Abstract
Indications and techniques of locked plate fixation for the treatment of challenging fractures continue to evolve. As design variant of classic locked plates, the polyaxial locked plate has the ability to alter the screw angle and thereby, enhance fracture fixation. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate clinical and radiographic results in 89 patients with 90 fractures of the distal femur treated, between June 2006 and November 2011, with such a polyaxial locked plating system (Polyax™ Locked Plating System, DePuy, Warsaw, IN, USA). Seventy-seven fractures formed the report of this study. These cases were followed up until complete fracture healing or for a mean time of 77 weeks. At the time of last follow-up, 58 of 77 fractures (75.3 %) progressed to union without complication and radiographic healing occurred at a mean time of 16.3 weeks. Complications occurred in ten fractures that did not affect the healing and in nine fractures that showed delayed or non-union. The mean American Knee Society Score at the time of final follow-up was 83 for the Knee Score and 71.1 for the Functional Score. In conclusion, there is a high union rate for complex distal femoral fractures associated with a good clinical outcome in this series.

Abstract
Laundering linens and protecting them from microbiological recontamination are critical issues for the hotel and food industries and especially for hospitals. This study was performed to evaluate a sample of industrial laundries in Sardinia (Italy), to assess their compliance with national hygienic and sanitary regulations, along the complete laundering process. Study results indicate that industrial laundering processes are effective and that better awareness of staff who handle laundered textiles is required to reduce the risk of recontamination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Alterations in plasma lipid profile and in intracellular cholesterol homoeostasis have been described in various malignancies; however, significance of these alterations, if any, in cancer biology is not clear. The aim of the present study was to investigate a possible correlation between alterations in cholesterol metabolism and expansion of leukaemia cell numbers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Lipid profiles in plasma and in primary leukaemia cells isolated from patients with acute or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL and CLL) were studied. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Decreased levels of HDL-C were observed in plasma of leukaemic patients, levels of total cholesterol, LDL-C, triglycerides and phospholipids were unchanged or only slightly increased. As compared to normal lymphocytes, freshly isolated leukaemic cells showed increased levels of cholesterol esters and reduction in free cholesterol. Growth stimulation of ALL and CLL cells with phytohemagglutinin led to further increase in levels of cholesterol esters. Conversely, treatment with an inhibitor of cell proliferation such as the mTOR inhibitor, RAD, caused decline in population growth rate of leukaemia cells, which was preceded by sharp reduction in rate of cholesterol esterification. On the other hand, exposure of leukaemic cells to two inhibitors of cholesterol esterification, progesterone and SaH 58-035, caused 60% reduction in their proliferation rate. In addition to demonstrating tight correlation between cell number expansion and cholesterol esterification in leukaemic cells, these results suggest that pathways that control cholesterol esterification might represent a promising targets for novel anticancer strategies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of selected essential oils (Laurus nobilis, Eucalyptus globulus and Salvia officinalis), both alone and in combination, in cosmetic preparations characterized by an increasing risk of microbial contamination, i.e. an O/W skin cream, a hydrogel and a non-alcoholic hydrolyte. Their potential synergistic effect in combination with the usual cosmetic preservatives at low concentrations (up to 200-fold less than usual) was also investigated.

