Acyclovir eco-geno-toxicity in freshwater organisms

This study explores the eco-geno-toxic impact of Acyclovir (ACV), a widely used antiviral drug, on various freshwater organisms, given its increasing detection in surface waters. The research focused on non-target organisms, including the green alga Raphidocelis subcapitata, the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, the cladoceran crustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia, and the benthic ostracod Heterocypris incongruens, exposed to ACV to assess both acute and chronic toxicity. The results indicate that while acute toxicity occurs at environmentally not-relevant concentrations, a significant chronic toxicity for C. dubia (EC50 = 0.03 µg/L, NOEC = 0.02·10-2 µg/L), highlighted substantial environmental concern. Furthermore, DNA strand breaks and reactive oxygen species detected in C. dubia indicate significant increase at concentrations exceeding 200 µg/L. Regarding environmental risk, the authors identified chronic exposures to acyclovir causing inhibitory effects on reproduction in B. calyciflorus at hundreds of µg/L and hundredths of µg/L for C. dubia as environmentally relevant environmental concentrations. The study concludes by quantifying the toxic and genotoxic risks of ACV showing a chronic risk quotient higher than the critical value of 1and a genotoxic risk quotient reaching this threshold, highlighting the urgent need for a broader risk assessment of ACV for its significant implications for aquatic ecosystems.

The relative importance of salinization in lowland stream zooplankton: Implications of the ecosystem nutrient status

Salinization of aquatic systems is predicted to increase due to climate and land use changes. Nevertheless, community responses may be different according to the ecosystem characteristics and contextual scenarios. Small flowing waters are particularly vulnerable to salinization, which may impact on the biodiversity and ecosystem processes, but this remains unclear. We conducted a study in 42 lowland streams characterized by overall high nutrient levels along a salinity gradient between 2 and 160 g L-1 to analyze changes in zooplankton structural and functional metrics, and the grazing effects of zooplankton on phytoplankton affecting the energy transfer. Generalized additive models revealed that the analyzed metrics were relatively influenced by salinity, with factors related to trophic conditions playing an important role as well. Total abundance and biomass decreased along the salinity gradient while increasing at intermediate soluble reactive phosphorous concentrations (SRP) in the former and with a linear increase in the SRP in the latter case. Taxonomic richness decreased with salinity and dissolved inorganic nitrogen, with species replacement toward saline-tolerant ones according to the compositional and optimums analyses. In opposite, functional richness did not display any specific trend within the environmental gradients. This explains why zooplankton compositional changes were not reflected into shifts in the grazing pattern on phytoplankton, which was in turn driven by SRP and dissolved oxygen concentrations. Further research is a critical requirement in these poorly studied ecosystems for planning mitigation actions to the co-occurrence of eutrophication and salinization in a fast changing world.

Adequate nutrient intake mitigate the toxic effects of bromate on the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus

Bromate is receiving increased attention as a typical disinfection by-product in aquatic environments, but bromate toxicity tests on invertebrate such as Brachionus calyciflorus rotifer are inadequate. In the present study, the long-term toxicity tests on B. calyciflorus were performed during 21 days under the exposure of different bromate concentrations and two algal density conditions. Furthermore, we evaluated the feeding behaviors of the rotifers under the impact of bromate. The maximum population density of rotifers was significantly reduced at 100 and 200 mg/L bromate exposure at the two algal density conditions. However, we observed that the maximum population density and population growth rate of rotifers were higher at 3.0 × 106 cells/mL algal density than those at 1.0 × 106 cells/mL under the same conditions of bromate exposure. These results suggest that higher food density may have alleviated the negative effects of bromate on rotifers. Meanwhile, the ingestion rate at an algal density of 3.0 × 106 cells/mL was higher than that at 1.0 × 106 cells/mL. The present study provides a basic reference to comprehensively evaluate the toxic effects of bromate on aquatic organisms.

Advanced oxidation process of valsartan by activated peroxymonosulfate: Chemical characterization and ecotoxicological effects of its byproducts

In recent years, the antihypertensive drug Valsartan (VAL) has been detected in surface waters up to concentrations of 6300 ng/L, due to its high consumption and its mostly unchanged excretion. Moreover, wastewater treatment plants fail to completely mineralize/transform it, as evidenced by findings of up to 3800 ng/L in some effluents. In this paper, the possible degradation of VAL was evaluated through Fenton-like reaction with activation of peroxymonosulfate in the presence of Fe(II) under neutral conditions. Fourteen degradation byproducts were isolated and completely identified by both nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, five of which were discovered for the first time, and a mechanism of their formation was proposed. Furthermore, the potential acute and chronic toxicity of valsartan and its byproducts in the aquatic environment were evaluated in key organisms of the freshwater trophic chain belonging to producers and consumers, the alga Raphidocelis subcapitata and the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, respectively. Acute effects occurred at concentrations in the order of tens/hundreds of mg/L, far from those of environmental concern. As regards chronic effects, algae were not particularly affected by the parent compound and its derivatives, while rotifers were less affected by derivatives (effective concentrations at units/tens of μg/L) compared to valsartan (effective concentrations at hundreds of ng/L).

Transgenerational adaptation to ocean acidification determines the susceptibility of filter-feeding rotifers to nanoplastics

The adaptation of marine organisms to the impending challenges presented by ocean acidification (OA) is essential for their future survival, and mechanisms underlying OA adaptation have been reported in several marine organisms. In the natural environment, however, marine organisms are often exposed to a combination of environmental stressors, and the interactions between adaptive responses have yet to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the susceptibility of filter-feeding rotifers to short-term (ST) and long-term (LT) (≥180 generations) high CO2 conditions coupled with nanoplastic (NPs) exposure (ST+ and LT+). Adaptation of rotifers to elevated CO2 caused differences in ingestion and accumulation of NPs, resulting in a significantly different mode of action on in vivo endpoints between the ST+ and LT+ groups. Moreover, microRNA-mediated epigenetic regulation was strongly correlated with the varied adaptive responses between the ST+ and LT+ groups, revealing novel regulatory targets and pathways. Our results indicate that pre-exposure history to increased CO2 levels is an important factor in the susceptibility of rotifers to NPs.

Combined Effects of Warming and Imidacloprid on Survival, Reproduction and Population Growth of Brachionus calyciflorus (Rotifera)

Global warming and pesticide contamination are two stressors of high concern, but their combined effects on freshwater biota are controversial. This study investigated the combined effects of warming and imidacloprid (IMI) on survival (measured as life expectancy at hatching), reproduction (net reproductive rate), population growth (intrinsic rate of population increase) and sexual reproduction (proportion of sexual offspring) of Brachionus calyciflorus using a life table experiment. The results showed that compared with controls, treatments with IMI at 50-100 mg/L significantly decreased survival, reproduction and population growth of the rotifers at 20℃. The inhibiting effect at higher IMI concentrations on survival increased with increasing temperatures, but those on reproduction and population growth increased only when the temperature increased from 25℃ to 30℃. The proportion of sexual offspring decreased with increasing temperatures. When monitoring the ecological effects of pollutants, environmental temperature and the possible adaptation of rotifers to it should be taken into consideration.

