Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is highly lethal upon onset of acute aortic diseases (AAD) or rupture. Dyslipidaemia and hyperuricaemia are important risk factors for the development of AAA and AAD as well as aortic disease-related death. The aim of this study was to explore whether uric acid (UA) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (UHR) can be used as an independent predictor of the presence of AAA or AAD. METHODS Three hundred subjects, including 100 AAA patients (AAA group), 100 AAD patients (AAD group) and 100 controls (CON group), were recruited in this study. UHR and other serum samples were obtained upon the patients' admission before any medical treatment. The optimal cut-off points of UHR were determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS The UHR in AAA group was significantly higher than that in CON group, but there was no significant difference between AAD group and CON group. The optimal cut-off point of UHR for AAA was 7.78 (sensitivity 84.7%, specificity 62.4%, and AUC 0.811; p < 0.001), and UHR (OR: 1.122, 95%CI: 1.064-1.184; p < 0.001) was found to be an independent factor for predicting AAA after adjusting for traditional AAA risk factor. CONCLUSION UHR can be widely used in clinical practice as an auxiliary tool for screening AAA. The optimal cut-off point for UHR to AAA was determined for the first time in Chinese subjects.

Abstract
Patients with atherosclerotic disease remain at increased risk of future events despite receiving optimal medical treatment. This residual risk is widely heterogeneous, but lipoprotein particles and their content play a major role in determining future cardiovascular events. Beyond low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), other lipoprotein particles have not demonstrated similar contribution to the progression of atherosclerosis. Statins, ezetimibe, and more recently, proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors and bempedoic acid have confirmed the causal role of LDL-c in the development of atherosclerosis. Data on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) suggested a possible causal role for atherosclerosis; nonetheless, HDL-c-raising treatments, including cholesteryl-ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors and niacin, failed to confirm this relationship. On the other hand, mendelian randomisation revealed that triglycerides are more implicated in the development of atherosclerosis. Although the use of highly purified eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was associated with a reduction in the risk of adverse cardiovascular events, this beneficial effect did not correlate with the reduction in triglycerides level and has not been consistent across large phase 3 trials. Moreover, other triglyceride-lowering treatments, such as fibrates, were not associated with a reduction in future cardiovascular risk. Studies assessing agents targeting angiopoietin-like 3 (lipoprotein lipase inhibitor) and apolipoprotein C3 antisense will add further insights into the role of triglycerides in atherosclerosis. Emerging lipid markers such as lipoprotein (a) and cholesterol efflux capacity may have a direct role in the progression of atherosclerosis. Targeting these biomarkers may provide incremental benefits in reducing cardiovascular risk when added to optimal medical treatment. This Review aims to assess available therapies for current lipid biomarkers and provide mechanistic insight into their potential role in reducing future cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Purpose White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are the common marker of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). Dyslipidemia plays a notable role in the pathogenesis of CSVD. However, the relationship between dyslipidemia and WMH is poorly elucidated. This study aims to investigate the association between serum lipid fractions and WMH in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Patients and Methods A total of 901 patients with AIS were included in this study. The burden of WMH, including deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMH), periventricular white matter hyperintensities (PVWMH), and total WMH load, were evaluated on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by the Fazekas scale. All the WMH burden were set as dichotomous variables. Serum levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were collected. The association of serum lipid fractions with WMH burden was analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. Results The average age of the participants was 67.6±11.6 years, and 584 cases (64.8%) were male. About 33.5% (n = 302) patients were smoker, and 23.5% (n = 212) patients had a history of alcohol consumption. The proportion of previous diabetes, ischemic cardiomyopathy and hypertension was 39.0% (n = 351), 21.2% (n = 191) and 75.9% (n = 684), respectively. The average of serum HDL-c, TC, TG, LDL-c levels for all participants were 1.26 ± 0.28 mmol/l, 4.54 ± 1.06 mmol/l, 1.67 ± 1.09 mmol/l, 3.08 ± 0.94 mmol/l. There were no statistical associations between HDL-c, TG, TC, LDL-c and each type of WMH burden (P > 0.05) in multivariate logistic regression analysis. Similar findings were found in subgroup analysis based on gender classification. Conclusion Serum lipid levels were not associated with the presence of any type of WMH in patients with AIS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholesterol plays important roles in β-amyloid (Aβ) metabolism and atherosclerosis. However, the relationships of plasma cholesterol levels with Aβ and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) burdens are not fully understood in Asians. Herein, we investigated the relationships between plasma cholesterol profile components and Aβ and CSVD burdens in a large, non-demented Korean cohort. METHODS We enrolled 1,175 non-demented participants (456 with unimpaired cognition [CU] and 719 with mild cognitive impairment [MCI]) aged ≥ 45 years who underwent Aβ PET at the Samsung Medical Center in Korea. We performed linear regression analyses with each cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-c], high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-c], and triglyceride) level as a predictor and each image marker (Aβ uptake on PET, white matter hyperintensity [WMH] volume, and hippocampal volume) as an outcome after controlling for potential confounders. RESULTS Increased LDL-c levels (β = 0.014 to 0.115, p = 0.013) were associated with greater Aβ uptake, independent of the APOE e4 allele genotype and lipid-lowering medication. Decreased HDL-c levels (β = - 0.133 to - 0.006, p = 0.032) were predictive of higher WMH volumes. Increased LDL-c levels were also associated with decreased hippocampal volume (direct effect β = - 0.053, p = 0.040), which was partially mediated by Aβ uptake (indirect effect β = - 0.018, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight that increased LDL-c and decreased HDL-c levels are important risk factors for Aβ and CSVD burdens, respectively. Furthermore, considering that plasma cholesterol profile components are potentially modified by diet, exercise, and pharmacological agents, our results provide evidence that regulating LDL-c and HDL-c levels is a potential strategy to prevent dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is easily neglected in the non-obese population. TyG index (triglyceride glucose Index) and TG/HDL-c (triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) are new indicators to evaluate insulin resistance (IR). Fibroscan is a non-invasive way to assess hepatic steatosis [by control attenuation parameters (CAP)] and fibrosis [by liver stiffness measurement (LSM)].The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation of TyG and its combination with obesity indicators [TyG-waist circumference (WC), TyG-body mass index (BMI)] and TG/HDL-c with CAP and LSM. METHOD One thousand seven hundred seventy-six adults (age ≥ 20 years, BMI < 30 kg/m2) in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 were included. The correlations of CAP and LSM to the indexes were assessed by generalized linear models.. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to evaluate the diagnostic capability of the indicators on NAFLD and liver stiffness. RESULTS Survey-weighted percentage of NAFLD in non-obese was 38.6%. In the fully adjusted models, there were positive associations of TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC and TG/HDL-c to CAP, with the βs of 24.810, 0.704, 0.29 and 2.983 (all p < 0.05), respectively. There were positive associations of TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, and TG/HDL-c to NAFLD, with ORs of 3.387, 1.03, 1.010 and 1.281 ((all p < 0.05)).The positive association was detected for TG/HDL-c and TyG-WC and LSM with βs of 0.057 and 0.004(p = 0.021 and p = 0.003).TyG-WC were positively associated with liver stiffness with OR of 1.006(95%CI = 1.002, 1.012). Furthermore, the TyG-WC had the strongest diagnostic capability (ROC = 0.806; 95%CI: 0.785-0.826) on NAFLD in non-obese participants, with a specificity of 0.737 and sensitivity of 0.746. CONCLUSION In US non-obese population, the TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, and TG/HDL-c are positively correlated with CAP and NAFLD. TyG-WC has clinical importance in identifying NAFLD in the non-obese population.

