A theoretical investigation of benzothiadiazole derivatives for high efficiency OLEDs

It is of great importance and worthy of efforts to give a clear structure-property relationship and microscopic mechanism of fluorescence emitters with high quantum yield. In this work, we perform a detailed computational investigation to give an explanation to the high efficiency of a fluorescence emitter XBTD-NPh based TADF sensitized fluorescence (TSF) OLEDs, and construct a symmetry structure DSBNA-BTD. Theoretical calculations show that XBTD-NPh is a long-time phosphorescent material at 77 K and TADF is attributed to the RISC of T1 to S1 state. For DSBNA-BTD, excitons arrived at T1 state comes to a large rate of nonradiatively path to the ground state, meaning it is may not be an efficient TADF molecule. For both molecules, the fast IC between T2 and T1 state results in that the hot exciton channel T1-Tn-S1 makes no contribution to the TADF.

P-Block Antimony-Copper Single-Atom Alloys for Selective Nitrite Electroreduction to Ammonia

Electrocatalytic reduction of NO2- to NH3 (NO2RR) offers an effective method for alleviating NO2- pollution and generating valuable NH3. Herein, a p-block single-atom alloy, namely, isolated Sb alloyed in a Cu substrate (Sb1Cu), is explored as a durable and high-current-density NO2RR catalyst. As revealed by the theoretical calculations and operando spectroscopic measurements, we demonstrate that Sb1 incorporation can not only hamper the competing hydrogen evolution reaction but also optimize the d-band center of Sb1Cu and intermediate adsorption energies to boost the protonation energetics of NO2--to-NH3 conversion. Consequently, Sb1Cu integrated in a flow cell achieves an outstanding NH3 yield rate of 2529.4 μmol h-1 cm-2 and FENH3 of 95.9% at a high current density of 424.2 mA cm-2, as well as a high durability for 100 h of electrolysis.

Pushing the Limit of Photo-Controlled Polymerization: Hyperchromic and Bathochromic Effects

The photocatalyst (PC) zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) is highly efficient for photoinduced electron/energy transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization. However, ZnTPP suffers from poor absorbance of orange light by the so-called Q-band of the absorption spectrum (maximum absorption wavelength λmax = 600 nm, at which molar extinction coefficient εmax = 1.0×104 L/(mol·cm)), hindering photo-curing applications that entail long light penetration paths. Over the past decade, there has not been any competing candidate in terms of efficiency, despite a myriad of efforts in PC design. By theoretical evaluation, here we rationally introduce a peripheral benzo moiety on each of the pyrrole rings of ZnTPP, giving zinc tetraphenyl tetrabenzoporphyrin (ZnTPTBP). This modification not only enlarges the conjugation length of the system, but also alters the a1u occupied π molecular orbital energy level and breaks the accidental degeneracy between the a1u and a2u orbitals, which is responsible for the low absorption intensity of the Q-band. As a consequence, not only is there a pronounced hyperchromic and bathochromic effect (λmax = 655 nm and εmax = 5.2×104 L/(mol·cm)) of the Q-band, but the hyperchromic effect is achieved without increasing the intensity of the less useful, low wavelength absorption peaks of the PC. Remarkably, this strong 655 nm absorption takes advantage of deep-red (650-700 nm) light, a major component of solar light exhibiting good atmosphere penetration, exploited by the natural PC chlorophyll a as well. Compared with ZnTPP, ZnTPTBP displayed a 49% increase in PET-RAFT polymerization rate with good control, marking a significant leap in the area of photo-controlled polymerization.

Recent Progress in Modular Electrochemical Synthesis of Hydrogen and High-Value-added Chemicals based on Solid Redox Mediator

Electrochemical synthesis of H2 and high-value-added chemicals is an efficient and cost-effective approach that can be powered using renewable electricity. Compared to a conventional electrochemical production system, the modular electrochemical production system (MEPS) based on a solid redox mediator (SRM) can separate the anodic and cathodic reactions in time and space. The MEPS can avoid the use of membranes and formation of useless products, as well as eliminate the mutual dependence of production rates at anode and cathode. The SRM can temporarily store or release electrons and ions to pair with cathodic and anodic reactions, respectively, in MEPS. Designing of SRMs with large charge capacity and good cyclability is of great significance for constructing a high-performance MEPS. This work summarizes the design principles, recent advances in MEPS based on SRM, and application in redox flow cells. Moreover, structure design strategies as well as in situ characterization techniques and theoretical calculations for SRM is also proposed. It is expected to promote the vigorous development of MEPS based on SRM. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of MEPS based on SRM are discussed.

Comparative Analysis of Thiophene-Based Interlayer Cations for Enhanced Performance in 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells

2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites have appeared as a promising prospective material owing to their tunable optoelectronic peculiarities and structural stability. The choice of interlayer cations greatly influences the performance of the 2D RP perovskites. In this study, through theoretical calculations and experimental investigation, we demonstrate the intrinsic and device performance differences between two perovskites based on cations of thiophenemethylamine (TMA) and thiopheneethylamine (TEA). Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it exposes that as compared to (TMA)2PbI4, (TEA)2PbI4 exhibits more pronounced distortion of [PbI6]4- units and possesses a wider band gap and larger effective mass. The experimental results on the TMA- and TEA-based 2D perovskites further show that when TEA is used as the interlayer cation, the crystallization process tends to form more low-n phases, which hinder charge transfer and decrease light harvesting. On the other hand, when TMA is used as the interlayer cation, excessive low-n phases are not observed, and the thin film exhibits excellent quality with significantly improved electron mobility. The (TMA)2(FA)n-1PbnI3n+1 (n = 5) perovskite device shows a remarkable conversion efficiency of 16.56%, much higher than that of TEA-based devices (PCE = 2.58%). Moreover, the unencapsulated devices based on TMA were able to maintain 88% of their initial efficiency even after being exposed to the environment (RT, RH = 30 ± 5%) for a duration of 1080 h. These findings provide important insights into the differences between thiophene-based cations and the selection of organic interlayer cations for 2D RP perovskite solar cells.

Controlling 1D Nanostructures and Handedness by Polar Residue Chirality of Amphiphilic Peptides

Peptide assemblies are promising nanomaterials, with their properties and technological applications being highly hinged on their supramolecular architectures. Here, how changing the chirality of the terminal charged residues of an amphiphilic hexapeptide sequence Ac-I4 K2 -NH2 gives rise to distinct nanostructures and supramolecular handedness is reported. Microscopic imaging and neutron scattering measurements show thin nanofibrils, thick nanofibrils, and wide nanotubes self-assembled from four stereoisomers. Spectroscopic and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses reveal that these isomeric peptides adopt similar anti-parallel β-sheet secondary structures. Further theoretical calculations demonstrate that the chiral alterations of the two C-terminal lysine residues cause the formation of diverse single β-strand conformations, and the final self-assembled nanostructures and handedness are determined by the twisting direction and degree of single β-strands. This work not only lays a useful foundation for the fabrication of diverse peptide nanostructures by manipulating the chirality of specific residues but also provides a framework for predicting the supramolecular structures and handedness of peptide assemblies from single molecule conformations.

Configurational Entropy Strategy Enhanced Structure Stability Achieves Robust Cathode for Aluminum Batteries

Rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs) are an emerging energy storage device owing to the vast Al resources, low cost, and high safety. However, the poor cyclability and inferior reversible capacity of cathode materials have limited the enhancement of RABs performance. Herein, a high configurational entropy strategy is presented to improve the electrochemical properties of RABs for the first time. The high-entropy (Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Mg)3 O4 cathode exhibits an ultra-stable cycling ability (109 mAh g-1 after 3000 cycles), high specific capacity (268 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 ), and rapid ion diffusion. Ex situ characterizations indicate that the operational mechanism of (Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Mg)3 O4 cathode is mainly based on the redox process of Fe, Mn, and Ni. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies make a positive contribution to adjusting the distribution of electronic states, which is crucial for enhancing the reaction kinetics at the electrolyte and cathode interface. These findings not only propose a promising cathode material for RABs, but also provide the first elucidation of the operational mechanism and intrinsic information of high-entropy electrodes in multivalent ion batteries.

