Noncovalent Functionalization of Graphene and Graphene Oxide for Energy Materials, Biosensing, Catalytic, and Biomedical Applications

A Molecular Dynamics Study on the Defect Formation and Mechanical Behavior of Molybdenum Disulfide under Irradiation

Due to its appealing characteristics, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) presents a promising avenue for the exploration of lubrication protection materials in high-energy irradiation scenarios. Herein, we present a comprehensive investigation into the defect behavior of multilayer MoS2 under argon (Ar) atom irradiation leveraging molecular dynamics simulations. We have demonstrated the energy shifts and structural evolution in MoS2 upon irradiation, including the emergence of Frenkel defects and intricate defect clusters. The structural damage exhibits an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease as the incident kinetic energy increases, ultimately peaking at 2.5 keV. Moreover, we investigated the effect of postannealing on defect recovery and conducted the uniaxial tensile and interlayer shearing simulation in order to provide valuable insights for the defect evolution and its impact on mechanical and tribological properties. Furthermore, we have proposed the optimal annealing temperature. The current study reveals the atomic mechanisms underlying irradiation-induced damage on the structural integrity and mechanical performance of MoS2, thereby providing crucial guidance for its vital application in nuclear reactors and aerospace industries.

Graphene exfoliation using multidomain peptides

Liquid-phase exfoliation using biomolecules in aqueous solution is a promising approach to obtain high quality 2D nanosheets. For example, the well-studied graphene-binding peptide, P1 (sequence HSSYWYAFNNKT), has been previously investigated and shown to have a good ability to exfoliate graphene sheets in aqueous conditions under sonication, maintaining colloidal stability. Building on this, the biomolecular exfoliant and assembly motif (BEAM) peptide, that features a graphene-binding domain at one end and a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) binding domain at the other, separated by a 10-carbon fatty acid chain in the centre, is shown to exfoliate graphene sheets from bulk graphite in aqueous media. An in-depth examination of the ability of the BEAM to both facilitate sheet exfoliation under sonication conditions and also maintain colliodal stability is provided through molecular dynamics simulations. These findings open new possibilities for designing multi-functional molecules that can both exfoliate and organise 2D materials into heterostructures under ambient conditions in aqueous media.

Graphene and Natural Products: A Review of Antioxidant Properties in Graphene Oxide Reduction

This review article addresses the antioxidant properties of different natural products, including ascorbic acid, gallic acid, oxalic acid, L-glutathione (GSH), bacteriorhodopsin, green tea polyphenols, glucose, hydroxycinnamic acid, ethanoic acid, betanin, and L-glutathione, in the reduction of graphene oxide (rGO). rGO can cause damage to cells, including oxidative stress and inflammation, limiting its application in different sectors that use graphene, such as technologies used in medicine and dentistry. The natural substances reviewed have properties that help reduce this damage, neutralizing free radicals and maintaining cellular integrity. This survey demonstrates that the combination of these antioxidant compounds can be an effective strategy to minimize the harmful effects of rGO and promote cellular health.

Sensing, Imaging, and Therapeutic Strategies Endowing by Conjugate Polymers for Precision Medicine

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have promising applications in biomedical fields, such as disease monitoring, real-time imaging diagnosis, and disease treatment. As a promising luminescent material with tunable emission, high brightness and excellent stability, CPs are widely used as fluorescent probes in biological detection and imaging. Rational molecular design and structural optimization have broadened absorption/emission range of CPs, which are more conductive for disease diagnosis and precision therapy. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the application of CPs, aiming to elucidate their structural and functional relationships. The fluorescence properties of CPs and the mechanism of detection signal amplification are first discussed, followed by an elucidation of their emerging applications in biological detection. Subsequently, CPs-based imaging systems and therapeutic strategies are illustrated systematically. Finally, recent advancements in utilizing CPs as electroactive materials for bioelectronic devices are also investigated. Moreover, the challenges and outlooks of CPs for precision medicine are discussed. Through this systematic review, it is hoped to highlight the frontier progress of CPs and promote new breakthroughs in fundamental research and clinical transformation.

Single-Step Functionalization Strategy of Graphene Microtransistor Array with Chemically Modified Aptamers for Biosensing Applications

Graphene solution-gated field-effect transistors (gSGFETs) offer high potential for chemical and biochemical sensing applications. Among the current trends to improve this technology, the functionalization processes are gaining relevance for its crucial impact on biosensing performance. Previous efforts are focused on simplifying the attachment procedure from standard multi-step to single-step strategies, but they still suffer from overreaction, and impurity issues and are limited to a particular ligand. Herein, a novel strategy for single-step immobilization of chemically modified aptamers with fluorenylmethyl and acridine moieties, based on a straightforward synthetic route to overcome the aforementioned limitations is presented. This approach is benchmarked versus a standard multi-step strategy using thrombin as detection model. In order to assess the reliability of the functionalization strategies 48-gSGFETs arrays are employed to acquire large datasets with multiple replicas. Graphene surface characterization demonstrates robust and higher efficiency in the chemical coupling of the aptamers with the single-step strategy, while the electrical response evaluation validates the sensing capability, allowing to implement different alternatives for data analysis and reduce the sensing variability. In this work, a new tool capable of overcome the functionalization challenges of graphene surfaces is provided, paving the way toward the standardization of gSGFETs for biosensing purposes.

Shedding light on the use of graphene oxide-thiosemicarbazone hybrids towards the rapid immobilisation of methylene blue and functional coumarins

Coumarins, methylene blue derivatives, as well as related functional organic dyes have become prevalent tools in life sciences and biomedicine. Their intense blue fluorescence emission makes them ideal agents for a range of applications, yet an unwanted facet of the interesting biological properties of such probes presents a simultaneous environmental threat due to inherent toxicity and persistence in aqueous media. As such, significant research efforts now ought to focus on their removal from the environment, and the sustainable trapping onto widely available, water dispersible and processable adsorbent structures such as graphene oxides could be advantageous. Additionally, flat and aromatic bis(thiosemicarbazones) (BTSCs) have shown biocompatibility and chemotherapeutic potential, as well as intrinsic fluorescence, hence traceability in the environment and in living systems. A new palette of graphene oxide-based hierarchical supramolecular materials incorporating BTSCs were prepared, characterised, and reported hereby. We report on the supramolecular entrapping of several flat, aromatic fluorogenic molecules onto graphene oxide on basis of non-covalent interactions, by virtue of their structural features with potential to form aromatic stacks and H-bonds. The evaluations of the binding interactions in solution by between organic dyes (methylene blue and functional coumarins) and new graphene oxide-anchored Zn(ii) derivatised bis(thiosemicarbazones) nanohybrids were carried out by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Selectivity-Enhanced Electroreduction of CO2 to CO at Novel Ru-Linked-GO Nanohybrids: the Role of Nanoarchitecture

Recently, global-scale efforts have been conducted for the electroreduction of CO2 as a potentially beneficial pathway for the conversion of greenhouse gases to useful chemicals and renewable fuels. This study focuses on the development of selective and sustainable electrocatalysts for the reduction of aqueous CO2 to CO. A RuIIcomplex [Ru(tptz)(ACN)Cl2] (RCMP) (tptz = 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine, ACN = acetonitrile) was prepared as a molecular electrocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction in an aqueous solution. Density functional theory-calculated frontier molecular orbitals suggested that the tptz ligand plays a key role in dictating the electrocatalytic reactions. The RCMP electrocatalyst was grafted onto the graphene oxide (GO) surface both noncovalently (GO/RCMP) and covalently (GO-RCMP). The field emission scanning electron microscopy and elemental distribution analyses revealed the homogeneous distribution of the complex onto the GO sheet. The photoluminescence spectra confirmed accelerated charge-transfer in both nanohybrids. Compared to the bare complex, the GO-RCMP and GO/RCMP nanohybrids showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity, achieving >95% and 90% Faradaic efficiencies for CO production at more positive onset potentials, respectively. The GO-RCMP nanohybrid demonstrated outstanding electrocatalytic activity with a current of ∼84 μA. The study offers a perspective on outer- and inner-sphere electron-transfer mechanisms for electrochemical energy conversion systems.

