Nutritional status of school-age children (5-19 years) in South Asia: A scoping review

Information on malnutrition for school-age children and adolescents (5-19 years) in South Asia is fragmented and inconsistent, which limits the prioritization of nutrition policies, programmes and research for this age group. This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the burden of malnutrition for children and adolescents aged 5-19 years in South Asia, and on interventions to improve their nutritional status. Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline and Google Scholar were systematically searched for articles published between January 2016 and November 2022. Eligible studies reported the prevalence of undernutrition, overweight/obesity, micronutrient deficiencies and unhealthy dietary intakes, and interventions that aimed to address these in South Asia. In total, 296 articles met our inclusion criteria. Evidence revealed widespread, yet heterogeneous, prevalence of undernutrition among South Asian children and adolescents: thinness (1.9%-88.8%), wasting (3%-48%), underweight (9.5%-84.4%) and stunting (3.7%-71.7%). A triple burden of malnutrition was evident: the prevalence of overweight and obesity ranged from 0.2% to 73% and 0% to 38% (with rapidly rising trends), respectively, alongside persistent micronutrient deficiencies. Diets often failed to meet nutritional requirements and high levels of fast-food consumption were reported. Education, fortification, supplementation and school feeding programmes demonstrated beneficial effects on nutritional status. Comprehensive and regular monitoring of all forms of malnutrition among children and adolescents, across all countries in South Asia is required. Further, more large-scale intervention research is needed to ensure policy and programmes effectively target and address malnutrition among children and adolescents in South Asia.

Briefings in surgical teams: a pilot study of experiences and attitudes

While healthcare should not be compared to other high reliability organisations (HROs), many lessons, attitudes, and transferable practices can be applied and adapted from them to improve patient safety and team morale. Despite briefings improving both patient safety and effective team working, some in healthcare have not valued or actively engaged with them, deeming them to be irrelevant. In this pilot study we explored the experiences of, and attitudes to, briefings using a 10-question Survey Monkey. This was promoted during a human factors session at the 2023 Association of Surgeons in Training Conference (ASiT) and at a large NHS trust. Questions were asked about the number of briefings per day, attitudes, engagement, and respondents' attitudes to them. In total, 109 responses were received. A total of 85% reported at least one briefing on a normal operating day, 65% felt them to be interactive, 67% reported that briefings were led by the most senior surgical team member, and 58% lasted four minutes or more. Eighteen per cent of respondents felt they were of little benefit, and 56% did not routinely de-brief at the end of the day. This study has highlighted variable attitudes to team briefings, with some colleagues still seeing them as a 'tick box' exercise. While culture has changed following the introduction of the WHO checklist, the importance of active engagement and education to improve the delivery and value of effective briefings cannot be overestimated. It is also an opportunity to create a 'safe space' for team members and to confirm zero tolerance for any inappropriate behaviour, including sexual misconduct.

Integrating Women and Girls' Nutrition Services into Health Systems in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review

Women's nutrition has been highlighted as a global priority to ensure the health and well-being of both them and future generations. This systematic review summarises the available literature on the integration of nutrition services for girls and women of reproductive age (GWRA) into existing public health systems across low- and middle-income countries, as well as any barriers to integration. We searched PubMed and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for articles published since 2011 according to eligibility criteria. A total of 69 articles were included. Evidence suggested that several services for GWRA are well integrated into public health systems, including antenatal care services, nutrition education and counselling, and micronutrient supplementation programmes. However, there was limited evidence on the integration of family planning, adolescent health, and reproductive health services. Barriers to integration fell into five main themes: lack of training and capacity building, poor multisectoral linkages and coordination, weak advocacy, lack of M&E systems, and inequity. We identified a lack of evidence and services for non-pregnant GWRA and for women postpartum. Addressing barriers to integration and gaps in nutrition services for GWRA would increase service coverage and contribute to improving health outcomes for GWRA and future generations.

Maternal-focused interventions to improve infant growth and nutritional status in low-middle income countries: A systematic review of reviews

BACKGROUND

Small and nutritionally at-risk infants under 6 months (<6m) are a vulnerable group at increased risk of mortality, morbidity, poor growth and sub-optimal development. Current national and international (World Health Organization) management guidelines focus mainly on infants' needs, yet growing evidence suggests that maternal factors also influence infant outcomes. We aimed to inform future guidelines by exploring the impacts of maternal-focused interventions on infant feeding and growth.

