Abstract
OBJECTIVES This nationwide cohort study investigated the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and various types of urticarial diseases. METHODS We conducted a population-based cohort study using data from Leumit Health Services (LHS), a health maintenance organisation in Israel. The study population consisted of all members of LHS between 1 January 2002 and 30 November 2022 aged 5-18 years. Diagnoses of ADHD and urticarial diseases were based on International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition codes. The study group consisted of subjects with ADHD, while matched controls were randomly selected non-ADHD subjects (2:1 ratio). FINDINGS Demographic characteristics of ADHD (n=18 558) and control (n=37 116) groups were well-matched, with no significant socio-demographic differences. A significantly higher prevalence of various subtypes of urticarial diseases was found in the ADHD group compared with the control group. Specifically, urticaria (5.00% vs 4.22%, OR (95% CI) 1.19 (1.10 to 1.30), p<0.001), allergic urticaria (3.26% vs 2.73%, OR (95% CI) 1.20 (1.08 to 1.33), p<0.001). Inducible forms of urticaria did not show significant differences between the groups. The ADHD group had a higher use of systemic and topical antihistamines and systemic corticosteroids. CONCLUSIONS Various urticarial diseases are more prevalent in individuals with ADHD, possibly due to shared genetic factors, immune system dysfunction, or environmental triggers. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS This study suggests an association between ADHD and some urticaria subtypes. Physicians should be aware of this association and its public health implications.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental syndrome typically diagnosed in childhood that may persist into adulthood. Its etiology encompasses both genetic and environmental factors, with genetic studies indicating catecholamine dysfunction and epidemiological evidence emphasizing neuroinflammation as a potential trigger. To investigate the roles of inflammation and development processes in ADHD, we conducted a longitudinal behavioral study using female Swiss mice with a dopamine deficit model. We explored the impact of neonatal dopaminergic lesions, treatment with abscisic acid (ABA)-an anti-inflammatory hormone-and developmental changes by comparing behavioral patterns in juvenile and adult mice. Postmortem analyses assessed neuroinflammation through microglial morphology, NLRP3, cytokine expression, and the excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) ratio in specific brain regions. Neonatal dopaminergic lesions induced hyperactivity and hypersensitivity in juvenile mice that persisted into adulthood. In adults, increased social interaction and memory impairment were observed in lesioned mice. Brain development mitigated impulsivity, while ABA treatment reduced locomotor activity, downregulated pain sensitivity, and influenced social interaction, although it did not completely resolve cognitive deficits in lesioned adult mice. In brain regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), posterior insular cortex (pIC), and hippocampus, lesions significantly altered microglial morphology. In the ACC, lesions increased IL-1β and TNFα levels, decreased Arg1 mRNA levels, and disrupted the E/I balance. Importantly, ABA treatment restored microglial morphology, normalized IL-1β and Arg1 expression and upregulated vGAT levels. This study demonstrates that dopamine deficits lead to microglia alterations and E/I imbalance, contributing to ADHD symptoms. While some symptoms improve with brain development, targeting microglial health in specific brain regions emerges as a promising therapeutic approach for managing ADHD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In recent years, personalized treatments and factors affecting treatment response have gained importance in psychiatry. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of perceived stress, childhood trauma, and resilience levels on response to treatment in anxiety disorders (AD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescents. METHOD A total of 202 adolescents were included in this study. The treatment response of patients with AD and ADHD who were diagnosed according to DSM-5 criteria and used pharmacological treatment was determined by using the Clinical Global Impression- Improvement scale in their control examinations. Forty patients with AD who responded to treatment (AD/Responder), 35 patients who did not respond (AD/Non-responder), 55 treatment responder patients with ADHD (ADHD/Responder), and 21 non-responder patients (ADHD/Non-responder), and 51 healthy controls (HC) were included in the study. They completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Childhood and Youth Resilience Measure-12 (CYRM-12), and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). RESULTS The PSS score was found to be significantly lower in the ADHD/Responder group compared to AD/Responder and ADHD/Non-responder groups. The PSS score was lower, and CYRM-12 score was significantly higher in the ADHD/Responder and HC groups compared to the AD/Non-responder group. Emotional abuse scores, a subscale of CTQ, were considerably higher in the AD/Non-responder group compared to AD/Responder and ADHD/Responder. There were significant positive correlations between PSS and CTQ and its subscale scores; negative correlations were found between CYRM-12 and CTQ scores and CYRM-12 and PSS scores in groups. CONCLUSIONS There were considerable relationships between treatment response and resilience, perceived stress and emotional abuse in adolescents with AD and ADHD. In addition to drug treatments, resilience and stress-based interventions can be used to increase treatment response especially in AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotion dysregulation (ED) is a key transdiagnostic symptom in several psychiatric disorders such as borderline personality disorder (BPD), bipolar disorder (BD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These disorders, here defined as ED disorders (EDD), share similarities in symptoms, comorbidity, and heritability, emphasizing the importance of a transdiagnostic approach to identify markers of vulnerability to EDD in high-risk populations, such as EDD patients' offspring (EDDoff). The hippocampus, central to ED, exhibits alterations across EDD. METHODS We employed a state-of-the-art approach (micro-co-activation patterns, μCAPs) to study the transdiagnostic dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) of hippocampal subregions from resting-state functional MRI of 201 participants (74 EDD patients, 57 EDDoff, 70 controls). μCAPs provide a data-driven differentiation within the seed region. RESULTS DFC between the sensorimotor network (SMN) and the hippocampal body was lower in EDD patients (pFDR=0.0002) and EDDoff (pFDR=0.01) compared to controls, with EDDoff displaying an intermediate pattern between EDD patients and controls. dFC between the limbic network (LN) and the hippocampal head was higher in EDD patients than in controls (pFDR=0.01) and in EDDoff (pFDR=0.01). A negative correlation was found between ED and SMN (pFDR=0.01), suggesting increasing ED with decreasing SMN dFC with the hippocampus. CONCLUSIONS Increased dFC between the hippocampal head and the LN, at the expense of the SMN, may represent a marker of disease in EDD patients. Lower dFC between the SMN and the hippocampal body may represent a marker of vulnerability to EDD in EDDoff, correlating with ED. Such a transdiagnostic construct represents a clinically relevant target for early interventions aimed at reducing vulnerability to EDD in high-risk populations.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that often persists into adulthood and is accompanied by comorbid mental health problems. This cross-sectional cohort study analyzed 411 18-year-olds from the Danish COPSAC2000 birth cohort to investigate the relationship between the gut microbiome, fasting and postprandial systemic inflammation, ADHD symptoms, and symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression. ADHD was assessed using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), while depression, stress, and anxiety were evaluated with the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21). Fecal metagenomic data and inflammation levels, measured as glycosylated protein A (GlycA), were analyzed following a standardized meal challenge. In males, higher ADHD symptom scores correlated significantly with increased abundance of a tryptophan biosynthesis pathway (MetaCyc Metabolic Pathways Database) and elevated fasting and postprandial GlycA levels (p < 0.05). While the severity of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms showed weak associations with GlycA and the gut microbiome, our findings indicate a significant link between ADHD symptoms and postprandial inflammation, warranting further investigation into underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
There is mounting evidence for the involvement of the immune system, neuroinflammation and disturbed gut microbiota, or dysbiosis, in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Gut dysbiosis is strongly implicated in many physical, autoimmune, neurological, and neuropsychiatric conditions, however knowledge of its particular pathogenic role in ADHD is sparse. As such, this narrative review examines and synthesizes the available evidence related to inflammation, dysbiosis, and neural processes in ADHD. Minimal differences in microbiota diversity measures between cases and controls were found, however many relative abundance differences were observed at all classification levels (phylum to strain). Compositional differences of taxa important to key gut-brain axis pathways, in particular Bacteroides species and Faecalibacterium, may contribute to inflammation, brain functioning differences, and symptoms, in ADHD. We have identified one possible model of ADHD etiopathogenesis involving systemic inflammation, an impaired blood-brain barrier, and neural disturbances as downstream consequences of gut dysbiosis. Nevertheless, studies conducted to date have varied degrees of methodological rigour and involve diverse participant characteristics and analytical techniques, highlighting a need for additional research.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine associations between identifying as transgender and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in US early adolescents. METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (Year 3, 2019-2021) to estimate associations between gender identity and ADHD symptoms using the Child Behavior Checklist Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-oriented attention problem scale scores, adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, parent education, household income, and study site. Additional models adjusted for stress problems and depression symptoms. Multiple linear regression analyses estimated the association between gender identity and ADHD symptoms. RESULTS In a sample of 10,277 adolescents, mostly 12-13-year-olds, 1.0% self-identified as transgender and 1.1% self-identified as gender-questioning. Self-reported transgender status (B = 3.41; 95% confidence interval = 0.79-6.04; p = .011) and gender-questioning status (B = 2.72; 95% confidence interval = 0.79-4.65; p = .006) were both associated with higher ADHD symptom scores when compared to cisgender peers after adjusting for sociodemographic variables. In models adjusting for stress problems and depression as well as sociodemographic variables, the associations between transgender and gender-questioning status and ADHD symptoms were attenuated and no longer statistically significant. DISCUSSION Our results indicate that gender minority status may be linked to higher ADHD symptom scores, potentially due to higher minority stress.

