Abstract
Objective: To discuss the efficacy and safety of orthokeratology with increased compression factor (ICF) in myopia correction in children. Methods: It was a prospective cohort study. Data of the right eyes of myopic children who visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu Medical College for orthokeratology were collected continuously from May 2016 to Dec 2018. All children had low myopia (<3.00 D) or moderate myopia (≥3.00 D), and were grouped using random numbers in Excel to receive orthokeratology with ICF or conventional compression factor (CCF). The axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), near visual acuity (NVA), Efron grade, corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc), tear film break-up time (BUT), higher-order aberrations (HOAs), accommodative amplitude (AA) and accommodative facility (AF) were compared between groups during the 1-year treatment period. The Chi-squared test was used to compare the categorical data, while the independent-sample t-test was performed to assess the measurement data. Results: After 1 year of treatment, there were no statistical differences in AL, SE, BCVA, NVA, Efron grade, CH, CRF, IOPcc, BUT, HOAs, AA and AF between the low myopia ICF group and the low myopia CCF group (all P>0.05). After 6 months of treatment, the AL increased by (0.05±0.03) mm in the moderate myopia ICF group and by (0.08±0.04) mm in the moderate myopia CCF group (t=-3.416, P=0.001). After 1 year of treatment, the AL increased by (0.12±0.04) mm in the moderate myopia ICF group and by, (0.16±0.05) mm in the moderate myopia CCF group (t=-4.017, P<0.001). The SE was (-0.16±0.40) D in the moderate myopia ICF group, significantly different from that in the moderate myopia CCF group [(-0.58±0.60) D; t=3.529, P=0.001]. There were also statistical differences in HOAs, spherical aberrations and AF (all P<0.05), but no statistical differences in BCVA, NVA, Efron grade, CH, CRF, IOPcc, BUT and AA between the two groups (all P>0.05). Conclusions: Orthokeratology with ICF safely and effectively corrected myopia in children during the observation period. It could control the progression of moderate myopia more effectively than that of low myopia.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the flora characteristics and differences of esophageal tissues between elderly esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients and young and middle-aged ESCC patients, so as to assist in studying the potential biomarkers of elderly ESCC patients. Methods: In this study, a retrospective study was adopted. 72 ESCC patients diagnosed in Taihe Hospital, Shiyan City, Hubei Province from July 2018 to July 2019 were selected, including 49 patients in the elderly group (≥ 60 years old, 40 males and 9 females), 23 patients in the young and middle-aged group (<60 years old, 21 males and 2 females). In the same period, 20 healthy persons without abnormal gastroscopy in endoscopy center were selected as the control group (aged 35-78 years old, median age 57 years old, 16 males and 4 females). The genomic DNA was extracted from the affected esophageal tissues of patients with ESCC and the middle esophageal samples of the control group. The V4 hypervariable region of bacterial 16SrRNA gene sequence was amplified. Illumina HiSeq sequencing technology was adopted. The flora characteristics of elderly, young and middle-aged ESCC patients was compared and analyzed. QIIME and Rstudio software were used to analyze the sequence data, and nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test or Wilcoxon rank sum test were used for statistical methods. Results: Shannon index [5.17 (4.53, 5.95) vs. 4.79 (3.74, 5.97)], Simpson index [0.94 (0.91, 0.96) vs. 0.92 (0.83, 0.96)] and Chao1 index [343.55 (259.76, 570.59) vs. 329.16 (268.88, 648.00)] were similar in flora of two groups, and there was no significant difference (Z=-0.791, -1.057, -0.380, all P>0.05). There was no significant difference in β-diversity between the elderly group and the young and middle-aged group (PC1=19.14%, PC2=6.95%, PPC1=0.67, PPC2=0.42). At the phyla level, the top 5 phyla in abundance were as follows: Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Fusobacteria in the young and middle-aged group, while the top 5 phyla in abundance were as follows: Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria and Actinobacteria in the elderly group; the significant difference between the two groups was Fusobacteria (Q=0.596, P<0.05). At the genus level, the top 5 genera in the young and middle-aged group in abundance were as follows: Prevotella, Bacteroides, Streptococcus, Selenomonas and Veillonella. In the elderly group, Prevotella, Bacteroides, Streptococcus, Selenomonas and Haemophilus were the top 5 in abundance, and there were significant difference in Fusobacterium between the two groups (Q=0.938, P<0.05). PICRUSt function prediction showed that the abundance of Aminoacyl.tRNA.biosynthesis, Nucleotide.excision.repair, RNA.polymerase, Ribosome, Clavulanic.acid.biosynthesis, Photosynthesis and Photosynthesis. proteins in the elderly group were lower than those in the young and middle-aged group (all Q=0.734, P<0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant difference in α-diversity and β-diversity between elderly ESCC patients and young and middle-aged patients, but the abundance of Fusobacterium flora increased.

Abstract
Micro ribonucleic acid (miRNA) is a type of noncoding RNA, and it has been revealed to play important roles in the activity of the mammary gland (MG) in some species. However, the function of miRNAs in MG of sheep is poorly understood. In the study, Gansu Alpine Merino (GAM; n = 9) and Small-tailed Han sheep (STH; n = 9) with different milk production traits were investigated. Microstructures and the expression profile of miRNAs of MG tissues at peak lactation were studied. Mature alveolar lumens of MG in appearance were larger in STH than GAM. The expression levels of CSN2 and the content of rough endoplasmic reticulum were also higher in STH ewes than GAM ewes. A total of 124 mature miRNAs were expressed, and 18 of these were differentially expressed between the 2 breeds. The KEGG analysis results showed that the targeted genes of differentially expressed miRNAs were mainly involved in some metabolic pathways and signaling pathways related to MG development, milk protein, and fat synthesis. The findings in the study can improve our understanding of the roles of miRNAs in the development and lactation of MG in sheep.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the feasibility of two-stage crestal approach sinus elevation in severe atrophic maxilla. Methods: A total of 25 patients (male: 13 cases, female: 12 cases) who attended Department of Implant Center, Stomatological Hospital, Southern Medical University from May 2016 to May 2018 were included in this study. The age of the patients was 32-49 years old. The inclusion criteria were: single or multiple tooth loss in posterior maxilla with residual bone height ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 mm and vertical bone width≥6 mm, no pathological changes or septum were detected in the sinus. The elevated sides were divided into three groups according to different buccal-palatal sinus width (SW): wide (16 case, SW>15 mm), normal (12 case, 12 mm≤SW≤15 mm), narrow (5 case, SW<12 mm). Finally, 23 patients with 33 implants were placed by the two-stage crestal approach for sinus elevation. Six months after implant placement, final restorations were delivered. Implant survival rate, implant stability quotient (ISQ), immediate vertical bone height (VBH) after surgeries, changes of sinus elevation height (cSEH), marginal bone loss (MBL) at 1 year follow-up were examined. Results: Twenty-three patients were finally included in the study, including 12 males and 11 females, aged (41.2±7.6) years old. All implants healed uneventfully. ISQ (wide: 50.81±2.69; normal: 60.58±2.54; narrow: 63.12±3.58), immediate VBH after 1st surgery [wide: (7.99±1.13) mm; normal: (8.95±0.81) mm; narrow: (9.18±0.90) mm] and 2nd surgery [wide: (11.46±0.88) mm; normal: (12.77±0.49) mm; narrow: (12.57±0.55) mm], cSEH six months after 1st [wide: (3.87±0.43) mm; normal: (2.01±0.65) mm; narrow: (1.49±0.33) mm] and 2nd [wide: (1.16±0.29) mm; normal: (1.04±0.33) mm ; narrow: (0.97±0.41) mm] surgery, MBL [wide: (0.91±0.05) mm; normal: (0.79±0.10) mm; narrow: (0.74±0.07) mm] were significantly different among three groups (P<0.05). In all the three groups, cSEH was barely detected at 1-year follow-up (P>0.05). Conclusions: Two-stage crestal approach for sinus elevation might be an alternative protocol in severe atrophic posterior maxilla, especially in cases with narrow and normal buccal-palatal width. There is an urgent need for long time follow-up and more clinical cases.