Comparison of canola oil and olive oil consumption on the serum lipid profile in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Several randomized clinical trials have investigated the effects of canola oil (CO) compared to olive oil (OO) on the serum lipid profiles in adults. However, the results of these studies are inconsistent. Thus, this study aimed to assess the comparison of CO and OO consumption on the serum lipid components in adults. METHODS AND RESULTS The following online databases were searched until February 4th, 2022: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Google Scholar. The effect sizes were stated as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). A total of 13 eligible trials were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that the CO consumption, significantly reduced serum LDL-c (WMD: -6.13 mg/dl, 95%CI: -9.79, -2.46, p = 0.001), TC (WMD: -8.92 mg/dl, 95% CI: -13.52, -4.33, P < 0.001) and LDL-c/HDL-c ratio (WMD: -0.30; 95% CI, -0.53, -0.06, p = 0.01) levels compared to OO. There were no significant changes in the other components of the blood lipids. CONCLUSION The results of this review suggest that CO consumptionhas beneficial effects on LDL-c, TC, and LDL-c/HDL-c ratio compared to OO. Therefore, its replacement with OO can have cardioprotective impacts.

Abstract
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is hallmarked by irreversible dilation of the infrarenal aorta. Lipid deposition in the aortic wall and the potential importance of a lipid disorder in AAA etiology highlight the need to explore lipid variation during AAA development. This study aimed to systematically characterize the lipidomics associated with AAA size and progression. Plasma lipids from 106 subjects (36 non-AAA controls and 70 AAA patients) were comprehensively analyzed using untargeted lipidomics. An AAA animal model was established by embedding angiotensin-II pump in ApoE-/- mice for four weeks and blood was collected at 0, 2 and 4 weeks for lipidomic analysis. Using a false-discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05, a group of lysophosphatidylcholines (lysoPCs) were specifically decreased in AAA patients and mice. LysoPCs were principally lower in the AAA patients with larger diameter (diameter > 50 mm) than those with a smaller size (30 mm < diameter < 50 mm), and levels of lysoPCs were also found to be decreased with modelling time and aneurysm formation in AAA mice. Correlation matrices between lipids and clinical characteristics identified that the positive correlation between lysoPCs and HDL-c was reduced and negative correlations between lysoPCs and CAD rate, lysoPCs and hsCRP were converted to positive correlations in AAA compared to control. Weakened positive correlations between plasma lysoPCs and circulating HDL-c in AAA suggested that HDL-lysoPCs may elicit instinctive physiological effects in AAA. This study provides evidence that reduced lysoPCs essentially underlie the pathogenesis of AAA and that lysoPCs are promising biomarkers for AAA development.

Abstract
AIM Our study aimed to illustrate the effect of the antihistaminic drug azelastine on aortic calcification in diabetic hyperlipidemic (DH) rats along with the underlying molecular mechanism. METHODS Twenty-four male albino Wistar rats were categorised into four groups. One group received normal rodent chow (normal group), while the other groups were rendered diabetic and hyperlipidemic; one received no drugs and served as a positive control while the other two groups received either azelastine (4 mg/kg) or 10-dehydrogingerdione (10 mg/kg) orally and daily for 8 weeks. RESULTS Azelastine significantly reduced blood glucose, HbA1c and serum ALP, OCN, downregulated apo B, improved the lipid profile (LDL-c decrease and HDL-c increase), attenuated calcium deposition and aortic calcification as compared to control group. 10-DHGD showed comparatively lower effect. CONCLUSION Anti-calcifying effect of azelastine might be related to upregulation of apo A (HDL-c) and downregulation of apo B mRNA expression indeed good modulator of aortic calcification. IMPACT STATEMENT Many studies have indicated that high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) is inversely correlated with atherosclerotic plaque progression and could reduce cardiovascular disease risk. An anti-calcifying effect of HDL-c has been reported and targeting this lipoprotein may therefore be a valuable approach to vascular calcification control. Azelastine is a selective H1 antagonist that was identified to increase mRNA expression of apolipoprotein A. This encouraged us to investigate the effect of azelastine on lipid profile and markers of aortic calcification in DH rats. Our findings showed that azelastine ameliorated aortic calcification and increased apoA expression along with a decline in apo B. This may represent the underlying mechanism while the histopathological findings offered a significant support to the collected biochemical data.

Abstract
Aims and Background Determine the correlation between cardiovascular risk parameters with serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Patients and Methods Blood samples were obtained from 100 AMI patients (aged 40--60 years) admitted to the intensive care unit of our institution from March 2019 to February 2020, and from 40 age- and BMI-matched healthy adults. Results Median IL-6 and hs-CRP levels were significantly higher in the AMI group (P < 0.001), as were fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, and LDLc, while HDLc was significantly lower. In the AMI group, hs-CRP was significantly correlated with BMI (r = 0.531; P < 0.001) and waist circumference (r = 0.448; P < 0.001). No significant differences in hs-CRP and IL-6 levels were observed between male and female AMI patients (5.90 ± 2.0 vs. 6.80 ± 8.2, P = 0.166; 21.23 ± 8.2 vs. 21.06 ± 8.7, P = 0.948, respectively), although IL-6 levels significantly differed between male and female controls (6.64 ± 3.0 vs. 9.74 ± 4.7, P = 0.017). Conclusion IL-6 and hsCRP were significantly higher in the AMI group; however, no correlations with the biochemical parameters were observed. Further research into their involvement in the pathogenesis of AMI is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Guar gum can be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of dyslipidemia. However, based on data from different studies, the effectiveness of this product is not uniform. Therefore, we conducted a dose-response meta-analysis between guar gum supplementation and lipid profile. METHODS AND RESULTS Five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar) were searched to identify relevant articles published up to July 2020. The weighted mean difference (WMD) was derived based on the random-effects model. Overall findings were generated from 25 eligible trials. Patients' conditions included hyperlipidemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, overweight, carotid endarterectomy, and menopausal women. Prescribed gum dose varied between 100 mg/d and 30 g/d for 1-24 months. Compared with control groups, guar gum supplementation decreased total cholesterol (TC) by -20.41 mg/dL (95% CI: -26.76 to -14.07; P < 0.001) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) by -17.37 mg/dL (95% CI: -23.60 to -11.13; P < 0.001), but did not change triglycerides (TG) (WMD: -6.53 mg/dL, 95% CI: -16.03 to 2.97; P = 0.178) and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (WMD: -0.62 mg/dL, 95% CI: -1.68 to 0.44, P = 0.252). CONCLUSIONS Guar gum supplementation significantly reduced serum LDL-C and TC levels in patients with cardiometabolic problems, but had neutral effects on TG and HDL-C levels.