Sensitivity of phytoplankton, zooplankton and macroinvertebrates to hydrogen peroxide treatments of cyanobacterial blooms

Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a promising method to acutely suppress cyanobacterial blooms in lakes. However, a reliable H₂O₂ risk assessment to identify potential effects on non-target species is currently hampered by a lack of appropriate ecotoxicity data. The aim of the present study was therefore to quantify the responses of a wide diversity of freshwater phytoplankton, zooplankton and macroinvertebrates to H₂O₂ treatments of cyanobacterial blooms. To this end, we applied a multifaceted approach. First, we investigated the 24-h toxicity of H₂O₂ to three cyanobacteria (Planktothrix agardhii, Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena sp.) and 23 non-target species (six green algae, eight zooplankton and nine macroinvertebrate taxa), using EC₅₀ values based on photosynthetic yield for phytoplankton and LC₅₀ values based on mortality for the other organisms. The most sensitive species included all three cyanobacterial taxa, but also the rotifer Brachionus calyciflores and the cladocerans Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia pulex. Next, the EC₅₀ and LC₅₀ values obtained from the laboratory toxicity tests were used to construct a species sensitivity distribution (SSD) for H₂O₂. Finally, the species predicted to be at risk by the SSD were compared with the responses of phytoplankton, zooplankton and macroinvertebrates to two whole-lake treatments with H₂O₂. The predictions of the laboratory-based SSD matched well with the responses of the different taxa to H₂O₂ in the lake. The first lake treatment, with a relatively low H₂O₂ concentration and short residence time, successfully suppressed cyanobacteria without major effects on non-target species. The second lake treatment had a higher H₂O₂ concentration with a longer residence time, which resulted in partial suppression of cyanobacteria, but also in a major collapse of rotifers and decreased abundance of small cladocerans. Our results thus revealed a trade-off between the successful suppression of cyanobacteria at the expense of adverse effects on part of the zooplankton community. This delicate balance strongly depends on the applied H₂O₂ dosage and may affect the decision whether to treat a lake or not.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in rotifers and cladocerans: Potential applications in ecotoxicology, ecophysiology, comparative endocrinology, and pharmacology

The G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily plays a fundamental role in both sensory functions and the regulation of homeostasis, and is highly conserved across the eukaryote taxa. Its functional diversity is related to a conserved seven-transmembrane core and invariant set of intracellular signaling mechanisms. The interplay between these properties is key to the evolutionary success of GPCR. As this superfamily originated from a common ancestor, GPCR genes have evolved via lineage-specific duplications through the process of adaptation. Here we summarized information on GPCR gene families in rotifers and cladocerans based on their evolutionary position in aquatic invertebrates and their potential application in ecotoxicology, ecophysiology, comparative endocrinology, and pharmacology. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted to examine the evolutionary significance of GPCR gene families and to provide structural insight on their role in aquatic invertebrates. In particular, most GPCR gene families have undergone sporadic evolutionary processes, but some GPCRs are highly conserved across species despite the dynamics of GPCR evolution. Overall, this review provides a better understanding of GPCR evolution in aquatic invertebrates and expand our knowledge of the potential application of these receptors in various fields.

Aerobic scope does matter in the temperature-size rule, but only under optimal conditions

We united theoretical predictions of the factors responsible for the evolutionary significance of the temperature-size rule (TSR). We assumed that (i) the TSR is a response to temperature-dependent oxic conditions, (ii) body size decrease is a consequence of cell shrinkage in response to hypoxia, (iii) this response enables organisms to maintain a wide scope for aerobic performance, and (iv) it prevents a decrease in fitness. We examined three clones of the rotifer Lecane inermis exposed to three experimental regimes: mild hypoxia, severe hypoxia driven by too high of a temperature, and severe hypoxia driven by an inadequate oxygen concentration. We compared the following traits in normoxia- and hypoxia-exposed rotifers: nuclear size (a proxy for cell size), body size, specific dynamic action (SDA, a proxy of aerobic metabolism) and two fitness measures, the population growth rate and eggs/female ratio. The results showed that (i) under mildly hypoxic conditions, our causative reasoning was correct, except that one of the clones decreased in body size without a decrease in nuclear size, and (ii) in more stressful environments, rotifers exhibited clone- and condition-specific responses, which were equally successful in terms of fitness levels. Our results indicate the importance of the testing conditions. The important conclusions were that (i) a body size decrease at higher temperatures enabled the maintenance of a wide aerobic scope under clone-specific, thermally optimal conditions, and (ii) this response was not the only option to prevent fitness reduction under hypoxia.

The relationship between zooplankton community and environmental factors of Ghrib Dam in Algeria

The effect of environmental factors on zooplankton diversity, abundance, and distribution in the Ghrib Dam water body was investigated for 2 years from June 2013 to May 2015. A total of 61 species of zooplankton were recorded, including 45 rotifers, 13 cladocerans, and 3 copepods. The zooplankton abundance fluctuated between 4 and 3363 ind.L^-1, and its Shannon-Wiener index of zooplankton diversity in Ghrib Dam varied from H' = 1.15 to 3.77 during the 2-year study period. The highest diversity index was recorded at sampling site S1 in January 2015, due to the increase of specific richness (Ni = 27, D_mg = 5.75). Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to determine the influence of environmental factors in structuring the zooplankton species for each group. The results of CCA revealed that the most significant environmental factors influencing zooplankton community were water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), phosphorus (PO₄^-), and NO₃^- (p < 0.05, Monte Carlo permutation test). Meanwhile, the appearance of Hexarthra sp., Collotheca pelagica, and Diaphanosoma brachyurum indicated a rise in WT. The existence of Filinia longiseta, Keratella quadrata, and Cyclops strenuus correlated with a rising of DO. Brachionus urceolaris, Filinia passa, Keratella tecta, Notholca acuminata, and Polyarthra dolichoptera positively coexisted in an increased PO₄^-. Daphnia longispina and Oxyurella tenuicaudis were positively associated with high concentration of NO₃^-.

Evaluation of the trophic status in three reservoirs in Algeria (north west) using physicochemical analysis and rotifers structure

The aim of this study is to examine the trophic state of three reservoirs located in the northwest of Algeria based on the physicochemistry of water and the community of rotifers. The measurements of the physicochemical variables were carried out monthly over a 2-year period from December 2015 to November 2017. The rotifers were sampled simultaneously. Abiotic and biotic indices such as the Carlson index, Q_B/T, and TSI_ROT were determined in order to classify the three reservoirs according to their trophic state. Thus, the diversity indices of Shannon-Wiener (H'), Margalef richness index (D), Pielou evenness (J'), and the density were calculated in order to study the structure of the rotifers. The Kruskal-Wallis test confirmed the heterogeneity of the physicochemical quality (P value < 0.05) among the three reservoirs. A total of 71 species were identified during this study. The result of the various indices affirms this heterogeneity and indicates a trophic state hypereutrophic for the Hammam Boughrara reservoir, eutrophic for the Bakhadda reservoir and meso-oligotrophic for Sidi Yacoub. The use of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) has shown that the structure of rotifers is influenced by local environmental factors. Some species such as the genus Brachionus species have shown their preference for extreme conditions. The use of biotic indices is highly recommended for the trophic state evaluation of reservoirs for a better water resources management.

