Metal nanoparticles and pesticides under global climate change: Assessing the combined effects of multiple abiotic stressors on soil microbial ecosystems

The soil is a vital resource that hosts many microorganisms crucial in biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem health. However, human activities such as the use of metal nanoparticles (MNPs), pesticides and the impacts of global climate change (GCCh) can significantly affect soil microbial communities (SMC). For many years, pesticides and, more recently, nanoparticles have contributed to sustainable agriculture to ensure continuous food production to sustain the significant growth of the world population and, therefore, the demand for food. Pesticides have a recognized pest control capacity. On the other hand, nanoparticles have demonstrated a high ability to improve water and nutrient retention, promote plant growth, and control pests. However, it has been reported that their accumulation in agricultural soils can also adversely affect the environment and soil microbial health. In addition, climate change, with its variations in temperature and extreme water conditions, can lead to drought and increased soil salinity, modifying both soil conditions and the composition and function of microbial communities. Abiotic stressors can interact and synergistically or additively affect soil microorganisms, significantly impacting soil functioning and the capacity to provide ecosystem services. Therefore, this work reviewed the current scientific literature to understand how multiple stressors interact and affect the SMC. In addition, the importance of molecular tools such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, proteomics, or metabolomics in the study of the responses of SMC to exposure to multiple abiotic stressors was examined. Future research directions were also proposed, focusing on exploring the complex interactions between stressors and their long-term effects and developing strategies for sustainable soil management. These efforts will contribute to the preservation of soil health and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

Nanomaterials in the environment and their pragmatic voyage at various trophic levels in an ecosystem

In the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials (NMs) have a huge credential in advancing the existing follow-ups of analytical and diagnosis techniques, drug designing, agricultural science, electronics, cosmetics, sports, textiles and water purification. However, NMs have also grasped attention of researchers onto their toxicity. In the present review, initially the development of notable NMs such as metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs), magnetic NPs, carbon-based NMs and quantum dots intended to be commercialized along with their applications are discussed. This is followed by the current scenario of NMs in the environment to widen the outlook on the concentration of NPs in the environmental compartments and the frequency of organism exposed to NPs at varied trophic levels. In order to understand the physiochemical and morphological significance of NPs in exhibiting toxicity, fate of NPs in the environment is briefly deliberated. This is further geared-up to glance in-sightedly on the organisms starting from primary producer to primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer and decomposers encountering NPs in their habitual niche. The state of NPs to which organisms are exposed, mechanism of NP uptake and toxicity, anomalies faced at each trophic level, concentration of NPs that is liable to cause toxicity and, biotransfer of NPs to the next generation and trophic level are detailed. Finally, the future prospects on bioaccumulation and biomagnification of NP-based products are conversed. Thus, the review would be noteworthy in unveiling the significance of NPs in forthcoming years combined with threat towards each organism in an ecosystem.

Carbon-based nanomaterials as inducers of biocompounds in plants: Potential risks and perspectives

Biocompounds are metabolites synthesized by plants, with clinically proven capacity in preventing and treating degenerative diseases in humans. Carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) are atomic structures that assume different hybridization and shape. Due to the reactive property, CNMs can induce the synthesis of metabolites, such as biocompounds in cells and various plant species, by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). In response, plants positively or negatively regulate the expression of various families of genes and enzymes involved in physiological and metabolomic pathways of plants, such as carbon and nitrogen metabolism, which are directly involved in plant development and growth. Likewise, ROS can modulate the expression of enzymes and genes related to the adaptation of plants to stress, such as the glutathione ascorbate cycle, the shikimic acid, and phenylpropanoid pathways, from which the largest amount of biocompounds in plants are derived. This document exposes the ability of three CNMs (fullerene, graphene, and carbon nanotubes) to positively or negatively regulate the activity of enzymes and genes involved in various plant species' primary and secondary metabolism. The mechanism of action of CNMs on the production of biocompounds and the effect of the translocation of CNMs on the growth and content of primary metabolites in plants are described. Adverse effects of CNMs on plants, prospects, and possible risks involved are also discussed. The use of CNMs as inducers of biocompounds in plants could have implications and relevance for human health, crop quality, and plant adaptation and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress.

Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Emerging concern of nano-pollution in agro-ecosystem: Flip side of nanotechnology

Nanomaterials (NMs) have proven to be a game-changer in agriculture, showcasing their potential to boost plant growth and safeguarding crops. The agricultural sector has widely adopted NMs, benefiting from their small size, high surface area, and optical properties to augment crop productivity and provide protection against various stressors. This is attributed to their unique characteristics, contributing to their widespread use in agriculture. Human exposure from various components of agro-environmental sectors (soil, crops) NMs residues are likely to upsurge with exposure paths may stimulates bioaccumulation in food chain. With the aim to achieve sustainability, nanotechnology (NTs) do exhibit its potentials in various domains of agriculture also have its flip side too. In this review article we have opted a fusion approach using bibliometric based analysis of global research trend followed by a holistic assessment of pros and cons i.e. toxicological aspect too. Moreover, we have also tried to analyse the current scenario of policy associated with the application of NMs in agro-environment.

Engineering the protein corona: Strategies, effects, and future directions in nanoparticle therapeutics

Nanoparticles (NPs) serve as versatile delivery systems for anticancer, antibacterial, and antioxidant agents. The manipulation of protein-NP interactions within biological systems is crucial to the application of NPs in drug delivery and cancer nanotherapeutics. The protein corona (PC) that forms on the surface of NPs is the interface between biomacromolecules and NPs and significantly influences their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Upon encountering proteins, NPs undergo surface alterations that facilitate their clearance from circulation by the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS). PC behavior depends largely on the biological microenvironment and the physicochemical properties of the NPs. This review describes various strategies employed to engineer PC compositions on NP surfaces. The effects of NP characteristics such as size, shape, surface modification and protein precoating on PC performance were explored. In addition, this study addresses these challenges and guides the future directions of this evolving field.

Agriculture and environmental management through nanotechnology: Eco-friendly nanomaterial synthesis for soil-plant systems, food safety, and sustainability

Through the advancement of nanotechnology, agricultural and food systems are undergoing strategic enhancements, offering innovative solutions to complex problems. This scholarly essay thoroughly examines nanotechnological innovations and their implications within these critical industries. Traditional practices are undergoing radical transformation as nanomaterials emerge as novel agents in roles traditionally filled by fertilizers, pesticides, and biosensors. Micronutrient management and preservation techniques are further enhanced, indicating a shift towards more nutrient-dense and longevity-oriented food production. Nanoparticles (NPs), with their unique physicochemical properties, such as an extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio, find applications in healthcare, diagnostics, agriculture, and other fields. However, concerns about their potential overuse and bioaccumulation raise unanswered questions about their health effects. Molecule-to-molecule interactions and physicochemical dynamics create pathways through which nanoparticles cause toxicity. The combination of nanotechnology and environmental sustainability principles leads to the examination of green nanoparticle synthesis. The discourse extends to how nanomaterials penetrate biological systems, their applications, toxicological effects, and dissemination routes. Additionally, this examination delves into the ecological consequences of nanomaterial contamination in natural ecosystems. Employing robust risk assessment methodologies, including the risk allocation framework, is recommended to address potential dangers associated with nanotechnology integration. Establishing standardized, universally accepted guidelines for evaluating nanomaterial toxicity and protocols for nano-waste disposal is urged to ensure responsible stewardship of this transformative technology. In conclusion, the article summarizes global trends, persistent challenges, and emerging regulatory strategies shaping nanotechnology in agriculture and food science. Sustained, in-depth research is crucial to fully benefit from nanotechnology prospects for sustainable agriculture and food systems.