Abstract
CONTEXT Dyslipidemia is highly prevalent in youth with type 2 diabetes (T2D), yet the pathogenic components of dyslipidemia in youth with T2D are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the genetic determinants of lipid traits in youth with T2D through a genome-wide association study. DESIGN PARTICIPANTS AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We genotyped 206 928 variants and imputed 17 642 824 variants in 1076 youth (mean age 15.0 ± 2.48 years) with T2D from the Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) and SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth (SEARCH) studies as part of the Progress in Diabetes Genetics in Youth (ProDiGY) consortium. We performed association testing for triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) concentrations adjusted for the genetic relationship matrix within each substudy followed by meta-analyses for each trait. RESULTS We identified a novel association between a deletion on chromosome 3 (3:67817380_AT/A_Deletion:RP11-81N13.1) and triglyceride levels at genome-wide level of significance (P = 2.3 × 10-8) with each risk allele increasing triglycerides by 20%. We also identified a genome-wide significant signal at rs247617 (P = 5.1 × 10-9) between HERFUD1 and CETP associated with HDL-c, with carriers of 1 copy of the risk allele having twice higher HDL-c. CONCLUSIONS Our genetic analyses of lipid traits in youth with T2D have identified 1 novel and 1 previously known locus. Additional studies are needed to further characterize the genetic architecture of dyslipidemia in youth with T2D.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 patients develop hypolipidemia. However, it is unknown whether lipid levels have improved and there are potential sequlae in recovered patients. Objective In this follow-up study, we evaluated serum lipidemia and various physiopathological laboratory values in recovered patients. Methods A 3–6 month follow-up study was performed between June 15 and September 3, 2020, to examine serum levels of laboratory values in 107 discharged COVID-19 patients (mild = 59; severe/critical = 48; diagnoses on admission). Sixty-one patients had a revisit chest CT scan. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze changes in laboratory values at admission and follow-up. Results LDL-c and HDL-c levels were significantly higher at follow-up than at admission in severe/critical cases (p < 0.05). LDL-c levels were significantly higher at follow-up than at admission in mild cases (p < 0.05). Coagulation and liver functional values were significantly improved at follow-up than at admission for patients (p < 0.05). Increases in HDL-c significantly correlated with increases in numbers of white blood cells (p < 0.001) during patients’ recovery. With exclusion of the subjects taking traditional Chinese medicines or cholesterol-lowering drugs, LDL-c and HDL-c levels were significantly increased at follow-up than at admission in severe/critical cases (p < 0.05). Residue lesions were observed in CT images in 72% (44 of 61) of follow-up patients. Conclusions Improvements of LDL-c, HDL-c, liver functions, and incomplete resolution of lung lesions were observed at 3–6 month follow-up for recovered patients, indicating that a long-term recovery process could be required and the development of sequelae such as pulmonary fibrosis could be expected in some patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidaemia refers to lipid abnormalities consisting of either one or any combination of the following: elevated total cholesterol (TC), elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), elevated triglycerides (TG), and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). The prevalence of hypercholesterolaemia is steadily increasing in Malaysia. However, data on the prevalence of dyslipidaemia subtypes among Malaysians are lacking. This is important as it may have implications for preventive and management strategies for this increasing public health challenge. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of dyslipidaemia subtypes and their associated personal and clinical attributes in Malaysians. METHODS REDISCOVER, a prospective study, enrolled 11,288 adults where sociodemographic data, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, fasting lipid profile and glucose, and history of diabetes, hypertension, and smoking were obtained. The cross-sectional analytic sample presented in this article comprised 10,482 participants from baseline recruitment. The data was analysed by descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS The overall prevalence of elevated TC, elevated LDL-c, elevated TG, low HDL-c, and elevated non-HDL-c were 64.0% (95% CI 63.0-65.0), 56.7% (CI 55.7-57.7), 37.4% (CI 36.5-38.4), 36.2% (CI 35.2-37.1), and 56.2% (CI 55.3-57.2), respectively. Overweight, obesity, and central obesity were highly prevalent and significantly associated with elevated TC and all dyslipidaemia subtypes. Older age was associated with elevated TC, elevated LDL-c and elevated non-HDL-c. Hypertension was associated with elevated TC, elevated TG, and elevated non-HDL-c, while diabetes was associated with elevated TG and low HDL-c. CONCLUSIONS Elevated TC and all dyslipidaemia subtypes are highly prevalent in Malaysia where increased body mass seems the main driver. Differences in the prevalence and associated personal and clinical attributes may facilitate specific preventive and management strategies.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia/hyperlipidemia is recognized among the risk factors for lifestyle related diseases. A healthy diet, rich in vegetable oils such as rice bran oil (RBO), may aid to improve serum lipid levels. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of rice bran oil (RBO) consumption on serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and triglyceride (TG) levels in adults. The following online databases were searched for manuscripts published until October 7th 2020: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Google Scholar. The effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). A total of 8 eligible trials with 14 effect sizes were included in this meta-analysis. Our analysis revealed that the consumption of RBO significantly decreased serum TC (WMD: -7.29 mg/dL, 95% CI: -11.32, -3.25, P = 0.000), LDL-c (WMD: -7.62 mg/dL, 95% CI: -11.10, -4.14, P = 0.000) and TG (WMD: -9.19 mg/dL, 95% CI: -17.99, -0.38, P = 0.041) levels. So, available evidence suggests that RBO consumption can significantly decrease serum TC, LDL-c and TG levels. Hence, it may play a role in reducing dyslipidemia/hyperlipidemia risk.

