Norfloxacin pollution alters species composition and stability of plankton communities

Chronic toxic effects of erythromycin and its photodegradation products on microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The photodegradation products (PDPs) of antibiotics in the aquatic environment received increasing concern, but their chronic effects on microalgae remain unclear. This study initially focused on examining the acute effects of erythromycin (ERY), then explored the chronic impacts of ERY PDPs on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. ERY of 4.0 - 32 mg/L ERY notably inhibited the cell growth and chlorophyll synthesis. The determined 96 h median effective concentration of ERY to C. pyrenoidosa was 11.78 mg/L. Higher concentrations of ERY induced more serious oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymes alleviated the oxidative stress. 6 PDPs (PDP749, PDP747, PDP719, PDP715, PDP701 and PDP557) were identified in the photodegradation process of ERY. The predicted combined toxicity of PDPs increased in the first 3 h, then decreased. Chronic exposure showed a gradual decreasing inhibition on microalgae growth and chlorophyll content. The acute effect of ERY PDPs manifested as growth stimulation, but the chronic effect manifested as growth inhibition. The malonaldehyde contents decreased with the degradation time of ERY at 7, 14 and 21 d. However, the malonaldehyde contents of ERY PDPs treatments were elevated compared to those in the control group after 21 d. Risk assessment still need to consider the potential toxicity of degradation products under long-term exposure.

Ecological impact of surfactant Tween-80 on plankton: High-scale analyses reveal deeper hazards

The ecological risks of surfactants have been largely neglected because of their low toxicity. Multiscale studies have indicated that even if a pollutant causes no acute toxicity in a test species, it may alter interspecific interactions and community characteristics through sublethal impacts on test organisms. Therefore, we investigated the lethal and sublethal responses of the plankton species Scenedesmus quadricauda, Chlorella vulgaris, and Daphnia magna, to surfactant Tween-80. Then, high-scale responses in grazer life-history traits and stability of the D. magna-larval damselfly system were further explored. The results showed that discernible adverse effects on the growth or survival of the three plankton species were evident only at exceptionally high concentrations (≥100 mg L-1). However, 10 mg L-1 of Tween-80 notably affected the MDA concentration in grazer species, simultaneously displaying a tendency to diminish grazer's heartbeat and swimming frequency. Furthermore, Tween-80 reduced the grazer reproductive capacity and increased its predation risk by larval damselflies, which ultimately jeopardized the stability of the D. magna-larval damselfly system at much lower concentrations (10-100 fold lower) than the individual-scale responses. This study provides evidence that high-scale traits are far more sensitive to Tween-80, compared with individual-scale traits for plankton organisms, suggesting that the ecological risks of Tween-80 demand careful reassessment. SYNOPSIS: The concentration of Tween-80 needed to induce changes in community characteristics is markedly lower than that needed to produce individual-scale consequences. Thus, high-scale analyses have broad implications for understanding the hazardous effects of surfactants compared with an individual-scale analysis.

Environmental remediation of the norfloxacin in water by adsorption: Advances, current status and prospects

Antibiotics are considered as the new generation water pollutants as these disturb endocrine systems if water contaminated with antibiotics is consumed. Among many antibiotics norfloxacin is present in various natural water bodies globally. This antibiotic is considered an emerging pollutant due to its low degradation in aquatic animals. Besides, it has many side effects on human vital organs. Therefore, the present article discusses the recent advances in the removal of norfloxacin by adsorption. This article describes the presence of norfloxacin in natural water, consumption, toxicity, various adsorbents for norfloxacin removal, optimization factors for norfloxacin removal, kinetics, thermodynamics, modeling, adsorption mechanism and regeneration of the adsorbents. Adsorption takes place in a monolayer following the Langmuir model. The Pseudo-second order model represents the kinetic data. The adsorption capacity ranged from 0.924 to 1282 mg g-1. In this sense, the parameters such as the NFX concentration added to the adsorbent textural properties exerted a great influence. Besides, the fixed bed-based removal at a large scale is also included. In addition to this, the simulation studies were also discussed to describe the adsorption mechanism. Finally, the research challenges and future perspectives have also been highlighted. This article will be highly useful for academicians, researchers, industry persons, and government authorities for designing future advanced experiments.