Abstract
Background /Objectives Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental condition, and symptoms persist into adulthood. Its etiology, though recognized as multifactorial, is still under discussion. Metabolomics helps us to identify pathways associated with functional and structural changes that may be related to symptomatology. This study aimed to characterize potentially altered metabolic pathways and associated biochemical reactions in ADHD. Methods: A scoping review of experimental research was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using PRISMA ScR. Fifty-five studies were eligible for data extraction, of which fifteen met the criteria for inclusion in the review. Subsequently, the identified metabolites were analyzed in the context of the literature to recognize possible discordant pathways in the disorder. Results: Two groups of relevant neuromodulators of ADHD were found: precursors of monoamines and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The literature was reviewed to discover potential implicated pathways and new metabolites of interest. Conclusions: The study of ADHD biomarkers should focus on measuring precursor, intermediate, and final metabolites of polyunsaturated fatty acids and monoamines in panels or through untargeted analysis to improve the understanding of the pathology and individualization of treatments.

Abstract
Introduction Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently exists alongside psychiatric comorbidities. The coexistence of somatic diseases and ADHD constitutes a growing field of research. Method This study aimed to examine the prevalence of common somatic diseases in adolescents with ADHD and compare them with those in adolescents without any psychiatric diagnoses. A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenient sample of Swedish upper secondary school students aged 15 to 19 years. Data were collected using an electronic version of the "Mental and Somatic Health without borders" survey. In 2020, 1608 adolescents completed the survey and provided self-reports of their psychiatric and somatic diagnoses. Results Among the sample of Swedish adolescents, 5.5% reported having ADHD diagnoses. These adolescents reported more somatic comorbidities than those without any psychiatric diagnosis (comparison group). The most common somatic comorbidities among those with ADHD were allergies (43.4%), asthma (24.7%), and skin diseases (16.7%), which prevalences were significantly higher than those reported by adolescents in the comparison group. However the effect sizes of these differences were negligible (allergies: p=0.002, Cramer's V=0.08; asthma: p=0.041, Cramer's V=0.06; skin diseases: p=0.007, Cramer's V=0.08), raising questions about the practical implications of these findings. Allergies were significantly more common in both genders with ADHD (p=0.038, Cramer's V=0.08 in women and p=0.038, Cramer's V=0.09 in men). Additionally, men with ADHD showed a significant association with skin diseases (p=0.007, Cramer's V=0.12) while women with ADHD were significantly more likely to have migraine (p=0.038, Cramer's V=0.08). Notably, adolescents with ADHD reported significantly higher rates of uncertainty regarding the existence of diabetes, rheumatoid diseases, asthma (with negligible effect sizes), and thyroid diseases (with a small effect size) than those without any psychiatric diagnoses, suggesting heightened health related anxiety within this group. Conclusions Adolescents with ADHD reported more somatic comorbidities and greater uncertainty about the potential presence of additional somatic conditions compared to adolescents without psychiatric diagnoses. These findings highlight the importance of addressing both health literacy and access to healthcare. By focusing on this group, we cannot only improve their ability to understand and navigate the healthcare system but also strengthen their confidence in managing their own health.

Abstract
This retrospective cohort study identifies differences between rates of selected mental illnesses and sleep disorders according to eight gynecological problems. Analyses utilize medical claims data for adult employees of a large corporation during 2017-2021. Women with a gynecological problem (most notably pain, endometriosis, pelvic inflammation and bleeding) are significantly more likely to experience mental illness. Several gynecological problems are also significantly associated with sleep disorders. Women with a gynecological problem (vs. none) are 50% more likely to have a mental health problem and 44% more likely to have a sleep disorder after adjusting for age, marital status, dependent children and year. The largest differences between higher (%) mental illness and sleep disorders appear for hyperplasia (6% vs. 45%), cancer (11% vs. 68%), pelvic inflammation (46% vs. 79%) and pain (79% vs. 43%), respectively. On the other hand, the rate of having one or more gynecological problems ranges from 7.1% for women with no mental illness or sleep disorder to 20.6% for women with schizophrenia. Understanding the association between gynecological problems, mental illness and sleep disorders can help clinicians more effectively identify and treat patients.

Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences have been associated with many neurodevelopmental and affective disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, with more exposures increasing negative risk. Sex and genetic background are biological variables involved in adverse psychiatric outcomes due to early life trauma. Females in general have an increased prevalence of stress-related psychopathologies beginning after adolescence, indicative of adolescence being a female-specific sensitive period. To understand the underlying neuronal mechanisms potentially responsible for this relationship between genetic background, sex, stress/trauma, and cognitive/affective behaviors, we assessed behavioral and neuronal changes in a novel animal model of early life stress exposure. Male and female BALB/cJ mice that express elevated basal anxiety-like behaviors and differences in monoamine signaling-associated genes, were exposed to an early life variable stress protocol that combined deprivation in early life with unpredictability in adolescence. Stress exposure produced hyperlocomotion and attention deficits (5-choice serial reaction time task) in male and female mice along with female-specific increased anxiety-like behavior. These behavioral changes were paralleled by reduced excitability of locus coeruleus (LC) neurons, due to resting membrane potential hyperpolarization in males and a female-specific increase in action potential delay time. These data describe a novel interaction between sex, genetic background, and early life stress that results in behavioral changes in clinically relevant domains and potential underlying mechanistic lasting changes in physiological properties of neurons in the LC.

Abstract
Mental health disorders are associated with decreased quality of life, economic productivity loss, and increased mortality. The association between stressful experiences and psychopathology is well documented. However, studies are needed to understand the impact of timing of stressful events, types of traumatic experiences, and of family resilience on internalizing and externalizing symptoms in early childhood. The present study used a longitudinal design towards this end. Parents (N = 456) completed study measures at infancy, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, and 7 years. At 3 years, greater stressful events during the prenatal period, 1-2 years, and 2-3 years (B = 0.833-0.369, p = 0.028-0.046) predicted internalizing symptoms for female participants only. For externalizing symptoms at 3 years, every time point assessed was significantly associated with more symptoms across both sexes (B = 1.071-0.414, p < 0.001). At 5 years, both internalizing and externalizing symptoms were associated with a greater number of stressful events at every time point and across sexes (B = 1.372-0.465, p < 0.001-0.002). There was evidence for timing effects, including cumulative effects, sensitive periods, and recency effects. Exposure to interpersonal trauma associated with greater internalizing symptoms (B = 2.120, p = 0.002), whereas both interpersonal (B = 1.879, p = 0.005) and non-interpersonal (B = 1.223, p = 0.032) traumatic experiences were associated with greater externalizing symptoms. Aspects of family resilience including higher levels of family commitment, ability to face challenges, and sense of control reduced risk for internalizing symptoms (B = -0.496, p = 0.004) while only greater sense of control (B = -0.838, p = 0.040) reduced risk for externalizing symptoms at age 7 years, including in the context of trauma.

