Warming and eutrophication combine to restructure diatoms and dinoflagellates

Biogeochemical factors regulating photosynthetically dissolved organic carbon produced by phytoplankton in the Taiwan Strait

The distribution and mechanisms of photosynthetically dissolved organic carbon (PDOC) released by marine phytoplankton are frequently neglected and inadequately understood because most studies on carbon sequestration capacity have focused on photosynthetic particulate organic carbon. In this study, percentage extracellular release (PER) and its environmental influencing factors were investigated for 10 cruises in the Taiwan Strait during 2006-2023. The results indicated that the PER increased horizontally from the nearshore to the off-shelf and vertically from the surface to the bottom within the euphotic zone. PER tends to be low in eutrophic waters such as upwellings and estuaries and high in oligotrophic waters. The study revealed that the average contribution of PDOC to total primary productivity (TPP) in the Taiwan Strait could reach 18.2 ± 11.7%, which is similar to the previously estimated global oceanic values. PDOC production satisfied approximately 25% the carbon requirements of heterotropic bacteria (HB). A detailed analysis of the PER combined with model simulations proved that the distribution of the PER in the Taiwan Strait was caused by the joint contribution of irradiance, size-fractionated phytoplankton, and nutrient stoichiometry. Our results contradict the view that the PER is a constant factor that is unaffected by TPP. However, there was a significant negative correlation between the PER and TPP. The PDOC was always lower than the bacterial carbon demand for a broad range of bacterial growth efficiencies, suggesting a weak coupling between phytoplankton exudation and bacterial metabolism. This challenges the idea that there is a well-coupled relationship between bacteria and phytoplankton present on the continental shelf. These findings indicate significant discrepancies in PDOC mechanisms and the quantitative importance of nearshore eutrophic and off-shelf oligotrophic environments. Consequently, it is unwise to use uniform PERs without differentiation under trophic conditions when reevaluating and appraising marine carbon fixation.

Temperature and nutrients drive distinct successions between diatoms and dinoflagellates over the past 40 years: Implications for climate warming and eutrophication

Diatoms and dinoflagellates are two typical functional groups of phytoplankton, playing important roles in ecosystem processes and biogeochemical cycles. Changes in diatoms and dinoflagellates are thought to be one of the possible mechanisms for the increase in harmful algal blooms (HABs), due to changing hydrological conditions associated with climate change and human activities. However, little is known about their ability to adapt to changing ocean environments, thus making it difficult to know whether and how they are adapting. By analyzing a 44-year monitoring dataset in the central Bohai Sea during 1978-2021, we found that the abundance ratio of diatoms to dinoflagellates showed a decreasing trend seasonally and ecologically, indicating that the phytoplankton community underwent distinct successional processes from diatom dominance to diatom-dinoflagellate co-dominance. These processes exhibited varying responses to temperature, nutrient concentrations and ratios, and their interactions, of which temperature primarily drove the seasonal succession whereas nutrients were responsible for the ecological succession. Specifically, diatoms showed a preference for lower temperatures and higher DIP concentrations, and were able to tolerate lower DIN at lower temperatures. In contrast, dinoflagellates tended to prevail at conditions of warming and high N/P ratios. These different traits of diatoms and dinoflagellates reflected the fact that warming as a result of rising temperature and eutrophication as a consequence of nutrient input would favor dinoflagellates over diatoms. Moreover, the increasing dominance of dinoflagellates indicated that dinoflagellate blooms were likely to become more frequent and intense in the central Bohai Sea.

Does climate change increase the risk of marine toxins? Insights from changing seawater conditions

Marine toxins produced by marine organisms threaten human health and impose a heavy public health burden on coastal countries. Lately, there has been an emergence of marine toxins in regions that were previously unaffected, and it is believed that climate change may be a significant factor. This paper systematically summarizes the impact of climate change on the risk of marine toxins in terms of changes in seawater conditions. From our findings, climate change can cause ocean warming, acidification, stratification, and sea-level rise. These climatic events can alter the surface temperature, salinity, pH, and nutrient conditions of seawater, which may promote the growth of various algae and bacteria, facilitating the production of marine toxins. On the other hand, climate change may expand the living ranges of marine organisms (such as algae, bacteria, and fish), thereby exacerbating the production and spread of marine toxins. In addition, the sources, distribution, and toxicity of ciguatoxin, tetrodotoxin, cyclic imines, and microcystin were described to improve public awareness of these emerging marine toxins. Looking ahead, developing interdisciplinary cooperation, strengthening monitoring of emerging marine toxins, and exploring more novel approaches are essential to better address the risks of marine toxins posed by climate change. Altogether, the interrelationships between climate, marine ecology, and marine toxins were analyzed in this study, providing a theoretical basis for preventing and managing future health risks from marine toxins.

Indirect Impact of Eutrophication on Occurrence, Air-Water Exchange, and Vertical Sinking Fluxes of Antibiotics in a Subtropical River

A significant challenge that warrants attention is the influence of eutrophication on the biogeochemical cycle of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments. Antibiotics pollution in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China was examined to offer new insights into the effects of eutrophication on the occurrence, air-water exchange fluxes (Fair-water), and vertical sinking fluxes (Fsinking) of antibiotics. Antibiotics transferred to the atmosphere primarily through aerosolization controlled by phytoplankton biomass and significant spatiotemporal variations were observed in the Fair-water of individual antibiotics throughout all sites and seasons. The Fsinking of ∑AB14 (defined as a summary of 14 antibiotics) was 750.46 ± 283.19, 242.71 ± 122.87, and 346.74 ± 249.52 ng of m-2 d-1 in spring, summer, and winter seasons. Eutrophication indirectly led to an elevated pH, which reduced seasonal Fair-water of antibiotics, sediment aromaticity, and phytoplankton hydrophobicity, thereby decreasing antibiotic accumulation in sediments and phytoplankton. Negative correlations were further found between Fsinking and the water column daily loss of antibiotics with phytoplankton biomass. The novelty of this study is to provide new complementary knowledge for the regulation mechanisms of antibiotics by phytoplankton biological pump, offering novel perspectives and approaches to understanding the coupling between eutrophication and migration and fate of antibiotics in a subtropical eutrophic river.

Relative prevalence of top-down versus bottom-up control in planktonic ecosystem under eutrophication and climate change: A comparative study of typical bay and estuary

Eutrophication and climate change may affect the top-down versus bottom-up controls in aquatic ecosystems. However, the relative prevalence of the two controls in planktonic ecosystems along the eutrophication and climate gradients has rarely been addressed. Here, using the field surveys of 17 years in a typical bay and estuary, we test two opposite patterns of trophic control dominance and their response to regional temporal eutrophication and climate fluctuations. It was found that trophic control of planktonic ecosystems fluctuated between the dominance of top-down and bottom-up controls on time scales in both the bay and estuary studied. The relative prevalence of these two controls in both ecosystems was significantly driven directly by regional dissolved inorganic nitrogen but, for the estuary, also by the nonlinear effects of regional sea surface temperature. In terms of indirect pathways, community relationships (synchrony and grazing pressure) in the bay are driven by both regional dissolved inorganic nitrogen - soluble reactive phosphorus ratio and sea surface temperature, but this drive did not continue to be transmitted to the trophic control. Conversely, trophic control in estuary was directly related to grazing pressure and indirectly related to synchrony. These findings support the view that eutrophication and climate drive the relative prevalence of top-down versus bottom-up controls at ecosystem and temporal scales in planktonic ecosystems, which has important implications for predicting the potential impacts of anthropogenic and environmental perturbations on the structure and function of marine ecosystems.

Influence of the community assemblage on sulfur distributions in the South China sea

Marine distribution of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and its cleavage product dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is greatly affected by the community structures of bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Spatial distributions of dissolved and particulate DMSP (DMSPd,p), and DMS were measured and their relationships with DMSP lyase activity (DLA), abundance of DMSP-consuming bacteria (DCB), and the community structures of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and bacteria were determined during summer in the South China Sea (SCS). The depth distributions of DMSPd,p exhibited a similar trend with Chl a, reaching their maxima in the mixing layer. The DMS concentration was positively correlated with DCB abundance and DLA, indicating that DCB and DMSP lyase had a significant effect on DMS production. High DMS concentrations in the horizontal distribution coincided with high DCB abundance and DLA and may be due to the rapid growth of phytoplankton resulting from the high dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration brought by the cold vortices. Moreover, the highest copepod abundance at station G3 coincided with the highest DMS concentrations there among stations B4, F2, and G3. These results suggest that copepod may play an important role in DMS production. The bacterial SAR11 clade was positively correlated with DLA, indicating its significant contribution to DMSP degradation in the SCS. These findings contribute to the understanding of the effect of the community assemblage on DMSP/DMS distributions in the SCS dominated by mesoscale vortices.

