Loading rutin on surfaces by the layer-by-layer assembly technique to improve the oxidation resistance and osteogenesis of titanium implants in osteoporotic rats

The purpose of this study was to construct a rutin-controlled release system on the surface of Ti substrates and investigate its effects on osteogenesis and osseointegration on the surface of implants. The base layer, polyethylenimine (PEI), was immobilized on a titanium substrate. Then, hyaluronic acid (HA)/chitosan (CS)-rutin (RT) multilayer films were assembled on the PEI using layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technology. We used scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and contact angle measurements to examine all Ti samples. The drug release test of rutin was also carried out to detect the slow-release performance. The osteogenic abilities of the samples were evaluated by experiments on an osteoporosis rat model and MC3T3-E1 cells. The results (SEM, FTIR and contact angle measurements) all confirmed that the PEI substrate layer and HA/CS-RT multilayer film were effectively immobilized on titanium. The drug release test revealed that a rutin controlled release mechanism had been successfully established. Furthermore, the in vitro data revealed that osteoblasts on the coated titanium matrix had greater adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation capacity than the osteoblasts on the pure titanium surface. When MC3T3-E1 cells were exposed to H2O2-induced oxidative stress in vitro, cell-based tests revealed great tolerance and increased osteogenic potential on HA/CS-RT substrates. We also found that the HA/CS-RT coating significantly increased the new bone mass around the implant. The LBL-deposited HA/CS-RT multilayer coating on the titanium base surface established an excellent rutin-controlled release system, which significantly improved osseointegration and promoted osteogenesis under oxidative stress conditions, suggesting a new implant therapy strategy for patients with osteoporosis. .

Preparation and Characterization of Fish Oil Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Resveratrol-Loaded Gliadin/Chitin Nanocrystal Composite Nanoparticles

Unsaturated fatty acids present in fish oil offer various physiological benefits to the human body. However, their susceptibility to oxidation severely limits their potential applications. The purpose of this study was to develop Pickering emulsions stabilized from a composite of resveratrol-loaded gliadin nanoparticles and oxidized chitin nanocrystals (GR/OC) to protect fish oil from oxidation. The effects of the GR/OC composite on the characterizations of fish oil Pickering emulsions were investigated, including the microstructure, physicochemical properties (stability and rheological behavior), and digestion properties in vitro. The results revealed that an increased concentration of the GR/OC composite significantly reduced the droplet size and improved the ambient stability of the emulsions (in terms of pH, ionic strength, temperature, and storage time). Confocal laser scanning microscopy images depicted that the GR/OC nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed at the interface between water and fish oil (W-O interface). This distribution formed a protective envelope around the droplets. Remarkably, the addition of 2% GR/OC nanoparticles stabilized the Pickering emulsions and showed the most positive effect on the antioxidant capacity compared to that of the control group. These stabilized emulsions maintained lower peroxide values and acid values, which were 1.5 times less than those of the blank control during the 14 day accelerated oxidation experiment. Furthermore, the Pickering emulsions stabilized by GR/OC nanoparticles exhibited the ability to protect fish oil from contamination by gastric juices and facilitate the intestinal absorption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The findings suggest that these GR/OC-stabilized Pickering emulsions offer a promising alternative for delivering fish oils in various industries, including the food industry.

Exploring the Influence of Nanocrystalline Structure and Aluminum Content on High-Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Fe-Cr-Al Alloys

The present study examines the high-temperature (500-800 °C) oxidation behavior of Fe-10Cr-(3,5) Al alloys and studies the effect of nanocrystalline structure and Al content on their resistance to oxidation. The nanocrystalline (NC) alloy powder was synthesized via planetary ball milling. The prepared NC alloy powder was consolidated using spark plasma sintering to form NC alloys. Subsequently, an annealing of the NC alloys was performed to transform them into microcrystalline (MC) alloys. It was observed that the NC alloys exhibit superior resistance to oxidation compared to their MC counterparts at high temperatures. The superior resistance to oxidation of the NC alloys is attributed to their considerably finer grain size, which enhances the diffusion of those elements to the metal-oxide interface that forms the protective oxide layer. Conversely, the coarser grain size in MC alloys limits the diffusion of the oxide-forming components. Furthermore, the Fe-10Cr-5Al alloy showed greater resistance to oxidation than the Fe-10Cr-3Al alloy.

Effect of tremella polysaccharides on the quality of collagen jelly: insight into the improvement of the gel properties and the antioxidant activity of yak skin gelatin

BACKGROUND

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of tremella polysaccharides on the gel properties and antioxidant activity of yak skin gelatin with a view to improving the quality of collagen jellies. The preparation of composite gels were performed by yak skin gelatin (66.7 mg mL-1) and tremella polysaccharides with different concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 mg mL-1), and finally the collagen jelly was prepared by composite gel (yak skin gelatin: 66.7 mg mL-1; tremella polysaccharides:6 mg mL-1) with the best performance.

RESULTS

Tremella polysaccharides not only improved the hardness, springiness, gel strength, water holding capacity and melting temperature of yak skin gelatin, but also enhanced the composite gel's scavenging activity against ABTS radicals, DPPH radicals, O2 and OH radicals. The filling of tremella polysaccharides into the gelatin network increased the number of crosslinking sites inside the gel, which resulted in the gel network structure becoming dense and orderly. The gel particles became finer and more uniform, and the thermal stability was improved. Furthermore, the sensory score of commercially available gelatin jelly decreased more rapidly during storage compared to the composite gel jelly.

CONCLUSION

The gel properties and antioxidant activity of yak skin gelatin were improved by adding tremella polysaccharides, and then the quality and storage properties of the jelly were improved, which also provided technical reference for the development of functional gel food. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The Roles of Impurities and Surface Area on Thermal Stability and Oxidation Resistance of BN Nanoplatelets

This study considers the influence of purity and surface area on the thermal and oxidation properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoplatelets, which represent crucial factors in high-temperature oxidizing environments. Three h-BN nanoplatelet-based materials, synthesized with different purity levels and surface areas (~3, ~56, and ~140 m2/g), were compared, including a commercial BN reference. All materials were systematically analyzed by various characterization techniques, including gas pycnometry, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared radiation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, gas sorption analysis, and thermal gravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry. Results indicated that the thermal stability and oxidation resistance of the synthesized materials were improved by up to ~13.5% (or by 120 °C) with an increase in purity. Furthermore, the reference material with its high purity and low surface area (~4 m2/g) showed superior performance, which was attributed to the minimized reactive sites for oxygen diffusion due to lower surface area availability and fewer possible defects, highlighting the critical roles of both sample purity and accessible surface area in h-BN thermo-oxidative stability. These findings highlight the importance of focusing on purity and surface area control in developing BN-based nanomaterials, offering a path to enhance their performance in extreme thermal and oxidative conditions.

Physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying the role of anthocyanin in acquired tolerance to salt stress in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Anthocyanin is an important pigment that prevents oxidative stress and mediates adaptation of plants to salt stress. Peanuts with dark red and black testa are rich in anthocyanin. However, correlation between salt tolerance and anthocyanin content in black and dark red testa peanuts is unknown. In this study, three peanut cultivars namely YZ9102 (pink testa), JHR1 (red testa) and JHB1 (black testa) were subjected to sodium chloride (NaCl) stress. The plant growth, ion uptake, anthocyanin accumulation, oxidation resistance and photosynthetic traits were comparatively analyzed. We observed that the plant height, leaf area and biomass under salt stress was highly inhibited in pink color testa (YZ9102) as compare to black color testa (JHB1). JHB1, a black testa colored peanut was identified as the most salt-tolerance cultivar, followed by red (JHR1) and pink(YZ9102). During salt stress, JHB1 exhibited significantly higher levels of anthocyanin and flavonoid accumulation compared to JHR1 and YZ9102, along with increased relative activities of antioxidant protection and photosynthetic efficiency. However, the K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ were consistently decreased among three cultivars under salt stress, suggesting that the salt tolerance of black testa peanut may not be related to ion absorption. Therefore, we predicted that salt tolerance of JHB1 may be attributed to the accumulation of the anthocyanin and flavonoids, which activated antioxidant protection against the oxidative damage to maintain the higher photosynthetic efficiency and plant growth. These findings will be useful for improving salt tolerance of peanuts.

