Efficacy and safety of Piwei Peiyuan Prescription in the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis: A multicenter, double-blind, double-simulated, randomized, controlled clinical trial

The incidence of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is on the rise due to the growing pressure in modern social life, increasing bad living habits and emotional disorders (such as anxiety and depression), and the aging of the population. Of note, digestive system diseases are the dominant diseases in the field of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy and safety of Piwei Peiyuan Prescription, a TCM prescription, in the treatment of CAG through a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled design. This research was organized by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of TCM and simultaneously performed in 6 centers. A total of 120 CAG patients were included and randomized into 2 groups: group A (treatment with Piwei Peiyuan granules plus Weifuchun Simulant) and Group B (treatment with Weifuchun Tablets plus Piwei Peiyuan Simulant). These 2 groups were compared in terms of gastroscopy scores, TCM syndrome scores, and serological indicators at baseline and within 12 weeks after treatment. According to endoscopic biopsy for pathological observation, atrophy (2.56 ± 1.08 vs 3.00 ± 1.00, P = .028) and intestinal epithelial hyperplasia (1.00 ± 1.43 vs 1.69 ± 1.80, P = .043) scores were lower in group A than in group B. For the more, group A had higher effective rates for inflammation, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia (IM) in various regions of the stomach, especially for atrophy/IM of the gastric angle (64%, P = .034) and atrophy/IM of the lesser curvature of gastric antrum (63%, P = .042) than group B. According to TCM syndrome scores, Piwei Peiyuan Prescription improved the scores of gastric distension (2.30 ± 1.13 vs 2.80 ± 0.99, P = .022), preference for warmth and pressure (1.44 ± 1.06 vs 1.36 ± 1.10, P = .041), and poor appetite and indigestion (0.78 ± 0.66 vs 1.32 ± 0.72, P = .018). GAS, MTL, and PGE2 expression was significantly elevated after treatment with Piwei Peiyuan Prescription (P < .001). Piwei Peiyuan Prescription is effective for CAG treatment with high safety.

Routine use of filtered air as endotamponade in the management of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

PURPOSE

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of filtered air as endotamponade in the management of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and complete drainage of subretinal fluid.

METHODS

For this retrospective study, we reviewed the medical charts of 273 patients (275 eyes) who consecutively underwent PPV, subretinal fluid drainage and filtered air tamponade to treat primary RRD between 2018 and 2022. As primary outcome we evaluated the anatomical success considered as retinal reattachment after single surgery. As secondary outcomes: final mean best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), complications, and mean intraocular pressure (IOP) trends.

RESULTS

The anatomical success was reached by 262 (95.6%) of cases. Mean BCDVA improved from 0.73 LogMAR at baseline, to 0.21 LogMAR at the end of follow-up. As complications we recorded: 5 cases of clinically relevant macular pucker, 1 full thickness macular hole, and 1 PFO bubble under the retina. The mean IOP remained on normal values during the overall follow-up period.

Emphysematous pyometra and emphysematous hepatitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in a diabetic dog

A 14-year-old intact female diabetic dog presented with seizures and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome. Radiographs revealed gas-filled tubular structures in the right and left caudal abdomen, raising concerns of emphysematous pyometra or small intestinal ileus. Ultrasonography played a pivotal role in confirming emphysematous pyometra, a technique previously documented only once in veterinary practice. This report also presents the first documented case of emphysematous pyometra in a diabetic dog attributed to Klebsiella pneumoniae and complicated by emphysematous hepatitis.

Depth sectioning using environmental and atomic-resolution STEM

(Scanning) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of samples in gas and liquid media are acquired with an environmental cell (EC) via silicon nitride membranes. The ratio of sample signal against the background is a significant factor for resolution. Depth-sectioning scanning TEM (STEM) is a promising technique that enhances the signal for a sample embedded in a matrix. It can increase the resolution to the atomic level, thereby enabling EC-STEM applications in important areas. This review introduces depth-sectioning STEM and its applications to high-resolution EC-STEM imaging of samples in gases and in liquids.

Acute Post-streptococcal Glomerulonephritis in a Pediatric Population: A Five-Year Retrospective Study

INTRODUCTION

Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is a kidney disease that occurs after infection with a certain strain of streptococcal bacteria. It has a high hospitalization rate, especially in developing countries. It is characterized by the sudden appearance of edema, hematuria, proteinuria, and hypertension. The objective of this retrospective descriptive study conducted at James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital in Olongapo, Zambales, Philippines, is to analyze the demographic distribution, clinical presentation, complication, and outcome of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) in a pediatric population.  Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was done in patients (below 18 years of age) admitted with the diagnosis of post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis during a five-year period in the pediatric ward of a tertiary hospital in the Philippines. All patients underwent detailed clinical history and examination and were closely monitored during treatment. The course of disease progression was closely monitored and recorded.

RESULTS

Seventy-seven children were treated for APSGN with a mean age of 7.8 years and with standard deviation of 3.85. Edema and gross hematuria were noted in 53 (68.8%) and 24 (31.1%) cases, respectively. Hypertension was present in 54 patients (70.1%). Among those 54 patients, 49 (63.6%) patients developed acute renal injury (based on normal creatinine for age), three cases (3.8%) had pleural effusion, and two patients (2.5%) developed hypertensive encephalopathy. All patients underwent KUB (kidneys, ureters, and bladder) ultrasound, among which 13 (16.88%) had diffuse parenchymal swelling which improved and eventually were discharged. Increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was noted in 60-65% of patients. Hypoalbuminemia and lower hemoglobin were also quite common. There was no mortality during treatment and hospital stay.

CONCLUSIONS

APSGN remains one of the most common causes of glomerulonephritis in the region. Edema, hypertension, and hematuria were the most common presenting features. Early identification and comprehensive monitoring and management are required to prevent morbidity and mortality. The prognosis is generally good if early treatment is done.

Machine learning based prediction of image quality in prostate MRI using rapid localizer images

Purpose

Diagnostic performance of prostate MRI depends on high-quality imaging. Prostate MRI quality is inversely proportional to the amount of rectal gas and distention. Early detection of poor-quality MRI may enable intervention to remove gas or exam rescheduling, saving time. We developed a machine learning based quality prediction of yet-to-be acquired MRI images solely based on MRI rapid localizer sequence, which can be acquired in a few seconds.

Approach

The dataset consists of 213 (147 for training and 64 for testing) prostate sagittal T2-weighted (T2W) MRI localizer images and rectal content, manually labeled by an expert radiologist. Each MRI localizer contains seven two-dimensional (2D) slices of the patient, accompanied by manual segmentations of rectum for each slice. Cascaded and end-to-end deep learning models were used to predict the quality of yet-to-be T2W, DWI, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) MRI images. Predictions were compared to quality scores determined by the experts using area under the receiver operator characteristic curve and intra-class correlation coefficient.

Results

In the test set of 64 patients, optimal versus suboptimal exams occurred in 95.3% (61/64) versus 4.7% (3/64) for T2W, 90.6% (58/64) versus 9.4% (6/64) for DWI, and 89.1% (57/64) versus 10.9% (7/64) for ADC. The best performing segmentation model was 2D U-Net with ResNet-34 encoder and ImageNet weights. The best performing classifier was the radiomics based classifier.

Conclusions

A radiomics based classifier applied to localizer images achieves accurate diagnosis of subsequent image quality for T2W, DWI, and ADC prostate MRI sequences.