Abstract
Objective: To study serum HCV antibody (anti-HCV) with geographic distribution characteristics in Zhejiang Province. Methods: A stratified random cluster sampling method was used. Serum samples of the surveyed population were collected from selected hospitals, anti-HCV antibodies were examined, then hepatitis C infection rates among different genders, regions and age groups were analyzed. The anti-HCV rate was compared using the χ (2) test. Results: The average anti-HCV positive rate in Zhejiang Province was 0.24% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.16% ~ 0.32%]. The antibody positive rate in the plain area was 0.32% (95% CI: 0.19% ~ 0.45%), which was significantly higher than the coastal islands 0.05%(95% CI: 0.00% ~ 0.12%, χ (2) = 7.638, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between plain area and hilly area 0.22% (95% CI: 0.03% - 0.41%). There was no statistically significant difference in anti-HCV positive rates between males and females (χ (2) = 2.238, P = 0.135). The highest positive rate of anti-HCV (0.93%) was in the population aged 56-60 years and the lowest in the population aged less than 20 years. Anti-HCV positive rate of all age groups in 2017 was lower than that of 2006 seroepidemiological study of hepatitis C. Conclusion: Zhejiang Province is a region with low anti-HCV positive rate and the disease prevalence further reduced than 10 years ago. The positive rate of anti-HCV in plain areas is higher than islands. Middle-aged and elderly people are the age group with high prevalence, and the anti-HCV positive rate in people under 20 years old is exceptionally low. Gender differences in anti-HCV positive rate have little effect.

Abstract
Background To analyze the cardio-protective effects of ticagrelor in patients with acute coronary syndrome with S-T segment elevation. Methods The sample was 200 patients who had been diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome accompanied by diabetes Mellitus type II. Only patients having ST segment elevation before the treatment were included. Then, the subjects were further randomly divided into an observation group and a control group. The control group of 100 patients received clopidogrel; the observation group of 100 patients of ticagrelor. The serous creatine kinase CK-MB, functional cardiac indexes of left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVDD), cardiac troponin I, ventricular ejection fraction, and relevant major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were compared between the two groups. Results One month after a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) the observation group showed better results against angina, stent thrombosis, and all-cause mortality compared with those of the control subjects. Six months after treatment, both groups suffered adverse reactions. The number of patients who suffered adverse reactions in respiratory tract in the observation group was higher than in the control group. The inhibition of platelet aggregation IPA of ticagrelor was found to be significantly higher than clopidogrel, having a significant p value. Conclusion Ticagrelor can effectively protect myocardial function for patients with ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome accompanied by diabetes and can reduce the incidence of adverse reactions..

Abstract
There is growing interest in the whole saliva as a diagnostic fluid because of the relatively simple and non-invasive collection. Research on salivary proteomic and genomic has greatly facilitated the diagnosis and therapy of oral diseases, also revealed the molecular mechanism of the diseases. Saliva-derived exosome as a new source, with various molecular constituents of their cells of origin, including proteins, mRNA and miRNA might serve as potential biomarker. This article reviews the biological properties of saliva exosome, its separation and other aspects associated with disease.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of sandblasting on bending strength and subcritical crack growth (SCG) under cyclic loading of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramics. Methods: After being polished, sixty bar-shaped specimens of Y-TZP (Wieland zirconia ceramics) were assigned to two groups (n=30) according to the random number table, the sandblasting group (SG) which was treated with sandblasting and the control group (CG) which remained untouched. In each group, half of the specimens (n=15) were subjected to bending strength test, and the results were examined by Weibull statistics and analyzed with ANOVA. The other 15 specimens in each group were subjected to fatigue tests. The results were examined by Weibull statistics and subcritical crack propagation rates were calculated. Results: The bending strengths of SG and CG were (1 291±133) and (1 140±124) MPa (F=10.117, P=0.004), and the Weibull modules of the two groups were 11.06 and 10.64 respectively. The crack growth rate of SCG of SG was lower than that of CG under the same cyclic loading. Conclusions: Proper sandblasting on Y-TZP ceramic can increase its bending strength and resistance to SCG.

Abstract
Proper management of antibiotic-associated pseudo membranous colitis is not clear. This article is to investigate proper treatment of antibiotic-associated pseudo membranous colitis. Data of 67 patients (aged 18-69 years, with 31 males and 46 females) with antibiotic-associated pseudo membranous colitis were retrospectively analyzed including the demography, antibiotics to induce and for treatment of the pseudo membranous colitis, and other supportive measures. All 67 patients had a positive cytotoxin test, which confirmed the pseudo membranous colitis. Antibiotics which induced the pseudo membranous colitis included clindamycin, ofloxacin, piperacillin, cefatriaxone, penbritin and ceftazidime. Once the correct diagnosis was made, the culprit antibiotics were discontinued immediately, and narrow-spectrum antibiotics like metronidazole and vancomycin were administered in combination with correction of fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, use of vitamins C and B complex to repair the intestinal mucosa, and avoidance of antispasmodic and antidiarrheal agents. After appropriate treatment for 2-20 days, all patients recovered with no sequela. Sixty-two patients were clinically cured while five (7.5%) had diarrhea recurrence within two months of the end of therapy. Retreatment with tapering and extended period of metronidazole and/or vancomycin led to complete recovery of the patients. Multiple antibiotic agents are associated with pseudo membranous colitis, and correction of fluid and electrolyte abnormalities and use of vitamins to repair the intestinal mucosa should be performed to speed up the cure process.