The impact of nanomaterials on autophagy across health and disease conditions

Autophagy, a catabolic process integral to cellular homeostasis, is constitutively active under physiological and stress conditions. The role of autophagy as a cellular defense response becomes particularly evident upon exposure to nanomaterials (NMs), especially environmental nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoplastics (nPs). This has positioned autophagy modulation at the forefront of nanotechnology-based therapeutic interventions. While NMs can exploit autophagy to enhance therapeutic outcomes, they can also trigger it as a pro-survival response against NP-induced toxicity. Conversely, a heightened autophagy response may also lead to regulated cell death (RCD), in particular autophagic cell death, upon NP exposure. Thus, the relationship between NMs and autophagy exhibits a dual nature with therapeutic and environmental interventions. Recognizing and decoding these intricate patterns are essential for pioneering next-generation autophagy-regulating NMs. This review delves into the present-day therapeutic potential of autophagy-modulating NMs, shedding light on their status in clinical trials, intervention of autophagy in the therapeutic applications of NMs, discusses the potency of autophagy for application as early indicator of NM toxicity.

Root-Applied Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles and Their Specific Effects on Plants: A Review

With the pronounced increase in nanotechnology, it is likely that biological systems will be exposed to excess nanoparticles (NPs). Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are among the most abundantly produced nanomaterials in the world. Their widespread use raises fundamental questions related to the accumulation in the environment and further interactions with living organisms, especially plants. NPs present in either soil or soilless environments are absorbed by the plant root systems and further transported to the aboveground parts. After entering the cytoplasm, NPs interact with chloroplast, nucleus, and other structures responsible for metabolic processes at the cellular level. In recent years, several studies have shown the impact of nanoceria on plant growth and metabolic processes. Research performed on different plants has shown a dual role for CeO2 NPs. The observed effects can be positive or negative and strongly depend on the plant species, characterization, and concentrations of NPs. This review describes the impact of root-applied CeO2 NPs on plant growth, photosynthesis, metal homeostasis, and parameters of induced oxidative stress.

Silica nanoparticles inhibit cadmium uptake by the protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila without the need for adsorption

The simultaneous presence of nanoparticles (NPs) and heavy metals in the environment may affect their mutual biological uptake. Although previous studies showed that NPs could alter the cellular uptake of heavy metals by their adsorption of heavy metals, whether they could affect metal uptake without the need for adsorption is unknown. This study examined the effects of silica (SiO2) NPs on the uptake of Cd ion by the protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. We found that, even with negligible levels of adsorption, SiO2 NPs at concentrations of 3 to 100 mg/L inhibited Cd uptake. This inhibitory effect decreased as the ambient Cd concentration increased from 1 to 100 μg/L, suggesting the involvement of at least two transporters with different affinities for Cd. The transporters were subsequently identified by the specific protein inhibitors amiloride and tariquidar as NCX and ABCB1, which are responsible for the uptake of Cd at low and high Cd levels, respectively. RT-qPCR and molecular dynamics simulation further showed that the inhibitory effects of SiO2 NPs were attributable to the down-regulated expression of the genes Ncx and Abcb1, steric hindrance of Cd uptake by NCX and ABCB1, and the shrinkage of the central channel pore of the transporters in the presence of SiO2 NPs. SiO2 NPs more strongly inhibited Cd transport by NCX than by ABCB1, due to the higher binding affinity of SiO2 NPs with NCX. Overall, our study sheds new light on a previously overlooked influence of NPs on metal uptake and the responsible mechanism.

The impact of various forms of silver nanoparticles on the rhizosphere of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) - Shifts in microbiome structure and predicted microbial metabolic functions

The study investigated the effects of different silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the soil microbiome and wheat growth. For comparison purposes, a commercial fungicide and silver nitrate (AgNO3) were used. The results revealed three distinct groups of nanoparticles based on their impacts. Small-size AgNPs (10 nm) with a negative charge, as well as fungicide had limited effects on the microbiome, similar to the no-treatment control. Bigger in size (30-60 nm) and a negative charge AgNPs showed the most beneficial effects on soil microbiota shifts. These AgNPs increased the abundance of bacteria with beneficial traits such as nitrogen-fixing, urease, protease, and lignin degradation bacteria. The third type of AgNPs had a positive charge of nanostructure and influenced specific microbial populations, increasing the abundance of anaerobic and autotrophic groups of microorganisms, which could be assessed as a harmful shift for plants growth promotions and was similar to the AgNO3 treatment. Overall, the study emphasized the potential of AgNPs in agriculture not only as biocidal. The conducted study proved that AgNPs with bigger size/negative charge, used in low concentration can have a surprisingly stimulating effect on the positive characteristics of the rhizosphere microbiome. Moreover, the surface charge of AgNPs is a significant factor affecting microbial activity of wheat rhizosphere soil, which in this treatment is significantly similar to the AgNO3 treatment.

ZnO quantum dots alleviate salt stress in Salvia miltiorrhiza by enhancing growth, scavenging reactive oxygen species, and modulating stress-responsive genes

Experiments were conducted to investigate the alleviating effects of ZnO quantum dots (ZnO QDs) on salt stress in Salvia miltiorrhiza by comparing them with conventional ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The results demonstrated that compared with salt stress alone, foliar application of ZnO QDs significantly improved the biomass as well as the total chlorophyll and carotenoids contents under salt stress. ZnO QDs reduced H2O2 and MDA levels, decreased non-enzymatic antioxidant (ASA and GSH) content, and improved antioxidant enzyme (POD, SOD, CAT, PAL, and PPO) activity under salt stress. Metal elemental analysis further demonstrated that the ZnO QDs markedly increased Zn and K contents while decreasing Na content, resulting in a lower Na/K ratio compared to salt stress alone. Finally, RNA sequencing results indicated that ZnO QDs primarily regulated genes associated with stress-responsive pathways, including plant hormone signal transduction, the MAPK signaling pathway, and metabolic-related pathways, thereby alleviating the adverse effects of salt stress. In comparison, ZnO NPs did not exhibit similar effects in terms of improving plant growth, enhancing the antioxidant system, or regulating stress-responsive genes under salt stress. These findings highlight the distinct advantages of ZnO QDs and suggest their potential as a valuable tool for mitigating salt stress in plants.

Exploring vismodegib: A non-surgical breakthrough in the management of advanced periocular basal cell carcinoma

The management of periocular basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is challenging due to its proximity to the eyeball. Vismodegib, a Hedgehog pathway inhibitor, has emerged as a therapeutic option for locally advanced and metastatic BCC. To critically appraise the relevant evidence, we conducted a systematic review of observational and experimental studies assessing the efficacy and safety of vismodegib for periocular BCC. Thirty-seven trials, including 435 patients, were eligible. No randomized trials were retrieved. Complete and overall clinical response rates were 20-88 % and 68-100 %, respectively. Disease progression was observed at a maximum rate of 14 %. Recurrence rates varied between 0 % and 31 %. The most common side effects were muscle cramps, dysgeusia, weight loss and alopecia. Treatment with vismodegib improved health-related quality of life. In conclusion, vismodegib represents an important novel treatment for advanced periocular BCC, with good response rates and acceptable tolerability profile. Nevertheless, its full potential needs clarification through randomized controlled trials.

Silver nanoparticle ecotoxicity and phytoremediation: a critical review of current research and future prospects

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in various industries, including textiles, electronics, and biomedical fields, due to their unique optical, electronic, and antimicrobial properties. However, the extensive use of AgNPs has raised concerns about their potential ecotoxicity and adverse effects on the environment. AgNPs can enter the environment through different pathways, such as wastewater, surface runoff, and soil application and can interact with living organisms through adsorption, ingestion, and accumulation, causing toxicity and harm. The small size, high surface area-to-volume ratio, and ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) make AgNPs particularly toxic. Various bioremediation strategies, such as phytoremediation, have been proposed to mitigate the toxic effects of AgNPs and minimize their impact on the environment. Further research is needed to improve these strategies and ensure their safety and efficacy in different environmental settings.