An 8-week ketogenic diet improves exercise endurance and liver antioxidant capacity after weight loss in obese mice

Evolving evidence supports the role of the ketogenic diet (KD) in weight loss. However, no coherent conclusions are drawn on its impact on the effect of KD on exercise and antioxidant capacity after weight loss in obese individuals. We evaluated the exercise performance, energy metabolism and antioxidant capacity of mice after weight loss using high-fat diet-induced obese mice, and used KD and normal diet (ND) intervention, respectively, to provide a theoretical basis for further study of the health effects of KD. Our results showed that the 8-week KD significantly reduced the body weight of obese mice and improved the performance of treadmill exercise, but had no significant effect on grip strength. Serum biochemical results suggest that KD has the risk of elevating blood lipid. In liver tissue, KD significantly reduced the level of oxidative stress and increased the antioxidant capacity of the liver. Our findings suggest that the intervention with KD led to weight loss, modulate energy metabolism and improve aerobic exercise endurance in obese mice. Despite its antioxidant potential in the liver, the utilization of KD still requires caution. This study underscores the need for further investigation into the health impacts of KD, especially in regard to its potential risks.

Rational Design of a Core-Shelled Ti3AlC2@La2Zr2O7 Composite for High-Temperature Broadband Microwave Absorption

Microwave-absorbing materials adapting to high temperatures and harsh environments are in great demand. Herein, a core-shelled Ti3AlC2@La2Zr2O7 (TAC@LZO) composite was designed and fabricated by encapsulating the La2Zr2O7 (LZO) thermal insulation ceramic on the surface of highly conductive Ti3AlC2 (TAC) via chemical coprecipitation and subsequent heat treatment. The continuous LZO ceramic coating on the surface improved the oxidation resistance of the composite at 600 °C and modulated its dielectric properties. The TAC@LZO composite exhibited an excellent microwave absorption performance within the temperature range of 25-600 °C, minimum reflection loss (RLmin) < -55 dB, and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < -10 dB) of 4 GHz. This work presents an effective approach for developing stable high-temperature microwave absorbers from thermal insulation ceramics.

Synthesis of Imidazole-Compound-Coated Copper Nanoparticles with Promising Antioxidant and Sintering Properties

In this study, we present a facile method for preparing oxidation-resistant Cu nanoparticles through a liquid-phase reduction with imidazole compounds (imidazole, 2-methylimidazole, 2-phenylimidazole, and benzimidazole) that serve as protective and dispersing agents. Through a complexation reaction between Cu atoms, the imidazole compounds can form a protective film on the Cu nanoparticles to prevent the particles from rapidly oxidizing. We compared the effects of the four kinds of imidazole compounds on the oxidation resistance and sintering properties of Cu particles. The Cu particles prepared with benzimidazole could be stored in the air for 30 days without being oxidized. After sintering at 300 °C and 2 MPa, the joint of the particles could reach a shear strength of 32 MPa, which meets the requirements for microelectronic packaging.

Research Progress of ODS FeCrAl Alloys-A Review of Composition Design

After the Fukushima nuclear accident, the development of new accident-tolerant fuel cladding materials has become a research hotspot around the world. Due to its outstanding corrosion resistance, radiation resistance, and creep properties at elevated temperatures, the oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl alloy, as one of the most promising candidate materials for accident-tolerant fuel cladding, has been extensively studied during the past decade. Recent research on chemical composition design as well as its effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties has been reviewed in this paper. In particular, the reasonable/optimized content of Cr is explained from the aspects of oxidation resistance, radiation resistance, and thermal stability. The essential role of the Al element in oxidation resistance, high-temperature stability, and workability was reviewed in detail. The roles of oxide-forming elements, i.e., Y (Y2O3), Ti, and Zr, and the solid solution strengthening element, i.e., W, were discussed. Additionally, their reasonable contents were summarized. Typical types of oxide, i.e., Y-Ti-O, Y-Al-O, and Y-Zr-O, and their formation mechanisms were also discussed in this paper. All aspects mentioned above provide an important reference for understanding the effects of composition design parameters on the properties of nuclear-level ODS FeCrAl alloy.

A Novel 1000 MPa Grade Ultrafine-Grained Dual-Phase Press Hardening Steel with Superior Oxidation Resistance and High Ductility

1000 MPa grade low-carbon martensite press hardening steels (PHS) are widely used in energy-absorbing domains of automotive parts, such as the bottom of a B-pillar. To prevent oxide scale formation during hot forming, this PHS is often required to be protected by an additional Al-Si coating. In addition, although the low carbon martensitic microstructure grants it excellent bending toughness, the ductility tends to be limited. In this study, a novel 1000 MPa grade ultrafine-grained (UFG) martensite-ferrite (F-M) dual-phase (DP) PHS with superior oxidation resistance was designed using tailored additions of Cr, Mn, and Si, and refining the initial microstructure. Only 0.55 ± 0.18 μm thick oxide film is formed in the designed steel during austenitizing heating and stamping, which is significantly lower than the 24.6 ± 3.1 μm thick oxide film formed in conventional 1000 MPa grade low-carbon martensite PHS under the identical condition. The superior oxidation resistance of designed steel can be attributed to the rapid formation of the protective Si-rich, Cr-rich, and Mn-rich oxide layers during annealing. Moreover, due to the presence of ferrite and ultrafine microstructure, the designed steel also shows a significant improvement in ductility from 8.5% to 16.8% without sacrificing strength and bending toughness compared with conventional 1000 MPa grade low-carbon martensite PHS.

Fabrication and Oxidation Resistance of a Novel MoSi2-ZrB2-Based Coating on Mo-Based Alloy

To enhance the oxidation resistance of Mo-based TZM alloy (Mo-0.5Ti-0.1Zr-0.02C, wt%), a novel MoSi2-ZrB2 composite coating was applied on the TZM substrate by a two-step process comprising the in situ reaction of Mo, Zr, and B4C to form a ZrB2-MoB pre-layer followed by pack siliconizing. The as-packed coating was composed of a multi-layer structure, consisting of a MoB diffusion layer, an MoSi2-ZrB2 inner layer, and an outer layer of mixture of MoSi2 and Al2O3. The composite coating could provide excellent oxidation-resistant protection for the TZM alloy at 1600 °C. The oxidation kinetic curve of the composite coating followed the parabolic rule, and the weight gain of the coated sample after 20 h of oxidation at 1600 °C was only 5.24 mg/cm2. During oxidation, a dense and continuous SiO2-baed oxide scale embedded with ZrO2 and ZrSiO4 particles showing high thermal stability and low oxygen permeability could be formed on the surface of the coating by oxidation of MoSi2 and ZrB2, which could hinder the inward diffusion of oxygen at high temperatures. Concurrently, the MoB inner diffusion layer played an important role in hindering the diffusion of Si inward with regard to the TZM alloy and could retard the degradation of MoSi2, which could also improve the long life of the coating.