METHODS

We conducted a systematic review of reviews published since 2008 (PROSPERO, register number CRD 42019141724). We explored five databases and a wide variety of maternal-focused interventions based in low- and middle-income countries. Infant outcomes of interest included anthropometric status, birthweight, infant mortality, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. Given heterogenous interventions, we present a narrative synthesis of the extracted data.

RESULTS

We included a total of 55 systematic reviews. Numerous maternal interventions were effective in improving infant growth or feeding outcomes. These included breastfeeding promotion, education, support and counselling interventions. Maternal mental health, while under-researched, showed potential to positively impact infant growth. There was also some evidence for a positive impact of: women's empowerment, m-health technologies, conditional cash transfers, water, sanitation and hygiene and agricultural interventions. Effectiveness was increased when implemented as part of a multi-sectoral program. Antenatal supplementation with macronutrient, multiple micronutrients, Vitamin D, zinc, iron folic acid and possibly calcium, iodine and B12 in deficient women, improved birth outcomes. In contrast, evidence for postnatal supplementation was limited as was evidence directly focusing on small and nutritionally at-risk infants; most reviews focused on the prevention of growth faltering.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest sufficient evidence to justify greater inclusion of mothers in more holistic packages of care for small and nutritionally at-risk infants aged <6m. Context specific approaches are likely needed to support mother-infant dyads and ensure infants survive and thrive.

Assessment of differentially methylated loci in individuals with end-stage kidney disease attributed to diabetic kidney disease: an exploratory study

BACKGROUND

A subset of individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are predisposed to developing diabetic kidney disease (DKD), the most common cause globally of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Emerging evidence suggests epigenetic changes in DNA methylation may have a causal role in both T1DM and DKD. The aim of this exploratory investigation was to assess differences in blood-derived DNA methylation patterns between individuals with T1DM-ESKD and individuals with long-duration T1DM but no evidence of kidney disease upon repeated testing to identify potential blood-based biomarkers. Blood-derived DNA from individuals (107 cases, 253 controls and 14 experimental controls) were bisulphite treated before DNA methylation patterns from both groups were generated and analysed using Illumina's Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip arrays (n = 862,927 sites). Differentially methylated CpG sites (dmCpGs) were identified (false discovery rate adjusted p ≤ × 10^-8 and fold change ± 2) by comparing methylation levels between ESKD cases and T1DM controls at single site resolution. Gene annotation and functionality was investigated to enrich and rank methylated regions associated with ESKD in T1DM.

RESULTS

Top-ranked genes within which several dmCpGs were located and supported by functional data with methylation look-ups in other cohorts include: AFF3, ARID5B, CUX1, ELMO1, FKBP5, HDAC4, ITGAL, LY9, PIM1, RUNX3, SEPTIN9 and UPF3A. Top-ranked enrichment pathways included pathways in cancer, TGF-β signalling and Th17 cell differentiation.

CONCLUSIONS

Epigenetic alterations provide a dynamic link between an individual's genetic background and their environmental exposures. This robust evaluation of DNA methylation in carefully phenotyped individuals has identified biomarkers associated with ESKD, revealing several genes and implicated key pathways associated with ESKD in individuals with T1DM.

Critical care usage after major gastrointestinal and liver surgery: a prospective, multicentre observational study

BACKGROUND

Patient selection for critical care admission must balance patient safety with optimal resource allocation. This study aimed to determine the relationship between critical care admission, and postoperative mortality after abdominal surgery.

METHODS

This prespecified secondary analysis of a multicentre, prospective, observational study included consecutive patients enrolled in the DISCOVER study from UK and Republic of Ireland undergoing major gastrointestinal and liver surgery between October and December 2014. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore associations between critical care admission (planned and unplanned) and mortality, and inter-centre variation in critical care admission after emergency laparotomy.

RESULTS

Of 4529 patients included, 37.8% (n=1713) underwent planned critical care admissions from theatre. Some 3.1% (n=86/2816) admitted to ward-level care subsequently underwent unplanned critical care admission. Overall 30-day mortality was 2.9% (n=133/4519), and the risk-adjusted association between 30-day mortality and critical care admission was higher in unplanned [odds ratio (OR): 8.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.51-19.97) than planned admissions (OR: 2.32, 95% CI: 1.43-3.85). Some 26.7% of patients (n=1210/4529) underwent emergency laparotomies. After adjustment, 49.3% (95% CI: 46.8-51.9%, P<0.001) were predicted to have planned critical care admissions, with 7% (n=10/145) of centres outside the 95% CI.