Impact of Concentration Polarization Phenomena on Gas Separation Processes with High-Performance Zeolite Membranes: Experiments vs. Simulations

Polarization phenomena play a key role in membrane separation processes but remain largely unexplored for gas separations, where the mass transfer resistance is most often limited to the membrane. This assumption, which is commonly used today for the simulation of membrane gas separations, has to be reconsidered when high-performance materials, showing a very high permeance and/or selectivity, are used. In this study, a series of steady-state separation performances experimentally obtained on CO2/CH4 mixtures with a zeolite membrane are compared to the predictions of a dedicated 1D approach, recently derived and validated through CFD simulations. Polarization effects are shown to generate a significant negative impact on the separation performances, both in terms of the productivity and separation efficiency. The 1D model predictions, based on pure gas permeance data and without any adjustable parameters, are in very good agreement with the experimental data. This fast and efficient modeling approach can easily be implemented in simulation or process synthesis programs for the rigorous evaluation of membrane gas separation processes, when high-performance materials are used.

Assessing the Relative Importance of Satellite-Detected Methane Superemitters in Quantifying Total Emissions for Oil and Gas Production Areas in Algeria

Methane emissions from oil and gas production provide an important contribution to global warming. We investigate 2020 emissions from the largest gas field in Algeria, Hassi R'Mel, and the oil-production-dominated area Hassi Messaoud. We use methane data from the high-resolution (20 m) Sentinel-2 instruments to identify and estimate emission time series for 11 superemitters (including 10 unlit flares). We integrate this information in a transport model inversion that uses methane data from the coarser (7 km × 5.5 km) but higher-precision TROPOMI instrument to estimate emissions from both the 11 superemitters (>1 t/h individually) and the remaining diffuse area source (not detected as point sources with Sentinel-2). Compared to a bottom-up inventory for 2019 that is aligned with UNFCCC-reported emissions, we find that 2020 emissions in Hassi R'Mel (0.16 [0.11-0.22] Tg/yr) are lower by 53 [24-73]%, and emissions in Hassi Messaoud (0.22 [0.13-0.28] Tg/yr) are higher by 79 [4-188]%. Our analysis indicates that a larger fraction of Algeria's methane emissions (∼75%) come from oil production than national reporting suggests (5%). Although in both regions the diffuse area source constitutes the majority of emissions, relatively few satellite-detected superemitters provide a significant contribution (24 [12-40]% in Hassi R'Mel; 49 [27-71]% in Hassi Messaoud), indicating that mitigation efforts should address both. Our synergistic use of Sentinel-2 and TROPOMI can produce a unique and detailed emission characterization of oil and gas production areas.

Microvascular changes after pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair: A comparative study based on gas tamponade agent

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of gas tamponade on microvascular changes in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

METHODS

Participants in this study were 48 patients with RRD, who were treated with PPV and gas tamponade without internal limiting membrane peeling. All participants underwent slit-lamp examination, fundoscopy, spectral domain-optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography at month 6 postoperatively. The fellow untreated eyes were also examined and served as the control data.

RESULTS

A statistically significant enlargement in the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) in both the superficial (p = 0.002) and the deep capillary plexus (p = 0.01) was noticed 6 months postoperatively in patients with RRD treated with PPV compared to the fellow eyes. The foveal avascular zone perimeter was increased in the operated eyes in the deep capillary plexus (p = 0.0003) and the foveal avascular zone circularity was decreased in both the superficial (p = 0.045) and the deep capillary plexus (p < 0.001) compared to the fellow eyes. The vessel density was not significantly different between the operated and the fellow eyes in the superficial and the deep capillary plexus. The vessel density and the foveal avascular zone parameters were comparable between the C3F8 and SF6 groups.

CONCLUSION

Specific microvascular indices as measured by OCTA were statistically different between the operated and the fellow eyes in the superficial and deep capillary plexus. C3F8 and SF6 as gas tamponades did not seem to differ in their impact on the microvascular parameters.

Stability of Nanometer-Thick Layered Gallium Chalcogenides and Improvements via Hydrogen Passivation

The gallium monochalcogenides family, comprising gallium sulfide (GaS), gallium selenide (GaSe), and gallium telluride (GaTe), is capturing attention for its applications in energy storage and production, catalysis, photonics, and optoelectronics. This interest originates from their properties, which include an optical bandgap larger than those of most common transition metal dichalcogenides, efficient light absorption, and significant carrier mobility. For any application, stability to air exposure is a fundamental requirement. Here, we perform a comparative study of the stability of layered GaS, GaSe, and GaTe nanometer-thick films down to a few layers with the goal of identifying the most suitable Ga chalcogenide for future integration in photonic and optoelectronic devices. Our study unveils a trend of decreasing air stability from sulfide to selenide and finally to telluride. Furthermore, we demonstrate a hydrogen passivation process to prevent the oxidation of GaSe with a higher feasibility and durability than other state-of-the-art passivation methods proposed in the literature.

Exploring the Potential Applications of Engineered Borophene in Nanobiosensing and Theranostics

A monolayer of boron known as borophene has emerged as a novel and fascinating two-dimensional (2D) material with exceptional features, such as anisotropic metallic behavior and supple mechanical and optical capabilities. The engineering of smart functionalized opto-electric 2D materials is essential to obtain biosensors or biodevices of desired performance. Borophene is one of the most emerging 2D materials, and owing to its excellent electroactive surface area, high electron transport, anisotropic behavior, controllable optical and electrochemical properties, ability to be deposited on thin films, and potential to create surface functionalities, it has recently become one of the sophisticated platforms. Despite the difficulty of production, borophene may be immobilized utilizing chemistries, be functionalized on a flexible substrate, and be controlled over electro-optical properties to create a highly sensitive biosensor system that could be used for point-of-care diagnostics. Its electrochemical properties can be tailored by using appropriate nanomaterials, redox mediators, conducting polymers, etc., which will be quite useful for the detection of biomolecules at even trace levels with a high sensitivity and less detection time. This will be quite helpful in developing biosensing devices with a very high sensitivity and with less response time. So, this review will be a crucial foundation as we have discussed the basic properties, synthesis, and potential applications of borophene in nanobiosensing, as well as therapeutic applications.

Low Temperature Nitriding of Metal Alloys for Surface Mechanical Performance

Metallic alloys are, by essence, ductile and stiff and can support loads without sudden rupture. This ductility becomes a disadvantage when applications require wear resistance. In this case, the hardening of the surface is required while retaining a core performance. Here, nitriding at low temperatures has proven to be beneficial and has potential. In fact, any phase transitions or unwanted compound precipitations that occur at higher temperatures have to be avoided as they would have a deleterious effect on the chemical homogeneity and mechanical properties. The present contribution summarizes the achievements made with such treatments on metallic alloys. We considered the most popular treatments, namely plasma, implantation, and gas nitridings.

Municipal Sewage Sludge as a Source for Obtaining Efficient Biosorbents: Analysis of Pyrolysis Products and Adsorption Tests

In the 21st century, the development of industry and population growth have significantly increased the amount of sewage sludge produced. It is a by-product of wastewater treatment, which requires appropriate management due to biological and chemical hazards, as well as several legal regulations. The pyrolysis of sewage sludge to biochar can become an effective way to neutralise and use waste. Tests were carried out to determine the effect of pyrolysis conditions, such as time and temperature, on the properties and composition of the products obtained and the sorption capacity of the generated biochar. Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) showed that the main components of the produced gas phase were CO₂, CO, CH₄ and to a lesser extent volatile organic compounds. In tar, compounds of mainly anthropogenic origin were identified using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The efficiency of obtaining biochars ranged from 44% to 50%. An increase in the pyrolysis temperature resulted in a decreased amount of biochar produced while improving its physicochemical properties. The biochar obtained at high temperatures showed the good adsorption capacity of Cu²⁺ (26 mg·g^-1) and Zn²⁺ (21 mg·g^-1) cations, which indicates that it can compete with similar sorbents. Adsorption of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ proceeded according to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The biosorbent obtained from sewage sludge can be successfully used for the separation of metal cations from water and technological wastewater or be the basis for producing modified and mixed carbon sorbents.

