Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine which cortical areas are activated in relation to attention to a three-dimensional (3D) structure of a surface based on shading. Cortical activities were examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging while subjects discriminated whether the central part of the surface protruded or was recessed based on shading without any binocular disparity cues. Relatively broad cortical areas including both dorsal and ventral visual pathways were recruited when shading was used as a crucial cue for the perception of the 3D structure of a surface. In these cortical areas, however, the right intraparietal area was shown to be commonly activated in all subjects and in all sessions by multisubject conjunction analysis. These results strongly suggest that the intraparietal area plays an important role in perception of the 3D structure of a surface, even when based only on monocular depth cues without binocular disparity cues.

Abstract
We screened for mutations in the gene of insulin-sensitive phosphodiesterase 3B (PDE3B), which regulates antilipolytic actions of insulin via reduction of intracellular cyclic AMP levels, in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and lipoatrophic diabetes mellitus using single-stranded conformation polymorphism analysis and Southern analysis and investigated frequencies of variable number of tandem repeats. A silent polymorphism at the Arg463 codon (AGG-->AGA) in exon 4 was identified after examining all 16 exons and exon-intron splicing junctions of the gene. This polymorphism was found in 53 of 100 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 2 of 5 lipoatrophic diabetic patients and 24 of 50 control subjects, without any significant difference in allele frequency between groups. An EcoRI restriction fragment length polymorphism was identified in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and control subjects, again with no differences in occurrence. The allelic distribution of two polymorphic tandem repeats sequences in introns 5 and 12 of the gene did not differ significantly between patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and control subjects. In conclusion, alterations in the PDE3B gene are unlikely to contribute importantly to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus or lipoatrophic diabetes mellitus in Japan.

Abstract
Activation of phosphodiesterase (PDE) 3B reduces free fatty acid output from adipocytes. Induction of PDE3B gene expression by adipocyte differentiation could improve insulin resistance. To examine whether the PDE3B promoter is activated by this differentiation, the 5' flanking sequence of the mouse PDE3B gene was isolated. The transcription initiation site was determined to be located 195 bp upstream of the translation start site. No putative binding site for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma was found within 2 kb upstream of the transcription initiation site. This region had promoter activity, which was further activated on adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells.

Abstract
Among 39 patients with pyogenic liver abscess who were admitted to our institute, six (15%) were infected by Streptococcus milleri (S. milleri). We investigated clinical features of these six patients. There were five males and one female, aged 43-81 years old (mean: 61). Five of the six patients had underlying illness. All patients had fever, and three of them complained of abdominal pain. Three patients had mixed infections; particularly intraoral anaerobes, Fusobacterium, were found in two of the three patients. There were no differences in clinical features between patients with S. milleri liver abscess and those with other bacterial liver abscess. In conclusion, on selecting antibiotics for the treatment of liver abscess, it is necessary to consider the S. milleri and intraoral anaerobes.

Abstract
The Spemann-Mangold organizer is required in amphibian embryos to coordinate cell fate specification, differentiation of dorsal cell types and morphogenetic movements at early stages of development. A great number of genes are specifically expressed within the organizer, most of them encoding secreted proteins and transcription factors. The challenge is now to uncover genetic cascades and networks of interactions between these genes, in order to understand how the organizer functions. The task is immense and requires loss-of-function approaches to test the requirement for a given factor in a specific process. For transcription factors, it is possible to generate inhibitory molecules by fusing the DNA binding region to a repressor or activator domain, which should in principle antagonize the activity of the endogenous protein at the level of the DNA targets. We used this strategy to design activated and inhibitory forms of the LIM homeodomain transcription factor Lim1, which is encoded by an organizer gene involved in head development, as revealed by analyses of knockout mice. We found that Lim1 is a transcriptional activator, and can trigger dorso-anterior development upon ventral expression of hyperactive forms, in which Ldb1 is fused to Lim1. Using inhibitory Lim1 fusion proteins, we found that Lim1, or genes closely related to it, is required for head formation as well as for notochord development. Co-expression experiments revealed that Lim1 is required downstream of the early organizer factor Siamois, first, to establish the genetic program of the organizer and second, to mediate the action of organizer agents that are responsible for blocking ventralizing activities in the gastrula.

Abstract
Titanium (Ti) and Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy were examined for their polishing behaviour by conducting manually controlled polishing tests using five dental abrasives [carborundum point (CR) and silicone points (R1 and R2)] driven by a high torque micromotor with rotational speeds ranging from 2000 to 15 000 r.p.m. Polishing of Ti resulted in less volume of removal upon polishing, a rougher surface and larger loss of abrasives, compared with polishing of Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy. Polishing of Ti with a rotational speed of 15 000 r.p.m. led to the largest volume of removal upon polishing, whilst that of 10 000 r.p.m. produced the optimal volume for Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy. It was concluded that Ti was much more difficult to polish, requiring special care (e.g. frequent exchange of abrasives). Development of new abrasives for polishing Ti is required.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) produced within the respiratory tract can stimulate ciliary motility of airway epithelial cells and hence mucociliary transport. In this study, to determine the role of NO in mucociliary dysfunction in sinobronchial syndrome (SBS), we measured NO concentrations in the exhaled air by chemiluminescence analyzer and nasal clearance time (NCT) by saccharin test. Exhaled NO concentrations in patients with SBS were 39% of those in healthy nonsmokers and 55% of those in healthy smokers. The patients also showed prolonged NCT compared with healthy subjects, and there was a significant negative correlation between exhaled NO concentrations and NCT. Furthermore, concentrations of chloride (Cl) in the sputum supernatant were higher in SBS patients than in healthy subjects, and there was a significant negative correlation between sputum Cl concentrations and exhaled NO concentrations. These results suggest that airway mucociliary clearance is impaired in patients with SBS and that this impairment might result from the reduced production of NO and the impaired availability of the molecule in the mucociliary apparatus.