Abstract
Background To date, limited data are available on metabolic syndrome prevalence among breast cancer survivors in Malaysia. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and abnormal metabolic syndrome components among breast cancer survivors in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Methods This cross-sectional study included 95 breast cancer survivors (age 53.7 ± 7.6 years) who have completed main cancer treatments for ≥6 months. Cancer survivors were recruited from two main government hospitals in Kelantan and Terengganu using a purposive sampling method. Results According to the Harmonized criteria, the metabolic syndrome prevalence was 50.5%. Among those with metabolic syndrome, the most prevalent abnormal metabolic components were triglycerides (91.2%), fasting blood glucose (79.6%) and HDL-c level (78.4%). Except for total cholesterol and LDL-c, all other metabolic syndrome components were significantly different (p < 0.05) between those with and without metabolic syndrome. Significant differences between metabolic syndrome and non-metabolic syndrome groups were found for weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat percentage and cancer stages (p < 0.05). However, no significant relationship was reported between sociodemographic, clinical parameters and metabolic syndrome among breast cancer survivors in this study. Conclusions Metabolic syndrome was highly prevalent among breast cancer survivors. It is recommended for health care professionals to closely monitor and improve the triglycerides, blood glucose and HDL-c level of the breast cancer survivors under their care to control the detrimental effect of metabolic syndrome. Abstract
Brown algae have been part of the human diet for hundreds of years, however, in recent years, commercial and scientific interest in brown algae has increased due to the growing demand for healthier diet by the world population. Brown algae and its metabolites, such as carotenoids, polysaccharides, phlorotannins, and proteins, have been associated with multiple beneficial health effects for different diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, one of the main causes of death in Europe. Since high blood cholesterol levels are one of the major cardiovascular risks, this review intends to provide an overview of current knowledge about the anti-hypercholesterolemic effect of different brown algae species and/or their isolated compounds.

Abstract
Background High IS level has been demonstrated to be associated with vascular calcification and lymphocyte functional disorders, which are both risk factors of CVD. Low HDL-c level is a risk factor of CVD in CKD patients. This study was designed to explore the potential relationship between IS and HDL-c levels in early stages of CKD population. Methods Patients of CKD stage 1-3 were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Correlations between HDL-c and IS levels were investigated among various clinicopathological variables through independent samples t test and multivariate logistic regression. Results A total of 205 CKD patients (96 men) aged 43.27 ± 13.80 years old were included in this research. There were 96 patients (46 men) in CKD stage1 and 109 (50 men) in CKD stage 2 or stage 3. IS levels were significantly higher in CKD 2 + 3 group (1.50 ± 1.74 μg/ml vs. 0.94 ± 0.66 μg/ml, p = 0.007), while HDL-c levels were lower (1.19 ± 0.39 mmol/L vs. 1.33 ± 0.45 mmol/L, p = 0.017) compared to CKD 1 group. Among all the patients, a negative correlation was observed between IS and HDL-c levels (r = −0.244, p = 0.001). IS level was an independent risk factor for low HDL-c (<1.04 mmol/L) incidence even after controlling for potential confounders including concomitant disease, age, sex, blood pressure, BMI and laboratory biochemical test including eGFR (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.11–2.39, p = 0.013). IS and HDL-c were both risk factors for predicting CKD stage 3. Conclusions In early CKD stages, low HDL-c level is associated with increased IS levels, which may be an important contributor in the development of dyslipidemia in CKD patients.

Abstract
The Mexican population has one of the highest prevalences of metabolic syndrome (MetS) worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with MetS and its components. First, we performed a pilot Genome-wide association study (GWAS) scan on a sub-sample derived from the Health Workers Cohort Study (HWCS) (n = 411). Based on GWAS results, we selected the rs1784042 and rs17120425 SNPs in the SIDT1 transmembrane family member 2 (SIDT2) gene for replication in the entire cohort (n = 1963), using predesigned TaqMan assays. We observed a prevalence of MetS in the HWCS of 52.6%. The minor allele frequency for the variant rs17120425 was 10% and 29% for the rs1784042. The SNP rs1784042 showed an overall association with MetS (OR = 0.82, p = 0.01) and with low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c) (odds ratio (OR) = 0.77, p = 0.001). The SNP rs17120425 had a significant association with type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in the overall population (OR = 1.39, p = 0.033). Our results suggest an association of the rs1784042 and rs17120425 variants with MetS, through different mechanisms in the Mexican population. Further studies in larger samples and other populations are required to validate these findings and the relevance of these SNPs in MetS.

Abstract
PURPOSE Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and low serum concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) are common coexisting metabolic disorders. ABCA1 variants have been shown to be associated to these conditions. We sought to test the combined effect of two ABCA1 gene common variants, rs2422493 (- 565C > T) and rs9282541 (R230C) on HDL-c levels and T2D risk. METHODS Path analysis was conducted in 3,303 Mexican-mestizos to assess the specific contributions of rs2422493 and rs9282541 ABCA1 variants, insulin resistance, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and age on HDL-c levels and T2D risk. Participants were classified into four groups according to their ABCA1 variants carrier status: (i) the reference group carried wild type alleles for both ABCA1 variants (-/-), (ii) +/- were carriers of rs2422493 but non-carriers of rs9282541, (iii) -/+ for carriers of rs9282541 but not carriers of rs2422493 and (iv) carriers of minor alleles for both SNPs (+/+). Principal components from two previous genome-wide association studies were used to control for ethnicity. RESULTS We identified significant indirect effects on T2D risk mediated by HDL-c in groups -/+ and +/+ (β = 0.04; p = 0.03 and β = 0.06; p < 0.01, respectively) in comparison to the -/- reference group. Low concentrations of HDL-c were directly and significantly associated with increased T2D risk (β = -0.70; p < 0.01). WHtR, male gender, age, and insulin resistance were also associated with T2D risk (p < 0.05). There was no significant direct effect for any of the ABCA1 groups on T2D risk: p = 0.99, p = 0.58, and p = 0.91 for groups +/-, -/+, and +/+ respectively. CONCLUSIONS The ABCA1 rs9282541 (R230C) allele is associated with T2D in Mexicans through its effect on lowering HDL-c levels. This is the first report demonstrating that HDL-c levels act as an intermediate factor between an ABCA1 variant and T2D.