Abstract
The chemical composition of the essential oil from flowering tops of Achillea ligustica All. was studied. Samples were collected in different localities of Sardinia (Italy) and hydrodistilled both with Clevenger-type and with simultaneous distillation-extraction apparatus. The yields ranged between 0.88 +/- 0.06 and 0.43 +/- 0.02% (vol/dry wt). The essential oils were analyzed by GC-MS, and a total of 96 components were detected. From a qualitative point of view, irrelevant differences between samples were observed. Strong chemical variability depending on the origin of the samples was observed. The major compounds found were santolina alcohol (6.7-21.8%, for the first time detected in A. ligustica), borneol (3.4-20.8%), sabinol (2.1-15.5%), trans-sabinyl acetate (0.9-17.6%), alpha-thujone (0.4-25.8%), and, among sesquiterpenes, viridiflorol (0.7-3.6%). No significant differences were detected between essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation and simultaneous distillation-extraction with CH2Cl2 and n-hexane. Antioxidant activity as DPPH radical scavenging activity was expressed in TEAC and ranged between 0.40 and 0.88 mmol/L. The antimicrobial and antifungal activities were investigated on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Penicillium commune, Fusarium oxysporum, Rizoctonia solani, and Aspergillus flavus, showing low activity.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory-fibroproliferative response of the arterial wall involving a complex set of interconnected events where cell proliferation (lymphomonocytes, and endothelial and smooth-muscle cells) and substantial perturbations of intracellular cholesterol metabolism are considered to be among the main features. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the key enzyme of the hexose-monophosphate shunt pathway, is an essential enzyme involved in both cell growth and cholesterol metabolism, raising the question as to whether G6PD deficiency may have metabolic and growth implications in a deficient population. In the present study, we investigated cell growth and cholesterol metabolism in peripheral blood lymphomononuclear cells (PBMC) from G6PD-normal (n = 5) and -deficient (n = 5) subjects stimulated with lectins (phytohaemoagglutinin and Concanavalin A). G6PD activity, DNA ([3H]-thymidine incorporation) cholesterol synthesis and esterification ([14C]-acetate and [14C]-oleate incorporation), and G6PD, HMGCoA reductase and low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor mRNA levels (RT-PCR) all increased following lectin stimulation in both normal and G6PD-deficient cells. However, these parameters were significantly lower in G6PD-deficient cells (P < 0.05). It is of interest that G6PD-deficient PBMC, which showed lower expression of G6PD and higher expression of the LDL receptor gene than normal PBMC under basal conditions, exhibited an opposite pattern after stimulation: G6PD and HMGCoA reductase being expressed at significantly higher levels in deficient than in normal cells (P < 0.05). We conclude that the reduced capability of G6PD-deficient cells to respond to mitogenic stimuli and to synthesize cholesterol esters may represent favourable conditions for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES a positive correlation between cholesterol esterification, acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT), multidrug resistance (MDR1) gene expression and atherosclerotic lesions has been shown in human arteries. The objective of this study was to map the expression of MDR1, ACAT genes and the cholesteryl ester content in normal, atherosclerotic and varicose human vessels. MATERIALS vascular segments were obtained from seven cadaveric donors, 27 patients undergoing vascular surgery for severe atherosclerotic disease and 11 patients with saphenous vein varicosities. METHODS lipid analysis and RT-PCR of MDR1 and ACAT mRNAs were performed. RESULTS an increase in cholesteryl ester content and in ACAT and MDR1 expression was demonstrated in relation to the age in the arteries prone to atherosclerosis; this expression was maximal in arteries from symptomatic patients. In resistant arteries and in veins cholesteryl ester accumulation was rare and light, while ACAT and MDR1 expression was not related to the age of the subjects. CONCLUSIONS the results showed that an increase in MDR1 and ACAT expression may be responsible for the accumulation of cholesteryl esters as well as for cell growth rate acceleration in vessel sites prone to atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Cholesterol esterification and smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation are the crucial events in the development of atherosclerotic lesions. The objective of this study was to analyse cholesterol esterification and the expression of MDR1 (multidrug resistance), ACAT (acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase) and caveolin-1 genes in atherosclerotic and healthy vascular walls, in SMCs obtained from atherosclerotic lesions and saphenous veins. Results demonstrated higher levels of cholesterol esters, ACAT and MDR1 mRNAs and lower levels of caveolin-1 mRNA in atherosclerotic segments compared to adjacent serial sections of the same artery and the corresponding non-atherosclerotic arteries from cadaveric donors. SMCs isolated from atherosclerotic plaques manifested an increased capacity to esterify cholesterol and to grow at a faster rate than SMCs isolated from saphenous veins. In addition, when SMCs from atherosclerotic plaques were cultured in the presence of progesterone, a potent inhibitor of cholesterol esterification, significant growth suppression was observed. An increase in ACAT and MDR1 expression and a concomitant decrease in caveolin-1 expression were also observed in SMCs isolated from atherosclerotic arteries as early as 12 h after serum stimulation. An opposite pattern was found when SMCs were treated with progesterone. These findings support the idea that cholesterol esterification plays a role both in early atherogenesis and in clinical progression of advanced lesions and raise the possibility that the cholesterol ester pathway might directly modulate the proliferation of SMCs.