Molecularly Imprinted Heterostructure-Based Electrochemosensor for Ultratrace and Precise Detection of 2-Methylisoborneol in Water

Ultratrace 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB, ∼ng/L) in source water is the main odorant in the algae-derived odor episodes, whose accurate on-site detection will have a promising application potential. Due to the chemical inertness of 2-MIB, sensitive and selective detection of 2-MIB remains much challenging. Herein, molecularly imprinted polymer cavities were polymerized on the heterostructure Ti3C2Tx@CuFc-metal-organic framework to selectively capture 2-MIB, where the heterostructure could catalyze the probe redox reaction of [Fe(CN)63-/4-] and amplify the corresponding current signals. The prepared electrochemical sensor showed higher sensitivity on 2-MIB detection than the reported ones. Excellent stability, reusability, and selectivity for 2-MIB detection were also verified. The linear range and limit of detection of our sensor for 2-MIB were optimized to 0.0001-100 μg/L and 30 pg/L, respectively, performing much better than the reported sensors. Comparable performance to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was achieved when the sensor was applied to real water samples with or without 2-MIB standards. Overall, our research has made great progress in the application of an on-site sensor in 2-MIB detection and well advances the development of molecularly imprinted polymer-based electrochemical sensors.

In Situ Vanadium-Deficient Engineering of V2 C MXene: A Pathway to Enhanced Zinc-Ion Batteries

This research examines vanadium-deficient V2 C MXene, a two-dimensional (2D) vanadium carbide with exceptional electrochemical properties for rechargeable zinc-ion batteries. Through a meticulous etching process, a V-deficient, porous architecture with an expansive surface area is achieved, fostering three-dimensional (3D) diffusion channels and boosting zinc ion storage. Analytical techniques like scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and X-ray diffraction confirm the formation of V2 C MXene and its defective porous structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further verifies its transformation from the MAX phase to MXene, noting an increase in V3+ and V4+ states with etching. Cyclic voltammetry reveals superior de-zincation kinetics, evidenced by consistent V3+ /V4+ oxidation peaks at varied scanning rates. Overall, this V-deficient MXene outperforms raw MXenes in capacity and rate, although its capacity diminishes over extended cycling due to structural flaws. Theoretical analyses suggest conductivity rises with vacancies, enhancing 3D ionic diffusion as vacancy size grows. This work sheds light on enhancing V-based MXene structures for optimized zinc-ion storage.

Pd1Cu Single-Atom Alloys for High-Current-Density and Durable NO-to-NH3 Electroreduction

Electrochemical reduction of NO to NH3 (NORR) offers a prospective method for efficient NH3 electrosynthesis. Herein, we first design single-atom Pd-alloyed Cu (Pd1Cu) as an efficient and robust NORR catalyst at industrial-level current densities (>0.2 A cm-2). Operando spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical computations unveil that Pd1 strongly electronically couples its adjacent two Cu atoms (Pd1Cu2) to enhance the NO activation while promoting the NO-to-NH3 protonation energetics and suppressing the competitive hydrogen evolution. Consequently, the flow cell assembled with Pd1Cu exhibits an unprecedented NH3 yield rate of 1341.3 μmol h-1 cm-2 and NH3-Faradaic efficiency of 85.5% at an industrial-level current density of 210.3 mA cm-2, together with an excellent long-term durability for 200 h of electrolysis, representing one of the highest NORR performances on record.

Spectroscopic, Spectrometric and Computational Studies of New Lasalocid Derivatives and Their Complexes with Selected Metal Cations

A series of five esters of lasalocid with neopentyl alcohol (LasNeo), geraniol (LasGeran), 2-ethylhexanol (LasEtHex), eicosanol (LasEico) and vanillyl alcohol (LasVanil) were synthesized and studied by NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS. Then, their complexes with lithium, sodium and potassium cations were obtained and examined using FT-IR. The analysis of the products confirmed the synthesis of new esters with good yields. The newly obtained compounds, as well as their complexes with monovalent cations, were proved to be stabilized by a strong system of intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The PM6 semiempirical calculations provided information on the heat of formation (HOF) and permitted the making of visual representations of the structures of the newly synthesized esters and their complexes with the investigated cations. All the computational outcomes were consistent with the spectroscopic data.

Design and Construction of Carbon-Coated Fe3 O4 /Cr2 O3 Heterostructures Nanoparticles as High-Performance Anodes for Lithium Storage

Transition metal oxides, highly motivated anodes for lithium-ion batteries due to high theoretical capacity, typically afflict by inferior conductivity and significant volume variation. Architecting heterogeneous structures with distinctive interfacial features can effectively regulate the electronic structure to favor electrochemical properties. Herein, an engineered carbon-coated nanosized Fe3 O4 /Cr2 O3 heterostructure with multiple interfaces is synthesized by a facile sol-gel method and subsequent heat treatment. Such ingenious components and structural design deliver rapid Li+ migration and facilitate charge transfer at the heterogeneous interface. Simultaneously, the strong coupling synergistic interactions between Fe3 O4 , Cr2 O3 , and carbon layers establish multiple interface structures and built-in electric fields, which accelerate ion/electron transport and effectively eliminate volume expansion. As a result, the multi-interface heterostructure, as a lithium-ion battery anode, exhibits superior cycling stability maintaining a reversible capacity of 651.2 mAh g-1 for 600 cycles at 2 C. The density functionaltheory calculations not only unravel the electronic structure of the modulation but also illustrate favorable lithium-ion adsorption kinetics. This multi-interface heterostructure strategy offers a pathway for the development of advanced alkali metal-ion batteries.

Slow Magnetization Relaxation in a Family of Triangular {CoIII 2 LnIII } Clusters: The Effect of Diamagnetic CoIII Ions on the LnIII Magnetic Dynamics

The first use of the Schiff base chelate N-naphthalidene-o-aminophenol (naphH2 ) in Co/Ln chemistry has afforded a family of isostructural [CoIII 2 LnIII (OMe)2 (naph)2 (O2 CMe)3 (MeOH)2 ] (Ln=Tb, Dy and Er) complexes, revealing a rare {CoIII 2 Ln(μ3 -OMe)}8+ triangular core composed of two diamagnetic CoIII ions and a 4f-ion with slightly distorted square antiprismatic geometry. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that {Co2 Dy}, and its magnetic diluted analogue {Co2 Dy0.05 Y0.95 }, behave as mononuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with similar energy barriers for the magnetization reversal, Ueff , of ~85-90 K. SMM properties were also detected for {Co2 Er}, with the compound exhibiting a Ueff of 18.7 K under an applied magnetic field of 800 Oe. To interpret the experimental magnetic results, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO and DFT calculations were performed as a means of exploring the single-ion characteristics of LnIII ions and comprehend the role of the diamagnetic CoIII ions in the magnetization relaxation of the three heterometallic compounds.