The effects of Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 on functional gas and bloating in adults: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

BACKGROUND

Gut microbiome dysbiosis is a major cause of abdominal gas, bloating, and distension. Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 (LactoSpore) is a spore-forming, thermostable, lactic acid-producing probiotic that has numerous health benefits. We evaluated the effect of Lacto Spore on improving the clinical symptoms of functional gas and bloating in healthy adults.

METHODS

Multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study at hospitals in southern India. Seventy adults with functional gas and bloating with a gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) indigestion score ≥ 5 were randomized to receive B coagulans MTCC 5856 (2 billion spores/day, N = 35) or placebo (N = 35) for 4 weeks. Changes in the GSRS-Indigestion subscale score for gas and bloating and global evaluation of patient's scores from screening to the final visit were the primary outcomes. The secondary outcomes were Bristol stool analysis, brain fog questionnaire, changes in other GSRS subscales, and safety.

RESULTS

Two participants from each group withdrew from the study and 66 participants (n = 33 in each group) completed the study. The GSRS indigestion scores changed significantly (P < .001) in the probiotic group (8.91-3.06; P < .001) compared to the placebo (9.42-8.43; P = .11). The median global evaluation of patient's scores was significantly better (P < .001) in the probiotic group (3.0-9.0) than in the placebo group (3.0-4.0) at the end of the study. The cumulative GSRS score, excluding the indigestion subscale, decreased from 27.82 to 4.42% (P < .001) in the probiotic group and 29.12 to 19.33% (P < .001) in the placebo group. The Bristol stool type improved to normal in both the groups. No adverse events or significant changes were observed in clinical parameters throughout the trial period.

CONCLUSIONS

Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 may be a potential supplement to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in adults with abdominal gas and distension.

Effects of several flavonoids on human gut microbiota and its metabolism by in vitro simulated fermentation

Introduction

Flavonoids have antiviral, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and other biological activities. They have high market value and are widely used in food and medicine fields. They also can regulate gut microbiota and promote human health. However, only a few flavonoids have been reported for their regulatory effects on human gut microbiota.

Methods

The effects of hesperidin, hesperetin-7-O-glucoside, hesperetin, naringin, prunin, naringenin, rutin, isoquercitrin, and quercetin on gut microbiota structural and metabolic differences in healthy subjects were studied by means of in vitro simulated fermentation technology.

Results

Results showed that the nine kinds of flavonoids mentioned above, especially hesperetin-7-O-glucoside, prunin, and isoquercitrin, were found to have more effect on the structure of human gut microbiota, and they could significantly enhance Bifidobacterium (p < 0.05). After 24 h of in vitro simulated fermentation, the relative abundance of intestinal probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus) was increased by the three flavonoids and rutin. Furthermore, the relative abundance of potential pathogenic bacteria was decreased by the addition of hesperetin-7-O-glucoside, naringin, prunin, rutin, and isoquercitrin (e.g., Lachnoclostridium and Bilophila). Notably, prunin could also markedly decrease the content of H₂S, NH₃, and short-chain fatty acids. This performance fully demonstrated its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.

Discussion

This study demonstrates that flavonoids can regulate the imbalance of gut microbiota, and some differences in the regulatory effect are observed due to different structures. This work provides a theoretical basis for the wide application of flavonoids for food and medicine.

Strain Sensor-Inserted Microchannel for Gas Viscosity Measurement

Quantifying the viscosity of a gas is of great importance in determining its properties and can even be used to identify what the gas is. While many techniques exist for measuring the viscosities of gases, it is still challenging to probe gases with a simple, robust setup that will be useful for practical applications. We introduce a facile approach to estimating gas viscosity using a strain gauge inserted in a straight microchannel with a height smaller than that of the gauge. Using a constrained geometry for the strain gauge, in which part of the gauge deforms the channel to generate initial gauge strain that can be transduced into pressure, the pressure change induced via fluid flow was measured. The change was found to linearly correlate with fluid viscosity, allowing estimation of the viscosities of gases with a simple device.

A rare gas-containing lumbar synovial cyst treated by percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic cystectomy: A case report and literature review

Spinal synovial cysts are rare entities for which standard surgical strategies are inconsistent. Here, we present an uncommon intraspinal gas-containing synovial cyst treated by percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic cystectomy. A 52-year-old man presented with radicular pain and intermittent claudication that had persisted for one month. Computed tomography revealed an intraspinal cystic lesion anteromedial to the left L4-L5 articular joint and the center of the lesion manifested gas contents. A transforaminal endoscopic procedure was performed and confirmed as a safe and minimally invasive technique for gas-containing lumbar synovial cysts. It provides a valuable substitution and supplementation to open surgery.

H2-induced transient upregulation of phospholipids with suppression of energy metabolism

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying its biological effects are largely unknown. Similar to other gaseous molecules such as inhalation anesthetics, H₂ is more soluble in lipids than in water. A recent study demonstrated that H₂ reduces radical polymerization-induced cellular damage by suppressing fatty acid peroxidation and membrane permeability. Thus, we sought to examine the effects of short exposure to H₂ on lipid composition and associated physiological changes in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. We analyzed cells by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry to define changes in lipid components. Lipid class analysis of cells exposed to H₂ for 1 hour revealed transient increases in glycerophospholipids including phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, and cardiolipin. Metabolomic analysis also showed that H₂ exposure for 1 hour transiently suppressed overall energy metabolism accompanied by a decrease in glutathione. We further observed alterations to endosomal morphology by staining with specific antibodies. Endosomal transport of cholera toxin B to recycling endosomes localized around the Golgi body was delayed in H₂-exposed cells. We speculate that H₂-induced modification of lipid composition depresses energy production and endosomal transport concomitant with enhancement of oxidative stress, which transiently stimulates stress response pathways to protect cells.

Population Attributable Fraction of Gas Stoves and Childhood Asthma in the United States

Indoor gas stove use for cooking is associated with an increased risk of current asthma among children and is prevalent in 35% of households in the United States (US). The population-level implications of gas cooking are largely unrecognized. We quantified the population attributable fraction (PAF) for gas stove use and current childhood asthma in the US. Effect sizes previously reported by meta-analyses for current asthma (Odds Ratio = 1.34, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.12−1.57) were utilized in the PAF estimations. The proportion of children (<18 years old) exposed to gas stoves was obtained from the American Housing Survey for the US, and states with available data (n = 9). We found that 12.7% (95% CI = 6.3−19.3%) of current childhood asthma in the US is attributable to gas stove use. The proportion of childhood asthma that could be theoretically prevented if gas stove use was not present (e.g., state-specific PAFs) varied by state (Illinois = 21.1%; California = 20.1%; New York = 18.8%; Massachusetts = 15.4%; Pennsylvania = 13.5%). Our results quantify the US public health burden attributed to gas stove use and childhood asthma. Further research is needed to quantify the burden experienced at the county levels, as well as the impacts of implementing mitigation strategies through intervention studies.

