Abstract
Zebrafish Mate3 is one of six co-orthologs of human multidrug and toxin extrusion proteins. It is highly expressed in the kidneys, intestine, testes, and brain of males. Initial interaction studies showed its interaction with xenobiotic compounds, suggesting a role in the efflux of toxic compounds. In this study, we aimed to test various environmental contaminants for their interaction with zebrafish Mate3. We developed a stable zebrafish Mate3 cell line and optimized a high-throughput screening assay using DAPI and ASP+ as fluorescent model substrates. To gain insight into the structure and function of the Mate3 protein and relate these to the results of the DAPI and ASP+ transport measurements, we predicted its 3D structure using the AlphaFold2 algorithm. A 3D structure with high per residue confidence scores with 13 transmembrane segments (TMs) was obtained, with topology and mutual positioning characteristic of the Mate protein family in a shape open to the extracellular part. Molecular docking methods were used to identify DAPI and ASP+ binding sites on the surface and in the center of the protein cavity. Because our kinetics experiments combined with molecular docking indicated that there may be additional active sites in zebrafish Mate3, additional cytotoxicity experiments were performed and highly potent Mate3 interactors were identified from a set of 55 different environmental contaminants. Our results suggest that some of the identified interactors may be of environmental concern, as their interaction with Mate3 could lead to an impairment of its normal efflux function, making fish more sensitive to harmful substances commonly released into the aquatic environment. Finally, the quality of zebrafish Mate3 structures predicted by the AlphaFold2 algorithm opens up the possibility of successfully using this tool for in silico research on transport preferences of other Mate proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both insufficient and excessive iodine intake can lead to a broad range of disorders. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess iodine status in schoolchildren from Croatia. DESIGN 957 healthy 6 to 12-year-olds were enrolled (381 from northwestern region, 190 from eastern region, 215 from north Adriatic, and 171 from central Dalmatia region). Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was measured in spot urine samples. Thyroid volume (Tvol) was recorded by ultrasound device. Standard anthropometric measures were taken, and body surface area (BSA) was determined. Tvol medians were calculated as a function of age, sex and BSA and compared with reference values. RESULTS Total sample size included 490 boys and 467 girls. Overall median UIC was 250.68 µg/L, with statistically significant variance in geographical regions (median UIC was 244.71 µg/L in northwestern, 208.02 µg/L in eastern, 216.07 µg/L in north Adriatic and 366.43 µg/L in central Dalmatia region). There were 10.08% of samples with UIC < 100 mcg/L while 38.24% of samples had UIC > 300 mcg/L. Age-matched Tvol medians in schoolchildren from all regions of Croatia were at the upper limits of reference values, but in north Adriatic and central Dalmatia exceeded the 97th percentile. BSA-matched Tvol was within the reference range in all regions. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate sufficient (more than adequate) iodine intake in schoolchildren of Croatia, and excessive iodine intake in central Dalmatia region. Total thyroid volumes in schoolchildren of Croatia were within the normal range, however borderline enlarged age-matched thyroid glands were observed in coastal areas.

Abstract
The increasing use of the zebrafish model in biomedical and (eco)toxicological studies aimed at understanding the function of various proteins highlight the importance of optimizing existing methods to study gene and protein expression and localization in this model. In this context, zebrafish cryosections are still underutilized compared with whole-mount preparations. In this study, we used zebrafish embryos (24-120 hpf) to determine key factors for the preparation of high-quality zebrafish cryosections and to determine the optimal protocol for (immuno)fluorescence analyses of Na+ /K+ -ATPase and F-actin, across developmental stages from 1 to 5 dpf. The results showed that the highest quality zebrafish cryosections were obtained after the samples were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde (PFA) for 1 h, incubated in 2.5% bovine gelatin/25% sucrose mixture, embedded in OCT, and then sectioned to 8 μm thickness at -20°C. Fluorescence microscopy analysis of phalloidin-labeled zebrafish skeletal muscle revealed that 1-h-4% PFA-fixed samples allowed optimal binding of phalloidin to F-actin. Further immunofluorescence analyses revealed detailed localization of F-actin and Na+ /K+ -ATPase in various tissues of the zebrafish and a stage-dependent increase in their respective expression in the somitic muscles and pronephros. Finally, staining of zebrafish cryosections and whole-mount samples revealed organ-specific and zone-dependent localizations of the Na+ /K+ -ATPase α1-subunit. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: This study brings optimization of existing protocols for preparation and use of zebrafish embryos cryosections in (immuno)histological analyses. It reveals stage-dependent localization/expression of F-actin and Na+ /K+ -ATPase in zebrafish embryos.

Abstract
Socks, being a necessary item of clothing, must be comfortable and maintain their quality throughout their life. Since the applicability of modal fibers and microfibers, as well as yarns produced using unconventional processes, in sock knitting has been insufficiently researched, this paper evaluated three groups of medium sized socks knitted in a plain single jersey pattern produced with the highest percentage of ring, rotor and air-jet spun modal or micro modal yarns of the same linear density in full plating with different textured polyamide 6.6 yarns compared to conventional cotton socks. The sock quality was evaluated through an investigation of the physical properties, wear resistance and dimensional stability, as well as the water vapor absorption, air permeability and thermal resistance using the thermal foot model before and after five repeated washing and drying cycles, according to the proposed methodology. The results showed that the fiber fineness, the structure of the differently spun yarns and the sock plain knits, the polyamide content and the implementation of the pretreatment of the socks had an influence on the obtained results. The socks made from modal and micro modal yarns differed in their properties. Compared to cotton socks, they have better comfort properties, a generally better pilling resistance and, after pretreatment, a comparable abrasion resistance.

