Abstract
INTRODUCTION Placental abruption is a serious complication of pregnancy, and smoking is a well-known risk factor thereof. However, evaluations of the effects of smoking mostly rely on self-reported questionnaires, resulting in incorrect representation of smoke exposure owing to incorrect reporting and missing data on passive smoking. Cotinine is a major nicotine metabolite and a sensitive biomarker in smokers. However, to date, there have been no reports on the relationship between urinary cotinine levels and onset of placental abruption. Hence, this study aimed to compare smoking status assessed using self-reports and urinary cotinine levels with placental abruption. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyzed data from the largest nationwide Japanese birth cohort study conducted between January 2011 and March 2014. Women with multiple pregnancies and insufficient data were excluded, leaving 82,637 women eligible for the study. Participants were classified as nonsmokers (<0.31 µg/gCr), passive smokers (0.31-36.7 µg/gCr), or active smokers (≥36.8 µg/gCr) based on comparable cutoffs for urinary cotinine levels, as reported previously. Participants were also classified as never-smokers, quitting before pregnancy, quitting after pregnancy, or current smokers according to a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association of urinary cotinine levels and self-reported smoking status with placental abruption. RESULTS Among 82,637 participants (mean age: 31.3 years), 346 (0.42%) had placental abruption. Based on urinary cotinine-assessed smoking status, active smokers had a higher incidence of placental abruption (aOR, 1.70; 95% Cl, 1.20-2.40) than nonsmokers. In contrast, based on self-reports, there was no significant difference between current smokers and never-smokers after adjusting for established confounding factors (aOR, 1.54; 95% CI, 0.98-2.36). CONCLUSIONS Elevated urinary cotinine levels during pregnancy were significantly associated with an increased risk of placental abruption, whereas self-reported smoking status was not. Urinary cotinine levels are a more accurate and clinically reliable biomarker to assess smoking-related risks during pregnancy than self-reported smoking status. Future research should explore the relationship between urinary cotinine levels and other obstetric complications to validate its utility as a comprehensive pregnancy biomarker.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thirdhand smoke (THS) was first identified by Graham and colleagues in 1953, and nicotine was detected in household dust from smokers in 1991. Thirdhand smoke (THS) consists of toxic nicotine residues that persist on surfaces long after tobacco use, posing a significant public health concern. Individuals can be exposed to thirdhand smoke through skin contact or inhalation, particularly affecting children and infants who are most vulnerable to tobacco contaminants. This review aims to assess the effectiveness of different methods for measuring nicotine THS residues to evaluate their accuracy across various age groups. METHODS Relevant literature was sourced from databases including ProQuest (Ovid), Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. The timeframe for included studies ranged the last 25 years, from 1999 to 2024. Eligible participants consisted of human populations exposed to thirdhand smoke residue. For this review, the animal studies were excluded. There were no restrictions regarding age, sex, ethnicity, or nationality for participant selection. For data management and screening, the Covidence systematic tool was utilized. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers. This protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024574140). RESULTS A total of 394 studies were retrieved from 5 databases for the initial screening. A total of 67 studies included in full-text screening, and ultimately, 36 studies were selected for full review. The studies were classified into four categories based on assessment methods: (1) analysis of human secretions, including salivary or urinary tests; (2) cellular analysis utilizing cellulose substrates or paper-based materials; (3) environmental assessments, which examined outdoor surfaces, vehicles, residential spaces, and fabrics; and (4) epidemiological assessments, employing surveys or questionnaires. Non-invasive matrices such as saliva and urine were frequently utilized for biomarker analysis. The studies collectively investigated nicotine and its metabolites in human biological samples, environmental surface contamination, and thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure. They employed a diverse range of assessment tools including surveys, machine learning technique, and cellulose-based substrates. CONCLUSIONS This review identified various selective testing methods for detecting thirdhand smoke (THS) from nicotine. These assessment methods have advantages and disadvantages and underscores the need for further research. Improving these techniques for assessment of THS could significantly improve our understanding of the impact THS has on human health.

Abstract
Thirdhand smoke (THS), a residual cigarette smoke still remaining in indoor environment long after active smoking has ceased, has aroused more and more people's attention on health. However, the impact of THS exposure on the male reproductive system, particularly in in-vivo study, remain unclear. Thus, this study aims to investigate the adverse effects of 1-(N-methyl-N-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridinyl)-4-butanal (NNA), a special component in THS, on testis. Herein, adult ICR mice were orally administered diluted dimethylsulfoxide (control), 0.075 μg/kg and 0.15 μg/kg NNA for 10 weeks. The findings revealed that NNA exposure, especially in 0.15 μg/kg dosage, significantly reduced the epithelium height and tubular area within the testis. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that NNA exposure interfered with the expression of genes associated with oxygen transport and oxygen binding processes, such as Hbb-bs, the downregulation of which also led to oxidative damage. Additionally, NNA exposure induced oxidative damage in testis by decreased levels of SOD and GSH enzymes, along with an increase in MDA level. In summary, our results demonstrate that NNA exposure causes impaired testicular structure and oxidative damage, indicating its testicular toxicity. This finding not only implies the detrimental effect of NNA on male reproduction, but also provides a fundamental basis for further research on the impact of THS exposure on male reproductive health.

Abstract
Environmental factors, largely influenced by human behavior, account for approximately 80 % of malignant tumors. Risk factors associated with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) have been identified in various countries among both humans and domestic animals. This study aimed to investigate potential risk factors for NHL in dogs residing in the district of Porto, Portugal. A comprehensive survey comprising 70 questions was undertaken and given to 113 dog owners, including 55 cases and 58 controls. Our findings revealed that dogs weighing over 10 kg (OR=9.1, p < 0.001), purebred dogs (OR=2.4, p = 0.037), those with consuming homemade food (OR=2.7, p = 0.03), and fruits and vegetables (OR=2.8, p = 0.022) exhibited higher odds of developing lymphoma. Notably, dogs with lymphoma were exposed to a significantly higher mean smoking index compared to the control group (13.7, SD=12.5 vs. 8.4, SD=9.3, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that lymphoma risk in dogs seems to be influenced by a combination of innate (genetic) factors and modifiable environmental factors linked to owner habits. Nevertheless, further large-scale epidemiological studies are warranted to validate these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thirdhand smoke (THS) pollution is the residue of secondhand smoke (SHS) remaining in homes long after active smoking has ceased. This study is the first to characterize the clinical correlates of THS exposure (THSe) in children independent of secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe). The prevalence, sociodemographic characteristics, tobacco smoke exposure patterns, sources, clinical, and biomarker effects associated with THSe will be examined. METHOD Smoking and nonsmoking parents and their 0-11-year-olds (N = 1013) were recruited. Children were categorized into tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) groups via biochemical validation with salivary cotinine and hand nicotine: (1) no exposure group (NEG); (2) THSe-only group (TEG); and (3) Mixed SHSe and THSe group (MEG). At enrollment, 6-weeks, and 6-months, parental assessments and children's biological and home samples were obtained and analyzed for SHSe, THSe, THS pollution, inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. RESULTS The mean (SD) child age was 5.8 (3.4) years; 50.7% were female; and 97% were non-Hispanic (97.0%); 67.5% were White, 25.7% were Black, 6.8% were Other/unknown race. In total, 57.9%, 18.2%, and 21.9% were classified in the NEG, TEG, and MEG, respectively. Sample and data analyses are ongoing. CONCLUSION This project will provide unique insights into how THSe in the absence of SHSe affects the clinical, inflammatory, and oxidative responses in children. IMPACT This is the first prospective longitudinal study to examine the prevalence of thirdhand smoke exposure in children of nonsmokers. Unlike prior tobacco smoke exposure research, this study will examine the contribution of thirdhand smoke exposure to pediatric health outcomes. Results will provide unique insights into how thirdhand smoke exposure in the absence of secondhand smoke exposure affects the clinical, inflammatory, and oxidative responses in children of nonsmokers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Exposure to third-hand smoke (THS) represents an important health concern in many indoor environments. This study was conducted to test the beliefs of cancer patients about THS and to examine associations with effective factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 119 patients who were being treated for cancer in the oncology clinic of a University Hospital. The data were collected using a face-to-face questionnaire. This study consisted of the introductory characteristic form and the "Turkish Form of the Beliefs About Third-hand Smoke Scale". RESULTS The mean age was 58.52±14.01, with 73% of the participants being female, and 58% reported not smoking. They had a moderate Third-hand Smoke Scale (3.53±0.45). The impact of THS on health was 3.92±0.48 and Persistence in the Environment was 3.21±0.57. Education, smoking, and having cancer relatives were significantly associated with the THS scale scores. CONCLUSION None of the participants had previously heard of the concept of THS. Beliefs about the harms of THS exposure were moderate. They believed that THS has a more harmful impact on health than its persistence in the environment. Graduate degrees, smoking, and those with cancer relatives believed the harms of third-hand exposure more than the others.