Data on taxa composition of freshwater zooplankton and meiobenthos across Arctic regions of Russia

We present the presence/absence species list (Table 1) of rotifer, cladoceran, and copepod (Calanoida, Harpacticoida, and Cyclopoida) fauna from seven Arctic regions of Russia (the Kola Peninsula, the Pechora River Delta, the Bolshezemelskaya tundra, the Polar Ural, the Putorana Plateau, the Lena River Delta, and the Indigirka River Basin) based on our own and literature data. Our own records were obtained by analyzing samples of zooplankton, meiobenthos, and two cores of bottom sediments (from the Kola Peninsula and the Bolshezemelskaya tundra lakes) that we collected once in July or August in 1992, 1995–2017. To supplement the list, we used relevant literature with periods of research from the 1960s to the 2010s. The list is almost identical to “Dataset 2: Zooplankton and Meiofauna across Arctic Regions of Russia”, which was analyzed but not published in [1]. The detailed analysis of this list revealed the specific composition of the aquatic fauna associated with the climatic and geographical factors [1]. The data provide information on the current state of biodiversity and species richness in Arctic fresh waters and can serve as the basis for monitoring these environments and predicting how they are likely to change in the future.

Responses of stream zooplankton diversity metrics to eutrophication and temporal environmental variability in agricultural catchments

Eutrophication of rivers and streams in agricultural lands is one of the main threats for biodiversity and ecosystem functions. This study was focused on seven subtropical streams where agriculture is the predominant land use. We tested the hypothesis that (i) eutrophication causes a decrease in taxonomic and functional diversity of zooplankton, leading to potential consequences for the ecosystem integrity. Furthermore, given that the temporal variability in the environmental conditions of each stream may influence the species sorting mechanisms, we also hypothesized that (ii) streams with higher temporal environmental variability have greater taxonomic and functional alpha (α) and temporal beta (β_t) diversity measures regardless of the trophic state. Thus, we characterized the streams according to their trophic state and analyzed the zooplankton composition, α and β_t by using taxonomic and functional perspectives. We found differences in the zooplankton composition between mesotrophic and eutrophic streams. However, eutrophic streams supported similar taxonomic and functional α diversity and similar taxonomic β_t diversity to mesotrophic ones. These results were mainly explained by the occurrence of rare species occupying different temporal niches in eutrophic systems. On the contrary, functional β_t diversity was lower in the eutrophic streams, being nestedness the ecological mechanisms underlying the variability in the zooplankton functional groups. Streams with higher temporal environmental variability supported greater α taxonomic diversity. However, the β_t diversity metrics showed no correlation with the environmental variability, suggesting that the environmental filters of the studied systems were the overriding determinants of species turnover. Our study suggests that both taxonomic and functional perspectives should be considered to improve our knowledge on the biotic responses to environmental changes. Also, among all metrics analyzed on the zooplankton community, functional β_t diversity was the most sensitive indicator of the eutrophication impact.

Microalgal solutions in the cultivation of rotifers and artemia: scope for the modulation of the fatty acid profile

The microalgae Aurantiochytrium sp. (AUR), Isochrysis sp. (ISO), and Nannochloropsis sp (NAN) were studied as possible alternative feeds to well established commercial compound feeds for both rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) and Artemia franciscana. Fatty acid (FA) composition —relative (in % of total FAs) and absolute (in mg/g dw)—was determined in order to assess their potential for providing essential FAs. The FA profiles showed relevant differences between the four feeds (compound feed and the three microalgal species), but less stark than in the feeds themselves. Whereas Isochrysis sp. was relatively rich in DHA and poor in EPA, 18.6 ± 1.7% vs 0.6 ± 0.0%, respectively, Nannochloropsis sp. had the opposite pattern, 0.2 ± 0.3% vs 28.3 ± 0.7%. Aurantiochytrium sp. was rich in DHA (19.1 ± 0.2% corresponding to 89.8 ± 0.2 mg/g dw), but posed difficulties as a feed for both rotifers and artemia, given its low lipid incorporation and, in particular, poor DHA deposition. Rotifers fed the compound feed had the best combination of n3 PUFA levels (22.1 ± 0.1 mg/g dw), DHA contents (13.6 ± 0.4 mg/g dw), and DHA/EPA ratios (~3), being rotifers fed AUR and ISO feeds second best. Hence, these microalgae may deserve to be further explored as potential sources of specific FAs in rotifers and artemia.

Effect of salinity and temperature on the acute and chronic toxicity of arsenic to the marine rotifers Proales similis and Brachionus ibericus

Several abiotic factors influence the ecological responses of aquatic invertebrates to metal toxicity. We examined the effect of salinity (10, 20, and 30 psu) and temperature (25 and 32 °C) on acute and chronic arsenic (As) toxicity to the euryhaline rotifers, Proales similis and Brachionus ibericus. In general, higher salinities and low temperature resulted in lower arsenic toxicity. The population growth studies indicated that P. similis was more sensitive than B. ibericus to As. Arsenic toxicity intensified the vulnerability of P. similis to B. ibericus competition. Life table parameters decreased with increasing As levels in the medium. Chronic toxicity bioassays were more sensitive than acute toxicity tests for determining the adverse effect of As to rotifers. Our findings provide useful insights on the effect of arsenic on rotifer populations exposed to different temperature and salinity scenarios. Proales similis could be an important complement to brachionid rotifers for marine toxicity bioassays.

A long-term study on zooplankton in two contrasting cascade reservoirs (Iguaçu River, Brazil): effects of inter-annual, seasonal, and environmental factors

Background

In reservoirs, zooplankton strongly interact with the physical and chemical characteristics of water, and this interaction is mainly influenced by climate variation and the different methods used to manage the dam water level. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate how the distinct operating modes of two cascade reservoirs affected the richness, abundance, and composition of zooplankton, both spatially (intra and inter-reservoirs) and temporally (annual and seasonal). In this study, the upstream reservoir (Salto Santiago) operates using the storage method, with a water retention time (WRT) of 51 days, whereas the downstream reservoir (Salto Osório) operates using the run-of-river method, with a WRT of 16 days.

Methods

Zooplankton samples were collected for 16 consecutive years from the two reservoirs located on the Iguaçu River, Brazil. A total of 720 samples were collected. Four-way ANOVAs were used to determine the differences in richness and abundance of the zooplankton among years, periods, reservoirs, and environments. Multidimensional non-metric scaling (NMDS) and an analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) were used to describe similarity patterns in species composition. Finally, a canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to select the environmental predictors that best explained the variation in zooplankton abundance data.

Results

We identified a total of 115 taxa in this study, and rotifers were the richest group. In contrast, the copepods were the most abundant. The four-way ANOVA results showed significant differences in the species richness and abundance of the zooplankton among years, periods, reservoirs, and environments. The NMDS ordination and ANOSIM test indicated that the largest differences in zooplankton species composition were annual and seasonal differences. Finally, the CCA showed that these differences were mainly associated with changes in water transparency, temperature, and the chlorophyll a, phosphorus, and total dissolved solids concentrations.

