Abstract
This article aims to reveal the optimal peptide segment with antioxidant activity from Dalian Stichopus japonicus, investigate its anti-melanogenesis effect, and elucidate its mechanisms of action both in vitro and in vivo. The best antioxidant alcalase hydrolysates, identified by the previous screening of proteases, was isolated by ultrafiltration; it was found that the components with a molecular weight of ≤ 3 kDa exhibited the best activity. The chemical components were characterized using LC-MS/MS. Through molecular docking, GPIGF was identified as the peptide segment with the best antioxidant and melanogenesis-inhibitory activity. A search in the NCBI database revealed that GPIGF is a newly obtained natural oligopeptide. Further experiments with synthesized GPIGF in vitro showed that it effectively reduces cell apoptosis and damage, and inhibits the expression of melanin-related genes, including tyrosinase (TYR), and associated proteins TRP-1, TRP-2, and MITF. In vivo experiments with the zebrafish model demonstrated that GPIGF significantly inhibits AAPH-induced apoptosis in zebrafish larvae, reduces the production of ROS, and suppresses melanin generation on the skin surface without exhibiting embryotoxicity. This study provides a research foundation for the development of antioxidants from Dalian Stichopus japonicus, which could serve as natural whitening and anti-aging agents, supporting its integrated utilization and development.

Abstract
Functional compounds (FCs) had some functions, which are affected easily by digestion and transmembrane transport leading to low absorption rates, such as lutein, quercetin, xylo-oligosaccharide. Protein from blue foods is a potential bioactive compound, which had higher bioavailability, especially for bioactive peptides (BBPs). The BBPs has great limitations, especially the variability under pepsin digestion. However, the limitation of single FCs and BBPs in bioavailability might can be complemented by mixture of different bioactive compounds. Therefore, this review provides an in-depth study on the function and mechanism of different FCs/BBPs and their mixtures. Specifically, digestion effect of mixtures on function and transmembrane transport mechanisms of different bioactive compounds were exhibited to elaborate interactions between BBPs and FCs in delivery systems (function and bioavailability). Combination of FCs/BBPs could enhance bioactive compounds function by mutual complement of function mechanisms, as well as improving the function after digestion by regulating digestion process. Moreover, transmembrane absorption and transport of FCs/BBPs also could be facilitated by mixtures due to complement of transmembrane mechanism (endocytosis, protein channels, cell bypass way). This manuscript lays a foundation for the development of active ingredient bioavailability in functional food processing.

Abstract
This study investigated the physicochemical properties, functionalities, and antioxidant capacities of protein extracts from wild sea cucumber Australostichopus mollis collected from four distinct locations in New Zealand. Protein was extracted from sea cucumber body walls using trypsin enzymatic extraction, followed by cold acetone precipitation. The amino acid analysis revealed high glycine (189.08 mg/g), glutamic acid (119.45 mg/g), and aspartic acid (91.91 mg/g) concentrations in all samples. The essential amino acid indexes of the protein extracts (62.96, average) were higher than the WHO/FAO standard references, indicating the excellent protein quality of A. mollis. Furthermore, protein extracts from A. mollis demonstrated superior emulsifying activity (202.3-349.5 m2/g average) compared to commercial soy and whey protein isolates under all tested pH conditions, and enhanced foaming capacity (109.9-126.4%) and stability (52.7-72%) in neutral and acidic conditions. The extracts also exhibited good solubility, exceeding 70% across pH 3-11. Antioxidant capacities (ABTS and DPPH free radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power) were identified in A. mollis protein extracts for the first time, with clear variations observed among different locations. These findings elucidate the advantageous functional properties of protein extracts from wild New Zealand A. mollis and highlight their potential application as high-quality antioxidant food ingredients.

