Abstract
With antibiotic resistance on the rise, there is an urgent need for new antibacterial drugs and products to treat or prevent infection. Many such products in current use, for example human and veterinary antibiotics and antimicrobial food preservatives, were discovered and developed from nature. Natural selection acts on all living organisms and the presence of bacterial competitors or pathogens in an environment can favor the evolution of antibacterial adaptations. In this review, we ask if vultures, blow flies and other carrion users might be a good starting point for antibacterial discovery based on the selection pressure they are under from bacterial disease. Dietary details are catalogued for over 600 of these species, bacterial pathogens associated with the diets are described, and an overview of the antibacterial defenses contributing to disease protection is given. Biotechnological applications for these defenses are then discussed, together with challenges facing developers and possible solutions. Examples include use of (a) the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) gene sarcotoxin IA to improve crop resistance to bacterial disease, (b) peptide antibiotics such as serrawettin W2 as antibacterial drug leads, (c) lectins for targeted drug delivery, (d) bioconversion-generated chitin as an antibacterial biomaterial, (e) bacteriocins as antibacterial food preservatives and (f) mutualistic microbiota bacteria as alternatives to antibiotics in animal feed. We show that carrion users encounter a diverse range of bacterial pathogens through their diets and interactions, have evolved many antibacterial defenses, and are a promising source of genes, molecules, and microbes for medical, agricultural, and food industry product development.

Abstract
Antibiotics at subtherapeutic levels have been used in pig diets as antimicrobial growth promoters. However, concerns about antibiotic resistance have increased the demand for alternatives to these antimicrobial growth promoters. This review paper explores the mechanisms through which antimicrobial growth promoters and their alternatives exert their antimicrobial effects. Additionally, this systemic review also covers how modulation of intestinal microbiota by antimicrobial growth promoters or their alternatives affects intestinal health and, subsequently, growth of pigs. The mechanisms and effects of antimicrobial growth promoters and their alternatives on intestinal microbiota, intestinal health, and growth are diverse and inconsistent. Therefore, pig producers should carefully assess which alternative is the most effective for optimizing both profitability and the health status of pigs in their production system.

Abstract
The key step in the entire molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) preparation process is the formation of the complementary cavities in the polymer matrix through the template removal process. The template is removed using chemical treatments, leaving behind selective binding sites for target molecules within the polymer matrix. Other MIP preparation steps include mixing monomers and template molecules in the appropriate solvent(s), monomer-template complex equilibration, and polymerisation of the monomers around the template. However, template removal is the most important among all the preparation steps because the final structure, which can be accepted and recognised as the MIP, is obtained only after the template removal. A thorough analysis of the studies dedicated to MIP applications demonstrates that this MIP preparation step, namely the template removal, is relatively understudied. MIP template removal is especially challenging in the synthesis, where the molecular template is a macromolecule such as a protein. This review aims to provide a deliberate, systematic, and consistent overview of protein removal as the MIP template molecules. The most prevalent template removal methods are outlined for removing protein templates from electrochemically synthesised MIPs, particularly thin layers on electrodes used in electrochemical sensors. Five protein template removal approaches involving chemical treatment are highlighted, which include the utilisation of (i) chaotropic agents, (ii) salt, (iii) acidic cleavage, (iv) alkaline, and finally, (v) proteolytic treatment focusing on studies conducted over the past decade. In addition, we discuss the interactions driving the removal of protein templates in each approach and associated challenges. This review provides insights into MIPs protein template removal strategies while highlighting the prevalent issue of this understudied step of template removal.

Abstract
Chitosan is widely explored in the field of biomedicine due to its abundance and reported properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, mucoadhesion, and anti-microbial activity. Although our understanding of the immune response to chitosan has evolved, confusion remains regarding whether chitosan is a pro- or anti-inflammatory biomaterial. Tackling this knowledge gap is essential for the translation of chitosan-based biomaterials to clinical use. Herein, we provide an overview of the immune responses to chitosan, exploring the roles of endotoxin contamination and physiochemical properties in immunomodulation. Ultimately, this literature review concludes that various physiochemical properties, including molecular weight, degree of deacetylation and polydispersity, endotoxin contamination, and cellular environment, interplay in the complex process of chitosan immunomodulation, which can lead to both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
Hydrophobic ion pairing (HIP) complexation was found to be an efficient approach in modulating the release and enhancing the stability and encapsulation of hydrophilic macromolecules such as proteins in hydrophobic nano/microcarriers. The present work strives to develop and optimize the preparation of the HIP complex of the antimicrobial enzyme lysozyme (LYZ) with the ion-pairing agent (IPA) sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) relying on the quality-by-design (QbD) approach. The quality target product profile (QTPP) includes the achievement of maximal lipophilicity in a reversible manner to enable the maintenance of biological activity. The related critical quality attributes (CQAs) were defined as complexation efficacy, complex stability, enzyme recovery and activity. Three risk assessment (RA) tools were used to identify and rank the critical process parameters (CPPs) and critical material attributes (CMAs). From this assessment, the pH of the medium, LYZ:SDS molar ratio and drying conditions were determined as high-risk factors that need to be investigated. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, electrostatic titration was used as a smart approach to determine the optimum molar ratio at different pH values. Based on the predefined CQAs, pH 8 with an LYZ/SDS molar ratio of 1:8 was found to be the optimal condition for complexation efficiency and recovery (%) of a biologically active enzyme. A cost-effective drying process based on a ventilated oven was developed, which resulted in complex qualities comparable to those obtained by the commonly used freeze-drying method. In a nutshell, the optimum conditions for the preparation of the LYZ/SDS HIP complex were efficiently facilitated by the rational application of QbD principles and the utilization of efficient electrostatic titration and ventilated oven-drying methods.

Abstract
Recombinant protein production is an essential aspect of biopharmaceutical manufacturing, with Escherichia coli serving as a primary host organism. Protein refolding is vital for protein production; however, conventional refolding methods face challenges such as scale-up limitations and difficulties in controlling protein conformational changes on a millisecond scale. In this study, we demonstrate the novel application of flow microreactors (FMR) in controlling protein conformational changes on a millisecond scale, enabling efficient refolding processes and opening up new avenues in the science of FMR technology. FMR technology has been primarily employed for small-molecule synthesis, but our novel approach successfully expands its application to protein refolding, offering precise control of the buffer pH and solvent content. Using interleukin-6 as a model, the system yielded an impressive 96% pure refolded protein and allowed for gram-scale production. This FMR system allows flash changes in the reaction conditions, effectively circumventing protein aggregation during refolding. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to use FMR for protein refolding, which offers a more efficient and scalable method for protein production. The study results highlight the utility of the FMR as a high-throughput screening tool for streamlined scale-up and emphasize the importance of understanding and controlling intermediates in the refolding process. The FMR technique offers a promising approach for enhancing protein refolding efficiency and has demonstrated its potential in streamlining the process from laboratory-scale research to industrial-scale production, making it a game-changing technology in the field.