Governing the emissive properties of 4-aminobiphenyl-2-pyrimidine push-pull systems via the restricted torsion of N,N-disubstituted amino groups

Donor-acceptor-substituted biphenyl derivatives are particularly interesting model compounds, which exhibit intramolecular charge transfer because of the extent of charge transfer between both substituents. The connection of a 4-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl-2-pyrimidinyl) moiety to differently disubstituted amino groups at the biphenyl terminal can offer push-pull compounds with distinctive photophysical properties. Herein, we report a comprehensive study of the influence of the torsion angle of the disubstituted amino group on the emissive properties of two pull-push systems: 4-[4-(4-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)phenyl]-2,6-diphenylpyrimidine (D1) and 4-[4-(4-N,N-diphenylaminophenyl)phenyl]-2,6-diphenylpyrimidine (D2). The torsion angle of the disubstituted amino group, either N,N-dimethyl-amine or N,N-diphenyl-amine, at the biphenyl end governs their emissive properties. A drastic fluorescence quenching occurs in D1 as the solvent polarity increases, whereas D2 maintains its emission independently of the solvent polarity. Theoretical calculations on D1 support the presence of a twisted geometry for the lowest energy, charge-transfer excited state (S1,90), which corresponds to the minimum energy structure in polar solvents and presents a small energy barrier to move from the excited to the ground state, thereby favoring the non-radiative pathway and reducing the fluorescence efficiency. In contrast, this twisted structure is absent in D2 due to the steric hindrance of the phenyl groups attached to the amine group, making the non-radiative decay less favorable. Our findings provide insights into the crucial role of the substituent in the donor moiety of donor-acceptor systems on both the singlet excited state and the intramolecular charge-transfer process.

Discovery of Pyrazole-5-yl-amide Derivatives Containing Cinnamamide Structural Fragments as Potential Succinate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors

To promote the development of novel agricultural succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides, we introduced cinnamamide and nicotinamide structural fragments into the structure of pyrazol-5-yl-amide by carbon chain extension and scaffold hopping, respectively, and synthesized a series of derivatives. The results of the biological activity assays indicated that most of the target compounds exhibited varying degrees of inhibitory activity against the tested fungi. Notably, compounds G22, G28, G34, G38, and G39 exhibited excellent in vitro antifungal activities against Valsa mali with EC50 values of 0.48, 0.86, 0.57, 0.73, and 0.87 mg/L, respectively, and this result was significantly more potent than boscalid (EC50 = 2.80 mg/L) and closer to the specialty control drug tebuconazole (EC50 = 0.30 mg/L). Compounds G22 and G34 also exhibited excellent in vivo protective and curative effects against V. mali at 40 mg/L. The SEM and TEM observations indicated that compounds G22 and G34 may affect normal V. mali mycelial morphology as well as the cellular ultrastructure. Molecular docking analysis results indicated that G22 and boscalid possessed a similar binding mode to that of SDH, and detailed SDH inhibition assays validated the feasibility of the designed compounds as potential SDH inhibitors. Compounds G22 and G3 were selected for theoretical calculations, and the terminal carboxylic acid group of this series of compounds may be a key region influencing the antifungal activity. Furthermore, toxicity tests on Apis mellifera l. revealed that compounds G22 and G34 exhibited low toxicity to A. mellifera l. populations. The above results demonstrated that these series of pyrazole-5-yl-amide derivatives are promising for development as potential low-risk drug-resistance agricultural SDHI fungicides.

(NH4 )2 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ) and K1.03 (NH4 )0.97 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ): Mixed-Valent Polyiodates with Unprecedented I5 O12 - Unit Exhibiting Strong Second-Harmonic Generation Responses and Giant Birefringence

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and birefringence are crucial properties for linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, while it is difficult to further optimize these two key properties by using a single traditional functional building block (FBB) in one compound. Herein, a novel IO4 5- unit is identified, which possesses a square-planar configuration and two stereochemically active lone-pairs (SCALPs). By combining IO4 5- and IO3 - units, the first examples of mixed-valent polyiodates featuring an unprecedented bowl-shaped I5 O12 - polymerized unit, namely (NH4 )2 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ) and K1.03 (NH4 )0.97 (I5 O12 )(IO3 ), are successfully synthesized. Excitingly, both crystals exhibit strong SHG responses (16 × KDP and 19.5 × KDP @1064 nm) as well as giant birefringence (∆nexp  = 0.431 and 0.405 @546 nm). Detailed structure-property analyses reveal that the parallel aligned planar IO4 5- units induce the properly aligned high-density SCALPs, leading to strong SHG response and giant birefringence for both materials. This work not only provides two new potential NLO and birefringent crystals, but also discovers a novel promising FBB (IO4 5- ) for developing high-performance linear and nonlinear optical materials.

Investigation of the Vibrational Characteristics of 6-Isocyano-1-Methyl-1H-Indole: Utilizing the Isonitrile Group as an Infrared Probe

Indole derivatives have garnered considerable attention in the realm of biochemistry due to their multifaceted properties. In this study, we undertake a systematic investigation of the vibrational characteristics of a model indole derivative, 6-isocyano-1-methyl-1H-indole (6ICMI), by employing a combination of FTIR, IR pump-probe spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Our findings demonstrate a strong dependence of the isonitrile stretching frequency of 6ICMI on the polarizability of protic solvents and the density of hydrogen-bond donor groups in the solvent when the isonitrile group is bonded to aromatic groups. Both experimental and theoretical analyses unveil a significant correlation between the isonitrile stretch vibration of 6ICMI and the solvent acceptor number of alcohols. Furthermore, the polarization-controlled infrared pump-probe conducted on 6ICMI in dimethyl sulfoxide provides additional support for the potential use of the isonitrile stretching mode of 6ICMI as an effective infrared probe for local environments.

New Hydrophilic Derivatives of Lasalocid and Their Complexes with Selected Metal Cations

Two new esters of lasalocid, that are more hydrophilic, with glucose (LasGlu) and xylitol (LasX), have been synthesized, and their complexation of monovalent cations has been studied by various spectrometric and spectroscopic methods, such as ESI mass spectrometry, ¹H, ¹³C NMR and FT-IR. Analyses of the results confirmed the synthesis of new esters with good yields. In order to carry out further studies, it was necessary to purify them using "flash" liquid chromatography. It was confirmed that the newly obtained molecules, as well as their complexes with lithium, sodium and potassium cations, were stabilized by a strong system of intramolecular hydrogen bonds. It was found that the hydroxyl groups of esters derived from xylitol and glucose were also involved in the complexation of cations. The results of the PM6 semiempirical calculations permitted determination of the heat of formation (HOF), and visualization of the structure of the new esters and their complexes with the cations studied. All computation results are in agreement with the spectroscopic data.

Structural and Theoretical Study of Copper(II)-5-fluoro Uracil Acetate Coordination Compounds: Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation as Possible Humidity Sensor

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of seven different copper(II) coordination compounds, as well as the formation of a protonated ligand involving all compounds from the same reaction. Their synthesis required hydrothermal conditions, causing the partial in situ transformation of 5-fluoro uracil-1-acetic acid (5-FUA) into an oxalate ion (ox), as well as the protonation of the 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy) ligand through a catalytic process resulting from the presence of Cu(II) within the reaction. These initial conditions allowed obtaining the new coordination compounds [Cu₂(5-FUA)₂(ox)(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP2), [Cu(5-FUA)₂(H₂O)(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP3), as well as the ionic pair [(H₂bipy)⁺² 2NO₃^-] (1). The mother liquor evolved rapidly at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, due to the change in concentration of the initial reagents and the presence of the new chemical species generated in the reaction process, yielding CPs [Cu(5-FUA)₂(bipy)]_n·3.5n H₂O, [Cu₃(ox)₃(bipy)₄]_n and [Cu(ox)(bipy)]_n. The molecular compound [Cu(5-FUA)₂(H₂O)₄]·4H₂O (more thermodynamically stable) ended up in the mother liquor after filtration at longer reaction times at 25 °C and 1 atm., cohabiting in the medium with the other crystalline solids in different proportions. In addition, the evaporation of H₂O caused the single-crystal to single-crystal transformation (SCSC) of [Cu(5-FUA)₂(H₂O)(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP3) into [Cu(5-FUA)₂(bipy)]_n·2n H₂O (CP4). A theoretical study was performed to analyze the thermodynamic stability of the phases. The observed SCSC transformation also involved a perceptible color change, highlighting this compound as a possible water sensor.

