Alkali and alkaline earth elements in follicular fluid and the likelihood of diminished ovarian reserve in reproductive-aged women: a case‒control study. J Ovarian Res 2024; 17:108. Abstract
BACKGROUND Imbalances in alkali elements (AEs) and alkaline earth elements (AEEs) cause reproductive disorders. However, it remains unclear whether AEs/AEEs in follicular fluid have a relationship with the serious reproductive disorder known as diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). METHODS A nested case‒control study was carried out in China. Follicular fluid samples from 154 DOR patients and 154 controls were collected and assessed for nine AEs/AEE levels. Both the mixed and single effects of the elements on DOR were estimated with a Bayesian kernel machine (BKMR) and logistic regressions. RESULTS The DOR group had higher median concentrations of Li, Na, and K in follicular fluid (all P values < 0.05). The logistic regression showed that compared with their lowest tertile, the high tertiles of K [OR:2.45 (1.67-4.43)], Li [OR: 1.89 (1.06-3.42)], and Cs [OR: 1.97 (1.10-3.54)] were significantly associated with the odds of DOR. The BKMR model reported that the DOR likelihood increased linearly across the 25th through 75th percentiles of the nine-AE/AEE mixture, while the AE group contributed more to the overall effect. CONCLUSION This study revealed an association in which the likelihood of DOR increased with higher overall concentrations of AE/AEEs in follicular fluid. Among the nine detected elements, K, Li, and Cs exhibited significant individual associations with DOR. We provide new clues for the environmental factors on female fertility decline. Abstract
BACKGROUND Some elements were claimed to play a role in the pathogenesis of congenital heart defects (CHD) and influence the general well-being and health of these children. OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the levels of some elements simultaneously in the blood and teeth samples of children with cyanotic and acyanotic CHD compared with healthy children. METHODS A total of 39 children with CHD (11 with cyanotic and 28 with acyanotic CHD) and 42 age- and sex-adjusted controls were enrolled. Levels of 13 elements, including magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, chromium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, strontium, cadmium, lead, mercury, and molybdenum, were assessed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. RESULTS Children with cyanotic and acyanotic CHD had significantly lower teeth calcium and calcium/phosphorus ratio as compared to the controls after adjusting for confounders. The mean blood iron level was found to be significantly higher in the cyanotic CHD group compared to the other groups. In addition, children with acyanotic CHD had significantly higher teeth copper levels, higher blood molybdenum and lower blood magnesium levels compared to the healthy control group. Blood cadmium and mercury levels were found to be significantly elevated in both the cyanotic and acyanotic CHD groups compared to the healthy control group. There were no differences in toxic metal levels of teeth in cases with CHD. CONCLUSION Monitoring adequate and balanced gestational micronutrient intake might support not only maternal health but also fetal cardiac development and infant well-being. Supplementation of magnesium should be evaluated in patients having CHD.

Abstract
Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) is a powerful technical tool used in the biomedical field to investigate the proportion of chemical elements of interest in research, such as heavy metal bioaccumulation and the enzymatic cofactors and nanoparticle therapy in various pathologies. However, the correct evaluation of the proportion of the elements is subject to some factors, including the method of sample preservation. In this study, we seek to investigate the effect of biological tissue preservation methods on the proportion of chemical elements obtained by the EDS methodology. For such, we used EDS to measure the proportion of chemical elements with biomedical interest in preserved livers, using three common methods for preserving biological tissues: (a) freezing, (b) paraformaldehyde fixative solution, and (c) Karnovsky solution. We found an increased level of sodium and reduced contents of potassium and copper in samples fixed in fixative solutions, when compared to frozen samples (p < 0.05). Our data indicate that preservation methods can change the proportion of chemical elements in biological samples, when measured by EDS. Frozen preservation should be preferred to retain the actual chemical content of samples and allow a correct assessment of the proportion of their elements.

Abstract
This paper introduces an 1 H NMR method to identify individual divalent metal cations Be2+ , Mg2+ , Ca2+ , Sr2+ , Zn2+ , Cd2+ , Hg2+ , Sn2+ , and Pb2+ in aqueous salt solutions through their unique signal shift and coupling after complexation with the salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Furthermore, quantitative determination applied for the divalent metal cations Ca2+ , Mg2+ , Hg2+ , Sn2+ , Pb2+ , and Zn2+ (limit of quantification: 5-22 μg/ml) can be achieved using an excess of EDTA with aqueous model salt solutions. An internal standard is not required because a known excess of EDTA is added and the remaining free EDTA can be used to recalculate the quantity of chelated metal cations. The utility of the method is demonstrated for the analysis of divalent cations in some food supplements and in pharmaceutical products.

Abstract
Characterization of coffee terroirs is important to determine authenticity and provide confidence for consumers to select the right product. In this regard, Amhara Region, which is located at the northwestern part of Ethiopia, produces various local coffee types with distinct cup qualities. The coffees are, however, not yet registered with certification marks or trademarks for indications of their geographical origins. This study was aimed at developing analytical methodology useful to determine the geographical origin of green coffee beans produced in Amhara Region based on multi-element analysis combined with multivariate statistical techniques. For this, a total of 120 samples of green coffee beans, collected from four major cultivating zones (West Gojjam, East Gojjam, Awi, and Bahir Dar Especial Zones) were analyzed for K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Si, Cr, Cd, and Pb using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The elemental analysis data were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). PCA was used to explore the natural groupings of samples and the discriminatory ability of elements. Accordingly, the elements K, Mg, Ca, and Na were found to be the main discriminators among samples. LDA provided a model to classify the coffee samples based on their production zones with an accuracy of 94.2% and prediction ability of 93.4%. Thus, the elemental composition of green coffee beans can be used as a chemical descriptor in the authentication of coffee produced in Amhara Region.

Abstract
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus, presented as a major teratogenic cause worldwide. This study discussed alternation and correlation of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), and selenium (Se) among DPN patients and healthy people using multivariate statistical analysis. Fifty patients with DPN were recruited from endocrinology department, First Hospital of Jilin University between January 2010 and October 2011 and also 50 healthy subjects were enrolled at the same time. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to assay elements in serum and urine. Cluster analysis was used to clarify alternation of elements' homogeneity. Factor analysis was performed to evaluate the most informative kinds of elements. Mg, Ca, Zn, and Cr in DPN patients were significantly lower in serum whereas significantly higher in urine. Elements were clustered into 4 or 5 clusters based on internal association using between-groups linkage algorithm. Serum Cr, Se, and Fe were grouped, and Mg related to Ca more closely in both serum and urine in DPN. Factor analysis revealed discrepancies of elements' contribution. Cr, Se, and Fe appeared to be the most crucial factors contributing to DPN. Mg, Ca, Zn, and Cu were more influential, whereas Cr became less potent to disease. Contributed value of elements could be determined and specified using loadings in scree plot. Future studies and delicate statistical models should be applied.

