Mistakes and inconsistencies regarding adsorption of contaminants from aqueous solutions: A critical review

The practical utility of ternary nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide-supported platinum catalysts for room-temperature oxidative removal of formaldehyde from the air

Formaldehyde (FA), a carcinogenic oxygenated volatile organic compound, is present ubiquitously in indoor air. As such, it is generally regarded as a critical target for air quality management. The oxidative removal of FA under dark and room-temperature (RT) conditions is of practical significance. A series of ternary nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide-supported platinum catalysts (Pt/NiCoMnO4) have been synthesized for FA oxidative removal at RT in the dark. Their RT conversion values for 50 ppm FA (XFA) at 5,964 h-1 gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) decrease in the following order: 1 wt% Pt/NiCoMnO4 (100 %) > 0.5 wt% Pt/NiCoMnO4 (25 %) > 0.05 wt% Pt/NiCoMnO4 (14 %) > NiCoMnO4 (6 %). The catalytic performance of 1 wt% Pt/NiCoMnO4 has been examined further under the control of various process variables (e.g., catalyst mass, flow rate, relative humidity, FA concentration, time on stream, and molecular oxygen content). The catalytic oxidation of FA at low temperatures (e.g., RT and 60 °C) is accounted for by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism (single-site competitive-adsorption), while Mars van Krevelen kinetics is prevalent at higher temperatures. In situ diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy reveals that FA oxidation proceeds through a series of reaction intermediates such as DOM, HCOO-, and CO32-. Based on the density functional theory simulations, the unique electronic structures of the nearest surface atoms (platinum and nickel) are suggested to be responsible for the superior catalytic activity of Pt/NiCoMnO4.

Effective fabrication and characterization of eco-friendly nano particles composite for adsorption Cd (II) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solutions using modelling studies

The public health and environment are currently facing significant risks due to the discharge of industrial wastewater, which contains harmful heavy metals and other contaminants. Therefore, there is a pressing need for sustainable and innovative technologies to treat wastewater. The main objective of this research was to develop novel composites known as chitosan, Padina pavonica, Fe(III), and nano MgO incorporated onto pomegranate peel with the specific purpose of removing Cd (II) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solutions. The characterization of these nanocomposites involved the utilization of several analytical methods, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The efficiency of these nanocomposites was evaluated through batch mode experiments, investigating the impact of factors such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, and adsorbent dose on the adsorption of Cu(II) ions. The optimum conditions for the removal of ions were pH = 5 for Cu (II) and 6 for Cd (II), contact time: 120 min, adsorbent dosage: 0.2 g, initial metal ion concentration: 50 mg/L for each metal ion for the present study. The MgO@Pp demonstrated the highest removal efficiencies for Cu(II) and Cd(II) at 98.2% and 96.4%, respectively. In contrast, the CS@Fe-PA achieved removal efficiencies of 97.2% for Cu(II) and 89.2% for Cd(II). The modified MgO@Pp exhibited significantly higher total adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cd(II) at 333.3 and 200 mg/g, respectively, compared to CS@Fe-PA, which had capacities of 250 and 142 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption of Cd (II) and Cu (II) ions by MgO@Pp was found to be a spontaneous process. The R2 values obtained using the Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson models were the highest for the MgO@Pp composite, with values of 0.99, 0.988, 0.987, and 0.994, respectively, for Cu (II) and Cd (II). The pseudo-second-order equation was determined to be the best-fit kinetic model for this process. Reusability experiments confirmed that the adsorbents can be utilized for up to four regeneration cycles. Based on the findings of this study, MgO @ Pp is the most promising alternative and could be instrumental in developing strategies to address existing environmental pollution through adsorption.

The effects of co-existing acridine on adsorption-desorption behavior of carbazole in soils: Co-sorption and mechanism insight

Carbazole (CBZ) and acridine (ACR) are polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) widely found in combined contaminated soils, while investigations on organic-organic interactions have been very limited. In this study, batch experiments were carried out on five soils with different properties, taking CBZ as a representative of PANHs and ACR as a co-existing contaminant. The adsorption isotherms of CBZ (50-1000 μg/L) were nonlinear. Soil organic matter (SOM) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) showed positive correlations with CBZ adsorption-desorption coefficients. The adsorption mechanisms of CBZ involved hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, and cation-π bonding. Different concentrations of ACR had varying effects on CBZ. The adsorption of CBZ was inhibited with 250 μg/L ACR. The cooperative adsorption was observed on three soils with increasing ACR concentration (1000 μg/L) and led to more pronounced nonlinear isotherms. The S-shaped isotherms of ACR indicated that ACR was adsorbed to the soil surface in a perpendicular configuration. New adsorption sites were created allowing for increased CBZ adsorption through π-π interaction with ACR. Therefore, variations in soil properties and potential impacts of co-existing contaminants should be well considered when assessing the combined pollution of site soil. This will contribute to a more accurate estimation of environmental and health risks.

How do polystyrene microplastics affect the adsorption of copper in soil?

Microplastics (MPs) commonly coexist with heavy metals in the soil environment. MPs can influence the activity of heavy metals, and the specific mechanisms need to be further explored. Here, different contents of polystyrene (PS) MPs were added to soil to explore their effects on the adsorption and desorption characteristics of copper (Cu2+) in soil. The adsorption process was mainly chemical adsorption and belonged to a spontaneous, endothermic reaction. The hydrophobicity of MPs slowed down the adsorption and desorption rates. The main adsorption mechanisms included complexation by oxygen-containing functional groups, ion exchange (accounting for 33.97-36.04 % of the total adsorption amounts), and electrostatic interactions. MPs lacked oxygen-containing functional groups and were predominantly engaged in ion exchange and electrostatic interactions. MPs diluted, blocked the soil, and covered the active sites of soil, which reduced adsorption (3.56-16.18 %) and increased desorption (0.90-2.07 %) of Cu2+ in soil samples, thus increasing the activity and mobility of Cu2+. These findings provide new insights into the effects of MPs on the fate and risk of heavy metals in soil. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The existing literature concerning the effects of microplastics on the adsorption of heavy metals in soil is insufficient. Our investigation unveiled that the main adsorption mechanisms of different soil samples included complexation by oxygen-containing functional groups, ion exchange (accounting for 33.97-36.04 % of the total adsorption amounts), and electrostatic interactions. MPs lacked oxygen-containing functional groups and were predominantly engaged in ion exchange and electrostatic interactions. MPs diluted, blocked the soil, and covered the active sites of soil, which reduced adsorption (3.56-16.18 %) and increased desorption (0.90-2.07 %) of Cu2+ in soil samples, thus increasing the activity and mobility of Cu2+.

The effectiveness and feasibility of ball-milled powdered activated carbon (BPAC) for removal of organic pesticides in conventional drinking water treatment process

In the conventional drinking water treatment process (CDWTP), powdered activated carbon (PAC) is commonly used for removing organic pesticides, or other organic contaminants. However, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) in CDWTP is insufficient for fulfilling PAC adsorption equilibrium to realize its full capacity. This study examined the adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermal dynamics, and removal efficiency for six organic pesticides using the ball-milled PAC (BPAC) with varying particle sizes in CDWTP. Based on the experiments with the pesticides of atrazine, diazinon, dimethoate, fenitrothion, isoproturon and thiometon, the results indicated that as the particle size reduced from around 38 μm for the commercial PAC to 1 μm for the BPAC, the adsorption rates for hydrophobic pesticides increased up to twentyfold. Diffusional adsorption from the bulk solution to the external PAC surface is the most likely predominant mechanism. This could allow a sufficient pesticides' adsorption within the limited HRT and to achieve a great depth removal of these toxic compounds. However, the addition of BPAC with a diameter of 1 μm was observed to significantly increase residual particles in treated water after the conventional treatment process. With a further systematic evaluation of both adsorption rate and particle penetration, a particle size of around 6 μm BPAC was considered a practical compromise between the adsorption rate and particle penetration for real application. Results from five surface waters of different water quality indicated that, compared to commercial PAC, application of 6 μm BPAC could achieve up to a 75% reduction in adsorbent dosage while maintaining around the same pesticide removal efficiencies. Additionally, thermodynamic analyses suggest that adsorption of these pesticides could be enthalpically or entropically driven depending on the degree of pesticide hydrophobicity.

