Abstract
Ferritin L (FTL) and Ferritin H (FTH) subunits are responsible for intercellular iron storage. We previously reported increasing amounts of liver cytoplasmic and nuclear iron content during acute phase response (APR). Aim of the present study is to demonstrate intracellular localization of ferritin subunits in liver compared with extra hepatic organs of rat under physiological and acute phase conditions. Rats were administered turpentine-oil (TO) intramuscularly to induce a sterile abscess (acute-phase-model) and sacrificed at different time points. Immunohistochemistry was performed utilizing horse-reddish-peroxidise conjugated secondary antibody on 4μm thick section. Liver cytoplasmic and nuclear protein were used for Western blot analysis. By means of immunohistology, FTL was detected in cytoplasm while a strong nuclear positivity for FTH was evident in the liver. Similarly, in heart, spleen and brain FTL was detected mainly in the cytoplasm while FTH demonstrated intense nuclear and a weak cytoplasmic expression. Western blot analysis of cytoplasmic and nuclear fractions from liver, heart, spleen and brain further confirmed mainly cytoplasmic expression of FTL in contrast to the nuclear and cytoplasmic expression of FTH. The data presented demonstrate the differential localization of FTL and FTH within hepatic and extra hepatic organs being FTL predominantly in the cytoplasm while FTH predominantly in nucleus.

Contact dermatitis to Vicks VapoRub. Dermatitis 2010; 21:167-169. [PMID: 20487662] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 05/29/2023]
Abstract
Vicks VapoRub (VVR) is a commonly used inhalant ointment that helps relieve symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. It contains several plant substances, including turpentine oil, eucalyptus oil, and cedar leaf oil, which can potentially irritate or sensitize the skin, as well as camphor, menthol, nutmeg oil, and thymol. Although many reports describe allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to the various constituents in VVR ointment, there are no cases of VVR directly causing ACD. We present a case of a patient who developed an ACD secondary to application of her VVR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Turpentine is an oleoresin obtained from various species of pine. It contains a volatile oil (oil of turpentine) which is responsible for its properties and this is the form generally used. Opportunity for contact with turpentine is widespread. It is universally used as a solvent to dissolve and thin lacquers, varnishes and paints. It is also an ingredient in many liniments and cold remedies. Turpentine is regarded as both a local irritant and a sensitizer. Cases of allergic contact dermatitis in painters, mechanics, shoe repairers and home decorators have been reported. CASE REPORT We report a case of a non-professional painter who developed a contact allergic dermatitis due to his exposure to turpentine while doing oil-painting as a hobby. DISCUSSION Dermatitis is one of the biggest dangers of working with art materials and occupational contact dermatitis is often detected on the hands of the painters. Solvents are indispensable and turpentine is the most important and the traditional one used in oil-painting. Contact allergy to oil of turpentine was reported to have become rare in Europe but over the last few years, increased rates of turpentine sensitization have been reported.

