Second near-infrared fluorescent Metal-Organic framework sensors for in vivo extracellular adenosine triphosphate monitoring

Plant nanobionic sensors enable real-time monitoring of signaling molecules in plants by interfacing them with specifically designed nanoprobes, which have been acknowledged as species-independent analytical tools. In this study, we developed a plant nanobionic sensor for in vivo detection of extracellular adenosine triphosphate (eATP) in living plants by designing a novel second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoprobe. The NIR-II fluorescent nanoprobe (IR-1061 micelle@ZIF-90) with a sandwich structure was synthesized by successive encapsulation of the hydrophobic NIR-II dye IR-1061 with the amphipathic polymer DSPE-mPEG 2000 and MOF ZIF-90. Interestingly, coating ZIF-90 around IR-1061 micelles increased the NIR-II fluorescence 16.6-fold. Utilizing the ultrahigh NIR-II fluorescent emission of the designed nanoprobes and specific recognition of ZIF-90 to ATP, the nanoprobes were applied to spatial and temporal monitoring eATP in model and non-model plants under environmental stress.

A comparison of maceration methods for the preparation of infant skeletal remains for forensic anthropological analysis

Very little literature currently exists prescribing which maceration method to use when preparing infant human remains, resulting in bone quality that is suitable for forensic anthropological analysis. The aim of the study was to test five maceration methods to determine which is most suitable for infant remains for forensic anthropological analysis. The sample included five neonate pig carcasses (Sus scrofa domesticus), ranging between one to three days old. Five maceration methods were tested on the pig carcasses (one pig per maceration method) to determine their effectiveness. The methods included invertebrate maceration by meal worms, chemical maceration by bleach, chemical maceration by borax solution, enzymatic maceration by laundry detergent and sodium carbonate solution, and chemical maceration by sodium hypochlorite. A scoring method was created to assess the effectiveness of each maceration method. Invertebrate maceration and chemical maceration using bleach were the least successful methods of maceration (total maceration score = 8 respectively). Chemical maceration using borax and chemical maceration using sodium hypochlorite achieved complete maceration of the skeletal remains; however, they both resulted in artifacts that are unsuitable for forensic analysis (total maceration score = 14 respectively). Enzymatic maceration using laundry detergent and sodium carbonate was the most successful method (total maceration score = 17). The detergent technique subsequently successfully macerated all five sets of infant human remains. This study has validated that the enzymatic maceration technique using laundry detergent and sodium carbonate can be used to effectively macerate the remains of infant skeletal remains for forensic anthropological analysis.

Multifunctional fish-skin collagen-based hydrogel sealant with dual-dynamic-bond cross-linked for rapid hemostasis and accelerated wound healing

Collagen (COL) is the most widespread functional protein. Designing and developing dual-dynamic-bond cross-linked COL adhesive hydrogel sealants with multifunctional is highly advantageous for achieving a superior wound closure effect and hemostasis. In this study, we developed hybrid hydrogels consisting of fish-skin COL, oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), borax and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to enhance full-thickness wound healing. The hydrogels were furnished with first-rate self-healing capabilities through the dual-dynamic-bond cross-linking of dynamic Schiff base bonds (COL-OSA) and diol boric acid bonds (OSA-borax) with reversible breakage and re-formation. Moreover, the incorporation of PVA stimulated the formation of hydrogen bonds in the system, bolstering the stability of the hydrogel framework. The prepared hydrogel manifests self-healing, injectability, multifunctional adhesiveness and biodegradability. In vivo assessment of the hemostatic capacity of COSP20 hydrogel was superior to gauze both in the mice liver injury model and mice tail amputation model. In addition, a full-thickness skin wound model in mice revealed that the COSP20 hydrogel facilitated faster wound closure by accelerating reepithelialization, COL deposition and angiogenesis. These findings illustrate the potential of hybrid fish-skin COL-based hydrogels to enhance wound healing and promote rapid tissue repair, and provide new possibilities for the effective utilization of marine fishery resources.

A nanocomposite hydrogel loaded with Ag nanoparticles reduced by aloe vera polysaccharides as an antimicrobial multifunctional sensor

Developing high-performance hydrogels with anti-freeze, and antimicrobial properties is crucial for the practical application of flexible sensors. In this study, we prepared silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with aloe polysaccharide (AP) as a reducing agent. Then, the AP/AgNPs were added to a system of polyvinyl alcohol and borax crosslinked in water/glycerol to obtain a multifunctional conductive hydrogel. The incorporated AgNPs improved the conductivity (0.39 S/m) and mechanical properties (elongation at break: 732.9 %, fracture strength: 1267.6 kPa) of the hydrogel. In addition, resultant hydrogel exhibited potential for sensing strain, temperature, and humidity. When used as a strain sensor, the hydrogel system exhibited low detection limit (0.1 %), and fast response (0.08 s). The resistance of the hydrogel decreased with an increase in the absorbed moisture content, enabling humidity detection (25-95 %) to monitor breathing status. As a temperature sensor, the hydrogel supported a wide detection range (-50 to +90 °C) and sensitivity (-30-0 °C, temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) = -5.64 %/°C) to detect changes in the ambient temperature. This study proposes a simple method for manufacturing multifunctional hydrogel sensors, which broadens their application prospects in wearable sensing and electronic products.

Electrochemical screening of selected β-blockers at a polarized liquid-liquid interface

This paper describes the electrochemical behavior of five β-blockers at the polarized liquid-liquid interface formed between aqueous solution (sodium chloride solution or Britton-Robinson buffers) and bis(triphenylphosphoranylidene)ammonium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate (BTPPATPBCl) dissolved in 1,2-dichloroethane (the organic phase). All measurements reported in this work were conducted using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The effects of the concentration of analytes, the pH of the aqueous phase, and applied electrochemical parameters on the analytical performance of the studied system are studied and discussed. The linear dynamic ranges (LDRs) of the studied β-blockers were in the range of 5-200 μmol L-1 and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) value was determined for pindolol (LOD = 1.96 μM μmol L-1). The highest LOD value was 4.96 μmol L-1 found for nebivolol. In addition, physicochemical parameters such as the formal Galvani potential difference (Δaqorgϕ), formal Gibbs free energies of the ion transfer reaction (ΔaqorgG') and partition coefficients (log P'aq/org) for all studied molecules were determined. The latter were compared and correlated with the available literature values of log Poctanol. Finally, a standard addition method was used to determine the concentration of nebivolol in pharmaceutical preparations using a platform based on the electrified liquid-liquid interface.

Separation of carbohydrates using dynamically adsorbed borate stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography

In this work, a chromatographic method for the separation of carbohydrates was proposed. Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-amine (TRIS) functionalized silica-based hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) stationary was synthesized. The dynamically absorbed borate layer is generated by using borate buffer as a polar modifier due to the complexation of borate with TRIS ligand in the stationary phase. The chromatographic systems were analyzed by the linear solvation energy relationship model. The calculated system constants revealed the enhancement of anionic exchange by the addition of borate in the mobile phase system. In addition, ligand exchange is critical for the retention and elution order of sugars and sugar alcohols. Carbohydrates displayed prolonged retention with different selectivity profiles relating to their complexation coefficients with borate. Experiment results showed that the effect of borate in this chromatographic system was stable within the range of pH 3-7 and borate concentration of 5-15 mM. This work provides a complementary solution for the separation of carbohydrates. It can also be extended to the separation of glycosides.