Insight into Cu (II) adsorption on pyrochar and hydrochar resultant from Acacia Senegal waste for wastewater decontamination

Acacia Senegal waste (ASW) is remaining biomass following gum Arabic harvesting and has no use mentioned in the literature as of yet. This study aims to convert ASW into valuable biochar via two comparative thermal and hydrothermal techniques, which include pyrochar ASW at 300 °C (PC ASW300) and hydrochar ASW at 180 °C (HC ASW180), respectively, for Cu (II) adsorption from aqueous solutions. SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, and XPS were used to characterize the biochar. Adsorption performance was studied as a function of pH, contact time, and adsorbent concentration. Adsorption kinetics were best fit for a pseudo-second-order model. And thermodynamics studies revealed that Cu (II) on biochar was endothermic, spontaneous, and best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. Pyrochar adsorption capacity (31.93 mg g-1) was seven times that of hydrochar (5.45 mg g-1). ASW treated with phosphorus (PC H3PO4 and HC H3PO4) prior to the carbonization altered the pore structure and surface functional groups as well (O-P-O, P-CH3, and P-OH) of biochar. It was found that treating with phosphorous acid increased adsorption capacity to 141.7 mg g-1 and 22.24 mg g-1 for PC H3PO4 and HC H3PO4, respectively. The surface functional groups of biochar resulted from lignin, alkaloids, and polysaccharides combined with Cu (II) during the adsorption process via surface complexation accompanied by π-electron interaction and Cu (II) reduction. These findings shed light on the ASW biochar potential as a new green cost-effective adsorbent and drew an insightful understanding of Cu (II) adsorption performance and mechanism. It is concluded that ASW-derived biochar is highly effective and a promising alternative for Cu (II) decontamination from wastewater.

Hierarchically Micro- and Mesoporous Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Through Selective Ligand Removal

A new method to engineer hierarchically porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) through selective ligand removal (SeLiRe) is presented. This innovative approach involves crafting mixed-ligand ZIFs (ML-ZIFs) with varying proportions of 2-aminobenzimidazole (NH2-bIm) and 2-methylimidazole (2-mIm), followed by controlled thermal treatments. This process creates a dual-pore system, incorporating both micropores and additional mesopores, suggesting selective cleavage of metal-ligand coordination bonds. Achieving this delicate balance requires adjustment of heating conditions for each mixed-ligand ratio, enabling the targeted removal of NH2-bIm from a variety of ML-ZIFs while preserving their inherent microporous framework. Furthermore, the distribution of the initial thermolabile ligand plays a pivotal role in determining the resulting mesopore architecture. The efficacy of this methodology is aptly demonstrated through the assessment of hierarchically porous ZIFs for their potential in adsorbing diverse organic dyes in aqueous environments. Particularly striking is the performance of the 10%NH2-ZIF-2 h, which showcases an astonishing 40-fold increase in methylene blue adsorption capacity compared to ZIF-8, attributed to larger pore volumes that accelerate the diffusion of dye molecules to adsorption sites. This versatile technique opens new avenues for designing micro/mesoporous ZIFs, particularly suited for liquid media scenarios necessitating efficient active site access and optimal diffusion kinetics, such as purification, catalysis, and sensing.

Reuse of iron ore tailings as an efficient adsorbent to remove dyes from aqueous solution

In this work, an iron ore tailings sample (IOT), collected from a tailings dam in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was characterized. The IOT presented point of zero charge of ∼ 6, specific surface area of 4 m2 g-1, and was mainly composed of hematite and quartz. Subsequently, experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption of an anionic dye, Direct Red 80 (DR80), and a cationic dye, Methylene Blue (MB), by the IOT, studying the effects of its dose (doseIOT) and the solution initial pH (pH0). The DR80 removal increased with the decrease of the pH0 while the opposite effect occurred in the experiments with the MB, suggesting the process is governed by the adsorption resulting from electrostatic forces. The increase in the doseIOT increased the DR80 and MB removal, which can be attributed to the greater availability of adsorption sites. Pseudo-second order kinetic (R2 > 0.9994) and the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm (R2 > 0.9842) models described well the DR80 adsorption by the IOT, being the reaction rate and maximum adsorption capacity higher at lower pH0. In a regeneration experiment, it was possible to desorb almost entirely the DR80 using a NaOH solution. Additionally, the regenerated IOT was able to adsorb the DR80, demonstrating its reusability. In a preliminary assay, the IOT decreased the colour of the textile wastewater sample at pH0 3. Therefore, the results indicate the potential use of IOT for removing electric-charged pollutants by adsorption, especially anionic ones under acidic conditions.

Novel manganese and nitrogen co-doped biochar based on sodium bicarbonate activation for efficient removal of bisphenol A: Mechanism insight and role analysis of manganese and nitrogen by combination of characterizations, experiments and density functional theory calculations

A novel porous manganese and nitrogen co-doped biochar (Mn-N@SBC) was synthesized via one-step pyrolysis, utilizing loofah agricultural waste as the precursor and NaHCO3 as the activator. The behavior of bisphenol A adsorbed on Mn-N@SBC was evaluated using static batch adsorption experiments. Compared to direct manganese-nitrogen co-doping, co-doping based on NaHCO3 activation significantly increased the specific surface area (231 to 1027 m2·g-1) and adsorption capacity (15 to 351 mg·g-1). Wide pH (2-10) and good resistance to cation/anion, humic acid and actual water demonstrated the robust adaptability of Mn-N@SBC to environmental factors. The significantly reduced specific surface area after adsorption, adverse effects of ethanol and phenanthrene on the removal of bisphenol A, and theoretically predicted interaction sites indicated the primary adsorption mechanisms involved pore filling, hydrophobicity, and π-π-electron-donor-acceptor interaction. This work presented an approach to create high-efficiency adsorbents from agricultural waste, offering theoretical and practical guidance for the removal of pollutants.

Control of phosphorus release from sediment by iron/aluminum co-modified zeolite: efficiency, mechanism, and response of microbial communities in sediment

The efficiency of iron/aluminum co-modified zeolite (FeAl-Z) covering and amendment for controlling the internal loading of phosphorus (P) from sediment to the overlying water (OW) and its controlling mechanism were explored. The response of the composition of sedimentary microbial communities in sediment and their function to the FeAl-Z capping and amendment was also examined. FeAl-Z showed good removal performance for phosphate in aqueous solution. The maximum phosphate adsorption quantity for FeAl-Z at pH 7 attained 11.2 mg P/g. The release of sediment endogenous phosphorus to OW can be successfully restrained by the FeAl-Z covering and amendment, and the suppression ability of FeAl-Z covering was stronger than that of FeAl-Z amendment. Under the capping or amendment condition, FeAl-Z can effectively inactivate the labile phosphorus measured by diffusion gradient in thin film (DGT-LP) in the overlying water and surface sediment. The added FeAl-Z transformed redox-sensitive phosphorus (BD-P) to metal oxide-bound phosphorus (NaOH-IP) and residual phosphorus (Res-P) in sediment, which increased the stability of inorganic phosphorus in the sediment. The passivation of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and DGT-LP in the surface sediment by FeAl-Z significantly contributed to the inhibition of sediment endogenous phosphorus release to OW by the FeAl-Z capping, and the passivation of SRP, DGT-LP and mobile phosphorus in the surface sediment played a pivotal role in the control of sediment internal phosphorus release by the FeAl-Z amendment. The FeAl-Z amendment and capping did not increase the liberation risk of Fe from sediment, and the microorganisms in the sediments under the conditions of FeAl-Z amendment and covering still can perform good ecological functions. Results of this research demonstrate that FeAl-Z capping has high application potential in the control of phosphorus transfer from sediment to OW.

Revealing the interaction forms between Hg(II) and group types (-Cl, -CN, -NH2, -OH, -COOH) in functionalized Poly(pyrrole methane)s for efficient mercury removal

To explore the impact of different functional groups on Hg(II) adsorption, a range of poly(pyrrole methane)s functionalized by -Cl, -CN, -NH2, -OH and -COOH were synthesized and applied to reveal the interaction between different functional groups and mercury ions in water, and the adsorption mechanism was revealed through combined FT-IR, XPS, and DFT calculations. The adsorption performance can be improved to varying degrees by the incorporation of functional groups. Among them, the oxygen-containing functional groups (-OH and -COOH) exhibit stronger affinity for Hg(II) and can increase the adsorption capacity from 180 mg g-1 to more than 1400 mg g-1 at 318 K, with distribution coefficient (Kd) exceeding 105 mL g-1. The variations in the capture and immobilization capabilities of functionalized poly(pyrrole methane)s predominantly stem from the unique interactions between their functional groups and mercury ions. In particular, oxygen-containing -OH and -COOH effectively capture Hg(OH)2 through hydrogen bonding, and further deprotonate to form the -O-Hg-OH and -COO-Hg-OH complexes which are more stable than those obtained from other functionalized groups. Finally, the ecological safety has been fully demonstrated through bactericidal and bacteriostatic experiments to prove the functionalized poly(pyrrole methane)s can be as an environmentally friendly adsorbent for purifying contaminated water.