Abstract
Concentrations and spatial variations of the four cations Na, K, Mg and Ca are known to some extent for groundwater and to a lesser extent for drinking water. Using Denmark as case, the purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal variations in the major cations in drinking water. The results will contribute to a better exposure estimation in future studies of the association between cations and diseases. Spatial and temporal variations and the association with aquifer types, were analyzed with spatial scan statistics, linear regression and a multilevel mixed-effects linear regression model. About 65,000 water samples of each cation (1980–2017) were included in the study. Results of mean concentrations were 31.4 mg/L, 3.5 mg/L, 12.1 mg/L and 84.5 mg/L for 1980–2017 for Na, K, Mg and Ca, respectively. An expected west-east trend in concentrations were confirmed, mainly explained by variations in aquifer types. The trend in concentration was stable for about 31–45% of the public water supply areas. It is therefore recommended that the exposure estimate in future health related studies not only be based on a single mean value, but that temporal and spatial variations should also be included.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Elemental deficiencies or in excess effects growth and development. Pacific population are at a disadvantage due to food insecurity as compared to New Zealand European households. This study aims to evaluate the status and interrelationship of elements (essential, non-essential and toxic) in nine-year-old Pacific children who were part of the Pacific Island Families Study living in New Zealand. MATERIALS AND METHODS This observational study included 278 eligible nine-year-old children. Essential elements (including calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, zinc, molybdenum), non-essential and toxic elements (arsenic, aluminum, antimony, boron, cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel,) were determined in toenails and after acid digestion, analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Principal component analysis and multivariate analysis of covariance was used to identify differences in the groups of elements and the inter-correlations between elements. RESULTS The mean calcium (868μg/g Ca), selenium (0.35μg/g Se) and zinc (129μg/g Zn) concentrations were lower while the mean cadmium (0.21μg/g Cd) lead (0.86μg/g Pb) and mercury (0.72μg/g Hg) concentrations were higher than the optimal health requirements. Ethnic differences in relation to toenail elemental concentrations were observed for aluminium and iron. Gender differences were observed for aluminium, antimony, arsenic and lead. Selenium and molybdenum were inversely associated with mercury. Manganese, zinc and calcium were positively associated. CONCLUSIONS This research contributes to the understanding of the elemental concentrations for Pacific children by using tissue samples from toenails, which improves the completeness of sampling than other tissues and provides a longer exposure time frame. The study also reports several inter-correlations between essential, non-essential and toxic elements in Pacific Island population.

Abstract
A single-laboratory validation method for the simultaneous determination of nutrient and non-nutrient metals in commercial fertilizers was reviewed by the AOAC Expert Review Panel (ERP) and Stakeholder Panel for Fertilizers at the 2017 midyear AOAC INTERNATIONAL meeting. In addition to using 15 of the original 30 fertilizer materials from the previous Method 2006.03 collaborative study, NIST Standard Certified Reference Material 695 and Magruder check sample 2009-06 were also incorporated as accuracy, recovery, and repeatability materials. Method 2017.02 is suitable for the simultaneous determination of arsenic, cadmium, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, and zinc in all major types of commercial fertilizer products by microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy analysis. With recoveries ranging from 92.8 to 103.2% for analytes above the LOQs, improved RSDs, and enhanced efficiency as compared with the previous method, Method 2006.03, the ERP recommended this method for First Action Official MethodsSM Status.

Abstract
The relationship between population intakes of alkaline-earth elements (AEEs) and hypertension risk remains under discussion. Hair AEE concentrations can indicate their intake levels into human body. Thus, we aimed to investigate an association of hair AEE concentrations with hypertension risk, and the potential effect of dietary habit on this association. We recruited 398 housewives [163 subjects with hypertension (case group) and 235 subjects without hypertension (control group)] in Shanxi Province of north China. The scalp hair grown in the recent 2 years of each subject was collected and analyzed for the four concerned AEEs [i.e. calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), and barium (Ba)]. Our study results revealed that median concentrations (μg/g hair) of hair AEEs in the case group were systematically lower than those in control group [i.e. 701 vs. 1271 of Ca, 55.2 vs. 88.3 of Mg, 4.60 vs. 10.4 of Sr, and 1.02 vs. 1.68 of Ba]. Lower levels of the four individual AEEs of hair were associated with an increased presence of hypertension, respectively. Moreover, hair AEE concentrations were all positively correlated with the ingestion frequencies of meat, eggs, fresh vegetables, and fruits, while negatively with that of salted vegetables. A high ingestion frequency of fresh vegetables was associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension with or without adjusting confounders, while salted vegetables revealed a reverse tend. It was concluded that low hair AEEs, as markers of their long-term dietary intake, were associated with the presence of hypertension in a rural Chinese women.

Abstract
A limited single-laboratory validation (SLV) was conducted in the authors' laboratory to investigate the performance of AOAC Official MethodsSM 2011.19 Determination of Chromium (Cr), Selenium (Se), and Molybdenum (Mo) in Infant Formula and Adult Nutritional Products by Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry and 2015.06 Determination of Minerals and Trace Elements in Infant Formula and Adult/Pediatric Nutritional Formula by Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry at analyte levels below the practical LOQs (PLOQs) already published for these Final Action Official Methods. This work was needed to verify that the actual LOQs were below the minimum requirements for minerals in infant formula as given in CODEX STAN 72 (1981). Linearity studies at low levels were conducted as well as the analysis of blanks over multiple days to establish the LOQs (as opposed to PLOQs) for these nutrients. Several placebo matrixes from the AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals (SPIFAN) program were tested over multiple days at two different sample sizes to quantitate the effect of doubling the sample size given in the original publications. The SLV results indicate that both methods can meet the Codex minimum requirements as-is, without modification of the methods, albeit with a relaxation of the stringent precision criteria originally established for these methods by SPIFAN. Precision can be improved by doubling the sample size, but this step is not necessary to use the method for its intended purpose. A concurrent collaborative study of Method 2015.06 showed that the RSDR obtained across eight laboratories for several infant formula placebos containing mineral concentrations between the PLOQ and LOQ were indeed worse than SPIFAN expectations, but reasonable Horwitz ratios (HorRat) were nonetheless obtained for these analytes.

