Sweeteners Show a Plasticizing Effect on PVP K30-A Solution for the Hot-Melt Extrusion of Fixed-Dose Amorphous Curcumin-Hesperetin Solid Dispersions

The co-administration of curcumin and hesperetin might be beneficial in terms of neuroprotective activity; therefore, in this study, we attempted to develop a fixed-dose formulation comprising these two compounds in an amorphous state. The aim of obtaining an amorphous state was to overcome the limitations of the low solubility of the active compounds. First, we assessed the possibility of using popular sweeteners (erythritol, xylitol, and sorbitol) as plasticizers to reduce the glass transition temperature of PVP K30 to prepare the polymer-excipient blends, which allowed the preparation of amorphous solid dispersions via hot-melt extrusion at a temperature below the original glass transition of PVP K30. Erythritol proved to be the superior plasticizer. Then, we focused on the development of fixed-dose amorphous solid dispersions of curcumin and hesperetin. Powder X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis confirmed the amorphous character of dispersions, whereas infrared spectroscopy helped to assess the presence of intermolecular interactions. The amorphous state of the produced dispersions was maintained for 6 months, as shown in a stability study. Pharmaceutical parameters such as dissolution rate, solubility, and in vitro permeability through artificial membranes were evaluated. The best improvement in these features was noted for the dispersion, which contained 15% of the total content of the active compounds with erythritol used as the plasticizer.

Understanding the Interaction of Thermal, Rheological, and Mechanical Parameters Critical for the Processability of Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Systems during Hot Melt Extrusion

Hot melt extrusion (HME) is a common manufacturing process used in the pharmaceutical industry to improve the solubility of poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). The goal is to create an amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) where the amorphous form of the API is stabilized within a polymer matrix. Traditionally, the development of pharmaceutically approved polymers has focused on requirements such as thermal properties, solubility, drug-polymer interactions, and biocompatibility. The mechanical properties of the material have often been neglected in the design of new polymers. However, new downstream methods require more flexible polymers or suitable plasticizer polymer combinations. In this study, two grades of the polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is already established for HME, are investigated in terms of their mechanical, rheological, and thermal properties. The mechanical properties of the extruded filaments were tested by the three-point bending test. The rheological behavior was analyzed by oscillating plate measurements. Thermal analysis was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, the solid and liquid plasticizers mannitol, sorbitol, triacetin, triethyl citrate, polyethylene glycol, and glycerol were evaluated for use with PVA and their impact on the polymer properties was elaborated. Finally, the effects of the plasticizers are compared to each other, and the correlations are analyzed statistically using principal component analysis (PCA). Thereby, a clear ranking of the plasticizer effects was established, and a deeper understanding of the polymer-plasticizer interactions was created.

Near-Room-Temperature Detection of Aromatic Compounds with Inkjet-Printed Plasticized Polymer Composites

Chemiresistive gas sensors composed of a thermoplastic polymer matrix and conductive fillers offer various advantages for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including low power consumption due to near-room-temperature operation, high sensitivity, and inherent selectivity toward VOCs. However, such sensors have a slow response time as the polymer matrix often has a glass transition temperature (Tg) higher than the sensor operating temperature slowing the analyte diffusion to/from the polymer. A plasticizer lowers polymer Tg to match the sensor operation temperature, reducing its response time. In this study, the effect of a plasticizer diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DEGDB) on the sensing properties of polystyrene (PS)-carbon black (CB) composite is investigated to obtain sensors with a fast response time and high sensitivity to VOCs. The sensors are fabricated via drop-on-demand inkjet printing, providing a high degree of control over the sensory film morphology and reproducibility. A design-of-experiment (DoE) approach is adopted to find the optimum ink and print parameters with a minimum number of experiments. As a result, sensors with 30 times faster response time and 25 times higher effective sensitivity are obtained while operating near room temperature (27 °C). Furthermore, the sensors show high sensitivity toward aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, benzene, and ethylbenzene), with a sub-10 ppm limit of detection (LoD) and a negligible sensitivity toward humidity. Our results show the potential of PS-DEGDB-CB composite as a selective and cost-effective sensory material compatible with large-scale manufacturing techniques for selective near-room-temperature detection of toxic VOCs.

Effect of Oligomer Addition on Tube Dilation in Polymer Nanocomposite Melts

This study investigates the effect of adding oligomers on the rheological properties of polymer nanocomposite melts with the goal of enhancing the processability of nanocomposites. The scaling analysis of plateau modulus (GN ) is used in understanding the complex mechanical behavior of entangled poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) melts upon oligomer addition. Increasing the oligomer amount led to a decrease in GN and an apparent degree of entanglement (Z) in the neat polymer melt. The particle dispersion states at two particle loadings with oligomer addition are examined in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The dilution exponent is found unchanged at 7 and 17 vol% particle loadings for the well-dispersed PMA-SiO2 nanocomposites compared to the neat PMA solution. These findings suggest that attractive particles with strong interfacial layers do not influence the tube dilution scaling of the polymer with the oligomer. To the contrary, composites with weak polymer-particle interfaces demonstrate phase separation of particles when oligomers are introduced and its exponent for tube dilution scaling reaches 4 at a particle loading of 17 vol%, potentially indicating that network-forming clusters influence chain entanglements in this scenario.

Biochemical responses and antioxidant defense mechanisms in Channa Striatus exposed to Bisphenol S

Bisphenol S (BPS), a BPA analog and a safer alternative, is utilized in a diverse range of industrial applications, such as making polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, thermal receipt papers, and currency bills. Recently, the increased use of BPS in containers and packages for daily life has been interrogated due to its identical chemical structure and probable endocrine-disrupting actions as BPA has. The present study aimed to evaluate the alterations in biochemical indices and antioxidant enzymes as certain indicators of the endocrine-disrupting effect of BPS in Channa striatus, a freshwater fish. BPS-exposed fish species were subjected to three sub-lethal concentrations of BPS (1, 4, and 12 ppm) and observed after an interval of 7 and 21 days. Exposure to BPS caused a reduction in the level of protein in muscle, gonads and the liver due to an impairment of protein synthesis. Levels of cholesterol in the muscle, gonads, and liver of BPS-exposed fish were found to be decreased after treatment, indicating either an inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver or reduced absorption of dietary cholesterol. The levels of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase showed remarkable increases, while the activity of glutathione S-transferase decreased considerably, indicating the antioxidant defense mechanism to counteract the oxidative stress induced by BPS. Moreover, a significant increase was noted in the level of lipid peroxidation products, like malondialdehyde and conjugate diene, which represent biomarkers of oxidative stress. The histoarchitecture changes were also observed in the liver, muscle and gonads of BPS-treated fish species. The present study showed that sub-lethal exposure to BPS significantly influenced the activities of these enzymes and peroxidation byproducts. From this study, it is concluded that BPS-caused toxic effects in fish species lead to an imbalance in the antioxidant defense system. It is clearly indicated that BPS toxicity could lead to susceptible oxidative stress in various tissues and could damage vital organs.

Ionic Liquids as Designed, Multi-Functional Plasticizers for Biodegradable Polymeric Materials: A Mini-Review

Measures to endorse the adoption of eco-friendly biodegradable plastics as a response to the scale of plastic pollution has created a demand for innovative products from materials from Nature. Ionic liquids (ILs) have the ability to disrupt the hydrogen bonding network of biopolymers, increase the mobility of biopolymer chains, reduce friction, and produce materials with various morphologies and mechanical properties. Due to these qualities, ILs are considered ideal for plasticizing biopolymers, enabling them to meet a wide range of specifications for biopolymeric materials. This mini-review discusses the effect of different IL-plasticizers on the processing, tensile strength, and elasticity of materials made from various biopolymers (e.g., starch, chitosan, alginate, cellulose), and specifically covers IL-plasticized packaging materials and materials for biomedical and electrochemical applications. Furthermore, challenges (cost, scale, and eco-friendliness) and future research directions in IL-based plasticizers for biopolymers are discussed.