Adsorption of Co2+ and Cr3+ in Industrial Wastewater by Magnesium Silicate Nanomaterials

In this paper, two flower-like magnesium silicate nanomaterials were prepared. These and another two commercial magnesium silicate materials were characterized using a scanning electron microscope, the N2 adsorption-desorption method, and other methods. The structure-activity relationship between the adsorption performance of these four magnesium silicate materials and their specific surface area, pore size distribution, and pore structure was compared. The results showed that the 3-FMS modified by sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) had the largest specific surface area and pore size, the best adsorption performance, and the largest experimental equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe,exp) for Co2+, reaching 190.01 mg/g, and Cr3+, reaching 208.89 mg/g. The adsorption behavior of the four materials for Co2+ and Cr3+ both fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption model, indicating that chemical monolayer uniform adsorption was the dominant adsorption process. Among them, the theoretical adsorption capacity (qm) of 3-FMS was the highest, reaching 207.62 mg/g for Co2+ and 230.85 mg/g for Cr3+. Through further research, it was found that the four materials mainly removed Co2+ and Cr3+ through electrostatic adsorption, surface metal ions (Mg2+), and acidic groups (-OH and -SO3H) exchanging with ions in solution. The adsorption performance of two self-made flower-like magnesium silicate materials for Co2+ and Cr3+ was superior to that of two commercial magnesium silicates.

Theoretical and Experimental Analysis of Hydroxyl and Epoxy Group Effects on Graphene Oxide Properties

In this study, we analyzed the impact of hydroxyl and epoxy groups on the properties of graphene oxide (GO) for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye from water, addressing the urgent need for effective water purification methods due to industrial pollution. Employing a dual approach, we integrated experimental techniques with theoretical modeling via density functional theory (DFT) to examine the atomic structure of GO and its adsorption capabilities. The methodology encompasses a series of experiments to evaluate the performance of GO in MB dye adsorption under different conditions, including differences in pH, dye concentration, reaction temperature, and contact time, providing a comprehensive view of its effectiveness. Theoretical DFT calculations provide insights into how hydroxyl and epoxy modifications alter the electronic properties of GO, improving adsorption efficiency. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in the dye adsorption capacity of GO, attributed to the interaction between the functional groups and MB molecules. This study not only confirms the potential of GO as a superior adsorbent for water treatment, but also contributes to the optimization of GO-based materials for environmental remediation, highlighting the synergy between experimental observations and theoretical predictions in advances in materials science to improve sustainability.

Enhancing Methylene Blue Removal through Adsorption and Photocatalysis-A Study on the GO/ZnTiO3/TiO2 Composite

This study focuses on synthesizing and characterizing a graphene oxide/ZnTiO3/TiO2 (GO/ZTO/TO) composite to efficiently remove methylene blue (MB) from water, presenting a novel solution to address industrial dye pollution. GO and ZTO/TO were synthesized by the modified Hummers and sol-gel methods, respectively, while GO/ZTO/TO was prepared using a hydrothermal process. The structural and surface properties of the composite were characterized using various analytical techniques confirming the integration of the constituent materials and suitability for dye adsorption. The study revealed that GO/ZTO/TO exhibits an adsorption capacity of 78 mg g-1 for MB, with only a 15% reduction in adsorption efficiency until the fifth reuse cycle. Furthermore, the study suggests optimal adsorption near neutral pH and enhanced performance at elevated temperatures, indicating an endothermic reaction. The adsorption behavior fits the Langmuir isotherm, implying monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces, and follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, highlighting chemical interactions at the surface as the rate-limiting step. The photocatalytic degradation of MB by GO/ZTO/TO follows pseudo-first-order kinetics, with a higher rate constant than that of GO alone, demonstrating the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite. In conclusion, GO/ZTO/TO emerges as a promising and sustainable approach for water purification, through an adsorption process and subsequent photocatalytic degradation.

One-step carbonization/activation synthesis of chitosan-based porous sheet-like carbon and studies of adsorptive removal for Rhodamine B

In this work, new N, O-codoped chitosan-derived carbon adsorbents (CKC-x, x refer to the calcination temperature) were synthesized over a simple process of chitosan-KOH aerogel production and simultaneous carbonization/activation of the aerogel. CKC-700 was characterized by sheet-like morphology (even containing a portion of carbon nano-sheet of 3 nm thickness), high porosity and specific surface area (1702.1 m2/g), and pyridinic/pyrrolic/graphitic N groups. The simultaneous carbonization/activation of chitosan-KOH aerogel prepared by top-down coagulation of chitosan aqueous solution by KOH aqueous solution rendered these beneficial characteristics. CKC-700 exhibited a superior adsorption capacity for Rhodamine B (RhB) to other chitosan-derived carbon adsorbents, and the maximum adsorption capacity for RhB of 594 mg/g was achieved at 55 °C. CKC-700 also possessed reasonable reusability for the removal of RhB, and the removal efficiency was still above 95 % in the fifth cycle. The effects of adsorption temperature and time, adsorbent dose, organic dye concentration, and solution pH on the adsorption capacity of CKC-700 were studied. Moreover, the adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, and the adsorption mechanism of RhB on CKC-700 were discussed. In addition, CKC-700 also showed favorable adsorption performance for methylene blue (441 mg/g), methyl orange (457 mg/g), and congo red (500 mg/g) at around 25 °C.

Influence of Phosphate on Arsenic Adsorption Behavior of Si-Fe-Mg Mixed Hydrous Oxide

The arsenic adsorption performance of silicon (Si), iron (Fe), and magnesium (Mg) mixed hydrous oxide containing a Si: Fe: Mg metal composition ratio of 0.05:0.9:0.05 (SFM05905) was investigated. SFM05905 was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Batch experiments on arsenic adsorption were conducted at various temperatures and concentrations. Adsorption isotherms models were represented by a linearized equations and were insensitive to temperature change. The anion selectivity of SFM05905 at single component was high for arsenite (III), arsenate (V), and phosphate (PO4), indicating that PO4 inhibits arsenic adsorption. The adsorption amount of As (III), As (V), and PO4 were compared using a column packed with granular SFM05905, and an aqueous solution was passed by a combination of several anions that are single, binary, and ternary adsorbate systems. As (III) had the highest adsorption amount; however, As (III) and PO4 were affected by each other under the ternary mixing condition. Although the adsorption amount of As (V) was smaller than that of As (III), it was not affected by other adsorbates in the column experiments. Finally, although the adsorption of both arsenic continued, the adsorbed PO4 gradually desorbed.

Insights into enhanced immobilization of uranyl carbonate from seawater by Fe-doped MXene

Extracting uranium from seawater not only reduces radioactive contamination in seawater but also provides a source of uranium energy. However, due to the low concentration of uranium in seawater and the high salinity of seawater, extraction of uranium from seawater is challenging. In this work, we demonstrated a simple strategy to synthesize Fe-doped MXene (Fe@Ti3C2Tx) via a hydrothermal method and applied for uranium enrichment in seawater. The Fe@Ti3C2Tx exhibited excellent adsorption performance in high salinity environments. The removal capacity of Fe@Ti3C2Tx was determined to be 526.6 mg/g for UO2(CO3)22- at 328 K with quick reaction equilibrium (∼ 30 min). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of UO2(CO3)22- elimination process on Fe@Ti3C2Tx surface revealed it to be a spontaneous and endothermic single-phase elimination process. FT-IR and XPS analyses further indicated that the removal mechanism of UO2(CO3)22- by Fe@Ti3C2Tx was surface complexation. Our study suggests that Fe@Ti3C2Tx can provide a feasible solution for uranium enrichment in seawater.