Defective TiO2- x for High-Performance Electrocatalytic NO Reduction toward Ambient NH3 Production

Synthesis of green ammonia (NH₃ ) via electrolysis of nitric oxide (NO) is extraordinarily sustainable, but multielectron/proton-involved hydrogenation steps as well as low concentrations of NO can lead to poor activities and selectivities of electrocatalysts. Herein, it is reported that oxygen-defective TiO₂ nanoarray supported on Ti plate (TiO_{2- x} /TP) behaves as an efficient catalyst for NO reduction to NH₃ . In 0.2 m phosphate-buffered electrolyte, such TiO_{2- x} /TP shows competitive electrocatalytic NH₃ synthesis activity with a maximum NH₃ yield of 1233.2 µg h^-1  cm^-2 and Faradaic efficiency of 92.5%. Density functional theory calculations further thermodynamically faster NO deoxygenation and protonation processes on TiO_{2- x} (101) compared to perfect TiO₂ (101). And the low energy barrier of 0.7 eV on TiO_{2- x} (101) for the potential-determining step further highlights the greatly improved intrinsic activity. In addition, a Zn-NO battery is fabricated with TiO_{2- x} /TP and Zn plate to obtain an NH₃ yield of 241.7 µg h^-1  cm^-2 while providing a peak power density of 0.84 mW cm^-2 .

Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnet Behavior in Nickel(II) Complexes with Functionalized 2,2':6'-2″-Terpyridine Derivatives: Preparation and Magneto-Structural Study

Two mononuclear nickel(II) complexes of the formula [Ni(terpyCOOH)₂](ClO₄)₂∙4H₂O (1) and [Ni(terpyepy)₂](ClO₄)₂ MeOH (2) [terpyCOOH = 4'-carboxyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine and terpyepy = 4'-[(2-pyridin-4-yl)ethynyl]-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine] have been prepared and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are mononuclear compounds, where the nickel(II) ions are six-coordinate by the six nitrogen atoms from two tridentate terpy moieties. The mean values of the equatorial Ni-N bond distances [2.11(1) and 2.12(1) Å for Ni(1) at 1 and 2, respectively, are somewhat longer than the axial ones [2.008(6) and 2.003(6) Å (1)/2.000(1) and 1.999(1) Å (2)]. The values of the shortest intermolecular nickel-nickel separation are 9.422(1) (1) and 8.901(1) Å (2). Variable-temperature (1.9-200 K) direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 reveal a Curie law behavior in the high-temperature range, which corresponds to magnetically isolated spin triplets, the downturn of the χ_MT product at lower temperatures being due to zero-field splitting effects (D). Values of D equal to -6.0 (1) and -4.7 cm^-1 (2) were obtained through the joint analysis of the magnetic susceptibility data and the field dependence of the magnetization. These results from magnetometry were supported by theoretical calculations. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 and 2 in the temperature range 2.0-5.5 K show the occurrence of incipient out-phase signals under applied dc fields, a phenomenon that is characteristic of field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior, which herein concerns the 2 mononuclear nickel(II) complexes. This slow relaxation of the magnetization in 1 and 2 has its origin in the axial compression of the octahedral surrounding at their nickel(II) ions that leads to negative values of D. A combination of an Orbach and a direct mechanism accounts for the field-dependent relation phenomena in 1 and 2.

Robust and Highly Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Production from Hydrazine-Assisted Water Electrolysis Enabled by the Metal-Support Interaction of Ru/C Composites

Hydrazine oxidation-assisted water electrolysis provides a promising way for the energy-efficient electrochemical hydrogen (H₂) and synchronous decomposition of hydrazine-rich wastewater, but the development of highly active catalysts still remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate the robust and highly active Ru nanoparticles supported on the hollow N-doped carbon microtube (denoted as Ru NPs/H-NCMT) composite structure as HER and HzOR bifunctional electrocatalysts. Thanks to such unique hierarchical architectures, the as-synthesized Ru NPs/H-NCMTs exhibit prominent electrocatalytic activity in the alkaline condition, which needs a low overpotential of 29 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for HER and an ultrasmall working potential of -0.06 V (vs RHE) to attain the same current density for HzOR. In addition, assembling a two-electrode hybrid electrolyzer using as-prepared Ru NPs/H-NCMT catalysts shows a small cell voltage of mere 0.108 V at 100 mA cm^-2, as well as the remarkable long-term stability. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the Ru NPs serve as the active sites for both the HER and HzOR in the nanocomposite, which facilitates the adsorption of H atoms and hydrazine dehydrogenation kinetics, thus enhancing the performances of HER and HzOR. This work paves a novel avenue to develop efficient and stable electrocatalysts toward HER and HzOR that promises energy-saving hybrid water electrolysis electrochemical H₂ production.

Design of Gradient Ti Reconstituted Fe2O3 Anodes with Enhanced Lithium Affinity Modulated Electronic Structures: First-Principles Calculations and Experiment Verification

High-performance conversion transition metal oxides are strong candidates for advanced anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the poor intrinsic conductivity and the large volume changes during battery operation are important constraints to its practical application. The heterogeneous atom doping strategy is an important way to modulate the electronic structure and surface states of the host materials. Herein, theoretical calculations reveal that heteroatomic Ti doping and its ionic or electronic compensation mechanisms can well modulate the electronic structure of Fe₂O₃ and change the surface Li-ion affinity. A Ti concentration gradient modification strategy for Fe₂O₃ is proposed to construct high-performance electrode materials. As a Li-ion battery anode, Ti concentration gradient-doped Fe₂O₃ achieves excellent long-cycle stability, with a reversible capacity of 1001.9 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 for 1200 cycles, and even maintains a reversible specific capacity compared to the theoretical capacity of commercial graphite electrodes at 2 A g^-1 for 2000 cycles. This combination of theoretical calculations and experiments offers ways to intelligently design and develop alkali metal ion batteries.

Rational Construction of Heterostructured Cu3 P@TiO2 Nanoarray for High-Efficiency Electrochemical Nitrite Reduction to Ammonia

Electroreduction of nitrite (NO₂ ^- ) to valuable ammonia (NH₃ ) offers a sustainable and green approach for NH₃ synthesis. Here, a Cu₃ P@TiO₂ heterostructure is rationally constructed as an active catalyst for selective NO₂ ^- -to-NH₃ electroreduction, with rich nanosized Cu₃ P anchored on a TiO₂ nanoribbon array on Ti plate (Cu₃ P@TiO₂ /TP). When performed in the 0.1 m NaOH with 0.1 m NaNO₂ , the Cu₃ P@TiO₂ /TP electrode obtains a large NH₃ yield of 1583.4 µmol h^-1  cm^-2 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 97.1%. More importantly, Cu₃ P@TiO₂ /TP also delivers remarkable long-term stability for 50 h electrolysis. Theoretical calculations indicate that intermediate adsorption/conversion processes on Cu₃ P@TiO₂ interfaces are synergistically optimized, substantially facilitating the conversion of NO₂ ^- -to-NH₃ .

