with SLVD. We carried out this research to evaluate the relationship between the TyG index and SLVD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a cross-sectional and observational study of 183 type 2 diabetes mellitus inpatients at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Nanjing, China. The TyG index and homeostasis model assessment 2 estimates for insulin resistance (HOMA2-IR) were calculated from biochemical measurements, and speckle-tracking echocardiography was carried out. According to global longitudinal strain (GLS) by echocardiography, participants were categorized into the SLVD (GLS <18%) group or the non-SLVD (GLS ≥18%) group.

RESULTS

In comparison with non-SLVD participants, SLVD participants had higher insulin resistance, as reflected by elevated TyG and HOMA2-IR indices, as well as a higher body mass index, waist circumference and triglyceride level (P < 0.05 for each). When grouped by TyG index tertiles, an elevated TyG index was correlated with other cardiometabolic risk factors, as well as a decrease in GLS. In the multivariate logistic regression analyses, the TyG index was an independent risk factor for SLVD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (odds ratio 2.047, 95% confidence interval 1.07-3.914, P  = 0.03), whereas HOMA2-IR was not.

CONCLUSIONS

The TyG index is independently associated with SLVD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and is a more reliable indicator of SLVD than HOMA2-IR.

Experimental Refutation of Real-Valued Quantum Mechanics under Strict Locality Conditions

Quantum mechanics is commonly formulated in a complex, rather than real, Hilbert space. However, whether quantum theory really needs the participation of complex numbers has been debated ever since its birth. Recently, a Bell-like test in an entanglement-swapping scenario has been proposed to distinguish standard quantum mechanics from its real-valued analog. Previous experiments have conceptually demonstrated, yet not satisfied, the central requirement of independent state preparation and measurements and leave several loopholes. Here, we implement such a Bell-like test with two separated independent sources delivering entangled photons to three separated parties under strict locality conditions that are enforced by spacelike separation of the relevant events, rapid random setting generation, and fast measurement. With the fair-sampling assumption and closed loopholes of independent source, locality, and measurement independence simultaneously, we violate the constraints of real-valued quantum mechanics by 5.30 standard deviations. Our results disprove the real-valued quantum theory to describe nature and ensure the indispensable role of complex numbers in quantum mechanics.

Experimental Demonstration of Genuine Tripartite Nonlocality under Strict Locality Conditions

Nonlocality captures one of the counterintuitive features of nature that defies classical intuition. Recent investigations reveal that our physical world's nonlocality is at least tripartite; i.e., genuinely tripartite nonlocal correlations in nature cannot be reproduced by any causal theory involving bipartite nonclassical resources and unlimited shared randomness. Here, by allowing the fair sampling assumption and postselection, we experimentally demonstrate such genuine tripartite nonlocality in a network under strict locality constraints that are ensured by spacelike separating all relevant events and employing fast quantum random number generators and high-speed polarization measurements. In particular, for a photonic quantum triangular network we observe a locality-loophole-free violation of the Bell-type inequality by 7.57 standard deviations for a postselected tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state of fidelity (93.13±0.24)%, which convincingly disproves the possibility of simulating genuine tripartite nonlocality by bipartite nonlocal resources with globally shared randomness.

Closing the Locality and Detection Loopholes in Multiparticle Entanglement Self-Testing

First proposed by Mayers and Yao, self-testing provides a certification method to infer the underlying physics of quantum experiments in a black-box scenario. Numerous demonstrations have been reported to self-test various types of entangled states. However, all the multiparticle self-testing experiments reported so far suffer from both detection and locality loopholes. Here, we report the first experimental realization of multiparticle entanglement self-testing closing the locality loophole in a photonic system, and the detection loophole in a superconducting system, respectively. We certify three-party and four-party GHZ states with at least 0.84(1) and 0.86(3) fidelities in a device-independent way. These results can be viewed as a meaningful advance in multiparticle loophole-free self-testing, and also significant progress on the foundations of quantum entanglement certification.

The Magnetic Genome of Two-Dimensional van der Waals Materials

Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as one of the most promising areas in condensed matter research, with many exciting emerging properties and significant potential for applications ranging from topological magnonics to low-power spintronics, quantum computing, and optical communications. In the brief time after their discovery, 2D magnets have blossomed into a rich area for investigation, where fundamental concepts in magnetism are challenged by the behavior of spins that can develop at the single layer limit. However, much effort is still needed in multiple fronts before 2D magnets can be routinely used for practical implementations. In this comprehensive review, prominent authors with expertise in complementary fields of 2D magnetism (i.e., synthesis, device engineering, magneto-optics, imaging, transport, mechanics, spin excitations, and theory and simulations) have joined together to provide a genome of current knowledge and a guideline for future developments in 2D magnetic materials research.