Abstract
Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration is induced by multiple factors, but few studies have examined the effects of aquaporins on this process. We compared the expression levels of aquaporins 1 and 3 in normal and degenerative lumbar intervertebral discs. Fifteen normal and 15 degenerative lumbar intervertebral disc tissues were excised from lumbar burst fracture patients during orthopedic operations at the Dali College subsidiary hospital. Tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and the expression levels of aquaporins 1 and 3 were measured by immunohistochemistry. Hematoxylin-eosin-staining results illustrated that the structures of the intervertebral disc tissues from the control group were clear, with distinct collagen fiber shapes and slight edema but without mucoid degeneration. Structures of the intervertebral disc tissues from the disease group were obscure and disordered with hyperplastic collagen fibers and tissues of severe inflammatory edemas with necrosis mucoid degeneration. Immunohistochemistry results demonstrated that the average absorbances of aquaporins 1 and 3 in the disease group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.01), suggesting that the reduction of aquaporins 1 and 3 may be a factor resulting in lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration.

Abstract
Liquorice (root of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.) is an important Chinese traditional medicine for many ailments (4). From 2002, severe outbreaks of root rot occurring on cultivated G. uralensis plants in Ningxia, China, have affected the yield and quality of liquorice and been considered as a major threat to commercial production of liquorice. Approximately 30% of the plants die from this disease in Ningxia every year. The disease, mainly affecting 2- to 4-year-old G. uralensis seedlings, begins with brown rot of root tips or lateral roots followed by internal decay of taproots during June to August every year. The infected plants are wilted with chlorotic foliage and easily pulled up from the soil. Root rot is clearly visible as a severe brown discoloration of vascular tissue along taproots. In severe cases, white mycelia are clearly visible on the surface of diseased roots and roots are decomposed. Isolations from diseased roots were made on potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with streptomycin sulfate. Isolates (n = 78) were recovered from symptomatic roots (n = 105) and pure cultures were established by the single spore method. The two most frequently isolated fungi were transferred to potato sucrose agar and identified as Fusarium solani (61.5%) and F. oxysporum (30.8%) (1). The monophialides bearing microconidia of F. solani are long when compared to those of F. oxysporum. Genomic DNA of strains F. solani G013 and F. oxysporum FLR were extracted from mycelia with the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) method. Primers EF1-728F and EF1-986R were used to amplify the translation elongation factor-1α (TEF-1α) gene (2). The TEF-1α sequences of F. solani G013 (GenBank Accession No. AB777258) and F. oxysporum FLR (AB777257) shared 99 and 100% similarity with F. solani isolate NRRL52790 and F. oxysporum isolate NRRL 38328, respectively. Pathogenicity tests with one representative isolate of each species were conducted in the greenhouse on 1-month-old potted G. uralensis seedlings (12 plants per treatment). Isolates of the tested fungi were transferred to PDA and incubated in darkness at 24 ± 1°C for 7 days. Plant taproots about 5 cm below the soil surface were wounded with a sterile needle and five 5-mm-diameter fungal disks on the margin of colony were taken and firmly placed on the wounded location of each taproot with tinfoil; wounded taproots of seedlings inoculated with sterile PDA disks were used as controls (3). Root rot was assessed 2 months after inoculation. F. solani G013 and F. oxysporum FLR produced root rot symptoms on inoculated plants that were the same as those observed in field plants, and the fungi were reisolated from roots with typical symptoms. Control plants inoculated with sterile PDA disks remained asymptomatic, and no pathogen was isolated from them. To our knowledge, this is the first report of root rot caused by F. solani and F. oxysporum on G. uralensis in China. Effective control strategies are needed to minimize losses. References: (1) C. Abstract
Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is an enzyme that influences placental human chorionic gonadotropin production during gestation. Previous studies have indicated an association between eNOS activity, implantation, and maintenance of pregnancy, but proposed associations between polymorphisms of the eNOS gene and recurrent miscarriage (RM) are controversial. To identify markers contributing to the genetic susceptibility to RM, we examined the potential association between RM and 8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; rs1799983, rs2070744, rs11771443, rs3918188, rs2853796, rs7830, rs1541861, and rs2853792) of the eNOS gene using the MassARRAY system (Sequenom, USA). The enrolled participants included 192 RM patients and 201 women with normal fertility as controls. The results showed that rs1799983 at exon 7 of the eNOS gene was significantly associated with RM (genotype: chi-square = 15.071, P = 0.001; allele: chi-square = 6.250, P = 0.016). Another significant association was observed for rs11771443 in the promoter (genotype: chi-square = 6.259, P = 0.044; allele: chi-square = 7.076, P = 0.008). Furthermore, strong linkage disequilibrium was observed in 3 blocks (D' > 0.9), and significantly fewer T-T-G haplotypes (chi-square = 5.981, P = 0.015) residing in block 1 were found in RM patients. These findings point to a role for eNOS gene polymorphisms in RM in the Chinese Han population and may be informative for future genetic or neurobiological studies of RM.

Abstract
This in vitro study evaluated the efficacy of micro-computed tomography (CT) in marginal leakage detection of Class V restorations. Standardized Class V preparations with cervical margins in dentin and occlusal margins in enamel were made in 20 extracted human molars and restored with dental bonding agents and resin composite. All teeth were then immersed in 50% ammoniacal silver nitrate solution for 12 hours, followed by a developing solution for eight hours. Each restoration was scanned by micro-CT, the depth of marginal silver leakage in the central scanning section was measured, and the three-dimensional images of the silver leakage around each restoration were reconstructed. Afterward, all restorations were cut through the center and examined for leakage depth using a microscope. The silver leakage depth of each restoration obtained by the micro-CT and the microscope were compared for equivalency. The silver leakage depth in cervical walls observed by micro-CT and microscope showed no significant difference; however, in certain cases the judgment of leakage depth in the occlusal wall in micro-CT image was affected by adjacent enamel structure, providing less leakage depth than was observed with the microscope (p<0.01). Micro-CT displayed the three-dimensional image of the leakage around the Class V restorations with clear borders only in the dentin region. It can be concluded that micro-CT can detect nondestructively the leakage around a resin composite restoration in two and three dimensions, with accuracy comparable to that of the conventional microscope method in the dentin region but with inferior accuracy in the enamel region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive greater splanchnic nerve (GSN) activation contributes to the progression of gastric ischemia-reperfusion (GI-R) injury. This study was designed to investigate the protective mechanism of cerebellar fastigial nucleus (FN) stimulation against GI-R injury. METHODS The GI-R injury model was induced in rats by clamping the celiac artery for 30 min, and then reperfusion for 30 min, 1, 3, 6, or 24 h, respectively. KEY RESULTS Microinjection of L-Glu (3, 6, 12 μg) into the FN dose-dependently attenuated GI-R injury and GSN activity. In addition, there was an enhancement of gastric mucosal blood flow in GI-R rats. Pretreatment with the glutamic acid decarboxylase antagonist into the FN, the GABAA receptor antagonist into the lateral hypothalamic area or lesion of superior cerebellar peduncle all reversed the protective effects of the FN stimulation. Furthermore, the FN stimulation reduced the TUNEL-positive gastric mucosal cell and Bax-positive gastric mucosal cell in GI-R rats. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES These results indicate that the protective effects of the FN stimulation against GI-R injury may be mediated by attenuation of the excessive GSN activation, gastric mucosal cell apoptosis, and Bax expression in GI-R rats.

