Diagnostic value of serum amyloid A in differentiating the inflammatory disorders in wild birds. Front Vet Sci 2024; 11:1284113. Abstract
Rescued wild birds have very high rates of inflammatory diseases; however, there have been limitations in assessing them sensitively. Few studies have examined acute-phase proteins in wild birds. In this study, serum amyloid A (SAA) was evaluated as an inflammatory indicator along with traditional indices such as white blood cell count, albumin, and albumin/globulin ratio. In total, 291 samples from 139 birds of six avian species were analyzed. All samples were divided into four groups (severe, moderate, mild injuries, and clinically healthy) based on clinical examinations and evaluated by group. SAA levels were measured using an anti-chicken SAA ELISA kit and compared with leukocyte counts, albumin concentrations, and albumin/globulin ratios. Differences among groups were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by a post hoc test using Dunn's multiple comparisons with SPSS V27. Statistical significance was set at a value of p of <0.05. The median concentration and interquartile range (ng/mL) of SAA in each group were 78.10 ng/mL (50.71-109.30), 31.15 ng/mL (19.85-49.24), 9.68 ng/mL (4.71-22.06), and 3.10 ng/mL (1.50-6.00). We observed a significant difference in the mean levels between the groups (p < 0.001), with the same results observed across species. All four indices showed significant differences in mean values between the groups (p < 0.001). In addition, SAA showed rapid changes in periodically collected samples, reflecting either a positive treatment response or the onset of subclinical diseases. SAA can be used to detect inflammatory conditions and asymptomatic disease in wild birds and is helpful in accurately identifying current health status, which is essential for successful treatment and release.

Abstract
Despite the importance of antimicrobial resistance, only a few studies on the antimicrobial susceptibility on wild animals have been conducted owing to their population, accessibility, and characteristics. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of antimicrobial resistance pattern in Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis isolated from the feces of captive wild animals in a zoo. A total of 61 captive wild animals were included in this study. E. coli was isolated from 58 of the 61 animals and E. faecalis was isolated from 29 animals. Among the isolated E. coli strains, ampicillin exhibited the highest resistance rate (27/29, 93.1%). Of these, 18 strains (18/29, 62%) showed multidrug resistance. The multilocus sequence typing (MLST) test showed that only ST155 was detected twice, while the other 16 strains showed different ST types. Among the E. faecalis strains, two were susceptible to all tested antimicrobials, whereas the remaining 27 strains showed resistance to one or more antimicrobials. Nine strains (9/27, 31%) showed multidrug resistance. Among the E. faecalis strains, resistance to quinupristin/dalfopristin was the highest at 96.3% (26/27), while the MLST of the nine MDR strains showed no predominant ST. Genetic association with human isolates or livestock products was observed in the isolated ST types. This indicates that antibiotic resistance in the zoo is responsible for the use of antibiotics and the partial horizontal transmission between humans and animals through feeding or contact.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infectious diseases transmitted by wild animals are major threats to public health. This study aimed to investigate the potential of rescued wild animals that died of unknown causes as reservoirs of infectious agents. From 2018 to 2019, 121 dead wild animals (55 birds and 66 mammals) were included in this study. All wild animals died during treatment after anthropogenic events. After deaths of animals, necropsies were performed and trachea, lungs, large intestine (including stool), and spleen were collected to determine causes of deaths. A high-throughput screening (HTS) quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) designed to detect 19 pathogens simultaneously against 48 samples in duplicate was performed using nucleic acids extracted from pooled tissues and peripheral blood samples. If positive, singleplex real-time PCR was performed for individual organs or blood samples. RESULTS The HTS qPCR showed positive results for Campylobacter jejuni (10/121, 8.3%), Campylobacter coli (1/121, 0.8%), Mycoplasma spp. (78/121, 64.5%), and Plasmodium spp. (7/121, 5.7%). Singleplex real-time PCR confirmed that C. jejuni was detected in the large intestine but not in the blood. C. coli was only detected in the large intestine. Mycoplasma spp. were detected in all organs, having the highest proportion in the large intestine and lowest in the blood. Plasmodium spp. was also detected in all organs, with proportions being were similar among organs. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that wild animals can become carriers of infectious agents without showing any clinical symptoms.