Exposure concentration ratios and biological responses play a critical role in determining the joint toxicity of TiO2 nanoparticles and As(V) to the organism: The case study in marine algae Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Environmental risks of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) have been widely investigated while the understanding for joint toxicity mechanism of MNMs with other contaminants is still limited. This limitation may be attributed to variations in the concentration ratios of MNMs and co-existing contaminants in the real environment. To better assess the joint toxicity and clarify its underlying mechanisms, this study exposed Phaeodactylum tricornutum to different concentration combinations of nano-sized titanium dioxide (nTiO2) and As(V) at toxic unit (TU) ratios of 1:4,1:1, and 4:1. The results demonstrated that the joint toxicity modes of nTiO2 and As(V) varied with the TU ratios exhibiting synergism for 1:4, partially addition for 1:1, and antagonism for 4:1. Specifically, at low TU ratio of 1:4, the adsorption of As(V) by nTiO2 together with the subsequent internalization of nTiO2 promoted a significant enrichment of As in algae. Simultaneously, the up-regulation of pst (phosphate transporter) genes in charge of the As(V) transport molecular further exacerbated the enrichment of inorganic As in algae, while the down-regulation of ArsM (arsenite S-adenosylmethionine methyltransferases) genes in charge of the As metabolism inhibited As biotransformation from toxic inorganic to nontoxic organic, causing the aggravated accumulation of toxic inorganic As in algae. At higher TU ratios of 1:1 and 4:1, the accumulation of As decreased in algae due to the higher sedimentation of nTiO2 and thus the lower internalization of As-adsorbed nTiO2, as well as the down-regulation of pst genes restricting the transportation of As(V) into algal cells, which jointly accelerated the As biotransformation from toxic inorganic to nontoxic organic. Our results suggest that more attention should be paid to exposure concentration ratios of MNMs and co-existing contaminants and biological responses including bioavailability, bioaccumulation, biotransformation, which would play a critical role in determining the joint toxicity to the organism.

From lab to ecosystem: Understanding the ecological footprints of engineered nanoparticles

Nanotechnology has attained significant attention from researchers in past decades due to its numerous advantages, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and improved stability over conventional drug delivery systems. The fabrication of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerenes, metallic and metal oxide-based NPs, has been steadily increasing day due to their wide range of applications from household to industrial applications. Fabricated ENPs can release different materials into the environment during their fabrication process. The effect of such materials on the environment is the primary concern with due diligence on the safety and efficacy of prepared NPs. In addition, an understanding of chemistry, reactivity, fabrication process, and viable mechanism of NPs involved in the interaction with the environment is very important. To date, only a limited number of techniques are available to assess ENPs in the natural environment which makes it difficult to ascertain the impact of ENPs in natural settings. This review extensively examines the environmental effects of ENPs and briefly discusses useful tools for determining NP size, surface charge, surface area, and external appearance. In conclusion, the review highlights the potential risks associated with ENPs and suggests possible solutions.

Chronic toxicity and liver histopathology of mosquito fish (Gambusia holbrooki) exposed to natural and modified nanoclays

Nanoclays are found in the air, water, and soil, and modified nanoclays are being developed and used in several consumer products. For example, modified nanoclays are used to remove pollutants from wastewater. Ironically, however, nanoclays are now considered emerging contaminants. Indeed, release of modified nanoclays in aquatic systems, even as remediating agents, could adversely affect associated wildlife. However, aquatic organisms have interacted with natural nanoclays for millennia, and it is unclear if modified nanoclays induce stronger effects than the nanoclays that occur naturally. The concentrations over which nanoclays occur and illicit negative effects are not well studied. This study investigated the dose response of a natural nanoclay (Na+montmorillonite) relative to two modified nanoclays (Cloisite®30B and Novaclay™) on survival, body condition, and liver pathomorphology of Gambusia holbrooki after 14 days of exposure. Although none of the nanoclays affected survival and body condition of G. holbrooki over 14 days, each nanoclay induced histopathological changes in liver tissues at very low concentrations (LOAEL: 0.01 mgL-1). The effects of nanoclays on hepatic cell circulatory (blood cell aggregation with increased number of Kupffer cells and hemosiderin deposits), regressive (hepatocyte vacuolization), and degenerative (cell death) changes of mosquito fish varied among nanoclay types. Novaclay™ at low concentrations caused circulatory changes on hepatic tissues of G. holbrooki, whereas both natural nanoclays and Cloisite®30B showed little effect on circulatory endpoints. In contrast, all of the nanoclays induced regressive and degenerative changes on liver tissues of mosquito fish across all concentrations tested. This study clearly reveals that natural and modified nanoclays have important health implications for fish and other aquatic organisms. Consequently, the widespread use of modified nanoclays in several applications and increased release of natural nanoclays through erosion or other processes needs to be evaluated in more detail especially in the context of their safety for aquatic systems.

Single entity collision for inorganic water pollutants measurements: Insights and prospects

In the context of aquatic environmental issues, dynamic analysis of nano-sized inorganic water pollutants has been one of the key topics concerning their seriously amplified threat to natural ecosystems and life health. Its ultimate challenge is to reach a single-entity level of identification especially towards substantial amount of inorganic pollutants formed as natural or manufactured nanoparticles (NPs), which enter the water environments along with the potential release of constituents or other contaminating species that may have coprecipitated or adsorbed on the particles' surface. Here, we introduced a 'nano-impacts' approach-single entity collision electrochemistry (SECE) promising for in-situ characterization and quantification of nano-sized inorganic pollutants at single-entity level based on confinement-controlled electrochemistry. In comparison with ensemble analytical tools, advantages and features of SECE point at understanding 'individual' specific fate and effect under its free-motion condition, contributing to obtain more precise information for 'ensemble' nano-sized pollutants on assessing their mixture exposure and toxicity in the environment. This review gives a unique insight about the single-entity collision measurements of various inorganic water pollutants based on recent trends and directions of state-of-the-art single entity electrochemistry, the prospects for exploring nano-impacts in the field of inorganic water pollutants measurements were also put forward.

New insights into the environmental application of hybrid nanoparticles in metal contaminated agroecosystem: A review

Heavy metals (HMs) contamination in agricultural soils is a major constraint to provide safe food to society. Cultivation of food crops on these soils, channels the HMs into the food chain and causes serious human health and socioeconomic problems. Multiple conventional and non-conventional remedial options are already in practice with variable success rates, but nanotechnology has proved its success due to higher efficiency. It also led the hypothesis to use hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) with extended benefits to remediate the HMs and supplement nutrients to enhance the crop yield in the contaminated environments. Hybrid nanoparticles are defined as exclusive chemical conjugates of inorganic and/or organic nanomaterials that are combinations of two or more organic components, two or more inorganic components, or at least one of both types of components. HNPs of different elements like essential nutrients, beneficial nutrients and carbon-based nanoparticles are used for the remediation of metals contaminated soil and the production of metal free crops. Characterizing features of HNPs including particle size, surface area, reactivity, and solubility affect the efficacy of these HNPs in the contaminated environment. Hybrid nanoparticles have great potential to remove the HMs ions from soil solution and restrict their ingress into the root tissues. Furthermore, HNPs of essential nutrients not only compete with heavy metal uptake by plants but also fulfill the need of nutrients. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges associated with application of HNPs in contaminated soils, environmental implications, their remediation ability, and factors affecting their dynamics in environmental matrices.