Discussion

Inter-annual changes in zooplankton species composition showed that over time, large filters-feeders (e.g., large daphinids and calanoid copepods) were replaced by small cladocerans (e.g., bosminids) and generalist rotifers. The highest species richness was associated with the fluvial environment, whereas the highest abundance was associated with the transitional and lacustrine reservoir environments. Variations in water temperature, nutrients, and food availability explained the annual and seasonal changes in community structure, whereas variations in the water flow characteristics of the environments explained the longitudinal changes in the richness and abundance of zooplankton in reservoirs. The differences in zooplankton structure between the two reservoirs can be explained by the functional differences between the two systems, such as their WRTs and morphometrics.

The effects of nanoplastics on marine plankton: A case study with polymethylmethacrylate

Marine biota is currently exposed to plastic pollution. The biological effects of plastics may vary according to polymer types (e.g. polystyrene, polyethylene, acrylate), size of particles (macro, micro or nanoparticles) and their shape. There is a considerable lack of knowledge in terms of effects of nanoplastics (NP) to marine biota particularly of polymers like polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Thus, this study aimed to assess its ecotoxicological effects using a battery of standard monospecific bioassays with four marine microalgae (Tetraselmis chuii, Nannochloropsis gaditana, Isochrysis galbana and Thalassiosira weissflogii) and a marine rotifer species (Brachionus plicatilis). The tested PMMA-NP concentrations allowed the estimation of median effect concentrations for all microalgae species. T. weissflogii and T. chuii were respectively the most sensitive (EC_50,96h of 83.75 mg/L) and least sensitive species (EC_50,96h of 132.52 mg/L). The PMMA-NP were also able to induce mortality in rotifers at concentrations higher than 4.69 mg/L with an estimated 48 h median lethal concentration of 13.27 mg/L. A species sensitivity distribution curve (SSD), constructed based on data available in the literature and the data obtained in this study, reveal that PMMA-NP appears as less harmful to marine biota than other polymers like polystyrene.

Growth and toxicity of Halomicronema metazoicum (Cyanoprokaryota, Cyanophyta) at different conditions of light, salinity and temperature

Cyanobacteria may live in the water column and in the benthos of aquatic environments, or be symbionts of other organisms, as in the case of Phormidium-like cyanobacteria, known to influence the ecology of freshwater and marine ecosystems. A strain of Phormidium-like cyanobacteria has been recently isolated as a free-living epiphyte of leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile in the Mediterranean sea and its biology and ecology are herein investigated. It was identified as Halomicronema metazoicum, previously known uniquely as a symbiont of marine sponges. We cultivated it in a range of light irradiances, temperatures and salinities, to establish the most suitable conditions for the production of allelopathic and toxic compounds. The bioactivity of its spent culture medium was measured by means of standard toxicity tests performed on two model organisms. Our results indicate that at least two bioactive compounds are produced, at low and high irradiance levels and at two temperatures. The main compounds influencing the survival of model organisms are produced at the highest temperature and high or intermediate irradiance levels. The present research contributes to the understanding of critical toxigenic relationships among cyanobacteria and invertebrates, possibly influencing the ecology of such a complex environment as P. oceanica Future isolation, identification and production of bioactive compounds will permit their exploitation for biotechnologies in the field of ecological conservation and medical applications.

Zooplankton changes during bottom-up and top-down control due to sustainable restoration in a shallow urban lake

Long-term cyanobacterial blooms and hypereutrophic state have been typical for the shallow, urban Swarzędzkie Lake for many years. Diversion of sewage did not change its trophic status, so restoration began in autumn 2011 using the sustainable approach based on three methods. The aim of the study was to analyse how sustainable restoration affects zooplankton. We hypothesised that bottom-up and top-down methods reconstructed zooplankton composition. Thus, the abundance of large-size cladocerans increased and controlled phytoplankton effectively. The elimination of cyanobacteria bloom, the decrease of rotifer abundance and the twofold increase of filter-feeder effectiveness were observed in summer 2012. However, high phosphorus concentration, lack of regular cyprinid removal and insufficient fish stocking together with high temperature prevented zooplankton from controlling cyanobacteria bloom in summer 2013. Rotifer domination with high trophy species was noted, as before restoration. The number of rotifers decreased in 2014, while crustaceans increased due to the significant decrease of nutrient concentrations and an intensification of biomanipulation treatments. Therefore, summer phytoplankton growth was low, without cyanobacteria dominance. The rebuilding of zooplankton in Swarzędzkie Lake was observed during sustainable restoration. However, the treatments should be intensified when adverse changes were observed to obtain better results for the improvement of water quality.

Is stemflow a vector for the transport of small metazoans from tree surfaces down to soil?

Background

Stemflow is an essential hydrologic process shaping the soil of forests by providing a concentrated input of rainwater and solutions. However, the transport of metazoans by stemflow has yet to be investigated. This 8-week study documented the organisms (< 2 mm) present in the stemflow of different tree species. Because the texture of the tree bark is a crucial determination of stemflow, trees with smooth bark (Carpinus betulus and Fagus sylvatica) and rough bark (Quercus robur) were examined.

Results

Up to 1170 individuals per liter of stemflow were collected. For rotifers and nematodes, a highly positive correlation between abundance and stemflow yield was determined. Both taxa were predominant (rotifers: up to 70%, nematodes: up to 13.5%) in the stemflow of smooth-barked trees whereas in that of the oak trees collembolans were the most abundant organisms (77.3%). The mean number of organisms collected per liter of stemflow from the two species of smooth-barked trees was very similar. A higher number of nematode species was found in the stemflow of these trees than in the stemflow of rough-barked oak and all were typical colonizers of soil- and bark-associated habitats.

Conclusion

This pilot study showed for the first time that stemflow is a transport vector for numerous small metazoans. By connecting tree habitats (e.g., bark, moss, lichens or water-filled tree holes) with soil, stemflow may influence the composition of soil fauna by mediating intensive organismal dispersal.

Ecotoxicological effects of polystyrene microbeads in a battery of marine organisms belonging to different trophic levels

The aim of this study was to detect ecotoxicological effects of 0.1 μm polystyrene microbeads in marine organisms belonging to different trophic levels. MP build up, lethal and sub-lethal responses were investigated in the bacterium Vibrio anguillarum (culturability), in the green microalga Dunaliella tertiolecta (growth inhibition), in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (mortality and swimming speed alteration) and in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (immobility and swimming speed alteration) exposed to a wide range of microplastic (MP) concentrations (from 0.001 to 10 mg L^-1). Survival was not affected in all organisms up to 10 mg L^-1, while algal growth inhibition, rotifer and sea urchin larvae swimming behaviour alterations were observed after exposure to MPs. Ingestion was only observed in rotifers and it was directly correlated with sub-lethal effects. These results account for the ecotoxicological risk associated to the polystyrene microbeads, which are able to affect different endpoints in primary producers and consumers (rotifers and sea urchins) since no effects were observed in decomposers. This study points out the importance of using a battery of marine organisms belonging to different trophic levels by studying acute toxicity of MPs at low and high contamination levels, and investigating sub-lethal responses. Further investigations aimed at studying the transfer of these materials through the web are particularly recommended.