Electrophysiological techniques in marine microalgae study: A new perspective for harmful algal bloom (HAB) research

Electrophysiological techniques, by measuring bioelectrical signals and ion channel activities in tissues and cells, are now widely utilized to study ion channel-related physiological functions and their underlying mechanisms. Electrophysiological techniques have been extensively employed in the investigation of animals, plants, and microorganisms; however, their application in marine algae lags behind that in other organisms. In this paper, we present an overview of current electrophysiological techniques applicable to algae while reviewing the historical usage of such techniques in this field. Furthermore, we explore the potential specific applications of electrophysiological technology in harmful algal bloom (HAB) research. The application prospects in the studies of stress tolerance, competitive advantage, nutrient absorption, toxin synthesis and secretion by HAB microalgae are discussed and anticipated herein with the aim of providing novel perspectives on HAB investigations.

Water stratification alters phytoplankton assemblages in scallop farming waters of the North Yellow Sea in China

As evaluation indicators of the primary productivity, the phytoplankton biomass and community structure are of great significance to the fishery industry, which can be driven by ocean currents, nutrients and water stratification. In the present study, the characteristics of phytoplankton assemblages in different water layers of a typical Yesso scallop farming area in Zhangzi Island, the North Yellow Sea were investigated from March 2021 to January 2022. According to the vertical distribution of temperature, water stratification was observed from June to August (stratification period), and disappeared in March, October and the following January with vertical homogeneity (mixing period). 18S rRNA gene sequencing results revealed that Pyrrophyta was the most dominant phylum during the sampling period, with high gene proportions in the stratification (63.36%) and mixing periods (77.35%). The gene proportion of Bacillariophyta in the stratification period was 5.44%, which was significantly lower than that in the mixing period of 8.93% (p < 0.05). Moreover, Pseudo-nitzschia, a toxin-producing taxon affiliated with Bacillariophyta, exhibited a significantly higher proportion in the stratification period than in the mixing period. During the stratification period, a number of toxin-producing taxa such as Pseudo-nitzschia and Karlodinium were enriched in the bottom layer, which was 1.29-fold and 1.37-fold of that in the surface layer, respectively. Redundancy analysis showed that phosphate and water temperature were major environmental factors driving the vertical distribution of phytoplankton assemblages. The phosphate (0.11 μM) and silicate (2.09 μM) concentrations in the surface layer approached the minimum threshold for phytoplankton growth, and the stoichiometric limitation of phosphate was detected in the surface and middle layers. Collectively, these results indicated that the decreased proportion ratio of Bacillariophyta to Pyrrophyta and unfavorable community composition of Bacillariophyta for scallops were observed during summer, which might result from the phosphate limitation driven by water stratification. The results will further our understanding of the dynamics of phytoplankton communities under the background of intensifying ocean stratification and provide ecological guidance for mollusc mariculture.

Unveiling the evolution of phytoplankton communities: Decades-long insights into the southern Yellow Sea, China (1959-2023)

We obtained historical and observational data on phytoplankton communities from 1959 to 2023 to explore the responses of the phytoplankton community structure to long-term environmental changes in the southern Yellow Sea (SYS), China. The results revealed a decrease in the proportions of diatom cell abundance within the phytoplankton community by 8 %, accompanied by a corresponding increase in that of dinoflagellates. Dominant phytoplankton species were mainly chain-forming diatoms before 2000, and large dinoflagellate species from the genera Tripos and Noctiluca increased their dominance after 2000. Warm-water phytoplankton species have increased in dominance over the study period. Correlation analysis revealed that the ocean warming and alterations in nutrient structure (N/P and Si/N ratios) were mostly responsible for the long-term evolution trend, and these changes may result in an increase in dinoflagellate harmful algal blooms, reduced efficiency of the biological carbon pump, and heightened hypoxia in the future, which should draw our attention.

Diatom-dinoflagellate succession in the Bohai Sea: The role of N/P ratios and dissolved organic nitrogen components

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) is a pivotal component of total dissolved nitrogen pools, serving as a crucial nitrogen source for phytoplankton. This study investigated the impact of nitrogen-to-phosphorus (N/P) ratios and different DON components (hydrophilic vs hydrophobic DON) on diatom-dinoflagellate succession through field culture experiments. Results showed that dinoflagellates have a competitive advantage under high N/P ratios and phosphorus limitation, regardless of DON or DIN treatments. Hydrophilic DON exhibits greater bioavailability than hydrophobic DON (40.6% vs. 21.7 %), resulting in increased algal biomass and diatoms dominance in the community. Additionally, DON was categorized into labile and refractory components (LDON and RDON) based on bioavailability. LDON primarily consists of protein-like components that can be readily consumed by algae, whereas RDON is primarily composed of humic-like components that are less accessible to algae. Diatoms and dinoflagellates exhibited differential responses to LDON and RDON, with diatoms thriving in high LDON environments, while dinoflagellates gained a competitive advantage when RDON was the predominant nitrogen source. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was observed between bioavailable nitrogen concentration (BAN: DIN + LDON) and the ratio of dinoflagellates to diatoms (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study highlights the role of LDON in promoting diatom dominance, whereas environments dominated by RDON foster dinoflagellate success. These findings enhance our comprehension of diatom-dinoflagellate succession dynamics.

The effects of temperature and sulfamethoxazole on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Phaeodactylum tricornutum

The misuse of antibiotics has brought potential ecological risks to marine ecosystems, especially under a changing climate. Laboratory experiments were conducted to understand the impact of rising temperatures and antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) abuse on marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Temperatures of 21 and 24 °C were optimal for the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of P. tricornutum. When exposed to higher temperatures (≥27 °C), the growth and photosynthesis were inhibited. High concentrations of SMX (≥100 mg/L) caused rapid and acute toxicological effects on the phytoplankton. In contrast, low concentrations of SMX (1 mg/L) exhibited hormesis. When P. tricornutum was exposed to SMX at high temperatures, the stress on the phytoplankton was even more pronounced. This suggests that the combination of rising temperatures and antibiotic pollution may have a more significant negative impact on marine phytoplankton than either stressor alone. Neglecting the interaction between these stressors may lead to underestimating their combined effects on marine ecosystems.

Governance pathway for coastal eutrophication based on regime shifts in diatom-dinoflagellate composition of the Bohai and Baltic Seas

Regime shifts in the diatom-dinoflagellate composition have occurred in the Baltic Sea (BS) and Bohai Sea (BHS) under eutrophication and have affected the entire coastal ecosystem, damaging the regulatory, provisioning, cultural, and supporting service functions of marine ecosystems. Therefore, finding a solution to restore the balance of phytoplankton community composition and mitigate eutrophication is of utmost importance. In this study, the Driver (per capita gross domestic product)-Pressure (terrestrial inputs)-State (seawater environmental parameters)-Impact (proportions of diatoms and dinoflagellates)-Response (eutrophication governance projects) framework served as a guide for our analysis of the causal relationship among various environmental components in the coastal system. The relevant data in BS and BHS spanning from the 1950s to the 2010s were collected and used to construct a diatom-dinoflagellate composition single index, which allowed us to identify the shifts in regimes (mutation points and phases) of the diatom-dinoflagellate composition and environmental factors using sequential t-test analysis. We also identified key environmental factors that moderated the diatom-dinoflagellate composition using redundancy analysis and analyzed the partial effects of the main environmental factors on the diatom-dinoflagellate composition using a generalized additive model. Finally, the regulation of the eutrophication governance investment on diatom-dinoflagellate composition was investigated. We found that (1) BS is a "time machine," with coastal eutrophication governance and regime shift of diatom-dinoflagellate composition and environmental factors two decades earlier than that in BHS; (2) in BS, the key moderation factor of diatom proportion is SiO3-Si and those of dinoflagellates are sea surface salinity and N:P ratio; in BHS, the key moderation factors of diatom proportion are PO4-P and Si:N ratio and those of dinoflagellate are dissolved inorganic nitrogen and N:P and Si:P ratios; (3) it is projected that BHS will enter its recovery phase from eutrophication after mid-2020s. In summary, the N/P/Si stoichiometric relationships should be given greater consideration, with the exception of the "dose-response" relationship in both sea areas. Our results indicate an urgent need for an improved mechanistic understanding of how phytoplankton biodiversity changes in response to changes in nutrient load and how we should ultimately deal with the challenges that arise.

