[Clinical characteristics of children with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection in Yunnan]

Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics of 130 children with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection in Yunnan province after the relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions, and analyze the risk factors for mortality. Methods: This study is a retrospective case summary that analyzed the demographic data, underlying diseases, clinical diagnoses, disease outcomes, and laboratory results of 130 children with severe COVID-19 infections admitted to nine top-tier hospitals in Yunnan Province from December 2022 to March 2023. According to the prognosis, the patients were divided into survival group and death group. The clinical and laboratory data between the two groups were compared, and the risk factors of death were evaluated. The χ2 test and Mann-Whitney U test were employed to compare between groups, while Spearman correlation test and multiple Logistic regression were used to analyze the risk factors for death. The predictive value of independent risk factors was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The 130 severe patients included 80 males and 50 females with an onset age of 28.0 (4.5, 79.5) months. There were 97 cases in the survival group and 33 cases in the death group with no significant differences in gender and age between the two groups (P>0.05). Twenty-five cases (19.2%) out of the 130 patients had underlying diseases, and the number with underlying diseases was significantly higher in death group than in survival group (36.4% (12/33) vs. 13.4%(13/97), χ2=8.36, P=0.004). The vaccination rate in the survival group was significantly higher than that in the death group (86.1% (31/36) vs. 7/17, χ2=9.38, P=0.002). A total of 42 cases (32.3%) of the 130 patients were detected to be infected with other pathogens, but there was no significant difference in the incidence of co-infection between the death group and the survival group (39.3%(13/33) vs. 29.9% (29/97), χ2=1.02, P>0.05). Among the 130 cases, severe respiratory cases were the most common 66 cases (50.8%), followed by neurological severe illnesses 34 cases (26.2%) and circulatory severe 13 cases (10%). Compared to the survival group, patients in the death group had a significantly higher levels of neutrophil, ferritin, procalcitonin, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase isoenzyme, B-type natriuretic peptide, interleukin-6 and 10 (6.7 (4.0, 14.0) vs. 3.0 (1.6, 7.0)×109/L, 479 (298, 594) vs. 268 (124, 424) μg/L, 4.8 (1.7, 10.6) vs. 2.0 (1.1, 3.1) μg/L, 66 (20, 258) vs. 23 (15, 49) U/L, 464 (311, 815) vs. 304 (252, 388) g/L, 71(52, 110) vs. 24(15, 48) U/L, 484 (160, 804) vs. 154 (26, 440) ng/L, 43 (23, 102) vs. 19 (13, 27) ng/L, 216 (114, 318) vs. 86 (45, 128) ng/L, Z=-4.21, -3.67, -3.76, -3.31, -3.75, -5.74, -3.55, -4.65, -5.86, all P<0.05). The correlated indexes were performed by multivariate Logistic regression and the results showed that vaccination was a protective factor from death in severe cases (OR=0.01, 95%CI 0-0.97, P=0.049) while pediatric sequential organ failure assessment (PSOFA) (OR=3.31, 95%CI 1.47-7.47, P=0.004), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (OR=1.56, 95%CI 1.05-2.32, P=0.029) and D dimer (OR=1.49, 95%CI 1.00-1.02, P=0.033) were independent risk factors for death (all P<0.05). The area under the curve of the three independent risk factors for predicting death were 0.86 (95%CI 0.79-0.94), 0.89 (95%CI 0.84-0.95) and 0.87 (95%CI 0.80-0.94), all P<0.001, and the cut-off values were 4.50, 3.66 and 4.69 mg/L, respectively. Conclusions: Severe SARS-CoV-2 infection can occur in children of all ages, primarily affecting the respiratory system, but can also infect the nervous system, circulatory system or other systems. Children who died had more severe inflammation, tissue damage and coagulation disorders. The elevations of PSOFA, NLR and D dimer were independent risk factors for death in severe children.

Small GTPase Rab7 is involved in stress adaptation to carbon starvation to ensure the induced cellulase biosynthesis in Trichoderma reesei

BACKGROUND

The saprophytic filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei represents one of the most prolific cellulase producers. The bulk production of lignocellulolytic enzymes by T. reesei not only relies on the efficient transcription of cellulase genes but also their efficient secretion after being translated. However, little attention has been paid to the functional roles of the involved secretory pathway in the high-level production of cellulases in T. reesei. Rab GTPases are key regulators in coordinating various vesicle trafficking associated with the eukaryotic secretory pathway. Specifically, Rab7 is a representative GTPase regulating the transition of the early endosome to the late endosome followed by its fusion to the vacuole as well as homotypic vacuole fusion. Although crosstalk between the endosomal/vacuolar pathway and the secretion pathway has been reported, the functional role of Rab7 in cellulase production in T. reesei remains unknown.

RESULTS

A TrRab7 was identified and characterized in T. reesei. TrRab7 was shown to play important roles in T. reesei vegetative growth and vacuole morphology. Whereas knock-down of Trrab7 significantly compromised the induced production of T. reesei cellulases, overexpression of the key transcriptional activator, Xyr1, restored the production of cellulases in the Trrab7 knock-down strain (Ptcu-rab7KD) on glucose, indicating that the observed defective cellulase biosynthesis results from the compromised cellulase gene transcription. Down-regulation of Trrab7 was also found to make T. reesei more sensitive to various stresses including carbon starvation. Interestingly, overexpression of Snf1, a serine/threonine protein kinase known as an energetic sensor, partially restored the cellulase production of Ptcu-rab7KD on Avicel, implicating that TrRab7 is involved in an energetic adaptation to carbon starvation which contributes to the successful cellulase gene expression when T. reesei is transferred from glucose to cellulose.

CONCLUSIONS

TrRab7 was shown to play important roles in T. reesei development and a stress response to carbon starvation resulting from nutrient shift. This adaptation may allow T. reesei to successfully initiate the inducing process leading to efficient cellulase production. The present study provides useful insights into the functional involvement of the endosomal/vacuolar pathway in T. reesei development and hydrolytic enzyme production.