Mixture of commercial herbicides based on 2,4-D and glyphosate mixture can suppress the emergence of zooplankton from sediments

It is generally assumed that zooplankton can recolonize lakes that have been exposed to pesticides, via their dormant egg banks. Hitherto, few studies have evaluated the relative importance of dormant egg bank recruitment in the re-establishment of zooplankton communities in the presence of pesticide. This study investigated the effects of commercial products Bratt® (a.i. 2,4-D), Roundup® (a.i. glyphosate) and their mixture on the emergence (abundance and taxon richness) of dormant zooplankton egg banks from natural lake sediment. Sediment samples were collected from the surface sediment (<10 cm depth) in four lakes in Southeast São Paulo, Brazil. We performed a hatching experiment, in which natural lake sediments containing dormant eggs were exposed separately to Bratt® (applied concentrations ranging from 0.30 to 20 mg L-1), Roundup® (0.28-8.5 mg L-1), and combined mixtures of all concentrations, plus one control (non-exposure to formulated herbicides) for a period of 28 days. All tested concentrations of Bratt®, Roundup® and their mixture reduced the abundance and taxon richness of emerging zooplankton (except 2 mg L-1 of Bratt®). This effect was more pronounced in rotifers. In comparison, there were no negative effects on the emergence of microcrustaceans. These findings suggest that commercial products Bratt®, Roundup® and their mixture can suppress the emergence of rotifers, thereby influencing zooplankton recruitment potential in lakes impacted by the presence of these commercial herbicides. Our results stress the importance of the need for additional studies to assess the effects of pesticides on dormant egg banks.

Restoration of a shady urban pond - The pros and cons

The Bzura-7 pond (Łódź, Poland) is a typical shallow and shady urban reservoir situated on the Bzura River that is exposed to pollutants introduced mainly by internal loads and the supply from the catchment. In 2010-2012, the following characteristics were observed in the pond: a high allochthonous input of organic matter, high concentration of ammonium, low concentration of dissolved oxygen and low diversity of zooplankton, dominated mainly by Daphnia spp. From January to June 2013, restoration measures were performed, including sediment removal, increasing light access to the pond and construction of a sequential sedimentation-biofiltration system (SSBS). The aim of the present study was to investigate how the water quality in the Bzura-7 pond was affected by the restoration process, which included reducing pollutant inflows and enhancing habitat potential, thus increasing the diversity of this ecosystem. Restoration efforts improved the chemical and physical parameters of the water. The oxygen concentration increased, and the concentrations of TN and ammonium significantly decreased. Despite the increase in pond lighting, the growth of cyanobacteria was limited. However, we observed increased abundance of green algae and diatoms but less than adequate changes in the zooplankton community structures. Although we observed a significant increase in the zooplankton species richness after restoration, this increase was related to the small-bodied groups of zooplankton, rotifers and bosminiids, characteristic of eutrophic ecosystems. In addition, a planktivorous fish - sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) - was identified as an unintended side effect of the restoration effort. Further conservation efforts in the Bzura-7 pond and monitoring of results are still needed.

Role of rotifers in microzooplankton community in a large monsoonal estuary (Cochin backwaters) along the west coast of India

The distribution ecology of microzooplankton in the Kochi (Cochin) backwaters has been presented. Emphasis has been given to the micro-rotifers present in the environment, considering they were a hitherto ignored component of the microzooplankton in the past studies. Three seasonal samplings were carried out at six locations along the salinity gradients in the Kochi backwaters during the Pre-Monsoon (March), Southwest Monsoon (August), and Northeast Monsoon (December). A total of 48 species of microzooplankton were recorded, of which 35 were ciliates, 10 were rotifers, and 3 were heterotrophic dinoflagellates. The study also reports the swarm of a microzooplankton species from the Kochi backwaters, which was formed by a tintinnid ciliate, Tintinnopsis uruguayensis, during the Northeast Monsoon. Very high microzooplankton density (11,990 No. L^-1), as swarm in the downstream location was associated with the mesohaline condition and high availability of food. Rotifers were the major component of microzooplankton in the limnohaline/oligohaline region, whereas ciliates dominated in the polyhaline/mesohaline region. Hence, in the present study, salinity appeared to be a major factor affecting the composition of the microzooplankton community in the Kochi backwaters. As rotifers have a wide food spectrum, they can feed on almost all components of the microbial food web, including small ciliates. They also share the same food spectrum with larger ciliates and crustacean nauplii. The present study, for the first time, recorded the importance of rotifers in the microzooplankton community in the plankton food web in the Kochi backwaters.

Effect of crude extracts from cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Texcoco (Mexico) on the population growth of Brachionus calyciflorus (Rotifera)

Unlike temperate regions, tropical ecosystems are characterized by high temperatures (>18 °C) all year, promoting blooms of cyanobacteria which often produce secondary metabolites toxic to zooplankton. Nabor Carillo and the Recreational Lake are part of the saline, Lake Texcoco, in Central Mexico which is filled nowadays with treated waste water. Both water bodies are dominated by Planktothrix, Anabaenopsis, Spirulina and Microcystis. In this study we present the concentration of microcystins in these waterbodies over an annual cycle. We also evaluated the chronic effects of cyanobacterial crude extracts from both lakes on two clones of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, one from Nabor Carrillo Lake and the other from a canal in the shallow, Lake Xochimilco. The experiments on population growth were performed, beginning with 10 individuals per container for each of the following treatments: control (no crude extract), concentrated crude extract, and diluted crude extract (50:50) with moderately hard water and Chlorella vulgaris in a concentration of 0.5 × 10⁶ cells ml^-1. The cyanotoxin levels were measured using an ELISA test and ranged between 0.20 and 2.4 μg L^-1 in the lake water. The results showed that the Recreational Lake extracts were more toxic, killing the rotifers in less than five days. The r values ranged from -1.74 to 0.48 in the presence of the crude extracts and 0.16 and 0.24 in the controls. The results have been discussed with emphasis on the importance of conducting regular studies to test ecotoxicological impacts of cyanobacterial blooms in tropical waters.

Free ammonia offers algal crop protection from predators in dairy wastewater and ammonium-rich media

Cost-effective methods for protecting crops from grazing organisms like rotifers are needed to reduce the risk of pond crashes in mass algal cultures. We present a novel strategy to optimize the exposure time to free ammonia, via control of media pH, in both defined media and dairy anaerobic digester effluent to suppress rotifers and maintain algal productivity. We tested five different free ammonia exposure times (0, 1, 2, 6, and 12h) and found a significant nonlinear effect of exposure time (p<0.0001) but not pH (p>0.9) on rotifer survival. In both media types, 6-12h of elevated free ammonia significantly reduced Brachionus plicatilis rotifer survival with no negative effects on Nannochloropsis oculata, while shorter exposure times were insufficient to inhibit rotifers, leading to severe algal culture crashes. These results suggest that algal crops can be protected from rotifers, without productivity loss, by elevating free ammonia for 6 or more hours.