Effects of Temperature and DC Electric Fields on Perfluorooctanoic Acid Sorption Kinetics to Activated Carbon

Sorption to activated carbon is a common approach to reducing environmental risks of waterborne perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), while effective and flexible approaches to PFOA sorption are needed. Variations in temperature or the use of electrokinetic phenomena (electroosmosis and electromigration) in the presence of external DC electric fields have been shown to alter the contaminant sorption of contaminants. Their role in PFOA sorption, however, remains unclear. Here, we investigated the joint effects of DC electric fields and the temperature on the sorption of PFOA on activated carbon. Temperature-dependent batch and column sorption experiments were performed in the presence and absence of DC fields, and the results were evaluated by using different kinetic sorption models. We found an emerging interplay of DC and temperature on PFOA sorption, which was linked via the liquid viscosity (η) of the electrolyte. For instance, the combined presence of a DC field and low temperature increased the PFOA loading up to 38% in 48 h relative to DC-free controls. We further developed a model that allowed us to predict temperature- and DC field strength-dependent electrokinetic benefits on the drivers of PFOA sorption kinetics (i.e., intraparticle diffusivity and the film mass transfer coefficient). Our insights may give rise to future DC- and temperature-driven applications for PFOA sorption, for instance, in response to fluctuating PFOA concentrations in contaminated water streams.

Treatment of aqueous phase from hydrothermal liquefaction of municipal sludge by adsorption: Comparison of biochar, hydrochar, and granular activated carbon

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is promising for treating waste with high moisture, such as municipal sludge, and producing biocrude (a petroleum-like biofuel). However, a large amount of wastewater byproduct, HTL aqueous, is generated. The presence of hazardous compounds (e.g., phenolic compounds and nitrogenous organics) makes HTL aqueous the biggest bottleneck for full-scale implementation at treatment plants. This study investigated the adsorption of various pollutants, focusing on chemical oxygen demand (COD), in HTL aqueous to granular activated carbon (GAC), biochar, and hydrochar. It assessed the effect of pH, temperature, time, and adsorbent concentration on adsorption efficiency and identified proper adsorbent and process conditions for removing most of the pollutants from HTL aqueous. GAC showed the highest adsorption capacity (184 mg/g) for COD, surpassing biochar (44 mg/g) and hydrochar (42 mg/g). The adsorption of COD to all adsorbents followed pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm, suggesting that the adsorption of HTL aqueous pollutants is a heterogeneous and multilayer process, limited by chemosorption. The adsorption was endothermic, favored by elevated temperatures and neutral pH. This means adsorption is more efficient and economical for treating HTL aqueous that is a hot stream at the large-scale and it saves chemical needs. Lastly, GAC was highly efficient and selective in removing harmful pollutants, such as COD (up to 66%), total phenolic compounds (up to 94%), pyrazines (up to 99%), pyridines (up to 100%), and cyclic ketones (up to 95%) while preserving valuable volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ammonia for subsequent recovery. Removal of potentially inhibitory compounds and preserving VFAs are crucial for carbon recovery in anaerobic biological treatment of HTL aqueous. The results suggested the necessity of optimizing adsorbent dose for maximizing removal of specific group of inhibitory compounds in full-strength HTL aqueous for enhancing downstream biological treatment. Lastly, this study established the groundwork for HTL aqueous adsorption, elucidating its effectiveness and mechanism for pollutant removal.

A novel strategy of tannery sludge disposal - converting into biochar and reusing for Cr(VI) removal from tannery wastewater

Tannery sludge with high chromium content has been identified as hazardous solid waste due to its potential toxic effects. The safety disposal and valorization of the tannery sludge remains a challenge. In this study, the chromium stabilization mechanism was systematically investigated during chromium-rich tannery sludge was converted to biochar and the removal performance of the sludge biochar (SBC) for Cr(VI) from tannery wastewater was also investigated. The results showed that increase in pyrolysis temperature was conductive to the stabilization of Cr and significant reduction of the proportion of Cr(VI) in SBC. It was confirmed that the stabilization of chromium mainly was attributed to the embedding of chromium in the C matrix and the transformation of the chromium-containing substances from the amorphous Cr(OH)3 to the crystalline state, such as (FeMg)Cr2O5. The biochar presented high adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) at low pH and the maximal theoretical adsorption capacity of SBC produced at 800°C can reach 352 mg Cr(VI)/g, the process of which can be well expressed by Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo second order model. The electrostatic effect and reduction reaction were dominantly responsible for the Cr(VI) adsorption by SBC800. Overall, this study provided a novel strategy for the harmless disposal and resource utilization for the solid waste containing chromium in leather industry.

Study on the performance and mechanism of cobaltous ion removal from water by a high-efficiency strontium-doped hydroxyapatite adsorbent

In this study, a high-efficiency strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HAP) adsorbent was synthesized by a sol-gel method for removing cobaltous ions (Co(II)) from water. The effects of adsorbent dose, initial solution pH, initial Co(II) concentration and temperature on the removal performance of Co(II) were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the optimum Sr-HAP dose was 0.30 g/50 mL solution, the Sr-HAP adsorbent could effectively remove Co(II) in a wide pH range of 3-8. Increasing temperature was conducive to the adsorption, and the maximum Co(II) adsorption capacity by Sr-HAP reached 48.467 mg/g at 45 °C. The adsorption of Co(II) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the Co(II) adsorption by Sr-HAP was attributed mainly to chemisorption. The isothermal adsorption results showed that at lower Co(II) equilibrium concentration, the Langmuir model fitted the data better than the Freundlich model but opposite at higher Co(II) equilibrium concentration. Therefore, the adsorption of Co(II) was a process from monolayer adsorption to multilayer adsorption with the increase of the Co(II) equilibrium concentration. The diffusion analysis of Co(II) to Sr-HAP indicated that the internal diffusion and surface adsorption were the rate-controlled steps of Co(II) adsorption. Thermodynamic study demonstrated that the Co(II) adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The mechanism study revealed that in addition to chemisorption, Sr-HAP also removed Co(II) ions from water via ion exchange and surface complexation.

Chitin/calcite composite extracted from shell waste as a low-cost adsorbent for removal of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin: Effects and mechanisms

Recently, water contamination caused by the misuse of antibiotics has become a growing concern. In this study, an economical chitin/calcite composite (CCA) was extracted from crab shell waste, and the effects and mechanisms of its removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution were investigated. The functional groups of chitin and the metal phase of calcite gave CCA the ability to remove antibiotics. Experiments on kinetics, isothermal adsorption, thermodynamics, co-removal, and reusability were conducted to systematically explore the adsorption performances of CCA toward antibiotics. The pseudo-second-order (FSO) and Langmuir models suited the data obtained from experiments best and displayed a good fit for the chemisorption and a certain homogeneity of adsorption sites. At 25 °C, the maximum adsorption capacities (Qmax) toward CIP and TC were 228.86 and 150.76 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of CCA with TC and CIP are pH dependent since pH can affect the surface charge of CCA and the form in which CIP and TC are existing. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) demonstrated that the keto-O and carboxyl groups of CIP and the carbonyl, hydroxyl, and amido groups of TC could be responsible for the binding with the calcite and the functional groups of chitin through surface complexation, cation bridge and hydrogen bonding.

A new insight into the surface adsorption in the solution phase: A modification of the Langmuir isotherm

The Langmuir isotherm, originally developed to study the adsorption of gases, has been modified in this research to investigate the adsorption of solutes in the solution phase. The modification considers the adsorption of solvent molecules and the interactions between adsorbed particles and the species in the solution. Three equations have been obtained to calculate the contribution of these additional effects on the Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of solute adsorption based on the new isotherm. The study evaluated the efficiency of the new isotherm in the adsorption of some metal ions in an aqueous solution and found that it is more accurate than the Langmuir isotherm and provides a deeper insight into the adsorption process in the solution phase. Optimization of simultaneous adsorption of nickel, copper, cadmium and zinc from sulfuric solutions using weakly acidic resins

In this research, the adsorption of nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn) from real sulfuric leaching solution with weakly acidic resins has been studied using response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption process on two weakly acidic resins has been investigated as a function of pH, time, temperature, and resin dosage. The experimental results indicate that the amino phosphoric acid resin removed Ni, Cu, Cd, and Zn from an acidic solution very efficiently. Based on the central composite design (CCD) on the RSM, the statistical criteria of correlation coefficient (R2) values of Ni, Cu, Cd, and Zn are 0.9418, 0.9753, 0.9657, and 0.9189, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the thermodynamic calculations indicated the chemical interaction between the resin surface and the metal ions. Enthalpy values greater than zero indicate that the adsorption reaction of the metals is endothermic. The optimal adsorption process was carried out at time of 20 min, temperature of 30 0C, pH of 5, and resin dosage of 4 g/L. In these conditions, the adsorption capacity of nickel, copper, cadmium, and zinc were obtained 13.408, 7.087, 4.357, and 15.040 mg/g, respectively.

