Abstract
Recent research focused on novel aspects of sulphur and sulphur-containing molecules in fundamental plant processes has highlighted the importance of these compounds. Currently, the focus has shifted to the efficacy of hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) as signalling compounds that regulate different development and stress mitigation in plants. Accordingly, we used an in silico approach to study the differential expression patterns of H2 S metabolic genes at different growth/development stages and their tissue-specific expression patterns under a range of abiotic stresses. Moreover, to understand the multilevel regulation of genes involved in H2 S metabolism, we performed computation-based promoter analysis, alternative splice variant analysis, prediction of putative miRNA targets and co-expression network analysis. Gene expression analysis suggests that H2 S biosynthesis is highly influenced by developmental and stress stimuli. The functional annotation of promoter structures reveales a wide range of plant hormone and stress responsive cis-regulatory elements (CREs) that regulate H2 S metabolism. Co-expression analysis suggested that genes involved in H2 S metabolism are also associated with different metabolic processes. In this data-mining study, the primary focus was to understand the genetic architecture governing pathways of H2 S metabolism in different cell compartments under various developmental and stress signalling cascades. The present study will help to understand the genetic architecture of H2 S metabolism via cysteine metabolism and the functional roles of these genes in development and stress tolerance mechanisms.

Abstract
Glutamine synthetase (GS; E.C.6.3.1.2) is a key enzyme in higher plants with two isozymes, cytosolic GS1 and plastidic GS2, and involves in the assimilation and recycling of NH4+ ions and maintenance of complex traits such as crop nitrogen-use efficiency and yield. Our present understanding of crop nitrogen-use efficiency and its correlation with the functional role of the GS family genes is inadequate, which delays harnessing the benefit of this key enzyme in crop improvement. In this report, we performed a comprehensive investigation on the phylogenetic relationship, structural properties, complex multilevel gene regulation, and expression patterns of the GS genes to enrich present understanding about the enzyme. Our Gene Ontology and protein-protein interactions analysis revealed the functional aspects of GS isozymes in stress mitigation, aging, nucleotide biosynthesis/transport, DNA repair and response to metals. The insight gained here contributes to the future research strategies in developing climate-smart crops for global sustainability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluctuation in serotonin (5-HT) level is an essential manifestation of several neurological disorders. In view of such importance, it is necessary to monitor the levels of 5-HT with good sensitivity, selectivity, affordability and low response time. Zinc oxide (ZnO) based field effect transistors (FET) with attributes like minimized noise levels and large on-off ratio are regarded as emerging high performance biosensor platforms. However, their response is significantly non-linear and there has been no appreciable endeavor for improving the non-linearity. METHOD In this paper, we have introduced embedded gate electrode encompassing the channel of the FET which improves the uniformity in electric field line distribution through the electrolyte and proportionately enhances the capture of target biomolecule at ultra low concentrations, thereby increasing the linearity. Further, we have incorporated the optimized parameters of ZnO nanorods reported previously, for rapid and selective detection of 5-HT. RESULTS It has been observed that the fabricated ZnO FET biosensor lowers the detection limit down to 0.1fM which is at least one order of magnitude lower than the existing reports. The sensor also has wide linear range from 0.1fM to 1nM with a detection time of about 20 minutes. CONCLUSION The proposed zinc oxide nanorod-based sensor can be used as an excellent tool for future diagnosis of neurological disorders.

Abstract
Immunomodulation is the process of alteration in immune response due to foreign intrusion of molecules inside the body. Along with the available drugs, a large number of herbal drugs are promoted in traditional Indian treatments, for their immunomodulating activity. Natural coumarinolignoids isolated from the seeds of Cleome viscose have been recognized as having hepatoprotective action and have recently been tested preclinically for their immunomodulatory activity affecting both cell-mediated and humoral immune response. To explore the immunomodulatory compound from derivatives of coumarinolignoids, a quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) and molecular docking studies were performed. Theoretical results are in accord with the in vivo experimental data studied on Swiss albino mice. Immunostimulatory activity was predicted through QSAR model, developed by forward feed multiple linear regression method with leave-one-out approach. Relationship correlating measure of QSAR model was 99% (R2 = 0.99) and predictive accuracy was 96% (RCV2 = 0.96). QSAR studies indicate that dipole moment, steric energy, amide group count, lambda max (UV-visible), and molar refractivity correlates well with biological activity, while decrease in dipole moment, steric energy, and molar refractivity has negative correlation. Docking studies also showed strong binding affinity to immunomodulatory receptors.