Recent Advances in Sensors for Fire Detection

Fire is indeed one of the major contributing factors to fatalities, property damage, and economic disruption. A large number of fire incidents across the world cause devastation beyond measure and description every year. To minimalize their impacts, the implementation of innovative and effective fire early warning technologies is essential. Despite the fact that research publications on fire detection technology have addressed the issue to some extent, fire detection technology still confronts hurdles in decreasing false alerts, improving sensitivity and dynamic responsibility, and providing protection for costly and complicated installations. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current futuristic practices in the context of fire detection and monitoring strategies, with an emphasis on the methods of detecting fire through the continuous monitoring of variables, such as temperature, flame, gaseous content, and smoke, along with their respective benefits and drawbacks, measuring standards, and parameter measurement spans. Current research directions and challenges related to the technology of fire detection and future perspectives on fabricating advanced fire sensors are also provided. We hope such a review can provide inspiration for fire sensor research dedicated to the development of advanced fire detection techniques.

Covalent Organic Frameworks for Chemical and Biological Sensing

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous organic polymers with polygonal porosity and highly ordered structures. The most prominent feature of the COFs is their excellent crystallinity and highly ordered modifiable one-dimensional pores. Since the first report of them in 2005, COFs with various structures were successfully synthesized and their applications in a wide range of fields including gas storage, pollution removal, catalysis, and optoelectronics explored. In the meantime, COFs also exhibited good performance in chemical and biological sensing, because their highly ordered modifiable pores allowed the selective adsorption of the analytes, and the interaction between the analytes and the COFs’ skeletons may lead to a detectable change in the optical or electrical properties of the COFs. In this review, we firstly demonstrate the basic principles of COFs-based chemical and biological sensing, then briefly summarize the applications of COFs in sensing some substances of practical value, including some gases, ions, organic compounds, and biomolecules. Finally, we discuss the trends and the challenges of COFs-based chemical and biological sensing.

Randomised controlled trial on the effect of simethicone bowel preparation on rectal variability during image-guided radiation therapy for prostate cancer (SPoRT study)

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study was to assess whether simethicone reduces the rectal volume (RV) and gas volume (GV), to increase treatment accuracy and to decrease toxicity of prostate radiation therapy.

METHODS

30 patients were randomised to simethicone or no intervention. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were performed on Days 1-3 and weekly until completion of radiation. RV and GV were measured using volume delineation. Toxicity data were collected.

RESULTS

264 CBCTs were analysed. RV and GV were not significantly different in the simethicone group compared with the control group at each time point (P >0.05) after adjusting for Week 0 values as a covariate. The simethicone group showed an average reduction in RV and GV of 10% and 21%, respectively, compared with the control group (P >0.05). Standard deviations were calculated over 10 time points, which were grouped to represent the first 2-3 weeks of radiation therapy versus subsequent weeks. These were not significantly different between the simethicone and control group. However, there was a statistically significant decrease in the variability of RV at time points 6-10 compared with time points 1-5 within the simethicone group (P = 0.012), but no significant difference was found between these grouped time points in the control group (P = 0.581). The toxicity questionnaires showed no significant difference between the groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Simethicone did not decrease the RV or GV overall. However, simethicone appeared to significantly decrease the RV variability from Week three onwards. This suggests that taking simethicone two to three weeks before starting radiation therapy may reduce RV variability, although a larger study is needed to confirm this.

Comprehensive characterization of firing byproducts generated from small arms firing of lead-free frangible ammunition

Following the introduction of lead-free frangible ammunition in United States Air Force small arms firing ranges, Combat Arms instructors have routinely reported experiencing adverse health symptoms during live fire training exercises, including sore throat, cough, and headache. Previous studies have found that these symptoms occur despite occupational exposure limits not being exceeded. To better characterize the potential source and mechanisms for health symptoms, a comprehensive characterization of the physicochemical properties of gases and aerosols emitted during the firing of the M9 pistol and M4 rifle using lead-free frangible ammunition was completed. Weapons were fired within a sealed chamber using a remote firing mechanism. A suite of direct-reading instruments and collection-based analytical methods were used to determine the composition of the emissions. Emissions were dominated by carbon monoxide and ultrafine particles. Other prevalent gases included carbon dioxide, ammonia, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, and nitric oxide when measured using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An electrical, low-pressure impactor showed that, on average, the count median diameter immediately after firing was 36 ± 4 nm (n = 10 rounds) and 32 ± 3 nm (n = 14 rounds) for the M9 pistol and M4 rifle, respectively. Analytical methods were used to determine that emitted particles were primarily composed of soot, copper, and potassium, with trace amounts of calcium, silicon, sodium, sulfur, and zinc. Results from this research confirm prior work and expand upon the characterization of emissions generated from firing lead-free frangible ammunition. By employing multiple methods to measure and analyze data we were able to quantify both total and respirable particle fractions and determine particle morphology and composition. Characterization of the emissions provides insight into potential exposure risks that may lead to the development of adverse health symptoms allowing for the development of strategies for risk mitigation.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Pulmonary Conditions among Farmers and Ranchers in the Central United States

This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for work-related respiratory conditions (asthma, farmer's lung, sinusitis, rhinitis, and environmental allergies, diagnosed by a physician) among farm and ranch operators in the central US. A survey was conducted by the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) in 2018, focusing on work-related injuries, illnesses, exposures, and preventive measures in a seven-state region (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota). Farms and ranches (n = 16,818) with an email address and annual sales exceeding $5,000 were randomly selected for the survey. Agricultural production and weather data were merged with survey responses. The relationship between exposures and respiratory conditions was analyzed using generalized estimating equations. We received responses from 3,268 agricultural operations (19% response rate) containing information on 4,064 individual operators. The life-time prevalence of (any) respiratory conditions among farm/ranch operators was 18%. Risk factors for respiratory conditions included exposures to grain/hay/feed dust (OR 2.41), animal confinement dust (OR 1.57), field/road dust (OR 2.11), manure/silage gasses (OR 1.66), anhydrous ammonia (OR 1.51), fuels/solvents/paints (OR 1.92), older age group >70 vs. <43 (OR 1.40), female gender (OR 1.82), and being primary vs. third operator (OR 1.61). Farmers and ranchers have a high prevalence of respiratory conditions associated with dust and gas exposures at work. More effective protective measures are needed using the hierarchy of controls, including improved use of respiratory protection.

[Gas in superior mesenteric artery and celiac axis as a rare CT-sign of extensive bowel necrosis]

The authors report endovascular treatment of acute thromboembolic occlusion of superior mesenteric artery in a 75-year-old patient whose postoperative period was complicated by massive reperfusion and translocation syndrome. Contrast-enhanced CT in 12 hours after successful thrombectomy from superior mesenteric artery revealed CT signs of irreversible bowel lesion, i.e. gas in hepatic veins, intestinal wall and mesenteric veins, bowel wall thinning. In addition, CT revealed extremely rare sign of severe acute mesenteric ischemia (gas in superior mesenteric artery and celiac axis). We found no description of gas in celiac axis following acute mesenteric ischemia in available literature.

High-resolution impedance manometry characterizes the functional role of distal colonic motility in gas transit

BACKGROUND

The colonic motor patterns associated with gas transit are poorly understood. This study describes the application of high-resolution impedance manometry (HRiM) in the human colon in vivo to characterize distal colonic motility and gas transit; (a) after a meal and (b) after intraluminal gas insufflation into the sigmoid colon.

METHODS

HRiM recordings were performed in 19 healthy volunteers, with sensors positioned from the distal descending colon to the proximal rectum. Protocol 1 (n = 10) compared pressure and impedance prior to and after a meal. Protocol 2 (n = 9) compared pressure and impedance before and after gas insufflation into the sigmoid colon (60 mL total volume).