Patch test results with patients' own perfumes, deodorants and shaving lotions: results of the IVDK 1998-2002. J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol 2007; 21:374-9. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assessment of the value of patch testing patients' own perfumes, eau de toilette, deodorants and shaving lotions with regard to diagnosing contact allergy to fragrances, and an analysis of the spectrum of concurrent patch test reactions to single fragrance allergens. STUDY DESIGN Data of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK; http://www.ivdk.org) regarding patch test results with above products brought in by the patient, considered as possible cause of contact dermatitis, were retrospectively analysed. Between 1998 and 2002, 1468 patients were patch tested with 2557 single products (deodorants, n = 1094; eau de toilette, n = 598; perfume, n = 530; and pre- or after-shave, n = 325; remainder not classifiable), mostly 'as is'. RESULTS Positive reactions were observed in 129 patients (to 191 products). In 58 of these patients, no further patch test reactions to the fragrance mix (FM-I), Myroxylon pereirae resin (balsam of Peru) or 4-(4-hydroxy-4-methyl-pentyl)-3-cyclohexencarboxaldehyde (e.g. Lyral(R)) were found. A strong association between contact sensitivity to the above commercial allergens and positive reactions to products was observed. Some single compounds such as ylang-ylang oil, propolis and especially oak moss absolute are important allergens in the 'perfume-positive' subgroup, but less in a subgroup positive to own deodorants. DISCUSSION Patch testing this scope of products, brought in by the patient, can be regarded as a simple, safe and effective method to diagnose clinically relevant contact sensitization - the more so, as the composition of such products is ever-changing, and the sensitivity of established 'screening allergens' is thus insufficient.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the effect of glutamine on intestinal mucosa integrity, glutathione stores and acute phase response in protein-depleted rats during an inflammatory shock.
METHODS: Plasma acute phase proteins (APP), jejunal APP mRNA levels, liver and jejunal glutathione concentrations were measured before and one, three and seven days after turpentine injection in 4 groups of control, protein-restricted, protein-restricted rats supplemented with glutamine or protein powder. Bacterial translocation in mesenteric lymph nodes and intestinal morphology were also assessed.
RESULTS: Protein deprivation and turpentine injection significantly reduced jejunal villus height, and crypt depths. Mucosal glutathione concentration significantly decreased in protein-restricted rats. Before turpentine oil, glutamine supplementation restored villus heights and glutathione concentration (3.24 ± 1.05 vs 1.72 ± 0.46 μmol/g tissue, P < 0.05) in the jejunum, whereas in the liver glutathione remained low. Glutamine markedly increased jejunal α1-acid glycoprotein mRNA level after turpentine oil but did not affect its plasma concentration. Bacterial translocation in protein-restricted rats was not prevented by glutamine or protein powder supplementation.
CONCLUSION: Glutamine restored gut glutathione stores and villus heights in malnourished rats but had no preventive effect on bacterial translocation in our model.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Salvia officinalis L. tincture on acute inflammation induced with oil of turpentine. MATERIALS AND METHODS Oil of turpentine (i.m. 0.6 ml/100 g b.w.) was injected into male Wistar rats right hind paw. Salviae folium tincture and diclofenac as positive control (30 mg/100 g b.w.) were administrated i.p. The effects were evaluated by measuring total leukocyte count and differential leukocyte count expressed as a percentage, a test of in vitro phagocytosis and evaluation of nitric oxide synthesis by measuring the metabolites: nitrites and nitrates. RESULTS Salvia officinalis tincture significantly reduced the total leukocyte and monocytes percentages and the activation of circulating phagocytes. NO synthesis had a slight decrease. Salvia officinalis tincture had a smaller inhibitory effect than diclofenac. CONCLUSIONS Salvia officinalis tincture had antiinflammatory effects by reducing marrow acute phase response and NO synthesis.

Abstract
Pine wood is one of the most used raw products in furniture manufacturing in Europe. High concentrations of colophony and turpentine can be extracted from pine resins. A 45-year-old woman developed a contact dermatitis of the face and hands due to a sensitization to colophony and turpentine after she had bought untreated pine chairs. The increased use of untreated pine in the furniture industry might result in an increase of colophony and turpentine-induced contact allergies. Therefore, the slogan "untreated=harmless" should be considered critically in such cases.