Review of Research Progress on Mo-Si-B Alloys

Mo-Si-B alloys are a crucial focus for the development of the next generation of ultra-high-temperature structural materials. They have garnered significant attention over the past few decades due to their high melting point and superior strength and oxidation resistance compared to other refractory metal alloys. However, their low fracture toughness at room temperature and poor oxidation resistance at medium temperature are significant barriers limiting the processing and application of Mo-Si-B alloys. Therefore, this review was carried out to compare the effectiveness of doped metallic elements and second-phase particles in solving these problems in detail, in order to provide clear approaches to future research work on Mo-Si-B alloys. It was found that metal doping can enhance the properties of the alloys in several ways. However, their impact on oxidation resistance and fracture toughness at room temperature is limited. Apart from B-rich particles, which significantly improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance of the alloy, the doping of second-phase particles primarily enhances the mechanical properties of the alloys. Additionally, the application of additive manufacturing to Mo-Si-B alloys was discussed, with the observation of high crack density in the alloys prepared using this method. As a result, we suggest a future research direction and the preparation process of oscillatory sintering, which is expected to reduce the porosity of Mo-Si-B alloys, thereby addressing the noted issues.

Effect of Zr2Al4C5 Content on the Mechanical Properties and Oxidation Behavior of ZrB2-SiC-Zr2Al4C5 Ceramics

ZrB₂-SiC-Zr₂Al₄C₅ multi-phase ceramics with uniform structure and high density were successfully prepared through the introduction of in situ synthesized Zr₂Al₄C₅ into ZrB₂-SiC ceramic via SPS at 1800 °C. A systematic analysis and discussion of the experimental results and proposed mechanisms were carried out to demonstrate the composition-dependent sintering properties, mechanical properties and oxidation behavior. The results showed that the in situ synthesized Zr₂Al₄C₅ could be evenly distributed in the ZrB₂-SiC ceramic matrix and inhibited the growth of ZrB₂ grains, which played a positive role in the sintering densification of the composite ceramics. With increasing Zr₂Al₄C₅ content, the Vickers hardness and Young's modulus of composite ceramics gradually decreased. The fracture toughness showed a trend that first increased and then decreased, and was increased by about 30% compared with ZrB₂-SiC ceramics. The major phases resulting from the oxidation of samples were ZrO₂, ZrSiO₄, aluminosilicate and SiO₂ glass. With increasing Zr₂Al₄C₅ content, the oxidative weight showed a trend that first increased then decreased; the composite ceramic with 30 vol.% Zr₂Al₄C₅ showed the smallest oxidative weight gain. We believe that the presence of Zr₂Al₄C₅ results in the formation of Al₂O₃ during the oxidation process, subsequently resulting in a lowering of the viscosity of the glassy silica scale, which in turn intensifies the oxidation of the composite ceramics. This would also increase oxygen permeation through the scale, adversely affecting the oxidation resistance of the composites with high Zr₂Al₄C₅ content.

Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Oxidation Resistance of Nb-Si Based Ultrahigh-Temperature Alloys Prepared by Hot Press Sintering

Nb-Si based ultrahigh-temperature alloys with the composition of Nb-22Ti-15Si-5Cr-3Al (atomic percentage, at. %) were prepared by hot press sintering (HPS) at 1250, 1350, 1400, 1450 and 1500 °C. The effects of HPS temperatures on the microstructure, room temperature fracture toughness, hardness and isothermal oxidation behavior of the alloys were investigated. The results showed that the microstructures of the alloys prepared by HPS at different temperatures were composed of Nbss, βTiss and γ(Nb,X)₅Si₃ phases. When the HPS temperature was 1450 °C, the microstructure was fine and nearly equiaxed. When the HPS temperature was lower than 1450 °C, the supersaturated Nbss with insufficient diffusion reaction still existed. When the HPS temperature exceeded 1450 °C, the microstructure coarsened obviously. Both the room temperature fracture toughness and Vickers hardness of the alloys prepared by HPS at 1450 °C were the highest. The alloy prepared by HPS at 1450 °C exhibited the lowest mass gain upon oxidation at 1250 °C for 20 h. The oxide film was mainly composed of Nb₂O₅, TiNb₂O₇, TiO₂ and a small amount of amorphous silicate. The formation mechanism of oxide film is concluded as follows: TiO₂ forms by the preferential reaction of βTiss and O in the alloy; after that, a stable oxide film composed of TiO₂ and Nb₂O₅ forms; then, TiNb₂O₇ is formed by the reaction of TiO₂ and Nb₂O₅.

Improved Oxidation Resistance of Graphite Block by Introducing Curing Process of Phenolic Resin

The purpose of this study is to improve the oxidation resistance of graphite blocks after graphitization at 2800 °C by introducing a curing process of phenolic resin, used as a binder to control the pore size. Using the methylene index obtained from FTIR, the curing temperature was set to 150 °C, the temperature at which cross-linking most highly occurs. Graphite blocks that had undergone curing, and were carbonized with a slow heating rate, showed increased mechanical and electrical properties. Microstructural observation confirmed that the curing process inhibited the formation of large pores in the graphite block. Therefore, the cured graphite block showed better oxidation resistance in air than a non-cured graphite block. Oxidation of the graphite block was caused by pores created by pyrolysis of the phenolic resin binder, which acted as active sites.

Boron-Doped Activated Carbon Supports for Cobalt-Catalyzed Oxygen Evolution in Alkaline Electrolyte

Activated carbons (ACs) are the most widely used and attractive support materials for electrocatalytic applications because of their significant surface areas, high electrical conductivities, and moderate affinities toward supported metal catalysts. However, the corrosive behavior of ACs at oxidative potentials causes an inevitable reduction in the active surface area of supported catalysts, resulting in the continuous deterioration of their electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, the introduction of corrosion-resistant durable catalyst supports is essential for sustainable and efficient electrocatalysis. Here, we modified ACs to obtain different boron (B)-doped structures via doping-temperature controls to investigate the corrosion resistance of B-doped ACs. With increasing doping temperature, the B-doped ACs exhibited a decreased defect density and enhanced crystallinity owing to the accelerating dopant-induced graphitization. We found that the substitution of B atoms into the carbon lattice improved the structural integrity of the carbon structure, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests suggested that the highly B-substituted structures caused electrochemical surface passivation against carbon corrosion. Moreover, B-doped ACs significantly contributed to the increase in loading mass of cobalt (Co)-based catalyst on them and the electrochemical durability toward the oxygen evolution reaction as catalyst-support hybrid. The B22 (B-doped AC obtained at a 2200 °C B-doping temperature)-supported Co catalyst with the lowest oxidation current exhibited a voltage change of 32 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm² (ΔE_j=10) after 10,000 cycles, which was a factor of ∼7 higher cycle durability and stability than that of the conventional IrO₂ catalyst (ΔE_j=10 = 205 mV). Here, we propose that surface engineering by B-doping to improve the structural integrity of ACs is an attractive method for designing durable electrocatalytic support materials.

Effect of Cr on Microstructure and Properties of WVTaTiCrx Refractory High-Entropy Alloy Laser Cladding

WVTaTiCr_x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) refractory high-entropy alloy coatings were prepared on a 42-CrMo steel plate using laser cladding. The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of the Cr content on the microstructure and properties of the WVTaTiCr_x coating. The morphologies and phase compositions of five coatings with different Cr contents were comparatively observed. In addition, the hardness and high-temperature oxidation resistance of the coatings were also analyzed. As a result, with the increase in Cr, the coating grains were more refined. All the coating is mainly composed of the BCC solid-solution phase, which promotes the precipitation of the Laves phase with the increase in Cr. The addition of Cr greatly improves the hardness, high-temperature oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of the coating. The WVTaTiCr (Cr₁) exhibited superior mechanical properties, especially in terms of its exceptional hardness, high-temperature oxidation resistance and outstanding corrosion resistance. The average hardness of the WVTaTiCr alloy coating reaches 627.36 HV. After 50 h of high-temperature oxidation, the oxide weight of WVTaTiCr increases by 5.12 mg/cm², and the oxidation rate is 0.1 mg/(cm²·h). In 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the corrosion potential of WVTaTiCr is -0.3198 V, and the corrosion rate is 0.161 mm/a.