The impact assessment of anticancer drug imatinib on the feeding behavior of rotifers with an integrated perspective: Exposure, post-exposure and re-exposure

The anticancer drugs are getting increasing attention as an emerging contaminant in the aquatic environments. In the present study, feeding behavior of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus under the impact of anticancer drug imatinib was evaluated. Traditional toxicological studies usually focus on dose-effect relationship at a given exposure time, while ignore the possible impact after the exposure. Thus, how the impact varied in the post-exposure and re-exposure was also considered in the present study. The feeding depression of the rotifers was attributed to the increased concentration of imatinib. Although the filtration and ingestion rate of the rotifers recovered to a certain extent after the exposure, the significant feeding inhibition still persisted even if the exposure was ended. In the re-exposure period, the feeding behavior was less depressed than those of the exposure period, which implied that rotifers might develop a tolerance to the same toxics. The activities of acetylcholine esterase (AchE) and the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rotifers were also detected. Imatinib inhibited the activities of AchE in the exposure and re-exposure while ROS levels increased significantly in the re-exposure period. Our present study provided an integrated assessment the potential environmental risks of imatinib at a new perspective.

Feeding preference and daily ration of 12 dominant copepods on mono and mixed diets of phytoplankton, rotifers, and detritus in a tropical coastal water

Results of the experimental studies on the feeding habit and daily ration (DR) of 12 dominant copepods from a tropical coastal water (off Kochi, Southwest coast of India) on different food items (phytoplankton, rotifers, and detritus) are presented. Even though, all species of copepods consumed all types of food items in the experiments, they showed noticeable feeding preferences, having important ecological implications. Calanoid Paracalanus parvus and Acrocalanus gracilis consumed phytoplankton and rotifers equally in mono diets (74-89% of DR) and mixed diets (53-82% of DR), which indicated their ability to shift their diet in natural environment based on the availability of food items. Calanoid Acartia erythraea and A. danae consumed more phytoplankton (DR 83 and 72%, respectively) than rotifers (DR 51 and 46%, respectively) in mono diets, and in mixed diets, their consumption was high in phytoplankton combined food mixtures (P + R DR and P + D DR) rather than the R + D food type, indicated their preference for mixed diets of phytoplankton. Similarly, Calanoid Temora turbinata, Pseudodiaptomus serricaudatus, and Centropages tenuiremis preferred a herbivorous diet as evidenced by their high ingestion rate on phytoplankton mono (70 to 87% to their DR) and mixed diets (58 to 80% of DR). On the other hand, Cyclopoid Oithona similis and Poecilostomatoid Corycaeus danae preferred a carnivorous diet, consuming more rotifers (> 80% of DR) than phytoplankton (18-20% of DR) and detritus (5-6% of DR). Harpacticoids Macrosetella gracilis and Euterpina acutifrons equally preferred phytoplankton (78-92% of DR) and detritus (65-89% of DR). The study showed that the dominant copepods in the coastal waters off Kochi occupy different trophic niches available in the environment, which may be applicable in other similar environments as well.

Toxicity evaluation of cypermethrin, glyphosate, and malathion, on two indigenous zooplanktonic species

In Aguascalientes, Mexico, there is a special concern about pesticides because of their intensive use on guava production areas, which are located in the vicinity of water reservoirs; thus, non-target organisms could be exposed. Thereafter, the aim of this work was to assess the effect of cypermethrin, Faena® (glyphosate), and malathion, which are the most used pesticides in Aguascalientes' guava production, on the indigenous freshwater species Alona guttata (cladoceran) and Lecane papuana (rotifer). Acute 48-h toxicity tests were carried out, and LC50 values were calculated. Then, five sublethal concentrations (1/80, 1/40, 1/20, 1/10, and 1/5 of the respective LC50) were selected for the chronic assays: (a) intrinsic growth rate analysis in the rotifer and (b) partial life table analysis in the cladoceran. The results of the acute toxicity tests showed that A. guttata was more sensitive to malathion (LC50 = 5.26 × 10-3 mg/L) at concentrations found in natural environments with continuous application on guava fields, whereas L. papuana was more sensitive to Faena® (LC50 = 19.89 mg/L). The somatic growth of A. guttata was inhibited for the chronic exposure to cypermethrin. In addition, cypermethrin and Faena® seemed to exert endocrine disruptive effects on A. guttata. Moreover, malathion chronic exposure significantly decreased the survival of A. guttata. Moreover, L. papuana was affected chronically for the three pesticides.

Effects of experimental addition of nitrogen and phosphorus on microbial and metazoan communities in a peatbog

Interactions between microbial communities and the classical grazing food chain are essential for understanding the functioning of peatbog ecosystems. However, little is known of how short-term intensification of eutrophication processes may influence microbial and metazoan communities in transitional peatbog. We addressed the hypothesis that an increase in the concentration of nutrients will affect the species richness and abundance of microorganisms and small metazoans and cause changes in the food web structure in a peatbog. The experiments were performed in a transitional peatbog. Four experimental variants were conducted (control and nutrient-enriched: +P, +N and P+N). Increased habitat fertility was found to modify the taxonomic composition and functioning of microbial communities. We observed a strong reduction in the species richness of testate amoebae-top predators, and a substantial increase in the abundance of bacteria, flagellates and ciliates. A better understanding of which parameters regulate microbial populations in peatbogs is critical for more accurate prediction of how peatbogs will respond to global climate change or anthropogenic disturbances.

Metal stress in zooplankton diapause production: post-hatching response

Aquatic organisms commonly respond to harsh conditions by forming diapausing stages, which enable populations to survive adverse periods forming egg banks. Production of diapausing eggs is frequently observed in monogonont rotifers, previously changing from asexual to partial sexual reproduction (mixis). In despite that zooplankton are frequently used in ecotoxicological assessment because of their sensitivity to various toxicants and their important role in the ecosystems, toxicity evaluations often consider the directly exposed population produced by parthenogenetic reproduction, exclusively. We assessed experimentally effects of exposure to metals on mixis delay and fitness of hatchlings of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis obtained from a brackish water lagoon with high metal content, especially copper. We show that sub-lethal concentrations of copper affected traits related to sexual reproduction and diapausing egg production in the rotifer. Copper addition did not delay the start of mixis, suggesting that rapid initiation of mixis is promoted in risky environments, according to the hypothesis of mixis as an escape strategy. Higher investment in mixis was obtained when individuals were exposed to metal. Addition of copper negatively affected the hatching success of diapausing eggs and performance of hatchlings. Nevertheless, these effects were greater for individuals formed in non-metal conditions, suggesting an adaptive advantage of populations from natural sediments exposed to copper. These results highlight the ecological and evolutionary consequences of the presence of metals in freshwater environments by modulating diapause adaptive efficacy and the selective process in egg banks.

Spatial and temporal variations reveal the response of zooplankton to cyanobacteria

The effects of cyanobacteria on zooplankton abundance, structure and diversity were investigated, based on a systematic study on spatial and temporal variations of cyanobacteria and zooplankton in Lake Taihu from 1998 to 2007. It was found that similar increasing trends of cyanobacteria/phytoplankton ratios were accompanied by different trends in biomass, composition and biodiversity of zooplankton in different regions of the lake; the cladocerans benefitted from the increase in cyanobacteria; however, rotifers and protozoans were negatively affected by cyanobacteria. The biomass-based biodiversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton was negatively affected by cyanobacteria as well, and the adverse effects were in proportion to the cyanobacteria/phytoplankton ratio. These results indicated interestingly that higher amounts of cyanobacteria do not necessarily reduce zooplankton biomass, as the biomass of larger zooplankton such as cladocerans was positively related to cyanobacteria. The findings are essential to understand the complex ecological effects of cyanobacteria blooms in lakes.

