Abstract
Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a global environmental pollutant. To reduce the risk caused by Cr(VI), a simple, accurate, reproducible, and inexpensive method for quantifying Cr(VI) in water and soil should be developed. In this study, three types of recombinant Escherichia coli biosensors (namely T7-lux-E. coli, T3-lux-E. coli, and SP6-lux-E. coli biosensor) containing promoters (T7, T3, and SP6), chromate-sensing regulator chrB, and the reporter gene luxAB were constructed. This study investigated the effects of cryogenic freezing temperature and time on trace Cr(VI) measurement by using recombinant E. coli biosensors. The results indicated that the activity of thawed frozen SP6-lux-E. coli cells stored at -20 °C for 270 days did not differ from that of freshly prepared cells. Turbidity and conductivity in water samples and organic matter in soil interfered with Cr(VI) measurement using the biosensor. The SP6-lux-E. coli biosensor exhibited a wide measurement range and a low deviation of <5% for measuring Cr(VI) in various Cr(VI)-contaminated water and soil samples and required only a simple pretreatment or extraction process even after 270-day storage at -20 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the use of recombinant biosensors for accurately measuring Cr(VI) in both water and soil.

Abstract
Several studies have explored the biological activities of Citrus aurantium flowers, fruits, and seeds, but the bioactivity of C. aurantium leaves, which are treated as waste, remains unclear. Thus, this study developed a pilot-scale ultrasonic-assisted extraction process using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) for the optimized extraction of active compounds from C. aurantium leaves, and their antityrosinase, antioxidant, antiaging, and antimicrobial activities were evaluated. Under optimal conditions in a 150× scaleup configuration (a 30 L ultrasonic machine) of a pilot plant, the total phenolic content was 69.09 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight, which was slightly lower (3.17%) than the theoretical value. The half maximal inhibitory concentration of C. aurantium leaf extract (CALE) for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-scavenging, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-scavenging, antityrosinase, anticollagenase, antielastase and anti-matrix metalloprotein-1 activities were 123.5, 58.5, 181.3, 196.4, 216.3, and 326.4 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, the minimal inhibitory concentrations for bacteria and fungi were 150-350 and 500 mg/L, respectively. In total, 17 active compounds were detected in CALE-with linalool, linalyl acetate, limonene, and α-terpineol having the highest concentrations. Finally, the overall transdermal absorption and permeation efficiency of CALE was 95.9%. In conclusion, our CALE demonstrated potential whitening, antioxidant, antiaging, and antimicrobial activities; it was also nontoxic and easily absorbed into the skin as well as inexpensive to produce. Therefore, it has potential applications in various industries.

Abstract
In this study, we constructed a recombinant Escherichia coli strain with different promoters inserted between the chromate-sensing regulator chrB and the reporter gene luxAB to sense low hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) concentrations (<0.05 mg/L); subsequently, its biosensor characteristics (sensitivity, selectivity, and specificity) for measuring Cr(VI) in various water bodies were evaluated. The luminescence intensity of each biosensor depended on pH, temperature, detection time, coexisting carbon source, coexisting ion, Cr(VI) oxyanion form, Cr(VI) concentration, cell type, and type of medium. Recombinant lux-expressing E. coli with the T7 promoter (T7-lux-E. coli, limit of detection (LOD) = 0.0005 mg/L) had the highest luminescence intensity or was the most sensitive for Cr(VI) detection, followed by E. coli with the T3 promoter (T3-lux-E. coli, LOD = 0.001 mg/L) and that with the SP6 promoter (SP6-lux-E. coli, LOD = 0.005 mg/L). All biosensors could be used to determine whether the Cr(VI) standard was met in terms of water quality, even when using thawing frozen cells as biosensors after 90-day cryogenic storage. The SP6-lux-E. coli biosensor had the shortest detection time (0.5 h) and the highest adaptability to environmental interference. The T7-lux-E. coli biosensor—with the optimal LOD, a wide measurement range (0.0005–0.5 mg/L), and low deviation (−5.0–7.9%) in detecting Cr(VI) from industrial effluents, domestic effluents, and surface water—is an efficient Cr(VI) biosensor. This unprecedented study is to evaluate recombinant lux E. coli with dissimilar promoters for their possible practice in Cr(VI) measurement in water bodies, and the biosensor performance is clearly superior to that of past systems in terms of detection time, LOD, and detection deviation for real water samples.

Abstract
In this study, we constructed recombinant luminescent Escherichia coli with T7, T3, and SP6 promoters inserted between tol and lux genes as toluene biosensors and evaluated their sensitivity, selectivity, and specificity for measuring bioavailable toluene in groundwater and river water. The luminescence intensity of each biosensor depended on temperature, incubation time, ionic strength, and concentrations of toluene and coexisting organic compounds. Toluene induced the highest luminescence intensity in recombinant lux-expressing E. coli with the T7 promoter [T7-lux-E. coli, limit of detection (LOD) = 0.05 μM], followed by that in E. coli with the T3 promoter (T3-lux-E. coli, LOD = 0.2 μM) and SP6 promoter (SP6-lux-E. coli, LOD = 0.5 μM). Luminescence may have been synergistically or antagonistically affected by coexisting organic compounds other than toluene; nevertheless, low concentrations of benzoate and toluene analogs had no such effect. In reproducibility experiments, the biosensors had low relative standard deviation (4.3-5.8%). SP6-lux-E. coli demonstrated high adaptability to environmental interference. T7-lux-E. coli biosensor-with low LOD, wide measurement range (0.05-500 μM), and acceptable deviation (- 14.3 to 9.1%)-is an efficient toluene biosensor. This is the first study evaluating recombinant lux E. coli with different promoters for their potential application in toluene measurement in actual water bodies.

Abstract
Coliform bacteria are indicators of water quality; however, most detection methods for coliform bacteria are time-consuming and nonspecific. Here, we developed a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) approach to detect four types of coliform bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Citrobacter freundii, simultaneously in water samples using specific probes for 16S rRNA. This FISH method was applied to detect coliform bacteria in simulated water and domestic wastewater samples and compared with traditional detection methods (e.g., plate counting, multiple-tube fermentation (MTF) technique, and membrane filter (MF) technique). Optimal FISH conditions for detecting the four types of coliforms were found to be fixation in 3% paraformaldehyde at 4 °C for 2 h and hybridization at 50 °C for 1.5 h. By comparing FISH with plate counting, MTF, MF, and a commercial detection kit, we found that FISH had the shortest detection time and highest accuracy for the identification of coliform bacteria in simulated water and domestic wastewater samples. Moreover, the developed method could simultaneously detect individual species and concentrations of coliform bacteria. Overall, our findings indicated that FISH could be used as a rapid, accurate biosensor system for simultaneously detecting four types of coliform bacteria to ensure water safety.

