Abstract
The formation, stability, and decay of foams occur under dynamic conditions. Given their inherent complexity, an accurate description of these subprocesses necessitates an analysis of multiple factors, with a particular focus on the formation and structure of the adsorption layer. Single rising bubble techniques facilitate a deeper comprehension of the dynamics of diverse phenomena in foams, as they yield experimental data under dynamic conditions. This review examines the subtle differences in the dynamic adsorption structures of low-molecular-weight surfactants and proteins at the liquid/gas interface. These differences can significantly impact interfacial properties and potentially alter our understanding of the mechanisms behind the formation of the Dynamic Adsorption Layer (DAL). The primary techniques under consideration are local velocity profiles (LVPs) of single rising bubbles and dynamic fluid-film interferometry (DFI) of the thin liquid film formed at the collision of a bubble with a free liquid surface. We provide a summary of recent findings on the topic. Due to the limited availability of comprehensive datasets on proteins, our discussion is partially supplemented by newly obtained unpublished data. We highlight key differences in the behavior of bubbles in low-molecular-weight surfactant solutions versus protein solutions that have previously been overlooked in the literature. We explore their potential origins in the context of DAL dynamics and architecture.

Abstract
The hydrophilic head structure can significantly influence the interfacial performance of biobased zwitterionic surfactants. Among various hydrophilic groups, the hydroxyl group plays a considerable role in the influence on interfacial activity. However, the relevant mechanism remains to be elucidated. To study this point, in this work two new biobased zwitterionic surfactants, anisole-based oleamide ethyl hydroxypropyl sulfonyl quaternary ammonium salt (AEHSQA) and anisole-based oleamide ethyl sulfonylpropyl quaternary ammonium salt (AESPQA), were synthesized from biomass material methyl oleate, and the interfacial performances of the two surfactants were evaluated. It showed that AEHSQA can lower the interfacial tensions between crude oil and groundwater to the ultralow level (<10-2 mN/m) at a temperature of up to 120 °C and a concentration of Ca2+ of up to 2500 mg/L with one more β-hydroxyl group, while the corresponding tolerances of AESPQA are only 90 °C and 250 mg/L. Molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) was employed to study the interfacial behaviors of surfactant molecules at the oil-water interface under conditions of different temperatures and salinities. The results of MDS implied that introducing a hydroxyl group could improve the thermal resistance and salt tolerance of zwitterionic surfactants via resisting the hydrophilicity decline and interfacial looseness of surfactant molecules resulting from the increases in temperature and salinity.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are biodegradable, non-toxic, and environmentally beneficial substances that are produced by microorganisms. Due to their chemical characteristics and stability in various environmental circumstances, biosurfactants are low-molecular-weight, surface-active molecules of great industrial importance. The choice of the producer microbe, kind of substrate, and purification technique determine the chemistry of a biosurfactant and its production cost. Biosurfactants' amphiphilic nature has proven to be quite advantageous, allowing them to disperse onto two immiscible surfaces while lowering the interfacial surface tension and boosting the solubility of hydrophobic substances. Microbial surfactants are replacing their chemical counterparts in research and usage because of their low or non-toxic nature, durability at higher temperatures, capacity to endure wide range of pH variations and degrade naturally. Biosurfactants are often used as anti-adhesives, emulsifying/de-emulsifying agents, spreading agents, foaming agents, and detergents that have significance in a range of industries such as agriculture, biomedical, bioremediation, the manufacturing industry, and cosmetic. Recent advancements in biosurfactant production have enhanced its usefulness and research interest in a circular economy framework. These advancements include the use of alternative substrates, including various forms of organic waste and solid-state fermentation. Here, we attempted a comprehensive review of biosurfactants, their usage, latest research, limitations, and future aspects.

Abstract
Surfactants are virtually used across all industries where they can fulfill a multitude of roles, such as detergents, emulsifiers, and dispersants, as well as wetting, foaming, and flotation agents. N-Acyl-N-alkyl-d-glucamides are nonionic surfactants that can be synthesized from inexpensive natural resources. They have a broad range of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values, depending on the length of the alkyl chain. This chemical diversity and versatility allow customization of surfactant properties, making these chemicals useful for a diverse range of industrial purposes. In this work, six N-acyl-N-alkyl-d-glucamides have been prepared by exploiting immobilized scavengers and reagents in a flow-batch mode. Moreover, the interfacial properties (both surface and interfacial tensions) of two selected glucamide-based surfactants were evaluated.

Abstract
Natural surfactants are surface-active molecules synthesized from renewable resources (i.e., plants, animals, or microorganisms) and possess properties comparable to conventional surfactants, making them an environmentally friendly potential alternative to petrochemical surfactants. Additionally, they exhibit biological properties such as anti-microbial properties, biodegradability, and less toxicity, allowing their use in everyday products with minimal risk to human health and the environment. Based on their mode of production, natural surfactants can be classified into first-generation or bio-based surfactants and second-generation or biosurfactants, although their definition may vary depending on the author in the literature. This review offers an extensive classification of bio-based surfactants and biosurfactants, focusing on their composition, natural sources, production methods, and potential applications across various industries. Furthermore, the main challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract
Despite extensive research on the use of salts to enhance micellar growth, numerous questions remain regarding the impact of ionic exchange and molecular structure on charge neutralization. This study looks into how certain cations (Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) affect the structure of a cocamidopropyl betaine CAPB and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate SDBS surfactant mixture, aiming toward applications in targeted delivery systems. The mixture consists of a zwitterionic surfactant, cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), combined in varying molar ratios at a total concentration of 200 mM. We characterized the macroscale properties through rheological measurements and obtained detailed structural insights using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The findings reveal that increasing the concentration of cations in the CAPB/SDBS mixture induces the formation of peaks in the zero-shear viscosity as a function of salt concentration (salt curve). Analysis through cryo-EM and SAXS showed that these viscosity peaks are related to the change of micellar assemblies from entangled worm-like micelles to branched worm-like micelles and then to bilayer structures (vesicles). The specific cation concentration at which the zero-shear viscosity peak occurs, as well as the maximum viscosity, is strongly influenced by the type of cation present in the CAPB/SDBS solutions, a phenomenon explained by the Hofmeister series. Notably, the differing affinities of cations for the carboxylate COO- and sulfite SO3- groups and the partial dehydration of micelles contribute to the lower concentration of magnesium cations required to reach the viscosity peak compared to calcium cations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Burkholderia thailandensis E264 is a non-pathogenic soil bacterium that produces rhamnolipids (RLs), which are utilised in various fields. Although studies have illustrated changes in RLs congeners in response to environmental factors, studies on the influence of temperature on the RLs congeners produced by B. thailandensis E264 are scarce. OBJECTIVE It was hypothesised that RL congeners will be distributed differently at different temperature, which caused the produced RL to have different properties. This brought about the idea of a tailored production of RL for specific application through temperature control. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the distribution of RLs congeners by B. thailandensis E264 in response to different temperatures. METHODOLOGY B. thailandensis E264 was grown at three different temperatures (25 °C, 30 °C, and 37 °C) for nine days and subjected to metabolomic analysis using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QToF-MS). RESULTS The findings indicated that temperature significantly affected the metabolomic distribution of B. thailandensis E264, with mono-rhamno-mono-lipid and mono-rhamno-di-lipid being the predominant metabolites at 37 °C and 30 °C, with relative abundances of 64.1% and 65.3%, respectively. In comparison, di-rhamno-di-lipid was detected at 25 °C with an overall relative abundance of 77.7%. CONCLUSION This investigation showed that changing the cultivation temperature of the non-pathogenic B. thailandensis E264 produces diverse rhamnolipid congeners, which could enable the targeted synthesis of specific RLs for various applications and increase the market value of biosurfactants.