Abstract
Little is known about edaphic selection pressures as drivers of contrasting white spruce ectomycorrhizal fungal community structure and diversity in the Canadian boreal forest. We hypothesized that community composition differs among the four sites sampled-nursery, mining site, forest edge, and natural forest. Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal community structure and diversity was studied at the four locations with soil fertility gradient through morpho-molecular and phylogenetic analyses in relationships with rhizospheric soil chemical properties. 41 different species were identified. Mining site had a significantly different species composition than the surrounding environments. Soil pH and percentage of roots colonized by ECM fungi increased while soil P, N, Fe, C, K, Mg, Al, Ca, and Na contents declined across the soil fertility gradient: nursery → natural forest → forest edge → mining site. Contrary to the preference of acid soils by ECM fungi, a few ecologically adapted to high pH, poor soil chemical fertility, and low organic matter content colonize white spruce roots on the non-acidogenic mining site, allowing natural regeneration of white spruce seedlings. Other ECM fungi are adapted to high fertigation level of commercial nursery. This study clearly shows the contrasting difference in white spruce ectomycorrhizal fungal community structure and diversity driven by edaphic selection pressures.

Abstract
The capability to detect multianalyte ions in their mixed solution is an important advantage of voltammetry with an ionophore-based polymeric membrane against the potentiometric and optical counterparts. This advanced capability is highly attractive for the analysis of physiological ions at millimolar concentrations in biological and biomedical samples. Herein, we report on the comprehensive response mechanisms based on the voltammetric exchange and transfer of millimolar multiions at a thin polymeric membrane, where an ionophore is exhaustively depleted upon the transfer of the most favorable primary ion, I(zI). With a new voltammetric ion-exchange mechanism, the primary ion is exchanged with the secondary favorable ion, J(zJ), at more extreme potentials to transfer a net charge of |zJ|/nJ - |zI|/nI for each ionophore molecule, which forms 1:nI and 1:nJ complexes with the respective ions. Alternatively, an ion-transfer mechanism utilizes the second ionophore that independently transfers the secondary ion without ion exchange. Experimentally, a membrane is doped with a Na(+)- or Li(+)-selective ionophore to detect not only the primary ion, but also the secondary alkaline earth ion, based on the ion-exchange mechanism, where both ions form 1:1 complexes with the ionophores to transfer a net charge of +1. Interestingly, the resultant peak potentials of the secondary divalent ion vary with its sample activity to yield an apparently super-Nernstian slope as predicted theoretically. By contrast, the voltammetric exchange of calcium ion (nI = 3) with lithium ion (nJ = 1) by a Ca(2+)-selective ionophore is thermodynamically unfavorable, thereby requiring a Li(+)-selective ionophore for the ion-transfer mechanism.

Removal of toxic and alkali/alkaline earth metals during co-thermal treatment of two types of MSWI fly ashes in China. WASTE MANAGEMENT (NEW YORK, N.Y.) 2015; 46:287-297. Abstract
This study aims to vaporize heavy metals and alkali/alkaline earth metals from two different types of fly ashes by thermal treatment method. Fly ash from a fluidized bed incinerator (HK fly ash) was mixed with one from a grate incinerator (HS fly ash) in various proportions and thermally treated under different temperatures. The melting of HS fly ash was avoided when treated with HK fly ash. Alkali/alkaline earth metals in HS fly ash served as Cl-donors to promote the vaporization of heavy metals during thermal treatment. With temperature increasing from 800 to 900°C, significant amounts of Cl, Na and K were vaporized. Up to 1000°C in air, less than 3% of Cl and Na and less than 5% of K were retained in ash. Under all conditions, Cd can be vaporized effectively. The vaporization of Pb was mildly improved when treated with HS fly ash, while the effect became less pronounced above 900°C. Alkali/alkaline earth metals can promote Cu vaporization by forming copper chlorides. Comparatively, Zn vaporization was low and only slightly improved by HS fly ash. The low vaporization of Zn could be caused by the formation of Zn2SiO4, ZnFe2O4 and ZnAl2O4. Under all conditions, less than 20% of Cr was vaporized. In a reductive atmosphere, the vaporization of Cd and Pb were as high as that in oxidative atmosphere. However, the vaporization of Zn was accelerated and that of Cu was hindered because the formation of Zn2SiO4, ZnFe2O4 and ZnAl2O4 and copper chloride was depressed in reductive atmosphere.

Abstract
Leaching behaviors of Arsenic (As), Barium (Ba), Calcium (Ca), Cadmium (Cd), Magnesium (Mg), Selenium (Se), and Strontium (Sr) from soil alone, coal fly ash alone, and soil-coal fly ash mixtures, were studied at a pH range of 2-14 via pH-dependent leaching tests. Seven different types of soils and coal fly ashes were tested. Results of this study indicated that Ca, Cd, Mg, and Sr showed cationic leaching pattern while As and Se generally follows an oxyanionic leaching pattern. On the other hand, leaching of Ba presented amphoteric-like leaching pattern but less pH-dependent. In spite of different types and composition of soil and coal fly ash investigated, the study reveals the similarity in leaching behavior as a function of pH for a given element from soil, coal fly ash, and soil-coal fly ash mixtures. The similarity is most likely due to similar controlling mechanisms (e.g., solubility, sorption, and solid-solution formation) and similar controlling factors (e.g., leachate pH and redox conditions). This offers the opportunity to transfer knowledge of coal fly ash that has been extensively characterized and studied to soil stabilized with coal fly ash. It is speculated that unburned carbon in off-specification coal fly ashes may provide sorption sites for Cd resulting in a reduction in concentration of these elements in leachate from soil-coal fly ash mixture. Class C fly ash provides sufficient CaO to initiate the pozzolanic reaction yielding hydrated cement products that oxyanions, including As and Se, can be incorporated into.