Abstract
Microcystins (MCs) are the most studied cyanotoxins. The uptake of MCs in cells and tissues of mammals and fish species is mostly mediated by organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs in humans and rodents; Oatps in other species), and the Oatp1d1 appears to be a major transporter for MCs in fish. In this study, six MC congeners of varying physicochemical properties (MC-LR, -RR, -YR, -LW, -LF, -LA) were tested by measuring their effect on the uptake of model Oatp1d1 fluorescent substrate Lucifer yellow (LY) in HEK293T cells transiently or stably overexpressing zebrafish Oatp1d1. MC-LW and -LF showed the strongest interaction resulting in an almost complete inhibition of LY transport with IC50 values of 0.21 and 0.26 μM, while congeners -LR, -YR and -LA showed lower inhibitory effects. To discern between Oatp1d1 substrates and inhibitors, results were complemented by Michaelis-Menten kinetics and chemical analytical determinations of MCs uptake, along with molecular docking studies performed using the developed zebrafish Oatp1d1 homology model. Our study showed that Oatp1d1-mediated transport of MCs could be largely dependent on their basic physicochemical properties, with log POW being the most obvious determinant. Finally, apart from determination of the chemical composition of cynobacterial blooms, a reliable risk assessment should take into account the interaction of identified MC congeners with Oatp1d1 as their primary transporter, and herewith we demonstrated that such a comprehensive approach could be based on the use of highly specific in vitro models, accompanied by chemical assessment and in silico molecular docking studies.

Abstract
The worldwide incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has increased in recent decades, likely due to frequent use of cervical ultrasonography (US) and US-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA)., US is performed during follow-up after thyroidectomy, and US-guided FNA with cytology is used if suspicious cervical lymph nodes (LN) or thyroid bed masses are detected. Knowing that serum anti-Tg antibodies (sTgAb) affect the use of serum Tg (sTg) as a tumor marker, the aim of our study was to assess the usefulness of Tg determination in needle aspirates (FNA-Tg) in presence of sTgAb. This retrospective study included 149 patients with DTC and 159 aspirations of suspicious LN and thyroid bed masses. As expected, there was a negative correlation between sTg and sTgAb levels (p<0.05), while FNA-Tg levels had a positive correlation with FNA-TgAb levels (p<0.05). Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between sTg and FNA-Tg levels (p<0.05), but not between sTgAb and FNA-TgAb or sTgAb and FNA-Tg. In conclusion, these results show that FNA-Tg values were not affected by sTgAb and that FNA-Tg measurement were highly effective in detecting cervical DTC metastases. However, combined use with cytology is suggested for neck evaluation because cytology could reveal metastases from other tumor sites.

Abstract
Organic anion transporters (OATs) are transmembrane proteins which belong to SLC22 subfamily. They are responsible for the uptake of various endo- and xenobiotics into the cells of different organs and tissues. Following our previous work on characterization of zebrafish Oat1 and Oat3, in this study we analyzed interaction of various classes of environmental contaminants with these membrane transporters using the transport activity assay with HEK293 Flp-In cell line stably overexpressing zebrafish Oat1 and Oat3, respectively. Based on the initial screening of a series of 36 environmental contaminants on their ability to interact with zebrafish Oat1 and Oat3, the most potent interactors were selected, their IC50 values calculated and type of interaction determined. Finally, to further confirm the type of interaction and initially evaluate their toxic potential, the cytotoxicity assays were performed. Broad ligand selectivity and similarity of zebrafish Oat1 and Oat3 with mammalian orthologs was confirmed and potent interactors among environmental contaminants identified.

Abstract
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play an important role in cellular detoxification as enzymatic mediators of glutathione (GSH) conjugation with a wide range of deleterious compounds, enabling their easier extrusion out of the organism. GSTs are shown to interact with organotin compounds (OTCs), known environmental pollutants, either as substrates, serving as electrophilic targets to the nucleophilic attack of GSH, or as noncompetitive inhibitors by binding to GST active sites and disrupting their enzymatic functions. There is a wide range of deleterious biological effects caused by OTCs in low concentration range. Their environmental concentrations, further potentiated by bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms, correspond with inhibitory constants reported for Gsts in zebrafish, which implies their environmental significance. Therefore, our main goal in this study was to analyze interactions of three major zebrafish Gsts - Gstp1, Gstr1, and Gstt1a - with a series of ten environmentally relevant organotin compounds. Using previously developed Gst inhibition assay with recombinant Gst proteins and fluorescent monochlorobimane as a model substrate, we determined Gst inhibitory constants for all tested OCTs. Furthermore, in order to elucidate nature of Gst interactions with OTCs, we determined type of interactions between tested Gsts and the strongest OTC inhibitors. Our results showed that OTCs can interact with zebrafish Gsts as competitive, noncompetitive, or mixed-type inhibitors. Determined types of interactions were additionally confirmed in silico by molecular docking studies of tested OTCs with newly developed Gst models. In silico models were further used to reveal structures of tested Gsts in more detail and identify crucial amino acid residues which interact with OTCs within Gst active sites. Our results revealed more extensive involvement of Gstr1 and Gstp1 in detoxification of numerous tested OTCs, with low inhibitory constants in nanomolar to low micromolar range and different types of inhibition, whereas Gstt1a noncompetitively interacted with only two tested OTCs with significantly higher inhibitory constants.

Abstract
Patients with urolithiasis, particularly hypercalciuria, may have reduced bone mineral density (BMD). There are numerous risk factors contributing to reduction of BMD such as advanced age, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, low calcium intake, etc. The aim of our study was to investigate the association of lifestyle risk factors and daily intake of milk and dairy products with determinants of BMD in a group of recurrent calcium stone formers (RSF) compared with healthy subjects (HS). The study was carried out at the Department of Mineral Research, Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, Croatia. The study included 144 subjects, i.e. 56 RSF and 78 HS. BMD was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. A standard self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data on lifestyle risk factors. Current dietary intake was assessed by personal interview that included questions about milk and dairy product intake. Low BMD was observed in 44.64% of RSF and 35.90% of HS. RSF consumed significantly less milk and dairy products than HS. Calcium restriction in dietary recommendations might be unnecessary due to the impact on bone mineral loss in RSF and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry should be included in the routine evaluation of RSF.

Abstract
Introduction The aim of the study was to evaluate the analytical performance of the new colorimetric, automatic analyser, Seal AutoAnalyzer 3 High Resolution (Seal AA3 HR) (Seal Analytical, Wisconsin, USA) for urinary iodine measurement. Materials and methods This study included testing of several analytical features of the method involving: imprecision (within-run %CVr, between-run %CVb and total laboratory precision %CVl), measurement uncertainty, carryover, linearity and method comparison, with 70 urine samples including the measuring range (20 - 700 µg/L). Results Within-run, %CVb and %CVl of two control levels were 2.03% and 3.04%, 0.51% and 2.61%, and 2.09% and 4.01%, respectively. Carryover effect was less than 1%. The linearity was good in the range of urinary iodine values between 60 and 500 µg/L (R2 = 0.99). Good agreement of urinary iodine values was found between manual technique and Seal AA3 HR, using Passing-Bablok regression (y = 7.84 (- 3.00 to 15.29) + 0.95 (0.90 to 1.00) x) and Blant-Altman test. Cusum test for linearity indicates that there is no significant deviation from linearity (P > 0.1). Conclusions The obtained results proved excellent precision, reproducibility and linearity, comparable to the already used, manual method. The New Seal AA3 HR automatic analyser is acceptable for urinary iodine measurement with very good analytical characteristics and can be used for urinary iodine epidemiological studies of the Croatian population.