Microplastics affect interspecific interactions between cladoceran species in the absence and presence of predators by triggering asymmetric individual responses

Although many studies have reported the negative effects of microplastics on aquatic organisms, most research is focused on individual scales. Individual studies highlight harm mechanisms, but understanding broader ecological effects necessitates evidence from multiscale perspectives, particularly those based on interspecific interactions. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the impacts of different microplastic concentrations (0, 0.4, 2, and 10 mg/L) on individual characteristics (physiology, behavior, and grazing rate) and population dynamics of two cladoceran species Daphnia magna and Scapholeberis kingi, and their interrelationships within communities in the absence and presence of predators (larvae of Agriocnemis pygmaea). We used 32-38 μm polyethylene microplastics; these particles were detected in the guts of D. magna, especially at higher concentrations, but were not found in S. kingi. Consequently, with increasing microplastic concentrations, the grazing and reproductive capacity of D. magna diminished, weakening their dominance in the coexistence system without damselfly larvae. Additionally, as microplastic concentration increased, D. magna faced greater oxidative damage and a reduction in mobility, making this species more susceptible to predation by damselfly larvae and less dominant in the predator-inhabited coexistence system. This study reveals the mechanism by which asymmetric impacts of microplastics on individual traits altered interspecific competition between zooplankton species, thereby illuminating the role of microplastics in altering zooplankton communities.

Grazing inhibition in Daphnia and Bosmina by colony formation of Desmodesmus subspicatus triggered by sodium octyl sulfate

There are growing concerns that several aquatic contaminants can indirectly alter biological interactions by inhibiting the adaptive phenotypic plasticity of organisms, even at nonlethal concentrations. In Scenedesmaceae, a family of green algae, many chemicals interfere with defensive colony formation against grazers (i.e., through induced or limited coloniality). Although several studies have demonstrated that the effects of coloniality can limit the feeding capacity of Daphnia spp., grazing inhibition in other zooplankton species is not well understood. In this study, we examined the influence of sodium octyl sulfate (SOS) on the growth and morphology of Desmodesmus subspicatus and on the feeding rates of three cladoceran species (Daphnia galeata, Bosmina longirostris, and Bosmina fatalis) feeding on SOS-induced colonies under factorial conditions of different food levels and grazer ages. SOS remarkably induced colony formation with no observed effect on growth in D. subspicatus. D. galeata and B. fatalis showed a remarkable reduction in feeding rates when they fed on colonial D. subspicatus, whereas no significant effect of the prey morphotype was found on the feeding rates of B. longirostris. Microscopic observations of algal morphology after being grazed showed that each species can consume colonial prey depending on food level and age. Comparisons of the inhibition ratio of feeding among the three cladocerans revealed that Daphnia was more sensitive to prey coloniality compared with Bosmina. Our findings provide specific insights into the effects of chemically interfered colony formation on population dynamics and community structures.

A CaCuSi4O10/GCE electrochemical sensor for detection of norfloxacin in pharmaceutical formulations

This study reports on a calcium copper tetrasilicate (CaCuSi₄O₁₀)/glassy carbon electrode (GCE) electrochemical sensor developed for rapid sensing and quantification of an antibacterial drug, norfloxacin, using both cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The sensor was fabricated by modifying a glassy carbon electrode with the CaCuSi₄O₁₀. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed and the Nyquist plot showed that the CaCuSi₄O₁₀/GCE had a lower charge transfer resistance of 22.1 Ω cm² compared to the GCE with a charge transfer resistance of 43.5 Ω cm². Differential pulse voltammetry showed that the optimum pH for the electrochemical detection of norfloxacin in potassium phosphate buffer solution (PBS) electrolyte was pH 4.5 and an irreversible oxidative peak was found at 1.067 V. Two linear ranges were established at 0.01 to 0.55 μM and 0.55 μM to 82.1 μM, and the limit of detection was ca. 0.0046 μM. We further demonstrated that the electrochemical oxidation was controlled by both diffusion and adsorption processes. The sensor was investigated in the presence of interferents and was found to be selective toward norfloxacin. The pharmaceutical drug analysis was done to establish method reliability and a significantly low standard deviation of 2.3% was achieved. The results suggest that the sensor can be applied in the detection of norfloxacin.