Desirable Strong and Tough Adhesive Inspired by Dragonfly Wings and Plant Cell Walls

The production of wood-based panels has a significant demand for mechanically strong and flexible biomass adhesives, serving as alternatives to nonrenewable and toxic formaldehyde-based adhesives. Nonetheless, plywood usually exhibits brittle fracture due to the inherent trade-off between rigidity and toughness, and it is susceptible to damage and deformation defects in production applications. Herein, inspired by the microstructure of dragonfly wings and the cross-linking structure of plant cell walls, a soybean meal (SM) adhesive with great strength and toughness was developed. The strategy was combined with a multiple assembly system based on the tannic acid (TA) stripping/modification of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2@TA) hybrids, phenylboronic acid/quaternary ammonium doubly functionalized chitosan (QCP), and SM. Motivated by the microstructure of dragonfly wings, MoS2@TA was tightly bonded with the SM framework through Schiff base and strong hydrogen bonding to dissipate stress energy through crack deflection, bridging, and immobilization. QCP imitated borate chemistry in plant cell walls to optimize interfacial interactions within the adhesive by borate ester bonds, boron-nitrogen coordination bonds, and electrostatic interactions and dissipate energy through sacrificial bonding. The shear strength and fracture toughness of the SM/QCP/MoS2@TA adhesive were 1.58 MPa and 0.87 J, respectively, which were 409.7% and 866.7% higher than those of the pure SM adhesive. In addition, MoS2@TA and QCP gave the adhesive good mildew resistance, durability, weatherability, and fire resistance. This bioinspired design strategy offers a viable and sustainable approach for creating multifunctional strong and tough biobased materials.

Borax induces ferroptosis of glioblastoma by targeting HSPA5/NRF2/GPx4/GSH pathways

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive and lethal form of primary brain tumour. Borax has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-cancer activity through cell death pathways. However, the specific impact of borax on ferroptosis in GBM is not well-established, and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Initially, the effective concentration of borax on cell viability and proliferation in U251 and A172 cells was determined. Subsequently, the effects of borax on the wound healing were analysed. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPx4), glutathione (GSH), HSP70 protein 5 (HSPA5), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and caspase-3/7 activity were determined in borax-treated and untreated cells. Finally, the protein expression levels of HSPA5, NRF2 and GPx4 were analysed. Borax suppressed cell viability and proliferation in U251 and A172 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. In addition, borax treatment decreased GPx4, GSH, HSPA5 and NRF2 levels in U251 and A172 cells while increasing MDA levels and caspase-3/7 activity. Moreover, borax reduced mRNA and protein levels of HSPA5, NRF2 and GPx4 in U251 and A172 cells. Consequently, borax may induce ferroptosis in GBM cells and regulate the associated regulatory mechanisms targeting NRF2 and HSPA5 pathways. This knowledge may contribute to the development of novel therapeutic approaches targeting ferroptosis in GBM and potentially improve patient outcomes.

Impact of production methods on properties of natural rosin added polylactic acid/sodium pentaborate and polylactic acid/calcium carbonate films

Nowadays biopolymers play an important role in packaging materials due to their protection properties against physical and chemical degradation or mechanical resistance. In this study, sodium pentaborate anhydride (B5NaO8), eggshell (CaCO3) nanoparticles, and natural rosin additives were introduced to pure PLA to produce a biofilm protecting from UV rays. The impact of the preparation method of hybrid biocomposite films was carried out based on the polymer casting method and using in the first case only magnetic mixing whereas magnetic mixing coupled with ultrasonic homogenizer was used in the second case. All biocomposite films were obtained for a nanoparticle content fixed at 7.5 wt% and various rosin rates (1, 5, 10, and 40 wt%). This study aims to expand the UV protection zone in PLA films. The thermal and mechanical properties, transmittance of UV-visible rays, microstructure analysis, and contact angle values were evaluated to detect the effect of the preparation method on the final properties. The results showed that the homogeneous distribution of the particles was more effective using an ultrasonic homogenizer. The increase of the rosin amount exhibited a reduction of the UV-visible light transmittance and the wettability was observed, demonstrating a potential use of these films in packaging.

Gamma rays and neutrons attenuation performance of a developed lead borate glass for radiotherapy room

The development of radiation therapy necessitated a continuous R&D for radiotherapy rooms' glass windows to reach the highest levels of protection for the staff of the radiotherapy facility. Therefore, in this article, a novel type of lead borate glass depending on parallel augmenting of lead and boron was produced to be used as gamma-rays and fast and thermal neutrons barriers in radiotherapy rooms. Neutrons and gamma rays' attenuation parameters, fast neutrons removal cross section ${\varSigma}_R$, thermal neutron total cross section ${\sigma}_T$, mass attenuation coefficient $\sigma$, linear attenuation coefficient μ, half-value layer, mean free path, effective atomic number Zeff, effective electron density Neff, and buildup factor for energy absorption (energy absorption buildup factor) and exposure (exposure buildup factor) were studied extensively. Three tools, Phy-X/PSD, EpiXS and XCOM computer programs and the standard mixture rules were utilized to estimate the attenuation parameters. The improvement caused by the augmentation of lead and boron in both gamma rays and neutrons attenuation was evident from the obtained results. The glass containing the highest lead and boron concentration PbB5, 40Pb-50B, which is the most efficient attenuator for gamma rays and both thermal and fast neutrons was recommended to be a distinguished choice as a shield in a radiotherapy room.

Management of ground tire rubber waste by incorporation into polyurethane-based composite foams

Rapid economic growth implicated the developing multiple industry sectors, including the automotive branch, increasing waste generation since recycling and utilization methods have not been established simultaneously. A very severe threat is the generation of enormous amounts of post-consumer tires considered burdensome waste, e.g., due to the substantial emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Therefore, it is essential to develop novel, environmentally friendly methods for their utilization, which would hinder their environmental impacts. One of the most promising approaches is shredding, resulting in the generation of ground tire rubber (GTR), which can be introduced into polymeric materials as filler. The presented work is related to the thermomechanical treatment of GTR in a twin-screw extruder with zinc borate, whose incorporation is aimed to enhance shear forces within the extruder barrel. Modified GTR was introduced into flexible polyurethane (PU) foams, and the impact of modification parameters on the cellular structure, static and dynamic mechanical performance, thermal stability, as well as thermal insulation, and acoustic properties was investigated. Emissions of VOCs from applied fillers and prepared composites were monitored and evaluated. Depending on the treatment parameters, beneficial changes in foams' cellular structure were noted, which enhanced their thermal insulation performance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. It was proven that the proposed method of GTR thermomechanical treatment assisted by zinc borate particles might benefit the performance of flexible PU foamed composites and hinder VOC emissions, which could broaden the application range of GTR and provide novel ways for its efficient utilization.

Sodium Pentaborate Prevents Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatorenal Injury by Suppressing Oxidative Stress, Lipid Peroxidation, Apoptosis, and Inflammatory Cytokines in Rats

Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, APAP, or paracetamol) is one of the drugs that may be damaging to the kidneys and liver when used in excess. In this context, it is vital to treat these side effects on the liver and kidneys with various antioxidants. Diseases have been treated using herbal and mineral remedies since ancient times. The mineral boron, found in rocks and water, is a crucial ingredient with multiple positive biological effects. The primary objective of this research is to determine whether or not boron has a protective effect against the toxicity generated by APAP in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated orally with boron-source sodium pentaborate (B50 and B100 mg/kg) for 6 days by gastric gavage in order to counteract the toxicity caused by a single dose of APAP (1g/kg). APAP increased lipid peroxidation as well as serum BUN, creatinine concentrations, and serum activities of AST, ALP, and ALT by consuming GSH in liver and kidney tissues. In addition, the activity of antioxidative enzymes, including SOD, CAT, and GPx, was diminished. Inflammatory indicators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-33 were elevated in conjunction with APAP toxicity. In kidney and liver tissues, APAP dramatically increased the activity of caspase-3 and triggered apoptosis. Sodium pentaborate therapy on a short-term basis reduced biochemical levels despite these effects of APAP. This study showed that boron protects rats from the harmful effects of APAP by acting as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic agent.

Optimizing bioconversion processes of rice husk into value-added products: D-psicose, bioethanol, and lactic acid

Rice husk, rich carbon content, is an agricultural waste produced globally at an amount of 120 million tons annually, and it has high potential as a biorefinery feedstock. Herein, we investigated the feasibility of producing various products as D-psicose, bioethanol and lactic acid from rice husk (RH) through a biorefinery process. Alkali-hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid pretreatment of RH effectively removed lignin and silica, resulting in enzymatic hydrolysis yield of approximately 86.3% under optimal hydrolysis conditions. By using xylose isomerase as well as D-psicose-3-epimerase with borate, glucose present in the RH hydrolysate was converted into D-psicose with a 40.6% conversion yield in the presence of borate. Furthermore, bioethanol (85.4%) and lactic acid (92.5%) were successfully produced from the RH hydrolysate. This study confirmed the high potential of RH as a biorefinery feedstock, and it is expected that various platform chemicals and value-added products can be produced using RH.