Optimization of Extraction Process and Dynamic Changes in Triterpenoids of Lactuca indica from Different Medicinal Parts and Growth Periods

In this study, the triterpenoids in the leaves of Lactuca indica L.cv. Mengzao (LIM) were extracted via microwave-assisted ethanol extraction, and the optimum extraction conditions for triterpenoids were determined through single-factor experiments and the Box-Behnken method. The effects of three factors (solid-liquid ratio, microwave power and extraction time) on the total triterpenoids content (TTC) were evaluated. The TTC of different parts (roots, stems, leaves and flowers) of LIM in different growth stages was studied, and the scavenging effects of the highest TTC parts on DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl free radicals were investigated. The results showed that the optimum extraction conditions for microwave-assisted extraction of total triterpenoids from LIM leaves were as follows: solid-liquid ratio of 1:20 g/mL; microwave power of 400 W; and extraction time of 60 min. Under these conditions, the TTC was 29.17 mg/g. Compared with the fresh raw materials, the TTC of the materials increased after freeze drying. The leaves of LIM had the highest TTC, and the flowering stage was the best time. The triterpenoids from the leaves had a strong ability to eliminate DPPH and ABTS free radicals, and the elimination effect of dried leaves was better than that of fresh leaves, while the elimination effect of hydroxyl free radicals was not obvious. The tested method was used to extract total triterpenoids from LIM using a simple process at low cost, which provides a reference for developing intensive processing methods for L. indica.

Microstructure and Properties of Ti(C,N)-Based Cermets with AlxCoCrFeNiTi Binder

Al_xCoCrFeNiTi (x = 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 1) powders were prepared via mechanical alloying and were used as binders for SPS-produced Ti(C,N)-based cermets. The effects of AlxCoCrFeNiTi binder on phase composition, morphology, room-temperature mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of cermets were studied. The research showed that cermets with Al_xCoCrFeNiTi binders exhibited a more homogeneous core-rim structure than cermets with cobalt binders. The Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of cermets with Al_xCoCrFeNiTi binders increased with the aluminum molar ratio due to the grain refinement and solid solution strengthening effect of carbonitrides. After static oxidation at 1000 °C, the mass gain of the cermets with Al_xCoCrFeNiTi binders changed according to a quasi-parabolic law, and the lowest mass gain was obtained in the cermet with Al_0.6CoCrFeNiTi binder. The oxidation kinetics curve of the benchmark cermet with cobalt followed a linear law. The oxidation product of Ti(C,N)-based cermet with cobalt was rich in TiO₂, and the Ti(C,N)-based cermets with Al_xCoCrFeNiTi binders were transformed into complex oxides, such as NiMoO₄, NiWO₄, FeMoO₄, Fe₃Ti₃O₉, and Ni₃TiO₇. The oxide layer on the cermet with Al_0.6CoCrFeNiTi appeared to be dense and protective, which inhibited the diffusion of oxygen into the cermet and improved the oxidation resistance of the final product.

Comparison of Antioxidant Capacity and Muscle Amino Acid and Fatty Acid Composition of Nervous and Calm Hu Sheep

This study determined the effect of temperament on antioxidant capacity and the relationship between antioxidant capacity and the contents of amino acids (AA) and fatty acids (FA) in muscle of Hu sheep. Organ and muscle samples of five calm and five nervous Hu sheep were collected to determine the antioxidant capacity and the contents of AA and FA in muscle tissue. The concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide excretion enzyme (SOD) in muscle and intestinal tissue of calm Hu sheep were lower than those of nervous Hu sheep (p < 0.01), and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in liver of calm Hu sheep was significantly higher than that of nervous Hu sheep (p = 0.050). The content of AA of calm Hu sheep was higher than that of nervous Hu sheep, especially the content of reductive amino acids, which was significantly higher than that of nervous Hu sheep (p = 0.029). Fatty acid content of nervous Hu sheep was higher than that of calm type, and saturated fatty acid content was significantly higher than that of calm type (p = 0.001). The SOD content in muscle tissue was positively correlated with the contents of aspartic acid (Asp), alanine (Ala) and lysine (Lys). Catalase (CAT) activity was positively correlated with Ala content. There was a significant positive correlation between total antioxidants (T-AOC) and glutamate (Glu) (p < 0.05). MDA concentration was positively correlated with lauric acid (C12:0), triseconic acid (C13:0), myristic acid (C14:0) content (p < 0.01), and ginkgo acid (C15:0) content. The total antioxidants (T-AOC) was negatively correlated with stearic acid (C18:0) (p < 0.05). Our conclusion is that the antioxidant capacity of calm Hu sheep is superior to that of nervous Hu sheep, which may be due to the higher AA (especially reductive amino acids (Arg, Lys, Ala and Glu)) content in the muscle and the lower FA (especially SFA) content, which improve the antioxidant capacity of the organism and allow for further exploration of the mechanisms by which animal temperament affects antioxidant performance.

Effects of Different Iron Supplements on Reproductive Performance and Antioxidant Capacity of Pregnant Sows as Well as Iron Content and Antioxidant Gene Expression in Newborn Piglets

To improve the reproductive performance of sows and the iron nutrition of newborn piglets, we studied the effects of dietary iron on reproductive performance in pregnant sows as well as antioxidant capacity and the visceral iron content of sows and newborn piglets. Forty pregnant sows were divided into four groups, the iron deficiency group (Id group) was fed a basic diet while sows in the treatment groups were fed diets supplemented with 200 mg/kg lactoferrin (LF group), 0.8% heme-iron (Heme-Fe group), or 500 mg/kg iron-glycine complex (Fe-Gly group). The results indicated that (1) different sources of iron had no significant effect on litter size, live litter size, and litter weight of sows; (2) the three additives improved iron nutrition in newborn piglets, with LF and Heme-Fe having better improvement effects; and (3) the addition of different iron sources improved the level of serum antioxidant biochemical indexes of sows and newborn piglets, and it can have an effect on gene level, among which lactoferrin has the best effect. Thus, adding LF, Heme-iron, or Fe-Gly to the diet of sows during the second and third trimester of gestation can improve the antioxidant capacity of the sows. The supplementation of LF in pregnant sow diets can also improve the antioxidant capacity and the iron nutrition of newborn piglets, with better additive effects than in Heme-Fe and Fe-Gly.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of W-Ta-B Coatings Deposited by High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS)

We present the deposition and characterization of tungsten-tantalum diboride (W,Ta)B₂ coatings prepared by the high-power impulse magnetron sputtering technique. We evaluated the influence of pulse duration and substrate bias on the properties of (W,Ta)B₂ films. A high hardness of up to 35 GPa measured by nanoindentation was simultaneously obtained with good elastic properties. Changing the pulse duration greatly affected the B/(W+Ta) atomic ratio, which influenced the properties of the coatings. The deposited films are thermally stable at up to 1000 °C in vacuum and are able to withstand oxidation at 500 °C.