Abstract
During cryopreservation, sperm undergoes structural and molecular changes such as ice crystal formation, DNA fragmentation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to decreased sperm quality after thawing. Antioxidants play a crucial role in preventing these damages, both in vivo and in vitro. One potent antioxidant is myo-inositol, known for its protective effects on sperm against ROS. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of myo-inositol on cryopreserved boar semen. The semen was diluted, cooled, and cryopreserved using a BF5 extender. It was then divided into five groups: control and different concentrations of myo-inositol (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mg/mL). The post-thaw evaluation included assessments of motility, viability, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), caspase activity, gene expression, ROS levels, apoptosis, and IVF with treated semen. Results showed that myo-inositol at 0.5 mg/mL improved motility, acrosome integrity, and fertilization ability. It also reduced the expression of pro-apoptotic genes and increased SMCP expression. Lower concentrations also demonstrated improved viability and reduced apoptosis and ROS levels. In conclusion, myo-inositol treatment during cryopreservation improved sperm quality, reduced apoptosis and ROS levels, and enhanced fertility rates in boar semen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rocuronium bromide has been evaluated as a mydriatic agent in birds, but the species applied were limited and the dose and effect were variable. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of topical rocuronium bromide as mydriatics in 4 species according to horizontal palpebral fissure length: Feral pigeon (Columba livia), Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), Northern boobook (Ninox japonica), and Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo). METHODS A total of 32 birds (8 for each species) were included as pre-releasing examination. Rocuronium bromide was instilled in one randomly selected eye of each bird based on palpebral fissure length criteria (0.5 mg/50 µL for pigeons, 1 mg/100 µL for kestrels and boobook owls, and 2 mg/200 µL for eagle owls). The contralateral eye was used as control and treated with normal saline. After instillation of the drug, pupil diameter, pupillary light reflex, intraocular pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were evaluated at 10 min intervals up to 180 min and at 30 min intervals up to 360 min. RESULTS Statistically significant mydriasis was obtained in all birds (p < 0.001). However, in boobook and eagle owls, marked mydriasis persisted until 360 min. Side effects including corneal erosion and lower eyelid paralysis were common, which was observed in 26/32 birds. Blepharospasm was also noted during this study. No systemic adverse signs were observed. CONCLUSIONS Rocuronium bromide could be a good mydriatics option for 4 species of birds, however, further studies are needed to find lowest effective dose to reduce drug-related side effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine pulmonary anthracosis in zoo, wildlife, and companion animals of Jeollabuk-do Province, South Korea. ANIMALS A total of 350 animals of 61 different species, belonging to 3 classes (mammals: n = 38; avian: 21; and reptiles: 2) from different habitats in Jeollabuk-do Province, were examined. PROCEDURES Gross lung examination and tissue sampling were done at postmortem, and histopathological analysis was microscopically done on hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides. RESULTS Macroscopic analysis of anthracotic lung tissue revealed minute (pinpoint size) spots and black pigmentation in a scattered and/or coalescing fashion. The presence of carbon particles was noted in 154 (44%, 154/350) cases. Based on habitation, zoo animals had the highest frequency of anthracosis in the lung (55.2%, 69/125), followed by companion animals (45.2%, 56/124) and wildlife animals (28.7%, 29/101). There was an association between habitation and the presence of anthracosis (P < .05). CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study revealed evidence that the presence of anthracosis is associated with the environmental air quality of zoo, wildlife, and companion animals in Jeollabuk-do Province, South Korea. Air pollution may affect the respiratory health of the endangered species at the Jeonju Zoo as well as the human population. Continuous monitoring of particulate matter and establishing policies that control industrialization around the province would enable quick action to curb any potential respiratory health risks to animals kept in the urban cities of the province.

Abstract
A fledgling feral pigeon with systemic protozoal infection was referred with corneal protrusion in the right eye after being treated for a corneal ulcer for 12 days. Ophthalmic examination revealed a corneal bulla covering almost the entire central cornea and preventing the eyelids from closing. Gelatinous corneal stroma with numerous heterophils surrounding the corneal bulla was also detected on cytologic examination. Bullous keratopathy and melting keratitis in the right eye were diagnosed. Temporary tarsorrhaphy with topical eye drops was prescribed for a week; however, the bulla persisted. A modified nictitating membrane flap was created under general anesthesia and maintained for 2 weeks. The corneal bulla resolved, and corneal thickness was restored. The pigeon was presented again with recurrence of the corneal bulla in the right eye after 45 days. Alternative surgical options were recommended; however, the pigeon was euthanized because the protozoa-induced intra-oral and intra-aural masses caused malformation of the beaks, which made voluntary feeding impossible.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the distribution and epidemiological relatedness of
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from
companion dogs, owners, and residential environments of 72 households. Sampling was
performed twice from January to June 2018 and a total of 2,592 specimens were collected.
The specimens collected from each household were streaked on CHROM agar S.
aureus and the colonies grown on the medium were further identified using a
mass spectrometry microbial identification system. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing,
Panton-Valentine-Leukocidin (PVL) gene PCR, staphylococcal cassette
chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, Staphylococcus
aureus Protein A (spa) typing, pulsed-field gel
electrophoresis (PFGE), and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) were conducted to evaluate
the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the MRSA isolates. A total of 65
S. aureus strains (2.5%) were isolated and 49 (1.9%) of 65 strains were
MRSA displaying cefoxitin-resistance with mecA carriage. MRSA strains
were isolated from dogs (n=6, 9.2%), owners (n=27, 41.5%), and residential environments
(n=16, 24.6%), respectively. Overall prevalence of non-duplicated MRSA was 16.7% (12/72
households) at household level. ST72-SCCmec IVc MRSA clones predominantly
appeared in MRSA-positive families. Furthermore, PFGE analyses showed that
ST72-SCCmec IVc-t324 is shared between dog owners and dogs. To our
knowledge, this is the first study to report the sharing of ST72 MRSA between dogs and
their owners.