Abstract
Cytotoxicity of Ni ions on three fibroblasts such as L929, Balb/3T3 clone A31 and MC3T3-E1 were examined by cell count (CC) and Neutral Red assay (NR). Three cells were incubated for 6 days in 1 ml DME medium containing Ni ions which ranged from 0 to 2 mM/l. The results clarified that Ni ions had dose-dependent cytotoxicity. L929 possessed the largest TC50 values (the amount of Ni ion that caused 50% cell death or 50% cell viability) of 0.12 mM/l (CC) and 0.32 mM/l (NR), and Balb/3T3 clone A31 had the least values of 0.05 mM/l (CC) and 0.09 mM/l (NR), whilst MC3T3-E1 had the intermediate values of 0.08 mM/l (CC) and 0.15 mM/l (NR). The dissolution of Ni ions from Ni-containing metallic restorations must be lower than these concentration levels so that body tissues might not be severely damaged.

Abstract
The LIM class homeodomain protein Xlim-1 is specifically expressed in the organizer and later in the notochord in Xenopus. By seeking genes which are activated by Xlim-1 in animal caps, we isolated a gene which encodes a protein highly homologous to human PA26-T2, a p53-inducible nuclear factor, which we refer to as XPA26. Northern blot analysis showed that maternal transcripts of XPA26 are detected at cleavage stages and reduced during gastrulation. Whole-mount in situ hybridization showed that zygotic transcripts of XPA26 were initially detected in the anterior portion of developing notochord at neurula stages, and later in the entire notochord except its posterior region at tailbud stages. Thus the zygotic expression of XPA26 was detected exclusively in the notochord.

Abstract
To investigate LIM gene function in the rat cerebellar system, we analyzed expression and regulation of the rat homologue of frog Xlim-1 (rlim-1) in vivo and in cultured cells. In developing cerebellum, peak levels of rlim-1 mRNA at postnatal day 8 (p8) are coincident with the peak period of granule cell proliferation. Analysis of rlim-1 protein with a specific antibody showed that expression was also maximal at p8. In situ hybridization showed that at p8 rlim-1 mRNA was expressed in Purkinje and granule cells. Both the proliferative and the premigratory granule cells in the external germinal zone displayed high levels of rlim-1 mRNA expression. Immunocytochemical staining demonstrated that at p8 rlim-1 protein was also present in proliferative and premigratory granule cells. In adult cerebellum (p30), rlim-1 mRNA and protein expression in granule cells was strongly attenuated. The down-regulation of rlim-1 mRNA occurred in granule cells just after the time of final division, coinciding with the onset of their migration. rlim-1 protein was detected in migratory granule neurons. The developmental decrease in rlim-1 mRNA and protein found in vivo was reproduced in pure cerebellar granule cell cultures. In these cultures, granule neurons were postmitotic 1 day after plating but still displayed high levels of rlim-1 protein expression up to 3 days in vitro. Our findings indicate that 1) rlim-1 is likely to act in concert with other genes to specify granule cell fate, 2) rlim-1 expression in granule neurons is regulated autonomously, and 3) rlim-1 protein may also play an important role in granule neuron differentiation and survival. Abstract
The Xenopus LIM homeodomain protein Xlim-1 is specifically expressed in the Spemann organizer region and assumed to play a role in the establishment of the body axis as a transcriptional activator. To further elucidate the mechanism underlying the regulation of its transcriptional activity, we focused on the region C-terminal to the homeodomain of Xlim-1 (CT239-403) and divided it into five regions, CCR1-5 (C-terminal conserved regions), based on similarity between Xlim-1 and its paralog, Xlim-5. The role of Xlim-1 CT239-403 in the Spemann organizer was analyzed by assaying the axis-forming ability of a series of CCR-mutated constructs in Xenopus embryos. We show that high doses of Xlim-1 constructs deleted of CCR1 or CCR2 initiate secondary axis formation in the absence of its coactivator Ldb1 (LIM-domain-binding protein 1), suggesting that CCR1 and CCR2 are involved in negative regulation of Xlim-1. In contrast, while Xlim-1 is capable of initiating secondary axis formation at low doses in the presence of Ldb1, deletion of CCR2 (aa 275-295) or substitution of five conserved tyrosines in CCR2 with alanines (CCR2-5YA) abolished the activity. In addition, UAS-GAL4 one-hybrid reporter assays in Xenopus showed that CCR2, but not CCR2-5YA, with its flanking regions (aa 261-315) functions as a transactivation domain when fused to the GAL4 DNA-binding domain. Finally, we show that none of the known transcriptional coactivators tested (CBP, SRC-1, and TIF2) interacts with the Xlim-1 transactivation domain (aa 261-315). Thus, Xlim-1 not only contains a unique tyrosine-rich activation domain but also contains a negative regulatory domain in CT239-403, suggesting a complex regulatory mechanism underlying the transcriptional activity of Xlim-1 in the organizer.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether Chinese traditional herbal drugs, Gorei-San (TJ-17) and Toki-Shakuyaku-San (TJ-23), affect airway smooth muscle tone and, if so, to determine what the mechanism of action is. Rabbit tracheal segments were isolated and the contractile responses to electrical field stimulation and acetylcholine were measured before and after the application of TJ-17 or TJ-23 under isometric conditions in vitro. Ouabain-sensitive rubidium-86 (86Rb) uptake by tissues in response to each drug was also measured. Each herbal medicine attenuated the contractile responses to electrical field stimulation and acetylcholine in a concentration-dependent manner, the maximal inhibition of acetylcholine-induced contraction being 37.5+/-4.9% for TJ-17 and 42.4+/-5.3% for TJ-23 (p<0.05 for each). These effects were not altered by mechanical removal of the epithelium, indomethacin, the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor NG -nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase inhibitor adenosine 3'5'-cyclic monophosphorothioate (Rp-cAMPS), the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase inhibitor KT5823, or the calcium (Ca2+)-activated potassium (K+) channel inhibitor charybdotoxin, but were greatly inhibited in the presence of the sodium (Na+)-K+ adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) inhibitor ouabain. Incubation of tissues with TJ-17 and TJ-23 dose dependently increased ouabain-sensitive 86Rb uptake. The results of the study suggest that both Gorei-San and Toki-Shakuyaku-San reduce airway smooth muscle tone via a postjunctional mechanism probably through stimulation of the sodium pump and the subsequent hyperpolarization/repolarization of the cell membrane. These effects may contribute to the antiasthmatic properties of these herbal medicines.