Abstract
Wildfires at the wildland-urban interface (WUI) have been increasing in frequency over recent decades due to increased human development and shifting climatic patterns. The work presented here focuses on the impacts of a WUI fire on indoor air using field measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS). We found a slow decrease in VOC mixing ratios over the course of roughly 5 weeks starting 10 days after the fire, and those levels decreased to ∼20% of the initial indoor value on average. The VOC composition could be described by a combination of biomass burning emissions and indoor air composition. Comparisons were made between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) distributions in the gas phase and ash, with differences observed in their distribution between each other and when compared to fresh fuel inventory measurements. Mitigation tests were conducted running air cleaners with activated carbon and opening windows to promote indoor-outdoor air exchange, with both methods showing a decrease greater than 50% for average VOC levels indoors while active. We compare our results with simulated smoke impact experiments that show the slow decline in VOCs must be understood in the context of indoor reservoirs, beyond just on surfaces, leading to the slow release of VOCs to indoor air.

Abstract
The relationship between third-hand smoke (THS) exposure and lifespan remains inadequately explored. Our study sought to clarify the effects of THS on aging and lifespan. In this pursuit, our cross-sectional analysis assessed hematological aging markers in 986 non-smokers and examined lifespan alterations using a Drosophila model. THS exposure levels were quantified through survey metrics consistent with the Global Adult Tobacco Survey. The findings revealed that THS exposure significantly accelerated biological aging, with exposed individuals exhibiting an average increase in biological age of 3.04 years compared to their unexposed counterparts (p < 0.05). Correspondingly, the Drosophila model reflected these outcomes, showing a reduction in lifespan by 16.07 days (p < 0.01). Proteomic analyses identified MRPL2 as a pivotal protein in THS-induced aging, linking its expression to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Further metabolomic profiling highlighted disruptions in energy metabolism pathways. Follow-up in vitro experiments confirmed the role of MRPL2 in the aging processes at the cellular level. Overall, our results indicate that THS exposure is a significant accelerant of aging, providing new perspectives on the health consequences of environmental smoke residues.

Abstract
Objective This study examined relationships between home smoking/vaping bans and caregiver restrictions on child access to tobacco in the home among rural, Black/African American caregivers who smoke. Methods Data were from the baseline survey of a randomized trial conducted in 2020-2022 among caregivers who smoke cigarettes and/or little cigars/cigarillos (N = 188). Logistic regressions examined associations between independent variables (tobacco product-specific and comprehensive home smoking/vaping bans) and dependent variables (caregiver keeps tobacco in the home; among caregivers with tobacco at home, caregiver restricts child tobacco access at home). Models were adjusted for caregiver tobacco use, income, and additional covariates based on stepwise selection. Results Compared to caregivers with no bans, caregivers with full bans on cigar smoking and vaping were less likely to keep cigars and e-cigarettes at home, respectively. Caregivers with full bans across all tobacco products and no/partial bans across some products were less likely than those with lesser bans to keep e-cigarettes and "other tobacco products" (hookah, pipe, smokeless tobacco, IQOS) at home. Among caregivers with cigarettes at home, those with partial cigarette smoking bans were more likely than those with no bans to restrict child cigarette access at home. Among caregivers with e-cigarettes at home, those with no/partial bans on some products were less likely than those with lesser bans to restrict child e-cigarette access at home. Conclusions Interventions addressing intergenerational tobacco use among socially-disadvantaged groups may benefit by supporting the implementation of home smoking/vaping bans and caregiver restrictions on child access to tobacco in the home.

Abstract
Objectives Third-hand smoke (THS) is residual smoke after extinguishing a cigarette and adhering to surfaces. Re-emission into the air also makes THS a health concern for those who suffer from respiratory diseases. The present study aimed to elucidate the mechanistic pathways involved in THS-induced respiratory toxicity and the accelerative potential of THS in an H2O2-induced oxidative stress model of human airway epithelia in vitro. Materials and Methods THS extracted from terrycloth exposed to 3R4F cigarettes was assessed via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay to identify cytotoxicity. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was determined via 2,7-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) fluorescence intensity in a flow cytometer, and glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and catalase (CAT) activity were assessed spectrophotometrically. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) level was measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results THS 50% (v/v) with significant cytotoxicity in A549 cells upregulated intracellular ROS levels via a right-shifted fluorescence intensity of DCFDA compared with the control (p < 0.05), which was also amplified with H2O2 co-treatment. MDA levels remarkably increased with THS (p < 0.05). Both THS and THS + H2O2 led to notable GSH depletion, increased CAT activity, and increased IL-6 levels, which were attenuated by the negative control (N-acetylcysteine, 1 mM) (p < 0.05). Conclusion The induction of oxidative stress may be an important event in THS-induced airway toxicity that may contribute to the progression of respiratory diseases.

Abstract
Starting in the 1970s, individuals, businesses and the public have increasingly benefited from policies prohibiting smoking indoors, saving thousands of lives and billions of dollars in healthcare expenditures. Smokefree policies to protect against secondhand smoke exposure, however, do not fully protect the public from the persistent and toxic chemical residues from tobacco smoke (also known as thirdhand smoke) that linger in indoor environments for years after smoking stops. Nor do these policies address the economic costs that individuals, businesses and the public bear in their attempts to remediate this toxic residue. We discuss policy-relevant differences between secondhand smoke and thirdhand smoke exposure: persistent pollutant reservoirs, pollutant transport, routes of exposure, the time gap between initial cause and effect, and remediation and disposal. We examine four policy considerations to better protect the public from involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke pollutants from all sources. We call for (a) redefining smokefree as free of tobacco smoke pollutants from secondhand and thirdhand smoke; (b) eliminating exemptions to comprehensive smoking bans; (c) identifying indoor environments with significant thirdhand smoke reservoirs; and (d) remediating thirdhand smoke. We use the case of California as an example of how secondhand smoke-protective laws may be strengthened to encompass thirdhand smoke protections. The health risks and economic costs of thirdhand smoke require that smokefree policies, environmental protections, real estate and rental disclosure policies, tenant protections, and consumer protection laws be strengthened to ensure that the public is fully protected from and informed about the risks of thirdhand smoke exposure.

Abstract
Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide and the second most common cancer in both men and women. In addition to smoking, other risk factors, such as environmental tobacco smoke, air pollution, biomass combustion, radon gas, occupational exposure, lung disease, family history of cancer, geographic variability, and genetic factors, play an essential role in developing LC. Current screening guidelines and eligibility criteria have limited efficacy in identifying LC cases (50 %), as most screening programs primarily target subjects with a smoking history as the leading risk factor. Implementing LC screening programs in people who have never smoked (PNS) can significantly impact cancer-specific survival and early disease detection. However, the available evidence regarding the feasibility and effectiveness of such programs is limited. Therefore, further research on LC screening in PNS is warranted to determine the necessary techniques for accurately identifying individuals who should be included in screening programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been reported to be associated with the children's neurodevelopment, who may be exposed to tobacco smoke simultaneously. The evidence about joint effect of DHA intake and tobacco smoke exposure on children and adolescents' learning disabilities (LD) was limited. The objective of this study was to assess the joint effect of DHA intake and tobacco smoke exposure on children and adolescents' LD. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of the NHANES 1999-2004 was performed. Children and adolescents aged 6-15 years old were included. The outcome was diagnosed by parental report of ever health professionals or school representative-identified LD. Dietary DHA intake data were obtained by food frequency questionnaire and tobacco smoke exposure levels were evaluated by serum cotinine levels. Weighted univariable and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the joint effect of DHA intake and tobacco smoke exposure on LD in children and adolescents, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). This joint association was further assessed after stratification by age, gender, body mass index, the history of attention deficit disorder and seen mental health professional. RESULTS We identified 5,247 children and adolescents in present study, of whom 593 (11.30%) had LD. After adjusting covariates, we observed children and adolescents with DHA intake (OR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.61-0.96) was related to lower incidence of LD; children who exposure to tobacco smoke was related to higher incidence of LD (OR = 1.54, 95%CI: 1.07-2.23); children and adolescents who exposure to tobacco smoke and without DHA intake were related to highest odds of LD (OR = 2.08, 95%CI: 1.37-3.17, P for trend = 0.042), that was, DHA and tobacco smoke exposure may have a joint effect on the odds of LD in children and adolescents. Subgroup analyses suggested this joint effect was robust especially among children and adolescents with normal & underweight BMI and without the history of attention deficit disorder and seen mental health professional. CONCLUSION Increasing the DHA intake and reducing tobacco smoke exposure may have a potential role in the prevention of LD in children and adolescents. This joint effect warrants further investigation by large-scale prospective study.