Synthesis and Properties of a Novel Levulinic Acid-Based Environmental Auxiliary Plasticizer for Poly(vinyl chloride)

Herein, a bio-based plasticizer ketalized tung oil butyl levulinate (KTBL) was developed using methyl eleostearate, a derivative of tung oil, and butyl levulinate. KTBL can be used as an auxiliary plasticizer to partially replace traditional plasticizer. The plasticizer has a ketone structure, an ester base, and a long linear chain. It was mixed with dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and the effect of the plasticizer KTBL as an auxiliary plasticizer on the plasticization of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was studied. Their compatibility and plasticizing effect were evaluated using dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis (DMA), mechanical property analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results demonstrate that when the KTBL to DOP ratio is 1:1, the blended sample with KTBL exhibits superior mechanical performance compared to pure DOP, resulting in an increased elongation at break from 377.47% to 410.92%. Moreover, with the increase in KTBL content, the durability is also significantly improved. These findings suggest that KTBL can serve as an effective auxiliary plasticizer for PVC, thereby reducing the reliance on DOP.

Optimizing the Ion Conductivity and Mechanical Stability of Polymer Electrolyte Membranes Designed for Use in Lithium Ion Batteries: Combining Imidazolium-Containing Poly(ionic liquids) and Poly(propylene carbonate)

State-of-the-art Li batteries suffer from serious safety hazards caused by the reactivity of lithium and the flammable nature of liquid electrolytes. This work develops highly efficient solid-state electrolytes consisting of imidazolium-containing polyionic liquids (PILs) and lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). By employing PIL/LiTFSI electrolyte membranes blended with poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), we addressed the problem of combining ionic conductivity and mechanical properties in one material. It was found that PPC acts as a mechanically reinforcing component that does not reduce but even enhances the ionic conductivity. While pure PILs are liquids, the tricomponent PPC/PIL/LiTFSI blends are rubber-like materials with a Young's modulus in the range of 100 MPa. The high mechanical strength of the material enables fabrication of mechanically robust free-standing membranes. The tricomponent PPC/PIL/LiTFSI membranes have an ionic conductivity of 10-6 S·cm-1 at room temperature, exhibiting conductivity that is two orders of magnitude greater than bicomponent PPC/LiTFSI membranes. At 60 °C, the conductivity of PPC/PIL/LiTFSI membranes increases to 10-5 S·cm-1 and further increases to 10-3 S·cm-1 in the presence of plasticizers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal good electrochemical stability of the tricomponent PIL/PPC/LiTFSI membrane that potentially ranges from 0 to 4.5 V vs. Li/Li+. The mechanically reinforced membranes developed in this work are promising electrolytes for potential applications in solid-state batteries.

A Comprehensive Study on the Effect of Plasticizers on the Characteristics of Polymer Inclusion Membranes (PIMs): Exploring Butyl Stearate as a Promising Alternative

This study investigated the influence of various plasticizers commonly used in the manufacture of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs), such as 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE), phthalates, adipates, and sebacates on the mechanical, thermal, and transport properties of membranes. Additionally, butyl stearate (BTS), chosen for its non-toxic nature compared to phthalates and its cost-effectiveness relative to adipates and sebacates, was evaluated as a plasticizer in PIMs for the first time. All plasticizers were incorporated in PIMs made of either cellulose triacetate (CTA) or poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as the base polymers and the task-specific ionic liquid trioctylmethylammonium thiosalicylate (TOMATS) as the carrier. The plasticizers were found to significantly affect the characteristics of membrane hydrophilicity, mechanical flexibility, and thermal stability. Transport experiments using Hg(II) as a model target ion revealed that, for CTA-based PIMs, the plasticizer did not significantly affect transport efficiency. However, for PVC-based PIMs, BTS exhibited better efficiency when compared to NPOE. These findings highlight the potential of BTS as an attractive alternative to currently used plasticizers in PVC-based PIM formulations.

Plasticizer-Induced Enhancement of Mesoscale Dissymmetry in Thin Films of Chiral Polymers with Variable Chain Length

Conjugated polymers with chiral side chains are of interest in areas including chiral photonics, optoelectronics, and chemical and biological sensing. However, the low dissymmetry factors of most neat polymer thin films have limited their practical application. Here, a robust method to increase the absorption dissymmetry factor in a poly-fluorene-thiophene (PF8TS series) system is demonstrated by varying molecular weight and introducing an achiral plasticizer, polyethylene mono alcohol (PEM-OH). Extending chain length within the optimal range and adding this long-chain alcohol significantly enhance the chiroptical properties of spin-coated and annealed thin films. Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry (MMSE) analysis shows good agreement with the steady-state transmission measurements confirming a strong chiral response (circular dichroism (CD) and circular birefringence (CB)), ruling out linear dichroism, birefringence, and specific reflection effects. Solid-state NMR studies of annealed hybrid chiral polymer systems show enhancement of signals associated with aromatic π-stacked backbone and the ordered side-chain conformations. Further studies using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and polarized optical microscopy (POM) indicate that PEM-OH facilitates mesoscopic crystal domain ordering upon annealing. This provides new insights into routes for tuning optical activity in conjugated polymers.

Cementless Compositions for the Restoration of White Stone Based on Lime Binder and Silicon Dioxide

The condition of architectural monuments is directly influenced by various factors, such as anthropogenic, natural, and technological, leading to the degradation of both structures and construction materials, ultimately resulting in irreversible damage. These factors diminish the quality of construction materials, contributing to alterations and the destruction of the appearance and structure of white stone. The primary objective of this research is to develop cement-free compositions for restoring ancient masonry materials. Tests were conducted at the BM Department of VlSU using modern equipment. New material compositions for restoration have been devised, combining lime and silicon dioxide with chemical additives to enhance adhesive and strength properties. Adhesive strength increases by 1.5 times with the addition of white soot (silicon dioxide). Moreover, the incorporation of silicon dioxide positively impacts compressive strength (from 10.6 to 15.6 MPa), surpassing the strength of composites without white soot by 1.5 times. XRD confirms the developed composite's similar phase composition to white stone, supported by optical microscopy and SEM results. Restoration composites based on these compositions exhibit homogeneous structures compatible with white stone and demonstrate high adhesion levels. These results make the proposed compositions promising for white stone restoration, ensuring structural and chemical compatibility with the restored surface.

Improvement of the Ductility of Environmentally Friendly Poly(lactide) Composites with Posidonia oceanica Wastes Plasticized with an Ester of Cinnamic Acid

New composite materials were developed with poly(lactide) (PLA) and Posidonia oceanica fibers through reactive extrusion in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and subsequent injection molding. The effect of different amounts of methyl trans-cinnamate (MTC) on the mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical, and wettability properties was studied. The results showed that the presence of Posidonia oceanica fibers generated disruptions in the PLA matrix, causing a decrease in the tensile mechanical properties and causing an impact on the strength due to the stress concentration phenomenon. Reactive extrusion with DCP improved the PO/PLA interaction, diminishing the gap between the fibers and the surrounding matrix, as corroborated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). It was observed that 20 phr (parts by weight of the MTC, per one hundred parts by weight of the PO/PLA composite) led to a noticeable plasticizing effect, significantly increasing the elongation at break from 7.1% of neat PLA to 31.1%, which means an improvement of 338%. A considerable decrease in the glass transition temperature, from 61.1 °C of neat PLA to 41.6 °C, was also observed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed a loss of thermal stability of the plasticized composites, mainly due to the volatility of the cinnamate ester, leading to a decrease in the onset degradation temperature above 10 phr MTC.

Statistically Optimized Polymeric Buccal Films of Eletriptan Hydrobromide and Itopride Hydrochloride: An In Vivo Pharmacokinetic Study

A migraine is a condition of severe headaches, causing a disturbance in the daily life of the patient. The current studies were designed to develop immediate-release polymeric buccal films of Eletriptan Hydrobromide (EHBR) and Itopride Hydrochloride (ITHC) to improve their bioavailability and, hence, improve compliance with the patients of migraines and its associated symptoms. The prepared films were evaluated for various in vitro parameters, including surface morphology, mechanical strength, disintegration test (DT), total dissolving time (TDT), drug release and drug permeation, etc., and in vivo pharmacokinetic parameters, such as area under curve (AUC), mean residence time (MRT), half-life (t1/2), time to reach maximum concentration (Tmax), and time to reach maximum concentration (Cmax). The outcomes have indicated the successful preparation of the films, as SEM has confirmed the smooth surface and uniform distribution of drugs throughout the polymer matrix. The films were found to be mechanically stable as indicated by folding endurance studies. Furthermore, the optimized formulations showed a DT of 13 ± 1 s and TDT of 42.6 ± 0.75 s, indicating prompt disintegration as well as the dissolution of the films. Albino rabbits were used for in vivo pharmacokinetics, and the outcomes were evident of improved pharmacokinetics. The drug was found to rapidly permeate across the buccal mucosa, leading to increased bioavailability of the drug: Cmax of 130 and 119 ng/mL of ITHC and EHBR, respectively, as compared to 96 (ITHC) and 90 ng/mL (EHBR) of oral solution. The conclusion can be drawn that possible reasons for the enhanced bioavailability could be the increased surface area in the form of buccal films, its rapid disintegration, and faster dissolution, which led toward the rapid absorption of the drug into the blood stream.