Abstract
AIMS Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health burden, more prevalent among individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to the general population. To extend the knowledge base on how ADHD links to T2D, this study aimed to estimate causal effects of ADHD on T2D and to explore mediating pathways. METHODS We applied a two-step, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design, using single nucleotide polymorphisms to genetically predict ADHD and a range of potential mediators. First, a wide range of univariable MR methods was used to investigate associations between genetically predicted ADHD and T2D, and between ADHD and the purported mediators: body mass index (BMI), childhood obesity, childhood BMI, sedentary behaviour (daily hours of TV watching), blood pressure (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure), C-reactive protein and educational attainment (EA). A mixture-of-experts method was then applied to select the MR method most likely to return a reliable estimate. We used estimates derived from multivariable MR to estimate indirect effects of ADHD on T2D through mediators. RESULTS Genetically predicted ADHD liability associated with 10% higher odds of T2D (OR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.18). From nine purported mediators studied, three showed significant individual mediation effects: EA (39.44% mediation; 95% CI: 29.00%, 49.73%), BMI (44.23% mediation; 95% CI: 34.34%, 52.03%) and TV watching (44.10% mediation; 95% CI: 30.76%, 57.80%). The combination of BMI and EA explained the largest mediating effect (53.31%, 95% CI: -1.99%, 110.38%) of the ADHD-T2D association. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest a potentially causal, positive relationship between ADHD liability and T2D, with mediation through higher BMI, more TV watching and lower EA. Intervention on these factors may thus have beneficial effects on T2D risk in individuals with ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The complex association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and methylphenidate (MPH) with precocious puberty (PP) is still unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between ADHD, MPH, and PP. METHODS This is a nationwide cohort study including a total of 3,342,077 individuals, 186,681 with ADHD and 3,155,396 without. First, we compared the risk of PP between ADHD cases and non-ADHD cases. Second, we compared the risk of PP between MPH users and non-MPH users in patients with ADHD. RESULTS Patients with ADHD were at a greater risk of PP (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 2.01 [95% CI, 1.91-2.11]). In our moderation analyses, the female gender was a positive additive effect modifier of the association between ADHD and PP, whereas tics and intellectual disability were negative effect modifiers. In patients with ADHD, MPH users had a significantly lower risk of PP (aHR, 0.63 [95% CI 0.57-0.70]), and females had a negative effect modification on the association between MPH and PP. CONCLUSIONS Our study found that children with ADHD were at a greater risk of PP. Girls with ADHD were a group particularly vulnerable to PP. Comorbid tics or intellectual disability was associated with a lower risk of PP. Among patients with ADHD, MPH was protective against PP, especially in girls. However, these preliminary results need further validation due to the nature of them being from an electronic database study. Unmeasured confounding factors might affect the association between MPH and PP.

Depression and anxiety are pervasive mental health issues, affecting millions globally and often accompanied by cognitive impairments with significant repercussions in daily life and professions, particularly in safety-critical roles like community-living pilots. This exploration assesses Neurocognitive Remediation Therapy (NRT) as an innovative solution for addressing cognitive deficits linked to depression and anxiety in these pilots. Theoretical underpinnings of NRT draw from cognitive rehabilitation, neuropsychology, and neuroplasticity principles. Depression and anxiety often manifest as cognitive deficits, impacting attention, memory, executive functions, and decision-making. NRT interventions aim to address these impairments by enhancing cognitive flexibility, attentional control, and memory through training exercises and cognitive restructuring, empowering individuals to regain cognitive functionality and adaptability. Empirical evidence supports NRT's efficacy in enhancing cognitive functioning, showing significant improvements in attention, memory, and executive functions. This review focuses on NRT's potential to improve cognition in community pilots, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing cognitive deficits and enhancing job performance, even in high-pressure environments like aviation. The practical implications of NRT for pilots are profound. Tailored programs can address specific cognitive challenges, such as maintaining vigilance and decision-making under stress. Integrating NRT into training regimens enhances skill sets and mental resilience, contributing to safety and success. Additionally, NRT positively impacts emotional well-being, reducing stress and improving overall quality of life. In Conclusion, NRT emerges as a promising intervention for enhancing cognitive functioning in community-living pilots with depression and anxiety. Evidence suggests its potential to improve performance, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. Further research and implementation are crucial to fully realize its benefits and ensure pilots' safety and success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current research suggests that people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at higher risk of physical and mental health disorders. This study aimed to explore these health risks in ADHD from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. METHODS This study forms part of the 'Managing young people with ADHD in Primary care (MAP) study'. A survey developed by the study team was distributed to over 16 year olds with ADHD, their supporters, primary healthcare professionals and health commissioners across England, via social media and through patient/clinical networks (September-October 2022). This survey contained two questions on health risks. Question one asked about views on health risks in ADHD (free text). Question two asked about advice given (options list and free text). Descriptive statistics summarised responses to questions one and two, and qualitative analysis (reflexive thematic analysis) was used to explore free text responses from question one. RESULTS 782 participants responded to the MAP survey. Of these, 206 healthcare professionals, 157 people with ADHD and 88 supporters answered question one. The most mentioned perceived risks were substance misuse, sleep disorders, weight management and smoking. More people with ADHD reported disordered eating as a health risk (n = 32) than healthcare professionals (n = 5). Generated themes included perceived health risks, impact of living with ADHD, lack of adequate healthcare, and need for ADHD awareness. In respect to advice given (question two), based on responses from 258 professionals, 162 people with ADHD and 100 supporters, the most common advice discussed in consultation was mental health (n = 149, n = 50 and n = 17 respectively). High numbers of respondents reported not giving/receiving advice on wider health (n = 38, n = 88 and n = 61 respectively). CONCLUSIONS Findings demonstrate that respondents perceived a range of physical and mental health risks posed by ADHD. These related to difficulties with activities of daily living, as well as healthcare interactions and the impact of core features of ADHD (e.g. impulsivity, emotional dysregulation). These risks are not currently explicitly addressed in United Kingdom national guidance on ADHD. More work is needed to examine and address the broader health outcomes of people with ADHD.