Abstract
Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) and histiocyte-associated lymphoma (HAL) of mice are difficult to distinguish histologically. Studies of multiple cases initially diagnosed as HS or HAL allowed us to define HS as round, fusiform, or mixed cell types that were F4/80+, Mac-2+, and PAX5-; that lacked markers for other sarcomas; and that had immune receptor genes in germline configuration. Two other subsets had clonal populations of lymphocytes. The first, HAL, featured malignant lymphocytes admixed with large populations of normal-appearing histiocytes. The second appeared to be composites of lymphoma and HS. Several cases suggestive of B myeloid-lineage plasticity were also observed.

Abstract
HELLP syndrome is a pregnancy-specific disorder defined by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count that is found in parturients, more frequent in older multiparas. It is frequently associated with severe preeclampsia or eclampsia, but can also be diagnosed in the absence of these disorders. The etiology of HELLP syndrome is unknown, and the pathogenesis of this disorder (including the hepatological manifestations) is not fully understood. The most widely accepted hypotheses are: a change in the immune feto-maternal balance, platelet aggregation, endothelial dysfunction, arterial hypertension and an inborn error of the fatty acid oxidative metabolism. Hepatic involvement occurs by intravascular fibrin deposition and hypovolemia. Serum LDH and platelet count are the two most important clinical tools for disease assessment. LDH reflects both the extent of hemolysis and hepatic dysfunction. Maternofetal complications cause a 7.0-70.0% perinatal mortality rate and a 1.0-24.0% maternal mortality rate. The recognition of HELLP syndrome and an aggressive multidisciplinary approach and prompt transfer of these women to obstetric centers with expertise in this field are required for the improvement of materno-fetal prognosis.

Abstract
Regiochemical study of nBu3SnH–AIBN-mediated aryl-radical cyclization of different 3-(2-bromophenyl sul fenylmethyl)coumarins, 3-(2-bromophenylsulfonyl-methyl)coumarins, and 6-[(2-bromophenoxy)methyl]-4-methoxypyran-2-ones have been investigated with the formation of different [6,6]-fused and spirocylic heterocycles. The sulfides and ethers were prepared from 3-chloromethyl coumarin and 6-(bromomethyl)-4-methoxy pyran-2-one with different 2-bromothiophenol and 2-bromophenols under classical alkylation condition. Abstract
Several diverse analogues of Oenostacin, a naturally occurring potent antibacterial phenolic acid derivative, have been synthesized. A small library with more than forty analogues having different aromatic rings and varied side chains has been achieved through solution phase synthesis. Some of these analogues, that is, 22, 23 and 42, possessed potent antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus having EC(50) ranging from 0.49 to 0.67 microM as compared to Oenostacin (EC(50)=0.12 microM).

Abstract
Regioselective synthesis of a hitherto unreported furothiopyran moiety fused at the C-5 and C-6 positions of a pyrimidine heterocycle was achieved by the application of sequential Claisen rearrangement in which a second aromatic Claisen rearrangement and intramolecular hydroaryloxylation were catalyzed by aluminum chloride. The second aromatic Claisen rearrangement step was also studied under thermal conditions to give mostly isomerized exocyclic compounds. The precursor endocyclic compounds were synthesized by thermal [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement of the corresponding sulfide.Key words: aluminum chloride, sequential Claisen rearrangement, hydroaryloxylation, furothiopyran, pyrimidine.

Abstract
LC-ESI-MS analysis was carried out for taxoid profiling of partially purified methanol extracts of the stem bark of Taxus wallichiana growing in different regions of the Himalayas (Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, UP hills, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh). Cone voltage fragmentation of the protonated, ammonium or sodium cationized molecular species resulted in diagnostic fragment ions. Thus, information about the number and nature of substituents and the taxane skeleton (whether it is normal or rearranged) was readily available from the LC-ESI-MS spectra. The rearranged 11(15-->1)-abeo-taxanes showed a characteristic elimination of the hydroxyisopropyl along with an acetoxy group. The identification of the taxoids was achieved by comparison of the ESI mass spectra with those of the authentic taxoids available to us or by interpreting the ESI mass spectra. The results were also corroborated by MS/MS analysis of the partially purified extract injected directly into the ESI source. Paclitaxel, its analogues and their xylosides are present in samples from all the regions. An interesting observation is the detection of a large number of basic taxoids having nitrogen-containing side chains.