Application of early warning signs to physiological contexts: a comparison of multivariate indices in patients on long-term hemodialysis

Early warnings signs (EWSs) can anticipate abrupt changes in system state, known as "critical transitions," by detecting dynamic variations, including increases in variance, autocorrelation (AC), and cross-correlation. Numerous EWSs have been proposed; yet no consensus on which perform best exists. Here, we compared 15 multivariate EWSs in time series of 763 hemodialyzed patients, previously shown to present relevant critical transition dynamics. We calculated five EWSs based on AC, six on variance, one on cross-correlation, and three on AC and variance. We assessed their pairwise correlations, trends before death, and mortality predictive power, alone and in combination. Variance-based EWSs showed stronger correlations (r = 0.663 ± 0.222 vs. 0.170 ± 0.205 for AC-based indices) and a steeper increase before death. Two variance-based EWSs yielded HR95 > 9 (HR95 standing for a scale-invariant metric of hazard ratio), but combining them did not improve the area under the receiver-operating curve (AUC) much compared to using them alone (AUC = 0.798 vs. 0.796 and 0.791). Nevertheless, the AUC reached 0.825 when combining 13 indices. While some indicators did not perform overly well alone, their addition to the best performing EWSs increased the predictive power, suggesting that indices combination captures a broader range of dynamic changes occurring within the system. It is unclear whether this added benefit reflects measurement error of a unified phenomenon or heterogeneity in the nature of signals preceding critical transitions. Finally, the modest predictive performance and weak correlations among some indices call into question their validity, at least in this context.

Immunogenicity and lot-to-lot consistency of booster shot with Sabin inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine in Chinese children aged 18-24 Months: A phase Ⅳ clinical trial

BACKGROUND

There has been no data on the immunogenicity and safety of the 4th booster dose of the sIPV immunization in 18-24 months old children in post-marketing studies of large cohort providing with robust results.

METHOD

In a phase Ⅳ randomized, double-blinded clinical trial, 1200 participants aged 2 months were immunized with three consecutive doses of sIPV at 2, 3, and 4 months old to complete primary immunization. Out of the 1200 participants, 1129 received the 4th dose of sIPV as booster immunization. Immunogenicity was evaluated in 1100 participants.

RESULTS

Seropositive rates of the anti-poliovirus type 1, 2, and 3 neutralizing antibodies were 99.9 %, 98.0 %, 98.2 %, respectively, with GMTs of 557.0, 146.1, 362.0 one year after primary vaccination. After booster vaccination between 18 and 24 months old, the seropositive rates for 3 types all reached 100.0 %, with GMTs of 8343.6, 5039.6, 5492.0, respectively. Particularly for the anti-poliovirus type 2 antibody, the GMT was 230.4 after primary immunization, maintained to 146.1 one year after primary immunization, and increased to as high as 5039.6 after booster vaccination. The GMT ratios between each batch groups after booster immunization were between 0.67 and 1.50, meeting the immunological equivalence criteria. The incidence rate of adverse reaction was 23.0 %, which was comparable to those in the phase Ⅲ trial but had a lower incidence. Furthermore, no SUSAR was reported in this study.

INTERPRETATION

In conclusion, as the anti-poliovirus antibodies gradually waned one year post sIPV primary vaccination, especially the type 2 antibody waned to a very low level, suggesting the importance of the booster immunization for children at the age of 18-24 months old. The booster shot can greatly enhance the antibody level and protect children from the potential risk of infection with WPV and VDPV by supplementing the anti-poliovirus type 2 immunity gap in the current real world. Thermoresponsive Skin-like Fabric for Personal Comfort and Protection

Acting as a "second skin", clothing plays an indispensable role in providing comfort and protection in the wide range of environments in which we live. However, comfort and protection are often competing requirements and are difficult to improve simultaneously. By mimicking the exceptional thermoresponsive one-way liquid transport property of human skin, here we developed a scalable and ecofriendly skin-like fabric that has a tunable directional water transport rate while having excellent water repellency. The water transport rate is also temperature-responsive, just like skin. As the temperature increases, the wettability gradient in the spatially distributed channels (acting like "sweat glands") increases, promoting sweat transport and evaporative heat dissipation. As the temperature decreases, on the other hand, the wettability gradient diminishes, reducing liquid transport and evaporative heat loss, thereby promoting heat retention. The fabric is highly suitable for sportswear and functional clothing and can have wider applications, such as oil-water separation, fog harvesting, etc.

Quantitative Analysis of the Instant and Persistent Inhibition Effects of Maternal Poliovirus Antibodies on the Immune Response in a Phase IV Trial of a Sabin Strain-Based Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine

BACKGROUND

An inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine made from Sabin strains (sIPVs) has widely been used in China since 2015. However, the quantitative data on the instant and persistent inhibition effects of maternal poliovirus antibodies on the immune response to sIPV priming and booster vaccination have not been available yet.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we aim to explore and quantify the instant and persistent inhibition effect of maternal poliovirus antibodies on the immune response elicited by sIPV primary and booster vaccination.

METHODS

The immunogenicity data consisting of the days 0 and 30 after the prime and booster vaccination of the sIPV in a phase IV trial were pooled for a quantitative analysis of the inhibition effect of maternal poliovirus antibody. The geometric mean ratio (GMR) was calculated using linear regression models, representing that every 2-fold higher maternal poliovirus antibody titer may result in a (1-GMR) lower postimmunization antibody titer.

RESULTS

The GMRs for poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 were 0.79 (0.77-0.82), 0.85 (0.81-0.89), and 0.87 (0.83-0.91) at 30 days after the priming series, 0.86 (0.83-0.89), 0.81 (0.76-0.85), and 0.86 (0.80-0.93) at one year after the priming series, and 0.96 (0.94-0.99), 0.89 (0.86-0.93), and 0.98 (0.93-1.03) at 30 days after the booster dose. The inhibition effect continued to exist until the booster dose 1 year later, and such a persistent inhibition effect was almost attenuated for poliovirus types 1 and 3, and partly reduced for type 2 at 30 days after the booster dose.