Effects of dietary Chinese yam polysaccharide copper complex on growth performance, immunity, and antioxidant capacity of broilers

Chinese yam polysaccharide (CYP) has received attention in recent years owing to its positive nutritional and medicinal characteristics. Copper is an essential trace metal in animals, which plays an important role in iron absorption and hemoglobin synthesis. However, no published study has evaluated Chinese yam polysaccharide copper complex (CYP-Cu) as a dietary additive in broilers. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary CYP-Cu on growth performance, immunity, and oxidative resistance in broilers. A total of 360 1-day-old 817 broiler chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups, with 3 replicates of 30 birds each and were fed a basal diet with the addition of 0 (control group), 0.02, 0.10, and 0.50 g/kg CYP-Cu. The feeding trial lasted 48 days. On day 28 and day 48, 6 broilers in each group were slaughtered, respectively. Then the parameters of growth and carcass, serum biochemistry, immunity, and antioxidation, and the expression level of hepatic antioxidative genes were investigated. The results showed that compared with the control group, the supplementation of dietary CYP-Cu could improve the indexes of the growth, carcass, serum biochemistry, immunity and oxidation resistance in broilers, such as average daily gain (ADG), the slaughter percentage (SP), semi-evisceration weight percentage (SEWP), eviscerated carcass weight percentage (EWP), breast muscle percentage (BMP), leg muscle percentage (LMP), serum albumin (ALB), high density lipoprotein (HDL), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), growth hormone (GH), insulin (INS), immunoglobulin M (IgM), immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin A (IgA), interleukin 2 (IL-2), interleukin 4 (IL-4), interleukin 6 (IL-6), complement 3 (C3), complement 4 (C4), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione s-transferase (GSH-ST); these parameters in the 0.10 g/kg CYP-Cu treated group were significantly increased (P < 0.05) in the total trial period, with the exceptions that feed conversion ratio (FCR) and serum low density lipoprotein (LDL), malondialdehyde (MDA) were decreased in the total trial period. In addition, the antioxidative gene mRNA expression of Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf ₂), Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD ₁), Superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD ₂), and Catalase (CAT) were upregulated in the liver (P < 0.05). These results indicated that the supplementation of dietary CYP-Cu improved the growth, immunity, and oxidation resistance of broilers, and the addition of 0.10 g/kg CYP-Cu in broiler diets is recommended, which suggests that CYP-Cu may be a promising green feed additive in the poultry industry.

Preparation and Performance Evolution of Plasma Sprayed Abradable CuAl/PHB-NiAl Layered Seal Coatings

In this study, a double-layered CuAl/PHB-NiAl seal coating was prepared on a GH4169 substrate by atmospheric plasma spraying. The evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the coating under simulated working conditions was studied. The surface hardness of as-sprayed coating decreased with an increase in the temperature from 25 to 700 °C, decreasing from 90.42 HR15Y to 66.83 HR15Y. A CuO phase was formed in the coating and the oxidation weight gain rate increased with an increase in the temperature when the coating was constantly oxidized at 500~700 °C for 100 h. The hardness of metal matrix in the coating increased with the extension in the oxidation time at 600 °C, increasing from 120.8 HV_0.1 to 143.02 HV_0.1. The residual stress of the as-sprayed porous CuAl top-coating was less than that of the top-coating/bond-coating interface, and it is further relieved by about 15~20 MPa after heat treatment. The coating porosity first increased and then decreased when the oxidation time was 1000 h. The further ablation of PHB and the formation of oxide were concluded to be the main reasons for the evolution of porosity.

From Mo-Si-B to Mo-Ti-Si-B Alloys: A Short Review

Mo-Si-B alloys have attracted considerable research interest during the last several decades due to their high melting points, excellent high-temperature strength and relatively good oxidation resistance. However, insufficient room-temperature fracture toughness and high-temperature oxidation resistance restrain their further application. Generally, a sufficient volume fraction of BCC-Mo solid-solution phase, providing the ductility, and a high Si content, responsible for the formation of passive oxide scales, is difficult to achieve simultaneously in this ternary system. Recently, macroalloying of Ti has been proposed to establish a novel phase equilibrium with a combination of enough BCC phase and intermetallic compounds that contain a large amount of Si. In this article, the development history from the ternary Mo-Si-B to the quaternary Mo-Ti-Si-B system was reviewed. It was found that the constitution phases could be easily tailored by changing the Ti content. In this regard, better performance of mechanical properties and oxidation resistance can be obtained through proper alloy design. In-depth understanding of the advantages of the quaternary alloys over their ternary ancestors may contribute to bringing about a new concept in designing novel ultra-high-temperature structural materials.

Lipid and Protein Oxidation of Brown Rice and Selenium-Rich Brown Rice during Storage

Selenium-rich rice has become one of the effective ways to increase people's selenium intake. Selenium-containing proteins have higher antioxidant properties, which may lead to selenium-rich brown rice (Se-BR) having better storage stability than ordinary brown rice (BR). By measuring the peroxidation value, fatty acid value, carbonyl value and protein secondary structure, it was found that Se-BR had higher oxidation resistance stability than BR. The biological function of the differential proteins (DEPs) between ordinary brown rice stored for 0 days (BR-0) and 180 days (BR-6) as well as Se-rich brown rice stored for 0 days (Se-0) and 180 days (Se-6) was investigated by using iTRAQ. A total of 237, 235, 113 and 213 DEPs were identified from group A (BR-0/BR-6), group B (Se-0/Se-6), group C (BR-0/Se-0) and group D (BR-6/Se-6), respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that the DEPs were mainly enriched in glucose metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle, fatty acid biosynthesis and degradation, glutathione metabolism, sulfur metabolism, peroxisome and other metabolic pathways. This study provides theoretical support for the study of protein oxidation kinetics and storage quality control of brown rice during storage.

OPPS Fibers with High Temperature Resistance and Excellent Antioxidant Properties by an Oxidation Method

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fiber products have been widely used for separation and filtration in harsh environments due to their excellent chemical resistance and relatively economical price. However, the poor temperature and weak oxidation resistance of PPS significantly shorten its service life under high temperature and strong oxidation environments. Herein, we report a type of oxidation-modified PPS (OPPS) fibers with excellent high temperature and oxidation resistance. This is achieved by oxidizing the thioether sulfide groups in PPS molecular chains into sulfoxide and sulfone groups and cross-linking the intermolecular chains. Both experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that hypochlorous acid (HClO) molecules can rapidly oxidize the PPS fiber surface. In addition, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations prove that there are strong hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions between HClO molecules and OPPS molecular chains, which promote the penetration of HClO molecules into the interior of the fiber to complete the layer-by-layer oxidation. The prepared OPPS-20 fibers exhibit excellent structural stability under high temperature and strong oxidant environments. Impressively, the OPPS-20 nonwoven filter still exhibits a high dust filtration efficiency of 99.95% after aging at 320 °C for 12 h, and the corresponding pressure drop is 24 Pa. In addition, the OPPS-20 nonwoven filter also maintains excellent filtration performance after aging in 60% HNO3 solution for 12 h, and the filtration efficiency and pressure drop are 99.96% and 29 Pa, respectively. This work demonstrates that the novel OPPS fibers have excellent application prospects in the field of separation and filtration in harsh environments.

The Effects of Alloying Elements Cr, Al, and Si on Oxidation Behaviors of Ni-Based Superalloys

Oxidation behaviors of three Ni-based model alloys and pure Ni in the temperature range of 700-1200 °C are investigated to reveal effects of Cr, Al, and Si on the oxidation resistance of Ni-based superalloys. The formation and integrity of consecutive chromia or alumina layers are important for excellent oxidation resistance. The addition of 20 at.% Cr can effectively improve the oxidation resistance of Ni-based alloys by forming a thin chromia film below 1000 °C, while adding 15 at.% Al has a beneficial effect on the oxidation resistance of Ni-based alloys at temperatures above 900 °C. The addition of 2 at.% Si to Ni-Al alloy is insufficient to form a protective SiO₂ layer but can accelerate the formation of alumina, which enables Ni-Al alloy to form a consecutive inner alumina layer at a relatively low temperature of 800 °C and further improve the oxidation resistance above 800 °C.