Abstract
Elysia crispata is a tropical sea slug that can retain intracellular functional chloroplasts from its algae prey, a mechanism termed kleptoplasty. This sea slug, like other gastropods, secretes mucus, a viscous secretion with multiple functions, including lubrication, protection, and locomotion. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of the mucus proteome of the sea slug E. crispata using gel electrophoresis and HPLC-MS/MS. We identified 306 proteins in the mucus secretions of this animal, despite the limited entries for E. crispata in the Uniprot database. The functional annotation of the mucus proteome using Gene Ontology identified proteins involved in different functions such as hydrolase activity (molecular function), carbohydrate-derived metabolic processes (biological processes) and cytoskeletal organization (cell component). Moreover, a high proportion of proteins with enzymatic activity in the mucus of E. crispata suggests potential biotechnological applications including antimicrobial and antitumor activities. Putative antimicrobial properties are reinforced by the high abundance of hydrolases. This study also identified proteins common in mucus samples from various species, supporting a common mechanism of mucus in protecting cells and tissues while facilitating animal movement. SIGNIFICANCE: Marine species are increasingly drawing the interest of researchers for their role in discovering new bioactive compounds. The study "Proteomic Analysis of the Mucus of the Photosynthetic Sea Slug Elysia crispata" is a pioneering effort that uncovers the complex protein content in this fascinating sea slug's mucus. This detailed proteomic study has revealed proteins with potential use in biotechnology, particularly for antimicrobial and antitumor purposes. This research is a first step in exploring the possibilities within the mucus of Elysia crispata, suggesting the potential for new drug discoveries. These findings could be crucial in developing treatments for severe diseases, especially those caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, and may lead to significant advances in medical research.

Abstract
This study is an extension of our previous studies in which the lysozyme was isolated and purified from Bacillus subtilis BSN314 (Naveed et al., 2022; Naveed et al., 2023). In this study, the lysozyme genes were cloned into the E. coli BL21. For the expression of lysozyme in E. coli BL21, two target genes, Lyz-1 and Lyz-2, were ligated into the modified vector pET28a to generate pET28a-Lyz1 and pET28a-Lyz2, respectively. To increase the production rate of the enzyme, 0.5-mM concentration of IPTG was added to the culture media and incubated at 37 °C and 220 rpm for 24 h. Lyz1 was identified as N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase and Lyz2 as D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase. They were purified by multi-step methodology (ammonium sulfate, precipitation, dialysis, and ultrafiltration), and antimicrobial activity was determined. For Lyz1, the lowest MIC/MBC (0.25 μg/mL; with highest ZOI = 22 mm) were recorded against Micrococcus luteus, whereas the highest MIC/MBC with lowest ZOI were measured against Salmonella typhimurium (2.50 μg /mL; with ZOI = 10 mm). As compared with Aspergillus oryzae (MIC/MFC; 3.00 μg/mL), a higher concentration of lysozyme was required to control the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (MIC/MFC; 50 μg/mL). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to analyze the disintegrating effect of Lyz1 on the cells of selected Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and yeast. The AFM results showed that, as compared to Gram-negative bacteria, a lower concentration of lysozyme (Lyz1) was required to disintegrate the cell of Gram-positive bacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mare-foal relationship is essential for the well-being and growth of a foal. Mare's milk provides a foal with nutrients, protective immunity, and microbes. Within the first two weeks of life, there is a risk for a foal to suffer from diarrhea, particularly "foal heat diarrhea" which happens at about the time of a mare's estrus cycle but is more likely due to transitions in the microbiota in the foal's gastrointestinal (GI) tract. We hypothesized that this GI microbiota transition could be caused by changes in lysozyme and microbial populations in the mare's milk. To test this hypothesis, fifteen mare-foal pairs were followed in the first 15 days post-foaling. Every other day milk was collected from mares and rectal swabs were collected from foals. Lysozyme activity in the mare's milk was measured using a fluorescence assay. Microbial DNA was isolated from the milk and swabs and the V4 domain of 16 S rRNA genes were PCR amplified and sequenced using Illumina MiSeq technology. Microbial populations were analyzed using DADA2 and phyloseq within R. RESULTS Mare's milk lysozyme activity peaked for samples at Day 1 and levels dropped to 72.5% of Day 1 activity by Day 15; however, microbial populations in the mare's milk did not vary significantly over the two weeks. Furthermore, levels of microbial diversity found in foal rectal swabs were initially similar to microbial diversity seen in mare's milk; however, over the first fifteen days, diversity increased for the foal rectal swab microbiota and swab microbial populations differed from milk microbes. A transition occurred shifting from microbes from the phylum Proteobacteria early in rectal swabs to those primarily from the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidota after the first few days post-foaling. These phyla contained several families and genera of microbes that promote utilization of milk components in healthy gut transition. Microbial abundance levels correlated more with days post-parturition than with lysozyme activity and mare's milk microbial populations. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that much of the microbial populations responsible for the transition of the foal's gut comes from sources outside of mare's milk species and levels of lysozyme activity.

Abstract
The impact of microbial muramidase (MMUR) addition to broiler chicken rations was evaluated through growth parameters, liver histoarchitecture, antioxidant status, biochemical analysis, and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines for 35 days. Four hundred three-day-old chicks (97.68 ± 0.59 g) were distributed to four distinct groups with ten duplicates each (100 chicks/group) consisting of: group 1 (G1): a basal diet without MMUR (control group); G2: a basal diet + 200 mg MMUR kg-1 G3: a basal diet + 400 mg MMUR kg-1; and G4: a basal diet + 600 mg MMUR kg-1. The results showed that the final body weight and total weight gain were increased (p = 0.015) in birds fed with diets supplemented with MMUR at 600 mg kg-1. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was improved in all treatment groups compared with the control group. Birds fed with a diet supplemented with 600 mg MMUR kg-1 showed the highest body weight gain and improved FCR. The values of thyroxin hormones and growth hormones were increased in all MMUR-supplemented groups. Dietary MMUR increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (total antioxidant activity, catalase, and superoxide dismutase) and decreased the activity of malondialdehyde (p < 0.05). In addition, it increased the values of interleukin 1 beta and interferon-gamma compared with the control group. Furthermore, dietary MMUR increased the expression of transforming growth factor-beta immunostaining in the liver and spleen tissues. Our results show that supplementing broilers' diets with 600 mg MMUR kg-1 could enhance the chicken growth rate and improve their antioxidant, inflammatory, and anti-inflammatory responses.