Abstract
Background Many patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) suffer multiple organ dysfunctions. However, whether patients develop dyslipidemia is unknown. Objective In this study, we aimed to investigate the pathological alterations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), and total cholesterol (TC) in COVID-19 patients and their relationships with the disease severity. Methods A retrospective study was performed to examine serum levels of LDL-c, HDL-c, and TC on 597 COVID-19 patients (mild: 394; severe, 171; critical: 32) who were hospitalized in our center between February 1 and March 3, 2020. Age- and gender-matched normal subjects (n = 50) who had routine laboratory lipid tests between October 1 and November 1, 2019 in our center were included as the control group. Results LDL-c and TC levels were significantly lower in COVID-19 patients as compared with normal subjects (P < .001). There were significant and gradual decreases in levels of LDL-c (median (IQR) in mg/dL, mild: 91 (76, 104); severe: 86 (69, 102); critical: 69 (48, 81); P < .02) and TC (mild: 173 (148, 203); severe: 167 (138, 197); critical: 125 (95, 162); P < .05) across all three groups. HDL-c levels only decreased significantly in critical cases as compared with levels in mild and severe cases. LDL-c and TC levels inversely correlated with C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, and positively correlated with the number of lymphocytes in patients. Conclusions Development of hypolipidemia begins in patients with mild symptoms. It progressively becomes worse in an association with the disease severity. SARS-COV-2 causes multiple types of pathophysiologies including hypolipidemia. Decrease in LDL-c is observed as early as in patients with mild symptoms. Hypolipidemia positively correlates with the disease severity in patients. Hypolipidemia raises awareness to frontline physicians against this pandemic.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the associations between MetS and its components and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a population with arterial hypertension (AH), or diabetes mellitus (DM) accompanied by the Primary Health Care (PHC). PATIENTS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study with 788 individuals diagnosed with AH and/or DM followed by PHC of Viçosa, Brazil. Anthropometric, biochemical and clinical measures were performed for the diagnosis of MetS and CKD. MetS was identified using the NCEP-ATPIII criteria. CKD was identified by estimating the glomerular filtration rate using the CKD-EPI equation. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the chances of CKD associated with MetS and its components and specific combinations of components. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS reported in the population was 65.4%, that of hidden CKD was 15.4%. The prevalence of CKD among participants with MetS was 75.2%. The most prevalent component of MetS in the population was AH (96.7%). Elevated fasting blood glucose, central obesity, and reduced HDL-c were significantly associated with an increased chance of CKD (OR = 2.80, 95% CI 1.76-4.45, OR = 1.68, 95% CI, 05-2.71, OR = 1.61, CI 95% 1.03-2.50, respectively). For the multivariate adjustment, the participants with MetS were 2 times more likely to have CKD than those without MetS (OR = 2.07; 95% CI, 1.25-3.44). The combination of three components of MetS high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and elevated fasting blood glucose and the combination of four components of MetS high blood pressure, reduced HDL-c, high fasting blood glucose and abdominal obesity were associated with increased odds of CKD (OR = 2.67, CI 95% 1.70-4.20, OR = 2.50, CI 95% 1.55-4.02, respectively). CONCLUSION MetS, as well as its individual or combined components were independently associated with CKD in the population with AH and/or DM accompanied by PHC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Performing a kidney biopsy is necessary to accurately diagnose diseases such as glomerulonephritis and tubulointerstitial nephritis, among other such conditions. These conditions predispose patients to chronic kidney disease, as well as acute kidney injury (AKI). Notably, most epidemiological studies describing AKI have not investigated this patient population. METHODS Included patients admitted to the nephrology ward of a tertiary hospital who underwent percutaneous kidney biopsy. AKI was diagnosed based on the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria. RESULTS Of the 223 patients investigated, 140 (62.8%) showed AKI. Of these, 91 (65%), 19 (13.6%), and 30 (21.4%) presented with AKI classified as stages 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The primary indication for performing biopsy was nephrotic syndrome or nephrotic proteinuria (73 [52.1%] in the AKI vs. 51 [61.4%] in the non-AKI group, p = 0.048). Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis was the most prevalent primary disease (24 [17.1%] in the AKI vs. 15 [18.0%] in the non-AKI group, p = 0.150). Multivariate analysis of risk factors associated with AKI showed hemoglobin levels (odds ratio [OR] 0.805, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.681-0.951, p = 0.011), serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (HDL-c, OR 0.970, 95% CI 0.949-0.992, p = 0.008), and baseline serum creatinine levels (OR 2.703, 95% CI 1.471-4.968, p = 0.001) were significantly associated with AKI. CONCLUSIONS We observed a high prevalence of AKI in hospitalized patients who underwent kidney biopsy to investigate their renal disease, particularly glomerulonephritis. Higher levels of hemoglobin and serum HDL-c were associated with a lower risk of AKI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate associations between cardiovascular disease risk factors, including fasting glucose, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), LDL-c, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), C-peptide, creatinine kinase, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, C-reactive protein as well as homocysteine levels and cardiovascular events. METHODS Data from 1545 men aged ≥40 years, with testosterone deficiency (TD) (<300 ng/dL) and non-TD (≥300 ng/dL) which were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database 2011-2012 and analyzed. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed positive associations between TD and BMI (≥35 vs. < 18.5: OR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.19-5.32, p = .016), HDL-c (<0.91 vs. ≥0.91: OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.14-2.24, p = .006) and diabetes (diabetes vs. non-diabetes: OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.14-1.92, p = .004) as well as negative associations between TD and metabolic equivalent scores (≥12 vs. <12: OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.52-0.91, p = .009) and smoking (Ever vs. never: OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.51-0.94, p = .018). Furthermore, total serum testosterone levels were lower in patients with heart failure (p = .04) and angina/angina pectoris (p = .001) compared with subjects without these cardiac problems. CONCLUSION Low serum testosterone was associated with multiple risk factors for CHD.

Abstract
Background Few data has been available on the effect of serum HDL-C levels on the prognosis of lupus nephritis (LN) patients. The present study therefore aimed to explore the effect of serum HDL-C levels on LN patients. Methods We included 775 patients with follow-up information registered in an LN database between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2011. The patients were divided into groups with low, intermediate and high HDL-C, according to NCEP ATPIII criteria. Cox regression analyses were used to explore the effects of HDL-C levels on end-stage renal disease (ESRD), all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Results During a median follow-up of 56 months (3–206 months), 71 (9.2%) had ESRD. 84 (10.8%) deaths occurred, 17 (20.2%) of which were due to CVD. There was no statistically significant association of HDL-C category or continuous HDL-C levels with ESRD in the total cohort, but in subgroup analyses by eGFR, with each 0.1 mmol/L increase in HDL-C level, adjusted HRs for ESRD were 0.92 (95% CI: 0.83–1.04, P = 0.173) for eGFR ≥60 ml/min/1.73m2 and 1.11 (95% CI: 1.01–1.23, P = 0.036) for eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73m2. The effect of the interaction between eGFR category and serum HDL-C level on ESRD was statistically significant (β = −1.738, P = 0.005). Low HDL-C was associated with all-cause mortality (HR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.06–4.40, P = 0.033) with intermediate HDL-C as reference category after adjusting for several variables. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that high HDL-C levels were associated with increased risk of ESRD in LN patients with advanced renal dysfunction. While low HDL-C levels were associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality in LN patients. Abstract
Decreased HDL cholesterol (HDL-c) is considered as an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease in metabolic syndrome (Mets). Wendan decoction (WDD), a famous clinical traditional Chinese medicine formula in Mets in China, which can obviously up-regulate serum HDL-c levels in Mets. However, till now, the molecular mechanism of up-regulation still remained unclear. In this study, an integrated approach that combined serum ABCA1 in vivo assay, QSAR modeling and molecular docking was developed to explore the molecular mechanism and chemical substance basis of WDD upregulating HDL-c levels. Compared with Mets model group, serum ABCA1 and HDL-c levels intervened by two different doses of WDD for two weeks were significantly up-regulated. Then, kohonen and LDA were applied to develop QSAR models for ABCA1 up-regulators based flavonoids. The derived QSAR model produced the overall accuracy of 100%, a very powerful tool for screening ABCA1 up-regulators. The QSAR model prediction revealed 67 flavonoids in WDD were ABCA1 up-regulators. Finally, they were subjected to the molecular docking to understand their roles in up-regulating ABCA1 expression, which led to discovery of 23 ABCA1 up-regulators targeting LXR beta. Overall, QSAR modeling and docking studies well accounted for the observed in vivo activities of ABCA1 affected by WDD.