Bioproduction of Rare d-Allulose from d-Glucose via Borate-Assisted Isomerization

d-Allulose is a low-calorie functional rare sugar with excellent processing suitability and unique physiological efficacy. d-Allulose is primarily produced from d-fructose through enzymatic epimerization, facing the constraints of a low conversion yield and high production cost. In this study, a double-enzyme cascade system with tetraborate-assisted isomerization was constructed for the efficient production of d-allulose from inexpensive d-glucose. With the introduction of sodium tetraborate (STB), capable of forming complexes with diol-bearing sugars, the conversion yield of d-allulose from d-glucose substantially escalated from the initial 17.37% to 44.97%. Furthermore, d-allulose was found to exhibit the most pronounced binding affinity for STB with an association constant of 1980.51 M-1, notably surpassing that of d-fructose (183.31 M-1) and d-glucose (35.37 M-1). Additionally, the structural analysis of the sugar-STB complexes demonstrated that d-allulose reacted with STB via the cis 2,3-hydroxyl groups in the α-furanose form. Finally, the mechanism underlying STB-assisted isomerization was proposed, emphasizing the preferential formation of an allulose-STB complex that effectively shifts the isomerization equilibrium to the allulose side, thereby resulting in high yield of d-allulose. Such an STB-facilitated isomerization system would also provide a guidance for the cost-effective synthesis of other rare sugars.

Anti-Microbial Effect of AgBr-NP@CTMAB on Streptococcus Mutans and Assessment of Surface Roughness Hardness and Flexural Strength of PMMA

Purpose

To investigate the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) and its biofilm by AgBr-nanoparticles (NP) @CTMAB (cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide) and evaluate the changes in Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)'s surface roughness (Ra), microhardness, and flexural strength during prolonged immersion in AgBr-NP@CTMAB for application in the denture cleaning industry.

Patients and Methods

The antibacterial activity of AgBr-NP@CTMAB against S.mutans was measured colony formation assay, OD600 and laser confocal microscopy. Changes in the specimens' values for surface roughness, microhardness, and flexural strength (MPa) were measured after immersion solutions for 180 or 360 days.

Results

The AgBr-NP@CTMAB solution exhibited a robust antibacterial effect on planktonic S. mutans, with a minimum bactericidal concentration of 5 µg/mL. The 10 µg/mL AgBr-NP@CTMAB solution efficiently inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation. (2) No significant difference in surface roughness after immersion in AgBr-NP@CTMAB (10 µg/mL and 20 µg/mL) comparing with distilled water (P > 0.05) and Polident had significantly higher than distilled water (P < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in the surface hardness of the PMMA specimens that were immersed in the Polident compared with those in distilled water (P < 0.05). While, no significant differences in surface hardness after immersion in the AgBr-NP@CTMAB (P > 0.05). The result of flexural strength suggested that there was no statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between AgBr-NP@CTMAB as well as Polident and water.

Conclusion

AgBrNP@CTMAB can efficiently inhibit the growth of plankton S.mutans and biofilm formation, without affecting the flexural strength, microhardness, or surface roughness of PMMA. Therefore, AgBrNP@CTMAB holds promise as a new denture cleaning agent.

Promoting In Vivo NIR-II Fluorescent Imaging for Lipid in Lipid Metabolism Diseases Diagnosis

Lipid metabolism diseases have become a tremendous risk worldwide, along with the development of productivity and particular attention to public health. It has been an urgent necessity to exploit reliable imaging strategies for lipids and thus to monitor fatty liver diseases. Herein, by converting the NIR-I signal to the NIR-II signal with IR1061 for the monitoring of lipid, the in vivo imaging of fatty liver disease was promoted on the contrast and visual effect. The main advantages of the imaging promotion in this work included a long emission wavelength, rapid response, and high signal-background-ratio (SBR) value. After promoting the NIR-I signal to NIR-II signal, IR1061 achieved higher SBR value and exhibited a dose-dependent fluorescence intensity at 1100 nm along with the increase of the EtOH proportion as well as steady and selective optical responses toward liposomes. IR1061 was further applied in the in vivo imaging of lipid in fatty liver diseases. In spite of the differences in body weight gain and TC level between healthy mice and fatty liver diseases two models, IR1061 achieved high-resolution imaging in the liver region to monitor the fatty liver disease status. This work might be informatic for the clinical diagnosis and therapeutical treatments of fatty liver diseases.

Effect of borate, fluoride and strontium ions on biomimetic nucleation of calcium phosphate studied using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray diffraction

OBJECTIVES

Apatite minerals can have various anions and cations in their crystal structure in addition to phosphate ion (PO₄³⁻) and calcium ion (Ca2+). The aim of this study is to investigate effects of the borate, fluoride and strontium ions on biomimetic nucleation of calcium phosphate.

METHODS

Nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite (H-Ap) was obtained from a supersaturated buffered solution containing 4.12 mM HPO42- and 5.88 mM Ca2+ (H-Ap). Four additives were used in solid solution methods: (i) 0.588 mM F- (F-Ap), (ii) 5.88 mM Sr2+ (Sr-Ap), (iii) 4.12 mM BO33- (BO3-Ap), and (iv) a surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) filler eluate that contained 0.17 mM Sr2+, 0.588 mM F-, 11.1 mM BO33-- (SPRG-Ap). Apatite crystallization was investigated using a solid-state magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) with the Rietveld analysis.

RESULTS

A 2D 1H-31P heteronuclear-correlation NMR showed F- ion incorporation in the apatite structure of the F-Ap and SPRG-Ap. The peaks on the 31P axis of the F-Ap, Sr-Ap, and BO3-Ap were different from that of the H-Ap, and the full width at half maximum increased in the following order: H-Ap∼F-Ap∼BO3-Ap< SPRG-Ap< Sr-Ap, suggesting the incorporation of the F-, Sr2+ and BO33-. The incorporation of F and BO3 was further confirmed by 19F and 11B NMR. The XRD revealed that Sr2+ was preferentially incorporated into the CaII site.

SIGNIFICANCE

The F-, Sr2+ and BO33-ions might be involved in modifying the crystallization of apatite precipitation, producing a variety of apatite. S-PRG filler that release these ions may have an effect on remineralization, i.e., the reformation of apatite lost due to caries.

Facile preparation of self-healing hydrogels based on chitosan and PVA with the incorporation of curcumin-loaded micelles for wound dressings

The increased demand for improved strategies for wound healing has, in recent years, motivated the development of multifunctional hydrogels with favorable bio-compatibility and antibacterial properties. To this regard, the current study presented the design of a novel self-healing composite hydrogel that could perform as wound dressing for the promotion of wound healing. The composite hydrogels were composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax and chitosan functionalized with sialic acid (SA-CS) and curcumin loaded pluronic F127 micelles. The hydrogels were formed through the boronic ester bond formation between PVA, SA-CS and borax under physiological conditions and demonstrated adjustable mechanical properties, gelation kinetics and antibacterial properties. When incubating with NIH3T3 cells, the hydrogels also demonstrated good biocompatibility. These aspects offer a promising foundation for their prospective applications in developing clinical materials for wound healing.

Potential effect dietary supplementation of calcium tetraborate in quails exposed to cadmium: Its impact on productive performance, oxidative stress, cecal microflora, and histopathological changes

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, and Cd exposure harms human health, agriculture, and animal husbandry. The present study aimed to investigate the potential protective effect of dietary supplementation of calcium tetraborate (CTB) on productive performance, oxidative stress, cecal microflora, and histopathological changes in quail exposed to Cd. A total of one hundred twenty, 6-week-old Japanese quail (four females and two males/replicate) were divided into four groups (30 quails/group): the control group (feeding basic diet), CTB group (basic diet containing 300 mg/kg CaB4O7, 22.14% elemental B/kg diet), the Cd group (basic diet containing 100 mg/kg cadmium chloride (CdCl2) (total Cd content of 92.1 mg/kg)) and the CTB + Cd group (basic diet containing 300 mg/kg CTB and 100 mg/kg CdCl2). The results showed that Cd exposure caused decreased performance, increased the proportion of broken and soft-shelled eggs, induced oxidative stress, affected cecal microflora, epicardial hemorrhages in the heart, focal necrosis in the liver, degeneration in the kidneys, and degenerated and necrotic seminiferous tubules in the testicles. CTB prevented Cd-induced oxidative stress in liver tissue by increasing total antioxidant status and reducing total oxidant status. In addition, CTB improved egg production and feed conversion ratio (FCR). CTB protected the cecal microflora by inhibiting Enterobacteriaceae and promoting Lactobacillus. CTB also reduced Cd-induced histopathological damage in the heart, liver, kidneys, and testicles. In conclusion, these findings suggest that CTB could be used in Cd-challenged quail, and this compound provides new insights into the toxicity of environmental Cd.