Metformin and lamotrigine sorption on a digestate amended soil in presence of trace metal contamination

The antidiabetic drug metformin and antiepileptic drug lamotrigine are contaminants of emerging concern that have been detected in biowaste-derived amendments and in the environment, and their fate must be carefully studied. This work aimed to evaluate their sorption behaviour on soil upon digestate application. Experiments were conducted on soil and digestate-amended soil as a function of time to study kinetic processes, and at equilibrium also regarding the influence of trace metals (Pb, Ni, Cr, Co, Cu, Zn) at ratio pharmaceutical/metal 1/1, 1/10, and 1/100. Pharmaceutical desorption experiments were also conducted to assess their potential mobility to groundwater. Results revealed that digestate amendment increased metformin and lamotrigine adsorbed amounts by 210% and 240%, respectively, increasing organic matter content. Metformin adsorption kinetics were best described by Langmuir model and those of lamotrigine by Elovich and intraparticle diffusion models. Trace metals did not significantly affect the adsorption of metformin in amended soil while significantly decreased that of lamotrigine by 12-39%, with exception for Cu2+ that increased both pharmaceuticals adsorbed amounts by 5 - 8%. This study highlighted the influence of digestate amendment on pharmaceutical adsorption and fate in soil, which must be considered in the circular economy scenario of waste-to-resource.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Research on environmental aspects of retention/release of pollutants in soils and sorbents. What should be next?

Although studies dealing with adsorption/desorption (and/or retention/release) of pollutants present in environmental compartments is a classical field of research, recent papers are focusing on some weak points of investigations and publications within the area. In addition, an increasing number of works are being published related to new possibilities and alternatives in this kind of research works, many of them in relation to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Considering the existence of eventual controversies, eventual mistakes, and the convenience of suggesting alternatives to go ahead in the future, in this work, after taking into account some relevant publications in the previous literature, a simple workflow is proposed as a kind of protocol to revise successive steps that could guide the direction to follow when programing research dealing with the retention/release of pollutants in soils and sorbent materials.

Powdered silk: A promising biopolymer for the treatment of dye contaminated water

Discharge of textile dye effluents into water bodies is creating stress to aquatic life and contaminating water resources. In this study, a new biopolymer adsorbent silk fibroin (SF) was prepared from Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) and used for removal of Solochrome Black-T (SB-T) from water. This innovative adsorbent exhibits an exceptional adsorption capacity of 20.08 mg/g, achieving a removal efficiency of approximately 98.6 % within 60 min. Notably, the powdered SF adsorbent demonstrates rapid kinetics, surpassing the performance of previously reported similar adsorbents in adsorption capacity and reaction speed. The molecular weight and particle diameter of the material were observed to be > 1.243 kDa and 3 μm, respectively. The experimental investigations were performed on different parameters, viz., adsorbent dosage, contact time, repeatability, and desorption-adsorption study. The experimental data well fit for the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.937, qmax = 20.08 mg/g) and the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.921 and qe = 1.496 mg/g). Compared to the adsorbents reported in the literature, the newly prepared SF showed high adsorption capacity and faster kinetics to address real-life situations. The novelty of this work extends beyond its remarkable adsorption capabilities. The SF adsorbent offers a cost-effective, sustainable solution and regenerable adsorption material with minimal negative environmental impacts. This regenerability, with its versatility and broad applicability, positions powdered SF fibroin as a transformative technology in water treatment and environmental protection.

Unveiling the performance of a novel alkalizing bacterium Enterobacter sp. LYX-2 in immobilization of available Cd

A novel alkalizing strain Enterobacter sp. LYX-2 that could resist 400 mg/L Cd was isolated from Cd-contaminated soil, which immobilized 96.05% Cd2+ from medium. Cd distribution analysis demonstrated that more than half of the Cd2+ was converted into extracellular precipitated Cd through mobilization of the alkali-producing mechanism by the strain LYX-2, achieving the high immobilization efficiency of Cd2+. Biosorption experiments revealed that strain LYX-2 had superior biosorption capacity of 48.28 mg/g for Cd. Pot experiments with Brassica rapa L. were performed with and without strain LYX-2. Compared to control, 15.92% bioavailable Cd was converted to non-bioavailable Cd and Cd content in aboveground vegetables was decreased by 37.10% with addition of strain LYX-2. Available Cd was mainly immobilized through extracellular precipitation, cell-surface biosorption and intracellular accumulation of strain LYX-2, which was investigated through Cd distribution, Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis. In addition, the application of strain LYX-2 significantly promoted the growth of vegetables about 2.4-fold. Above results indicated that highly Cd-resistant alkalizing strain LYX-2, as a novel microbial passivator, had excellent ability and reuse value to achieve the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil coupled with safe production of vegetables simultaneously.

Insights into adsorption performance and mechanism of chitosan-bentonite biocomposites for removal of imazethapyr and imazamox

In the present study, chitosan-bentonite biocomposites were synthesised by ultrasonication, characterized using spectral techniques and assessed for their effectiveness in removing imazethapyr and imazamox from aqueous solution. The response surface methodology based box behnken design was utilized to generate optimum conditions viz. pH (1 to 9), adsorbent dose (0.01 to 1.0 g), contact time (0.5 to 48 h) and temperature (15 to 55 °C) for adsorption of herbicides on biocomposites. Based on model predictions, 60.4 to 91.5 % of imazethapyr and 31.7 to 46.4 % of imazamox was efficiently removed under optimal conditions. Adsorption data exhibited a strong fit to pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2 > 0.987) and Freundlich isotherm (R2 > 0.979). The adsorption capacity ranged from 3.88 to 112 μg1-ng-1mLn and order of adsorption was: low molecular weight chitosan-bentonite> medium molecular weight chitosan-bentonite> high molecular weight chitosan-bentonite> bentonite. Thermodynamic experiments suggested a spontaneous, exothermic process, reducing the system randomness during adsorption. Desorption experiments revealed successful desorption ranging from 91.5 to 97.0 % using 0.1 M NaOH. The adsorption mechanism was dominated by synergistic electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. These results collectively indicated the potential environmental remediation application of chitosan-bentonite biocomposites to adsorb imazethapyr and imazamox from wastewaters.

Resource utilization of wastepaper and bentonite: Cu(II) removal in the aqueous environment

Contamination of heavy metals has always been a pressing concern. The dry-wet alternately treated carboxymethylcellulose bentonite (DW-CB) was successfully prepared by intercalating bentonite (BT) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) obtained by solvent processes using enzymatically digested wastepaper as cellulosic raw material, and the adsorption capacity of Cu2+ on DW-CB in aqueous solution was investigated. A 98.18 ± 2.31 % removal efficiency was achieved by 4 g/L of DW-CB after 8 h in a solution containing 100 mg/L of Cu2+, which were 4.1 times and 1.5 times of that of BT and adsorbent prepared without alternating dry-wet process, respectively. The introduction of -COOH groups during the preparation of DW-CB enhanced the electrostatic interaction between DW-CB and Cu2+, which was the main driving force for Cu2+ removal. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model better described the adsorption process and adsorption capacity of Cu2+ on DW-CB. DW-CB still showed high removal of Cu2+ (19.61 ± 0.99 mg/g) in the presence of multiple metal ions, while exhibiting the potential for removal of Zn2+, Mg2+ and K+, especially Mg2+ (22.69 ± 1.48 mg/g). However, the interactions of organics with Cu2+ severely affected the removal of Cu2+ by DW-CB (removal efficiency: 17.90 ± 4.17 % - 95.33 ± 0.27 %). In this study, an adsorbent with high targeted adsorption of Cu2+ was prepared by utilizing wastepaper and BT, which broadened the way of wastepaper resource utilization and had good economic and social benefits.