Abstract
Anxiety is a prevalent mental illness known for its high incidence, comorbidity, and tendency to recur, posing significant societal and individual burdens. Studies have highlighted Interleukin-19 (IL-19) as having potential relevance in neuropsychiatric disorders. Our previous research revealed that IL-19 overexpression in colonies exacerbated anxiety-related behaviors induced by dextran sodium sulfate/stress. However, the precise role and molecular mechanisms of IL-19 in anxiety regulation remain uncertain. In this study, we initiated an acute restraint stress (ARS)-induced anxious mouse model and identified heightened expression of IL-19 and IL-20Rα in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of ARS mice. Notably, IL-19 and IL-20Rα were predominantly present in the excitatory pyramidal neurons of the mPFC under both basal and ARS conditions. Utilizing the adeno-associated virus (AAV) strategy, we demonstrated that IL-19 overexpression in the mPFC induced anxiety-related behaviors and elevated stress susceptibility. Additionally, we observed decreased protein levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) in the mPFC of IL-19 overexpression mice, accompanied by reduced phosphorylation of in the p38, JNK, and Erk signaling pathways. These findings emphasize the role of IL-19 in modulating anxiety-related behaviors within the mPFC and suggest its potential as a pathological gene and therapeutic target for anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotion dysregulation (ED), the difficulty in modulating which emotions are felt, and when and how they are expressed or experienced, has been implicated in an array of psychological disorders. Despite potentially different manifestations depending on the disorder, this symptom is emerging as a transdiagnostic construct that can and should be targeted early, given the associations with various maladaptive behaviors as early as childhood and adolescence. As such, our goal was to investigate the psychotherapeutic interventions used to address ED and gauge their effectiveness, safety, and potential mechanisms across various populations. METHODS This umbrella systematic review, pre-registered under PROSPERO (registration: CRD42023411452), consolidates evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses on psychotherapeutic interventions targeting ED, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS Our synthesis of quantitative and qualitative evidence from 21 systematic reviews (including 11 meta-analyses) points-with moderate overall risk of bias-to the effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in reducing ED in a wide range of adult transdiagnostic psychiatric patients and healthy participants. Similar results have emerged in other less extensively researched methods as well. However, results on adolescents and children are sparse, highlighting the need for additional research to tailor these interventions to the unique challenges of ED in younger populations with diverse externalizing and internalizing disorders. CONCLUSIONS These demonstrated transdiagnostic advantages of psychotherapy for ED underscore the potential for specifically designed interventions that address this issue directly, particularly for high-risk individuals. In these individuals, early interventions targeting transdiagnostic core dimensions may mitigate the emergence of full-blown disorders. Future research on the mediating factors, the durability of intervention effects, and the exploration of understudied interventions and populations may enhance prevention and treatment efficiency, enhancing the quality of life for those affected by varied manifestations of ED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs) present a higher prevalence in individuals with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs). The Stress System and the Gut-Brain axis (GBA) may mediate these relations. We aimed to assess the prevalence and profile of FGIDs in a clinical sample of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) compared to typically developing children (TD) as well as to investigate possible relations between stress-related biomarkers and internalizing/externalizing problems in children with NDDS. METHODS In total, 120 children, aged between 4 and 12 years old, formed three groups (N = 40, each): ADHD, ASD and TD. Salivary cortisol, hair cortisol and serum leptin were measured. RESULTS The ASD group had more FGID problems than the TD group (p = 0.001). The ADHD and ASD groups had higher total internalizing/externalizing problems than the TD group (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, p = 0.005, respectively). Children with FGIDs showed more total, internalizing and externalizing problems compared to children without FGIDs (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, p = 0.041, respectively). The ADHD group showed lower AUCg values (p < 0.0001), while the hair cortisol was higher for the TD group (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In conclusion, children with NDDs had more FGID symptoms and present higher internalizing and externalizing problems. Children with ADHD and FGIDs had more internalizing problems compared to those without FGIDs. No differences in stress-related biomarkers were shown to differentiate children with NDDs with and without FGIDs. Future prospective studies including a greater number of children may elucidate the biological pathways linking these comorbidities.

Abstract
Introduction Drugs targeting monoamine systems remain the most common treatment for disorders with impulse control impairments. There is a body of literature suggesting that drugs affecting serotonin reuptake and dopamine reuptake can modulate distinct aspects of impulsivity - though such tests are often performed using distinct behavioral tasks prohibiting easy comparisons. Methods Here, we directly compare pharmacologic agents that affect dopamine (methylphenidate) vs serotonin (citalopram) manipulations on choice impulsivity in a temporal discounting task where rats could choose between a small, immediate reward or a large reward delayed at either 2 or 10s. In control conditions, rats preferred the large reward at a small (2s) delay and discounted the large reward at a long (10s) delay. Results Methylphenidate, a dopamine transport inhibitor that blocks reuptake of dopamine, dose-dependently increased large reward preference in the long delay (10s) block. Citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, had no effect on temporal discounting behavior. Impulsive behavior on the temporal discounting task was at least partially mediated by the nucleus accumbens shell. Bilateral lesions to the nucleus accumbens shell reduced choice impulsivity during the long delay (10s) block. Following lesions, methylphenidate did not impact impulsivity. Discussion Our results suggest that striatal dopaminergic systems modulate choice impulsivity via actions within the nucleus accumbens shell, whereas serotonin systems may regulate different aspects of behavioral inhibition/impulsivity.

Abstract
Background Epidemiological evidence indicates a high correlation and comorbidity between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Objective We aimed to investigate the causal relationship and shared genetic architecture between ADHD and RLS, as well as explore potential causal associations between both disorders and peripheral iron status. Methods We performed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses using summary statistics from genome-wide meta-analyses of ADHD, RLS, and peripheral iron status (serum iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation, and total iron binding capacity). Additionally, we employed linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) to assess genetic correlations between ADHD and RLS using genetic data. Results Our MR results supports a causal effect from ADHD (as exposure) to RLS (as outcome) (inverse variance weighted OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.08-1.34, p = 0.001). Conversely, we found no a causal association from RLS to ADHD (inverse variance weighted OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.99-1.09, p = 0.11). LDSC analysis did not detect a significant genetic correlation between RLS and ADHD (Rg = 0.3, SE = 0.16, p = 0.068). Furthermore, no evidence supported a causal relationship between peripheral iron deficiency and the RLS or ADHD onset. However, RLS may have been associated with a genetic predisposition to reduced serum ferritin levels (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.00-1.04, p = 0.047). Conclusion This study suggests that ADHD is an independent risk factor for RLS, while RLS may confer a genetic predisposition to reduced serum ferritin levels. Limitations The GWAS summary data utilized originated from populations of European ancestry, limiting the generalizability of conclusions to other populations. Clinical implications The potential co-occurrence of RLS in individuals with ADHD should be considered during diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, iron supplementation may be beneficial for alleviating RLS symptoms.

Abstract
Background Chronic and acute inflammation of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue have been positively linked to the development of psychiatric disorders in observational studies. However, it remains unclear whether this association is causal. In the present study, we investigated this association, using as proxies genetically predicted tonsillectomy, appendectomy and appendicitis on psychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder (MDD), schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar depression (BD) and anxiety (ANX) via a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Genetic association summary statistics for tonsillectomy, appendectomy and appendicitis were sourced from FinnGen Consortium, comprising data from 342,000 participants. Genetic correlations between all exposures and outcome were calculated with Linkage Disequilibrium Score (LDSC) Regression analysis. MR estimates were then calculated to assess their impact on the risk of developing psychiatric disorders. Sensitivity analysis was employed to test for any directional pleiotropy. Results Our results suggest that there is no direct causal association between tonsillectomy, appendectomy or appendicitis with a heightened risk for development of psychiatric disorders. The robustness of the results of the main MR analysis was further confirmed with additional sensitivity analyses. However, a moderate inverse genetic correlation was observed between tonsillectomy and MDD traits (rg=-0.39, p-value (P)=7.5x10-5). Conclusion Our findings provide, for the first time, evidence that there is no causal association between tonsillectomy or appendectomy on subsequent vulnerability of developing psychiatric disorders. Future studies using larger sample size GWAS should focus on unraveling the confounding factors and mediators to investigate this relationship further.