Abstract
A novel combined dual microbial fuel cell (MFC) system was developed for the continuous removal of Victoria Blue R (VBR) and electricity generation. Anaerobic and aerobic VBR-degrading bacteria, Shewanella putrefaciens and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, respectively, were applied simultaneously. The effects of various factors on the performance of the novel system in the continuous mode were investigated, and optimal operating parameters for the system were determined. The optimal liquid retention time for continuous treatment was 36 h. The optimal external resistances of connected MFCs were 390 Ω and 1300 Ω. When artificial wastewater containing 1000 mg/l of VBR was fed continuously into the system, the VBR removal efficiency achieved was 98.7%. In addition, the acute toxicity of the effluent was decreased by a factor of 21.1-22.3, indicating that the system could detoxify VBR intermediates. VBR degradation involved a stepwise demethylation process, which occurred mainly in the first MFC, whereas aromatic ring opening, sequential deamination reaction, and carbon oxidation occurred mainly in the second MFC. When actual VBR-containing wastewater (75-262 mg/l) was introduced, the removal efficiencies of VBR, chemical oxygen demand, colority, NH3, and bioelectricity generation were >99.8%, >96.6%, >88.0%, 100%, and >194.8 mW/m2, respectively and the original inoculated strains remained dominant. Therefore, the combined dual MFC system could be applied to the treatment of actual VBR-containing wastewater.

Abstract
The magnetic glassy state is a fascinating phenomenon, which results from the kinetic arrest of the first order magnetic phase transition. Interesting properties, such as metastable magnetization and nonequilibrium magnetic phases, are naturally developed in the magnetic glassy state. Here, we report magnetic glass property in the low spin state of Co3+ in EuBaCo2O5+δ (δ = 0.47) cobaltite at low temperature (T < 60 K). The measurements of magnetization under the cooling and heating in unequal fields, magnetization relaxation and thermal cycling of magnetization show the kinetic arrest of low magnetization state below 60 K. The kinetically arrested low temperature magnetic phase is further supported through the study of isothermal magnetic entropy, which shows the significant entropy change. The present results will open a new window to search the microscopic relation between the spin state transitions and the kinetic arrest induced magnetic glassy phenomena in complex materials.

Abstract
Toluene is highly toxic and mutagenic, and it is generally used as an industrial solvent. Thus, toluene removal from air is necessary. To solve the problem of reducing high toluene concentrations with a short gas retention time (GRT), a quorum-sensing molecule [N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone] (OHL) was added to a biotrickling filter (BTF). In this study, a BTF was used to treat synthetic and natural waste gases containing toluene. An extensive analysis was performed to understand the removal efficiency, removal characteristics, and bacterial community of the BTF. The addition of 20 μM OHL to the BTF significantly improved toluene removal, and more than 99.2% toluene removal was achieved at a GRT of 0.5 min when natural waste gas containing toluene (590-1020 ppm or 2.21-3.83 g m-3) was introduced. The maximum inlet load for toluene was 337.9 g m-3 h-1. Moreover, the BTF exhibited satisfactory adaptability to shock loading and shutdown operations. Pseudomonadaceae (33.0%) and Comamonadaceae (26.3%) were predominant bacteria in the system after a 98-day operation. These bacteria were responsible for toluene degradation. The optimal moisture content and low pressure drop for system operations demonstrated that the BTF was energy and cost efficient. Therefore, processing through a BTF with OHL is a favorable technique for toluene treatment.

Abstract
Asparagus cochinchinensis root (ACR) is used in traditional Chinese medicine. In this study, ACR was first extracted with 25% ethyl acetate (EA) and then fermented by Aspergillus oryzae to enhance its antioxidant activity and evaluate its potential antityrosinase activity. The physiological activity and cytotoxicity of A. oryzae-fermented ACR extract, along with its antityrosinase activity and effects on melanogenic factor levels in human epidermal melanocytes (HEMs), were analyzed and compared with those of the unfermented extract. The results showed that the physiological activity of the fermented extract in vitro or in cells was significantly higher than that of the unfermented extract. The IC50 values for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazine radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and antityrosinase activity in vitro for the fermented extract were 250.6 ± 32.5, 25.7 ± 3.5, and 50.6 ± 3.1 mg/L, respectively. The fermented extract favored cellular antityrosinase activity with low melanin production in human melanoma cells compared with the unfermented extract. The inhibitory mechanism of melanin synthesis by unfermented extract was independent of the tested melanogenesis-related proteins. However, the inhibitory mechanism of the fermented extract was possibly caused by synergistic inhibition of these proteins. Thus, A. oryzae-fermented ACR extract may be used for developing new health food or cosmetic ingredients.

Abstract
The effectiveness of an airlift reactor system in simultaneously removing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) from synthetic and actual waste gases was investigated. The effects of various parameters, including the ratio of inoculum dilution, the gas concentration, the gas retention time, catalyst addition, the bubble size, and light intensity, on H2S and NH3 removal were investigated. The results revealed that optimal gas removal could be achieved by employing an activated inoculum, using a small bubble stone, applying reinforced fluorescent light, adding Fe2O3 catalysts, and applying a gas retention time of 20 s. The shock loading did not substantially affect the removal efficiency of the airlift bioreactor. Moreover, more than 98.5% of H2S and 99.6% of NH3 were removed in treating actual waste gases. Fifteen bands or species were observed in a profile from denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis during waste gas treatment. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the phylum Proteobacteria to be predominant. Six bacterial strains were consistently present during the entire operating period; however, only Rhodobacter capsulatus, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, and Arthrobacter oxydans were relatively abundant in the system. The photosynthetic bacteria R. capsulatus and R. palustris were responsible for H2S oxidation, especially when the reinforced fluorescent light was used. The heterotrophic nitrifier A. oxydans was responsible for NH3 oxidation. To our knowledge, this is the first report on simultaneous H2S and NH3 removal using an airlift bioreactor system. It clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the system in treating actual waste gases containing H2S and NH3.