CONCLUSION

A wider interval between the four sIPV doses might be a consideration for reducing the effect of maternal antibodies and subsequently eliciting and maintaining higher antibody levels to protect against poliovirus transmission and infection at the final stage of polio eradication in the global world. Circ_0005015 upregulates BACH1 to promote aggressive behaviors in glioblastoma by sponging microRNA-382-5p

To investigate the potential role and molecular mechanism of circ_0005015 in GBM progression. Circ_0005015, microRNA-382-5p (miR-382-5p), and BTB domain and CNC homolog 1 (BACH1) levels were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Cell proliferation was determined by MTT, colony formation, and EdU assays. Cell apoptosis was analyzed using flow cytometry. Cell migration and invasion were assessed using wound healing and transwell assays. Glucose accumulation and lactate levels were examined by the corresponding kit. RNA pull-down and dual-luciferase reporter assays were performed to confirm the interaction between miR-382-5p and circ_0005015 or BACH1. Protein levels of MMP9, PCNA, and BACH1 were examined using western blot assay. Role of circ_0005015 on tumor growth in vivo was analyzed using a xenograft tumor model. Circ_0005015 content was up-regulated in GBM patients and cells, its knockdown restrained GBM cell proliferation, migration, invasion, glycolysis, and triggered apoptosis. Mechanistically, we found that circ_0005015 could directly interact with miR-382-5p and serve as a miRNA sponge to regulate BACH1 expression. In addition, circ_0005015 knockdown might repress tumor growth in vivo. Circ_0005015 boosted GBM progression via binding to miR-382-5p to up-regulate BACH1, which may offer new effective targets for GBM treatment.

A Cross-Plane Design for Wearable Thermoelectric Generators with High Stretchability and Output Performance

Stretchable wearable thermoelectric (TE) generators (WTEGs) without compromising output performance for real wearables have attracted much attention recently. Herein, a 3D thermoelectric generator with biaxial stretchability is constructed on the device level. Ultraflexible inorganic Ag/Ag2 Se strips are sewn into the soft purl-knit fabric, in which the thermoelectric legs are aligned in the direction of vertical heat flux. A stable and sufficient temperature gradient of 5.2 °C across the WTEG is therefore achieved when contacted with the wrist at a room temperature of 26.3 °C. The prepared TEG generates a high power density of 10.02 W m-2 at a vertical temperature gradient of 40 K. Meanwhile, the reliable energy harvesting promises a variation of less than 10% under the biaxial stretching up to 70% strain via leveraging the combined effects of the stretchability of knit fabric and geometry of TE strips. The knit fabric-supported TEG enables a seamless conformation to the skin as well as efficient body heat harvesting, which can provide sustainable energy to low power consumption wearable electronics.

Drug-tolerant persister cells in cancer: the cutting edges and future directions

Drug-tolerant persister (DTP) cell populations were originally discovered in antibiotic-resistant bacterial biofilms. Similar populations with comparable features have since been identified among cancer cells and have been linked with treatment resistance that lacks an underlying genomic alteration. Research over the past decade has improved our understanding of the biological roles of DTP cells in cancer, although clinical knowledge of the role of these cells in treatment resistance remains limited. Nonetheless, targeting this population is anticipated to provide new treatment opportunities. In this Perspective, we aim to provide a clear definition of the DTP phenotype, discuss the underlying characteristics of these cells, their biomarkers and vulnerabilities, and encourage further research on DTP cells that might improve our understanding and enable the development of more effective anticancer therapies.

Modeling the Functional Network for Spatial Navigation in the Human Brain

Spatial navigation is a complex function involving the integration and manipulation of multisensory information. Using different navigation tasks, many promising results have been achieved on the specific functions of various brain regions (e.g., hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and parahippocampal place area). Recently, it has been suggested that a non-aggregate network process involving multiple interacting brain regions may better characterize the neural basis of this complex function. This paper presents an integrative approach for constructing and analyzing the functionally-specific network for spatial navigation in the human brain. Briefly, this integrative approach consists of three major steps: 1) to identify brain regions important for spatial navigation (nodes definition); 2) to estimate functional connectivity between each pair of these regions and construct the connectivity matrix (network construction); 3) to investigate the topological properties (e.g., modularity and small worldness) of the resulting network (network analysis). The presented approach, from a network perspective, could help us better understand how our brain supports flexible navigation in complex and dynamic environments, and the revealed topological properties of the network can also provide important biomarkers for guiding early identification and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in clinical practice.

Comparing recombinant human rabies monoclonal antibody (ormutivimab) with human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) for postexposure prophylaxis: A phase III, randomized, double-blind, non-inferiority trial

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of an anti-rabies monoclonal antibody (mAb), ormutivimab, compared with human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG).

METHODS

This phase III trial was designed as a randomized, double-blind, non-inferiority clinical trial in patients aged ≥18 years with suspected World Health Organization category Ⅲ rabies exposure. The participants were randomized 1:1 to ormutivimab and HRIG groups. After thorough wound washing and injection of ormutivimab/HRIG on day 0, the vaccination was administered on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28. The primary endpoint was the adjusted geometric mean concentration (GMC) of rabies virus-neutralizing activity (RVNA) on day 7. The endpoint of safety included the occurrence of adverse reactions and serious adverse events.

RESULTS

A total of 720 participants were recruited. The adjusted-GMC of RVNA (0.41 IU/ml) on day 7 in ormutivimab group was not inferior to that in the HRIG group (0.41 IU/ml), with ratio of adjusted-GMC of 1.01 (95% confidence interval: 0.91, 1.14). The seroconversion rate of the ormutivimab group was higher than that of the HRIG group on days 7, 14, and 42. Most local injection sites and systemic adverse reactions reported from both groups were mild to moderate in severity.

CONCLUSION

ormutivimab + vaccine can protect victims aged ≥18 years with category Ⅲ suspected rabies exposure as a component of postexposure prophylaxis. ormutivimab has a weaker influence on the immunity response of rabies vaccines.

Different sedation profiles with ciprofol compared to propofol represented by objective sedation level assessments by BIS and its acute hemodynamic impact in 3 escalated doses of ciprofol and propofol in healthy subjects: a single-center, open-label, randomized, 2-stage, 2-way crossover trial

OBJECTIVE

To compare the sedation profiles and the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and safety characteristics of ciprofol and propofol at 3 escalated dose levels in healthy Chinese male subjects.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Eighteen subjects were planned to be enrolled into 3 dose groups in turn: group 1 (ciprofol-0.4 mg/kg vs. propofol-2.0 mg/kg), group 2 (ciprofol-0.6 mg/kg vs. propofol-3.0 mg/kg) and group 3 (ciprofol-0.8 mg/kg vs. propofol-4.0 mg/kg). They were randomly assigned into a ciprofol or propofol group in a ratio of 1:1, with sequences of ciprofol-propofol or propofol-ciprofol, separated with a washout period of at least 48 h.