Abstract
Background: The diagnostics and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in women remain insufficient. Fluctuations of reproductive hormones during the premenstrual period, postpartum period, and (peri)menopause are neglected, even though they impact ADHD symptoms and associated mood disorders. Therefore, we created a female-specific treatment group for women with ADHD and premenstrual worsening of ADHD and/or mood symptoms. Methods: We describe the group programme and underlying rationale, offering a qualitative analysis of the participants' evaluation. Results: The seven bi-weekly sessions foreground the menstrual cycle and address several ADHD-specific topics in relation to this cyclical pattern. Concurrently, women track their menstrual cycle and (fluctuating) ADHD and mood symptoms with an adjusted premenstrual calendar. In total, 18 women (25-47 years) participated in three consecutive groups. We analysed the evaluation of the last group. Participants experienced the group as a safe and welcoming space. Recognition was valued by all. The topics discussed were deemed valuable, and the structure suited them well. Completing the premenstrual calendar augmented the awareness and recognition of individual cyclical symptoms. A lifespan approach increased self-understanding. Participants took their menstrual cycle more seriously, prioritising self-acceptance and self-care. Conclusions: Exploring a cyclical approach in a group setting seems to be a positive addition to treatment for female ADHD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Stress is a known risk factor for numerous psychopathologies, whereas evidence is lacking regarding the specific consequences of stress on the neural basis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A systematic literature review was thus conducted to clarify the role of stress in the association between the resulting alterations of brain structure, connectivity, and function in ADHD. METHODS The study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under identifier CRD42023379809. A systematic search of the PubMed and CINAHL databases was conducted for articles published prior to December 22nd, 2022. Retrieved literature was screened in Rayyan and data extraction was performed with respect to neuroimaging, stress exposure, and ADHD outcomes. The Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool was adapted based on the Conducting Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses of Observational Studies of Etiology (COSMOS-E) guidance article to assess risk of bias and quality of studies. Strength of the evidence was assessed under the guidance of the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. RESULTS Screening 25,026 non-duplicate articles yielded 20 eligible studies for inclusion. Exposure to early life trauma, institutionalization, prenatal smoking or alcohol consumption, air pollution, low socioeconomic status, or low birth weight were associated with alterations in brain structure, function, and connectivity in ADHD. However, most studies did not provide strong evidence due to small sample sizes and lack of statistical approaches to determine a direct mediation of the association between stress and ADHD by neural outcomes. CONCLUSION This systematic review was the first to summarize evidence of structural and functional stress-associated alterations in the brain, which were found to be directly and indirectly associated with ADHD outcomes. Overall, stress requires consideration as a significant determinant of neurodevelopmental outcomes in ADHD. However, extensive further research is warranted due to little available evidence and the difficulty of obtaining clear results. In light of such a complex research question, in order to confirm findings, provide further evidence, and establish causality systematic longitudinal studies would be required. Investigating the topic may provide invaluable information when it comes to tailoring prevention and treatment strategies in ADHD, and should be pursued in order to integrate the factor of stress into a more comprehensive understanding of ADHD.

Abstract
Background Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by impairments in developmental-behavioral inhibition, resulting in impulsivity and hyperactivity. Recent research has underscored cortical inhibition deficiencies in ADHD via the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic system, which is crucial for maintaining excitatory-inhibitory balance in the brain. This study explored postnatal changes in parvalbumin (PV) immunoreactivity, indicating GABAergic interneuron types, in the prefrontal (PFC) and motor (MC) cortices of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), an ADHD animal model. Methods Examining PV- positive (PV+) cells associated with dopamine D2 receptors (D2) and the impact of dopamine on GABA synthesis, we also investigated changes in the immunoreactivity of D2 and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Brain sections from 4- to 10-week-old SHRs and Wistar Kyoto rats (WKYs) were immunohistochemically analyzed, comparing PV+, D2+ cells, and TH+ fiber densities across age-matched SHRs and WKYs in specific PFC/MC regions. Results The results revealed significantly reduced PV+ cell density in SHRs: prelimbic (~20% less), anterior cingulate (~15% less), primary (~15% less), and secondary motor (~17% less) cortices. PV+ deficits coincided with the upregulation of D2 in prepubertal SHRs and the downregulation of TH predominantly in pubertal/postpubertal SHRs. Conclusion Reduced PV+ cells in various PFC regions could contribute to inattention/behavioral alterations in ADHD, while MC deficits could manifest as motor hyperactivity. D2 upregulation and TH deficits may impact GABA synthesis, exacerbating behavioral deficits in ADHD. These findings not only shed new light on ADHD pathophysiology but also pave the way for future research endeavors.

Abstract
Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury arises from inadequate oxygen delivery to the brain, commonly occurring following cardiac arrest, which lacks effective treatments. Recent studies have demonstrated the therapeutic potential of exosomes released from mesenchymal stem cells. Given the challenge of systemic dilution associated with intravenous administration, intranasal delivery has emerged as a promising approach. In this study, we investigate the effects of intranasally administered exosomes in an animal model. Exosomes were isolated from the cell supernatants using the ultracentrifugation method. Brain injury was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats through a transient four-vessel occlusion model. Intranasal administration was conducted with 3 × 108 exosome particles in 20 µL of PBS or PBS alone, administered daily for 7 days post-injury. Long-term cognitive behavioral assessments, biodistribution of exosomes, and histological evaluations of apoptosis and neuroinflammation were conducted. Exosomes were primarily detected in the olfactory bulb one hour after intranasal administration, subsequently distributing to the striatum and midbrain. Rats treated with exosomes exhibited substantial improvement in cognitive function up to 28 days after the insult, and demonstrated significantly fewer apoptotic cells along with higher neuronal cell survival in the hippocampus. Exosomes were found to be taken up by microglia, leading to a decrease in the expression of cytotoxic inflammatory markers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lead (Pb) does not have any biological function in a human, and it is likely no safe level of Pb in the human body. The Pb exposure impacts are a global concern for their potential neurotoxic consequences. Despite decreasing both the environmental Pb levels and the average blood Pb levels in the survey populations, the lifetime redistribution from the tissues-stored Pb still poses neurotoxic risks from the low-level exposure in later life. The growing fetus and children hold their innate high-susceptible to these Pb-induced neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral effects. OBJECTIVE This article aims to evaluate cumulative studies and insights on the topic of Pb neurotoxicology while assessing the emerging trends in the field. RESULTS The Pb-induced neurochemical and neuro-immunological mechanisms are likely responsible for the high-level Pb exposure with the neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral impacts at the initial stages. Early-life Pb exposure can still produce neurodegenerative consequences in later life due to the altered epigenetic imprints and the ongoing endogenous Pb exposure. Several mechanisms contribute to the Pb-induced neurotoxic impacts, including the direct neurochemical effects, the induction of oxidative stress and inflammation through immunologic activations, and epigenetic alterations. Furthermore, the individual nutritional status, such as macro-, micro-, or antioxidant nutrients, can significantly influence the neurotoxic impacts even at low-level exposure to Pb. CONCLUSION The prevention of early-life Pb exposure is, therefore, the critical determinant for alleviating various Pb-induced neurotoxic impacts across the different age groups.

Abstract
Emotion dysregulation (ED) describes a difficulty with the modulation of which emotions are felt, as well as when and how these emotions are experienced or expressed. It is a focal overarching symptom in many severe and prevalent neuropsychiatric diseases, including bipolar disorders (BD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD). In all these disorders, ED can manifest through symptoms of depression, anxiety, or affective lability. Considering the many symptomatic similarities between BD, ADHD, and BPD, a transdiagnostic approach is a promising lens of investigation. Mounting evidence supports the role of peripheral inflammatory markers and stress in the multifactorial aetiology and physiopathology of BD, ADHD, and BPD. Of note, neural circuits that regulate emotions appear particularly vulnerable to inflammatory insults and peripheral inflammation, which can impact the neuroimmune milieu of the central nervous system. Thus far, few studies have examined the link between ED and inflammation in BD, ADHD, and BPD. To our knowledge, no specific work has provided a critical comparison of the results from these disorders. To fill this gap in the literature, we review the known associations and mechanisms linking ED and inflammation in general, and clinically, in BD, ADHD, and BD. Our narrative review begins with an examination of the routes linking ED and inflammation, followed by a discussion of disorder-specific results accounting for methodological limitations and relevant confounding factors. Finally, we critically discuss both correspondences and discrepancies in the results and comment on potential vulnerability markers and promising therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Introduction Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an unclear etiology. Systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation may play a role in the pathogenesis of ADHD. Morphology-derived parameters such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), have been proposed as peripheral biomarkers of the immune-inflammatory process in various diseases. However, studies examining their role in ADHD remain inconclusive. Methods A systematic review and a meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the association between NLR, MLR, PLR and ADHD. Relevant articles were identified, screened, and assessed for quality according to PRISMA guidelines. Moreover, a qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed. Results The review contained eight eligible studies, five of which were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed that ADHD patients had higher NLR and PLR values compared to health controls. No significant difference in MLR value was observed between the two groups. Analysis in relation to ADHD subtypes showed no significant differences in inflammatory markers in any of the included studies as well. The influence of medical treatment on these ratios could not be adequately assessed due to limited data. Conclusion ADHD patients exhibit higher NLR and PLR than healthy controls, which may indicate the potential immune-inflammatory involvement in this disorder. Further studies on inflammatory markers and ADHD, especially those considering the impact of treatment and clinical symptoms, are essential to comprehensively understand this association.