Abstract
Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus) are widespread in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Mostly, Korean water deer are essential hosts for maintaining ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs). Here, we investigated the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) among rescued Korean water deer. Anaplasma phagocytophilum (21.4%, 6/28), Anaplasma capra (14.3%, 4/28), Babesia capreoli (3.6%, 1/28), and Coxiella burnetii (3.6%, 1/28) were detected, but Borrelia burgdorferi, Ehrlichia, Rickettsia, and Theileria infections were not found. A. phagocytophilum was the most commonly detected pathogen, and co-infection with A. capra and B. capreoli was also noted in one Korean water deer. To our knowledge, this is the first article of B. capreoli infection in Korean water deer in the ROK. The infecting isolate of A. phagocytophilum was genetically characterized by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and ankyrin-related protein (ankA) gene. Although the 16S rRNA gene alone may not be informative enough to delineate distinct host species, ankA-based phylogeny revealed a high identity of Korean water deer sequences with those of the causative agent of human granulocytic anaplasmosis. A. capra was detected by using citrate synthase gene (gltA), heat-shock protein (groEL), and major surface protein 4 (msp4) genes. Phylogenetic tree based on these gene markers revealed that there were at least two distinct variants within A. capra circulating in the ROK. One variant originated from different hosts including humans, ticks, goats, and sheep, whereas the other variant was reported recently in Korean water deer in the ROK. Consequently, these sequences were identified to belong to a zoonotic species. Sequencing analysis of the 18S rRNA gene revealed that our isolate belonged to B. capreoli and was distinct from Babesia divergens and Babesia venatorum. Moreover, our isolate showed 92.2% homology with B. capreoli sequences, indicating that these differences may be attributed to the different tick species that transmit B. capreoli or to different host species. Genotyping and phylogenetic analysis of C. burnetii based on 16S rRNA and IS1111 genes revealed that our isolate was grouped with several strains of C. burnetii and was genetically distant from Coxiella-like bacteria isolates. The present results highlight that Korean water deer act as potential reservoir hosts for zoonotic TBPs, and thus play an important role in the transmission of TBDs in humans, animals, and livestock.

Abstract
Biofilm production is a well-known causative factor of catheter- and medical device-related sepsis. Its high prevalence in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) has recently been reported. Information on biofilm production in CoNS isolated from wild animals is lacking. Herein, we studied the biofilm formation capabilities of CoNS isolated from rescued wild animals in the Republic of Korea. Swab samples were collected from the conjunctiva, nasal cavity, perianal area, and rectum for mammals while the sampling was done from the conjunctiva, oral mucosa, pericloacal area, and cloaca for birds. Isolation of CoNS was based on morphological and biochemical analyses along with molecular typing. Biofilm production was analyzed using 96-well plate based quantitative adherence assays. The studies demonstrated that CoNS of mammalian origin have higher biofilm-producing ability (70.4%) than the isolates from birds (62.5%). In particular, all methicillin-resistant (MR) CoNS isolated from mammals were capable of biofilm formation while only 63.3% of MR CoNS isolated from birds could produce biofilms. The MR CoNS isolated from mammals also had a significantly higher ability to form biofilms (100%) than methicillin susceptible CoNS (60.0%) than those isolates from birds. The findings show that wild animals may act as reservoirs as well as possible transmitters of biofilm-mediated antibiotic resistant genes.

Abstract
A wild adult Eurasian scops owl (Otus scops), which was unable to fly, was rescued. Physical examination revealed a sticky exudate around the glottis. Heterophilic leukocytosis was identified through complete blood count, and radiography revealed a marked elevated density of posterior air sacs and inner cavities in both sides of the humerus and femur. Fungal cultures of samples taken from the owl suggested a respiratory fungal infection. Through molecular typing, the fungus was identified as Epicoccum nigrum. The owl was treated with oral itraconazole and broad-spectrum antibiotics. After one month, the inner cavities of pneumatic bones were slightly distinguishable by radiography and the owl started to fly well. Two months later, the air sac and all pneumatic bones displayed normal appearance.

Abstract
Background Enterocytozoon bieneusi is a unicellular microsporidian fungal pathogen that infects a broad range of animal hosts, including wild and domestic animals and humans. The infection burden of this parasite in wild animals in Korea is largely unknown. In this study, the occurrence and genotypes of E. bieneusi were investigated in wild animal populations in Korea. Methods A total of 157 fecal samples (97 from Korean water deer, 48 from raccoon dogs and 12 from other taxa) were collected from wild animals at five wildlife centers in Korea. Genomic DNA was extracted from the samples and screened by nested-PCR targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rRNA, followed by sequence analysis to determine the genotype(s) of E. bieneusi. Results The overall prevalence of E. bieneusi was 45.2% (71/157), with rates of 53.6% (52/97) in Korean water deer, 35.4% (17/48) in raccoon dogs and 16.7% (2/12) in other taxa. We detected seven ITS genotypes, including one known (genotype D) and six new genotypes (Korea-WL1–Korea-WL6). Phylogenetically, all detected genotypes clustered with counterparts belonging to group 1, which includes isolates from different animal hosts and humans, suggesting their zoonotic potential. Conclusions Our survey results indicate that E. bieneusi circulates widely in wild animals in Korea. These findings address the role of wildlife as a potential source of microsporidiosis in domestic animals and humans.