RESULTS

A total of 19 subjects were enrolled and 18 completed the trial. The median time to being fully alert after induction by ciprofol was longer than for propofol. The bispectral index (BIS) recovered significantly slower with ciprofol than with propofol 5 min and 10 min after reaching its lowest points. Systolic blood pressure (group 1: p=0.041; group 2: p=0.015; group 3: p=0.004) and mean arterial pressures (group 1: p=0.026; group 2: p=0.015; group 3: p=0.004) measured by the area under the curve below the baseline during the 2 min after induction were significantly less for ciprofol compared to propofol, but a significant change in diastolic blood pressure was only observed in group 3 (p=0.002). Eighteen (100.0%) subjects experienced 47 ciprofol-related treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and 17 (94.4%) subjects had 54 propofol-related TEAEs, which were mainly hypotension, involuntary movements, respiratory depression, and pain at the injection site with severity of grade 1 or 2.

CONCLUSIONS

Ciprofol may be well tolerated at higher doses in the clinical practice and exhibited significantly different sedation profiles to propofol.

[Clinical efficacy and safety of venetoclax combined with multidrug chemotherapy in the treatment of 15 patients with relapsed or refractory early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia]

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of Venetoclax combined with multidrug chemotherapy in patients with relapsed or refractory early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (R/R ETP-ALL) . Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 15 patients with R/R ETP-ALL who received Venetoclax combined with multidrug chemotherapy from December 2018 to February 2022. Among them, eight cases were combined with demethylated drugs, four cases were combined with demethylated drugs and HAAG chemotherapy regimen, two cases were combined with demethylated drugs and CAG regimen, and one case was combined with Cladribine. Specific usage and dosage of Venetoclax: 100 mg on day 1, 200 mg on day 2, 400 mg on day 3-28, orally; when combined with azole antifungal drugs, dosage was reduced to 100 mg/d. Results: Fifteen patients (10 males and 5 females) with R/R ETP-ALL were treated with Venetoclax and multidrug chemotherapy with a median age of 35 (12-42) years old. Of 4 refractory and 11 relapsed patients, the efficacy was evaluated on the 21th day following combined chemotherapy: the overall response rate, the complete response (CR) rate, and the CR with incomplete hematological recovery (CRi) rate were 67.7% (10/15), 60.0% (9/15), and 6.7% (1/15), respectively. For the overall study population, the 12-month overall survival (OS) rate was 60.0%, and the median OS was 17.7 months. The disease-free survival (DFS) rate of all CR patients at 12 months was 60.0%, and the median DFS did not reach. About 14 patients had Ⅲ-Ⅳ hematological toxicity, but these adverse reactions were all controllable. No adverse reaction in the nervous system and tumor lysis syndrome occurred in this study, and no adverse reaction of organs above grade Ⅲ occurred. Conclusion: Venetoclax combined with multidrug chemotherapy may be a safe and promising treatment option for patients with R/R ETP-ALL.

Immunotherapy for Recurrent Glioma-From Bench to Bedside

Glioma is the most aggressive malignant tumor of the central nervous system, and most patients suffer from a recurrence. Unfortunately, recurrent glioma often becomes resistant to established chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. Immunotherapy, a rapidly developing anti-tumor therapy, has shown a potential value in treating recurrent glioma. Multiple immune strategies have been explored. The most-used ones are immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) antibodies, which are barely effective in monotherapy. However, when combined with other immunotherapy, especially with anti-angiogenesis antibodies, ICB has shown encouraging efficacy and enhanced anti-tumor immune response. Oncolytic viruses and CAR-T therapies have shown promising results in recurrent glioma through multiple mechanisms. Vaccination strategies and immune-cell-based immunotherapies are promising in some subgroups of patients, and multiple new tumor antigenic targets have been discovered. In this review, we discuss current applicable immunotherapies and related mechanisms for recurrent glioma, focusing on multiple preclinical models and clinical trials in the last 5 years. Through reviewing the current combination of immune strategies, we would like to provide substantive thoughts for further novel therapeutic regimes treating recurrent glioma.

Significant heterogeneity in structural asymmetry of the habenula in the human brain: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Understanding the evolutionarily conserved feature of functional laterality in the habenula has been attracting attention due to its potential role in human cognition and neuropsychiatric disorders. Deciphering the structure of the human habenula remains to be challenging, which resulted in inconsistent findings for brain disorders. Here, we present a large-scale meta-analysis of the left-right differences in the habenular volume in the human brain to provide a clearer picture of the habenular asymmetry. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for articles that reported volume data of the bilateral habenula in the human brain, and assessed the left-right differences. We also assessed the potential effects of several moderating variables including the mean age of the participants, magnetic field strengths of the scanners and different disorders by using meta-regression and subgroup analysis. In total 52 datasets (N = 1427) were identified and showed significant heterogeneity in the left-right differences and the unilateral volume per se. Moderator analyses suggested that such heterogeneity was mainly due to different MRI scanners and segmentation approaches used. While inversed asymmetry patterns were suggested in patients with depression (leftward) and schizophrenia (rightward), no significant disorder-related differences relative to healthy controls were found in either the left-right asymmetry or the unilateral volume. This study provides useful data for future studies of brain imaging and methodological developments related to precision habenula measurements, and also helps to further understand potential roles of the habenula in various disorders.

Heat Shock Proteins in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer-Functional Mechanism

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 80-85% of all lung cancers, which has the highest cancer-related mortality worldwide. Regardless of the therapeutic effects of chemotherapy or targeted therapy, drug resistance will occur after 1 year. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a class of molecular chaperones participated in protein stability and multiple intracellular signaling pathways. It has been widely reported that HSPs family is over expressed in non-small cell lung cancer, and these molecules are also associated with protein stability and multiple intracellular signaling pathways. The effect of chemotherapy drugs or targeted drugs on cancer cells is usually to induce apoptosis. It is necessary to explore the interaction between heat shock protein family and apoptosis pathway in NSCLC. Here we provide a brief review of how HSPs affect the apoptotic pathway in NSCLC.