Anthropogenic nutrients and phytoplankton diversity in Kenya's coastal waters: An ecological quality assessment of sea turtle foraging sites

We assessed ecological quality status (EQS) of coastal waters following claims of increasing sea turtle fibro-papillomatosis (FP) infections in Kenya, a disease hypothesized to be associated with 'poor' ecological health. We established widespread phosphate (P) and silicate (Si) limitation, dissolved ammonium contamination and an increase in potential harmful algal blooming species. Variations in the EQS was established in the sites depending on the indicators used and seasons. Generally, more sites located near hotels, tidal creeks, and estuarine areas showed 'poor', and 'bad' EQS during rainy period compared to dry season. Additionally, 90.1 % of the sites in 'poor' and 'bad' EQS based on dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Low dissolved oxygen, elevated temperature, salinity and ammonium, 'poor' EQS based on DIN, and potential bio-toxin-producing phytoplankton species characterized the FP prevalent areas, specifically during the dry season suggesting environmental stress pointing to the hypothesized connection between ecological and sea turtle health.

Microalgal-bacterial biofilms for wastewater treatment: Operations, performances, mechanisms, and uncertainties

Microalgal-bacterial biofilms have been increasingly considered of great potential in wastewater treatment due to the advantages of microalgal-bacterial synergistic pollutants removal/recovery, CO2 sequestration, and cost-effective biomass-water separation. However, such advantages may vary widely among different types of microalgal-bacterial biofilms, as the biofilms could be formed on different shapes and structures of attachment substratum, generating "false hope" for certain systems in large-scale wastewater treatment if the operating conditions and pollutants removal properties are evaluated based on the general term "microalgal-bacterial biofilm". This study, therefore, classified microalgal-bacterial biofilms into biofilms formed on 2D substratum, biofilms formed on 3D substratum, and biofilms formed without substratum (i.e. microalgal-bacterial granular sludge, MBGS). Biofilms formed on 2D substratum display higher microalgae fractions and nutrients removal efficiencies, while the adopted long hydraulic retention times were unacceptable for large-scale wastewater treatment. MBGS are featured with much lower microalgae fractions, most efficient pollutants removal, and acceptable retention times for realistic application, yet the feasibility of using natural sunlight should be further explored. 3D substratum systems display wide variations in operating conditions and pollutants removal properties because of diversified substratum shapes and structures. 2D and 3D substratum biofilms share more common in eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbial community structures, while MGBS biofilms are more enriched with microorganisms favoring EPS production, biofilm formation, and denitrification. The specific roles of stratified extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in nutrients adsorption and condensation still require in-depth exploration. Nutrients removal uncertainties caused by microalgal-bacterial synergy decoupling under insufficient illumination, limited microbial community control, and possible greenhouse gas emission exacerbation arising from microalgal N2O generation were also indicated. This review is helpful for revealing the true potential of applying various microalgal-bacterial biofilms in large-scale wastewater treatment, and will provoke some insights on the challenges to the ideal state of synergistic pollutants reclamation and carbon neutrality via microalgal-bacterial interactions.

Cryptochrome PtCPF1 regulates high temperature acclimation of marine diatoms through coordination of iron and phosphorus uptake

Increasing ocean temperatures threaten the productivity and species composition of marine diatoms. High temperature response and regulation are important for the acclimation of marine diatoms to such environments. However, the molecular mechanisms behind their acclimation to high temperature are still largely unknown. In this study, the abundance of PtCPF1 homologs (a member of the cryptochrome-photolyase family in the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum) transcripts in marine phytoplankton is shown to increase with rising temperature based on Tara Oceans datasets. Moreover, the expression of PtCPF1 in P. tricornutum at high temperature (26 °C) was much higher than that at optimum temperature (20 °C). Deletion of PtCPF1 in P. tricornutum disrupted the expression of genes encoding two phytotransferrins (ISIP2A and ISIP1) and two Na+/P co-transporters (PHATRDRAFT_47667 and PHATRDRAFT_40433) at 26 °C. This further impacted the uptake of Fe and P, and eventually caused the arrest of cell division. Gene expression, Fe and P uptake, and cell division were restored by rescue with the native PtCPF1 gene. Furthermore, PtCPF1 interacts with two putative transcription factors (BolA and TF IIA) that potentially regulate the expression of genes encoding phytotransferrins and Na+/P co-transporters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to reveal PtCPF1 as an essential regulator in the acclimation of marine diatoms to high temperature through the coordination of Fe and P uptake. Therefore, these findings help elucidate how marine diatoms acclimate to high temperature.

Enantioselective transformation of phytoplankton-derived dihydroxypropanesulfonate by marine bacteria

Chirality, a fundamental property of matter, is often overlooked in the studies of marine organic matter cycles. Dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS), a globally abundant organosulfur compound, serves as an ecologically important currency for nutrient and energy transfer from phytoplankton to bacteria in the ocean. However, the chirality of DHPS in nature and its transformation remain unclear. Here, we developed a novel approach using chiral phosphorus-reagent labeling to separate DHPS enantiomers. Our findings demonstrated that at least one enantiomer of DHPS is present in marine diatoms and coccolithophores, and that both enantiomers are widespread in marine environments. A novel chiral-selective DHPS catabolic pathway was identified in marine Roseobacteraceae strains, where HpsO and HpsP dehydrogenases at the gateway to DHPS catabolism act specifically on R-DHPS and S-DHPS, respectively. R-DHPS is also a substrate for the dehydrogenase HpsN. All three dehydrogenases generate stable hydrogen bonds between the chirality-center hydroxyls of DHPS and highly conserved residues, and HpsP also form coordinate-covalent bonds between the chirality-center hydroxyls and Zn2+, which determines the mechanistic basis of strict stereoselectivity. We further illustrated the role of enzymatic promiscuity in the evolution of DHPS metabolism in Roseobacteraceae and SAR11. This study provides the first evidence of chirality's involvement in phytoplankton-bacteria metabolic currencies, opening a new avenue for understanding the ocean organosulfur cycle.

Environmental forcing of phytoplankton carbon-to-diversity ratio and carbon-to-chlorophyll ratio: A case study in Jiaozhou Bay, the Yellow Sea

The relationships between phytoplankton carbon (C) biomass and diversity (i.e., C-to-H' ratio) and chlorophyll a (i.e., C-to-Chl a ratio) are good indicators of marine ecosystem functioning and stability. Here we conducted four cruises spanning 2 years in Jiaozhou Bay to explore the dynamics of C-to-H' and C-to-Chl a ratios. The results showed that the phytoplankton C biomass and diversity were dominated by diatoms, followed by dinoflagellates. The average C-to-H' ratio ranged from 84.10 to 912.17, with high values occurring in the northern region of the bay. In contrast, the average C-to-Chl a ratio ranged between 15.55 and 89.47, and high values primarily appeared in the northern or northeastern part of the bay. In addition, the redundancy analysis showed that temperature and phosphate (DIP) were significantly correlated with both ratios in most cases, indicating that temperature and DIP may be key factors affecting the dynamics of C-to-H' and C-to-Chl a ratios.

Toxic dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi induces apoptosis in Neuro-2a cells through an oxidative stress-mediated mitochondrial pathway

The dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi is a toxic bloom-forming species that threatens aquaculture and public health worldwide. Previous studies showed that K. mikimotoi induces neurotoxicity; however, the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. In this study, three neural cell lines were used to investigate the potential neurotoxicity of K. mikimotoi. The tested cells were exposed to a ruptured cell solution (RCS) of K. mikimotoi at different concentrations (0.5 × 105, 1.0 × 105, 2.0 × 105, 4.0 × 105, and 6 × 105 cells mL-1) for 24 h, and the RCS decreased cell viabilities and promoted Neuro-2a (N2A) cell apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. The underlying mechanism was further investigated in N2A cells. At the biochemical level, the RCS stimulated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) formation, decreased SOD activity, and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). At the gene level, the moderate RCS treatment (2.0 × 105 cells mL-1) upregulated antioxidant response genes (e.g., nrf-2, HO-1, NQO-1, and cat) to alleviate RCS-induced oxidative stress, while the high RCS treatment (4.0 × 105 cells mL-1) downregulated these genes, thereby aggravating oxidative stress. Meanwhile, apoptosis-related genes (e.g., p53, caspase 3, and bax2) were significantly upregulated and the anti-apoptotic gene bcl2 was suppressed after RCS treatment. Western blotting results for Caspase 3, Bax2 and Bcl2 were consistent with the mRNA trends. These results revealed that K. mikimotoi RCS can induce neural cell apoptosis via the oxidative stress-mediated mitochondrial pathway, providing novel insights into the neurotoxicity of K. mikimotoi.