Magnetic Fe3O4@ZIF-8 nanoparticles as a drug release vehicle: pH-sensitive release of norfloxacin and its antibacterial activity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a high specific surface area and inherent biodegradability due to their unique structure and composition. As well, owing to the properties of nanomaterials and especially their magnetic features, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and MOFs composite materials have great potential in the design and application of drug release. The present work: firstly, investigated norfloxacin loading in magnetic metal organic framework (Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8); and secondly, studied the release of norfloxacin and its antibacterial activity. Results showed the release efficiencies reached 97 % at 310 K after 84 h (pH 7.4). Drug release behavior was tested at various pH levels and it was found that Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 has pH-sensitive properties. Furthermore, the release model calculation illustrated that the release process fitted well to the Bhaskar model. The magnetic properties of Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 confirmed that the composite has potential application for a targeted drug delivery system. The mechanism of pH-responsive norfloxacin release was combined with diffusion, ion exchange and electrostatic repulsion. Furthermore, the antibacterial activities of Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 and NOR-Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 were tested against Escherichia coli. Results showed that Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 had good biocompatibility while NOR-Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 can deter or inhibit the actions of microorganisms.

Antibiotic Pollution of Planktonic Ecosystems: A Review Focused on Community Analysis and the Causal Chain Linking Individual- and Community-Level Responses

Antibiotic pollution has become one of the most challenging environmental issues in aquatic ecosystems, with adverse effects on planktonic organisms that occupy the base of the aquatic food chain. However, research regarding this topic has not been systematically reviewed, especially in terms of community-level responses. In this review, we provide an overview of current antibiotic pollution in aquatic environments worldwide. Then, we summarize recent studies concerning the responses of planktonic communities to antibiotics, ranging from individual- to community-level responses. Studies have shown that extremely high concentrations of antibiotics can directly harm the growth and survival of plankton; however, such concentrations are rarely found in natural freshwater. It is more likely that environmentally relevant concentrations of antibiotics will affect the physiological, morphological, and behavioral characteristics of planktonic organisms; influence interspecific interactions among plankton species via asymmetrical responses in species traits; and thus alter the structure and function of the entire planktonic ecosystem. This review highlights the importance of community analysis in revealing antibiotic toxicity. We also encourage the establishment of the causal relationships between impacts at multiple scales in the future for predicting the community-level consequences of antibiotics based on the currently available individual-level evidence.

Ecotoxicology of microplastics in Daphnia: A review focusing on microplastic properties and multiscale attributes of Daphnia

The ubiquitous presence of microplastics in aquatic environments is considered a global threat to aquatic organisms. Species of the genus Daphnia provide an important link between aquatic primary producers and consumers of higher trophic levels; furthermore, these organisms exhibit high sensitivity to various environmental pollutants. Hence, the biological effects of microplastics on Daphnia species are well documented. This paper reviews the latest research regarding the ecotoxicological effects of microplastics on Daphnia, including the: 1) responses of individual, population, and community attributes of Daphnia to microplastics; 2) influence of the physical and chemical properties of microplastics; and 3) joint toxicity of microplastics and other pollutants on responses of Daphnia. Our literature review found that the published literature does not provide sufficient evidence to reveal the risks of microplastics at the population and community levels. Furthermore, we emphasized that high-level analysis has more general implications for understanding how individual-level research can reveal the ecological hazards of microplastics on Daphnia. Based on this review, we suggest avenues for future research, including microplastic toxicology studies based on both omics-based and community-level methods, especially the latter.

A review of the adsorption method for norfloxacin reduction from aqueous media

Norfloxacin (NRFX) is one of a class of antibiotics known as broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is frequently used to treat infectious disorders in both animals and humans. NRFX is considered an emergent pharmaceutical contaminate. This review's objective is to evaluate empirical data on NRFX's removal from aqueous medium. The environmental danger of NRFX in the aquatic environment was validated by an initial ecotoxicological study. Graphene oxide/Metal Organic Framework (MOF) based composite, followed by Magnesium oxide/Chitosan/Graphene oxide composite gave the highest NRFX adsorption capacities (Qmax) of 1114.8 and 1000 mg/g, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms for NRFX uptake include electrostatic interactions, H-bonds, π-π interactions, electron donor-acceptor interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and pore diffusion. The adsorptive uptake of NRFX were most suitably described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order implying adsorbate-to-adsorbent electron transfer on a monolayer surface. The thermodynamics of NRFX uptake is heavily dependent on the makeup of the adsorbent, and the selection of the eluent for desorption from the solid phase is equally important. There were detected knowledge gaps in column studies and adsorbent disposal method. There's great interest in scale-up and industrial applications of research results that will aid in management of water resources for sustainability.