Abstract
Ammonium cationisation has been used for taxoid profiling of partially purified methanolic extracts of needles of Taxus wallichiana growing in different regions of the Himalayas (Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, UP Hills, Darjeeling, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh) by electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The MS/MS spectra of the [M + NH4]+ or [M + H]+ ions gave structurally diagnostic fragment ions which revealed information about the taxane skeleton as well as the number and nature of the substituents. The rearranged 11(15-->1)-abeo-taxanes showed a characteristic elimination of the hydroxyisopropyl group with an acetoxy/benzoyloxy group from C-9. The identification of the taxoids was achieved by comparison of the MS/MS spectra with those of authentic taxoids or was based on biogenetic grounds. The results were corroborated by liquid chromatography-MS analysis. Out of the 50 taxoids identified, 21 belonged to the rearranged class. The presence of paclitaxel in the samples from four regions was confirmed: the study also revealed the occurrence of several basic taxoids in these samples. MS/MS profiling by electrospray ionisation was shown to be a fast and reliable technique for the analysis of taxoid samples.

Abstract
The mechanism of the elimination of 118 Da from 11(15-->1)-abeo-taxanes was elucidated with the help of the tandem mass spectra of [M + NH(4)](+) and [M + Li](+) ions and the corresponding D-exchanged species. The fragmentation is triggered by the initial loss of the C-10 substituent. Evidence was also obtained for the stepwise elimination of acetone and acetic acid. Acetone is eliminated from the C-1 hydroxyisopropyl group and acetic acid from either the C-9 or C-7 acetoxy groups. The presence of an additional acetoxy group at C-13 leads to the direct elimination of 118 Da from [M + NH(4)](+) and [M + Li](+) ions involving the C-13 acetoxy group.

Abstract
Hematopoietic neoplasms developing in AKXD recombinant inbred, NFS.V(+) and ICSBP knockout mice were assessed using morphologic, cytologic and molecular criteria that relate these disorders to human lymphoma and leukemia. Lymphoma types included precursor T-cell and B-cell lymphoblastic, small lymphocytic, splenic marginal zone, follicular, and diffuse large cell (DLCL). In addition to previously defined subtypes of DLCL composed of centroblasts or immunoblasts, two additional subtypes are defined here: lymphoblastic lymphoma like (LL) and lymphoma characterized by a histiocytic reaction (HS). DLCL(HS) were distinguished from true histiocytic lymphomas by the presence of clonal Ig gene rearrangements.

[70]Fullerene has been shown to form 1:1 molecular complexes with toluene, p-xylene, m-xylene, 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl benzene (durene) and pentamethyl benzene (PMB) in CCl4 medium by absorption spectroscopic method. Isosbestic points have been detected in case of complexes with PMB and durene. Charge transfer absorption band could not be detected but the intensity of the broad absorption band of C70 in CCl4 decreases systematically with increase in the concentration of the added methylbenzenes. From this trend the formation constants (Kc) of the complexes have been determined at three different wavelengths. The constancy of Kc with respect to change in the wavelength of measurement supports the view that complex of a single stoichiometry (1:1) is formed in each case.

Abstract
Studies of lymphoid neoplasms occurring in normal or genetically engineered mice have revealed parallels and differences to non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) of humans. Some mouse lymphomas have strong histologic similarities to the human NHL subsets including precursor B- and T-cell lymphoblastic, small lymphocytic, splenic marginal zone, and diffuse large-cell B-cell lymphomas (DLCL); whether molecular parallels also exist is under study. Others mouse types such as sIg+ lymphoblastic B-cell lymphoma have no histologic equivalent in human NHL even though they share molecular deregulation of BCL6 with human DLCL. Finally, Burkitt lymphoma does not appear to occur naturally in mice, but it can be induced with appropriately engineered transgenes.

Abstract
Cell suspension cultures of stem-derived callus of Taxus wallichiana in MS-F culture media were found to produce three C-14 oxygenated taxoids and one regular taxoid. The taxoids were identified as yunnanxane (1), 2 alpha, 5 alpha, 10 beta, 14 beta-tetraacetoxy-4(20),11-taxadiene (2), 2 alpha, 5 alpha, 10 beta-triacetoxy-14 beta-(2-methyl)-butyryloxy-4(20),11-taxadiene (3) and 1 beta-hydroxybaccatin I (4).

Abstract
BCL6 encodes a transcription factor deregulated by chromosomal translocations in human diffuse large cell B lymphomas (DLCL). This study was designed to determine whether Bcl6 might also be involved in lymphomas of mice. BCL6 protein was expressed at high levels in 90% or more of DLCL but not in low grade B lymphomas. Southern hybridisation studies demonstrated altered organisation of Bcl6 in three primary DLCL and the WEHI 231 B-cell lymphoma cell line but not in low grade tumours. Chromosomal painting and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) analyses of the WEHI 231 metaphase spreads revealed a T(5;16) translocation with Bcl6 on Chromosome 16 at the translocation breakpoint. Deregulated expression of BCL6 is thus likely to contribute to the genesis of DLCL of mice as well as of humans.