KEY RESULTS

Both the meal and gas insufflation resulted in an increase in the prevalence of the 2-8/minute "cyclic motor pattern" (meal: (t(9) = -6.42, P<0.001); gas insufflation (t(8) = -3.13, P = 0.01)), and an increase in the number of antegrade and retrograde propagating impedance events (meal: Z = -2.80, P = 0.005; gas insufflation Z = -2.67, P = 0.008). Propagating impedance events temporally preceded antegrade and retrograde propagating contractions, representing a column of luminal gas being displaced ahead of a propagating contraction. Three participants reported an urge to pass flatus and/or flatus during the studies.

CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES

Initiation of the 2-8/minute cyclic motor pattern in the distal colon occurs both following a meal and/or as a localized sensorimotor response to gas. The near-absence of a flatal urge and the temporal association between propagating contractions and gas transit supports the hypothesis that the 2-8/minute cyclic motor pattern acts as a physiological "brake" modulating rectal filling.

Color change after tooth bleaching with ozone and 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide for in-office use

There is a constant search for bleaching treatments that can offer greater safety with fewer adverse effects, especially in the techniques performed in the office, which usually employ hydrogen peroxide in high concentrations (35% to 40%) that are not recommended by some international control agencies. This in vitro study evaluated the color change after tooth bleaching with the use of ozone and a 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide bleaching treatment for in-office use. Thirty molars were allocated (n = 10): three applications of ozone (1 hour every 3 days); three applications of 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide (1 hour every 3 days); 10% carbamide peroxide agent (8 hours a day for 7 days). The teeth were mounted on a plaster model to simulate the dental arch, and trays made of silicone were used for the application of the bleaching agents and to allow ozone to enter through. The ozone concentration used was 60 μg/mL, with an oxygen flow of 0.25 L/min. The values of color change showed no significant differences among treatments. The variations in the parameters over time, as well as the values of ΔE_ab, ΔE₀₀, and WI_D, showed that there was no significant difference among the three treatments. The use of ozone and 10% ozonized carbamide peroxide for in-office use was effective for tooth bleaching with clinically perceptible and acceptable color alterations. The study was approved on September 10, 2019 by the São Leopoldo Mandic Ethics Research Committee (CAAE No. 17711719.4.0000.5374).

Associations Between the Density of Oil and Gas Infrastructure and the Incidence, Stage and Outcomes of Solid Tumours: A Population-Based Geographic Analysis

Background

We hypothesized that there are geographic areas of increased cancer incidence in Alberta, and that these are associated with high densities of oil and gas(O+G) infrastructure. Our objective was to describe the relationship between O+G infrastructure and incidence of solid tumours on a population level.

Methods

We analyzed all patients >=18 years old with urological, breast, upper GI, colorectal, head and neck, hepatobiliary, lung, melanoma, and prostate cancers identified from the Alberta Cancer Registry from 2004-2016. Locations of active and orphan O+G sites were obtained from the Alberta Energy Regulator and Orphan Well Association. Orphan sites have no entity responsible for their maintenance. ArcGIS (ESRI, Toronto, Ontario) was used to calculate the distribution of O+G sites in each census distribution area (DA). Patient residence at diagnosis was defined by postal code. Incidence of cancer per DA was calculated and standardized. Negative binomial regression was done on O+G site density as a categorical variable with cutoffs of 1 and 30 wells/100km², compared to areas with 0 sites.

Results

125,316 patients were identified in the study timeframe;58,243 (46.5%) were female, mean age 65.6 years. Breast (22%) and prostate (19.8%) cancers were most common. Mortality was 36.5% after a median of 30 months follow up (IQR 8.4 - 68.4). For categorical density of active O+G sites, RR was 1.02 for 1-30 sites/100km² (95% CI=0.95-1.11) and 1.15 for >30 sites/100km2 (p<0.0001, 95%CI=1.11-1.2). For orphan sites, 1-30 sites RR was 1.25 (p<0.0001, 95%CI=1.16-1.36) and 1.01 (p=0.97, 95%CI=0.7-1.45) for >30 sites. For all O+G sites, RR for 1-30 sites was 1.03 (p=0.4328, 95%CI=0.95-1.11) and 1.15 (p<0.0001, 95%CI=1.11-1.2) for >30 sites.

Conclusion

We report a statistically significant correlation between O+G infrastructure density and solid tumour incidence in Alberta. To our knowledge this is the first population-level study to observe that active and orphan O+G sites are associated with increased risk of solid tumours. This finding may inform policy on remediation and cancer prevention.

Dominance of Fossil Fuels in Japan's National Energy Mix and Implications for Environmental Sustainability

Despite the drive for increased environmental protection and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), coal, oil, and natural gas use continues to dominate Japan’s energy mix. In light of this issue, this research assessed the position of natural gas, oil, and coal energy use in Japan’s environmental mitigation efforts from the perspective of sustainable development with respect to economic growth between 1965 and 2019. In this regard, the study employs Bayer and Hanck cointegration, fully modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS), and dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) to investigate these interconnections. The empirical findings from this study revealed that the utilization of natural gas, oil, and coal energy reduces the sustainability of the environment with oil consumption having the most significant impact. Furthermore, the study validates the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in Japan. The outcomes of the Gradual shift causality showed that CO₂ emissions can predict economic growth, while oil, coal, and energy consumption can predict CO₂ emissions in Japan. Given Japan’s ongoing energy crisis, this innovative analysis provides valuable policy insights to stakeholders and authorities in the nation’s energy sector.

Simulation of gas sensing with a triboelectric nanogenerator

Safety concerns require the frequently check for leaks in gas pipelines. Also, in coal mines the type gases permeating from the ground need to be monitored. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can be applied for gas sensing without external power supply. In this paper, a two-dimensional model of a TENG was established, and a gas jet a rectangular cross section was added between two triboelectric materials. The TENG could generate distinguishable electrical signals according to the different types of gas and the different gas injection areas. This work contributes to the area of self-powered gas sensing.

Functionalization and Characterization of Silicon Nanowires for Sensing Applications: A Review

Silicon nanowires are attractive materials from the point of view of their electrical properties or high surface-to-volume ratio, which makes them interesting for sensing applications. However, they can achieve a better performance by adjusting their surface properties with organic/inorganic compounds. This review gives an overview of the main techniques used to modify silicon nanowire surfaces as well as characterization techniques. A comparison was performed with the functionalization method developed, and some applications of modified silicon nanowires and their advantages on those non-modified are subsequently presented. In the final words, the future opportunities of functionalized silicon nanowires for chipless tag radio frequency identification (RFID) have been depicted.

Transcriptional Profiling of STAT1 Gain-of-Function Reveals Common and Mutation-Specific Fingerprints