Enhancing the stability of environmental resistance of alloyed CdZnSeS@ZnS quantum dots by doping Ti ions into shell layer

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising luminescent materials for display and lighting, but their stability has long been an issue. Here, we designed a passivation strategy of doping Ti ions into the shell of alloyed CdZnSeS@ZnS QDs. The results showed that Ti ions were successfully doped into the ZnS shell and the stability of QDs was improved. In the aging test, the Ti ions doped QDs maintained 51.4% of the initial performance after 90 h of aging, while the pristine QDs decreased to less than 25% of the initial value. In addition, we discuss the reasons why Ti ions doping improves the stability of QDs. Ti ions are found to form Ti-S bonds in the ZnS shell, which has high binding energy and strong oxidation resistance. Most importantly, since there is no external physical insulating coating, the optimized QDs can also be directly used in electroluminescent devices, showing great potential in electroluminescence applications.

Sol-Gel-Derived Ni3Al Coating on Nickel Alloy for Oxidation Resistance in Supercritical Water Environments

Although nickel-based alloys are widely used in industries due to their oxidation and corrosion resistance, the pursuit of better performance in harsh environments is still a great challenge. In this work, we developed a sol-gel method to synthesize Ni₃Al coating on a nickel alloy, assisted by a post-annealing process, and investigated the oxidation-resistant performance. The coating thickness can be controlled by designing the deposition times, which keep the pure Ni₃Al phase stable. In addition, the surface morphologies indicate that the coating is compact without obvious voids or cracks. Furthermore, the oxidation-resistant property of the coating was investigated by carrying out a supercritical water oxidation experiment. The crystalline structure and surface morphology of the samples before and after 72-h oxidation demonstrated the superior oxidation resistance of the coating. This work provides a convenient method to fabricate an oxidation-resistant coating on a nickel-based alloy, which would be significant for prolonging the service life of vessels under oxidation conditions, especially for supercritical water reactions.

Flexible Full-Surface Conformal Encapsulation for Each Fiber in Graphene Glass Fiber Fabric against Thermal Oxidation

Encapsulation for carbon-based electronic devices against oxidation can enhance their long-term working stability. Graphene glass fiber fabric (GGFF), as an advanced flexible electrothermal material, also struggles with graphene oxidation. The flexible, full-surface, conformal encapsulation for each fiber in the large-area fabric puts forward high requirements for encapsulating materials and techniques. Herein, the nanometer-thick h-BN layer was in situ grown on cambered surfaces of each fiber in GGFF with the chemical vapor deposition method. Stable heating duration (500 °C) of h-BN-encapsulated GGFF (h-BN/GGFF) was increased by 1 order of magnitude without compromising the electrothermal performances and flexibility. Theoretical simulations revealed that the enhanced oxidation resistance of h-BN/GGFF was attributed to the decreased interaction and adsorption life of oxygen. The proposed flexible, full-surface, conformal encapsulation technique targeting the fiber-shaped graphene electrothermal device is scalable and can be extended to the other carbon materials, even devices with intricate shapes, which will promote the development of flexible electronics.

[Effects of exogenous melatonin on antioxidant capacity and nutrient uptake of Lolium perenne and Medicago sativa under drought stress]

To explore the effects of exogenous melatonin on antioxidant capacity and nutrient uptake of plants under drought stress, we used Lolium perenne and Medicago sativa potted seedlings for foliar spraying and root application of 100 μmol·L^-1 melatonin, respectively. We measured the biomass, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, relative conductivity, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities, as well as nutrient contents (organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus) under drought stress. The results showed that the biomass of L. perenne and M. sativa decreased significantly under drought stress, and that external melatonin application could effectively alleviate the inhibitory effect of drought stress on L. perenne and M. sativa. Foliar spray and root application of melatonin under drought stress enhanced L. perenne biomass by 14.5% and 29.6%, and that of M. sativa by 36.6% and 49.1%, respectively. The SOD and POD activities in L. perenne and SOD activity in M. sativa significantly decreased under drought stress, and exogenous melatonin significantly increased SOD, POD and CAT activities in L. perenne and M. sativa, reduced the accumulation of MDA in leaves, caused a significant decrease in the relative conductivity of leaves, and significantly increased antioxidant capacity. Drought stress and exogenous melatonin did not affect organic carbon content of L. perenne and M. sativa. Under drought stress, the contents of N and P in L. perenne leaves and roots and the content of N in M. sativa roots decreased, while the application of melatonin increased the contents of N and P in roots and leaves of L. perenne and M. sativa, indicating that melatonin could regulate the nutrient absorption of L. perenne and M. sativa under drought stress. In conclusion, the melatonin application not only improved the antioxidant capacity of plants, but also regulated nutrient uptake to enhance plant resilience to drought stress. Foliar spraying of melatonin was more effective than root application.

Fluorine Effect for Improving Oxidation Resistance of Ti-45Al-8.5Nb Alloy at 1000 °C

In-depth analyses of the anti-oxidation behavior and structure of γ-TiAl alloys are of great significant for their maintenance and repair in engineering applications. In this work, fluorine-treated Ti-45Al-8.5Nb alloys and fluorine-treated oxidized specimens with artificial defects were prepared by isothermal oxidation treatment at 1000 °C. Several characterization methods, including SEM, EDS, XRD and TEM, were used to evaluate the surface microstructure of the fluorine-treated Ti-45Al-8.5Nb alloys and fluorine-treated oxidized specimens with artificial defects. The results indicate that the fluorine promoted the formation of an outer protective film of Al₂O₃, which significantly improved the oxidation resistance. The microcracks of oxidized specimens with the artificial defects provided a rapid diffusion passage for Ti and O elements during the 1000 °C/2 h isothermal oxidation treatment process, resulting in the quick growth of TiO₂ toward the outside. The fine Al₂O₃ constituted a continuous film after the 1000 °C/100 h isothermal oxidation treatment. In particular, Al₂O₃ particles grew toward the substrate, which was ascribed to the good oxidation resistance and adhesion. These results may provide an approach for the repair of protective oxide film on the surface of blades and turbine disks based on γ-TiAl alloys.

Self-Organizing, Environmentally Stable, and Low-Cost Copper-Nickel Complex Inks for Printed Flexible Electronics

Cost-effective copper conductive inks are considered as the most promising alternative to expensive silver conductive inks for use in printed electronics. However, the low stability and high sintering temperature of copper inks hinder their practical application. Herein, we develop rapidly customizable and stable copper-nickel complex inks that can be transformed in situ into uniform copper@nickel core-shell nanostructures by a self-organized process during low-temperature annealing and immediately sintered under photon irradiation to form copper-nickel alloy patterns on flexible substrates. The complex inks are synthesized within 15 min via a simple mixing process and are particle-free, air-stable, and compatible with large-area screen printing. The manufactured patterns exhibit a high conductivity of 19-67 μΩ·cm, with the value depending on the nickel content, and can maintain high oxidation resistance at 180 °C even when the nickel content is as low as 6 wt %. In addition, the printed copper-nickel alloy patterns exhibit high flexibility as a consequence of the local softening and mechanical anchoring effect between the metal pattern and the flexible substrate, showing strong potential in the additive manufacturing of highly reliable flexible electronics, such as flexible radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags and various wearable sensors.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties and Oxidation Resistance of Zirconium Diboride Ceramics via Grain-Refining and Dislocation Regulation

Zirconium diboride (ZrB₂ ) is considered as one of the most promising ultra-high temperature materials for the applications in extreme environments. However, the difficulty in fabrication of ZrB₂ limits its industrial applications. In this study, fully dense and grain-refined ZrB₂ is prepared under ultra-high pressure of 15 GPa at low temperature of 1450 °C. The as-prepared ZrB₂ exhibits excellent mechanical and oxidation-resistant properties. Compared with raw powder, the grain size decreases 56%. Compared with high-temperature sintered control specimen beyond 2000 °C, the hardness and fracture toughness increase about 46% and 69%, respectively, the dislocation density increase 3 orders of magnitude, while the grain size considerably decrease 96%. According to work hardening, Hall-Petch and Taylor dislocation hardening effects, the refined grains, substructures, and high dislocation density caused by plastic deformation during sintering can enhance the mechanical properties. The unique structure contributes to a threshold oxidation temperature increase of ≈250 °C relative to the high-temperature sintered ZrB₂ , achieving one of the highest values (1100 °C) among the reported monolithic ultra-high temperature ceramics. A developed densification mechanism of dislocation multiplication with grain refining is proposed and proved to dominate the sintering, which is responsible for simultaneous improvements in mechanical and oxidation-resistant properties.