Research progress on the interference effects of plasticizers on maternal behavior and its potential mechanisms

Environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), known as environmental hormones, are exogenous chemicals that can disrupt hormone levels and cause dysfunction of the secretory system in humans and animals. Plasticizers, which are widely used EDCs, are commonly used to enhance the flexibility of plastic products. As plastics age and wear, however, they can leach into the environment and enter the bodies of animals through various pathways such as the digestive tract and skin. They can lead to estrogen-like effects and have substantial reproductive toxicity. Residual plasticizer concentrations in the environment are typically low. Unlike high doses that induce acute damage to the reproductive system, low doses of plasticizers do not cause macroscopic harm and thus its reproductive toxicity is often overlooked for extended periods. An increasing number of studies conducted on humans and mice in recent years have demonstrated that low doses of plasticizers can induce reproductive toxicity by interfering with maternal behavior. Prenatal exposure to plasticizers can result in abnormal postnatal maternal behavior. Female offspring also exhibit significantly low maternal care, lactation, and other behaviors in adulthood, which may persist for multiple generations, significantly disrupting the animal breeding process and impacting the health and well-being of newborn pups. The underlying mechanisms have not been systematically summarized. The risk of continuous exposure to low-dose plasticizers in humans and animals has increased due to the extensive utilization of plastic and rubber products in modern production and lifestyle patterns. It is thus crucial to conduct a systematic review on the effects of low-dose plasticizers on maternal behavior. We reviewed the research progress on the disruptive effects of plasticizers on animals' maternal behavior and concluded that these effects are primarily caused by inducing oxidative stress damage and DNA methylation reprogramming in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, as well as disrupting the balance of the thyroid system and causing intestinal microbial disorders. It would offer a novel perspective for future studies about the influence of plasticizers and other environmental hormones on maternal behavior in domesticated animals.

Investigation of Cinnamic Acid Derivatives as Alternative Plasticizers for Improved Ductility of Polyvinyl Chloride Films

This study investigates the viability of cinnamic acid derivatives as alternative plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films by addressing concerns about conventional phthalate-based options that pose health and environmental risks. By theoretical modeling, this research evaluates the compatibility between various cinnamic acid-based plasticizers and the PVC matrix, which suggests their potential effectiveness. Additionally, the incorporation of these plasticizers notably enhances the tensile properties of PVC films, particularly in terms of ductility and elongation at break by surpassing the neat PVC. Moreover, cinnamic acid-based plasticizers induce a drop in the glass transition temperature and storage modulus by, thereby, enhancing flexibility and reducing brittleness in the material. Although a slight reduction in the onset degradation temperature is observed, it does not impede the industrial processing of PVC plastisols at temperatures up to 190 °C. Optically, plasticized films exhibit high transparency with minimal UV and visible light absorption, which renders them suitable for applications necessitating clarity. The water vapor transmission rate analysis indicates increased permeability, influenced by molecular volumes. Atomic force microscopy reveals a compacted, homogeneous surface structure in most plasticized films, which signifies improved film quality. Thus, utilizing cinnamic acid derivatives as PVC plasticizers offers substantial mechanical and structural benefits, while compatibility ensures effective integration by contributing to environmentally sustainable PVC formulations with enhanced performance.

Low-Temperature Alignment of Conjugated Polymers by Plasticizer-Aided Physical Rubbing

Rubbing-induced alignment of conjugated polymers is systematically investigated in terms of intra- and inter-molecular interaction. Various polymer films with a broad range of polymer chain rigidity are rubbed, and the degree of polymer chain alignment is quantitatively characterized. The rubbing technique effectively aligns crystalline domains in conjugated polymer films when the temperature approaches the critical rubbing temperature (T r c $T_{\mathrm{r}}^{\mathrm{c}}$ ), at which the rearrangement and the slip of polymer chains are possible. A polymer with significant intra-/inter-molecular interactions exhibits higherT r c $T_{\mathrm{r}}^{\mathrm{c}}$ , though quantitative analysis reveals an intermediately aligned state at temperature Tr ' lower thanT r c $T_{\mathrm{r}}^{\mathrm{c}}$ . This state originates from polymer chain aggregation in an amorphous domain. The intermediately aligned state can be controlled by plasticizer, which enables low-temperature alignment of high-mobility polymer film by reducing Tr ' to near 100 °C, increases the crystallinity, and improves the alignment effect at this state comparable to that of the completely aligned state obtained at extremely high temperatures.

RF Welding of Dielectric Lossless Foam Particles by the Application of a Dielectric Heatable Coating with High Recycling Potential

Due to its chemical structure and the resulting dielectric properties, the processing of the commonly used particle foam material, expanded polypropylene (ePP), is limited. Processing within the radio-frequency welding process is therefore only possible with the use of processing aids. In this paper, a new approach for the use of a solid and dielectric heatable coating for the production of three-dimensional welded components out of ePP is presented. For this purpose, three different types of water-soluble polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were analyzed as potential coating materials. The thermal and dielectric properties of the coating were further adjusted by a modification with glycerol. The maximum amount of glycerol tested was 25% by volume. It influences both the temperature development in the radio-frequency (RF) welding process as well as the adhesive bond between the ePP foam particles. It is shown that the 120 °C approach in the RF welding process resulted in a cohesive bond between the coating layers. In this way, bonded plates can be produced. In mechanical tests with compression of 20%, the manufactured plates show sufficient load capacity. Furthermore, it can be shown that a separation of PVA and ePP by type, and thereby a separation of the foam particles, is possible with the use of hot water. This might open a new way for recycling of particle foams.

Homologue Composition of Technical Chlorinated Paraffins Used in Several Countries over the Last 50 Years─SCCPs Are Still Out There

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are widely produced chemicals, with certain CP subgroups facing global restrictions due to their environmental dispersion, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. To evaluate the effectiveness of these international restrictions, we assessed the homologue group contribution and the mass fraction of short-chain CPs (SCCPs: C10-C13), medium-chain CPs (MCCPs: C14-C17), and long-chain CPs (LCCPs: ≥C18) in 36 technical CP mixtures used worldwide over the last 50 years. Using low-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS), we quantified 74 CP homologue groups (C10Cl4-C20Cl10). A Stretchable Polymer Conductor Through the Mutual Plasticization Effect

Intrinsically stretchable conductors play key roles in the dynamic interfacing of electronic devices with soft human tissues. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high electrical conductivity and mechanical stretchability. Here, highly stretchable and conductive thin film electrodes are prepared by combining PEDOT:PSS and a mutually plasticized polymer dopant. Notably, harsh acid treatment for conductivity enhancement is avoided, and good solvent tolerance and high optical transparency are realized, all of which are essential to device fabrication. A transparent electrochromic display is further developed that can bear stretching up to 80% strain, demonstrating its promising application in next-generation optoelectronics.

Effects of co-plasticization of glycerol and small molecular esters on the physicochemical properties of extrusion-blown high-content starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) films

BACKGROUND

Poor mechanical and water barrier properties of starch-based films severely restrict their applications as packaging materials. In this study, glycerol was combined with various small molecular esters (SMEs) with different molecular structures to plasticize high-content starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (80/20, w/w) films (SPFs) prepared by extrusion blowing. The effects of co-plasticization on the physicochemical properties and film-forming mechanism of SPFs were investigated.