Abstract
Saponins are a diverse class of secondary metabolites that are often reported to exhibit a variety of pharmacological applications. While research into the elucidation and application of plant and class Holothuroidea-derived saponins (i.e., sea cucumbers) is extensive, the class Asteroidea-derived saponins (i.e., seastars) have been largely overlooked and primarily limited to elucidation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the cytotoxic activities of asteroid-derived saponins against various cell cultures, for instance, mammalian erythrocytes, multiple microbial strains and cancer cell lines, including melanoma, breast, colon, and lung cancers. Highlighting the distinct structural variations in these saponins, this review examines their selective cytotoxicity and potency, with many demonstrating IC50 values in the low micromolar range. Specific compounds, such as asterosaponins and polyhydroxylated saponins, exhibit noteworthy effects, particularly against melanoma and lung carcinoma cells, while triterpenoid saponins were found to be highly cytotoxic to both erythrocytes and fungal cells. This review also addresses gaps in the research area, including the need for additional in vitro antimicrobial studies, in vivo studies, and further exploration of their mechanisms of action. By consolidating recent findings, we have shed light on the therapeutic potential of asteroid-derived steroidal saponins in developing novel antimicrobial and anticancer agents.

Abstract
Lycopene is a natural carotenoid with well-known benefits due to its antioxidant properties, including an anti-inflammatory effect in colorectal cancer and anti-angiogenic effects along with a reduction in the risk of prostate cancer and coronary heart disease. Due to their poor water solubility, photosensitivity and heat sensitivity, their incorporation in cosmetic and food matrices should be through encapsulation systems. In the present work, lycopene-loaded emulsions were prepared using two different types of stabilizers: non-ionic surfactants, testing several ratios of Tween 80 and Span 80, and chitosan, using chitosans of different viscosities and molecular weights. Soybean oil was found to be a suitable candidate for O/W emulsion preparation. Lycopene encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 70-75% and loading capacities of 0.14 mg/g were registered in stable emulsions stabilized either by non-ionic surfactants or acidified chitosans. Therefore, chitosan is a good alternative as a sustainable stabilizer to partially replace traditional synthetic ingredients with a new biodegradable, renewable and biocompatible material which could contribute to reduce the environmental impact as well as the ingestion of synthetic toxic materials by humans, decreasing their risk of suffering from chronic and complex pathologies, among which several types of cancer stand out.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the biosurfactants (BSs) production by SM-23 strain of Virgibacillus identified by phenotypical and WGS analysis as Virgibacillus massiliensis. We first demonstrated the lipopeptides production by Virgibacillus massiliensis specie and studied their biochemical and molecular analysis as well as their biological potential. The GC-MS analysis indicated that methyl.2-hyroxydodecanoate was the major fatty acid compound with 33.22%. The maximum BSs production was obtained in LB medium supplemented by 1% olive oil (v/v) at 30 °C and 5% NaCl with 1.92 g/l. The obtained results revealed the significant biosurfactants/bioemulsifier potential compared to triton X100 with E24 of 100%, and an emulsification stability SE of 83%. The lipopeptides types were identified by FTIR analysis. A strong antimicrobial action was observed by the produced lipopeptides by the agar diffusion method against E.coli, K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, Fusarium sp, Alternaria sp, and Phytophtora sp. The complete genome sequencing showed genes involved in the synthesis of multiple compounds identified as amphipathic cyclic lipopeptides such as locillomycin/locillomycin B/locillomycin C and bacillibactin. Our results highlighted significant lipopeptides properties displayed by V. massiliensis that can be exploited to develop a novel strategy in the formulation of natural biocidal and fungicidal agents. Abstract
Biofilms are microbial aggregates encased in a matrix that is attached to biological or nonbiological surfaces and constitute serious problems in food, medical, and marine industries and can have major negative effects on both health and the economy. Biofilm's complex microbial community provides a resistant environment that is difficult to eradicate and is extremely resilient to antibiotics and sanitizers. There are various conventional techniques for combating biofilms, including, chemical removal, physical or mechanical removal, use of antibiotics and disinfectants to destroy biofilm producing organisms. In contrast to free living planktonic cells, biofilms are very resistant to these methods. Hence, new strategies that differ from traditional approaches are urgently required. Microbial world offers a wide range of effective "green" compounds such as biosurfactants. They outperform synthetic surfactants in terms of biodegradability, superior stabilization, and reduced toxicity concerns. They also have better antiadhesive and anti-biofilm capabilities which can be used to treat biofilm-related problems. Sophorolipids (SLs) are a major type of biosurfactants that have gained immense interest in the healthcare industries because of their antiadhesive and anti-biofilm properties. Sophorolipids may therefore prove to be attractive substances that can be used in biomedical applications as adjuvant to other antibiotics against some infections through growth inhibition and/or biofilm disruption.

Abstract
We investigated the potential ecological risks and harm to aquatic organisms posed by anionic surfactants such as α-olefin sulfonate (AOS), which are commonly found in industrial and consumer products, including detergents. This study assessed acute (96-h) and subchronic (14-day) responses using antioxidant activity, protein levels, and histopathological changes in Tubifex tubifex exposed to different AOS concentrations (10% of the LC50, 20% of the LC50, and a control). Molecular docking was used to investigate the potential interactions between the key stress biomarker enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and cytochrome c oxidase) of Tubifex tubifex. Acute AOS exposure showed a concentration-dependent decrease in survival, and the general unified threshold (GUTS) model revealed that survivorship is linked to individual response patterns rather than random (stochastic) fluctuations. The GUTS model also revealed dose-dependent toxicity patterns in Tubifex tubifex exposed to α-olefin sulfonate (AOS), with adaptive mechanisms at lower concentrations but significant increases in mortality beyond a certain threshold, emphasizing the role of the AOS concentration in shaping its toxicological impact. Exposure to AOS disrupted antioxidant activity, inducing oxidative stress, with GST and GPx showing positive associations with surfactant concentration and increased lipid peroxidation (elevated MDA levels); moreover, AOS exposure decreased protein concentration, signifying disturbances in vital cellular processes. Histopathological examinations revealed various tissue-level alterations, including cellular vacuolation, cytoplasmic swelling, inflammation, necrosis, and apoptosis. Molecular docking analysis demonstrated interactions between AOS and enzymes (-catalase, superoxide dismutase, and cytochrome c oxidase) in Tubifex tubifex, including hydrophobic and hydrogen bond interactions, with the potential to disrupt enzyme structures and activities, leading to cellular process disruptions, oxidative stress, and tissue damage. According to the species sensitivity distribution (SSD), the difference in toxicity between Tilapia melanopleura (higher sensitivity) and Daphnia magna (low sensitivity) to AOS suggests distinct toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic mechanisms attributable to more complex physiology in Tilapia and efficient detoxification in Daphnia due to its smaller size.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are amphiphilic biomolecules with promising tensoative and emulsifying properties that find application in the most varied industrial sectors: environment, food, agriculture, petroleum, cosmetics, and hygiene. In the current work, a 23 full-factorial design was performed to evaluate the effect and interactions of pineapple peel and corncob as substrates for biosurfactant production by Bacillus subtilis LMA-ICF-PC 001. In a previous stage, an alkaline pretreatment was applied to corncob samples to extract the xylose-rich hydrolysate. The results indicated that pineapple peel extract and xylose-rich hydrolysate acted as partial glucose substitutes, minimizing production costs with exogenous substrates. Biosurfactant I (obtained at 8.11% pineapple peel extract, 8.11% xylose-rich hydrolysate from corncob, and 2.8109 g/L glucose) exhibited a significant surface tension reduction (52.37%) and a promising bioremediation potential (87.36%). On the other hand, biosurfactant III (obtained at 8.11% pineapple peel extract, 31.89% xylose-rich hydrolysate from corncob, and 2.8109 g/L glucose) exhibited the maximum emulsification index in engine oil (69.60%), the lowest critical micellar concentration (68 mg/L), and the highest biosurfactant production (5.59 g/L). These findings demonstrated that using pineapple peel extract and xylose-rich hydrolysate from corncob effectively supports biosurfactant synthesis by B. subtilis, reinforcing how agro-industrial wastes can substitute traditional carbon sources, contributing to cost reduction and environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Antibacterial resistance is one of the most important global threats to human health. Several studies have been performed to overcome this problem and infection-preventive approaches appear as promising solutions. Novel antimicrobial preventive molecules are needed and microbial biosurfactants have been explored in that scope. Considering their structure, these biomolecules can be divided into different classes, glycolipids and lipopeptides being the most studied. Besides their antimicrobial activity, biosurfactants have the advantage of being biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic, which favor their application in several areas, including the health sector. Often, the most difficult infections to fight are associated with biofilm formation, particularly in medical devices. Strategies to overcome micro-organism attachment are thus emergent, and it is possible to take advantage of the antimicrobial/antibiofilm properties of biosurfactants to produce surfaces that are more resistant to the deposition/attachment of bacteria. Approaches such as the covalent bond of biosurfactants to the medical device surface leading to repulsive physical-chemical interactions or contact killing can be selected. Simpler strategies such as the absorption of biosurfactants on surfaces are also possible, eliminating micro-organisms in the vicinity. This review will focus on the physical and chemical characteristics of biosurfactants, their antimicrobial activity, antimicrobial/antibiofilm approaches, and finally on their structure-activity relationship.