Abstract
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are multifunctional phase II detoxification enzymes with primary function of glutathione conjugation of various endogenous and exogenous compounds. Teleost-specific Gstr1 in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was previously shown to have high expression in toxicologically relevant tissues and high activity towards model substrates. The aim of this study was a detailed functional characterization of zebrafish Gstr1. Molecular docking analyses were used to get novel insight into structural characteristics of Gstr1 and elucidation of the mechanistic interactions with both GSH and various Gstr1 substrates or inhibitors. An initial screening inhibition assay performed using model fluorescence substrate monochlorobimane (MCB) revealed interactions of different endogenous compounds and environmentally relevant xenobiotics with zebrafish Gstr1. All interacting compounds were further analyzed to determine their inhibition type and Ki values. Our data revealed that pregnenolone, progesterone, testosterone, DHEAS and corticosterone competitively inhibited transformation of MCB by Gstr1 with the calculated Ki values in the range 14-26 μM, implying that these hormones are physiological substrates of zebrafish Gstr1. Estrogens had no effect on Gstr1 activity. Taurochenodeoxycholate (TCDC) expressed lower inhibition potency toward Gstr1 with the Ki value of 33 μM. Among tested xenobiotics tributyltin chloride and rifampicin non-enzymatically bound Gstr1 enzyme (the calculated Ki values are 0.26 μM and 65 μM, respectively) and inhibited its activity, showing that these compounds are reversible noncompetitive inhibitors of zebrafish Gstr1. Insecticide diazinon competitively inhibited Gstr1 activity with calculated Ki value of 27 μM, while other Gstr1-interacting insecticides, chlorpyrifos-methyl (CPF-methyl) and malathion, showed allosteric activation-like effect. Among tested pharmaceuticals, tetracycline, erythromycin and methotrexate demonstrated competitive type of inhibition with the calculated Ki values of 17.5, 36.5 and 29 μM, respectively. In summary, we suggest that zebrafish Gstr1 has an important role in steroidogenesis, metabolism and/or physiological actions of androgens, but not estrogens in fish. Finally, our results imply the role of Gstr1 in metabolism of xenobiotics and protection of fish against deleterious environmental contaminants such as organophosphate insecticides and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
SUMMARY – New data gathered from large clinical trials indicate that nonobstructive coronary artery disease (non-CAD) is a clinical entity that should not be ignored. It is estimated that 50% of female population undergoing coronarography are diagnosed with non-CAD. There is also an increase in the prevalence of non-CAD in both genders, which is probably due to gradual expanding of clinical indications for angiography in patients with angina. Furthermore, considering the increased mortality risk established recently, a prognosis of non-CAD is not benign as previously thought. However, the concept and definition of non-CAD remains elusive causing difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. One of the major shortcomings is the exclusion-based diagnosis of non-CAD. Furthermore, treatment of non-CAD still presents a great challenge and optimal therapy is yet to be determined. There are two major hypotheses explaining the pathophysiological mechanisms of non-CAD, i.e. ischemic hypothesis based on abnormal microvascular dysfunction and non-ischemic one based on altered pain perception. This review encompasses a broader spectrum of pathophysiological mechanisms of non-CAD, and proposes a new way of classification based on the major disorder involved: type I (ischemic mechanisms) and type II (non-ischemic mechanisms), depending on which mechanism predominates. Hopefully, this would provide new insights in the understanding of this disorder, thus leading to accurate and early diagnosis and successful treatment, especially considering the increased mortality risk in these patients.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the role of serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) as a biomarker in patients with aortic valve stenosis (AS) in relation to heart failure and symptomatic status. This was a case control study, which included 51 patients with AS and 39 control subjects. At the time of study enrolment, detailed medical history was obtained and all subjects underwent physical examination, chest x-ray and echocardiography. OPG levels were measured in all subjects, and serum N-terminal of the pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT pro BNP) levels were determined in patients with AS. Serum OPG levels were elevated in patients with AS compared to control subjects (p=0.001). Patients with heart failure due to AS had elevated serum OPG levels in comparison to patients without heart failure (p=0.001). A significant correlation between OPG and symptomatic status was observed in all patients with AS (p<0.001), however, it was not the case in patients without heart failure (p=0.425). There was a positive correlation between OPG and NT pro BNP concentrations with objective signs of heart failure on chest x-ray (p<0.001). Negative correlation of OPG concentrations with aortic valve area was present (p<0.040), as well as with left ventricular ejection fraction (p<0.001). Serum OPG could be a valuable biomarker in the evaluation of severity of calcified AS and serve as an additional indicator besides clinical presentation and echocardiography in the assessment of surgical treatment or aortic valve replacement.

Abstract
OATS/Oats are transmembrane proteins that transport a variety of drugs, environmental toxins and endogenous metabolites into the cell. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) has seven OAT orthologs: Oat1, Oat2a-e and Oat3. In this study we specifically address Oat2 (Slc22a7) family. Conserved synteny analysis showed localization of zebrafish oat2 genes on two chromosomes, 11 and 17. All five zebrafish Oats were localized by live cell imaging in membranes of transiently transfected HEK293-T cells, and Oat2a, b, d, and e were confirmed using western blot analysis. Functional studies using the HEK293T cells overexpressing zebrafish Oats revealed two model fluorescent substrates of three Oats: Lucifer yellow for Oat2a and Oat2d (Km 122, and 49.7μM), and 6-carboxyfluorescein for Oat2b and Oat2d (Km 199.7, and 266.9μM). The initial screening of a series of diverse endo- and xenobiotics showed interaction with a number of compounds, including cGMP and diclofenac (IC50 27.74, and 19.14μM) with Oat2a; estrone-3-sulfate and diclofenac (IC50 30.96, and 12.6μM) with Oat2b; and fumarate and indomethacin (IC50 68.24, and 20.41μM) with Oat2d. This study provides the first comprehensive data set on Oat2 in zebrafish and offers an important basis for more detailed molecular and (eco)toxicological characterizations of these transporters.