RESULTS

The addition of glycerides to SPFs reduced intermolecular interaction, increased molecular chain mobility, and decreased glass transition, melting temperatures, and crystallinity. Mechanical and water barrier properties of SPFs were improved significantly with the co-plasticization of glycerol and SMEs. The incorporation of triacetate glyceride increased tensile strength of SPFs by 54% and the water contact angle by up to 95°. The SPF with diacetate glyceride exhibited the minimum water vapor permeability, which decreased by 39%.

CONCLUSION

The levels of hydrophilic/hydrophobic groups in SMEs and their molecular weights were essential for the plasticizing effects. Glycerides tended to infiltrate into starch for effective plasticization compared with citrates. The combination of glycerol and glycerides had better plasticizing effects on starch. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Time-Dependent Rheological Properties of Cemented Aeolian Sand-Fly Ash Backfill Vary with Particles Size and Plasticizer

The use of cemented Aeolian sand-fly ash backfill (CAFB) material to fill the mining area to improve the surface subsidence damage caused by underground coal mining is in the development stage. Their performance with large overflow water and strength loss is not well understood. Few research has been conducted to understand the effects of aeolian sand and coal gangue on the rheological properties of CAFB with plasticizers. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of a plasticizer on the rheological properties, specifically yield stress and viscosity, of CAFB prepared with aeolian sand and coal gangue. CAFB mixes containing 0%, 0.05%, and 0.1% plasticizers were prepared, and yield stress and viscosity were determined at different intervals. Additional tests, such as thermal analysis and zeta potential analysis, were also conducted. It was found that the rheological properties of CAFB are the comprehensive manifestation of the composite characteristics of various models. Reasonable particle size distribution and less plasticizer can ensure the stability of the slurry structure and reduce the slurry settlement and the risk of pipe blocking. The findings of this study will be beneficial in the design and production of CAFB material.

Intrinsically Stretchable Phosphorescent Light-Emitting Materials for Stretchable Displays

Intrinsically stretchable organic light-emitting diodes (is-OLEDs) have attracted significant attention for use in next-generation displays. However, most studies conducted to date have focused on how to make fluorescent materials stretchable, utilizing singlet excitons with a theoretical internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 25%. Although phosphorescent materials have a high theoretical IQE of 100%, no previous work has attempted to develop stretchable phosphorescent light-emitting materials. In this work, we designed a solution-processable and intrinsically stretchable phosphorescent light-emitting layer (isp-EML) by blending various additives together with a mixture of a polymer host, poly(9-vinyl carbazole) (PVK), and a small-molecule emitting dopant, tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)₃). The poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) additive significantly improved the stretchability (∼100% strain), brightness (∼5400 cd/m²), and efficiency (∼25.3 cd/A) of the isp-EML compared with a conventional phosphorescent EML (approximately 3% strain, 3750 cd/m², and 12.1 cd/A). Furthermore, by changing the emitting dopant in the isp-EML, we could control the red, green, and blue emission colors, with increasing mechanical and electrical properties of the isp-EML. These results highlight the promising potential of the novel blend system using phosphorescent materials and additives for application in highly stretchable and efficient OLEDs.

Release of Additives from Agricultural Plastic Films in Water: Experiment and Modeling

Globally, more than 6 million metric tons of agricultural plastic films are used to increase crop yields and reduce the use of water and herbicides, resulting in the contamination of soil and water by plastic debris and additives. However, knowledge of the occurrence and release of additives from agricultural films is limited. In this study, suspect screening with high-resolution mass spectrometry, one-dimensional Fickian diffusion models, and linear free energy relationships (LFERs) were used to determine the occurrence and mass transfer of various additives from agricultural plastic films. A total of 89 additives were tentatively identified in 40 films, and 62 of them were further validated and quantified. The aqueous concentrations of 26 released additives reached mg L^-1 after a 28 day incubation at 25 °C. Diffusion models and LFERs demonstrated that the film-water partition coefficient and the diffusivity in the polymer, the two critical parameters controlling the mass transfer, could be predicted using Abraham descriptors. The findings of this study highlighted the need for future research on the environmental fate and risk assessment of previously neglected additives in agricultural plastic films and other similar products.

Development and Characterization of Polylactic Acid (PLA)-Based Nanocomposites Used for Food Packaging

The present study is focused on polylactic acid (PLA) blending with bio nanoadditives, such as Tonsil^® (clay) and Aerosil^®, to obtain nanocomposites for a new generation of food packaging. The basic composition was enhanced using Sorbitan oleate (E494) and Proviplast as plasticizers, increasing the composite samples' stability and their mechanical strength. Four mixtures were prepared: S1 with Tonsil^®; S2 with Aerosil^®; S3 with Aerosil^® + Proviplast; and S4 with Sabosorb. They were complexly characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical tests on different temperatures, and absorption of the saline solution. FTIR shows a proper embedding of the filler component into the polymer matrix and DSC presents a good stability at the living body temperature for all prepared samples. Micro and nanostructural aspects were evidenced by SEM and AFM microscopy, revealing that S3 has the most compact and uniform filler distribution and S4 has the most irregular one. Thus, S3 evidenced the best diametral tensile strength and S4 evidenced the weakest values. All samples present the best bending strength at 18 °C and fair values at 4 °C, with the best values being obtained for the S1 sample and the worst for S4. The lack of mechanical strength of the S4 sample is compensated by its best resistance at liquid penetration, while S1 is more affected by the liquid infiltrations. Finally, results show that PLA composites are suitable for biodegradable and disposable food packages, and the desired properties could be achieved by proper adjustment of the filler proportions.

Fabrication of Cellulose Acetate-Based Proton Exchange Membrane with Sulfonated SiO2 and Plasticizers for Microbial Fuel Cell Applications

Developing a hybrid composite polymer membrane with desired functional and intrinsic properties has gained significant consideration in the fabrication of proton exchange membranes for microbial fuel cell applications. Among the different polymers, a naturally derived cellulose biopolymer has excellent benefits over synthetic polymers derived from petrochemical byproducts. However, the inferior physicochemical, thermal, and mechanical properties of biopolymers limit their benefits. In this study, we developed a new hybrid polymer composite of a semi-synthetic cellulose acetate (CA) polymer derivate incorporated with inorganic silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles, with or without a sulfonation (-SO₃H) functional group (sSiO₂). The excellent composite membrane formation was further improved by adding a plasticizer (glycerol (G)) and optimized by varying the SiO₂ concentration in the polymer membrane matrix. The composite membrane's effectively improved physicochemical properties (water uptake, swelling ratio, proton conductivity, and ion exchange capacity) were identified because of the intramolecular bonding between the cellulose acetate, SiO₂, and plasticizer. The proton (H⁺) transfer properties were exhibited in the composite membrane by incorporating sSiO₂. The composite CAG-2% sSiO₂ membrane exhibited a higher proton conductivity (6.4 mS/cm) than the pristine CA membrane. The homogeneous incorporation of SiO₂ inorganic additives in the polymer matrix provided excellent mechanical properties. Due to the enhancement of the physicochemical, thermal, and mechanical properties, CAG-sSiO₂ can effectively be considered an eco-friendly, low-cost, and efficient proton exchange membrane for enhancing MFC performance.

Hybrid Fabrication of Prestrain-locked Acrylic Dielectric Elastomer Thin Films and Multilayer Stacks

Dielectric elastomers based on commercial acrylic dielectric elastomers (VHB adhesive films) have been widely investigated for soft actuators due to their large electrically driven actuation strain and high work density. However, the VHB films require prestretching to overcome electromechanical instability, which adds fabrication complexity. In addition, their high viscoelasticity leads to a low response speed. Interpenetrated polymer networks (IPNs) were developed to lock the prestrain in VHB films, resulting in free-standing films that are capable of large-strain actuation. In this work, a prestrain-locked high-performance dielectric elastomer thin film (VHB-IPN-P) by introducing 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate to create an IPN in the VHB network and a plasticizer to enhance the actuation speed is reported. VHB-IPN-P based actuators exhibit stable actuation at 60% strain up to 10 Hz and reach a peak energy density of 102 J/kg. In addition, a hybrid process has also been developed for the fabrication of multilayer stacks of VHB-IPN-P with strong inter-layer bonding and structural integrity. Four-layer stacks fabricated preserve the strain and energy density of single-layer VHB-IPN-P films but with linearly scaled force and work output. This article is protected by copyright. Study of the Plasticization Effect of 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Acetate in TPS/PVA Biodegradable Blends Produced by Melt-Mixing

The first step towards the production and marketing of bioplastics based on renewable and sustainable materials is to know their behavior at a semi-industrial scale. For this reason, in this work, the properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films plasticized by a green solvent, as the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim⁺][Ac^-]) ionic liquid, produced by melt-mixing were studied. These blends were prepared with a different content of [Emim⁺][Ac^-] (27.5-42.5 %wt.) as a unique plasticizer. According to the results, this ionic liquid is an excellent plasticizer due to the transformation of the crystalline structure of the starch to an amorphous state, the increase in flexibility, and the drop in T_g, as the [Emim⁺][Ac^-] amount increases. These findings show that the properties of these biomaterials could be modified in the function of [Emim⁺][Ac^-] content in the formulations of TPS, depending on their final use, thus becoming a functional alternative to conventional polymers.