Abstract
The natural environment is often contaminated with hydrophobic pollutants such as long-chain hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, oil spills, pesticides, and heavy metals. Hydrophobic pollutants with a toxic nature, slow degradation rates, and low solubility pose serious threats to the environment and human health. Decontamination based on conventional chemical surfactants has been found to be toxic, thereby limiting its application in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In contrast, biosurfactants synthesized by various microbial species have been considered superior to chemical counterparts due to their non-toxic and economical nature. Some biosurfactants can withstand a wide range of fluctuations in temperature and pH. Recently, biosurfactants have emerged as innovative biomolecules not only for solubilization but also for the biodegradation of environmental pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, and oil spills. Biosurfactants have been well documented to function as emulsifiers, dispersion stabilizers, and wetting agents. The amphiphilic nature of biosurfactants has the potential to enhance the solubility of hydrophobic pollutants such as petroleum hydrocarbons and oil spills by reducing interfacial surface tension after distribution in two immiscible surfaces. However, the remediation of contaminants using biosurfactants is affected considerably by temperature, pH, media composition, stirring rate, and microorganisms selected for biosurfactant production. The present review has briefly discussed the current advancements in microbially synthesized biosurfactants, factors affecting production, and their application in the remediation of environmental contaminants of a hydrophobic nature. In addition, the latest aspect of the circular bioeconomy is discussed in terms of generating biosurfactants from waste and the global economic aspects of biosurfactant production.

Abstract
Pesticide pollution remains a significant environmental challenge, necessitating the exploration of sustainable alternatives. Biosurfactants are a class of unconventional surface-active chemicals that are produced by microorganisms. Biosurfactants have many applications in treating oil spills, emulsifiers, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. Compared to chemical surfactants, they have benefits such as biodegradability, less toxicity, and a greener option because they are derived from microbes. Biosurfactants have recently been shown to have the potential to speed up pesticide cleanup. Biosurfactants are used in pesticide remediation because of their exceptional foaming ability, high selectivity, and wide range of pH, salinity, and temperature operating windows. Microbial biosurfactants emerged as potential agents for the treatment of organic waste and agricultural residue. This review unfolds the promising realm of microbial biosurfactants as green solutions for environmental sustainability, particularly in agricultural practices, with special reference to pesticide remediation. This article highlights the escalating need for eco-friendly alternatives, paving the way for discussing biosurfactants. Moreover, the articles discuss in detail various advancements in the field of rapid screening of biosurfactants, either using a conventional approach or via advanced instruments such as GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, etc. Furthermore, the article unveils the molecular mechanisms and the microbial genes driving biosurfactant synthesis, offering insights into enhancing production efficiency. Moreover, the article explores diverse applications of microbial biosurfactants in sustainable agriculture, ranging from soil remediation to crop protection. Abstract
The growing biotechnology industry has focused a lot of attention on biosurfactants because of several advantages over synthetic surfactants. These benefits include worldwide public health, environmental sustainability, and the increasing demand from sectors for environmentally friendly products. Replacement with biosurfactants can reduce upto 8% lifetime CO2 emissions avoiding about 1.5 million tons of greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere. Therefore, the demand for biosurfactants has risen sharply occupying about 10% (∼10 million tons/year) of the world production of surfactants. Biosurfactants' distinct amphipathic structure, which is made up of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, enables these molecules to perform essential functions in emulsification, foam formation, detergency, and oil dispersion-all of which are highly valued characteristic in a variety of sectors. Today, a variety of biosurfactants are manufactured on a commercial scale for use in the food, petroleum, and agricultural industries, as well as the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. We provide a thorough analysis of the body of knowledge on microbial biosurfactants that has been gained over time in this research. We also discuss the benefits and obstacles that need to be overcome for the effective development and use of biosurfactants, as well as their present and future industrial uses.

Abstract
Cellulose and lignin, sourced from biomass, hold potential for innovative bioprocesses and biomaterials. However, traditional fractionation and purification methods often rely on harmful chemicals and high temperatures, making these processes both hazardous and costly. This study introduces a sustainable approach for fractionating acacia wood, focusing on both cellulose and lignin extraction using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of choline chloride (ChCl) and levulinic acid (LA). A design of experiment was employed for the optimization of the most relevant fractionation parameters: time and temperature. In the case of the lignin, both parameters were found to be significant variables in the fractionation process (p-values of 0.0128 and 0.0319 for time and temperature, respectively), with a positive influence. Likewise, in the cellulose case, time and temperature also demonstrated a positive effect, with p-values of 0.0103 and 0.028, respectively. An optimization study was finally conducted to determine the maximum fractionation yield of lignin and cellulose. The optimized conditions were found to be 15% (w/v) of the wood sample in 1:3 ChCl:LA under a treatment temperature of 160 °C for 8 h. The developed method was validated through repeatability and intermediate precision studies, which yielded a coefficient of variation lower than 5%. The recovery and reuse of DES were successfully evaluated, revealing remarkable fractionation yields even after five cycles. This work demonstrates the feasibility of selectively extracting lignin and cellulose from woody biomass using a sustainable solvent, thus paving the way for valorization of invasive species biomass.