Abstract
The skin of fish is a physicochemical barrier that is characterized by being formed by cells that secrete molecules responsible for the first defense against pathogenic organisms. In this study, the biological activity of peptides from mucus of Seriola lalandi and Seriolella violacea were identified and characterized. To this purpose, peptide extraction was carried out from epidermal mucus samples of juveniles of both species, using chromatographic strategies for purification. Then, the peptide extracts were characterized to obtain the amino acid sequence by mass spectrometry. Using bioinformatics tools for predicting antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, 12 peptides were selected that were chemically produced by simultaneous synthesis using the Fmoc-Tbu strategy. The results revealed that the synthetic peptides presented a random coil or extended secondary structure. The analysis of antimicrobial activity allowed it to be discriminated that four peptides, named by their synthesis code 5065, 5069, 5070, and 5076, had the ability to inhibit the growth of Vibrio anguillarum and affected the copepodite stage of C. rogercresseyi. On the other hand, peptides 5066, 5067, 5070, and 5077 had the highest antioxidant capacity. Finally, peptides 5067, 5069, 5070, and 5076 were the most effective for inducing respiratory burst in fish leukocytes. The analysis of association between composition and biological function revealed that the antimicrobial activity depended on the presence of basic and aromatic amino acids, while the presence of cysteine residues increased the antioxidant activity of the peptides. Additionally, it was observed that those peptides that presented the highest antimicrobial capacity were those that also stimulated respiratory burst in leukocytes. This is the first work that demonstrates the presence of functional peptides in the epidermal mucus of Chilean marine fish, which provide different biological properties when the fish face opportunistic pathogens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is the terminal manifestation of a type of pulmonary disease, which seriously affects the respiratory function of the body, and with no effective cure for treatment. This study evaluated the effect of sea cucumber peptides (SCP) on bleomycin-induced SD rat PF. RESULTS SCP can inhibit the PF induced by bleomycin. PF and SCP did not affect the food intake of rats, but PF reduced the body weight of rats, and SCP could improve the weight loss. SCP reduced lung index in PF rats in a dose-dependent manner. SCP significantly reduced IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, α-SMA and VIM expression levels in lung tissue (P < 0.05), significantly decreased TGF-β1 expression level in serum (P < 0.01) and the LSCP group and MSCP group had better inhibitory effects on PF than the HSCP group. Histomorphological results showed that SCP could ameliorate the structural damage of lung tissue, alveolar wall rupture, inflammatory cell infiltration, fibroblast proliferation and deposition of intercellular matrix and collagen fibers caused by PF. The improvement effect of the MSCP group was the most noteworthy in histomorphology. Metabolomics results showed that SCP significantly downregulated catechol, N-acetyl-l-histidine, acetylcarnitine, stearoylcarnitine, d-mannose, l-threonine, l-alanine, glycine, 3-guanidinopropionic acid, prostaglandin D2 and embelic acid d-(-)-β-hydroxybutyric acid expression levels in lung tissue. CONCLUSION SCP ameliorate bleomycin-induced SD rat PF. KEGG pathway analysis proved that SCP intervened in PF mainly via the lysosome pathway, with d-mannose as the key factor. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Apostichopus japonicus, also known as Stichopus japonicus, with medicinal and food homologous figures, is a globally recognized precious ingredient with extremely high nutritional value. There is no relevant review available through literature search, so this article selects the research articles through the keywords "sea cucumber" and "Apostichopus japonicus (Stichopus japonicus)" in six professional databases, such as Wiley, PubMed, ScienceDirect, ACS, Springer, and Web of Science, from 2000 to the present, summarizing the extraction, isolation, and purification methods for the four major categories (polysaccharides, proteins and peptides, saponins, and other components) of the A. japonicus chemical substances and 10 effective biological activities of A. japonicus. Included are anticoagulation, anticancer/antitumor activities, hematopoiesis, regulation of gut microbiota, and immune regulatory activities that correspond to traditional efficacy. Literature support is provided for the development of medicines and functional foods and related aspects that play a leading role in future directions.

Abstract
Sea cucumbers have high economic value, and in most forms of trade, their body wall is typically the only part that is harvested and sold. The organs of the sea cucumber, collectively known as the viscera, are frequently discarded, contributing to land and water pollution. However, discarded sea cucumber viscera contain various nutrients that can be used in many applications. Therefore, this review highlights the biological and economic aspects of sea cucumbers, followed by a critical discussion of the nutritional value of their internal organs and possible applications, including as functional feed additives in the aquaculture industry, sources of natural testosterone for application in sex reversal and production of monosex population, of neuroprotective agents against central nervous system disorders and of cosmetic ingredients, especially for skin whitening and anti-ageing products. The review further highlights the valorisation potential of viscera to maximize their economic potential, thus providing an enormous prospect for reusing sea cucumber waste, thereby reducing the negative impact of the sea cucumber fishery sector on the environment.

Abstract
Skin lesions caused by ultraviolet radiation exposure seriously reduce people's life quality, safe natural products development to prevent and repair ultraviolet damage is an effective strategy. We investigated the protective and reparative effects of the natural composite gel (SE-gel) derived from fish scales on UV-irradiated skin by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) -mediated oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. Our results showed that SE-gel rich in glycine and proline had good ultraviolet absorption, water absorption, moisturizing and free radical scavenging abilities. In vitro, SE-gel could improve UV-irradiated L929 cell viability by 1.24 times via inhibiting 50% ROS production and malondialdehyde, and improving superoxide dismutase activity to reduce oxidative stress caused by UV irradiation. In UV-irradiated mouse skin damage model, SE-gel prevent UV-induced skin erythema, epidermal thickening, collagen fiber degradation and disruption, and reduced UV-induced inflammatory response via NF-κB signaling pathway, showing potential application in UV-irradiated skin damage prevention and repair.