Neglected but Efficient Electron Utilization Driven by Biochar-Coactivated Phenols and Peroxydisulfate: Polyphenol Accumulation Rather than Mineralization

We report an unrecognized but efficient nonradical mechanism in biochar-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) systems. Combining a newly developed fluorescence trapper of reactive oxygen species with steady-state concentration calculations, we showed that raising pyrolysis temperatures of biochar (BC) from 400 to 800 °C remarkably enhanced trichlorophenol degradation but inhibited the catalytic production of radicals (SO₄^•- and ^•OH) in water and soil, thereby switching a radical-based activation into an electron-transfer-dominated nonradical pathway (contribution increased from 12.9 to 76.9%). Distinct from previously reported PDS* complex-determined oxidation, in situ Raman and electrochemical results of this study demonstrated that the simultaneous activation of phenols and PDS on the biochar surface triggers the potential difference-driven electron transfer. The formed phenoxy radicals subsequently undergo coupling and polymerization reactions to generate dimeric and oligomeric intermediates, which are eventually accumulated on the biochar surface and removed. Such a unique nonmineralizing oxidation achieved an ultrahigh electron utilization efficiency (e_phenols/e_PDS) of 182%. Through biochar molecular modeling and theoretical calculations, we highlighted the critical role of graphitic domains rather than redox-active moieties in lowering band-gap energy to facilitate electron transfer. Our work provides insights into outstanding contradictions and controversies related to nonradical oxidation and inspiration for more oxidant-saving remediation technologies.

Conductive Polymer Coated Layered Double Hydroxide as a Novel Sulfur Reservoir for Flexible Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur battery (LSB) is widely regarded as the most promising next-generation energy storage system owing to its high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, the practical application of LSBs is mainly hampered by the low electronic conductivity of the sulfur cathode and the notorious "shuttle effect", which lead to high voltage polarization, severe over-charge behavior, and rapid capacity decay. To address these issues, a novel sulfur reservoir is synthesized by coating polypyrrole (PPy) thin film on hollow layered double hydroxide (LDH) (PPy@LDH). After compositing with sulfur, such PPy@LDH-S cathode shows a multi-functional effect to reserve lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). In addition, the unique architecture provides sufficient inner space to encapsulate the volume expansion and enhances the reaction kinetics of sulfur-based redox chemistry. Theoretical calculations have illustrated that the PPy@LDH has shown stronger chemical adsorption capability for LiPSs than those of porous carbon and LDH, preventing the shuttling of LiPSs and enhancing the nucleation affinity of liquid-solid conversion. As a result, the PPy@LDH-S electrode delivers a stable cycling performance and a superior rate capability. Flexible battery has demonstrated this PPy@LDH-S electrode can work properly with treatments of bending, folding, and even twisting, paving the way for wearable devices and flexible electronics.

Regulation of Impedance Matching and Dielectric Loss Properties of N-Doped Carbon Hollow Nanospheres Modified With Atomically Dispersed Cobalt Sites for Microwave Energy Attenuation

The rational design of lightweight, broad-band, and high-performance microwave absorbers is urgently required for addressing electromagnetic pollution issue. Metal single atoms (M-SAs) absorbers receive considerable interest in the field of microwave absorption due to the unique electronic structures of M-SAs. However, the simultaneous engineering of the morphology and electronic structure of M-SAs based absorbers remains challenging. Herein, a template-assisted method is utilized to fabricate isolated Co-SAs on N-doped hollow carbon spheres (NHCS@Co-SAs) for high-performance microwave absorption. The combination of atomically dispersed Co sites and hollow supports endows NHCS@Co-SAs with excellent microwave absorption properties. Typically, at an ultralow filler content of 8 wt%, the minimum reflection loss and effective absorption bandwidth of the NHCS@Co-SAs are up to -44.96 dB and 5.25 GHz, respectively, while the absorbing thickness is only 2 mm. Theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that the impedance matching characteristic and dielectric loss of the NHCSs can be tuned via the introduction of M-SAs, which are responsible for the excellent microwave absorption properties of NHCS@Co-SAs. This work provides an atomic-level insight into the relationship between the electronic states of absorbers and their microwave absorption properties for developing advanced microwave absorbers.

Rod-Like Nanostructured Cu-Co Spinel with Rich Oxygen Vacancies for Efficient Electrocatalytic Dechlorination

Dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂) hydrodechlorination to methane (CH₄) is a promising approach to remove the halogenated contaminants and generate clean energy. In this work, rod-like nanostructured CuCo₂O₄ spinels with rich oxygen vacancies are designed for highly efficient electrochemical reduction dechlorination of dichloromethane. Microscopy characterizations revealed that the special rod-like nanostructure and rich oxygen vacancies can efficiently enhance surface area, electronic/ionic transport, and expose more active sites. The experimental tests demonstrated that CuCo₂O₄-3 with rod-like nanostructures outperformed other morphology of CuCo₂O₄ spinel nanostructures in catalytic activity and product selectivity. The highest methane production of 148.84 μmol in 4 h with a Faradaic efficiency of 21.61% at -2.94 V (vs SCE) is shown. Furthermore, the density function theory proved oxygen vacancies significantly decreased the energy barrier to promote the catalyst in the reaction and O_v-Cu was the main active site in dichloromethane hydrodechlorination. This work explores a promising way to synthesize the highly efficient electrocatalysts, which may be an effective catalyst for dichloromethane hydrodechlorination to methane.

Study of the Counter Cation Effects on the Supramolecular Structure and Electronic Properties of a Dianionic Oxamate-Based {NiII2} Helicate

Herein, we describe the synthesis, crystal structure, and electronic properties of {[K₂(dmso)(H₂O)₅][Ni₂(H₂mpba)₃]·dmso·2H₂O}_n (1) and [Ni(H₂O)₆][Ni₂(H₂mpba)₃]·3CH₃OH·4H₂O (2) [dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide; CH₃OH = methanol; and H₄mpba = 1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic acid)] bearing the [Ni₂(H₂mpba)₃]^2- helicate, hereafter referred to as {Ni^II₂}. SHAPE software calculations indicate that the coordination geometry of all the Ni^II atoms in 1 and 2 is a distorted octahedron (O_h) whereas the coordination environments for K1 and K2 atoms in 1 are Snub disphenoid J84 (D_2d) and distorted octahedron (O_h), respectively. The {Ni^II₂} helicate in 1 is connected by K⁺ counter cations yielding a 2D coordination network with sql topology. In contrast to 1, the electroneutrality of the triple-stranded [Ni₂(H₂mpba)₃] ^2- dinuclear motif in 2 is achieved by a [Ni(H₂O)₆]²⁺ complex cation, where the three neighboring {Ni^II₂} units interact in a supramolecular fashion through four R₂²(10) homosynthons yielding a 2D array. Voltammetric measurements reveal that both compounds are redox active (with the Ni^II/Ni^I pair being mediated by OH^- ions) but with differences in formal potentials that reflect changes in the energy levels of molecular orbitals. The Ni^II ions from the helicate and the counter-ion (complex cation) in 2 can be reversibly reduced, resulting in the highest faradaic current intensities. The redox reactions in 1 also occur in an alkaline medium but at higher formal potentials. The connection of the helicate with the K⁺ counter cation has an impact on the energy levels of the molecular orbitals; this experimental behavior was further supported by X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) experiments and computational calculations.

Organogermanium Analogues of Alkenes, Alkynes, 1,3-Dienes, Allenes, and Vinylidenes

In this review, the latest achievements in the field of multiply bonded organogermanium derivatives, mostly reported within the last two decades, are presented. The isolable Ge-containing analogues of alkenes, alkynes, 1,3-dienes, allenes, and vinylidenes are discussed, and for each class of unsaturated organogermanium compounds, the most representative examples are given. The synthetic approaches toward homonuclear multiply bonded combinations solely consisting of germanium atoms, and their heteronuclear variants containing germanium and other group 14 elements, both acyclic and cyclic, are discussed. The peculiar structural features and nonclassical bonding nature of the abovementioned compounds are discussed based on their spectroscopic and structural characteristics, in particular their crystallographic parameters (double bond length, trans-bending at the doubly bonded centers, and twisting about the double bond). The prospects for the practical use of the title compounds in synthetic and catalytic fields are also briefly discussed.