Abstract
The gene for New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-5 (NDM-5) in Escherichia coli has been identified in many countries mainly from human clinical specimens. The isolates carrying this gene are even more rarely isolated from companion animals. In this study, four carbapenem-resistant isolates were recovered from four dogs in Korea. All isolates carried blaNDM-5 and exhibited resistance to meropenem and imipenem, and were susceptible to colistin. Epidemiological analysis showed that all four isolates were sequence type 410 (ST410) and shared 99% similarity as determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis. Among the four isolates, the Z0117EC0033 strain was randomly selected for whole-genome sequencing, composed of a 4.7Mb circularized chromosome carrying the CMY-2 gene and two plasmids. The first plasmid of the IncFIB type had 83 coding sequences (CDS) in ca. 74 kb. The second smaller plasmid of the IncX3 type had 57 CDS and carried only the blaNDM-5 gene in ca. 46 kb. The plasmid structures were highly similar (> 99%) to those of the NDM-5 human-like IncX3 plasmid. This is the first report of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from companion animals in Korea. The human-like blaNDM-5 IncX3 plasmid identified in this study suggests a potential transmission route of the NDM-5 plasmid between humans and companion animals.

Abstract
Arthropod-borne viruses (Arboviruses) are transmitted by arthropods such as Culicoides biting midges and cause abortion, stillbirth, and congenital malformation in ruminants, apparently leading to economic losses to farmers. To monitor the distribution of Culicoides and to determine their relationship with different environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, wind speed, and altitude of the farms) on 5 cattle farms, Culicoides were collected during summer season (May-September) in 2016 and 2017, and analyzed for identification of species and detection of arboviruses. About 35% of the Culicoides were collected in July and the collection rate increased with increase in temperature and humidity. The higher altitude where the farms were located, the more Culicoides were collected on inside than outside. In antigen test of Culicoides against 5 arboviruses, only Chuzan virus (CHUV) (2.63%) was detected in 2016. The Akabane virus (AKAV), CHUV, Ibaraki virus and Bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) had a positive rate of less than 1.8% in 2017. In antigen test of bovine whole blood, AKAV (12.96%) and BEFV (0.96%) were positive in only one of the farms. As a result of serum neutralization test, antibodies against AKAV were generally measured in all the farms. These results suggest that vaccination before the season in which the Culicoides are active is probably best to prevent arbovirus infections.

Abstract
Background: High prevalence of methicillin resistance among clinical isolates of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius obtained from dogs was reported in Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea. However, no information on genetic lineage and clonal spread is currently available. Objective: The aim is to identify the genetic diversity of methicillin-resistant or -susceptible S. pseudintermedius (MRSP and MSSP, respectively) from healthy dogs. Animals and methods: From 119 healthy dogs, 29 isolates consisting of 20 MRSP and 9 MSSP were collected from June 2013 to February 2014. Phenotypic features, antibiogram, multilocus sequence type (MLST), Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type and spa gene type were analyzed. Results: MLST showed 24 sequence types (STs), including 20 new STs that were genetically distinct from the previous STs in other geographic areas. SCCmec typing revealed that all isolates had SCCmec type V, a predominant type in North America. spa gene typing was successful in only 13 isolates (10 MRSP and 3 MSSP) and revealed two known types (t02 and t06), as well as one novel type (t73). Conclusion: Our cumulative data indicate the presence of various populations of S. pseudintermedius in clinically normal dogs in Seoul metropolitan area.

Abstract
Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the most commonly acquired cardiac disease in dogs. This study evaluated the relationship between genetic variations in the serotonin transporter (SERT) gene of Maltese dogs and DMVD. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples collected from 20 client-owned DMVD Maltese dogs and 10 healthy control dogs, and each exon of the SERT gene was amplified via polymerase chain reaction. The resulting genetic sequences were aligned and analyzed for variations by comparing with reference sequences; the predicted secondary structures of these variations were modeled and cross-verified by applying computational methods. Genetic variations, including five nonsynonymous genetic variations, were detected in five exons. Protein structure and function of the five nonsynonymous genetic variations were predicted. Three of the five polymorphisms were predicted to be probable causes of damage to protein function and confirmed by protein structure model verification. This study identified six polymorphisms of the SERT gene in Maltese dogs with DMVD, suggesting an association between the SERT gene and canine DMVD. This is the first study of SERT mutation in Maltese dogs with DMVD and is considered a pilot study into clinical genetic examination for early DMVD diagnosis.