Abstract
Reelin is an extracellular signaling protein that plays an important role in the development of the central nervous system. Post-mortem studies have shown lower reelin protein levels in the brains of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder compared with controls. Genetic studies have also shown that mutations in the reelin gene (RELN) increase the risk for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We evaluated whether an RELN gene variant, rs362719, which has been associated with increased susceptibility to bipolar disorder, is also associated with susceptibility to schizophrenia. We included 405 Chinese Han schizophrenia patients and 390 controls in our study. The polymorphism was genotyped by PCR and RFLP methods. We found a significant difference in allele frequency distribution (P< 0.05) between schizophrenia patients and controls. The frequency of the A allele was significantly higher in schizophrenia patients than in healthy controls. The effect of SNP rs362719 on allele distribution was significant in female (P < 0.05) but not in male participants (P = 0.473). Besides the gender factor, demographic and clinical characteristics of the rs362719 genotype groups were also analyzed using the chi-square test, but no significant differences were found. We conclude that rs362719 of the RELN gene is associated with susceptibility to schizophrenia in Chinese Han, possibly through a gender-specific mechanism. Further studies will be needed to confirm this genetic risk factor for schizophrenia.

Abstract
The serotoninergic (5-HT) system regulates neuronal activity in broad brain regions, and appears to be particularly important for modulating behavioral and physiological functions such as mood, emotion, sleep and appetite. Central 5-HT deregulation may be involved in many neuropsychological disorders, which include substance abuse and addiction. Previous studies suggest that genetic polymorphisms in some 5-HT receptor genes may relate to heroin dependency. Here we examined potential association between heroin dependence and four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 5-HT receptors (A-1438G and T102C of HTR(2A), and G861C and A1180G of HTR(1B)) in a cohort of Han Chinese. Participants included 303 heroin-dependent subjects who were recruited into the Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) Program in the Xi'an Mental Health Center, and 300 healthy controls. The resulting data yielded a significantly higher frequency of the HTR(1B) G allele with G861C among the heroin-dependent subjects relative to controls (p=0.001 after Bonferroni correction). Further genotype and clinical phenotype correlation study of the G861C carriers showed that the amount of heroin self-injection was higher in patients with the GG genotype relative to CC and CG genotypes (p<0.01). These findings point to a role for HTR(1B) polymorphism in heroin dependence among Han Chinese, and may be informative for future genetic or neurobiological studies on heroin dependence.

Abstract
Dynorphin peptides and k-opioid receptor are important in the rewarding effects of drugs of abuse such as heroin. This study examined potential association between heroin dependence and four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of prodynorphin (PDYN) gene (rs35286281 in promoter region and rs1022563, rs2235749, rs910080 in 3'UTR). Participants included 304 heroin-dependent subjects and 300 healthy controls. Genotype, allele frequencies and difference between groups were analyzed by HaploView 4.0 and SPSS 11.5 software. The analysis indicated a significant higher frequency of the PDYN 68bp VNTR (rs35286281) H allele in heroin-dependent subjects than in controls (p=0.002 after Bonferroni correction). Strong linkage disequilibrium was observed between rs1022563, rs2235749 and rs910080 polymorphism (D'>0.9). Significantly more TCT haplotypes were found in heroin-dependent patients than in the controls (p=0.006 after Bonferroni correction). We found significant pointwise correlation of these three variants (rs1022563, rs2235749 and rs910080) with heroin dependence. These findings support the important role of PDYN polymorphism in heroin dependence, and may guide future studies to identify genetic risk factors for heroin dependence.

Abstract
This study investigated the possible association between three functional polymorphisms in the promoter region of the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) gene and schizophrenia, depression, and heroin addiction. Genomic DNA was isolated from the venous blood leukocytes of 322 unrelated patients with schizophrenia, 156 patients with depression, 300 patients with heroin addiction, and 300 healthy unrelated individuals. Polymorphisms in the promoter region of DRD4 (-120 bp duplication, -616C/G, and -521C/T) were genotyped using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction analysis. Genotype and allele were analyzed using SPSS 11.5 software. Results of this analysis indicated that there is a strong finding of -120 bp duplication allele frequencies with schizophrenia (p=0.008) and weak finding with -1240 L/S and for paranoid schizophrenia (p=0.022). Interestingly, there is a stronger finding with -521 C/T allele frequencies with heroin dependence (p=0.0002). These observations strongly suggest that the -120-bp duplication polymorphism of DRD4 is associated with schizophrenia and that the -521 C/T polymorphism is associated with heroin addiction.