Entanglement of Trapped-Ion Qubits Separated by 230 Meters

We report on an elementary quantum network of two atomic ions separated by 230 m. The ions are trapped in different buildings and connected with 520(2) m of optical fiber. At each network node, the electronic state of an ion is entangled with the polarization state of a single cavity photon; subsequent to interference of the photons at a beam splitter, photon detection heralds entanglement between the two ions. Fidelities of up to (88.0+2.2-4.7)% are achieved with respect to a maximally entangled Bell state, with a success probability of 4×10^{-5}. We analyze the routes to improve these metrics, paving the way for long-distance networks of entangled quantum processors.

Spatial patterns of the cap-binding complex eIF4F in human melanoma cells

As a central node of protein synthesis, the cap-binding complex, eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4 F (eIF4F), is involved in cell homeostasis, development and tumorigenesis. A large body of literature exists on the regulation and function of eIF4F in cancer cells, however the intracellular localization patterns of this complex are largely unknown. Since different subsets of mRNAs are translated in distinct subcellular compartments, understanding the distribution of translation initiation factors in the cell is of major interest. Here, we developed an in situ detection method for eIF4F at the single cell level. By using an image-based spot feature analysis pipeline as well as supervised machine learning, we identify five distinct spatial patterns of the eIF4F translation initiation complex in human melanoma cells. The quantity of eIF4F complex per cell correlated with the global mRNA translation activity, and its variation is dynamically regulated by cell state or extracellular stimuli. In contrast, the spatial patterns of eIF4F complexes at the single cell level could distinguish melanoma cells harboring different oncogenic driver mutations. This suggests that different tumorigenic contexts differentially regulate the subcellular localization of mRNA translation, with specific localization of eIF4F potentially associated with melanoma cell chemoresistance.

Association between CYP2E1 C-1054T and 96-bp I/D genetic variations and the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome in Chinese women

PURPOSE

To investigate the association of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) C-1054T (rs2031920) and 96-bp I/D genetic variations with the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and to estimate the effects of genotypes on the clinical, metabolic, hormonal, and oxidative stress indicators.

METHODS

This case-control study included 762 control women and 1034 patients with PCOS. Genotypes were determined using polymerase chain reaction and/or restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Clinical and biochemical parameters were also analyzed.

RESULTS

Frequencies of the TT + CT genotype (35.4 vs. 28.9%) and T allele (19.6 vs. 16.0%) of the CYP2E1 C-1054T polymorphism were significantly higher in the PCOS group than in the control group (OR = 1.350, 95% CI 1.103-1.652, P = 0.004 for the dominant model). Genotype TT + CT remained a significant predictor of PCOS in a logistic regression model including age, body mass index (BMI), and recruitment year of participants (OR = 1.345, 95% CI 1.071-1.688, P = 0.011). No statistical differences were found in the genotype and allele frequencies of CYP2E1 96-bp I/D polymorphism. However, the combined genotype DD/TT + CT was related to an increased risk of PCOS when the DD/CC wild-type combined genotype was used as a reference. Patients with the I allele of 96-bp I/D polymorphism had a lower BMI but higher plasma apolipoprotein B and oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels than those with the DD genotype.

CONCLUSION

CYP2E1 C-1054T, but not 96-bp I/D, genetic polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of PCOS in Chinese women.

Oxygen vacancies engineering in electrocatalysts nitrogen reduction reaction

Ammonia is important, both as a fertilizer and as a carrier of clean energy, mainly produced by the Haber-Bosch process, which consumes hydrogen and emits large amounts of carbon dioxide. The ENRR (Electronchemical Nitrogen Reduction Reaction) is considered a promising method for nitrogen fixation owing to their low energy consumption, green and mild. However, the ammonia yield and Faraday efficiency of the ENRR catalysts are low due to the competitive reaction between HER and NRR, the weak adsorption of N2 andthe strong N≡N triple bond. Oxygen vacancy engineering is the most important method to improve NRR performance, not only for fast electron transport but also for effective breaking of the N≡N bond by capturing metastable electrons in the antibonding orbitals of nitrogen molecules. In this review, the recent progress of OVs (oxygen vacancies) in ENRR has been summarized. First, the mechanism of NRR is briefly introduced, and then the generation methods of OVs and their applicationin NRR are discussed, including vacuum annealing, hydrothermal method, hydrogen reduction, wet chemical reduction, plasma treatment and heterogeneous ion doping. Finally, the development and challenges of OVs in the field of electrochemical nitrogen fixation are presented. This review shows the important areas of development of catalysts to achieve industrially viable NRR.

Event boundaries shape temporal organization of memory by resetting temporal context

In memory, our continuous experiences are broken up into discrete events. Boundaries between events are known to influence the temporal organization of memory. However, how and through which mechanism event boundaries shape temporal order memory (TOM) remains unknown. Across four experiments, we show that event boundaries exert a dual role: improving TOM for items within an event and impairing TOM for items across events. Decreasing event length in a list enhances TOM, but only for items at earlier local event positions, an effect we term the local primacy effect. A computational model, in which items are associated to a temporal context signal that drifts over time but resets at boundaries captures all behavioural results. Our findings provide a unified algorithmic mechanism for understanding how and why event boundaries affect TOM, reconciling a long-standing paradox of why both contextual similarity and dissimilarity promote TOM.

Our memory is temporally organized, but our internal clock can be distorted. The authors demonstrate how environmental changes (termed event boundaries) affect memory for event order, and provide a computational model to explain these effects.

Multi-Component Nanofiber Composite Membrane Enabled High PM0.3 Removal Efficiency and Oil/Water Separation Performance in Complex Environment

Currently, industrial waste gas and oily wastewater are usually at high temperature and contain corrosive components (e.g., acid, alkali, oxidant, or high salt, etc.), presenting great challenges on filtration/separation materials. Here, a multi-purpose Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide)/polyacrylonitrile/silica (PMIA/PAN/SiO₂) nanofiber composite membrane with a high yield was prepared simply via electrospinning to satisfy the demands of air filtration and oil/water separation in complex environments. Under the synergy of PMIA, PAN and SiO₂, the composite membrane possesses high PM_0.3 removal capacity of 99.69%, robust purification ability against real smoke PM_2.5, effective oil/water separation performance of > 99.6%, superior high temperature stability (about 250 °C) and excellent chemical resistance, showing the potential application in filtration/separation process under complex conditions. Moreover, the influence mechanism of SiO₂ NPs on mechanical properties and filtration performance was systematically investigated through experiments and simulations, paving the way for future intensive research. This study provides an option for the facile and effective preparation of high-performance filtration/separation membranes applied in the field of dust filtration and oily wastewater separation, even in harsh environments.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 1201 Inhibits Intestinal Infection of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Typhimurium Strain ATCC 13311 in Mice with High-Fat Diet