Fast peroxydisulfate oxidation of the antibiotic norfloxacin catalyzed by cyanobacterial biochar

Peroxydisulfate (PDS) is a common oxidant for organic contaminant remediation. PDS is typically activated by metal catalysts to generate reactive radicals. Unfortunately, as radicals are non-selective and metal catalysts may cause secondary contamination, alternative selective non-radical pathways and non-metal catalysts need attention. Here we investigated PDS oxidation of commonly detected antibiotic Norfloxacin (NOR) using cyanobacterial nitrogen rich biochars (CBs) as catalysts. NOR was fully degraded by CB pyrolysed at 950 °C (CB950) within 120 min. CB950 caused threefold faster degradation than low pyrolysis temperature (PT) CBs and achieved a maximum surface area normalized rate constant of 4.38 × 10^-2 min^-1 m^-2 L compared to widely used metal catalysts. CB950 maintained full reactivity after four repeated uses. High defluorination (82%) and mineralization (>82%) were observed for CB950/PDS. CBs were active over a broad pH range (3-10), but with twice as high rates under alkaline compared with neutral conditions. NOR is degraded by organic, ^•OH and SO₄^•- radicals in low PT CBs/PDS systems, where the presence of Mn^II promotes radical generation. Electron transfer reactions with radicals supplemented dominate high PT CBs/PDS systems. This study demonstrates high PT biochars from algal bloom biomass may find use as catalysts for organic contaminant oxidation.

Microplastics can affect the trophic cascade strength and stability of plankton ecosystems via behavior-mediated indirect interactions

The negative effects of microplastics on the normal growth of aquatic organisms have been well studied, but relatively little is known about their potential adverse effects on the function and stability of aquatic ecosystems. We investigated here the effects of polyethylene (PE) microplastics on several aspects of plankton ecosystems, including Daphnia magna behavior, the grazing rate of D. magna on Chlorella vulgaris cells, trophic-cascade effects in the C. vulgaris-D. magna-larval damselfly food chain, the life-history of D. magna, and the stability and persistence of the D. magna-larval damselfly system. PE microplastics decreased the D. magna grazing rate as a result of reductions in their heart rate and hopping frequency. In the trophic-cascade experiment, PE microplastics increased the foraging success of larval damselflies on grazers due to hopping inhibition in grazers, which ultimately strengthened the trophic-cascade effect on algal growth. Long-term exposure to PE microplastics reduced the stability and persistence of the grazer population via increased predation risk and reduced reproductive capacity for grazer species. This study provides evidence that microplastics can affect the trophic cascade strength and stability of plankton ecosystems via behavior-mediated indirect interactions, suggesting that microplastics have more extensive impacts on aquatic ecosystems than presently recognized. ENVIROMENTAL IMPLICATION: The massive production and environmental releasing of microplastics have become ubiquitous in the global environment. The negative effects of microplastics on the normal growth of aquatic organisms have been well studied, but little is known about potential adverse effects on the function and stability of aquatic ecosystems. Here, we found that microplastics increased the positive impacts of larval damselflies on algal growth, and reduced the stability and persistence of plankton ecosystems via a behavior-mediated indirect interaction. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic study assessing the effects of microplastics on the community-level characteristics of a freshwater ecosystem. SYNOPSIS: PE microplastics affect trophic cascade strength and reduce the stability and persistence of plankton ecosystems via behavior-mediated indirect interactions.

Azithromycin induces dual effects on microalgae: Roles of photosynthetic damage and oxidative stress

Antibiotics are frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, posing a potential threat to the freshwater environment. However, the response mechanism of freshwater microalgae to antibiotics remains inadequately understood. Here, the impacts of azithromycin (a broadly used antibiotic) on microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa were systematically studied. The results revealed that high concentrations (5-100 μg/L) of azithromycin inhibited algal growth, with a 96-h half maximal effective concentration of 41.6 μg/L. Azithromycin could weaken the photosynthetic activities of algae by promoting heat dissipation, inhibiting the absorption and trapping of light energy, impairing the reaction centre, and blocking electron transfer beyond Q_A. The blockage of the electron transport chain in the photosynthetic process further induced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The increases in the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and glutathione played important roles in antioxidant systems but were still not enough to scavenge the excessive ROS, thus resulting in the oxidative damage indicated by the elevated malondialdehyde level. Furthermore, azithromycin reduced the energy reserves (protein, carbohydrate and lipid) and impaired the cellular structure. In contrast, a hormesis effect on algal growth was found when exposed to low concentrations (0.5 and 1 μg/L) of azithromycin. Low concentrations of azithromycin could induce the activities of the PSII reaction centre by upregulating the mRNA expression of psbA. Additionally, increased chlorophyll b and carotenoids could improve the absorption of light energy and decrease oxidative damage, which further contributed to the increase in energy reserves (protein, carbohydrate and lipid). The risk quotients of azithromycin calculated in this study were higher than 1, suggesting that azithromycin could pose considerable ecological risks in real environments. The present work confirmed that azithromycin induced dual effects on microalgae, which provided new insight for understanding the ecological risk of antibiotics.