This review thoroughly examines the complex relationship between plants and nanomaterials, highlighting their significant impact on ecological sustainability and ecosystem well-being. This study investigated the response of plants to nano-pollution stress, revealing the complex regulation of defense-related genes and proteins, and highlighting the sophisticated defense mechanisms in nature. Phytohormones play a crucial role in the complex molecular communication network that regulates plant responses to exposure to nanomaterials. The interaction between plants and nano-pollution influences plants' complex defense strategies. This reveals the interconnectedness of systems of nature. Nevertheless, these findings have implications beyond the plant domain. The incorporation of hyperaccumulator plants into pollution mitigation strategies has the potential to create more environmentally sustainable urban landscapes and improve overall environmental resilience. By utilizing these exceptional plants, we can create a future in which cities serve as centers of both innovation and ecological balance. Further investigation is necessary to explore the long-term presence of nanoparticles in the environment, their ability to induce genetic changes in plants over multiple generations, and their overall impact on ecosystems. In conclusion, this review summarizes significant scientific discoveries with broad implications beyond the confines of laboratories. This highlights the importance of understanding the interactions between plants and nanomaterials within the wider scope of environmental health. By considering these insights, we initiated a path towards the responsible utilization of nanomaterials, environmentally friendly management of pollution, and interdisciplinary exploration. We have the responsibility to balance scientific advancement and environmental preservation to create a sustainable future that combines nature's wisdom with human innovation.

Unveiling elemental fingerprints: A comparative study of clustering methods for multi-element nanoparticle data

Single particle-inductively coupled plasma-time of flight-mass spectrometers (SP-ICP-TOF-MS) generates large datasets of the multi-elemental composition of nanoparticles. However, extracting useful information from such datasets is challenging. Hierarchical clustering (HC) has been successfully applied to extract elemental fingerprints from multi-element nanoparticle data obtained by SP-ICP-TOF-MS. However, many other clustering approaches can be applied to analyze SP-ICP-TOF-MS data that have not yet been evaluated. This study fills this knowledge gap by comparing the performance of three clustering approaches: HC, spectral clustering, and t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding coupled with Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (tSNE-DBSCAN) for analyzing SP-ICP-TOF-MS data. The performance of these clustering techniques was evaluated by comparing the size of the extracted clusters and the similarity of the elemental composition of nanoparticles within each cluster. Hierarchical clustering often failed to achieve an optimal clustering solution for SP-ICP-TOF-MS data because HC is sensitive to the presence of outliers. Spectral clustering and tSNE-DBSCAN extracted clusters that were not identified by HC. This is because spectral clustering, a method developed based on graph theory, reveals the global and local structure in the data. tSNE reduces and maps the data into a lower-dimensional space, enabling clustering algorithms such as DBSCAN to identify subclusters with subtle differences in their elemental composition. However, tSNE-DBSCAN can lead to unsatisfactory clustering solutions because tuning the perplexity hyperparameter of tSNE is a difficult and a time-consuming task, and the relative distance between datapoints is not maintained. Although the three clustering approaches successfully extract useful information from SP-ICP-TOF-MS data, spectral clustering outperforms HC and tSNE-DBSCAN by generating clusters of a large number of nanoparticles with similar elemental compositions.

Amorphization of Low Soluble Drug with Amino Acids to Improve Its Therapeutic Efficacy: a State-of-Art-Review

Low aqueous solubility of drug candidates is an ongoing challenge and pharmaceutical manufacturers pay close attention to amorphization (AMORP) technology to improve the solubility of drugs that dissolve poorly. Amorphous drug typically exhibits much higher apparent solubility than their crystalline form due to high energy state that enable them to produce a supersaturated state in the gastrointestinal tract and thereby improve bioavailability. The stability and augmented solubility in co-amorphous (COA) formulations is influenced by molecular interactions. COA are excellent carriers-based drug delivery systems for biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS) class II and class IV drugs. The three important critical quality attributes, such as co-formability, physical stability, and dissolution performance, are necessary to illustrate the COA systems. New amorphous-stabilized carriers-based fabrication techniques that improve drug loading and degree of AMORP have been the focus of emerging AMORP technology. Numerous low-molecular-weight compounds, particularly amino acids such as glutamic acid, arginine, isoleucine, leucine, valine, alanine, glycine, etc., have been employed as potential co-formers. The review focus on the prevailing drug AMORP strategies used in pharmaceutical research, including in situ AMORP, COA systems, and mesoporous particle-based methods. Moreover, brief characterization techniques and the application of the different amino acids in stabilization and solubility improvements have been related.

A holistic NMR framework to understand environmental impact: Examining the impacts of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in Daphnia magna via imaging, spectroscopy, and metabolomics

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are a contaminant of emerging interest, often used in the medical field as an imaging contrast agent, with additional uses in wastewater treatment and as food additives. Although the use of SPIONs is increasing, little research has been conducted on the toxic impacts to living organisms beyond traditional lethal concentration endpoints. Daphnia magna are model organisms for aquatic toxicity testing with a well understood metabolome and high sensitivity to SPIONs. Thus, as environmental concentrations continue to increase, it is becoming critical to understand their sub-lethal toxicity. Due to the paramagnetic nature of SPIONs, a range of potential nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) experiments are possible, offering the potential to probe the physical location (via imaging), binding (via relaxation weighted spectroscopy), and the biochemical pathways impacted (via in vivo metabolomics). Results indicate binding to carbohydrates, likely chitin in the exoskeleton, along with a decrease in energy metabolites and specific biomarkers of oxidative stress. The holistic NMR framework used here helps provide a more comprehensive understanding of SPIONs impacts on D. magna and showcases NMR's versatility in providing physical, chemical, and biochemical insights.

Microbial bioprocess performance in nanoparticle-mediated composting

Microbial composting is one of the most cost-effective techniques for degradation, remediation, nutrition, etc. Currently, there is faster growth and development in nanotechnology in different sectors. This development leads nanoparticles (NPs) to enter into the composts in different ways. First, unintentional entry of NPs into the composts via: waste discharge, buried solid waste, surface runoff, direct disposal into wastes (consumer goods, food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products). Second, intentional mediation of the NPs in the composting process is a novel approach developed to enhance the degradation rate of wastes and as a nutrient for plants. The presence of NPs in the composts can cause nanotoxicity. Conversely, their presence might also be beneficial, such as soil reclamations, degradation, etc. Alternatively, metal NPs are also helpful for all living organisms, including microorganisms, in various biological processes, such as DNA replication, precursor biosynthesis, respiration, oxidative stress responses, and transcription. NPs show exemplary performance in multiple fields, whereas their role in composting process is worth studying. Consequently, this article aids the understanding of the role of NPs in the composting process and how far their presence can be beneficial. This article reviews the significance of NPs in: the composting process, microbial bioprocess performance during nano composting, basic life cycle assessment (LCA) of NP-mediated composting, and mode of action of the NPs in the soil matrix. This article also sheds insight on the notion of nanozymes and highlights their biocatalytic characterization, which will be helpful in future composting research.

Ecotoxicity of a mixture of nanoparticles on algal species Scendesmus obliquus in OECD growth media, wastewater, and pond water

The possible impact of ZnO and CuO nanoparticles (NPs) (individually and in binary mixture) was investigated using the freshwater microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus. The present study shows the effect of nanoparticles on algae in OECD growth media, wastewater, and pond water during a 96-h toxicity test. At 0.1 mg/L concentration of the mixture of NPs, the reduction in the chlorophyll a content was 13.61 ± 1.34% (OECD media), 28.83 ± 1.85% (wastewater), and 31.81 ± 2.23% (pond water). Values of reduction in biomass were observed to be 42.13 ± 1.38, 39.96 ± 1.03, and 33.10 ± 1.29% for OECD media, wastewater, and pond water, respectively. The highest increase in lipid values was observed in the case of pond water (6.3 ± 1.31%). A significant increase in the value of EPS-generated protein was observed in the wastewater sample. EPS-generated carbohydrate values were increased in OECD media but decreased in the wastewater matrix. The transmission electron microscope images showed structural damage to algae cells due to the exposure to a mixture of nanoparticles at higher concentrations. Fourier transform infrared analysis showed an addition of bonds and differences in the peak and its intensity during exposure to high concentrations of NPs. Overall, this study gives fundamental insights into the interaction and toxicity of a mixture of NPs to algal species in different water matrices.