Abstract
Oceans are regarded as a plentiful and sustainable source of biological compounds. Enzymes are a group of marine biomaterials that have recently drawn more attention because they are produced in harsh environmental conditions such as high salinity, extensive pH, a wide temperature range, and high pressure. Hence, marine-derived enzymes are capable of exhibiting remarkable properties due to their unique composition. In this review, we overviewed and discussed characteristics of marine enzymes as well as the sources of marine enzymes, ranging from primitive organisms to vertebrates, and presented the importance, advantages, and challenges of using marine enzymes with a summary of their applications in a variety of industries. Current biotechnological advancements need the study of novel marine enzymes that could be applied in a variety of ways. Resources of marine enzyme can benefit greatly for biotechnological applications duo to their biocompatible, ecofriendly and high effectiveness. It is beneficial to use the unique characteristics offered by marine enzymes to either develop new processes and products or improve existing ones. As a result, marine-derived enzymes have promising potential and are an excellent candidate for a variety of biotechnology applications and a future rise in the use of marine enzymes is to be anticipated.

Abstract
Arthrospira maxima has been identified as a sustainable source of rich proteins with diverse functionalities and bioactivities. After extracting C-phycocyanin (C-PC) and lipids in a biorefinery process, the spent biomass still contains a large proportion of proteins with potential for biopeptide production. In this study, the residue was digested using Papain, Alcalase, Trypsin, Protamex 1.6, and Alcalase 2.4 L at different time intervals. The resulting hydrolyzed product with the highest antioxidative activity, evaluated through their scavenging capability of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anion, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), was selected for further fractionation and purification to isolate and identify biopeptides. Alcalase 2.4 L was found to produce the highest antioxidative hydrolysate product after four-hour hydrolysis. Fractionating this bioactive product using ultrafiltration obtained two fractions with different molecular weights (MW) and antioxidative activity. The low-molecular-weight fraction (LMWF) with MW <3 kDa had higher DPPH scavenging activity with the IC50 value of 2.97 ± 0.33 compared to 3.76 ± 0.15 mg/mL of the high-molecular-weight fraction (HMWF) with MW >3 kDa. Two stronger antioxidative fractions (F-A and F-B) with the respective significant lower IC50 values of 0.83 ± 0.22 and 1.52 ± 0.29 mg/mL were isolated from the LMWF using gel filtration with a Sephadex G-25 column. Based on LC-MS/MS analysis of the F-A, 230 peptides derived from 108 A. maxima proteins were determined. Notably, different antioxidative peptides possessing various bioactivities, including antioxidation, were detected with high predicted scores together with in silico analyses on their stability and toxicity. This study established knowledge and technology to further value-add to the spent A. maxima biomass by optimizing hydrolysis and fraction processes to produce antioxidative peptides with Alcalase 2.4 L after two products already produced in a biorefinery. These bioactive peptides have potential applications in food and nutraceutical products.

Abstract
Sea cucumber peptides (SCPs) have various functional activities. However, studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SCPs from the perspective of sex hormones are still lacking. In this study, normal and premature ovarian failure (POF) female mice were used to assess the effect of SCPs on the sex hormones. The ovarian and uterine indices were not influenced by SCP both in normal and POF mice. In normal mice, SCP showed no significant impact on the estrous cycle, ovarian, uterine morphology, sex hormone levels, and sex hormone synthesis-related genes of the ovary. However, 0.6 mg per g bw dosage of SCP (SCPH) statistically increased mapk1 expression on normal mice hypothalamus. In POF mice, SCPH played a more positive role than a low dosage of SCP (0.2 mg per g bw). SCP ameliorated POF-induced estrous cycle disturbances and significantly increased serum estradiol, testosterone, and AMH levels. Moreover, SCP increased the synthesis of the sex hormone by upregulating the expression of StAR, Fshr, and Cyp19a1 in the ovary, which might be due to the activation of the cAMP-related signaling pathways. The upregulation of mapk1, Esr1, and Gnrh was also observed in the hypothalamus. Together, SCP is safe for normal female mice and seems to have positive effects on POF mice from sex hormone regulation. However, the risk of excessive supplementation of sex hormones induced by the SCP intake in POF mice needs to be further explored.

Abstract
Bioinformatic tools are widely used in predicting potent bioactive peptides from food derived materials. This study was focused on utilizing sea cucumber processing by-products for generating antioxidant and ACE inhibitory peptides by application of a range of in silico techniques. Identified peptides using LC-MS/MS were virtually screened by PepRank technique followed by in silico proteolysis simulation with representative digestive enzymes using BIOPEP-UWMTM data base tool. The resultant peptides after simulated digestion were evaluated for their toxicity using ToxinPred software. All digestive resistance peptides were found to be non-toxic and displayed favorable functional properties indicating their potential for use in a wide range of food applications, including hydrophobic and hydrophilic systems. Identified peptides were further assessed for their medicinal characteristics by employing SwissADME web-based application. Our findings provide an insight on potential use of undervalued sea cucumber processing discards for functional food product development and natural pharmaceutical ingredients attributed to the oral drug discovery process.