Abstract
The pollution of indoor environments and the consequent health risks associated with thirdhand smoke (THS) are increasingly recognized in recent years. However, the carcinogenic potential of THS and its underlying mechanisms have yet to be thoroughly explored. In this study, we examined the effects of short-term THS exposure on the development of gastric cancer (GC) in vitro and in vivo. In a mouse model of spontaneous GC, CC036, we observed a significant increase in gastric tumor incidence and a decrease in tumor-free survival upon THS exposure as compared to control. RNA sequencing of primary gastric epithelial cells derived from CC036 mice showed that THS exposure increased expression of genes related to the extracellular matrix and cytoskeletal protein structure. We then identified a THS exposure-induced 91-gene expression signature in CC036 and a homologous 84-gene signature in human GC patients that predicted the prognosis, with secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) and tribbles pseudokinase 3 (TRIB3) emerging as potential targets through which THS may promote gastric carcinogenesis. We also treated human GC cell lines in vitro with media containing various concentrations of THS, which, in some exposure dose range, significantly increased their proliferation, invasion, and migration. We showed that THS exposure could activate the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) pathway at the transcript and protein level. We conclude that short-term exposure to THS is associated with an increased risk of GC and that activation of the EMT program could be one potential mechanism. Increased understanding of the cancer risk associated with THS exposure will help identify new preventive and therapeutic strategies for tobacco-related disease as well as provide scientific evidence and rationale for policy decisions related to THS pollution control to protect vulnerable subpopulations such as children.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thirdhand smoke (THS) is associated with many public health and disease concerns, such as respiratory illness, cancer, lipidemia, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We have previously shown that a moderate to long-term exposure to THS increases the risk of thrombosis. However, whether short-term exposure to THS would produce any effects remains to be discovered. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of 1-month THS exposure on platelet function, in vivo and in vitro, and on cytokine response, in a sex-dependent manner. AIMS AND METHODS Secondhand smoke or clean air (CA) exposed upholstery materials for 1 week were kept in cages housed with 5-6 mice, and the procedure was repeated for 4 weeks. These THS-exposed mice were evaluated for thrombogenesis and platelet function assays. In addition, cytokines expression was evaluated from pooled serum. RESULTS Compared to the CA group, THS exposure significantly shortened the tail bleeding time and carotid artery thrombus formation. Moreover, the female mice appeared more sensitive to THS exposure than males. Furthermore, platelet aggregation, dense granule secretion, and P-selectin activation markers were significantly elevated due to THS exposure. In addition, high-throughput screening showed at least 30 cytokines differentially modulated by THS in females relative to 26 in male mice. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, these results demonstrate that 1 month of THS exposure represents a high health risk, in part, by triggering a prothrombotic phenotype that appears to be more significant in females, who are at a much higher risk for occlusive CVD. Additionally, changes in cytokine levels mediate some of the THS-induced occlusive effects. IMPLICATIONS This study revealed that THS exposure for 1 month is detrimental to the cardiovascular health of both sexes; however, females could be more aggressively affected than males. In addition, interleukins and chemokines could be critical factors for initiating prothrombotic activity due to THS exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) through secondhand and thirdhand smoke is a modifiable risk factor that contributes to childhood morbidity. Limited research has assessed surface TSE pollution in children's environments as a potential source of thirdhand smoke exposure, and none have examined levels of the tobacco-specific nitrosamine 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) on surfaces. OBJECTIVE This study measured surface NNK and nicotine in children's homes and associations with sociodemographics and parent-reported TSE behaviors. We assessed correlations of surface NNK and nicotine with dust NNK, dust nicotine, and child cotinine. METHODS Home surface wipe NNK and nicotine data from 84 children who lived with smokers were analyzed. Tobit and simple linear regression analyses were conducted to assess associations of surface NNK and nicotine with child characteristics. Spearman's (ρ) correlations assessed the strength of associations between environmental markers and child cotinine. RESULTS Nearly half (48.8%) of children's home surfaces had detectable NNK and 100% had detectable nicotine. The respective geometric means (GMs) of surface NNK and nicotine loadings were 14.0 ng/m2 and 16.4 µg/m2. Surface NNK positively correlated with surface nicotine (ρ = 0.54, p < 0.001) and dust NNK (ρ = 0.30, p = 0.020). Surface nicotine positively correlated with dust NNK (ρ = 0.42, p < 0.001) and dust nicotine (ρ = 0.24, p = 0.041). Children with household incomes ≤$15,000 had higher surface NNK levels (GM = 18.7 ng/m2, p = 0.017) compared to children with household incomes >$15,000 (GM = 7.1 ng/m2). Children with no home smoking bans had higher surface NNK (GM = 18.1 ng/m2, p = 0.020) and surface nicotine (GM = 17.7 µg/m2, p = 0.019) levels compared to children with smoking bans (GM = 7.5 ng/m2, 4.8 µg/m2, respectively). IMPACT Although nicotine on surfaces is an established marker of thirdhand smoke pollution, other thirdhand smoke contaminants have not been measured on surfaces in the homes of children living with smokers. We provide evidence that the potent carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamine NNK was detectable on surfaces in nearly half of children's homes, and nicotine was detectable on all surfaces. Surface NNK was positively correlated with surface nicotine and dust NNK. Detectable surface NNK levels were found in homes with indoor smoking bans, indicating the role of NNK as a persistent thirdhand smoke pollutant accumulating on surfaces as well as in dust.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous, toxic environmental chemicals that can cause adverse reproductive health effects. The objectives of this mini-review are to highlight the adverse reproductive outcomes due to PAH exposure with the main focus on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and premature ovarian failure (POF) and to provide perspectives on future research needs. CONTENT We reviewed studies that have reported the adverse reproductive outcomes associated with PAHs exposures in women through a comprehensive search of bibliographic databases and gray literature sources. In addition, potentially modifiable sources of exposure to PAHs and associated reproductive outcomes were also investigated. SUMMARY A total of 232 papers were retrieved through a comprehensive search of bibliographic databases, out of which three studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Results showed that exposure to PAHs is associated with adverse reproductive outcomes defined as PCOS, POF, and reproductive hormone imbalance. Sources of PAH exposure associated with adverse reproductive outcomes include active and passive tobacco smoking, specific cooking methods, and pesticides. OUTLOOK Future studies are warranted to examine the mechanisms by which PAHs result in adverse reproductive endpoints in women. Further, environmental exposures that are potentially modifiable such as exposure to tobacco smoke, may contribute to PAH exposure, and these exposures should be targeted in future policies and interventions.