Abstract
Organic cation transporters (OCTs) serve as uptake transporters of numerous endo- and xenobiotics. They have been in the focus of medical toxicological research for more than a decade due to their key role in absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion due to their expression on basolateral membranes of various barrier tissues. OCTs belong to the SLC22A family within the SLC (Solute carrier) protein superfamily, with three co-orthologs identified in humans (OCT1, 2 and 3), and two Oct orthologs in zebrafish (Oct1 and Oct2). The structural and functional properties of zebrafish Octs, along with their toxicological relevance, have still not been explored. In this study, we performed a functional characterization of zebrafish Oct1 using transient and stable heterologous expression systems and model fluorescent substrates as the basis for interaction studies with a wide range of endo- and xenobiotics. We also conducted a basic topology analysis and homology modeling to determine the structure and membrane localization of Oct1. Finally, we performed an MTT assay to evaluate the toxic effects of the seven interactors identified - oxaliplatin, cisplatin, berberine, MPP+, prazosin, paraquat and mitoxantrone - in human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293T) stably expressing zebrafish Oct1 (HEK293T-drOct1 cells). Our results show that the zebrafish Oct1 structure consists of 12 transmembrane alpha helices, which form the active region with more than one active site. Five new fluorescent substrates of Oct1 were identified: ASP+ (Km=26μM), rhodamine 123 (Km=103.7nM), berberine (Km=3.96μM), DAPI (Km=780nM), and ethidium bromide (Km=97nM). Interaction studies revealed numerous interactors that inhibited the Oct1-dependent uptake of fluorescent substrates. The identified interactors ranged from physiological compounds (mainly steroid hormones) to different classes of xenobiotics, with IC50 values in nanomolar (e.g., pyrimethamine and prazosin) to millimolar range (e.g., cimetidine). Cytotoxicity experiments with HEK293T-drOct1 cells enabled us to identify berberine, oxaliplatin and MPP+ as substrates of Oct1. The data presented in this study provide the first insights into the functional properties of zebrafish Oct1 and offer an important basis for more detailed molecular and ecotoxicological characterizations of this transporter.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the long term histopathologic changes in tracheal mucosa after a total laryngectomy , and to find out the relationship between the progression of histopathologic changes in tracheal mucosa and the duration of breathing through the tracheostomy. Tracheal mucosal biopsies were taken from a total of 35 patients, of both sexes, who underwent a total laryngectomy for laryngeal carcinoma at least one year prior. Histologic specimens of tracheal mucosa were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined under light microscopy. Almost all of the patients demonstrated histopathologic changes or abnormalities. Based on the results, histological findings were grouped into seven categories: normal respiratory epithelium, mild, moderate and advanced basal cell hyperplasia, squamous metaplasia, and slight and moderate and dysplasia. The time elapsed since surgery was calculated for each histopathological change separately. In laryngeal carcinoma patients, after a total laryngectomy histopathologic changes occur in tracheal mucosa. The mildest histopathological changes are found in the patients who had a longer period between the operation and the examination.

Abstract
The aim of this population based neuroepidemiological study was to establish the real incidence rates of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD): stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in the Republic of Croatia. Multicentric study included 89 501 persons of all ages in four regional centres in Croatia: Zagreb, Osijek + Slavonski Brod, Rijeka and Split. The following incidence rates of stroke, expressed at population of 100 000, have been established: Zagreb 290.52, Osijek + Slavonski Brod 302.14, Rijeka 219.65, Split 195.82. Incidence rate of stroke for the Republic of Croatia is 251.39. The following incidence rates of TIA, expressed at population of 100,000, have been established: Zagreb 87.15, Osijek + Slavonski Brod 156.53, Rijeka 90.11, Split 59.10. Incidence rate of TIA for the Republic of Croatia is 100.55. In the continental part of Croatia (Zagreb, Osijek + Slavonski Brod) incidence rate of stroke is higher by 45%, while incidence rate of TIA is higher by 82% than in the coastal part of Croatia, probably due to different lifestyle and environmental factors. The study has shown relatively high incidence rates of acute CVD (stroke and TIA) in the Republic of Croatia, which proves that CVD are a great public health problem.

Abstract
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a key regulator in bone metabolism, that also has effect in vascular system. Studies suggest that osteoprotegerin is a critical arterial calcification inhibitor, and is released by endothelial cells as a protective mechanism for their survival in certain pathological conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and other metabolic disorders. That has been shown in studies in vitro and in animal models. The discovery that OPG deficient mice (OPG -/- mice) develop severe osteoporosis and arterial calcification, has led to conclusion that osteoprotegerin might be mulecule linking vascular and bone system. Paradoxically however, clinical trials have shown recently that OPG serum levels is increased in coronary artery disease and correlates with its severity, ischemic cardial decompensation, and future cardiovascular events. Therefore it is possible that osteoprotegerin could have a new function as a potential biomarker in early identification and monitoring patients with cardiovascular disease. Amongst that osteoprotegerin is in association with well known atherosclerosis risc factors: undoubtedly it is proven its relationship with age, smoking and diabetes mellitus. There is evidence regarding presence of hyperlipoproteinemia and increased serum levels of osteoprotegerin. Also the researches have been directed in genetic level, linking certain single nucleotid genetic polymorphisms of osteoprotegerin and vascular calcification appearance. This review emphasises multifactorial role of OPG, presenting numerous clinical and experimental studies regarding its role in vascular pathology, suggesting a novel biomarker in cardiovascular diseases, showing latest conclusions about this interesting topic that needs to be further explored.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the specificity and sensitivity of transcranial sonography (TCS) and the Pocket Smell Test (PST) in differing Parkinson's disease from essential tremor. The results were compared with the dopamin transporter scan (DaTSCAN) findings. Based on the DaTSCAN finding we formed a group of patients with essential tremor (51 patients) and a group with the Parkinson's disease (59 patients). The control group consisted of 26 healthy one. To evaluate the olfactory dysfunction the PST was used, whereas by TCS the substantia nigra hyperechogenicity was marked. The sensitivity and specificity of each diagnostic method was statistically calculated. In confirming Parkinson's disease the specificity of TCS was 88.2 % and the sensitivity 94.9 %. The specificity of PST was 80.4 % whereas the sensitivity was 74.6 %. TCS and PST should be performed to evaluate which patients need to be examined by DaTSCAN.