STAT1 gain-of-function (GOF) is a primary immunodeficiency typically characterized by chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC), recurrent respiratory infections, and autoimmunity. Less commonly, also immunodysregulation polyendocrinopathy enteropathy X-linked (IPEX)-like syndromes with CMC, and combined immunodeficiency without CMC have been described. Recently, our group and others have shown that different mutation-specific mechanisms underlie STAT1 GOF in vitro, including faster nuclear accumulation (R274W), and reduced mobility (R321, N574I) to near immobility in the nucleus (T419R) upon IFNγ stimulation. In this work, we evaluated the transcriptomic fingerprint of the aforementioned STAT1 GOF mutants (R274W, R321S, T419R, and N574I) relative to STAT1 wild-type upon IFNγ stimulation in an otherwise isogenic cell model. The majority of genes up-regulated in wild-type STAT1 cells were significantly more up-regulated in cells expressing GOF mutants, except for T419R. In addition to the common interferon regulated genes (IRG), STAT1 GOF mutants up-regulated an additional set of genes, that were in part shared with other GOF mutants or mutation-specific. Overall, R274W and R321S transcriptomes clustered with STAT1 WT, while T419R and N574I had a more distinct fingerprint. We observed reduced frequency of canonical IFNγ activation site (GAS) sequences in promoters of genes up-regulated by all the STAT1 GOF mutants, suggesting loss of DNA binding specificity for the canonical GAS consensus. Interestingly, the T419R mutation, expected to directly increase the affinity for DNA, showed the most pronounced effects on the transcriptome. T419R STAT1 dysregulated more non-IRG than the other GOF mutants and fewer GAS or degenerate GAS promotor sequences could be found in the promoter regions of these genes. In conclusion, our work confirms hyperactivation of common sets of IFNγ-induced genes in STAT1 GOF with additional dysregulation of mutation-specific genes, in line with the earlier observed mutation-specific mechanisms. Binding to more degenerate GAS sequences is proposed as a mechanism toward transcriptional dysregulation in R274W, R321S, and N574I. For T419R, an increased interaction with the DNA is suggested to result in a broader and less GAS-specific response. Our work indicates that multiple routes leading to STAT1 GOF are associated with common and private transcriptomic fingerprints, which may contribute to the phenotypic variation observed in vivo.

Increased Fecal Calprotectin Is Associated with Worse Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Quality of Life Scores in Children with Cystic Fibrosis

In cystic fibrosis (CF), cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) dysfunction leads to digestive disorders that promote intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis enhancing gastrointestinal symptoms. In pancreatic insufficiency CF patients, both intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis, are associated with an increase in the fecal calprotectin (FC) level. However, associations between the FC level, gastrointestinal symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) remain poorly studied. We aimed to assess such associations in pancreatic insufficiency CF children. The FC level was measured in pancreatic insufficiency CF children’s stool samples. Children and their parents completed two questionnaires: The Gastrointestinal Symptoms Scales 3.0-PedsQL^TM and the Quality of Life Pediatric Inventory 4.0-PedsQL^TM. Lower scores indicated worse symptomatology or QoL. Thirty-seven CF children were included. A FC level above 250 µg/g was associated with worse gastrointestinal symptoms and QoL scores. The FC level was inversely correlated with several gastrointestinal scores assessed by children (i.e., Total, “Heart Burn Reflux”, “Nausea and Vomiting”, and “Gas and Bloating”). Several QoL scores were correlated with gastrointestinal scores. The FC level was weakly associated with clinical parameters. Some gastrointestinal and QoL scores were related to disease severity associated parameters. In CF, the FC level, biomarker previously related to intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis, was associated with worse digestive symptoms and QoL scores.

Identification of Genetic Variants via Bacterial Respiration Gas Analysis

Indole is a signal molecule derived from the conversion of tryptophan, and it is present in bacterial respiratory gas. Besides influencing bacterial growth, indole exhibits effects on human health, including a positive effect on inflammation and protection against pathogens. However, a high fecal indole concentration (FIC) can suggest an unbalanced gut flora or the presence of certain pathogens. To analyze the indole produced by bacteria, its collection and detection is required. Traditional methods usually require centrifugation of liquid bacterial culture medium and subsequent extraction of indole from the medium or partial purification of indole from fecal samples (e.g., by distillation or extraction). In this study, we demonstrate the possibility of identifying gas contents directly from bacteria, and we distinguish the difference in species and their genetics without the need to centrifuge or extract. Using an absorbent sheet placed above a liquid culture, we were able to collect gas content directly from bacteria. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for the analysis. The GC-MS results showed a clear peak attributed to indole for wild-type Escherichia coli cells (MG1655 and MC4100 strains), whereas the indole peak was absent in the chromatograms of cells where proteins, part of the indole production pathway from tryptophan (TnaA and TnaB), were not expressed (by using tnaAB-deleted cells). The indole observed was measured to be present in a low nmol-range. This method can distinguish whether the bacterial genome contains the tnaAB gene or not and can be used to collect gas compounds from bacterial cultures quickly and easily. This method is useful for other goals and future research, such as for measurements in restrooms, for food-handling facilities, and for various applications in medical settings.

Evaluation of tea tree oil physicochemical features and its antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium acnes (Propionibacterium acnes) ATCC 6919

Introducción.

El aceite del árbol de té es un aceite esencial reconocido por sus propiedades antimicrobianas.

Objetivos.

Evaluar la composición, características y efecto antimicrobiano del aceite al 2 % del árbol de té y su concentración inhibitoria mínima (CIM) contra Cutibacterium acnes (Propionibacterium acnes).

Materiales y métodos.

Se evaluó el quimiotipo en tres lotes diferentes de este aceite mediante cromatografía de gases, así como su actividad antimicrobiana en concentración al 2 % v/v y la CIM contra C. acnes mediante ensayo de difusión en agar (guía M11-A8 CLSI).

Resultados.

Los lotes evaluados presentaron los quimiotipos ajustados a la norma ISO 4730, lo que indicó la alta calidad del producto. Los lotes contenían de 30 a 40 % de terpinen-4-ol, compuesto que favorece la actividad antimicrobiana, la cual presentó en todos los lotes un efecto dependiente de la concentración contra C. acnes, con una inhibición del crecimiento microbiano en concentración al 2 % v/v en todas las pruebas. La concentración inhibitoria mínima fue de 0,25 % v/v. La actividad antimicrobiana del aceite del árbol de té contra este microorganismo ya ha sido reportada con una concentración inhibitoria mínima entre 0,05 y 1,25 % v/v, rango que cobija la obtenida en este estudio.

Conclusiones.

Los resultados evidenciaron la gran calidad de este producto y su capacidad como agente antibacteriano contra C. acnes. Se deben hacer estudios con otros aislamientos del microorganismo provenientes de pacientes con acné vulgar para confirmar su actividad general y la de cada uno de sus componentes.

[Emphysematous pyelonephritis: case of successful conservative treatment]

Emphysematous pyelonephritis is rare form of pyelonephritis, which has mortality of nearly 80%. Conservative treatment can be successful in less than 30% of cases. Currently, in the guidelines there is no standard approach to conservative and surgical treatment of this entity. The clinical observation of successful conservative treatment of a patient with emphysematous pyelonephritis, associated with decompensated diabetes mellitus, from the diagnosis to recovery without performing nephrectomy in order to preserve kidney function, is described in the article.

Responses of Pigs to Stunning with Nitrogen Filled High-Expansion Foam

Nitrogen gas (N2) delivered in high expansion foam in a closed container could be a feasible method for humanely stunning pigs. This study aimed to evaluate potential aversion in pigs to the N2 foam method and its effect on stun quality. Furthermore, the study aimed to assess potential aversion to the foam itself. Sixty pigs (27.8 ± 4.4 kg) were divided into three treatments and were exposed to either N2-filled foam, air-filled foam, or no foam air. The N2 foam was effective at purging the air from the container and quickly created stable anoxic conditions. The pigs did not show any strong aversive behaviours when exposed to foam. However, they seemed to avoid putting their heads and snouts into the foam when foam levels became high. Escape attempts through the lid also increased when the foam started covering their heads. The mean time to loss of posture was 57.9 s. Based on the results, stunning with the N2 foam technique could be a viable alternative to high concentration CO2 stunning and potentially lead to improved animal welfare at slaughter.

Clinical Presentations and Outcomes of Industrial Chlorine Gas Exposure Incidence in Oman

OBJECTIVE

The main objective was to study different clinical presentations and outcomes of patients after acute industrial chlorine gas exposure in Oman with evaluation of overall incident management to help develop a chemical exposure incident protocol.