Abstract
This study was conducted to select electrogenic bacteria from wastewater sludge. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in the microbial fuel cell (MFC) during the decomposition process of organic pollutants. Five culturable bacteria strains - namely, Bacillus subtilis, Flavobacterium sp., Aeromonas hydrophila, Citrobacter freundii, and Stenotrophomonas sp. - have a double potential in dye removal and electricity generation. We inoculated the mixed electrogenic bacteria at a specific ratio and treated them with a triphenylmethane dye, Victoria blue R (VBR), to evaluate their electricity generation ability for the artificial and real wastewater. The results of the VBR shock-loading experiment indicated that the inoculated MFC could adapt to shock loading in 1-2 days and exhibited high removal efficiency (95-100%) for 100-800 mg L-1 VBR with a power density of 8.62 ± 0.10 to 34.81 ± 0.25 mW m-2. The selected electrogenic bacteria in the MFC could use VBR as only electron donor for power generation. The matrix effects of the real wastewater on VBR removal and electricity generation of MFC were insignificant. VBR degradation by the electrogenic bacteria involves a stepwise demethylation process to yield partially dealkylated VBR species. In addition, these results demonstrate the feasibility of inoculating culturable bacteria strains to develop an efficient MFC for purifying wastewater.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether the rate of clozapine use, an indicator of refractoriness in schizophrenia, is associated with the season of birth and age at onset in patients with schizophrenia based on nationwide data. METHODS Patients with schizophrenia (n = 114 749) who received prescriptions for antipsychotic medication between 2008 and 2014 were retrospectively identified from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The study population was divided into three groups based on their age at the onset of schizophrenia (early, middle, and late onset). We assessed differences in the month of birth between patients and the general population. In addition, the cumulative clozapine use was calculated. RESULTS Compared to the late-onset schizophrenia group, the early- and middle-onset groups showed a higher probability of birth during the winter season. In addition, the early-onset group showed the highest cumulative clozapine use rate. In the middle-onset group, the initiation of clozapine use was significantly earlier for patients born in winter compared to those born in summer. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that the age at onset is an important factor in predicting the prognosis of schizophrenia patients. The season of birth also affects the prognosis, but with less robustness. Specifically, it appears that early disease onset and winter birth might be associated with poor outcomes in Korean patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
A novel two-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) operation with a continuous anaerobic-aerobic decolorization system was developed to improve the degradation of the triphenylmethane dye, Victoria blue R (VBR). In addition, bioelectricity was generated during the VBR degradation process, and the operation parameters were optimized. The results indicated that the VBR removal efficiency and electricity generation were affected by the VBR concentration, liquid retention time (LRT), external resistance, gas retention time (GRT), and shock loading. The optimal operation parameters were as follows: VBR concentration, 600 mg L-1; LRT, 24 h; external resistance, 3300 Ω; and GRT, 60 s. Under these operating conditions, the VBR removal efficiency, COD removal efficiency, and power density were 98.2% ± 0.3%, 97.6% ± 0.5%, and 30.6 ± 0.4 mW m-2, respectively. According to our review of the relevant literature, this is the first paper to analyze the electrical characteristics of a continuous two-chamber MFC operation and demonstrate the feasibility of the simultaneous electricity generation and decolorization of VBR.

Abstract
Angelica dahurica root (ADR), which shows strong antioxidant activity, is used in Chinese medicine. This study evaluated the tyrosinase inhibitory and antioxidant activities of ADR extracts fermented by four different probiotic bacteria: Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus brevis. The ADR was first extracted using distilled water, 70% ethanol, and ethyl acetate, and then fermented by probiotic bacteria. The physiological characteristics of these fermented extracts, namely the antityrosinase activity, antioxidant activity, phenolic composition, and phenolic content, were evaluated and compared with those of unfermented extracts. Results showed that the water extracts after fermentation by probiotic bacteria exhibited the most favorable physiological characteristics. Among the extracts fermented by these probiotic bacteria, L. acidophilus-fermented ADR extract showed the most favorable physiological characteristics. The optimal IC50 values for antityrosinase activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and reducing power for L. acidophilus-fermented ADR extract were 0.07 ± 0.03, 0.12 ± 0.01, and 0.68 ± 0.06 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, the physiological activities of fermented extracts were considerably higher than those of unfermented extracts. The tyrosinase inhibition and melanin content of B16F10 melanoma cells, and cytotoxicity effects of the fermented ADR extracts on B16F10 cells were also evaluated. We found that the L. acidophilus-fermented ADR extract at 1.5 mg/mL showed significant cellular antityrosinase activity with low melanin production in B16F10 cells and was noncytotoxic to B16F10 cells. Among all probiotic bacteria, water-extracted ADR fermented by L. acidophilus for 48 h was found to be the best skincare agent or antioxidant agent.

Abstract
We demonstrate the transmission of 51.56-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) signals generated by using a 1.55-μm directly modulated laser (DML) over 15-km long standard single-mode fiber. In this experiment, a duobinary electrical equalizer based on a finite-impulse-response filter is used at the receiver to increase the dispersion-limited transmission distance. We evaluate the performances of the 51.56-Gb/s OOK signals with respect to the transmission distance by using the frequency response analysis of the proposed system. This result is used to explain why it is effective to utilize the duobinary equalization (instead of binary equalization) for increasing the transmission distance.

Abstract
Bioremediation is an environmentally friendly method of reducing heavy metal concentration and toxicity. A chromium-reducing bacterial strain, isolated from the vicinity of an electroplate factory, was identified as Ochrobactrum sp. YC211. The efficiency and capacity per time of Ochrobactrum sp. YC211 for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal under anaerobic conditions were superior to those under aerobic conditions. An acceptable removal efficiency (96.5 ± 0.6%) corresponding to 30.2 ± 0.8 mg-Cr (g-dry cell weight-h)(-1) was achieved by Ochrobactrum sp. YC211 at 300 mg L(-1) Cr(VI). A temperature of 30°C and pH 7 were the optimal parameters for Cr(VI) removal. By examining reactivated cells, permeabilized cells, and cell-free extract, we determined that Cr(VI) removal by Ochrobactrum sp. YC211 under anaerobic conditions mainly occurred in the soluble fraction of the cell and can be regarded as an enzymatic reaction. The results also indicated that an Ochrobactrum sp. YC211 microbial fuel cell (MFC) with an anaerobic anode was considerably superior to that with an aerobic anode in bioelectricity generation and Cr(VI) removal. The maximum power density and Cr(VI) removal efficiency of the MFC were 445 ± 3.2 mW m(-2) and 97.2 ± 0.3%, respectively. Additionally, the effects of coexisting ions (Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Ni(2+), SO4(2-), and Cl(-)) in the anolyte on the MFC performance and Cr(VI) removal were nonsignificant (P > 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first report to compare Cr(VI) removal by different cells and MFC types under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