Abstract
Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are the most common animal model used to study attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to look at the impact of neuroinflammation and autophagy on blood-brain barrier function in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of ADHD rats. The rats were separated into three groups: juvenile SHR (6 weeks), mature SHR (12 weeks), and comparable age WKY groups. An open-field test was used to assess rats' ability to move on their own. Immunofluorescence was used to detect the Iba1-immunopositive microglia, ZO-1 and TNF-α. Meanwhile, the expression of p62, Beclin-1, LC3B, and MMP9, MMP2, TNF-α, ZO-1, and occludin were detected by Western blot. The results have shown that Iba1-immunopositive microglia and TNF-α protein in the brain of SHR rats were significantly increased. Moreover, autophagy of cells and the level of MMP2 and MPP9 in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus increased in SHR rats. In addition, the expression of ZO-1 and occludin was decreased in SHR rats. To sum up, the increase of neuroinflammation and excessive autophagy were essential factors for the damage of blood-brain barrier structure and function.

Abstract
Aims: To identify associations between DNA methylation (DNAm) across the epigenome and symptoms related to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in a population of Hispanic children. Materials & methods: Among 517 participants in the ELEMENT study aged 9-18 years, we conducted an epigenome-wide association study examining associations between blood leukocyte DNAm and performance on the Conners' continuous performance test (CPT3). Results: DNAm at loci in or near ZNF814, ELF4 and OR6K6 and functional enrichment for gene pathways pertaining to ferroptosis, inflammation, immune response and neurotransmission were significantly related to CPT3 scores. Conclusion: DNAm was associated with CPT3 performance. Further analysis is warranted to understand how these genes and enriched pathways contribute to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine potential disparities in hematologic inflammation parameters between children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their healthy counterparts and to determine whether atomoxetine treatment induced any alterations in inflammation indicators. This case-control study involved 43 children aged 6-13 years, 22 diagnosed with ADHD for the first time, and 21 healthy children. In all children, complete blood count and albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (free T4), folate, vitamin B12, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), creatinine and urea values were performed. Children with ADHD were started on atomoxetine treatment, and one month later, the blood test was repeated for those who commenced treatment. Neutrophil (p = 0.005), platelet (PLT) (p = 0.002), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (p = 0.001), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (p < 0.001), systemic immune /inflammation index (SII) (p < 0.001) and pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) (p = 0.025) parameters were found to be significantly higher than the control group, while the lymphocyte value (p = 0.001) was found to be significantly lower. In those in the ADHD group, lymphocyte (p = 0.041) and albumin (p = 0.027) values increased significantly after treatment. The results of this study show the increase in inflammation in drug-naive ADHD patients and the partial improvement after treatment. However, there is a need to evaluate inflammation in larger samples after longer-term treatments and follow-ups.

Abstract
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with psychiatric comorbidity. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder associated with systemic and skin inflammation such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Whether HS symptoms are associated with ADHD symptoms remains unexplored. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the possible association between HS and ADHD. Participants in the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS) were included in this cross-sectional study during 2015-2017. The participants provided questionnaire data on screening items of HS, ADHD symptoms (ASRS-score), and depressive symptoms, smoking and body mass index (BMI). A logistic regression with HS symptoms as a binary outcome predicted by ADHD adjusted for age, sex, smoking, BMI, and depression was conducted to investigate the association between HS and ADHD. A total of 52,909 Danish blood donors were included in the study. Of these were 1004/52,909 (1.9%) considered participants with HS. Of the participants with HS, 74/996 (7.4%) screened positive of ADHD symptoms, while only 1786/51,129 (3.5%) of the participants without HS screened positive of ADHD. Adjusted for confounders, ADHD was positively associated with HS, odds ratio 1.85 (95% confidence interval: 1.43-2.37). Psychiatric comorbidity of HS is not limited to depression and anxiety. This study shows a positive association between HS and ADHD. Further research on the biological mechanisms behind this association is warranted.

Abstract
Dopamine is a well-known neurotransmitter due to its involvement in Parkinson's disease (PD). Dopamine is not only involved in PD but also controls multiple mental and physical activities, such as the pleasure of food, friends and loved ones, music, art, mood, cognition, motivation, fear, affective disorders, addiction, attention deficit disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. Dopaminergic neurons (DOPAn) are susceptible to stressors, and inflammation is a recognized risk for neuronal malfunctioning and cell death in major neurodegenerative diseases. Less is known for non-neurodegenerative conditions. Among the endogenous defenses, bilirubin, a heme metabolite, has been shown to possess important anti-inflammatory activity and, most importantly, to prevent DOPAn demise in an ex vivo model of PD by acting on the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα). This review summarizes the evidence linking DOPAn, inflammation (when possible, specifically TNFα), and bilirubin as an anti-inflammatory in order to understand what is known, the gaps that need filling, and the hypotheses of anti-inflammatory strategies to preserve dopamine homeostasis with bilirubin included.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is the most prevalent respiratory disease caused by chronic airway inflammation. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is children's most common psychological and neurodevelopmental disorder. Increased risk for ADHD in patients with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases supports the role of inflammatory mechanisms in the occurrence of ADHD. However, the association between asthma and ADHD remains unclear. OBJECTIVE This study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of ADHD in patients with asthma who were referred to the clinic of allergy and clinical immunology. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on children aged 6 to 18 with asthma at Imam Ali hospital, Karaj, Iran. The patient's demographic data, history of childbirth delivery type, premature birth, hospital admission, family income, birth rate, and family history information related to the patient's asthma and medicines were recorded. ADHD diagnosis was made using the Persian version of Conners Parent Behavioral Problems Rating Scale (CPRS-26). RESULTS In this study, 677 asthmatic patients were enrolled; 46 patients (6.8%) had ADHD. The probability of ADHD in asthmatic patients inhabited in a rural area, males, and patients with a history of food allergy, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and eczema was significantly higher (p < 0.05). In addition, our result demonstrated that the likelihood of ADHD in patients with asthma and a history of PICU admission was significantly higher (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that severe asthma, was the risk factor for ADHD in patients with asthma. Physicians should be aware of this co-morbidity to refer asthmatic patients who have the symptoms of ADHD to a psychologist.