A Guanosine-Derived Antitumor Supramolecular Prodrug

The prodrug strategy for its potential to enhance the pharmacokinetic and/or pharmacodynamic properties of drugs, especially chemotherapeutic agents, has been widely recognized as an important means to improve therapeutic efficiency. Irinotecan's active metabolite, 7-ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN38), a borate derivative, was incorporated into a G-quadruplex hydrogel (GB-SN38) by the ingenious and simple approach. Drug release does not depend on carboxylesterase, thus bypassing the side effects caused by ineffective activation, but specifically responds to the ROS-overexpressed tumor microenvironment by oxidative hydrolysis of borate ester that reduces serious systemic toxicity from nonspecific biodistribution of SN38. Comprehensive spectroscopy was used to define the structural and physicochemical characteristics of the drug-loaded hydrogel. The GB-SN38 hydrogel's high level of biosafety and notable tumor-suppressive properties were proven in in vitro and in vivo tests.

11B NMR of the Morphological Evolution of Traditional Chinese Medicine Borax

This article applies nuclear magnetic resonance technology to the study of boron-containing traditional Chinese medicine, in order to explore the morphological evolution of boron elements in traditional Chinese medicine. Borax is a traditional Chinese medicine with anti-corrosion, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticonvulsant effects. It is made by boiling, removing stones, and drying borax minerals like borate salts. This article introduces an 11B nuclear magnetic resonance method for identifying and characterizing boron-containing compounds in TCM. We applied this technology to borax aqueous solutions in different chemical environments and found that with boron mixed in the form of SP2 hybridization in equilateral triangles and SP3 hybridization in equilateral tetrahedra, the pH changes in alkaline environments significantly affected the ratio of the two. At the same time, it was found that in addition to the raw material peak, boron signals of other boron-containing compounds were also detected in 20 commercially available boron-containing TCM preparations. These new boron-containing compounds may be true pharmaceutical active ingredients, and adding them directly to the formula can improve quality and safety. This article describes the detection of 11B NMR in boron-containing traditional Chinese medicine preparations. It is simple, non-destructive, and can provide chemical fingerprint studies for boron-containing traditional Chinese medicine.

Hexose phosphorylation for a non-enzymatic glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway on early Earth

Glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathways play essential roles in cellular processes and are assumed to be among the most ancient metabolic pathways. Non-enzymatic metabolism-like reactions might have occurred on the prebiotic Earth and been inherited by the biological reactions. Previous research has identified a part of the non-enzymatic glycolysis and the non-enzymatic pentose phosphate pathway from glucose 6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate, which are intermediates of these reactions. However, how these phosphorylated molecules were formed on the prebiotic Earth remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of glucose and gluconate from simple aldehydes in alkaline solutions and the formation of glucose 6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate with borate using thermal evaporation. These results imply that the initial stages of glycolysis-like and pentose phosphate pathway-like reactions were achieved in borate-rich evaporative environments on prebiotic Earth, suggesting that non-enzymatic metabolism provided biomolecules and their precursors on prebiotic Earth.

Enhancing near-infrared fluorescence intensity and stability of PLGA-b-PEG micelles by introducing Gd-DOTA at the core boundary

Micelles have been extensively used in biomedicine as potential carriers of hydrophobic fluorescent dyes. Their small diameters can potentially enable them to evade recognition by the reticuloendothelial system, resulting in prolonged circulation. Nevertheless, their lack of stability in physiological environments limits the imaging utility of micelles. In particular, when a dye sensitive to water, such as IR-1061, is encapsulated in the micelle core, the destabilized structure leads to interactions between water and dye, degrading the fluorescence. In this study, we investigated a method to improve micelle stability utilizing the electrical effect of gadolinium (Gd3+ ) and tetraazacyclododecane tetraacetic acid (DOTA), introduced into the micelles. Three micellar structures, one containing a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA-b-PEG) block copolymer, and two other structures, including PLGA-b-PEG with DOTA or Gd-DOTA introduced at the boundary of PLGA and PEG, were prepared with IR-1061 in the core. Structures that contained DOTA at the border of the PLGA core and PEG shell exhibited much higher fluorescence intensity than probes without DOTA. With Gd3+ ions at the DOTA center, fluorescence stability was enhanced remarkably in physiological environments. Most interesting is the finding that fluorescence is enhanced with increased Gd-DOTA concentrations. In conclusion, we found that overall fluorescence and stability are improved by introducing Gd-DOTA at the boundary of the PLGA core and PEG shell. Improving micelle stability is crucial for further biomedical applications of micellar probes such as bimodal fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging.

Crosslinking of Epoxidized Natural Rubber with Borax for Self-Healing and Self-Repairing Properties: pH Dependence

Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) crosslinked using borax, which exhibits self-healing and self-repairing properties, is successfully developed. The crosslink formation of ENR by using borax under neutral and alkaline conditions is investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows that the borate-ester bond is formed in ENR prepared under both neutral and alkaline conditions, whereas boron nuclear magnetic resonance (11 B-NMR) results exhibit that the ENR prepared under alkaline conditions more actively forms crosslink networks with borax. Moreover, the crosslink density and gel content increase significantly with the presence of borax in alkaline conditions. The crosslink density and gel content of ENR with 10 phr borax are higher by 155% and 36%, respectively, than those of neat ENR. Furthermore, the formation of the crosslinking ENR by borax enhances self-healing and self-repairing properties. The healing efficiency significantly increases from 1.09% to 85.90%, when ENR is developed under alkaline conditions with 30 phr borax. These results represent the first successful demonstration of the efficient use of borax as a crosslinker in ENR, which exhibits its promising self-healing and self-repairing properties under atmospheric conditions without the need for external stimuli. The ENR prepared in this work holds great promise for various self-healing rubber applications.

Molluscicidal activity of calcium borate nanoparticles with kodom ball-flower structure on hematological, histological and biochemical parameters of Eobania vermiculata snails

Land snails are the most harmful pests in agricultural fields. Eobania vermiculata is a widespread snail species that causes massive damage to all agricultural crops. Thus, the molluscicidal activity of calcium borate nanoparticles (CB-NPs) against Eobania vermiculata was evaluated and compared with metaldehyde (Gastrotox® E 5% G). The amorphous phase of CB-NPs was obtained after thermal treatment at a low temperature (500 °C) which conformed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. CB-NPs are composed of aggregated nano-sheets with an average thickness of 54 nm which enhanced their molluscicidal activity. These nano-sheets displayed meso-porous network architecture with pore diameters of 13.65 nm, and a 9.46 m2/g specific surface area. CB-NPs and metaldehyde (Gastrotox® E 5% G) exhibited molluscicidal effects on Eobania vermiculata snails with median lethal concentrations LC50 of 175.3 and 60.5 mg/l, respectively, after 72 h of exposure. The results also showed significant reductions of Eobania vermiculata snails hemocytes' mean total number, the levels of Testosterone (T) and Estrogen (E), alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, albumin, and protein concentrations, succinate dehydrogenase, glucose, triglycerides and phospholipids levels, while significant increases in the phagocytic index and mortality index, both transaminases (ALT and AST) and glycogen phosphorylase concentration were observed after the exposure to LC50 of CB-NPs or metaldehyde (Gastrotox® E 5% G) compared to the control group. Therefore, CB-NPs could be used as an alternative molluscicide for controlling Eobania vermiculata, but further studies are needed to assess their effects on non-target organisms.