Abstract
Fluorescent probes are currently used to evaluate the mitochondrial transmembrane potential in situ. However, in parallel experiments using the probes JC-1 and TMRM in different cell types (human astrocytes, HEp-2, Vero, KB, and HeLa cells), we found that the distribution of JC-1 and TMRM is highly variable not only in different cell types but also in different cells of the same cell type, a condition that has never been documented until our work. This phenomenon depends on a hidden, widespread multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype that can be recognized only by comparative assays with MDR inhibitors (progesterone, verapamil, and cyclosporin A) and represents a serious risk of error in the evaluation of the mitochondrial potential.

Abstract
In this paper we report a male infant heterozygous for thalassemia with a mild glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. The molecular basis of this new Class III G6PD variant is a G-->T mutation at nucleotide 34 in the exon 2, which predicts a Val-->Leu aminoacid substitution at codon 12. We designated this variant as G6PD Sinnai from the place of birth of the propositus.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that a membrane p-glycoprotein, encoded by MDR1 gene, is involved in the transport of free cholesterol from the plasma membrane to endoplasmic reticulum, the site of cholesterol esterification by acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT). Moreover, results deriving from our previous studies have shown that the rate of cell proliferation was positively correlated with cholesteryl ester levels as well as with ACAT and MDR1 gene expression. In this study, lipid content and the expression of the genes involved in cholesterol metabolism such as hydroxy-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCoA-R), low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R), ACAT and MDR1 have been investigated in control and atherosclerotic arteries. The results have shown that the levels of cholesteryl ester increase with the age of cadaveric donors in arteries prone to atherosclerosis (abdominal aorta, superficial femoral artery) and become predominant in advanced atherosclerotic lesions. The mRNA levels of ACAT and MDR1 showed the same age correlation, reaching the highest values in atherosclerotic specimens. These results suggest that MDR1 may be involved in the accumulation of intracellular cholesterol ester levels found in atherosclerotic lesions. Moreover, the levels of HMGCoA-R, LDL-R and ACAT gene expressions progressively increased with the age of cadaveric donors; conversely, in atherosclerotic specimens, the mRNA levels of HMGCoA-R and LDL-R drastically decreased while ACAT gene expression reached its maximum. These findings suggest a reactivation of normal homeostatic regulation of cholesterol in advanced and complicated lesions.

Abstract
In the present study we examined gene expression and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity in leukemic cells isolated from G6PD normal and deficient subjects. The results have shown that G6PD activity strongly increases in G6PD normal leukemic cells as well as in G6PD deficient leukemic cells when compared to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Higher levels of G6PD gene expression were observed in leukemic cells from G6PD deficient patients compared to G6PD normal. A similar pattern of gene expression was also observed for 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMGCoA) reductase. These results support the hypothesis that G6PD deficient cell, in order to sustain their growth, must respond to the low activity of their mutant enzyme with an increase in quantity through an induction of gene expression.