Development and Characterization of Pullulan-Based Orodispersible Films of Iron

Iron deficiency is the principal cause of nutritional anemia and it constitutes a major health problem, especially during pregnancy. Despite the availability of various non-invasive traditional oral dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, and liquid preparations of iron, they are hard to consume for special populations such as pregnant women, pediatric, and geriatric patients with dysphagia and vomiting tendency. The objective of the present study was to develop and characterize pullulan-based iron-loaded orodispersible films (i-ODFs). Microparticles of iron were formulated by a microencapsulation technique, to mask the bitter taste of iron, and ODFs were fabricated by a modified solvent casting method. Morphological characteristics of the microparticles were identified by optical microscopy and the percentage of iron loading was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The fabricated i-ODFs were evaluated for their morphology by scanning electron microscopy. Other parameters including thickness, folding endurance, tensile strength, weight variation, disintegration time, percentage moisture loss, surface pH, and in vivo animal safety were evaluated. Lastly, stability studies were carried out at a temperature of 25 °C/60% RH. The results of the study confirmed that pullulan-based i-ODFs had good physicochemical properties, excellent disintegration time, and optimal stability at specified storage conditions. Most importantly, the i-ODFs were free from irritation when administered to the tongue as confirmed by the hamster cheek pouch model and surface pH determination. Collectively, the present study suggests that the film-forming agent, pullulan, could be successfully employed on a lab scale to formulate orodispersible films of iron. In addition, i-ODFs can be processed easily on a large scale for commercial use.

Release Enhancement by Plasticizer Inclusion for Amorphous Solid Dispersions Containing High Tg Drugs

PURPOSE

Plasticizers are commonly used in the preparation of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) with the main goal of aiding processability; however, to the best of our knowledge, the impact of plasticizers on drug release has not been explored. The goal of this study was to evaluate diverse plasticizers, including glycerol and citrate derivatives, as additives to increase the drug loading where good drug release could be achieved from copovidone (PVPVA)-based dispersions, focusing on high glass transition (T_g) drugs, atazanavir (ATZ) and ledipasvir (LED).

METHODS

ASDs were prepared using the high T_g compounds, atazanavir (ATZ) and ledipasvir (LED), as model drugs. Release was evaluated using surface normalized dissolution testing. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure glass transition temperature and water vapor sorption was performed on select samples.

RESULTS

The presence of a plasticizer at 5% w/w for ATZ and 10% w/w for LED ASDs, led to improved drug release. For ATZ ASDs, in the absence of plasticizer, release was very poor at drug loadings of 10% w/w and above. Good release was obtained for plasticized ASDs up to a drug loading of 25%. The corresponding improvement for LED was from 5 to 20% DL. Interestingly, for a low T_g compound, ritonavir, relatively smaller improvements in release as a function of drug loading were achieved through plasticizer incorporation.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of plasticizers represents a potential new strategy to increase drug loading in ASDs for high T_g compounds with a low tendency to crystallize and may help improve a major limitation of ASD formulations, namely the high excipient burden.

Soy Protein Hydrolysates Affect the Structural and Mechanical Properties of Soy Protein-Wheat Gluten Extrudates Using High Moisture Extrusion

This study aimed to investigate the effect of hydrolyzed soy protein isolate (HSPI) as a plasticizer in the soy protein mixture-wheat gluten (SP-WG) extrudates on its structural and mechanical properties during high moisture extrusion. Those SP were prepared by mixing soy protein isolate (SPI) and HSPI with different ratios. HSPI primarily consisted of small molecular weight peptides measured with size exclusion chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The elastic modulus of SP-WG blends decreased with increased HSPI contents through the closed cavity rheometer. Adding HSPI at low concentrations (≤30 wt% of SP) enhanced a fibrous appearance and higher mechanical anisotropy while adding more HSPI resulted in a compact and brittle structure and tended to be isotropic. It can be concluded that the partial addition of HSPI as a plasticizer can promote the formation of a fibrous structure with enhanced mechanical anisotropy.

Development of a layered bacterial nanocellulose-PHBV composite for food packaging

BACKGROUND

Most of the current materials used in food packaging are synthetic and non-degradable, raising environmental issues derived from the accumulation of plastics in landfills/waterways. The food industry increasingly needs eco-friendly sustainable materials that meet food-packaging requirements. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), a biopolymer obtained by fermentation, offers very good mechanical properties and the ability to carry and deliver active substances. However, its water-vapor permeability is too high for food-packaging applications. In this work, a layered biodegradable composite based on BNC and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHBV) was produced, attempting to improve its overall barrier properties. Polyhydroxyalkanoate is a biopolymer with high degree of hydrophobicity and biodegradability, and is also obtained by fermentation. Wet BNC membranes produced by static culture were plasticized by impregnation of solutions of either glycerol (BNC_gly ) or polyethylene glycol (M_W 600) (BNC_PEG ). The plasticized BNC was then coated with PHBV solution dissolved in formic acid, and oven dried at 148 °C.

RESULTS

Overall, PHBV coating on plasticized BNC reduced water vapor permeability significantly (from 0.990 to 0.032 g.μm.m^-2 .day^-1 .Pa^-1 ) under 50% relative humidity. It increased the hydrophobicity (contact angle from 10-40° to 80-90°) but decreased the stiffness (from 3.1 GPa to 1.3 Gpa) of the composite.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the mechanical and barrier properties of the layered composite obtained were considered suitable for food-packaging applications. The plasticizing (with glycerol or polyethylene glycol) of BNC significantly improved the mechanical performance and the PHBV coating reduced the water affinity (vapor and liquid state) on BNC. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Combined Effects from Dual Incorporation of ATBC as Plasticizer and Mesoporous MCM-41 as Nucleating Agent on the PLA Isothermal Crystallization in Environmentally-Friendly Ternary Composite Systems

Different materials, based on an L-rich polylactide (PLA) as matrix, acetyl tri-n-butyl citrate (ATBC) as plasticizer, and mesoporous Mobile Crystalline Material.41 (MCM-41) particles as nucleating agent, were attained by melt extrusion. These materials are constituted by (a) binary blends of PLA and ATBC with different contents of the latest; (b) a dual compound of PLA and a given amount of MCM-41 silica (5 wt.%); and (c) ternary composites that include PLA, ATBC at several compositions and mesoporous MCM-41 at 5 wt.%. Influence of the incorporation of the plasticizer and nucleating particles has been comprehensively analyzed on the different phase transitions: glass transition, cold crystallization, melt crystallization and melting processes. Presence of both additives moves down the temperature at which PLA phase transitions take place, while allowing the PLA crystallization from the melt at 10 °C/min in the composites. This tridimensional ordering is not noticeable in the pristine PLA matrix and, accordingly, PLA crystallization rate is considerably increased under dynamic conditions and also after isothermal crystallization from either the melt or the glassy state. An important synergistic effect of dual action of ATBC and MCM-41 has been, therefore, found.