Salmonella Typhimurium is widely distributed in food. It can colonise the gastrointestinal tract after ingestion, causing lamina propria edema, inflammatory cell infiltration, and mucosal epithelial decomposition. A high-fat diet (HFD) can induce an inflammatory response, but whether HFD can increase the infection level of S. Typhimurium is unknown. We established a model of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium strain ATCC 13311 ATCC 13311 infection in healthy adult mice with a maintenance diet (MD) or HFD to explore the effect of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 1201 intervention on S. Typhimurium ATCC 13311 colonization and its protective effects on mice. HFD exacerbated the infection of S. Typhimurium ATCC 13311, while the intervention of L. plantarum 1201 effectively mitigated this process. L. plantarum 1201 can reduce the colonies of S. ATCC 13311 in the intestines and tissues; and reduce intestinal inflammation by down-regulating the level of TLR4/NF-κB pathway related proteins in serum and the expression of related inflammatory factors in the colon and jejunum. Since L. plantarum 1201 can inhibit the colonization of S. Typhimurium ATCC 13311 and relieve inflammation in HFD, current research may support the use of L. plantarum 1201 to prevent S. Typhimurium infection.

Research on the Emotions Based on Brain-Computer Technology: A Bibliometric Analysis and Research Agenda

This study conducts a scientific analysis of 249 literature on the application of brain-computer technology in emotion research. We find that existing researches mainly focus on engineering, computer science, neurosciences neurology and psychology. PR China, United States, and Germany have the largest number of publications. Authors can be divided into four groups: real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rtfMRI) research group, brain-computer interface (BCI) impact factors analysis group, brain-computer music interfacing (BCMI) group, and user status research group. Clustering results can be divided into five categories, including external stimulus and event-related potential (ERP), electroencephalography (EEG), and information collection, support vector machine (SVM) and information processing, deep learning and emotion recognition, neurofeedback, and self-regulation. Based on prior researches, this study points out that individual differences, privacy risk, the extended study of BCI application scenarios and others deserve further research.

Primary Mediastinal Nonseminomas: A Population-Based Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Analysis

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to determine the disease characteristics and prognosis of patients with primary mediastinal nonseminomas (PMNS) in a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Demographic, treatment, and survival outcome data of cases with PMNS from 1975 to 2016 were retrieved. Cases with unknown variables mentioned in the analysis were excluded. Relative statistical methods were applied to analyze clinical characteristics and prognosis.

RESULTS

A total of 587 PMNS patients met the selection criteria, 526 of whom were men. The mean age of patients was 28 (1-85) y. A total of 511 PMNS patients had validated subtypes, including 172 mixed germ cell tumors, 117 yolk sac tumors, 111 malignant teratomas, 70 choriocarcinomas, and 41 embryonal carcinomas. Patients with yolk sac tumors had the highest 3-y cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate (66.9%), while those with choriocarcinoma and embryonal carcinoma showed the worst prognosis. Surgery + chemotherapy (46.2%) was the most common and effective treatment for each subtype of PMNS. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis identified embryonal carcinoma, malignant teratoma, choriocarcinoma, tumor size >15 cm, nodal metastasis, and distant stage as risk factors. In contrast, surgery-based care and younger age were protective factors. Propensity score matching analysis revealed significant improvement in the 5-y CSS rate from 35.8% to 60.3% with surgery (P < 0.001). However, radiotherapy (P = 0.436) and chemotherapy (P = 0.978) showed no survival benefits.

CONCLUSIONS

10 percent of the PMNS patients were female. Choriocarcinomas and embryonal carcinomas had the worst prognosis. Surgery was demonstrated to be the only way to prolong survival time. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy had minimal effects on prognosis.

[Three cases of mushroom poisoning caused by lethal Amanita species]

Mushroom poisoning with amatoxins can cause liver dysfunction in patients, and death in severe cases. The amatoxins detection by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) can help early clinical diagnosis. Three patients were identified as α-amatoxin containing mushroom poisoning by ELISA. The first symptoms of patients was gastrointestinal symptoms, and liver function damage occured later. One patient gave up treatment and died. After received supportive treatments such as adsorption of toxins, catharsis, fluid supplementation to promote toxin metabolism and liver protection, 2 patients were recovered and discharged.

Electrochemically synthesized SnO2 with tunable oxygen vacancies for efficient electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) driven by a renewable energy source offers a sustainable and environmentally benign route to produce ammonia (NH₃), but it is highly dependent on efficient and specific catalysts to reduce the high reaction barrier and improve the selectivity. Defect engineering is extensively used to regulate the surface properties of materials to improve their catalytic performance. Herein we synthesized SnO₂ with different oxygen vacancy concentrations by a controllable electrochemical method for electrocatalytic nitrogen (N₂) fixation. The prepared SnO₂ was used as an electrocatalyst and exhibited excellent NRR performance with an optimal NH₃ yield rate of 25.27 μg h^-1 mg_cat.^-1 and faradaic efficiency of 11.48% at -0.6 V (vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode) in 0.1 M Na₂SO₄. Oxygen vacancies provide more active sites and greater electron transfer ability on the catalyst surface to facilitate N₂ adsorption and activation. The electrocatalytic NRR performance of SnO₂ was enhanced with the increase in oxygen vacancy concentration. The density functional theory calculations indicate that the oxygen vacancies in SnO₂ promote the electrocatalytic NRR performance by increasing the number of valence electrons of Sn and decreasing the energy barrier of the potential-determining step, thus promoting the activation of the N-N bond to further achieve efficient N₂ fixation.

New Technologies' Commercialization: The Roles of the Leader's Emotion and Incubation Support

New technologies, such as brain-computer interfaces technology, advanced artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and virtual reality technology, have a strong influence on our daily activities. The application and commercialization of these technologies are prevailing globally, such as distance education, health monitoring, smart home devices, and robots. However, we still know little about the roles of individual emotion and the external environment on the commercialization of these new technologies. Therefore, we focus on the emotional factor of the leader, which is their passion for work, and discuss its effect on technology commercialization. We also analyzed the moderating role of incubation support in the relationship between the leader's emotion and technology commercialization. The results contribute to the application of emotion in improving the commercialization of new technologies.