Abstract
Background Variations within fat mass and obesity associated (FTO) gene had crosstalk with obesity risk in European and some Asian populations. This study was designed to investigate FTO rs9939609 association with metabolic syndrome (MetS) as well as biochemical parameters as plasma glucose, serum triacylglycerol (TAG), total cholesterol (TC) and transaminases enzymes in Arab female population from Egypt. Methods In order to achieve that, FTO gene rs9939609 (A < T) was genotyped using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assay in a total of 197 females which were enrolled in this study. Fasting levels of serum insulin, lipid profile and plasma glucose, in addition to liver transaminases were measured. The association between the genotype distribution and MetS risk was evaluated using Chi-square and logistic regression tests in a case-control design under different genetic models. Results The association of genotype distribution with MetS was significant (χ2 = 8.6/P = 0.014) with an increased odds ratio under dominant model (OR = 1.97, P = 0.029 and 95%C.I = 1.07–3.6) and recessive model (OR = 2.95, P = 0.017 and 95%C.I = 1.22–7.22). Moreover, (AA) subjects showed significant lower HDL-C levels (P = 0.009) when compared to (TT) ones. In addition, interestingly subjects with (AA) genotype have significantly higher ALT levels (P = 0.02) that remained significant after correction of major confounders as body mass index and serum triacylglycerols but not after conservative Bonferroni adjustment. Conclusions The present study shows for first time that FTO gene rs9939609 is genetic risk factor for metabolic syndrome in Egyptian population which may help in understanding the biology of this complex syndrome and highlighted that this association may be through HDL-C component. The association of this genetic polymorphism with ALT levels needs to be studied in other populations with larger sample size.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oligopinۚ (OP) is a quantified extract from French Maritime Pine bark (FMPB) with low molecular weight procyanidins. The cardioprotective effects of OP need to be tested in human clinical intervention trials with an appropriate design. PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of subchronic consumption of OP on cardiovascular disease risk factors such as lipid profile, systolic blood pressure (BP) and oxidized-Low Density Lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in stage-1-hypertensive subjects. METHODS Between February 14 and May 31, 2014, eligible subjects were recruited from the outpatient clinics of Hospital Universitari Sant Joan (Reus, Spain). A total of 24 participants (mean age ± DS; 57.36 ± 11.25; 17 men) with stage-1-hypertension who were not receiving BP-lowering medication and LDL cholesterol < 4.88 mmol/l were randomized in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study. The subjects received 2 capsules/day with 75 mg of OP or placebo for 5-weeks. RESULTS At 5-weeks, compared to the placebo, OP raised High Density Lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) by 14.06% (p = 0.012) and apolipoprotein A-1 by 8.12% (p = 0.038) and reduced the ratio of apolipoprotein B-100/A-1 by 10.26% (p = 0.046). Moreover, at 5-weeks, compared to the baseline, OP reduced the systolic BP by 6.36 mmHg (p = 0.014), and decreased ox-LDL concentrations by 31.72 U/l (p = 0.015). CONCLUSION At 5-weeks, the consumption of 150 mg/day of OP improve lipid cardiovascular profile and represents one of the scarce ways to increase HDL-c in stage-1-hypertensive subjects. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) exposure on levels of serum lipids in workers of an electric power plant. A cross-sectional study was carried out in an electric power plant in Zhejiang province, China, from August to September 2011. All participants were divided into two groups with high occupational EMF exposure and low occupational EMF exposure. The occupational EMF exposure included radiofrequency EMF and extremely low-frequency EMF. Occupational EMF exposure was associated with an increased level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c; β = 0.17 mmol/L, P = 0.022). High EMF exposure group with longer employment duration, longer daily EMF exposure duration, and more mobile phone or electric fee per month had significantly higher levels of total cholesterol, LDL-c, or triglyceride than the corresponding reference group. However, significantly decreased level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was only observed in high EMF exposure group with more mobile phone fee per month. Similar results were also found in 544 participants with available data of serum lipids in 2010. The findings showed that chronic EMF exposure was associated with the change of serum lipid levels. EMF exposure might modulate the process of lipid metabolism.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The dried succulent stem of Cistanche tubulosa (Schenk) R. Wight is one component of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions for diabetes. However, there have been no modern scientific reports to confirm this traditional claim for the Cistanche species until now. Thus, we investigated the effects of Cistanche tubulosa on glucose homeostasis and serum lipids in male BKS.Cg-Dock7(m) +/+ Lepr(db)/J (db/db) mice, a model of type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The verbascoside and echinacoside contents of Cistanche tubulosa powder were evaluated using HPLC. The total phenolic content, polysaccharide content and antioxidant activity of Cistanche tubulosa powder were also evaluated. Then, different doses of Cistanche tubulosa (equivalent to 120.9, 72.6 or 24.2mg verbascoside/kg) were administered orally once daily for 45 days to male db/db mice. Age matched db/+ mice were used as normal controls. Body weight, fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose and insulin tolerance test were measured during the experiment. At the time of sacrifice, blood was collected for measurement of insulin level, the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-c, LDL-c and VLDL-c levels; liver and muscle were harvested for measurement of glycogen levels. RESULTS Cistanche tubulosa significantly suppressed the elevated fasting blood glucose and postprandial blood glucose levels, improved insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, and suppressed body weight loss in db/db mice. However, Cistanche tubulosa did not significantly affect serum insulin levels or hepatic and muscle glycogen levels. CONCLUSION This study provides scientific evidence for the traditional use of Cistanche tubulosa to treat diabetes, suggesting that Cistanche tubulosa has the potential for development into a functional food ingredient or drug to prevent hyperglycemia and treat hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the major cause of morbidity among diabetic patients. Thus, antidiabetic drugs with protection potential in the kidneys would have a higher therapeutic value. The effects of a novel proteoglycan, named FYGL, isolated from G. lucidum fruiting bodies, on the kidney function were investigated systematically in present work. FYGL (250 mg/kg) not only dosedependently reduced the blood glucose concentration (23.5%, p<0.05), kidney/body weight ratio (23.6%, p<0.01), serum creatinine (33.1%, p<0.01), urea nitrogen (24.1%, p<0.01),urea acid contents (35.9%, p<0.01) and albuminuria (30.7%, p<0.01)of DN mice compared to the untreated DN mice but also increased the renal superoxide dismutase (75.3%, p<0.01), glutathione peroxidase (35.0%, p<0.01) and catalase activities (58.5%, p<0.01) compared to the untreated DN mice. The decreasing of renal malondialdehyde content (34.3%, p<0.01) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine expression (2.5-fold, p<0.01) were also observed in FYGL-treated DN mice compared to the untreated DN mice, along with an amelioration of renal morphologic abnormalities. We conclude that FYGL confers protection against the renal functional and morphologic injuries by increasing activities of antioxidants and inhibiting accumulation of oxidation, suggesting a potential nutritional supplement for the prevention and therapy of DN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The content of resveratrol is relatively high in Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc., and the resveratrol has the effect of blood vessel dilating, microcirculation improving, platelet aggregation inhibiting and anti-cancer. The objective of this paper was to study the effect of resveratrol on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemia mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Through the establishment of an experimental mouse model of hyperlipidemia, the effect of resveratrol on change in total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels in mouse serum were determined. RESULTS Resveratrol group can apparently reduce TC, TG, LDL-c and AI of hyperlipidemic mice in a dose effect manner. CONCLUSION We concluded that resveratrol can effectively reduce blood lipid levels of hyperlipidemic mice.