Ta3N5 Nanobelt-Loaded Ru Nanoparticle Hybrids' Electrocatalysis for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Media

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution is a highly efficient way to produce hydrogen, but since it is limited by high-cost electrocatalysts, the preparation of high-efficiency electrocatalysts with fewer or free noble metals is important. Here, Ta₃N₅ nanobelt (NB)-loaded Ru nanoparticle (NP) hybrids with various ratios, including 1~10 wt% Ru/Ta₃N₅, are constructed to electrocatalyze water splitting for a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The results show that 5 wt% Ru/Ta₃N₅ NBs have good HER properties with an overpotential of 64.6 mV, a Tafel slope of 84.92 mV/dec at 10 mA/cm² in 1 M of KOH solution, and good stability. The overpotential of the HER is lower than that of Pt/C (20 wt%) at current densities of 26.3 mA/cm² or more. The morphologies and structures of the materials are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, respectively. X-ray photoelectron energy spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrates that a good HER performance is generated by the synergistic effect and electronic transfer of Ru to Ta₃N₅. Our electrochemical analyses and theoretical calculations indicate that Ru/Ta₃N₅ interfaces play an important role as real active sites.

Synthesis of [60]Fullerene Hybrids Endowed with Steroids and Monosaccharides: Theoretical Underpinning as Promising anti-SARS-CoV-2 Agents

Cyclopropanation reactions between C60 and different malonates decorated with monosaccharides and steroids using the Bingel-Hirsch methodology have allowed the obtention of a new family of hybrid compounds in good yields. A complete set of instrumental techniques has allowed us to fully characterize the hybrid derivatives and to determine the chemical structure of monocycloadducts. Besides, the proposed structures were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, which evidenced the exclusive reductive pattern of fullerene Bingel-type monoadducts. Theoretical calculations at the DFT-D3(BJ)/PBE 6-311G(d,p) level of the synthesized conjugates predict the most stable conformation and determine the factors that control the hybrid molecules' geometry. Some parameters such as polarity, lipophilicity, polar surface area, hydrophilicity index, and solvent-accessible surface area were also estimated, predicting its potential permeability and capability as cell membrane penetrators. Additionally, a molecular docking simulation has been carried out using the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 (Mpro) as the receptor, thus paving the way to study the potential application of these hybrids in biomedicine.

Theoretical Evaluation of Oleocanthal Reactive Centers

BACKGROUND

Decarboxymethyl ligstroside aglycone (Oleocanthal) is an essential component of olive oil. It is therefore interesting to study its metabolism in the human body. In order to find the best possible starting point for this metabolism, a theoretical study was carried out using DFT calculations and docking studies.

METHODS

The DFT, B3LYP/6-311++G** and the PCM solvation model calculations were used to study the initial process of Oleocanthal metabolism by the CYP1A2 enzyme. Structures of radicals formed by homolytic dissociation of hydrogen atoms from the Oleocanthal structure were obtained and their properties were studied. Several parameters such as HOMO and LUMO energy gaps, Bond Dissociation Energy (BDE), hardness, and spin density of possible Oleocanthal radicals were taken into account. Docking of Oleocanthal into an enzyme binding pocket was also performed to locate the most probably metabolic site. Detailed analysis of the theoretical results allows the determination of the most likely reaction sites in Oleocanthal. The mode of binding of Oleocanthal to the CYP1A2 enzyme was also predicted.

RESULTS

The results of the molecular docking studies are in agreement with the calculated quantum parameters. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental data available in the scientific literature. A high correlation between theoretical calculations and experimental data was observed. The most likely site of Oleocanthal metabolism was identified.

CONCLUSION

The results of our research support the usefulness of theoretical calculations in predicting metabolic pathways.

Cage-Based Covalent Organic Framework for the Effective and Efficient Removal of Malachite Green from Wastewater

A cage-covalent organic framework (COF)-TP {T = bis(tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine); P = piperazine}, a novel two-dimensional covalent organic skeleton substituted with a nucleophilic cyanuric chloride analogue, was synthesized by a simple polymerization process. Cage-COF-TP is advantageous owing to its good structural order, permanent porosity, and low preparation cost. This skeleton was employed as a cost-effective adsorbent for the intermittent adsorption of an organic dye from aqueous solutions. Adsorption experiments were carried out at different initial dye concentrations, contact times, and solution pH. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model, and the results of thermodynamic studies were consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. The high degree of matching between the size and shape of malachite green (MG) and the shrunken channels present in Cage-COF-TP were responsible for the enhanced adsorption ability of this material. Furthermore, theoretical calculations indicated that the high adsorption of the studied adsorbent can be attributed to the presence of nitrogen-rich triazine units in the Cage-COF-TP, which are expected to strengthen its affinity to guest molecules. The obtained results showed that the developed adsorbent is an efficient adsorbent that is theoretically capable of stimulating the removal of ∼2000 mg/g MG from wastewater at ambient temperature. This study will therefore be expected to promote the development of new functional materials based on COFs.

The Peroxymonocarbonate Anion HCO4- as an Effective Oxidant in the Gas Phase: A Mass Spectrometric and Theoretical Study on the Reaction with SO2

The peroxymonocarbonate anion, HCO₄^-, the covalent adduct between the carbon dioxide and hydrogen peroxide anion, effectively reacts with SO₂ in the gas phase following three oxidative routes. Mass spectrometric and electronic structure calculations show that sulphur dioxide is oxidised through a common intermediate to the hydrogen sulphate anion, sulphur trioxide, and sulphur trioxide anion as primary products through formal HO₂^-, oxygen atom, and oxygen ion transfers. The hydrogen sulphite anion is also formed as a secondary product from the oxygen atom transfer path. The uncommon nucleophilic behaviour of HCO₄^- is disclosed by the Lewis acidic properties of SO₂, an amphiphilic molecule that forms intermediates with characteristic and diagnostic geometries with peroxymonocarbonate.

Evaluation of Design Method for Highway Adjacent Tunnel and Exit Connection Section Length Based on Entropy Method

With the continuous construction of transportation infrastructure, intersection nodes have been increasing rapidly, bringing growing numbers of tunnel- and exit-adjacent sections (TEAS) in mountain expressways in China. With the complex variation in the surrounding environment, drivers always face congestion and confusion on tunnel and the exit connecting sections (TECS) without adequate length, meanwhile excessively long TECS create detours. To better provide a sustainable design strategy for TEAS, based on a certain section of expressway in Shaanxi, China, this paper establishes a theoretical calculation model through analysis. The characteristics of traffic flow and drivers' light adaptation at tunnel exit are obtained through data collection and driving tests, and the length requirements of the tunnel and exit connecting sections (TECS) are discussed. A VISSIM microscopic simulation model is also built under various design schemes and entropy-based multi-attribute decision making (EBMADM) is used to objectively calculate the weights of the four selected evaluation indexes. Then, the design schemes of the TECS with different lengths have been comprehensively evaluated. The results show the match between the evaluation results of EBMADM with theoretical calculations under existing traffic conditions, which proves the rationality of EBMADM in such problems. For more cases, the results of the EBMADM evaluation show a positive correlation between the length of TECS for the best performing design scheme with traffic volume and diverging ratio.

Some Theoretical and Experimental Evidence for Particularities of the Siloxane Bond

The specific features of the siloxane bond unify the compounds based on it into a class with its own chemistry and unique combinations of chemical and physical properties. An illustration of their chemical peculiarity is the behavior of 1,3-bis(2-aminoethylaminomethyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (AEAMDS) in the reaction with carbonyl compounds and metal salts, by which we obtain the metal complexes of the corresponding Schiff bases formed in situ. Depending on the reaction conditions, the fragmentation of this compound takes place at the siloxane bond, but, in most cases, it is in the organic moieties in the β position with respect to the silicon atom. The main compounds that were formed based on the moieties resulting from the splitting of this diamine were isolated and characterized from a structural point of view. Depending on the presence or not of the metal salt in the reaction mixture, these are metal complexes with organic ligands (either dangling or not dangling silanol tails), or organic compounds. Through theoretical calculations, electrons that appear in the structure of the siloxane bond in different contexts and that lead to such fragmentations have been assessed.