Diapause as escape strategy to exposure to toxicants: response of Brachionus calyciforus to arsenic

Invertebrate organisms commonly respond to environmental fluctuation by entering diapause. Production of diapause in monogonont rotifers involves a previous switch from asexual to partial sexual reproduction. Although zooplankton have been used in ecotoxicological assays, often their true vulnerability to toxicants is underestimated by not incorporating the sexual phase. We experimentally analyzed traits involved in sexual reproduction and diapause in the cyclically parthenogenetic freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, exposed to arsenic, a metalloid naturally found in high concentrations in desert zones, focusing on the effectiveness of diapause as an escape response in the face of an adverse condition. Addition of sublethal concentrations of arsenic modified the pattern of diapause observed in the rotifer: investment in diapause with arsenic addition peaked earlier and higher than in non-toxicant conditions, which suggests that sexual investment could be enhanced in highly stressed environmental conditions by increased responsiveness to stimulation. Nevertheless, eggs produced in large amount with arsenic, were mostly low quality, and healthy-looking eggs had lower hatching success, therefore it is unclear whether this pattern is optimum in an environment with arsenic, or if rather arsenic presence in water bodies disturbs the optimal allocation of offspring entering diapause. We observed high accumulation of arsenic in organisms exposed to constant concentration after several generations, which suggests that arsenic may be accumulated transgenerationally. The sexual phase in rotifers may be more sensitive to environmental conditions than the asexual one, therefore diapause attributes should be considered in ecotoxicological assessment because of its ecological and evolutionary implications on lakes biodiversity.

Temporal and spatial variations in rotifer correlations with environmental factors in Shengjin Lake, China

Shengjin Lake is an important wintering and stopover habitat for migratory birds en route from East Asia to Australia. The authors investigated the rotifer community structure and environmental factors in upper Shengjin Lake from February to July of 2014. A total of 17 genera and 31 species of rotifers were identified, the dominant species being Brachionus angularis, Brachionus calyciflorus, Asplanchna priodonta, and Schizocerca diversicornis. Rotifer density and the nutrient salt content were higher in the areas inhabited by migratory birds. The highest density (176.0 ind./L) was recorded in June, the lowest (14.0 ind./L) in April. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and correlation analysis showed that some environmental factors, such as temperature, pH, water depth, Secchi depth (SD), and chlorophyll a concentration, had a considerable effect on the lake's rotifer community structure.

Effect of high levels of the rotifer Lecane inermis on the ciliate community in laboratory-scale sequencing batch bioreactors (SBRs)

Due to its ability to feed on filamentous bacteria, the rotifer Lecane inermis has already been recognized as a potential control agent of activated sludge bulking, which is usually caused by the excessive growth of filamentous microorganisms. However, their effectiveness depends, in part, on their abundance. We studied the influence of high densities of L. inermis on the protozoan community in activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in 4 laboratory-scale sequencing batch bioreactors (SBRs). Two treatments and two controls were subjected to nutrient removal system in process similar to that used in a WWTP. The experiment lasted 9 days and was repeated in 24-h cycles, including phases of agitation with feeding, aeration and agitation and sedimentation with decantation at the end of the cycle. In total, 32 taxa were identified, among which 25 were ciliated protozoa, 4 were amoebae, 2 were flagellates, and one was a nematode. Rotifers were then introduced to 2 bioreactors at a final concentration of 500ind.mL(-1), and the taxonomic composition and abundance of the activated sludge microfauna were assessed 2, 5 and 8 days thereafter. The mean density of ciliates on the first day of experiment was 12,610ind.mL(-1) and diminished to 4868±432ind.mL-±432ind.mL(-1) in the control and 5496±638ind.mL(-1) in the rotifer-treated group on the last day. Thus, even extremely high densities of artificially introduced rotifers did not negatively affect the protozoan community. On the contrary, the protozoan community was more diverse in the treatment group than in the control.

Copepods enhance nutritional status, growth and development in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) larvae - can we identify the underlying factors?

The current commercial production protocols for Atlantic cod depend on enriched rotifers and Artemia during first-feeding, but development and growth remain inferior to fish fed natural zooplankton. Two experiments were conducted in order to identify the underlying factors for this phenomenon. In the first experiment (Exp-1), groups of cod larvae were fed either (a) natural zooplankton, mainly copepods, increasing the size of prey as the larvae grew or (b) enriched rotifers followed by Artemia (the intensive group). In the second experiment (Exp-2), two groups of larvae were fed as in Exp-1, while a third group was fed copepod nauplii (approximately the size of rotifers) throughout the larval stage. In both experiments, growth was not significantly different between the groups during the first three weeks after hatching, but from the last part of the rotifer feeding period and onwards, the growth of the larvae fed copepods was higher than that of the intensive group. In Exp-2, the growth was similar between the two copepod groups during the expeimental period, indicating that nutrient composition, not prey size caused the better growth on copepods. Analyses of the prey showed that total fatty acid composition and the ratio of phospholipids to total lipids was slightly different in the prey organisms, and that protein, taurine, astaxanthin and zinc were lower on a dry weight basis in rotifers than in copepods. Other measured nutrients as DHA, all analysed vitamins, manganese, copper and selenium were similar or higher in the rotifers. When compared to the present knowledge on nutrient requirements, protein and taurine appeared to be the most likely limiting nutrients for growth in cod larvae fed rotifers and Artemia. Larvae fed rotifers/Artemia had a higher whole body lipid content than larvae fed copepods at the end of the experiment (stage 5) after the fish had been fed the same formulated diet for approximately 2 weeks.

Imazethapyr and imazapic, bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam: zooplankton and dissipation in subtropical rice paddy water

Herbicides are very effective at eliminating weed and are largely used in rice paddy around the world, playing a fundamental role in maximizing yield. Therefore, considering the flooded environment of rice paddies, it is necessary to understand the side effects on non-target species. Field experiment studies were carried out during two rice growing seasons in order to address how the commonly-used herbicides imazethapyr and imazapic, bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam, used at recommended dosage, affect water quality and the non-target zooplankton community using outdoor rice field microcosm set-up. The shortest (4.9 days) and longest (12.2 days) herbicide half-life mean, estimated of the dissipation rate (k) is shown for imazethapyr and bispyribac-sodium, respectively. Some water quality parameters (pH, conductivity, hardness, BOD5, boron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and chlorides) achieved slightly higher values at the herbicide treatment. Zooplankton community usually quickly recovered from the tested herbicide impact. Generally, herbicides led to an increase of cladocera, copepods and nauplius population, while rotifer population decreased, with recovery at the end of the experiment (88 days after herbicide treatment).