Personal and Occupational Exposure to Organic Solvents and Risk of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) in Women (United States). Cancer Causes Control 2005; 16:1215-24. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The authors assessed whether home and occupational exposure to organic solvents is associated with risk of NHL in women. METHODS A population-based, incidence case-control study was conducted in upstate New York, involving 376 NHL cases and 463 population controls selected from the Medicare beneficiary files and State driver's license records. Exposure information was obtained by telephone interview. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using an unconditional logistic regression model, adjusting for a number of risk factors for NHL. RESULTS Overall, history of exposure to organic solvents was not associated with the risk of NHL. A statistically significant increase in risk associated with occupational exposure was observed only for the subjects whose first exposure occurred before 1970 (OR=1.87, 95% CI 1.03-3.40). When occupational and home exposures to paint thinners/turpentine were combined and analyzed together, the risk of NHL associated with any exposure, compared to no exposure at either job or home, was a statistically significantly increased (OR=1.46, 95% CI: 1.05-2.03). This observation was more pronounced for B-cell lymphoma and for low-grade lymphoma with ORs of 1.52 (95 CI: 1.08-2.14) and 2.20 (95% CI; 1.42-3.41), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The results of this case-control study do support of a major role of organic solvents in the development of NHL among women currently living in the US. However, relatively intensive exposure in past occupations and use of paint thinners/turpentine may deserve further investigation.

Abstract
Increasing frequencies of sensitization to the fragrance mix (FM) have been acknowledged as a serious problem for many years. It is well known that the single compounds (SCs) of the FM contribute differently to the FM patch rest reactions. In this study, we were interested in the time trends of the FM, the SCs, Myroxylon pereirae resin (MP; balsam of Peru) and oil of turpentine (OT) as possible further indicators of perfume allergy and analysed the data collected by the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology multicentre project from 1996 to 2002. During the study period (1996-2002), the FM [8% petrolatum (pet.)], MP (25% pet.) and OT (1% pet.) were tested in 59,298, 59,334 and 59,478 patients, respectively. SCs were tested in a selected group of patients, ranging from n = 1083 to n = 1924 per year. A significant increase in the proportions of patients with positive reactions to FM, MP and OT between 1996 and 1998 is noted, and a significant decline from 1999 to 2002 (Cochrane Armitage trend test, P < 0.0001). The highest frequency of sensitization to the FM was 13.1% in 1999, and the lowest 7.8% in 2002. The number of concomitant reactions to OT, a surrogate marker for terpenes, in FM-positive patients was significantly increased between 1997 and 1999. Reactions to SCs in FM-positive patients were observed in 29.9% (oak moss absolute) to 5.9% (geraniol). There was no time trend in reactions to SCs, although the relative share was increased for isoeugenol, cinnamic aldehyde and geraniol in 1999. In summary, we report for the first time, a significant decline in sensitization to the FM, very probably due to a reduced exposure (less potent allergens used in fine fragrances, possibly less use of natural ingredient-based cosmetics and lowered use concentration of important fragrance allergens). The differences in ranking of SCs could stimulate (a) a redefinition of the FM and (b) a differentiated preventive and regulatory approach, with oak moss and isoeugenol being regulated strictly by prohibition, concentration limits further reconsidered and/or health warnings and clearly less noxious substances like geraniol treated less restrictively.

Parental occupational exposures to chemicals and incidence of neuroblastoma in offspring. Am J Epidemiol 2001; 154:106-14. Abstract
To evaluate the effects of parental occupational chemical exposures on incidence of neuroblastoma in offspring, the authors conducted a multicenter case-control study, using detailed exposure information that allowed examination of specific chemicals. Cases were 538 children aged 19 years who were newly diagnosed with confirmed neuroblastoma in 1992-1994 and were registered at any of 139 participating hospitals in the United States and Canada. One age-matched control for each of 504 cases was selected through random digit dialing. Self-reported exposures were reviewed by an industrial hygienist, and improbable exposures were reclassified. Effect estimates were calculated using unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for child's age and maternal demographic factors. Maternal exposures to most chemicals were not associated with neuroblastoma. Paternal exposures to hydrocarbons such as diesel fuel (odds ratio (OR) = 1.5; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8, 2.6), lacquer thinner (OR = 3.5; 95% CI: 1.6, 7.8), and turpentine (OR = 10.4; 95% CI: 2.4, 44.8) were associated with an increased incidence of neuroblastoma, as were exposures to wood dust (OR = 1.5; 95% CI: 0.8, 2.8) and solders (OR = 2.6; 95% CI: 0.9, 7.1). The detailed exposure information available in this study has provided additional clues about the role of parental occupation as a risk factor for neuroblastoma.