Recent advances in the functionalization, substitutional doping and applications of graphene/graphene composite nanomaterials

Recently, graphene and graphene-based nanomaterials have emerged as advanced carbon functional materials with specialized unique electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties. These properties have made graphene an exceptional material for a wide range of promising applications in biological and non-biological fields. The present review illustrates the structural modifications of pristine graphene resulting in a wide variety of derivatives. The significance of substitutional doping with alkali-metals, alkaline earth metals, and III-VII group elements apart from the transition metals of the periodic table is discussed. The paper reviews various chemical and physical preparation routes of graphene, its derivatives and graphene-based nanocomposites at room and elevated temperatures in various solvents. The difficulty in dispersing it in water and organic solvents make it essential to functionalize graphene and its derivatives. Recent trends and advances are discussed at length. Controlled reduction reactions in the presence of various dopants leading to nanocomposites along with suitable surfactants essential to enhance its potential applications in the semiconductor industry and biological fields are discussed in detail.

Electron videography of a lipid-protein tango

Biological phenomena, from enzymatic catalysis to synaptic transmission, originate in the structural transformations of biomolecules and biomolecular assemblies in liquid water. However, directly imaging these nanoscopic dynamics without probes or labels has been a fundamental methodological challenge. Here, we developed an approach for "electron videography"-combining liquid phase electron microscopy with molecular modeling-with which we filmed the nanoscale structural fluctuations of individual, suspended, and unlabeled membrane protein nanodiscs in liquid. Systematic comparisons with biochemical data and simulation indicate the graphene encapsulation involved can afford sufficiently reduced effects of the illuminating electron beam for these observations to yield quantitative fingerprints of nanoscale lipid-protein interactions. Our results suggest that lipid-protein interactions delineate dynamically modified membrane domains across unexpectedly long ranges. Moreover, they contribute to the molecular mechanics of the nanodisc as a whole in a manner specific to the protein within. Overall, this work illustrates an experimental approach to film, quantify, and understand biomolecular dynamics at the nanometer scale.

Hydrogen Bonds Are Never of an "Anti-electrostatic" Nature: A Brief Tour of a Misleading Nomenclature

A large amount of scientific works have contributed through the years to rigorously reflect the different forces leading to the formation of hydrogen bonds, the electrostatic and polarization ones being the most important among them. However, we have witnessed lately with the emergence of a new terminology, anti-electrostatic hydrogen bonds (AEHBs), that seems to contradict this reality. This nomenclature is used in the literature to describe hydrogen bonds between equally charged systems to justify the existence of these species, despite numerous proofs showing that AEHBs are, as any other hydrogen bond between neutral species, mostly due to electrostatic forces. In this Viewpoint, we summarize the state of the art regarding this issue, try to explain why this terminology is very misleading, and strongly recommend avoiding its use based on the hydrogen bond physical grounds.

HsGDY 3D Framework-Encapsulated Cu2O Quantum Dots for High-Efficiency Energy Storage

Nanostructured electrode materials become a vital component for future electrode materials because of their short electron and ion transport distances for fast charge and discharge processes and sufficient space between particles for volume expansion. So, achieving a smaller size of the nanomaterial with stable structure and high electrode performance is always the pursuit. Herein, the hybrid electrode material system hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY)/Cu2O-quantum dots (QDs) composed of an active carbon substrate and vibrant metal oxide QD load was established by HsGDY and cuprous oxide. The HsGDY frame with conjugated structure not only delivers impressive capacity by a self-exchange mechanism but also characterizes a matrix to forge strong connections with numerous active Cu2O-QDs for the prevention of aggregation, leading to a homogeneous storage and transport of charge in a bulk material of crisscross structural pores. QD-based electrode materials would exhibit desired capacities by their large surface area, abundant active surface atoms, and the short diffusion pathway. The hybrid system of HsGDY/Cu2O-QDs delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 1230 mA h g-1 with loading density reaching up to 1 mg cm-2. In the meantime, the electrode exhibits a long cycle stability of over 8000 cycles. The synergistic effect endows the hybrid system electrode with an approximately theoretical energy density, suggesting the great potential of such carbon/QD hybrid material system applied for high-performance batteries.

Supramolecular complexation of C60 with branched polyethylene

Fullerene C60 is a ubiquitous material for application in organic electronics and nanotechnology, due to its desirable optoelectronic properties including good molecular orbital alignment with electron-rich donor materials, as well as high and isotropic charge carrier mobility. However, C60 possesses two limitations that hinder its integration into large-scale devices: (1) poor solubility in common organic solvents leading to expensive device processing, and (2) poor optical absorbance in the visible portion of the spectrum. Covalent functionalization has long been the standard for introducing structural tunability into molecular design, but non-covalent interactions have emerged as an alternative strategy to tailor C60-based materials, offering a versatile and tuneable alternative to novel functional materials and applications. In this work, we report a straightforward non-covalent functionalization of C60 with a branched polyethylene (BPE), which occurs spontaneously in dilute chloroform solution under ambient conditions. A detailed characterization strategy, based on UV-vis spectroscopy and size-exclusion chromatography was performed to verify and investigate the structure of the C60+BPE complex. Among others, our work reveals that the supramolecular complex has an order of magnitude higher molecular weight than its C60 and BPE constituents and points towards oxidation as the driving force behind complexation. The C60+BPE complex also possesses significantly broadened optical absorbance compared to unfunctionalized C60, extending further into the visible portion of the spectrum. This non-covalent approach presents an inexpensive route to address the shortcomings of C60 for electronic applications, situating the C60+BPE complex as a promising candidate for further investigation in organic electronic devices.

Tunable Structured 2D Nanobiocatalysts: Synthesis, Catalytic Properties and New Horizons in Biomedical Applications

2D materials have offered essential contributions to boosting biocatalytic efficiency in diverse biomedical applications due to the intrinsic enzyme-mimetic activity and massive specific surface area for loading metal catalytic centers. Since the difficulty of high-quality synthesis, the varied structure, and the tough choice of efficient surface loading sites with catalytic properties, the artificial building of 2D nanobiocatalysts still faces great challenges. Here, in this review, a timely and comprehensive summarization of the latest progress and future trends in the design and biotherapeutic applications of 2D nanobiocatalysts is provided, which is essential for their development. First, an overview of the synthesis-structure-fundamentals and structure-property relationships of 2D nanobiocatalysts, both metal-free and metal-based is provided. After that, the effective design of the active sites of nanobiocatalysts is discussed. Then, the progress of their applied research in recent years, including biomedical analysis, biomedical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology is systematically highlighted. Finally, future research directions of 2D nanobiocatalysts are prospected. Overall, this review to provide cutting-edge and multidisciplinary guidance for accelerating future developments and biomedical applications of 2D nanobiocatalysts is expected.

