Abstract
BACKGROUND Advancements in medical facilities have led to an increase in global life expectancy, emphasizing the need to address age-related health issues. Sarcopenia, characterized by muscle mass loss, poses significant challenges for older adults. Despite a higher prevalence in Asian populations, there is a remarkable absence of studies addressing sarcopenia among the older adults in Pakistan. This research aims to determine sarcopenia prevalence, identify risk factors, and explore gender- and age-specific patterns among older adults in Pakistan. METHODS A cross-sectional study involving 142 participants (65 males, 77 females) aged 60 and above was conducted using DEXA scans. Over a six-month period from January to June 2023, data were collected from the Islamabad Diagnostic Centre. This comprehensive dataset covered anthropometric measurements, body composition details, and health parameters. Statistical analyses, including logistic regression, were employed to examine the associations between sarcopenia and various factors. RESULTS Sarcopenia manifested in 47.18% of the older adult population (n = 142), with a distribution of 39 males (60%) and 28 females (36.36%). The investigation unveiled a compelling correlation between underweight status and sarcopenia across genders. Indeed, males exhibited a significant negative correlation between skeletal muscle mass index and age, whereas females did not show a statistically significant association. Males presented higher odds of sarcopenia in comparison to females (Odds Ratio [OR] = 2.63, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.33-5.18, p = 0.005). Age (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02-1.22, p = 0.014), lower BMI (OR = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.20-0.60, p < 0.001), and reduced body fat percentage (OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.31-2.33, p < 0.001) emerged as significant contributors to sarcopenia. These detailed gender-specific findings emphasize the importance of customizing intervention strategies to address gender disparities in sarcopenia risk factors. CONCLUSION This study highlights the significant prevalence of sarcopenia among older adults in Pakistan, with distinct gender and age-related patterns observed. The overall prevalence of sarcopenia was found to be 47.18%, with higher rates among males compared to females. Age emerged as a significant risk factor, with each additional year increasing the odds of sarcopenia. Furthermore, weight, BMI, lean mass, and total body fat demonstrated important associations with sarcopenia prevalence, highlighting the multifaceted nature of this condition. The practical implications of this study emphasize the need for targeted screening programs and personalized interventions to mitigate sarcopenia's impact, informing healthcare policies and public health strategies in Pakistan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Telomere length (TL) shortening has been identified as a marker of aging and associated with adverse health outcomes, but evidence of its association with sarcopenia is inconclusive. AIMS Estimate the cross-sectional and prospective associations between TL and sarcopenia. METHODS We used data from Waves 3 and 4 (2017, 2021) of the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health in Mexico (SAGE-Mexico). The cross-sectional sample consisted of 1,738 adults aged 50 and older, and the longitudinal sample consisted of 1,437. Relative TL was determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) on DNA extracted from saliva samples and quantified as the telomere/single-copy gene (T/S) ratio. Sarcopenia was defined according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2). RESULTS The mean salivary TL was 1.50 T/S units (95% CI: 1.49-1.52). The baseline prevalence of sarcopenia was 13.3% (95% CI: 9.8-16.8%). The incidence and persistence of sarcopenia were 6.8% (95% CI: 5.0-9.5%) and 7.0% (95% CI: 5.1-9.6%), respectively. The results showed that a one standard deviation decrease in TL was cross-sectionally associated with higher odds of sarcopenia (OR = 1.31; 95% CI: 1.03-1.67) and prospectively with a higher incidence (RRR = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.06-2.25) and persistence (RRR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.01-2.24) of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS Older adults with shorter TL had higher rates of incident and persistent sarcopenia. Implementation of interventions to delay the decline of TL in older adults is warranted. Further translational studies are needed to elucidate the effects of exercise or diet on DNA repair in the telomeric region and their associations with sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The skeletal muscle changes as aging progresses, causing sarcopenia in the older adult population, which affects the respiratory muscles' mass, strength, and function. The optimal cut-off point of peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) for respiratory sarcopenia (RS) diagnosis in accordance with sarcopenia identification is needed. AIM To establish an optimal cut-off point of PEFR for RS diagnosis in community-dwelling Asian older women. METHODS Sarcopenia diagnostic indicators were evaluated according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS) criteria. The respiratory parameters composed of respiratory muscle strength and respiratory function were evaluated by assessing maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), percent predicted forced vital capacity (Pred FVC), and PEFR. RESULTS A total of 325 community-dwelling older women were included in this study. PEFR was negatively associated with RS (OR: 0.440; 95% CI: 0.344-0.564). The area under the curve (AUC) of PEFR was 0.772 (p < 0.001). The optimal cut-off point of PEFR for RS diagnosis was 3.4 l/s (sensitivity, 63.8%; specificity, 77.3%). Significant differences were found between the robust, possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia, and RS groups in terms of both sarcopenia diagnostic indicators and respiratory parameters (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The cut-off point of PEFR can be used as a reasonable standard for RS diagnosis. This study finding can serve as a cornerstone for developing concrete criteria of RS in older women, supporting clinical judgment, which is crucial for providing appropriate treatment through accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
CONTEXT The purpose of the study was to develop normative ranges and standards for knee and shoulder isokinetic and anthropometric values. These standards can be qualitatively interpreted and allow practitioners to classify isokinetic and anthropometric values more objectively for university-level netball players. DESIGN Posttest only observational study design. All players were only evaluated once during the in-season to generate normative ranges. METHODS A total of 51 female players volunteered. Participants were evaluated on an isokinetic dynamometer at 60° per second to obtain knee-extensor and knee-flexor values as well as shoulder-flexor and shoulder-extensor values. A total of 16 anthropometric variables were collected including stature, body mass, 8 skinfolds, and 6 circumferences. Between-group differences were calculated to determine whether playing level was a differentiating factor in data. RESULTS Normative standards were developed for isokinetic parameters associated with the knee and shoulder joints as well as skinfolds and circumference measures. No statistically significant between-group differences were evident (χ2Kruskal-Wallis[2] = 3.96, P = .140). CONCLUSION These standards can be used by coaches and practitioners to set attainable goals for individual players or those from secondary leagues, classify individual and team-based performances, and facilitate decision-making processes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to evaluate the association between muscle mass variation, estimated by different equations, during hospitalization with the energy and protein intake and clinical and nutrition outcomes of patients using nutrition support. METHODS A prospective observational study with patients older than 18 years in use of enteral and/or parenteral nutrition therapy and monitored by the Nutritional Therapy Committee between December 14, 2021, and December 14, 2022. Data were collected from the electronic records and were applied in 11 equations to estimate the four different portions of muscle mass of patients receiving nutrition support at the beginning and the end of hospitalization. RESULTS A total of 261 patients were evaluated, with a median age of 61.0 (49.0-69.75) years, and 106 were women (40.6%). According to the nutrition diagnosis, several participants had severe malnutrition (39.5%). The most muscle mass estimation equations indicated a reduction of muscle mass during hospitalization. All patients presented negative energy and protein balances during hospitalization, but greater protein intake increased the lean soft tissue. Also, the greater the number of infections, metabolic complications, and scheduled diet interruption, the greater was the chance of losing muscle mass. CONCLUSION There can be an association between the variation in muscle mass and energy and protein intake during hospitalization of patients using nutrition support. In addition, variation in muscle mass was associated with complications from nutrition support. The results emphasize the importance of anthropometric measurements to estimate muscle mass when other methods are not available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies regarding BMI (kg/m2) and associated cardiovascular outcomes yield inconsistent results. OBJECTIVES We aimed to investigate the association between body composition and cardiovascular outcomes according to BMI categories in the Korean general population. METHODS A total of 2,604,401 participants were enrolled in this nationwide cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service-Health Checkup data set. Predicted lean BMI (pLBMI), body fat mass index (pBFMI), and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (pASMMI) were calculated using validated anthropometric prediction equations. A multivariable time-dependent Cox regression analysis was conducted to assess the association with cardiovascular outcomes. The results were presented with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), considering BMI categories (BMI < 18.5, BMI 18.5-24.9, BMI 25-29.9, and BMI ≥ 30). RESULTS Higher pLBMI and pASMMI were correlated with a reduced risk of composite cardiovascular outcomes. For pLBMI, HR was 0.910 (95% CI: 0.908, 0.913, P < 0.001) for males and 0.905 (95% CI: 0.899, 0.910, P < 0.001) for females. For pASMMI, HR was 0.825 (95% CI: 0.820, 0.829, P < 0.001) for males and 0.788 (95% CI: 0.777, 0.800, P < 0.001) for females. Conversely, a higher pBFMI was associated with an increased risk, with HR of 1.082 (95% CI: 1.071, 1.093, P < 0.001) for males and 1.181 (95% CI: 1.170, 1.192, P < 0.001) for females. Subgroup analysis based on BMI categories revealed no significant risk association for pBFMI in the BMI < 18.5 group. In the group with BMI ≥ 30, neither pLBMI nor pASMMI demonstrated a significant risk association. CONCLUSIONS Our results highlight the value of pLBMI, pBFMI, and pASMMI as variables for assessing risk of composite cardiovascular outcomes. The significance of indicators may vary depending on BMI categories.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects sacroiliac joints and spine, resulting in substantial disability. Sarcopenia, characterized by the loss of muscle mass and function, is a prevalent comorbidity in various chronic diseases. However, the exact prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA patients remains uncertain. The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available literature to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE, WEB OF SCIENCE, and COCHRANE databases to identify relevant studies published up to 2023. Studies investigating the prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA patients were included. Data on study characteristics, participant demographics, diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia, and prevalence rates were extracted. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to estimate the overall prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA patients. RESULTS A total of 16 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in the systematic review. These studies encompassed a combined sample size of 999 patients with SpA. The meta-analysis findings revealed that the overall prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA patients was 25.0% (95% confidence interval: 0.127 to 0.352). Furthermore, the prevalence of presarcopenia and severe sarcopenia was found to be 21.0% and 8.7%, respectively. Subgroup analysis was conducted to examine different diagnostic criteria, subtypes, and sex of SpA in relation to sarcopenia. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA patients. The findings suggest a high prevalence of sarcopenia in SpA patients, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to prevent and manage sarcopenia. And further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies for sarcopenia in SpA.