Cytochrome P450 inactivation by serum from humans with a viral infection and serum from rabbits with a turpentine-induced inflammation: the role of cytokines. Br J Pharmacol 2000; 130:1777-84. Abstract
Serum from humans with an acute upper respiratory viral infection and from rabbits with turpentine-induced inflammation reduce the catalytic activity of hepatic cytochrome P450 (P450). The aim of this study was to identify the serum mediators responsible for the decrease in P450 activity. Rabbit and human sera were fractionated by size exclusion chromatography and the fractions tested for their ability to reduce the activity and amount of P450 after 4 h of incubation with hepatocytes from turpentine-treated rabbits (H(INF)). Rabbit and human sera decreased P450 activity by around 40% without any change in the amount of CYP1A1 and 1A2 apoproteins. In rabbit serum, the fraction containing proteins of M(r) 23-15 kDa decreased P450 content by 41%, but did not alter the amount of the apoproteins. Anti-IL-6 antibody added to the M(r) 23-15 kDa fraction restored P450 content to 97% of control values, while anti-IL-1beta, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma antibodies had no effect. Supporting the role of IL-6, incubation of H(INF) in the presence of IL-6 for 4 h reduced P450 content by 40%. In human serum, the fraction containing proteins of M(r) >95 kDa lowered P450 content by 43% without modifying the amounts of CYP1A1/2. Neutralization experiments showed that IFN-gamma, IL-6, and IL-1beta contributed to the decrease in P450 content. In conclusion, the present results demonstrate that IL-6, and IFN-gamma, IL-6 and IL-1beta are the serum mediators released in vivo by a turpentine-induced inflammatory reaction in the rabbit and an upper respiratory viral infection in humans, respectively, inactivating hepatic P450.

Increase in sensitization to oil of turpentine: recent data from a multicenter study on 45,005 patients from the German-Austrian Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK). Contact Dermatitis 2000; 42:68-73. Abstract
Contact allergy to oil of turpentine was reported to have become rare. However, the evaluation of standardized data of 45,005 patients tested 1992-1997 in 30 Dermatological Centers associated with the German-Austrian Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) showed an increase in positive patch test reactions to turpentine from 0.5% during the years 1992-1995, up to 1.7% in 1996 and 3.1% in 1997. In particular, 17,347 patients tested in 1996-1997 were evaluated in detail by comparing 431 individuals with positive patch test reactions with the rest of the group found negative to turpentine. Using the so-called MOAHLFA index, the following characteristics were shown. Turpentine allergy (a) was found to be significantly less frequent in men and in patients with occupational dermatitis, (b) showed no difference in its association with atopic dermatitis, (c) patients with turpentine allergy had significantly less symptoms of the hands, more symptoms of the legs or in the face and (d) were significantly more often aged over 60 years. Also, patients sensitized to turpentine had increased rates of additional sensitizations. The definite reason for the increase in turpentine sensitization in the population tested here is not clear. Therefore, a detailed exposure analysis is necessary; the new increase in turpentine allergies may be due to popular topical remedies or household chemicals.