Abstract
Cupressus funebris Endl. (Chinese weeping cypress) is native to southwestern and central China. In June 2008, blighted shoots of Chinese weeping cypress trees were observed in Yunnan Province (southwestern China). Symptomatic trees were located in an ornamental planting established approximately 8 to 12 years ago. Additional samples were collected from 11 locations in the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Chongqing. Disease symptoms included yellowing and wilting of leaves on several branches, followed by sudden death within 6 to 8 weeks. Cross sections on trunks and branches revealed darkened zones. Tissue from diseased samples was plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 25°C. Fungal isolates developed copious, white, aerial mycelium that became dark gray after 4 to 6 days and formed black pycnidia after 25 days. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoidal to fusiform, externally smooth, thin walled, nonseptate, and measured 12.5 to 18.5 × 4.0 to 6.5 μm. Identity was confirmed by analysis of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITSI-5.8S-ITS2) and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α). BLAST searches at GenBank showed a high identity with reference sequences (ITS: >99%; EF1-α: 100%). Representative sequences of both regions were deposited in GenBank (ITS: Accession No. FJ842960 and FJ842961; EF1-α: Accession No. GU811148). Morphological and molecular results confirmed this species as Neofusicoccum parvum, reported as the anamorph of Botryosphaeria parva. Pathogenicity tests were conducted by stem inoculation of 2-year-old C. funebris seedlings. Mycelial plugs (4 mm in diameter) of N. parvum from actively growing colonies were applied to same-size bark wounds on the middle point of the stems. Control seedlings were inoculated with sterile PDA plugs. Inoculated and control seedlings (five each) were kept in a greenhouse and watered as needed. After 5 weeks, all C. funebris seedlings showed leaf wilting and dark vascular stem tissue. N. parvum was reisolated from all inoculated, symptomatic tissues, fulfilling Koch's postulates; no symptoms were visible in the control seedlings. N. parvum has previously been reported to cause canker and dieback disease of avocado (3), mango (2), and magenta cherry (Syzygium paniculatum) (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of N. parvum causing dieback of C. funebris in China. References: (1) R. C. Ploetz et al. Plant Pathol. 58:801, 2009. (2) B. Slippers et al. Abstract
Adiponectin is a polypeptide hormone that is secreted by adipocytes with insulin-sensitizing and anti-inflammatory properties. The current study was to further investigate the role of adiponectin on glucose uptake and its underlying mechanism by down-regulation of adiponectin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Transfection of short hairpin RNA (shRNA)-vector significantly decreased adiponectin mRNA expression and its protein level in the cells. The down-regulation of adiponectin markedly reduced the cellular glucose uptake rate and increased intracellular triglyceride content. To study the mechanism of the physiologic action of adiponectin, several key regulatory factors in insulin signaling pathway were examined. The mRNA expression of insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1 in both basal and insulin-stimulated states were down-regulated in the transfected cells (72% and 52% of controls, respectively), and the insulin-stimulated IRS-1 tyrosine phosphorylation was also significantly decreased. Adiponectin-deficient cells showed marked down-regulations of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha, glucose transporter (GLUT)-1, GLUT-4, hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), and adipose triglyceride lipase. These results thus demonstrated that transfection of shRNA-vector effectively reduced the expression of adiponectin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes accompanied with a significant decrease in cellular glucose uptake rate and an increase in intracellular triglyceride content. Our data also suggested that adiponectin deficiency impair insulin action in vitro probably through the IRS-1 pathway, and increase intracellular fat accumulation partially through HSL down-regulation.

Abstract
The influence of structure variation on the 1/f noise of nanometric boron doped hydrogenated polymorphous silicon (pm-Si:H) films was investigated. The films were grown by the conventional radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method. Raman spectroscopy was used to reveal the crystalline volume fraction (X(c)) and crystal size of the pm-Si:H. The measurement of optical and structure properties was carried out with spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) in the Tauc-Lorentz model. A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer was used to characterize the presence of nanostructure-sized silicon clusters in pm-Si:H film deposited on KBr substrate. The electrical properties of the films were measured using evaporated coplanar nickel as the electrode. A semiconductor system was designed to obtain the 1/f noise of pm-Si:H film as well as that of amorphous and microcrystalline silicon films. The results demonstrate that the 1/f noise of pm-Si:H is nearly as low as that of microcrystalline silicon and much lower than that of amorphous silicon. The disorder to order transition mechanism of crystallization was used to analyze the decrease of noise compared with amorphous silicon.

Abstract
Blood samples were collected from the unreleatled individuals in the Achang ethnic group in Yunnan Province. Genetic distribution for nine STR loci and amelogenin locus were determined in Achang ethnic group based on GeneScan. 96 samples were denatured of gel electrophoresis. The databanks in Achang ethnic group were generated by using GeneScan, genotyper, and genetic distribution analysis. 69 alleses and 166 genotypers were observed, with the corresponding frequency being 0.0050-0.6100 and 0.0100-0.3900. The average H is 0.7381. The comulated DP is 0.9999999. The comulated EPP is 0.9999989. The allele distribution of the loci was in good agreement with the Handy-Weibeng equilibrium. It is useful to establishing DNA databanks for studying gene natural resources, very valuable in the study of forensic science, anthropology and ethnic.

Abstract
A multitracer solution obtained from the nuclear reaction of selenium with 25-MeV/nucleon 40Ar ions was orally administered to normal and tumor-bearing Balb/c male mice. After 96 h, the mice were sacrificed and the elemental distribution was determined in various tissues, organs, and blood. The uptake of Na, Rb, Ga, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Fe, Zn, Y, Zr, Tc, Ru, Ag, and In in normal and, except for zinc, in tumor-bearing mice was simultaneously detected. Most elements were distributed in about the same manner in the skin and liver of animals in both groups. The distribution of Rb, Ga, V, Cr, Tc, and In showed little or no significant differences between the two study groups. The distribution of Na, Mn, Fe, Ag, Sc, and Co showed significant differences between normal and tumor-bearing mice. In the blood, spleen, and kidney of the normal mice, there was good absorption of Na, Mn, Fe, Ag, Co, and Zn. In the heart, these elements were well absorbed, except for Na and Mn.

Abstract
DNA typing by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was an extremely important technique used in forensic science identification, paternity test and gene diagnosis. While RFLP testing was a highly informative method, it traditionally had several disadvantages. It was time consuming and involved in working with radioactive phosphorus. A chemiluminescent detection of RFLP technique that was faster and safer than isotopic detection. The chemiluminescent system had a good sensitivity of detecting 3-25 ng sample DNA. The development of direct alkaline phosphatase (AP) conjugated probes and improved chemiluminescent substrates provided a non-isotopic detection method that equaled or surpassed 32P detection systems. Population genetic studies were performed using direct alkaline phosphatase (AP) conjugated oligonucleotide probes (AL1874, YNH24, TBQ7, VI) that recognized four hypervariable number of tandem repeats regions (D2S92, D2S44, D10S28, D17S79 loci) respectively in the human genome. DNA from approximately 480 unrelated individuals, subdivided into oriental group were digested with HaeIII enzyme and were successively hybridized to each DNA probe. The number of distinct DNA fragments identified for each of these regions varies from 37 to more than 78. An allele frequency distribution was determined for each locus with the computer and digitizer. The results showed significant differences between different races (American-blacks, Caucasians, and Orientals), in the pattern of distributions as well as in the relative frequency of the most common alleles of D2S92, D2S44, D10S28, and D17S79. The results showed that the analysis of these loci had useful applications in genetics and in forensic identity.