Anthropogenic activities change the relationship between microbial community taxonomic composition and functional attributes

Functional redundancy is considered common in microbial systems, but recent studies have challenged this idea. The mechanism for this contradictory result is not clear. However, in this study, we hypothesize that strong environmental filtering which links to the anthropogenic activities is able to weaken microbial functional redundancy. We used metagenome and 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing to investigate planktonic microbial communities in a subtropical river. We found that the weak anthropogenic activities might result in a low selection pressure in the river upstream area. Therefore, the microbial community functional attributes were stable although the community composition changed with the water temperature and NO₃ -N in upstream area (this indicates functional redundancy). However, the strong anthropogenic activities in river downstream area selected pollutant-degraded functions (e.g. nitrogen metabolism, toluene, xylenes and ethylbenzene degradation) and potentially pollutant-degraded (tolerant) microbes, and therefore caused the microbial community composition synchronously changed with the variation of community functional attributes. Our results reveal that strong environmental filtering which associates with the anthropogenic activities not only has effects on microbial community composition and community functional attributes but also on their relationships. These results provide a new insight to refine the functional redundancy idea.

Characteristics of phytoplankton-zooplankton communities and the roles in the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes under the pressure of river contamination

Insight into the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in phytoplankton-zooplankton communities (PZCs) is essential for the management and control of antibiotic resistance in aquatic ecosystems. This study characterized the profiles of PZCs and their carried ARGs in a typical urban river and ranked the factors (water physicochemical parameters, PZCs, bacterial abundance, and mobile genetic elements) influencing the dynamic of ARG profiles by the partial least squares path modeling. Results showed Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta were dominant phyla of phytoplankton, and Rotifera was with the highest abundance in zooplankton. River contamination markedly altered the structure of PZCs, increasing the abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton, decreasing the diversity of phytoplankton while elevating in zooplankton. PZCs harbored large amounts of ARGs with average relative abundance of 2.35 × 10^-2/copies nearly an order magnitude higher than the living water and most ARGs exhibited significant accumulation in PZCs with the aggravated environmental pollution. The partial least squares path modeling predicted the water parameters as the most important factor mainly playing indirect effects on ARGs via PZCs and bacterial communities, followed by mobile genetic elements as the most essential direct factor for ARGs profiles. Besides, PZCs were also important drivers for the carried ARGs via direct effects on the ARGs' composition and indirect effects on host bacterial communities of ARGs and their mobile genetic elements. The present study fills the gaps in knowledge about the distribution of ARGs in PZCs and provided a new perspective to decipher the key roles of PZCs in the maintenance and dissemination of ARGs in urban river ecosystems.

Light modulates the effect of antibiotic norfloxacin on photosynthetic processes of Microcystis aeruginosa

Norfloxacin is one of the widely used antibiotics, often detected in aquatic ecosystems, and difficultly degraded in the environment. However, how norfloxacin affects the photosynthetic process of freshwater phytoplankton is still largely unknown, especially under varied light conditions. In this study, we investigated photosynthetic mechanisms of Microcystis aeruginosa in responses to antibiotic norfloxacin (0-50 μg/L) for 72 h under low (LL; 50 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1) and high (HL; 250 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1) growth light regimes. We found that environmentally related concentrations of norfloxacin inhibited the growth rate and operational quantum yield of photosynthesis system II (PSII) of M. aeruginosa more under HL than under LL, suggesting HL increased the toxicity of norfloxacin to M. aeruginosa. Further analyses showed that norfloxacin deactivated PSII reaction centers under both growth light regimes with increased minimal fluorescence yields only under HL, suggesting that norfloxacin not only damaged reaction centers of PSII, but also inhibited energy transfer among phycobilisomes in M. aeruginosa under HL. However, non-photosynthetic quenching decreased in the studied species by norfloxacin exposure under both growth light regimes, suggesting that excess energy might not be efficiently dissipated as heat. Also, we found that reactive oxygen species (ROS) content increased under norfloxacin treatments with a higher ROS content under HL compared to LL. In addition, HL increased the absorption of norfloxacin by M. aeruginosa, which could partly explain the high sensitivity to norfloxacin of M. aeruginosa under HL. This study firstly reports that light can strongly affect the toxicity of norfloxacin to M. aeruginosa, and has vitally important implications for assessing the toxicity of norfloxacin to aquatic microorganisms.