CONCLUSIONS

After risk adjustment, no 30-day survival benefit was identified for either planned or unplanned postoperative admissions to critical care within this cohort. This likely represents appropriate admission of the highest-risk patients. Planned admissions in selected, intermediate-risk patients may present a strategy to mitigate the risk of unplanned admission. Substantial inter-centre variation exists in planned critical care admissions after emergency laparotomies.

Antismoking Social Norms Increase Cessation Behaviours Among Lower and Higher SES Smokers: An Australian Population-Based Study

Background: Disapproval of smoking from close others, observation of others' quitting activity and denormalisation of smoking in the broader community can provide an environment that helps smokers to quit. However, it remains unclear which social norms have the greatest influence, and if there is a similar impact on quitting-related cognitions and behaviors among lower and higher socioeconomic status (SES) smokers. Aim: This study sought to examine the influence on quitting-related cognitions and behaviors of a variety of social norms: subjective (perceived disapproval of smoking among close family and friends); internalized injunctive (feeling embarrassed about being a smoker); and close descriptive norms (living in a household with someone who, successfully or unsuccessfully, tried to quit in the past 12 months). Methods: A telephone survey was conducted among 1454 Australian adult smokers between 2012 and 2014 who were followed-up ∼1 week after the baseline interview. Logistic regression analyses examined prospective associations of baseline social norms with quitting-related cognitions and behaviors at follow-up. Analyses were adjusted for baseline demographic characteristics, addiction level, tobacco control policies (cost increases, plain packaging implementation and mass media campaign exposure) and quitting-related outcomes measured at baseline. Differences in associations between lower and higher SES smokers (based on educational attainment and area-based disadvantage) were examined through interaction terms and stratified analyses. Results: Sixty-three percent of participants perceived disapproval from family and friends, 30% felt embarrassed to be a smoker, and 12% lived with a recent quitter. Baseline disapproval, embarrassment and household quitting activity were each associated with having quitting as a high priority and with setting a firm date to quit in the next month. Both disapproval and embarrassment also predicted engaging in behaviors to limit smoking, and only embarrassment was associated with increased likelihood to talk about quitting with family or friends and to make a quit attempt. No associations were found between social norms and being highly confident to quit and seeking help to quit. Associations were mostly comparable for lower and higher SES smokers, with no significant negative effects of social norms on quitting thoughts and behaviors overall or among subgroups. Conclusion: Within the strong tobacco control environment in Australia, smokers from lower and higher SES groups who perceive that their family and friends disapprove of their smoking, feel embarrassed to be a smoker and/or who live in a household with a recent quitter are more likely to prioritize quitting and intend to quit soon. These findings also indicate that the internalized injunctive social norm (i.e., feeling embarrassed) was the strongest predictor of smokers' quitting related behaviors, including making a quit attempt.

Distributed expertise: qualitative study of a British network of multidisciplinary teams supporting parents of children with chronic kidney disease

BACKGROUND

Long-term childhood conditions are often managed by hospital-based multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) of professionals with discipline specific expertise of a condition, in partnership with parents. However, little evidence exists on professional-parent interactions in this context. An exploration of professionals' accounts of the way they individually and collectively teach parents to manage their child's clinical care at home is, therefore, important for meeting parents' needs, informing policy and educating novice professionals. Using chronic kidney disease as an exemplar this paper reports on one aspect of a study of interactions between professionals and parents in a network of 12 children's kidney units in Britain.

METHODS

We conducted semi-structured, qualitative interviews with a convenience sample of 112 professionals (clinical-psychologists, dietitians, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, play-workers, therapists and social workers), exploring accounts of their parent-educative activity. We analysed data using framework and the concept of distributed expertise.