Abstract
Objective To analyze the amount of muscle and the presence of sarcopenia in postmenopausal women using different methods, verifying the agreement between them as to skeletal muscle mass (SMM). Methods This cross-sectional observational study was conducted with postmenopausal women aged ≥ 50 years. SMM was obtained from a predictive equation, Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA), and Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA). The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) were calculated. The cut-off point of SMI was determined for the population itself. The agreement between the SMI obtained using the different methods was verified. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the criteria proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2). The significance level adopted for all tests was 5.0%. Results A total of 112 women were evaluated, with an average age of 66.1 ± 5.65 years. Among them, 51.8% were sufficiently active and 43.8% were overweight and obese. The SMI cut-offs were 6.46 kg/m2 for the predictive equation and 7.66 kg/m2 for BIA, with high sensitivity and specificity. There was an excellent agreement in the identification of SMM by the predictive equation (0.89 [0.824-0.917], p < 0.001) and BIA (0.92 [0.883-0.945], p < 0.001), in reference to DXA. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 0.9%, 1.8%, and 2.7% according to BIA, DXA, and the predictive equation, respectively. Conclusion The predictive equation showed the expected agreement in estimating skeletal muscle mass in postmenopausal women, offering a viable and accurate alternative.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Low muscle mass is related to cardiovascular risk factors. This study aimed to investigate whether relative low muscle mass is related to the diameter and tortuosity of the aorta. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study of 208 adults without known cardiovascular disease who underwent Computed Tomography (CT) enhanced scan between 2020 and 2021. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was estimated. The morphology of the aorta was measured by diameter and tortuosity using CT. We assessed the relationship between SMI and diameter and tortuosity of the aorta using Spearman correlation analysis and univariate and multivariate-adjusted regression models. RESULTS Of all -individuals, 124 (59.6%) were male. The average age was 60.13 ± 16.33 years old. SMI was inversely associated with the diameter and tortuosity of the aorta (p < 0.05). Specifically, in a multivariable-adjusted model adjusting for potential confounders, a one-unit increase in the SMI was associated with a -13.56mm(95% confidence intervals (CI): -18.16 to -8.96, p < 0.001), -7.93 mm (95% CI: -10.85 to -5.02, p < 0.001), -8.01 mm (95% CI: -11.30 to -4.73, p < 0.001), -5.16 mm (95% CI: -7.57 to -2.75, p < 0.001) and -2.73 mm (95% CI: -5.18 to -0.27, p = 0.031) increase in L1-L5 diameter respectively, a -0.89 (95% CI: -1.14 to -0.64, p < 0.001) increase in the aorta tortuosity, a -0.48 (95% CI: -0.59 to -0.36, p < 0.001) increase in the descending thoracic aorta tortuosity, and a -0.44 (95% CI: -0.52 to -0.35, p < 0.001) increase in the abdominal aorta tortuosity. CONCLUSIONS Relative muscle mass was negatively associated with the diameter and tortuosity of the aorta, suggesting muscle mass maintenance may play a role in preventing aortic morphological changes.

Abstract
Bioelectronic devices are designed to translate biological information into electrical signals and vice versa, thereby bridging the gap between the living biological world and electronic systems. Among different types of bioelectronics devices, wearable and implantable biosensors are particularly important as they offer access to the physiological and biochemical activities of tissues and organs, which is significant in diagnosing and researching various medical conditions. Organic conducting and semiconducting materials, including conducting polymers (CPs) and graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are some of the most promising candidates for wearable and implantable biosensors. Their unique electrical, electrochemical, and mechanical properties bring new possibilities to bioelectronics that could not be realized by utilizing metals- or silicon-based analogues. The use of organic- and carbon-based conductors in the development of wearable and implantable biosensors has emerged as a rapidly growing research field, with remarkable progress being made in recent years. The use of such materials addresses the issue of mismatched properties between biological tissues and electronic devices, as well as the improvement in the accuracy and fidelity of the transferred information. In this review, we highlight the most recent advances in this field and provide insights into organic and carbon-based (semi)conducting materials' properties and relate these to their applications in wearable/implantable biosensors. We also provide a perspective on the promising potential and exciting future developments of wearable/implantable biosensors.

Abstract
Background The estimation of creatinine clearance (CCr) in older adult patients with diabetes is subject to deviations from the results of actual measurements because of changes in body composition. In the present study, we aimed to create a correction for the equation used for the estimation of CCr in older adult Asian patients with diabetes using body composition parameters. Methods We enrolled 50 older Japanese patients with diabetes in whom the measured values of CCr were compared with values estimated using the Cockcroft-Gault equation. The relationships between the error in the estimated CCr and body composition parameters were investigated, and the Cockcroft-Gault equation was corrected using the appropriate parameters. To evaluate the generalizability of the corrected equation, the utility of the Cockcroft-Gault equation, which was corrected on the basis of body composition measured using a household body composition meter, was also investigated. Results Body fat mass (BFM) was closely correlated with the error in the estimated CCr. The BFM-corrected Cockcroft-Gault equation was more accurate than the original equation. Similarly, the error became smaller using BFM measured with a household body composition meter. Conclusion The BFM-corrected Cockcroft-Gault equation may provide an accurate method of estimating CCr that can be used in general practice.