Magnetic domains and domain wall pinning in atomically thin CrBr3 revealed by nanoscale imaging

The emergence of atomically thin van der Waals magnets provides a new platform for the studies of two-dimensional magnetism and its applications. However, the widely used measurement methods in recent studies cannot provide quantitative information of the magnetization nor achieve nanoscale spatial resolution. These capabilities are essential to explore the rich properties of magnetic domains and spin textures. Here, we employ cryogenic scanning magnetometry using a single-electron spin of a nitrogen-vacancy center in a diamond probe to unambiguously prove the existence of magnetic domains and study their dynamics in atomically thin CrBr₃. By controlling the magnetic domain evolution as a function of magnetic field, we find that the pinning effect is a dominant coercivity mechanism and determine the magnetization of a CrBr₃ bilayer to be about 26 Bohr magnetons per square nanometer. The high spatial resolution of this technique enables imaging of magnetic domains and allows to locate the sites of defects that pin the domain walls and nucleate the reverse domains. Our work highlights scanning nitrogen-vacancy center magnetometry as a quantitative probe to explore nanoscale features in two-dimensional magnets.

Van der Waals (vdW) magnets have allowed researchers to explore the two dimensional limit of magnetisation; however experimental challenges have hindered analysis of magnetic domains. Here, using an NV centre based probe, the authors analyse the nature of magnetic domains in the vdW magnet, CrBr₃.

Long-Distance Free-Space Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD), based on two-photon interference, is immune to all attacks against the detection system and allows a QKD network with untrusted relays. Since the MDI-QKD protocol was proposed, fiber-based implementations aimed at longer distance, higher key rates, and network verification have been rapidly developed. However, owing to the effect of atmospheric turbulence, MDI-QKD over a free-space channel remains experimentally challenging. Herein, by developing a robust adaptive optics system, high-precision time synchronization and frequency locking between independent photon sources located far apart, we realized the first free-space MDI-QKD over a 19.2-km urban atmospheric channel, which well exceeds the effective atmospheric thickness. Our experiment takes the first step toward satellite-based MDI-QKD. Moreover, the technology developed herein opens the way to quantum experiments in free space involving long-distance interference of independent single photons.

Remote Blind State Preparation with Weak Coherent Pulses in the Field

Quantum computing has seen tremendous progress in past years. Due to implementation complexity and cost, the future path of quantum computation is strongly believed to delegate computational tasks to powerful quantum servers on the cloud. Universal blind quantum computing (UBQC) provides the protocol for the secure delegation of arbitrary quantum computations, and it has received significant attention. However, a great challenge in UBQC is how to transmit a quantum state over a long distance securely and reliably. Here, we solve this challenge by proposing a resource-efficient remote blind qubit preparation (RBQP) protocol, with weak coherent pulses for the client to produce, using a compact and low-cost laser. We experimentally verify a key step of RBQP-quantum nondemolition measurement-in the field test over 100 km of fiber. Our experiment uses a quantum teleportation setup in the telecom wavelength and generates 1000 secure qubits with an average fidelity of (86.9±1.5)%, which exceeds the quantum no-cloning fidelity of equatorial qubit states. The results prove the feasibility of UBQC over long distances, and thus serves as a key milestone towards secure cloud quantum computing.

[Proteomic analysis and verification of protein expression after upregulation of human CD99 in Hodgkin lymphoma cell line L428]

Objective: To investigate the proteins expression difference after upregulation of human CD99 in Hodgkin Lymphoma cell line, L428 cell, and verify the function of differential proteins. Methods: The differential proteins were detected by two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry analysis, cluster analysis was done by GOfact. Results: There were 38 proteins screened out, of which 21 proteins were positively associated with CD99, while 17 proteins were negative. Among the 38 proteins, 32 proteins participated in biological process, and 35 proteins were involved in the composition and construction. And 28 proteins participated in multifaceted biological activities including antioxidation, protein binding, catalytic activity, regulation of enzyme, signal transduction, molecular structure, regulation of translation and ion transport. Conclusions: The changes of the differential proteins, correlated with cytoskeleton, cell differentiation, signal pathway and regulating gene expression, are closely relevant to the translation between Hodgkin/Reed-Sternberg and B lymphocyte cell.

Error-Disturbance Trade-off in Sequential Quantum Measurements

We derive a state-dependent error-disturbance trade-off based on a statistical distance in the sequential measurements of a pair of noncommutative observables and experimentally verify the relation with a photonic qubit system. We anticipate that this Letter may further stimulate the study on the quantum uncertainty principle and related applications in quantum measurements.