RESULTS

Four themes emerged that related to the way expertise was distributed within and across teams: (i) recognizing each other's' expertise, (ii) sharing expertise within the MDT, (iii) language interpretation, and (iv) acting as brokers. Two different professional identifications were also seen to co-exist within MDTs, with participants using the term 'we' both as the intra-professional 'we' (relating to the professional identity) when describing expertise within a disciplinary group (for example: 'As dietitians we aim to give tailored advice to optimize children's growth'), and the inter-professional 'we' (a 'team-identification'), when discussing expertise within the team (for example: 'We work as a team and make sure we're all happy with every aspect of their training before they go home').

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlights the dual identifications implicit in 'being professional' in this context (to the team and to one's profession) as well as the unique role that each member of a team contributes to children's care. Our methodology and results have the potential to be transferred to teams managing other conditions.

“IT’S MORE THAN A PILL DROP”: ADHERENCE SUPPORT AND THE CLINICAL GAZE IN INNER CITY HOME-BASED HIV CARE

Background:Home-based HIV care has been identified as means of improving access to HIV care and reducing HIV-related stigma, while easing overload in facility-based care and providing cost effective community-based social supports. Few evaluations, however, focus on the impactof barriers such as homelessness, imprisonment and substance abuse to the continuity of this model of health care provision. This paper examines the challenges, strategies, and outcomes of a long-standing home-based HIV nursingprogram from a Foucauldian analytic perspective. Methods: Findings are presented from the evaluation of a home care nursing team providing HIV care to unstably housed individuals in Vancouver’s inner city. Employing ethnographic methodology, participant observation was conducted over nine months, along with serial open-ended qualitative interviews with the nursing team (n=4) and home care clients (n=16). Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed; an interpretive thematic analysis of field notes and interview transcripts was conducted. Results: Although adherence to antiretroviral therapy was consistent over the study course, men and women’s responses to care varied over time. Nurses who were sensitive to the ways in which enhanced surveillance within the private sphere of participants’ lives was cause for resistance to care employed a number of strategies to maintain these relationships. Variability among nurses regarding local (i.e. street) knowledge, along with understandings of what constitutes appropriate supportive measures, also impacted participants’ responses to care. Conclusions: The type and extent of support services is continually negotiated between nurses and participants, creating a potential source of tension between the guiding of health-related decisions and participants’ constitution of themselves as autonomous. Foucault’s concept of governmentality is applicable here, and may elucidate how norms, capacities and subjectivities are mutually created through its processes. The findings support an understanding of autonomy that is interpersonally, as well as institutionally, relational. Successful programming requires careful attention to the everyday experiences of participants, facilitated by continuity of providers andmentorship for newer nurses engaging in home-based HIV care. In the first of a three-part series on the role of nursing in care-centered organizations, the authors describe the thinking and process that lead to the creation of care centers and related governance structures. They explore the rationale for the establishment of care centers, describe the process for determining governance structures, and examine the changing role of nurse executives in a large academic medical center reorganized around care centers.

Performance of a new blood pressure monitor in children and young adults: the difficulties in clinical validation

The aim of this study was to assess the performance of a new ambulatory blood pressure monitor (Dynapulse 5000A) in children and young adults. The reference methods, i.e. the mercury-Doppler (Hg-D) method of blood-pressure measurement (recommended for less than 5-year-old children by the British Hypertension Society criteria) and the mercury-auscultation (Hg-A) technique (recommended for 5 years and above) were initially compared utilizing 132 concomitant systolic blood pressure (SBP) readings taken among 44 subjects (3 in each) aged 2-30 years. Hg-D over-read SBP above that of the conventional Hg-A by a mean of 5.25 mmHg (95% confidence interval (CI) 4.11, 6.4). This difference in measurement between the two techniques was also significantly (p = 0.01) related to age. [Difference in mmHg = 7.83 (95% CI 5.53, 10.12) -0.30 (95% CI -0.54, -0.07) age in years.] The Dynapulse 5000A was therefore validated only against Hg-D throughout the age range and was undertaken utilizing 468 concomitant resting SBP measurements taken among 59 subjects (supine or sitting) using a 'T' system. The Dynapulse was found to give higher SBP readings (average 13.5 mmHg) than Hg-D sphygmomanometry. Although the differences were not dependent on the age of the child, the pulse rate or the body mass index, there was a significant drift in the differences with time (-0.05 mmHg/day). Repeatability of each of the measurement methods calculated utilizing two or three consecutive recordings taken at 1-min intervals showed that variability between repeated measurements made with the Dynapulse (14.8%) was greater than for Hg-D. Repeatability coefficient of the Hg-D (11.2%) was also less than ideal for a reference method. We conclude that Dynapulse 5000A over-reads SBP above that detected by Hg-D, but cannot be fairly graded by British Hypertension Society criteria due to the inconsistency and poor repeatability of the recommended reference methods.