The process-dependent impacts of dimethoate on the feeding behavior of rotifer

Traditional toxicological studies usually depict the dose-effect relationship at the given exposure time while ignore how toxic effects vary during and after the exposure. In the present study, feeding depression of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus under the impact of dimethoate was evaluated not only in the exposure time but also in the post-exposure time. Both the filtration rates (F) and the ingestion rates (I) of the rotifers varied during the exposure period under any concentration of dimethoate. A three-stepwise stress was observed when the rotifers were exposed to 0.2 and 1.0 mg L(-1) of the pesticide respectively, whereas 1.8 mg L(-1) dimethoate caused only one-step stress on the rotifers during the whole period. In addition, although the feeding behaviors of the rotifers recovered after the exposure, two feeding rates both got even more depressed at 8h in the post-exposure time. The latent inhibition after exposure was related to the exposure concentrations and the exposure time. Our works indicated that the impact of dimethoate on the feeding behavior of the rotifers was highly process-dependent that caused the stepwise stress during the exposure period and the latent stress after the exposure.

Acute and chronic toxicity of six anticancer drugs on rotifers and crustaceans

The growing use of cytostatic drugs is gaining relevance as an environmental concern. Environmental and distribution studies are increasing due to the development of accurate analytical methods, whereas ecotoxicological studies are still lacking. The aim of the present study was to investigate the acute and chronic toxicity of six cytostatics (5-fluorouracil, capecitabine, cisplatin, doxorubicin, etoposide, and imatinib) belonging to five classes of Anatomical Therapeutic Classification (ATC) on primary consumers of the aquatic chain (Daphnia magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Brachionus calyciflorus, and Thamnocephalus platyurus). Acute ecotoxicological effects occurred at concentrations in the order of mgL(-)(1), higher than those predicted in the environment, and the most acutely toxic drugs among those tested were cisplatin and doxorubicin for most aquatic organisms. For chronic toxicity, cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil showed the highest toxic potential in all test organisms, inducing 50% reproduction inhibition in crustaceans at concentrations on the order of μgL(-)(1). Rotifers were less susceptible to these pharmaceuticals. On the basis of chronic results, the low effective concentrations suggest a potential environmental risk of cytostatics. Thus, this study could be an important starting point for establishing the real environmental impact of these substances.

Toxicity assessment of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) towards the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus

The effects of acute toxicity, 3-day population growth and morphological effects of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with carbon chain lengths of 2-6 on the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus were investigated. The results indicated that the 24-h median lethal concentration (LC50) values of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), perfluoropropionic acid (PFPrA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluopentanoic acid (PFPeA), and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) towards B. calyciflorus were 70, 80, 110, 130 and 140 mg L(-1), respectively. The acute effects of PFCAs decreased with the increase of carbon chain length. The parameters used to determine 3-day population growth on these compounds were the rate of population increase (r) and mictic ratio. With the increase of fluorinated carbon-chain length, the r values of TFA, PFPrA, PFBA, PFPeA and PFHxA decreased by 0.99%, 16.8%, 16.5%, 22.4% and 32.0%, respectively. Mictic ratios ranged from 0.707 to 0.953 for PFCAs with carbon chain lengths of 2-6. In addition, the mictic ratio, body size and egg size exposed to some PFCAs were higher than those of the controls. These results offer a useful method for the ecological risk assessment of these short chain PFCAs.

New scope on the relationship between rotifers and Biomphalaria alexandrina snails

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of rotifer internalization into snail tissue on the development of schistosomes.

METHODS

Susceptible laboratory-bred Biomphalaria alexandrina (B. alexandrina) snails were exposed to lab-maintained rotifers; Philodina spp., two weeks before and after being infected with Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) miracidia. The consequent histopathological impact on snail tissues and cercarial biology were investigated before and after emergence from snails.

RESULTS

Contamination of B. alexandrina snails with philodina, two weeks before miracidial exposure, was found to hinder the preliminary development of S. mansoni cercariae inside the snail tissues. Furthermore, when snails were contaminated with rotifers two weeks post miracidial exposure; growth of already established cercariae was found to be retarded. The consequent influence of internalized rotifers within the snail tissue was clearly reflected on cercarial emergence, activity and infectivity along the four weeks duration of shedding. In the present study, comparison of snail histopathological findings and altered cercarial biology observed between the experimental and control groups indicated that the rotifers may have affected the levels of snail's energy reservoirs, which eventually was found to have had an adverse impact on reproduction, growth and survival of the parasite within the snail host, coupled with its performance outside the snail.

CONCLUSIONS

In future biological control strategies of schistosomiasis, ritifers should be considered as a parasitic scourge of humanity.

Iodine nutrition and toxicity in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) larvae

Copepods as feed promote better growth and development in marine fish larvae than rotifers. However, unlike rotifers, copepods contain several minerals such as iodine (I), at potentially toxic levels. Iodine is an essential trace element and both under and over supply of I can inhibit the production of the I containing thyroid hormones. It is unknown whether marine fish larvae require copepod levels of I or if mechanisms are present that prevent I toxicity. In this study, larval Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were fed rotifers enriched to intermediate (26 mg I kg^-1 dry weight; MI group) or copepod (129 mg I kg^-1 DW; HI group) I levels and compared to cod larvae fed control rotifers (0.6 mg I kg^-1 DW). Larval I concentrations were increased by 3 (MI) and 7 (HI) fold compared to controls during the rotifer feeding period. No differences in growth were observed, but the HI diet increased thyroid follicle colloid to epithelium ratios, and affected the essential element concentrations of larvae compared to the other groups. The thyroid follicle morphology in the HI larvae is typical of colloid goitre, a condition resulting from excessive I intake, even though whole body I levels were below those found previously in copepod fed cod larvae. This is the first observation of dietary induced I toxicity in fish, and suggests I toxicity may be determined to a greater extent by bioavailability and nutrient interactions than by total body I concentrations in fish larvae. Rotifers with 0.6 mg I kg^-1 DW appeared sufficient to prevent gross signs of I deficiency in cod larvae reared with continuous water exchange, while modelling of cod larvae versus rotifer I levels suggests that optimum I levels in rotifers for cod larvae is 3.5 mg I kg^-1 DW.

Blowing in the wind: a field test of overland dispersal and colonization by aquatic invertebrates

Despite the importance of dispersal to ecology, accurate estimates of dispersal rates are often difficult to obtain, especially for organisms that rely on passive dispersal of propagules to colonize new sites. To investigate potential dispersal vectors and relative colonization rates of zooplankton, we conducted a field experiment in which we restricted potential dispersal vectors (insects, birds, amphibians) from transporting zooplankton to mesocosms. Twenty-six non-insect invertebrate taxa invaded our array during 2 years. Colonization rates of organisms varied considerably, with some species appearing several weeks after the experiment began and others appearing after a year. We observed no difference in colonization rates among treatments, suggesting that species were transported to our experiment primarily by wind or rain, rather than by animal vectors. The absence of an additional 13 zooplankton species common in ponds immediately adjacent to the array either occurred because of dispersal limitation or an inability to invade the existing communities. Ecologists generally assume that all zooplankton are rapidly dispersed hence the potential for dispersal limitation is generally ignored. Our results suggest that zooplankton vary in their dispersal and colonization ability. Hence, increased attention should be focused on the potential role of dispersal limitation and its importance for understanding the structure and function of aquatic communities.