Major declines in NE Atlantic plankton contrast with more stable populations in the rapidly warming North Sea

Plankton form the base of marine food webs, making them important indicators of ecosystem status. Changes in the abundance of plankton functional groups, or lifeforms, can affect higher trophic levels and can indicate important shifts in ecosystem functioning. Here, we extend this knowledge by combining data from Continuous Plankton Recorder and fixed-point stations to provide the most comprehensive analysis of plankton time-series for the North-East Atlantic and North-West European shelf to date. We analysed 24 phytoplankton and zooplankton datasets from 15 research institutions to map 60-year abundance trends for 8 planktonic lifeforms. Most lifeforms decreased in abundance (e.g. dinoflagellates: -5 %, holoplankton: -7 % decade-1), except for meroplankton, which increased 12 % decade-1, reflecting widespread changes in large-scale and localised processes. K-means clustering of assessment units according to abundance trends revealed largely opposing trend direction between shelf and oceanic regions for most lifeforms, with North Sea areas characterised by increasing coastal abundance, while abundance decreased in North-East Atlantic areas. Individual taxa comprising each phytoplankton lifeform exhibited similar abundance trends, whereas taxa grouped within zooplankton lifeforms were more variable. These regional contrasts are counterintuitive, since the North Sea which has undergone major warming, changes in nutrients, and past fisheries perturbation has changed far less, from phytoplankton to fish larvae, as compared to the more slowly warming North-East Atlantic with lower nutrient supply and fishing pressure. This more remote oceanic region has shown a major and worrying decline in the traditional food web. Although the causal mechanisms remain unclear, declining abundance of key planktonic lifeforms in the North-East Atlantic, including diatoms and copepods, are a cause of major concern for the future of food webs and should provide a red flag to politicians and policymakers about the prioritisation of future management and adaptation measures required to ensure future sustainable use of the marine ecosystem.

Phytoplankton community structure and environmental factors during the outbreak of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish in Xisha Islands, South China Sea

The "larval starvation hypothesis" proposed that the growing frequency of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (CoTS) outbreaks could be attributed to increased availability of phytoplankton. However, comprehensive field investigation on the living environment of CoTS larvae and the availability of phytoplankton are still lacking. A cruise was conducted in June 2022 in Xisha Islands, South China Sea, to study the interaction between environmental conditions and phytoplankton communities during CoTS outbreak period. The average concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (0.05 ± 0.01 μmol L-1), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (0.66 ± 0.8 μmol L-1) and chlorophyll a (0.05 ± 0.05 μg L-1) suggested that phytoplankton may be limited for CoTS larvae in Xisha Islands. Microscopic observation and high-throughput sequencing were used to study the composition and structure of the phytoplankton communities. Bacillariophyta predominated in phytoplankton communities with the highest abundance and species richness. 29 dominant species, including 4 species with size-range preferred by CoTS larvae, were identified in Xisha Islands. The diversity index of all stations indicated a species-rich and structure-stable phytoplankton community in Xisha Islands during the period of CoTS outbreak, which may contribute to CoTS outbreak. These findings revealed the structure of phytoplankton community and environmental factors in the study area during CoTS outbreak, providing the groundwork for future research into the causes and processes of CoTS outbreak.

Phytoplankton Communities Miniaturization Driven by Extreme Weather in Subtropical Estuary under Climate Changes

Estuarine ecosystems are subject to extreme weather and climatic events, particularly global climate change. To characterize the effects of extreme weather, such as heavy precipitation and cold waves, on phytoplankton communities, four seasonal cruises were conducted in the subtropical Pearl River Estuary. Among the main phytoplankton taxa, small (pico- and nano-sized) phytoplankton accounted for approximately 50% and 70% in the upstream estuary. In spring, summer, and autumn, small-sized phytoplankton communities were dominated by Chlorophyta (20-45%), Ochrophyta (Bacillariophyceae; 25-40%), and Dinoflagellata (20-25%), associated with high phytoplankton network stability and river discharge. In winter, small phytoplankton communities were dominated by Cryptophyta (50%), Dinoflagellata (25%), and Ochrophyta (Bacillariophyceae; 10%), which were associated with low network stability and temperature. Low light and high nutrient conditions induced by large river discharge favored the growth of the smallest known brackish Chlorophyta, such as Ostreococcus tauri. Low temperatures provided a competitive advantage for the survival of the small-sized cryptophyte genus Teleaulax, especially in the upstream estuary during the 2020/2021 extreme cold wave period. Our findings highlight the impact of extreme weather induced by climatic events on the miniaturization of phytoplankton communities in subtropical estuaries by altering temperature, light availability, and nutrient dynamics.

Flow backward alleviated the river algal blooms

Mechanistic understanding and prediction of river algal blooms remain challenging. It is generally believed that these blooms are formed by the slowdown of water dynamics in tributaries due to the support of the main stream. However, few studies have investigated the impact of flow backward caused by the difference in water dynamics between the main stream and tributaries. Here, we focus on the eutrophication issue in the middle-lower reaches of the Han River, which is affected by the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP), the largest inter-basin water transfer project in Asia. We discover that the reversal of the Yangtze River water level could effectively alleviate the occurrence of Han River water blooms. The Yangtze River frequently back flows into the lower reaches of the Han River, with the probability of such events increasing as it nears the confluence (20 km from the Yangtze: 9.5 %, 10 km: 19.0 %, 8 km: 28.6 %). This flow backward carries nutrients that reduce the nitrogen to phosphorus ration (N:P), leading to a shift in the nutrient structure of the Han River. This change is concomitant with a significant decline in algae biomass (Chlorophyll-a = 11.19 µg·L-1 and algae density = 0.41×107 cells·L-1 under natural flow, Chlorophyll-a = 5.19 µg·L-1 and algae density = 0.18×107 cells·L-1 under flow backward), as well as a weakening of the correlation (R) between diatom density and chlorophyll-a concentration, i.e., R = 0.38 (p>0.05) under flow backward conditions versus R = 0.72 (p<0.01) under natural flow conditions. As phosphorus limitation typically suppresses algae growth, the correlation between diatom density and chlorophyll-a concentration can help to reveal the dominance of diatoms, with stronger correlations indicating greater diatom dominance. Consequently, our study provides evidence that the flow backward can alleviate river algal blooms by weakening the growth advantage of diatoms. This study could prove valuable in investigating the eutrophication mechanism within the complex hydrodynamic conditions of rivers. SYNOPSIS: Flow backward caused by the water level difference between the main streams and tributary alleviated the occurrence of river algal blooms in the confluence area.

Nitrogen addition effect overrides warming effect on dissolved CO2 and phytoplankton structure in shallow lakes

Shallow lakes are numerous in all climate zones, but our knowledge about their dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) response to future climate change and nutrient enrichment is rather limited. Here we performed a mesocosm experiment with four treatments to investigate how warming and nitrogen addition will impact the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and phytoplankton community individually and combined. We found that warming alone had no significant effect on pCO2, while nitrogen addition increased pCO2 significantly. The combined effects of nitrogen addition and warming on pCO2 level were prevalent, indicating that eutrophic shallow lakes would be double-jeopardized in the future climate. Warming and nitrogen addition together also showed to have changed the phytoplankton community structure, suggesting a potential shifting of biological system in shallow lakes under changing climate. These findings highlight the importance of reducing nitrogen pollution to shallow lake systems for sustainable development goal.

Transcriptomic Analysis of the Response of the Toxic Dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima to Phosphorous Limitation

Some dinoflagellates cause harmful algal blooms, releasing toxic secondary metabolites, to the detriment of marine ecosystems and human health. Phosphorus (P) is a limiting macronutrient for dinoflagellate growth in the ocean. Previous studies have been focused on the physiological response of dinoflagellates to ambient P changes. However, the whole-genome's molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, RNA-Seq was utilized to compare the global gene expression patterns of a marine diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxin-producing dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum lima, grown in inorganic P-replete and P-deficient conditions. A total of 148 unigenes were significantly up-regulated, and 30 unigenes were down-regulated under 1/4 P-limited conditions, while 2708 unigenes were significantly up-regulated, and 284 unigenes were down-regulated under 1/16 P-limited conditions. KEGG enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes shows that genes related to ribosomal proteins, glycolysis, fatty acid biosynthesis, phagosome formation, and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis are found to be up-regulated, while most of the genes related to photosynthesis are down-regulated. Further analysis shows that genes encoding P transporters, organic P utilization, and endocytosis are significantly up-regulated in the P-limited cells, indicating a strong ability of P. lima to utilize dissolved inorganic P as well as intracellular organic P. These transcriptomic data are further corroborated by biochemical and physiological analyses, which reveals that under P deficiency, cellular contents of starch, lipid, and toxin increase, while photosynthetic efficiency declines. Our results indicate that has P. lima evolved diverse strategies to acclimatize to low P environments. The accumulation of carbon sources and DSP toxins could provide protection for P. lima to cope with adverse environmental conditions.