Abstract
Historically, Swiss Webster mice of the CFW subline, both inbred and random-bred stocks, have been considered to have a low spontaneous occurrence of hematopoietic system tumors, and previous reports of infectious expression of murine leukemia viruses (MuLVs) have been rare and unremarkable. In marked contrast, in the present study of CFW mice from one source observed by two laboratories over a 2-year period, nearly 60% developed tumors, 85% of which were lymphomas, the majority of B-cell origin. All tumors tested expressed ecotropic MuLVs, and most expressed mink cell focus-inducing (MCF) MuLVs. Among normal mice of weanling to advanced age, over one-half were positive for ecotropic virus in tail or lymphoid tissues, and MCF virus was frequently present in lymphoid tissue, less often in tail. Patterns of ecotropic proviral integration indicated that natural infection occurred by both genetic and exogenous routes. Lymphomas were induced in NIH Swiss mice infected as neonates with tissue culture-propagated MuLVs isolated from normal and tumor tissue of CFW mice.

Abstract
Spontaneous lymphomas occur at high frequency in NFS x V+ mice, strains congenic for ecotropic murine leukemia virus (MuLV) proviral genes and expressing virus at high titer. In the present study, a total of 703 NFS x V+ lymphomas were studied by histopathology, immunophenotypic analysis, immunoglobulin heavy chain or T cell receptor beta chain rearrangements, and somatic ecotropic MuLV integrations; 90% of the lymphomas tested were of B cell lineage. Low-grade tumors included small lymphocytic, follicular, and splenic marginal zone lymphomas, while high-grade tumors comprised diffuse large-cell (centroblastic and immunoblastic types), splenic marginal zone, and lymphoblastic lymphomas. Comparison of mice of similar genetic background except for presence (NFS x V+) or absence (NFS x V-) of functional ecotropic MuLV genomes showed that NFS x V-clonal lymphomas developed at about one-half the rate of those occurring in NFS x V+ mice, and most were low-grade B cell lymphomas with extended latent periods. In NFS x V+ mice, clonal outgrowth, defined by Ig gene rearrangements, was associated with acquisition of somatic ecotropic proviral integrations, suggesting that, although generation of B cell clones can be virus independent, ecotropic virus may act to increase the rate of generation of clones and speed their evolution to lymphoma. The mechanism remains undefined, because only rare rearrangements were detected in several cellular loci previously associated with MuLV insertional mutagenesis.

Abstract
A reversed-phase column liquid chromatography method for the analysis of taxol, 10-deacetylbaccatin III, baccatin IV, 1-hydroxybaccatin I, 2-acetoxybrevifoliol, brevifoliol, 2'-deacetoxydecinnamoyltaxinine J and 2'-deacetoxytaxinine J in yew needles has been developed using a Nova-Pak Phenyl column and a binary gradient profile. The various aspects of analysis such as extraction efficiency, detection limits, reproducibility and peak purity were validated using UV-Vis as well as photodiode array detection.

Abstract
Lack of health insurance coverage is associated with lack of accessibility to preventive health care services such as mammography screening, clinical breast examination, Papanicolaou smear test, digital rectal examination, proctoscopy examination, and cholesterol screening. State and federal public health agencies must have an understanding of insurance coverage of the population to plan intervention programs aimed at early detection of medical conditions. Using data from the March Supplement of the Current Population Survey for the years 1994, 1995, and 1996, this study examines the sources of health insurance coverage in the U.S. The implications of the findings for public health programs are discussed.

Abstract
Splenic marginal zone lymphomas (MZLs) have been found to occur at a high frequency in NFS.N mice congenic for high-expressing ecotropic murine leukemia virus (MuLV) genes from AKR and C58 mice. Based on morphological, immunological, and molecular studies of these mice, MZL is clearly recognizable as a distinct disease with a characteristic clinical behavior. MZL was staged according to the degree of accumulation and morphological change of cells within the splenic marginal zone, as follows: 1) a moderate increase in normal-looking MZ cells, judged to be prelymphomatous, and 2) MZL in three variants: i) distinct enlargement of MZ by normal-looking cells (MZL), ii) distinct enlargement of MZ by basophilic centroblast-like cells (MZL+), and iii) extensive splenic involvement by centroblast-like cells (MZL++). The rate of mitosis and apoptosis increases with lymphoma grade. In most cases, emergence of a dominant IgH clonal pattern in paired splenic biopsy and necropsy samples was correlated with progression. MZLs were transplantable and homed to the spleen. MZL may constitute a commonly occurring lymphoma type unrecognized, in part, because of the centroblastic morphology of high-grade MZL and possible overgrowth of lower-grade MZL by more aggressive follicular lymphomas.