Changes of microbiome in response to supplements with silver nanoparticles in cotton rhizosphere

The current study focuses on analyzing the effects of supplements containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on plant growth and rhizospheric bacterial communities. Specifically, the impact of AgNP supplements was assessed on both plant growth promoting traits and bacterial communities in the soil. To do this, a screening process was conducted to select bacteria capable of synthesizing AgNPs through extracellular biosynthesis. UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and field emission scanning electron microscopy all confirmed, produced AgNPs is in agglomerates form. The resulting AgNPs were introduced into soil along with various supplements and their effects were evaluated after 10 days using next generation sequencing (Illumina-16S rDNA V3-V4 region dependent) to analyze changes in bacterial communities. Seed germination, root-shoot biomass and chlorophyll content were used to assess the growth of the cotton plant, whereas the bacterial ability to promote growth was evaluated by measuring its culturable diversity including traits like phosphate solubilization and indole acetic acid production. The variance in Bray-Curtis β diversity among six selected combinations including control depends largely on the type of added supplements contributing to 95%-97% of it. Moreover, seed germination improves greatly between 63% and 100% at a concentration range of 1.4 to 2.8 mg/L with different types of supplements. Based on the results obtained through this study, it is evident that using AgNPs along with fructose could be an effective tool for promoting Gossypium hirsutum growth and enhancing plant growth traits like profiling rhizospheric bacteria. The results that have been obtained endorse the idea of boosting the growth of rhizospheric bacteria in a natural way when AgNPs are present. Using these supplements in fields that have been contaminated will lead to a better understanding of how ecological succession occurs among rhizospheric bacteria, and what effect it has on the growth of plants.

Critical evaluation of key parameters in single particle ICP-MS data processing for the correct determination of platinum nanoparticles in complex environmental and biological matrices

There is an urgent need for the harmonization of critical parameters in single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) and they have been deeply studied and optimized in the present work using platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) as a representative case of study. Special attention has been paid to data processing in order to achieve an adequate discrimination between signals. Thus, a comparison between four different algorithms has been performed and the method for transport efficiency calculation has also been thorougly evaluated (finding the use of a well-characterized solution of the same targeted analyte (30 nm PtNPs) as adequate). The best results have been obtained after the application of a deconvolution approach for the data processing and using 5 ms as dwell time and 40,000 data points for data acquisition. Under the optimized conditions, a correct discrimination between NP events and background signal up to 100 or 750 ng L-1 of added ionic Pt was reached for 30 and 50 nm PtNPs, respectively. The suitability of the developed method for the characterization of PtNPs in relevant environmental (water samples) and biological (cell culture media) matrices has also been demonstrated.

Engineered exosomes for tissue regeneration: from biouptake, functionalization and biosafety to applications

Exosomes are increasingly recognized as important effector molecules that regulate intercellular signaling pathways. Notably, certain types of exosomes can induce therapeutic responses, including cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and tissue repair. The use of exosomes in therapy is a hot spot in current research, especially in regenerative medicine. Despite the therapeutic potential, problems have hindered their success in clinical applications. These shortcomings include low concentration, poor targeting and limited loading capability. To fully realize their therapeutic potential, certain modifications are needed in native exosomes. In the present review, we summarize the exosome modification and functionalization strategies. In addition, we provide an overview of potential clinical applications and highlight the issues associated with the biosafety and biocompatibility of engineered exosomes in applications.

Challenges and Prospective of Enhancing Hydatid Cyst Chemotherapy by Nanotechnology and the Future of Nanobiosensors for Diagnosis

Hydatid cysts have been widely recognized for decades as a common medical problem that affects millions of people. A revolution in medical treatment may be on the prospect of nanotechnology enhancing chemotherapy against hydatid cysts. An overview of nanotechnology's impact on chemotherapeutics is presented in the current review. It discusses some of the challenges as well as some of the opportunities. The application of nanotechnology to enhance chemotherapy against hydatid cysts is what this review will explore. Nanotechnology is a critical component of delivering therapeutic agents with greater precision and efficiency and targeting hydatid cysts with better efficacy, and minimizing interference with surrounding tissue. However, there are biodistribution challenges, toxicity, and resistance problems associated with nanotherapeutics. Additionally, nanobiosensors are being investigated to enable the early diagnosis of hydatid cysts. A nanobiosensor can detect hydatid cysts by catching them early, non-invasively, rapidly, and accurately. The sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests can be enhanced with nanobiosensors because they take advantage of the unique properties of nanomaterials. By providing more precise and customized treatment options for hydatid cysts, nanotechnology may improve therapeutic options and strategies for diagnosing the disease. In conclusion, treatment with nanotechnology to treat hydatid cysts is potentially effective but presents many obstacles. Furthermore, nanobiosensors are being integrated into diagnostic techniques, as well as helping to diagnose patients earlier and more accurately.

Environmental effects and interaction of nanoparticles on beneficial soil and aquatic microorganisms

A steadily increasing production volume of nanoparticles reflects their numerous industrial and domestic applications. These economic successes come with the potential adverse effects on natural systems that are associated with their presence in the environment. Biological activities and effects of nanoparticles are affected by their entry method together with their specificities like their size, shape, charge, area, and chemical composition. Particles can be classified as safe or dangerous depending on their specific properties. As both aquatic and terrestrial systems suffer from organic and inorganic contamination, nanoparticles remain a sink for these contaminants. Researching the sources, synthesis, fate, and toxicity of nanoparticles has advanced significantly during the last ten years. We summarise nanoparticle pathways throughout the ecosystem and their interactions with beneficial microorganisms in this research. The prevalence of nanoparticles in the ecosystem causes beneficial microorganisms to become hazardous to their cells, which prevents the synthesis of bioactive molecules from undergoing molecular modifications and diminishes the microbe population. Recently, observed concentrations in the field could support predictions of ambient concentrations based on modeling methodologies. The aim is to illustrate the beneficial and negative effects that nanoparticles have on aqueous and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as the methods utilized to reduce their toxicity.

Comparative toxicity assessment of individual, binary and ternary mixtures of SiO2, Fe3O4, and ZnO nanoparticles in freshwater microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus: Exploring the role of dissolved ions

Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are considered among the most prevalent engineered nanomaterials. To have a deeper understanding of the mode of action of multiple metal oxide nanoparticles in mixtures, we have used a unicellular freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus as a model organism. The toxicity of silicon dioxide (SiO2), iron oxide (Fe3O4), and zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs was studied individually as well as in their binary (SiO2 + Fe3O4, Fe3O4 + ZnO, and ZnO + SiO2) and ternary (SiO2 + Fe3O4 + ZnO) combinations. The effects of metal ions from ZnO and Fe3O4 were investigated as well. The results observed from the study, showed that a significant amount of toxicity was contributed by the dissolved ions in the mixtures of the nanoparticles. Decreases in the cell viability, ROS generation, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic efficiency were analyzed. Among all the individual particles, ZnO NPs showed the maximum effects and increased the toxicities of the binary mixtures. The binary and ternary mixtures of the NPs clearly showed increased toxic effects in comparison with the individual entities. However, the ternary combination had lesser toxic effects than the binary combination of Fe3O4 + ZnO. The decline in cell viability and photosynthetic efficiency were strongly correlated with various oxidative stress biomarkers emphasizing the crucial role of reactive oxygen species in inducing the toxic effects. The findings from this study highlight the importance of evaluating the combinatorial effects of various metal oxide NPs as part of a comprehensive ecotoxicity assessment in freshwater microalgae.