Abstract
The ascites hepatoma Yoshida AH130 causes in the host a rapid and progressive body weight loss, associated with reduced food intake, and protein and lipid hypercatabolism. Because insulin regulates glucose as well as lipid and protein metabolism, we suggest that the observed alterations are at least in part secondary to hypoinsulinemia and/or to the increase of counterregulatory hormones in AH130-bearing rats. To verify this hypothesis, controls with free access to food (n = 4), controls with free access to food plus insulin (107 micromol. kg body wt-1. d-1) (n = 4), controls pair-fed to the tumor-bearing rats (n = 4), pair-fed controls treated with insulin (n= 4), tumor hosts (n = 9), and tumor hosts treated with insulin (n = 6) were used. The Yoshida ascites hepatoma cells ( approximately 10(8) cells/rat) were inoculated intraperitoneally. Daily food intake and body weight were measured; insulin was injected starting the day of tumor implantation for 6 d. The metabolism of both cholesterol and lipids was investigated in tumor cells, and ascitic fluid and blood serum were investigated at the end of treatment. Insulin prevented the reduction of food intake (19 +/- 0.6 vs. 13 +/- 0.4 g/d, P < 0.01; AH130 hosts treated and not treated with insulin, respectively), the loss of body weight (202 +/- 12 vs. 135 +/- 9 g, P < 0.01), lowered the circulating triglycerides (48.3 +/- 4.9 vs. 84.5 +/- 7.1 mmol/L, P < 0.01), and free fatty acids (561 +/- 47 vs. 989 +/- 54 mmol/L (P < 0.01), while corrected the decrease of adipose lipoprotein lipase activity (1,240 +/- vs. 300 +/- pmol FA, P < 0.01) observed in AH130 hosts. Moreover, insulin prevented the decrease in HDL cholesterol (13.2 +/- 0.8 vs. 9.3. +/- 0.7 mmol/L, P < 0.01) and significantly increased hepatic cholesterol synthesis as evaluated by 14C-acetate incorporation into cholesterol, in both liver (3,337 +/- 245 vs. 830 +/- 115 Bq/g, P < 0.01) and AH130 cells (11,676 +/- 1,693 vs. 4,196 +/- 527 Bq/10(6) cells, P < 0.01). Thus insulin treatment ameliorated many metabolic derangements, with a lengthening of rats survival time (7 +/- 1 vs. 11 +/- 1 d, P < 0.05) without significantly stimulating tumor growth. These data, together with our previous observations on the effectiveness of insulin on protein turnover perturbations, suggest that many metabolic alterations occurring during cancer cachexia can be avoided by the administration of this hormone.

Abstract
In the present study, the bezafibrate levels were measured in serum of rats treated with lead nitrate using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The results have shown that the peak corresponding to bezafibrate in the chromatogram is reduced in serum of rats treated with bezafibrate plus lead, indicating that lead treatment accelerates the metabolism of bezafibrate in rats.

Abstract
1. Serum lipids and lipoprotein profiles were determined in children affected by different types of malignancies (leukaemias or lymphomas and solid tumours) both before any treatment and after remission of the disease following chemical or surgical therapy. 2. At the time of diagnosis, children bearing tumours showed hypertriglyceridaemia and reduced concentrations of plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, the decrease being particularly prominent in patients with haematological tumours. Children bearing solid tumours displayed an increase of total cholesterol, while those with haematological cancer showed decreased phospholipid levels; low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in neoplastic patients was not significantly different from control values. High triacylglycerol and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were also evident in cancer patients divided according to age into three groups (0-5, 6-10 and 11-15 years) when compared with age-matched control subjects. Similarly, high triacylglycerol and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were also observed in both male and female children when patients were divided according to sex and compared with corresponding controls. 3. Clinical remission after therapy was accompanied by an increase of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels compared with values observed at diagnosis. In contrast, post-treatment levels of triacylglycerol were higher than those observed before therapy. These results support the hypothesis that alterations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels may be related, at least in part, to the rate of tumour growth, while modifications of triacylglycerol levels may be mediated by different mechanisms.

Abstract
Rats transplanted with the ascites hepatoma Yoshida AH-130 developed a severely progressive cachexia, characterised by marked alterations in protein and lipid metabolism. In particular, high levels of serum triglycerides and free fatty acids were associated with altered levels and distribution of plasma cholesterol, with increased total and very low-density lipoprotein-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-LDL) cholesterol and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. The tumour cells showed high rates of cholesterol synthesis and elevated content of free and esterified cholesterol, whereas total cholesterol synthesis was reduced in the host liver. To determine whether these perturbations could be related to the elevation of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) previously shown in the AH-130 bearers (Tessitore L, Costelli P, Baccino FM 1993, Br J Cancer, 67, 15-23), either anti-TNF polyclonal antibodies or non-immune IgGs were injected daily after tumour transplantation. The anti-TNF treatment neither affected tumour growth nor prevented the serum cholesterol changes, while attenuating the hypertriglyceridaemia and the elevated serum free fatty acid levels. These data indicate that TNF does not appear to be directly involved in the altered cholesterol metabolism in AH-130 hosts, thus supporting the view that cholesterol metabolism and lipid metabolism are regulated differently during tumour growth.