Tailored gelatin methacryloyl-based hydrogel with near-infrared responsive delivery of Qiai essential oils boosting reactive oxygen species scavenging, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities for diabetic wound healing

The management of diabetic wounds poses a substantial economic and medical burden for diabetic patients. Oxidative stress and persistent bacterial infections are considered to be the primary factors. Qiai essential oil (QEO) exhibits various pharmacological characteristics, including inflammatory-reducing, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Nevertheless, the hydrophobic nature and propensity for explosive release of this substance present constraints on its potential for future applications. Here, we developed a stimulus-responsive hydrogel to overcome the multiple limitations of QEO-based wound dressings. The QEO was encapsulated within graphene oxide (GO) through repeated extrusion using an extruder. Subsequently, QEO@GO nanoparticles were incorporated into a Gelatin-methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel. The QEO@GO-GelMA hydrogel demonstrated controlled release ablation, photothermal antibacterial effects, and contact ablation against two representative bacterial strains. It effectively reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, promoted angiogenesis, and decreased levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), thereby accelerating the healing process of diabetic wounds. In addition, in vitro and in vivo tests provided further evidence of the favorable biocompatibility of this multifunctional hydrogel dressing. Overall, the QEO@GO-GelMA hydrogel provides numerous benefits, encompassing antimicrobial properties, ROS-scavenging abilities, anti-inflammatory effects, and the capacity to expedite diabetic wound healing. These attributes make it an optimal choice for diabetic wound management.

Carbon Nanomaterial Fluorescent Probes and Their Biological Applications

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have broadly useful chemical and photophysical attributes that are conducive to applications in biology. In this review, we focus on materials whose photophysics allow for the use of these materials in biomedical and environmental applications, with emphasis on imaging, biosensing, and cargo delivery. The review focuses primarily on graphitic carbon nanomaterials including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, as well as carbon dots and carbon nanohoops. Recent advances in and future prospects of these fields are discussed at depth, and where appropriate, references to reviews pertaining to older literature are provided.

Atomic-Scale Imaging of Clay Mineral Nanosheets and Their Supramolecular Complexes through Electron Microscopy: A Supramolecular Chemist's Perspective

Recent advancements in electron microscopy techniques have revolutionized the ability to directly visualize and understand the intricate world of supramolecular chemistry. This paper provides a concise overview of a study delving into the atomic-scale imaging of monolayer clay mineral nanosheets and their associated supramolecular complexes. The imaging is conducted by harnessing the power of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Clay mineral nanosheets, with their anionic charge and ultrathin thickness (of 1 nm), serve as a stable Coulombic host material for cationic guest molecules through electrostatic interactions, facilitating exceptional stability and control during observation. By incorporation of heavy-metal atom markers coordinated within the target molecules, high-angle annular dark field STEM enables a clear visualization of these supramolecular complexes. This approach helps to overcome the limitations of graphene-based systems and expands the possibilities of atomic-scale imaging of nonperiodic molecular assemblies formed by weak supramolecular interactions. The fusion of electron microscopy techniques with the principles of supramolecular and material chemistry offers exciting opportunities for studying the structure, behavior, and properties of complex supramolecular systems. It sheds light on the intricate molecular architectures and design principles governing these systems. Graphene in 3D Bioprinting

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a fast prototyping fabrication approach that allows the development of new implants for tissue restoration. Although various materials have been utilized for this process, they lack mechanical, electrical, chemical, and biological properties. To overcome those limitations, graphene-based materials demonstrate unique mechanical and electrical properties, morphology, and impermeability, making them excellent candidates for 3D bioprinting. This review summarizes the latest developments in graphene-based materials in 3D printing and their application in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Over the years, different 3D printing approaches have utilized graphene-based materials, such as graphene, graphene oxide (GO), reduced GO (rGO), and functional GO (fGO). This process involves controlling multiple factors, such as graphene dispersion, viscosity, and post-curing, which impact the properties of the 3D-printed graphene-based constructs. To this end, those materials combined with 3D printing approaches have demonstrated prominent regeneration potential for bone, neural, cardiac, and skin tissues. Overall, graphene in 3D bioprinting may pave the way for new regenerative strategies with translational implications in orthopedics, neurology, and cardiovascular areas.

Anaerobic reduction of graphene oxide induces the release of sorbed organic contaminants and enhances environmental risk

Graphene oxide (GO) is an oxidized form of graphene-based materials with abundant hydrophilic oxygen-containing functional groups, forming well-dispersed suspensions and serving as pollution carriers. The natural anaerobic environment might alter the sorption behavior of GO, which in turn affects the fate and bioavailability of GO-sorbed organic contaminants. In this study, GO can be reduced by diverse environmental reductants, including sodium sulfide, DL-1,4-dithiothretiol, and L-cysteine, forming aggregates. Meanwhile, the GO-sorbed organic contaminants were released during the reduction process owing to the decreasing oxygen content and sorption sites. The effect of solution chemistry conditions (dissolved humic acid/HA and ionic strength) on the reduction release process was also investigated. HA reduced the release rate of organic contaminants due to its stabilization effect. Adding NaCl did not alter the release rate, while CaCl2 markedly enhanced the release rate. Toxicity tests with Bacillus subtilis indicated that releasing the pre-sorbed organic compound on GO led to a lower survival ratio and enhanced the superoxide dismutase activity. The findings of this study imply that the anaerobic environment could alter the dispersion/aggregation status of GO, affecting the sorption interaction between GO and the organic compounds and consequently influencing the toxicity and risk of pollution in the environment.

A supramolecular approach for converting renewable biomass into functional materials

The rational transformation and utilization of biomass have attracted increasing attention because of its high importance in sustainable development and green economy. In this study, we used a supramolecular approach to convert biomass into functional materials. Six biomass raw materials with distinct chemical structures and physical properties were copolymerized with thioctic acid (TA) to afford poly[TA-biomass]s. The solvent-free copolymerization leads to the convenient and quantitative fabrication of biomass-based versatile materials. The non-covalent bonding and reversible solid-liquid transitions in poly[TA-biomass]s endow them with diversified features, including thermal processability, 3D printing, wet and dry adhesion, recyclability, impact resistance, and antimicrobial activity. Benefiting from their good biocompatibility and nontoxicity, these biomass-based materials are promising candidates for biological applications.