Biocompatibility Evaluation of TiO2, Fe3O4, and TiO2/Fe3O4 Nanomaterials: Insights into Potential Toxic Effects in Erythrocytes and HepG2 Cells

Nanomaterials such as titanium dioxide and magnetite are increasingly used in several fields, such as water remediation and agriculture. However, this has raised environmental concerns due to potential exposure to organisms like humans. Nanomaterials can cause adverse interactions depending on physicochemical characteristics, like size, morphology, and composition, when interacting with living beings. To ensure safe use and prevent the risk of exposure to nanomaterials, their biocompatibility must be assessed. In vitro cell cultures are beneficial for assessing nanomaterial-cell interactions due to their easy handling. The present study evaluated the biocompatibility of TiO2, Fe3O4, and TiO2/Fe3O4 nanomaterials thermally treated at 350 °C and 450 °C in erythrocytes and HepG2 cells. According to the hemolysis experiments, non-thermally treated NMs are toxic (>5% hemolysis), but their thermally treated counterparts do not present toxicity (<2%). This behavior indicates that the toxicity derives from some precursor (solvent or surfactant) used in the synthesis of the nanomaterials. All the thermally treated nanomaterials did not show hemolytic activity under different conditions, such as low-light exposure or the absence of blood plasma proteins. In contrast, non-thermally treated nanomaterials showed a high hemolytic behavior, which was reduced after the purification (washing and thermal treatment) of nanomaterials, indicating the presence of surfactant residue used during synthesis. An MTS cell viability assay shows that calcined nanomaterials do not reduce cell viability (>11%) during 24 h of exposure. On the other hand, a lactate dehydrogenase leakage assay resulted in a higher variability, indicating that several nanomaterials did not cause an increase in cell death as compared to the control. However, a holotomographic microscopy analysis reveals a high accumulation of nanomaterials in the cell structure at a low concentration (10 µg mL-1), altering cell morphology, which could lead to cell membrane damage and cell viability reduction.

Retention and release of black phosphorus nanoparticles in porous media under various physicochemical conditions

Black phosphorus nanosheets/nanoparticles (BPNs) are widely applied in many fields. However, the transport of BPNs in the subsurface still has not yet been reported and there is increasing concern about potential adverse impacts on ecosystems. Roles of median grain size and surface roughness, BPN concentration, and solution chemistries (pH, ionic strength, and cation types) on the retention and release of BPNs in column experiments were therefore investigated. The mobility of BPNs significantly increased with increasing grain size and decreasing surface roughness due to their influence on the mass transfer rate, number of deposition sites and retention capacity, and straining processes. Transport of BPNs was enhanced with an increase in pH and a decrease in ionic strength because of surface deprotonation and stronger repulsion that tends to reduce aggregation. The BPN transport was significantly sensitive to ionic strength, compared with other engineered nanoparticles. Additionally, charge heterogeneity and cation-bridging played a critical role in the retention of BPNs in the presence of divalent cations. Higher input concentrations increased the retention of BPNs, probably because collisions, aggregation at pore throat locations, and hydrodynamic bridging were more pronounced. Small fractions of BPNs can be released under decreasing IS and increasing pH due to the expansion of the electrical double layer and increased repulsion at convex roughness locations. A mathematical model that includes provisions for advective dispersive transport and time-dependent retention with blocking or ripening terms well described the retention and release of BPNs. These findings provide fundamental information that helps to understand the transport of BPNs in the subsurface environments.

Acute exposure to tenorite nanoparticles induces phenotypic and behavior alterations in zebrafish larvae

Tenorite or copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are extensively used in biomedical fields due to their unique physicochemical properties. Increased usage of these NPs leads to release in the environment, affecting varied ecosystems and the biota within them, including humans. The effect of these NPs can be evaluated with zebrafish, an excellent complementary model for nanotoxicity studies. Previous reports focusing on CuO NPs-induced teratogenicity in zebrafish development have not elucidated the phenotypical changes in detail. In most of the studies, embryos at 3 hpf with a protective chorion layer were exposed to CuO NPs, and their effect on the overall developmental process is studied. Hence, in this study, we focused on the effect of acute exposure to CuO NPs (96-120 hpf) and its impact on zebrafish larvae. Larvae were exposed to commercially available CuO NPs (<50 nm) at various concentrations to obtain the LC50 value (52.556 ppm). Based on the LC50, three groups (10, 20, and 40 ppm) were taken for further analysis. Upon treatment, bradycardia, and impaired swim bladder (reduced/absence of inflation) were found in the treated groups along with alterations in the erythrocyte levels. Also, the angles and distance between the cartilages varied in the treated larvae affecting their craniofacial structures. There was a significant behavior change, as evidenced by the reduced touch escape response and locomotion (speed, distance, time mobile, time frozen, and absolute turn angle). Further, the acetylcholinesterase activity was reduced. Overall, our results suggest that acute exposure to CuO NPs elicits morphological defects in zebrafish larvae.

Single-Particle ICP-MS/MS Application for Routine Screening of Nanoparticles Present in Powder-Based Facial Cosmetics

The short- and long-term impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) in consumer products are not fully understood. Current European Union (EU) regulations enforce transparency on products containing NPs in cosmetic formulations; however, those set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are lacking. This study demonstrates the potential of single-particle inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (spICP-MS/MS) as a screening method for NPs present in powder-based facial cosmetics (herein referred to as FCs). A proposed spICP-MS/MS method is presented along with recommended criteria to confirm particle presence and particle detection thresholds in seven FCs. FC products of varying colors, market values, and applications were analyzed for the presence of Bi, Cr, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sn, Ag, Al, and Zn NPs based on their ingredient lists as well as those commonly used in cosmetic formulations. The presence of NPs smaller than 100 nm was observed in all FC samples, and no correlations with their presence and market value were observed. Here, we report qualitative and semi-quantitative results for seven FC samples ranging in color, brand, and shimmer.

The Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Digestive System, Gonad Morphology, and Physiology of Butterfly Splitfin (Ameca splendens)

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the morphology and enzymatic activity of butterfly splitfin (Ameca splendens). Individuals of both sexes, aged about five months, were exposed to AgNPs at concentrations of 0 (control group), 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/dm3 for 42 days. On the last day of the experiment, the fish were euthanized, subjected to standard histological processing (anterior intestine, liver, and gonads), and analysed for digestive enzyme activity in the anterior intestine and oxidative stress markers in the liver. Fish in the AgNP 0.01 and 0.1 groups had the lowest anterior intestinal fold and enterocyte height. However, there were no statistically significant changes in the digestive enzyme activity in the anterior intestine. Analysis of enzymatic activity in the liver showed an increase in superoxide dismutase activity in fish in the AgNP 0.1 group. Histological analyses showed that AgNPs inhibited meiotic divisions at prophase I in a non-linear manner in ovaries and testes. In the AgNP 0.1 and 1.0 groups, the area occupied by spermatocytes was lower compared to the other groups. These results indicate that exposure to AgNPs may lead to disturbances in morphology and enzymatic activity in the liver and intestine and may lead to disruption of reproduction in populations.

Efficacy of Biogenic Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Treating Wastewater for Sustainable Wheat Cultivation

Water scarcity due to overuse and growing water pollution has led to the need for upgrading of conventional methods of wastewater treatment. The biological synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and their photocatalytic capacity to degrade contaminants offer a promising and environment-friendly approach to municipal wastewater treatment. This technique is advantageous due to its cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and reduction in toxic residual substances. In this study, microbial-synthesized ZnO-NPs were used for the treatment of municipal wastewater. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of treated wastewater for wheat crop cultivation. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized from a pre-isolated bacterial strain, namely Shewanela sp., and characterized using UV-VIS, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The results showed that after the treatment of wastewater, the concentration of total dissolve solids (TDS), the chemical oxygen demand (COD), and sulfate and phosphate levels decreased by 76.5%, 57.1%, 81.1%, and 67.4%, respectively. However, the application of treated wastewater increased chlorophyll, carotenoids, and antioxidants by 45%, 40.8%, and 10.5 to 30.6%, respectively. Further, the application of treated wastewater also significantly decreased oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) by 8.1% and 30.1%, respectively. In conclusion, biosynthesized ZnO-NPs could be an important choice to treat municipal wastewater and to improve wheat productivity.