Abstract
Cytotoxicity of Ni ions were examined using C3H mouse derived 10T1/2 fibroblast cells. It became evident that Ni ions had dose-dependent cytotoxicity. The cell number incubated in DME medium containing 0.04 mM/L Ni ion for 6 days was reduced to half that in control DME medium without Ni. The cell totally disappeared in DME medium containing 2 mM/L Ni ion. The dissolution of Ni ions from Ni-containing metallic restorations must be lower than these concentration levels so that oral tissues might not be damaged. No neoplastic transformation was found on all cells examined.

Abstract
To elucidate the mechanism of dimensional changes in alginate impression in solutions, the relationship between the ion concentrations in three types of solutions (nonelectrolyte and monovalent and divalent metallic salts) and change in gel volume was examined. The gel in the monovalent metallic salt solution expanded and a decrease in monovalent cation and an increase in Ca2+ were observed. This suggests that the crosslinking density of the gel reduced due to dissociation of Ca2+ from the calcium alginate gel. In divalent metallic salt solutions, the shrinkage occurred according to crosslinking of unreacted residue. In the nonelectrolytic solution, gel, neither ethylene glycol nor acetonitrile showed any volume changes, while that in glutaraldehyde contracted. It is speculated that the former two solutions were affected by the fact that the gel has no semipermeability, and that the latter result was due to chemical interaction between the gel and solution.

Abstract
Insulators are located at the boundaries of differentially regulated genes and delimit their interactions by establishing independent chromatin structures. Recently, an insulator sequence has been found in the 5'-flanking region of arylsulfatase (ARS) gene from sea urchin. To investigate functional conservation of this ARS insulator in mice, we performed blastocyst assays to evaluate the effect of this insulator on the chromosomal position effect, quantitatively. We constructed transgenes that have a luciferase gene under the control of the CMV-IE enhancer and the human elongation factor 1 alpha promoter in the presence or absence of the ARS insulator in both flanking regions. These transgenes were microinjected into 1-cell mouse embryos and luciferase activity was measured at the blastocyst stage. We found that the presence of ARS insulator sequence doubled the number of luciferase-expressing blastocysts, and that the proportion of the blastocysts with high-level expression (> or = 1 x 10(4) relative light units (RLU)) was increased more than tenfold. In the case of transgenic fetuses, however, the presence of ARS insulator did not seem to improve transgene expression. These results suggest that the sea urchin ARS insulator confers position-independent expression driven by the human elongation factor 1 alpha promoter, at least in the blastocyst stage of the mouse.

Abstract
During Drosophila leg development, the distal-most compartment (pretarsus) and its immediate neighbour (tarsal segment 5) are specified by a pretarsus-specific homeobox gene, aristaless, and tarsal-segment-specific Bar homeobox genes, respectively; the pretarsus/tarsal-segment boundary is formed by antagonistic interactions between Bar and pretarsus-specific genes that include aristaless (Kojima, T., Sato, M. and Saigo, K. (2000) Development 127, 769–778). Here, we show that Drosophila Lim1, a homologue of vertebrate Lim1 encoding a LIM-homeodomain protein, is involved in pretarsus specification and boundary formation through its activation of aristaless. Ectopic expression of Lim1 caused aristaless misexpression, while aristaless expression was significantly reduced in Lim1-null mutant clones. Pretarsus Lim1 expression was negatively regulated by Bar and abolished in leg discs lacking aristaless activity, which was associated with strong Bar misexpression in the presumptive pretarsus. No Lim1 misexpression occurred upon aristaless misexpression. The concerted function of Lim1 and aristaless was required to maintain Fasciclin 2 expression in border cells and form a smooth pretarsus/tarsal-segment boundary. Lim1 was also required for femur, coxa and antennal development.

Abstract
The present investigation attempted to determine the exact prevalence of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection among inhabitants of Miyako Island (a remote island in the Okinawa Prefecture) and the molecular characteristics of the HDV genome that was isolated. Among the 4728 inhabitants, 375 (7.9%) were hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive. Antibody to HDV (anti-HDV) was present in 32 (8. 5%) of these 375 subjects, and liver function tests were normal in most subjects. The presence of HDV RNA was analysed by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Thirteen out of the 32 anti-HDV antibody-positive subjects were HDV RNA positive. Thus, 3.5% of HBsAg-positive subjects on Miyako Island were HDV RNA positive. Among the HDV RNA-positive subjects, liver function tests were within normal limits or were mildly abnormal. Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed that the HDV genomes on Miyako Island were similar to the Japanese and Taiwan isolates of HDV genotype II. Taiwan is geographically close to Miyako Island. Even though the races are different, a geographical factor was revealed to be significant with regard to HDV infection, which was spread in a closed environment.

Abstract
The Spemann organizer can be subdivided into head- and trunk-inducing tissues along the anteroposterior axis (Mangold, 1933. Naturwiisenschaften 43, 761-766; Spemann, 1931. Wilhelm Roux Arch. Entwicklungsmech. Org. 123, 389-517). Recent studies have suggested that head formation is brought about by repression of both Wnt and BMP signalling (Glinka et al., 1998. Nature 391, 357-362; Glinka et al., 1997. Nature 389, 517-519). Several Wnt inhibitors secreted from the head organizer region have been identified in Xenopus, such as Cerberus (Bouwmeester et al., 1996. Nature 382, 595-601), Frzb-1 (Leyns et al., 1997. Cell 88, 747-756; Lin et al., 1997. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 94, 11196-11200), and Dkk-1 (Glinka et al., 1998. Nature 391, 357-362), supporting this two-inhibitor model. To isolate genes expressed in the head organizer, we screened a prechordal plate cDNA library by sequencing and expression pattern, and isolated the Xenopus ortholog of chick crescent encoding a Frizzled-like domain that is related to Wnt-binding regions of the Frizzled-family proteins. Expression of Xenopus crescent was first detected in the Spemann organizer region at the early gastrula stage and later in prechordal plate cells lining the boundary of mesoderm and ectoderm layers and in the anterior endoderm. At tailbud stages, the expression in the endomesoderm region was diminished, while expression in the pronephros became detectable. In animal cap assays, crescent gene was synergistically upregulated by coexpression of Xlim1, Ldb1, and Siamois, but not by Activin treatment.