Abstract
(1) Background: There is a lack of data on the long-term training characteristics and performance markers of elite young female endurance athletes. The aim of this study was to present the training load (ECOs), as well as the evolution of the anthropometric values and performance of three elite U23 female triathletes over a season. (2) Methods: General training data and performance data relating to the swimming, cycling, and running legs of the 2021 season were described. The training intensity distribution (TID) was presented using the triphasic model, while the training load was based on the ECO model. An anthropometric analysis was also conducted in accordance with the ISAK standards. (3) Results: Triathletes increased their VO2max in cycling (6.9-10%) and running (7.1-9.1%), as well as their power and speed associated with the VO2max (7.7-8.6% in cycling and 5.1-5.3% in running) and their swimming speed associated with the lactate thresholds (2.6-4.0% in LT2 and 1.2-2.5% in LT1). The triathletes completed more than 10 h of weekly average training time, with peak weeks exceeding 15 h. The average TID of the three triathletes was 82% in phase 1, 6% in phase 2, and 12% in phase 3. A decrease in the sum of skinfolds and fat mass percentage was observed during the season in the three triathletes, although the last measurement revealed a stagnation or slight rise in these parameters. (4) Conclusions: The triathletes performed a combination of two training periodization models (traditional and block periodization) with a polarized TID in most of the weeks of the season. Improvements in performance and physiological parameters were observed after the general preparatory period as well as a positive body composition evolution throughout the season, except at the end, where the last measurement revealed stagnation or a slight decline. This study can be useful as a general guide for endurance coaches to organize a training season with female U23 triathletes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate the association of respiratory muscle strength with sarcopenia and its indicators in the oldest old. METHODS Maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximum expiratory pressure (MEP), and sarcopenia-related factors (handgrip strength and appendicular lean mass) were evaluated in a cohort of n = 286 (45.5% female) non-frail, community-dwelling persons aged 83.6 ± 3.0 years (age range 80-97 years). RESULTS The sample presented a sarcopenia prevalence of 32.2%. Sarcopenic subjects showed comparable MIP and MEP as non-sarcopenic ones (female: MIP 43.9 ± 18.9 vs. 50.3 ± 19.5, p = 0.053; MEP 63.0 ± 23.0 vs. 69.2 ± 19.1, p = 0.067; male: MIP, 65.1 ± 24.4 vs. 64.4 ± 23.9, p = 0.433; MEP 87.7 ± 33.3 vs. 93.8 ± 30.9, p = 0.124). Statistically significant but very low associations were found between grip strength and MIP (r = 0.193 for male, p < 0.05 and r = 0.257 for female participants, p < 0.01) and MEP (r = 0.200 for male, p < 0.01 and r = 0.191 for female participants, p < 0.05). Lean mass was significantly correlated to MIP and MEP in female (r = 0.253, p < 0.01 and r = 0.343, p < 0.01, respectively), whereas this association was not found in male participants. Grip strength was the only statistically significant predictor of MEP (r2 = 0.212, p < 0.001), while MIP was independently predicted by age, male sex, and grip strength (r2 = 0.177, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Peripheral muscle strength is a statistically significant, albeit weak predictor for respiratory muscle strength in well-functioning, community-dwelling persons aged 80+. When confronted to a low grip strength, one should be aware of concomitant respiratory muscle weakness, as this is a known risk factor for atelectasis and pneumonia. Given the relatively low association with handgrip strength, respiratory muscle strength testing might be indicated.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the association of the ACTN3-R577X polymorphism with sarcopenia stage, according to the Revised European Consensus on the Definition and Diagnosis of Sarcopenia, in middle-aged and older adults, pre- and post- ST. In the 12-week longitudinal study, 71 middle-aged and older adults were evaluated; the participants were assigned to either control or intervention group. The intervention group underwent progressive ST three times a week. All participants underwent blood collection, DNA extraction, genotyping of the ACTN3-R577X polymorphism, anthropometric evaluations, and diagnostic tests for sarcopenia. The last two tests were repeated after 12 weeks. No association of the ACTN3-R577X polymorphism with sarcopenia stage was observed before and after 12 weeks. However, the intervention group remained non-sarcopenic (n = 25, p <0.05) or achieved changes in sarcopenia stage (from sarcopenic to non-sarcopenic) (n = 13, p <0.05). Our study demonstrates that progressive ST performed regularly can reverse or prevent sarcopenia regardless of genotype for the ACTN3-R577X polymorphism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Literature on the association between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment is largely unclear and mainly limited to non-European populations. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore if the presence of sarcopenia at the baseline could increase the risk of cognitive impairment in a large cohort of older people participating to the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), over ten years of follow-up. METHODS Sarcopenia was diagnosed as having low handgrip strength and low skeletal muscle mass index at the baseline, using a muscle mass prediction model; cognitive function was evaluated in the ELSA through several tests. The results are reported in the whole sample adjusted for potential baseline confounders and after matching sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic participants with a propensity score. RESULTS 2738 people (mean age: 68.7 years, 54.4% males) were included. During the ten years of follow-up, sarcopenia was associated with significantly lower scores in memory (p < 0.001), verbal fluency (p < 0.001), immediate word recall (p <0.001), delayed word recall (p = 0.018), and in recall summary score (p < 0.001). After adjusting for eight potential confounders, the presence of sarcopenia was significantly associated with poor verbal fluency (odds ratio, OR= 1.417, 95% confidence intervals, CI= 1.181-1.700) and in propensity-score matched analyses (OR=1.272, 95%CI= 1.071- 1.511). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Sarcopenia was found to be associated with a significantly higher incidence of poor cognitive status in a large population of elderly people followed up for 10 years, suggesting it may be an important potential risk factor for dementia.

Abstract
Although a lung disease, COPD is also associated with extrapulmonary manifestations including, among others, limb muscle dysfunction. Limb muscle dysfunction is a key systemic consequence of COPD that impacts patients' physical activity, exercise tolerance, quality of life and survival. Deconditioning is the main mechanism underlying the development of limb muscle dysfunction in COPD, which can be partially improved with exercise. However, some patients may not be able to tolerate exercise because of incapacitating breathlessness or unwillingness to undertake whole-body exercise. Alternative training modalities that do not give rise to dyspnoea, such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), are urged. Over the past 20 years, NMES in COPD has presented conflicting conclusions in meta-analysis. In this review, we try to understand the reason for this result by analysing possible biases and factors that brought conflicting conclusions. We discuss the population (the intervention group, but also the control group), the outcome measures, the frequency of stimulation, the rehabilitation protocol (i.e. NMES alone versus standard care/rehabilitation or NMES plus conventional exercise training versus conventional exercise training alone or NMES versus sham treatment) and the trial design. The main reason for this discrepancy is the lack of dedicated guidelines for NMES. Further research is urged to determine the optimal parameters for an NMES programme. Despite this, NMES appears to be an effective means of enhancing quadriceps strength and exercise capacity in COPD with the potential to break the vicious circle induced by the disease and COPD patients' lifestyle.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Advanced Glycation End-Products (AGEs) are a diverse group of highly reactive molecules that play a vital role in the development of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease (PD), leading to a decline in functional and cognitive capacity. The objective of this study was to assess the intake and quantification of AGEs in individuals with PD and to correlate them with their functional and cognitive abilities. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving 20 PD patients and 20 non-PD individuals as the Control group (C). The autofluorescence reader was used to evaluate skin AGEs, while food recall was used to quantify AGEs consumed for three different days. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Short Physical Performance Battery, and handgrip tests were used. PD patients demonstrated greater impairment in functional capacity compared to the control group. RESULTS Dominant Handgrip (p = 0.02) and motor performance, in the sit and stand test (p = 0.01) and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) (p = 0.01) were inferior in PD patients than the control group. Although PD patients tended to consume less AGEs than the control group, AGE intake was negatively correlated with handgrip strength in individuals with PD (r = -0.59; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION PD patients had lower strength and functional capacity, suggesting that the effects of AGEs might be exacerbated during chronic diseases like Parkinson's.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypoxia is an environmental condition that occurs in sports performed at high altitude. Adaptation to hypoxia is accompanied by changes in body composition and cardiac function that could impair sport performance in altitude. These changes concern mainly to a reduction in muscle mass and an increased heart rate. In this context, a resistance training protocol in a normobaric hypoxia chamber has been implemented. Therefore, the aim of this study was to study the changes in body composition and cardiovascular variables after a training period in intermittent hypoxia. METHODS A single-blind experimental study was carried out for 3 weeks. Thirty-two participants were distributed in a control group resistance training in normoxia (N) at sea level and an experimental group resistance training in intermittent hypoxia (IH) between a simulated 5100-5800m during 15 sessions with a controlled diet. Anthropometry according to ISAK was used to determine body composition. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures and other cardiovascular parameters were monitored. RESULTS IH showed a reduction in body fat (from 8.9±1.9% to 8.2±1.7%) compared to N (from 8.4±1.5% to 8.1±1.4%) (P<0.001). In addition, significant changes in blood pressure were observed at the end compared to the beginning of the intervention in the IH (from 124.7±10.2 to 116.9±8.3 mmHg and 68.3±8.8 to 62.4±5.7 mmHg in systolic a diastolic blood pressure respectively). In addition, resting heart rate was significantly reduced in IH. However, partial oxygen saturation displayed no changes in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Altogether, the training protocol in intermittent hypoxia performed in the present report allowed to adjust body weight through fat mass reduction but maintaining muscle mass. In addition, a decrease in blood pressure and basal heart rate was observed.