Abstract
The molecular pathology and histogenesis of lymphomas in 56 retired breeder male and 14 12-week-old male homozygous p53-deficient (p53-/-) mice (C57BL/6TacfBR-[KO]p53 N4) were evaluated. Lymphomas were assessed by serial morphologic techniques, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and analysis of T cell receptor (TCR) or immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene rearrangements. We found two common types of lymphomas. T-cell lymphomas arose in the thymus through a sequence of lymphocyte depletion, medullary hyperplasia, and unilateral lymphoma. Tumor cells were CD3+, CD90+, and usually TCRalpha/beta+ and possessed clonal TCRbeta gene rearrangements. Thymic lymphoblastic lymphomas (LL) were highly malignant and quickly metastasized to the splenic white pulp and liver, even when the thymus was only slightly increased in weight. In the spleen, a novel lymphoma was found. Marginal zone hyperplasia led to marginal zone lymphoma (MZL), a well-differentiated lymphoma that usually expressed CD45R (B220) and CD5 at low levels and that had clonal IgH gene rearrangements. IgH gene rearrangements were also seen in spleens with marginal zone hyperplasias only. Hyperplastic and neoplastic marginal zone B cells expressed IgM at low to normal levels, as seen by FACS analysis and immunohistochemistry. These tumors only metastasized to the liver at a later stage, as they became less differentiated. Several mice had both types of tumors present in the spleen. Two B-cell lymphoblastic lymphomas of uncertain origin were also found. In this article, we discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for development of the lymphomas seen in these p53-deficient mice.

Abstract
Alleles at the Fv1 gene of inbred mice confer resistance to infection and spread of vertically or horizontally transmitted murine leukemia viruses (MuLV). The nucleotide sequence of Fv1 bears similarity to the gag of a human endogenous retrovirus, HERV-L, but is more closely related to the gag-coding sequence of a newly described class of HERV-L-related mouse endogenous retroviruses designated MuERV-L. Both observations suggest an origin of Fv1 from endogenous gag sequences. The molecular definition of Fv1 provided an opportunity to determine the phylogeny of the gene among wild mice and its relation to MuERV-L. PCR primers, chosen to include most of the coding region of Fv1 for both the n and b alleles, were used to amplify sequences from animals of the genus Mus, which were then sequenced. Closely related products were obtained from almost all animals examined that evolved after the separation from Rattus, in which the homologous gene was shown to be absent. A phylogenetic tree generated with Fv1 sequence data differs noticeably from that developed with sequence data from other genes. In addition, non-synonymous changes were found to be present twice as frequently as synonymous changes, a fact that departs from the standard behavior of a structural gene. These observations suggest that the Fv1 gene may have been subjected to possible horizontal transfers as well as to positive Darwinian selection.

Abstract
Reverse micelles were employed to test the accuracy of the widely accepted mechanism for alpha-chymotrypsin in a highly structured aqueous system similar to intracellular conditions. Results yielded from spectrophotometrical assays of the alpha-chymotrypsin catalyzed hydrolysis of both p-nitrophenyl acetate (p-NPA) and p-nitrophenyl trimethylacetate (p-NPTA) were kinetically analyzed to determine constants typical of the proposed mechanistic model. This was accomplished through the establishment of a control, i.e. the well studied buffer system, for comparison between the reverse micellular environment and a bulk aqueous solution. Control group results yielded kinetic constants in favor of the proposed mechanism (Km = 1.55 x 10(-5) +/- 1.40 x 10(-6) M for p-NPA and a Km = 4.97 x 10(-6) +/- 2.29 x 10(-7) M, Km(app) = 4.92 x 10(-6) +/- 2.33 x 10(-8) M, k2 = 4.34 x 10(-3) +/- 1.31 x 10(-3), k(cat) = 1.96 x 10(-3) +/- 2.47 x 10(-4), and Ks = 1.60 x 10(-5) +/- 4.61 x 10(-6) M for p-NPTA). In contrast, similar reactions of the enzyme in a reverse micellular system produced kinetic constants atypical to that representative of the textbook mechanism. (Km = 1.59 x 10(-4) +/- 2.70 x 10(-5) M, Ks = -8.67 x 10(-5) +/- 4.46 x 10(-5) M and Km(app) = -4.80 x 10(-5) +/- 7.05 x 10(-5) M for p-NPA and Km = 1.95 x 10(-4) +/- 9.28 x 10(-5) M, Km(app) = -1.79 x 10(-4) +/- 2.36 x 10(-5) M, and Ks = -3.95 x 10(-4) +/- 1.18 x 10(-4) M for p-NPTA). In addition to negative kinetic constants, alpha-chymotrypsin seemed to display characteristics indicative of super-activity and a hysteretic response. Overall, the widely accepted mechanism for alpha-chymotrypsin appeared to fail within the confines of reverse micelles, due to the direct influence of the system's highly structured form.