Abstract
Population genetic studies were performed in Chinese Han, Hui, Mongolian, Tibetan and Uygur. Allele frequency distributions were analyzed for ten loci, i.e., D3S1358, VWA, CSF1PO, FGA, THO1, TPOX, D5S818, D13S317 and D7S820 by GeneScan. The results showed that there were 60 STR alleles and 149 genotypes in Han; 63 STR alleles and 144 genotypes in Hui; 69 STR alleles and 173 genotypes in Mongolian; 77 STR alleles and 168 genotypes in Tibetan; 70 STR alleles and 148 genotypes in Uygur. Significant differences were identified among ethnic groups (African-American, US-Caucasian and Chinese-Oriental), but similarity was found among the five Chinese populations, and immunogenomics and pharmacogenomics studied in this report. These findings indicated that the nine STR loci and amelogenin locus were very useful for individual identification in forensic science.

Abstract
Genetic distributions for nine STR loci and Amelogenin locus were determined in a Chinese Han population based on DNA sequencing. The databanks in Chinese Population were generated by using Genescan, genotype and genetic distribution analysis. Allele frequency distribution was determined for 10 loci, such as D3S1358, VWA, FGA, Amelogenin, THO1, TPOX, CSF1PO, D5S818, D13S317 and D7S820. The results show significant differences between ethnic groups (African-American, US-Caucasian and Chinese Han) in the pattern of distribution as well as in the related frequency of the most common alleles of their STR loci. The probabilities of identity values for the population described in this section are 2.79 x 10(-10) (U.S-Caucasian), 1.23 x 10(-10) (African-American) and 0.5 x 10(-10) (Chinese Han). The results show the probability of Paternity Exclusion (PPE) values of 0.9998 (Chinese Han), 0.9996 (African-American) and 0.9994 (U.S-Caucasian). These results suggested that the nine STR loci and the Amelogenin locus are very useful for human identification, such as analyzing forensis casework, establishing DNA databanks, processing paternity test, evaluation linkage genetics, studying gene natural resources and monitoring bone marrow transplants.

Abstract
A trapped aqueous-organic biphase system for the continuous production of (S)-(+)-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) propionic acid (Naproxen) has been developed. The process consists of a stereoselective hydrolysis of the racemic Naproxen methyl ester by Candida rugosa lipase in a trapped aqueous-organic biphase system. The reaction has been carried out in a laboratory-scale continuous-flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The staring material has been supplied in and remaining substrate recovered by organic phase. YWG-C(6)H(5), a poorly polar synthetic support, has been employed to immobilize the lipase and to restrict the aqueous phase. Lipase immobilized on YWG-C(6)H(5) containing aqueous phase has been added into the CSTR to catalyze the hydrolysis. A dialysis membrane tube containing a continuous flow closed-loop buffer has been applied in the CSTR for the extraction of product and recruiting of the aqueous part consumed. Various reaction conditions have been studied. The activity of immobilized enzyme was effected by the polarity of support, the substrate concentration, logP value of organic phase and the product inhibition. At steady-state operating conditions, an initial conversion of 35% has been obtained. The CSTR was allowed to operate continuously for 60 days at 30 degrees C with a 30% loss of activity. The hydrolysis reaction yielded (S)-(+)-Naproxen with >90% enantiomeric excess and overall conversion of 30%.

Abstract
According to the 11th THW standard, we designed a pair of primers by which a segment of 256bp of HLA-DRB1, B3, B4, and B5 could be amplified simultaneously. Twenty-seven oligonucleotide probes were designed and synthesized for 39 loci on DRB1, 3 on DRB3, 1 on DRB4 and 3 on DRB5. A PCR-SSO DNA typing protocol was built, which met the standard of HLA class II DNA typing in 11th IHW. With this method, 186 of Chinese (Han) in Xi'an, 169 of Hui in Ningxia, 200 of Uygur in Xinjiang, and 188 of Tibetan in Tibet were detected with a comparison study. The genetic distribution of 46 loci of DRB in four ethnic healthy populations were surveyed. No diversity has been found between Han and Hui in DRB. DRB1 * 02(16.9%), DRB1 * 07 (13.1%), and DRB1 * 09(12.0%) were the higher frequent loci in Han. More DRB loci were detected in Tibetan but without higher loci as in Han and Hui. The DRB polymorphism of Uygur population was similar to Caucasian. A discriminative highest frequency of DRB1 * 07(23.8%) was found in Uygur, which implied a selection happened.

Abstract
A stereoselective hydrolysis of the racemic naproxen methyl ester by immobilized lipase from Candida rugosa in a low aqueous-organic biphase system was studied. Support polar, water content, the logP value of organic phase and product inhibition effected the activity of immobilized enzyme. According to these reaction conditions, a low aqueous-organic biphase system for the continuous production of (S)-(+)-Naproxen was developed. The reaction was carried out in a continuous-flow closed-loop 50 mL stirred bioreactor packed with YWG-C6H5, a poorly polar synthetic support on which the lipase had been immobilized by adsorption. The aqueous phase was permanently remained in the reactor associated with the immobilized enzyme particles; the organic phase containing substrate was pumped through this reactor and emerged with the products. The continous-flow stirred bioreactor containing 75 mg lipase was allowed to operate continuously for 60 days at 30 degrees C with a 25% loss of activity, 900 mg of (S)-(+)-Naproxen (eep 95%) were producted.

Abstract
We devised a method to make a gradient water content model of the rat brain by perfusing osmotic NaCl solution from the left ventricule. Using this model we measured the water content and magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) of the frontal lobe and the pons as examples of gray and white matter, respectively. When we perfused five levels of osmotic NaCl solution (0, 0.9, 1.8, 3.6 and 7.2%) to respective groups of four rats, mean water content decreased from 81.5% at 0% to 75.9% at 7.2% NaCl in the frontal lobe and from 74.1% to 61.0% in the pons, while MTR increased from 21.5% to 24.2% in the frontal lobe and from 22.9% to 27.3% in the pons. Thus water content was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in the frontal lobe than the pons at each level of NaCl concentration, and MTR was significantly higher in the pons than the frontal lobe (p < 0.05 approximately 0.01, except at 0%). Further, the grade of alteration was higher in the pons than the frontal lobe for both water content and MTR. Excellent correlations between MTR and water content were observed with coefficients of -0.75 and -0.82 for the frontal lobe and pons, respectively, and the regression lines showed higher position and slope in the frontal lobe than the pons. From these results we concluded that the pons is rich in free water of extracellular fluid that moves easily between the myelin sheath, whereas in the frontal lobe, water is so diffusely mingled with membranes and favorable to bound water that the magnetization transfer effect is more effective, yielding a higher MTR for the same water content and showing greater change in MTR for the same change in water content as the pons.