Abstract
The controlled supply of bioactive molecules is a subject of debate in animal nutrition. The release of bioactive molecules in the target organ, in this case the intestine, results in improved feed, as well as having a lower environmental impact. However, the degradation of bioactive molecules' in transit in the gastrointestinal passage is still an unresolved issue. This paper discusses the feasibility of a simple and cost-effective procedure to bypass the degradation problem. A solid/liquid adsorption procedure was applied, and the operating parameters (pH, reaction time, and LY initial concentration) were studied. Lysozyme is used in this work as a representative bioactive molecule, while Adsorbo®, a commercial mixture of clay minerals and zeolites which meets current feed regulations, is used as the carrier. A maximum LY loading of 32 mgLY/gAD (LY(32)-AD) was obtained, with fixing pH in the range 7.5-8, initial LY content at 37.5 mgLY/gAD, and reaction time at 30 min. A full characterisation of the hybrid organoclay highlighted that LY molecules were homogeneously spread on the carrier's surface, where the LY-carrier interaction was mainly due to charge interaction. Preliminary release tests performed on the LY(32)-AD synthesised sample showed a higher releasing capacity, raising the pH from 3 to 7. In addition, a preliminary Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assay showed an antioxidant capacity for the LY of 1.47 ± 0.18 µmol TroloxEq/g with an inhibition percentage of 33.20 ± 3.94%.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of lysozyme-cinnamaldehyde conjugates (LC) as a potential alternative to antibiotics in treating piglets infected with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The results demonstrated that piglets fed with the LC diet exhibited lower rectal temperature and fecal scores at 9 h, 24 h, and 48 h post-ETEC challenge. Furthermore, LC supplementation led to significant improvements in the mechanical and immune barriers of the jejunum and ileum, as indicated by an increased villi-height-to-crypt-depth ratio (VCR) and the expression of tight junction proteins, mucin, and β-defensins. Furthermore, the LC diet lowered the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β in the plasma. Further analyses showed that the LC diet downregulated genes (specifically TLR4 and MyD88) linked to the TLRs/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway in the small intestine. Additionally, 16SrDNA sequencing data revealed that LC supplementation increased the α diversity of intestinal microorganisms and the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. In summary, the LC-supplemented diet effectively mitigated the adverse effects of E. coli K88, including intestinal barrier damage and inflammation. Furthermore, it improved the structure of the intestinal flora, ultimately contributing to better growth performance in piglets.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been widely found and studied in soil and water environments. However, the propagation of ARGs in plant microbiomes has attracted insufficient attention. Plant microbiomes, especially the rhizosphere microorganisms, are closely connected with water, soil, and air, which allows ARGs to spread widely in ecosystems and pose a threat to human health after entering the human body with bacteria. Therefore, it is necessary to deeply understand and explore the dynamics and the transmission of ARGs in rhizosphere microorganisms and endophytes of plants. In this review, the transmission and influencing factors of ARGs in the microorganisms associated with plants, especially the influence of root exudates on plant microbiomes, are analyzed. Notably, the role of intrinsic genes of plants in determining root exudates and their potential effects on ARGs are proposed and analyzed. The important role of phyllosphere microorganisms and endophytes in the transmission of ARGs and co-resistance of antibiotics and other substances are also emphasized. The proliferation and transmission of ARGs associated with plant microbiomes addressed in this review is conducive to revealing the fate of ARGs in plant microorganisms and alleviating ARG pollution.

Abstract
Introduction The study aims to describe phageome of soil rhizosphere of M.oleifera in terms of the genes encoding CAZymes and other KEGG enzymes. Methods Genes of the rhizospheric virome of the wild plant species Moringa oleifera were investigated for their ability to encode useful CAZymes and other KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) enzymes and to resist antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the soil. Results Abundance of these genes was higher in the rhizospheric microbiome than in the bulk soil. Detected viral families include the plant viral family Potyviridae as well as the tailed bacteriophages of class Caudoviricetes that are mainly associated with bacterial genera Pseudomonas, Streptomyces and Mycobacterium. Viral CAZymes in this soil mainly belong to glycoside hydrolase (GH) families GH43 and GH23. Some of these CAZymes participate in a KEGG pathway with actions included debranching and degradation of hemicellulose. Other actions include biosynthesizing biopolymer of the bacterial cell wall and the layered cell wall structure of peptidoglycan. Other CAZymes promote plant physiological activities such as cell-cell recognition, embryogenesis and programmed cell death (PCD). Enzymes of other pathways help reduce the level of soil H2O2 and participate in the biosynthesis of glycine, malate, isoprenoids, as well as isoprene that protects plant from heat stress. Other enzymes act in promoting both the permeability of bacterial peroxisome membrane and carbon fixation in plants. Some enzymes participate in a balanced supply of dNTPs, successful DNA replication and mismatch repair during bacterial cell division. They also catalyze the release of signal peptides from bacterial membrane prolipoproteins. Phages with the most highly abundant antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) transduce species of bacterial genera Pseudomonas, Streptomyces, and Mycobacterium. Abundant mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in the rhizosphere include "antibiotic efflux pump" for ARGs soxR, OleC, and MuxB, "antibiotic target alteration" for parY mutant, and "antibiotic inactivation" for arr-1. Discussion These ARGs can act synergistically to inhibit several antibiotics including tetracycline, penam, cephalosporin, rifamycins, aminocoumarin, and oleandomycin. The study highlighted the issue of horizontal transfer of ARGs to clinical isolates and human gut microbiome.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the dietary riboflavin requirement and its effects on growth performance, feed utilization, innate immunity, and diet digestibility of Litopenaeus vannamei. A riboflavin-free basal diet (R0) was formulated as a control, and six other diets were prepared by adding riboflavin of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 mg/kg to the basal diet (designated as R10, R20, R30, R40, R50, and R60, respectively). Quadruplicate groups of shrimp (initial average weight 0.17 ± 0.00 g) were fed the diets six times a day for 8 weeks. Weight gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio were significantly increased by riboflavin (p < 0.05). The maximum values were observed in shrimp fed R40 diet. The highest activities of phenoloxidase, nitro blue tetrazolium, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase were observed in shrimp fed R40 diet. Lysozyme activity was significantly higher in shrimp fed R30 and R40 diets than that of shrimp fed R60 diet (p < 0.05). Intestinal villi were significantly longer in shrimp fed R50 and R60 diets compared to those of all other groups while the shortest villi were observed in R0 group (p < 0.05). Intestinal villi were clearly distinguished in shrimp fed higher levels of riboflavin compared to those of shrimp fed R0 and R10 diets. Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter and protein in diets were not significantly affected by riboflavin levels (p < 0.05). Whole-body proximate composition and hemolymph biochemical parameters were not significantly altered by dietary riboflavin (p < 0.05). Therefore, the results of this study indicate that riboflavin is essential to enhance growth performance, feed utilization, nonspecific immunity, and intestine morphology of shrimp. An optimal riboflavin requirement for the maximum growth of L. vannamei seems to be approximately 40.9 mg/kg diet.