Abstract
This investigation is the first nationwide survey on the circulation of leptospira infections in human beings in Italy. In nine out of twenty Italian regions, representative samples of the population were investigated for the presence of leptospira infections. Unexpectedly, leptospira infections were found to be widespread, the number of cases being much higher than the diagnosed clinical cases. There were found to be high, medium, and low risk areas. On the whole, the risk for the rural population was no higher than the risk for urban dwellers; leisure activities, contact with animals and residence on the plain versus residence in the hills were important risk factors. There was an unidentified risk factor in urbanites which was absent in the rural population. A changing pattern in infecting serovars was observed, with infections from serogroups Sejroe, Javanica and Australis prevailing over infections from the Icterohaemorrhagiae and Bataviae serogroups, which were the main agents of human leptospirosis during the 1950s. The mechanisms of these changes, the need for epidemiological surveys and improved diagnostic methods of screening are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The authors have previously demonstrated in different experimental models that sustained processes of cellular growth are characterized by alterations of cholesterol metabolism not only in the proliferating tissues but also in the plasma compartment. METHODS To evaluate whether alterations of cholesterol metabolism similar to those observed in experimental models are also associated with human cancer, in the present study cholesterol distribution in tumor tissues and lipid composition in the plasma compartment were determined in patients with different types of gastrointestinal cancer. RESULTS The results showed that tumor tissues contain increased amounts of cholesterol when compared with the corresponding normal tissues. Intracellular alterations of cholesterol were accompanied by specific changes of cholesterol in the plasma compartment: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was markedly reduced in the serum of patients with gastrointestinal cancer and the lipoprotein profiles showed a decrease in HDL3 fraction, the main HDL subfraction in human serum. The decrease of HDL cholesterol was negatively associated with the clinical stage of the disease. No changes in either total or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were observed. CONCLUSIONS A major function attributed to HDL is to maintain normal cell cholesterol homeostasis by removing excess of cholesterol from intracellular pools. Because the use and storage of cholesterol are increased within the tumor tissues during growth, it is possible to hypothesize that low HDL levels observed in patients with gastrointestinal cancer are associated with the increased cholesterol metabolism in proliferating tissues.

Abstract
In the present study, plasma lipid concentrations were determined at different times after admission in sera from G6PD-deficient children during haemolytic crisis induced by fava bean ingestion. Reductions in total, LDL and HDL cholesterol were found in association with the maximum of bone marrow hyperplasia. A return towards normal values occurred with regression of the disease. No changes in other lipid parameters were observed. These data suggest that alterations of lipoprotein pattern, other than in experimental animals, are also present in humans with non-malignant proliferative processes. These changes appear to be a consequence of the disease, probably due to an increased utilization of cholesterol by proliferating cells.

Abstract
Salmonella typhimurium was isolated in the culture test of a small child admitted to hospital suffering from febrile gastroenteritis with stools containing traces of mucus and blood. Her mother also resulted positive for this microorganism. The family had recently bought a small turtle, imported from Florida, at the city fair. Further tests revealed Salmonella typhimurium in both the turtle's feces and the water in its tank.

Abstract
In this study serum cholesterol was measured in different types of human hematologic malignancies characterized by a wide range of cell proliferation. In all tumoral types a significant decrease of HDL cholesterol was observed, whereas total serum cholesterol generally remained unchanged. Another interesting observation of our study was the apparent inverse correlation between the extent of cell proliferation in these neoplastic disorders and the level of HDL cholesterol. Since a decrease of HDL cholesterol was previously observed, in our laboratory, in different experimental models of normal and neoplastic cell proliferation, we suggest that the decrease of HDL cholesterol may be a generalized phenomenon related to massive cellular growth in normal and malignant processes.