Rapid modification of waste expanded polystyrene with H2SO4/trace persulfate in one pot for effective adsorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotic and its regeneration

Norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is widely used to treat microbial infections. However, untreated norfloxacin-containing wastewater poses serious threats to the ecosystem and human health. The treatment of waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) by landfilling or incineration could cause environmental problems. In this research, the feasibility of converting EPS into a valuable adsorbent for norfloxacin was evaluated. Results showed that EPS treated with H₂SO₄ (EPS_H2SO4) effectively adsorbed norfloxacin. The optimal sulfonation conditions were 95% H₂SO₄ and 100 °C. Addition of 0.001 M of persulfate during sulfonation obviously shortened the sulfonation time to 7.5 min, and the adsorption ability of modified EPS increased with increasing persulfate dose. Under the experimental conditions of 25 mg L^-1 norfloxacin, pH₀ 6.2, and 0.4 g L^-1 EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} (dry weight), 97.2% of norfloxacin could be removed after 30 min of adsorption. The adsorption ability of EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} decreased with increasing solution pH₀, and the optimal pH₀ was 6.2. The Langmuir isotherm best described the adsorption behavior of EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} (q_max = 140.9 mg L^-1, b = 1.97 L mg^-1, R² = 0.9992). 1 M HCl effectively regenerated the exhausted EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} at the optimal solid/solution ratio of 8 g L^-1. EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} maintained excellent adsorption capacity (>80.9%) after eight adsorption-regeneration cycles.

Electrolysis-sulfate-reducing up-flow sludge bed-biological contact oxidation reactor for Norfloxacin removal from wastewater with high sulfate content

This study investigated the treatment of 100-mg/L Norfloxacin (NOR) wastewater containing high concentrations of sulfate through a combination of electrolysis, sulfate-reducing up-flow sludge bed (SRUSB), and biological contact oxidation reactor (BCOR) treatments. Results revealed that after 62 h, the reaction system had processed over 97% of the NOR. Additionally, electrolysis with sodium sulfate as the electrolyte transformed 87.8% of the NOR but only 33.5% of the total organic carbon (TOC). In the SRUSB, the TOC and SO₄^2- contents were simultaneously reduced by 87.4% and 95.6%, respectively, providing a stable environment to the BCOR. In the BCOR, 36.3% and 85.9% of the NOR and TOC were degraded. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis identified three possible degradation pathways under the attack of -OH during electrolysis, including defluorination, piperazinyl ring transformation, and quinolone ring transformation. Furthermore, the Illumina HiSeq sequencing results demonstrated that the sulfate-reducing bacteria (represented by Desulfobacter and Desulfobulbus) in the SRUSB and the sulfate-oxidizing bacteria (mainly consisting of Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria) in the BCOR played important roles in carbon chain oxidation and benzene ring opening and thoroughly degraded the electrolysis products. Thus, this method effectively overcomes the incomplete degradation and low removal efficiency issues associated with single electrolysis or biological methods in traditional processes.

Susceptibility of phytoplankton to the increasing presence of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the aquatic environment: A review

Human and veterinary pharmaceuticals either in the form of un-metabolized, incompletely metabolized, and metabolized drugs are increasingly present in aquatic ecosystems. These active pharmaceutical ingredients from pharmaceutical industries, hospitals, agricultural, and domestic discharges find their way into water systems - where they adversely affect non-target organisms like phytoplankton. Different aspects of phytoplankton life; ranging from growth, reproduction, morphology, physiology, biochemical composition, oxidative response, proteomics, and transcriptomics are altered by pharmaceuticals. This review discusses the currently available information on the susceptibility of phytoplankton to the ever-increasing presence of pharmaceutical products in the aquatic environment by focusing on the effect of APIs on the physiology, metabolome, and proteome profiles of phytoplankton. We also highlight gaps in literature concerning the salient underlining biochemical interactions between phytoplankton communities and pharmaceuticals that require an in-depth investigation. This is all in a bid to understand the imminent dangers of the contamination of water bodies with pharmaceutical products and how this process unfavorably affects aquatic food webs.