Abstract
The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactant molecules is an essential property for surfactant applications in the industry. Recently, classical quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) and graph neural networks (GNNs), a deep learning technique, have been successfully applied to predict the CMC of surfactants at room temperature. However, these models have not yet considered the temperature dependence of the CMC, which is highly relevant to practical applications. We herein develop a GNN model for the temperature-dependent CMC prediction of surfactants. We collected about 1400 data points from public sources for all surfactant classes, i.e., ionic, nonionic, and zwitterionic, at multiple temperatures. We test the predictive quality of the model for the following scenarios: (i) when CMC data for surfactants are present in the training of the model in at least one different temperature and (ii) CMC data for surfactants are not present in the training, i.e., generalizing to unseen surfactants. In both test scenarios, our model exhibits a high predictive performance of R2 ≥ 0.95 on test data. We also find that the model performance varies with the surfactant class. Finally, we evaluate the model for sugar-based surfactants with complex molecular structures, as these represent a more sustainable alternative to synthetic surfactants and are therefore of great interest for future applications in the personal and home care industries.

Abstract
Biochemicals are widely used in the medicine and food industries and are more efficient and safer than synthetic chemicals. The amphipathic surfactants can interact with the microorganisms and embed the extracellular metabolites, which induce microbial metabolites secretion and biosynthesis, performing an attractive prospect of promoting the biochemical production. However, the commonness and differences of surfactant-mediated bio-manufacture in various fields are largely unexplored. Accordingly, this review comprehensively summarized the properties of surfactants, different application scenarios of surfactant-meditated bio-manufacture, and the mechanism of surfactants increasing metabolites production. Various biochemical productions such as pigments, amino acids, and alcohols could be enhanced using the cloud point and the micelles of surfactants. Besides, the amphiphilicity of surfactants also promoted the utilization of fermentation substrates, especially lignocellulose and waste sludge, by microorganisms, indirectly increasing the metabolites production. The increase in target metabolites production was attributed to the surfactants changing the permeability and composition of the cell membrane, hence improving the secretion ability of microorganisms. Moreover, surfactants could regulate the energy metabolism, the redox state and metabolic flow in microorganisms, which induced target metabolites synthesis. This review aimed to broaden the application fields of surfactants and provide novel insights into the production of microbial biochemicals.

Abstract
Detergent chemistry enables applications in the world today while harming safe operating spaces that humanity needs for survival. Aim of this review is to support a holistic thought process in the design of detergent chemistry. We harness the planetary boundary concept as a framework for literature survey to identify progresses and knowledge gaps in context with detergent chemistry and five planetary boundaries that are currently transgressed, i.e., climate, freshwater, land system, novel entities, biosphere integrity. Our survey unveils the status of three critical challenges to be addressed in the years to come, including (i) the implementation of a holistically, climate-friendly detergent industry; (ii) the alignment of materialistic and social aspects in creating technical solutions by means of sustainable chemistry; (iii) the development of detergents that serve the purpose of applications but do not harm the biosphere in their role as novel entities. Specifically, medically relevant case reports revealed that even the most sophisticated detergent design cannot sufficiently accelerate drug discovery to outperform the antibiotic resistance development that detergents simultaneously promote as novel entities. Safe operating spaces that humanity needs for its survival may be secured by directing future efforts beyond sustainable chemistry, resource efficiency, and net zero emission targets.

Abstract
Surfactants, also known as surface-active agents, have emerged as an important class of compounds with a wide range of applications. However, the use of chemical-derived surfactants must be restricted due to their potential adverse impact on the ecosystem and the health of human and other living organisms. In the past few years, there has been a growing inclination towards natural-derived alternatives, particularly microbial surfactants, as substitutes for synthetic or chemical-based counterparts. Microbial biosurfactants are abundantly found in bacterial species, predominantly Bacillus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. The chemical structures of biosurfactants involve the complexation of lipids with carbohydrates (glycolipoproteins and glycolipids), peptides (lipopeptides), and phosphates (phospholipids). Lipopeptides, in particular, have been the subject of extensive research due to their versatile properties, including emulsifying, antimicrobial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. This review provides an update on research progress in the classification of surfactants. Furthermore, it explores various bacterial biosurfactants and their functionalities, along with their advantages over synthetic surfactants. Finally, the potential applications of these biosurfactants in many industries and insights into future research directions are discussed.

Abstract
Detergents are highly produced pollutants with environmental problems like foam generation and toxic effects in biota. Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are efficient, economical, and versatile surfactants, used in detergents for more than 40 years due to their detergency capacity. In the environment, NPE biodegrades into the metabolite nonylphenol (NP), classified as an endocrine disruptor. The identification and quantification of 4-NP in a designed detergent and 30 commercially available detergents were performed to prove the degradation of NPE into 4-NP during storage time. This investigation introduces the first evidence of NPE degradation during storage in commercially available detergents, demonstrating a novel exposure pathway in humans that has not been explored before, representing potential human health risks. Therefore, simple, easy, low-cost, and available approaches to remove and substitute NP is paramount. Alkyl polyglucoside (APG) was assessed as a substitute, and the feasibility of this substitution was proven according to physical and chemical properties, cleaning performance, and antimicrobial properties. NPE substitution in detergents is demonstrated as a viable strategy to minimize exposure risks in humans and the environment.

Abstract
This study describes the synthesis of a new class of surfactants that is based on the bioderived building blocks fructose, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), and hydroxy propionitrile (cyanoethanol, 3-HP). The synthesis is scalable, is carried out at ambient conditions, and does not require chromatography. The produced surfactants have excellent surfactant properties with critical micelle concentrations and Krafft points comparable to current glucose-based surfactants.

Abstract
Glycolipids such as sugar alcohol esters have been demonstrated to be relevant for numerous applications across various domains of specialty. The use of organic solvents and, more recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to mediate lipase-supported bioconversions is gaining potential for industrial application. However, many challenges and limitations remain such as extensive time of production and relatively low productivities among others, which must be solved to strengthen such a biocatalytic process in industry. In this context, this study focuses on the intensification of sorbityl laurate production, as a model biocatalyzed reaction using Novozym 435, investigating the relevance of temperature, heating method, and solvent system. By increasing the reaction temperature from 50 to 90 °C, the space-time yield and product yield were considerably enhanced for reactions in DES and the organic solvent 2M2B, irrespective of the heating method (conventional or microwave heating). However, positive effects in 2M2B were more pronounced with conventional heating as 98% conversion yield was reached within 90 min at 90 °C, equating thus to a nearly 4-fold increase in performance yielding 118.0 ± 3.6 g/(L·h) productivity. With DES, the overall yield and space-time yield were lower with both heating methods. However, microwave heating enabled a 2-fold increase in both performance parameters when the reaction temperature was increased from 50 to 90 °C. Compared to conventional heating, a 7-fold increase in space-time yield at 50 °C and a 16-fold increase at 90 °C were achieved in DES by microwave heating. Furthermore, microwave irradiation enabled the usage of a neat, solvent-free system, representing an initial proof of concept with productivities of up to 13.3 ± 2.3 g/(L·h).

Abstract
Biosurfactants have been profiled as a sustainable replacement for chemical-based surfactants since these bio-based molecules have higher biodegradability. Few research papers have focused on assessing biosurfactant production to elucidate potential bottlenecks. This research aims to assess the techno-economic and environmental performance of surfactin production in a potential scale of 65m3, considering different product yields and involving the European energy crisis of 2021-2022. The conceptual design, simulation, techno-economic, and environmental assessments were done by applying process engineering concepts and software tools such as Aspen Plus v.9.0 and SimaPro v.8.3.3. The results demonstrated the high economic potential of surfactin production since the higher values in the market offset the low fermentation yields, low recovery efficiency, and high capital investment. The sensitivity analysis of the economic assessment elucidated a minimum surfactin selling price between 29 and 31 USD/kg of surfactin, while a minimum processing scale for economic feasibility between 4 and 5 kg/h is needed to reach an equilibrium point. The environmental performance must be improved since the carbon footprint was 43 kg CO2eq/kg of surfactin. The downstream processing and energy demand are the main bottlenecks since these aspects contribute to 63 and 25% of the total emissions. The fermentation process and downstream process are key factors for future optimization and research.