Effects of plasticizer diisobutyl adipate on the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) endocrine system

Plasticizer pollution of the water environment is one of the world's most serious environmental issues. Phthalate plasticizers can disrupt endocrine function in vertebrates. Therefore, this study analyzed thyroid-related, reproduction-related, and estrogen-responsive genes in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) to determine whether non-phthalate diisobutyl adipate (DIBA) plasticizer could affect endocrine hormone activity or not. Developmental toxicity during fish embryogenesis was also evaluated. At a concentration of 11.57 mg/l, embryonic exposure to DIBA increased the mortality rate. Although abnormal development, including body curvature, edema, and lack of swim bladder inflation, was observed at 3.54 and 11.57 mg/l DIBA, growth inhibition and reduced swimming performance were also observed. In addition, DIBA exposure increased the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone beta-subunit (tshβ) and deiodinase 1 (dio1) but decreased the levels of thyroid hormone receptor alpha (trα) and beta (trβ). These results suggest that DIBA has thyroid hormone-disrupting activities in fish. However, kisspeptin (kiss1 and kiss2), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (gnrh1), follicle-stimulating hormone beta (fshβ), luteinizing hormone beta (lhβ), choriogenin H (chgH), and vitellogenin (vtg1) expression did not change dose-dependently in response to DIBA exposure, whereas gnrh2 and vtg2 expression was elevated. These results indicate that DIBA has low estrogenic activity and does not disrupt the endocrine reproduction system in fish. Overall, this is the first report indicating that non-phthalate DIBA plasticizer is embryotoxic and disrupt thyroid hormone activity in fish.

[Plasticizers Used in Polyvinyl Chloride Toys (2019-2020)]

We determined the fifteen types of plasticizers, including four kinds of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) used in 220 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) toys on Japanese market from 2019 to 2020. Three kinds of previously undetected types of PAEs were also detected, but not identified in this study. Di (2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHTP) was the highest detection rate in 209 soft PVC toys out of 220 toys, with 71.2% for designated toys and 88.9% for not-designated toys, respectively, showing a gradual increase from the previous reports in 2009 and 2014. On the other hand, the usages of o-acetyl tributyl citrate and adipic acid esters decreased, but the six types of PAEs prohibited to use for the designated toys in Japan were not detected in them, the usage of diisobutyl phthalate were increased. In contrast, four types of PAEs were detected in not-designated toys. Among them, the detection ratio of di (2-ethyhexyl) phthalate decreased to about 1/10. The content levels of plasticizers in per each sample were continued to keep low level from the report five years ago. These results showed that the main plasticizer used in PVC toys is DEHTP, and that the usage of other plasticizers was decreased.

Effect of Toxic Phthalate-Based Plasticizer on the Biodegradability of Polyhydroxyalkanoate

While new biodegradable materials are being rapidly introduced to address plastic pollution, their end-of-life impacts remain unclear. Biodegradable plastics typically comprise a biopolymer matrix with functional additives and/or solid fillers, which may be toxic. Here, using an established method for continuous biodegradation monitoring, we investigated the impact of a commonly used plasticizer, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), on the biodegradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) in soil. The presence of DBP delayed the initial stage of PHBV biodegradation but then accelerated subsequent rates of biodegradation. Furthermore, it led to significant increases in total bacterial and fungal biomass and altered the composition of microbial communities with significant increases in the relative abundances of Thauera (gammaproteobacterial) and Mucor circinelloides (fungal) populations. It is proposed, with evidence from biodegradation behavior and microbial analysis, that the presence of DBP likely stimulated a microbial community shift, introduced higher proportions of more readily degradable amorphous regions from the plasticizing effect, and facilitated access to the bulk polymer matrix for microorganisms or at least their associated enzymes. These effects in combination overcame the initial inhibition effect of the DBP and resulted in a net increase in the rate of biodegradation of PHBV.

The Physical Properties and Crystallization Kinetics of Biocomposite Films Based on PLLA and Spent Coffee Grounds

In the context of today's needs for environmental sustainability, it is important to develop new materials that are based on renewable resources and biodegrade at the end of their life. Bioplastics reinforced by agricultural waste have the potential to cause a revolution in many industrial applications. This paper reports the physical properties and crystallization kinetics of biocomposite films based on poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and 10 wt.% of spent coffee grounds (SCG). To enhance adhesion between the PLLA matrix and SCG particles, a compatibilizing agent based on itaconic anhydride (IA)-grafted PLLA (PLLA-g-IA) was prepared by reactive extrusion using dicumyl peroxide (DCP). Furthermore, due to the intended application of the film in the packaging industry, the organic plasticizer acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) is used to improve processing and increase ductility. The crystallization behavior and thermal properties were observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Crystallinity degree increased from 3,5 (neat PLLA) up to 48% (PLLA/PLLA-g-IA/ATBC/SCG) at the highest cooling rate. The physical properties were evaluated by tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The combination of the compatibilizer, SCG, and ATBC led to a synergistic effect that positively influenced the supramolecular structure, internal damping, and overall ductility of the composite films.

Screening of Potential Plasticizer Alternatives for Their Toxic Effects on Male Germline Stem Cells

Plasticizers give flexibility to a wide range of consumer and medical plastic products. Among them, phthalate esters are recognized as endocrine disruptors that target male reproductive functions. With this notion, past studies designed and produced alternative plasticizers that could replace phthalates with limited toxicity to the environment and to male reproductive functions. Here, we focused on one reproductive cell type that was not investigated in past studies-spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs)-and examined in vitro the effects on 22 compounds (seven plasticizers currently in use and 15 newly synthesized potential alternative plasticizers) for their effects on SSCs. Our in vitro compound screening analyses showed that a majority of the compounds examined had a limited level of toxicity to SSCs. Yet, some commercial plasticizers and their derivatives, such as DEHP (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and MEHP (mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate), were detrimental at 10^-5 to 10^-4 M. Among new compounds, some of maleate- and fumarate-derivatives showed toxic effects. In contrast, no detrimental effects were detected with two new compounds, BDDB (1,4 butanediol dibenzoate) and DOS (dioctyl succinate). Furthermore, SSCs that were exposed to BDDB and DOS in vitro successfully established spermatogenic colonies in testes of recipient mice after transplantation. These results demonstrate that SSC culture acts as an effective platform for toxicological tests on SSC function and provide novel information that two new compounds, BDDB and DOS, are alternative plasticizers that do not have significant negative impacts on SSC integrity.

Evaluation of Chemical Contaminants in Conventional and Unconventional Ragusana Provola Cheese

Organic contaminants belonging to various classes (plasticizers, bisphenols, pesticides, PCBs, and PAHs,) were analyzed in samples of provola cheese produced from Friesian dairy cows fed with a conventional diet (group CTR), and an unconventional diet (group BIO) enriched with olive cake (OC). The results show that for most determined contaminants, the differences between the two diets were very slight, indicating that the contamination does not depend on the olive cake integrated in the unconventional diet. The results also indicate that the minimal contamination could result from environmental contamination or the production process. It can be concluded that unconventional provola is as safe for the consumer as conventional provola.

The Use of Polymer Inclusion Membranes for the Removal of Metal Ions from Aqueous Solutions-The Latest Achievements and Potential Industrial Applications: A Review

The growing demand for environmentally friendly and economical methods of removing toxic metal ions from polluted waters and for the recovery of valuable noble metal ions from various types of waste, which are often treated as their secondary source, has resulted in increased interest in techniques based on the utilization of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs). PIMs are characterized by many advantages (e.g., the possibility of simultaneous extraction and back extraction, excellent stability and high reusability), and can be adapted to the properties of the removed target analyte by appropriate selection of carriers, polymers and plasticizers used for their formulation. However, the selectivity and efficiency of the membrane process depends on many factors (e.g., membrane composition, nature of removed metal ions, composition of aqueous feed solution, etc.), and new membranes are systematically designed to improve these parameters. Numerous studies aimed at improving PIM technology may contribute to the wider use of these methods in the future on an industrial scale, e.g., in wastewater treatment. This review describes the latest achievements related to the removal of various metal ions by PIMs over the past 3 years, with particular emphasis on solutions with potential industrial application.