Abstract
In this study, multiple spectroscopic and computational methods were utilized to investigate the binding mechanism of doxofylline with lysozyme. The in vitro methods were used to obtain the binding kinetics and thermodynamics. UV-vis spectroscopy indicated the formation of complex between doxofylline and lysozyme. The Gibb's free energy and binding constant from UV-vis data was obtained as -7.20 kcal M-1 and 1.929 × 105 M-1, respectively. Doxofylline successfully quenched the fluorescence of lysozyme, confirming the formation of complex. The kq and Ksv values for the quenching of lysozyme's fluorescence by doxofylline were 5.74 × 1011 M-1 s-1 and 3.32 × 103 M-1, respectively. These values signified a moderate binding affinity between doxofylline and lysozyme. In synchronous spectroscopy, red shifts were observed for indicating the changes in microenvironment of lysozyme following the binding of doxofylline. The secondary structural analysis was determined using circular dichroism (CD) which revealed an increase in % α-helical as a result of doxofylline interaction. The binding affinity and flexibility of lysozyme upon complexation have been revealed via molecular docking and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, respectively. According to the many parameters of the MD simulation, the lysozyme-doxofylline complex was stable under physiological conditions. All during the simulation time, hydrogen bonds were continuously present. The MM-PBSA binding energy for lysozyme and doxofylline binding was found to be -30.55 kcal mol-1.

Abstract
The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is a complex, dynamic, and critical part of the body, which plays an important role in the digestion and absorption of ingested nutrients and excreting waste products of digestion. In addition, GIT also plays a vital role in preventing the entry of harmful substances and potential pathogens into the bloodstream. The gastrointestinal tract hosts a significant number of microbes, which throughout their metabolites, directly interact with the hosts. In modern intensive animal farming, many factors can disrupt GIT functions. As dietary nutrients and biologically active substances play important roles in maintaining homeostasis and eubiosis in the GIT, this review aims to summarize the current status of our knowledge on the most important areas.

Abstract
Bone tissue engineering is an emerging technology that has been developed in recent years to address bone abnormalities by repairing, regenerating and replacing damaged/injured tissues. In present work, we report the fabrication and characterization of porous luffa-based composite scaffolds composed of Luffa cylindrica (sponge gourd) powder (LC)/hydroxyapatite (HA), psyllium husk (PH) and gelatin (G) in various combinations (w/v) i.e. 3% LC, 5% LC and control (C) (without luffa powder) by using freeze-drying method. The structural stability of the scaffolds was obtained after chemically crosslinking them with glutaraldehyde (GTA), which was identified via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The hydrophilic behavior of the samples was quantified by water contact angle measurements. The average pore size of the scaffolds was observed in a range of 20-240 µm. As per the obtained data, the apparent and effective porosities were estimated as ∼57.08 ± 4.38%, ∼50.58 ± 4.09%, ∼59.45 ± 1.60% and 51.37 ± 3.36%, 47.94 ± 4.57% and 53.09 ± 5.45% for 3% LC, 5% LC and control (C) scaffolds, respectively. The scaffolds were found to be noticeably stable for 50 days at 37 °C in a lysozyme solution. The liquid retention capacity of the scaffolds revealed that the luffa-based scaffolds gained lower retention capacity compared to the control (C) scaffold; indicating an increase in scaffold stiffness due to the addition of luffa. Compressive strength study demonstrated that the mechanical stability of the fabricated luffa-based scaffolds got increased significantly from ∼1.5 to ∼9.5 MPa, which is comparable to that of trabecular bone. In addition, proliferation and viability analysis of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells revealed a significant level of cellular compatibility i.e. approaching ∼64% proliferation by 6th day in vitro compared to control. Thus, the obtained results demonstrate that the fabricated novel luffa-based scaffolds exhibit good cytocompatibility, remarkable porosity and excellent mechanical strength comparable to native human bone. Therefore, we anticipate that the developed luffa-based scaffolds could be a promising candidate for bone tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infection, especially its drug-resistant bacterial infection, is a great challenge often faced by clinicians and patients, and it is also one of the most important threats to public health. Finding a safe and effective antibacterial agent is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of S. aureus infection. Lysozyme is known to have antibacterial effects against Gram-positive bacteria including S. aureus. Here, high-quality lysozyme with a purity of more than 99% and an activity of more than 60, 000 U/mg was prepared from egg white, which showed excellent antibacterial activity against three strains of S. aureus, especially against MRSA. Furthermore, an antibacterial cream loaded with lysozyme was prepared and tested in scald wound healing. The lysozyme-loaded cream exhibited the effect of preventing wound infection and promoting wound healing on scalds, and no toxicity was found in animal organs. Overall, lysozyme showed great application potential in the prevention and treatment of infections caused by S. aureus and scalded wound healing. The most remarkable discovery in this work is the unexpectedly powerful inhibitory effect of lysozyme on the drug-resistant bacterial, especially MRSA, which is usually very difficult to deal with using normal antibacterial drugs.

Abstract
Lysozyme (LYS) applications encompass anti-bacterial activity, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this work, a porous framework that was based on the polymerization of pyrrole (PPy) in the presence of multi-functional graphene oxide/iron oxide composite (GO@Fe3O4) has been developed. Oxygen-containing and amine groups that were present in the nanocomposite were availed to assembly LYS as the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) template. The synthesized material (MIPPy/GO@Fe3O4) was electrodeposited on top of a gold microelectrode array. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to confirm the adequate preparation of GO@Fe3O4, and the characterization of the resulting molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor (MIECS) was carried out by electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS), FT-IR analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The impedimetric responses were analyzed mathematically by fitting to a Q(Q(RW)) equivalent circuit and quantitative determination of LYS was obtained in a linear range from 1 pg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL, presenting good precision (RSD ≈ 10%, n = 5) and low limit of detection (LOD = 0.009 pg/mL). The fabrication of this device is relatively simple, scalable, rapid, and economical, and the sensor can be used up to nine times without disintegration. The MIECS was successfully applied to the determination of LYS in fresh chicken egg white sample and in a commercial drug, resulting in a straightforward platform for the routine monitoring of LYS.