The influence of cervical sympathetic neurons on parathyroid hormone and calcitonin release in the rat: independence of pineal mediation. J Pineal Res 1997; 22:9-15. Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the involvement of the pineal gland in modulation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin release found in rats after changes in activity of cervical sympathetic nerves. The response of serum PTH to a hypocalcemia produced by EDTA injection, and of serum calcitonin to a hypercalcemia produced by administering calcium chloride, were studied in rats at the time of the wallerian degeneration of regional sympathetic nerves (i.e., 16 hr after superior cervical ganglionectomy, SCGx). Rats received a pinealectomy or its sham-operation 4 days before SCGx. During wallerian degeneration of nerves after SCGx, a higher hypocalcemia and a lower PTH response were found as compared to sham-SCGx rats, regardless of whether the pineal gland was present or not. When the response of calcitonin to a bolus injection of calcium chloride was assessed, rats subjected to SCGx 16 hr earlier showed a depressed calcitonin release, which was also unaffected after pinealectomy. To a similar extent in pinealectomized and sham-pinealectomized rats, a mild stress given by the subcutaneous injection of turpentine oil brought about a greater hypocalcemia after EDTA, concomitantly with a higher PTH secretory response. In turpentine oil-injected rats, the rise of serum calcitonin was significantly greater than that of vehicle-treated rats, regardless of pineal presence. The results further indicate that cervical autonomic nerves constitute a pathway through which the brain modulates calcium homeostasis and do not support the participation of the pineal gland in short term changes of PTH or calcitonin release.

IL-1 type I receptor mediates acute phase response to turpentine, but not lipopolysaccharide, in mice. THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY 1996; 271:R1668-75. Abstract
This study examined the role of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) type I receptor (IL-1RtI) in the acute phase response (APR) to inflammation in mice. Turpentine (100 microliters/mouse) injected subcutaneously induced fever, lethargy, body weight loss, and anorexia in IL-1RtI wild-type mice. Knockout mice lacking the IL-1RtI were resistant to these effects of turpentine, supporting a role for this receptor in the APR to local inflammation. The intraperitoneal injection of a low (50 micrograms/kg) or high (2.5 mg/kg) dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced similar APRs in IL-1RtI wild-type and knockout mice. IL-1RtI knockout mice were resistant to the APR induced by peripherally injected murine IL-1 beta, suggesting that it is not the interaction of endogenous IL-1 beta with IL-1RtII that induces an APR to LPS in these mice. We speculate that the absence of IL-1RtI in these knockout mice results in the sensitization of other cytokine pathways to mediate the APR to LPS.

Abstract
Allergy to oil of turpentine has diminished largely due to the use of cheaper substitutes in many occupations. However, 2 particular areas still reliant on real oil of turpentine are those of the perfume industry and ceramic decoration. We report 24 cases of hand dermatitis in pottery workers involved in ceramic decoration, paintresses, liners, gilders, enamellers and a fine china painter, seen in a 6-month period following a change from Portuguese to Indonesian turpentine, of whom 14 were sensitive to Indonesian turpentine, 8 to alpha-pinene, 4 to delta-3-carene and 2 positive to turpentine peroxides. Previous reports suggest that delta-3-carene is the main allergen and reports of sensitivity to alpha-pinene in the absence of sensitivity to turpentine peroxide, in particular to the hydroperoxide of delta-3-carene, are few. Turpentine allergy continues to be a problem in the pottery industry and is more common than allergy to the heavy metals of the colours used in ceramic decoration. alpha-Pinene, an unusual allergen, appears to be the most common in our area. Reversion to Portuguese turpentine seems to have alleviated the problem.

Abstract
Clinical diagnosis of a chemical burn of the oral mucous membranes may be a diagnostic challenge. This article's intent is to illustrate the typical appearance of a chemical mucosal burn and to increase awareness of the various compounds which, when in contact with the mucous membranes, can result in a burn. The authors present a case involving a self-inflicted chemical injury of the oral mucous membranes and illustrate how the submission of an easily-obtained tissue specimen for pathologic examination may aid in the diagnosis. Because these superficial tissues can be obtained and submitted without the need for local anesthetic, pathologic examination is a quick, easy, and valuable diagnostic test when a patient's history is difficult to obtain or intentionally misleading.