Abstract
Sea cucumbers are considered a luxury food item and used locally in traditional medication due to their impressive nutritional profile and curative effects. Sea cucumbers contain a wide range of bioactive compounds, namely phenolics, polysaccharides, proteins (collagen and peptides), carotenoids, and saponins, demonstrating strong antioxidant and other activities. In particular, phenolic compounds, mainly phenolic acids and flavonoids, are abundant in this marine invertebrate and exhibit antioxidant activity. Protein hydrolysates and peptides obtained from sea cucumbers exhibit antioxidant potential, mainly dependent on the amino acid compositions and sequences as well as molecular weight, displayed for those of ≤20 kDa. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of sea cucumber polysaccharides, including fucosylated chondroitin sulfate and fucan, is a combination of numerous factors and is mostly associated with molecular weight, degree of sulfation, and type of major sugars. However, the activity of these bioactive compounds typically depends on the sea cucumber species, harvesting location, food habit, body part, and processing methods employed. This review summarizes the antioxidant activity of bioactive compounds obtained from sea cucumbers and their by-products for the first time. The mechanism of actions, chemical structures, and factors affecting the antioxidant activity are also discussed, along with the associated health benefits.

Abstract
For years, compounds of natural origin have been the subject of extensive biomedical research due to very interesting, new ingredients potentially useful for various pharmaceutical, medical and industrial applications. The therapeutic properties and healing benefits of sea cucumbers may result from the presence of numerous, biologically active ingredients. Sperm subjected to processing and subsequent storage at low temperatures experience a number of damage, including the loss of the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane, DNA and acrosome defragmentation. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to investigate the cytoprotective potential of sea cucumber extract against cryopreserved sperm and semen fertility rate. Commercially available sea cucumber extract was taken from the cellulose shell, then 790 mg of powder was weighed out and placed in 3 glass tubes containing, respectively: 10 mL of water-glycerin solution (WG), water-ethanol (EC), glycerin-ethanol (GE), glycerin-DMSO (DG). Tubes were mixed with vortex for 3 min, then placed in a water bath and incubated for 16 h at 40 °C. Six simmental bulls, 3 years old, of known health status were used for the experiment. Semen was collected from each male once a week (for 18 weeks) using an artificial vagina. After an initial assessment of semen quality, the ejaculates were pooled to eliminate individual differences between males, then diluted to a final concentration of 80 × 106 sperm/mL with a commercial extender (Optixcell, IMV, L’Aigle, France) and divided into 16 equal samples. Control (C) without additive, the test samples contained 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 µL WG, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 µL WE, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 µL GE, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 µL DG. Semen was frozen/thawed and assessed for motility, viability, DNA defragmentation, mitochondrial membrane potential and acrosome integrity. It was shown a positive effect of water-glycerin (WG) and glycerine-ethanol (GE) extracts on the efficiency of sperm preservation at low temperatures. Established that, depending on the type of prepared extract, the sea cucumber can have both cytoprotective (WG, GE, WE) and cytotoxic (DG) effects. Moreover, too high concentrations of the extract can adversely affect the sperm in terms of parameters such as viability, motility, mitochondrial potential, and the integrity of the acrosome or DNA of cells. The present study, thanks to the use of model animals to study the cytoprotective potential of the sea cucumber extract, proves that it can be a potential candidate for use in semen cryopreservation technology to improve the efficiency of storage at low temperatures. Further research is needed to optimize the composition of individual types of extracts and their effect on sperm. The highest effectiveness of female fertilization was observed when doses from GE groups (2 and 4) were used for insemination. The results of this analysis prove that the addition of the tested extract may improve the fertilization efficiency.

Enzymatic hydrolysis-offline and membrane separation (EH-offline MS), enzymatic membrane reactor (EMR) (various operational modes), and conjoined nanofilter-purification (desalination) were used to produce highly stable antihypertensive and antioxidative peptides from ultrasonic-slurry viscosity reduced sea cucumber (A. japonicus) protein. The adoption of the optimum batch parameters by EMR-gradient diafiltration feeding (GDF), water feeding, and substrate feeding ensured a significant (p < 0.05) enhancement in protein conversion degree (PCD) by 60.39, 46.69, and 23.33%, respectively, over the conventional EH-offline MS. Also, the antihypertensive activity (ACE-inhibitory potency) of the peptides produced was in the order EMR-GDF > substrate feeding > water feeding > batch process > EH-offline MS. The EMR-GDF and nanofilter-purification produced highly digestible peptides with ACE-inhibition activities of 79.44% and 77.57% for gastric and gastrointestinal digests, respectively. Peptides with molecular weights of 1000-500 Da and 500 Da significantly contributed to the antihypertensive potency of desalinated peptides. In vitro simulated peptides showed a significant increase in the hydroxyl radical scavenging activity for gastric (77.27%) and gastrointestinal (85.32%) digests. The antioxidative stability of the produced peptides was least affected by high-temperature storage. The high arginine (Arg) and hydrophobic amino acid (HAA) content of the peptides resulted in their improved digestibility. Therefore, conjoined EMR-GDF and nanofilter-purification in the production of highly stable desalinated bioactive peptides for industrial applications could be a viable alternative.