Dual-Cross-Linked PEI/PVA Hydrogel for pH-Responsive Drug Delivery

Herein, a pH-responsive dual cross-linked hydrogel for controlled drug release is presented. The hydrogel was constructed with reversible borate ester bonds and crystalline poly(vinyl alcohol). By changing the environmental pH, its physicochemical characteristics, including rheological properties, mechanical properties, microstructural features, and the biocompatibility of the gels, were evaluated. The gels at tumor acidic conditions exhibited swelling and lower compressive strength and modulus than those in a physiological environment, which was attributed to the pH-responsive borate ester bonds and the protonation of amine groups on the PEI polyelectrolyte. Importantly, the drug-encapsulated biocompatible hydrogel showed sustained and increased release under an acidic environment, and it followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Therefore, it exemplifies that borate ester bond-based pH-responsive biomaterials have high promise in biomedical research, especially for drug delivery.

Size separation of sodium dodecyl sulfate-proteins by capillary electrophoresis in dilute and ultra-dilute dextran solutions

SDS capillary gel electrophoresis is a widely used in the biopharma and the biomedical fields for rapid size separation of proteins. However, very limited information is available on the use of dilute and ultra-dilute sieving matrices for SDS-protein analysis. Here, background electrolytes (BGEs) containing 1%-0% dextran were used in borate-based BGE to separate a protein sizing ladder (PSL) ≤225 kDa and the intact and subunit forms of a therapeutic monoclonal antibody (mAb). The separation performance for the PSL and mAb components differed significantly with decreasing dextran concentration. Ferguson and reptation plots were used to elucidate the separation mechanism. Highly diluted dextran solutions resulted in linear Ferguson plots for both solute types (cf. Ogston theory) in spite of this model assumes a rigid pore structure, thus cannot describe the separation mechanism in ultra-dilute polymer solutions with no reticulations. The saddle differences between the resolution of the PSL and the intact/subunit mAb forms in ultra-dilute dextran-borate matrices suggested the importance of shape selectivity, manifested by the adequate separation of the SDS covered intact as well as light and heavy chain subunits of the therapeutic mAb even at zero dextran concentration.

Orange-red luminescence of samarium-doped bismuth-germanium-borate glass for light-emitting devices

Samarium (Sm3+ )-doped glass has sparked a rising interest in demonstrating a noticeable emission in the range of 400-700, which is advantageous in solid-state lasers in the visible region, colour displays, undersea communication, and optical memory devices. This study reports the fabrication of Sm3+ -doped bismuth-germanium-borate glasses were established using a standard melt-quenching technique and inspection by absorption, steady-state luminescence, and transient studies. The typical peaks of Sm3+ ions were detected in the visible range under 403 nm excitation. A strong emission band was detected at 599 nm that resembles the 4 G5/2 →6 H7/2 transition of Sm3+ ions for BGBiNYSm0.5 glass. Furthermore, a reddish-orange (coral) luminescence at 646 nm that resembles the 4 G5/2 →6 H9/2 transition was also perceived. The stimulated emission cross-section of 4 G5/2 level for BGBiNYSm0.5 glass was 0.39 × 10-22  cm2 . Lifetime of the 4 G5/2 level was enhanced for the BGBiNYSm0.5 glass and decreased with an increase in active ion concentrations. The lifetime quenching of ions at the metastable state was because of energy transfer among Sm3+ ions by cross-relaxation channels. Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates were evaluated from the emission spectra. Moreover, all the findings recommend these glass as light-emitting materials in the coral region at 599 nm for solid-state lighting applications.

The Effect of Rare-Earth Elements on the Morphological Aspect of Borate and Electrocatalytic Sensing of Biological Compounds

Adjusting the morphological characteristics of a material can result in improved electrocatalytic capabilities of the material itself. An example of this is the introduction of rare-earth elements into the borate structure, which gives a new perspective on the possibilities of this type of material in the field of (bio)sensing. In this paper, we present the preparation of borates including La, Nd and Dy and their application for the modification of a glassy carbon electrode, which is used for the non-enzymatic detection of a biologically relevant molecule, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Compared with the others, dysprosium borate has the best electrocatalytic performance, showing the highest current and the lowest impedance, respectively, as determined using cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests. Quantitative testing of B6 was performed in DPV mode in a Britton-Robinson buffer solution with a pH of 6 and an oxidation potential of about +0.8 V. The calibration graph for the evaluation of B6 has a linear range from 1 to 100 μM, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9985 and a detection limit of 0.051 μM. The DyBO3-modified electrode can be used repeatedly, retaining more than 90% of the initial signal level after six cycles. The satisfactory selectivity offered a potential practical application of the chosen method for the monitoring of pyridoxine in artificially prepared biological fluids with acceptable recovery. In light of all the obtained results, this paper shows an important approach for the successful design of electrocatalysts with tuned architecture and opens new strategies for the development of materials for the needs of electrochemical (bio)sensing.

Processing and characterization of aligned electrospun gelatin/polycaprolactone nanofiber mats incorporating borate glass (13-93B3) microparticles

Aligned biodegradable fibers incorporating bioactive glass particles are being highly investigated for tissue engineering applications. In this study, 5, 7 and 10 wt% melt-derived 1393B3 borate glass (BG) microparticles (average size: 3.15 µm) were incorporated in 83 wt% polycaprolactone (PCL) and 17 wt% gelatin (GEL) (83PCL/17GEL) solutions to produce aligned electrospun composite nanofiber mats. Addition of 5 wt% BG particles significantly increased the alignment of the nanofibers. However, further incorporation of BG particles led to reduced degree of alignment, likely due to an increase of viscosity. Mechanical tests indicated a tensile modulus and tensile strength of approximately 51 MPa and 3.4 MPa, respectively, for 5 wt% addition of 1393B3 BG microparticles, values considered suitable for soft tissue engineering applications. However, with the increasing amount of 1393B3 BG, the nanofiber mats became brittle. Contact angle was reduced after the addition of 5 wt% of 1393B3 BG particles from∼45° to∼39°. Cell culture studies with normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells indicated that 5 wt% 1393B3 BG incorporated nanofiber mats were cytocompatible whereas higher doping with 1393B3 BGs reduced biocompatibility. Overall, 5 wt% 1393B3 BG doped PCL/GEL nanofiber mats were aligned with high biocompatibility exhibiting desirable mechanical properties for soft tissue engineering, which indicates their potential for applications requiring aligned nanofibers, such as peripheral neural regeneration.

Rapid fabrication of tough sodium alginate/MXene/poly(vinyl alcohol) dual-network hydrogel electrolytes for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors

With the rapid development of flexible portable devices, polymer-based hydrogel electrolytes have drawn tremendous attention and widespread interest to replace conventional liquid electrolytes. Herein, an eco-friendly, low cost and fast method was adopted to synthesize novel cross-linked dual-network hydrogel electrolytes (PVA/SA/MXene-NaCl) within 5 min due to the formation of borate bonds. The unique dual-network structure of hydrogel enabled hydrogel electrolytes to efficiently dissipate energy under deformation and the formation of borate bonds endowed hydrogel with self-healing ability. Benefited from the introduction of NaCl and MXene, the hydrogels displayed a high ionic conductivity (40.8 mS/cm) and enhanced mechanical strength (650 kPa). Notedly, the flexible supercapacitor with low concentration of NaCl (0.3 mol L-1) delivered a superior areal capacitance of 130.8 mF cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 and 106.2 mF cm-2 at 3 mA cm-2, and simultaneously offered remarkable capacitance retention under the state of bending, self-healing (five cycles), compression and stretching. Moreover, as-assembled supercapacitor maintained about 88.9 % of its original capacitance and 90.5 % of Coulombic efficiency after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Our research presented a simple and universally pathway to prepare flexible energy storage devices with excellent mechanical and electrochemical properties.