Abstract
A cDNA clone encoding a cellular protein that interacts with murine leukemia virus (MuLV) Gag proteins was isolated from a T-cell lymphoma library. The sequence of the clone is identical to the C terminus of a cellular protein, KIF4, a microtubule-associated motor protein that belongs to the kinesin superfamily. KIF4-MuLV Gag associations have been detected in vitro and in vivo in mammalian cells. We suggest that KIF4 could be involved in Gag polyprotein translocation from the cytoplasm to the cell membrane.

Abstract
The G1 cyclin, cyclin D1, has been implicated in the development of human and mouse tumors. Here we describe immunohistochemical analyses of cyclin D1 for a large panel of mouse B cell tumors. In addition, we characterize cyclin D1 expression in a series of cultured cell lines that represent transformed B cells at different stages of development. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that for low-grade lymphomas, cyclin D1 was expressed by 83% of centroblastic centrocytic (CBCC) and 14% of small lymphocytic lymphomas (SLL). For high-grade tumors, 28% of B lymphoblastic and 23% of centroblastic tumors expressed cyclin D1, while all immunoblastic lymphomas were negative. Studies of RNA and protein prepared from cultured B lineage tumors showed that cyclin D1 was expressed by all pre-B and most B cell tumors but not by cell lines representative of late B cell differentiation or by plasma cells. Expression of cyclin D1 in the lymphomas was not associated with alterations in the genomic structure of the Fis-1 (Bcl-1) common proviral integration site or cyclin D1 itself or with cell growth activity as assessed by expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).

Abstract
The reverse micelle is one of many models thought to have properties more nearly resembling the biological cellular environment, than does the traditional dilute-solution biochemical reaction system. In order to evaluate the results of EMF perturbation of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, the description of the AOT reverse-micelle model, with respect to its internal pH, effect of chemical inhibitors, temperature, and electromagnetic-field perturbation has herein been extended. Acetylcholinesterase and NADPH cytochrome-P450 reductase, reacting within the AOT reverse-micelle, exhibit a temperature vs. activity profile equivalent to the same reaction in a buffered dilute-solution environment. In reverse micelles, some inhibitors of AChE (propidium, and d-tubocurarine) have much less effect upon indophenol-acetate hydrolysis than they do in a dilute solution environment. Other inhibitors act in the same manner within the structured environment of the reverse micelle as in the conventional dilute solution reaction model. These differences are explicable in terms of mechanism of action of the individual inhibitors. Perturbation by low-intensity microwave fields has a similar inhibitory effect upon dilute-solution reactions, as those in the 'low-water-activity' environment of the reverse micelle. However, the interactions between physical and chemical perturbants are differently limited by the structure of the aqueous phase of the reverse micelle. pH of the 'internal' reverse-micelle environment is a function of the availability of H-ions supplied by system components. Use of indicator dyes show that the low-molarity buffers which are compatible with reverse-micelle stability, are often insufficient to maintain a constant pH. Too, in the reverse micelle, reaction rate, for proton yielding reactions, is dramatically greater than the rate of the same reaction in dilute solution at the same acidic pH.

Abstract
The mechanisms responsible for development of profound immunodeficiency and extensive lymphoproliferation that characterize infection of different species with retroviruses are only partially understood. In mice, it has been shown the activities of an unusual Gag protein are necessary and sufficient to induce these abnormalities in a syndrome designated mouse AIDS (MAIDS). Current studies suggest that complex, antigen-driven interactions between T cells and B cells result in polyclonal activation of both types of lymphocytes, aberrant cytokine production and late lymphomas.

Recent analysis of over 500 lymphomas occurring in NFS.V mice, congenic for Akv-type ecotropic MuLV structural genes, has revealed that about 90% are of B cell lineage as determined by demonstration of clonal rearrangements of Ig heavy chain genes, phenotyping by immunocytochemistry or cytofluorometric analysis, and by site and morphology of tumor. At least 40% of the B cell lymphomas were found to have their origin in the splenic marginal zone, a site only once before described for mouse lymphomas. Clonal somatic integrations of ecotropic MuLV occurred in 85% of tumors.