Abstract
Anaerobic infections are quite rare in pediatric age, being that, they affect only neonates and immunodepressed patients. We think to be somewhat interesting to describe the case of our patient, a 9 year old boy, unaffected by any predisposing factor, came under our observation because of a severe respiratory distress. He showed evident clinical and radiological signs of pleural effusion in the right lung, together with a gas coil in the upper field and a left mediastinal shifting. A thoracentesis was then performed, giving rise to 600 ml of foul smelling purulent material; this procedure promptly improved his respiratory function. A permanent drainage trough the chest wall was set and an antibiotic therapy, based on the clinical picture and the character of the exudate, begun. In effect, the typical smell of the purulent material led us to suspect an anaerobic infection, and for this reason we employed the teicoplanin iv, a rarely used in the pediatric age drug. While blood cultures were negative for any organism, exudate cultures yielded Peptostreptococcus anaerobius; the last one resulted highly sensible following antibiogram to the previously chosen drug. The x-ray pattern and the rapid disappearing of the gas coil induced us to exclude further either congenital or acquired lung diseases. We conclude that, in absence of other proved sources of entry, the air presence in the pleural space was secondary to gas formation by the anaerobic micro-organism. The clinical course was very satisfactory allowing the patient to be dismissed on the 28th hospital day, with no need of further surgical therapy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
In the present study, lipoprotein metabolism was investigated during compensatory hyperplasia of bone marrow after haemolysis induced by phenylhydrazine (20 mg/kg b.w.) administration in rats. The rats were sacrificed at different time intervals (0, 1, 2 and 5 days) after phenylhydrazine treatment. Analysis of the different fractions of lipoproteins has shown that during bone marrow hyperplasia there is an alteration of lipoprotein profiles, mainly due to a decrease of HDL2 and HDL3 subfractions.

Abstract
The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the key enzyme of the hexose monophosphate (HMP) shunt pathway, was measured in both normal and tumoral larynx tissues from normal and G6PD deficient subjects. Significant increases of this enzymatic activity were found in tumoral tissues of both normal and G6PD deficient subjects, who were characterized by very low levels of G6PD activity in erythrocytes as well as in larynx tissue.

Abstract
Previous studies by our laboratory have shown that lead nitrate when injected intravenously as a single dose to rats, induces a hyperplastic response in the liver. Liver hyperplasia was accompanied by an increase in cholesterol synthesis, an accumulation of cholesterol esters and by a stimulation of hexose-monophosphate (HMP) shunt enzyme activities. In the present report, hepatic DNA, mitotic index, cholesterol metabolism, as well as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) activities, were investigated during liver hyperplasia induced by lead in fasted rats. Fasting was chosen as an experimental model characterized by a very strong depression of those metabolic pathways (cholesterol synthesis and HMP shunt) that we have found related to liver hyperplasia. The mitogenic response, even if at minor extent, also occurs in liver of fasted rats. A stimulation of cholesterol synthesis and HMP shunt enzyme activities, was also observed in lead-treated fasted rats, adding further support to the fact that an endogenous source of newly synthesized cholesterol together with a suitable increase of HMP shunt enzyme activities is needed during hepatic cell proliferation.

Abstract
In the present study the three dimeric molecular forms of rat liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were investigated during liver hyperplasia induced by lead nitrate. An increase of band 3 and a concomitant decrease of band 1 was found, indicating that this proliferating process is characterized by a peculiar pattern in the distribution of liver G6PD activity. Since the same pattern was observed also in liver hyperplasia induced in fasted animals, a condition otherwise characterized by a shift towards band 1, we suggest that during proliferating processes the metabolic control normally exerted by fasting on the enzymatic activity is overcome.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and 6-phosphogluconate, dehydrogenase the key enzymes of the hexose monophosphate shunt pathway, were measured in both surrounding and tumoral lung tissues from normal and G6PD-deficient subjects. A significant increase of these enzymatic activities in tumoral tissue was found not only in G6PD-normal patients, but also in G6PD-deficient patients with very low or nonmeasurable G6PD activity in both erythrocytes and normal lung tissue.

Abstract
Previous studies from our laboratories have shown a stimulation of HMP-shunt, cholesterol metabolism and DNA synthesis during cell proliferation. In order to understand the co-ordinated regulation of these pathways during cell growth, the above metabolic pathways were studied in: liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy, lead-induced liver hyperplasia, liver cell proliferation induced by insulin in streptozotocin-diabetic rats, liver cell proliferation in fasted rats after refeeding and, hepatocyte nodules induced by a selection procedure. The results indeed indicate that changes in HMP-shunt and cholesterol metabolism occur at a very early stage during the process of normal as well as preneoplastic cell growth. The coordinated regulation between cell growth and changes in these metabolic pathways needs further study.