Abstract
Carbohydrate (CHO) availability sustains high metabolic demands during prolonged exercise. The adequacy of current CHO intake recommendations, 30-90 g·h-1 dependent on CHO mixture and tolerability, to support elite marathon performance is unclear. We sought to scrutinize the current upper limit recommendation for exogenous CHO intake to support modeled sub-2-h marathon (S2M) attempts across elite male and female runners. Male and female runners (n = 120 each) were modeled from published literature with reference characteristics necessary to complete a S2M (e.g., body mass and running economy). Completion of a S2M was considered across a range of respiratory exchange rates, with maximal starting skeletal muscle and liver glycogen content predicted for elite male and female runners. Modeled exogenous CHO bioavailability needed for male and female runners were 93 ± 26 and 108 ± 22 g·h-1, respectively (P < 0.0001, d = 0.61). Without exogenous CHO, males were modeled to deplete glycogen in 84 ± 7 min, females in 71 ± 5 min (P < 0.0001, d = 2.21) despite higher estimated CHO oxidation rates in males (5.1 ± 0.5 g·h-1) than females (4.4 ± 0.5 g·h-1; P < 0.0001, d = 1.47). Exogenous CHO intakes ≤ 90 g·h-1 are insufficient for 65% of modeled runners attempting a S2M. Current recommendations to support marathon performance appear inadequate for elite marathon runners but may be more suitable for male runners in pursuit of a S2M (56 of 120) than female runners (28 of 120).NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study scrutinizes the upper limit of exogenous carbohydrate (CHO) recommendations for elite male and female marathoners by modeling sex-specific needs across an extreme metabolic challenge lasting ∼2 h, a sub-2-h marathon. Contemporary nutritional guidelines to optimize marathon performance appear inadequate for most elite marathon runners but appear more appropriate for males over their female counterparts. Future research examining possible benefits of exogenous CHO intakes > 90 g·h-1 should prioritize female athlete study inclusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in individuals aged 50 years or older on hemodialysis; to verify the association between sarcopenia and sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric factors, components of sarcopenia and quality of life (QoL); and to correlate the components of sarcopenia with QoL. METHODS Participated 83 individuals on hemodialysis. Sarcopenia was established according to the current European consensus. Dynamometry to determine strength, calf circumference (CC) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMMI) to obtain muscle mass and gait speed (GS) for physical performance. For QoL used the WHOQOL-bref. RESULTS the prevalence of sarcopenia was 32.6% (CC) and 18.1% (ASMMI). There was no association between sarcopenia and QoL. Both handgrip strength (r=0.25) and GS (r=0.36) showed a correlation with physical domain. CONCLUSIONS sarcopenia was expressive, and the aspects of functionality determine the physical impairment in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The sports-science literature lacks data on training and performance characteristics of international elite athletes over multiple seasons. The present case study provided general training characteristics and performance data of two male short-distance triathletes in the Junior, U23, and international Elite categories. METHODS General training and performance data of two male elite triathletes were described in swimming, cycling, and running segments from the 2015 to 2022 season. The training load was presented using the ECO model while the training intensity distribution (TID) was a triphasic model. RESULTS Both triathletes increased their performance throughout the seasons. Triathlete A increased his VO2max in cycling by 20.6%, in running by 16.7%. His power at VO2max and his speed at VO2max by 18.9% and 11.0%, respectively. Triathlete B improved his VO2max by 17.8% in cycling, by 16.1% in running and his power at VO2max by 24%, and his speed at VO2max by 14.3%. The triathletes trained on average 14-17 h a week. The TID model was polarized. CONCLUSIONS To achieve the top international level, it is necessary to consider the following measures: training load progression; improvements in physiological variables; and participation in international events starting from youth categories.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Sarcopenia is characterized by a decline in muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance. Persistent inflammation may lead to muscle wasting. This research aims to determine the prevalence and associated factors of sarcopenia in axial spondyloarthritis (ax-SpA). METHOD A cross-sectional study of 104 ax-SpA patients who met the 2009 ASAS criteria was conducted at Phramongkutklao Hospital between January 2020 and February 2021. Sarcopenia-related factors and disease characteristics were recorded. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Strength, ambulation, rising from a chair, stair climbing and history of falling (SARC-F) was evaluated. Muscle strength was measured by hand grip strength and chair stand time. Physical performance was assessed by 6-m walk and time up and go tests. Logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with sarcopenia. RESULTS Most patients were male (74%), with a mean (standard deviation, SD) age and disease duration of 42.6 (12.2) and 8.3 (8.5) years, respectively. The mean BMI (SD) was 23.8 (4.4). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 22.1%. There were no differences in disease activity (BASDAI and ASDAS) between ax-SpA patients with and without sarcopenia. Age, low BMI, and BASFI score were independently associated with sarcopenia, with adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 1.08 (1.01-1.16), 0.39 (0.25-0.63), and 1.41 (1.07-1.86), respectively. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia is common in ax-SpA patients and is independently associated with older age, low BMI, and high BASFI score but not disease activity. Key Points • Despite the fact that ax-SpA patients are typically young, sarcopenia is frequently observed within this population. • Sarcopenia in ax-SpA patients has an independent association with older age, low BMI, and functional limitations (high BASFI scores). • Sarcopenia in ax-SpA patients is not associated with disease activity; however, early treatment to prevent functional limitations may prevent sarcopenia in ax-SpA patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection causes changes that can influence human metabolism and modify the distribution of body compartments. We aimed to describe the clinical findings of changes in resting metabolism, muscle strength, and body composition in nonhospitalized patients after being diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS Physically active patients were evaluated at a nutrition clinic, and indirect calorimetry (IC) and body composition analysis using portable ultrasound were performed. After a routine appointment, all patients were instructed to inform the staff if they tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our sample included individuals diagnosed with COVID-19, confirmed by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), within 7 days of the routine appointment. After an average incubation period of 14-21 days, in which there was no proven transmission of disease by RT-PCR, all of the patients were re-evaluated. RESULTS A total of 38 volunteers (63.2% female) completed the study and were included in the analysis. The mean age of the participants was 37.3 ± 8.8 years. The comparison between pre- and post-COVID-19 stratified by sex demonstrated significant reduction in the RMR and RMR adjusted for weight (p < 0.0001) for both groups. Regarding body composition, there was a significant increase observed in fat mass in men (p < 0.002) and women (p < 0.01), and a significant reduction observed in fat-free mass (men: p < 0.002; women: p < 0.001) and skeletal muscle mass (men: p = 0.003; women: p < 0.0001). There was a significant difference between the change in the RMR measured by IC (p < 0.0001) and that calculated by the predictive equation of Cunningham (1980) (p < 0.0001), whereas the Harris and Benedict (1918) and Mifflin (1990) equations exhibited no difference. However, the mean difference in RMR between the post- and pre-COVID-19 calculated by the Cunningham equation was -40.4 kcal/day (95% confidence interval [CI]: -56.38 to -24.45), whereas the mean difference measured by IC was -362.3 kcal/day (95% CI: -452.7 to -271.9). CONCLUSION This study describes the trends in the RMR, and body composition in individuals with COVID-19 who were not hospitalized from the pre-COVID-19 period to the post-COVID-19 period. A significant reduction in resting energy expenditure, and loss of fat-free mass and muscle mass in the post-COVID-19 period were observed in both men and women.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to analyze the expression of the IGF type-1 receptor gene (IGF-1r) and IGF-I, GH, testosterone, and IGFBP-3 concentrations in young people subjected to 10 weeks of muscle hypertrophy training. METHODS IGF-1r expression, serum concentrations of IGF-I, IGFBP-3, GH, and total testosterone, as well as body composition, fat percentage, and body mass index, were determined for 22 healthy young males at three moments of resistance training (first, fifth, and tenth week of training). RESULTS Throughout the 10 weeks of training, a reduction was observed in the relative expression of the IGF-1r gene (2-ΔΔCT) and an increase in IGF-I and GH concentrations. A reduction in total testosterone concentrations was detected during the recovery period in the fifth week. The IGFBP-3 concentrations did not change throughout the training. CONCLUSIONS The resistance training protocol prescribed for muscle hypertrophy did not suppress the GH-IGF-I axis, but it did cause alterations in IGF-1r gene expression and in IGF-I kinetics compatible with increased IGF bioactivity.

Abstract
Digital anthropometry by three-dimensional optical imaging systems and smartphones has recently been shown to provide non-invasive, precise, and accurate anthropometric and body composition measurements. To our knowledge, no previous study performed smartphone-based digital anthropometric assessments in young athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproducibly and validity of smartphone-based estimation of anthropometric and body composition parameters in youth soccer players. A convenience sample of 124 male players and 69 female players (median ages of 16.2 and 15.5 years, respectively) was recruited. Measurements of body weight and height, one whole-body Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan, and acquisition of optical images (performed in duplicate by the Mobile Fit app to obtain two avatars for each player) were performed. The reproducibility analysis showed percent standard error of measurement values < 10% for all anthropometric and body composition measurements, thus indicating high agreement between the measurements obtained for the two avatars. Mobile Fit app overestimated the body fat percentage with respect to DXA (average overestimation of + 3.7% in males and + 4.6% in females), while it underestimated the total lean mass (- 2.6 kg in males and - 2.5 kg in females) and the appendicular lean mass (- 10.5 kg in males and - 5.5 kg in females). Using data of the soccer players, we reparameterized the equations previously proposed to estimate the body fat percentage and the appendicular lean mass and we obtained new equations that can be used in youth athletes for body composition assessment through conventional anthropometrics-based prediction models.