Abstract
The characteristics of a packed-bed bioreactor (PBB) for continuously removing Victoria Blue R (VBR) from an aqueous solution were determined. The effects of various factors including liquid retention time (RT), VBR concentration, shock loading, and coexisting compounds on the VBR removal and bacterial community in a continuous system were investigated. The intermediates of degraded VBR and the acute toxicity of the effluent from PBB were analyzed. When the VBR concentration was lower than 400 mg/l for a two-day retention time (RT), 100% removal was achieved. During continuous operation, the efficiency initially varied with the VBR concentration and RT, but gradually increased in one to two days. Furthermore, the acute toxicity of the effluent reduced by a factor of 21.25-49.61, indicating that the PBB can be successfully operated under turbulent environmental conditions. VBR degradation involved stepwise demethylation and yielded partially dealkylated VBR species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the dominant phylum in the PBB was Proteobacteria and that Aeromonas hydrophila dominated during the entire operating period. The characteristics of the identified species showed that the PBB is suitable for processes such as demethylation, aromatic ring opening, carbon oxidation, nitrification, and denitrification.

Abstract
The conventional Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) method takes five days to analyze samples. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) may be an alternate tool for rapid BOD determination in water. However, a MFC biosensor for continuous BOD measurements of water samples is still unavailable. In this study, a MFC biosensor inoculated with known mixed cultures was used to determine the BOD concentration. Effects of important parameters on establishing a calibration curve between the BOD concentration and output signal from the MFC were evaluated. The results indicate monosaccharides were good fuel, and methionine, phenylalanine, and ethanol were poor fuels for electricity generation by the MFC. Ions in the influent did not significantly affect the MFC performance. CN− in the influent could alleviate the effect of antagonistic electron acceptors on the MFC performance. The regression equation for BOD concentration and current density of the biosensor was y = 0.0145x + 0.3317. It was adopted to measure accurately and continuously the BOD concentration in actual water samples at an acceptable error margin. These results clearly show the developed MFC biosensor has great potential as an alternative BOD sensing device for online measurements of wastewater BOD.

Abstract
Chitosan is a potential substitute for traditional aluminium salts in water treatment systems. This study compared the characteristics of humic acid (HA) removal by using acid-soluble chitosan, water-soluble chitosan, and coagulant mixtures of chitosan with aluminium sulphate (alum) or polyaluminium chloride (PACl). In addition, we evaluated their respective coagulation efficiencies at various coagulant concentrations, pH values, turbidities, and hardness levels. Furthermore, we determined the size and settling velocity of flocs formed by these coagulants to identify the major factors affecting HA coagulation. The coagulation efficiency of acid- and water-soluble chitosan for 15 mg/l of HA was 74.4% and 87.5%, respectively. The optimal coagulation range of water-soluble chitosan (9-20 mg/l) was broader than that of acid-soluble chitosan (4-8 mg/l). Notably, acid-soluble chitosan/PACl and water-soluble chitosan/alum coagulant mixtures exhibited a higher coagulation efficiency for HA than for PACl or alum alone. Furthermore, these coagulant mixtures yielded an acceptable floc settling velocity and savings in both installation and operational expenses. Based on these results, we confidently assert that coagulant mixtures with a 1:1 mass ratio of acid-soluble chitosan/PACl and water-soluble chitosan/alum provide a substantially more cost-effective alternative to using chitosan alone for removing HA from water.

Abstract
We analyze the inter-core crosstalk in homogeneous multi-core two-mode fibers (MC-TMFs) under bent condition by using the coupled-mode equations. In particular, we investigate the effects of the intra-core mode coupling on the inter-core crosstalk for two different types of MC-TMFs at various bending radii. The results show that the inter-core homo-mode crosstalk of LP(11) mode is dominant under the gentle fiber bending condition due to its large effective area. However, as the fiber bending becomes tight, the intra-core mode coupling is significantly enhanced and consequently makes all the inter-core crosstalk levels comparable to each other regardless of the mode. A similar tendency is observed at a reduced bending radius when the difference in the propagation constants between modes is large and core pitch is small.

Abstract
It has been recently reported that reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) can be used as phase modulators for the cost-effective implementation of the high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM PONs). For the detection of the phase-shift-keying (PSK) signal generated by using an RSOA, we should be able to estimate its carrier phase accurately at the digital coherent receiver. However, when the baud rate of this PSK signal is set to be much higher than the RSOA's modulation bandwidth, the conventional M-th power algorithm cannot estimate its carrier phase accurately. To solve this problem, we develop a simple carrier-phase estimation technique for the high-speed (>10 Gb/s) PSK signals generated by using bandwidth-limited RSOAs. This technique estimates the carrier phase of the PSK signal by measuring the angular direction of the opening occurred in the trajectory of the phasor diagram. By using the proposed technique, we demonstrate the upstream transmission of the 25.78-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal generated by using an RSOA (3-dB bandwidth: 3.2 GHz) in a 60-km reach coherent WDM PON.

Abstract
An efficient treatment system that combines a photoreactor and packed bed bioreactor (PBR) was developed and evaluated for treating ethyl violet (EV)-containing wastewater. Initial experiments demonstrated that the optimal operating parameters for the photoreactor in treating EV-containing wastewater were 2h reaction time, pH of 7, and 2 min liquid retention time. Under these conditions, the photocatalytic reaction achieved a 61% EV removal efficiency and resulted in a significant BOD/COD increase in the solution. The results displayed by the coupled photobiological system achieved a removal efficiency of 85% and EC50 of the solution increased by 19 times in a semi-continuous mode when the EV concentration was <150 mg +L(-)(1). The effect of shock loading on the EV removal was temporary but coexisting substrate (glucose and crystal violet) at specific levels would affect the EV removal efficiency of the PBR. Phylogenetic analysis in the PBR indicated that the major bacteria species were Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, Ralstonia pickettii, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Comamonas sp. Furthermore, the possible degrading mechanisms of this coupled system were demethylation, deethylation, aromatic ring opening, nitrification, and carbon oxidation. The intermediates were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. These results indicated that the coupled photobiological system provides an effective method of EV removal.