Statistical analysis, machine learning modeling, and text analytics of aggregation attachment efficiency: Mono and binary particle systems

The aggregation attachment efficiency (α) is the fraction of particle-particle collisions resulting in aggregation. Despite significant research, α predictions have not accounted for the full complexity of systems due to constraints imposed by particle types, dispersed matter, water chemistry, quantification methods, and modeling. Experimental α values are often case-specific, and simplified systems are used to rule out complexity. To address these challenges, statistical analysis was performed on α databases to identify gaps in current knowledge, and machine learning (ML) was used to predict α under various particle types and conditions. Moreover, text analytics was employed to support knowledge from statistics and ML, as well as gain insight into the ideas communicated by current literature. Most studies investigated α in mono-particle systems, but binary or higher systems require more investigation. Furthermore, our work highlights that numerous variables, interactions, and mechanisms influence α behavior, making its investigation complex and difficult for both experiments and modeling. Consequently, future research should incorporate more particle types, shapes, coatings, and surface heterogeneities, and aim to address overlooked variables and conditions. Therefore, building a comprehensive α database can enable the development of more accurate empirical models for prediction.

Dietary exposure to nTiO2 reduces byssus performance of mussels under ocean warming

Nano‑titanium dioxide (nTiO₂) is a widely used nanomaterial posing potential ecological risk for marine ecosystems that might be enhanced by elevated temperatures such as expected during climate change. nTiO₂ may affect benthic filter feeders like mussels through waterborne exposures and via food chain due to the adsorption on/in algae. Mussel byssus are proteinaceous fibers secreted by byssal glands of the mussels for attachment. Byssus production and mechanical properties are sensitive to environmental stressors but the combined effects of warming and nTiO₂ on byssus performance of mussels are unclear hampering our understanding of the predation and dislodgement risk of mussels under the multiple stressor scenarios. We explored the effects of a short-term (14-day) single and combined exposures to warming (28 °C) and 100 μg L^-1 nTiO₂ (including food co-exposure) on the byssus performance of the thick shell mussel Mytilus coruscus. The mechanical strength (measured as the breaking force) of the byssal threads was impaired by warming and nTiO₂ (including food co-exposure), but the number and length of the byssal threads were increased. The mRNA expression levels of mussel foot proteins (mfp-3, mfp-5) and pre-collagens (preCOL-D, preCOL-P, preCOL-NG) were up-regulated to varying degrees, with the strongest effects induced by warming. This indicates that the physiological and molecular mechanisms of byssus secretion are plastic. However, downregulation of the mRNA expression of preCOL-D and preCOL-P under the combined warming and nTiO₂ exposures indicate the limits of these plasticity mechanisms and suggest that the attachment ability and survival of the mussels may be impaired if the pollution or temperature conditions further deteriorate.

Interference Effects of Commercial Persistent Luminescence Materials on Rice Germination and Seedling Growth

Persistent luminescence materials (PLMs) are widely used across a multitude of fields due to their distinct optical properties. However, like other micron-sized materials such as microplastics, the production and recycling processes of PLMs can lead to their accumulation in soil and water, potentially posing detrimental effects on plant growth and development. In this study, we investigated the impact of commercially available blue PLM (bPLM), green PLM (gPLM), and red PLM (rPLM) on germination, seedling growth, and oxidative stress responses in rice. Our findings demonstrate that the morphology and size of PLMs do not significantly differ in their effects on rice growth. All three types of PLMs significantly inhibited root length and stem length, disrupted root cell structures, and decreased seedling biomass. Interestingly, gPLM and bPLM were found to stimulate the synthesis of osmolytes and chlorophyll in rice, while rPLM had the opposite effect. Changes in the antioxidant enzyme system in rice clearly indicated that the three types of PLMs induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage in rice. This study enhances our understanding of the potential environmental impacts of PLMs, offering valuable insights for the safe and responsible use of these materials in various applications.

Mechanistic study of the increased phototoxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles to Chlorella vulgaris in the presence of NOM eco-corona

Widespread applications and release of photoactive nanoparticles (NPs) such as titanium dioxide (TiO₂) into environmental matrices warrant mechanistic investigations addressing toxicity of NPs under environmentally relevant conditions. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of surface adsorbed natural organic matters (NOMs) such as humic acid, tannic acid and lignin on the band gap energy, abiotic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, surface chemistry and phototoxicity of TiO₂ NPs. Initially, a liquid assisted grinding method was optimized to produce TiO₂ NPs with a NOM layer of defined thickness for further analysis. Generally, adsorption of NOM reduced the band-gap energy of TiO₂ NPs from 3.08 eV to 0.56 eV with humic acid, 1.92 eV with tannic acid and 2.48 eV with lignin. Light activated ROS generation by TiO₂ NPs such as hydroxyl radicals, however, was reduced by 4, 2, 9 times in those coated with humic acid, tannic acid and lignin, respectively. This reduction in ROS despite decrease in band gap energy corroborated with the decreased surface oxygen vacancy (as revealed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)) and quenching of ROS by surface adsorbed NOM. Despite the reduced ROS generation, the NOM-modified TiO₂ NPs exhibited an increased phototoxicity to Chlorella vulgaris in comparison to pristine TiO₂ NPs. Further analysis suggested that photoactivation of NOM modified TiO₂ NPs releases toxic degradation products. Findings from our studies thus provide mechanistic insight into the ecotoxic potential of NOM-modified TiO₂ NPs when exposed to light in the environment.

Insights into the mechanism of histamine synthesis and recycling disruption induced by exposure to CdO NPs in the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)

Exposure to a sublethal concentration of CdO nanoparticles impairs the vision of the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) by disrupting histamine (HA) synthesis and recycling mechanisms. To gain more insights, we measured HA titer using HPLC in CdO NP-treated vs. non-treated adults in the current study and found that CdO NPs caused an increase in the level of HA in the head and the decapitated body. We asked whether HA accumulation (increase) is a response of photoreceptors or CNS histaminergic neurons, and whether there is any difference in the expression levels of HA recycling and transport encoding genes (Lovit, CarT, Ebony, Tan, BalaT) between the adult fly head and decapitated body that could explain this HA accumulation. We used GAL4/UAS system tool with three GAL4 drivers: ubiquitous tubP-GAL4, nervous system driver (elav Gal4), and compound eye drivers (sev Gal4 and GMR Gal4) to silence HA synthesis in site specific manner followed by detecting the expression level of genes involved in HA recycling and transport in both the heads and the decapitated bodies of CdO treated and non-treated flies. We found an increase in Lovit expression in the heads of treated adults, which is responsible for HA loading into synaptic vesicles and release from photoreceptors, as well as a decrease in catalytic enzymes involved in HA recycling, which leads to HA accumulation without increasing the real signal. To conclude, both photoreceptors and CNS histaminergic neurons are responsible for the increase in HA in CdO NP-treated flies, but through different mechanisms. Our results provide more insights on the underlying molecular mechanism of vision impairment because of nano-sized cadmium particles exposure.

Human and environmental impacts of nanoparticles: a scoping review of the current literature

Use of nanoparticles have established benefits in a wide range of applications, however, the effects of exposure to nanoparticles on health and the environmental risks associated with the production and use of nanoparticles are less well-established. The present study addresses this gap in knowledge by examining, through a scoping review of the current literature, the effects of nanoparticles on human health and the environment. We searched relevant databases including Medline, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, and SAGE journals, as well as Google, Google Scholar, and grey literature from June 2021 to July 2021. After removing duplicate articles, the title and abstracts of 1495 articles were first screened followed by the full-texts of 249 studies, and this resulted in the inclusion of 117 studies in the presented review.In this contribution we conclude that while nanoparticles offer distinct benefits in a range of applications, they pose significant threats to humans and the environment. Using several biological models and biomarkers, the included studies revealed the toxic effects of nanoparticles (mainly zinc oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, silver, and carbon nanotubes) to include cell death, production of oxidative stress, DNA damage, apoptosis, and induction of inflammatory responses. Most of the included studies (65.81%) investigated inorganic-based nanoparticles. In terms of biomarkers, most studies (76.9%) used immortalised cell lines, whiles 18.8% used primary cells as the biomarker for assessing human health effect of nanoparticles. Biomarkers that were used for assessing environmental impact of nanoparticles included soil samples and soybean seeds, zebrafish larvae, fish, and Daphnia magna neonates.From the studies included in this work the United States recorded the highest number of publications (n = 30, 25.64%), followed by China, India, and Saudi Arabia recording the same number of publications (n = 8 each), with 95.75% of the studies published from the year 2009. The majority of the included studies (93.16%) assessed impact of nanoparticles on human health, and 95.7% used experimental study design. This shows a clear gap exists in examining the impact of nanoparticles on the environment.