Thermoluminescence studies of zinc borate (ZnB2 O4 ) phosphor doped with rare earths for dosimetric aspects

A series of ZnB2 O4 phosphors doped with different concentrations of Eu and Dy (0.05 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 mol%) and co-doped with Ce (1, 2, 5, 7, 10 mol%) respectively was prepared via the solid-state reaction technique and the thermoluminescence (TL) behaviour of gamma ray-irradiated samples was studied. The synthesized samples were irradiated with γ-rays for the dose range 0.03-1.20 kGy. The TL intensity variations with dose, dopant concentration, and the effect of co-doping were studied. The TL response curves for ZnB2 O4 :Eu3+ and ZnB2 O4 :Dy3+ , ZnB2 O4 :Eu3 ,Ce3+ and ZnB2 O4 :Dy3+ ,Ce3+ phosphor were observed. It was revealed that ZnB2 O4 :Eu3+ showed a linear TL behaviour for the dose 0.03-1.20 kGy and ZnB2 O4 :Dy3+ showed linearity for the gamma dose range 0.03-0.10 kGy. Furthermore, fading for all the samples was observed to be less than 10% for a storage period of 30 days. In addition to this, the trapping parameters, especially activation energies were evaluated using the Ilich method and the initial rise method. The activation energy values obtained from both methods were in complete agreement with each other.

Stereoselective Synthesis of O-Glycosides with Borate Acceptors

Borate esters have been applied widely as coupling partners in organic synthesis. However, the direct utilization of borate acceptors in O-glycosylation with glycal donors remains underexplored. Herein, we describe a novel O-glycosylation resulting in the formation of 2,3-unsaturated O-glycosides and 2-deoxy O-glycosides mediated by palladium and copper catalysis, respectively. This O-glycosylation method tolerated a broad scope of trialkyl/triaryl borates and various glycals with exclusive stereoselectivities in high yields. All the desired aliphatic/aromatic O-glycosides and 2-deoxy O-glycosides were generated successfully, without the hemiacetal byproducts and O→C rearrangement because of the nature of borate esters. The utility of this strategy was demonstrated by functionalizing the 2,3-unsaturated glycoside products to form saturated β-O-glycosides, 2,3-deoxy O-glycosides, and 2,3-epoxy O-glycosides.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) Modified via the Hantzsch Reaction for Biosafe Antioxidant Self-Healing Hydrogel

Efficient routes for the preparation of functional self-healing hydrogels from functional polymers are needed. In this study, we developed a strategy to effectively produce a vanillin-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-vanillin) through the Hantzsch reaction. This polymer was cross-linked with a phenylboronic acid-containing polymer (PB) that was also prepared using the Hantzsch reaction to fabricate a hydrogel through borate ester linkages under mild conditions (25 °C, pH ∼ 7.4). This hydrogel had excellent antioxidant abilities due to the 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) rings and the vanillin moieties in the hydrogel structures; it was also self-healable and injectable owing to the dynamic borate ester linkages. Furthermore, the antioxidant self-healing hydrogel had low cytotoxicity and exhibited favorable safety in animal experiments, indicating its potential as a safe implantable cell or drug carrier. This study developed a method for preparing functional polymers and related self-healing hydrogels in a facile manner; it demonstrated the value of the Hantzsch reaction in exploiting antioxidant self-healing hydrogels for biomedical applications, which may provide insight into the design of other functional self-healing hydrogels through different multicomponent reactions.

Nicotinamide Riboside, a Promising Vitamin B3 Derivative for Healthy Aging and Longevity: Current Research and Perspectives

Many studies have suggested that the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is involved in an extensive spectrum of human pathologies, including neurodegenerative disorders, cardiomyopathy, obesity, and diabetes. Further, healthy aging and longevity appear to be closely related to NAD+ and its related metabolites, including nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). As a dietary supplement, NR appears to be well tolerated, having better pharmacodynamics and greater potency. Unfortunately, NR is a reactive molecule, often unstable during its manufacturing, transport, and storage. Recently, work related to prebiotic chemistry discovered that NR borate is considerably more stable than NR itself. However, immediately upon consumption, the borate dissociates from the NR borate and is lost in the body through dilution and binding to other species, notably carbohydrates such as fructose and glucose. The NR left behind is expected to behave pharmacologically in ways identical to NR itself. This review provides a comprehensive summary (through Q1 of 2023) of the literature that makes the case for the consumption of NR as a dietary supplement. It then summarizes the challenges of delivering quality NR to consumers using standard synthesis, manufacture, shipping, and storage approaches. It concludes by outlining the advantages of NR borate in these processes.

Highly stretchable, fast self-healing nanocellulose hydrogel combining borate ester bonds and acylhydrazone bonds

Self-healing hydrogels have received considerable attention as a promising material for flexible electronic devices given their mechanical durability and structurally tunable properties. In this study, a highly stretchable self-healing hydrogel with dual cross-linking network was developed via borate ester bonds generated by polyvinyl alcohol and borax, and acylhydrazone bonds formed by aldehyde nanocellulose with adipic acid dihydrazide-modified alginate. Compared with the single network hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol and borax, the introduction of dynamic acylhydrazone bonds greatly increases the flexibility of the hydrogel. The elongation rate increased from 480 % to approximately 1440 %, and the self-healing efficiency increased from 84.6 % to 92.7 % after healing for 60 min at ambient temperature without any stimulus. Moreover, the longer the self-healing time, the more evident the self-healing effect of the acylhydrazone bonds. In addition, electrical measurements confirmed a wide working strain range (ca.1000 %), durability, and reliability. Once assembled as a strain sensor, the hydrogel is able to monitor both large and subtle human motions. Besides, this hydrogel exhibited desirable biocompatibility, as demonstrated by in vitro cytotoxicity towards NIH 3T3 cells. These integrated properties make this nanocomposite hydrogel a promising candidate for future applications as green, flexible, and smart sensors.

Intracoronal tooth bleaching - A review and treatment guidelines

Intracoronal bleaching is a minimally invasive procedure that was introduced into dentistry in the 19th century. The role of that procedure in enhancing the colour of teeth subjected to internal discolouration while being conservative made it extremely popular amongst dental professionals. Different materials and techniques have been utilized over the years attempting to obtain predictable long-term results while minimizing any associated risks. Contemporarily, bleaching agents are mainly based on peroxide-releasing compounds in different formulations and delivery systems. Different theories have been formulated on the bleaching mechanism of such agents, but the exact mechanism is yet to be proven. The effect of hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching agents on the organic structure of enamel and dentine has been extensively investigated to address the effects of bonding of resin-based restorative materials to hard tooth structure. Multiple case reports raised a concern about the contribution of intracoronal bleaching in developing invasive root resorption. Modification of intracoronal bleaching techniques was thus necessary to address such concerns. This review will provide a summary of the important aspects of intracoronal bleaching, focusing on how it applies to the contemporary clinical setting. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

Improved borate fusion technique for determination of rare earth elements in electronic waste components

The information regarding the abundance of rare earth elements (REEs) in electronic waste components (EWC) helps the recycling industry. However, after the end of use, improper disposal may be detrimental to the environment by releasing toxic substances. An optimised alkaline borate fusion method for REEs determination in electronic waste (e-waste) was developed. It is divided into three phases. Firstly, the sample preparation stages were investigated. Secondly, the optimisation of experimental particulars comprises the choice of oxidiser, flux composition, non-wetting agents, fusion time, and sample to flux ratio. The third phase consists of spectroscopic determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. The highest REEs recovery (mg/g of e-waste) were found more in fine fractions of less than 0.09 mm compared to gross fractions. The optimum and safe fusion conditions for e-waste were achieved after slow thermal decomposition up to 550°C, pulverisation to 90% of -53 µm, flux composition (90%LiBO₂ + 10% Li₂B₄O₇), 3:1 oxidant ratio of Na₂CO₃: NaNO₃, LiBr as the non-wetting agent. Also, a sample to flux ratio of 1:15 and a total fusion time of 10 min was optimised. The newly improved alkaline fusion results compared better to those obtained from classical mineral acid dissolution with at most 5% RSD on REEs studied. The alkaline borate fusion results in smartphones e-waste were at least 15% and 25% higher than in four acid digest and microwave-assisted digest techniques, respectively. The results indicated enrichment of REEs in smartphones followed by non-smartphones and computer waste.