Tuning microscopic structure of La-MOFs via ligand engineering effect towards enhancing phosphate adsorption

The selection of different organic ligands when synthesizing metal organic framework (MOFs) can change their effects on the adsorption performance. Here, four La-MOFs adsorbents (La-SA, La-FA, La-TA and La-OA) with different organic ligands and structures were synthesized by solvothermal method for phosphate adsorption, and the relationship between their adsorption properties and structures was established. Among four La-MOFs, their phosphate adsorption capacities and adsorption rates followed La-SA > La-FA > La-TA > La-OA. The results indicated that average pore diameter played a key role in phosphate adsorption and there was a positive correlation between average pore diameter and adsorption capacity (R2 = 0.86). Coexisting ion experiments showed that phosphate adsorptions on three La-MOFs (La-SA, La-FA and La-TA) were inhibited in the presence of CO32- and HCO3-. The inhibition of CO32- was the most pronounced and the results of redundancy analysis pointed out that it was mainly due to the change of pH value. In contrast, La-OA showed enhanced phosphate adsorption in the presence of CO32- and HCO3-, and the combination of pH experiments showed that phosphate adsorption by La-OA was increased under alkaline conditions. Further combined with FT-IR, XRD, high resolution energy spectra of XPS (La 3d, P 2p and O 1s) and XANES, the adsorption mechanisms were derived electrostatic attraction, chemical precipitation and inner sphere complexation, and the last two were identified as the main mechanisms. Moreover, it can be identified from XPS 2p that the phosphate adsorption on La-FA and La-OA were mainly in the LaPO4 state, while La-SA and La-TA mainly existed in the form of LaPO4·xH2O crystals and inner sphere complexes. From the perspective of material morphology, this work provides a thought for the rational design of MOFs with adjustable properties for phosphate adsorption.

Novel phosphate functionalized sodium alginate hydrogel for efficient adsorption and separation of Nd and Dy from Co

The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) including neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) from NdFeB permanent magnets has become one of the main ways to solve the increased demand for rare earth. Herein, n-dodecyl phosphate (DPPA) was used for the first time as the adsorption functional group donor, sodium alginate as the substrate, and calcium chloride solution as the reactive solvent, a hybrid hydrogel adsorbent DPPA/CaALG was synthesized by sol-gel method for application in the adsorption and separation of Nd and Dy from the Co-Nd-Dy ternary system. SEM-EDS, and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis showed the successful preparation of DDPA/CaALG with mesoporous structure. Batch experiments showed the superiority of the hybrid hydrogel for the good selective adsorption of Nd and Dy, such as large adsorption capacity (Nd: 162.5 mg/g, Dy: 183.5 mg/g), and no adsorption for Co. FT-IR, XPS showed that PO and P-O groups are involved in the adsorption process of Nd and Dy as electron acceptors, where the ion exchange of P-OH is dominant. Furthermore, the chemical properties of ligands and complexes were analyzed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and revealed their adsorption behaviors as well as the competition between different metal ions.

Conversion of carbon black recovered from waste tires into activated carbon via chemical/microwave methods for efficient removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater

In this research study, recovered carbon black (rCB) was obtained via pyrolysis of waste tires. The obtained rCB was then converted into activated carbon species through both chemical treatment and microwave coupled with chemical treatment as a two-step activation process. The activated carbon obtained from chemical activation was denoted as C-AC, while that obtained from exposure to microwave followed by chemical activation was labeled as MC-AC. These two structures were consequently introduced as sorbents for the removal of cadmium ions from an aqueous solution. The structural characteristics of the introduced adsorbents were confirmed using various techniques, namely X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Additionally, textual features of these adsorbents were acquired via both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption-desorption BET surface area analyses. These two structures were then introduced for Cd ion adsorption under different operating conditions. Particularly, the effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and metal ion concentration on the efficiency of adsorption was investigated. The 1maximum adsorption capacity was detected at a pH value of 5.0, a contact time of 30 min, a sorbent dose of 0.4 g L-1, and an initial metal concentration of 50 mg L-1 using MC-AC, which exhibited nearly double the sorption capacity detected for C-AC. Kinetic studies indicated that the process of Cd(ii) adsorption is perfectly described and fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. However, adsorption isotherms for the two adsorbents were found to match the Langmuir model, referring to the occurrence of uniform monolayer adsorption for the metal ions. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic.

Superadsorbent aerogel based on sunflower stem pith cellulose and layered double hydroxides modified montmorillonite for methylene blue removal from water solution

Sunflower stem pith, an agricultural residue, was used as a starting material for the preparation of bio-based products. Sunflower stem pith nanocellulose (SSP-C) was prepared by sodium hydroxide/urea from the SSP cellulose. The prepared SSP-C was typical of cellulose II. To improve the adsorption capacity of the SSP-C, a bio-based aerogel (SSP-MH) with adsorbed methylene blue (MB) was prepared by compounding layered double hydroxides modified montmorillonite (MH) with SSP-C-based adsorbent, and the chemical characteristics and topology of the adsorbent were determined. The removal performance of SSP-MH in different MB concentrations was examined. Adsorption tests showed that hydrogels containing the same content of MH had higher removal efficiency. The removal rate of MB by SSP-MH was >87.5 % in MB solution (1 g/L), and its maximum adsorption capacity was 263.3 mg/g. The kinetics studies of MB removal were well by quasi-secondary adsorption kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the standard free Gibbs energy change of adsorption (ΔG0) was <0, which was favorable for adsorption of MB. The adsorption efficiency of SSP-MH on MB was still above 95 % by the five cycles of the adsorption/desorption experiment. The prepared samples were conducive to the high-value utilization of SSP.

Synergistic removal performance and mechanism of Cd(II) and As(III) from irrigation water by iron sulfide-based porous biochar

Since Cd(II) and As(III) have extremely opposite chemical characteristics, it is a huge challenging to simultaneously remove these two ions from aqueous solutions. Therefore, a novel iron sulfide-based porous biochar (FSB) was synthesized and used to evaluate its Cd(II) and As(III) removal performance and mechanisms. The characterization and batch experiments results indicated that FeS was successfully loaded on the surface of biochar and increased its adsorption sites. The iron sulfide-based porous biochar was very favorable for the removal of Cd(II) and As(III) in the weakly acidic environment. The maximum adsorption of Cd(II) and As(III) by FSB was 108.8 mg g-1 and 76.3 mg g-1, respectively, according to the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption model, and the adsorption equilibrium time was 12 h and 4 h, respectively, according to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In the coexisting ion system, Cd(II) adsorption was suppressed by Ca2+, Mg2+, and humic acid, but enhanced by PO43- and As(III). As(III) adsorption was inhibited by PO43- and humic acid. Precipitation and complexation are the predominant adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II) and As(III), which contribute to the formation of Cd-O, Fe-O-Cd, As-O, Fe-O-As, ternary complex Cd-Fe-As, and stable compounds FeAsO4·2H2O and CdS. Therefore, The iron sulfide-based porous biochar can be an efficient and environmentally friendly candidate for the treatment of Cd(II) and As(III) co-polluted irrigation water.

Sustainable aerogels based on biobased poly (itaconic acid) for adsorption of cationic dyes

This work reports the synthesis of poly (itaconic acid) by thermal polymerization mediated by 2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride. Furthermore, physical hydrogels were prepared by using high molecular weight poly (itaconic acid) characterized by low dispersity and laponite RD. The hydrogels presented porous 3D network structures, with a high-water penetration of almost 2000 g/g of swelling ratio, which can allow the adsorption sites of both poly (itaconic acid) and laponite RD to be easily exposed and facilitate the adsorption of dyes. The water adsorption followed Schott's pseudo-second-order model. The mechanism of the adsorption process was investigated using 1H and 31P NMR. The hydrogel is able to fast adsorb by a combination of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding by the synergic effect of the clay and poly (itaconic acid). Moreover, the prepared aerogels exhibited a fast removal of Basic Fuchsin, with an adsorption capacity of 67.56 mg/g and a high removal efficiency (~99 %). The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters showed that the BF process of adsorption was spontaneous and feasible, endothermic, and followed physisorption. These results indicated that the PIA/laponite-based aerogel can be considered a promising adsorbent material in textile wastewater treatment.