Tailoring and Long-Term Preservation of the Properties of PLA Composites with "Green" Plasticizers

Concerning new polylactide (PLA) applications, the study investigates the toughening of PLA-CaSO₄ β-anhydrite II (AII) composites with bio-sourced tributyl citrate (TBC). The effects of 5-20 wt.% TBC were evaluated in terms of morphology, mechanical and thermal properties, focusing on the enhancement of PLA crystallization and modification of glass transition temperature (T_g). Due to the strong plasticizing effects of TBC (even at 10%), the plasticized composites are characterized by significant decrease of T_g and rigidity, increase of ductility and impact resistance. Correlated with the amounts of plasticizer, a dramatic drop in melt viscosity is also revealed. Therefore, for applications requiring increased viscosity and enhanced melt strength (extrusion, thermoforming), the reactive modification, with up to 1% epoxy functional styrene-acrylic oligomers, was explored to enhance their rheology. Moreover, larger quantities of products were obtained by reactive extrusion (REX) and characterized to evidence their lower stiffness, enhanced ductility, and toughness. In current prospects, selected samples were tested for the extrusion of tubes (straws) and films. The migration of plasticizer was not noted (at 10% TBC), whereas the mechanical and thermal characterizations of films after two years of aging evidenced a surprising preservation of properties.

Omics Markers of Red Blood Cell Transfusion in Trauma

Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is a life-saving intervention for millions of trauma patients every year worldwide. While hemoglobin thresholds are clinically driving the need for RBC transfusion, limited information is available with respect to transfusion efficacy at the molecular level in clinically relevant cohorts. Here, we combined plasma metabolomic and proteomic measurements in longitudinal samples (n = 118; up to 13 time points; total samples: 690) from trauma patients enrolled in the control of major bleeding after trauma (COMBAT) study. Samples were collected in the emergency department and at continuous intervals up to 168 h (seven days) post-hospitalization. Statistical analyses were performed to determine omics correlate to transfusions of one, two, three, five, or more packed RBC units. While confounded by the concomitant transfusion of other blood components and other iatrogenic interventions (e.g., surgery), here we report that transfusion of one or more packed RBCs—mostly occurring within the first 4 h from hospitalization in this cohort—results in the increase in circulating levels of additive solution components (e.g., mannitol, phosphate) and decreases in the levels of circulating markers of hypoxia, such as lactate, carboxylic acids (e.g., succinate), sphingosine 1-phosphate, polyamines (especially spermidine), and hypoxanthine metabolites with potential roles in thromboinflammatory modulation after trauma. These correlations were the strongest in patients with the highest new injury severity scores (NISS > 25) and lowest base excess (BE < −10), and the effect observed was proportional to the number of units transfused. We thus show that transfusion of packed RBCs transiently increases the circulating levels of plasticizers—likely leaching from the blood units during refrigerated storage in the blood bank. Changes in the levels of arginine metabolites (especially citrulline to ornithine ratios) are indicative of an effect of transfusion on nitric oxide metabolism, which could potentially contribute to endothelial regulation. RBC transfusion was associated with changes in the circulating levels of coagulation factors, fibrinogen chains, and RBC-proteins. Changes in lysophospholipids and acyl-carnitines were observed upon transfusion, suggestive of an effect on the circulating lipidome—though cell-extrinsic/intrinsic effects and/or the contribution of other blood components cannot be disentangled. By showing a significant decrease in circulating markers of hypoxia, this study provides the first multi-omics characterization of RBC transfusion efficacy in a clinically relevant cohort of trauma patients.

Recent Advances in Starch-Based Blends and Composites for Bioplastics Applications

Environmental pollution by synthetic polymers is a global problem and investigating substitutes for synthetic polymers is a major research area. Starch can be used in formulating bioplastic materials, mainly as blends or composites with other polymers. The major drawbacks of using starch in such applications are water sensitivity and poor mechanical properties. Attempts have been made to improve the mechanical properties of starch-based blends and composites, by e.g., starch modification or plasticization, matrix reinforcement, and polymer blending. Polymer blending can bring synergetic benefits to blends and composites, but necessary precautions must be taken to ensure the compatibility of hydrophobic polymers and hydrophilic starch. Genetic engineering offers new possibilities to modify starch inplanta in a manner favorable for bioplastics applications, while the incorporation of antibacterial and/or antioxidant agents into starch-based food packaging materials brings additional advantages. In conclusion, starch is a promising material for bioplastic production, with great potential for further improvements. This review summarizes the recent advances in starch-based blends and composites and highlights the potential strategies for overcoming the major drawbacks of using starch in bioplastics applications.

Enhanced Actuation Performance of Polymeric Composites by Simultaneously Incorporating Covalent-Bond-Functionalized Dielectric Nanoparticles and Polar Plasticizer

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), similar to artificial muscles, are widely applied in the fields of robotics and biomedical devices. In this work, 3-mercaptopropyl ethyoxyl di(tridecyl-pentaethoxy) silane (Si747)-modified BaTiO₃ (BTO) nanoparticles (denoted as Si747@BTO) were utilized as dielectric filler to improve the dielectric constant while epoxy soybean oil (ESO) was employed as a plasticizer to decrease the elastic modulus, with the aim of improving the actuation performance of epoxy natural rubber (ENR) composites. The participation of Si747 in the vulcanization reaction of ENR led to the formation of covalent bonds between BTO and ENR chains, resulting in a uniform dispersion of BTO nanoparticles in the ENR matrix. Among obtained composites, the 50 phr ESO/Si747@BTO/ENR exhibited a relatively high actuated strain of 8.89% at 22 kV/mm, which is a value about 5.1-fold higher than that of pure ENR (1.45%) under the same electric field.

PHB Processability and Property Improvement with Linear-Chain Polyester Oligomers Used as Plasticizers

In 2021, global petroleum-based plastic production reached over 400 million metric tons (Mt), and the accumulation of these non-biodegradable plastics in the environment is a worldwide concern. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) offers many advantages over traditional petroleum-based plastics, being biobased, completely biodegradable, and non-toxic. However, its production and use are still challenging due to its low deformation capacity and narrow processing window. In this work, two linear-chain polyester oligomers were used as plasticizers to improve the processability and properties of PHB. Thermal analyses, XRD, and polarized optical microscopy were performed to evaluate the plasticizing effect on the PHB and the reflection on the mechanical behavior. Both oligomers acted as PHB plasticizers, with a reduction in T_g and T_m as a function of the plasticizer concentration, which can make it easier to handle the material in thermal processing and reduce the probability of thermal degradation. Plasticizer 2 proved to be the most promising between the two with an optimized condition of 20%, in which there was a decrease in elastic modulus of up to 72% and an increase in the maximum elongation of 467%.

Physical and textural properties of functional edible protein films from soybean using an innovative 3D printing technology

Increasing market demand for sustainable, environmentally friendly edible film materials has called for the development of new customizable production methods utilizing emerging technologies such as 3D printing. We hereby report a new method to generate functional edible soy protein isolate films prepared from three types of soybeans (AR-R11-7999, MO-S17-17168, and MO-S17-19874R) using an innovative 3D printing technology. The protein contents in AR-R11-7999, MO-S17-17168, and MO-S17-19874R soybean meals and their corresponding protein isolates were 40.0, 39.1, and 39.9; and 84.5, 84.7, and 87.3 % (w/w, dry basis), respectively. Response surface methodology was used to maximize the tensile and puncture strength and minimize the thickness of the 3D-printed edible films using protein concentration, plasticizer concentration (glycerol), and drying time as the independent variables. The optimized film production conditions were determined as soy protein concentration: 8.91%, plasticizer concentration: 3.00%, and drying time: 3.98 h with a desirability value of 0.7428. The optimized conditions were then successfully verified with the original soybean lot with a nonsignificant difference in physical properties. At the optimized conditions, the 3D-printed edible films using three soybean lots revealed: 0.108-0.114 mm thickness; 14.79-16.07 MPa tensile strength; 6.97-8.20 N puncture strength; 90.81-91.53, -1.89 to -1.31, and 14.85-17.25 were color parameters L*, a*, and b*, respectively; 1.22-1.36 g/cm³ density; and 104.4-105.7% elongation at break ratio (%). PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Edible soy protein films produced by an extrusion-based 3D printing approach are highly customizable and precise, and could be produced at an industrial scale. This newly produced environment-friendly soy protein-based edible film can serve as an alternate packaging to synthetic plastics and reduce the environmental landfill problem while adding value to soybean produced in the mid-south United States.