Performance of Daphnia magna on flour, leaves, and pollen from different maize lines: Implications for risk assessment of genetically engineered crops

Non-target effects of genetically engineered (GE) plants on aquatic Daphnia magna have been studied by feeding the species with different maize materials containing insecticidal Cry proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). The results of those studies were often difficult to interpret, because only one GE plant was compared to one related non-GE control. In such a setting, effects of the Cry proteins cannot be distinguished from plant background effects, in particular when the test species is nutritionally stressed. In the present study, we tested the suitability of three different maize materials, i.e., flour, leaves and pollen, from five diverse non-GE maize lines (including EXP 258, a breeding line that is closely related to a SmartStax Bt maize) as exclusive food sources for D. magna. The parameters recorded included survival, sublethal endpoints such as body size, number of moltings to first offspring, time to first offspring, number of individuals in first clutch, total number of clutches, total number of offspring, average number of offspring per clutch, and population measures such as net reproductive rate R₀, generation time T and intrinsic rate of increase r_m. The results showed that D. magna can survive, grow and reproduce when fed only maize materials, although the performance was poorer than when fed algae, which indicates nutritional stress. Large differences in life table and population parameters of D. magna were observed among the different maize lines. Our results suggest that confounding effects caused by nutritional stress and plant background might explain some of the conflicting results previously published on the effects of Bt crops on D. magna. Using 95% confidence intervals for the means of the five maize lines for all measured parameters of D. magna performance in our study, we captured the natural range of variation. This information is useful for the interpretation of observed differences in D. magna performance between a GE plant and its non-GE comparator as it helps judging whether observed effects are of biological relevance. If differences between a GE and comparator line are observed and their biological relevance needs to be assessed in future risk assessments of GE maize, 1) the data on natural variation of the different parameters generated by previous studies can be informative (e.g. data from our study for maize fed D. magna); 2) for additional experiments the inclusion of multiple unrelated non-GE comparators should be considered; In addition, it should be taken into account that nutritional stress can affect the outcome of the study.

Antibiotic pollution promotes dominance by harmful cyanobacteria: A case study examining norfloxacin exposure in competition experiments

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in freshwater lakes across the globe are often combined with other stressors. Pharmaceutical pollution, especially antibiotics in water bodies, poses a potential hazard in aquatic ecosystems. However, how antibiotics influence the risk of cyanoHABs remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of norfloxacin (NOR), one of the most widely used antibiotics globally, to a bloom-forming cyanobacterium (Microcystis aeruginosa) and a common green alga (Scenedesmus quadricauda), under both mono- and coculture conditions. Taxon-specific responses to NOR were evaluated in monoculture. In addition, the growth rate and change in ratio of cyanobacteria to green algae when cocultured with exposure to NOR were determined. In monocultures of Microcystis, exposure to low concentrations of NOR resulted in decreases in biomass, chlorophyll a and soluble protein content, while superoxide anion content and superoxide dismutase activity increased. However, NOR at high concentration only slightly affected Scenedesmus. During the co-culture trials of Microcystis and Scenedesmus, the 5 μg · L^-1 NOR treatment increased the ratio of Microcystis to co-cultured Scenedesmus by 47.2%. Meanwhile, although Scenedesmus growth was enhanced by 4.2% under NOR treatment in monoculture, it was conversely inhibited by 63.4% and 38.2% when co-cultured with Microcystis with and without NOR, respectively. Our results indicate that antibiotic pollution has a potential risk to enhance the perniciousness of cyanoHABs by disturbing interspecific interaction between cyanobacteria and green algae. These results reinforce the need for scientists and managers to consider the influence of xenobiotics in shaping the outcome of interactions among multiple species in aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of norfloxacin on decomposition and nutrient release in leaves of the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara

It is well known that antibiotic residuals affect the composition and structure of microbial communities. However, the consequences of these biological changes in terms of ecosystem function remain poorly understood, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. Here, we investigated the impacts of norfloxacin (NOR, 0, 0.5, and 8 mg L^-1), a widely used antibiotic, on the microbial community structure on leaf surfaces of the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans, and the corresponding variations in litter decomposition, litter nutrient release, and water properties. Results showed that after 40 days of exposure, bacterial richness consistently decreased with increasing NOR concentration, and that richness of fungi was significantly lower in treatments adding NOR than in the control treatment. Moreover, NOR shifted the community toward NOR resistant phyla and genera, especially in the bacteria community. These community shifts resulted in the inhibition of litter decomposition and nutrient release from leaf litter to system water, accompanied by increases in dissolved oxygen concentration and pH of system water. Our results indicate that, by affecting microbial communities, NOR had significant effects on litter decomposition, litter nutrient release, and water properties, highlighting the potential harmful effects of NOR on aquatic ecosystem function.