Abstract
The discovery of the use of antibiotics to enhance growth in the 1950s proved to be one of the most dramatic and influential in the history of animal agriculture. Antibiotics have served animal agriculture, as well as human and animal medicine, well for more than seven decades, but emerging from this tremendous success has been the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance. Consequently, human medicine and animal agriculture are being called upon, through legislation and/or marketplace demands, to reduce or eliminate antibiotics as growth promotants and even as therapeutics. As explained in this review, adoption of antibiotic-free (ABF) pork production would represent a sea change. By identifying key areas requiring attention, the clear message of this review is that success with ABF production, also referred to as "no antibiotics ever," demands a multifaceted and multidisciplinary approach. Too frequently, the topic has been approached in a piecemeal fashion by considering only one aspect of production, such as the use of certain feed additives or the adjustment in health management. Based on the literature and on practical experience, a more holistic approach is essential. It will require the modification of diet formulations to not only provide essential nutrients and energy, but to also maximize the effectiveness of normal immunological and physiological capabilities that support good health. It must also include the selection of effective non-antibiotic feed additives along with functional ingredients that have been shown to improve the utility and architecture of the gastrointestinal tract, to improve the microbiome, and to support the immune system. This holistic approach will require refining animal management strategies, including selection for more robust genetics, greater focus on care during the particularly sensitive perinatal and post-weaning periods, and practices that minimize social and environmental stressors. A clear strategy is needed to reduce pathogen load in the barn, such as greater emphasis on hygiene and biosecurity, adoption of a strategic vaccine program and the universal adoption of all-in-all-out housing. Of course, overall health management of the herd, as well as the details of animal flows, cannot be ignored. These management areas will support the basic biology of the pig in avoiding or, where necessary, overcoming pathogen challenges without the need for antibiotics, or at least with reduced usage.

Abstract
Since its inception, food additive has been an integral part of the food processing industry with various commercial roles. Besides its advantages, various studies have already highlighted its long-term adverse effects on human health. However, in terms of protein structures and functions, the innate mechanism that triggers these effects has not been elucidated in previously reported studies. Our work takes an in silico approach to delve into structural implications resulting from these additives with three well studied metabolic proteins-lysozyme, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ribonuclease A. Three classes of food additives- synthetic color, preservatives, and phosphate-containing, are taken here to understand their effects on the aforementioned metabolic proteins. Conventional molecular docking and dynamics (MD) studies reveal that these additives induce significant structural perturbations. Among them, carmoisine brings about the most secondary structural changes for lysozyme and ribonuclease A, whereas sodium tripolyphosphate affects BSA the most. To restore the secondary structural loss, we further examine the roles of osmolytes through cross-docking and higher timescale MD simulations. These studies unravel that application of osmolytes like raffinose and trehalose triggers structural restoration for BSA, lysozyme and ribonuclease A, and highlight their roles as co-formulants to alleviate the adverse effects of food additives.

Abstract
Personalized and point-of-care (POC) diagnoses are critical for ocular physiology and disease diagnosis. Real-time monitoring and continuous sampling abilities of tear fluid and user-friendliness have become the key characteristics for the applied ophthalmic techniques. Fluorescence technologies, as one of the most popular methods that can fulfill the requirements of clinical ophthalmic applications for optical sensing, have been raised and applied for tear sensing and diagnostic platforms in recent decades. Wearable sensors in this case have been increasingly developed for ocular diagnosis. Contact lenses, as one of the commercialized and popular tools for ocular dysfunction, have been developed as a platform for fluorescence sensing in tears diagnostics and real-time monitoring. Numbers of biochemical analytes have been examined through developed fluorescent contact lens sensors, including pH values, electrolytes, glucose, and enzymes. These sensors have been proven for monitoring ocular conditions, enhancing and detecting medical treatments, and tracking efficiency of related ophthalmic surgeries at POC settings. This review summarizes the applied ophthalmic fluorescence sensing technologies in tears for ocular diagnosis and monitoring. In addition, the cooperation of fabricated fluorescent sensor with mobile phone readout devices for diagnosing ocular diseases with specific biomarkers continuously is also discussed. Further perspectives for the developments and applications of fluorescent ocular sensing and diagnosing technologies are also provided.

Abstract
Background The gaur (Bos gaurus) is the largest extant wild bovine species, native to South and Southeast Asia, with unique traits, and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Results We report the first gaur reference genome and identify three biological pathways including lysozyme activity, proton transmembrane transporter activity, and oxygen transport with significant changes in gene copy number in gaur compared to other mammals. These may reflect adaptation to challenges related to climate and nutrition. Comparative analyses with domesticated indicine (Bos indicus) and taurine (Bos taurus) cattle revealed genomic signatures of artificial selection, including the expansion of sperm odorant receptor genes in domesticated cattle, which may have important implications for understanding selection for male fertility. Conclusions Apart from aiding dissection of economically important traits, the gaur genome will also provide the foundation to conserve the species. Abstract
Due to its bacteriolytic activity, hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) is widely used in the feed, food, and pharmaceutical industries. However, its application is hindered by low protein expression levels in microbial expression systems. In this work, a novel fusion protein expression strategy was proposed for increasing the expression level of HEWL. First, HEWL, fused with a highly expressed fusion protein partner xylanase XynCDBFV, is expressed in Pichia pastoris. Secondly, a linker including endogenous protease cleavage sites was introduced between two fusion proteins in order to separate them directly during the secretion process. Finally, the results show that the supernatant of XynCDBFV-HEWL has a higher HEWL expression level and activity compared with HEWL only. It should be noted that the expression of HEWL reaches to about 3.5 g/L, and the activity of HEWL against Micrococcus lysodeikticus reaches to 1.50 × 105 U/mL in a fed-batch fermentation, which is currently the highest level of recombinant expression of an egg white-derived lysozyme. Taken together, we acquired bioactive HEWL for large-scale recombinant production in Pichia pastoris using a novel fusion protein expression strategy, which could then be used for a variety of applications.