Abstract
We report a practical 12.5-Gb/s, 12.5-GHz-spaced ultra-dense wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (UD-WDM PON). For the cost-effectiveness, we implement the downstream links by using electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) in the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (4PAM) format and PIN receivers, and the upstream links by using reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) modulated in the quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) format and low-cost self-homodyne receivers. To further enhance its cost-effectiveness, we also utilize an optical frequency comb generator, instead of a large number of wavelength-selected lasers, to provide the seed light for these colorless RSOAs. We optimize the operating conditions of the EMLs and RSOAs to maximize the power margins in the presence of the crosstalk arising from closely spaced neighboring channels and the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by the narrow passband of the cascaded arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs) as well as the limited modulation bandwidths of RSOAs. The experimental results show that we can secure the power margins of >2.5 dB for both upstream and downstream links of the proposed UD-WDM PON.

Abstract
We propose and demonstrate a simple technique to monitor both the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and chromatic dispersion (CD) by using the software-based synchronous amplitude histogram (SAH) analysis. We exploit the software-based synchronization technique to construct SAHs from the asynchronously sampled intensities of the signal. The use of SAHs facilitates the accurate extraction of the monitoring parameters at the center of the symbol. Thus, unlike in the case of using the technique based on the asynchronous amplitude histogram (AAH), this technique is not affected by the transient characteristics of the modulated signals. The performance of the proposed monitoring technique is evaluated experimentally by using 10-Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals over wide ranges of OSNR and CD. We also evaluate the robustness of the proposed technique to the signal's transient characteristics.

Abstract
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have attracted considerable attention as potential biosensors. A MFC biosensor for rapid measurement of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) has been recently studied. However, a standardized bacterial mixture inoculated in the MFC biosensor for BOD measurement is unavailable. Thus, the commercial application of a MFC biosensor is limited. In this study, a mediator-less MFC biosensor inoculated with known mixed cultures to quickly determine BOD concentration was tested. Optimal external resistance, operating temperature and measurement time for the MFC biosensor were determined to be 5000 omega, 35 degrees C and 12h, respectively. A good relationship between BOD concentration and voltage output, high reproducibility and long-term stability for the MFC biosensor was observed. The newly developed MFC biosensor was inoculated with a mixture of six bacterial strains (Thermincola carboxydiphila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Ochrobactrum intermedium, Shewanella frigidimarina, Citrobacter freundii and Clostridium acetobutylicum) capable of degrading complex organic compounds and surviving toxic conditions. The described MFC biosensor was able to successfully measure BOD concentrations below 240 mg L(-1) in real wastewater samples.

Abstract
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can, besides running on wastewater, also derive energy directly from certain aquatic plants. However, few studies have focussed on electricity generation using aerobic anodes. This study presents a comparison of the MFC performances of an anaerobic-anode MFC (ana-MFC) and an aerobic-anode MFC (aa-MFC), and shows their individual conditions for optimal operation. Results show that the maximum power density of 7.07 +/- 0.45 mW/m2 for the ana-MFC occurred at 500 omega, whereas the aa-MFC had a maximum power density of 2.34 +/- 0.16 mW/m2 at 2200 omega. The ana-MFC generally achieved high electricity generation, and the aa-MFC achieved relatively high electricity generation when fed with a diluted substrate. In the ana-MFC, the optimal substrate for electricity generation was glucose (fermentable substrate); however, glucose and acetic acid (non-fermentable substrate) were both suitable substrates for the aa-MFC. The optimal gas retention times of the ana-MFC and the aa-MFC were 9 and 120 s, respectively. This retention time is an important limiting factor of electricity generation for the ana-MFC. The aa-MFCs fed with different substrates exhibited non-significant differences between bacterial communities. We observed the relative diversities of bacterial communities in the ana-MFC fed with various substrates. The results of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis suggest that Ochrobactrum intermedium, Delftia acidovorans, and Citrobacterfreundii may be potential electrogenic bacteria. To our knowledge, this is the first study comparing the MFC performances of anaerobic and aerobic anodes.

Abstract
A chemical-biological process was performed to remove a high concentration of H2S in biogas. The high iron concentration tolerance (20gL(-1)) of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans CP9 provided sufficient ferric iron level for stable and efficient H2S elimination. A laboratory-scale apparatus was setup for a 45 d operation to analyze the optimal conditions. The results reveal that the H2S removal efficiency reached 98% for 1500ppm H2S. The optimal ferric iron concentration was kept between 9 and 11gL(-1) with a cell density of 10(8)CFUg(-1) granular activated carbon and a loading of 15gSm(-3)h(-1). In pilot-scale studies for biogas purification, the average inlet H2S concentration was 1645ppm with a removal efficiency of up to 97% for a 311d operation and an inlet loading 40.8gSm(-3)h(-1). When 0.1% glucose was added, the cell density increased twofold under the loading of 65.1gSm(-3)h(-1) with an H2S removal efficiency still above 96%. The analysis results of the distribution of microorganisms in the biological reactor by DGGE show that microorganism populations of 96.7% and 62.7% were identical to the original strain at day 200 and day 311, respectively. These results clearly demonstrate that ferric iron reduction by H2S and ferrous iron oxidation by A. ferrooxidans CP9 are feasible processes for the removal of H2S from biogas.

Abstract
The efficiency of a coupled photocatalytic-biological system for removing crystal violet (CV) from an aqueous solution was assessed. Initial experiments demonstrated that the optimal operating parameters for the photoreactor were a 1.5-h reaction time, pH 7.0, and a 2.0-min retention time. Under these conditions, the photocatalytic reaction reduced the toxicity of the CV solution by 94%. Subsequent evaluation of the performance and characteristics of the coupled photocatalytic-biological system in terms of CV removal revealed that the coupled system successfully removed and efficiently mineralized CV in a semi-continuous mode when the CV concentration was <150mgL(-1). Based on our analysis of the degradation products, CV degradation in this coupled system involved stepwise demethylation and aromatic ring opening. Phylogenetic analysis of the bioreactor effluent showed that the predominant phyla were Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria, suggesting that this coupled system is conducive for such processes as demethylation, aromatic ring opening, carbon oxidation, and nitrification. These results were verified in a GC-MS analysis. To our knowledge, this is the first report on CV removal using a coupled system.