Abstract
While smoking is widely acknowledged as a risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the connection between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and RA in never-smoking adults remains limited and inconsistent. This study aims to explore and quantify this association using serum cotinine levels. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 14,940 adults who self-report as never smokers, using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 1999 to 2018. Based on previous literature, SHS exposure was categorized into four groups according to serum cotinine levels. Compared to individuals in the unexposed group (serum cotinine < 0.05 ng/mL), the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for RA was 1.37 (95% CI 1.14-1.64, p = 0.001) in the low exposure group (serum cotinine at 0.05 to 0.99 ng/mL) after adjusting for covariates. However, no significant association was found in the moderate exposure group (serum cotinine at 1 to 10 ng/mL) or the heavy exposure group (serum cotinine ≥ 10 ng/mL). Furthermore, we detected a non-linear, positively saturated correlation between the cotinine levels after log2 transformation and RA, with a turning point at approximately - 2.756 ng/mL (OR = 1.163, 95% CI 1.073-1.261, p = 0.0002). The stability of the results was confirmed by subgroup analysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and poor sleep are public health problems with their own set of consequences. This study assessed whether TSE was associated with sleep duration among U.S. adolescents. METHOD We conducted a secondary analysis of 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data including 914 nontobacco-using adolescents ages 16-19 years. TSE measures included cotinine and self-reported home TSE groups including no home TSE, thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure, and secondhand smoke (SHS)+THS exposure. Sleep duration was assessed in hours and categorically as insufficient sleep (recommended hours). Weighted multiple linear regression and multinomial regression models were conducted. RESULTS Adolescents with higher log-cotinine levels had higher number of sleep hours (β = 0.31, 95%CI = 0.02,0.60) and were at increased odds of reporting excess sleep (AOR = 1.41, 95%CI = 1.40,1.42), but were at reduced odds of reporting insufficient sleep (AOR = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.87,0.89). Compared to adolescents with no home TSE, adolescents with home THS exposure and home SHS+THS exposure were at increased odds of reporting insufficient sleep (AOR = 2.27, 95%CI = 2.26,2.29; AOR = 2.75, 95%CI = 2.72,2.77, respectively) and excess sleep (AOR = 1.89, 95%CI = 1.87,1.90; AOR = 5.29, 95%CI = 5.23,5.34, respectively). CONCLUSIONS TSE may affect insufficient and excess sleep duration among adolescents. Eliminating TSE may promote adolescent respiratory and sleep health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Smoke Free Families (SFF) program trained pediatric providers to use an SFF tool during well-child visits (WCVs) of infants ≤12 months to "Ask" caregivers about tobacco use, "Advise" smokers to quit, and "Refer" smokers to cessation services (AAR). The primary objectives were to assess the prevalence and changes in caregiver tobacco use after being screened and counseled by providers using the SFF tool. A secondary objective was to examine providers' AAR behavior facilitated by using the SFF tool. METHODS Pediatric practices participated in 1 of 3 6-9-month SFF program waves. Over the 3 waves, all initial SFF tools completed on caregivers during their infant's WCV were evaluated for the caregiver and household tobacco use and providers' AAR rates. An infant's first and next WCV was matched to determine changes in caregiver tobacco product use. RESULTS In total, the SFF tool was completed at 19,976 WCVs; 2081 (18.8%) infants were exposed to tobacco smoke. A total of 834 (74.1%) caregivers who smoked received counseling: 786 (69.9%) were advised to quit, 700 (62.2%) were given cessation resources, and 198 (17.6%) were referred to the Quitline. In total, 230 (27.6%) of caregivers who smoked had a second visit; 58 (25.2%) self-reported that they quit using tobacco. Among cigarette users (n = 183), 89 (48.6%) reported that they used fewer cigarettes or quit at their infants' second WCV. CONCLUSIONS Systematic use of the SFF AAR tool during infants' WCVs could improve the health of caregivers and children, resulting in decreases in tobacco-related morbidity.

Abstract
Thirdhand smoke (THS) is the persistent and toxic residue from tobacco smoke in indoor environments. A comprehensive understanding of the chemical constituents of THS is necessary to assess the risks of long-term exposure and to establish reliable THS tracers. The objective of this study was to investigate compounds associated with THS through nontargeted analysis (NTA) of settled house dust samples from smokers' and non-smokers' homes, using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC/TOF-MS). Compounds that were either only present in dust from smokers' homes or that had significantly larger abundance than in non-smokers' homes were termed qualified compounds. We identified 140 qualified compounds, and of these, 42 compounds were tentatively identified by searching matching mass spectra in NIST electron impact (EI) mass spectral library including 20 compounds confirmed with their authentic standards. Among the 42 compounds, 26 compounds were statistically more abundant (p < 0.10) in dust from homes of smokers; seven were tobacco-specific compounds, two of which (nornicotyrine, 3-ethenylpyridine) have not been reported before in house dust. Two compounds, tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (a toxic compound used as a flame retardant and reported in tobacco) and propanoic acid, 2-methyl-, 1-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-propanediyl ester (highly abundant and reported in exhaled air of smokers), were found in dust from all smokers' homes and in zero non-smokers' homes, making these potential THS tracers, possibly associated with recent smoking. Benzyl methyl ketone was significantly higher in dust in smokers' homes, and was previously reported not as a product of tobacco but rather as a form of methamphetamine. This compound was recently reported in mainstream tobacco smoke condensate through NTA as well. These identified potential tracers and chemical components of THS in this study can be further investigated for use in developing THS contamination and exposure assessments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study evaluates the association between passive smoking, specifically secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure, and sleep quality in a hypertensive population. METHODS We enrolled 1427 eligible hypertensive patients from a 2022 national cross-sectional survey in China. Data on tobacco smoke exposure and sleep were collected via questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression and linear regression were employed to assess the relationship between passive smoking and sleep quality characteristics, as well as the correlation between passive smoking exposure characteristics and sleep quality. RESULTS Among 589 hypertensive patients with no tobacco smoke exposure, 679 exposed to SHS, and 159 exposed to THS, SHS exposure was associated with a higher risk of poor sleep quality, even after adjusting for potential confounding factors (β=0.10; 95% CI: 0.32-0.95). No significant relationship was observed between THS exposure and sleep quality. SHS exposure was associated with various sleep quality characteristics, including shorter sleep duration (AOR=1.71; 95% CI: 1.06-2.76) and increased frequency of 1-2 sleep disturbances per week (AOR=1.68; 95% CI: 1.25-2.26). Individuals exposed to SHS were more likely to experience poorer subjective sleep quality (AOR=1.53; 95% CI: 1.07-2.21) and have sleep efficiency <65% (AOR=1.82; 95% CI: 1.22-2.71). Exposure to passive smoking at home, in the community, in public places, exposure to passive smoking with family and friends, and increased frequency of exposure, were all associated with a higher risk of poor sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that SHS exposure in hypertensive populations is associated with poor sleep quality and various characteristics of sleep quality. No significant association was found between THS exposure and sleep quality. These findings underscore the need to enhance tobacco control efforts in China, particularly for individuals with chronic diseases, to safeguard public health.

Abstract
Thirdhand smoke (THS) is the residual cigarette smoke that settles on indoor surface fabrics, dust and can accumulate in the environment. Therefore, it can be a risk factor for individuals who have frequent dermal contact with THS-contaminated surfaces. In the present study, it was aimed to elucidate the toxicity of dermal THS exposure in HaCaT human keratinocytes. The THS was extracted from terrycloth exposed to 3R4F research cigarette smoke in a closed chamber and the adverse outcomes induced by THS were determined through assessment of cytotoxicity tests (MTT and NRU), intracellular GSH level, total SOD activity, matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and IL-6 levels. The wound healing capacity of THS-exposed keratinocytes was evaluated via scratch assay. A potent antioxidant isothiocyanate compound, sulforaphane (SFN), was used as a negative control. THS was dose-dependently cytotoxic (12.5%-100%, v/v) to the HaCaT cells through mitochondrial cell dysfunction (p < 0.01), which was ameliorated by SFN (0.62 μM) pre-treatment. In parallel, THS exposure significantly decreased the intracellular GSH deposits and T-SOD activity in keratinocytes. Collagen degradation through elevated MMP-1 expression was observed in THS-exposed cells in parallel with the delay of wound healing and increased pro-inflammatory response in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). The findings are expected to raise awareness about THS as an environmental pollutant for skin, particularly in the highest-ranked countries in cigarette consumption. To conclude, these results might contribute to the studies on the importance of dermal exposure to THS in the pathogenesis of epidermal alterations and the other skin diseases.