Abstract
Advances in single-cell technologies have transformed the ability to identify the individual cell types present within tissues and organs. The musculoskeletal bionetwork, part of the wider Human Cell Atlas project, aims to create a detailed map of the healthy musculoskeletal system at a single-cell resolution throughout tissue development and across the human lifespan, with complementary generation of data from diseased tissues. Given the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, this detailed reference dataset will be critical to understanding normal musculoskeletal function in growth, homeostasis and ageing. The endeavour will also help to identify the cellular basis for disease and lay the foundations for novel therapeutic approaches to treating diseases of the joints, soft tissues and bone. Here, we present a Roadmap delineating the critical steps required to construct the first draft of a human musculoskeletal cell atlas. We describe the key challenges involved in mapping the extracellular matrix-rich, but cell-poor, tissues of the musculoskeletal system, outline early milestones that have been achieved and describe the vision and directions for a comprehensive musculoskeletal cell atlas. By embracing cutting-edge technologies, integrating diverse datasets and fostering international collaborations, this endeavour has the potential to drive transformative changes in musculoskeletal medicine.

Abstract
Background and aims We analyzed the effects of age and sex on the relationship between muscle mass and serum creatinine levels in an apparently healthy population, including older adults. Materials and methods We retrospectively evaluated 1,502 individuals from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and 4,586 individuals from the Health Check (HC) groups. We utilized data from the KNHANES and HC groups on serum creatinine levels and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), determined using dual X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectric impedance analysis. Results A significant negative correlation between SMI and age was observed in both the KNHANES and HC groups in males but not in females. In males, serum creatinine levels showed a significant negative correlation with age in both the KNHANES (r = -0.522, P < 0.0001) and HC groups (r = -0.451, P < 0.0001). In females, there was no significant correlation between serum creatinine levels and age in the KNHANES (r = -0.016, P = 0.5985) and HC group (r = -0.011, P = 0.5618). Conclusions Serum creatinine levels decrease more significantly in older males than in older females due to sex-specific muscle mass decline.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study analyzes the influence of resistance training (RT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on metabolic indices and serum levels of Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) in postmenopausal women who suffer from the metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS 45 postmenopausal women aged 45-65 years with MetS were divided into two intervention groups (RT and HIIT) and one control group, each consisting of 15 people. The RT group performed resistance training for both the upper and lower body, while the HIIT group completed 3 min(min) of high-intensity training at 80-90% of their maximum heart rate (HRmax), followed by moderate walking for 3 min at 55-65% of HRmax. These sessions were conducted for a duration of eight weeks and three times a week, with the samples being collected at the baseline and at the end of the treatment, i.e., week 8. RESULTS The results showed that weight, waist circumference, body mass index, fat mass, low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, cholesterol, fasting blood sugar (FBS), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C), systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased, and SIRT1 increased significantly in both training groups. Systolic blood pressure, cholesterol, HbA1C, and FBS decreased more in the HIIT group. Skeletal muscle mass and 1-repetition maximum (1-RM) increased more in the RT group. CONCLUSIONS RT and HIIT serve as one of the most effective strategies for therapeutically treating patients with metabolic syndrome. TRIAL REGISTRATION IRCT, IRCT20221120056548N1. Abstract
BACKGROUND There are several markers for the suspicion, identification, and confirmation of sarcopenia. OBJECTIVES To analyse the importance of several markers for assessing sarcopenia by classifying phenotypes based on five domains: symptomatology, muscle function, muscle mass, physical performance, and physical function. METHODS A cross-sectional study analysing 312 older adults (72.6±7.8 yrs) was conducted in Novo Aripuanã, Amazonas, Brazil. Symptoms of sarcopenia were determined with the SARC-Calf; muscle function was assessed using the 30-Chair Stand test (CST), 30-CST power, and handgrip strength (HGS) with and without normalisation for body mass/height; the skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI) was estimated from anthropometry; physical performance was determined through the 4-m gait speed (GS) and 6-min walking test (6MWT); and physical function was determined with the Composite Physical Function Scale (CPF). RESULTS Cluster analysis revealed two phenotypes (at risk vs not at risk for sarcopenia) and the contribution of each marker (ranged from 0 to 1). In men, the contribution of each marker was: 1 for SARC-Calf, 0.18 for SMMI, 0.09 for 30-CST power and 0.06 for HGS; in women: 1 for SARC-Calf, 0.25 for 30-CST power, 0.22 for SMMI, 0.06 for GS, 0.04 for HGS, and 0.03 for CPF. Considering the cutoff values proposed by Rikli and Jones (2013) for physical function and Cruz-Jentoft et al. (2019) for the other domains, the risk profile for sarcopenia was characterized by: high SARC-Calf in both sexes (men:51.8 vs 3.6%, p<0.001; women:71.2 vs 1.1%, p<0.001), low SMMI (men:73.2 vs 44.6%, p<0.002; women:44.1 vs 23.6%, p = 0.002); in women, low GS (38.7 vs 12.4%, p<0.001) and low CPF (29.7 vs 15.7%, p = 0.020), and no differences in HGS between groups in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS SARC-Calf, SMMI, and 30-CST were more relevant markers for sarcopenia risk in older adults of both sexes, GS and CPF played also an important role in women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Given the increasing incidence of chronic degenerative diseases related to changes in tissues, the availability of diagnostic tools with greater accuracy in the estimation of body composition (BC) has become necessary. Interpreting the BC values of individuals requires reference data obtained from a healthy population with the same ethnicity, to identify individuals at risk for the development of negative health outcomes. OBJECTIVE Generate reference values (RV) of body composition (BC) for Mexican children and adolescents. METHODS This was an urban-population-based cross-sectional study of healthy Mexican children and adolescents. BC estimations by anthropometry, multifrequency bioimpedance analysis (MF-BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) where used to create sex- and age-specific RV by means of generalized additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS). RESULTS We assessed 2104 subjects, and after confirming a clinically and metabolically healthy status, we measured 1659 subjects aged 5-20 years, [806 females (49%) and 853 males (51%)] by anthropometry, MF-BIA and DXA to create sex- and age- smoothed reference centiles, lambda (L), mu (M), and sigma (S) values. We also built sex- and age-smoothed graphic curves for each variable of interest. CONCLUSIONS We present valid RV and curves for BC variables estimated by anthropometry, MF-BIA and DXA from clinically and metabolically healthy urban Mexican children and adolescents. These RV are different from those reported for other populations, and therefore, should be used for clinical and research purposes involving urban Mexican children and adolescents.

Abstract
CONTEXT Reduced muscle mass is linked to poor outcomes in both inpatients and outpatients, highlighting the importance of muscle mass assessment in clinical practice. However, laboratory methods to assess muscle mass are not yet feasible for routine use in clinical practice because of limited availability and high costs. OBJECTIVE This work aims to review the literature on muscle mass prediction by anthropometric equations in adults or older people. DATA SOURCES The following databases were searched for observational studies published until June 2022: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. DATA EXTRACTION Of 6437 articles initially identified, 63 met the inclusion criteria for this review. Four independent reviewers, working in pairs, selected and extracted data from those articles. DATA ANALYSIS Two studies reported new equations for prediction of skeletal muscle mass: 10 equations for free-fat mass and lean soft tissue, 22 for appendicular lean mass, 7 for upper-body muscle mass, and 7 for lower-body muscle mass. Twenty-one studies validated previously proposed equations. This systematic review shows there are numerous equations in the literature for muscle mass prediction, and most are validated for healthy adults. However, many equations were not always accurate and validated in all groups, especially people with obesity, undernourished people, and older people. Moreover, in some studies, it was unclear if fat-free mass or lean soft tissue had been assessed because of an imprecise description of muscle mass terminology. CONCLUSION This systematic review identified several feasible, practical, and low-cost equations for muscle mass prediction, some of which have excellent accuracy in healthy adults, older people, women, and athletes. Malnourished individuals and people with obesity were understudied in the literature, as were older people, for whom there are only equations for appendicular lean mass. Abstract
Piezo1 channels are mechanically activated (MA) cation channels that are involved in sensing of various mechanical perturbations, such as membrane stretch and shear stress, and play a crucial role in cell mechanotransduction. In response to mechanical stimuli, these channels open up and allow cations to travel into the cell and induce biochemical reactions that can change the cell's metabolism and function. Skeletal muscle cells/fibers inherently depend upon mechanical cues in the form of fluid shear stress and contractions (physical exercise). For example, an exposure of skeletal muscles to chronic mechanical loading leads to increased anabolism and fiber hypertrophy, while prolonged mechanical unloading results in muscle atrophy. MA Piezo1 channels have recently emerged as key mechanosensors that are capable of linking mechanical signals and intramuscular signaling in skeletal muscle cells/fibers. This review will summarize the emerging role of Piezo1 channels in the development and regeneration of skeletal muscle tissue as well as in the regulation of skeletal muscle atrophy. In addition, an overview of potential Piezo1-related signaling pathways underlying anabolic and catabolic processes will be provided. A better understanding of Piezo1's role in skeletal muscle mechanotransduction may represent an important basis for the development of therapeutic strategies for maintaining muscle functions under disuse conditions and in some disease states.