Literature Review on the Applications of Machine Learning and Blockchain Technology in Smart Healthcare Industry: A Bibliometric Analysis

The emergence of machine learning (ML) and blockchain (BC) technology has greatly enriched the functions and services of healthcare, giving birth to the new field of "smart healthcare." This study aims to review the application of ML and BC technology in the smart medical industry by Web of Science (WOS) using bibliometric visualization. Through our research, we identify the countries with the greatest output, the major research subjects, funding funds, and the research hotspots in this field. We also find out the key themes and future research areas in application of ML and BC technology in healthcare area. We reveal the different aspects of research under the two technologies and how they relate to each other around five themes.

Development and application of a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for residual iodixanol quantification in AAV-based gene therapy product development

Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are non-enveloped viruses which have become popular gene transfer vectors to deliver DNA to target cells in clinical gene therapy. Iodixanol-based density gradient is one of the widely used purification methods for serotype-independent AAV. However, residual iodixanol in AAV could be a safety concern, and further purification to remove this process-related impurity is typically needed. An analytical assay with high sensitivity is essential for the detection of residual iodixanol to ensure the safety of AAV products. We developed a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method with the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 μg/mL for residual iodixanol measurement in AAV. The method also demonstrated linearity over four orders of magnitude which allows quantifying a high iodixanol concentration in in-process samples with excellent recovery and accuracy. In addition, we further explored a highly efficient purification method for removal of the residual iodixanol, to minimize the safety concern from iodixanol as a process impurity.

circ_0030018 promotes glioma proliferation and metastasis

Background

Circular RNA (circRNA) plays an essential role in tumor progression, including glioma. circ_0030018 is a newly discovered circRNA that is highly expressed in glioma. However, its role and mechanism in glioma need to be further elucidated.

Methods

The expression of circ_0030018, microRNA (miR)-194-5p, and tripartite motif containing 44 (TRIM44) was examined using quantitative real-time PCR. Cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis were determined using MTT assay, colony formation assay, transwell assay, and flow cytometry. Moreover, dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA pull-down assay were used to verify the interactions among circ_0030018, miR-194-5p, and TRIM44. The protein expression of TRIM44 was assessed by western blot analysis. Animal experiments were conducted to explore the role of circ_0030018 in glioma tumor growth in vivo.

Results

circ_0030018 was overexpressed in glioma tissues and cells, and its silencing could inhibit glioma cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and accelerate apoptosis. miR-194-5p could be sponged by circ_0030018, and its overexpression could hinder the progression of glioma cells. Further experiments revealed that miR-194-5p inhibitor reversed the negative regulation of circ_0030018 knockdown on glioma cell progression. In addition, TRIM44 was a target of miR-194-5p, and its downregulation could repress glioma cell progression. Overexpressed TRIM44 reversed the inhibition effect of miR-194-5p on glioma cell progression. Animal experiments suggested that circ_0030018 knockdown could reduce glioma tumor growth through regulating miR-194-5p and TRIM44.

Conclusion

Our 8data showed that circ_0030018 enhanced glioma progression by sponging miR-194-5p to regulate TRIM44, indicating that circ_0030018 might be a potential treatment target for glioma.

Transfacial lithotomy approach to intraparenchymal stones in the submandibular gland: our primary exploration

The article describes our exploration of a sialendoscopy-assisted transfacial sialolithotomy approach to intraparenchymal stones in the submandibular gland with gland preservation. Five patients with large intraparenchymal stones in the submandibular gland were included. Ultrasonography and computed tomograms (CT) were performed to locate the stones. As the large stones failed to be retrieved during endoscopy, patients were treated by a transfacial lithotomy approach with sialendoscopy. The glands were preserved in all cases. This approach can be considered an optional technique for the treatment of large intraparenchymal stones in the submandibular gland that fail to be removed during a transoral procedure.

Immunogenicity and safety of the inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine made from Sabin strains in a phase IV clinical trial for the vaccination of a large population

As a recently launched novel vaccine used as one of the vaccines for the final eradication of polios worldwide, complete data on the consistency and immunogenicity characteristics of the inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine made from the Sabin strain (sIPV) and its safety in large-scale populations are required to support the future use of this vaccine worldwide. A phase IV clinical trial was conducted to perform an immunogenicity evaluation of lot-to-lot consistency of three commercial batches of sIPV in 1200 infants and to investigate the vaccine's safety on a large-scale in 20,019 infants for active monitoring and 29,683 infants for passive monitoring through the Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) reporting system in China. In the immunogenicity evaluation, the average seroconversion rates for type I, type II and type III of the three groups were 99.83%, 98.93% and 99.44%, respectively. No differences in the seroconversion rate and the GMT ratios were noted in the pair-to-pair comparisons. In the large-scale safety evaluation, most adverse reactions occurred 0-30 days after the first doses, and the common local and systemic reactions were similar to those in the phase III clinical trial, with low incidence in both activated and passive monitoring. In conclusion, sIPV exhibits good lot-to-lot consistency and safety in large-scale populations; thus, it is qualified to serve as one of the vaccines for use in eradicating all wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses worldwide in the near future. Thymic Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Population-Based Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result Analysis

Objectives

Thymic squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is a rare neoplasm that has been sparsely cited in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine disease characteristics and prognostic factors of patients in a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) analysis.

Methods

Cases from 1990-2016 were retrieved from the SEER database and demographics, treatments, and survival outcomes were analyzed.

Results

The TSCC accounted for 72.4% of the thymic carcinomas and 7.2% of thymic tumors. The 276 patients (165 men) selected for analysis had a median age of 65 (24-85) years, and 201 patients were diagnosed with Masaoka-Koga stage III/IV. The median survival of TSCC was 59 months with a 49.0% 5-year OS rate, a better prognosis than lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (32.1%) and undifferentiated carcinoma (33.3%). Multivariate analysis revealed the Masaoka-Koga stage (p = 0.003) and surgical types (complete resection, incomplete resection, and none; p < 0.001) were determinants of survival. Complete resection had the best prognosis with a 72.7% 5-year OS rate. Chemotherapy was an independent protective factor (HR = 0.555, 95% CI 0.347-0.886; p = 0.014) though poor survival was showed in univariate analysis. And the survival benefit of chemotherapy was validated in PSM analysis (3-year OS rate was 77.7% with chemotherapy vs. 52.8% without chemotherapy; p = 0.014).