Abstract
The homeobox genes Xlim-1 and goosecoid (gsc) are coexpressed in the Spemann organizer and later in the prechordal plate that acts as head organizer. Based on our previous finding that gsc is a possible target gene for Xlim-1, we studied the regulation of gsc transcription by Xlim-1 and other regulatory genes expressed at gastrula stages, by using gsc-luciferase reporter constructs injected into animal explants. A 492-bp upstream region of the gsc promoter responds to Xlim-1/3m, an activated form of Xlim-1, and to a combination of wild-type Xlim-1 and Ldb1, a LIM domain binding protein, supporting the view that gsc is a direct target of Xlim-1. Footprint and electrophoretic mobility shift assays with GST-homeodomain fusion proteins and embryo extracts overexpressing FLAG-tagged full-length proteins showed that the Xlim-1 homeodomain or Xlim-1/Ldb1 complex recognize several TAATXY core elements in the 492-bp upstream region, where XY is TA, TG, CA, or GG. Some of these elements are also bound by the ventral factor PV.1, whereas a TAATCT element did not bind Xlim-1 or PV.1 but did bind the anterior factors Otx2 and Gsc. These proteins modulate the activity of the gsc reporter in animal caps: Otx2 activates the reporter synergistically with Xlim-1 plus Ldb1, whereas Gsc and PV.1 strongly repress reporter activity. We show further, using animal cap assays, that the endogenous gsc gene was synergistically activated by Xlim-1, Ldb1, and Otx2 and that the endogenous otx2 gene was activated by Xlim-1/3m, and this activation was suppressed by the posterior factor Xbra. Based on these data, we propose a model for gene interactions in the specification of dorsoventral and anteroposterior differences in the mesoderm during gastrulation.

Abstract
Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) interferes with gene expression in various species, a phenomenon known as RNA interference (RNAi). We show here that RNAi is also effective in modifying gene expression in Xenopus embryos. First, expression of an exogenous luciferase gene as a reporter in embryos was reduced by coinjection with dsRNA corresponding to the luciferase gene. Next, injection of dsRNA for Xlim-1, a homeobox gene suggested to be involved in Spemann organizer functions, reduced the endogenous level of Xlim-1 mRNA and produced embryos with reduced eyes or anterior truncation at high efficiency. In addition, injection of an antisense expression construct of Xlim-1 elicited phenotypes very similar to those of Xlim-1 dsRNA-injected embryos. These results indicate the effectiveness of RNAi for loss of function studies in Xenopus embryos, and the importance of Xlim-1 in head formation.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) stimulates the ciliary motility of the airway epithelium, thereby assisting in the regulation of mucociliary transport in the respiratory tract. In the present study, to elucidate a possible involvement of NO in mucociliary disturbance in diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB), we measured nasal clearance time (NCT) using the saccharin test, NO concentration in the exhaled air with a chemiluminescence analyzer, and electrolyte concentration in the sputum. Compared with healthy nonsmokers and smokers, patients with DPB showed a lower NO concentration in the exhaled air (p < 0.05), prolonged NCT (p < 0.01), and a higher Cl concentration in the sputum (p < 0.05). Among these variables, exhaled NO concentration was negatively correlated with NCT (p < 0.01) and sputum Cl concentration (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the inhibition of NO generation associated with an elevated Cl concentration in the airway surface liquid may contribute to airway mucociliary dysfunction in DPB.

Abstract
Members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily play various roles during development in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Two isoforms, TGF-beta2 and -beta5, have been isolated from Xenopus laevis. We describe here the localization of TGF-beta5 mRNA in early embryos of X. laevis, assessed by whole-mount in situ hybridization. The first detectable expression of TGF-beta5 was seen in the stage 14 embryo at the posterior tip of notochord, which continued to later stages, accompanied by the expression in bilateral regions of posterior wall in the tail region next to the notochord. At later stages, transient expression was seen in the cement gland (around stage 21) and in the somites (stages 24-27). In addition, expression was present in the branchial arches (stage 29-36) and olfactory placodes (stage 36).

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to examine the cytotoxic effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer on 4 mammalian fibroblasts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four cells--C3H10T1/2, L929, Balb/3T3 clone A31, and MC3T3-E1--were incubated for 6 days in 24-well microplates filled with 1 mL of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle medium containing MMA monomer that ranged from 0 to 200 mM/L. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by direct cell number count. RESULTS L929 possessed the largest TC50 value (the amount of MMA that caused 50% cell death) (34 mM/L), and Balb/3T3 clone A31 had the least value (1 mM/L); C3H10T1/2 and MC3T3-E1 had intermediate values (25 mM/L and 16 mM/L, respectively). CONCLUSION This study showed that the MMA monomer had dose-dependent cytotoxicity, which varied among the cells tested.

Abstract
The surveillance study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity of fluoroquinolones (ofloxacin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, tosufloxacin) and other 20 antimicrobial agents against 5,180 clinical isolates obtained from 26 medical institutions during 1998 in Japan. The resistance to fluoroquinolones was remarkable in Enterococci, methicillin-resistant staphylococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa from UTI. However, many of the common pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae including penicillin-resistant isolates, methicillin-susceptible Stahylococcus aureus, Moraxella catarrhalis, the family of Enterobacteriaceae, Haemophilus influenzae including ampicillin-resistant isolates have been kept to be susceptible to fluoroquinolones. About 90% of P. aeruginosa isolates from RTI were susceptible to fluoroquinolones. In conclusion, the results from this surveillance study suggest that fluoroquinolones are useful in the treatment of various bacterial infections including respiratory infections.