Abstract
The hydrolysates from Apostichopus japonicus sea cucumber are an important source of nitrogen that may be added to foods. We evaluated the effect of A. japonicus hydrolysates on inflammation-associated leukocyte recruitment. The results revealed that leukocyte migration to the site of injury was significantly blocked by AJH-1 (<10 kDa), suggesting a protective effect against CuSO4 -induced neuromast damage in a zebrafish model. Based on liquid chromatography/time-of-flight/mass spectrometry, and metabolomic analysis, the nine biomarker candidates in AJH-1 were Val, Ala-Pro-Arg, Gly-Lys, Asp propyl ester, Glu methyl ester, His butyl ester, Ile-Ala-Ala-Lys, Tyr-Lys, and Asn-Pro-Gly-Lys. We used molecular docking to predict the binding affinity and docked position of the peptides onto the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). All the identified peptides had adequate binding affinity toward ACE, especially peptides Ala-Pro-Arg and Gly-Lys. These peptides may be used in the development of therapeutic foods. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The study revealed the anti-inflammatory properties of the fractionated sea cucumber protein hydrolysate (<10 kDa). The characteristic peptides may be used as functional ingredients in nutraceutical foods and beverages.

Abstract
Oxidative stress results when the production of oxidants outweighs the capacity of the antioxidant defence mechanisms. This can lead to pathological conditions including cancer and neurodegeneration. Consequently, there is considerable interest in compounds with antioxidant activity, including those from natural sources. Here, we characterise the antioxidant activity of three novel peptides identified in protein hydrolysates from the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. Under oxidative stress conditions, synthetic versions of the sea cucumber peptides significantly compensate for glutathione depletion, decrease mitochondrial superoxide levels, and alleviate mitophagy in human neuroblastoma cells. Moreover, orally supplied peptides improve survival of the Caenorhabditis elegans after treatment with paraquat, the latter of which leads to the production of excessive oxidative stress. Thus, the sea cucumber peptides exhibit antioxidant activity at both the cellular and organism levels and might prove attractive as nutritional supplements for healthy ageing.

Abstract
Marine organisms are considered a cache of biologically active metabolites with pharmaceutical, functional, and nutraceutical properties. Among these, marine bioactive peptides (MBAs) present in diverse marine species (fish, sponges, cyanobacteria, fungi, ascidians, seaweeds, & mollusks) have acquired attention owing to their broad-spectrum health-promoting benefits. Nowadays, scientists are keener exploring marine bioactive peptides precisely due to their unique structural and biological properties. These MBAs have reported ameliorating potential against different diseases like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, HIV, cancer, oxidation, and inflammation. Furthermore, MBAs isolated from various marine organisms may also have a beneficial role in the cosmetic, nutraceutical, and food industries. Few marine peptides and their derivative are approved for commercial use, while many MBAs are in various pre-clinical and clinical trials. This review mainly focuses on the diversity of marine bioactive peptides in marine organisms and their production procedures, such as chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis. Moreover, MBAs' therapeutic and biological potential has also been critically discussed herein, along with their status in drug discovery, pre-clinical and clinical trials.

Abstract
A comprehensive antioxidant evaluation was performed on enzymatic hydrolysates of Stichopus
japonicus (S. japonicus) using Vero cells and zebrafish models for in vitro and in vivo studies, respectively. S. japonicus was hydrolyzed with food-grade enzymes (alcalase, α-chymotrypsin, flavourzyme, kojizyme, neutrase, papain, pepsin, protamex, and trypsin), and the free radical scavenging activities were screened via electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. According to the results, the enzymatic hydrolysates contained high protein and relatively low polysaccharide and sulfate contents. Among these hydrolysates, the α-chymotrypsin assisted hydrolysate from S. japonicus (α-chy) showed high yield and protein content, and strong hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. Therefore, α-chy was chosen for further purification. The α-chy was fractionated by ultrafiltration into three ultrafiltration (UF) fractions based on their molecular weight: >10 kDa (α-chy-I), 5-10 kDa (α-chy-II), and <5 kDa (α-chy-III), and we evaluated their antioxidant properties in H2O2 exposed Vero cells. The α-chy and its UF fractions significantly decreased the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and increased cell viability in H2O2 exposed Vero cells. Among them, α-chy-III effectively declined the intracellular ROS levels and increased cell viability and exhibited protection against H2O2 induced apoptotic damage. Furthermore, α-chy-III remarkably attenuated the cell death, intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation in H2O2 exposed zebrafish embryos. Altogether, our findings demonstrated that α-chy and its α-chy-III from S. japonicus possess strong antioxidant activities that could be utilized as a bioactive ingredient for functional food industries.