METHODS

This was a retrospective observational study of 15 patients exposed to chlorine gas after an accidental chlorine gas leak in a metal melting factory in Oman.

RESULTS

Six (40%) patients were admitted and nine (60%) patients were discharged from the emergency department (ED) after initial management. The important post-chlorine gas exposure clinical symptoms were eye irritation (66.6%), cough (73.3%), shortness of breath (40.0%), chest discomfort (66.6%), rhinorrhea (66.6%), dizziness (40.0%), vomiting (46.6%), sore throat (13.3%), and stridor (53.3%). Important signs included tachycardia (40.0%), tachypnea (40.0%), wheeze (20.0%), and use of accessory muscles for breathing (20.0%). Signs and symptoms of eye irritation, rhinorrhea, tachycardia, tachypnea, wheeze, and use of accessory muscles for breathing have shown significant correlation with outcome (admission) having P value of <.05.

CONCLUSION

In the presented acute chlorine gas exposure incidence, 15 exposed persons were brought to the ED, out of which six were admitted and nine were discharged after symptomatic treatment. Signs and symptoms of eye irritation, rhinorrhea, tachycardia, tachypnea, wheeze, and use of accessory muscles of breathing show significant relation with the outcome of admission.

Liquid Metal Based Flexible and Implantable Biosensors

Biosensors are the core elements for obtaining significant physiological information from living organisms. To better sense life information, flexible biosensors and implantable sensors that are highly compatible with organisms are favored by researchers. Moreover, materials for preparing a new generation of flexible sensors have also received attention. Liquid metal is a liquid-state metallic material with a low melting point at or around room temperature. Owing to its high electrical conductivity, low toxicity, and superior fluidity, liquid metal is emerging as a highly desirable candidate in biosensors. This paper is dedicated to reviewing state-of-the-art applications in biosensors that are expounded from seven aspects, including pressure sensor, strain sensor, gas sensor, temperature sensor, electrical sensor, optical sensor, and multifunctional sensor, respectively. The fundamental scientific and technological challenges lying behind these recommendations are outlined. Finally, the perspective of liquid metal-based biosensors is present, which stimulates the upcoming design of biosensors.

ZnO Metal Oxide Semiconductor in Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors: A Review

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensors are of continuous development interest to researchers due to their sensitivity, short detection time, and reliability. Among the most used materials to achieve the sensitive film of SAW sensors are metal oxide semiconductors, which are highlighted by thermal and chemical stability, by the presence on their surface of free electrons and also by the possibility of being used in different morphologies. For different types of gases, certain metal oxide semiconductors are used, and ZnO is an important representative for this category of materials in the field of sensors. Having a great potential for the development of SAW sensors, the discussion related to the development of the sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductors, especially ZnO, by the synthesis method or by obtaining new materials, is suitable and necessary to have an overview of the latest results in this domain.

Laryngeal Mid-Cord Erythroleukoplakias: How to Modulate the Transoral CO2 Laser Excisional Biopsy

Background: The endoscopic appearance of glottic erythroleukoplakias is non-predictive of their histopathology, potentially ranging from keratosis to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The aim of this study was to assess a comprehensive workup for the one-step diagnosis and treatment of mid-cord erythroleukoplakias, using CO₂ laser excisional biopsy. Methods: We evaluated 147 untreated patients affected by 155 mid-cord erythroleukoplakias submitted to excisional biopsy by subepithelial (Type I) or subligamental cordectomy (Type II), across two academic institutions. Patients were evaluated by preoperative videolaryngostroboscopy, pre- and intraoperative videoendoscopy with biologic endoscopy (narrow band imaging, NBI, or the Storz professional image enhancement system, SPIES), either with or without intraoperative saline infusion into the Reinke’s space. Adequacy of treatment was the primary outcome. Results: The histopathologic diagnosis was keratosis in 26 (17%) cases, squamous intraepithelial neoplasia (SIN1-2) in 47 (30%), carcinoma in situ in 21 (14%), and SCC in 61 (39%) patients. The adequacy of treatment across the entire cohort was 89%. The intraoperative saline infusion procedure, facing not clearly suspicious lesions, raised the adequacy of treatment from 60% to 90% (p = 0.006). Conclusions: Excisional biopsy by Type I–II cordectomies, after a comprehensive diagnostic workup, should be accepted as an adequate and cost-effective treatment of unilateral mid-cord glottic erythroleukoplakias.

An Ultrasensitive Fluorescent Paper-Based CO2 Sensor

We demonstrate a versatile and easily fabricated paper-based CO₂ sensor. The sensor consists of a specially designed fluorescent color-shift chromophore infused into standard filter paper. The emission color of the resulting fluorescent paper changes upon exposure to CO₂ due to the formation of carbonic acid, which underlies the sensing mechanism. By using a ratiometric method, the undesirable effects of photobleaching can be eliminated, leading to a stable and repeatable sensor performance. These multiuse sensors have a response time on the order of 1 min and feature low detection limits for a paper-based CO₂ gas sensor, suggesting possible low-cost applications in smart buildings or other facilities in which CO₂ levels are required to be continuously monitored.

Galacto-Oligosaccharide RP-G28 Improves Multiple Clinical Outcomes in Lactose-Intolerant Patients

Background and Aims: Lactose intolerance (LI) is a global problem affecting more than half of the world’s population. An ultra-purified, high-concentration galacto-oligosaccharide, RP-G28, is being developed as a treatment for patients with LI. The efficacy and safety of RP-G28 in reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance were assessed in a blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Methods: In this multiclinical site, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, 377 patients with LI were randomized to one of two doses of orally administered RP-G28 or placebo for 30 days. A LI test and symptom assessment were performed at baseline and on day 31. The primary endpoint was a ≥4-point reduction or a score of zero on LI composite score on day 31. Voluntary milk and dairy intake and global outcome measures assessed patients’ overall treatment satisfaction and quality of life before therapy and 30 days after therapy. This study received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. Results: For the primary endpoint, 40% in the RP-G28 groups reported a ≥4-point reduction or no symptoms on LI symptom composite score compared to 26% with placebo (p = 0.016). Treatment with RP-G28 also led to significantly higher levels of milk and dairy intake and significant improvements in global assessments compared to placebo. RP-G28 but not placebo led to significant increases in five Bifidobacterium taxa. Conclusions: RP-G28 for 30 days significantly reduced symptoms and altered the fecal microbiome in patients with LI. Treatment with RP-G28 also improved milk/dairy consumption and quality of life and was safe and well tolerated.

Vertebral column deformity with curved cross-stitch vertebrae in Norwegian seawater-farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L

Pathological changes in the vertebral column of farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway have been reported since the 1990s. Based on the characteristic radiographic findings, we here present a vertebral column deformity named "curved cross-stitch vertebrae" that mainly affects the middle aspect of the vertebral column. Sixty fish, from the west/northwest coast of mid-Norway, were sampled at slaughter and examined by radiography, computed tomography (CT), necropsy, macrophotography, and histology. The vertebral deformities were radiographically graded as mild, moderate, or marked. The main differences between these grades of changes were defined by increased curving of the peripheries of endplates, reduced intervertebral spaces, and vertical displacement of the vertebrae. The curved rims of endplates were located peripheral to a continuous and approximately circular borderline. The CT studies revealed small, multifocal, hypo-attenuating, round to crescent-shaped areas in the notochord, compatible with the presence of gas. Additionally, histology revealed that the axial parts of endplates had circular zones with perforations, through which either notochordal tissue prolapsed into the vertebrae or vascularized fibrochondroid proliferations extended from the vertebrae into the notochord. Inflammation was present in many vertebral bodies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of gas in the notochord of fish.