Catalytic Polymerization of Phthalonitrile Resins by Carborane with Enhanced Thermal Oxidation Resistance: Experimental and Molecular Simulation

Biphenyl phthalonitrile (BPh) resins with good thermal and thermo-oxidative stability demonstrate great application potential in aerospace and national defense industries. However, BPh monomer has a high melting point, poor solubility, slow curing speed and high curing temperature. It is difficult to control the polymerization process to obtain the resins with high performance. Here, a BPh prepolymer (BPh-Q) was prepared by reacting 1,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane (QCB) with BPh monomers. The BPh-Q exhibited much better solubility, faster curing speed and lower curing temperature compared with pure BPh and BPh modified with bisphenol A (BPh-B, a common prepolymer of BPh). Thus, the polymerization process of BPh was greatly accelerated at a low temperature, resulting in a BPh resin with enhanced thermostability and oxidation resistance. The experimental and theoretical models revealed the promotion effect of B-H bond on the curing reaction of phthalonitrile via Markovnikov addition reaction due to the special steric structure of carborane. This study provided an efficient method to obtain low-temperature curing phthalonitrile resins with high thermal and thermo-oxidative resistance, which would be potentially useful for the preparation of high-performance cyanide resin-based composites.

The Influence of Pd and Zr Co-Doping on the Microstructure and Oxidation Resistance of Aluminide Coatings on the CMSX-4 Nickel Superalloy

Pd + Zr co-doped aluminide coatings were deposited on the CMSX-4 nickel superalloy, widely used in the aircraft industry, in order to investigate their microstructure and improvement of oxidation resistance. Palladium was deposited by the electrochemical method, whereas zirconium and aluminum by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Coatings consist of two zones: the additive and the interdiffusion one. The additive zone contains β–(Ni,Pd)Al phase with some zirconium-rich precipitates close to the coating’s surface, whereas the interdiffusion zone consists of the same β–(Ni,Pd)Al phase with inclusions of refractory elements that diffused from the substrate, so called topologically closed-packed phases. Palladium dissolves in the β–NiAl phase and β–(Ni,Pd)Al phase is being formed. Pd + Zr co-doping improved the oxidation resistance of analysed coatings better than Pd mono-doping. Mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon and the synergistic effect of palladium and zirconium are discussed.

Thermodynamic and Structural Modelling of Non-Stoichiometric Ln-Doped UO2 Solid Solutions, Ln = {La, Pr, Nd, Gd}

Available data on the dependence of the equilibrium chemical potential of oxygen on degrees of doping, z, and non-stoichiometry, x, y, in U_1-z Ln _z O_2+0.5(x-y) fluorite solid solutions and data on the dependence of the lattice parameter, a, on the same variables are combined within a unified structural-thermodynamic model. The thermodynamic model fits experimental isotherms of the oxygen potential under the assumptions of a non-ideal mixing of the endmembers, UO₂, UO_2.5, UO_1.5, LnO_1.5, and Ln _0.5U_0.5O₂, and of a significant reduction in the configurational entropy arising from short-range ordering (SRO) within cation-anion distributions. The structural model further investigates the SRO in terms of constraints on admissible values of cation coordination numbers and, building on these constraints, fits the lattice parameter as a function of z, y, and x. Linking together the thermodynamic and structural models allows predicting the lattice parameter as a function of z, T and the oxygen partial pressure. The model elucidates contrasting structural and thermodynamic changes due to the doping with LaO_1.5, on the one hand, and with NdO_1.5 and GdO_1.5, on the other hand. An increased oxidation resistance in the case of Gd and Nd is attributed to strain effects caused by the lattice contraction due to the doping and to an increased thermodynamic cost of a further contraction required by the oxidation.

Boosting Chemodynamic Therapy via a Synergy of Hypothermal Ablation and Oxidation Resistance Reduction

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), deemed as a cutting-edge antineoplastic therapeutic tactics, efficaciously suppresses tumors via catalytically yielding hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) in tumor regions. Nevertheless, its biomedical applications are often restricted by the limited hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) level and upregulated antioxidant defense. Herein, a versatile nanoreactor is elaborately designed via integrating Cu_2-xS and MnO₂ for T₁-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-guided CDT, synergistically enhanced through hypothermal ablation and oxidation resistance reduction, thereby displaying splendid antitumor efficiency as well as suppression on pulmonary metastasis. The as-synthesized Cu_2-xS@MnO₂ nanoreactors afford acid-dependent Cu-based and glutathione (GSH)-activated Mn-based catalytic properties for bimodal CDT. Owing to excellent absorbance at the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window, the Cu_2-xS furnishes hypo-photo-thermal therapy (PTT) against tumor growth and ameliorates the catalytic performance for thermal-enhanced CDT. Additionally, MnO₂ significantly downregulates GSH and glutathione peroxidase 4, which synergistically boosts CDT via promoting oxidative stress, simultaneously generating Mn²⁺ for MR contrast improvement and activatable tumor imaging. Therefore, this study proffers a new attempt centered on the collaborative strategy integrating NIR-II hypothermal PTT and synergistically enhanced CDT for tumor eradication.

Identification of an Apis cerana zinc finger protein 41 gene and its involvement in the oxidative stress response

Zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) are a class of transcription factors that contain zinc finger domains and play important roles in growth, aging, and responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. These proteins activate or inhibit gene transcription by binding to single-stranded DNA or RNA and through RNA/DNA bidirectional binding and protein-protein interactions. However, few studies have focused on the oxidation resistance functions of ZFPs in insects, particularly Apis cerana. In the current study, we identified a ZFP41 gene from A. cerana, AcZFP41, and verified its function in oxidative stress responses. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that the transcription level of AcZFP41 was upregulated to different degrees during exposure to oxidative stress, including that induced by extreme temperature, UV radiation, or pesticides. In addition, the silencing of AcZFP41 led to changes in the expression patterns of some known antioxidant genes. Moreover, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in AcZFP41-silenced honeybees were higher than those in a control group. In summary, the data indicate that AcZFP41 is involved in the oxidative stress response. The results provide a theoretical basis for further studies of zinc finger proteins and improve our understanding of the antioxidant mechanisms of honeybees.