Effects of phosphorus species and zinc stress on growth and physiology of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii

Human activities, including industrial and agricultural production, as well as domestic sewage discharge, have led to heavy metal pollution and eutrophication in coastal waters. This has caused a deficiency of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), but an excess dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) and high concentrations of zinc. However, the impact of high zinc stress and different phosphorus species on primary producers remains unclear. This study examined the impact of different phosphorus species (DIP and DOP) and high zinc stress (1.74 mg L^-1) on the growth and physiology of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii. The results showed that compared to the low zinc treatment (5 μg L^-1), high zinc stress significantly decreased the net growth of T. weissflogii, but the decline was weaker in the DOP group than in the DIP group. Based on changes in photosynthetic parameters and nutrient concentrations, the study suggests that the growth inhibition of T. weissflogii under high zinc stress was likely due to an increase in cell death caused by zinc toxicity, rather than a decrease in cell growth caused by photosynthesis damage. Nonetheless, T. weissflogii was able to reduce zinc toxicity by antioxidant reactions through enhancing activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase and by cationic complexation through enhancing extracellular polymeric substances, particularly when DOP served as the phosphorus source. Furthermore, DOP had a unique detoxification mechanism by producing marine humic acid, which is conducive to complexing metal cations. These results provide valuable insights into the response of phytoplankton to environmental changes in coastal oceans, particularly the effects of high zinc stress and different phosphorus species on primary producers.

Ecosystem anthropogenic enrichments enhance Chroococcus abundance and suppress Anabaena during cyanobacterial-dominated spring blooms in the Pengxi River, Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Taxa-specific responses to the increasing anthropogenic eutrophication offer promising insights for mitigating harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwaters. The present study evaluated the HABs species dynamics in response to the ecosystem anthropogenic enrichment during cyanobacterial-dominated spring HABs in the Pengxi River, Three Gorges Reservoir, China. Results show significant cyanobacterial dominance with a relative abundance (RA = 76.54 %). The ecosystem enrichments triggered shifts in the HABs community structure from Anabaena to Chroococcus, especially in the culture involving iron (Fe) addition (RA = 66.16 %). While P-alone enrichment caused a dramatic increase in the aggregate cell density (2.45 × 10⁸ cells L^-1), the multiple enrichment (NPFe) led to maximum biomass production (as chl-a = 39.62 ± 2.33 μgL^-1), indicating that nutrient in conjunction with the HABs taxonomic characteristics e.g., tendency to possess high cell pigment contents rather than cell density can potentially determine massive biomass accumulations during HABs. The stimulation of growth as biomass production demonstrated by both P-alone and the multiple enrichments, NPFe indicates that although P exclusive control is feasible in the Pengxi ecosystem, it can only guarantee a short-term reduction in HABs magnitude and duration, thus a lasting HABs mitigation measure must consider a policy recommendation involving multiple nutrient management, especially N and P dual control strategy. The present study would adequately complement the concerted effort in developing a rational predictive framework for freshwater eutrophication management and HABs mitigations in the TGR and elsewhere with similar anthropogenic stressors.

Transcriptome analysis of two bloom-forming Prorocentrum species reveals physiological changes related to light and temperature

Temperature and light substantially influence red tide succession. However, it remains unclear whether the molecular mechanisms differ among species. In this study, we measured the variation in the physiological parameters of growth and pigments and transcriptional levels of two bloom-forming dinoflagellates, namely Prorocentrum micans and P. cordatum. This was undertaken in four treatments that represented two factorial temperature combinations (LT: 20 °C, HT: 28 °C) and light conditions (LL: 50 µmol photons m^-2 s^-1, HL: 400 µmol photons m^-2 s^-1) for 7-day batch culture. Growth under high temperature and high light (HTHL) was the fastest, while growth under high temperature and low light (HTLL) was the slowest. The pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoids) decreased significantly in all high light (HL) treatments, but not in high temperature (HT) treatments. HL alleviated the low light-caused photolimitation and enhanced the growth of both species at low temperatures. However, HT inhibited the growth of both species by inducing oxidative stress under low light conditions. HL mitigated the HT-induced stress on growth in both species by upregulating photosynthesis, antioxidase activity, protein folding, and degradation. The cells of P. micans were more sensitive to HT and HL than those of P. cordatum. This study deepens our understanding of the species-specific mechanism of dinoflagellates at the transcriptomic level, adapting to the future ocean changes including higher solar radiation and higher temperatures in the upper mixed layer.

Trends in nutrients in the Changjiang River

Better documentation and understanding of long-term temporal dynamics of nutrients in watersheds are necessary to support effective water quality management. We examined the hypothesis that the recent management of fertilizer use and pollution control in the Changjiang River Basin could govern the fluxes of nutrients from the river to the sea. Results based on historical data since 1962 and surveys in recent years show that concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) in the mid- and downstream reaches were higher than those in the upper reaches due to intensive anthropogenic activities, while dissolved silicate (DSi) was distributed evenly from the up- to downstream reaches. Fluxes of DIN and DIP increased rapidly, and DSi declined during the 1962-1980 and 1980-2000. After the 2000s, concentrations and fluxes of DIN and DSi remained almost unchanged; those of DIP remained stable until the 2010s and slightly decreased afterward. The decline in fertilizer use explains 45 % of the variance in the decline of DIP flux, followed by pollution control, groundwater and water discharge. As a result, the molar ratio of DIN:DIP, DSi:DIP and ammonia:nitrate varied largely during 1962-2020, and the excess DIN relative to DIP and DSi lead to increased limitations of silicon and phosphorus. A turning point probably occurred for nutrient fluxes in the Changjiang River in the 2010s, with the pattern of DIN from continuous increase to stability and DIP from increase to decrease. This decline in phosphorus in the Changjiang River has many similarities with the rivers worldwide. The continued basin nutrient management is likely to have a major influence on river nutrient delivery and therefore may control coastal nutrient budget and ecosystem stability.

Harmful cyanobacteria-diatom/dinoflagellate blooms and their cyanotoxins in freshwaters: A nonnegligible chronic health and ecological hazard

Human and ecological health depends on the vitality of freshwater systems, but these are increasingly threatened by cyanotoxins released from harmful algal blooms (HABs). Periodic cyanotoxin production, although undesirable, may be tolerable when there is enough time for cyanotoxins to degrade and dissipate in the environment, but the year-round presence of these toxins will be a chronic health for humans and ecosystems. The purpose of this critical review is to document the seasonal shifts of algal species and their ecophysiological acclimatation to dynamic environmental conditions. We discuss how these conditions will create successive occurrences of algal blooms and the release of cyanotoxins into freshwater. We first review the most common cyanotoxins, and evaluate the multiple ecological roles and physiological functions of these toxins for algae. Then, the annual recurring patterns HABs are considered in the context of global change, which demonstrates the capacity for algal blooms to shift from seasonal to year-round growth regimes that are driven by abiotic and biotic factors, leading to chronic loading of freshwaters with cyanotoxins. At last, we illustrate the impacts of HABs on the environment by compiling four health issues and four ecology issues emanating from their presence in the that covers atmosphere, aquatic ecosystems and terrestrial ecosystems. Our study highlights the annual patterns of algal blooms, and proposes that a "perfect storm" of events is lurking that will cause the 'seasonal toxicity' to become a full-blown, 'chronic toxicity' in the context of the deterioration of HABs, highlighting a non-negligible chronic health and ecological hazard.

Evaluation of environmental impact of red tide around Pearl River Estuary, Guangdong, China

This paper presents a case study of red tide hazards around the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Red tide hazards, meteorological data, and seawater monitoring data were collected from 1996 to 2020 at different locations around the PRE to investigate the internal and external factors influencing the occurrence of red tides. The enhancement of the assessment of estuarine trophic status (ASSETS) method enables us to evaluate the effects of meteorological factors and seawater eutrophication status on the red tide risk level. Using ASSETS, we established a framework for red tide risk assessment of the Pearl River Estuary. We analysed the external and internal factors causing the red tide based on meteorological data and seawater monitoring data in the PRE. The results show that the temperature was higher than the annual monthly average temperature of 1.265 °C, and east and north winds at velocities of 3-4 m/s could result in the formation of red tides. However, precipitation inhibits the formation of the red tide in PRE.