Abstract
AIM To study the effect of U-73122, putative phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor, on cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCC). METHODS To record whole cell calcium current (ICa) by perforated patch-clamp and to measure cytosolic free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) with Fura-2. RESULTS U-73122 inhibited KCl-induced and Bay-K-8644-induced increase in [Ca2+]i dose-dependently. U-73122 decreased markedly depolarization-induced ICa both in RINm5F and porcine myometrial cells in a concentration-dependent manner. The effect of U-73122 was more potent in porcine myometrial cells than that in RINm5F cells. U-73343 (an analog of U-73122), that does not inhibit PLC, also reduced the ICa by 50%. CONCLUSION U-73122 inhibited VDCC and [Ca2+]i in both RINm5F and porcine myometrial cells.

Abstract
The changes of hepatic hemodynamics and hemorrheology were investigated in dogs with acute liver damage induced by acetaminophen. There were remarkable disturbance in liver circulation and hemorrheological abnormality occurring in both slight and severe liver damage. The study indicated that the degree of disturbance in liver circulation as well as in hemorheological change is positively correlated with the severity of liver damage. For example, marked increase in blood viscosity linked with elevated fibrinogen level appeared in slight liver damage, whereas reduced blood viscosity associated with decreased plasma fibrinogen level and hematocrit occurred in severe liver damage. This study also revealed that the increase of portal venous resistance (PVR) and the disturbance of liver circulation in slight liver damage were chiefly related to the increase of blood viscosity and the increase of PVR in severe liver damage was mainly associated with the reduction of the radius of portal vein.

Abstract
Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) was examined at 86 loci distributed on every chromosomal arm in 50 human ovarian tumors. Frequent allele losses were observed on chromosomes 13q (42%), 17p (42%), 17q (45%), and Xp (41%). Deletion mapping on chromosome 17 revealed a candidate gene on the long arm distal to D17S41/S74 for ovarian cancer which is distant from the locus for early onset breast cancer. LOH on chromosome 17q was found to be concordant with LOH on chromosomes 3p, 13q, 17p and Xp suggesting that it may be an early event in neoplastic development. These findings indicate that multiple tumor-suppressor genes for ovarian cancer possibly exist on chromosomes 13q, 17, and/or Xp and provide the basis for the identification of candidate gene(s) associated with ovarian cancer. The chromosomal mechanisms resulting in allele losses in ovarian cancer include deletion, deletion/duplication, mitotic recombination and monosomy, in concordance with the developed genetic model.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested that hepatic alpha and beta adrenergic receptors is stable and it is in dynamic equilibrium under normal conditions. However, at a pathological condition these receptors may be changed. We studied the changes of adrenergic receptors in the rat liver with acute injury and in endotoxemia by light microscopic autoradiography. Our experimental results reveal that in the liver of rats with acute injury and in endotoxemia there were changes in varying degrees of alpha and beta adrenoceptors. Moreover, the changes were not uniform in various structures of the rat liver. Glucagon can keep adrenergic receptors stable on hepatic cells and muscular cells of blood vessels in the rat liver. Our experiment provides evidence for clinical use of adrenoceptor antagonists in the treatment of acute and chronic liver disease.

Abstract
Efficacy of the conjugate anti-AFP-F(ab)'2 with adriamycin, anti-AFP-F(ab)'2-adr, against transplantable tumors was studied in mice. The results showed that LD50 of anti-AFP-F(ab)'2-adr in mice was 7.43 mg/kg and that anti-AFP-F(ab)'2-adr in a dose of 1/10-1/5 LD50 could inhibit the growth of transplanted hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, anti-AFP-F(ab)'2-adr with local application of AFP could markedly inhibit the growth of transplanted Ehrlich ascites cancer. From the above it is suggested that anti-AFP-F(ab)'2-adr can be used to treat hepatic carcinoma with satisfactory results.

Trisomy 12, identified as a sole abnormality in 6 tumors, is likely a specific karyotypic change in different benign and borderline tumors and may well be a primary chromosomal lesion in these tumors. The possible association between amplification of the proto-oncogene K-ras-2 which is located on chromosome 12 and trisomy 12 was investigated. DNA blotting analysis of 64 tumors indicates that trisomy 12 does not seem to be related to K-ras-2 amplification in ovarian tumors. K-ras-2 amplification was observed in 3 high-grade tumors from 3 patients with metastases.

Abstract
To gain a broad spectrum on allelic loss of specific loci in ovarian tumors, we initially examined DNA from 23 pairs of ovarian tumors and matched peripheral blood lymphocyte samples from the same patients, using 27 polymorphic DNA markers distributed on 13 chromosomes. Significant high frequency of allelic deletion (22%-44%) at chromosome 13 loci (D13S31, D13S32, D13S33, and D13S34) at bands q12-q34 was observed in tumor tissues. These results led us to investigate the loss of heterozygosity at the retinoblastoma (RB) locus in ovarian tumors, because the RB gene is a tumor-suppressor gene located at 13q14. Analysis of the variable number of tandem repeat sequence polymorphism in intron 20 in the RB gene revealed that 6 (30%) of 20 patients with informative samples showed allelic loss at the RB locus in their tumor tissues. This loss, of relatively high frequency, suggests that the RB gene, or a closely linked gene, seems to be involved in the development of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Among 60 patients with chronic active hepatitis B, 43 were of the severe type, 17 were of cholestasis type. Each type was divided randomly into two groups: therapeutic and control. The former received both conventional supporting therapy and combination of phentolamine (20-30 mg/day) and angelicini (150-450 mg/day). The latter was only treated with conventional supporting therapy. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and platelet agglutination test were performed in 10 patients respectively. DSA demonstrated that liver sinusoids were expanded and the vascular bed round the sinusoids were also enlarged in diameter following instillation of phentolamine. It was also shown that angelicini could suppress the second phase of platelet agglutination. These indicated that phentolamine and angelicini could improve the liver microcirculation in different way. The incidence of survival between therapeutic and the control group was 57.14% and 31.82% respectively (P less than 0.05).

Abstract
The experimental study was aimed at elucidating the effects of phentolamine and vasopressin used separately or in combination on hepatic and systemic hemodynamics in cirrhotic portal hypertensive dogs. The results showed that either of the two drugs used separately could lead to reduction in portal venous pressure and could also influence systemic hemodynamics or lower hepatic blood flow. When phentolamine in combination with vasopressin was administered, no side-effect could be found on hepatic and systemic hemodynamics, suggesting that the drugs used in combination could efficaciously decrease portal hypertension and counteract their respective side-effect. This combination therapy will be useful in treating bleeding from esophageal variceal rupture in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension.