Abstract
Rice by-products, generated through the milling processes, have recently been recognized as a potential source of bioactive compounds, such as proteins, essential amino acids, and phenolics. Owing to their antioxidant capacity (which improve the storage stability of foods), these compounds have gained much attention because of their beneficial impacts on human health. It has to be noted that large quantities of rice by-products are not efficiently utilized, which may result in industrial wastes and environmental consequences. Thence, the aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive insight on the antioxidant capabilities, extraction, identification, functional attributes, and applications of bioactive hydrolysates and peptides derived from rice bran protein. This overview would provide an insight on rice bran proteins, which are abundant in bioactive peptides, and could be used as value-added products in food and pharmaceutical applications. Inclusion of bioactive peptides to prevent food spoilage while maintaining food safety has also been highlighted.

Abstract
Sea cucumber is a valuable marine food that has antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity functionalities. Sea cucumber ovum (SCO) may contain functional components, however, it is considered to be a waste product during industrial processing. In order to make good use of SCO, this work investigated the effects of freeze-dried SCO powder on NAFLD, using a rat model, through iBT labeling proteomics techniques, tracking changes in the hepatic protein profiles of rats whose diets were supplemented with SCO powder. Male rats were fed with standard food, a high fat diet (HFD), or a HFD supplemented with 150 mg per kg BW or 450 mg per kg BW SCO powder for 6 weeks. Compared with the HFD, low-dose SCO supplementation in the diet could significantly reduce body weight gain and liver weight. Furthermore, in total, 5922 proteins were identified, and 767 proteins were found to be significantly different proteins (p < 0.05) among all four groups. Most of the significantly different proteins were related to apoptosis and lipid metabolism. Fadd, Dci, and Aif1 have been identified as key proteins in the pathways related to apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and inflammation. The results in this study provide an overview of the SCO-induced changes in the liver proteome of NAFLD, which may help us to understand the molecular mechanism behind the effects of SCO on the alleviation of NAFLD.

Abstract
Antioxidant peptides have elicited interest for the versatility of their use in the food and pharmaceutical industry. In the current study, antioxidant peptides were prepared by microwave-assisted alkaline protease hydrolysis of collagen from sea cucumber (Acaudina molpadioides). The results showed that microwave irradiation significantly improved the degree of hydrolysis of collagen and the hydroxyl radical (OH⋅) scavenging activity of hydrolysate. The content and OH⋅ scavenging activity of collagen peptides with molecular weight ≤ 1 kDa (CPS) in the hydrolysate obtained at 250 W increased significantly compared with the non-microwave-assisted control. CPS could scavenge OH⋅ and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical in a dose-dependent manner. The scavenging activity of OH⋅ and DPPH radical was 93.1% and 41.2%, respectively, at CPS concentration of 1 mg/mL. CPS could significantly promote RAW264.7 cell proliferation and reduce the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) level of H2O2-induced damage in RAW264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, all CPS-treated groups exhibited an increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) level compared with the control. These results showed that CPS could effectively protect RAW264.7 cells from H2O2-induced damage, implying the potential utilization of CPS as a natural antioxidant for food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
A novel sulfated polysaccharide (SCVP-1) was isolated from sea cucumber viscera and purified to elucidate its structure and immune-enhancing ability. SCVP-1 was found to be a homogeneous polysaccharide with a relative molecular weight of 180.8 kDa and composed of total sugars (60.2 ± 2.6%), uronic acid (15.3 ± 1.8%), proteins (6.8 ± 0.8%), and sulfate groups (18.1 ± 0.9%). SCVP-1 consisted of mannose, glucosamine, glucuronic acid, N-acetyl-galactosamine, glucose, galactose and fucose at an approximate molar ratio of 1.00:1.41:0.88:2.14:1.90:1.12:1.24. The fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses showed that SCVP-1 was a kind of glycosaminoglycan. And the sulfation patterns of the fucose branches were Fuc2,4S, Fuc3,4S and Fuc0S. The surface morphology of SCVP-1 presented loose and irregular sheet structure formed by aggregation of polysaccharide molecules with spherical structure. Moreover, SCVP-1 promoted the production of nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) by RAW264.7 cells as well as the expression of related genes (iNOS, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) and also enhanced their phagocytic activity through TLR4-mediated activation of the MAPKs and NF-κB signaling pathways. This study suggests that sea cucumber viscera are good sources of polysaccharides and SCVP-1 might be a novel immunomodulator.

Abstract
A rapid and sensitive measurement technique was used to investigate the mechanism of aroma compounds changes in SCPPs under the storage conditions with hygroscopicity and no-microorganism (HNM), nonhygroscopicity and no-microorganism (NHNM) and hygroscopicity and microorganism (HM) by HS-GC-IMS. The types and signal of aroma compounds increased obviously at the 5th day under the storage condition (HNM and HM). The signal of majority of aroma compounds decreased gradually since the 5th day. However, during the storage of SCPPs for 15 days, the total signals of aldehydes, ketones and alcohols gradually increased and reached a maximum. Thereinto, the saturated aldehydes such as hexanal had been produced as an off-flavor. These off-flavor compounds principally including aldehydes and ketones could be generated through Maillard reaction, while alcohols could be generated by microbial fermentation. The study discovered moisture adsorption and microorganism during storage could affect aroma compounds of SCPPs and the effect of moisture absorption was greater than microorganisms.