Making and breaking of boron bridges in the pectic domain rhamnogalacturonan-II at apoplastic pH in vivo and in vitro

Cross-linking of the cell-wall pectin domain rhamnogalacturonan-II (RG-II) via boron bridges between apiose residues is essential for normal plant growth and development, but little is known about its mechanism or reversibility. We characterized the making and breaking of boron bridges in vivo and in vitro at 'apoplastic' pH. RG-II (13-26 μm) was incubated in living Rosa cell cultures and cell-free media with and without 1.2 mm H3 BO3 and cationic chaperones (Ca2+ , Pb2+ , polyhistidine, or arabinogalactan-protein oligopeptides). The cross-linking status of RG-II was monitored electrophoretically. Dimeric RG-II was stable at pH 2.0-7.0 in vivo and in vitro. In-vitro dimerization required a 'catalytic' cation at all pHs tested (1.75-7.0); thus, merely neutralizing the negative charge of RG-II (at pH 1.75) does not enable boron bridging. Pb2+ (20-2500 μm) was highly effective at pH 1.75-4.0, but not 4.75-7.0. Cationic peptides were effective at approximately 1-30 μm; higher concentrations caused less dimerization, probably because two RG-IIs then rarely bonded to the same peptide molecule. Peptides were ineffective at pH 1.75, their pH optimum being 2.5-4.75. d-Apiose (>40 mm) blocked RG-II dimerization in vitro, but did not cleave existing boron bridges. Rosa cells did not take up d-[U-14 C]apiose; therefore, exogenous apiose would block only apoplastic RG-II dimerization in vivo. In conclusion, apoplastic pH neither broke boron bridges nor prevented their formation. Thus boron-starved cells cannot salvage boron from RG-II, and 'acid growth' is not achieved by pH-dependent monomerization of RG-II. Divalent metals and cationic peptides catalyse RG-II dimerization via co-ordinate and ionic bonding respectively (possible and impossible, respectively, at pH 1.75). Exogenous apiose may be useful to distinguish intra- and extra-protoplasmic dimerization.

A Drimane Meroterpenoid Borate as a Synchronous Ca+ Oscillation Inhibitor from the Coral-Associated Fungus Alternaria sp. ZH-15

Territrem F (1), a drimane meroterpenoid bearing a unique borate ring system, was isolated together with its diol precursor territrem B (2) from the fungus Alternaria sp. ZH-15 associated with the soft coral Lobophytum crassum collected in the South China Sea. The structure of the new compound was elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and an X-ray single-crystal diffraction study, representing a new type of boron-containing natural product. Both compounds significantly inhibited spontaneous synchronous Ca²⁺ oscillations (SCOs) and epileptic discharges induced by 4-aminopyridine, showing the potential for antiepileptic drug research. The 5,9-boronic ester derivative of 2 did not change its SCO inhibitory activity.

Polydopamine Incorporation Enhances Cell Differentiation and Antibacterial Properties of 3D-Printed Guanosine-Borate Hydrogels for Functional Tissue Regeneration

Tissue engineering focuses on the development of materials as biosubstitutes that can be used to regenerate, repair, or replace damaged tissues. Alongside this, 3D printing has emerged as a promising technique for producing implants tailored to specific defects, which in turn increased the demand for new inks and bioinks. Especially supramolecular hydrogels based on nucleosides such as guanosine have gained increasing attention due to their biocompatibility, good mechanical characteristics, tunable and reversible properties, and intrinsic self-healing capabilities. However, most existing formulations exhibit insufficient stability, biological activity, or printability. To address these limitations, we incorporated polydopamine (PDA) into guanosine-borate (GB) hydrogels and developed a PGB hydrogel with maximal PDA incorporation and good thixotropic and printability qualities. The resulting PGB hydrogels exhibited a well-defined nanofibrillar network, and we found that PDA incorporation increased the hydrogel's osteogenic activity while having no negative effect on mammalian cell survival or migration. In contrast, antimicrobial activity was observed against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Thus, our findings suggest that our PGB hydrogel represents a significantly improved candidate as a 3D-printed scaffold capable of sustaining living cells, which may be further functionalized by incorporating other bioactive molecules for enhanced tissue integration.

Home-Based Electrochemical Rapid Sensor (HERS): A Diagnostic Tool for Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most frequently occurring vaginal infection worldwide, yet it remains significantly underdiagnosed as a majority of patients are asymptomatic. Untreated BV poses a serious threat as it increases one's risk of STI acquisition, pregnancy complications, and infertility. We aim to minimize these risks by creating a low-cost disposable sensor for at-home BV diagnosis. A clinical diagnosis of BV is most commonly made according to the Amsel criteria. In this method, a fish-like odor, caused by increased levels of trimethylamine (TMA) in vaginal fluid, is used as a key diagnostic. This paper outlines the development of a Home-Based Electrochemical Rapid Sensor (HERS), capable of detecting TMA in simulated vaginal fluid (sVF). Instead of odor-based detection of volatilized TMA, we identify TMA in trimethylammonium form by utilizing HERS and a potentiometric readout. We fabricated the ion selective electrode using a carbon-black-coated cotton string and a TMA-selective membrane consisting of calix[4]arene and sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate. When paired with a standard reference electrode, our device was able to quantify TMA concentration in deionized (DI) water, as well as sVF samples at multiple pH levels with a clinically relevant limit of detection (8.66 µM, and theoretically expected Nernstian slope of 55.14 mV/decade).

Dosimetric Study of Heat-Treated Calcium-Aluminum-Silicon Borate Dosimeter for Diagnostic Radiology Applications

The production of thermoluminescence (TL) dosimeters fabricated from B₂O₃-CaF₂-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ doped with Cu and Pr for use in diagnostic radiology is the main goal of this research. The TL samples were synthesized via the melt-quench technique processed by melting the mixture at 1200 °C for 1 h, and, after cooling, the sample thus created was divided into two samples and retreated by heating for 2 h (referred to as TLV30) and for 15 h (referred to as TLV17). SEM and EDS analyses were performed on the TL samples to confirm the preparation process and to investigate the effects of irradiation dosimetry on the TL samples. Furthermore, the TL samples were irradiated with γ-rays using a 450 Ci ¹³⁷Cs irradiator and variable X-ray beams (5-70 mGy). Two important diagnostic radiology applications were considered: CT (6-24 mGy) and mammography (2.72-10.8 mGy). Important dosimetric properties, such as the glow curves, reproducibility, dose-response linearity, energy dependence, minimum dose detectability and fading, were investigated for the synthetized samples (TLV17 and TLV30), the results of which were compared with the Harshaw TLD-100. The TLV17 dosimeter showed higher sensitivity than TLV30 in all applied irradiation procedures. The dose-response linearity coefficients of determination R² for TLV17 were higher than TLD-100 and TLV30 in some applications and were almost equal in others. The reproducibility results of TLV17, TLV30 and TLD-100 were less than 5%, which is acceptable. On the other hand, the results of the fading investigations showed that, in general, TLV17 showed less fading than TLV30. Both samples showed a significant decrease in this regard after the first day, and then the signal variation became essentially stable though with a slight decrease until the eighth day. Therefore, it is recommended to read the TL dosimeters after 24 h, as with TLD-100. The SEM images confirmed the existence of crystallization, whilst the EDS spectra confirmed the presence of the elements used for preparation. Furthermore, we noticed that TLV17 had grown dense crystals that were larger in size compared to those of TLV30, which explains the higher sensitivity in TLV17. Overall, despite the fading, TLV17 showed greater radiation sensitivity and dose-response linearity compared with TLD-100. The synthetized TL samples showed their suitability for use as dosimeters in diagnostic radiology radiation dosimetry.