Abstract
The concentrations of 22 major and trace elements in livers from rats aging from 5 to 113 weeks old were determined. The rats investigated were the same rats previously reported with respect to 29 elements in bones (femur) and 26 elements in kidneys. The samples were decomposed with high-purity nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Seven elements (Na, Mg, P, K, Ca, Fe and Zn) were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and 15 elements (Mn, Co, Cu, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, Pb and Bi) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) for age variations indicated that the concentrations of many elements, such as Mg, P, K, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sr, Mo and Cd, were almost constant across the ages of the rats with the exception of 5 weeks old (p > 0.05). Arsenic, Pb and Bi showed significant increasing trends, while Na and Co showed decreasing trends (p < 0.01). Selenium showed a decreasing trend except at the initial stage of 5-9 weeks old. Calcium, Rb, Sn, Sb, Cs and Ba showed significant age-related variations, but their patterns were not monotonic. The liver clearly contrasts with the kidneys, in which many elements showed significant age-related variations with increasing trends. The concentration ranges of Mg, P, K, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Mo were controlled within 15% across all ages of rats. The homeostasis of the aforementioned elements may be well established in the liver. The toxic elements, such as Cd, Pb and Bi, showed a narrow concentration range among age-matched rats.

Abstract
Investigating the release characteristics of alkali and alkaline earth metallic species (AAEMs) is of potential interest because of AAEM's possible useful service as catalysts in biomass thermal conversion. In this study, three kinds of typical Chinese biomass were selected to pyrolyse and their chars were subsequently steam gasified in a designed quartz fixed-bed reactor to investigate the release characteristics of alkali and alkaline earth metallic species (AAEMs). The results indicate that 53-76% of alkali metal and 27-40% of alkaline earth metal release in pyrolysis process, as well as 12-34% of alkali metal and 12-16% of alkaline earth metal evaporate in char gasification process, and temperature is not the only factor to impact AAEMs emission. The releasing characteristics of AAEMs during pyrolysis and char gasification process of three kinds of biomass were discussed in this paper.

Abstract
Metals play a very important role in many scientific and environmental fields, and thus their detection and analysis is of great necessity. A simple and very sensitive method has been developed herein for the detection of metals in positive ion mode ESI-MS. Metal ions are positively charged, and as such they can potentially be detected in positive ion mode ESI-MS; however, their small mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio makes them fall in the low-mass region of the mass spectrum, which has the largest background noise. Therefore, their detection can become extremely difficult. A better and well-known way to detect metals by ESI-MS is by chelating them with complexation agents. In this study eleven different metals, Fe(II), Fe(III), Mg(II), Cu(II), Ru(III), Co(II), Ca(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Sn(II), and Ag(I), were paired with two commercially available chelating agents: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS). Since negative ion mode ESI-MS has many disadvantages compared to positive ion mode ESI-MS, it would be very beneficial if these negatively charged complex ions could be detected in the positive mode. Such a method is described in this paper and it is shown to achieve much lower sensitivities. Each of the negatively charged metal complexes is paired with six cationic ion-pairing reagents. The new positively charged ternary complexes are then analyzed by ESI-MS in the positive single ion monitoring (SIM) and single reaction monitoring (SRM) modes. The results clearly revealed that the presence of the cationic reagents significantly improved the sensitivity for these analytes, often by several orders of magnitude. This novel method developed herein for the detection of metals improved the limits of detection (LODs) significantly when compared to negative ion mode ESI-MS and shows great potential in future trace studies of these and many other species.

Abstract
In plants, Cd causes perturbation of root metal uptake and is known to interfere with the metal translocation to the shoot. The most significant effect is the strongly reduced transport of Fe. Fe accumulation in roots under Cd stress revealed that it is not the Fe acquisition but the Fe loading to xylem elements that is blocked by Cd, which can be a result of competition between Fe and Cd for the transporters. However, in animal cells as well as in plant stomata guard cells, Cd was shown to move through Ca channels. To clarify whether the perturbation of metal translocation/xylem loading caused by Cd show any regularity, translocation ability was tested by the determination of the metal content in leaves of hydroponically cultured (¼ Hoagland nutrient solution, Fe source: 10 μM Fe((III))-citrate) poplar plants grown for three weeks with or without 10 μM Cd(NO₃)₂ treatment. Metals could be classified into two groups according to the behavior of their translocation under Cd treatment: alkaline earth metals (except Mg), Zn and Mn were influenced similarly to Ca, but other transition metals (together with alkali metals and Al) behaved like the Fe. Based on the translocation pattern, Cd seems to inhibit the transport of Ca-like metals competitively, but a different type of inhibition is exerted on the transition metal transport, with which Cd can share a common translocation system. The strongly decreased translocation of chelator-dependent transition metals may indicate Cd related disturbances in signalling pathways and gene expression of xylem transporters or chelators.

Abstract
Honey is the most popular bee product used by man, with nutritional and medicinal purposes. Its great diversity is attributed to numerous factors (bee type, visited flora, environment, and management). The quality of honey is controlled with routine parameters (free acidity, diastase activity, reducing sugars, ash, water, hydroxymethyfurfural, and sucrose contents). Besides the biochemical quality control, a functional profile is also important for pharmacological applications. In this work, bioactive indicators such as the antioxidant activity, flavonoid and polyphenol contents were evaluated by spectrophotometry, and correlated to the content of six bioelements (Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Zn) measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy, tandem FI-FAAS, in 14 unifloral Czech honeys. The antioxidant activity was 43.13 +/- 53.72 micromoles TEAC/100 g honey. The flavonoid content was 5.18 +/- 4.19 mg QE/100 g, and the polyphenol content was 45.38 +/- 27.20 mg GAE/100 g. Buckwheat honey showed the highest values for these indicators of bioactivity, the acacia honeys the lowest, and the rest of the honeys were comprised between both of them. Honey content of bioelements was 138.19 +/- 55.57 ppm Ca (min 77.11-max 261.65), 0.33 +/- 0.41 ppm Cu (min 0.00-max 1.37), 2.95 +/- 1.10 ppm Fe (min 1.34-max 5.36), 35.08 +/- 29.59 ppm Mg (min 8.76-128.06), 4.93 +/- 3.99 ppm Mn (min 0.34-max 11.31), 1.07 +/- 0.56 ppm Zn (min 0.49-max 2.52). The antioxidant activity of honey was significantly correlated to its content of cupper, iron, magnesium, manganese and zinc, but was not correlated to calcium.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to examine the inter-relationship between elements in human hair depending on gender. In the whole population, the following groups of correlated elements were identified: alkaline earth metals (Ba, Ca, Mg, Sr), major microelements (Cu, Mn, Si, Zn) and La, Ti. In the subpopulation of males, the (Ag, Al, As, Fe) group was additionally included, whereas in the group of females (Ag, Al, Fe, Zr) was included. The group of alkali metals (Li, Na, K) and P was particularly visible in the group of males. In the group of females correlations among (Al, Co, Fe, K, Ti) were stronger than in males. In both sexes correlations between Mo, B and V (in females additionally Bi was present) and Bi-Co were found. Only in hair of males (Cd, Fe, Mn) and (Cu, Na, P) were detected, and the group of (As, Co, Cr, Fe, K, Ti) was detected only in females.