Hindcasting harmful algal bloom risk due to land-based nutrient pollution in the Eastern Chinese coastal seas

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been increasing in frequency, areal extent and duration due to the large increase in nutrient inputs from land-based sources to coastal seas, and cause significant economic losses. In this study, we used the "watershed-coast-continuum" concept to explore the effects of land-based nutrient pollution on HAB development in the Eastern Chinese coastal seas (ECCS). Results from the coupling of a watershed nutrient model and a coast hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model show that between the 1980s and 2000s, the risk of diatom blooms and dinoflagellate blooms increased by 158% and 127%, respectively. The spatial expansion of HAB risk caused by dinoflagellates is larger than that of diatoms. The simulated suitability of the habitat for bloom of Aureococcus anophagefferens, a pico-plankton of non-diatom or dinoflagellate, in the Bohai Sea is consistent with observations spatially and temporally. To halt further nutrient accumulation in the ECCS, reductions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) (16%) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) (33%) loading are required. To improve the situation of distorted DIN:DIP ratios, even larger reductions of DIN are required, especially in the Bohai Sea. Our approach is a feasible way to predict the risk of HABs under the pressure of increasing anthropogenic nutrient pollution in coastal waters.

Small Mediterranean coastal Lagoons Under Threat: Hydro-ecological Disturbances and Local Anthropogenic Pressures (Size Matters)

Mediterranean coastal lagoons are affected by multiple threats (demographic pressures, eutrophication, climate change) expected to increase in the future and impact the ecosystem services provided. Conservation norms and scientific studies usually focus on large lagoons (> 0.5 km2) due to their economic importance, while they ignore smaller lagoons. These are poorly understood and often unprotected, despite their prevalence within the Mediterranean region and their importance. Qualitative and quantitative characterisation of small lagoons, in terms of functioning and sensitivity to global and local changes, are needed to develop appropriate management strategies. For this purpose, this work provides the first inventory of all Corsican lagoons and has investigated three of them of small size (Arasu, Santa Giulia, Balistra), characterised by contrasting anthropogenic contexts (highly modified/disturbed, medium disturbance, quasi-pristine). At the regional level, 91 of the 95 lagoons identified are < 0.5 km2, making Corsica a good example for the study of small Mediterranean lagoons. The three case studies showed differences in their seasonal biogeochemical cycles and phytoplankton communities (biomass, diversity, photosynthetic efficiency). Arasu and Santa Giulia lagoons showed an increase in watershed urbanisation (+ 12% and + 6% in 30 years), high phytoplankton biomass, low diversity and blooms of potentially harmful dinoflagellates. Conversely, Balistra lagoon showed a good status overall, but some anthropogenic pollution sources within its watershed. This study demonstrates the importance of small lagoons at regional and Mediterranean scale, and provides knowledge on studied local sites but also potential applications elsewhere. The importance of an integrated approach considering lagoons within their adjacent connected systems (watershed and sea) and anthropogenic contexts is highlighted.

Phytoplankton biomass dynamics with diffuse terrestrial nutrients pollution discharge into bay

Diffuse terrestrial pollution in bay area has important ecological impacts on coastal ecosystems. This study investigated spatiotemporal changes in N, P, and chlorophyll a (Chla) in the Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) and phytoplankton biomass dynamics under terrestrial nutrients loading. The results from SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model demonstrated that the annual average total N (TN) and total P (TP) loading from main rivers were 3626.3 t and 335.6 t, respectively, and were affected by land use type, precipitation, and temperature. Chla value interpreted by remote sensing showed a decrease from nearshore to the far shore. Changes in Chla concentration were usually "dual-cycle" in February and September, but explosive growth of Enteromorpha can cause multiple peaks. TN concentration in the bay was more susceptible to the impact of terrestrial input than TP. Phytoplankton biomass had a stronger correlation with P than with N in JZB. Enteromorpha contributing 4.05% of the phytoplankton biomass played a major role in phytoplankton biomass variability and responded most to nutrients loadings reduction. Under setting 5 m filter strip scenario, the Enteromorpha biomass removal efficiency could reach 35.25%. Furthermore, the findings of this study provide insights for sea-land integration and pollution prevention and control in urbanised bays.

Biodiversity and Interannual Variation of Harmful Algal Bloom Species in the Coastal Sea of Qinhuangdao, China

For the frequent occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Qinhuangdao coastal sea (QCS) of the Bohai Sea in summer, we tested the hypothesis that high-biodiversity HAB species exist in the area, and a series of censuses of HAB species were conducted in the QCS in the summers of 2014-2019. Through morphological identification, we found 100 algae species representing 42 genera in 3 phytoplankton phyla in this study, among which Bacillariophyta was the most dominant phylum. We also found that the population density of Dinoflagellata increased from 2016 to 2019. In total, 59 HAB species were annotated in this study, including 39 of Bacillariophyta, 18 of Dinoflagellata and 2 of Ochrophyta, of which 13 HAB species were reported in the Bohai Sea for the first time, and most HAB species were widely distributed in the QCS in summer. Notably, four dominant HAB species displayed unique temporal and spatial distribution characteristics, while their distribution ranges and population densities increased from 2014 to 2019. The distributions of five environmental factors were different in the QCS, while the temperature, salinity, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen might be the key environmental factors influencing the distribution of dominant HAB species in the summer. In conclusion, this study provides a detailed evaluation of phytoplankton diversity and interannual variation in the QCS. The existence of a high level of biodiversity of algal bloom species suggests the need for long-term monitoring in order to further study and prevent potential HABs.

Effect of dissolved organic nutrients on the bloom of Prorocentrum donghaiense in the East China Sea coastal waters

Prorocentrum donghaiense blooms occur annually in the East China Sea coastal waters, degrading ecosystem functions and impeding economic development. Dissolved organic nitrogen and phosphorus (DON and DOP) are the main components in the marine nutrient pools and are closely related to harmful algal blooms. From April to June 2019, a survey was conducted along the East China Sea coast (Sansha and Lianjiang counties) to investigate the relationship between dissolved organic nutrients and P. donghaiense bloom. Our findings showed that dinoflagellates dominated the phytoplankton community, and dissolved organic nutrients were the major factors influencing community structure during the P. donghaiense bloom. Redundancy analysis indicated that P. donghaiense abundance was primarily affected by DON in the Sansha area while it was primarily affected by DON and DOP in the Lianjiang area. Correlation analysis also confirmed a strong positive correlation between dissolved organic nutrients and P. donghaiense abundance both in the Sansha and Lianjiang coastal areas (p < 0.001). Furthermore, a culture experiment was carried out during the bloom to further investigate the effect of dissolved organic nutrients on the phytoplankton community structure. After 10 days of culture, dinoflagellates' relative abundance decreased from 97.1% to 28.2% in the inorganic treatment, whereas dinoflagellates continued to dominate the phytoplankton community in the organic treatment (76.9%). As a result, we propose that dissolved organic nutrients are responsible for the P. donghaiense bloom outbreak and promote the phytoplankton community shift from diatoms to dinoflagellates.

Ocean acidification and warming significantly affect coastal eutrophication and organic pollution: A case study in the Bohai Sea

Most coastal ecosystems are faced with novel challenges associated with human activities and climate change such as ocean acidification, warming, eutrophication, and organic pollution. However, data on the independent or combined effects of ocean acidification and warming on coastal eutrophication and organic pollution at present are relatively limited. Here, we applied the generalized additive models (GAMs) to explore the dynamics of coastal eutrophication and organic pollution in response to future climate change in the Bohai Sea. The GAMs reflected the fact that acidification alone favors eutrophication and organic pollution, while warming alone inhibits these two variables. Differently, the interactions between acidification and warming in the future may further exacerbate the organic pollution but may mitigate the progress of eutrophication. These different responses of eutrophication and organic pollution to acidification and warming may be attributed to algae growth and microbial respiration, as well as some physical processes such as stratification.

Different responses of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities to current changing coastal environments

Marine plankton are faced with novel challenges associated with environmental changes such as ocean acidification, warming, and eutrophication. However, data on the effects of simultaneous environmental changes on complex natural communities in coastal ecosystems are relatively limited. Here we made a systematic analysis of biological and environmental parameters in the Bohai Sea over the past three years to suggest that plankton communities responded differently to current changing coastal environments, with the increase of phytoplankton and the decrease of zooplankton. These different changes of phyto- and zooplankton potentially resulted from the fact that both the effect of acidification as a result of pH decline and the effect of warming as a consequence of increasing temperature favored phytoplankton over zooplankton at present. Furthermore, water eutrophication and salinity as well as heavy metals Hg, Zn, and As had more or less diverse consequences for the dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Differently, with ongoing climate change, we also revealed that both phytoplankton and zooplankton would decrease in the future under the influence of interactions between acidification and warming.