Abstract
Checking the resident 1,868 males found to be G6PD deficient out of 15,964 examined, we observed the percentage of G6PD deficiency in male population largely varying among the various Sardinian towns ranging from 1 to over 50%. As preliminary analysis, in 24 towns out of 39 in which the sample was sufficiently suggestive of their whole resident male population, we calculated Standardized Mortality Rates (SMR) for all cancers and linear regression between SMRs and frequency of G6PD deficiency in the same towns. Previous observations suggested the hypothesis of a negative correlation between frequency of G6PD deficiency and incidence of cancer, as we found in the preliminary analysis of this study. The results are not sufficient either to accept or to refuse this hypothesis.

Abstract
Liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy was used as an experimental model for studying mammalian cell division and replication. The rate of cell proliferation in this hyperplastic model was correlated with hepatic de novo synthesis of cholesterol, with the hexose monophosphate shunt pathway of glucose metabolism, and with serum lipoproteins. An increase of hepatic cholesterol esters and of incorporation of tritiated water in cholesterol esters was observed at 24 hr after partial hepatectomy. Partial hepatectomy also resulted in an increase of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and in alteration of serum lipoproteins, primarily due to a selective decline in high density lipoprotein fraction.

Abstract
The livers of streptozotocin-induced diabetic and fasted rats showed a decreased cholesterol synthesis measured by in vitro incorporation of [2-14C]acetate. A significant decrease of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD), and pyruvate kinase (PK) was also observed 7 days after administration of streptozotocin. These enzymatic activities were also low in livers of 72 hr fasted animals. An increase of glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase) was observed consistently in diabetic as well as in fasted rats. Suitable amounts of insulin and refeeding normalized the alterated enzymatic activities in diabetic and in fasted animals, respectively.

Abstract
The endogenous synthesis of cholesterol in hepatocyte nodules, induced in male Wistar rats, by a single dose of the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine followed by a selection procedure, was investigated and was compared with that in surrounding and control tissue. In addition, the activity of enzymes related to carbohydrate metabolism (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and pyruvate kinase), was measured. Hepatocyte nodules showed a striking increase in their capacity for synthesizing cholesterol, in comparison to surrounding and control tissues, and an enhancement in the activity of the pentose phosphate pathway, as indicated by increased activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and a concomitant decrease of glucose-6-phosphatase. The stimulation of cholesterol synthesis and of the pentose phosphate pathway was associated with increased incorporation of labelled thymidine into DNA. These data indicate that, among other metabolic disturbances, enhancement of cholesterol synthesis and of the pentose phosphate pathway, is accompanied by an increased proliferative capacity of hepatocyte nodules.

Abstract
A case of meningitis by Yersinia enterocolitica in a patient with thalassemia major is described. The Yersinia has been identified both in the cerebrospinal fluid and in the feces. The clinic syndrome began with gastroenteritis and was suddenly complicated by septicemia and meningitis. In spite of a prompt and specific antibiotic therapy, the disease led the patient to death.

Abstract
Wistar rats treated with lead nitrate were used in these experiments to provide evidence of the possible correlation between hyperplasia, induced cholesterol synthesis and the levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) in the liver. Lead treatment increases liver weight, hepatic cholesterol esters and the relative content of free cholesterol. An increase of the incorporation of tritiated water in free and cholesterol esters was also observed. The effect of lead resulted in an increase of hepatic G-6-PD at all times considered. The correlation between these parameters and hyperplasia are discussed.

The effect of 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC), an inducer of the mixed function oxidases system (MFOS), was investigated in male Wistar rats in relation to plasmatic cholesterol and hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD). 3-MC induced an increase in total cholesterol; the maximal increase was seen 2 days after treatment (50%). The increase in total cholesterol was followed by an augmentation in cholesterol HDL. 3-MC treatment resulted also in an increase of hepatic G-6-PD.

Abstract
The effect of lead nitrate, an inhibitor of the hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme system upon the acute, hepatotoxicity of dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) was studied. Lead pretreatment significantly prevented polysomal disaggregation induced by the nitrosamine. Cell necrosis, evaluated morphologically and by the release of serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), was also diminished. The metabolism of DMN in rats pretreated with lead nitrate was investigated by following its clearance from blood and by determining, in vitro the demethylation of the nitrosamine. Lead increased, although not significantly, the clearance of DMN from blood, but it lowered the activity of DMN-demethylase 24 h after its administration. Finally, lead lowered the lethal effects of DMN. The mechanism by which lead influenced DMN toxicity is discussed.