Abstract
Two of the main items from which to retrieve data in anthropology are teeth and bones. Identification of trace elements in their composition allows valuable information to be obtained about alimentary habits and community life conditions of groups and individuals. Conventional methods used to determine the presence of trace elements require sample preparation, with partial or total destruction of the pieces, which in most cases are unique. In this work we show the possibilities of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as a nearly nondestructive tool in anthropology and paleontology for the measurement of the presence and distribution of trace elements in teeth. We applied LIBS to the determination of strontium and magnesium in dentin and enamel of Neolithic, middle age, and modern Homo sapiens teeth. Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca distribution maps of dentin and enamel in modern teeth were created using the data obtained. Ablation threshold fluences of dentin and enamel were also measured using the photoacoustic signal induced by laser ablation. Significant variations were found in the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios in the tooth dental tissue and between the teeth of the groups and individuals studied. These results can be useful for evolutionary anthropology studies as they can provide information regarding early nutrition, seasonality, and residential mobility.

Abstract
A simple and effective method is presented for the separation and preconcentration of Th(IV), Ti(IV), Fe(III), Pb(II) and Cr(III) by solid phase extraction on 2-nitroso-1-naphthol impregnated MCI GEL CHP20P resin prior to their inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometric determinations. The influence of analytical parameters including pH of the aqueous solution, flow rates of sample and eluent solutions and sample volume on the quantitative recoveries of analyte ions was investigated. Matrix effects caused by the presence of alkali, earth alkali and some metal ions in the analyzed solutions were investigated. The presented solid phase extraction method was applied to BCR-144R Sewage Sludge (domestic origin), BCR-141R Calcareous Loam Soil, NIST 1568a Rice Flour and NIST 1577b Bovine Liver certified reference materials (CRMs) for the determination of analyte ions and the results were in good agreement with the certified values. The separation procedure presented was also applied to the various natural water samples collected from Turkey with satisfactory results.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare how conventional stem harvesting (CH) and whole-tree harvesting (WTH) in the first, and in some cases also in the second, thinning affect the needle nutrient status of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands in Finland. A series of 12 long-term field experiments was studied. The experiments were established during 1978-86. The effects of logging residue removal after thinnings on the needle nutrient concentrations were generally minor and without any overall trends, but there were differences between experiments. Trees tend to maintain their current needle nutrient concentrations at the same level by re-utilizing the nutrients stored in the older tissues and by changing C allocation in the whole tree. Thus, needle analysis should be combined with stem growth data in order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of WTH on the nutrient status of trees.

Abstract
To elucidate compositional changes of the prostate with aging, the authors investigated age-related changes of elements in the prostates and the relationships among their elements using Japanese and Thai. After ordinary dissections by students at Nara Medical University and Chiang Mai University were finished, the prostates were resected from the subjects. Fifty-seven Japanese subjects ranged in age from 65 to 101 years (average age = 82.5 +/- 7.8 years), whereas 13 Thai subjects ranged in age from 43 to 86 years (average age = 67.9 +/- 11.9 years). After ashing with nitric acid and perchloric acid, element contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. It was found that although there were no significant correlations between age and seven element contents, such as Ca, P, S, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Na, in the prostates of Japanese, high contents of Ca (>5 mg/g) and P (>4 mg/g) were contained in one fourth of the prostates of Japanese over 70 years of age. In the prostates of Thai, a significant direct correlation was found between age and Ca content, but it was not found between age and the other element contents, such as P, S, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Na. Regarding the relationships among their elements, extremely significant direct correlations were found among the contents of Ca, P, Mg, Zn, and Na in the prostates of Japanese. In the prostates of Thai, significant direct correlations were found among the contents of Ca, Mg, and Zn, but no significant correlations were found between Ca and P contents and between P and Mg contents. Regarding the relationships among their elements, there were differences between the prostates of Japanese and Thai. To examine whether element contents changed in prostatic hypertrophy, the transverse width of the Japanese prostates was measured. No significant correlations were found between the transverse width and element contents, such as Ca, P, S, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Na, in the Japanese prostates. Therefore, it is unlikely that the increase of elements results in prostatic hypertrophy.

Abstract
A study was conducted in southern Ethiopia to evaluate the nutrient status on smallholder farms with respect to land use class (garden, grassland, and outfield) and slope position (upper, middle, and lower). Soil physical and chemical properties were quantified using soil samples collected at two depths (0-15 and 15-30 cm). Available phosphorous was significantly different among the three land use classes. However, organic carbon and total nitrogen were lower in the outfield compared to the garden and grass land but not significantly different. The lower than expected nutrient status of the garden and grassland, which receive almost all available organic supplements, was attributed to the overall low availability of these inputs. Similarly, pH and cation exchange capacity were not significantly different among the different land use classes. However, the sum of the exchangeable cations was significantly higher in the garden compared to the outfields. Comparison at landscape level revealed that the sand fraction was significantly greater, whereas the silt fractions were significantly smaller, on the lower slopes relative to the middle slopes. Moreover, the organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, Ca, and Mg values were significantly less on lower slopes than upper and middle slopes. Perhaps this is because of leaching and the effect of deposition of coarser sediments from the prevailing gully system. Overall, the fertility of the soil was adequate for supporting smallholder farming, but consideration must be given to reducing pressure on the land resources, addressing erosion problems, and providing a line of credit for purchasing inputs.

Abstract
The fingerprints for most of Chinese medicines based on their organic compositions have been well established. Nevertheless, there are very few known fingerprints which are based on inorganic elements. In order to identify the Da Huo Luo Dan and its efficiency from other Chinese medicines, the authors attempted to set up a fingerprint which could be determined by the measurement of inorganic elements in Da Huo Luo Dan and other Chinese medicines. In the present study, the authors first employed 28 batches of Da Huo Luo Dan produced by Zhang-Shu Pharmatheutical Company in Jiang Xi Province to screen 12 kinds of inorganic elements measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer and established the atomic absorption fingerprints. Secondly, the authors tried to identify Da Huo Luo Dan and other Chinese medicines by using the similarly analysis of vectors and the statistical analysis of compositional data. The result showed that the methods the authors used here were predictable to tell the efficiency of Da Huo Luo Dan from others. The authors' study also proves that establishment of standard for quality control by analysis of inorganic elements in Chinese medicines is feasible. The present study provides a new idea and a new technique that serve for the establishment of industrial standards for analysis of inorganic elements fingerprint to explore the effects of Chinese medicines.