Abstract
Background Although aging is a process associated with the development of obesity, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and sarcopenia, the prevalence of these conditions in older adults from São Paulo, Brazil, is unclear. Methods Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the prevalence of obesity, sarcopenia, and MetS, both separately and together, in a community-based sample of older adults from São Paulo, Brazil. Data from the medical records of 418 older adults of both genders, aged 60 years or older (mean age 69.3 ± 6.5 years), who were not physically active, were used to conduct this retrospective cross-sectional study. Anthropometric variables were used to determine both body mass index (BMI) and Conicity index (C index). Sarcopenia and MetS were defined according to the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People and by the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, respectively. Results Based on BMI, the group of older men (n = 91) showed a predominance of adequate weight (n = 49) and the group of older women (n = 327) showed a predominance of obesity (n = 181). In association with obesity, while only the group of older women presented with sarcopenia (n = 5), 52 older women and 9 older men presented with MetS, and two older women presented with sarcopenia + MetS [prevalence ratio = 0.0385, 95% CI (0.007;0.1924)]. Based on the C index, 58 older women and 11 older men presented with MetS, while the occurrence of sarcopenia or MetS + sarcopenia was found in 32 and 5 older women, respectively [prevalence ratio = 0.0910, 95% CI (0.037;0.2241)]. Discussion Our results suggest that obesity, as measured by BMI or the C Index, was more closely associated with the occurrence of MetS than sarcopenia, regardless of gender, and also that sarcopenic obesity was only found in the group of older women. Additionally, the prevalence ratio of obesity, sarcopenia, and MetS evidenced using the C index was 2.3 times higher than the values found using the BMI classification.

Abstract
Certain anthropometric characteristics are required for athletes to successfully perform in elite endurance sports. The present study aims to analyse the anthropometric characteristics of professional cyclists according to their specialty. Anthropometric measurements were conducted of the body composition of 76 male professional road cyclists in line with International Society for Advancement of Kinanthropometry protocol. Fat mass did not differ (p > 0.05) between climbers, all-rounders and flat specialists, although the following anthropometric variables did differ according to the role played within the team (p < 0.05): Body mass (climbers: 63.8 ± 3.6, all-rounders: 68.8 ± 5.3, flat specialists: 74.5 ± 5.6 kg) skeletal body mass (climbers: 29.7 ± 1.6, all-rounders: 31.4 ± 1.9, flat specialists: 33.5 ± 2.4 kg); body surface area (climbers: 1.78 ± 0.07, all-rounders: 1.89 ± 0.10, flat specialists: 1.96 ± 0.1 m2); frontal area (climbers: 0.33 ± 0.01, all-rounders: 0.35 ± 0.02, flat specialists: 0.36 ± 0.02 m2). Anthropometric characteristics differ between world-class cyclists depending on their specialty. These differences could influence performance in relation to different types of road cycling competitions. The present study identified characteristics that could be used by coaches to evaluate their athletes in the context of elite or professional road cycling.HighlightsNormative reference values of a large sample of professional cyclists of the highest category are presented.Anthropometric characteristics differ between world-class cyclists depending on their specialty.Body mass, BMI, height and skeletal muscle mass are determining factors to determine the role of the cyclist.

Abstract
The best overall measure of kidney function is glomerular filtration rate (GFR) as commonly estimated from serum creatinine concentrations (eGFRcr) using formulas that correct for the higher average creatinine concentrations in Blacks. After two decades of use, these formulas have come under scrutiny for estimating GFR differently in Blacks and non-Blacks. Discussions of whether to include race (Black vs. non-Black) in the calculation of eGFRcr fail to acknowledge that the original race-based eGFRcr provided the same CKD treatment recommendations for Blacks and non-Blacks based on directly (exogenously) measured GFR. Nevertheless, the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology Task Force on Reassessing the Inclusion of Race in Diagnosing Kidney Disease removed race in CKD treatment guidelines and pushed for the immediate adoption of a race-free eGFRcr formula by physicians and clinical laboratories. This formula is projected to negate CKD in 5.51 million White and other non-Black adults and reclassify CKD to less severe stages in another 4.59 million non-Blacks, in order to expand treatment eligibility to 434,000 Blacks not previously diagnosed and to 584,000 Blacks previously diagnosed with less severe CKD. This review examines: 1) the validity of the arguments for removing the original race correction, and 2) the performance of the proposed replacement formula. Excluding race in the derivation of eGFRcr changed the statistical bias from +3.7 to -3.6 ml/min/1.73m2 in Blacks and from +0.5 to +3.9 in non-Blacks, i.e., promoting CKD diagnosis in Blacks at the cost of restricting diagnosis in non-Blacks. By doing so, the revised eGFRcr greatly exaggerates the purported racial disparity in CKD burden. Claims that the revised formulas identify heretofore undiagnosed CKD in Blacks are not supported when studies that used kidney failure replacement therapy and mortality are interpreted as proxies for baseline CKD. Alternatively, a race-stratified eGFRcr (i.e., separate equations for Blacks and non-Blacks) would provide the least biased eGFRcr for both Blacks and non-Blacks and the best medical treatment for all patients.

Abstract
The objective was to analyse the associations between anthropometric characteristics and diet in male rugby players according to the playing position. A cross-sectional study was developed. The forwards had higher body weight (107 kg) and fat mass (FM; 12%) than the backs (87.8 kg and 8.47%, respectively) (p < 0.05). The quality of diet needs to improve (KIDMED value of 5.87 and 6.36 for forwards and backs, respectively). Nutritional imbalances, such as deficits in carbohydrates, fibre, calcium, magnesium and vitamin D, and excess of fats, saturated fatty acid, cholesterol and sugars were found. Carbohydrates and proteins intake were significant associated (p < 0.05) with a minor FM. Forwards with a KIDMED index of less than 8 had a significantly higher FM than those who maintained an optimal diet (p < 0.05). The diet of rugby players should be more in line with dietary recommendations and take into account the player position to optimise sports performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dynapenia is a risk factor of mortality. Therefore, the development of low-cost and easy-to-apply tools is essential to optimize the health surveillance actions of older people. OBJECTIVES To compare the time spent on habitual physical activity (HPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) among dynapenic and non-dynapenic older adults and ascertain the predictive ability of these behaviors on outcome. DESIGN AND SETTING A cross-sectional population epidemiological survey was conducted involving 208 older adults. METHODS HPA and SB were quantified using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and dynapenia was identified by handgrip strength (women: 18.37 kgf; men: 26.75 kgf). RESULTS The prevalence was 24.50%. In both sexes, dynapenic individuals reported a HPA median time of 70.00 minutes/week (min/wk), while non-dynapenic women and men reported HPA median times of 240.00 and 280.00 min/wk, respectively (P < 0.05). For SB among dynapenic individuals, a median of 388.75 min/day was observed in women and 428.57 min/d in men. In contrast, non-dynapenic women and men had 291.42 and 274.28 min/day in SB (P < 0.05), respectively. The best cutoff HPA to discriminate the outcome was 150.00 min/wk in women (sensitivity: 73.30%; specificity: 60.67%) and 140.00 min/wk in men (sensitivity, 71.43%; specificity, 61.54%). The best cutoff SB was 381.43 min/day in women (sensitivity, 53.30%; specificity, 84.80%) and 351.43 min/day in men (sensitivity, 71.43%; specificity, 73.85%). CONCLUSION Older individuals with dynapenia spent less time on HPA and more time in SB. Furthermore, HPA was found to be a better discriminator of dynapenic individuals, and SB better discriminated non-dynapenic individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior, fruit and vegetable intake, and the risk of sarcopenia among older Chinese adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 5418 older Chinese adults who participated in the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health (SAGE). Participants reported information about their physical activity, sedentary behavior, and dietary habits (fruit and vegetable intake). Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of low skeletal muscle mass and either a slow gait speed or weak handgrip strength. A multiple logistic regression model was employed to determine the relationship between MVPA, sedentary behavior, fruit and vegetable intake, and the risk of sarcopenia. RESULTS Only 32.63% of participants met all three recommendations (for MVPA, sedentary behavior, and fruit and vegetable intake). Compared with meeting none of the recommendations, meeting all three recommendations was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia (OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.41-0.98). Moreover, meeting the recommendation for sufficient fruit and vegetable intake (OR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.58-0.83), MVPA and fruit/vegetable intake (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.52-0.86), and sedentary behavior and fruit/vegetable intake (OR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.48-0.98) was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that in this large representative sample of older Chinese adults, meeting lifestyle recommendations for MVPA, sedentary behavior, and fruit and vegetable intake protected against sarcopenia.