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have reported an inverse association between dairy product consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors in adults, but this relation is relatively unexplored in adolescents. We hypothesized that a higher dairy product intake is associated with lower cardiometabolic risk factor clustering in adolescents. To test this hypothesis, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 494 adolescents aged 15 to 18 years from the Azorean Archipelago, Portugal. We measured fasting glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, body fat, and cardiorespiratory fitness. We also calculated homeostatic model assessment and total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio. For each one of these variables, a z score was computed using age and sex. A cardiometabolic risk score (CMRS) was constructed by summing up the z scores of all individual risk factors. High risk was considered to exist when an individual had at least 1 SD from this score. Diet was evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire, and the intake of total dairy (included milk, yogurt, and cheese), milk, yogurt, and cheese was categorized as low (equal to or below the median of the total sample) or "appropriate" (above the median of the total sample).The association between dairy product intake and CMRS was evaluated using separate logistic regression, and the results were adjusted for confounders. Adolescents with high milk intake had lower CMRS, compared with those with low intake (10.6% vs 18.1%, P = .018). Adolescents with appropriate milk intake were less likely to have high CMRS than those with low milk intake (odds ratio, 0.531; 95% confidence interval, 0.302-0.931). No association was found between CMRS and total dairy, yogurt, and cheese intake. Only milk intake seems to be inversely related to CMRS in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Waist circumference (WC) is highly associated with metabolic risk factor clusters (RFC) for chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In this study, we evaluated the use of WC measurements to detect hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in children and adolescents using the WC cutoff points reported in the Bogalusa Heart study and the New Zealand study. DESIGN AND METHODS Students (n=1011; aged 6 to 14years) were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Anthropometric indices, fasting glucose, and lipid profiles were measured. The associations between WC measures and serum parameters were investigated by logistic regression models, and the clinical accuracy of the studied parameters was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of increased WC was 30.2% using the New Zealand cutoff points and 13.7% using the Bogalusa cutoff values. In general, children with increased WC exhibited higher concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and non-HDL-cholesterol and lower levels of HDL-cholesterol. The areas under the ROC curves (AUC) of the WC measurements were 0.770 (95% CI: 0.744-0.797) and 0.600 (95% CI: 0.569-0.631) using, respectively, the New Zealand and Bogalusa cutoff points for WC, indicating the prediction of simultaneous hyperglycemia, increased levels of non-HDL-cholesterol, and reduced HDL-cholesterol for students with increased WC. There was a significant difference between AUC values (P=0.001). Furthermore, the sensitivity of using WC for detecting RFC in students was 2.0 to 2.5-fold higher with the New Zealand study cutoff values for WC than with those from the Bogalusa study. Logistic regression analysis revealed that increased WC was associated with simultaneous hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia after controlling for differences in sex and age (P<0.01 for all). CONCLUSIONS Children and adolescents exhibited a high prevalence of increased WC associated with other RFCs for NCDs. Increased WC may be used to screen and identify students with elevated clusters of metabolic risk factors for NCDs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ankle-brachial index (ABI) screening is recommended for the detection of asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in at-risk populations, including diabetics. A low ABI identifies obstructive lower extremity vascular disease and predicts CVD events and increased mortality. A high ABI represents non-compressible arterial disease (NCAD), and is also associated with increased mortality and vascular events. Our objective is to investigate whether low and high ABI have distinct patterns of association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis in individuals with type-II diabetes mellitus. METHODS The Penn Diabetes Heart Study (PDHS) is a prospective observational cohort of diabetic individuals without clinically evident CVD. Multivariate logistic and Tobit linear regression were used to compare CVD risk factors and coronary artery (CAC) among 1863 subjects with PAD (ABI ≤ 0.9), NCAD (ABI ≥ 1.4 or non-compressible) or normal ABI (0.91-1.39). RESULTS Compared to those with normal ABI, PAD was associated with smoking, obesity, and lower HDL-c; while diabetes duration and reduced renal function were associated with NCAD. Both PAD and NCAD were independently associated with increased CAC compared to those with normal ABI, and these relationships were not attenuated in multiply adjusted models. CONCLUSION NCAD bears a distinct relationship to traditional CVD risk factors among diabetics, though like PAD is independently associated with increased CAC. These findings support the recognition of NCAD as a high-risk phenotype and provide additional relevance to ABI screening in diabetics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS A genome-wide association study associated 5 genetic variants with hepatic steatosis (identified by computerized tomography) in individuals of European ancestry. We investigated whether these variants were associated with measures of hepatic steatosis (HS) in non-Hispanic white (NHW), non-Hispanic black, and Mexican American (MA) participants in the US population-based National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, phase 2. METHODS We analyzed data from 4804 adults (1825 NHW, 1442 non-Hispanic black, and 1537 MA; 51.7% women; mean age at examination, 42.5 y); the weighted prevalence of HS was 37.3%. We investigated whether ultrasound-measured HS, with and without increased levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), or level of ALT alone, was associated with rs738409 (patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 [PNPLA3]), rs2228603 (neurocan [NCAN]), rs12137855 (lysophospholipase-like 1), rs780094 (glucokinase regulatory protein [GCKR]), and rs4240624 (protein phosphatase 1, regulatory subunit 3b [PPP1R3B]) using regression modeling in an additive genetic model, controlling for age, age-squared, sex, and alcohol consumption. RESULTS The G allele of rs738409 (PNPLA3) and the T allele of rs780094 (GCKR) were associated with HS with a high level of ALT (odds ratio [OR], 1.36; P = .01; and OR, 1.30; P = .03, respectively). The A allele of rs4240624 (PPP1R3B) and the T allele of rs2228603 (NCAN) were associated with HS (OR, 1.28; P = .03; and OR, 1.40; P = .04, respectively). Variants of PNPLA3 and NCAN were associated with ALT level among all 3 ancestries. Some single-nucleotide polymorphisms were associated with particular races or ethnicities: variants in PNPLA3, NCAN, GCKR, and PPP1R3B were associated with NHW and variants in PNPLA3 were associated with MA. No variants were associated with NHB. CONCLUSIONS We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III to validate the association between rs738409 (PNPLA3), rs780094 (GCKR), and rs4240624 (PPP1R3B) with HS, with or without increased levels of ALT, among 3 different ancestries. Some, but not all, associations between variants in NCAN, lysophospholipase-like 1, GCKR, and PPP1R3B with HS (with and without increased ALT level) were significant within subpopulations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increasing omega-3 fatty acid (FA) intake, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is associated with numerous health benefits; however, the benefits on inflammation appear to vary depending on the study population examined. While improvements in inflammatory status have been reported in the elderly, there is less evidence regarding the effects of fish oil supplementation on inflammation in young adults. The goal of the present study was to examine the influence of fish oil supplementation on lipid metabolites and the inflammatory status of young healthy men. MATERIALS/METHODS Fasted serum samples were collected from 10 young healthy males (23.4 ± 1.7 years) before and after a 3-month supplementation of fish-oil containing 2.0g EPA and 1.0g DHA. Samples were analyzed to investigate changes in FA profiles, bioclinical parameters (e.g. triglyceride and hs-CRP), and a panel of 26 eicosanoids. Paired t-tests were used to evaluate changes between the time points. RESULTS Serum triglycerides decreased (P=0.0006) while the proportion of HDL-c (relative to total cholesterol) increased significantly (P=0.0495) after fish oil supplementation. Specific monounsaturated and polyunsaturated FA levels were changed following supplementation, including reductions in palmitoleic and oleic acid, and, as expected, increases in EPA and DHA. We also observed increases in eicosanoids, namely prostaglandin-F2α (P<0.0001) and thromboxane-B2 (P=0.0296), after fish oil supplementation. CONCLUSIONS A 3-month fish oil supplementation in young healthy men improved circulating triglyceride levels and the HDL-c ratio while, concomitantly, increasing the concentrations of two eicosanoids (prostaglandin-F2α and thromboxane-B2). This suggests that fish oil supplementation does have significant benefits in young healthy adults and that specific omega-6-derived eicosanoids can help to further our understanding regarding the beneficial link between omega-3 FA and inflammation.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the impact of physical fitness (PF) on the association between fasting serum triglycerides (FTG) and diabetes risk and whether temporal changes in FTG predict diabetes risk in healthy middle-aged men. METHODS FTG and PF (bicycle exercise test) were measured in 1962 men aged 40-59 years in 1972-1975 (Survey 1) and repeated in 1387 still healthy men on average 7.3 years later (Survey 2). Diabetes was diagnosed according to WHO 1985-criteria. RESULTS During 35 years follow-up 202/1962 (10.3%) men developed diabetes. Compared with the lowest, the upper FTG tertile had a 2.58-fold (95% CI: 1.81-3.74) diabetes risk adjusted for age, fasting blood glucose and maternal diabetes, and a 2.29-fold (95%CI: 1.60-3.33) when also adjusting for PF. Compared with unchanged (±25%) FTG levels (n=664), FTG reduction of more than 25% (n=261) was associated with 56% lower (0.44; 95% CI: 0.24-0.75) diabetes risk, while FTG increase of more than 25% (n=462) was associated with similar risk. These associations were unchanged when adjusted for PF and PF change. CONCLUSIONS High FTG-levels predicted long-term diabetes risk in healthy middle-aged men, and the association was only modestly weakened when adjusted for PF. A reduction in FTG was associated with decreased diabetes risk.