Abstract
The aim of this case study was to evaluate the clinical symptoms in patients with basal ganglia calcifications and compare the neuroimaging methods used in confirming this state. The clinical status and performed transcranial sonography of basal ganglia structures in patients with brain calcifications found by computed brain tomography was examined. In one of these patients DaTSCAN was performed. A large spectrum of different symptoms was found. Transcranial sonography of basal ganglia showed the hyperechogenicity of nucleus lenticularis in eight out of 10 patients. DaTSCAN, which was performed to one patient with parkinsonian signs and the hyperechogenicity of substantia nigra found by transcranial sonography, was normal. Transcranial sonography is a newly neuroimaging method which can contribute to diagnosing basal ganglia calcifications in patients with different neurological signs. Computed tomography of brain remains the most adequate technique in visualising calcifications.

Abstract
The aim of this retrospective study was to provide the incidence and mortality rate for all patients with laryngeal carcinoma diagnosed in Osijek-Baranja County, during the period of 1999-2008. In this period, there were 329 registered patients, from which 301 (91.5%) males, and 28 (8.5%) females. Age-standardized rate (ASR World) laryngeal cancer incidence was 6.4/100,000 (13.4/100,000 for males and 0.9/100,000 for females). In the same period, 238 people, including 224 (94.1%) men and 14 (5.9%) women died of laryngeal carcinoma. Age-standardized rate (ASR World) laryngeal cancer mortality was 4.4/100,000 (9.8/100,000 for males and 0.5/100 000 for females). There is a significant decline in mortality in males and increased mortality in females. Laryngeal carcinoma is a significant public health problem in the Osijek-Baranja county. Although the study period shows a tendency to decrease in the number of new cases and deaths, in the times ahead it is important to focus the emphasis on prevention and early detection with the goal of reducing incidence and mortality.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible association between polymorphisms in the Vitamin D receptor gene (VDR gene) and tendency for development of psoriasis vulgaris and diabetes mellitus in the population of Slavonia, which is a region in the Eastern Croatia. In order to conduct the mentioned evaluation the restriction fragment length polymorphisms (ApaI, BsmI and TaqI) in the Vitamin D receptor gene were researched in three groups of patients: patients suffering only from psoriasis vulgaris, patients suffering only from diabetes mellitus, and patients suffering at the same time from both diseases. Four most common genotypes were found in all standardized control patients: triple heterozygotes BbAaTt (in 29.3% of the studied patients), bbAaTT (in 18.6% of the studied patients), bbaaTT (in 12.9% of the studied patients) and BbAATt (in 8.6% of the studied patients). Three most common VDR 3'-RFLP haplotypes determined in this study were: three-component baT, Bat and bAT haplotype. Results of the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium showed presence of BsmI polymorphism genotype frequencies disequilibrium in the group of patients suffering from psoriasis and ApaI polymorphism in the group of patients suffering from both diseases. According to the same statistical test all conditions for TaqI polymorphism genotype frequency were fulfilled in all groups of studied patients. There was no significant difference in distribution of BsmI, ApaI or TaqI polymorphism genotype frequencies between control patients and any of the subgroup of studied patients. In studied population none of analysed polymorphisms individually was associated with the risk of development of psoriasis, diabetes or combined phenotype.

Abstract
In 1996, due to persistence of mild to moderate iodine deficiency, new law on obligatory salt iodination with 25 mg of potassium iodide (KI) per kg of salt was implemented in Croatia. Along with a new law, a new program for monitoring of iodine prophylaxis was implemented. Investigations of goiter and iodine intake performed in 2002, demonstrated sufficient iodine intake in Croatia with overall median of urinary iodine concentration (UIC) for schoolchildren in Croatia of 140 microg/L. In 2002, thyroid volumes (TV) measured by ultrasound in schoolchildren from all four geographic regions of Croatia were for the first time within the normal range according to ICCIDD reference values. Nowadays, Croatia is internationally recognized as iodine sufficient country. The aim of the present study was to assess current status of iodine intake in Croatia. The investigation was carried out in 2009. A total of 386 schoolchildren aged 7-10 years from all four major geographic regions of Croatia, 103 euthyroid pregnant women and 36 women of child-bearing age from Zagreb, the capital, were included in the survey. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was measured in all participants. Thyroid volumes were measured by ultrasound in schoolchildren from the capital of Zagreb (N = 101) and the village of Rude (N = 56). In the time period 2002-2009, the content of KI was analyzed in 384 salt samples from Croatian salt plants and samples of imported salt. An overall median UIC for schoolchildren in Croatia was 248 microg/L. Median UIC in pregnant women was 159 microg/L, with 50% of samples below and under 150 microg/L. Median UIC in women of child-bearing age was 136 microg/L. Thyroid volumes in schoolchildren were within the normal range according to the new reference values. Mean value of KI/kg of salt in samples from Croatian salt plants was 25.5 mg/kg and 24.9 mg/kg in samples of imported salt. A total of 72/384 (18.8%) of salt samples didn't corresponded to the Croatian law on obligatory salt iodination. Presented data indicate sufficient iodine intake of the Croatian population. Current medians of UIC in schoolchildren in Croatia are significantly higher than medians measured in 2002. This indicates that other potential sources of iodine are present in Croatian diet that may contribute to overall iodine intake. Due to rising medians of UIC in schoolchildren in Croatia, it is important to conduct nutrition studies to identify potential sources of "silent prophylaxis" in order to avoid iodine excess.