Differential induction of nitric oxide synthase in hepatocytes during endotoxemia and the acute-phase response. ARCHIVES OF SURGERY (CHICAGO, ILL. : 1960) 1994; 129:165-71. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent biologic mediator produced by hepatocytes following exposure to cytokines and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). These cytokines are also known to regulate induction of the hepatic acute-phase response. The objective of this study was to determine whether inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), the enzyme that produces NO, is expressed as part of the hepatic acute-phase response. DESIGN The gene expression for inducible NOS (iNOS) as well as alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), an established acute-phase reactant, was measured by Northern blot analysis in rat hepatocytes in vivo during endotoxemia (LPS injection) and during the acute-phase response produced by hindlimb turpentine injection. Hepatocyte iNOS messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were correlated with iNOS activity and circulating plasma nitrite and nitrate levels. In vitro, iNOS and AGP mRNA levels were determined in cultured hepatocytes stimulated with interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), or dexamethasone. RESULTS The AGP mRNA levels were increased in vivo following both LPS and turpentine injection, while iNOS expression was induced only by LPS injection. Hepatocyte iNOS activity and plasma nitrite and nitrate levels also increased after LPS treatment. In vitro, the cytokine combination IL-6, IL-1 beta, and TNF-alpha induced hepatocyte iNOS expression but had minimal effects on AGP in the absence of dexamethasone. Addition of dexamethasone alone markedly increased AGP mRNA levels, with further increases seen with TNF-alpha or IL-1 beta addition. In contrast, dexamethasone decreased iNOS expression. CONCLUSION The results show that hepatocyte iNOS expression is not part of the acute-phase response induced by remote inflammation and indicates that iNOS is differentially regulated from the acute-phase reactant, AGP.

Abstract
We have previously reported that isoproterenol induces type 2 salivary cystatin in both submandibular glands and kidney tubule cells of rats but not in any other organs examined. In the present study, we investigated whether this salivary protein is induced in other conditions that show kidney tubule injury. Immunocytochemistry, using a monospecific antiserum to this cystatin, revealed specific staining within the proximal tubule epithelium of the cortex as well as in the inner and outer stripe of the medulla of immunologically and chemically injured rats. Cystatin could not be detected in kidneys from healthy rats by means of immunocytochemistry. Weak staining was found in 3/3 kidneys of rats treated with turpentine and in 5/5 animals treated with potassium dichromate. In rats treated with puromycin, cystatin could not be demonstrated in 5/5 animals having proteinuria of less than 100 mg/24 h; however, moderate staining was observed in 4/5 puromycin-treated rats having proteinuria greater than 100 mg/24 h. In Heymann nephritis, cystatin was present in 7/31 kidneys with proteinuria lasting 6 to 15 weeks and in none (0/7) with proteinuria of shorter duration. Strong staining was also observed in 10/10 kidneys from rats with moderate-to-severe chronic serum sickness. This study shows that elaboration of type 2 cystatin in rats is not limited to salivary glands and, with our previous study, suggests that induction of this cysteine inhibitor may represent a local response to generalized tissue injury in both submandibular and renal tissues. These findings further demonstrate that induction of cystatin in salivary glands is not unique to these glands and suggest that induction of this cysteine proteinase inhibitor may represent a local response to tissue injury caused by diverse mechanisms.

Abstract
This study on 100 rats, divided into five equal groups, has shown that chronic distant sepsis promotes occlusion of microvascular anastomoses to a significantly greater extent than aseptic inflammation, transient bacteraemia and even local infection. This may be related to the significant increase in the number of platelets in the group with distant sepsis.

Abstract
The synthesis of proteoheparan sulfate in hepatocytes is positively regulated under acute-phase conditions produced either by turpentine or deep back incision. In both cases the incorporation of [35S]sulfate and [14C]glucosamine is doubled during a 4-h incubation period if compared with control rat hepatocytes. Neither the fractional secretion rate of heparan sulfate into the medium (less than 0.1 of cell-associated glycosaminoglycans) nor the composition of newly formed proteoglycans in hepatocytes are affected during acute phase reaction.