Abstract
This study aimed to enhance carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based films by incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and cress seed mucilage (CSM), with a view to augmenting the physical, mechanical, and permeability properties of the resulting nanocomposite films. For the first time, CSM was exploited as a green surfactant to synthetize ZnO NPs using hydrothermal method. Seven distinct film samples were meticulously produced and subjected to a comprehensive array of analyses. The findings revealed that the incorporation of CSM/ZnO-5 % improved the physical properties of the films, demonstrating a significant reduction in moisture content and water vapor permeability (WVP). Increasing the concentration of NPs in conjunction with CSM markedly decreased the solubility of the nanocomposites by up to 56 %. The films containing CSM/ZnO showed higher tensile strength and elongation at the break values. The UV absorption of the films exhibited a substantial rise with the addition of ZnO NPs, particularly with an increased content in the presence of CSM. The thermal stability of nanocomposites containing a high concentration of CSM/ZnO exhibited an improvement compared to the control sample. In light of these results, the CMC/CSM/ZnO-5 % film emerges as a promising candidate for a biocompatible packaging material, exhibiting favorable physical characteristics.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are natural compounds with remarkable surface-active properties that may offer an eco-friendly alternative to conventional surfactants. Among them, mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) stand out as an intriguing example of a glycolipid biosurfactant. MELs have been used in a variety of sectors for various applications, and are currently commercially produced. Industrially, they are used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and agricultural industries, based on their ability to reduce surface tension and enhance emulsification. However, despite their utility, their production is comparatively limited industrially. From a bioprocessing standpoint, two areas of interest to improve the production process are upstream production and downstream (separation and purification) product recovery. The former has seen a significant amount of research, with researchers investigating several production factors: the microbial species or strain employed, the producing media composition, and the production strategy implemented. Improvement and optimization of these are key to scale-up the production of MELs. On the other hand, the latter has seen comparatively limited work presented in the literature. For the most part traditional separation techniques have been employed. This systematic review presents the production and purification methodologies used by researchers by comprehensively analyzing the current state-of-the-art with regards the production, separation, and purification of MELs. By doing so, the review presents different possible approaches, and highlights some potential areas for future work by identifying opportunities for the commercialization of MELs.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are eco-friendly compounds with unique properties and promising potential as sustainable alternatives to chemical surfactants. The current review explores the multifaceted nature of biosurfactant production and applications, highlighting key fermentative parameters and microorganisms able to convert carbon-containing sources into biosurfactants. A spotlight is given on biosurfactants' obstacles in the global market, focusing on production costs and the challenges of large-scale synthesis. Innovative approaches to valorizing agro-industrial waste were discussed, documenting the utilization of lignocellulosic waste, food waste, oily waste, and agro-industrial wastewater in the segment. This strategy strongly contributes to large-scale, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly biosurfactant production, while the recent advances in waste valorization pave the way for a sustainable society.

Abstract
The removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air is of utmost importance to safeguard both environmental quality and human well-being. However, the low aqueous solubility of hydrophobic VOCs results in poor removal in waste gas biofilters (BFs). In this study, we evaluated the addition of (bio)surfactants in three BFs (BF1 and BF2 mixture of compost and wood chips (C + WC), and BF3 filled with expanded perlite) to enhance the removal of cyclohexane and hexane from a polluted gas stream. Experiments were carried out to select two (bio)surfactants (i.e., Tween 80 and saponin) out of five (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Tween 80, surfactin, rhamnolipid and saponin) from a physical-chemical (i.e., decreasing VOC gas-liquid partitioning) and biological (i.e., the ability of the microbial consortium to grow on the (bio)surfactants) point of view. The results show that adding Tween 80 at 1 critical micelle concentration (CMC) had a slight positive effect on the removal of both VOCs, in BF1 (e.g., 7.0 ± 0.6 g cyclohexane m-3 h-1, 85 ± 2% at 163 s; compared to 6.7 ± 0.4 g cyclohexane m-3 h-1, 76 ± 2% at 163 s and 0 CMC) and BF2 (e.g., 4.3 ± 0.4 g hexane m-3 h-1, 27 ± 2% at 82 s; compared to 3.1 ± 0.7 g hexane m-3 h-1, 16 ± 4% at 82 s and 0 CMC), but a negative effect in BF3 at either 1, 3 and 9 CMC (e.g., 2.4 ± 0.4 g hexane m-3 h-1, 30 ± 4% at 163 s and 1 CMC; compared to 4.6 ± 1.0 g hexane m-3 h-1, 43 ± 8% at 163 s and 0 CMC). In contrast, the performance of all BFs improved with the addition of saponin, particularly at 3 CMC. Notably, in BF3, the elimination capacity (EC) and removal efficiency (RE) doubled for both VOCs (i.e., 9.1 ± 0.6 g cyclohexane m-3 h-1, 49 ± 3%; 4.3 ± 0.3 g hexane m-3 h-1, 25 ± 3%) compared to no biosurfactant addition (i.e., 4.5 ± 0.4 g cyclohexane m-3 h-1, 23 ± 3%; hexane 2.2 ± 0.5 g m-3 h-1, 10 ± 2%) at 82 s. Moreover, the addition of the (bio)surfactants led to a shift in the microbial consortia, with a different response in BF1-BF2 compared to BF3. This study evaluates for the first time the use of saponin in BFs, it demonstrates that cyclohexane and hexane RE can be improved by (bio)surfactant addition, and it provides recommendations for future studies in this field.

Abstract
Wastewater generated within agricultural sectors such as dairies, piggeries, poultry farms, and cattle meat processing plants is expected to reach 600 million m3 yr-1 globally. Currently, the wastewater produced by these industries are primarily treated by aerobic and anaerobic methods. However, the treated effluent maintains a significant concentration of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. On the other hand, the valorisation of conventional microalgae biomass into bioproducts with high market value still requires expensive processing pathways such as dewatering and extraction. Consequently, cultivating microalgae using agricultural effluents shows the potential as a future technology for producing value-added products and treated water with low nutrient content. This review explores the feasibility of growing microalgae on agricultural effluents and their ability to remove nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus. In addition to evaluating the market size and value of products from wastewater-grown microalgae, we also analysed their biochemical characteristics including protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and pigment content. Furthermore, we assessed the costs of both upstream and downstream processing of biomass to gain a comprehensive understanding of the economic potential of the process. The findings from this study are expected to facilitate further techno-economic and feasibility assessments by providing insights into optimized processing pathways and ultimately leading to the reduction of costs.

Biosurfactants have garnered increased attention lately due to their superiority of their properties over fossil-derived counterparts. While the cost of production remains a significant hurdle to surpass synthetic surfactants, biosurfactants have been anticipated to gain a larger market share in the coming decades. Among these, glycolipids, a type of low-molecular-weight biosurfactant, stand out for their efficacy in reducing surface and interfacial tension, which made them highly sought-after for various surfactant-related applications. Glycolipids are composed of hydrophilic carbohydrate moieties linked to hydrophobic fatty acid chains through ester bonds that mainly include rhamnolipids, trehalose lipids, sophorolipids, and mannosylerythritol lipids. This review highlights the current landscape of glycolipids and covers specific glycolipid productivity and the diverse range of products found in the global market. Applications such as bioremediation, food processing, petroleum refining, biomedical uses, and increasing agriculture output have been discussed. Additionally, the latest advancements in production cost reduction for glycolipid and the challenges of utilizing second-generation feedstocks for sustainable production are also thoroughly examined. Overall, this review proposes a balance between environmental advantages, economic viability, and societal benefits through the optimized integration of secondary feedstocks in biosurfactant production.