Abstract
The dry leaves of Aloe barbadensis Miller irrigated with seawater were dissolved in nitric acid and then oxygenated by perchloric acid. Nine kinds of trace elements in the samples were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, zinc, iron, copper and lead, with added lanthanum chloride as releaser to eliminate the interference of co-existent ions. The recoveries were 96.58%-104.31%, and the relative standard deviations of sample determination (10 times) were less than 2%. This method is simple, sensitive and rapid with satisfactory results and good reproducibility. The results indicated that there were rich Ca, Mg, K and Na, and moderate Mn, Zn and Fe elements in the Aloe barbadensis Miller irrigated with seawater. However, the concentrations of Cu and Pb were low. Therefore, Aloe barbadensis Miller irrigated with seawater has officinal and economic values. These results provide data for further research on Aloe barbadensis Miller irrigated with seawater.

Abstract
Microwave digestion technique was used in the decomposition of radix Paeoniae alba samples of different growing area, different growing time and before and after processing, and the contents of K, Ca, Na, Mg, Zn and Fe were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The results of the determination show that radix Paeoniae alba samples are rich in the trace elements. The RSDs of these elements were lower than 4%, and the recovery ratio ranged between 99% and 113%. The results revealed that the analytic method is sensitive and precise. The pattern recognition based on the principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the measured trace elements of different radix Paeoniae alba samples. The PCA was useful in the classification of radix Paeoniae alba. This paper provides scientific basis for deeply studying the relation between the trace elements and the drug effect of radix Paeoniae alba.

Abstract
In the present paper, samples were digested by high pressure digestion pots, reducing the loss of trace elements during the digestion process. The contents of trace elements in edible fungi such as Ca, Na, K, Mg, Mn, Ba, Fe, Co, Ge and Cu were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The relative standard deviation with high pressure digestion pots was 0.160-2.860, and that with wet method was 0.33%-3.49%, so it could be seen that the measurement precisions of the two methods were good, and the former was better. The measurement results with the two methods were checked by t-test, and the values in the range of 0.002 4-2.473 were lower than t(0.99, 9) (3.25). The measurement results showed that the two methods had no obvious differences, namely no system errors occurred. The recovery rates with high pressure digestion pots were in the range of 96.6% -103%. The method of high pressure digestion pots was suitable for the determination of trace elements in edible fungi with the advantages of being simple, rapid, sensitive, stable and accurate etc., and the results were satisfactory.

Abstract
The eight trace elements in Tricholoma giganteum Massee, including K, Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu, were determined simultaneously by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The relative standard deviation of the method is 0.1%-2.2%, and the recovery is 98.1%-106.4%. The analytical results were satisfactory. The results showed that some elements essential to human such as Zn, K, Ca, Mg and Mn in Tricholoma giganteum Massee are abundant, implying that the nutritive value of Tricholoma giganteum Massee is high.

Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis has recently attracted considerable attention as a promising analytical technique for metal ion separations. Significant advances in various auxiliary separation principles have opened new application areas for capillary electrophoresis in the analysis of metal species. These advances are mainly due to complexation, ion pairing, solvation and micellization interactions between metal analytes and electrolyte additives, which alter the separation selectivity in a broad range. Likewise, many separation studies on metal ions have been concentrated on the use of pre-electrophoresis derivatization methodology. Approaches suitable for improvement of selectivity for different metal species including metal cations, metal complexes, metal oxoanions and organometallic compounds are discussed, with special attention paid to the related electrophoretic system variables using illustrative examples.

Abstract
Ceramic and glass are some of the more recent engineering materials and those that are most resistant to environmental conditions. They belong to advanced materials in that they are being developed for the aerospace and electronics industries. In the last decade, a new class of ceramic materials has been the focus of particular attention. The materials were produced with natural, renewable resources (wood or wood-based products). In this work, we have synthesised a new biomorphic ceramic material from oak wood and Si infiltration. After the material characterization, we have optimized the dissolution of the sample by acid attack in an oven under microwave irradiation. Experimental designs were used as a multivariate strategy for the evaluation of the effects of varying several variables at the same time. The optimization was performed in two steps using factorial design for preliminary evaluation and a Draper-Lin design for determination of the critical experimental conditions. Five variables (time, power, volume of HNO3, volume H2SO4 and volume of HF) were considered as factors and as a response the concentration of different metal ions in the optimization process. Interactions between analytical factors and their optimal levels were investigated using a Draper-Lin design.

Abstract
Five samples of spirulina from different producing areas were analyzed and characterized with X-ray fluorescence analysis. The contents of K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn and Mn in spinrulina samples from different producing areas were determined. The results show that spinrulinas are rich in microelements that human body needs. The spectra of main elements of spirulina from different producing areas are similar, but the content of each elements is different. The content of K is 5.00% averagely, the highest in the five samples, the content of Na is 0.352%, and the ratio of Na/K is 0.070 on average. The relationship between K, Na/K and medical care efficiency was studied. Lesser value of Na/K is helpful to hypertension patients. It was suggested that hypertension patients should take in less Na, but more K. This can help prevent and cure hypertension. The method proves to be simple, rapid, accurate, and highly sensitive, and can be used for simultaneous multielement determination. The authors' study provides a new scientific foundation for further study and general application of spirulina.

Abstract
Spatial variability of salinity and alkalinity is important for site-specific management since they are the most important factors influencing soil quality and agricultural production. The objectives of this study were to analyze spatial variability in salinity and alkalinity and some soil properties affecting salinity and alkalinity, using classical statistics and geostatistical methods, in an irrigated field with low-quality irrigation water diverted from drainage canals. A field of 5 da was divided into 10 m x 10 m grids (5 lines in the east-west direction and 10 lines in the north-south direction). The soil samples were collected from three depths (0-30, 30-60 and 60-90 cm) at each grid corner. The variation coefficients of OM and sand contents were higher than other soil properties. OM had the maximum variability, with a mean of 1.63% at 0-30 cm depth and 0.71% at 30-60 cm depth. Significant correlations occurred between ESP, EC and each of Ca, Mg, K and CaCO(3) contents of the soils (p<0.01). Experimental semivariograms were fitted to spherical and gaussian models. All geostatistical range values were greater than 36 m. The soil properties had spatial variability at small distances at 60-90 cm depth. EC was variable within short distances at 30-60 cm depth. The nugget effect of ESP increased with soil depth. Kriged contour maps revealed that soils had a salinisation and alkalisation tendency at 60-90 cm depth based on spatial variance structure of the EC and ESP values. Spatial variability in EC and ESP can depend on ground water level, quality of irrigation water, and textural differences.