Abstract
Introduction: Secondhand and thirdhand tobacco smoke exposure most often occur at home, but little is known about occurrences of in-home cannabis smoking. We ascertained in-home cannabis smoking reported by all cannabis-using (i.e., used in the last 12 months) respondents to the Global Drug Survey (GDS; international-GDS sample), and among U.S. cannabis-using respondents (US-GDS sample). Materials and Methods: We used data collected November 2019-January 2020 for the 2020 GDS, an annual anonymous, cross-sectional survey; respondents were 16+ years old, from 191 countries. We estimated any and daily in-home cannabis smoking in the last 30 days among international-GDS respondents (n=63,797), using mixed effects logistic regression. US-GDS respondents (n=6,580) were weighted to the covariate distribution of the nationally representative 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health cannabis-using sample, using inverse odds probability weighting, to make estimates more generalizable to the U.S. cannabis-using population. Results: For the international-GDS cannabis-using respondents, any in-home cannabis smoking was reported by 63.9% of men, 61.9% of women, and 68.6% of nonbinary people; and by age (<25 years old=62.7%, 25-34 years old=65.0%, and 35+ years old=62.8%). Daily in-home cannabis smoking was highest among nonbinary (28.7%) and respondents 35+ years of age (28.0%). For the weighted US-GDS cannabis-using respondents, any in-home cannabis smoking was reported by 49.8% of males and 61.2% of females; and by age (<25 years old=62.6%, 25-34 years old=41.8%, 35+ years old=57.9%). Weighted daily in-home smoking was 23.2% among males and 37.1% among females; by age (<25 years old=34.8%, 25-34 years old=27.8%, and 35+ years old=21.6%). Conclusions: There was high daily cannabis smoking in homes of international-GDS and US-GDS respondents who used cannabis in the last 12 months. In part, due to cannabis legalization, the number of users worldwide has increased over the past decade. Criminal stigma historically associated with cannabis continues to drive those users indoors. In this context, our findings support further investigation of cannabis use behavior to understand how often people are exposed to secondhand and thirdhand cannabis smoke and the consequences of that exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Secondhand smoke (SHS) continues a significant public health concern globally. This study aimed to assess the global burden of stroke attributable to SHS exposure during 1990-2019. METHODS This analysis utilized data on stroke morbidity and mortality from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study covering 204 countries and territories. We estimated stroke burden indicators attributable to SHS exposure, including age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life-year rate (ASDR), stratified by age, sex, region, and stroke subtype. RESULTS In 2019, global SHS exposure accounted for 2.01 [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 1.49-2.58] million stroke mortality. The ASMR and ASDR were 2.5 (95% UI: 1.9-3.2) and 61.5 (95% UI: 46-78.8) per 100,000 population, respectively. The disease burden was higher among women than men and higher among the elderly than younger populations. Intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke had a more significant burden than subarachnoid hemorrhage. From 1990 to 2019, the ASMR and ASDR declined [estimated annual percentage change: -2.08 (95% CI: -2.21% to -1.95%) and -2.08% (95% CI: -2.19% to -1.97%) for each], but the absolute number of mortalities increased along with population growth. Substantial disparities existed across regions and sociodemographic groups. CONCLUSION Despite declining ASMR and ASDR over time, the absolute number of stroke deaths attributable to SHS continued to rise globally, imposing a considerable stroke burden worldwide. These findings can inform targeted interventions and policies aimed at SHS control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to thirdhand smoke (THS) residue takes place through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal transfer. Hand nicotine levels have been proposed to measure THS pollution in the environment of children, but little is known about its variability and stability over time and correlates of change. OBJECTIVES The goal was to determine the stability of hand nicotine in comparison to urinary biomarkers and to explore factors that influence changes in hand nicotine. METHODS Data were collected from 0 to 11-year-old children (Mean age = 5.9) who lived with ≥1 tobacco smokers (N = 129). At a 6-week interval, we collected repeated measures of hand nicotine, four urinary biomarkers (cotinine, trans-3'-hydroxycotinine, nicotelline N-oxides, and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol), and parent-reported child tobacco smoke exposure (TSE). Dependent sample t-tests, correlations, and multivariable regression analyses were conducted to examine the changes in child TSE. RESULTS Hand nicotine levels (r = 0.63, p < 0.001) showed similar correlations between repeated measures to urinary biomarkers (r = 0.58-0.71; p < 0.001). Different from urinary biomarkers, mean hand nicotine levels increased over time (t(113) = 3.37, p < 0.001) being significantly higher in children from homes without smoking bans at Time 2 (p = 0.016) compared to Time 1 (p = 0.003). Changes in hand nicotine correlated with changes in cotinine and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (r = 0.30 and r = 0.19, respectively, p < 0.05). Children with home smoking bans at Time 1 and 2 showed significantly lower hand nicotine levels compared to children without home smoking bans. DISCUSSION Findings indicate that hand nicotine levels provide additional insights into children's exposure to tobacco smoke pollutants than reported child TSE and urinary biomarkers. Changes in hand nicotine levels show that consistent home smoking bans in homes of children of smokers can lower THS exposure. Hand nicotine levels may be influenced by the environmental settings in which they are collected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to estimate airborne nicotine concentrations and nicotine, cotinine, and tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in settled dust from private cars in Spain and the UK. METHODS We measured vapor-phase nicotine concentrations in a convenience sample of 45 private cars from Spain (N = 30) and the UK (N = 15) in 2017-2018. We recruited non-smoking drivers (n = 20), smoking drivers who do not smoke inside the car (n = 15), and smoking drivers who smoke inside (n = 10). Nicotine, cotinine, and three TSNAs (NNK, NNN, NNA) were also measured in settled dust in a random subsample (n = 20). We computed medians and interquartile ranges (IQR) of secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS) compounds according to the drivers' profile. RESULTS 24-h samples yielded median airborne nicotine concentrations below the limit of quantification (LOQ) (IQR: CONCLUSIONS All cars of smokers had measurable SHS and THS pollution, the exposure levels markedly higher in vehicles of drivers where smoking took place. Our results evidence the need for policies to prohibit smoking in vehicles, but also urge for more comprehensive strategies aiming towards the elimination of tobacco consumption.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thirdhand smoke is an emerging threat to global public health. There is no research on young people's exposure to thirdhand smoke in China. This study aims to investigate the exposure status and beliefs of thirdhand smoke among young Chinese people and provide a reference for policy regarding thirdhand smoke. METHODS Data from the 2022 Chinese Resident Psychological and Behavioral Survey were used to select young people aged 15-24 years. A total of 11781 subjects were included in this study. Demographic information, beliefs about thirdhand smoke, and exposure status to thirdhand smoke were investigated. RESULTS Among the participants, 47.8% reported being exposed to thirdhand smoke (males: 49.1%, females: 47.0%). Young people living in urban areas (AOR=0.84, 95% CI: 0.77-0.91, p<0.001) and those with a monthly family income >12000 RMB (AOR=0.81, 95% CI: 0.71-0.92, p=0.001) were less likely to be exposed to thirdhand smoke. Young people with junior high school education or higher, and current or former smokers, were more likely to be exposed to thirdhand smoke. There is room for improvement in the beliefs about thirdhand smoke among young people. CONCLUSIONS Thirdhand smoke exposure is an issue that should be addressed in public health policy. Young people with low income and current or former smokers are populations that should be mainly focused on in public education and prevention work on thirdhand smoke.

Abstract
This study examined the association between home tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) status and gastrointestinal problems in the past 12 months among US children. We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2018-2019 National Survey of Children's Health cross-sectional data including 20 149 children aged 4 to 10 years. Weighted logistic regression models unadjusted and adjusted for child and family covariates were fitted. Overall, 12.3% of children had home thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure only and 1.8% had home secondhand smoke (SHS) and THS exposure. Unadjusted (odds ratio [OR] = 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.32-2.20) and adjusted (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.14-1.99) logistic regression results indicated that relative to children with no home TSE, children with home THS exposure only were at increased odds of having frequent or chronic difficulty with gastrointestinal problems over the past 12 months. Interventions are critically needed to promote smoking cessation among household members who live with children in order to reduce levels of SHS and THS in their homes.

Abstract
In the last decade, e-cigarette usage has increased, with an estimated 82 million e-cigarette users globally. This is, in part, due to the common opinion that they are "healthier" than tobacco cigarettes or simply "water vapour". Third-hand e-vapour exposure is the chemical residue left behind from e-cigarette aerosols, which is of concern due to its invisible nature, especially among young children. However, there is limited information surrounding third-hand e-vapour exposure. This study aimed to investigate the pulmonary effects of sub-chronic third-hand e-vapour exposure in a murine model. BALB/c mice (4 weeks of age) were exposed to a towel containing nicotine free (0 mg) e-vapour, nicotine (18 mg) e-vapour, or no e-vapour (sham) and replaced daily for 4 weeks. At the endpoint, lung function was assessed, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lungs were collected to measure inflammation and fibrosis. Mice exposed to third-hand e-vapour without nicotine had alveolar enlargement compared to sham exposed controls. Mice exposed to third-hand e-vapour with nicotine had reduced bronchial responsiveness to provocation, increased epithelial thickening in large airways, increased epithelial layers in small airways, alveolar enlargement, and increased small airway collagen deposition, compared to sham exposed controls. In conclusion, our study shows that third-hand e-vapour exposure, particularly in the presence of nicotine, negatively affects the lung health of mice and highlights the need for greater public awareness surrounding the dangers of third-hand exposure to e-cigarette vapour.