Enhancement of Magneto-Induced Modulus by the Combination of Filler and Plasticizer Additives-Based Magnetorheological Elastomer

Filler additive is used to provide superior bonding in rubber matrix to enhance the storage modulus of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE). However, the magneto-induced modulus is reduced as the initial storage modulus increases. Therefore, this paper aims to increase the magneto-induced modulus and maintain the initial storage modulus by combining filler and plasticizer additives. Both types of additives have different functions, where cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) is capable of enhancing the maximum storage modulus and silicone oil (SO) reduces the initial storage modulus. Thus, four MRE samples have been fabricated using (a) no additive, (b) CoFe₂O₄, (c) SO, and (d) a combination of CoFe₂O₄ and SO. The sample's hardness and magnetic properties were investigated via Durometer Shore A and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), respectively. Furthermore, the rheological properties of MRE samples in terms of storage modulus were investigated upon the frequency and magnetic field sweep using a rheometer. The results demonstrated that the storage modulus of the MRE samples has increased with increasing the oscillation frequency from 0.1 to 50 Hz. Interestingly, the combination of additives has produced the largest value of magneto-induced modulus of 0.90 MPa as compared to other samples. Furthermore, their initial storage modulus was in between samples with SO (lowest) and without additive (highest). Therefore, fundamental knowledge in adding the combination of additives can offer solutions for a wide range of stiffness in MR device applications such as vibration and noise control devices, sensing devices, and actuators.

Endocrine-Disrupting Effects of Bisphenol A on the Cardiovascular System: A Review

Currently, the plastic monomer and plasticizer bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most widely used chemicals. BPA is present in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, commonly used in food storage and industrial or medical products. However, the use of this synthetic compound is a growing concern, as BPA is an endocrine-disrupting compound and can bind mainly to estrogen receptors, interfering with different functions at the cardiovascular level. Several studies have investigated the disruptive effects of BPA; however, its cardiotoxicity remains unclear. Therefore, this review’s purpose is to address the most recent studies on the implications of BPA on the cardiovascular system. Our findings suggest that BPA impairs cardiac excitability through intracellular mechanisms, involving the inhibition of the main ion channels, changes in Ca²⁺ handling, the induction of oxidative stress, and epigenetic modifications. Our data support that BPA exposure increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including atherosclerosis and its risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, BPA exposure is also particularly harmful in pregnancy, promoting the development of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. In summary, BPA exposure compromises human health, promoting the development and progression of CVDs and risk factors. Further studies are needed to clarify the human health effects of BPA-induced cardiotoxicity.

[Application progress of covalent organic framework materials in extraction of toxic and harmful substances]

Toxic and hazardous substances constitute a category of compounds that are potentially hazardous to humans, other organisms, and the environment. These substances include pesticides (benzoylureas, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids), persistent organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluorinated compounds), plasticizers (phthalate esters, phenolic endocrine disruptors), medicines (sulfonamides, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, tetracyclines, fluoroquinone antibiotics), heterocyclic aromatic amines, algal toxins, and radioactive substances. Discharge of these toxic and harmful substances, as well as their possible persistence and bioaccumulation, pose a major risk to human health, often to the extent of being life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to analyze and detect toxic and hazardous substances in the environment, drinking water, food, and daily commodities. Sample pretreatment is an imperative step in most of the currently used analytical methods, especially in the analysis of trace toxic and harmful substances in complex samples. An efficient and fast sample pretreatment technology not only helps improve the sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and accuracy of analytical methods, but also avoids contamination of the analytical instruments and even damages the performance and working life of instruments. Sample pretreatment techniques widely used in the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances include solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and dispersed solid-phase extraction (DSPE). The adsorbent material plays a key role in these pretreatment techniques, thereby determining their selectivity and efficiency. In recent years, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted increasing attention in sample pretreatment. COFs represent an exciting new class of porous crystalline materials constructed via the strong covalent bonding of organic building units through a reversible condensation reaction. COFs present four advantages: (1) precise control over structure type and pore size by consideration of the target molecular structure based on the connectivity and shape of the building units; (2) post-synthetic modification for chemical optimization of the pore interior toward optimized interaction with the target; (3) straightforward scalable synthesis; (4) feasible formation of composites with magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, silica, etc., which is beneficial to enhance the performance of COFs and meet the requirement of diverse pretreatment technologies. Because of the well-defined crystalline porous structures and tailored functionalities, COFs have excellent potential for use in target extraction. However, some issues need to be addressed for the application of COFs in the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances. (1) For the sample matrix, most of the reported COFs are highly hydrophobic, which limits their dispersibility in water-based samples, leading to poor extraction performance. COFs with good dispersibility in water-based samples are urgently required. (2) Besides, COFs rely on hydrophobic interaction, size repulsion, π-π stacking, and Van der Waals forces to extract target substances, but they are not effective for some polar targets. Thus, it is necessary to develop COFs with high affinity for polar toxic and hazardous substances. (3) Methods for the synthesis of COFs have evolved from solvothermal methods to room-temperature methods, mechanical grinding, microwave-assisted synthesis, ion thermal methods, etc. Most of the existing methods are time-consuming, laborious, and environmentally unfriendly. The starting materials are too expensive to prepare COFs in large quantities. More effort is required to improve the synthesis efficiency and overcome the obstacles in the application of COFs for extraction. This article summarizes and reviews the research progress in COFs toward the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances in recent years. Finally, the application prospects of COFs in this field are summarized, which serves as a reference for further research into pretreatment technologies based on COFs.

Simultaneous assessment of organophosphate flame retardants, plasticizers, trace metals, and house dust mite allergens in settled house dust

Settled house dust (SHD) is a reservoir for various contaminants, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), trace metals, and house dust mite allergens. This study aimed to characterize various chemical and biological contaminants in SHD and identify determinants governing the indoor contaminants. In total, 106 SHD samples were collected from 106 houses in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea, in 2021. Bedding dust samples were collected from 30 of these 106 houses. All participants completed a questionnaire comprised of housing and lifestyle-related factors. The samples were analyzed for 18 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), 16 phthalates, five alternative plasticizers (APs), seven trace metals, and two house dust mite allergens (Dermatophagoides farinae type 1 [Der f1] and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus type 1 [Der p1]). A multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the determinants governing the concentrations and profiles of various contaminants. OPFRs, phthalates, APs, and trace metals were detected in all SHD samples, indicating ubiquitous contamination in indoor environments. Among the three EDC groups, APs were detected at the highest concentrations (geometric mean [GM] (geometric standard deviation, [GSD]): 1452 (1.6) μg/g in total), followed by phthalates (GM (GSD): 676 (1.4) μg/g in total) and OPFRs (GM (GSD): 10 (1.4) μg/g in total). Der f1 was detected in all bedding dust samples with significantly higher levels than Der p1 (GM (GSD): 0.1 (1.8) μg/g vs. 1.4 × 10^-3 (2.3) μg/g). The concentrations of OPFRs, plasticizers, and trace metals in SHD were significantly associated with the type and number of electronic appliances and combustion activities. Der f1 was significantly associated with the number of occupants and water penetration. Ventilation, vacuum cleaning, and wet cleaning or dry mopping significantly reduced the levels of most contaminants in SHD. As residents are persistently exposed to a wide array of pollutants, comprehensive and adequate measures are required to prevent potential exposures.

Influence of the Polarity of the Plasticizer on the Mechanical Stability of the Filler Network by Simultaneous Mechanical and Dielectric Analysis

Four styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds were prepared to investigate the influence of the plasticizer polarity on the mechanical stability of the filler network using simultaneous mechanical and dielectric analysis. One compound was prepared without plasticizer and serves as a reference. The other three compounds were expanded with different plasticizers that have different polarities. Compared with an SBR sample without plasticizer, the conductivity of mechanically unloaded oil-extended SBR samples decreases by an order of magnitude. The polarity of the plasticizer shows hardly any influence because the plasticizers only affect the distribution of the filler clusters. Under static load, the dielectric properties seem to be oil-dependent. However, this behavior also results from the new distribution of the filler clusters caused by the mechanical damage and supported by the polarity grade of the plasticizer used. The Cole–Cole equation affirms these observations. The Cole–Cole relaxation time τ  and thus, the position of maximal dielectric loss increases as the polarity of the plasticizer used is also increased. This, in turn, decreases the broadness parameter α implying a broader response function.