Abstract
In order to elucidate the neural mechanisms involved in the perception of the three-dimensional (3D) orientation of a surface, we trained monkeys to discriminate the 3D orientation of a surface from binocular disparity cues using a Go/No-go type delayed-matching-to-sample (DMTS) task and examined the properties of the surface-orientation-selective (SOS) neurons. We recorded 57 SOS neurons from the caudal part of the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (area CIP) of three hemispheres of two Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). We tested 29 of 57 SOS neurons using the square plate of a solid figure stereogram (SFS) and random-dot stereogram (RDS) without perspective cues; almost all of the tested neurons (28/29) showed surface orientation selectivity for the SFS and/or the RDS without perspective cues. Eight of these 28 neurons (28.6%) showed selectivity for both the RDS and SFS, 7 (25.0%) were dominantly selective for the RDS, and 13 (46.4%) were dominantly selective for the SFS. These results suggest that neurons that show surface orientation tuning for the RDS without perspective cues compute surface orientation from the gradient of the binocular disparity given by the random-dot across the surface. On the other hand, neurons that show surface orientation tuning for the SFS without perspective cues may represent surface orientation primarily from the gradient of the binocular disparity along the contours. In conclusion, the SOS neurons in the area CIP are likely to operate higher order processing of disparity signals for surface perception by integrating the input signals from many disparity-sensitive neurons with different disparity tuning.

Abstract
Nocturnal hypoglycemia is one of the serious complications of intensive insulin therapy in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM; type 1 DM). We assessed the effect of voglibose (alpha-glucosidase inhibitor) administration before the evening meal on nocturnal hypoglycemia in IDDM patients with intensive insulin therapy. Ten IDDM patients received 0.3 mg voglibose just before the evening meal for 5 days. The diet and insulin regimen were not changed throughout the study. Nocturnal plasma glucose levels (10 PM, 3 AM, and 7 AM) were studied in these patients before and during voglibose administration. Blood glucose levels were measured at 3 AM before and during voglibose treatment. The mean plasma glucose level at 3 AM was 3.4+/-0.4 mmol/L before voglibose treatment and 7.3+/-1.0 mmol/L during treatment. Plasma glucose at 3 AM was elevated in 9 of 10 patients with voglibose. The decrease in plasma glucose from 10 PM to 3 AM was 6.5+/-0.8 mmol/L before voglibose administration but 3.2+/-0.9 mmol/L during treatment (P < .01). The hypoglycemia rate was 52% (17 of 33 nights) before voglibose administration but only 9.1% (3 of 33 nights) during treatment. We conclude that voglibose administration before the evening meal improves nocturnal hypoglycemia in IDDM patients with intensive insulin therapy.

Abstract
Six commercial phosphate-bonded silica investments were mixed with four different mixing methods such as hand, two conventional blade-driven vacuum mixers and a new planetary mixing device, and examined for their setting expansion and compressive strength. The two properties often altered, depending upon the mixing method and the investment. The setting expansion of three investments were significantly affected by the mixing method while those of the other three were not. Compressive strength of all six investments varied by changing the mixing method. It is emphasized here that a mixing method and mixing condition must be properly set for each investment to improve the fit of the final metallic castings. This study also suggests that the planetary mixing device is a useful substitute for conventional blade-driven vacuum mixers.

Abstract
Current diagnostic criteria for reflux disease and Barrett's esophagus are based on the belief that the gastroesophageal junction normally contains 2 cm of cardiac mucosa composed of mucous glands devoid of parietal cells. This autopsy study disproves this belief. Even when the entire circumference of the gastroesophageal junction is examined, pure cardiac mucosa was completely absent in 56% of patients. All patients had oxyntocardiac mucosa, in which glands contained a mixture of mucous and parietal cells. Cardiac and oxyntocardiac mucosae were present only in part of the circumference of the junction in 50% of patients. The measured maximum length of cardiac plus oxyntocardiac mucosa was less than 0.5 cm in 76% of patients. There was a tendency for the presence and extent of cardiac mucosa to increase with age. Cardiac mucosa at the junction is therefore frequently absent, has considerable individual variation, is very small in extent when present, is commonly absent from some part of the circumference of the junction, and increases in prevalence and length with age. These characteristics of cardiac mucosa make it highly unlikely that it is a normal structure. We develop the hypothesis that cardiac mucosa represents an early histologic manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux.

Abstract
A 47-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for community-acquired pneumonia complicated with acute renal failure. Legionella pneumophila serogroup type 1 was grown in BCYE (buffered charcoal yeast extract) agar for sputum culture. Although his respiratory illness responded to intravenous erythromycin therapy, renal failure worsened and necessitated hemodialysis. Renal biopsy showed profound tubulointerstitial nephritis. After initiation of steroid therapy his renal function improved and he was discharged thereafter. These findings suggest that in Legionnaires' disease with acute renal failure, tubulointerstitial nephritis should also be considered and steroid therapy may be an effective modality for the renal complication.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and fluorapatite (FAp) were synthesized in the presence of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, galactose and sucrose). X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystallinity of two FAp groups that were synthesized in the presence of glucose or sucrose decreased with the increase in carbohydrate content. In SEM photographs we found that the size of their crystals was small and the shape changed. However, FAp groups that were snythesized in the presence of fructose or galactose showed little change in their crystallinity and shape. Four carbohydrates had some influence on size, but not on shape or crystallinity when synthesizing HAp. These results suggest that glucose and/or sucrose has a chemical affinity to FAp and inhibits the growth of FAp crystals.

Abstract
Inhalation of adenosine causes bronchoconstriction in asthmatic subjects, but the effect of this purine nucleotide on airway vascular permeability is unknown. In order to determine whether adenosine produces airway microvascular leakage and, if so, to examine the effect of cromolyn (sodium cromoglycate (SCG)) on this extravasation of Evans blue was measured in the airways of ovalbumin-sensitized Brown Norway rats. Inhaled adenosine caused microvascular leakage in sensitized but not in non-sensitized rats, and the response was abolished by capsaicin pretreatment or the tachykinin neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist FK888. Adenosine-induced vascular leakage became apparent in nonsensitized rats when treated with phosphoramidon, and airway neutral endopeptidase activity was lower in sensitized than in non-sensitized animals. The extravasation induced by adenosine in sensitized rats was dose dependently inhibited by SCG aerosols, SCG likewise inhibited microvascular responses to substance P, but had no effect on those to platelet-activating factor. These results suggest that: 1) adenosine induces airway microvascular leakage in sensitized rats through stimulation of neurokinin-1 receptors; 2) this effect is associated with a sensitization-induced decrease in neutral endopeptidase activity; and 3) sodium cromoglycate inhibits adenosine-induced extravasation, presumably via functional antagonism of tachykinins.