Abstract
A general review is given of airborne-induced contact dermatoses, particularly of the irritant and allergenic types. Because the reports in the literature often omit the term airborne, 12 volumes of Contact Dermatitis (January 1975-July 1985) were screened, and the cases cited were classified in function of the anamnesis, lesion locations, causative irritants and allergens, and other factors. The present article also discusses differential diagnoses, in particular with regard to contact dermatitis of the face, ears, and neck. Finally, seven case reports of occupational and nonoccupational contact dermatitis problems caused by airborne agents are presented. In some of the cases the allergens have not been mentioned in published literature previously.

Abstract
Oil of turpentine is still a common allergen in Portugal although it does not contain delta 3-carene, as ascertained by gas chromatography. Patch tests with 6 terpenes on 22 patients revealed that 17 were allergic to alpha-pinene and 15 to dipentene; 12 were allergic to both. 4 patients were sensitive to delta 3-carene, 3 to alpha-terpineol and 2 to beta-pinene. These results explain the incidence of allergy to oil of turpentine in Portugal.

Sequential morphological and quantitative changes in blood and bone marrow neutrophils in dogs with acute inflammation. Abstract
Blood and bone marrow morphology were studied sequentially in dogs during experimental inflammation induced by intramuscular injection of turpentine. Depletion of the bone marrow storage pool of mature neutrophils and an increase in mitotic activity and number of early granulocyte precursors were evident within 24 hours. During the next three days, intense granulocytic hyperplasia resulted in replenishment of the bone marrow storage pool. Neutrophils with foamy vacuolation and increased basophilia of the cytoplasm (toxic neutrophils) were present in the blood by eight hours postinjection. The number of toxic neutrophils paralleled the intensity of clinical signs and changes in rectal temperature but not the number of band neutrophils. This indicates that changes in number of toxic neutrophils in sequential leukograms can be a prognostic indicator in dogs with severe inflammation.

Abstract
A toolsetter developed occupational asthma due to the oil mist generated by his lathe on which it was used as a coolant. The diagnosis was confirmed by serial measurements of peak expiratory flow at home and work, including a prolonged period away from work. Occupational type bronchial provocation tests were performed using the whole emulsified oil and its components separately. He reacted specifically to the whole emulsified oil and to the reodorant, a pine oil preparation. He also reacted to colophony, a constituent of the emulsifier.

Effects of the anti-inflammatory agents indomethacin, metiamide and acetylsalicylic acid on the induction of hyperplasia in hamster cheek-pouch epithelium and ear epidermis. Abstract
Previous studies have shown that agents such as indomethacin and hydrocortisone act to reduce the level of epidermal hyperplasia produced by various chemical, but little information is available about the effects of such anti-inflammatory agents on the induction of hyperplasia in oral mucosa. Hamster cheek-pouch epithelium and ear epidermis were treated with indomethacin, metiamide and acetylsalicylic acid prior to treatment with turpentine, podophyllin or TPA. The levels of hyperplasia induced were monitored by rates of epithelial glycolysis, protein synthesis and mitosis. The response of the metabolic assays to epinephrine was also examined. Alone, turpentine, podophyllin and TPA each caused a 3-5 fold increase in the metabolic assays and loss of the normal tissue response to epinephrine. Tissues pretreated with indomethacin showed significant reductions in the levels of hyperplasia produced and they retained a normal response to epinephrine. No reduction in hyperplasia was observed following pretreatment with acetylsalicylic acid, an alternative inhibitor or prostaglandin synthesis or with metiamide, a histamine blocker. The results indicate that the production of epithelial hyperplasia by turpentine, podophyllin and TPA can be inhibited by indomethacin.

Abstract
Cats with induced sterile abscesses developed a hematologic disorder consistent with anemia of inflammation. Serum iron concentrations decreased while the abscess was present, but erythropoietin concentrations did not change significantly. Cobalt administration to control (healthy) cats resulted in polycythemia, reticulocytosis, and hyperferremia. Cats with abscesses responded to cobalt similarly; however, magnitudes of the polycythemia and reticulocytosis were less. Constant infusion of ferric citrate (IV) into cats with sterile abscesses maintained serum iron concentration in the normal to high range. The iron infusion did not prevent the anemia, but did enable the bone marrow to respond to the anemia.