Abstract
We evaluate the impacts of using multi-level modulation formats on the transmission capacity of the multi-core fiber (MCF) having trench-assisted index profile and hexagonal layout. For this evaluation, we utilize the spectral efficiency per unit area, defined as the spatial spectral efficiency (SSE). The results show that the SSE improvement achievable by using the higher-level modulation format can be reduced due to its lower tolerance to the inter-core crosstalk. We also evaluate the effects of using large effective area on the transmission capacity of the trench-assisted MCF. The results show that the use of large effective area can decrease this capacity due to the increased inter-core crosstalk and lengthened cable cutoff wavelength, although it can help increase the transmission distance. Thus, it is necessary to optimize the effective area of MCF by considering both the SSE and transmission distance. However, the results indicate that the effect of using different effective areas on the SSE-distance product is not significant, and it is not useful to increase the effective area of the trench-assisted MCF to be larger than ~110 μm(2).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enteric glia form a network in the intestinal mucosa and have been suggested to engage in multidirectional interactions with the epithelium, blood vessels, nerves, and immune system. However, due to the dispersed nature of the glial network, standard histology cannot provide a global view of the network architecture. We prepared transparent human colon mucosa for three-dimensional (3-D) confocal microscopy with S100B immunostaining to reveal the location-dependent glial network for qualitative and quantitative analyses. METHODS Full-thickness human colons were acquired from colectomies performed for colorectal cancer. We targeted the mucosa away from the tumor site to characterize the glial network morphology. Optical clearing (use of immersion solution to reduce scattering) was applied to generate transparent specimens for deep-tissue microscopy. KEY RESULTS Two features of the glial network were seen: (i) A dense glial population resides at the crypt base/mucosal boundary in contact with the lymphatic vessels, and (ii) from the base, the glial network elongates along the crypt axis with peri-cryptic and peri-vascular connections toward the opening. We quantified the mucosal glia as the S100B-positive cells with at least two processes extending from the cell body. Examples of the global and in-depth imaging of adenoma were given to illustrate the morphological correlation between the loss of glial fibers and the aberrant crypts. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES We have established a useful approach for 3-D imaging, panoramic illustration, and quantitation of the enteric glia in the human colon mucosa to help characterize their roles with mucosal components in health and disease.

Abstract
We demonstrate the 40-Gb/s upstream transmission in the 60-km reach wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM PON) implemented by using directly modulated reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) and self-homodyne receivers. It is difficult to operate the RSOA at 40 Gb/s due to its limited modulation bandwidth. To overcome this problem and generate 40-Gb/s upstream signal, we utilize the quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) format and the offset polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) technique. For this purpose, we install two RSOAs at each ONU and provide the seed light for these RSOAs by polarization-multiplexing the outputs of two lasers with a small frequency offset (20 GHz). This frequency offset is used to separate the polarization-multiplexed seed light by using a simple delay-line interferometer (DLI), instead of the polarization-beam splitter and polarization controller, at the ONU. The separated seed light is modulated by each RSOA at 20 Gb/s in the QPSK format, and then combined again by the DLI before sent back to the central office (CO). The results show that this WDM PON can support the transmission of 40-Gb/s channels spaced at 50 GHz over 60 km without using any remote optical amplifiers.

Abstract
The use of matured compost as an inoculation agent to improve the composting of vegetable and fruit wastes in a laboratory-scale composter was evaluated, and the commercial feasibility of this approach in a pilot-scale (1.8 x 10(4) L) composter was subsequently confirmed. The effect of aeration rate on the physico-chemical and biological properties of compost was also studied. Aeration rate affected the fermentation temperature, moisture content, pH, O2 consumption rate, CO2 production rate and the formation of odour. The optimal aeration rate was 2.5 L air/kg dry solid/min. The CO2 production rate approached the theoretical value during composting and was linearly dependent on temperature, indicating that the compost system had good operating characteristics. The inoculation of cellulolytic bacteria and deodorizing bacteria to compost in the pilot-scale composter led to an 18.2% volatile solids loss and a 64.3% volume reduction ratio in 52 h; only 1.5 ppm(v) odour was detected. This is the first study to focus on both operating performance and odour removal in a pilot-scale composter.

Abstract
Chitosan is a potential substitute for traditional aluminium salts in water treatment systems. This research compared the coagulant performance of acid-soluble chitosan with water-soluble chitosan and with coagulant mixtures of chitosan and aluminium sulfate (alum). We also assessed the coagulant performance of chitosan and poly-aluminium chloride (PAC) to remove kaolinite from turbid water. In addition, we evaluated their respective coagulation efficiencies under different coagulant concentrations, degrees of turbidity (NTU) and pH levels. Furthermore, we determined the size and settling velocity of flocs formed by these coagulants in order to illustrate major factors affecting kaolinite coagulation. The optimal concentrations of acid- versus water- soluble chitosan required to remove kaolinite from a 300 NTU suspension were 4.0 and 10.0 mg/l, respectively-with individual efficiencies of 79.3 and 92.4%, in that order. Optimum concentrations ofwater-soluble chitosan demonstrated a broader range than that of acid-soluble chitosan. In addition, it is of note that chitosan/alum and chitosan/PAC water-soluble coagulant mixtures demonstrated much wider ranges of optimal concentrations for turbidity reduction than either alum or PAC alone. Moreover, our water-soluble chitosan coagulant mixtures produced denser floc with elevated settling velocities that favour cost savings relevant to both installation and operational expenses. Based on our observations of these noteworthy performances, we confidently propose that a coagulant mixture with a 1:1 mass ratio of chitosan and alum presents a remarkably more cost-effective alternative to the use of chitosan alone in water treatment systems.

Abstract
Providing intensive psychosocial intervention within the 5-year critical period following the first psychotic episode is important for both symptomatic and functional recovery. Recently, community mental health centres in Korea have begun to shift their main roles from care of those with chronic schizophrenia to early detection of and interventions for those with first-episode psychosis. This pioneering approach was initiated by the Seoul Mental Health Center, which established a community network, formed a clinical consortium with hospitals and clinics, and developed guidelines for early psychosis detection and management and for the Social Treatment for Early Psychosis (STEP) programme. The One-STEP programme, provided during hospitalisation, has been especially efficient in obtaining a high acceptance rate for community services. Several key issues are discussed with regard to the successful establishment of the close partnership between community mental health centres and hospitals / clinics.