CD8+ T cells were previously shown to be important in preventing lymphoproliferation and immunodeficiency following infection of murine AIDS (MAIDS)-resistant mice with the LP-BM5 mixture of murine leukemia viruses. To further evaluate the mechanisms contributing to MAIDS resistance, we studied mice lacking CD8+ T cells or deficient in perforin due to knockout of the beta2-microglobulin (beta2M) or perforin gene, respectively. In contrast to wild-type, MAIDS-resistant controls, B10.A mice homozygous for the beta2M mutation and B10.D2 mice homozygous for the perforin mutation were diagnosed as having MAIDS by 5 to 8 weeks after infection by the criteria of lymphoproliferation, impaired proliferative responses to mitogens, and changes in cell populations as judged by histopathology and flow cytometry. Unexpectedly, there was no progression of lymphoproliferation through 24 weeks, even though immune functions were severely compromised. Expression of the defective virus responsible for MAIDS was enhanced in spleens of the knockouts in comparison with wild-type mice. These results demonstrate that perforin-dependent functions of CD8+ T cells contribute to MAIDS resistance but that other, non-CD8-dependent mechanisms are of equal or greater importance.

Abstract
Isoproturon, a nonhalogenated substituted phenylurea herbicide, was evaluated for its cumulative toxic effects on testicular histomorphology., steroid hormone biosynthesis-related enzymes, spermatogenesis and sperm cells in adult albino rats. The compound, suspended in refined groundnut oil, was administered (po) to rats for 10 weeks @ 0,200, 400 and 800 mg/kg/day for 6 days/week. Isoproturon, at 800 mg/kg dose, decreased epididymal sperm count and percentage of motile sperms and increased the percentage of morphologically abnormal sperm cells. At the same dose, diameter of seminiferous tubules was reduced, number of tubules per microscopic field was increased and the percentage of tubules with evidence of spermatogenesis decreased. However, the percentage of damaged tubules was increased with 400 and 800 mg/kg doses. Histoenzymological observations revealed dose-related reduction in the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and delta 5-3 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase. Activity of 17 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase was not affected appreciably. Overall findings suggest that isoproturon, at high dose, impairs androgen biosynthetic process, affects spermatogenesis and induces maturational anomalies of sperm cells in rat.

BACKGROUND A prominent feature of retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency in mice (MAIDS) is early polyclonal activation of CD4+ T cells followed by the appearance of monoclonal lymphomas marked by clonal proviral integrations. These events appear to occur independent of interleukin-2 (IL-2), suggesting the activity of an alternative growth-promoting pathway. We studied the possible contributions to T cell expansion of a gene, Gfi-1, previously shown to confer IL-2 independence to rat T cell lymphomas. MATERIALS, RESULTS, CONCLUSIONS We studied 17 mice with MAIDS that had clonal populations of T cells. Proviral integrations at Gfi-1 were detected in two animals. These integrations were associated with enhanced transcription of Gfi-1. Unexpectedly, elevated levels of Gfi-1 transcripts were also observed in four T cell lymphomas without detectable integrations at this locus. This suggests that IL-2-independent T cell growth in MAIDS may be driven by transcriptional activation of Gfi-1 by proviral insertion or transactivation.

Immune activation in murine AIDS (MAIDS) has been suggested to involve a superantigen (SAG). The possibility that SAGs encoded by mammary tumor virus (MTV) might be the source of stimulation was studied by using Mtv mice. Mtv- mice developed typical MAIDS, excluding a requirement for Mtv-encoded SAGs in the pathogenesis of this disorder.

Abstract
The two molecules (A and B) in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C7H8BrN3S, display different conformation. In both molecules, the S atom is trans to the NH2 group. The Br atoms of the two molecules approach each other at a distance of 3.573(2) A. The crystal structure of the bromine compound is isomorphous with that of its chlorine analogue. In the crystal structure, intramolecular N-H...N and intermolecular N-H...S hydrogen bonds help stabilize the molecular packing. The increased antibacterial activity of the title compound compared to that of its chlorine analogue may be attributed to the increase in electron density on the hydrazinic end of the thiosemicarbazide chain.