Interaction between accessory pathways resulting in inability to induce reciprocating tachycardia

A 44-year old male with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome presented with atrial fibrillation. The patient was found at the electrophysiological study to have two accessory pathways, one concealed and the other conducting exclusively in the anterograde direction. After radiofrequency catheter ablation of the anterograde conducting pathway, orthodromic reciprocating tachycardia, which previously could not be induced despite an aggressive protocol, was easily induced. Ablation of the concealed pathway resulted in termination of the tachycardia and suppression of inducibility. We propose that interaction between the two accessory pathways resulted in an inability to induce reciprocating tachycardia.

The Antiozonant Ethylenediurea Does Not Act via Superoxide Dismutase Induction in Bean

It has been proposed that the mode of action of ethylenediurea, a very effective antiozonant, is via an increase in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (EH Lee, JH Bennett [1982] Plant Physiol 69: 1444-1449). Data presented here refute that hypothesis. No ethylenediurea-associated increases in Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase or Mn-superoxide dismutase activity, nor in steady-state Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase protein levels, were found in soluble extracts of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Bush Blue Lake 290) leaves. However, the cytosolic Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase increased as a result of ozone fumigation and subsequent injury. Also noted was a developmentally related difference between chloroplastic and cytosolic Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, the latter declining during maturation of the leaf.

Dominant role for osmolality in the efficacy of glucose and glycine-containing oral rehydration solutions: studies in a rat model of secretory diarrhoea

The effect of osmolality on the efficacy of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and the contribution of the amino acid glycine to water absorption from ORS have been studied in an animal model of secretory diarrhoea. After exposure to pure cholera toxin, rat small intestine (excluding the duodenum) was perfused in situ with seven different ORS. All ORS were derived from a "basic" solution containing Na 50, K 25, Cl 75 and glucose 50 mmol/l to which 25 or 50 mmol/l of glycine, glucose, or mannitol was added. All ORS reversed water secretion to absorption, but maximum water absorption was obtained with the "basic" solution with an osmolality of 200 mOsm/kg. When the osmolality of the "basic" solution was raised to 225 and 250 mOsm/kg by adding mannitol, water absorption decreased. At each of these osmolalities, substitution of mannitol by glycine or glucose resulted in similar increases in water absorption, but all modifications compared unfavourably with the "basic" solution. Net sodium secretion occurred with all ORS tested, despite net water absorption. These findings in a perfusion model of rat small intestine suggest that osmolality is a key factor influencing the efficacy of ORS and that addition of a second substrate, such as glycine, has no beneficial effects. Our results suggest that there is a maximal rate for water absorption from the small intestine which is inversely related to the osmolality of the perfusate.

Overproduction of petunia chloroplastic copper/zinc superoxide dismutase does not confer ozone tolerance in transgenic tobacco

Transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cultivar W38) plants that overproduce petunia chloroplastic Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase were exposed to ozone dosages that injure control tobacco plants. Based on foliar injury ratings, there was no consistent protection provided to the transgenic plants. These data indicate that an increase in the chloroplastic Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase alone is not sufficient to reduce ozone toxicity.

The relationship between EDU pre-treatment and C2H4 evolution in ozonated pea plants

A soil drench of [Formula: see text] (EDU) (150 ppm) applied to 'Progress No. 9' pea plants 24 h before an acute ozone exposure (0.25 ppm, 4 h) completely protected the foliage from visible symptoms normally induced by the pollutant. In the absence of ozone, EDU-treated plants were found to emit the same amount of C(2)H(4) as plants not treated with EDU. Based on this evidence, EDU-induced tolerance to ozone could not have been attributed to the prevention of an interaction between ethylene and ozone (sensu Mehlhorn and Wellburn). In the presence of ozone, EDU-treated plants did not emit the burst of C(2)H(4) that normally occurs (sensu Craker), extending the observation that EDU-treated plants do not exhibit the adverse physiological responses normally caused by ozone. The classic C(2)H(4) biosynthesis inhibitor aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) did not prevent ozone phytotoxicity, although it significantly reduced ethylene emission from the ozonated tissue.