Effect of supplementing hydroxy selenomethionine on meat quality of yellow feather broiler

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing hydroxy selenomethionine (OH-SeMet) on performance, selenium (Se) deposition in the breast muscle, quality and oxidative stability, and expression of selenoprotein encoding genes of breast meat of the native slow-growing yellow-feathered broiler birds. A total of 375 one-day-old local yellow male birds were randomly assigned into 5 dietary treatments, supplemented with Se 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mg/kg in the form of OH-SeMet. Each treatment consisted of 5 replicates and each replicate had 15 birds, the birds were fed on basal diet containing corn and soybean meal, and the experiment lasted for 63 d. The results showed that dietary Se supplementation linearly increased (P < 0.001) Se contents in both serum and muscle, no significant changes (P > 0.05) were observed on growth performance, yield of breast, meat color, and intramuscular fat deposition of the breast muscle. Dietary Se addition improved water-holding capacity, the pH_24h value, and tenderness of breast muscle, evidenced by a linear decreases of shear force (P < 0.05), accompanied by lower thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and higher glutathione reductase activity. The mRNA abundance of selenoprotein encoding genes also responded to dietary Se levels. It is concluded that, dietary supplementation with OH-SeMet improved muscular Se deposition and meat quality of the native yellow birds, with enhanced antioxidant capability and regulation in selenogenome.

Crystal structure of the TLDc domain of human NCOA7-AS

The TLDc [Tre2/Bub2/Cdc16 (TBC), lysin motif (LysM), domain catalytic] domain is associated with oxidation-resistance related functions and is well conserved among eukaryotes. Seven proteins possess a TLDc domain in humans, notably proteins belonging to the oxidation resistance protein (OXR), nuclear receptor coactivator 7 (NCOA7) and TBC1 domain family member 24 (TBC1D24) families. Although the mechanism is unknown, a protective role of TLDc proteins against oxidative stress, notably in the brain, has been demonstrated. Neurobiological disorders caused by mutations in the TLDc domain have also been reported. The human NCOA7 gene encodes several mRNA isoforms; among these, isoform 4, named NCOA7-AS, is up-regulated by type 1 interferon in response to viral infection. NCOA7 and NCOA7-AS both interact with several subunits of the vacuolar proton pump V-ATPase, which leads to increased acidification of the endolysosomal system and consequently impairs infection by viruses that enter their host cells through the endosomal pathway, such as influenza A virus and hepatitis C virus. Similarly to full-length NCOA7, NCOA7-AS possesses a TLDc domain in its C-terminus. Structures of TLDc domains have been reported from zebrafish and fly but not from humans. Here, the expression, purification and crystallization of the TLDc domain from NCOA7 and NCOA7-AS is reported. The crystal structure solved at 1.8 Å resolution is compared with previously solved three-dimensional structures of TLDc domains.

Modified MAX Phase Synthesis for Environmentally Stable and Highly Conductive Ti3C2 MXene

One of the primary factors limiting further research and commercial use of the two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide MXene Ti₃C₂, as well as MXenes in general, is the rate at which freshly made samples oxidize and degrade when stored as aqueous suspensions. Here, we show that including excess aluminum during synthesis of the Ti₃AlC₂ MAX phase precursor leads to Ti₃AlC₂ grains with improved crystallinity and carbon stoichiometry (termed Al-Ti₃AlC₂). MXene nanosheets (Al-Ti₃C₂) produced from this precursor are of higher quality, as evidenced by their increased resistance to oxidation and an increase in their electronic conductivity up to 20 000 S/cm. Aqueous suspensions of stoichiometric single- to few-layer Al-Ti₃C₂ flakes produced from the modified Al-Ti₃AlC₂ have a shelf life of over ten months, compared to 1 to 2 weeks for previously published Ti₃C₂, even when stored in ambient conditions. Freestanding films made from Al-Ti₃C₂ suspensions stored for ten months show minimal decreases in electrical conductivity and negligible oxidation. Furthermore, oxidation of the improved Al-Ti₃C₂ in air initiates at temperatures that are 100-150 °C higher than that of conventional Ti₃C₂. The observed improvements in both the shelf life and properties of Al-Ti₃C₂ will facilitate the widespread use of this material.

Structure and Properties of Zr-Mo-Si-B-(N) Hard Coatings Obtained by d.c. Magnetron Sputtering of ZrB2-MoSi2 Target

Coatings in a Zr-Mo-Si-B-N system were deposited by the magnetron sputtering of ZrB₂-MoSi₂ targets in argon and nitrogen. The structure of the coatings was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy. Mechanical and tribological properties were measured using nanoindentation and pin-on-disc testing. Oxidation resistance and oxidation kinetics were estimated via annealing in air at 1000-1500 °C and precision weight measurements. We found that the coatings deposited in Ar demonstrate a superior combination of properties, including hardness of 36 GPa, elastic recovery of 84%, a friction coefficient of 0.6, and oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1200 °C. High oxidation resistance is realized due to the formation of the protective (SiO₂ + ZrO₂)/SiO₂ oxide layer, which inhibits the diffusion of oxygen into the coating.

The Oxidation Behavior of ZrB2-SiC Ceramic Composites Fabricated by Plasma Spray Process

Our goal is to develop a structural ceramic for high-temperature applications in which silicon carbide-based materials (SiCs) are used as matrix composites. The potential of SiCs to deposit a mixture of SiC and zirconium diboride (ZrB₂) plasma spray coating is analyzed. To deposit thermal barrier layers containing up to 50 vol.% SiC, a high-pressure plasma spray (HPPS) process was used. Although the SiC cannot be deposited by thermal spray, a mixture of SiC and zirconium diboride (ZrB₂) was deposited because these two compounds form a eutectic phase at a temperature below SiC decomposition. The preference was two different forms, 3 mm and 1 mm, of graphite substrates with different thickness values. A comparison of the morphology of SiC-ZrB₂ coatings before and after thermal treatment was performed by applying heat to the surface of a gas torch and traditional furnace between 800 °C and 1200 °C. The growth of the oxide scale was calculated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and density. The oxide scale consists of a SiO₂ layer with ZrO₂ groups. The findings indicate a greater potential for the studied material in protecting against high-temperature oxidation and in a wide variety of aerospace applications.

Boron Nitride Nanotubes Versus Carbon Nanotubes: A Thermal Stability and Oxidation Behavior Study

Nanotubes made of boron nitride (BN) and carbon have attracted considerable attention within the literature due to their unique mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. In this work, BN and carbon nanotubes, exhibiting high purity (>99%) and similar surface areas (~200 m2/g), were systematically investigated for their thermal stability and oxidation behavior by combining thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry methods at temperatures of up to ~1300 °C under a synthetic air flow environment. The BN nanotubes showed a good resistance to oxidation up to ~900 °C and fully transformed to boron oxide up to ~1100 °C, while the carbon nanotubes were stable up to ~450 °C and almost completely combusted up to ~800 °C. The different oxidation mechanisms are attributed to the different chemical nature of the two types of nanotubes.

Effect of Ga on the Oxide Film Structure and Oxidation Resistance of Sn-Bi-Zn Alloys as Heat Transfer Fluids

The effect of gallium on the oxide film structure and overall oxidation resistance of low melting point Sn-Bi-Zn alloys was investigated under air atmosphere using thermogravimetric analyses. The liquid alloys studied had a Ga content of 1-7 wt.%. The results showed that the growth rates of the surface scale formed on the Sn-Bi-Zn-Ga alloys conformed to the parabolic law. The oxidation resistance of Sn-Bi-Zn alloys was improved by Ga addition and the activation energies increased from 12.05 kJ∙mol^-1 to 22.20 kJ∙mol^-1. The structure and elemental distribution of the oxide film surface and cross-section were found to become more complicated and denser with Ga addition. Further, the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction show that Ga elements accumulate on the surface of the liquid metal to form oxides, which significantly slowed the oxidation of the surface of the liquid alloy.

Review of microstructure and properties of low temperature lead-free solder in electronic packaging

Low temperature solder (In-based, Sn-Bi, Sn-Zn) has great advantages in aerospace and through-hole technology assemblies in IBM mainframe due to its unique low temperature characteristics. The review evaluates the effects of alloying elements, rare earth elements and nanoparticles on the wettability, microstructure, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of the low-temperature solders.