Abstract
Context Cortisol, a hormone regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, has been linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The nature of the relationship between cortisol and ADHD, and whether it is causal or explained by reverse causality, remains a matter of debate. Objective This study aims to evaluate the bidirectional causal relationship between morning plasma cortisol levels and ADHD. Methods This study used a bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design to analyze the association between morning plasma cortisol levels and ADHD using genetic information from the authoritative Psychiatric Genomics Collaboration (PGC) database (n = 55,347) and the ADHD Working Group of the CORtisol NETwork (CORNET) Consortium (n = 12,597). MR analyses were employed: inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger regression, and weighted medians. OR values and 95% CI were used to evaluate whether there was a causal association between morning plasma cortisol levels on ADHD and ADHD on morning plasma cortisol levels. The Egger-intercept method was employed to test for level pleiotropy. Sensitivity analysis was performed using the "leave-one-out" method, MR pleiotropy residual sum, and MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO). Results Findings from bidirectional MR demonstrated that lower morning plasma cortisol levels were associated with ADHD (ADHD-cortisol OR = 0.857; 95% CI, 0.755-0.974; P = 0.018), suggesting there is a reverse causal relationship between cortisol and ADHD. However, morning plasma cortisol levels were not found to have a causal effect on the risk of ADHD (OR = 1.006; 95% CI, 0.909-1.113; P = 0.907), despite the lack of genetic evidence. The MR-Egger method revealed intercepts close to zero, indicating that the selected instrumental variables had no horizontal multiplicity. The "leave-one-out" sensitivity analysis revealed stable results, with no instrumental variables significantly affecting the results. Heterogeneity tests were insignificant, and MR-PRESSO did not detect any significant outliers. The selected single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) F were all >10, indicating no weak instrumental variables. Thus, the overall MR analysis results were reliable. Conclusion The study findings suggest a reverse causal relationship between morning plasma cortisol levels and ADHD, with low cortisol levels associated with ADHD. No genetic evidence was found to support a causal relationship between morning plasma cortisol levels and the risk of ADHD. These results suggest that ADHD may lead to a significant reduction in morning plasma cortisol secretion.

Abstract
Almost a third of bariatric surgery patients present suboptimal weight loss or important weight regain in the first five postoperative years. While the reasons underlying this are not fully understood, it is known that pathological eating styles (such as emotional or binge eating) can thwart efforts to maintain weight loss. However, detailed characterization and understanding of these eating styles have yet to be achieved. In particular, research on gender differences in pathological eating styles and psychiatric symptoms before bariatric surgery is lacking. To characterize gender differences in eating styles and their association with clinical symptoms, we prospectively enrolled 110 bariatric surgery candidates, collecting eating styles and clinical scores. Women displayed a higher frequency of emotional eating as compared to men (x2 = 9.07, p = 0.003), while men showed a higher frequency of quantitative eating behavioral style (x2 = 4.58, p = 0.044). Binge eating style was associated with higher Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D), and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) scores (p < 0.05). Emotional eating style was associated with higher HAM-D and HAM-A scores (p < 0.05). The present findings highlight the importance of understanding the role of gender differences in emotion regulation processes involved in the development and maintenance of pathological eating styles in bariatric surgery candidates. This paves the way to gender- and symptoms-specific interventions on eating behaviors to improve surgery long-term outcomes.

Abstract
The neurovascular unit (NVU) is a dynamic center for substance exchange between the blood and the brain, making it an essential gatekeeper for central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. Recent evidence supports a role for the NVU in modulating brain function and cognition. In addition, alterations in NVU processes are observed in response to stress, although the mechanisms via which they can affect mood and cognitive functions remain elusive. Here, we summarize recent studies of neurovascular regulation of emotional processes and cognitive function, including under stressful conditions. We also highlight relevant RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) databases aiming to profile the NVU along with innovative tools to study and manipulate NVU function that can be exploited in the context of cognition and stress research throughout development, aging, or brain disorders.

Abstract
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition that affects up to 2.7% of the population and is highly linked to functional impairment and suicide. Despite its severity, there is a lack of knowledge about its pathophysiology. Studies show genetic influence and childhood violence as factors that may contribute to the development of BPD; however, the involvement of neuroinflammation in BPD remains poorly investigated. This article aimed to explore the pathophysiology of BPD according to the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress substances that exacerbate neuronal damage. Few articles have been published on this theme. They show that patients with BPD have a lower level of BDNF and a higher level of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 in peripheral blood, associated with increased plasma levels of oxidative stress markers, such as malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine. Therefore, more research on the topic is needed, mainly with a pre-clinical and clinical focus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common affective disorder characterized by recurrent oscillations between mood states and associated with inflammatory diseases and chronic inflammation. However, data on MRI abnormalities in BD and their relationship with inflammation are heterogeneous and no review has recapitulated them. METHODS In this pre-registered (PROSPERO: CRD42022308461) systematic review we searched Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed for articles correlating functional or structural MRI measures with immune-related markers in BD. RESULTS We included 23 studies (6 on functional, 16 on structural MRI findings, 1 on both, including 1'233 BD patients). Overall, the quality of the studies included was fair, with a low risk of bias. LIMITATIONS Heterogeneity in the methods and results of the studies and small sample sizes limit the generalizability of the conclusions. CONCLUSIONS A qualitative synthesis suggests that the links between immune traits and functional or structural MRI alterations point toward brain areas involved in affective and somatomotor processing, with a trend toward a negative correlation between peripheral inflammatory markers and brain regions volume. We discuss how disentangling the complex relationship between the immune system and MRI alterations in BD may unveil mechanisms underlying symptoms pathophysiology, potentially with quickly translatable diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications.

Abstract
AbstractAttention, as it is now defined as a process matching data from the environment to the needs of the organism, is one of the main aspects of human cognitive processes. There are several aspects to attention including tonic alertness (a process of intrinsic arousal that varies by minutes to hours), phasic alertness (a process that causes a quick change in attention as a result of a brief stimulus), selective attention (a process differentiating multiple stimuli), and sustained attention (a process maintaining persistence of response and continuous effort over an extended period). Attention dysfunction is associated with multiple disorders; therefore, there has been much effort in assessing attention and its domains, resulting in a battery of tests evaluating one or several attentional domains; instances of which are the Stroop color-word test, Test of Everyday Attention, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. These tests vary in terms of utilities, range of age, and domains. The role of attention in human life and the importance of assessing it merits an inclusive review of the efforts made to assess attention and the resulting tests; Here we highlight all the necessary data regarding neurophysiological tests which assess human attentive function and investigates the evolution of attention tests over time. Also, the ways of assessing the attention in untestable patients who have difficulty in reading or using a computer, along with the lack of ability to comprehend verbal instructions and executive tasks, are discussed. This review can be of help as a platform for designing new studies to researchers who are interested in working on attention and conditions causing deficits in this aspect of body function, by collecting and organizing information on its assessment.

Abstract
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by dopaminergic dysfunction. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate that there is a link between dopaminergic deficit and neuroinflammation that underlies ADHD symptoms. We used a validated ADHD mice model involving perinatal 6-OHDA lesions. The animals received abscisic acid (ABA), an anti-inflammatory phytohormone, at a concentration of 20 mg/L (drinking water) for one month. We tested a battery of behavior tests, learning and memory, anxiety, social interactions, and pain thresholds in female and male mice (control and lesioned, with or without ABA treatment). Postmortem, we analyzed microglia morphology and Ape1 expression in specific brain areas related to the descending pain inhibitory pathway. In females, the dopaminergic deficit increased pain sensitivity but not hyperactivity. In contrast, males displayed hyperactivity but showed no increased pain sensitivity. In females, pain sensitivity was associated with inflammatory microglia and lower Ape1 levels in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and posterior insula cortex (IC). In addition, ABA treatment alleviated pain sensitivity concomitant with reduced inflammation and normalized APE1. In males, ABA reduced hyperactivity but had no significant effect on inflammation in these areas. This is the first study proving a sex-dependent association between dopamine dysfunction and inflammation in specific brain areas, hence leading to different behavioral outcomes in a mouse model of ADHD. These findings provide new clues for potential treatments for ADHD.

Abstract
Investigation of the precise mechanisms of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other dopamine-associated conditions is crucial for the development of new treatment approaches. In this study, we assessed the effects of repeated and acute administration of α2A-adrenoceptor agonist guanfacine on innate and learned forms of behavior of dopamine transporter knockout (DAT-KO) rats to evaluate the possible noradrenergic modulation of behavioral deficits. DAT-KO and wild type rats were trained in the Hebb-Williams maze to perform spatial working memory tasks. Innate behavior was evaluated via pre pulse inhibition (PPI). Brain activity of the prefrontal cortex and the striatum was assessed. Repeated administration of GF improved the spatial working memory task fulfillment and PPI in DAT-KO rats, and led to specific changes in the power spectra and coherence of brain activity. Our data indicate that both repeated and acute treatment with a non-stimulant noradrenergic drug lead to improvements in the behavior of DAT-KO rats. This study further supports the role of the intricate balance of norepinephrine and dopamine in the regulation of attention. The observed compensatory effect of guanfacine on the behavior of hyperdopaminergic rats may be used in the development of combined treatments to support the dopamine-norepinephrine balance.