Zn/Al layered double hydroxide and carboxymethyl cellulose composite beads as support for the catalytic gold nanoparticles and their applications in the reduction of nitroarenes

Until now, many efficient catalysts have been reported that are used for the reduction of nitroarenes. However, a catalyst reusability is a challenge that is often faced in practical environment. In this report, we designed a hydrogel composite (CMC-LDH), which act as support and making it possible to address this challenge. In this research work, zinc/aluminum based layered double hydroxides (Zn/Al LDH) have been assembled with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to prepare CMC/LDH hydrogel beads. The CMC/LDH hydrogel beads were prepared by the ionotropic gelation method. For CMC/LDH/Au preparation, the already prepared CMC/LDH beads were kept in gold ion (Au3+) solution, and their subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride (NaBH4). For the characterization of the prepared samples different instrumental techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were adopted. For the catalytic evaluation of CMC/LDH/Au, it was utilized as a catalyst in 4-NP and 4-NA reduction reactions. The continuity of the reaction was monitored by a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Rate constant (kapp) of 0.48474 min-1 and 0.7486 min-1 were obtained for 4-NP and 4-NA reduction, respectively. The hydrogel beads were recycled and reused for up to five successive cycles without significantly changing their catalytic efficiency.

Performance and mechanism of biochar@FeMg-LDH for efficient activation of persulfate for degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol in groundwater

Groundwater environments are complex, and traditional advanced oxidation technologies mainly based on free radicals have limitations such as poor selectivity and low interference resistance, making it difficult to efficiently degrade target pollutants in groundwater. Therefore, we developed a sludge-based biochar-supported FeMg-layered double hydroxide catalyst (BC@FeMg-LDH) for the catalytic degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) using persulfate (PDS) as an oxidant. The removal efficiency of the catalyst exceeded 95%, showing high oxidation activity in a wide pH range while being almost unaffected by reducing substances and ions in the environment. Meanwhile, under neutral conditions, the leaching of metal ions from BC@FeMg-LDH was minimal, thereby eliminating the risk of secondary pollution. According to quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, the main active species during BC@FeMg-LDH/PDS degradation of 2, 4-DCP is 1O2, indicating a non-radical reaction mechanism dominated by 1O2. Characterization techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealed that the carbonyl (C = O) and metal hydroxyl (M-OH) groups on the material surface were the main reactive sites mediating 1O2 generation. The 1O2 generation mechanism during the reaction involved ketone-like activation of carbonyl groups on the biochar surface and complexation of hydroxyl groups on the material surface with PDS, resulting in the formation of O2·- and further generation of 1O2. 1O2 exhibited high selectivity toward electron-rich organic compounds such as 2, 4-DCP and demonstrated strong interference resistance in complex groundwater environments. Therefore, BC@FeMg-LDH holds promising applications for the remediation of organic-contaminated groundwater.

Neurodiagnostic and neurotherapeutic potential of graphene nanomaterials

Graphene has emerged as a highly promising nanomaterial for a variety of advanced technologies, including batteries, energy, electronics, and biotechnologies. Its recent contribution to neurotechnology is particularly noteworthy because its superior conductivity, chemical resilience, biocompatibility, thermal stability, and scalable nature make it well-suited for measuring brain activity and plasticity in health and disease. Graphene-mediated compounds are microfabricated in two central methods: chemical processes with natural graphite and chemical vapor deposition of graphene in a film form. They are widely used as biosensors and bioelectronics for neurodiagnostic and neurotherapeutic purposes in several brain disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, stroke, glioma, epilepsy, tinnitus, and Alzheimer's disease. This review provides an overview of studies that have demonstrated the technical advances of graphene nanomaterials in neuroscientific and clinical applications. We also discuss current limitations and future demands in relation to the clinical application of graphene, highlighting its potential technological and clinical significance for treating brain disorders. Our review underscores the potential of graphene nanomaterials as powerful tools for advancing the understanding of the brain and developing new therapeutic strategies.

Enhancement of gas adsorption on transition metal ion-modified graphene using DFT calculations

CONTEXT

Graphene-based nanomaterial was widely used in gas sensors, detection, and separation. However, weak adsorption and low selectivity of the pristine graphene used for gas sensors are major problems. Here, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reported the significant increase of four gas molecules (N2, CO2, C2H2, and C2H4) adsorption on the transition metal ion (Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+)-modified graphene complex (Fe3+/Co2+/Ni2+-G) comparing to be absorbed on the pristine graphene (G). Moreover, the Co2+-G is suitable for the selective separation of C2H4/C2H2 due to the larger adsorption energy difference (8.5 kcal/mol) between them. The addition of transition metal ions also decreased the HOMO-LUMO gap of the systems, which benefits the enhancement of electrical conductivity. This suggests that the transition metal ion-modified graphene can be used to distinguish the different gas molecule's adsorption, facilitating the design of graphene-based gas sensors and selective separation.

METHODS

All the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed by B3LYP with the GD3 dispersion method using Gaussian 16 software. The basis set 6-31G(d) was used for C, H, O, and N atoms, and Lanl2DZ was used for transition metal ions (Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+). The DOS analysis and energy decomposition analysis were performed using the Multiwfn program.

Using Machine Learning to Overcome Interfering Oxygen Effects in a Graphene Volatile Organic Compound Sensor

Discriminating between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for applications including disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring, is often complicated by the presence of interfering compounds such as oxygen. Graphene sensors are effective at detecting VOCs; however, they are also known to be highly sensitive to oxygen. Therefore, the combined effects of each of these gases on graphene sensors must be understood. In this work, we use graphene variable capacitor (varactor) sensors to examine the cross-selectivity of oxygen at 3 concentrations and 3 VOCs (ethanol, methanol, and methyl ethyl ketone) at 5 concentrations each. The sensor responses exhibit distinct shapes dependent on the relative concentrations in mixtures of oxygen and VOCs. Because the entire response shape is therefore informative for distinguishing between each gas mixture, a classification algorithm that utilizes entire sequences of data is needed. Accordingly, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used to classify the mixtures and VOC concentrations. The model achieves 100% accurate classification of the VOC type, even in the presence of varying levels of oxygen. When the VOC type and VOC concentration are classified, we show that the sensors can provide VOC concentration resolution within approximately 200 ppm. Throughout this work, we also demonstrate that an effective gas mixture classification can be achieved, even while the sensors exhibit varied drift patterns typical of graphene sensors. This is made possible due to the data analysis and machine learning methods employed.

On-Site Fluorescent Detection of Sepsis-Inducing Bacteria using a Graphene-Oxide CRISPR-Cas12a (GO-CRISPR) System

Sepsis is an extremely dangerous medical condition that emanates from the body's response to a pre-existing infection. Early detection of sepsis-inducing bacterial infections can greatly enhance the treatment process and potentially prevent the onset of sepsis. However, current point-of-care (POC) sensors are often complex and costly or lack the ideal sensitivity for effective bacterial detection. Therefore, it is crucial to develop rapid and sensitive biosensors for the on-site detection of sepsis-inducing bacteria. Herein, we developed a graphene oxide CRISPR-Cas12a (GO-CRISPR) biosensor for the detection of sepsis-inducing bacteria in human serum. In this strategy, single-stranded (ssDNA) FAM probes were quenched with single-layer graphene oxide (GO). Target-activated Cas12a trans-cleavage was utilized for the degradation of the ssDNA probes, detaching the short ssDNA probes from GO and recovering the fluorescent signals. Under optimal conditions, we employed our GO-CRISPR system for the detection of Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) with a detection sensitivity of as low as 3 × 103 CFU/mL in human serum, as well as a good detection specificity toward other competing bacteria. In addition, the GO-CRISPR biosensor exhibited excellent sensitivity to the detection of S. Typhimurium in spiked human serum. The GO-CRISPR system offers superior rapidity for the detection of sepsis-inducing bacteria and has the potential to enhance the early detection of bacterial infections in resource-limited settings, expediting the response for patients at risk of sepsis.