Abstract
PurposeTo identify prognostic factors in patients referred with endophthalmitis after cataract surgery, and to evaluate the efficacy of primary vitrectomy as an initial management.MethodsOver an eight-year study period, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 164 patients who were referred with endophthalmitis following cataract surgery. Treatment generally conformed to standard guidelines, although primary vitrectomy was performed in several eyes with a visual acuity of hand motion or better, depending on the patient's status. Using multivariate analysis, we analyzed outcomes to determine the effect on final visual outcome.ResultsA final visual acuity of ≥20/40 was achieved in 92/164 (56.1%) cases after treatment. Bacterial cultures showed bacterial growth in 89/164 cases (54.3%). Among the various baseline characteristics, old age (P=0.028), poor visual acuity at presentation (P=0.004), gram-negative bacterial infection (P=0.030), and short time between cataract surgery and signs of endophthalmitis (P=0.021) were associated with poor visual outcome. The visual outcome showed no significant difference, in terms of initial treatment feature, between the primary vitrectomy with intraocular antibiotics injection (IOAI) and IOAI-only groups. However, reintervention was significantly less frequent in the primary vitrectomy group than in the IOAI group (12.5 and 32.7%, respectively; P=0.002).ConclusionOld age, poor visual acuity at presentation, type of cultured organism (gram-negative bacteria), and early onset of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery were significantly related to poor visual outcome after endophthalmitis treatment. Primary vitrectomy may decrease the need for reintervention to control infection, although the treatment showed no benefits with regard to visual outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure serum homocysteine concentrations in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and identify any association between this variable and stage of MMVD. ANIMALS 53 client-owned dogs with MMVD and 10 healthy control Beagles. PROCEDURES Dogs with MMVD were allocated to 3 groups in accordance with the staging system for chronic valvular heart disease in dogs and cats of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Blood samples were collected from all dogs, and serum homocysteine and cardiac troponin 1 concentrations were measured by enzyme immunoassay and chemiluminescence immunoassay, respectively. Analyte values were tested for associations with each other and with stage of MMVD. RESULTS A significant correlation was identified between serum homocysteine concentration and stage of MMVD. Mean ± SD concentrations were 6.72 ± 1.65 μmol/L for control dogs, 13.37 ± 4.16 μmol/L for dogs with stage B MMVD, 18.86 ± 6.73 μmol/L for dogs with stage C disease, and 28.26 ± 4.48 μmol/L for dogs with stage D disease. In addition, serum homocysteine concentration was correlated with serum cardiac troponin 1 (r = 0.34) and creatinine (r = 0.46) concentrations, systolic blood pressure (r = 0.57), and left atrium-to-aortic root ratio (r = 0.28), all of which were positively correlated with stage of MMVD. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Serum homocysteine concentrations of dogs with MMVD were significantly higher than those of control dogs, and significant correlations were identified between these values and several risk factors for heart failure. Measurement of serum homocysteine concentration may be useful in the prediction of severity of disease in dogs with MMVD.

Abstract
This study was conducted to establish accurate baseline values of clinical laboratory data with regard to age-related changes in the Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana). In addition, the availability of an automated hematological cell counter was evaluated. A total of 94 clinically normal storks, including 64 young storks (<1 year old; 30 male and 34 female) and 30 adults (> 1 year old; 17 male and 13 female) were included. Hematological assays were performed using manual and automated cell counters and serum biochemistry profiles were examined using an automated analyzer. There were no significant differences in any parameters between male and female storks, while 16 parameters were significantly different between young and adult storks. Of these 16 parameters, total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine, triglyceride, total bilirubin, potassium, white blood cell count, packed cell volume, mean cell volume and hemoglobin levels were higher in adult storks than in young storks, while the latter showed higher glucose, uric acid and alkaline phosphatase levels, as well as a higher sodium/potassium ratio. The results presented herein will aid researchers who work for the conservation and rehabilitation of this endangered species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the usefulness of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BM-MSC) therapy for the treatment of dogs with experimentally induced acute kidney injury. ANIMALS 6 healthy dogs. PROCEDURES After induction of kidney injury (day 0) with cisplatin (5 mg/kg, IV), dogs immediately received saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (10 mL; n = 3) or BM-MSCs (1 × 10(6) cells/kg in 10 mL of saline solution; 3) IV. A CBC, serum biochemical analysis, and urinalysis were performed for each dog before administration of cisplatin and on days 1 through 4. Glomerular filtration rate was determined for all dogs on days -7 and 2; BM-MSC tracking by MRI was performed on BM-MSC-treated dogs on days -14 and 4. After sample collection and BM-MSC tracking on day 4, all dogs were euthanized; kidney tissue samples underwent histologic evaluation, immunohistochemical analysis, and cytokine profiling via reverse transcriptase PCR assays. RESULTS Kidney tissue from both groups had mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration, tubular necrosis, dilated tubules, and glomerular damage. However, there was less fibrotic change and increased proliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells in the BM-MSC-treated dogs, compared with findings for the control dogs. Expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α and transforming growth factor-β were lower in the BM-MSC-treated group, compared with findings for the control group. Laboratory data revealed no improvement in the renal function in BM-MSC-treated dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results of this study suggested that autologous BM-MSCs may accelerate renal regeneration after experimentally induced acute kidney injury in dogs.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) administration in dogs with experimentally induced acute kidney injury. ANIMALS 6 healthy dogs. PROCEDURES After induction of kidney injury (day 0) with cisplatin (5 mg/kg, IV), the dogs were randomly assigned into 2 groups (n = 3 dogs/group). Then dogs immediately received GCSF (10 μg/kg) or 1 mL of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (control group) SC; this treatment was repeated once daily for 4 additional days (days 1 through 4). A once-daily CBC (day 0 to 4), serum biochemical analysis (day 0 to 3), and urinalysis (day 0 to 3) were performed for each dog; samples were collected before administration of cisplatin (day 0) and before treatment with GCSF or saline solution (days 1 through 4). After sample collection and treatment on day 4, all dogs were euthanized; kidney tissue samples underwent histologic evaluation, immunohistochemical analyses, and cytokine profiling via reverse transcriptase PCR assay. RESULTS In the GCSF-treated group, the histologic evaluation and immunohistochemical analyses of kidney tissue revealed less fibrotic change and greater proliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells, compared with findings in the control group. The mRNA profiles of kidney tissue from the GCSF-treated group indicated lower expression of tumor necrosis factor-α and tumor growth factor-β, compared with findings in the control group; however, concentrations of factors related to renal regeneration were not greater in the GCSF-treated group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated that GCSF treatment can impede renal fibrosis and increase proliferation of renal tubules after experimentally induced acute kidney injury in dogs.