Nail Mineral Composition Changes Do Not Reflect Bone Mineral Changes Caused by Boron Supplementation

Nails have been found to be a non-invasive and readily available tissue whose mineral content can change because of a change in dietary mineral intake. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine whether boron (B) supplementation would change the concentrations of some mineral elements in nails and whether these changes correlated with changes induced in bone. Female New Zealand White rabbits (aged 8 months, 2-2.5 kg weight) were fed a grain-based, high-energy diet containing 3.88 mg B/kg. The rabbits were divided into four treatment groups: controls receiving no supplemental B (N: 7; C) and three groups supplemented with 30 mg B/L in drinking water as borax decahydrate (Na₂B₄O₇∙10H₂O, N: 10; BD), borax anhydrous (Na₂B₄O₇, N: 7; Bah), and boric acid (H₃BO₃, N: 7; BA). Boron, calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sodium (Na), sulfur (S), and zinc (Zn) concentrations in nails were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Parametric and non-parametric multiple group comparisons and post hoc tests were performed and whether a correlation between nail and tibia and femur mineral elements concentrations were determined. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Boron was not detectable in control nails but was found in the nails of the three B supplemented groups. Boron supplementation markedly increased the Ca concentration in nails with the effect greatest in the BA and BD groups. The P and Mg concentrations also were increased by B supplementation with the effect most marked in the BA group. In contrast, B supplementation decreased the Na concentration with the effect most noticeable in the BD and Bah groups. The Zn concentration in nails was not affected by BA and BD supplementation but was decreased by Bah supplementation. Boron supplementation did not significantly affect the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mo, K, and S in nails. No meaningful significant correlations were found between nail mineral elements and tibia and femur mineral elements found previously. Nails can be an indicator of the response to boron supplementation but are not useful to indicate changes in mineral elements in bone in response to B supplementation.

Highly Structured Water Networks in Microhydrated Dodecaborate Clusters

We report a combined photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical investigation of a series of size-selected hydrated closo-dodecaborate clusters B₁₂X₁₂^2-·nH₂O (X = H, F, or I; n = 1-6). Distinct structural arrangements of water clusters from monomer to hexamer can be achieved by using different B₁₂X₁₂^2- bases, illustrating the evident solute specificity. Because B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonds are stronger than O···H-O hydrogen bonds in water, the added water molecules are arranged in a unified binding mode by forming highly structured water networks manipulated by B₁₂H₁₂^2-. As a comparison, the hydrated B₁₂F₁₂^2- clusters display similar water evolution for n values of 1 and 2 but different binding modes for larger clusters, while water networks in B₁₂I₁₂^2- share similarities with the free water clusters. This finding provides a consistent picture of the structural diversity of hydrogen bonding networks in microhydrated dodecaborates and a molecular-level understanding of microsolvation dynamics in aqueous borate chemistry.

Regulating the activity of boronate moiety to construct fluorescent probes for the detection of ONOO-in vitro and in vivo

Abnormal intracellular peroxynitrite (ONOO^-) concentration is related to oxidative damage, which is correlated with many pathological consequences, such as local inflammation and other diseases. In this work, a series of resorufin benzyl ether-based fluorescent probes were designed using boronate as a recognizing moiety installed on a phenyl moiety for ONOO^- detection via a self-immolation mechanism. The location of the boronate as well as the substitution patterns on the phenyl moiety were investigated and the responding behaviors of the designed probes to ONOO^-, other reactive oxygen species, and biothiols were examined. It was found that all the immolative probes were inevitably dominated by ONOO^-. Compared with other probes, p-Borate possessed favorable selectivity and high sensitivity to ONOO^-. Moreover, p-Borate was successfully used to detect ONOO^- in cells and inflamed mice.

Fabrication of Beta-Barium Borate Sensing Head for Non-Invasive Measurement of Fluidic Concentration Variations

In this study, a beta-barium borate sensing head (BBO-SH) was fabricated and evaluated for the measurements of fluidic concentration variations by using a non-invasive technique. The BBO-SH could be coupled to a fluidic container through thin interlayer water in a heterodyne interferometer based on the phase interrogation. To ensure the sensing head's stability, the package of BBO-SH uses the prism and the coverslip bounded with UV glue, which can resist environmental damage due to moisture. After each use, the sensing head could be easily cleaned. The sensitivity of the BBO-SH remained stable after repeated measurements over a period of 139 days. Finally, the achievable measurement resolutions of the concentration and refractive index are 52 ppm and 1 × 10^-6 RIU, respectively, for the sodium chloride solution. The achievable measurement resolutions of the concentration and refractive index were 55 ppm and 8.8 × 10^-7 RIU, respectively, for the hydrochloric acid solution.

Comparing Cs+ binding affinity of Keggin type polyoxometalate and sodium Tetrakis(4-florophenyl)borate in solution and from Cs-doped pure phase vermiculite

We assessed the aptitude of cesium (Cs⁺) binding by Keggin type polyoxometalates (POMs) and compared the results with the Cs⁺ binding by sodium tetrakis(4-fluorophenyl)-borate (Na-TFPB). In this work, we aimed to establish a system to treat radioactive Cs⁺ contaminated soil with POMs economically. We evaluated the effect of initial Cs⁺ concentration (0.1M) and precipitant (POMs and TFPB) concentrations (0.01M) on Cs⁺ precipitation. Our comparison of Cs⁺ precipitation by three different POMs and TFPB was obtained by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). We synthesized POMs molybdovanadophosphoric acid, H₅PMo₁₀V₂O₄₀ (MVPA), and silicotungstic acid, H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀ (STA), and used commercially available phosphotungstic acid, H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ (PTA), and TFPB. Cs-doped pure phase vermiculite was also used to demonstrate the extraction potential of Cs⁺ by TFPB, STA, and PTA. All the POMs and corresponding Cs-bound POMs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). In this simulation study, we demonstrated that the Cs⁺ removal by POMs is much more effective than TFPB and could be a promising method for the treatment of radiocesium contaminated soil.

Rheological analysis of a novel phenylboronic acid-closomer gel

This study aims to characterize the rheological behavior of a novel phenylboronic acid (PBA)-based closomer nanoconjugate (Closogel) with potential application in pharmaceutical formulation. PBA was used as a cross-linking agent and model (antiviral) drug. The PBA loaded Closogel chemical structure was analyzed by boron (¹¹B) NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The Closogel and control hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) gel were analyzed under oscillatory and continuous shear rheometry followed by mathematical modeling to characterize the gel flow behavior. The chemical analysis confirmed the existence of characteristic borate esters peaks and Boron chemical shifts within Closogel spectra. Due to its more flexible molecular structure, undiluted Closogel exhibited lower, yield stress, viscosity and relaxation time (30 Pa &163 Pa.s & 0.21 s vs 45 Pa &301 Pa.s & 0.39 s for HEC). Both Closogel and HEC gels exhibited a thixotropic behavior. The plastic undiluted and pseudoplastic 2.5 % w/v aqueous Closogels were more viscous than elastic (tan (δ) > 1) in the linear viscoelastic range. The Herschel-Bulkley model showed a significant fitting to all experimental data (R² > 0.95). The 0.25 % w/v aqueous Closogel nearly exhibited a Newtonian behavior with a flow index of 0.93. These data suggest that PBA loaded Closomer-based gels have similar rheological behavior, with lower complex modulus than that of HEC gels, and they can be a promising platform used for delivery of topical antiviral or other bioactive agents.

A Combination Therapy Using Electrical Stimulation and Adaptive, Conductive Hydrogels Loaded with Self-Assembled Nanogels Incorporating Short Interfering RNA Promotes the Repair of Diabetic Chronic Wounds

In addition to oxidative stress and impaired angiogenesis, the overexpression of metalloproteinases (MMPs) and proinflammatory cytokines, which are promoted by hyperglycemia, causes chronic inflammation in diabetic wounds. Herein, TA-siRNA nanogels are prepared for the first time on the basis of the self-assembling interaction between tannic acid (TA) and short interfering RNA (siRNA). The efficient, biodegradable nanogels are cross-linked with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), human-like collagen (HLC), TA, and borax to prepare adaptive, conductive PHTB (TA-siRNA) hydrogels. In response to high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the ROS-responsive borate ester bonds in the hydrogels are oxidized and broken, and TA-siRNA nanogels are released into cells to reduce the expression of the MMP-9. Moreover, the TA and HLC promote collagen expression, reduce inflammation, and ROS level. It is found that electrical stimulation (ES) promotes the in vivo release of TA-siRNA nanogels from PHTB (TA-siRNA) hydrogels and endocytosis of the nanogels. The combination therapy using ES and PHTB (TA-siRNA) hydrogels accelerates the healing of diabetic wounds by reducing the levels of ROS and MMP-9 and promoting the polarization of macrophages, production of collagen, and angiogenesis. This study provides insights on the design of functional gene-delivery and efficient therapeutic strategies to promote the repair of diabetic chronic wounds.