Impact of Phytoplankton Blooms on Concentrations of Antibiotics in Sediment and Snails in a Subtropical River, China

The present three-year field investigation on sediment in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China showed that concentrations of sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), and macrolides (MLs) in the river areas where blooms occurred were 4.6, 2.4, and 3.4 times higher than those without blooms, respectively, but the respective concentrations of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in the areas with blooms were 2.6 and 3.8 times lower than those without. Significant positive correlations were found between concentrations of chlorophyll a in water and most antibiotics in sediment. Further investigation in each season suggested that lower diffusion but higher sinking were possible reasons driving the burial of sulfapyridine (SPD), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and trimethoprim (TMP) in sediment from areas where blooms occurred, with burial rates up to 14.86, 48.58, and 52.19 g month^-1, respectively. Concentrations of TCs in both water and sediment were inversely correlated with phytoplankton biomass, which might be related to the enhanced biodegradation capacity of bacteria caused by phytoplankton blooms. Phytoplankton also affected concentrations of antibiotics in the snail, Bellamya purificata, with higher values in March but lower values in September. The concentration of antibiotics in snails positively correlated with that in sediment when snails were dormant but with antibiotics in water after dormancy.

A novel soft sensor based warning system for hazardous ground-level ozone using advanced damped least squares neural network

Estimation of hazardous air pollutants in the urban environment for maintaining public safety is a significant concern to mankind. In this paper, we have developed an efficient air quality warning system based on a low-cost and robust ground-level ozone soft sensor. The soft sensor was developed based on a novel technique of damped least squares neural network (DLSNN) with greedy backward elimination (GBE) for the estimation of hazardous ground-level ozone. Only three meteorological factors were used as input variables in the estimation of ground-level ozone and we have used weighted k-nearest neighbors (WkNN) classifier with fast response for development of air quality warning system. We have chosen the urban areas of Taiwan for this study and have analyzed seasonal variations in the ground-level ozone concentration of various cities in Taiwan as part of this work. Moreover, descriptive statistics and linear dependence of ozone concentration based on Spearman correlation coefficient, Kendall's tau coefficient, and Pearson coefficient are calculated. The proposed DLSNN/GBE method exhibited excellent performance resulting in very low mean square error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and high coefficient of determination (R²) compared to other traditional approaches in ozone concentration estimation. We have achieved a good fit in the determination of ozone concentration from meteorological features of atmosphere. Moreover, the excellent performance of proposed urban air quality warning system was evident from the good F1-score value of 0.952 achieved by the WkNN classifier.

Effect of norfloxacin on algae-cladoceran grazer-larval damselfly food chains: Algal morphology-mediated trophic cascades

Antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) has recently been demonstrated to affect the swimming behavior of zooplankton species and phytoplankton-zooplankton interactions, which may further affect trophic cascades. To test this hypothesis, two food chains (Scenedesmus quadricauda-Daphnia magna-larval damselfly and Chlorella vulgaris-D. magna-larval damselfly) were used to examine the effect of NOR concentrations (0, 0.5, 5, and 25 mg L^-1) on trophic cascades. In the absence of NOR, larval damselflies reduced grazer density and increased algal density, regardless of algal species. In the presence of NOR, increasing NOR concentration strengthened the positive effect of larval damselflies on the growth of C. vulgaris because larval damselflies suppressed grazer density more efficiently resulting from reduced swimming ability in the grazers. Conversely, increasing NOR concentration reduced the positive effect on the growth of S. quadricauda due to inhibited grazer-induced colony formation in S. quadricauda. Therefore, exposure to NOR altered the direction and strength of trophic cascades and showed species-specific differences, depending on algal morphology-mediated indirect interactions. These findings provide novel insights into how NOR affects aquatic food chains and reveal the importance of algal traits in determining trophic cascades.