Exploring the dynamics of marine picophytoplankton among the Yellow Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean: The importance of temperature and nitrogen

Marine picophytoplankton (<2 μm) are the most abundant photosynthetic group and also important contributors to global primary production. However, it is still constrained to incorporate picophytoplankton into dynamic ecosystem models, as a result of our limited understanding of their global distribution and abundance. Here, we applied a large dataset consisted of 1817 in situ observations from the Yellow Sea, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean to suggest that picophytoplankton abundance and distribution had a large variability among the three distinct regions. Based on the correlation analysis, aggregated boosted tree analysis, and generalized additive model, we proposed that water temperature and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) were key determinants in driving the large-scale variability of marine picophytoplankton. For example, we revealed that high temperature and low N would stimulate the growth of Prochlorococcus. Therefore, these results could provide some insights into the various environmental factors which affect the dynamics of picophytoplankton, as well as the dynamic ecosystem models.

Why do red tides occur frequently in some oligotrophic waters? Analysis of red tide evolution history in Mirs Bay, China and its implications

The process and management of red tide in oligotrophic waters are poorly understood as most studies on red tide were focused on eutrophic areas. In this study, 404 red tide events together with the historical water quality dynamics during 1991-2020 were investigated in an anthropogenically influenced bay in China - Mirs Bay, whose most region is oligotrophic except small inshore areas. Red tides of oligotrophic offshore accounted for 20 % of all. With the effective governmental management on inshore areas, concentration of PO₄ and DIN has been decreased to a low level (PO₄ <0.01 mg/L while DIN <0.1 mg/L) in the bay since about 2000. However, the reduction of nutrients was still accompanied by the frequent outbreaks of red tides, as well as a shift of dominant algae from diatoms to dinoflagellates, which might be due to the unbalanced nutrient reduction, such as N:P ratio fluctuation and organic nutrient increase. This shift might trigger more red tide events and even some super ones (long-duration or large-scale) in oligotrophic areas. Detailed analysis on red tide events combined with model simulation proved that the outbreak of red tide in Mirs Bay was caused by the joint contribution of nutrients and hydrodynamics. Nutrients of inshore area supported the red tides there, and with the help of physical conditions, red tides inshore could be transferred to offshore areas and then were likely to bloom again or be preyed to support blooms of other organisms. This study acknowledged that the reduction of both N and P either inorganic or organic nutrients was essential to control red tides, even in oligotrophic waters, but a balanced strategy considering the dual reduction of both nitrogen and phosphorus was of pivotal role to restore the health of coastal water systems disturbed by human.

Multi-Omics Profiling Reveals Resource Allocation and Acclimation Strategies to Temperature Changes in a Marine Dinoflagellate

Temperature is a critical environmental factor that affects the cell growth of dinoflagellates and bloom formation. To date, the molecular mechanisms underlying the physiological responses to temperature variations are poorly understood. Here, we applied quantitative proteomic and untargeted metabolomic approaches to investigate protein and metabolite expression profiles of a bloom-forming dinoflagellate Prorocentrum shikokuense at different temperatures. Of the four temperatures (19, 22, 25, and 28°C) investigated, P. shikokuense at 25°C exhibited the maximal cell growth rate and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) value. The levels of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) decreased with increasing temperature, while the POC/PON ratio increased and peaked at 25°C. Proteomic analysis showed proteins related to photoreaction, light harvesting, and protein homeostasis were highly expressed at 28°C when cells were under moderate heat stress. Metabolomic analysis further confirmed reallocated amino acids and soluble sugars at this temperature. Both omic analyses showed glutathione metabolism that scavenges the excess reactive oxygen species, and transcription and lipid biosynthesis that compensate for the low translation efficiency and plasma membrane fluidity were largely upregulated at suboptimal temperature. Higher accumulations of glutathione, glutarate semialdehyde, and 5-KETE at 19°C implied their important roles in low-temperature acclimation. The strikingly active nitrate reduction and nitrogen flux into asparagine, glutamine, and aspartic acid at 19°C indicated these three amino acids may serve as nitrogen storage pools and help cells cope with low temperature. Our study provides insights into the effects of temperature on dinoflagellate resource allocation and advances our knowledge of dinoflagellate bloom formation in marine environments. IMPORTANCE Marine phytoplankton is one of the most important nodes in global biogeochemical cycle. Deciphering temperature-associated marine phytoplankton cell stoichiometric changes and the underlying molecular mechanisms are therefore of great ecological concerns. However, knowledge of how phytoplankton adjust the cell stoichiometry to sustain growth under temperature changes is still lacking. This study investigates the variations of protein and metabolite profiles in a marine dinoflagellate across temperatures at which the field blooms usually occur and highlights the temperature-dependent molecular traits and key metabolites that may be associated with rapid cell growth and temperature stress acclimation.

Atmospheric wet deposition serves as an important nutrient supply for coastal ecosystems and fishery resources: Insights from a mariculture area in North China

To determine the ecological effects of atmospheric wet deposition of dissolved nutrients on the coastal waters around the Yangma Island, rain and snow samples were collected and analyzed at a shore-based site for one year. The wet deposition fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus (DIN and DIP) and dissolved organic nitrogen and phosphorus were 69.2, 0.136, 13.3 and 0.143 mmol m^-2 a^-1, respectively. In summer, the new production fueled by wet deposition accounted for 19.3 % of that in seawater and 16.4 % of the amount of particulate organic carbon ingested by the scallops cultivated in the study area, indicating the potential contribution of wet deposition to fishery resources. Meanwhile, precipitation increased the seasonal average DIN/DIP ratios in surface seawater by 17.7 %, 16.3 %, 23.4 % and 6.5 % in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively, which could change the composition of ecological community and cause obvious negative impact on the ecosystem and mariculture.

Interannual and Decadal Changes in Harmful Algal Blooms in the Coastal Waters of Fujian, China

The temporal and spatial variability of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters of Fujian were analyzed at interannual and decadal scales based on recorded HAB events collected from 1956 to 2019. The number and impact area of HABs exhibited little change from 1959 to the 1990s, sharply increased from the 1990s to 2000s, and decreased from the 2000s to 2010s. The highest number and greatest coverage of blooms occurred in the 2000s. The proportion of HABs caused by dinoflagellates increased, while the proportion caused by diatoms decreased from the 2000s to the 2010s. Toxic HAB events caused by Karenia mikimotoi increased in frequency and spatial coverage in the 2010s, especially on the central Fujian coast. Increasing concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and dissolved inorganic phosphorus have been essential for increasing HAB occurrences since the 1980s. The combined effects of eutrophication and climate change have been suggested to be important reasons for long-term changes in HABs. Knowledge of the change patterns in and the mechanisms of HABs gained in this study will extend the current understanding of HABs along the Fujian coast and support future studies on HAB monitoring, early warning, prevention, and management.

Antagonistic and synergistic effects of warming and microplastics on microalgae: Case study of the red tide species Prorocentrum donghaiense

Bibliometric network analysis has revealed that the widespread distribution of microplastics (MPs) has detrimental effects on marine organisms; however, the combined effects of MPs and climate change (e.g., warming) is not well understood. In this study, Prorocentrum donghaiense, a typical red tide species in the East China Sea, was exposed to different MP concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg L^-1) and temperatures (16, 22, and 28 °C) for 7 days to investigate the combined effects of MPs and simulated ocean warming by measuring different physiological parameters, such as cell growth, pigment contents (chlorophyll a and carotenoid), relative electron transfer rate (rETR), reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The results demonstrated that MPs significantly decreased cell growth, pigment contents, and rETR_max, but increased the MDA, ROS, and SOD levels for all MP treatments at low temperature (16 °C). However, high temperatures (22 and 28 °C) increased the pigment contents and rETR_max, but decreased the SOD and MDA levels. Positive and negative effects of high temperatures (22 or 28 °C) were observed at low (1 and 5 mg L^-1) and high MP (10 mg L^-1) concentrations, respectively, indicating the antagonistic and synergistic effects of combined warming and MP pollution. These results imply that the effects of MPs on microalgae will likely not be substantial in future warming scenarios if MP concentrations are controlled at a certain level. These findings expand the current knowledge of microalgae in response to increasing MP pollution in future warming scenarios.