Encapsulated plant growth regulators and associative microorganisms: Nature-based solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change on plants

Over the past decades, the atmospheric CO₂ concentration and global average temperature have been increasing, and this trend is projected to soon become more severe. This scenario of climate change intensifies abiotic stress factors (such as drought, flooding, salinity, and ultraviolet radiation) that threaten forest and associated ecosystems as well as crop production. These factors can negatively affect plant growth and development with a consequent reduction in plant biomass accumulation and yield, in addition to increasing plant susceptibility to biotic stresses. Recently, biostimulants have become a hotspot as an effective and sustainable alternative to alleviate the negative effects of stresses on plants. However, the majority of biostimulants have poor stability under environmental conditions, which leads to premature degradation, shortening their biological activity. To solve these bottlenecks, micro- and nano-based formulations containing biostimulant molecules and/or microorganisms are gaining attention, as they demonstrate several advantages over their conventional formulations. In this review, we focus on the encapsulation of plant growth regulators and plant associative microorganisms as a strategy to boost their application for plant protection against abiotic stresses. We also address the potential limitations and challenges faced for the implementation of this technology, as well as possibilities regarding future research.

Dual role of pulmonary surfactant corona in modulating carbon nanotube toxicity and benzo[a]pyrene bioaccessibility

Inhaled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can deposit in the deep lung, where they interact with pulmonary surfactant (PS) to form coronas, potentially altering the fate and toxicity profile of CNTs. However, the presence of other contaminants in combination with CNTs may affect these interactions. Here, we used passive dosing and fluorescence-based techniques confirm the partial solubilization of BaPs adsorbed on CNTs by PS in simulated alveolar fluid. MD simulations were performed to elucidate the competition of interactions between BaPs, CNTs, and PS. We found that PS play two opposing roles in altering the toxicity profile of the CNTs. First, the formation of PS coronas reduce CNTs' toxicity by decreasing the hydrophobicity of the CNTs and decreasing their aspect ratio. Second, the interaction with PS increases the bioaccessibility of BaP through interactions with PS, which may exacerbate the inhalation toxicity of CNTs. These findings suggest that the inhalation toxicity of PS-modified CNTs should consider the bioaccessibility of coexisting contaminants, with the CNT size and aggregation state playing an important role.

Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Effects of Biosynthesized Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles

Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing field of research that studies materials having dimensions of less than 100 nanometers. It is applicable in many areas of life sciences and medicine including skin care and personal hygiene, as these materials are the essential components of various cosmetics and sunscreens. The aim of the present study was to synthesize Zinc oxide (ZnO) and Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) by using Calotropis procera (C. procera) leaf extract. Green synthesized NPs were characterized by UV spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to investigate their structure, size, and physical properties. The antibacterial and synergistic effects of ZnO and TiO₂ NPs along with antibiotics were also observed against bacterial isolates. The antioxidant activity of synthesized NPs was analyzed by their α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. In vivo toxic effects of the synthesized NPs were evaluated in albino mice at different doses (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight) of ZnO and TiO₂ NPs administered orally for 7, 14, and 21 days. The antibacterial results showed that the zone of inhibition (ZOI) was increased in a concentration-dependent manner. Among the bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus showed the highest ZOI, i.e., 17 and 14 mm against ZnO and TiO₂ NPs, respectively, while Escherichia coli showed the lowest ZOI, i.e., 12 and 10 mm, respectively. Therefore, ZnO NPs are potent antibacterial agents compared to TiO₂ NPs. Both NPs showed synergistic effects with antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and imipenem). Moreover, the DPPH activity showed that ZnO and TiO₂ NPs have significantly (p > 0.05) higher antioxidant activity, i.e., 53% and 58.7%, respectively, which indicated that TiO₂ has good antioxidant potential compared to ZnO NPs. However, the histological changes after exposure to different doses of ZnO and TiO₂ NPs showed toxicity-related changes in the structure of the kidney compared to the control group. The current study provided valuable information about the antibacterial, antioxidant, and toxicity impacts of green synthesized ZnO and TiO₂ NPs, which can be influential in the further study of their eco-toxicological effects.

Chitosan and chito-oligosaccharide: a versatile biopolymer with endless grafting possibilities for multifarious applications

Chito-oligosaccharides (COS), derived from chitosan (CH), are attracting increasing attention as drug delivery carriers due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mucoadhesive properties. Grafting, the process of chemically modifying CH/COS by adding side chains, has been used to improve their drug delivery performance by enhancing their stability, targeted delivery, and controlled release. In this review, we aim to provide an in-depth study on the recent advances in the grafting of CH/COS for multifarious applications. Moreover, the various strategies and techniques used for grafting, including chemical modification, enzymatic modification, and physical modification, are elaborated. The properties of grafted CH/COS, such as stability, solubility, and biocompatibility, were reported. Additionally, the review detailed the various applications of grafted CH/COS in drug delivery, including the delivery of small drug molecule, proteins, and RNA interference therapeutics. Furthermore, the effectiveness of grafted CH/COS in improving the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs was included. Finally, the challenges and limitations associated with the use of grafted CH/COS for drug delivery and outline directions for future research are addressed. The insights provided in this review will be valuable for researchers and drug development professionals interested in the application of grafted CH/COS for multifarious applications.

Chronic Engineered Nanoparticle Additions Alter Insect Emergence and Result in Metal Flux from Aquatic Ecosystems into Riparian Food Webs

Freshwater ecosystems are exposed to engineered nanoparticles (NPs) through discharge from wastewater and agricultural runoff. We conducted a 9-month mesocosm experiment to examine the combined effects of chronic NP additions on insect emergence and insect-mediated contaminant flux to riparian spiders. Two NPs (copper, gold, plus controls) were crossed by two levels of nutrients in 18 outdoor mesocosms open to natural insect and spider colonization. We collected adult insects and two riparian spider genera, Tetragnatha and Dolomedes, for 1 week on a monthly basis. We estimated a significant decrease in cumulative insect emergence of 19% and 24% after exposure to copper and gold NPs, irrespective of nutrient level. NP treatments led to elevated copper and gold tissue concentrations in adult insects, which resulted in terrestrial fluxes of metals. These metal fluxes were associated with increased gold and copper tissue concentrations for both spider genera. We also observed about 25% fewer spiders in the NP mesocosms, likely due to reduced insect emergence and/or NP toxicity. These results demonstrate the transfer of NPs from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems via emergence of aquatic insects and predation by riparian spiders, as well as significant reductions in insect and spider abundance in response to NP additions.

Nano-based smart formulations: A potential solution to the hazardous effects of pesticide on the environment

Inefficient usage, overdose, and post-application losses of conventional pesticides have resulted in severe ecological and environmental issues, such as pesticide resistance, environmental contamination, and soil degradation. Advances in nano-based smart formulations are promising novel methods to decrease the hazardous impacts of pesticide on the environment. In light of the lack of a systematic and critical summary of these aspects, this work has been structured to critically assess the roles and specific mechanisms of smart nanoformulations (NFs) in mitigating the adverse impacts of pesticide on the environment, along with an evaluation of their final environmental fate, safety, and application prospects. Our study provides a novel perspective for a better understanding of the potential functions of smart NFs in reducing environmental pollution. Additionally, this study offers meaningful information for the safe and effective use of these nanoproducts in field applications in the near future.