Abstract
This study investigated colonization and association of staphylococci between healthy dogs and their owners. In a cross-sectional study, nasal carriage and antibiotic susceptibility of isolated staphylococci were determined for 119 dogs and 107 owners. Relatedness of the Staphylococcus isolates in dogs and their owners was investigated using antibiograms, toxin profiles, and genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence type, and spa typing. Risk factors for carriage of methicillin-resistant staphylococci in dogs were also evaluated. Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from 65 (60.7%) owners and 44 (37.0%) dogs. The following species were isolated, listed in order of decreasing frequency: S. epidermidis, S. pseudintermedius, S. aureus, S. scheiferi subsp. coagulans, S. haemolyticus, S. sciuri, S. saprophyticus and S. warneri. S. pseudintermedius (65.9%) was the major isolate in dogs while S. epidermidis (81.5%) was the major type in owners. Among the isolates, 71.6% were methicillin resistant (MR) and 95.4% of the isolates demonstrated multi-drug resistance regardless of the origin. Only one dog-owner pair shared the same Staphylococcus spp. (S. pseudintermedius); however, the organisms were of different PFGE subtypes and exhibited different antibiotic resistance and toxin profiles while both isolates displayed same sequence type (ST365). While the dog-origin isolate showed spa type t02, the owner-origin isolate was negative to PCRs targeting spa gene sequence. Risk factor analysis showed that the presence of cohabitant animals was correlated with the nasal carriage of MR staphylococci in dogs. The cumulative data indicated that animal- and owner-origin staphylococci have various subtypes with high prevalence of MR; however, the bacteria are not shared between healthy dogs and their owners.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a common bacterial pathogen in dogs with pyoderma, otitis externa, and wound infection. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biofilm-producing ability for methicillin-resistant (MRSP) and methicillin-susceptible (MSSP) S. pseudintermedius isolates from healthy dogs. ANIMALS AND METHODS Ninety-two isolates, consisting of 40 MRSPs and 52 MSSPs, were included in the study. Biofilm production was determined using a quantitative adherence assay in 96-well tissue culture plates and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting icaA and icaD genes. The prevalence of methicillin-resistance in the isolated S. pseudintermedius was calculated using standard equations. The presence of methicillin resistance (MR) and biofilm-producing ability between nasal- and ocular-origin S. pseudintermedius was compared using the chi-square (χ(2)) test. The associations between the degree of biofilm production and the presence of methicillin-resistance or sample origin were determined using Fisher's exact test. RESULTS All of the MRSP and MSSP isolates were able to produce biofilms, and 93.5% of the isolates were strong or moderate biofilm producers, regardless of the presence of methicillin-resistance or source. Methicillin-resistance was more prevalent in nasal isolates. There was no association between the presence of icaA/icaD and biofilm production. CONCLUSIONS Findings from this study indicate a high prevalence of biofilm-producing S. pseudintermedius in healthy dogs in South Korea, which may have a significant influence to animal health.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) monotherapy for large submacular hemorrhage (SMH) secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). METHODS A total of 49 treatment-naive patients (49 eyes) with large SMH (more than five disc areas (DAs)) secondary to nAMD were retrospectively included. All patients were treated with an initial series of 3 monthly intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, followed by as-needed injections. At the 12-month follow-up, changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), hemorrhage area, central foveal thickness, and development of vitreous hemorrhage after treatment were evaluated. RESULTS The mean SMH area was 13.9 ± 8.8 disk areas (DAs) and mean symptom duration was 7.25 ± 5.9 days at baseline. The mean number of injections was 4.49 ± 1.61. Twelve months after treatment, the mean BCVA significantly improved from 1.14 ± 0.61 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR; 20/276, Snellen equivalent) to 0.82 ± 0.53 logMAR (20/132; P = 0.002). Twenty-four eyes (49%) showed improvement of more than three lines of BCVA at 12 months after treatment. Baseline BCVA (odds ratio (OR), 5.119; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.993-9.545; P = 0.004), duration of symptoms (OR, 0.727; 95% CI, 0.332-0.952; P = 0.024), hemorrhage area (OR, 0.892; 95% CI, 0.721-0.965; P = 0.011), and baseline central foveal thickness (OR, 0.881; 95% CI, 0.722-0.945; P = 0.032) were significantly associated with good visual acuity 12 months after treatment. CONCLUSIONS Intravitreal anti-VEGF monotherapy is a valuable treatment option for large SMH secondary to nAMD.