Abstract
Families play a primary role in protecting children. Thirdhand smoke (THS) is an underestimated public health issue, and health effects correlated to its exposition are emerging. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze papers focusing on knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors regarding THS among parents, families, and caregivers, published until May 2022 on MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. Critical appraisal of the included studies was conducted by two independent reviewers using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool. Out of the 97 articles, 8 were included in this review (two from the USA, one from Europe, and five from Asia). Although there were no restrictions on the date of publication, all the articles were published in the last 10 years, underlining that THS is an emerging concept. They were characterized by relevant heterogeneity in the study design and assessment tools. The results showed that percentages of parents who believed that THS is harmful ranged from 42.4% to 91%, but parental awareness was not always associated with the adoption of a home- and car-smoking ban or healthy behaviors. Further research is needed to understand the resistance and problems faced by parents who are aware of THS risks but unable to improve good practices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A creating smoke-free home is a way to protect a vulnerable group from being exposed to secondhand smoke in the home, such as children, infants, and non-smokers. Studies reported an intervention for promoting a smoke-free home by using secondhand smoke messages and smoking cessation messages. However, the thirdhand smoke (THS) message has rarely been found. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the prevalence and correlations of smoking bans in homes. METHODS Secondary data from a community-based cross-sectional design survey was used for this study. Smoking ban status was defined as a smoking ban or no smoking ban. We used multiple logistic regression to test the association between factors and smoking ban status. An adjusted odd ratio and 95% confidence interval were reported. RESULTS Of the 882 participants included in this analysis, 38.66% (95%CI: 35.43, 41.97) had a smoking ban at home. A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that participants who believe that secondhand or THS harms children had a greater correlation with developing a smoking ban in the home compared with those who did not believe (odd ratio: 3.94, 95% confidence interval: 2.35, 6.60 and odd ratio:4.22, 95% confidence interval:2.6, 6.86, respectively). CONCLUSION This study found that the belief that thirdhand smoke and secondhand smoke exposure harm children. The smoke-free home message's relevance to the harms of thirdhand smoke exposure should be adapted to be promoted, especially in homes.

Abstract
We assessed the efficacy of ozonation as an indoor remediation strategy by evaluating how a carpet serves as a sink and long-term source of thirdhand tobacco smoke (THS) while protecting contaminants absorbed in deep reservoirs by scavenging ozone. Specimens from unused carpet that was exposed to smoke in the lab ("fresh THS") and contaminated carpets retrieved from smokers' homes ("aged THS") were treated with 1000 ppb ozone in bench-scale tests. Nicotine was partially removed from fresh THS specimens by volatilization and oxidation, but it was not significantly eliminated from aged THS samples. By contrast, most of the 24 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons detected in both samples were partially removed by ozone. One of the home-aged carpets was installed in an 18 m3 room-sized chamber, where its nicotine emission rate was 950 ng day-1 m-2. In a typical home, such daily emissions could amount to a non-negligible fraction of the nicotine released by smoking one cigarette. The operation of a commercial ozone generator for a total duration of 156 min, reaching concentrations up to 10,000 ppb, did not significantly reduce the carpet nicotine loading (26-122 mg m-2). Ozone reacted primarily with carpet fibers, rather than with THS, leading to short-term emissions of aldehydes and aerosol particles. Hence, by being absorbed deeply into carpet fibers, THS constituents can be partially shielded from ozonation.

Abstract
Secondhand smoke (SHS: a mixture of sidestream and mainstream smoke) and thirdhand smoke (THS: made up of the pollutants that settle indoors after smoking in closed environments) are a significant public health concern. SHS and THS contain various chemicals which can be released into the air or settle on surfaces. At present, the hazards of SHS and THS are not as well documented. In this review, we describe the chemical contents of THS and SHS, exposure routes, vulnerable groups, health effects, and protective strategies. The literature search was conducted for published papers on September 2022 in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. This review could provide a comprehensive understanding of the chemical contents of THS and SHS, exposure routes, vulnerable groups, health effects, protective strategies, and future researches on environmental tobacco smoke.

Abstract
Active and passive smoking in pregnant women is associated with perinatal morbidity and mortality risk, including abortion, preterm birth, low birthweight, and malformations. No data are available on intrauterine exposure to smoking during pregnancy in dogs. This study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the detectability and quantity of cotinine, the major metabolite of nicotine, in maternal (serum and hair) and newborn (amniotic fluid and hair) biospecimens collected at birth in dogs. For this purpose, twelve pregnant bitches, six exposed to the owner's smoke and six unexposed, were enrolled. A further six non-pregnant bitches exposed to passive smoke were included to investigate the role of pregnancy status on cotinine uptake. Exposed dogs, dams, and puppies had greater cotinine concentrations than unexposed ones. Although without statistical significance, serum and hair cotinine concentrations were higher in pregnant compared to non-pregnant bitches, suggesting a different sensitivity to tobacco smoke exposure during gestation. The present results provide evidence for cotinine transplacental passage in the dog. It is conceivable that fragile patients such as pregnant, lactating, and neonate dogs may be more susceptible to the harmful effects of second-hand smoke exposure. Owners should be sensitized to the risk of smoke exposure for their pets.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We assessed tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) levels based on private and public locations of TSE according to race and ethnicity among US school-aged children ages 6-11 years and adolescents ages 12-17 years. AIMS AND METHODS Data were from 5296 children and adolescents who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2018. Racial and ethnic groups were non-Hispanic white, black, other or multiracial, and Hispanic. NHANES assessed serum cotinine and the following TSE locations: homes and whether smokers did not smoke indoors (home thirdhand smoke [THS] exposure proxy) or smoked indoors (secondhand [SHS] and THS exposure proxy), cars, in other homes, restaurants, or any other indoor area. We used stratified weighted linear regression models by racial and ethnic groups and assessed the variance in cotinine levels explained by each location within each age group. RESULTS Among 6-11-year-olds, exposure to home THS only and home SHS + THS predicted higher log-cotinine among all racial and ethnic groups. Non-Hispanic white children exposed to car TSE had higher log-cotinine (β = 1.64, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.91% to 2.37%) compared to those unexposed. Non-Hispanic other/multiracial children exposed to restaurant TSE had higher log-cotinine (β = 1.13, 95% CI = 0.23% to 2.03%) compared to those unexposed. Among 12-17-year-olds, home SHS + THS exposure predicted higher log-cotinine among all racial and ethnic groups, except for non-Hispanic black adolescents. Car TSE predicted higher log-cotinine among all racial and ethnic groups. Non-Hispanic black adolescents with TSE in another indoor area had higher log-cotinine (β = 2.84, 95% CI = 0.85% to 4.83%) compared to those unexposed. CONCLUSIONS TSE location was uniquely associated with cotinine levels by race and ethnicity. Smoke-free home and car legislation are needed to reduce TSE among children and adolescents of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. IMPLICATIONS Racial and ethnic disparities in TSE trends have remained stable among US children and adolescents over time. This study's results indicate that TSE locations differentially contribute to biochemically measured TSE within racial and ethnic groups. Home TSE significantly contributed to cotinine levels among school-aged children 6-11 years old, and car TSE significantly contributed to cotinine levels among adolescents 12-17 years old. Racial and ethnic differences in locations of TSE were observed among each age group. Study findings provide unique insight into TSE sources, and indicate that home and car smoke-free legislation have great potential to reduce TSE among youth of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Abstract
Background Increasing legalization of cannabis, in addition to longstanding rates of tobacco use, raises concerns for possible cognitive decrements from secondhand smoke or environmental exposure, although little research exists. We investigate the relation between cognition and secondhand and environmental cannabis and tobacco exposure in youth. Methods The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study year 2 follow-up (N = 5580; 48% female) cognitive performance and secondhand or environmental cannabis or tobacco exposure data were used. Principal components analysis identified a global cognition factor. Linear mixed-effects models assessed global cognition and individual cognitive task performance by cannabis and/or tobacco environmental exposure. Sociodemographics and other potential confounds were examined. p values were adjusted using the false discovery rate method. Results Global cognition was not related to any exposure group after testing corrections and considering confounds. Beyond covariates and family- and site-level factors, secondhand tobacco was related to poorer visual memory (p = .02), and environmental tobacco was associated with poorer visuospatial (p = .02) and language (p = .008) skills. Secondhand cannabis was related to cognition, but not after controlling for potential confounders (p > .05). Environmental cannabis was related to better oral reading (p = .01). Including covariates attenuated effect sizes. Conclusions Secondhand tobacco exposure was associated with poorer visual memory, while environmental tobacco exposure was related to poorer language and visuospatial skills. Secondhand cannabis was not related to cognition after controlling for sociodemographic factors, but environmental cannabis exposure was related to better reading. Because, to our knowledge, this is the first known study of its kind and thus preliminary, secondhand cannabis should continue to be investigated to confirm results.