Abstract
PATH (Performance Assessment Tool for Quality Improvement in Hospitals), a project of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe offers hospitals a comprehensive and standardized tool (a set of indicators) to evaluate their own performance and development of measures for quality improvement. PATH Program was launched in Croatia in 2008, and it was conducted in 2009 in hospitals that have voluntarily decided to be involved. Here we present the results of the first phase of pilot experience of establishing the program, based on data collected in 22 Croatian hospitals. Analysis of the first results indicated the existence of marked differences among the hospitals that have taken the example of the percentage of cesarean sections ranging from 1.1% to 21.4%. The mortality rate of myocardial infarction ranged from 1.9 to 21.4%, while the mortality of stroke ranged from 12.5 to 45.5%. The highest percentage of needle-stick injuries reported for physicians was 16.2% of entire hospital staff in one year, 6.1% for nurses and 4.6% for the supportive staff. The result suggests the existence of many problems and limitations in data collection at hospital level, limitations in their analysis and creates recommendations for quality improvements, which must be taken into account when hospitals are compared on the national or international level.

Abstract
An overexpression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) on the surface of endothelial cells is one of the first steps in a high glucose-mediated endothelial dysfunction in diabetic patients. The effect of insulin administration in the condition of elevated glucose concentration on the E-selectin, intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression on human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) was investigated. Cells were cultured for 4 h in a medium supplemented with homocysteine (7 pM) and different concentration of glucose (5.5, 8.0, 12.0 and 16.5 mM respectively) with or without insulin (1 mlU/mL) addition. Expression of CAMs was analysed by flow-cytometry using monoclonal antibodies. Controls were CAMs expression in the medium with a corresponding glucose concentration. Obtained results show that short-term exposure of HAECs to moderate high glucose concentrations results in increased expression of E-selectin (2-fold), VCAM-1 (3-fold) and ICAM-1 (47%). At the same time, HAEC grown with 12 mM glucose expressed lesser E-selectin and, more ICAM-1 (for 64%) and VCAM-1 (41%) molecules. 16.5 mM glucose decreased expression of all investigated adhesion molecules. Addition of insulin was not changed expression of CAMs in a medium with 5.5 mM glucose. In conditions of elevated glucose concentration (12 mM), addition of insulin significantly dropped E-selectin (27%) and increased VCAM-1 (23%) expression. In conclusion, moderate elevated glucose concentration increased expression of cell adhesion molecules on HAEC. Insulin administration in the mild hyperglycaemia reduces an expression of the proinflammatory adhesion molecule E-selectin which could contribute in deceleration of macrovascular complications development in diabetic patients.

Abstract
The aim of this retrospective study was to answer the following questions: 1) is HPV DNA test for high-risk types able to predict lesion behaviour in women with cytological abnormalities lower than CIN3 (ASC-US, CIN1 and CIN2); 2) how to predict the histological diagnosis CIN3, and 3) is its use in diagnostic management in these patients justified or not? The study included 345 women (11 ASC-US, 312 CIN1 and 22 CIN2) that underwent conventional diagnostic management (repeat cytology and colposcopy with or without histology) and HPV testing for high-risk HPV types by PCR method. The value of HPVDNA test in predicting lesion regression/persistence was assessed in 275 subjects without histology. In 70 subjects, diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value) of repeat cytology and HPV DNA test in predicting severe intraepithelial lesion (CIN3) was determined on the basis of colposcopy guided biopsy. The prevalence of persistent lesions was significantly higher in the group of HPV positive than in the group of HPV negative subjects (37.7% vs. 16.4%; p < 0.001). Positive HPV test was associated with a 3.1-fold risk of lesion persistence [OR (95% CI) = 3.095 (1.65-5.82)]. However, on screening to predict the outcome of cytologically diagnosed cervical lesion with sensitivity of 39.7% and positive predictive value of 37.7% showed that a positive test could not be considered a reliable indicator of lesion persistence. In contrast, the specificity of 82.5% and negative predictive value of 83.6% suggested that a negative test result could be taken as a good indicator of lesion regression. In comparison with repeat cytology, HPV test showed higher sensitivity (69.2% vs. 61.5%) but significantly lower specificity (63.2% vs. 93.0%) and positive predictive value (30.0% vs. 66.7%), and comparable negative predictive value (90.0% vs. 91.4%) in predicting histologically verified CIN3. In one patient with a histological diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma with minimal invasion, repeat cytology indicated CIN3, whereas HPV test was negative. Due to authors experience in women with cytological abnormalities lower than CIN3, HPV testing is not a method to reliably predict lesion behaviour (regression, persistence) or presence of CIN3. HPV testing is of limited value in daily routine and should not be widely used until it is definitely demonstrated to be superior to conventional methods in improving the sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of CIN3 and invasive carcinoma detection.

Abstract
The 24-hour urine is golden standard for metabolic assessment of stone formers. However, due to the difficulties in collecting almost 1/3 of the samples can not be used for the analysis. Therefore, we analyzed first morning urine and calculated different risk indexes in order to asses possibility of using it in determining urolithiasis risk. Subjects were divided into 4 groups: male patients (n = 31, age 18-64), female patients (n = 31, age 25-63), male controls (n = 16, age 25-64) and female controls (n = 19, age 21-65). First morning urine pH, concentrations of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate, urate, oxalate, creatinine and glycosaminoglycans were determined. Based on them, ionic concentrations and activity products of calcium oxalate and phosphate were calculated by EQUIL 2. In addition, different risk indices were calculated. The results showed that both patients and control groups had metabolic disorders, but the frequencies of occurrence were statistically independent. Significant difference in concentration of urinary constituents between corresponding patient and control groups was observed only for glycosaminoglycans in female subjects. Ca/Cit ratio and Baggio index could differentiate between both corresponding patients and control groups. The results indicate that interplay between stone formation inhibitors and promotors is responsible for urinary stone formation and that the first morning urine could be used in assessing urolithiasis risk and its prevention.