Abstract
Human lysozyme is a natural non-specific immune protein that participates in the immune response of infants against bacterial and viral infections. Lysozyme is a well-known hydrolase that cleaves peptidoglycan in bacterial cell walls. Several crystal structures of human lysozyme have been reported, but little is known regarding how it recognizes sugar molecules. In this study, the crystal structures of human lysozyme in its native and two N-acetyl-α-d-glucosamine (α-D-NAG)-bound forms were determined at 1.3 Å and 1.55/1.60 Å resolution, respectively. Human lysozyme formed a typical c-type lysozyme fold and the α-D-NAG molecule was bound to the middle of subsites C and D. The N-acetyl and glucosamine groups of α-D-NAG were stabilized by hydrophobic interactions (Val117, Ala126, and Trp127), hydrogen bonds (Asn64, Asn78, Ala126, and Val128), and water bridges. Conformational changes of Arg80, Tyr81, Val128, and Arg131 of human lysozyme were observed due to the interactions of α-D-NAG with the active-site cleft. The binding configuration of α-D-NAG in human lysozyme was distinct compared with that of other sugar-bound lysozymes. Findings from this structural analysis provide a better understanding of the sugar recognition of human lysozyme during the immune response to microbial pathogens.

Abstract
The evolution of drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria remains one of the most urgent threats to public health worldwide. Even worse, the bacterial cells commonly form biofilms through aggregation and adhesion, preventing antibiotic penetration and resisting environmental stress. Moreover, biofilms tend to grow in some hard-to-reach regions, bringing difficulty for antibiotic delivery at the infected site. The drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria and intractable biofilm give rise to chronic and recurrent infections, exacerbating the challenge in combating bacterial infections. Micro/nanorobots (MNRs) are capable of active cargo delivery, targeted treatment with high precision, and motion-assisted mechanical force, which enable transport and enhance penetration of antibacterial agents into the targeted site, thus showing great promise in emerging as an attractive alternative to conventional antibacterial therapies. This review summarizes the recent advances in micro-/nanorobots for antibacterial applications, with emphasis on those novel strategies for drug-resistance bacterium and stubborn biofilm infections. Insights on the future development of MNRs with good functionality and biosafety offer promising approaches to address infections in the clinic setting.

Abstract
Antimicrobials are essential for combating infectious diseases. However, an increase in resistance to them is a major cause of concern. The empirical use of drugs in managing COVID-19 and the associated secondary infections have further exacerbated the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Hence, the situation mandates exploring and developing efficient alternatives for the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections in patients suffering from COVID-19 or other viral infections. In this review, we have described the alternatives to conventional antimicrobials that have shown promising results and are at various stages of development. An acceleration of efforts to investigate their potential as therapeutics can provide more treatment options for clinical management of drug-resistant secondary bacterial and fungal infections in the current pandemic and similar potential outbreaks in the future. The alternatives include bacteriophages and their lytic enzymes, anti-fungal enzymes, antimicrobial peptides, nanoparticles and small molecule inhibitors among others. What is required at this stage is to critically examine the challenges in developing the listed compounds and biomolecules as therapeutics and to establish guidelines for their safe and effective application within a suitable time frame. In this review, we have attempted to highlight the importance of rational use of antimicrobials in patients suffering from COVID-19 and boost the deployment of alternative therapeutics.

Abstract
Cells use droplet-like membrane-less organelles (MLOs) to compartmentalize and selectively take-up molecules, such as proteins, from their internal environment. These membraneless organelles can be mimicked by polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) consisting of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. Previous research has demonstrated that protein uptake strongly depends on the PEC composition. This suggests that PECs can be used to selectively extract proteins from a multi-protein mixture. With this in mind, the partitioning of the protein lysozyme in four PEC systems consisting of different weak and strong polyelectrolyte combinations is investigated. All systems show similar trends in lysozyme partitioning as a function of the complex composition. The release of lysozyme from complexes at their optimal lysozyme uptake composition is investigated by increasing the salt concentration to 500 mm NaCl or lowering the pH from 7 to 4. Complexes of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and poly(acrylic acid) have the best uptake and release properties. These are used for selective extraction of lysozyme from a hen-egg white protein matrix. The (back)-extracted lysozyme retains its enzymatic activity, showing the capability of PECs to function as extraction media for proteins.

Abstract
We investigated the three probiotic bacteria and a processed yeast (GroPro-Aqua) as the replacers of antibiotics in juvenile olive flounder. A total of seven diets were used, that is, one basal or control (CON) diet; and six other diets, of which, three diets were prepared by supplementing probiotic bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis WB60 (BSWB60) at 1 × 108 CFU/g diet, Bacillus subtilis SJ10 (BSSJ10) at 1 × 108 CFU/g diet, and Enterococcus faecium SH30 (EFSH30) at 1 × 107 CFU/g diet; one diet with processed yeast (GRO) at 0.35% diet; and two other diets were supplemented with oxytetracycline (OTC) and amoxicillin (AMO) at 4 g/kg of each. Triplicate groups of fish (average 12.1 g) were fed one of the diets for eight weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the fish that were fed the probiotic bacteria-supplemented diets had a significantly higher final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate compared to the CON, OTC, and AMO diets. Fish that were fed the GRO diet had significantly higher feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios than those of the fish that were fed the CON diet. Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glucose, and total protein were not affected by the diets. Lysozyme activity in fish that were fed the BSSJ10, BSWB60, and EFSH30 diets were significantly higher compared to the CON and OTC diets, whereas myeloperoxidase activity of fish fed the BSWB60 and EFSH30 diets were significantly higher than those of fish fed the CON and AMO diets. Flounder growth hormone gene expressions of fish that were fed BSWB60 and GRO diets were significantly higher compared to the CON, OTC, and AMO diets. The interleukin-1β gene expression of fish that were fed the BSSJ10, BSWB60, EFSH30, OTC, and GRO diets was significantly higher than those of fish fed the CON diet. The interleukin-10 gene expression of fish that were fed the BSSJ10, EFSH30, and GRO diets was significantly higher than those of fish fed the CON and AMO diets. Posterior intestinal histology of fish showed significantly higher villi length in fish that were fed the BSSJ10, BSWB60, EFSH30, and GRO diets compared to the CON diet. After 15 days of challenge test with pathogenic bacteria Edwardsiella tarda, the cumulative survival rate of fish that were fed the BSSJ10, BSWB60, EFSH30, and GRO diets were significantly higher than those of fish that were fed the CON diet. Overall, the results indicate that dietary supplementation of B. subtilis (108 CFU/g diet), E. faecium (107 CFU/g diet), and processed yeast (GroPro-Aqua at 0.35% diet) could replace the antibiotics in terms of improving growth, immunity, gut health, and disease resistance in juvenile olive flounder.