Abstract
To compare the performance of SARC-F and SARC-CalF as screening tools for sarcopenia. Cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 312 community-dwelling older people. Sarcopenia was defined as low handgrip strength (HGS) or low gait speed (GS ≤ 0.8 m/s). HGS was measured by dynamometry and GS by the 4-m walking speed test. For HGS, six criteria (C) were used to identify sarcopenia in men/women: CI: < 27 kg/16 kg; CII: < 35.5 kg/20.0 kg; CIII: grip over body mass index < 1.05/< 0.79; CIV: grip strength over total body fat < 1.66/< 0.65; CV: grip over bodyweight < 0.45/< 0.34; CVI: < 27 kg/16 kg and low skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI); CI and CVI defined according to the European Working Group on sarcopenia in older people and the rest according to the sarcopenia definition and outcomes Consortium. For sarcopenia screening, the SARC-F (≥ 4 points) and the SARC-CalF (≥ 11 points) were used. The kappa analysis revealed no agreement between the SARC-F and the various criteria for the identification of sarcopenia in men. The same lack of agreement was observed in women with some exceptions: CI = 0.161 ± 0.074, p = 0.020; GS = 0.209 ± 0.076, p = 0.003. Concerning the Cohen's kappa between the SARC-Calf and the reference criteria of sarcopenia, the following coefficients were observed as significant for women: CI = 0.201 ± 0.069, p = 0.003; CII = 0.186 ± 0.064, p = 0.005; GS = 0.273 ± 0.068, p = 0.0001; and for men: CII = 0.139 ± 0.053, p = 0.021; GS = 0.223 ± 0.099, p = 0.011. ROC curves revealed the SARC-Calf with acceptable discrimination and reasonable sarcopenia predictive capacity considering a cutoff value of 10.5 in both men (AUC: 67.5%, p = 0.022; Se = 52.9%; Sp = 76.8%) and women (AUC: 72.4%, p < 0.001; Se = 63%; Sp = 68.5%) concerning GS. The SARC-CalF performed better than the SARC-F for screening sarcopenia in the population ≥ 60 years of age in the Amazonas, measured through walking slowness.

Abstract
To develop a simplified magnetic resonance imaging method (MRI) to assess total adipose tissue (AT) and adipose tissue free mass (ATFM) from three single MRI slices in people with overweight/obesity in order to implement body composition follow-up in a clinical research setting. Body composition of 310 participants (70 women and 240 men, age: 50.8 ± 10.6 years, BMI: 31.3 ± 5.6 kg.m-2) was assessed with 3 single slices (T6-T7, L4-L5 and at mid-thigh) MRI. Multiple regression analysis was used to develop equations predicting AT and ATFM from these three single slices. Then we implemented a longitudinal phase consisting in a 2-month exercise training program during which we tested the sensitivity of these equations in a subgroup of participants with overweight/obesity (n = 79) by comparing the exercise-induced variations between predicted and measured AT and ATFM. The following equations: total AT = - 12.74105 + (0.02919 × age) + (4.27634 × sex (M = 0, F = 1)) + (0.22008 × weight) + (26.92234 × AT T6-T7) + (23.70142 × AT L4-L5) + (37.94739 × AT mid-thigh) and total ATFM = - 33.10721 + (- 0.02363 × age) + (- 3.58052 × sex (M = 0, F = 1)) + (30.02252 × height) + (0.08549 × weight) + (11.36859 × ATFM T6-T7) + (27.82244 × ATFM L4-L5) + (58.62648 × ATFM mid-thigh) showed an excellent prediction (adjusted R2 = 97.2% and R2 = 92.5%; CCC = 0.986 and 0.962, respectively). There was no significant difference between predicted and measured methods regarding the AT variations (- 0.07 ± 2.02 kg, p = 0.70) and the ATFM variations (0.16 ± 2.41 kg, p = 0.49) induced by 2-months of exercise training. This simplified method allows a fully accurate assessment of the body composition of people with obesity in less than 20 min (10 min for images acquisition and analysis, respectively), useful for a follow-up.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review was to present updated evidence on the role of skeletal muscle mass on cardiometabolic health. RECENT FINDINGS Increased lean, and especially skeletal, muscle mass has been associated with better cardiometabolic health in various epidemiological studies, even in younger age groups. In addition, the link between skeletal muscle mass and adult lipid profile is of interest. A preliminary analysis using the data from the ATTICA prospective cohort study (2002-2022) supports this association. SUMMARY Skeletal muscle mass has many metabolic functions (i.e., glucose, insulin and protein metabolism, mitochondrial function, arterial stiffness, inflammation, oxidative stress, brain function, hormone status). Given its associations with the lipid profile and overall cardiometabolic risk, skeletal muscle mass stands among the emerging risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. In addition to only using body mass index or fat distribution, more studies should evaluate lean mass and its prognostic and predictive ability regarding chronic diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the longitudinal association between cognitive impairment and sarcopenia in a sample of Brazilian community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN Nine-year observational prospective study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A total of 521 community-dwelling older adults from 2 Brazilian sites of the Frailty in Brazilian Older Adults (FIBRA in Portuguese) study. METHODS Sarcopenia was defined as low hand-grip strength and low muscle mass. Cognitive impairment was determined at baseline using the Mini-Mental State Examination, with education-adjusted cutoff scores. The logistic regression model was used to assess the association between cognitive impairment and incident sarcopenia after adjusting for gender, age, education, morbidities, physical activity, and body mass index. Inverse probability weighting was applied to correct for sample loss at follow-up. RESULTS The mean age of the study population was 72.7 (±5.6) years, and 365 were women (70.1%). Being 80 years and older (odds ratio [OR], 4.62; 95% CI, 1.38-15.48; P = .013), being under- and overweight (OR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.11-0.76; P = .012, and OR, 5.12; 95% CI, 2.18-12.01; P < .001, respectively) and having cognitive impairment (OR, 2.44; 95% CI, 1.18-5.04; P = .016) at baseline predicted sarcopenia after 9 years. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Cognitive impairment may predict sarcopenia in Brazilian older adults. More studies are necessary to identify the main mechanisms shared by sarcopenia and cognitive decline, which could support the development of prevention interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain and sarcopenia are common in older people. Cross-sectional studies have reported a significant association between these two conditions, but cohort studies exploring pain as a potential risk factor for sarcopenia are scarce. Given this background, the aim of the present work was to investigate the association between pain (and its severity) at baseline, and the incidence of sarcopenia over 10 years of follow-up in a large representative sample of the English older adult population. METHODS Pain was diagnosed using self-reported information and categorized as mild to severe pain at four sites (low back, hip, knee, and feet). Incident sarcopenia was defined as having low handgrip strength and low skeletal muscle mass during the follow-up period. The association between pain at baseline and incident sarcopenia was assessed using an adjusted logistic regression analysis, and reported as odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The 4 102 participants without sarcopenia at baseline had a mean ± standard deviation age of 69.7 ± 7.2 years, and they were mainly male (55.6%). Pain was present in 35.3% of the sample. Over 10 years of follow-up, 13.9% of the participants developed sarcopenia. After adjusting for 12 potential confounders, people with pain reported a significantly higher risk of sarcopenia (OR = 1.46: 95% CI: 1.18-1.82). However, only severe pain was significantly associated with incident sarcopenia, without significant differences across the four sites assessed. CONCLUSIONS The presence of pain, particularly severe pain, was associated with a significantly higher risk of incident sarcopenia.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a novel tool to assess skinfolds and to compare the muscle mass measured through dual-x-ray-absorptiometry (DXA) and estimated using the Lee equation from the values of the skinfolds and girths in a healthy young adult population. Methods: The present study followed a cross-sectional design, including 38 participants, with 27 males (22.04 ± 5.20 years) and 11 females (21.55 ± 2.39 years). The measurement protocol included a DXA evaluation, basic measurements of body mass and stature, eight skinfolds with two skinfold calipers of different brands (Harpenden and Lipowise), and three girths. The order in which the skinfold calipers were used was randomized. The muscle mass was then calculated using the formula established by Lee et al. Results: No significant differences were found between the two skinfold calipers considering all the outcomes (p > 0.05). The correlation coefficients were between 0.724 and 0.991, which suggest very-large to nearly perfect correlations. The correlations performed revealed that muscle mass estimated from DXA is nearly perfectly correlated with both muscle mass estimated from the data obtained with the Harpenden skinfold caliper (r = 0.955) and muscle mass estimated from the data obtained with the Lipowise skinfold caliper (r = 0.954). From the results, we conclude that Lipowise caliper is an accurate skinfold caliper and it can be an alternative tool for the technician that need to assess body fat or muscle mass in precise, valid and time efficient evaluation. It should be noted that the caution to use skinfold calipers interchangeable with each other when evaluating skinfolds remains a necessity and is advisable to perform the measurements with the same brand and model of skinfold caliper when the purpose is to perform follow-up assessments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain may increase the risk for sarcopenia, but existing literature is only from high-income countries, while the mediators of this association are largely unknown. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between pain and sarcopenia using nationally representative samples of older adults from 6 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and to identify potential mediators. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the WHO Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) were analyzed. Sarcopenia was defined as having low skeletal muscle mass and weak handgrip strength, while the presence and severity of pain in the last 30 days were self-reported. Multivariable logistic regression and mediation analyses were performed. The control variables included age, sex, education, wealth, and chronic conditions, while affect, sleep/energy, disability, social participation, sedentary behavior, and mobility were considered potential mediators. RESULTS Data on 14,585 adults aged ≥65 years were analyzed (mean [SD] age 72.6 [11.5] years; 55.0% females). Compared to no pain, mild, moderate, severe, and extreme pain were associated with 1.42 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-1.94), 1.43 (95%CI = 1.02-2.00), 1.92 (95%CI = 1.09-3.37), and 2.88 (95%CI = 1.10-7.54) times higher odds for sarcopenia, respectively. Disability (mediated percentage 18.0%), sedentary behavior (12.9%), and low mobility (56.1%) were significant mediators in the association between increasing levels of pain and sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of pain were associated with higher odds for sarcopenia among adults aged ≥65 years in 6 LMICs. Disability, sedentary behavior, and mobility problems were identified as potential mediators. Targeting these factors in people with pain may decrease the future risk of sarcopenia onset, pending future longitudinal research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Physical activity interventions have been a proven effective means of preventing or treating overweight and obesity in children and adolescents. The results of these interventions in many cases are based on the determination of the effect they produce on anthropometric evaluations, which allow the calculation of health indices. However, the effects of physical activity interventions on anthropometric assessments in Chilean children and adolescents have not been systematized. The objective of this study is to provide a detailed protocol for a systematic review with meta-analysis that synthesizes the available evidence on the effect of physical activity interventions on anthropometric indicators and health indices in Chilean children and adolescents and identifies the field-based methods and health indices most used for body composition estimation. METHODS This protocol was performed according to the PRISMA declaration. MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, and Scielo databases will be systematically searched. Eligible studies will include randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs and pre-post studies. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is designed to provide up-to-date evidence that could significantly assist public health policy makers and implementers of physical activity interventions through evidence-based guidance and recommendations.