Abstract
In the first part of this article, we review our neurophysiological studies of the hand-manipulation-related neurons in the anterior part of the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (area AIP). We describe the properties of visually responsive neurons in area AIP. Object-type visual-dominant neurons responded to the sight of objects and showed selectivity not only for simple geometrical shapes, but also for complex objects such as a knob-in-groove and a plate-in-groove. Some of the object-type visual-dominant neurons showed selectivity for the orientation of the longitudinal axis or the plane (surface) of a plate or a ring. In the second part of this article, we review our study of binocular visual neurons in the caudal part of the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (c-IPS area), in particular, of axis-orientation-selective (AOS) neurons and surface-orientation-selective (SOS) neurons. AOS neurons preferred long and thin stimuli, were sensitive to binocular disparity, and tuned to the axis orientation in three-dimensional (3D) space. SOS neurons preferred broad and flat stimuli and were tuned to the surface orientation in depth. Some SOS neurons responded to a square in a random dot stereogram (RDS) with orientation tuning, suggesting that they encode surface orientation from a disparity gradient. Others responded to solid figure stereograms with orientation disparity and/or width disparity. It was concluded that the c-IPS area is a higher center for stereopsis, which integrates various binocular disparity signals received from the V3 complex and other prestriate areas to represent the neural code for 3D features. It may send projections to the AIP area and contribute to visual adjustment of the shape of the handgrip and/or hand orientation for manipulation and grasping. Neurons of the AIP area may also receive monocular cues of depth from the ventral visual pathway to discriminate the 3D shape of the object of manipulation.

Abstract
The mammalian hippocampus contains the neural circuitry that is crucial for cognitive functions such as learning and memory. The development of such circuitry is dependent on the generation and correct placement of the appropriate number and types of neurons. Mice lacking function of the LIM homeobox gene Lhx5 showed a defect in hippocampus development. Hippocampal neural precursor cells were specified and proliferated, but many of them failed to either exit the cell cycle or to differentiate and migrate properly. Lhx5 is therefore essential for the regulation of precursor cell proliferation and the control of neuronal differentiation and migration during hippocampal development.

Abstract
This study was conducted to elucidate sickness absence due to mental disorders in Japanese companies. Data on sickness absence taken for seven consecutive days or more at eight companies (total number of employees: 44,816) was used for the analysis. Diagnosis of mental disorders was based on medical certificates prepared by physicians. The frequency of absence due to all diseases and mental disorders was 3.0% and 0.3%, respectively. The proportion of frequency absence due to mental disorders compared to that for all diseases was 9.4%. Figures for absence prevalence were almost the same as those for frequency absence. The average length of absence due to mental disorders and non-mental disorders was 119.5 days and 47.3 days, respectively. Rate of absence days due to mental disorders compared to that for all diseases was 21.0%. Percent of sickness absenteeism was 0.4%. In one company, the proportion of frequency absence and rate of absence days due to mental disorders compared to those for all diseases had an increasing tendency over the last six years.

Abstract
Two commercial visible-light (VL)-cured composite resins were examined for their optical properties by diffuse reflectance measurements in VL spectrum and Kubelka-Munk's theory. Cured Silux Plus displayed diffuse reflectance similar to that of cured Z100, although uncured Silux Plus showed diffuse reflectance less than that of uncured Z100. By Kubelka-Munk's analyses, two optical constants of the composites at eight wavelengths such as absorption and scattering coefficients were calculated using the difference in diffuse reflectance of the composites backed between white and black standards. Upon curing, the two optical constants of the composites significantly altered especially in the shorter wavelengths. By lowering the wavelength, two optical constants of the composites tended to increase, giving rise to less light reflection and transmission. The theoretical optical transmittance of the composites was expressed in terms of hyperbolic functions of thickness of the composites at eight wavelengths in VL, dependent upon the two optical constants. The actual optical transmittance of 1 mm composites were fairly comparative with the theoretical values at 1 mm. The depth of cure of the two composites matched well with the thickness of the uncured composites which yielded the minimum theoretical optical transmittance in the wavelength region of 400-500 nm.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study developed a new device for measuring the internal setting expansion of phosphate-bonded investment and assessed the effect that different pattern materials may have on the internal setting expansion. MATERIAL AND METHODS The measuring device consisted of 2 horizontal plungers, a vertical needle, 2 digital dial gauges, and a protection tube with a disk. Outward displacement of the 2 horizontal plungers by investment setting expansion was transmitted to a digital dial gauge through the vertical needle. Upward displacement of a protection tube was measured by another digital dial gauge. Three pattern materials, including soft and hard inlay waxes and an autopolymerizing resin, were used. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Scheffe's F test for all post hoc pairwise comparisons (95% confidence level). RESULTS For all pattern materials, vertical setting expansion (range of means, 2.26% to 2.73%) was significantly higher than the horizontal setting expansion (range of means, 0.09% to 1.50%) (P <.05). In addition, for the hard inlay wax pattern, the horizontal setting expansion for the cervical aspect (means, 1.39%) was significantly higher than that of the occlusal aspect (means, 0.54%) (P <.05). CONCLUSION In this study, the new measuring device was a convenient and reliable method for quantitative assessment of internal setting expansion. Regardless of the type of pattern material, a phosphate-bonded investment caused nonuniform setting expansion, especially in a horizontal direction, which lead to the distortion of the pattern.