Abstract
Meningoencephalitis (ME) is a common inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system in dogs. Clinically, ME has both infectious and non-infectious causes. In the present study, a multiplex quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (mqPCR) panel was optimized for the detection of eight canine neurologic pathogens (Blastomyces dermatitidis, Cryptococcus spp., Neospora caninum, Borrelia burgdorferi, Bartonella spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Ehrlichia canis, and canine distemper virus [CDV]). The mqPCR panel was subsequently applied to 53 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples collected from dogs with ME. The analytic sensitivity (i.e., limit of detection, expressed as molecules per 1 µL of recombinant vector) was 3.8 for CDV, 3.7 for Ehrlichia canis, 3.7 for Bartonella spp., 3.8 for Borrelia burgdorferi, 3.7 for Blastomyces dermatitidis, 3.7 for Cryptococcus spp., 38 for Neospora caninum, and 3.7 for Toxoplasma gondii. Among the tested CSF samples, seven (15%) were positive for the following pathogens in decreasing order of frequency: Cryptococcus spp. (3/7), Blastomyces dermatitidis (2/7), and Borrelia burgdorferi (2/7). In summary, use of an mqPCR panel with high analytic sensitivity as an initial screen for infectious agents in dogs with ME could facilitate the selection of early treatment strategies and improve outcomes.

A multiplex RT-PCR assay was developed to detect feline coronavirus. To improve primer binding, inosine was used for primer design. The assay could detect and differentiate FCoV, CCoV, and TGEV precisely.
Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is a pleomorphic, enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus. Owing to the differences in its genotype, FCoV belongs to a separate clade along with other viruses, such as transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) and canine coronavirus (CCoV), which can be isolated from cats. In this study, a PCR assay was developed to differentiate these coronaviruses concurrently. Multiplex differential RT-PCR was performed with primers based on the highly conserved coronavirus membrane protein. Three primer sets were designed: a primer pair (S1 and S2) that can bind to conserved sequences in all target coronaviruses, a CCoV-specific primer (S3), and a TGEV-specific primer (S4). Because of the high sequence homology among FCoV, CCoV, and TGEV, a nucleotide preceding the last pair of dissimilar nucleotides in S3 and S4 was substituted with an inosine to allow primer binding. This assay could detect and differentiate FCoV (n = 7), CCoV (n = 4), and TGEV (n = 8) precisely and did not show any cross-reactivity with other pathogens. These results suggest that this molecular approach provides a rapid and reliable way to detect FCoV, especially in feline clinical specimens.

Abstract
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is encoded by the ABCB1 gene and acts as an efflux pump for xenobiotics. In the Border Collie, a nonsense mutation caused by a 4-base pair deletion in the ABCB1 gene is associated with a premature stop to P-gp synthesis. In this study, we examined the full-length coding sequence of the ABCB1 gene in an ivermectin-sensitive Border Collie that lacked the aforementioned deletion mutation. The sequence was compared to the corresponding sequences of a wild-type Beagle and seven ivermectin-tolerant family members of the Border Collie. When compared to the wild-type Beagle sequence, that of the ivermectin-sensitive Border Collie was found to have one insertion mutation and eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the coding sequence of the ABCB1 gene. While the eight SNPs were also found in the family members' sequences, the insertion mutation was found only in the ivermectin-sensitive dog. These results suggest the possibility that the SNPs are species-specific features of the ABCB1 gene in Border Collies, and that the insertion mutation may be related to ivermectin intolerance.

Abstract
An 11-year-old, intact female, Yorkshire Terrier dog was presented with epigastric bulging. Results of a CBC included mild neutrophilia and thrombocytopenia. Radiographic examination and abdominal ultrasonography revealed abundant ascites and a well-circumscribed mass in the caudal region of the spleen. Abdominocentesis revealed bloody fluid. Cytologic analysis of the fluid revealed numerous clustered and individual large cells with moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. The spleen was surgically resected. An imprint smear of a white nodular tumor on the caudal pole of the spleen contained a bimorphic population of small and large lymphocytes. The cytologic diagnosis was lymphoma. Histologically, large lymphocytes with distinct borders and single nucleoli formed multiple neoplastic follicles. The final diagnosis was primary splenic lymphoma. Immunocytochemical staining results on buffy coat smears prepared from the ascites fluid showed the lymphocytes were negative for CD3 and positive for CD79a, indicating B-cell origin. Further investigation of the cell clusters using semiquantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR showed that ICAM-1, a cell-cell adhesion molecule, was overexpressed in the tumor cells, likely contributing to the clustering of neoplastic lymphocytes in the ascites fluid. Usually, round cells are not adherent; however, spontaneously detached round cells may form clusters, as in this case, and must be differentiated from epithelial tumors.

Abstract
The anti-atherogenic effects of the citrus flavonoids, naringin and naringenin, were evaluated in high cholesterol-fed rabbits. At 3 months of age, 30 male New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits were divided into three groups (n = 10 per group). The rabbits were fed a 1% cholesterol diet alone (control group) or a diet supplemented with either 0.1% naringin or 0.05% naringenin for 8 weeks. The plasma lipoprotein levels, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and high-density lipoprotein showed no significant differences in the control and experimental groups. Hepatic acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity was slightly low in naringin (5.0%)- and naringenin (15.0%)-fed rabbits, compared to control group. The aortic fatty streak areas were significantly lower in both the naringin (19.2 +/- 5.6%)- and naringenin (18.1 +/- 6.5%)-supplemented groups than in the control group (60.4 +/- 14.0%). The expression levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), by semiquantitative RT-PCR analysis of the thoracic aorta, were significantly lower in the flavonoids supplemented groups than in the control group. These results suggest that the anti-atherogenic effect of the citrus flavonoids, naringin and naringenin, is involved with a decreased hepatic ACAT activity and with the downregulation of VCAM-1 and MCP-1 gene expression.