Abstract
Phycocyanin (PC), a natural protein that is very interesting from the medical point of view due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is obtained from algae. This compound is gaining positions for applications in the food industry. The main objective of this work was to obtain nanoemulgels formulated with PC and k-carrageenan (a polymer that is obtained from algae as well). An optimization of the processing parameters (homogenization pressure and number of cycles) and the ratio of PC and a well-known synthetic surfactant (Tween 80) was developed using response surface methodology. The results of this optimization were 25,000 psi, seven cycles, and a 1:1 ratio of PC/Tween80. However, the necessity for the incorporation of a polymer that plays a thickener role was observed. Hence, k-carrageenan (k-C) was used to retard the creaming process that these nanoemulsions suffered. The incorporation of this biopolymer provoked the creation of a network that showed gel-type behavior and flow indexes very close to zero. Thanks to the combined use of these two sustainable and algae-obtained compounds, stable nanoemulgels were obtained. This work has proved that the combined use of PC and k-C has emerged as a sustainable alternative to stabilize dispersed systems for the food industry.

Abstract
Pickering emulsion (PE) technology effectively addresses the issues of poor compatibility and low retention of hydrophobic active ingredients in food packaging. Nonetheless, it is important to recognize that each stage of the preparation process for PE films/coatings (PEFCs) can significantly influence their functional properties. With the fundamental considerations of environmental friendliness and human safety, this review extensively explores the potential of raw materials for PEFC and introduces the preparation methods of nanoparticles, emulsification technology, and film-forming techniques. The critical factors that impact the performance of PEFC during the preparation process are analyzed to enhance food preservation effectiveness. Moreover, the latest advancements in PE packaging across diverse food applications are summarized, along with prospects for innovative food packaging materials. Finally, the preservation mechanism and application safety have been systematically elucidated. The study revealed that the PEFCs provide structural flexibility, where designable nanoparticles offer unique functional properties for intelligent control over active ingredient release. The selection of the dispersed and continuous phases, along with component proportions, can be customized for specific food characteristics and storage conditions. By employing suitable preparation and emulsification techniques, the stability of the emulsion can be improved, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the films/coatings in preserving food. Including additional substances broadens the functionality of degradable materials. The PE packaging technology provides a safe and innovative solution for extending the shelf life and enhancing the quality of food products by protecting and releasing active components.

Abstract
The formulation of drugs in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles can be accomplished by various methods, with nanoprecipitation and nanoemulsion being among the most commonly used manufacturing techniques to provide access to high-quality nanomaterials with reproducible quality. Current trends turned to sustainability and green concepts leading to a re-thinking of these techniques, particularly as the conventional solvents for the dissolution of the polymer suffer from limitations like hazards for human health and natural environment. This chapter gives an overview about the different excipients used in classical nanoformulations with a special focus on the currently applied organic solvents. As alternatives, the status quo of green, sustainable, and alternative solvents regarding their application, advantages, and limitations will be highlighted as well as the role of physicochemical solvent characteristics like water miscibility, viscosity, and vapor pressure for the selection of the formulation process, and for particle characteristics. New alternative solvents will be introduced for PLGA nanoparticle formation and compared regarding particle characteristics and biological effects as well as for in situ particle formation in a matrix consisting of nanocellulose. Conclusively, new alternative solvents are available that present a significant advancement toward the replacement of organic solvents in PLGA nanoparticle formulations.

Abstract
In this study, we examined the effect of Schizophyllum commune fermentation broth (SCFB) rich in polysaccharides (SCFP) on the stability and bioaccessibility of β-carotene and curcumin. An SCFB-stabilized oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion (SCFBe) was prepared using SCFB as the continuous phase, and then evaluated for storage stability using an SCFP-based emulsion (SCFPe) as the control. The findings revealed that SCFBe is more stable at 60 °C than SCFPe, and stratification or droplet size varied at differing pH levels (3-9) and concentrations of Na+ (0.1-0.5 M) and Ca2+ (0.01-0.05 M). Since the absolute value of the zeta potential of SCFBe is much lower at 60 °C than that at 4 °C and 25 °C, a higher temperature (60 °C) may enhance the reactivity of polysaccharides and proteins in SCFB to improve the stability of SCFBe. Both the protective impact of SCFB on functional food molecules and their capacity to block lipid oxidation increased as polysaccharide content improved. The bioaccessibility of β-carotene after in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion is 11.18 %-12.28 %, whereas that of curcumin is 31.64 %-33.00 %. By fermenting edible and medicinal fungi in liquid, we created a unique and environmentally friendly approach for getting food-grade emulsifiers without extraction.

Abstract
Amino acid-based surfactants are valuable compounds for cosmetic formulations. The chemical synthesis of acyl amino acids is conventionally performed by the Schotten-Baumann reaction using fatty acyl chlorides, but aminoacylases have also been investigated for use in biocatalytic synthesis with free fatty acids. Aminoacylases and their properties are diverse; they belong to different peptidase families and show differences in substrate specificity and biocatalytic potential. Bacterial aminoacylases capable of synthesis have been isolated from Burkholderia, Mycolicibacterium, and Streptomyces. Although several proteases and peptidases from S. griseus have been described, no aminoacylases from this species have been identified yet. In this study, we investigated two novel enzymes produced by S. griseus DSM 40236T . We identified and cloned the respective genes and recombinantly expressed an α-aminoacylase (EC3.5.1.14), designated SgAA, and an ε-lysine acylase (EC3.5.1.17), designated SgELA, in S. lividans TK23. The purified aminoacylase SgAA was biochemically characterized, focusing on its hydrolytic activity to determine temperature- and pH optima and stabilities. The aminoacylase could hydrolyze various acetyl amino acids at the Nα -position with a broad specificity regarding the sidechain. Substrates with longer acyl chains, like lauroyl amino acids, were hydrolyzed to a lesser extent. Purified aminoacylase SgELA specific for the hydrolysis of Nε -acetyl-l-lysine was unstable and lost its enzymatic activity upon storage for a longer period but could initially be characterized. The pH optimum of SgELA was pH 8.0. While synthesis of acyl amino acids was not observed with SgELA, SgAA catalyzed the synthesis of lauroyl-methionine.

Abstract
Herein, we report a method for the synthesis of biobased surfactants derived from sugar beet pulp (SBP) monosaccharides, l-Ara and d-GalA. The surfactants were prepared via one-pot reductive amination, allowing the introduction of different alkyl chain lengths and methyl modifications. Optimal reaction conditions were established to achieve high yields and easy purification. The synthesized surfactants including the tertiary amines exhibited desirable properties, including solubility, foamability, and reduction of surface tension. Notably, the anionic surfactants derived from d-GalA demonstrated better solubility and foam performance compared to those derived from l-Ara. In addition, these surfactants exhibited surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC) comparable to those of the commercial surfactant sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES). Furthermore, the biodegradable surfactant GalA1.8 displayed excellent emulsifying properties and low skin irritation potential. On the l-Ara surfactant with a short chain, Ara1.6 has potential as a hydrotrope. These findings suggest that biobased surfactants derived from SBP monosaccharides have promising applications in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, detergents, and chemicals.