Effect of a heat and moisture exchanger on temperature and humidity of inhaled gas in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effects of a heat and moisture exchanger (HME) on the temperature and humidity of inhaled gas in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs.

STUDY DESIGN

Prospective, interventional study.

ANIMALS

A total of four experimental dogs and four client-owned dogs weighing 13.9 ± 7.4 kg (mean ± standard deviation).

METHODS

The four experimental dogs were anesthetized on two occasions with and without an intact HME at least 1 week apart. The four client-owned dogs were anesthetized once only for a surgical procedure and assigned to the HME group or no-HME group in alternate order, resulting in six dogs for each group. All dogs were premedicated, anesthetized with propofol and intubated. The HME was connected to the endotracheal tube. Anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane. A digital thermo-hygrometer was placed between the endotracheal tube and HME. The temperature and relative humidity of the inhaled gas were measured every 5 minutes for 60 minutes and the absolute humidity was calculated at each time point.

RESULTS

The temperature and absolute humidity of the inhaled gas was significantly higher at 5-60 minutes after intubation in the HME group than in the no-HME group. Absolute humidity was maintained above 29 mg H₂O L^-1 in the HME group. No significant time-dependent effects on temperature, relative humidity or absolute humidity of the inhaled gas were observed.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The temperature and absolute humidity of the inhaled gas were higher when an HME was used during isoflurane anesthesia in dogs. The use of an HME may reduce the risk of dehydration and dysfunction of the airway mucosal epithelium.

Non-Contact, Non-Destructive Testing in Various Industrial Sectors with Terahertz Technology

In this article, we survey various non-contact, non-destructive testing methods by way of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging designed for use in various industrial sectors. A brief overview of the working principles of THz spectroscopy and imaging is provided, followed by a survey of selected applications from three industries—the building and construction industry, the energy and power industry, and the manufacturing industry. Material characterization, thickness measurement, and defect/corrosion assessment are demonstrated through the examples presented. The article concludes with a discussion of novel spectroscopy and imaging devices and techniques that are expected to accelerate industry adoption of THz systems.

Effects of Mannan Oligosaccharides on Gas Emission, Protein and Energy Utilization, and Fasting Metabolism in Sheep

Simple Summary

Mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) are a promising feed additive to improve animal health, immune capacity, and antioxidation. Based on the previous studies, we carried out three experiments to investigate the effects of MOS on the gas emission, protein and energy utilization, and fasting metabolism of sheep. The results showed that 2.0% MOS supplementation led to the lowest in vitro CO₂ production and lower CH₄ production and decreased in vivo intake. However, it also decreased urine nitrogen excretion and energy released as CH₄, and then improved the utilization of crude protein and energy of sheep. There were no differences in the parameters of respiration and energy metabolism of sheep under the fasting condition. The findings indicated that MOS slightly affected the gas emission and nutrients and energy utilization of sheep.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) on in vitro and in vivo gas emission, utilization of crude protein (CP) and energy, and relative parameters of sheep under fasting metabolism conditions. In vitro gas productions were evaluated over 12 h in sheep diets containing different amounts of MOS (from 0% to 6.0%/kg, the increment was 0.5%). A control experiment was used to assess the gas emission, utilization of CP and energy, and fasting metabolism in control sheep and sheep treated with 2.0% MOS over 24 days (d). The results showed that 2.0% MOS supplementation led to the lowest in vitro CO₂ production and less CH₄ production, while also leading to decrease in vivo nutrients intake, CP and energy excretion, digested and retained CP, and energy released as CH₄ (p < 0.05). Furthermore, 2.0% MOS supplementation appeared to decrease in vivo O₂ consumption and CH₄ production per metabolic body weight (BW^0.75), and increase the CP retention rate of sheep (p < 0.074). MOS did not affect other parameters, along with the same parameters of sheep under fasting metabolism conditions (p > 0.05). The findings indicate MOS has only slight effects on the gas emission and nutrients and energy metabolism of sheep.

Ultrasonographic differentiation between portal venous and parenchymal gas may be important for the prognosis of canine and feline hepatic emphysema: 37 cases

The aim of this retrospective, cross-sectional, study was to evaluate clinical findings and outcomes for different ultrasonographic patterns of hepatic emphysema in dogs and cats. Dogs and cats with an ultrasonographic diagnosis of hepatic emphysema and a known outcome, from January 2010 to January 2018, were enrolled. The following data were recorded from medical and ultrasonographic records: ultrasonographic patterns of hepatic emphysema (parenchymal, portal venous, biliary), clinical signs, laboratory findings, and outcomes (favorable, poor). A total of 33 dogs and four cats met the inclusion criteria. Among these, 23 cases were classified as hepatic portal venous gas, 10 as parenchymal emphysema, and four as biliary emphysema. Clinical diagnosis categories were as follows: infection/sepsis (9), gastro-intestinal disease (9), iatrogenic (9), trauma (5), and liver neoplasia (5). An increase in serum liver enzymes was significantly associated with parenchymal emphysema (P = .03). Other clinical and laboratory findings were not associated with the type of hepatic emphysema. Hepatic portal venous gas was mostly transient in patients with ultrasonographic follow-up. The overall mortality was 40.5%. A significant difference was found between mortality by portal venous gas (21.7%) and mortality by parenchymal emphysema (90%) (P = .003). In conclusion, the ultrasonographic differentiation of hepatic emphysema between hepatic portal venous gas and parenchymal emphysema may be important for the prognosis of hepatic emphysema. The presence of parenchymal emphysema may be a poor prognostic indicator, while hepatic portal venous gas may be more benign. However, ultrasound findings should be carefully evaluated in the context of clinical findings.

Medium Preparation for the Cultivation of Microorganisms under Strictly Anaerobic/Anoxic Conditions

In contrast to aerobic organisms, strictly anaerobic microorganisms require the absence of oxygen and usually a low redox potential to initiate growth. As oxygen is ubiquitous in air, retaining O2-free conditions during all steps of cultivation is challenging but a prerequisite for anaerobic culturing. The protocol presented here demonstrates the successful cultivation of an anaerobic mixed culture derived from a biogas plant using a simple and inexpensive method. A precise description of the entire anoxic culturing process is given including media preparation, filling of cultivation flasks, supplementation with redox indicator and reducing agents to provide low redox potentials as well as exchanging the headspace to keep media free from oxygen. Furthermore, a detailed overview of aseptically inoculating gas tight serum flasks (by using sterile syringes and needles) and suitable incubation conditions is provided. The present protocol further deals with gas and liquid sampling for subsequent analyses regarding gas composition and volatile fatty acid concentrations using gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively, and the calculation of biogas and methane yield considering the ideal gas law.

Emphysematous cystitis: review of current literature, diagnosis and management challenges

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a rare disease in human as well as in veterinary medicine; in both it is defined as an uncommon form of complicated urinary tract infection (UTI), characterized by the presence of gas within the bladder wall and lumen. While female dogs are at increased risk of developing an UTI, patients with EC are not subject to gender or age predisposition and may present with variable clinical manifestations. Diabetes mellitus (DM) appears as the most common risk factor for the development of EC, but many other underlying conditions have been mentioned in literature and should be taken into consideration. In case of EC, Escherichia coli appears to be the most common pathogen isolated from urine cultures. A conclusive diagnosis of EC requires necessarily the recourse to imaging methods, such as abdominal radiography and ultrasonography. An early diagnosis and appropriate medical therapy, consisting in protracted antibiotic treatment associated with control over underlying diseases, could lead to avoid surgical intervention.