Abstract
The taxonomic position of Arthrobacter siderocapsulatus Dubinina and Zhdanov 1975AL was investigated using 16S rDNA, fatty acid and phenotypic analyses. The type strain (NCIMB 11286T) showed 99.85% 16S rDNA similarity to the type strain of Pseudomonas putida. Phenotypic properties of the two strains were compared using API 20NE and BIOLOG kits. Identical reactions were recorded for all tests, except for assimilation of malonic acid. The two strains also showed almost identical cellular fatty acid profiles. On the basis of evidence presented in this and earlier studies, it is proposed that Arthrobacter siderocapsulatus is a later subjective synonym of Pseudomonas putida (Trevisan 1889) Migula 1895AL.

Abstract
Studies were performed to determine if the growth of Methylomicrobium album BG8 on methanol could be enhanced through the provision of chloromethane. M. album BG8 was found to be able to oxidize chloromethane via the particulate methane monooxygenase with an apparent K(s) of 11+/-3 microM and V(max) of 15+/-0.6 nmol (min mg protein)(-1). When up to 2.6 mM chloromethane was provided with 5 mM methanol, methanotrophic growth was significantly enhanced in comparison to the absence of chloromethane, indicating that methanotrophs can utilize chloromethane to support growth, although it could not serve as a sole growth substrate. [(14)C]chloromethane was found to be oxidized to [(14)C]CO(2) as well as incorporated into biomass. These results indicate that reactions previously thought to be cometabolic may actually provide some benefit to methanotrophs and that these cells can use multiple compounds to enhance growth.

Abstract
The effects of hydrogen peroxide, which fetal bovine serum (FBS) releases, on proliferation have been studied in ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts. Cell proliferation, when activated by FBS, was inhibited by catalase in ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts, but did not in primary osteoblast-like cells. Serum-induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK) activity was reduced by the pretreated catalase in ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts. In addition, the present studies demonstrate that addition of FBS led to an increase of fluorescence of dihydrorhodamine 123, indicating formation of free radicals including hydrogen peroxide in ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts, but not in primary osteoblast-like cells. These phenomena may account for the generation of reactive oxygen species during cellular proliferation in ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts.

Abstract
The degradation kinetics of ten halogenated hydrocarbons by Methylomicrobium album BG8 expressing particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) and the inhibitory effects of these compounds on microbial growth and whole-cell pMMO activity were measured. When M. album BG8 was grown with methane, growth was completely inhibited by dichloromethane (DCM), bromoform (BF), chloroform (CF), vinyl chloride (VC), 1,1-dichloroethylene (1,1-DCE), and cis-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE). Trichloroethylene (TCE) partially inhibited growth on methane, while dibromomethane (DBM), trans-dichloroethylene (trans-DCE), and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1, 1-TCA) had no effect. If the cells were grown with methanol, DCM, BF, CF, and 1,1-DCE completely inhibited growth, while VC, trans-DCE, TCE, and 1,1,1-TCA partially inhibited growth. Both DBM and cis-DCE had no effect on growth with methanol. Whole-cell pMMO activity was also affected by these compounds, with all but 1,1,1-TCA, DCM, and DBM reducing activity by more than 25%. DCM, DBM, VC, trans-DCE, cis-DCE, 1,1-DCE, and TCE were degraded and followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. CF, BF, and 1,1,1-TCA were not measurably degraded. These results suggested that the products of DCM, TCE, VC, and 1,1-DCE inactivated multiple enzymatic processes, while trans-DCE oxidation products were also toxic but to a lesser extent. cis-DCE toxicity, however, appeared to be localized to pMMO. Finally, DBM and 1,1,1-TCA were not inhibitory, and CF and BF were themselves toxic to M. album BG8. Based on these results, the compounds could be separated into four general categories, namely (1) biodegradable with minimal inactivation, (2) biodegradable with substantial inactivation, (3) not biodegradable with minimal inactivation, and (4) not biodegradable but substantial inactivation of cell activity.

Abstract
Although the acceleration of bone regeneration by radiation has been reported, the mechanisms of action of radiation on bone are unclear. The present results indicate that ionizing radiation-stimulated differentiation could result from the generation of reactive oxygen species during radiation exposure. The free radical release is considered as the most important mechanism of bone effect by radiation treatment. In addition, we report that radiation induced transient activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase/stress-activated protein kinase (JNK/SAPK) activation and the transcription factor, AP-1. The JNK and AP-1 activation is mediated with radiation-released free radicals in ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts. These results indicate that ionizing radiation at a single dose of up to 5 Gray stimulates differentiation of ROS 17/2.8 osteoblasts via free radial release which may affect JNK/SAPK and AP-1 activities.