Abstract
Several clinical and epidemiological studies revealed increased bone turnover and lower bone mass in patients with urolithiasis. Bone mass loss is particularly evident in idiopathic calcium stone formers. However, pathogenetic mechanisms and factors implicated in bone loss in these patients are still unknown. Dietary calcium restriction, increased intake of salt and animal proteins, vitamin D receptor polymorphisms are likely risk factors, while role of inflammatory cytokines, osteopontin and prostaglandin mediated bone resorption is yet to be determined. Regarding treatment and prevention, it has been proven that calcium supplements and high calcium diet with the addition of potassium alkali have an important role in prevention and treatment of both, urolithiasis and osteoporosis. Thiazide diuretics reduce hypercalciuria in renal tubules, and in addition promote osteoblast differentiation. Finally, bisphosphonates, a commonly used drugs in treatment of osteoporosis, show the potential to inhibit calcium stone formation, whereas a possible protective effect of antioxidants in bone loss and renal injurie needs to be investigated further.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Osteoporosis is a systemic disease, which is characterized by reduced bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of the bone tissue, resulting in an increased risk of fracture. Since osteoporosis is today a disease with high incidence rate, the aim of this study was to determine a correlation between bone mass density (BMD) and concentration of biochemical bone turnover markers--deoxypyridinoline (DPD) as a marker of bone resorption, and osteocalcin (OC) as a marker of bone formation. The study included 70 women between 33 and 76 years of age. In all women BMD was measured by Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) as a T-score. T-score was defined as the number of standard deviations of the bone mass density from the maximum bone mass density in young adults. According to T-score, patients were divided into three groups: patients with osteoporosis, patients with osteopenia and control group consisting of patients with normal T-score. DPD in urine and OC in serum were measured by a routine procedure. RESULTS a negative correlation between BMD and concentration of bone turnover marker was discovered. One-way analysis of variance and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis, with a P value < 0.05 being considered significant. Although a negative correlation was discovered, we concluded that both procedures have a significant role in diagnosis and follow-up of patients with osteoporosis.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the possible correlation between catecholamine and cortisol levels and changes in cerebral hemodynamics in patients with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study included 50 patients with chronic PTSD first ever hospitalized for psychiatric treatment and 50 healthy control subjects. All study subjects were aged 30-50. In PTSD patients, 24-h urine levels of the epinephrine and norepinephrine metabolites vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) and cortisol were determined and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography was performed on day 1 of hospital stay and repeated after 21-day psychiatric medicamentous treatment. On initial testing, increased level of 24-h VMA, decreased cortisol level and elevated mean blood flow velocity (MBFV) in the circle of Willis vessels were recorded in 25 (50.00%) patients. Repeat findings obtained after 21-day psychopharmaceutical therapy showed increased 24-h VMA, decreased cortisol and elevated MBFV in the circle of Willis vessels in seven (14.00%) patients (initial vs. repeat testing, P = 0.0002). Such parameters were not recorded in any of the control subjects (initial PTSD patient testing vs. control group, P = 0.0000). Study results pointed to a significant correlation between increased catecholamine levels, decreased cortisol level and elevated MBFV in the circle of Willis vessels caused by cerebral vasospasm. Psychiatric medicamentous therapy administered for three weeks significantly reduced the proportion of patients with concurrently altered cerebral hemodynamics, increased levels of catecholamine metabolites and decreased level of cortisol.

Abstract
Peptide hormones depend on reliable recognition by their receptors. Any mutation that compromises recognition of hormone and receptor molecules is dangerous, the carrier animal would not procreate and the mutation would be lost. Although, most of the hormones from one mammalian species are active when injected into another, the incompatibility of human GH receptor toward nonprimate GHs is a notable exception. It is reported that the coevolution of GH and GHR in primates includes two crucial steps (Mol. Biol. Evol. 18 (2001) 945). The first was mutation of GH His-->Asp at position 171 that happened before the split of Old world and New world monkeys. The second event was Leu-->Arg change at position 43 in the GH receptor molecule that happened in the ancestor of Old world monkeys. The proposed model is based on the possibility that certain mutations can modify the surface of one of interacting molecules to form a confined empty space, a niche in the otherwise congruent hormone/receptor interface. Altoough affinity between molecules is probably slightly reduced, recognition and function are not compromised in this special case. Further mutations of hormone and receptor molecules are allowed under the condition that they remain confined to the niche space. Mutations that do not compromise hormone function can be passed to offsprings. If the consequent mutation of one molecule change its shape to fill the niche space, further mutations without function loss will become less probable. Without the niche space, the phase of fast evolution is closed and both genes become conserved. In this setting, accumulated mutations before the niche closing mutation are the cause of species specificity. To become a dominant variety, carrier animals must possess survival advantage in comparison to the carriers of other less advantageous mutations.

Abstract
In the research we included a total of 207 subjects with the dismissal diagnosis of "mycetismus", who were treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases, General Hospital Osijek, during the 1983-1992 period. 32 of them were children. There were 44.93% of men, 39.61% of women and 15.45% of children. The latent time > 6 hours was determined in 51 (25%) and < 6 hours in 75% of subjects. In 156 of patients with the latent time > 6 hours, "false" poisoning occured, while 51 patients experienced real mushroom toxins poisoning. At the admission to the hospital, in patients with the latent time > 6 hours, a pathological PT (protrombine time) was established only in women, leukocytosis in both women and children, increased concentration of GGT (gamma-glutamin-transferase) in men, increased AST (aspartate-aminotransferase) and ALT (alanin-aminotransferase) only in women, and increased urea in both women and children. After 24 hours, control measuring established high values of AST and ALT extended PT uremia and exalted amount of ammonia in blood in 11 of patients (2 men, 7 women and 2 children). They had severe liver and kidney damage, the most probably caused by Amanita phalloides toxins. The latent time lasted 9 to 13 hours. Of the 11 above mentioned patients, 2 women, aged 74 and 43, and one girl, aged 6, died. No pathological laboratory parameters were established in 40 of subjects with the latent time of 6 and more hours, and the disease manifested through vomiting and diarrhea that lasted for several days. These subjects most probably suffered from mushroom toxins poisoning. Mushroom toxins irritate the mucuous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, and there are many such poisonous mushrooms. There were no mortalities in this group of subjects.

Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to analyze secular trend of mortality from cerebrovascular diseases in Croatia and its regional characteristics. The research comprised all deaths from cerebrovascular diseases in Croatia in persons aged between 35 and 74 years over the period 1958-1997. The investigated period is divided in eight 5-year periods, and for that 5-year periods proportional mortality rates, standardized mortality rates and specific mortality rates, according to the age and gender were calculated. Number of all deaths in the population aged 35-74 in Croatia, by 5-year periods rose from 18,913 to 26,788 (increase of 42%), deaths from cerebrovascular diseases from 2831 to 3959 (increase of 40%). Proportional mortality rate for this disease increased from 9.0% in the first 5-year period to 14.8% in the last 5-year period (increase of 64%). Standardized mortality rates for cerebrovascular diseases increased from 118 to 206 per 100,000 inhabitants (increase of 75%). The specific mortality rates over a 5-year period have shown a trend of increase in all men age groups and stagnation or decrease in women age groups. At the same time the rates standardized by age and sex increased by 62%. Standardized mortality rates for cerebrovascular diseases in continental communities (Osijek, Varazdin) are much higher (twice or even threefold) than those in coastal communities (Split, Rijeka). A data analysis showed that, although mortality trends of cerebrovascular diseases stagnated or even declined in some communities during the recent years, the secular trend for the entire country had a tendency of constant rise over the whole period of research. Therefore, the short-term prognosis predicts further increase of both the number and rates of deaths from cerebrovascular diseases in our country.