Abstract
The global economic burden of microbial corrosion of metals is enormous. Microbial corrosion of iron-containing metals is most extensive under anaerobic conditions. Microbes form biofilms on metal surfaces and can directly extract electrons derived from the oxidation of Fe0 to Fe2+ to support anaerobic respiration. H2 generated from abiotic Fe0 oxidation also serves as an electron donor for anaerobic respiratory microbes. Microbial metabolites accelerate this abiotic Fe0 oxidation. Traditional strategies for curbing microbial metal corrosion include cathodic protection, scrapping, a diversity of biocides, alloys that form protective layers or release toxic metal ions, and polymer coatings. However, these approaches are typically expensive and/or of limited applicability and not environmentally friendly. Biotechnology may provide more effective and sustainable solutions. Biocides produced with microbes can be less toxic to eukaryotes, expanding the environments for potential application. Microbially produced surfactants can diminish biofilm formation by corrosive microbes, as can quorum-sensing inhibitors. Amendments of phages or predatory bacteria have been successful in attacking corrosive microbes in laboratory studies. Poorly corrosive microbes can form biofilms and/or deposit extracellular polysaccharides and minerals that protect the metal surface from corrosive microbes and their metabolites. Nitrate amendments permit nitrate reducers to outcompete highly corrosive sulphate-reducing microbes, reducing corrosion. Investigation of all these more sustainable corrosion mitigation strategies is in its infancy. More study, especially under environmentally relevant conditions, including diverse microbial communities, is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Small peptides play a crucial role in plant growth and adaptation to the environment. Exogenous small peptides are often applied together with surfactants as foliar fertilizers, but the impact of small peptides and surfactants on the tea phyllosphere microbiome remains unknown. RESULTS In this study, we investigated the effects of small peptides and different surfactants on the tea phyllosphere microbiome using 16S and ITS sequencing. Our results showed that the use of small peptides reduced the bacterial diversity of the tea phyllosphere microbiome and increased the fungal diversity, while the use of surfactants influenced the diversity of bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, the addition of rhamnolipid to small peptides significantly improved the tea phyllosphere microbiome community structure, making beneficial microorganisms such as Pseudomonas, Chryseobacterium, Meyerozyma, and Vishniacozyma dominant populations. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that the combined use of small peptides and surfactants can significantly modify the tea phyllosphere microbiome community structure, particularly for beneficial microorganisms closely related to tea plant health. Thus, this preliminary study offers initial insights that could guide the application of small peptides and surfactants in agricultural production, particularly with respect to their potential for modulating the phyllosphere microbiome community in tea plant management.

Abstract
The residue of Camellia seeds after oil extraction contains many bioactive ingredients, including tea saponin. Tea saponin has many pharmacological effects and is an excellent nonionic surfactant. The development of natural surfactants has become a hot topic in food research. This review gathers the applications of tea saponin as a surfactant in food. It focuses on the application of tea saponin in emulsions, delivery systems, extraction and fermentation, as well as the challenges and development prospects in food applications. Tea saponin shows great potential as a surfactant in food applications, which can replace some synthetic surfactants. The full utilization of tea saponin improves the comprehensive utilization value of Camellia seed residue, contributes to the sustainable development of Camellia industry and avoids resource waste.

Abstract
High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating is a well-established method for the generation of polymeric materials with high porosity (>74%) and degree of interconnectivity. The porosity and pore size can be altered by adjusting parameters during emulsification, which affects the properties of the resulting porous structure. However, there remain challenges for the fabrication of polyHIPEs, including typically small pore sizes (∼20-50 μm) and the use of surfactants, which can limit their use in biological applications. Here, we present the use of gelatin, a natural polymer, during the formation of polyHIPE structures, through the use of two biodegradable polymers, polycaprolactone-methacrylate (PCL-M) and polyglycerol sebacate-methacrylate (PGS-M). When gelatin is used as the internal phase, it is capable of stabilising emulsions without the need for an additional surfactant. Furthermore, by changing the concentration of gelatin within the internal phase, the pore size of the resulting polyHIPE can be tuned. 5% gelatin solution resulted in the largest mean pore size, increasing from 53 μm to 80 μm and 28 μm to 94 µm for PCL-M and PGS-M respectively. In addition, the inclusion of gelatin further increased the mechanical properties of the polyHIPEs and increased the period an emulsion could be stored before polymerisation. Our results demonstrate the potential to use gelatin for the fabrication of surfactant-free polyHIPEs with macroporous structures, with potential applications in tissue engineering, environmental and agricultural industries.

Abstract
Tea plants are highly susceptible to the adverse effects of a high-temperature climate, which can cause reduced yield and quality and even lead to plant death in severe cases. Therefore, reducing the damage caused by high-temperature stress and maintaining the photosynthetic capacity of tea plants is a critical technical challenge. In this study, we investigated the impact of small oligopeptides (small peptides) and surfactants on the high-temperature-stress tolerance of tea plants. Our findings demonstrated that the use of small peptides and surfactants enhances the antioxidant capacity of tea plants and protects their photosynthetic system. They also induce an increase in gibberellin (GA) content and a decrease in jasmonic acid (JA), strigolactone (SL), auxin (IAA), and cytokinin (CTK) content. At the same time, small peptides regulate the metabolic pathways of diterpenoid biosynthesis. Additionally, small peptides and surfactants induce an increase in L-Carnosine and N-Glycyl-L-Leucine content and a decrease in (5-L-Glutamyl)-L-Amino Acid content, and they also regulate the metabolic pathways of Beta-Alanine metabolism, Thiamine metabolism, and Glutathione metabolism. In summary, small peptides and surfactants enhance the ability of tea plants to resist high-temperature stress.

Abstract
The structure-property relationship of rhamnolipids, RLs, well-known microbial bioamphiphiles (biosurfactants), is explored in detail by coupling cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and both ex situ and in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The self-assembly of three RLs with reasoned variation of their molecular structure (RhaC10, RhaC10C10, and RhaRhaC10C10) and a rhamnose-free C10C10 fatty acid is studied in water as a function of pH. It is found that RhaC10 and RhaRhaC10C10 form micelles in a broad pH range and RhaC10C10 undergoes a micelle-to-vesicle transition from basic to acid pH occurring at pH 6.5. Modeling coupled to fitting SAXS data allows a good estimation of the hydrophobic core radius (or length), the hydrophilic shell thickness, the aggregation number, and the surface area per RL. The essentially micellar morphology found for RhaC10 and RhaRhaC10C10 and the micelle-to-vesicle transition found for RhaC10C10 are reasonably well explained by employing the packing parameter (PP) model, provided a good estimation of the surface area per RL. On the contrary, the PP model fails to explain the lamellar phase found for the protonated RhaRhaC10C10 at acidic pH. The lamellar phase can only be explained by values of the surface area per RL being counterintuitively small for a di-rhamnose group and folding of the C10C10 chain. These structural features are only possible for a change in the conformation of the di-rhamnose group between the alkaline and acidic pH.

Abstract
Green dispersants are so-called "green" because they are renewable (from bio-based sources), non-volatile (from ionic liquids), or are from naturally available solvents (vegetable oils). In this review, the effectiveness of different types of green dispersants, namely, protein isolates and hydrolysates from fish and marine wastes, biosurfactants from bacterial and fungal strains, vegetable-based oils such as soybean lecithin and castor oils, as well as green solvents like ionic liquids are reviewed. The challenges and opportunities offered by these green dispersants are also elucidated. The effectiveness of these dispersants varies widely and depends on oil type, dispersant hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and seawater conditions. However, their advantages lie in their relatively low toxicity and desirable physico-chemical properties, which make them potentially ecofriendly and effective dispersants for future oil spill response.