Conclusions

TSCC was frequently diagnosed in older patients with advanced Masaoka-Koga stage and had more favorable survival than other subtypes of thymic carcinomas. Complete resection is the preferred treatment. Masaoka-Koga stage and chemotherapy had a strong association with prognosis.

Randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled phase II trial of an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in healthy adults

Background

We evaluated an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine for immunogenicity and safety in adults aged 18-59 years.

Methods

In this randomized, double-blinded and controlled trial, healthy adults received a medium (MD) or a high dose (HD) of the vaccine at an interval of either 14 days or 28 days. Neutralizing antibody (NAb) and anti-S and anti-N antibodies were detected at different times, and adverse reactions were monitored for 28 days after full immunization.

Results

A total of 742 adults were enrolled in the immunogenicity and safety analysis. Among subjects in the 0, 14 procedure, the seroconversion rates of NAb in MD and HD groups were 89% and 96% with GMTs of 23 and 30, respectively, at day 14 and 92% and 96% with GMTs of 19 and 21, respectively at day 28 after immunization. Anti-S antibodies had GMTs of 1883 and 2370 in MD and 2295 and 2432 in HD group. Anti-N antibodies had GMTs of 387 and 434 in MD group and 342 and 380 in HD group. Among subjects in the 0, 28 procedure, seroconversion rates for NAb at both doses were both 95% with GMTs of 19 at day 28 after immunization. Anti-S antibodies had GMTs of 937 and 929 for MD and HD group, and anti-N antibodies had GMTs of 570 and 494 for MD and HD group, respectively. No serious adverse events were observed during the study period.

Conclusion

Adults vaccinated with inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine had NAb as well as anti-S/N antibody, and had a low rate of adverse reactions.

Repair of severe traumatic nasal alar defects with combined pedicled flap and conchal cartilage composite grafts: a retrospective study

Background

Repair of traumatic alar defect is challenging because poor blood supply is caused by contracture scars, which sometimes extend beyond the alar groove. However, few studies have investigated the reconstruction results of severe traumatic cases. This study aimed to examine the clinical outcomes of severe traumatic alar defect reconstruction using either pedicled nasolabial or forehead flaps combined with conchal cartilage.

Methods

This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics and treatment effects of 17 patients with severe traumatic alar defects treated in a single plastic surgery center from March 1, 2015, to September 1, 2018. All cases were scored and graded with regard to the size and depth of the alar defect and the surrounding scar according to the Alar Defect Severity Score (ADSS). Surgical outcomes were evaluated on the basis of the severity of defect before repair, donor site distortion, and postoperative nasal symmetry, especially shape and color.

Results

The average ADSS of the cases was 8.1±0.8 (highest score, 9.0). No flap necrosis or any complications were observed postoperatively. The symmetry of the bilateral alae was satisfactory. No color distinction between grafts and surrounding tissues, retraction, or inferior displacement of the ala was observed at an average follow-up of 24.2±10.4 months (range, 8–42 months). The average postoperative surgeon-based evaluation score was 4.3±0.2 (highest score, 5.0). Esthetic and functional results were satisfactory in all cases.

Conclusions

A pedicled flap combined with conchal composite grafts should be considered for the treatment of severe traumatic alar defect. This is a reproducible technique that enables a predictably decent outcome for severe traumatic alar defect, especially in Asian patients.

Multifunctional composite membrane based on BaTiO3@PU/PSA nanofibers for high-efficiency PM2.5 removal

In this study, a new barium titanate@polyurethane/polysulfonamide (BaTiO₃@PU/PSA) composite nanofibrous membrane with comprehensive properties for high temperature filtration and robust PM2.5 removal was successfully fabricated through the blending spinning of PU and PSA and the introduction of BaTiO₃. As a consequence, the BaTiO₃@PU/PSA membrane achieved the high capture efficiency of 99.99 % for fine particulates, low pressure drop of 39.4 ± 0.2 Pa, good mechanical property (13.27 MPa), sufficient flexibility, high thermal stability (up to 300 °C), favorable flame-retardancy as well as superior chemical resistance against acid and alkali. Especially, to intuitively reveal the relationship between the fiber structure, high temperature environment, gas velocity and filtration performance of the composite membrane, the filtration processes were carefully investigated through the analog simulation. More importantly, the BaTiO₃@PU/PSA membrane exhibited high-efficiency PM2.5 purification capacity, and the removal efficiency kept stable after high temperature, acid or alkali treatment, ascribing to the advantageous structure of PSA, PU and BaTiO₃. Overall, the BaTiO₃@PU/PSA nanofiber membranes with versatility are a promising high-efficiency candidate for dust removal, particularly in harsh conditions.

Electrospun Polymer Composite Membrane with Superior Thermal Stability and Excellent Chemical Resistance for High-Efficiency PM2.5 Capture

To address the challenge of high-temperature air filtration, a novel electreted polysulfonamide/polyacrylonitrile-boehmite (PSA/PAN-B) composite nanofiber based filter was developed via electrospinning for effective high-temperature dust removal. In this study, the spinnability of PSA was greatly improved by adding a small amount of PAN as an auxiliary polymer, and the introduction of a boehmite electret further significantly reinforced the properties of PSA fibers. As a result, the PSA/PAN-B membrane exhibited a high filtration efficiency (up to 99.52 ± 0.32%), low pressure drop (45.16 ± 1.39 Pa), excellent flexibility, good mechanical properties, high thermal stability (up to approximately 300 °C), and superior chemical resistance. Through data analysis and 3D simulation, the important benefits of the boehmite electret in the optimization of the PSA fibrous membrane performance were determined: it increases the charge storage capacity, constructs a rough surface morphology, improves the specific surface area, and enhances the mechanical properties. More importantly, the PSA/PAN-B film possessed a robust PM2.5 purification capacity, and the particulate matter removal efficiency was kept unchanged after high-temperature, acid, or alkali treatment-a performance derived from the intrinsic molecular structure of PSA. The PSA/PAN-B composite fibrous membrane, with excellent comprehensive properties, is a promising candidate for air filters, especially in harsh environments, further broadening the applications of PSA and providing new insight into the design of high-performance filters with high-temperature and corrosion resistance.