Abstract
Culture conditions have been standardized for initiation of callus cultures of Himalayan yew (Taxus wallichiana) using young stem and needle explants from mature trees. Cultures were established on a modified Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with various levels of auxins (2.4-D, NAA) and cytokinin (kinetin). A medium containing 0.25 mg/l kinetin and 5.0 mg/l 2.4-D was optimal for stem callus growth whereas the presence of 0.25 mg/l kinetin along with 3.0 mg/l NAA in the medium supported optimal needle callus growth. Growth of stem callus was faster than needle callus growth. Supplementation of ascorbic acid (30 mg/l) amongst various anti-phenolic agents tested significantly reduced browning of initiated callus. Two taxanes (2-deacetoxytaxinine 1 and 2'-deacetoxyaustrospicatine) known to occur in stem bark, have also been isolated from undifferentiated tissue of T. wallichiana in equal or higher yields, for the first time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify trends and factors related to maternal death, and areas that need improvement. METHODS A prospective national survey, a multistage sample of the hospitals of Saudi Arabia. The setting was a maternal mortality survey committee in Riyadh with field/area coordinators in different areas of the Kingdom. The subjects were women who died or who were dead on arrival in hospital during pregnancy or within 6 weeks of the end of pregnancy. All the data were coded and analyzed. EPINFO software was used to calculate the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and the relative risk for the necessary variables. RESULTS The MMR was 18 per 100,000 births (155/880 248). Mortality was higher in older multiparous women of low income and no education. Hemorrhage, both antepartum and postpartum, was the leading cause of maternal death, together with rupture of the uterus and abortive bleeding, constituting 43% of direct and 29% of total maternal deaths. Substandard care was identified in 73% of direct maternal deaths. CONCLUSIONS The MMR in Saudi Arabia compares favorably with that of developed countries and the oil-producing Gulf states. Improving the number of booked patients, especially older grand multiparas, increasing the availability of banked blood and adopting a positive approach towards life-saving surgery are likely to reduce maternal deaths.

Abstract
Isoproturon, a substituted phenylurea herbicide, was evaluated for its cumulative toxic effect on growth, organ weight and histomorphology of different organs in adult male rats. The compound (200, 400 and 800 mg/kg/day for 6 days/week), suspended in refined groundnut oil, was administered to rats p.o. for 7 and 10 weeks. There were no definite signs and symptoms of toxicity in treated rats but the herbicide significantly decreased the weekly body weight of rats at 800 mg/kg dose. Isoproturon, in all the three doses, increased the weight of liver in a dose-dependent manner. At 800 mg/kg dose, isoproturon increased the weight of kidney and heart, and decreased the weight of epididymis. Histopathological alterations in the organs were dose-dependent. Salient microscopic changes induced by isoproturon were hepatocellular degenerative changes and focal necrosis in liver, glomerular and tubular degeneration in kidney and haemosiderosis in spleen. Testis showed degeneration and desquamation of cells of germinal layers. Tubular lumens of testis and epididymis exhibited reduced number of spermatids and spermatozoa, respectively, indicating retardation of spermatogenesis.

Abstract
C57BL/6 (B6) mice develop a syndrome of progressive lymphoproliferation and immunodeficiency, murine AIDS (MAIDS), when infected with an etiologic replication-defective virus termed BM5def. Induction of MAIDS requires the presence of CD4+ T cells and B cells. B6 mice with altered conventional B cell function and a deficit in CD5+ B cells due to the xid mutation develop disease with a greatly prolonged latency. The association of this mutation with resistance to MAIDS was confirmed in studies of P.xid mice. To test the hypothesis that conventional B cells are required for rapid induction of disease, B6.xid mice were injected with spleen cells from nude mice or were given bone marrow from aged donors. Both sets of recipients developed advanced disease by 10 weeks post infection, suggesting that resistance to MAIDS in xid mutants may be due to effects of B cells other than the CD5+ subset.

Abstract
A three year maternal mortality survey in Saudi Arabia has identified the various epidemiologic risk factors for maternal deaths. Unbooked, uneducated and economically underprivileged females were at increased risk of maternal death, especially >para 7 females, who were found to be at increased risk of maternal death, particularly deaths due to hemorrhage, pulmonary embolism and uterine rupture. In Saudi Arabia, there are contradictory risk factors for maternal death; e.g. low female literacy rate, early marriage and unregulated high fertility, and affluence which has brought about improvements in all walks of life including health services. Increasing the number of booked patients, especially among the elderly grand multipara, improving the quality of emergency obstetric services and achieving a higher female education rate are likely to bring the present maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of 18 per 100,000 births down to a minimum. The MMR obtained in this study compared favorably with those of the oil-producing Gulf countries and the developing and developed countries of the world.

Abstract
Murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (MAIDS), induce in mice by a defective murine retrovirus (BM5def), is characterized by development of severe immunodeficiency and polyclonal lymphoid proliferation which progress to yield oligoclonal populations of T and B cells. Oligoclonal populations transferred to SCID mice grew as clonal CD4+ T cell or B cell lineage transplants having one or more unique clonal integrations of BM5def. In some cases, spleens of single donor mice were shown to contain both B cell and T cell lineage clones that could be transferred individually after separation and were clonally unrelated. Successful transplants were obtained from oligoclonal populations as early as 63 days after infection. Mouse strains both sensitive or moderately resistant to MAIDS yielded clonal transplants.