Abstract
Trace elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, K, Ba, P, Sr, Cd, V, Cr, Ni, Pb and Co) concentrations in the drinking water of KBD-affected and non-affected areas were measured using ICP-AES. The RSD of this method was between 0.80% and 2.83%, and the analytical results of the reference samples were consistent with the certified values. The method was simple and accurate. The results indicated that there is an obvious difference in trace elements concentrations between KBD-affected areas and non-afffected areas. The results provided a scientific theoretical basis to improve the conditions of drinking water in KBD-affected areas in Tibet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effects of evaporation and pasteurization of human milk on its biochemical and immunological composition and on its osmolarity. METHODS The samples of mature human milk were categorized into four study groups: in natura human milk, pasteurized human milk, human milk evaporated at 70% of the baseline volume and human milk pasteurized and evaporated at 70%, with 12 different samples of milk in each group. The samples were used to determine the concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, protein, fat, lactose, immunoglobulin A and osmolarity. RESULTS The pasteurization of human milk did not show statistically significant changes in the concentration of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, protein, fat, lactose, or in osmolarity; however, it showed remarkable reduction in the mean concentration of immunoglobulin A. Evaporation had a mean increase of 38% in the concentration of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, protein, fat and lactose and mean reduction of 45% in the concentration of immunoglobulin A, without significant change in osmolarity in unprocessed milk. CONCLUSION By evaporation at 70% of the baseline value of human milk, it is possible to obtain human milk that meets the nutritional requirements recommended for preterm infants, except for calcium and phosphorus.

Abstract
Macronutrients (P, S, K, Na, Mg, Ca), heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cd) and Al concentrations as well as values of Ca/Al in the tip, middle, base sections and sheaths of current year and previous year needles of Pinus massoniana from Xiqiao Mountain were analyzed and the distribution patterns of those elements were compared. The results indicated that many elements were unevenly distributed among the different components of needles. Possible deficiency of P, K, Ca, Mn and Al toxicity occurred in needles under air pollution. Heavy metals may threaten the health of Masson pine. Needle sheaths were good places to look for particulate pollutants, in this case including Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd and Al.

Abstract
Biogeochemistry is a powerful tool for dietary reconstruction, and mixing equations can be used to quantify the contribution of multiple sources to an individual's diet. The goals of this paper are: 1) to generalize the inverse method to dietary mixtures; and 2) to reconstruct the diet of the Saint-Césaire Neanderthal using Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca data of the mineral fraction of bone (hydroxylapatite), and with published delta13C and delta15N data of the associated organic fraction of bone (collagen). A new method is proposed to calculate the maximum diagenetic contribution of the Sr/Ba ratio, assuming that the soil soluble fraction is the diagenetic end-member and, for a given fraction of diagenesis, allows the restoration of the original Sr/Ba ratio. Considering the Saint-Césaire Châtelperronian mammalian assemblage as the meat source, and on the basis of available Sr, Ba, and Ca contents of plants, the results indicate that the percentage of plants in the Neanderthal's diet must have been close to zero for realistic Sr and Ba impoverishment between diet and hydroxylapatite. Contrary to previous studies, it is shown that fish could constitute a significant proportion (30%) of the diet of the Saint-Césaire Neanderthal. However, this mass balance solution is not supported by the zooarchaeological data. When the entire faunal assemblage is considered as the dietary source, the calculation shows that bovids (except reindeer) represent the greatest percentage of consumed meat (58%), followed by horses/rhinoceros (22%), reindeer (13%), and mammoths (7%). These respective percentages are in close accordance with zooarchaeological records, suggesting that the faunal assemblage associated with the Neanderthal of Saint-Césaire reliably reflects what he ate during the last few years of his life. In behavioral terms, this result supports the hypothesis that this Neanderthal carried the foodstuffs back to the Saint-Césaire shelter before their consumption.

Abstract
The abnormalities of metallochemical reactions may contribute to the pathogenesis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In the present work, an investigation of the elemental composition of the gray matter, nerve cells and white matter from spinal cord tissues representing three ALS cases and five non-ALS controls was performed. This was done with the use of the synchrotron microbeam X-ray fluorescence technique (micro-SRXRF). The following elements were detected in the tissue sections: P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn and Br. A higher accumulation of Cl, K, Ca, Zn and Br was observed in the nerve cell bodies than in the surrounding tissue. Contrary to all other elements, Zn accumulation was lower in the white matter areas than in the gray matter ones. The results of quantitative analysis showed that there were no general abnormalities in the elemental accumulation between the ALS and the control group. However, for individual ALS cases such abnormalities were observed for the nerve cells. We also demonstrated differences in the elemental accumulation between the analyzed ALS cases.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was undertaken to compare calcium, magnesium, fluoride, and phosphorus content in antlers and skull bones of roe deer in relation to their age and habitat. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was done in 22 samples originating from two Forestry Districts of West Pomerania. The study population was divided into two age groups: young animals (aged 1-2 years) and mature animals (aged 4-8 years). Calcium and magnesium was measured with atomic absorption spectrometry, phosphorus with a spectrophotometric method, and fluoride with an ion-selective electrode. CONCLUSIONS Statistical analysis demonstrated differences in the content of the elements depending on age and environmental pollution. Correlations between the content of elements in skull bones and antlers were found.

Abstract
Changes in trace elements of the sino-atrial (SA) node with aging was investigated using 24 hearts of the Japanese and rhesus monkeys of ages ranging from 27 d to 30 yr. With aging, sympathetic activity decreases and SA nodal function deteriorates. The SA nodal tissue was removed from the anatomical position and was confirmed by means of histological observation. The elements, such as Ca, P, S, Mg, Na, Fe, and Zn, were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Advancing age never increased the contents of the trace elements, but decreased them. The correlation coefficients for the age-dependent attenuations were -0.561 (n = 24, p < 0.01) in Ca and -0.482 (n = 24, p < 0.05) in P. The correlations for the attenuations induced by other trace elements were not significant. Furthermore, close relationships of the elements between Ca and P, S, Zn, or Na contents, between P and Zn or Na contents, and between Zn and Na contents were observed. These results indicate that the elements in the monkey SA node are attenuated with an increase in age, presumably suggesting the age-related suppression of cardiac functions as a result of the histological alterations of the SA nodal cells.