Abstract
Increasing evidence has shown that thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure is likely to induce adverse health effects. An important knowledge gap remains in our understanding of THS exposure related to cancer risk in the human population. Population-based animal models are useful and powerful in investigating the interplay between host genetics and THS exposure on cancer risk. Here, we used the Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse population-based model system, which recapitulates the genetic and phenotypic diversity observed in the human population, to assess cancer risk after a short period of exposure, between 4 and 9 weeks of age. Eight CC strains (CC001, CC019, CC026, CC036, CC037, CC041, CC042 and CC051) were included in our study. We quantified pan-tumor incidence, tumor burden per mouse, organ tumor spectrum and tumor-free survival until 18 months of age. At the population level, we observed a significantly increased pan-tumor incidence and tumor burden per mouse in THS-treated mice as compared to the control (p = 3.04E-06). Lung and liver tissues exhibited the largest risk of undergoing tumorigenesis after THS exposure. Tumor-free survival was significantly reduced in THS-treated mice compared to control (p = 0.044). At the individual strain level, we observed a large variation in tumor incidence across the 8 CC strains. CC036 and CC041 exhibited a significant increase in pan-tumor incidence (p = 0.0084 and p = 0.000066, respectively) after THS exposure compared to control. We conclude that early-life THS exposure increases tumor development in CC mice and that host genetic background plays an important role in individual susceptibility to THS-induced tumorigenesis. Genetic background is an important factor that should be taken into account when determining human cancer risk of THS exposure.

Abstract
Influenza B virus (IBV) is a major respiratory viral pathogen. Due to a lack of pandemic potential for IBV, there is a lag in research on IBV pathology and immunological responses compared to IAV. Therefore, the impact of various lifestyle and environmental factors on IBV infections, such as cigarette smoking (CS), remains elusive. Despite the increased risk and severity of IAV infections with CS, limited information exists on the impact of CS on IBV infections due to the absence of suitable animal models. To this end, we developed an animal model system by pre-treating mice for two weeks with cigarette smoke extract (CSE), then infected them with IBV and monitored the resulting pathological, immunological, and virological effects. Our results reveal that the CSE treatment decreased IBV specific IgG levels yet did not change viral replication in the upper airway/the lung, and weight recovery post infection. However, higher concentrations of CSE did result in higher mortality post infection. Together, this suggests that CS induced inflammation coupled with IBV infection resulted in exacerbated disease outcome.

Abstract
Little is known about the chemical exposures that electronic cigarette (EC) users receive and emit during JUUL vaping and if exposures produce symptoms dose dependently. This study examined chemical exposure (dose), retention, symptoms during vaping, and the environmental accumulation of exhaled propylene glycol (PG), glycerol (G), nicotine, and menthol in a cohort of human participants who vaped JUUL "Menthol" ECs. We refer to this environmental accumulation as "EC exhaled aerosol residue" (ECEAR). Chemicals were quantified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in JUUL pods before and after use, lab-generated aerosols, human exhaled aerosols, and in ECEAR. Unvaped JUUL "Menthol" pods contained ∼621.3 mg/mL of G, ∼264.9 mg/mL of PG, ∼59.3 mg/mL of nicotine, ∼13.3 mg/mL of menthol, and ∼0.1 mg/mL of the coolant WS-23. Eleven experienced male EC users (aged 21-26) provided exhaled aerosol and residue samples before and after vaping JUUL pods. Participants vaped ad libitum for 20 min, while their average puff count (22 ± 6.4) and puff duration (4.4 ± 2.0) were recorded. The transfer efficiency of nicotine, menthol, and WS-23 from the pod fluid into the aerosol varied with each chemical and was generally similar across flow rates (9-47 mL/s). At 21 mL/s, the average mass of each chemical retained by the participants who vaped 20 min was 53.2 ± 40.3 mg for G, 18.9 ± 14.3 mg for PG, 3.3 ± 2.7 mg for nicotine, and 0.5 ± 0.4 mg for menthol, with retention deduced to be ∼90-100% for each chemical. There was a significant positive relationship between the number of symptoms during vaping and total chemical mass retained. ECEAR accumulated on enclosed surfaces where it could contribute to passive exposure. These data will be valuable to researchers studying human exposure to EC aerosols and agencies that regulate EC products.

Abstract
Despite a growing body of research outlining the harms of thirdhand smoke (THS), the public remains generally unaware of risks and exposure routes. This project built on past tobacco prevention campaigns and the tenants of McGuire's input-output model to implement and evaluate a seven-month Facebook-disseminated campaign seeking to improve THS awareness among California adults (n = 1087). Multilinear regression showed that THS-related knowledge (χ2[6] = 19.31, p < .01), attitude (χ2[6] = 13.88, p < .05), and efficacy (χ2[6] = 13.81, p < .05) significantly increased by the campaign's end, with messages highlighting children's health (r = .110, p < .05), pets (r = .145, p < .01), and dust reservoirs (r = .144, p < .01) as the most persuasive. Path analysis modeling found campaign recall to be associated with changes in knowledge (β = .161, p < .01), which predicated attitude change (β = .614, p < .001) and, in turn, behavior change (β = .149, p < .05). Findings suggest social media campaigns should continue to educate diverse populations about new tobacco risks and that tobacco control advocates should consider integrating educational THS messages.

Abstract
Young children are particularly vulnerable to harms from tobacco smoke exposure (TSE). This study aimed to compare TSE: (1) between children who live in smoking families and those who do not; and (2) among children who live in smoking households with varying smoking locations. The data came from two studies that were conducted concurrently in Israel (2016-2018). Study 1: a randomized controlled trial of smoking families (n = 159); Study 2: a cohort study of TSE among children in non-smoking families (n = 20). Hair samples were collected from one child in each household. Baseline hair nicotine data were analyzed for 141 children in Study 1 and 17 children in Study 2. Using a logistic regression analysis (exposed vs. not exposed as per laboratory determination) and a linear regression (log hair nicotine), we compared TSE between: (1) children in Study 1 vs. Study 2; (2) children in families with different smoking locations in Study 1: balcony; garden, yard, or other place outside of the home; or inside the home (designated smoking areas within the home (DSAs) or anywhere). A higher proportion of children living in smoking households were measurably exposed to tobacco smoke (68.8%) compared to children living in non-smoking households (35.3%, p = 0.006). Among children from smoking families, 75.0% of those whose parents smoked in the house were exposed, while 61.8% of children whose parents restricted smoking to the porch (n = 55) were exposed, and 71.4% of those whose parents smoked outside the home (including gardens and yards) (n = 42) were exposed. In univariable and multivariable models, smoking location was not significantly associated with exposure. The majority of children in smoking families were measurably exposed to TSE, even if smoking was restricted to designated areas in the home, balconies, orgarden/yard/other outdoor areas. Reducing population smoking rates, particularly among parents, restricting smoking to at least 10 meters from homes and children, and denormalizing smoking around others are recommended to reduce population-level child TSE and tobacco-attributable disease and death.

Abstract
The adverse health effects of both active and passive tobacco smoke have been well-known in humans for a long time. It is presumable that even pets, which intimately share the owner's lifestyle, may be exposed to the same risks. This study aimed to detect and quantify cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) in the serum and hair of dogs using a specific commercial ELISA immunoassay kit. A total of 32 dogs, 16 exposed and 16 unexposed to the owner's smoke, were enrolled. The cotinine concentration was higher in the exposed than the unexposed group in both matrices (p < 0.001), with greater values in serum than in hair (p < 0.001). Exposed bitches had higher hair cotinine than male dogs (p < 0.001). Conversely, serum and fur cotinine concentrations were lower in female than male dogs of the unexposed group (p < 0.01). The exposure intensity, age, and weight of the dogs did not affect cotinine concentrations. A cut-off value of 2.78 ng/mL and 1.13 ng/mL cotinine concentration in serum and fur, respectively, was estimated to distinguish between the exposed and unexposed dogs. Cotinine was confirmed as a valuable marker of passive smoking also in dogs. Although owners do not perceive secondhand smoke as a risk for their dogs, greater awareness should be advisable, especially in pregnant animals.