Enantioselective Construction and Transformations of Poly­functionalized 3,4-Dihydro-2H-thiopyrano[2,3-b]quinolines

We developed an enantioselective organocascade Michael/Henry reaction in the presence of a bifunctional organocatalyst to construct chiral polyfunctionalized 3,4-dihydro-2H-thiopyrano[2,3-b]quinolines. The resulting optically active products with three contiguous stereocenters, one quaternary and two tertiary, were obtained in moderate to good yields and with good to excellent enantioselectivities. Remarkably, the resulting products were readily converted into polyfunctionalized optically active furo[2′,3′:4,5]thiopyrano[2,3-b]quinoline, 3,4-dihydro-2H-thiopyrano[2,3-b]quinoline 1-oxide and 2,3-dihydro-4H-thiopyrano[2,3-b]quinolin-4-one derivatives.

Avalanche dynamics of granular materials under the slumping regime in a rotating drum as revealed by speckle visibility spectroscopy

We used speckle visibility spectroscopy to measure the time-resolved dynamcis of avalanching down the inclined surface of a granular material in a half-full rotating drum operating in the slumping regime. The distribution of the avalanche period, t(d), rest time between them, t(r), and peak particle velocity fluctuation, δv(p)(2), are all normally distributed. While the distributions of the two times at the top and bottom of the free surface are very similar, the particle velocity fluctuation is greater at the bottom of the free surface than at the top. The rest time is observed to be inversely related to the drum speed. Combining this with the relation of t(r) and the difference of the upper and lower angle of repose for the granular material, Δθ, we find that the latter decreases linearly with increasing rotational speed. We also observe that t(d) increases in a linear fashion with the drum speed. Using the relation of t(r) and the distance that particles have to move during an avalanche, we further find that a new scaling relation of the mean number of avalanches required to traverse the free surface with drum speed. We find that the slumping frequency increases with the rotating speed before becoming constant in the slumping-to-rolling transition region. Finally, we find that the average peak of the fluctuation speed of the avalanche, δv(p)(2), increases linearly with the drum speed.

Experimental unconditionally secure bit commitment

Quantum physics allows for unconditionally secure communication between parties that trust each other. However, when the parties do not trust each other such as in the bit commitment scenario, quantum physics is not enough to guarantee security unless extra assumptions are made. Unconditionally secure bit commitment only becomes feasible when quantum physics is combined with relativistic causality constraints. Here we experimentally implement a quantum bit commitment protocol with relativistic constraints that offers unconditional security. The commitment is made through quantum measurements in two quantum key distribution systems in which the results are transmitted via free-space optical communication to two agents separated with more than 20 km. The security of the protocol relies on the properties of quantum information and relativity theory. In each run of the experiment, a bit is successfully committed with less than 5.68×10(-2) cheating probability. This demonstrates the experimental feasibility of quantum communication with relativistic constraints.

Upconversion detection near 2 μm at the single photon level

We have demonstrated upconversion detection at the single photon level in the 2 μm spectral window using a pump wavelength near 1550 nm, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, and a volume Bragg grating (VBG) to reduce noise. We achieve a system photon detection efficiency of 10%, with a noise count rate of 24,500 counts per second, competitive with other 2 μm single photon detection technologies. This detector has potential applications in environmental gas monitoring, life science, and classical and quantum communication.

217 km long distance photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry based on ultra-low noise up-conversion single photon detector

We demonstrate a photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry with 42.19 dB dynamic range using an ultra-low noise up-conversion single photon detector. By employing the long-wave pump technique and a volume Bragg grating, we achieve a noise equivalent power of -139.7 dBm/√Hz for our detector. We perform the OTDR experiments using a fiber of length approximate 217 km, and show that our system can identify defects along the entire fiber length in a measurement time of 13 minutes.

Ultralow noise up-conversion detector and spectrometer for the telecom band

We demonstrate up-conversion single-photon detection for the 1550-nm telecommunications band using a PPLN waveguide, long-wavelength pump, and narrowband filtering using a volume Bragg grating. We achieve total-system detection efficiency of around 30% with noise at the dark-count level of a Silicon APD. Based on the new detector, a single-pixel up-conversion infrared spectrometer with a noise equivalent power of -142 dBm Hz(-1/2) was demonstrated, which was as good as a liquid nitrogen cooled CCD camera.