Abstract
Social stress is common among people and is considered one of the causes of the declining birth rate. Predisposition to stress and stress-induced disorders is largely determined genetically. We hypothesized that due to differences in stress resistance, carriers of different genetic variants of genes associated with stress resilience and stress-induced diseases may have dissimilar numbers of offspring under conditions of long-term social stress. To test this hypothesis, a comparative analysis of frequencies of seven common polymorphic regions [exon 3 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) of the DRD4 gene, rs4680 of COMT, STin2 VNTR and the 5-HTTLPR (rs774676466) insertion/deletion polymorphism of SLC6A4, rs4570625 of TPH2, rs6265 of BDNF, and rs258747 of NR3C1] was performed on standardized groups of randomly selected adolescents born before, during, and after severe socioeconomic deprivation (the crisis of the 1990s in Russia). There were significant differences in frequencies of "long" alleles of the DRD4 gene (p = 0.020, χ2 = 5.492) and rs4680 (p = 0.022, χ2 = 5.289) in the "crisis" group as compared to the combined "noncrisis" population. It is possible that the dopaminergic system had an impact on the successful adaptation of a person to social stress.

Abstract
Psychiatric diseases exact a heavy socioeconomic toll, and it is particularly difficult to identify their risk factors and causative mechanisms due to their multifactorial nature, the limited physiopathological insight, the many confounding factors, and the potential reverse causality between the risk factors and psychiatric diseases. These characteristics make Mendelian randomization (MR) a precious tool for studying these disorders. MR is an analytical method that employs genetic variants linked to a certain risk factor, to assess if an observational association between that risk factor and a health outcome is compatible with a causal relationship. We report the first systematic review of all existing applications and findings of MR in psychiatric disorders, aiming at facilitating the identification of risk factors that may be common to different psychiatric diseases, and paving the way to transdiagnostic MR studies in psychiatry, which are currently lacking. We searched Web of Knowledge, Scopus, and Pubmed databases (until 3 May 2022) for articles on MR in psychiatry. The protocol was preregistered in PROSPERO (CRD42021285647). We included methodological details and results from 50 articles, mainly on schizophrenia, major depression, autism spectrum disorders, and bipolar disorder. While this review shows how MR can offer unique opportunities for unraveling causal links in risk factors and etiological elements of specific psychiatric diseases and transdiagnostically, some methodological flaws in the existing literature limit reliability of results and probably underlie their heterogeneity. We highlight perspectives and recommendations for future works on MR in psychiatry.

Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that can diminish the quality of life of both children and adults in academic, occupational, and social contexts. The kynurenine pathway (KP) contains a set of enzymatic reactions involved in tryptophan (TRP) degradation. It is known to be associated with the risk of developing ADHD. This review will address the KP and underlying mechanism of inflammation in ADHD. Potential inflammatory biomarkers reported in the most recent studies are summarized. Abstract
Prior experience represents a prerequisite for memory consolidation across various memory systems. In the context of olfaction, sleep was found to enhance the consolidation of odors in adults but not in typically developing children (TDC), likely due to differences in pre-experience. Interestingly, unmedicated children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental condition related to dopamine dysfunction, showed lower perceptive thresholds for odors, potentially allowing for more odor experience compared to TDC. We investigated sleep-associated odor memory consolidation in ADHD. Twenty-eight children with ADHD and thirty age-matched TDC participated in an incidental odor recognition task. For the sleep groups (ADHD: n = 14, TDC: n = 15), the encoding of 10 target odorants took place in the evening, and the retention of odorants was tested with 10 target odorants and 10 distractor odorants the next morning. In the wake groups (ADHD: n = 14, TDC: n = 15), the time schedule was reversed. Odor memory consolidation was superior in the ADHD sleep group compared to the TDC sleep and the ADHD wake groups. Intensity and familiarity ratings during encoding were substantially higher in ADHD compared to TDC. Sleep-associated odor memory consolidation in ADHD is superior to TDC. Abundant pre-experience due to lower perceptive thresholds is suggested as a possible explanation. Olfaction might serve as a biomarker in ADHD.

Abstract
Nearly half a century has passed since the discovery of cytoplasmic inheritance of human chloramphenicol resistance. The inheritance was then revealed to take place maternally by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Later, a number of mutations in mtDNA were identified as a cause of severe inheritable metabolic diseases with neurological manifestation, and the impairment of mitochondrial functions has been probed in the pathogenesis of a wide range of illnesses including neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, a growing number of preclinical studies have revealed that animal behaviors are influenced by the impairment of mitochondrial functions and possibly by the loss of mitochondrial stress resilience. Indeed, as high as 54% of patients with one of the most common primary mitochondrial diseases, mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome, present psychiatric symptoms including cognitive impairment, mood disorder, anxiety, and psychosis. Mitochondria are multifunctional organelles which produce cellular energy and play a major role in other cellular functions including homeostasis, cellular signaling, and gene expression, among others. Mitochondrial functions are observed to be compromised and to become less resilient under continuous stress. Meanwhile, stress and inflammation have been linked to the activation of the tryptophan (Trp)-kynurenine (KYN) metabolic system, which observably contributes to the development of pathological conditions including neurological and psychiatric disorders. This review discusses the functions of mitochondria and the Trp-KYN system, the interaction of the Trp-KYN system with mitochondria, and the current understanding of the involvement of mitochondria and the Trp-KYN system in preclinical and clinical studies of major neurological and psychiatric diseases.

Background
Recent guidelines emphasize the importance of functional outcomes in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here, we assess the functional outcomes of the oral delivery system of osmotic-release methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) and atomoxetine (ATX) from the retrospective review of the chart for the last 2 years in the clinic.
Results
Linear mixed-effects models were performed with outcome measures of difference in ADHD symptoms and functional impairment. After 9–12 weeks, OROS-MPH and ATX were statistically equivalent for total Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Report (WFIRS-P) scores (difference in slope is β = 0.004, p = 1.000). However, OROS-MPH was superior to ATX in terms of school domain (difference in slope is β = 0.139, p < 0.001); ATX was superior in the family domain (slope difference in slope is β = 0.103, p < 0.001). The other domains of functioning both were not responsive to pharmacotherapy and were similar between the two medications.
Conclusions
Optimal management should monitor functional progress in ADHD beyond the core symptoms. As expected, ADHD medications provide a distinct pattern of functional improvement. Pharmacotherapy alone offers promising and reliable outcomes to improve school and family functions in ADHD. Some functional improvements did not respond to the medication; therefore, many of the techniques derived from behavioral interventions should be considered.

Abstract
Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) include excessive activity, difficulty sustaining attention, and inability to act in a reflective manner. Early diagnosis and treatment of ADHD is key but may be influenced by the observation and communication skills of caregivers, and the experience of the medical professional. Attempts to obtain additional measures to support the medical diagnosis, such as reaction time when performing a task, can be found in the literature. We propose an information recording system that allows to study in detail the behavior shown by children already diagnosed with ADHD during a car driving video game. We continuously record the participants' activity throughout the task and calculate the error committed. Studying the trajectory graphs, some children showed uniform patterns, others lost attention from one point onwards, and others alternated attention/inattention intervals. Results show a dependence between the age of the children and their performance. Moreover, by analyzing the positions by age over time using clustering, we show that it is possible to classify children according to their performance. Future studies will examine whether this detailed information about each child's performance pattern can be used to fine-tune treatment.