Probing Polymorphic Stacking Domains in Mechanically Exfoliated Two-Dimensional Nanosheets Using Atomic Force Microscopy and Ultralow-Frequency Raman Spectroscopy

As one of the key features of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, stacking order has been found to play an important role in modulating the interlayer interactions of 2D materials, potentially affecting their electronic and other properties as a consequence. In this work, ultralow-frequency (ULF) Raman spectroscopy, electrostatic force microscopy (EFM), and high-resolution atomic force microscopy (HR-AFM) were used to systematically study the effect of stacking order on the interlayer interactions as well as electrostatic screening of few-layer polymorphic molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) nanosheets. The stacking order difference was first confirmed by measuring the ULF Raman spectrum of the nanosheets with polymorphic stacking domains. The atomic lattice arrangement revealed using HR-AFM also clearly showed a stacking order difference. In addition, EFM phase imaging clearly presented the distribution of the stacking domains in the mechanically exfoliated nanosheets, which could have arisen from electrostatic screening. The results indicate that EFM in combination with ULF Raman spectroscopy could be a simple, fast, and high-resolution method for probing the distribution of polymorphic stacking domains in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide materials. Our work might be promising for correlating the interlayer interactions of TMDC nanosheets with stacking order, a topic of great interest with regard to modulating their optoelectronic properties.

Scalable Production of Highly Conductive 2D NbSe2 Monolayers with Superior Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performance

Thin, flexible, and electrically conductive films are in demand for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Two-dimensional NbSe2 monolayers have an electrical conductivity comparable to those of metals (106-107 S m-1) but are challenging for high-quality and scalable production. Here, we show that electrochemical exfoliation of flake NbSe2 powder produces monolayers on a large scale (tens of grams), at a high yield (>75%, monolayer), and with a large average lateral size (>20 μm). The as-exfoliated NbSe2 monolayer flakes are easily dispersed in diverse organic solvents and solution-processed into various macroscopic structures (e.g., free-standing films, coatings, patterns, etc.). Thermal annealing of the free-standing NbSe2 films reduces the interlayer distance of restacked NbSe2 from 1.18 to 0.65 nm and consequently enhances the electrical conductivity to 1.16 × 106 S m-1, which is superior to those of MXenes and reduced graphene oxide. The optimized NbSe2 film shows an EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 65 dB at a thickness of 5 μm (>110 dB for a 48-μm-thick film), among the highest in materials of similar thicknesses. Moreover, a laminate of two layers of the NbSe2 film (2 μm thick) with an insulating interlayer shows a high SE of 85 dB, surpassing that of the 20-μm-thick NbSe2 film (83 dB). A two-layer theoretical model is proposed, and it agrees with the experimental EMI SE of the laminated NbSe2 films. The ability to produce NbSe2 monolayers on a tens of grams scale will enable their diverse applications beyond EMI shielding.

Synthesis and Characterization of Graphene Oxide/Polyethylene Glycol/Folic Acid/Brucine Nanocomposites and Their Anticancer Activity on HepG2 Cells

Background

Liver cancer is the sixth most prevalent form of cancer and the second major cause of cancer-associated mortalities worldwide. Cancer nanotechnology has the ability to fundamentally alter cancer treatment, diagnosis, and detection.

Objective

In this study, we explained the development of graphene oxide/polyethylene glycol/folic acid/brucine nanocomposites (GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs) and evaluated their antimicrobial and anticancer effect on the liver cancer HepG2 cells.

Methodology

The GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs were prepared using the co-precipitation technique and characterized using various techniques. The cytotoxicity of the GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs was tested against both liver cancer HepG2 and non-malignant Vero cells using an MTT assay. The antimicrobial activity of the GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs was tested against several pathogens using the well diffusion technique. The effects of GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs on endogenous ROS accumulation, apoptosis, and MMP levels were examined using corresponding fluorescent staining assays, respectively. The apoptotic protein expressions, such as Bax, Bcl-2, and caspases, were studied using the corresponding kits.

Results

The findings of various characterization assays revealed the development of GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs with face-centered spherical morphology and an agglomerated appearance with an average size of 197.40 nm. The GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs treatment remarkably inhibited the growth of the tested pathogens. The findings of the MTT assay evidenced that the GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs effectively reduced the HepG2 cell growth while not showing toxicity to the Vero cells. The findings of the fluorescent assay proved that the GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs increased ROS generation, reduced MMP levels, and promoted apoptosis in the HepG2 cells. The levels of Bax, caspase-9, and -3 were increased, and Bcl-2 was reduced in the GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs-treated HepG2 cells.

Conclusion

The results of this work demonstrate that GO/PEG/Bru-FA NCs suppress viability and induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells, indicating their potential as an anticancer candidate.

Metallic nanostructure-based aptasensors for robust detection of proteins

There is a significant need for fast, cost-effective, and highly sensitive protein target detection, particularly in the fields of food, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. The integration of high-affinity aptamers with metal-based nanomaterials has played a crucial role in advancing the development of innovative aptasensors tailored for the precise detection of specific proteins. Aptamers offer several advantages over commonly used molecular recognition methods, such as antibodies. Recently, a variety of metal-based aptasensors have been established. These metallic nanomaterials encompass noble metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, metal-carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, graphene-conjugated metallic nanostructures, as well as their nanocomposites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and MXenes. In general, these materials provide enhanced sensitivity through signal amplification and transduction mechanisms. This review primarily focuses on the advancement of aptasensors based on metallic materials for the highly sensitive detection of protein targets, including enzymes and growth factors. Additionally, it sheds light on the challenges encountered in this field and outlines future prospects. We firmly believe that this review will offer a comprehensive overview and fresh insights into metallic nanomaterials-based aptasensors and their capabilities, paving the way for the development of innovative point-of-care (POC) diagnostic devices.

Chemical Method for Recovery and Regeneration of Graphene Oxide

Graphene oxide (GO) has been developed as a very effective medium for filtration and removal of microbial contaminants in fuel. GO is capable of filtering out microorganisms without needing micrometer and submicrometer pores for filtration. Our previous studies showed that microorganisms are attracted by GO and bind irreversibly to GO without promoting bacterial growth. Therefore, GO was tested as a filter medium to remove microorganisms in fuel. The characterization results showed that GO removed microbes in diesel fuel with >99% efficiency. However, the synthesis of GO using Hummers' method is labor intensive and a time-consuming. We present in this paper an economical, less labor intensive and a simple chemical approach to recover GO after it has been used as a filtration medium for the removal of microorganisms in fuels. In the GO recovery process, microbial and fuel contaminated GO is washed with hexane to remove any fuel from the GO sample. The hexane-washed GO is further washed with acetone and mixed with ethanol to kill and remove any microorganisms. After washing with ethanol, the GO sample is sonicated in water to remove impurities and re-establish the oxygen functionalities. The final recovered-GO (rec-GO) is obtained after removing water by rotary evaporation. The chemical characterization of rec-GO showed that rec-GO is similar in both chemical and physical properties compared to freshly synthesized-GO (as-syn-GO). Rec-GO was shown to perform similarly to as-syn-GO in filtration of biocontaminated fuel. We estimate that our rec-GO is at least 90% cheaper than high quality commercially available GO.