Phase-Dependent Energy Storage Performance of the NixSey Polymorphs for Supercapacitor-Battery Hybrid Devices

Transition-metal chalcogenides have emerged as a promising class of materials for energy storage applications due to their earth abundance, high theoretical capacity, and high electrical conductivity. Herein, we introduce a facile and one-pot electrodeposition method to prepare high-performance nickel selenide Ni_xSe_y (0.5 ≤ x/y ≤ 1.5) nanostructures (specific capacity = 180.3 mA h g^-1 at 1 A g^-1). The as-synthesized nickel selenide (NS) nanostructure is however converted to other polymorphs of nickel selenide including orthorhombic NiSe₂, trigonal Ni₃Se₂, hexagonal NiSe, and orthorhombic Ni₆Se₅ over cycling. Interestingly, NiSe₂ and Ni₃Se₂ polymorphs that display a more metallic character and superior energy storage performance are the predominant phases after a few hundred cycles. We fabricated a hybrid device using activated carbon (AC) as a supercapacitor-type negative electrode and NS as a high-rate battery-type positive electrode (AC||NS). This hybrid device provides a high specific energy of 71 W h kg^-1, an excellent specific power of up to 31 400 W kg^-1, and exceptional cycling stability (80% retention of the initial capacity after 20 000 cycles). The higher energy storage performance of the device is a result of the development of high-performance NiSe₂ and Ni₃Se₂ polymorphs. Moreover, the reduction of the critical dimension of the NS particles to the nanoscale partially induces an extrinsic pseudocapacitive behavior that improves the rate capability and durability of the device. We also explored the origin of the superior energy storage performance of the NS polymorphs using density functional theory calculations in terms of the computed density of states around the Fermi level, electrical conductivity, and quantum capacitance that follows the trend NiSe₂ > Ni₃Se₂ > NiSe > Ni₆Se₅. The present study thus provides an appealing approach for tailoring the phase composition of NS as an alternative to the commonly used templated synthesis methods.

Alloying Iron into Palladium Nanoparticles for an Efficient Catalyst in Acetylene Dicarbonylation

Motivated by the prominent catalytic performance and durability of nanoalloy catalysts, the Pd-based bimetallic nanoalloy catalysts were prepared using an aqueous reduction method. The Fe-Pd bimetallic nanoalloy catalyst (nano-Fe/Pd) demonstrated 98.4% yield and 99.7% selectivity for the unsaturated 1,4-dicarboxylic acid diesters. Moreover, the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis shows that the Pd leaching of the catalyst can be effectively suppressed by alloying Fe atoms into the Pd crystal lattice for acetylene dicarbonylation. The detailed catalyst structure and morphology characterization demonstrate that introducing Fe into the Pd nanoparticles tunes the electronic-geometrical properties of the catalyst. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electrons of Fe transfer to Pd in the nano-Fe/Pd catalyst, enhancing activation of the C≡C bond in acetylene and weakening CO absorption capacity on catalyst surfaces. Alloying Fe into the Pd nanocatalyst effectively inhibits active metal leaching and improves catalyst activity and stability under high-pressure CO reactions.

Theoretical Progress of 2D Six-Membered-Ring Inorganic Materials as Anodes for Non-Lithium-Ion Batteries

The use and storage of renewable and clean energy has become an important trend due to resource depletion, environmental pollution, and the rising price of refined fossil fuels. Confined by the limited resource and uneven distribution of lithium, non-lithium-ion batteries have become a new focus for energy storage. The six-membered-ring (SMR) is a common structural unit for numerous material systems. 2D SMR inorganic materials have unique advantages in the field of non-lithium energy storage, such as fast electrochemical reactions, abundant active sites and adjustable band gap. First-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) can provide a basic understanding of materials at the atomic-level and establish the relationship between SMR structural units and electrochemical energy storage. In this review, the theoretical progress of 2D SMR inorganic materials in the field of non-lithium-ion batteries in recent years is discussed to summarize the common relationship among 2D SMR non-lithium energy storage anodes. Finally, the existing challenges are analyzed and potential solutions are proposed.

Multistage Electron Distribution Engineering of Iridium Oxide by Codoping W and Sn for Enhanced Acidic Water Oxidation Electrocatalysis

Developing efficient and robust anodic electrocatalysts to implement the proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer is critical for hydrogen generation. Nevertheless, the only known applicable anode catalyst IrO_x in PEM electrolyzers still requires high overpotential due to the weak binding energy between oxygen intermediates and active sites, limiting its wide applications. Herein, a ternary Ir_0.7 W_0.2 Sn_0.1 O_x nanocatalyst synthesized through a sol-gel strategy, exhibits a low overpotential of 236 mV (10 mA cm^-2 _geo ) for thoxygen evolution reaction (OER), accompanied with robust durability over 220 h at 1 A cm^-2 _geo in 0.5 m H₂ SO₄ . Moreover, the optimized Ir_0.7 W_0.2 Sn_0.1 O_x delivers a prominent mass activity of 722.7 A g^-1 _Ir at 1.53 V (vs RHE), which is around 34 times higher compared with that of IrO_x . The mircrostructural analyses reveal that codoping of W and Sn stabilizes Ir with a valence state lower than 4+ through multistage charge redistribution, avoiding the overoxidation of Ir above 1.6 V versus RHE and enhancing the acidic OER performance. Additionally, density functional theory calculations reveal that codoping of W and Sn moves the d band center of Ir to the Fermi level, thus enhancing the binding energies of oxygen intermediates with Ir sites and decreasing the energy barrier toward acidic OER.

Theoretical Understanding of Polar Topological Phase Transitions in Functional Oxide Heterostructures: A Review

The exotic topological phase is attracting considerable attention in condensed matter physics and materials science over the past few decades due to intriguing physical insights. As a combination of "topology" and "ferroelectricity," the ferroelectric (polar) topological structures are a fertile playground for emergent phenomena and functionalities with various potential applications. Herein, the review starts with the universal concept of the polar topological phase and goes on to briefly discuss the important role of computational tools such as phase-field simulations in designing polar topological phases in oxide heterostructures. In particular, the history of the development of phase-field simulations for ferroelectric oxide heterostructures is highlighted. Then, the current research progress of polar topological phases and their emergent phenomena in ferroelectric functional oxide heterostructures is reviewed from a theoretical perspective, including the topological polar structures, the establishment of phase diagrams, their switching kinetics and interconnections, phonon dynamics, and various macroscopic properties. Finally, this review offers a perspective on the future directions for the discovery of novel topological phases in other ferroelectric systems and device design for next-generation electronic device applications.

High-Efficiency Electrosynthesis of Ammonia with Selective Reduction of Nitrate in Neutral Media Enabled by Self-Supported Mn2CoO4 Nanoarray

Ambient ammonia synthesis by electroreduction of nitrate (NO3-) provides us a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. In this work, Mn2CoO4 nanoarray grown on carbon cloth (Mn2CoO4/CC) serves as a superior electrocatalyst for efficient NH3 synthesis by selective reduction of NO3-. When operated in 0.1 M PBS with 0.1 M NaNO3, Mn2CoO4/CC reaches a high Faraday efficiency of 98.6% and a large NH3 yield up to 11.19 mg/h/cm2. Moreover, it exhibits excellent electrocatalytic stability. Theory calculations show that the Mn2CoO4 surface has strong interaction with NO3-, which can effectively inhibit the occurrence of hydrogen evolution, beneficial for NO3--to-NH3 conversion.