Emerging iron-based mesoporous materials for adsorptive removal of pollutants: Mechanism, optimization, challenges, and future perspective

Iron-based materials (IBMs) have shown promise as adsorbents due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review provides an overview of the different types of IBMs, their synthesis methods, and their properties. Results found in the adsorption of emerging contaminants to a wide range of IBMs are discussed. The IBMs used were evaluated in terms of their maximum uptake capacity, with special consideration given to environmental conditions such as contact time, solution pH, initial pollutant concentration, etc. The adsorption mechanisms of pollutants are discussed taking into account the results of kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic studies, surface complexation modelling (SCM), and available spectroscopic data. A current overview of molecular modeling and simulation studies related to density functional theory (DFT), surface response methodology (RSM), and artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. In addition, the reusability and suitability of IBMs in real wastewater treatment is shown. The review concludes with the strengths and weaknesses of current research and suggests ideas for future research that will improve our ability to remove contaminants from real wastewater streams.

Effects of biochar on the manganese enrichment and oxidation by a microalga Scenedesmus quadricauda in the aquatic environment

Microalgae play a significant impact in the biogeochemical cycle of Mn(II) in the aquatic ecosystem. Meanwhile, the inflow of biochar into the water bodies is bound to impact the aquatic organisms. However, the influence of biochar on the manganese transformation in algae-rich water has not drawn much attention. Thus, we studied the effects of rice straw biochar on manganese enrichment and oxidation by a common type of algae in freshwater (Scenedesmus quadricauda). The results showed that Mn(II) was absorbed intracellularly and adsorbed extracellularly by active algal cells. A significant portion of enriched Mn(II) was oxidized to amorphous precipitates MnO2, MnOOH, and Mn2O3. Moreover, the extracellular bound Mn(II) content in the coexistent system of algae and biochar increased compared with the pure Scenedesmus quadricauda system. Nevertheless, the intracellular Mn content was continually lowered as the biochar dose rose from an initial 0.2 to 2.0 g·L-1, suggesting that Mn assimilation of the cell was suppressed. It was calculated that the total enrichment ability of Scenedesmus quadricauda in the algae-biochar coexistent system was 0.31- 15.32 mg Mn/g biomass, more than that in the pure algae system. More importantly, with biochar in the algae system, the amount of generated MnOx increased, and more Mn(II) was oxidized into highly-charged Mn(IV). This was probably because the biochar could relieve the stress of massive Mn(II) on algae and support the MnOx precipitates. In brief, moderate biochar promoted the Mn(II) accumulation by algal cells and its oxidation activity. This study offers deeper insight into the bioconversion of Mn(II) by algae and the potential impact of biochar application to the aquatic system.

Adsorption of uranium (VI) complexes with polymer-based spherical activated carbon

Adsorption processes with carbon-based adsorbents have received substantial attention as a solution to remove uranium from drinking water. This study investigated uranium adsorption by a polymer-based spherical activated carbon (PBSAC) characterised by a uniformly smooth exterior and an extended surface of internal cavities accessible via mesopores. The static adsorption of uranium was investigated applying varying PBSAC properties and relevant solution chemistry. Spatial time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) was employed to visualise the distribution of the different uranium species in the PBSAC. The isotherms and thermodynamics calculations revealed monolayer adsorption capacities of 28-667 mg/g and physical adsorption energies of 13-21 kJ/mol. Increasing the surface oxygen content of the PBSAC to 10 % enhanced the adsorption and reduced the equilibrium time to 2 h, while the WHO drinking water guideline of 30 µgU/L could be achieved for an initial concentration of 250 µgU/L. Uranium adsorption with PBSAC was favourable at the pH 6-8. At this pH range, uranyl carbonate complexes (UO2CO3(aq), UO2(CO3)22-, (UO2)2CO3(OH)3-) predominated in the solution, and the ToF-SIMS analysis revealed that the adsorption of these complexes occurred on the surface and inside the PBSAC due to intra-particle diffusion. For the uranyl cations (UO22+, UO2OH+) at pH 2-4, only shallow adsorption in the outermost PBSAC layers was observed. The work demonstrated the effective removal of uranium from contaminated natural water (67 µgU/L) and meeting both German (10 µgU/L) and WHO guideline concentrations. These findings also open opportunities to consider PBSAC in hybrid treatment technologies for uranium removal, for instance, from high-level radioactive waste.

Low-molecular-weight aromatic acids mediated the adsorption of Cd2+ onto biochars: effects and mechanisms

Low-molecular-weight aromatic acids (LWMAAs), a ubiquitous organic substance in natural systems, are important in controlling the environmental fate of potentially toxic metals. However, little is known about the effects of LWMAAs on the interactions between biochars and potentially toxic metals. Herein, the influences of three aromatic acids, including benzoic acid (BA), p-hydroxy benzoic acid (PHBA), and syringic acid (SA), on the adsorption of Cd2+ onto biochars generated at three different pyrolysis temperatures under acidic and neutral conditions were examined. Generally, the adsorption ability of biochars for Cd2+ improved with the increase of pyrolysis temperature, which was ascribed to the increased inorganic element contents (e.g., P, S, and Si) and aromaticity, increasing the complexation between mineral anions and metal ions, and the enhanced cation-π interaction. Interestingly, aromatic acids considerably inhibited the adsorption of Cd2+ onto biochars, which was mainly ascribed to multi-mechanisms, including competition of LWMAA molecules and metal ions for adsorption sites, the pore blocking effect, the weakened interaction between mineral anions and Cd2+ induced by the adsorbed aromatic acids, and the formation of water-soluble metal-aromatic acid complexes. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of LWMAAs on Cd2+ adsorption intensively depended on the aromatic acid type and followed the order of SA > PHBA > BA. This trend was related to the differences in the physicochemical features (e.g., the octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) and molecular size) of diverse LMWAAs. The results of this study demonstrate that the effects of coexisting LMWAAs should not be ignored when biochars are applied in soil remediation and wastewater treatment.

Statistical physics modeling study of an environmentally friendly and efficient adsorbent derived from the brown macroalgae Bifurcaria bifurcata for the removal of Bisphenol A

The brown macroalgae Bifurcaria bifurcata was valued and used to develop a carbonaceous material activated by H2SO4 (AC-BB@H2SO4), with the goal of assessing its adsorption ability against Bisphenol A (BPA). During the adsorption experiments, the effects of the adsorbent dose, solution pH, and contact time were examined, and the results were m = 0.4 g/L, pH = 8.3, and t = 120 min, with an elimination yield of 91.6 %. With comparatively high R2 values, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model perfectly fitted the experimental data. Langmuir's model was found to be the best appropriate for describing the adsorption equilibrium of BPA on AC-BB@H2SO4. The thermodynamic findings show that BPA adsorption on AC-BB@H2SO4 was spontaneous, favorable, and endothermic in nature. Even after six cycles of reuse, regeneration testing demonstrated that our adsorbent could eliminate BPA by >50 %. The BPA adsorption mechanism's statistical physics control parameters were determined and analyzed. BPA's adsorption energies were <40 kJ/mol, indicating that the interactions between BPA and AC-BB@H2SO4 were governed by physical forces (i.e., hydrogen bonding and van der Waals and electrostatic interactions). All of these intriguing findings indicate that our carbonaceous material might have direct ramifications in the field of wastewater treatment, notably for the clearance of BPA, which is difficult to biodegrade.

Rapid and efficient removal of multiple heavy metals from diverse types of water using magnetic biochars derived from antibiotic fermentation residue

Pyrolysis is a promising method to treat antibiotic fermentation residue (AFR), a hazardous waste in China, with the benefits of detoxification and resource recycling. However, the application of the AFR-derived biochar has been limited yet, restricting the use of pyrolysis to treat AFR. Herein, for the first time, we reported the use of magnetic biochars derived from vancomycin fermentation residue to rapidly and efficiently co-adsorb multiple heavy metals from diverse types of water with complex matrices. The biochar prepared at 700 °C (labeled as VBC700) exhibited high affinity and selectivity for multiple heavy metals, especially for Ag(I), Hg(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II). The kinetics for Ag(I), Hg(II), and Pb(II) were ultrafast with an equilibrium time of only 5 min, while those for Cu(II) were relatively slower. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model for Ag(I), Hg(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) reached 177.4, 105.9, 387.1, 124.5 mg/g, respectively, which were superior to much previously reported adsorbents. Impressively, Na(I), K(I), Ca(II), Mg(II), and salinity did not affect the capture of these heavy metals, and thus >99% of Ag(I), Pb(II), and Cu(II) were concurrently removed from complex water matrices including seawater, which has rarely been reported before. Furthermore, VBC700 remained high adsorption performance at pH ≥ 3. The adsorption mechanisms included ion exchange, precipitation, and inner-sphere complexation. Overall, the results demonstrate that VBC700 would be an excellent adsorbent to co-capture multiple heavy metals from diverse types of water, highlighting the feasibility of using pyrolysis to achieve a win-win goal for AFR management and heavy metal pollution control.