Abstract
Lysozymes are naturally occurring enzymes present in a variety of biological organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and animal bodily secretions and tissues. It is also the main ingredient of many ethnomedicines. It is well known that lysozymes and lysozyme-like enzymes can be used as anti-bacterial agents by degrading bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan that leads to cell death, and can also inhibit fungi, yeasts, and viruses. In addition to its direct antimicrobial activity, lysozyme is also an important component of the innate immune system in most mammals. Increasing evidence has shown the immune-modulatory effects of lysozymes against infection and inflammation. More recently, studies have revealed the anti-cancer activities of lysozyme in multiple types of tumors, potentially through its immune-modulatory activities. In this review, we summarized the major functions and underlying mechanisms of lysozymes derived from animal and plant sources. We highlighted the therapeutic applications and recent advances of lysozymes in cancers, hypertension, and viral diseases, aiming toseeking alternative therapies for standard medical treatment bypassing side effects. We also evaluated the role of lysozyme as a promising cancer marker for prognosis to indicate the outcomes recurrence for patients.

Abstract
Lysozyme is a ~14 kDa protein present in many mucosal secretions (tears, saliva, and mucus) and tissues of animals and plants, and plays an important role in the innate immunity, providing protection against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Three main different types of lysozymes are known: the c-type (chicken or conventional type), the g-type (goose type), and the i-type (invertebrate type). It has long been the subject of several applications due to its antimicrobial properties. The problem of antibiotic resistance has stimulated the search for new molecules or new applications of known compounds. The use of lysozyme as an alternative antibiotic is the subject of this review, which covers the results published over the past two decades. This review is focused on the applications of lysozyme in medicine, (the treatment of infectious diseases, wound healing, and anti-biofilm), veterinary, feed, food preservation, and crop protection. It is available from a wide range of sources, in addition to the well-known chicken egg white, and its synergism with other compounds, endowed with antimicrobial activity, are also summarized. An overview of the modified lysozyme applications is provided in the form of tables.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, we have witnessed a surge around the world in the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This global health threat arose mainly due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics as well as a relative lack of new drug classes in development pipelines. Innovative antibacterial therapeutics and strategies are, therefore, in grave need. For the last twenty years, antimicrobial enzymes encoded by bacteriophages, viruses that can lyse and kill bacteria, have gained tremendous interest. There are two classes of these phage-derived enzymes, referred to also as enzybiotics: peptidoglycan hydrolases (lysins), which degrade the bacterial peptidoglycan layer, and polysaccharide depolymerases, which target extracellular or surface polysaccharides, i.e., bacterial capsules, slime layers, biofilm matrix, or lipopolysaccharides. Their features include distinctive modes of action, high efficiency, pathogen specificity, diversity in structure and activity, low possibility of bacterial resistance development, and no observed cross-resistance with currently used antibiotics. Additionally, and unlike antibiotics, enzybiotics can target metabolically inactive persister cells. These phage-derived enzymes have been tested in various animal models to combat both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and in recent years peptidoglycan hydrolases have entered clinical trials. Here, we review the testing and clinical use of these enzymes.

Abstract
The general characteristics of the effect of surfactants on the activity of lysozyme were demonstrated. The kinetics of bacterial cell lysis is consistent with the Michaelis-Menten equation and the presence of surfactants does not shift the pH-optimum of activity. Surfactants do not change the Km value but instead, affect the Vmax value. The experimental dependencies are well described by theoretical equations, which assume three surfactant binding sites on the lysozyme molecule. The dependencies of the activity of lysozyme on the surfactant concentration are either a step type (i.e., a higher plateau becomes a lower plateau), or a dependency with a maximum and continuation of the curve in the form of a plateau but with an increase in the surfactant concentration. It can be assumed that there is a mechanism for the regulation of lysozyme activity by an unknown natural factor that has a suitable hydrophobic radical capable of binding to the surface of lysozyme.

Abstract
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a multidrug-resistant bacterium with no precise clinical treatment. This bacterium can be a vital cause for death and different organ failures in immune-compromised, immune-competent, and long-time hospitalized patients. Extensive quorum sensing capability has become a challenge to develop new drugs against this pathogen. Moreover, the organism possesses about 789 proteins which function, structure, and pathogenesis remain obscured. In this piece of work, we tried to enlighten the aforementioned sectors using highly reliable bioinformatics tools validated by the scientific community. At first, the whole proteome sequence of the organism was retrieved and stored. Then we separated the hypothetical proteins and searched for the conserved domain with a high confidence level and multi-server validation, which resulted in 24 such proteins. Furthermore, all of their physical and chemical characterizations were performed, such as theoretical isoelectric point, molecular weight, GRAVY value, and many more. Besides, the subcellular localization, protein-protein interactions, functional motifs, 3D structures, antigenicity, and virulence factors were also evaluated. As an extension of this work, 'RTFAMSSER' and 'PAAPQPSAS' were predicted as potential T and B cell epitopes, respectively. We hope our findings will help in better understating the pathogenesis and smoothen the way to the cure.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a complex, creamy secretion produced by the glands of worker bees. Due to its health-promoting properties, it is used by humans as a dietary supplement. However, RJ compounds are not fully characterized yet. Hence, in this research, we aimed to broaden the knowledge of the proteomic composition of fresh RJ. Water extracts of the samples were pre-treated using combinatorial hexapeptide ligand libraries (ProteoMinerTM kit), trypsin-digested, and analyzed by a nanoLC-MALDI-TOF/TOF MS system. To check the ProteoMinerTM performance in the MS-based protein identification, we also examined RJ extracts that were not prepared with the ProteoMinerTM kit. We identified a total of 86 proteins taxonomically classified to Apis spp. (bees). Among them, 74 proteins were detected in RJ extracts pre-treated with ProteoMinerTM kit, and only 50 proteins were found in extracts non-enriched with this technique. Ten of the identified features were hypothetical proteins whose existence has been predicted, but any experimental evidence proves their in vivo expression. Additionally, we detected four uncharacterized proteins of unknown functions. The results of this research indicate that the ProteoMinerTM strategy improves proteomic identification in complex biological samples. Broadening the knowledge of RJ composition may contribute to the development of standards and regulations, enhancing the quality of RJ, and consequently, the safety of its supplementation.