Enhancing Photoredox Catalysis in Aqueous Environments: Ruthenium Aqua Complex Derivatization of Graphene Oxide and Graphite Rods for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Hybrid Catalysts

A ruthenium aqua photoredox catalyst has been successfully heterogeneneized on graphene oxide (GO@trans-fac-3) and graphite rods (GR@trans-fac-3) for the first time and have proven to be sustainable and easily reusable systems for the photooxidation of alcohols in water, in mild and green conditions. We report here the synthesis and total characterization of two Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes, the chlorido trans-fac-[RuCl(bpea-pyrene)(bpy)](PF6) (trans-fac-2) and the aqua trans-fac-[Ru(bpea-pyrene)(bpy)OH2](PF6)2 (trans-fac-3), both containing the N-tridentate, 1-[bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)amino]methylpyrene (bpea-pyrene), and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligands. In both complexes, only a single isomer, the trans-fac, has been detected in solution and in the solid state. The aqua complex trans-fac-3 displays bielectronic redox processes in water, assigned to the Ru(IV/II) couple. The trans-fac-3 complex has been heterogenized on different types of supports, (i) on graphene oxide (GO) through π-stacking interactions between the pyrene group of the bpea-pyrene ligand and the GO and (ii) both on glassy carbon electrodes (GC) and on graphite rods (GR) through oxidative electropolymerization of the pyrene group, which yield stable heterogeneous photoredox catalysts. GO@trans-fac-3- and GR/poly trans-fac-3-modified electrodes were fully characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. Trans-fac-3 and GO@trans-fac-3 photocatalysts (without a photosensitizer) showed good catalytic efficiency in the photooxidation of alcohols in water under mild conditions and using visible light. Both photocatalysts display high selectivity values (>99%) even for primary alcohols in accordance with the presence of two-electron transfer processes (2e-/2H+). GO@trans-fac-3 keeps intact its homogeneous catalytic properties but shows an enhancement in yields. GO@trans-fac-3 can be easily recycled by filtration and reused for up to five runs without any significant loss of catalytic activity. Graphite rods (GR@trans-fac-3) were also evaluated as heterogeneous photoredox catalysts showing high turnover numbers (TON) and selectivity values.

Challenges for Field-Effect-Transistor-Based Graphene Biosensors

Owing to its outstanding physical properties, graphene has attracted attention as a promising biosensor material. Field-effect-transistor (FET)-based biosensors are particularly promising because of their high sensitivity that is achieved through the high carrier mobility of graphene. However, graphene-FET biosensors have not yet reached widespread practical applications owing to several problems. In this review, the authors focus on graphene-FET biosensors and discuss their advantages, the challenges to their development, and the solutions to the challenges. The problem of Debye screening, in which the surface charges of the detection target are shielded and undetectable, can be solved by using small-molecule receptors and their deformations and by using enzyme reaction products. To address the complexity of sample components and the detection mechanisms of graphene-FET biosensors, the authors outline measures against nonspecific adsorption and the remaining problems related to the detection mechanism itself. The authors also introduce a solution with which the molecular species that can reach the sensor surfaces are limited. Finally, the authors present multifaceted approaches to the sensor surfaces that provide much information to corroborate the results of electrical measurements. The measures and solutions introduced bring us closer to the practical realization of stable biosensors utilizing the superior characteristics of graphene.

Recent advances in cellulose- and alginate-based hydrogels for water and wastewater treatment: A review

From the environmental perspective, it is essential to develop cheap, eco-friendly, and highly efficient materials for water and wastewater treatment. In this regard, hydrogels and hydrogel-based composites have been widely employed to mitigate global water pollution as this methodology is simple and free from harmful by-products. Notably, alginate and cellulose, which are natural carbohydrate polymers, have gained great attention for their availability, price competitiveness, excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, and superior physicochemical performance in water treatment. This review outlined the recent progress in developing and applying alginate- and cellulose-based hydrogels to remove various pollutants such as dyes, heavy metals, oils, pharmaceutical contaminants, and pesticides from wastewater streams. This review also highlighted the effects of various physical or chemical methods, such as crosslinking, grafting, the addition of fillers, nanoparticle incorporation, and polymer blending, on the physiochemical and adsorption properties of hydrogels. In addition, this review covered the alginate- and cellulose-based hydrogels' current limitations such as low mechanical performance and poor stability, while presenting strategies to improve the drawbacks of the hydrogels. Lastly, we discussed the prospects and future directions of alginate- and cellulose-based hydrogels. We hope this review provides valuable insights into the efficient preparations and applications of hydrogels.

Graphene-Based Nanomaterials and Their Interactions with Lipid Membranes

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GNMs) have captured increasing attention in the recent advancement of materials science and nanotechnology owing to their excellent physicochemical properties. Despite having unquestionable advances, the application of GNMs in biological and medical sciences is still limited due to the lack of knowledge and precise control over their interaction with the biological milieu. The cellular membrane is the first barrier with which GNMs interact before entering a cell. Therefore, understanding how they interact with cell membranes is important from the perspective of safe use in biological and biomedical fields. In this review, we systematically summarize the recent efforts in predicting the interactions between GNMs and model cellular membranes. This review provides insights into how GNMs interact with lipid membranes and self-assemble in and around them. Both the computational simulations and experimental observations are summarized. The interactions are classified depending on the physicochemical properties (structure, chemistry, and orientation) of GNMs and various model membranes. The thermodynamic parameters, structural details, and supramolecular forces are listed to understand the interactions which would help circumvent potential risks and provide guidance for safe use in the future. At the end of this review, future prospective and emerging challenges in this research field are discussed.

Nanocomposite Hydrogels with Self-Assembling Peptide-Functionalized Carbon Nanostructures

Carbon nanostructures (CNSs) are attractive components to attain nanocomposites, yet their hydrophobic nature and strong tendency to aggregate often limit their use in aqueous conditions and negatively impact their properties. In this work, carbon nanohorns (CNHs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene (G) are first oxidized, and then reacted to covalently anchor the self-assembling tripeptide L-Leu-D-Phe-D-Phe to improve their dispersibility in phosphate buffer, and favor the formation of hydrogels formed by the self-organizing L-Leu-D-Phe-D-Phe present in solution. The obtained nanocomposites are then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), oscillatory rheology, and conductivity measurements to gain useful insights as to the key factors that determine self-healing ability for the future design of this type of nanocomposites.

Chiral organic molecular structures supported by planar surfaces

We employ the molecular dynamics simulations to study the dynamics of acetanilide (ACN) molecules placed on a flat surface of planar multilayer hexagonal boron nitride. We demonstrate that the ACN molecules, known to be achiral in the three-dimensional space, become chiral after being placed on the substrate. Homochirality of the ACN molecules leads to stable secondary structures stabilized by hydrogen bonds between peptide groups of the molecules. By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that the structure of the resulting hydrogen-bond chains depends on the isomeric composition of the molecules. If all molecules are homochiral (i.e., with only one isomer being present), they form secondary structures (chains of hydrogen bonds in the shapes of arcs, circles, and spirals). If the molecules at the substrate form a racemic mixture, then no regular secondary structures appear, and only curvilinear chains of hydrogen bonds of random shapes emerge. A hydrogen-bond chain can form a zigzag array only if it has an alternation of isomers. Such chains can create two-dimensional (2D) regular lattices or 2D crystals. The melting scenarios of such 2D crystals depend on density of its coverage of the substrate. At 25% coverage, melting occurs continuously in the temperature interval 295-365 K. For a complete coverage, melting occurs at 415-470 K due to a shift of 11% of all molecules into the second layer of the substrate.