Abstract
The effects of amino acids Gln and Lys on the antioxidant ability of peptides were investigated in this study. The identified peptides Lys-Met-Asp-Asp-Lys (KMDDK), Lys-Met-Asp-Asp-Gln (KMDDQ), Gln-Met-Asp-Asp-Lys (QMDDK), and Gln-Met-Asp-Asp-Gln (QMDDQ) were used to investigate their antioxidant activity and the structure-activity relationship by using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS, flow cytometry, laser scanning confocal microscopy and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results indicated that the four pentapeptides significantly increased the viability of PC12 cells and inhibited cell apoptosis and that QMDDQ possessed a stronger survival activity than the others in cell apoptosis. Moreover, the four peptides significantly decreased the scopolamine-induced ROS and LDH content in PC12 cells, and upregulated the SOD activity to the level of the scopolamine group. The DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging of QMDDQ were higher than those of the other peptides at 0.5 mg mL-1 and 1.0 mg mL-1 (P < 0.05). 1H NMR spectra revealed that the prominent antioxidant ability of QMDDQ might be attributed to more active hydrogen sites and functional groups. The carboxyl active hydrogen atoms and amino active hydrogen atoms as active sites play a critical role in the antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Mercury is one of the most harmful pollutant that threat marine biota. This study assessed the Hg impact on the fatty acid (FA) composition and the antioxidant statues in Holothuria forskali body wall tissue. Specimens were exposed to HgCl2 graded doses (40, 80 and 160 μg L-1) for 96 h. A decrease in linoleic, arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acid levels and an increase of docosahexaenoic acid were mainly observed at the nominal tested dose. The exposure to the upper dose promoted oxidative stress with an increase of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, advanced oxidation protein product, glutathione and non-protein thiols levels. Moreover, a decrease in catalase and an increase in superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were observed. Yet, an increase of the metallothionein level was registered in all treated groups. This study confirmed the Hg toxicity on the redox statue of H. forskali and highlighted the usefulness of the FA composition as an early sensitive bioindicators.

Abstract
This review presents a detailed analysis of published research data focused on the pharmacological activity exerted by biologically active compounds isolated from sea cucumbers belonging to the class of Holothuroidea, phylum Echinodermata. The review contains descriptions of the structure, physico-chemical properties and pharmacological effects of these active substances. Particular attention is given to compounds with anticoagulant, antithrombotic, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-infectious, immune-stimulating and anti-ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) activities as well as to the substances exerting a regulating influence on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. All these compounds may be considered as prototypes for development of new pharmaceutical substances and medicines.

Abstract
A previous study has shown that tilapia fish skin gelatin hydrolysates inhibited photoaging in vivo, and that, Leu-Ser-Gly-Tyr-Gly-Pro (LSGYGP) identified in the hydrolysate had a high hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. In this study, activities of LSGYGP were further evaluated using ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs). UVB irradiation significantly increased the intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activities and decreased the content of collagen in MEFs. LSGYGP reduced the intercellular ROS generation in UVB-induced MEFs. Meanwhile, the decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the increase of malondiaidehyde (MDA) content were inhibited by LSGYGP. LSGYGP reduced MMP-1 and MMP-9 activities in a dose-dependent manner. Molecular docking simulation indicated that LSGYGP inhibited MMPs activities by docking the active sites of MMP-1 and MMP-9. Furthermore, LSGYGP also affected the intercellular phosphorylation of UVB-induced the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. LSGYGP could protect collagen synthesis in MEFs under UVB irradiation by inhibiting oxidative stress and regulating MMPs activities.

Abstract
Tilapia skin gelatin hydrolysates (TSGHs) were prepared by simulated gastrointestinal digestion and separated by gel filtration and semi-preparative reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The anti-photoaging effects were evaluated using an ultraviolet radiation B (UVB)-induced mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) photoaging model in vitro. Three fractions from TSGHs with high inhibitory intercellular matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) activities and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were obtained. Three key peptides, GYTGL, LGATGL, and VLGL, were identified, and their C terminate was Gly-Leu. Three peptides were synthesized and exhibited a significant inhibition of intercellular MMP-1 activity and ROS production. Furthermore, three peptides inhibiting MMP-1 activities were evaluated through their docking of S1' and S3' active pockets of MMP-1. Hydrogen bonds and C terminate Gly-Leu played important roles. Finally, the protective effects of three peptides on intercellular collagen in UVB-induced MEFs were compared. Our results indicated that tilapia gelatin peptides exhibited potential activities to prevent and regulate photoaging.