Evolution of harmful algal blooms in the East China Sea under eutrophication and warming scenarios

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) worldwide are experiencing obvious changes under the combined impacts of global warming, eutrophication, and other driving forces. In the East China Sea (ECS), large-scale blooms caused by dinoflagellates occurred since 2000 and there has been an apparent shift of bloom-causative microalgae from diatoms to dinoflagellates. To predict the future evolution of HABs in this region, a model was developed based on the competition between diatoms and dinoflagellates, which would serve to reproduce the seasonal succession of microalgal blooms driven by multiple environmental factors. The evolution features of HABs were then projected under different scenarios of eutrophication and global warming. Under the 'business as usual' scenario, dinoflagellate blooms are expected to become more frequent with higher peak biomass concentrations over the next 30 years. Changes in nutrient composition of the Changjiang riverine discharge may largely give rise to this phenomenon, and accelerated warming associated with climate change may result in earlier occurrence of dinoflagellate blooms. To prevent further intensification of dinoflagellate blooms, efforts could be made to reduce nitrogen inputs and maintain or even increase silicate inputs from the Changjiang river.

Eutrophication status assessment in the Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea: Further evidence for the ecosystem degradation

Laizhou Bay is plagued by many environmental problems (e.g., acidification and eutrophication) that are likely to increase in the coming decades along with social and demographic trends. We thus conducted 12 cruises from July 2019 to December 2021 in the Laizhou Bay to evaluate the potential influences of human activities on its eutrophication status. The results showed that the parameters of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and oxygen (DO) exceeded the water quality standard in some cases during the past 3 years, suggesting DIN and DO were the crucial factors controlling water quality in the bay. Meanwhile, DIN was identified as a major pollutant in the region, and played an important role in driving the phytoplankton dynamics. Furthermore, with the increases in human-related nutrient inputs (especially DIN), the bay environment reached the mild eutrophication level and was probably at risk from excessive nutrient loads at present, further evidencing the ecosystem degradation.

Effects of Temperature on Transparent Exopolymer Particle Production and Organic Carbon Allocation of Four Marine Phytoplankton Species

Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) are sticky polymeric substances that are commonly found in the periphery of microbial cells or colonies. They can naturally flocculate smaller suspended particles into larger aggregates and thus play a crucial role in the biological pump and the global carbon cycle. Phytoplankton are the major contributors to marine TEP production, whereas the way TEP production interacts with abiotic factors at the species level is generally unknown but critical for estimating carbon fluxes. In this study, the effects of temperature on TEP production and carbon allocation were studied in two representative diatom species (Nitzschia closterium and Chaetoceros affinis) and two model dinoflagellate species (Prorocentrum micans and Scrippisella trichoidea). The results showed that temperature had a significant impact on TEP production in all species. First, increased temperature promoted the TEP production of all four species. Second, elevated temperature affected the carbon pool allocation, with enhanced dissolved organic carbon (DOC) exudation in the form of TEP in all species. The TEP-C/DOC percentages of N. closterium and P. micans were 93.42 ± 5.88% and 82.03 ± 21.36% at the highest temperature (24 °C), respectively, which was approximately two to five times higher than those percentages at 16 °C. In contrast, TEP’s contribution to the POC pool is lower than that to the DOC pool, ranging from 6.74 ± 0.79% to 28.31 ± 1.79% for all species. Moreover, phytoplankton TEP production may be related to cellular size and physiology. The TEP content produced by the smallest N. closterium (218.96 ± 15.04 fg Xeq./μm3) was ~5 times higher compared to P. micans, S. trichoidea, or C. affinis. In conclusion, TEP production is temperature sensitive and species specific, which should be taken into consideration the regarding TEP-mediated oceanic carbon cycle, particularly in the context of global warming.

The large-scale spatial patterns of ecological networks between phytoplankton and zooplankton in coastal marine ecosystems

Although autotrophic phytoplankton and heterotrophic zooplankton both play important roles in the food web of marine ecosystem, their comprehensive interactions and spatial patterns at continental scale remain poorly studied. Here, we collected 251 seawater samples along 13,000 km of Chinese coastline, and microscopically investigated the latitudinal gradients of planktonic diversities. In total, 307 phytoplanktonic and 311 zooplanktonic species were visually identified. Using the newly developed Inter-Domain Ecological Networks (IDENs) approach, the phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction networks were constructed. We found that the phyto-zooplankton network structure was varied across three regions, more complex and numerous connections along the southern coast than in the north. In addition, some particular associations between zooplanktonic and phytoplanktonic groups were found to be localized in specific regions. Furthermore, the seawater temperature and salinity were the major driving force for shaping planktonic interaction networks. These results provide a deeper understanding of planktonic biogeography and phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction patterns.

Phytoplankton Communities and Their Relationship with Environmental Factors in the Waters around Macau

An investigation of the waters around Macau collected 43 phytoplankton species belonging to 29 genera and 5 phyla, including 32 species from 22 genera of Bacillariophyta, 7 species from 3 genera of Pyrrophyta, 2 species from 2 genera of Cyanophyta, and 1 genus and 1 species from both Euglenophyta and Chromophyta. The dominant phytoplankton species in the study areas were Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve, Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen, Thalassiothrix frauenfeidii Grunow, and Thalassionema nitzschioides Grunow. The phytoplankton abundance in the waters around Macau was between 46,607.14 and 1,355,000 cells/m3, with the highest abundance noted in station S8. Diatoms were the main contributor to phytoplankton abundance in station S8, accounting for 96.2% of the total abundance. Station S4 exhibited the lowest phytoplankton abundance of 46,607.1 cells/m3, with diatoms and Chromophytaaccounting for 58.6% and 29.9% of the total phytoplankton abundance, respectively. Biodiversity analysis results showed that the phytoplankton richness index was 1.18−3.61, the uniformity index was 0.24−0.78, and the Shannon−Wiener index was 0.94−3.41. Correlation analysis revealed that ammonia nitrogen was significantly negatively correlated with the phytoplankton richness, uniformity, and Shannon−Wiener indices. Nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, inorganic nitrogen, salinity, turbidity, and pH were positively correlated with the phytoplankton evenness index and Shannon−Wiener index. Cluster and non-metric multidimensional scaling analyses demonstrated that the phytoplankton community structure in the waters around Macau could be divided into three groups, with A. granulata, S. costatum, T. frauenfeidii, T. nitzschioides, Chaetoceros curvisetus Cleve, and Chaetoceros diadema (Ehrenberg) Gran being predominant in different grouping communities (contribution% > 10%). Biota-Environment Stepwise Analysis (BIOENV) showed a significant correlation between the phytoplankton community and nitrite nitrogen content in the waters around Macau (correlation: 0.5544, Mantel test: statistic 0.4196, p = 0.009), which was consistent with the results of the canonical correspondence analysis.

Comparative Analysis of Total and Size-Fractionated Chlorophyll a in the Yellow Sea and Western Pacific

Measurements of different size-fractionated chlorophyll a concentrations (Chl a) of phytoplankton assemblages in situ are vital for advancing our understanding of the phytoplankton size structure and thus the marine biogeochemical cycle. In the present study, we thus made a comparative analysis of total and size-fractionated Chl a in the Yellow Sea (YS) and Western Pacific (WP). Our results suggest that the total Chl a was highly variable in the YS (averaging ~1.02 μg L⁻¹) and was generally 3–4-fold more than that in the WP (averaging ~0.30 μg L⁻¹). The pico-sized Chl a had a significant contribution to total Chl a in the WP (range 75–88%), while the average contributions of the nano-sized and pico-sized Chl a to total Chl a in the YS were 47 and 38%, respectively, suggesting that a majority of the total Chl a in the YS was associated with nano- and picophytoplankton. Moreover, we applied the generalized additive models (GAMs) to explore the relationships between the total Chl a and that contained in each of the three size classes. These GAMs relationships suggested a continuum from picophytoplankton dominated waters to large phytoplankton (cells> 2 μm) domination with increasing Chl a. Finally, we made a comparison of the total Chl a obtained with GF/F filters and that measured from size-fractionated filtration and revealed that their corresponding concentrations are in good agreement, indicating the size-fractionated filtration had no effect on total Chl a determination.

The early assessment of harmful algal bloom risk in the East China Sea

The East China Sea (ECS) is seriously impacted by harmful algal blooms (HABs). Therefore, early assessments of HAB risk in this area are extremely important. Using long-term historical HAB observation data and satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SSTs), we found that the annual number of HAB events was positively correlated with the mean March SST and negatively correlated with the SST change rate from March to July in nearshore waters (< 50 m). A simple method of HAB risk assessment was therefore proposed based on either March SST (threshold: 13 °C) or SST change rate (threshold: 3.6 °C/month). Validation against a k-means classification scheme indicated that the overall accuracy based on the March SST threshold was 85%, with a kappa coefficient of 0.69. The SST-based method facilitates the assessment of HAB risk in the ECS 1-2 months in advance, thus helping to reduce the damage caused by HABs.