Abstract
Erythrocyte survival was investigated in healthy cats and in cats with sterile abscesses. Erythrocyte survival time in cats with sterile abscesses was found to be significantly reduced. The erythrocyte destruction appeared to be the major factor in the early stages of anemia of inflammation.

Abstract
Comparative results between positive patch tests found during the periods 1968-1974 and 1975-1981 are presented. The number of sensitised patients to nickel, chromate and Peru balsam has significantly increased. On the other hand, the number of turpentine-oil-positive patch tests has strongly decreased. This mirrors the drop in the imported quantities of this product. A schema concerning factors influencing the apparent allergenicity is given.

Effect of adrenalectomy on cadmium- and turpentine-induced hepatic synthesis of metallothionein and alpha 2-macrofetoprotein in the rat. Inflammation 1981; 5:153-64. Abstract
Recent reports have strongly implicated glucocorticoids in the induction of hepatic metallothionein synthesis and hypozincemia which occurs in certain pathophysiologic conditions. Studies were performed in rats to determine the effect of adrenalectomy and glucocorticoid treatment on the hepatic accumulation of metallothionein subsequent to the administration of cadmium and turpentine, two diverse substances known to induce hypozincemia and hepatic synthesis of metallothionein as well as alpha 2-macrofetoprotein in intact rats. By 24 h, both substances induced significant hypozincemia, hepatic metallothionein accumulation, and a severe tissue inflammatory response in adrenalectomized rats. Adrenalectomy only prevented the increase in plasma alpha 2-macrofetoprotein concentration. Results indicate that hepatic synthesis of alpha 2-macrofetoprotein, but not metallothionein, is mediated by adrenal hormones. Thus, glucocorticoids do not play a "vital" role in hepatic metallothionein accumulation or hypozincemia induced by inflammatory stress, as previously postulated.

Cumulative effect of X-ray radiation and inflammatory reaction on the circadian rhythm of tyrosine aminotransferase in the liver of mice. ACTA PHYSIOLOGICA POLONICA 1980; 31:131-9. Abstract
The activity of tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) in the liver of mice subjected simultaneously to ionizing radiation and to local inflammatory process showed in the first 24 hours of the experiment statistically significant changes resulting from summation of the harmful effects of both factors. In the second 24-hour period an evident tendency was observed for return of a normal circadian rhythm of the enzyme. This points to presence of an endogenous mechanism of suppression of the manifestations of significant desynchronization of the circadian rhythm. The paper contains also a trial of mathematical analysis of changes in TAT activity in the circadian rhythm, a description and analysis of the suppression process, qualitative and quantitative determination of the phenomenon of cumulation of the effects of powerful stress factors acting on the animal organism. The obtained results were compared with the results of investigations of TAT activity changes obtained in the case of separate application of the stress factors selected for this experiment.

Abstract
Oil of turpentine has become an infrequent allergen because of its replacement by the petroleum product white spirit, its deliberate exclusion from industrial products, and because the balsam oils used nowadays do not contain the sensitiser delta 3-carene. On the basis of the generally low incidence of sensitisation being currently recorded, the International Contact Dermatitis Group recommend that oil of turpentine be removed from standard patch test series.

Abstract
After a dental operation a former laboratory technician was referred to our clinic because of swelling of his tongue, lips, and gingival mucosa. Patch testing with the ICDRG standard test battery gave positive reactions to colophony, balsam of Peru, and turpentine peroxides. Further patch testing revealed hypersensitivity to peppermint oil (an ingredient of several dental preparations) due to the sensitizing properties of three ingredients: alpha-pinene, limonene, and phellandrene. These compounds also occur in turpentine oil, a substance used in the patient's laboratory.