Abstract
We demonstrate a long-reach wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM PON) operating at the symmetric rate of 10.3 Gb/s. For the cost-effectiveness, we realize the upstream transmission by utilizing directly-modulated TO-can packaged reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) and digital coherent receivers. In addition, to overcome the limited modulation bandwidth of this TO-can packaged RSOA (~2.2 GHz) and operate it at 10.3 Gb/s, we utilize the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) format and the electronic phase equalization technique. The result shows that we can extend the maximum reach of the 10.3-Gb/s RSOA-based WDM PON to ~80 km without using any remote amplifiers.

Abstract
We demonstrate that the correlation-based optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) can be used for the in-service monitoring of the 64-split time-division-multiplexed passive optical network (TDM PON). To achieve this objective, we superimpose a pseudo noise (PN) sequence having a modulation depth of ~40% to the downstream signal and utilize it for the correlation detection. However, the use of such a large PN sequence can seriously deteriorate the performance of the downstream receiver. Thus, we apply 8B/10B encoding to the downstream signal, and then filter out the PN sequence at the downstream receiver by using a high-pass filter. As a result, the power penalty caused by the use of a large PN sequence is reduced to an acceptable level (<3 dB), while the dynamic range of this correlation-based OTDR is increased to ~30 dB. We then evaluate the performance of the proposed OTDR in the fiber link similar to the optical distribution network of the 64-split TDM PON. The results show that this OTDR can detect both the reflective and non-reflective events occurred in the feeder fiber as well as the reflective events in the drop fibers even in the 64-split TDM PON.

Abstract
Acinetobacter calcoaceticus YC210 has been isolated and its ability to remove Victoria Blue R (VBR) from aqueous solution was assessed. The effects of various factors on decolorization efficiency were investigated in a batch system. The decolorization efficiency was found to be optimal within a pH of 5-7 and increased with VBR concentration up to 450 mg/l with high efficiency (94.5%) in a short time. The decolorization efficiency was significantly affected by cell concentrations. The decolorization of VBR by A. calcoaceticus YC210 followed first order kinetics. The apparent kinetic parameters of the Lineweaver-Burk equation, R(VBR,max) and K(m), were calculated as 6.93 mg-VBR/g-cell/h and 175.8 mg/l, respectively. Based on the biodegradation products, VBR degradation by A. calcoaceticus YC210 involves a stepwise demethylation process to yield partially dealkylated VBR species. To our knowledge, this is the first report using microbes to remove VBR. It clearly demonstrates the dealkylation pathway of VBR degradation.

Abstract
The antibacterial activity of water-soluble chitosan derivatives prepared by Maillard reactions against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, and Salmonella typhimurium was examined. Relatively high antibacterial activity against various microorganisms was noted for the chitosan-glucosamine derivative as compared to the acid-soluble chitosan. In addition, it was found that the susceptibility of the test organisms to the water-soluble chitosan derivative was higher in deionized water than in saline solution. Metal ions were also found to reduce the antibacterial activity of the water-soluble chitosan derivative on S. aureus. The marked increase in glucose level, protein content and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was observed in the cell supernatant of S. aureus exposed to the water-soluble chitosan derivative in deionized water. The results suggest that the water-soluble chitosan produced by Maillard reaction may be a promising commercial substitute for acid-soluble chitosan.

Abstract
1. Evidence has accumulated in mammals to support the idea that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions and mutations might contribute to ageing and reproductive failure. White Roman geese were monitored to evaluate the effect of large-scale deletions of mtDNA in an avian species. 2. A total of 340 samples from 114 dead embryos, 111 weak goslings, and 115 normal goslings were used in this experiment. The regions of these two large-scale mtDNA deletions, ΔmtDNA6829 and ΔmtDNA6992, were between the COI and ND5 genes. A 3·6% (4 out of 111) positive sample was detected in the weak goslings. In contrast, no large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions were detected in either the dead embryos (0 out of 114) or the normal goslings (0 out of 115). 3. Large-scale mtDNA deletions may be a factor causing weak goslings.

Abstract
Average emission levels as high as 800 ppm(v) NH(3) have often been found during the anaerobic fermentation process. At these levels, NH(3) is regarded as an environmental toxic compound. High concentrations of NH(3) gas are difficult to treat in a single treatment process, suggesting that, in terms of economic cost and treatment performance, a coupled system may be a feasible technological alternative. In the coupled TiO(2) photocatalytic-biological treatment system evaluated here, the optimal gas retention time for NH(3) removal--in terms of removal efficiency and capital cost--was 26 s. High gas temperatures, high NH(3) concentrations, and low oxygen contents were unfavorable conditions for NH(3) removal by the photoreactor. The coupled system successfully removed concentrated NH(3) gas (R % > 97 %) under disrupted and shutdown conditions. The photoreactor component of the system successfully fulfilled its role as a pretreatment process and enhanced the performance of the biotrickling filter at a high inlet NH(3) load (2,277 g-N m(-3) day(-1)). Potential ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, including Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas sp., were isolated under the high inlet NH(3) load condition. These microbial strains have a potential as biological agents in the removal of high concentrations of NH(3) in waste gas or wastewater.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been demonstrated that the deletion, mutation, hypermethylation and subcellular location of the tumor suppressor phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) are closely correlated with carcinogenesis, progression and prognosis of malignancy. Both mutation and the microsatellite instability of the PTEN gene influence regulation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. This study investigated whether loss of nuclear PTEN is correlated with chemosensitivity, clinicopathological parameters and survival. METHODS Intracellular levels of PTEN of multiple cell lines of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) were evaluated by Western blotting and immunocytochemistry. The chemosensitivity of cell lines with various expression levels of PTEN was evaluated using 5-flurouracil (5-FU), oxaliplatin and irinotecan (CPT), and clinical significance was evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis of 133 CRC specimens. RESULTS Colon cancer cell lines HT-29, LoVo and SW480 differed in expression of PTEN, with high, moderate and low levels, respectively. HT-29 and LoVo PTEN expression was suppressed by a low concentration of 5-FU and oxaliplatin; however, SW480 was insensitive to these chemotherapeutic agents. Nuclear PTEN was overexpressed in most (>80%) normal colon mucosa samples, but the incidence significantly decreased (89.2% → 53.4%) in the CRC group. PTEN in the nucleus was negatively correlated with tumor size and vascular invasion in CRC, and CRC patients with negative PTEN expression in the nucleus exhibited poor survival. CONCLUSION Cell lines with a high expression of PTEN are sensitive to chemotherapy with 5-FU and oxaliplatin. Nuclear PTEN expression gradually decreases after malignant transformation, and loss of PTEN expression in the nucleus is associated with tumor progression and poor clinical outcome in CRC.