The relative standard deviation of the method is 0.07%-2.31%, and the recovery is 97.0%-107.0%. The analytical results were satisfactory. The results showed that there were comparatively rich metal elements in the pagoda flower. Proportions of the twelve elements are in the order that K > Ca > Mg > Na > Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Co > Pb > Cr > Cd. It implied that the nutritive value of the pagoda flower is high.

Abstract
Laser induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) has been applied to analyse and identify elemental constituents of urinary calculi. Measurements on seven different urinary stone samples were conducted and the concentrations of some key elemental species were estimated. The elements detected with the present system were: Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Samarium, Potassium and Lead. Absolute concentrations of the species were derived from pre-calibration of the system for each element. Their concentrations were found to be widely different in different samples. It was observed that the samples containing a significant amount of lead have large proportion of calcium. It has been established that LIPS would allow real time clinic measurements of elemental contents and the concentrations in the biomaterials without sample preparation. The technique has the potential for routine clinic applications in urological disorder diagnosis.

New technology is reported here for the synthesis of an effective weak acid-cation exchanger for ion chromatography. Monodisperse macroporous poly(ethylvinylbenzene-co-divinylbezene) (PEVB-DVB) beads of 5 microm diameter were prepared by a two-step swelling and polymerization method. Then carboxyl groups were introduced by polymerization of maleic anhydride with unreacted vinyl groups on the resin beads, followed by hydrolysis of the maleic anhydride groups. A column packed with the carboxylate beads was used to separate alkali and alkaline earth metal ions in a single isocratic run. Separations were found to be better than those with similar resin particles that are simply coated with maleic acid. The columns containing the new particles were 100% compatible with solvents commonly used for HPLC. Additionally, the prepared column was stable and could be used for a long time in a wide range of pH. The column gave good resolution, low detection limits and good repeatability for the separation of common cations. Satisfactory results were also obtained for separations of organic amines and of common cations in rainwater.

Abstract
In the Mekong River delta and its associated coastal zone trace elements concentrations (Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb) were measured in the dissolved phase (DP) during dry (March 1997) and wet (October 1997) seasons. As, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Al were also measured in suspended matter (SM) and total and organic carbon, trace elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and macro elements in superficial sediments (S). Trace metal concentrations in DP and SM during the contrasting hydrological conditions were generally found within the range observed for uncontaminated environment. The average DP concentrations (nM) in the river for March and October are: Cd 0.03 and 0.09, Cu 15 and 14, Ni 7.8 and 8.4, Pb 0.51 and 0.50, respectively. In general there is no significant difference between the concentrations observed during dry and wet season. The evolution of the DP trace metal concentration in the surface water within the salinity gradient suggests no noticeable exchange between the particulate and dissolved phase. This result is in good agreement with those observed in most plume structures studied so far. The average concentrations in the SM (microg/g) (March, October) at the river end-member are: As (24; 11), Co (17; 9), Cr (49; 29), Ni (32; 18), Pb (42; 19) and Al (113,000; 67,000), respectively. All trace elements show higher concentrations in March than in October, with an average increase of two times. This is essentially related to grain size effect since smaller particles were supplied during dry season. These differences are not reflected in the mixing zone, which integrates the seasonal variations. The concentration of major elements (C total, C organic, Si, Al, Ca, K, Fe, Mg, Ti), trace elements (Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Mn, Cr, Cd, Hg) in superficial sediments, show similar values during the two seasons and does not show any important variation with depth, indicating either a very fast sedimentation rate and/or the absence of any significant contamination.

Abstract
A chemiluminescence (CL) signal was observed when alkaline earth metal ion solution, Mg2+ or Ca2+ or Ba2+, was injected into a reaction mixture of fluorescein and potassium permanganate. A possible CL mechanism is proposed based upon the CL, fluorescence and UV-visible spectra. Furthermore, the feasibility of the application of these reactions to the analysis of these alkaline earth metal ions was evaluated and the analytical parameters of the methods were determined.

Abstract
An international programme of work is currently under way to develop methods for calculating doses to infants from ingestion of radionuclides present in mothers' milk. This paper considers the special case of the alkaline earth elements. Models have been developed for 45Ca, 90Sr and 226Ra and the sensitivity of results to various changes in parameter values is discussed. A complication when calculating doses from intakes of radium is that the International Commission on Radiological Protection has previously recommended that doses from decay products of radium should be calculated using element-specific biokinetic models (so-called independent biokinetics). An extension of this method to the models for breastfeeding is proposed. Preliminary estimates of the doses received by the infant for a number of maternal intake scenarios show that doses to the infant can exceed the corresponding adult dose, such as for 45Ca (ratio = 3.1) while, in other cases such as 90Sr, the infant dose can be a significant fraction of the adult dose.

Abstract
The aim of this study was a preliminary assessment of a possible role of human saliva in the diagnosis of some physiological and pathological changes in oral and body functions. Reliable procedures for collection and analysis of samples were established in order to assess total concentrations of Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, and Hg in whole unstimulated saliva. Possible relationships between element concentrations and sex, age, smoking, illness conditions, or side effects resulting from the use of drugs were investigated. The effects of stimulated or unstimulated collection procedures, dental prosthesis, and amalgam fillings were also evaluated. Total concentrations of major cations and Hg in whole saliva from 33 healthy adults living in the Siena district showed a coefficient of variation ranging from 11% (P) to 53% (Na) and average values were in the same range of those previously reported for unstimulated saliva. Healthy males had significantly higher concentrations of K, Na, P, and Na/K, Na/Ca, Na/Mg, and Na/P values than females. Age, smoking, dental prosthesis, and amalgam fillings had no significant effects on the concentrations of major elements. On the contrary, concentrations of Hg were positively correlated to the number of amalgam fillings and increased at a rate of about 1.9 microg/L for each filling. No correlations were found between Hg concentrations and those of major elements. Comparisons with literature data showed a different composition (particularly for Na and Hg concentrations) between unstimulated and stimulated saliva. Samples from patients affected by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis had significantly higher concentrations of K and the maximum value was measured in a patient affected by acute pulmonary edema. This increase was likely the result of pharmacological treatments with tricyclic antidepressants and/or saline solutions. Data reported in this study, although preliminary, contribute to the assessment of levels of major cations (some of them very little investigated) and Hg in whole unstimulated human saliva and provides consistent support for further research on the possible use of this easy accessible matrix as a diagnostic tool of body function changes.