Graphene oxide as novel vaccine adjuvant

To improve antigen immunogenicity and promote long-lasting immunity, vaccine formulations have been appropriately supplemented with adjuvants. Graphene has been found to enhance the presentation of antigens to CD8+ T cells, as well as stimulating innate immune responses and inflammatory factors. Its properties, such as large surface area, water stability, and high aspect ratio, make it a suitable candidate for delivering biological substances. Graphene-based nanomaterials have recently attracted significant attention as a new type of vaccine adjuvants due to their potential role in the activation of immune responses. Due to the limited functionality of some approved human adjuvants for use, the development of new all-purpose adjuvants is urgently required. Research on the immunological and biomedical use of graphene oxide (GO) indicates that these nanocarriers possess excellent physicochemical properties, acceptable biocompatibility, and a high capacity for drug loading. Graphene-based nanocarriers also could improve the function of some immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages through specific signaling pathways. However, GO injection can lead to significant oxidative stress and inflammation. Various surface functionalization protocols have been employed to reduce possible adverse effects of GO, such as aggregation of GO in biological liquids and induce cell death. Furthermore, these modifications enhance the properties of functionalized-GO's qualities, making it an excellent carrier and adjuvant. Shedding light on different physicochemical and structural properties of GO and its derivatives has led to their application in various therapeutic and drug delivery fields. In this review, we have endeavored to elaborate on different aspects of GO.

Therapeutic applications of carbon nanomaterials in renal cancer

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and nanodiamonds (NDs), have shown great promise in detecting and treating numerous cancers, including kidney cancer. CNMs can increase the sensitivity of diagnostic techniques for better kidney cancer identification and surveillance. They enable targeted medicine delivery specifically to tumour locations, with little effect on healthy tissue. Because of their unique chemical and physical characteristics, they can avoid the body's defence mechanisms, making it easier to accumulate where tumours exist. Consequently, CNMs provide more effective drug delivery to kidney cancer cells. It also helps in improving the efficacy of treatment. This review explores the potential of several CNMs in improving therapeutic strategies for kidney cancer. We briefly covered the physicochemical properties and therapeutic applications of CNMs. Additionally, we discussed how structural modifications in CNMs enhance their precision in treating renal cancer. A thorough overview of CNM-based gene, peptide, and drug delivery strategies for the treatment of renal cancer is presented in this review. It covers information on other CNM-based therapeutic approaches, such as hyperthermia, photodynamic therapy, and photoacoustic therapy. Also, the interactions of CNMs with the tumour microenvironment (TME) are explored, including modulation of the immune response, regulation of tumour hypoxia, interactions between CNMs and TME cells, effects of TME pH on CNMs, and more. Finally, potential side effects of CNMs, such as toxicity, bio corona formation, enzymatic degradation, and biocompatibility, are also discussed.

Nanomaterial surface modification toolkit: Principles, components, recipes, and applications

Surface-functionalized nanostructures are at the forefront of biotechnology, providing new opportunities for biosensors, drug delivery, therapy, and bioimaging applications. The modification of nanostructures significantly impacts the performance and success of various applications by enabling selective and precise targeting. This review elucidates widely practiced surface modification strategies, including click chemistry, cross-coupling, silanization, aldehyde linkers, active ester chemistry, maleimide chemistry, epoxy linkers, and other protein and DNA-based methodologies. We also delve into the application-focused landscape of the nano-bio interface, emphasizing four key domains: therapeutics, biosensing, environmental monitoring, and point-of-care technologies, by highlighting prominent studies. The insights presented herein pave the way for further innovations at the intersection of nanotechnology and biotechnology, providing a useful handbook for beginners and professionals. The review draws on various sources, including the latest research articles (2018-2023), to provide a comprehensive overview of the field.

Photocatalytic Antimicrobials: Principles, Design Strategies, and Applications

Nowadays, the increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms requires the search for alternative methods that do not cause drug resistance. Phototherapy strategies (PTs) based on the photoresponsive materials have become a new trend in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms due to their spatiotemporal controllability and negligible side effects. Among those phototherapy strategies, photocatalytic antimicrobial therapy (PCAT) has emerged as an effective and promising antimicrobial strategy in recent years. In the process of photocatalytic treatment, photocatalytic materials are excited by different wavelengths of lights to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or other toxic species for the killing of various pathogenic microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and algae. Therefore, this review timely summarizes the latest progress in the PCAT field, with emphasis on the development of various photocatalytic antimicrobials (PCAMs), the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms, the design strategies, and the multiple practical antimicrobial applications in local infections therapy, personal protective equipment, water purification, antimicrobial coatings, wound dressings, food safety, antibacterial textiles, and air purification. Meanwhile, we also present the challenges and perspectives of widespread practical implementation of PCAT as antimicrobial therapeutics. We hope that as a result of this review, PCAT will flourish and become an effective weapon against pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic resistance.

Surface Modification Functionalized Carbon Dots

Carbon dots (CDs) smaller than 10 nm constitute a new type of fluorescent carbon-based nanomaterial. They have attracted much attention owing to their unique structures and excellent photoelectric properties. Primitive CDs usually comprise carbon and oxygen and are synthesized in one step from various natural products or synthetic organic compounds, usually via microwave or hydrothermal methods. However, the uniformity of surface functional groups often make CDs lack the diversity of active sites required for specific applications. Therefore, the functionalization of CDs by specific groups is a powerful strategy for improving their photophysical and photochemical properties. This paper reviews surface modification strategies to overcome these shortcomings. Functionalizing CDs using covalent or non-covalent modification can give them unique properties and broaden their applicability.

Advances in Biocarbon and Soft Material Assembly for Enthalpy Storage: Fundamentals, Mechanisms, and Multimodal Applications

High-value-added biomass materials like biocarbon are being actively pursued integrating them with soft materials in a broad range of advanced renewable energy technologies owing to their advantages, such as lightweight, relatively low-cost, diverse structural engineering applications, and high energy storage potential. Consequently, the hybrid integration of soft and biomass-derived materials shall store energy to mitigate intermittency issues, primarily through enthalpy storage during phase change. This paper introduces the recent advances in the development of natural biomaterial-derived carbon materials in soft material assembly and its applications in multidirectional renewable energy storage. Various emerging biocarbon materials (biochar, carbon fiber, graphene, nanoporous carbon nanosheets (2D), and carbon aerogel) with intrinsic structures and engineered designs for enhanced enthalpy storage and multimodal applications are discussed. The fundamental design approaches, working mechanisms, and feature applications, such as including thermal management and electromagnetic interference shielding, sensors, flexible electronics and transparent nanopaper, and environmental applications of biocarbon-based soft material composites are highlighted. Furthermore, the challenges and potential opportunities of biocarbon-based composites are identified, and prospects in biomaterial-based soft materials composites are presented.