Abstract
We develop a novel phasor monitor to obtain the constellation diagram from asynchronously sampled data measured by using the delay-detection technique. This phasor monitor consists of three parts; a phase-adjustment-free delay-interferometer, an optical front-end made of three photodetectors, and analog-to-digital (A/D) convertors, and a digital signal processor. We operate the A/D convertor at the sampling rate much slower than the symbol rate and acquire the data asynchronously. However, despite the use of such a slow and asynchronous sampling rate, we obtain the clear eye and constellation diagrams by utilizing the software-based synchronization technique based on a novel phased-reference detection algorithm. Thus, the proposed phasor monitor can be implemented without using high-speed A/D convertors and buffer memories, which have been the major obstacles for the cost-effective realization of the phasor monitor. For a demonstration, we realize the proposed phasor monitor by using an A/D converter operating at 9.77 MS/s and used it for the constellation monitoring and bit-error-rate (BER) estimation of 10.7-Gsymbol/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) and differential 8-ary phase-shift keying (D8PSK) signals.

Abstract
We report here both the successful treatment of DMS in a biofilter and the dynamic changes that occur in the composition of the bacterial community of the biofilter during this process. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of eubacterial 16S rDNA samples taken from packing material at different DMS removal stages revealed 11 distinct bands. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the sequences of these bands were closest to sequences of species of the Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. The specific occurrence of these bacterial species varied mainly with DMS load, but it was also affected by the addition of glucose and by ambient temperature. Based on the characteristics of the identified species, the system is conducive for such processes as sulfur oxidation, sulfate reduction, carbon oxidation, and fermentation. The strains identified in this study are potential candidates for purifying waste gas effluents containing DMS gas.

Abstract
We generate the phase-modulated signal by utilizing the chirp characteristics of the directly-modulated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) for the cost-effective realization of a long-reach wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM PON). We first investigate the relation between the amplitude and phase modulation indices in a directly-modulated RSOA and optimize these modulation indices to maximize the symbol distance on the constellation diagram. The results show that, by operating the RSOA under this optimum condition, we can achieve the excellent receiver sensitivity of -49.8 dBm at 1.25 Gb/s. We implement a long-reach WDM PON by using the phase-modulated RSOAs and self-homodyne receivers, and demonstrate the error-free transmission of 1.25-Gb/s signal over a 110-km long link without using any optical amplifiers.

Abstract
Methods to detect the presence of coliform bacteria in drinking water usually involve a series of complex cultivating steps that are time-consuming and subject to external influences. For this reason, the new 16S rRNA probe has been developed in this study as an alternative detector PCR-ELISA technique that does not involve the culture of bacteria and that is able to detect, identify, and quantify the representative coliform species present in water samples. Our results indicate that this technique is both rapid (detection time of 4 h) and accurate (1.4% error rate). The limit of detection (LOD) was 5 CFU/100 ml for total coliforms, which meets the standards set by most countries for drinking water. Our comparative study demonstrated that this PCR-ELISA method is superior to current conventional methods in terms of detection time, LOD, and accuracy.

Abstract
Polymerase chain reaction analysis in combination with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to determine changes in the composition of the bacterial community of a bioreactor during ammonia removal. A minimum of 13 bands were observed in the DGGE profile. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that phylum Proteobacteria was predominantly represented in the bacterial community of the bioreactor, followed by Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Flavobacteriaceae. However, the occurrence and predominance of specific bacterial species varied with the concentrations of NH(3) introduced into the bioreactor. The complexity of the bacterial species generally decreased with increasing inlet NH(3) concentration. Based on the characteristics of the identified species, there is a potential for nitrification, denitrification, nitrate reduction, nitrite reduction, and ammonia assimilation to occur simultaneously in the bioreactor. The strains identified in this study are potential candidate strains for the purification of waste gases containing high concentrations of NH(3).

Abstract
To shorten the time needed to measure biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in water samples and to provide a rapid feedback of the real condition of water quality, we tested and evaluated the validity and reliability of luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri, Photobacterium phosphoreum, and recombinant Escherichia coli as potential indicators of BOD in the domestic wastewaters. The results indicate that the luminescence intensities of these strains are dependent on temperature, pH, and BOD concentration. In comparison to the standard BOD(5) method, the time needed for BOD measurement can be shortened by 90, 120, and 150 min when V. fischeri, P. phosphoreum, and recombinant E. coli, respectively, are used. Recombinant E. coli can be adapted to measure BOD in domestic wastewater containing a wide range of BOD concentrations, V. fischeri is not suitable for measuring diluted wastewater, and P. phosphoreum has only a limited application in measuring concentrated wastewater. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in which V. fischeri, P. phosphoreum, and recombinant luminescent E. coli are compared in terms of their potential in BOD measurement systems.

Abstract
In our study, we have isolated a relatively newly identified bacteria species, Pandoraea pulmonicola YC32, and first assessed its capability to treat malachite green (MG). The effects of various factors on decolorization efficiency were investigated in a batch system. The decolorization efficiency was found to be optimal within a pH of 7-10 and it increased, with increasing initial MG concentration up to 100 mg/l. The relationship between the decolorization rate and MG concentration agreed with Lineweaver-Burk equation. The apparent kinetic parameters, R(MG,max) and K(m), were 6.23 mg-MG/g-cell/h and 153.4 mg/l, respectively. The initial step in the biodegradation pathway of MG by P. pulmonicola YC32 was a reduction or N-demethylation reaction. We achieved a decolorization efficiency of 85.2% with 50mg/l MG in the immobilized P. pulmonicola YC32 continuous column system. This is the first report on the application of a continuous column system to decolorize MG using a microorganism.