The relationship between foliar injury, nitrogen metabolism, and growth parameters in ozonated soybeans

A single 12 h ozone exposure peaking at 0.20 ppm proved phytotoxic to greenhouse-grown 'Cutler 71' soybeans at each growth stage tested from V5 to R6. Visible injury occurred within 40 h on the unifoliodate leaves and middle-aged and older trifoliolates while the younger leaves were free from toxicity symptoms. In some instances visible injury was accompanied by a decrease in chlorophyll and an increase in leaf diffusive resistance. Although nitrogen fixation was not significantly altered except at early pod formation (R3), and nitrate reductase activity was significantly reduced only if the ozone exposure occurred at the time of maximal enzyme activity (V5), nitrogen content of the leaves was reduced by ozone treatment. Shoot dry weight was not affected 40 h after ozone treatment, but root dry weight was significantly reduced. Plants grown with supplemental NO(3)(-) were more sensitive to ozone than those dependent on fixed nitrogen. At plant maturity, there was no evidence of an ozone effect on shoot, root, or seed dry weight, NO(3)(-) -grown plants showed a significant increase in growth and yield over N(2)(-) plants; but no ozone effect was observed, despite the increased foliar sensitivity. Multiple ozone exposures at growth stages V3, R1 and R3 exacerbated the effects noted with a single episode and also reduced nitrogenase activity (reflected in specific and total nodule activity) and shoot and root dry weight. At plant maturity, there was again no evidence of a significant effect of multiple ozone treatment on shoot dry weight or seed yield although root weight remained low. The results would tend to support the hypothesis that older leaves of soybean do not make a significant contribution to seed yield. Although they may be injured by ozone during the reproductive phases of growth, seed yield may not be affected if the younger O(3)-tolerant leaves remain functional.

The trace element content of hospital meals and potential low intake by elderly patients

The metabolizable energy, protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron and manganese contents of a typical day's menu offered to patients in a teaching hospital were analysed. Results obtained were compared with the appropriate UK Recommended Daily Amounts (RDA), or where no British standards were available, American Recommended Daily Dietary Allowances (RDDA) for magnesium, phosphorus and zinc and American Estimated Safe and Adequate Dietary Intakes (ESADI) for copper and manganese. Patients on an acute geriatric ward selected meals, which, even if consumed entirely, provided approximately half the daily recommended dietary allowances for zinc and copper, less than the recommended daily amounts for iron and magnesium, but more than adequate content of energy, protein, calcium, phosphorus and manganese.

Partial Characterization of a Cadmium-binding Protein from the Roots of Cadmium-treated Tomato

A Cd-binding protein has been isolated from the roots of Cd-treated tomato plants cv. Rutgers. Almost all the Cd from a high-speed supernatant fraction was recovered in a 10,000-dalton fraction from a gel filtration column coincident with 250-nanometer absorbing material. DEAE-cellulose chromatography of this 10,000-dalton material yielded one major component, which eluted at 0.34 molar NaCl, had an absorption spectrum characteristic of metallothionein, and showed absorption changes upon acidification typical of metallothionein. Although the Cd-binding protein did not behave like metallothioneins from animal sources during gel electrophoresis at pH 8.9, a single band containing Cd and staining with Coomassie brilliant blue could be detected following electrophoresis at pH 6.9. Synthesis of the Cd-binding protein appeared to be "induced" by treatment of the plants with Cd(2+).

Changes in respiration, photosynthesis, adenosine 5'-triphosphate, and total adenylate content of ozonated pinto bean foliage as they relate to symptom expression

The effect of 0.25 to 0.30 microliter per liter ozone on photosynthesis and respiration and on the ATP and total adenylate content of the primary leaves of pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was examined. Changes in these parameters over a 72-hour time period were correlated with the development of symptoms of ozone toxicity. Toxicity symptoms normally appeared within 24 hours. The content of ATP and total adenylates increased immediately following a 3-hour exposure to ozone. Photosynthesis was depressed initially, but returned to normal within 24 hours. Respiration was not always altered initially, but it was significantly stimulated within 24 hours. We interpret the results to mean that the changes in adenylate content and photosynthesis are early events in the initiation of ozone damage and that the change in respiration is a consequence rather than a cause of cellular injury.