Abstract
The aims of this study were twofold: (1) to determine the prevalence and clinical features of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection among subjects positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) living in the Miyako Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, and (2) to clarify the relationship between HDV-RNA level and severity of HDV-related liver disease. One hundred and ninety-nine HBsAg-positive subjects (123 asymptomatic carriers [ASCs], 3 patients with acute hepatitis [AH], 50 patients with chronic hepatitis [CH], 15 patients with liver cirrhosis [LC], and 8 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC], were tested for antibody to HDV (anti-HDV) by radioimmunoassay. Anti-HDV-positive individuals were examined to determine semi-quantified HDV-RNA level by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The overall prevalence of anti-HDV among the 199 subjects was 21.1%. The positivity rate tended to increase with age or the severity of the underlying liver disease: anti-HDV-positive rates were 10.6% (13/123) in ASCs, 32.0% (16/50) in patients with CH, 40.0% (6/15) in patients with LC, and 87.5% (7/8) in patients with HCC. None of the patients with AH were positive for anti-HDV. There was no correlation between semi-quantified serum HDV-RNA levels and the severity of chronic liver disease in patients positive for anti-HDV. The present study showed the local spread of HDV infection in the Miyako Islands, Okinawa, Japan. Although the anti-HDV positivity rate tended to increase with the severity of the underlying liver disease, the severity of HDV-related liver disease did not correlate with the semi-quantified serum HDV-RNA level.

Abstract
Diabetic muscle infarction (DMI) is a rare complication of diabetes mellitus. We report the first recorded case in Japan. A 45-year-old Japanese woman presented with severe pain in the left antero-medial thigh. She had a 14-year history of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). She had first noticed pain in her left thigh after a walk 2 weeks prior to presentation. The pain worsened progressively. She noticed a firm mass in her left thigh. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a high-intensity signal in the muscle bulk of the anterior component of the left thigh. A needle biopsy of the mass showed necrosis. She was treated with bedrest and an antiplatelet agent. The mass disappeared 8 weeks after admission. DMI is a rare complication of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Twenty-seven cases with DMI have been reported in the English literature but we believe this is the first Japanese case with DMI.

Abstract
A 71-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of severe hypertriglyceridemia. The patient had a 26-year history of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia (T-chol 300 mg/dl, TG 300 mg/dl). She was treated with sulfonylurea and clofibrate. Seven years before admission, she had undergone a radical mastectomy for cancer of the left breast. After the operation, she had received tamoxifen and fluorouracil. One month before admission, she had marked hypertriglyceridemia (triglyceride 2,106 mg/dl). After discontinuation of tamoxifen and fluorouracil, her serum triglyceride level decreased to 372 mg/dl; when tamoxifen was given again, it increased to 581 mg/dl, and her hepatic triglyceride lipase activity decreased from 0.228 to 0.164 mumol FFA/ml/min. Apolipoprotein E phenotype was wild type E3/3. The concentration of sex-hormone-binding globulin increased from 110 to 130 nmol/l. These changes associated with tamoxifen treatment were similar to those seen after administration of estrogen. Tamoxifen, an anti-estrogen, has been used as adjuvant therapy in cases of estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer. Tamoxifen has some weak estrogenic activity. The tamoxifen-induced hypertriglyceridemia seen in this case was an effect of its estrogenic action.

Abstract
Class II non-muscle myosins are implicated in diverse biological processes such as cytokinesis, cellularization, cell shape changes and gastrulation. Two distinct non-muscle myosin heavy chain genes have been reported in all vertebrates: non-muscle myosin heavy chain-A (NMHC-A) and -B (NMHC-B). We report here the isolation of the Xenopus homolog of NMHC-A and present a comparative analysis of the developmental and spatial expression patterns of NMHC-A and the previously isolated NMHC-B to address the role of NMHCs in Xenopus development. A 7.5 kb NMHC-A mRNA is present, maternally in unfertilized eggs and throughout embryogenesis, as well as in all adult tissues examined. An additional 8.3 kb zygotic transcript for NMHC-A is also detected, but only during embryonic stages. Whole mount in situ hybridization with tailbud stage embryos shows that NMHC-A mRNA is predominantly expressed in the epidermis, whereas NMHC-B mRNA is expressed in the somites, brain, eyes and branchial arches. Interestingly, the expression of NMHC-B in developing somites is gradually restricted to the center of each somite as differentiation proceeds. DAPI nuclear staining demonstrated that NMHC-B mRNA is colocalized with the nuclei or perinuclear area. In animal cap experiments, treatment with activin A or ectopic expression of Xbra and an activated form of Xlim1 markedly up-regulates NMHC-B as well as muscle actin mRNAs and slightly down-regulates NMHC-A mRNA, consistent with NMHC-B expression in the somitic muscle and NMHC-A expression in the epidermis.

Abstract
The mechanism of bonding between metal and ceramic in systems using the functionally graded method with pure gold and gold mixture as a primer was examined. Four types of samples, porcelain, porcelain-gold, porcelain-metal and porcelain-gold-metal were prepared. The gold intermediate layer was fired at 1000 degrees C. For porcelain and metal, low-fusing opaque, body porcelain and palladium alloy were used. The intermediate layer was composed of three layers; pure gold, gold-palladium and gold-porcelain layer. During the bending test of each sample, the porcelain peeled away from the porcelain-metal system, while porcelain with the gold intermediate layer remained on the metal surface even after maximal loading. The bond strength of the porcelain-gold-metal system was much higher than that of the porcelain-metal system, and the toughness of the former was much greater than that of the latter. Laser microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed a smooth interface between the intermediate layer and the metal which suggested proper chemical bonding, and no gap was observed. At the interface between the porcelain and the gold intermediate alloy, a good mechanical anchor lock was observed. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) showed a clear distribution of each element (e.g. Si, Au and Pd) in the porcelain, gold intermediate layer and metal frame.