Abstract
BACKGROUD Sarcopenia is a common skeletal muscle syndrome that is common in older adults but can be mitigated by adequate and regular physical activity. The development and severity of sarcopenia is favored by several factors, the most influential of which are a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity. The aim of this observational longitudinal cohort study was to evaluate changes in sarcopenia parameters, based on the EWGSOP2 definition in a population of active older adults after eight years. It was hypothesized that selected active older adults would perform better on sarcopenia tests than the average population. METHODS The 52 active older adults (22 men and 30 women, mean age: 68.4 ± 5.6 years at the time of their first evaluation) participated in the study at two time points eight-years apart. Three sarcopenia parameters were assessed at both time points: Muscle strength (handgrip test), skeletal muscle mass index, and physical performance (gait speed), these parameters were used to diagnose sarcop0enia according to the EWGSOP2 definition. Additional motor tests were also performed at follow-up measurements to assess participants' overall fitness. Participants self-reported physical activity and sedentary behavior using General Physical Activity Questionnaire at baseline and at follow-up measurements. RESULTS In the first measurements we did not detect signs of sarcopenia in any individual, but after 8 years, we detected signs of sarcopenia in 7 participants. After eight years, we detected decline in ; muscle strength (-10.2%; p < .001), muscle mass index (-5.4%; p < .001), and physical performance measured with gait speed (-28.6%; p < .001). Similarly, self-reported physical activity and sedentary behavior declined, too (-25.0%; p = .030 and - 48.5%; p < .001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Despite expected lower scores on tests of sarcopenia parameters due to age-related decline, participants performed better on motor tests than reported in similar studies. Nevertheless, the prevalence of sarcopenia was consistent with most of the published literature. Abstract
BACKGROUND Skeletal muscle is a large and clinically relevant body component that has been difficult and impractical to quantify outside of specialized facilities. Advances in smartphone technology now provide the opportunity to quantify multiple body surface dimensions such as circumferences, lengths, surface areas, and volumes. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to test the hypothesis that anthropometric body measurements acquired with a smartphone application can be used to accurately estimate an adult's level of muscularity. METHODS Appendicular lean mass (ALM) measured by DXA served as the reference for muscularity in a sample of 322 adults. Participants also had digital anthropometric dimensions (circumferences, lengths, and regional and total body surface areas and volumes) quantified with a 20-camera 3D imaging system. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression procedures were used to develop the ALM prediction equations in a portion of the sample, and these models were tested in the remainder of the sample. Then, the accuracy of the prediction models was cross-validated in a second independent sample of 53 adults who underwent ALM estimation by DXA and the same digital anthropometric estimates acquired with a smartphone application. RESULTS LASSO models included multiple significant demographic and 3D digital anthropometric predictor variables. Evaluation of the models in the testing sample indicated respective RMSEs in women and men of 1.56 kg and 1.53 kg and R2's of 0.74 and 0.90, respectively. Cross-validation of the LASSO models in the smartphone application group yielded RMSEs in women and men of 1.78 kg and 1.50 kg and R2's of 0.79 and 0.95; no significant differences or bias between measured and predicted ALM values were observed. CONCLUSIONS Smartphone image capture capabilities combined with device software applications can now provide accurate renditions of the adult muscularity phenotype outside of specialized laboratory facilities. Abstract
BACKGROUND There are no data on the association between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and sarcopenia in older adults from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aimed to investigate the association between LTPA and sarcopenia in individuals aged ≥65 years living in six LMICs. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health (China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia and South Africa) were analysed. Sarcopenia referred to the presence of both low skeletal muscle mass and weak handgrip strength. LTPA was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and was analysed as a dichotomized variable [high LTPA (>150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous LTPA) or low LTPA (≤150 min/week)]. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess associations. RESULTS There were 14 585 individuals included in this study [mean (SD) age 72.6 (11.5) years; 55.0% women]. The prevalence of high LTPA and sarcopenia was 8.9% and 12.0%, respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders, low LTPA was significantly associated with higher odds for sarcopenia [prevalence odds ratio (POR) = 1.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.29-2.65] compared with high LTPA. Significant associations were found in women (POR = 3.22, 95% CI = 1.82-5.68) but not in men (POR = 1.52, 95% CI = 0.99-2.35). CONCLUSIONS A positive and significant association between low LTPA and sarcopenia was found among older adults from LMICs. The promotion of LTPA among older adults in LMICs may aid in the prevention of sarcopenia, especially among females, pending future longitudinal research.