Abstract
Jiao-Tai-Wan (JTW), a classical Chinese prescription, has been clinically employed to treat diabetes mellitus in recent years. To investigate the comparative evaluations on anti-diabetic effects and pharmacokinetics of the active ingredient berberine in mice treated with JTW in various combinations of its constituent herbs. In our study, the anti-diabetic study was carried out in diabetic mice induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. The diabetic mice were randomly assigned to three therapy groups and orally administered with different prescription proportions of Rhizoma Coptidis and Cinnamomum cassia respectively. The level of plasma glucose, lipid profile and parameters related to oxidative stress were determined. The concentrations of berberine in non-diabetic mice plasma were determined using HPLC, and main pharmacokinetic parameters were investigated. The results indicated that the compatibility effects of ingredients present in Cinnamomum cassia could affect the anti-diabetic ability and pharmacokinetics of berberine in JTW.

Abstract
We found that cluster determinant 36 (CD36) gene is up-regulated in essential hypertension (EH) patients in our former research, but the association between CD36 gene variations and EH has not yet been clearly demonstrated. The relationship between CD36 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and EH in the northeastern Han Chinese was examined in the present study through direct sequencing and genotype-detection. A total of 589 unrelated northeastern Han Chinese including 276 with EH and 313 controls were studied. SNPs in exon 7, exon 13 and intron 4 were detected using PCR-sequencing. The genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) or polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP). +216T/C, +273A/G, +132C/T, +217T/C, +212T/G and +233T/C polymorphisms were identified. Distributions of genotypes AA, GA and GG of +273A/G polymorphism were significantly different between EH group and the control group (χ2: 9.056, p=0.011) and G allelic frequency was higher in EH (p=0.006, OR=1.629, 95% CI [1.224-2.168]). Logistic regression analysis showed that +273A/G polymorphism was closely associated with blood pressure (BP) after adjusting for ages. When subclassified by sex, the genotype distribution of +273A/G (p=0.011) and allelic frequency of G allele (p=0.006) were significantly different between EH participants and controls in males, but not in females. Subgroup analysis performed by body mass index (BMI) suggested that the genotype distribution of +273A/G and allelic frequency were significantly different in non-obese group and non-obese men, but the associations were not significant (non-obese group: p=0.016, OR=1.664, 95% CI [1.459-2.409]; non-obese men: p=0.073, OR=1.898, 95% CI [1.033-3.487]). +273A/G polymorphism in CD36 gene was associated with EH, and +273G could be an independent predictor.

Abstract
Crocin is the only water soluble carotenoid in nature, and it has a known powerful antioxidant activity. The aim of this work was to investigate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of crocin in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetic rats. Neonatal male Wistar rats (2-5 days old) were randomly divided into five groups. Three groups were intraperitoneally injected with STZ (90 mg/kg body weight). Among them, two groups were treated with intraperitoneal injection of crocin (50 or 100 mg/kg), and the third group was treated with vehicle only. Two control groups were also considered, and one of them was treated with crocin. After 5 months, their blood and urine samples were collected, and the animals were sacrified. The results indicate a significant lower body weight (P < 0.001) and abnormal parameters in the diabetic rats compared with the normal group. An administration of both doses of crocin significantly decreased the levels of serum glucose, advanced glycation end products, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein and increased the high-density lipoprotein in the diabetic rats. The treatments were also effective in decreasing HbA1c and microalbuminuria, as well as homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance as a measure of insulin resistance in the diabetic rats.