Abstract
In our previous studies of hand manipulation task-related neurons, we found many neurons of the parietal association cortex which responded to the sight of three-dimensional (3D) objects. Most of the task-related neurons in the AIP area (the lateral bank of the anterior intraparietal sulcus) were visually responsive and half of them responded to objects for manipulation. Most of these neurons were selective for the 3D features of the objects. More recently, we have found binocular visual neurons in the lateral bank of the caudal intraparietal sulcus (c-IPS area) that preferentially respond to a luminous bar or place at a particular orientation in space. We studied the responses of axis-orientation selective (AOS) neurons and surface-orientation selective (SOS) neurons in this area with stimuli presented on a 3D computer graphics display. The AOS neurons showed a stronger response to elongated stimuli and showed tuning to the orientation of the longitudinal axis. Many of them preferred a tilted stimulus in depth and appeared to be sensitive to orientation disparity and/or width disparity. The SOS neurons showed a stronger response to a flat than to an elongated stimulus and showed tuning to the 3D orientation of the surface. Their responses increased with the width or length of the stimulus. A considerable number of SOS neurons responded to a square in a random dot stereogram and were tuned to orientation in depth, suggesting their sensitivity to the gradient of disparity. We also found several SOS neurons that responded to a square with tilted or slanted contours, suggesting their sensitivity to orientation disparity and/or width disparity. Area c-IPS is likely to send visual signals of the 3D features of an object to area AIP for the visual guidance of hand actions.

Abstract
About 50 cases of insulin receptor abnormality were reported after in 1985 when human insulin receptor cDNA was cloned. The abnormalities were found in syndrome of type A insulin resistance, Leprechaunism, and syndrome of Rabson-Mendenhall. We have reported 3 families with insulin receptor gene abnormality, Type C (Chiba), Type A (Yamanashi) and Type C (Hokkaidou-2). Type C (Chiba) and Type A (Yamanashi) have a deletion of from 17 to 22 exon and 14 exon of insulin receptor gene, respectively. Type C(Hokkaidou-2) shows a substitution of valine for glycine at codon 1008 in the tyrosine kinase domain. They all showed the typical symptoms of type A insulin resistance, and the insulin resistance was dominantly inherited in the family of Type C(Chiba) and Type C(Hokkaidou-2), and not in the family of Type A(Yamanashi).

cDNAs encoding two PDE-3 or cyclic GMP-inhibited (cGI) cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) isoforms, RPDE-3B (RcGIP1) and HPDE-3A (HcGIP2), were cloned from rat (R) adipose tissue and human (H) heart cDNA libraries. Deletion and N- and C-terminal truncation mutants were expressed in Escherichia coli in order to define their catalytic core. Active mutants of both RPDE-3B and HPDE-3A included the domain conserved among all PDEs plus additional upstream and downstream sequences. An RPDE-3B mutant consisting of the conserved domain alone and one from which the RPDE-3B 44-amino acid insertion was deleted exhibited little or no activity. All active recombinants exhibited a high affinity (< 1 microM) for cyclic AMP (cAMP) and cyclic GMP (cGMP), were inhibited by cAMP, cGMP, and cilostamide, but not by rolipram, and were photolabeled with [32P]-cGMP. The IC50 values for cGMP inhibition of cAMP hydrolysis were lower for HPDE-3A than for RPDE-3B recombinants. The deduced amino acid sequences of HPDE-3A and RPDE-3B catalytic domains are very similar except for the 44-amino acid insertion not found in other PDEs. It is possible that this insertion may not only distinguish PDE-3 catalytic domains from other PDEs and identify catalytic domains of PDE-3 subfamilies or conserved members of the PDE-3 gene family, but may also be involved in the regulation of sensitivity of PDE-3s to cGMP.

Abstract
Two types of heterogeneous fluoridated apatite, H-F-H and F-H-F, were synthesized by supplying fluoride during the middle half (H-F-H) or initial and final quarters (F-H-F) of the experimental period. Although X-ray diffraction patterns and SEM photographs of both H-F-H and F-H-F-type apatites were not significantly different, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed quite different features; H-F-H-type apatite crystals were elongated hexagons, while those of F-H-F-type apatite were rather wider hexagons with electron damage in three-quarters of the inner core. These results supported the previous speculations on the two different types of heterogeneous fluoridated hydroxyapatites synthesized with fluoride concentrations stoichiometrically equivalent to that of fluorapatite: hydroxyapatite covered with fluorapatite and fluorapatite covered with hydroxyapatite. F-H-F-type apatite was less soluble than that of H-F-H-type apatite.

Abstract
The expression of MUC-1 mucin (membrane-associated mucin) and MUC-2 mucin (secretory mucin) were immunohistochemically examined in 46 invasive ductal carcinomas (IDC) and 16 intraductal papillary mucinous tumors (IPMT) of the pancreas. Intraductal papillary mucinous tumors usually reveal expansive growth. However, of the 16 IPMT examined in the present study, three showed an invasive growth pattern, which was similar to 'mucinous carcinoma', around the non-invasive growth areas. Of 46 IDC, MUC-1 mucin detected by monoclonal antibodies, DF3 and MY.1E12, was expressed in 44 cases (96%) and in 45 cases (98%), respectively, whereas MUC-2 mucin detected by polyclonal antibody, anti-MRP, was not expressed in any of the cases (0%). In contrast, in the non-invasive growth areas of the 16 IPMT, MUC-1 mucin detected by DF3 and MY.1E12 was expressed in four cases (25%) and in six cases (38%), respectively, whereas MUC-2 mucin detected by anti-MRP was expressed in 13 cases (81%). The invasive growth areas of the three IPMT showed positive expression of MUC-1 mucins detected by DF3 and MY.1E12, although the non-invasive growth areas showed negative expression of MUC-1 mucins, except for their focal positive expression in one of the three cases. These findings indicate that the invasive growth areas of IPMT acquire a characteristic of MUC-1 mucin expression that is usually seen in IDC.

Although X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs of both H-F and F-H type apatites were not significantly different, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) showed quite different features; H-F type apatites were elongated hexagons with electron beam damage in the core, while F-H type apatites were rather wider hexagons and approached the typical hexagon of fluorapatite. These results supported the previous speculations on the two different types of heterogeneous fluoridated hydroxyapatites synthesized with fluoride concentration stoichiometrically equivalent to that of fluorapatite: hydroxyapatite covered with fluorapatite and fluorapatite covered with hydroxyapatite. The apparent solubility of H-F type apatites decreased with increases in degree of fluoridation, while that of F-H type apatites decreased markedly and then remained almost constant.