Abstract
This study evaluates peptidoglycan hydrolysis by a microbial muramidase from the
fungus Acremonium alcalophilum in vitro and in the
gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. Peptidoglycan used for in
vitro studies was derived from 5 gram-positive chicken gut isolate
type strains. In vitro peptidoglycan hydrolysis was studied by
three approaches: (a) helium ion microscopy to identify visual phenotypes of
hydrolysis, (b) reducing end assay to quantify solubilization of peptidoglycan
fragments, and (c) mass spectroscopy to estimate relative abundances of soluble
substrates and reaction products. Visual effects of peptidoglycan hydrolysis
could be observed by helium ion microscopy and the increase in abundance of
soluble peptidoglycan due to hydrolysis was quantified by a reducing end assay.
Mass spectroscopy confirmed the release of hydrolysis products and identified
muropeptides from the five different peptidoglycan sources. Peptidoglycan
hydrolysis in chicken crop, jejunum, and caecum samples was measured by
quantifying the total and soluble muramic acid content. A significant increase
in the proportion of the soluble muramic acid was observed in all three segments
upon inclusion of the microbial muramidase in the diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ability of a high level of dietary Arthrospira platensis, individually or in combination with two exogenous carbohydrate-degrading enzymes (lysozyme and Rovabio®), to improve systemic antioxidant potential and hepatic lipid metabolism was tested in piglets. Forty male post-weaned piglets, sons of Large White × Landrace sows crossed with Pietrain boars, were allocated into 4 groups (n = 10) and fed during 28 days one of the following diets: 1) a control basal diet (cereal and soybean meal); 2) a basal diet with 10% of A. platensis (AP); 3) the AP diet supplemented with 0.005% of Rovabio® (AP + R); 4) the AP diet supplemented with 0.01% of lysozyme (AP + L). RESULTS Arthrospira platensis decreased BW gain of piglets, regardless the addition of feed enzymes. The majority of plasma metabolites were affected by diets. A. platensis increased total lipids, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, without changing hepatic fatty acid content or modulating, in an expressive manner, the transcriptional profile of lipid sensitive mediators. The antioxidant potential in general, and total carotenoids in particular, were improved by the microalga, regardless lysozyme or Rovabio®. CONCLUSIONS Summing up, A. platensis, individually and combined with feed enzymes, impacts negatively on piglets' growth but improves the systemic antioxidant potential and changes plasma lipids with a minor modulation on related hepatic metabolic pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate relationships between infant body composition (BC) and human milk (HM) immunomodulatory proteins (IMPs) during the first 12 months of lactation. METHODS BC of breastfeeding dyads (n = 20) was measured with ultrasound skinfolds (infants) and bioimpedance spectroscopy (infants/mothers) at 2, 5, 9, and/or 12 months post partum. Breastfeeding frequency, 24-h milk intake, and IMP concentrations (lactoferrin, lysozyme, secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA)) were measured, and calculated daily intakes (CDIs) were determined. We used linear regression/mixed-effects models and adjusted results for multiple comparisons. RESULTS No associations were seen between maternal characteristics and IMP concentrations/CDIs or between IMP concentrations and infant BC. Lactoferrin CDI was negatively associated with infant fat-free mass index (P = 0.002); lysozyme CDI was positively associated with infant fat mass (P = 0.004) and fat mass index (P = 0.004) measured with ultrasound skinfolds. CONCLUSION In this small cohort of infants breastfed on demand during first year of life, we report differential associations of HM IMPs with infant BC, showing that in addition to their critical role in shaping infant immunity, lactoferrin, and lysozyme also influence development of infant BC, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for 12 months and beyond. IMPACT HM IMPs (concentrations and, most importantly, daily intakes) time-dependently and differentially associate with development of infant lean mass and adiposity during first 12 months of lactation. There is no information on how intakes and concentrations of these components affect development of infant BC. HM contains IMPs-lactoferrin, lysozyme, and sIgA, which not only play a critical role in shaping infant's immunity, but also influence infant growth and development of BC, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for 12 months and beyond and warranting careful consideration of the dose effects of supplemented formula.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Farrowing induction with prostaglandin F2 analogue cloprostenol is commonly used on commercial farms to manage the timing of farrowing. When labour induction is applied, the questions arise about possible side effects of such a hormonal intervention on physiological processes connected with labour and lactation, including colostral immunity. RESULTS In this study, immune cells composition, lysozyme concentration, complement bacteriolytic activity and proinflamatory (GM-CSF2, IL-1β, IL-6, a TNFα) and anti-inflammatory (IL-4, IL-10, TGFβ1 a TGFβ2) cytokines were measured in colostrum samples from sows farrowing naturally (NP) and from sows with farrowing induced using cloprostenol administration on day 113 of gestation (IP). A significantly higher proportion of lymphocytes was found in colostrum of induced sows compared to colostrum of non-induced sows. No significant differences between NP and IP were found in complement activity, in the proportions of granulocytes, macrophages and lymphocyte subpopulations. Lower lysozyme concentration and higher IL-1β, IL-6, TGFβ1 and TNFα concentrations were found in IP sow colostrum compared to colostrum from NP sows. CONCLUSIONS An increased proportion of colostral lymphocytes can positively influence the cellular immunity transmission from sow to her offspring. On the other hand, a lower lysozyme concentration can adversely affect newborn's intestinal immunity, as well as changes in cytokine concentrations can have an adverse effect on newborn piglet intestinal epithelium development and its defence function.

Abstract
Food-borne viruses and contaminants, as an important global food safety problem, are caused by chemical, microbiological, zoonotic, and other risk factors that represent a health hazard. Natural bioactive substances, originating from plants, animals, or microorganisms, might offer the possibility of preventing and controlling food-borne diseases. In this contribution, the common bioactive substances such as polyphenols, essential oils, proteins, and polysaccharides which are effective in the prevention and treatment of food-borne viruses and contaminants are discussed. Meanwhile, the preventive effects of natural bioactive substances and the possible mechanisms involved in food protection are discussed and detailed. The application and potential effects of natural bioactive substances in the adjuvant treatment for food-borne diseases is also described.

Abstract
Muramidases constitute a superfamily of enzymes that hydrolyse peptidoglycan (PGN) from bacterial cell walls. Recently, a fungal muramidase derived from Acremonium alcalophilum has been shown to increase broiler performance when added as a feed additive. However, the underlying mechanisms of action are not yet identified. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that this muramidase can cleave PGN to muramyl dipeptide (MDP), activating nucleotide-binding oligomerisation domain-containing protein 2 (NOD2) receptors in eukaryotic cells, potentially inducing anti-inflammatory host responses. Using Micrococcus luteus as a test bacterium, it was shown that muramidase from A. alcalophilum did not display antimicrobial activity, while it could cleave fluorescently labelled PGN. It was shown that the muramidase could degrade PGN down to its minimal bioactive structure MDP by using UPLC-MS/MS. Using HEK-Blue™-hNOD2 reporter cells, it was shown that the muramidase-treated PGN degradation mixture could activate NOD2. Muramidase supplementation to broiler feed increased the duodenal goblet cell and intraepithelial lymphocyte abundance while reducing duodenal wall CD3+ T lymphocyte levels. Muramidase supplementation to broiler feed only had moderate effects on the duodenal, ileal and caecal microbiome. It was shown that the newly discovered muramidase hydrolysed PGN, resulting in MDP that activates NOD2, potentially steering the host response for improved intestinal health.