Abstract
A long-term specific IgG serology pattern after successful eradication of Helicobacter pylori using Pyloriset EIA-G with acid-glycine extracted antigen is shown. A total of 214 HP-seropositive dyspeptic patients, mean age 51, were included. Despite individual variability among patients, calculation of antibody decline in each individual, 2, 4, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after treatment, the authors observed that overall mean decline in the group as a whole was 49%, 67%, 78% 87%, 91%, and 93%, respectively. Unlike Cutler and coworkers, the authors found a regular constant IgG-decline in successfully treated patients until seroconversion. The time to reach seroconversion was found to depend on the pretreatment level of specific IgG. In the groups of patients with baseline IgG less than 1300, 42/44 (95%) seroconverted within the first year of monitoring. When long-term monitoring is needed, unnecessary multiple biopsies can be avoided by use of quantitative IgG serology.

Abstract
AIM To assess the risk of viral transfusion-transmitted infections in Croatia. METHODS The following parameters were analyzed: frequency of blood donations repeatedly reactive for HBsAg and anti-HCV (1993-1999); blood donations confirmed positive for HBsAg and anti-HCV (1997-1999), anti-HIV1/2, and syphilis reactivity (1993-1999); number of registered patients with hepatitis B and C; transfusion-associated hepatitis B and hepatitis C; and frequency of HBV, HCV and HIV markers in patients with congenital bleeding disorders (1993-1998). RESULTS The frequency of repeatedly reactive HBsAg and anti HCV markers and confirmed positive HBsAg, anti-HCV, and syphilis markers in donors blood decreased during the study, whereas the frequency of anti-HIV1/2 positivity did not change. The frequency of confirmed positive donors in 1999 was 0.068% for HBsAg, 0.035% for anti HCV, 0.002% for anti HIV1/2, and 0.0056% for syphilis. The number of patients with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and transfusion-associated hepatitis B and C steadily decreased during the 1993-1998 period. The number of transfusion-associated hepatitis patients leveled off in 1997. From the beginning of the follow-up of AIDS patients in 1987, only 7 (2%) of hemophiliacs have been HIV-infected, all before 1990 and due to non-inactivated coagulation factor concentrates. There were no cases of transfusion-associated HIV2 infection in patients with congenital bleeding disorders or transfusion-associated HIV1 infection through transfusion of labile blood components. CONCLUSION The safety of transfusion therapy in Croatia has improved, and the present risks of viral transfusion transmitted diseases are very low.

Abstract
The author has investigated the impact of psychological and socio-economic factors on cerebral hemodynamics and development of cerebrovascular disease (CVD). A group of 120 war sufferers with signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and adaptation disturbances, and 120 persons of the control group with no traumatic war experience have been studied. The blood flow velocity and various parameters of spectral frequency analysis have been measured, using the method of transcranial doppler sonography (TCD). A greater number of hemodynamical changes has been found in the group of subjects than in the control group (p < 0.05), in which increase of vasospasm is statistically significant probably as a result of predomination of the sympathetic system stimulation and nicotinic effect on the brain blood vessels. Flow disturbances are relatively more frequent in older subjects, which suggests the rapid development of the atherosclerotic process. The results suggest that exposure to prolonged stress and bad socio-economic factors, through different neurobiological mechanisms, increased the risk for stroke.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of psychological and socio-economic factors on the frequency and characteristics of risk factors for cerebrovascular disease (CVD) among Croatians. A group of 120 war sufferers with signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and adaptation disturbances have been studied, and compared with a control group of 120 persons with no traumatic war experience. The risk factors for CVD were registered using epidemiological, clinical and functional measures, and level of the risk. In a displaced persons group a significant higher rates (p < 0.05) of arterial hypertension (AH), hyperlipidemia and obesity are found, with particularly higher rates of occurrence of AH and hyperlipidemia in younger individuals. Alcoholism was more frequent in the control group. Total risk for stroke was higher in the exposed group. The authors conclude that there is a need for undertaking intensive preventive measures in the risk population exposed to chronic stress and negative socioeconomic life conditions.

Abstract
The reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a new vaccine against viral hepatitis A, under the name HAVRIX, manufactured by SmithKline Beecham Biologicals, Belgium, was studied. A single dose of 1 ml contains not less than 360 ELISA units of inactivated HAV, strain HM175, cultivated on human diploid cells. The vaccine has been applied intramuscularly to 80 second-grade primary school children under the 0, 1 and 6-month schedule. Postvaccinal reactions were followed for three days after each application of the vaccine. They were generally mild and present in less than 5% of the vaccinees (local as well as general). One month after the last vaccination the seroconversion was 100% in the anti HAV antibody test (HAVAB-ABBOT), the antibody level being over 500 IU/I, in 98% of the vaccinees. In conclusion, the tested vaccine is perfectly acceptable from both aspects, postvaccinal reactions and conferred protection. As the hepatitis A morbidity in Croatia has never been as low as in the last few years, the eventual introduction of this vaccination into the EPI is questionable.

Abstract
Serums of whole blood donors, plasma donors, hemophiliacs, persons with risks behavior and normal population simultaneously were tested for markers of infectious diseases, anti-HIV-1 with Plivazim and anti-HIV-1/2 and anti-HTLV-1/2 with Roche Retrovirus EIA. The positive results were confirmed by immunofluorescence assay and Western blot. Nonspecific reactive serums were detected by Roche Retrovirus EIA and by Plivazim EIA, but there was no significant difference in the frequence of reactive results. Roche Retrovirus EIA test had specificity of 99.16% and sensibility of 97.56% as compared to Plivazim. Simultaneous testing of donors with a combined test for anti-HIV-1/2 and anti-HTLV-1 is equally reliable as testing with only anti-HIV-1.