Abstract
While the thirdhand smoke (THS) residue from tobacco smoke has been recognized as a distinct public health hazard, there are currently no gold standard biomarkers to differentiate THS from secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. This study used machine learning algorithms to assess which combinations of biomarkers and reported tobacco smoke exposure measures best differentiate children into three groups: no/minimal tobacco smoke exposure (NEG); predominant THS exposure (TEG); and mixed SHS and THS exposure (MEG). Participants were 4485 nonsmoking 3-17-year-olds from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2016. We fitted and tested random forest models, and the majority (76%) of children were classified in NEG, 16% were classified in TEG, and 8% were classified in MEG. The final classification model based on reported exposure, biomarker, and biomarker ratio variables had a prediction accuracy of 95%. This final model had prediction accuracies of 100% for NEG, 88% for TEG, followed by 71% for MEG. The most important predictors were the reported number of household smokers, serum cotinine, serum hydroxycotinine, and urinary 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL). In the absence of validated biomarkers specific to THS, comprehensive biomarker and questionnaire data for tobacco smoke exposure can distinguish children exposed to SHS and THS with high accuracy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thirdhand smoke is the toxic remnant, including pollutants and by-products, of tobacco smoke that remains in the environment after the use of tobacco products. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between the demographic characteristics and the beliefs about thirdhand smoke of medical faculty students. METHODS This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 392 medical faculty students at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University. All the participants completed the Beliefs About ThirdHand Smoke (BATHS) questionnaire. Demographic data such as age, gender, year of study, family income level, and place of residence were recorded and evaluated together with tobacco product usage status. Factors (demographic data such as gender) affecting the BATHS scale and sub-scales were analyzed using SPSS software. RESULTS The study included 392 medical students. The students comprised 59.7% females and 40.3% males. The students had never used tobacco products (68.1%), 13% were previous users, and 18.9% were active users. The majority of the students stated that thirdhand smoke was harmful to the health of children (90%) and adults (85%) and that thirdhand smoke could remain in a room for days (79%). When the relationships were evaluated between the BATHS scale overall and the health and permanence subscales, and the demographic characteristics of the students, no statistically significant difference was determined according to gender, place of residence, family income level, and tobacco use status. CONCLUSIONS This study has provided information for the first time about the beliefs of medical faculty students about thirdhand smoke, and the relationships were investigated between these beliefs and gender, place of residence, family income level, and tobacco use status. The results of the study demonstrated that the students had a strong awareness of the harm of thirdhand smoke and of environmental permanence, and these beliefs did not change according to their own tobacco use status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective was to assess the associations of child tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) biomarkers (urinary cotinine, NNAL, and nicotelline N-oxides) and parent-reported smoking and child TSE patterns with total hospital visits, pediatric emergency department (PED) visits, urgent care (UC), revisits, and hospital admissions among 0-9-year-olds. METHODS A convenience sample of PED/UC patients (N = 242) who presented to a large, US children's hospital who had baseline urine samples assayed for the TSE biomarkers of interest were included. Biomarker levels were log-transformed, and linear and Poisson regression models were built. RESULTS The geometric means of child cotinine, creatinine-adjusted NNAL, and N-oxide levels were 11.2 ng/ml, 30.9 pg/mg creatinine, and 24.1 pg/ml, respectively. The mean (SD) number of daily cigarettes smoked by parents was 10.2 (6.1) cigarettes. Each one-unit increase in log-NNAL levels was associated with an increase in total UC visits (aRR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.18-2.39) among 0-9-year-olds, while controlling for the covariates. Each one-unit increase in child log-NNAL/cotinine ratio (×103) values was associated with an increase in total hospital visits (aRR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.10-1.75) and UC visits (aRR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.14-2.13) over 6 months. CONCLUSION Systematic screening for child TSE should be conducted during all hospital visits. The comprehensive assessment of TSE biomarkers should be considered to objectively measure young children's exposure. IMPACT Higher levels of cotinine, a widely used tobacco smoke exposure biomarker, have been associated with higher healthcare utilization patterns among children. Less is known on the associations of carcinogenic and tobacco smoke-derived particulate matter biomarker uptake with child healthcare utilization patterns. This study assessed the associations of several biomarkers with healthcare utilization patterns among pediatric emergency department patients ages 0-9 years who lived with tobacco smokers. Higher urinary NNAL biomarker levels, in individual and ratio form with cotinine, increased children's risk for urgent care visits over 6 months. Higher parent-reported cumulative child tobacco smoke exposure increased children's risk for hospital admissions.

Abstract
Smoking is an addictive, chronic and relapsing disease that, due to its high prevalence, morbidity and mortality, has become one of the main public health problems worldwide, affecting both smokers and rest of population involuntarily exposed to smoke tobacco.To overcome this pandemic, it is essential that all health professionals intervene on the problem in a manner adapted to their level of care, from giving brief advice for stop smoking to proposing intensive cognitive-behavioral and pharmacological treatment.Smoking cessation treatments have proven to be safe and effective, but unfortunately, the personal and economic resources dedicated to smoker care are not proportional to the magnitude of the problem, with few specialized consultations and lack of funding for pharmacological treatments.In addition, we must confront the arguments of the tobacco industry that interferes in the fight against smoking with new products that they pretend to offer as «harm reduction strategies» when really it is their way of attracting new addicts to tobacco products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hand nicotine (HN) levels measure children's exposure to tobacco smoke pollutants from thirdhand and secondhand smoke. HN is associated with urinary and salivary cotinine, but the associations of HN with other tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) markers remain unknown. OBJECTIVES We compared levels of HN and four urinary TSE biomarkers: cotinine, trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (3HC), nicotelline N-oxides, and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL), and children's sociodemographic and TSE patterns. We also examined if HN is a plausible pathway for children's exposure to active smoking. METHODS Data were collected from 175 non-smoking patients (Mean (SD) age = 5.4 (3.4) years) who lived with ≥1 cigarette smoker(s). HN and TSE biomarker levels were determined using LC-MS/MS. Multivariate and multivariable regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between TSE markers and parent-reported measures, controlling for sociodemographics. RESULTS Of the five markers of TSE, cotinine (R2 = 0.221; p = 0.003) and HN (R2 = 0.247; p = 0.001) showed the strongest overall associations. Of the five markers, only cotinine showed significantly higher levels among Black children (β^=0.307,p<0.05) independent of age, reported exposure, and home smoking bans. Cotinine (β^=0.010,p<0.05), NNAL (β^=0.012,p<0.05), and HN (β^=0.011,p<0.05) showed significant positive associations with reported exposure independent of race, age, and home smoking bans. NNAL (β^=-0.285,p<0.05) and HN (β^=-0.336,p<0.05), but not cotinine, 3HC, and N-oxides, showed significantly lower levels among children who lived in homes with smoking bans. Child age, hand surface area, home smoking ban, and reported exposure independently accounted for 21 % of the variance in HN levels (p = 0.002). HN accounted for 30 % of the variance in cotinine independent of child race and child age. DISCUSSION HN levels were associated with modifiable tobacco-related behaviors and shows promise as a marker of sources of THS pollution in a child's environment not captured by measurement of urinary cotinine alone. HN levels provide additional information about TSE, complementing other biomarkers when assessing children's overall TSE.

Abstract
Conversion of hazardous compounds to value-added chemicals using clean energy possesses massive industrial interest. This applies especially to the hazardous compounds that are frequently released in daily life. In this work, a S-scheme photocatalyst is optimized by rational loading of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) during the synthetic process. As a bridge, the presence of CQDs between TiO2 and CdIn2S4 improves the electron extraction from TiO2 and supports the charge transport in S-scheme. Thanks to this, the TiO2/CQDs/CdIn2S4 presents outstanding photoactivity in converting the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released by cigarette to value-added benzaldehyde. The optimized photocatalyst performs 87.79% conversion rate and 72.76% selectivity in 1 h reaction under a simulated solar source, as confirmed by FT-IR and GC-MS. A combination of experiments and theoretical calculations are conducted to demonstrate the role of CQDs in TiO2/CQDs/CdIn2S4 toward photocatalysis.

Abstract
Almost 20 years after the launching by the Pan American Health Organization of its “Smoke-Free Americas” initiative in 2001, in December 2020, South America became the first subregion in the Americas to accomplish 100% smoke-free environments in line with Article 8 of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Some of these countries adopted legal measures that are more robust than others, including in their laws specific outdoor places in the smoking ban (like Argentina and Uruguay) and/or novel nicotine and tobacco products under their scope (like Ecuador and Paraguay). The 10 countries took different paths to adopt this public health measure, either through executive or legislative measures or a combination of both. A few countries, like Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela, started at the subnational level and then moved on to the national level, similar to the rest of the countries. For achieving this milestone, an adequate context was crucial: the broad ratification of the FCTC and the relevance given to the human right to health, civil society efforts, commitments made by intergovernmental bodies, media and communication strategies, and the development of scientific evidence. Countries faced obstacles, including the well-known interference of the tobacco industry, which among other strategies used litigation; however, courts and judges upheld comprehensive legal measures on smoke-free environments. The process by which South America achieved this milestone represents a role model for other subregions of the Americas and the world.