Abstract
Antimicrobial fatty acids derived from natural sources and renewable feedstocks are promising surface-active substances with a wide range of applications. Their ability to target bacterial membrane in multiple mechanisms offers a promising antimicrobial approach for combating bacterial infections and preventing the development of drug-resistant strains, and it provides a sustainable strategy that aligns with growing environmental awareness compared to their synthetic counterparts. However, the interaction and destabilization of bacterial cell membranes by these amphiphilic compounds are not yet fully understood. Here, we investigated the concentration-dependent and time-dependent membrane interaction between long-chain unsaturated fatty acids-linolenic acid (LNA, C18:3), linoleic (LLA, C18:2), and oleic acid (OA, C18:1)-and the supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) using quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation (QCM-D) and fluorescence microscopy. We first determined the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of each compound using a fluorescence spectrophotometer and monitored the membrane interaction in real time following fatty acid treatment, whereby all micellar fatty acids elicited membrane-active behavior primarily above their respective CMC values. Specifically, LNA and LLA, which have higher degrees of unsaturation and CMC values of 160 µM and 60 µM, respectively, caused significant changes in the membrane with net |Δf| shifts of 23.2 ± 0.8 Hz and 21.4 ± 0.6 Hz and ΔD shifts of 5.2 ± 0.5 × 10-6 and 7.4 ± 0.5 × 10-6. On the other hand, OA, with the lowest unsaturation degree and CMC value of 20 µM, produced relatively less membrane change with a net |Δf| shift of 14.6 ± 2.2 Hz and ΔD shift of 8.8 ± 0.2 × 10-6. Both LNA and LLA required higher concentrations than OA to initiate membrane remodeling as their CMC values increased with the degree of unsaturation. Upon incubating with fluorescence-labeled model membranes, the fatty acids induced tubular morphological changes at concentrations above CMC. Taken together, our findings highlight the critical role of self-aggregation properties and the degree of unsaturated bonds in unsaturated long-chain fatty acids upon modulating membrane destabilization, suggesting potential applications in developing sustainable and effective antimicrobial strategies.

Abstract
Kinetic studies and modeling of production parameters are essential for developing economical biosurfactant production processes. This study will provide a perspective on mechanistic reaction pathways to metabolize Waste Engine Oil (WEO). The results will provide relevant information on (i) WEO concentration above which growth inhibition occurs, (ii) chemical changes in WEO during biodegradation, and (iii) understanding of growth kinetics for the strain utilizing complex substrates. Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the kinetics and biodegradation potential of the strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa gi |KP 163922| over a range (0.5-8% (v/v)) of initial WEO concentration for 168 h. The kinetic models, such as Monod, Powell, Edward, Luong, and Haldane, were evaluated by fitting the experimental results in respective model equations. An unprecedented characterization of the substrate before and after degradation is presented, along with biosurfactant characterization. The secretion of biosurfactant during the growth, validated by surface tension reduction (72.07 ± 1.14 to 29.32 ± 1.08 mN/m), facilitated the biodegradation of WEO to less harmful components. The strain showed an increase in maximum specific growth rate (µmax) from 0.0185 to 0.1415 h-1 upto 49.92 mg/L WEO concentration. Maximum WEO degradation was found to be ~ 94% gravimetrically. The Luong model (adj. R2 = 0.97) adapted the experimental data using a non-linear regression method. Biochemical, 1H NMR, and FTIR analysis of the produced biosurfactant revealed a mixture of mono- and di- rhamnolipid. The degradation compounds in WEO were identified using FTIR, 1H NMR, and GC-MS analysis to deduce the mechanism.

Abstract
Cosmetics and personal care items are used worldwide and administered straight to the skin. The hazardous nature of the chemical surfactant utilized in the production of cosmetics has caused alarm on a global scale. Therefore, bacterial biosurfactants (BS) are becoming increasingly popular in industrial product production as a biocompatible, low-toxic alternative surfactant. Chemical surfactants can induce allergic responses and skin irritations; thus, they should be replaced with less harmful substances for skin health. The cosmetic industry seeks novel biological alternatives to replace chemical compounds and improve product qualities. Most of these chemicals have a biological origin and can be obtained from plant, bacterial, fungal, and algal sources. Various biological molecules have intriguing capabilities, such as biosurfactants, vitamins, antioxidants, pigments, enzymes, and peptides. These are safe, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly than chemical options. Plant-based biosurfactants, such as saponins, offer numerous advantages over synthetic surfactants, i.e., biodegradable, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly nature. Saponins are a promising source of natural biosurfactants for various industrial and academic applications. However, microbial glycolipids and lipopeptides have been used in biotechnology and cosmetics due to their multifunctional character, including detergency, emulsifying, foaming, and skin moisturizing capabilities. In addition, some of them have the potential to be used as antibacterial agents. In this review, we like to enlighten the application of microbial biosurfactants for replacing chemical surfactants in existing cosmetic and personal skincare pharmaceutical formulations due to their antibacterial, skin surface moisturizing, and low toxicity characteristics.

Abstract
Surfactants are a group of amphiphilic molecules (i.e., having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains) that are a vital part of nearly every contemporary industrial process such as in agriculture, medicine, personal care, food, and petroleum. In general surfactants can be derived from (i) petroleum-based sources or (ii) microbial/plant origins. Petroleum-based surfactants are obvious results from petroleum products, which lead to petroleum pollution and thus pose severe problems to the environment leading to various ecological damages. Thus, newer techniques have been suggested for deriving surfactant molecules and maintaining environmental sustainability. Biosurfactants are surfactants of microbial or plant origins and offer much added advantages such as high biodegradability, lesser toxicity, ease of raw material availability, and easy applicability. Thus, they are also termed "green surfactants". In this regard, this review focused on the advantages of biosurfactants over the synthetic surfactants produced from petroleum-based products along with their potential applications in different industries. We also provided their market aspects and future directions that can be considered with selections of biosurfactants. This would open up new avenues for surfactant research by overcoming the existing bottlenecks in this field.

Abstract
Leak of fuels and lubricants occurring during exploration, distribution, refining and storage operations is the major cause of environmental pollution due to petroderivatives dispersion. The quick use of a series of physicochemical and biological techniques is needed to drastically reduce the magnitude of damage provoked by these pollutants. Among them, soil washing proved to be an effective alternative to the remediation of hydrocarbon-polluted sites, mainly if combined with surfactant utilization. However, the direct use of surfactants can lead to problems related to the toxicity and dispersion of the resulting by-products, as the majority of marketed surfactants are produced from oil derivatives. In this context, green surfactants appear as a promising alternative to their synthetic counterpart. In the present study, two green surfactants, i.e., a chemically synthesized biobased surfactant and a Starmerella bombicola biosurfactant, were applied in soil decontamination tests using a concrete mixer-type Mobile Soil Remediation System (MSRS). The system was designed and developed with 3D printing based on bench-scale results. A commercial biosurfactant was formulated based on the microbial surfactant, which was compared with the biobased surfactant in various experimental conditions. A set of factorial designs combined with Response Surface Methodology was used to select the optimal conditions for pollutant removal using the prototype. The following variables were tested: Surfactant type, Surfactant volume, Surfactant dilution, Contaminant concentration, Soil type, Soil mass, Washing duration, Tank tilt angle, Mixing speed, and Type of basket. Under the optimized experimental condition, the commercial biosurfactant allowed to remove 92.4% of the motor oil adsorbed in the sand. These results demonstrate the possibility of using natural surfactants and the development of novel mechanical technologies to degrade hydrocarbons with economic earnings for oil industry.