Adsorption of acetochlor-contaminated water systems using novel P-doped biochar: Effects, application, and mechanism

Given the serious threat of acetochlor (ACT) to the aquatic ecological environment, designing wastewater treatment-oriented adsorbents for the sustainable remediation of actual ACT-contaminated water is a promising yet challenging strategy. Herein, a novel P-doped biochar (PBC-800) with a high adsorption capacity (51.34 mg g-1) and a rapid reaction rate (47.35 mg g-1 h-1) for ACT was prepared through pyrolyzing of rice straw biomass pre-impregnated with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4). Additionally, P-doped biochars synthesized at different pyrolysis temperatures exhibited significant variations in ACT adsorption performance, which was mainly ascribed to the distinction between hydrophilicity and sp2 conjugate C (ID/IG = 0.84-1.08). The adsorption behavior of ACT on PBC-800 followed the Elovich kinetics and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic calculations indicated that the adsorption of ACT by PBC-800 was a spontaneously disordered decreasing exothermic process. Besides, PBC-800 exhibited a powerful anti-interference for ACT adsorption within complex water matrices, highlighting its potential for various of practical applications. Through characterization analysis and further experiments, it was proved that the excellent adsorption performance of PBC-800 on ACT was ascribed to a combination of physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms, including 57.5% pore filling, 23.4% hydrophobic interaction, 12.7% π-π interaction, and 6.4% hydrogen bonding. Moreover, PBC-800 exerted a prominent adhesion impact upon Gram-positive and negative bacteria at 3 h. This study offers a new idea for the utilization of agricultural residues and provides insights into the mechanism of ACT adsorption through its derived biochar.

Evaluation of hydrochar from peach stones for caffeine removal from aqueous medium and treatment of a synthetic mixture

The presence of micropollutants, such as caffeine (CAF), has been detected throughout the world, since conventional treatment plants are not able to properly degrade them. CAF is a widely consumed stimulant, and has been demanding the development of efficient methodologies for its removal. Aiming at the agriculture waste valorization, a new hydrochar was developed based on chemical and thermal modification of peach stones (mod-PS) for CAF removal from water and from a synthetic mixture. The morphology, functional groups and surface electrical charge of the adsorbent were characterized by SEM, FTIR and zeta potential, respectively. Regarding CAF adsorption performance, the equilibrium time was reached at 480 min and the pseudo-second-order model presented the best fit for the experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacity was 68.39 mg g-1 (298 K) and the Langmuir model exhibited a better fit for the isothermal data. The thermodynamic properties confirmed that the process was exothermic, spontaneous and reversible. The main adsorption mechanisms were hydrogen bonds and π-interactions. The global removal efficiency was satisfactory in the synthetic mixture simulating real wastewater (67%). Therefore, the proposed new hydrochar has potential application as a low-cost adsorbent for CAF removal.

Fe/N co-doped magnetic porous hydrochar for chromium(VI) removal in water: Adsorption performance and mechanism investigation

Four kinds of Fe/N co-doped porous hydrochar were prepared by one/two-step N-doping schemes using microwave/traditional pyrolysis methods for removing Cr(VI) from aqueous phase. Heterocyclic-N was introduced through CO(NH2)2-based hydrothermal carbonization process, which could adjust the electronic structure of the hydrochar framework. Furthermore, Fe0 and Fe3O4 were embedded into hydrochar via carbothermal reduction reaction using FeCl3 as the precursor, which improved the reducibility and magnetism of the material. The modified hydrochar exhibited pH-dependency and rapid kinetic equilibrium, and the maximal adsorption amount of magnetic porous hydrochar obtained by microwave-assisted one-step N-doping (MP1HCMW) reached 274.34 mg/g. Meanwhile, the modified hydrochar had a high tolerance to multiple co-existing ions and the removal efficiency maintained above 73.91 % during five regeneration cycles. Additionally, MP1HCMW efficiently removed Cr(VI) via pore filling, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, reduction, complexation, and precipitation. Summarily, Fe/N co-doped porous hydrochar was a feasible adsorbent with outstanding remediation potential for Cr(VI)-contaminated water.

Fabrication of Bacterial Cellulose/Chitosan-MIL-100(Fe) Composite for Adsorptive Removal of Dacarbazine

In this research, a polymeric composite based on a chitosan/bacterial cellulose (CS/BC) matrix filled with MIL-100(Fe) particles was prepared to solve the recyclability of issue MIL-100(Fe) particles and utilized as an efficient adsorbent for removing dacarbazine (DTIC) from wastewater. The adsorption capacity of the composite (CS/BC-MIL) was higher than both MIL-100(Fe) and the CS/BC polymeric matrix. The adsorption performance of the fabricated composite was evaluated through kinetics and isotherm studies. While isotherm studies revealed that the adsorption of DTIC onto the adsorbent can be well described by the Freundlich model, kinetics studies indicated that a combination of factors, rather than a single rate-limiting factor, are responsible for the adsorption rate. Thermodynamics investigation showed that the adsorption of DTIC to CS/BC-MIL composite is exothermic and occurs spontaneously. Additionally, due to the negative entropy change, it was established that the adsorption is governed by the enthalpy change. Exploring the solution chemistry revealed that the optimum pH for the adsorption process was about 4. Moreover, the CS/BC-MIL can selectively adsorb DTIC in the presence of other pharmaceuticals like doxorubicin (DOX). Furthermore, regeneration investigations disclosed that the composite holds its structural features and has an acceptable adsorption capacity after several cycles of adsorption/desorption.

Enhancing the efficiency of magnetically driven carbon nitride-based nanocomposites with magnetic nanoflowers for the removal of methylene blue dye at neutral pH

The present study focuses on the elaboration of magnetic nanocomposites by the in situ incorporation of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) with spherical and nanoflower-like morphologies in graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) sheets using two different synthetic routes. Nanomaterials are characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, zetametry, vibrating sample magnetometry, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The decoration of the carbon nitride matrix with the magnetic NPs enhanced optical and textural properties. The influence of the morphology of the magnetic NPs on the adsorptive and photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposites under different pH conditions (4.5, 6.9, and 10.6) was assessed from batch tests to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. In extreme pH conditions, the nanocomposites exhibited lower or equivalent MB removal capacity compared to the pure g-C3N4. However, at neutral medium, the nanocomposite with incorporated Fe3O4 nanoflowers showed a significantly higher removal efficiency (80.7%) due to the combination of a high adsorption capacity and a good photocatalytic activity in this pH region. The proposed nanocomposite is a promising alternative to remove cationic dyes from water by magnetic assistance, since no pH adjustment of the polluted effluent is required, reducing costs and environmental impact in the dyeing industry.

Interactions of humic acid with pristine poly (lactic acid) microplastics in aqueous solution

Microplastics and natural organic matter are present in the aquatic environment and their reciprocal interaction plays important roles in the transport and behavior of nutrients and contaminants. Nevertheless, we lack mechanistic understanding on these interactions, especially in the case of biodegradable plastics. Here we investigate the adsorption of a commercial humic acid onto poly (lactic acid) (PLA) microplastics in aqueous solution. While the pseudo-second order kinetic model provided a more accurate representation of the adsorption kinetics, the Elovich model also produced a good fit, suggesting that chemisorption may be the rate-limiting step. The equilibrium data was better fit by the Langmuir model, that provided a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.118 ± 0.006 mg·g-1. The obtained values for the separation factor (RL) and free energy (E) suggest that adsorption of humic acid onto PLA is controlled by physisorption. We studied the effects of pH, ionic strength, and PLA concentration on the adsorption of humic acid onto PLA and demonstrated that electrostatic interactions and aggregation are important. The humic acid was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), before and after interacting with PLA. This set of analyses demonstrated that PLA caused alterations in the molecular structure of humic acid, primarily attributed to modifications in hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. Therefore, we hypothesize that the carboxylic groups of humic acid formed dimers in contact with PLA. This study provides new insights into the interactions between organic matter and a biodegradable microplastic in aqueous systems.