Biomass-Derived Carbonaceous Materials with Graphene/Graphene-Like Structures: Definition, Classification, and Environmental Applications

Biomass-derived carbonaceous materials with graphene/graphene-like structures (BGS) have attracted tremendous attention in the field of environmental remediation. The introduction of graphene/graphene-like structures into raw biochars can effectively improve their properties, such as electrical conductivity, surface functional groups, and catalytic activity. In 2021, the International Organization for Standardization defined graphene as a "single layer of carbon atoms with each atom bound to three neighbours in a honeycomb structure". Considering this definition, several studies have incorrectly referred to BGS (e.g., biomass-derived few-layer graphene or porous graphene-like nanosheets) as "graphene". The definitions and classifications of BGS and their applications in environmental remediation have not been assessed critically thus far. Comprehensive analysis and sufficient and robust evidence are highly desired to accurately determine the specific structures of BGS. In this perspective, we provide a systematic framework to define and classify the BGS. The state-of-the-art methods currently used to determine the structural properties of BGS are scrutinized. We then discuss the design and fabrication of BGS and how their distinctive features could improve the applicability of biomass-derived carbonaceous materials, particularly in environmental remediation. The environmental applications of these BGS are highlighted, and future research opportunities and needs are identified. The fundamental insights in this perspective provide critical guidance for the further development of BGS for a wide range of environmental applications.

2D Nanomaterials and Their Drug Conjugates for Phototherapy and Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy of Cancer and Infections

Photothermal therapy (PTT) and magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT) using 2D nanomaterials (2DnMat) have recently emerged as promising alternative treatments for cancer and bacterial infections, both important global health challenges. The present review intends to provide not only a comprehensive overview, but also an integrative approach of the state-of-the-art knowledge on 2DnMat for PTT and MHT of cancer and infections. High surface area, high extinction coefficient in near-infra-red (NIR) region, responsiveness to external stimuli like magnetic fields, and the endless possibilities of surface functionalization, make 2DnMat ideal platforms for PTT and MHT. Most of these materials are biocompatible with mammalian cells, presenting some cytotoxicity against bacteria. However, each material must be comprehensively characterized physiochemically and biologically, since small variations can have significant biological impact. Highly efficient and selective in vitro and in vivo PTTs for the treatment of cancer and infections are reported, using a wide range of 2DnMat concentrations and incubation times. MHT is described to be more effective against bacterial infections than against cancer therapy. Despite the promising results attained, some challenges remain, such as improving 2DnMat conjugation with drugs, understanding their in vivo biodegradation, and refining the evaluation criteria to measure PTT or MHT effects.

Composite porphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymer/graphene oxide capable of photo-triggered combinational antibacterial therapy and wound healing

Developing antibiotic-free treatment strategies to cope with the crisis on drug-resistant bacteria, are urgently needed. Antibiotics-independent physical approaches, especially the non-invasive phototherapies, worked through the assistance of photosensitizer (PS), have geared intensive attention and interests. Here, composite porphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymer/graphene oxide, denoted as GO-TAPP, combining the advantages of each component perfectly, was developed as broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. GO-TAPP, prepared via the self-oxidation coupling of tetraethynyl porphyrin on the surface of graphene oxide, could exert synergistic photothermal (PTT, ascribed to the graphene) and photodynamic (PDT, derived from the Porphyrin polymer) antimicrobial effectiveness. Both the in vivo and in vitro experiments have confirmed GO-TAPP are extremely potent against the Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) pathogens, which presents a remarkably enhanced sterilizing effect in comparison with its counterparts (the bare GO, and TAPP). Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of GO-TAPP could significantly accelerate the healing of open wound infected by bacterial. Altogether, this work proposed a new approach for the rational preparation of highly biocompatible graphene-based composite materials as antibiotic-free agents with synergistic antibacterial effect to combat bacterial infections.

MoSe2 @rGO as Highly Efficient Host and Catalyst for Li-Organosulfide Battery

Organosulfides are promising high-capacity cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. However, sluggish kinetics and inferior utilization impede its practical application in batteries. Rationally designing redox mediators and identifying their active moieties remain formidable challenges. Currently, as a rising star of transition metal dichalcogenides, few-layered MoSe2 decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (MoSe2 @rGO) with high electronic conductivity and narrow energy band is used to manipulate electrocatalytic redox kinetics of organosulfides, thereby enhancing the battery performance. Here, an exotic MoSe2 @rGO is reported with Se defects material obtained from 2D MoSe2 growing on rGO for Li-dipentamethylenethiuram tetrasulfide (Li-PMTT) batteries. MoSe2 @rGO with Se defects has a large specific surface area, and sufficient pores, as well as exce llent catalytic ability for organosulfides conversion reactions. Therefore, the PMTT@MoSe2 @rGO cathode delivers a high reversible capacity of 405 mAh g-1 in the first cycle at 0.5 C and can maintain 238.3 mAh g-1 specific capacity after 300 cycles. This work offers an understanding of organosulfides electrochemistry toward fast and durable performance, holding great promise for developing practically feasible lithium-organosulfides battery material designs.

Carbon Nanomaterial-Based Hydrogels as Scaffolds in Tissue Engineering: A Comprehensive Review

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) are a category of nanomaterials with various systems based on combinations of sp2 and sp3 hybridized carbon bonds, morphologies, and functional groups. CBNs can exhibit distinguished properties such as high mechanical strength, chemical stability, high electrical conductivity, and biocompatibility. These desirable physicochemical properties have triggered their uses in many fields, including biomedical applications. In this review, we specifically focus on applying CBNs as scaffolds in tissue engineering, a therapeutic approach whereby CBNs can act for the regeneration or replacement of damaged tissue. Here, an overview of the structures and properties of different CBNs will first be provided. We will then discuss state-of-the-art advancements of CBNs and hydrogels as scaffolds for regenerating various types of human tissues. Finally, a perspective of future potentials and challenges in this field will be presented. Since this is a very rapidly growing field, we expect that this review will promote interdisciplinary efforts in developing effective tissue regeneration scaffolds for clinical applications.

Atomically Dispersed FeN2 P2 Motif with High Activity and Stability for Oxygen Reduction Reaction Over the Entire pH Range

The past decade has witnessed the great potential of Fe-based single-atom electrocatalysis in catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it remains a grand challenge to substantially improve their intrinsic activity and long-term stability in acidic electrolytes. Herein, we report a facile chemical vapor deposition strategy, by which high-density Fe atoms (3.97 wt%) are coordinated with square-planar para-positioned nitrogen and phosphorus atoms in a hierarchical carbon framework. The as-crafted atomically dispersed Fe catalyst (denoted Fe-SA/PNC) manifests an outstanding activity towards ORR over the entire pH range. Specifically, the half-wave potential of 0.92 V, 0.83 V, and 0.86 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) are attained in alkaline, neutral, and acidic electrolytes, respectively, representing the high performance among reported catalysts to date. Furthermore, after 30,000 durability cycles, the Fe-SA/PNC remains to be stable with no visible performance decay when tested in 0.1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2 SO4 , and only a minor negative shift of 40 mV detected in 0.1 M HClO4 , significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C counterpart. The coordination motif of Fe-SA/PNC is validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides atomic-level insight into improving the activity and stability of non-noble metal ORR catalysts, opening up an avenue to craft the desired single-atom electrocatalysts.