Abstract
We observed the effect of pituitrin and phentolamine alone or in combination on wedged hepatic venous pressure (WHVP) and systemic hemodynamics in 28 patients with cirrhosis. The results showed that either of these drugs used separately could lead to reduction in WHVP, each of them could also cause by-effects on systemic hemodynamics. When pituitrin in combination with phentolamine was administered, no change could be found in inferior vena cava pressure, mean arterial pressure, pulse rate and cardiac index. This suggested that pituitrin in combination with phentolamine could not only efficaciously decrease WHVP, but also counteract side effects on systemic hemodynamics of each other and improve hepatic microcirculation. Our study provided evidence for the usefulness of the combination of the two drugs in controlling bleeding from esophagus varices.

Abstract
The isolation and purification of methane monooxygenase from a type I methanotroph Methylomonas GYJ3 to near homogeneity is reported. The isoelectric focusing in flat-bed granulated gels has resolved the methane monooxygenase into three protein components. The specific activity of the enzyme is 198.4 n mol per min per mg protein, degree of purification 4.13-fold. Recovery of the focused proteins is high and elution simple. Several purification steps may be omitted from the previously published scheme by other techniques.

Abstract
Eight dogs with cirrhotic portal hypertension were investigated for hemorrheology and hepatic hemodynamics. The whole-blood viscosity decreased in dogs with liver cirrhosis. The decrease in hematocrit may be responsible for low blood viscosity in cirrhosis. It was also found that the increase in portal venous resistance in cirrhosis was related to the anatomical changes of portal venous bed, but not to blood viscosity. Moreover, our experimental results indicated that raising blood viscosity might be one of the important measures for the treatment of esophageal variceal hemorrhage and for the prevention of rebleeding.

Abstract
(S)-1-(3-hydroxy-2-phosphonylmethoxypropyl)cytosine, HPMPC, and two HPMPC-related nucleoside analogs, (S)-9-(3-hydroxy-2-phosphonylmethoxypropyl)adenine, HPMPA, and (2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)guanine, PMEG, were evaluated for their antiviral activities against guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) infection in guinea pig embryo (GPE) cells and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in human diploid fibroblast (MRC-5) cells. DHPG, 9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine, was used for comparison. The antiviral activity of HPMPC against GPCMV infection in vivo and its toxicity to Hartley guinea pigs were also evaluated. The 50% antiviral effective doses (ED50) of HPMPC, HPMPA, PMEG and DHPG against GPCMV infection in GPE cells were 0.22, 1.4, 0.07 and 62 microM, respectively; and against HCMV infection in MRC-5 cells, the ED50s were 0.51, 0.72, 0.01 and 17.5 microM, respectively. Their cytotoxic doses (CyD50) in GPE replicating cells were 84, 35, 1.4 and 700 microM, respectively and in MRC-5 cells were approximately 114, 31, 0.86 and 750 microM, respectively. Based on their calculated therapeutic indexes, HPMPC was the most potent and selective of the four compounds tested. In vivo, during acute infection, the spleen indexes of all infected animals that were treated with 1.25 to 5.0 mg/kg/day of HPMPC for 5 days were significantly reduced as compared with sham-treated animals. Virus infectivity titers in blood and various tissues of infected animals treated with HPMPC, 2.5 or 1.25 mg/kg/day were not significantly lower than those of the infected, sham-treated animals; with 5 mg/kg/day, infectivity titers in the blood, spleen, and salivary gland were significantly lower in HPMPC-treated than in sham-treated animals. However, HPMPC was toxic to guinea pigs especially at doses of 5 to 10 mg/kg/day. These data showed that HPMPC was highly active and selective in cultured guinea pig cells and human fibroblast cells against CMV infection but did not effectively inhibit GPCMV infection in guinea pigs at minimum toxic concentrations.

Abstract
A total of 11 techniques including 57 items for zygosity diagnosis was employed in two sets of triplet. Namely, placenta-fetal membrane, LDH isoenzymes, etc. The authors made an investigation in detail on the pedigree history of polyembryony and systematic analysis of two sets of male triplets. The conclusion was that the first triplet came from a single ovum, whereas the second triplet developed from double ova. Different methods for the zygosity diagnosis were discussed. It was considered that there was hereditary influence in the occurrence of triplets developing either from a single ovum or from multiple ova.

Abstract
Recently a conventional method for the laboratory diagnosis of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection was improved by using centrifugation culture to enhance viral adsorption and by detecting HCMV early antigen and DNA. Comparison of the sensitivity of three rapid methods using commercial diagnostic reagents for the detection of HCMV early antigen (EA), late antigen (LA), and DNA was quantitatively evaluated in centrifugation cultures of human fibroblast cells (MRC-5) infected with HCMV. HCMV-EA was first detected 4 hours after infection, and the number of antigen-positive cells increased rapidly thereafter. Using biotinylated DNA probe, viral DNA was first detected 12 hours postinfection; the number of DNA-positive cells increased slowly. HCMV-LA was first seen 48 hours postinfection, and the number of LA-positive cells also increased thereafter. Thus detection of HCMV-EA was the most rapid and sensitive method for HCMV diagnosis. Several chemical compounds have been used to enhance HCMV replication. The effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dexamethasone (DEX), 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU), 5-fluoro-deoxyuridine (FdU), and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on HCMV-EA induction was evaluated in centrifugation cultures of MRC-5 cells infected with HCMV. Infected cells treated with 1% DMSO alone or with DMSO plus DEX (10(-5) M) have been shown to increase the number of HCMV-EA-positive cells three- to fivefold over the untreated control cultures. The enhancing effects of Ara-C, BrdU, and BrdU plus FdU were demonstrated only occasionally.

Abstract
The aim of this study is at establishing cirrhotic portal hypertension with common bile duct ligation in 9 mongrel dogs to measure the plasma catecholamine level. On the basis of experimental study, phentolamine, the alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist, was used to treat 14 patients with liver cirrhosis complicating bleeding from esophageal variceal rupture. The results had been shown that the levels of noradrenaline (NE) in both portal and inferior caval vein were increased more significantly in the cirrhotic stage than in the precirrhotic stage. The mechanism of the NE elevation might be due to increased release from enhancement of sympathetic nervous activity. Our clinical data have also been demonstrated that the effect of phentolamine on the 12 cases of variceal hemorrhage is markedly efficacious with no longer bleeding. Only 2 patients had showed no good reaction neither to phentolamine nor to pituiterin, eventually died of liver failure. It is conceivable that phentolamine has the same efficacy in treatment of esophageal variceal bleeding as pituitrin. But less side effect than the latter.