Isolation and characterization of the major form of human MUC18 cDNA gene and correlation of MUC18 over-expression in prostate cancer cell lines and tissues with malignant progression

Ectopical expression of huMUC18, a cell adhesion molecule in the immunoglobulin gene superfamily, causes a non-metastatic human melanoma cell line to become metastatic in a nude mouse system. To determine if MUC18 expression correlates with the development and malignant progression of prostate cancer, we investigated differential expression of human MUC18 (huMUC18) in normal prostate epithelial cells, prostate cancer cell lines, and prostatic normal and cancer tissues. We cloned and characterized the human MUC18 (huMUC18) cDNA gene from three human prostate cancer cell lines and three human melanoma cell lines. The cDNA sequences from the six human cancer cell lines were identical except differences in one to five nucleotides. The deduced amino acid sequences of the longest ORF were 646 amino acids that were identical in these cDNAs except for one to three amino acid residues. The amino acid sequences of all our huMUC18 cDNA genes are similar to that cloned by other group (GenBank access #M28882) except differences in the same seven amino acids. We conclude that huMUC18 cDNA gene reported here represents the gene product from a major allele. The MUC18 mRNA and protein was expressed in three metastatic prostate cancer cell lines (TSU-PR1, DU145, and PC-3), but not in one non-metastatic prostate cancer cell line (LNCaP.FGC). The expression of huMUC18 in these four cell lines is positively related to their extent of in vitro motility and invasiveness and in vivo metastasis in nude mice. HuMUC18 protein was also expressed at high levels in extracts prepared from tissue sample sections containing high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), but weakly expressed in extracts prepared from cultured primary normal prostatic epithelial cells and the normal prostate gland. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that huMUC18 was expressed at higher levels in the epithelial cells of high-grade PIN and prostatic carcinomas, and in cells of a perineural invasion, a lymph node, and a lung metastases compared to that in normal or benign hyperplastic epithelium (BPH). We therefore conclude that MUC18 expression is increased during prostate cancer initiation (high grade PIN) and progression to carcinoma, and in metastatic cell lines and metastatic carcinoma. Increased expression of MUC18 is implicated to play an important role in developing and malignant progression of human prostate cancer. Furthermore, the lacking of predominant cytoplasmic membrane expression of MUC18 appeared to correlate with malignant progression of prostate cancer.

Loss of heterozygosity on the long arm of human chromosome 7 in sporadic renal cell carcinomas

Cytogenetic and molecular analysis of DNA sequences with highly polymorphic microsatellite markers have implicated allele loss in several chromosomal regions including 3p, 6p, 6q, 8p, 9p, 9q, 11p and 14q in the pathogenesis of sporadic renal cell carcinomas (RCCs). Deletions involving the long arm of chromosome 7 have not been described in RCCs although they have been seen in several other tumor types. However, there have been no detailed analysis of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of 7q sequences in sporadic RCCs. We therefore studied LOH for DNA sequences on 7q with 10 highly polymorphic markers in 92 matched normal/tumor samples representing sporadic RCCs including papillary, nonpapillary, and oncocytomas in order to determine whether allelic loss could be detected in a tumor type with no visible 7q rearrangements at the cytogenetic level. We found chromosome 7q allele loss in 59 of 92 cases (64%) involving one, two, or more microsatellite markers. The most common allele loss included loci D7S522 (24%) and D7S649 (30%) at 7q31.1-31.2, a region that contains one of the common fragile sites, FRA7G. By comparative multiplex PCR analysis, we detected a homozygous deletion of one marker in the 7q 31.1-31.2 region in one tumor, RC21. These results support the idea that a tumor suppressor gene in 7q31 is involved in the pathogenesis of sporadic renal cell carcinomas.

Frequent breakpoints in the region surrounding FRA3B in sporadic renal cell carcinomas

The constitutive fragile site at chromosomal band 3p14.2, FRA3B, is the most active common fragile site in the human genome. We have localized aphidicolin-induced breakpoints to two distinct clusters, separated by 200 Kb, in FRA3B (Paradee et al., 1996). Sequence analysis of these regions identified two polymorphic microsatellite markers immediately adjacent to each of these breakpoint clusters. In this report we have used these two new microsatellites and 14 additional 3p microsatellites to analyse chromosome 3p breakage and loss in 94 sporadic RCC samples, including nonpapillary, papillary and oncocytomas. We have found heterozygous loss of 3p14 sequences in >60% of the RCC samples, including both clear cell and papillary renal cell carcinomas. We have found frequent breakage in the region immediately surrounding FRA3B, demonstrating that FRA3B does play a role in chromosome breakage and loss in RCC. In contrast to other reports, >50% of the papillary tumors also showed LOH of 3p markers. We also observed microsatellite instability (MIN) with most of the tested markers in seven of eight oncocytomas and one of 69 clear cell carcinomas. The MIN in some oncocytomas was of the RER+ (replication error) type I phenotype. None of the five 3p14.2 markers detected any homozygous deletions in tumor samples, but 69/94 (73%) of the tumors had LOH for the region, which includes the recently identified FHIT gene.