Ru- and Cl-Codoped Li3 V2 (PO4 )3 with Enhanced Performance for Lithium-Ion Batteries in a Wide Temperature Range

Li₃ V₂ (PO₄ )₃ (LVP) is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, especially when used in a wide temperature range, due to its high intrinsic ionic mobility and theoretical capacity. Herein, Ru- and Cl-codoped Li₃ V₂ (PO₄ )₃ (LVP-Ru_x -Cl_{3 x} ) coated with/without a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) layer are synthesized. Among them, the optimized sample (LVP-Ru_0.05 -Cl_0.15 @NC) delivers remarkable performances at both room temperature and extreme temperatures (-40, 25, and 60 °C), indicating temperature adaptability. It achieves intriguing capacities (49 mAh g^-1 at -40 °C, 128 mAh g^-1 at 25 °C, and 123 mAh g^-1 at 60 °C, all at 0.5 C), long cycle life (94% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 25 °C and 5 C), and high-rate capabilities (up to 20 C). The structural evolution features and capacity loss mechanisms of LVP-Ru_0.05 -Cl_0.15 @NC are further investigated using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) at different temperatures (-10, 25, and 60 °C) during redox reactions. Theoretical calculations elucidate that Ru- and Cl-codoping can greatly improve the intrinsic diffusion coefficient of LVP by reducing its bandgap energy and lowering the energy barrier of lithium-ion diffusion. In "all-weather" conditions, the dual-element co-doping strategy is critical for increasing electrochemical performance.

Modeling of the Structure and Forecasting Properties of Dihydroquercetin Derivatives

AIMS

To study new chemical compounds with the potential cure proper, and to develop modifications of the preferred structure of dihydroquercetin.

BACKGROUND

Producing of the new drugs needs the study of the cure properties of the chemical composes first of all, and computer modeling can make this process more informative and easily.

OBJECTIVE

Computer projection of the chemical compounds potential cure properties.

METHODS

The reactivity of the studied models was evaluated by comparing the energies of the boundary molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), as well as the difference in their values. The reaction center of the model molecules was determined via the analysis of the charge characteristics on atoms in each of them.

RESULTS

A theoretical model of new chemical compounds with the potential properties of drugs was substantiated and modifications of the preferred structure of dihydroquercetin have been developed. The concept of new compounds has been expanded and opportunities for the modification of compounds with high pharmacological activity have been discussed. Using the AM1, PM3, RM1 methods spatial characteristics were calculated. The results of quantum-chemical studies of model derivatives of dihydroquercetin via the RM1 method were carried out.

CONCLUSIONS

Calculation of the enthalpies of formation of model molecules allowed evaluating their thermodynamic stability. An analysis of the electric dipole moments made a possibility determining the preferred (polar) nature of the solvents for the studied model molecular systems.

Anion Binding by Fluorescent Ureido-Hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arene Receptors: An NMR, Absorption and Emission Spectroscopic Study

Fluorescent receptors (4a-4c) based on (thio)ureido-functionalized hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arenes were synthesised and obtained in the partial cone conformation in solution. Naphthyl or pyrenyl fluorogenic units were introduced at the lower rim of the calixarene skeleton via a butyl spacer. The binding of biologically and environmentally relevant anions was studied with NMR, UV-vis absorption, and fluorescence titrations. Fluorescence of the pyrenyl receptor 4c displays both monomer and excimer fluorescence. The thermodynamics of complexation was determined in acetonitrile and was entropy-driven. Computational studies were also performed to bring further insight into the binding process. The data showed that association constants increase with the anion basicity, and AcO-, BzO- and F- were the best bound anions for all receptors. Pyrenylurea 4c is a slightly better receptor than naphthylurea 4a, and both are more efficient than naphthyl thiourea 4b. In addition, ureas 4a and 4c were also tested as ditopic receptors in the recognition of alkylammonium salts.

Theoretical Mechanism on the Cellulose Regeneration from a Cellulose/EmimOAc Mixture in Anti-Solvents

The experiments on cellulose dissolution/regeneration have made some achievements to some extent, but the mechanism of cellulose regeneration in ionic liquids (ILs) and anti-solvent mixtures remains elusive. In this work, the cellulose regeneration mechanism in different anti-solvents, and at different temperatures and concentrations, has been studied with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The IL considered is 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimOAc). In addition, to investigate the microcosmic effects of ILs and anti-solvents, EmimOAc-nH₂O (n = 0–6) clusters have been optimized by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. It can be found that water is beneficial to the regeneration of cellulose due to its strong polarity. The interactions between ILs and cellulose will become strong with the increase in temperature. The H-bonds of cellulose chains would increase with the rising concentrations of anti-solvents. The interaction energies between cellulose and the anions of ILs are stronger than that of cations. Furthermore, the anti-solvents possess a strong affinity for ILs, cation–anion pairs are dissociated to form H-bonds with anti-solvents, and the H-bonds between cellulose and ILs are destroyed to promote cellulose regeneration.

Rational Design of Tungsten Selenide @ N-Doped Carbon Nanotube for High-Stable Potassium-Ion Batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are deemed as one of the most promising energy storage systems due to their high energy density and low cost. However, their commercial application is far away from satisfactory because of limited suitable electrode materials. Herein, core-shell structured WSe₂ @N-doped C nanotubes are rationally designed and synthesized via selenizing WO₃ @ polypyrrole for the first time. The large interlayer spacing of WSe₂ can facilitate the intercalation/deintercalation of K⁺ . Meanwhile, the core-shell structured nanotube provides favorable interior void space to accommodate the volume expansion of WSe₂ during cycling. Thus, the obtained electrode exhibits superb electrochemical performance with a high capacity of 301.7 mAh g^-1 at 100 mA g^-1 over 120 cycles, and 122.1 mAh g^-1 can remain at 500 mA g^-1 even after 1300 cycles. Ex-situ X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the K-ion storage mechanism of WSe₂ @N-doped C includes intercalation and conversion reaction. Density function theory (DFT) calculation demonstrates the reasonable diffusion pathway of K⁺ . In addition, the obtained WSe₂ @N-doped C nanotubes have been used as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, which also show good rate performance and high cycle stability. Therefore, this work offers a new methodology for the ration design of new structure electrode materials with long cycle stability.

Machine Learning in Screening High Performance Electrocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Converting CO₂ into carbon-based fuels is promising for relieving the greenhouse gas effect and the energy crisis. However, the selectivity and efficiency of current electrocatalysts for CO₂ reductions are still not satisfactory. In this paper, the development of machine learning methods in screening CO₂ reduction electrocatalysts over the recent years is reviewed. Through high-throughput calculation of some key descriptors such as adsorption energies, d-band center, and coordination number by well-constructed machine learning models, the catalytic activity, optimal composition, active sites, and CO₂ reduction reaction pathway over various possible materials can be predicted and understood. Machine learning is now realized as a fast and low-cost method to effectively explore high performance electrocatalysts for CO₂ reduction.

Metal Centers as Nucleophiles: Oxymoron of Halogen Bond-Involving Crystal Engineering

This review highlights recent studies discovering unconventional halogen bonding (HaB) that involves positively charged metal centers. These centers provide their filled d‐orbitals for HaB, and thus behave as nucleophilic components toward the noncovalent interaction. This role of some electron‐rich transition metal centers can be considered an oxymoron in the sense that the metal is, in most cases, formally cationic; consequently, its electron donor function is unexpected. The importance of Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] (Ha=halogen; M is Group 9 (Rh, Ir), 10 (Ni, Pd, Pt), or 11 (Cu, Au)) interactions in crystal engineering is emphasized by showing remarkable examples (reported and uncovered by our processing of the Cambridge Structural Database), where this Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] directional interaction guides the formation of solid supramolecular assemblies of different dimensionalities.