Abstract
The effects of Apostichopus japonicus enzymatic hydrolysate on the regulation of dyslipidemia, pathoglycemia, and transcription changes in kidney tissues of db/db mice were evaluated. In this study, the symptoms of diabetes in db/db mice were alleviated after 10 weeks of treatments with low (db/db + LD group) and high dose (db/db + HD group) of Apostichopus japonicus enzymatic hydrolysate, and the high dose treatment showed a better antidiabetic effect. Compared with the db/db group, the fasting blood glucose levels (36.84 ± 7.82 vs 25.18 ± 6.84 mmol/L, P < 0.01), the urine glucose levels (45.44 ± 3.93 vs 22.66 ± 5.58 mmol/L, P < 0.01), and the serum insulin sensitivity index (-4.65 ± 0.43 vs -4.74 ± 0.75, P > 0.05) in the db/db + HD group were decreased, whereas the fasting plasma insulin (3.12 ± 1.08 vs 5.54 ± 1.82 μg/L, P < 0.01) and the serum insulin resistance index (5.01 ± 2.02 vs 5.96 ± 2.49, P < 0.05) were increased. Subsequently, the kidney transcription profiles were measured in the db/db group and db/db + HD group via microarray, and the results show that Apostichopus japonicus hydrolysate induced differential expression of 77 genes. Among these genes, the down-regulation of genes ntrK1 and ptpN5 played vital roles, as this effect induced the further down-regulation of neurotrophin tyrosine kinase, protein tyrosine phosphatase, and other transcription factors, which are involved in the classical mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and p38MAPK signaling pathways. The inhibited MAPK and p38MAPK signaling pathways are involved in glycometabolism and the control of lipid metabolism, and they regulate the occurrence and development of diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
Colochirus robustus, a species of sea cucumber, has long been used in East and Southeast Asia as nutritious food as well as for certain medicinal purpose. Studies have shown a number of biological functions associated with consumption of sea cucumber, many of which are attributed to its major component, sea cucumber peptides (SCP). However, how SCP impacts immune system, which is critical for host defense, has not been defined. To address this issue, in the present study, we conducted comprehensive analysis of immune function after oral administration of SCP (0, 25, 50 and 75 mg/kg body weigh) for eight weeks in C57BL/6 mice. We found that SCP treatment significantly enhanced lymphocyte proliferation, serum albumin (ALB) levels, and the natural killer (NK) cell activity. Moreover, SCP promoted functions of helper T cells (Th) as indicated by increased production of Th1 type cytokines of Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, Interferon (IFN)-γ and TNF-α and Th2 type cytokines (IL-4, IL-6 and IL-10). To determine the effective components, SCP was hydrolyzed into 16 types of constituent amino acids in simulated gastrointestinal digestion and these hydrolytic amino acids (HAA) were used for the mechanistic studies in the in vitro models. Results showed that HAA enhanced lymphocyte proliferation and production of IL-2, IL-10 and IFN-γ. Furthermore, CD3ζ (CD3ζ) and ζ-chain-associated protein kinase 70 (ZAP-70), the signaling molecules essential for activating T lymphocytes, were significantly up-regulated after HAA treatment. In summary, our results suggest that SCP is effective in enhancing immune function by activating T cells via impacting CD3ζ- and ZAP-70-mediated signaling pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sea cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) is a well-known nutritious and luxurious seafood in Asia which has attracted increasing attention because of its nutrition and bioactivities in recent years. In this study, the anti-fatigue activity of sea cucumber peptides (SCP) prepared from S. japonicus was evaluated in a load-induced endurance swimming model. RESULTS The SCP prepared in this study was mainly made up of low-molecular-weight peptides (<2 kDa). The analysis result of amino acid composition revealed that SCP was rich in glycine, glutamic acid and proline. The endurance capability of rats to fatigue was significantly improved by SCP treatment. Meanwhile, the remarkable alterations of energy metabolic markers, antioxidant enzymes, antioxidant capacity and oxidative stress biomarkers were normalized. Moreover, administration of SCP could modulate alterations of inflammatory cytokines and downregulate the overexpression of TRL4 and NF-κB. CONCLUSION SCP has anti-fatigue activity and it exerted its anti-fatigue effect probably through normalizing energy metabolism as well as alleviating oxidative damage and inflammatory responses. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Marine invertebrates, such as oysters, mussels, clams, scallop, jellyfishes, squids, prawns, sea cucumbers and sea squirts, are consumed as foods. These edible marine invertebrates are sources of potent bioactive peptides. The last two decades have seen a surge of interest in the discovery of antioxidant peptides from edible marine invertebrates. Enzymatic hydrolysis is an efficient strategy commonly used for releasing antioxidant peptides from food proteins. A growing number of antioxidant peptide sequences have been identified from the enzymatic hydrolysates of edible marine invertebrates. Antioxidant peptides have potential applications in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In this review, we first give a brief overview of the current state of progress of antioxidant peptide research, with special attention to marine antioxidant peptides. We then focus on 22 investigations which identified 32 antioxidant peptides from enzymatic hydrolysates of edible marine invertebrates. Strategies adopted by various research groups in the purification and identification of the antioxidant peptides will be summarized. Structural characteristic of the peptide sequences in relation to their antioxidant activities will be reviewed. Potential applications of the peptide sequences and future research prospects will also be discussed.
