Abstract
Pea starch films were produced with various plasticizers (glucose, fructose, mannose, sorbitol, and glycerol). Effects of plasticizer content (4.34 to 10.87 mmol/g of dry starch) and storage relative humidity (RH) (11.3% to 75.4%) on moisture content (MC), tensile strength (TS), elongation (E), modulus of elasticity (EM), and water vapor permeability (WVP) were evaluated using response surface methodology. MC was influenced strongly by RH. Glycerol-plasticized films had the highest MC, indicating that water molecules played a more important role in plasticizing starch films. Monosaccharide-plasticized films and polyol-plasticized films had similar TS values. However, monosaccharide-plasticized films had higher E values and lower EM values than polyol-plasticized films, meaning monosaccharides had better efficiency in plasticizing starch films. Recrystallization happened in glucose- and sorbitol-plasticized films when they were stored in high RH. Sorption isotherm studies showed the similar adsorption and desorption profiles for all 3 monosaccharide-plasticized films and a hysteresis. The Flory-Huggius model fitted experimental data best for starch films, while the BET model fitted the data marginally.

Abstract
Light information reaches the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) through a subpopulation of retinal ganglion cells that utilize glutamate as a neurotransmitter. A variety of evidence suggests that the release of glutamate then activates N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors within the SCN and triggers a signaling cascade that ultimately leads to phase shifts in the circadian system. In this study, we first sought to explore the role of the NR2B subunit in mediating the effects of light on the circadian system of hamsters and mice. We found that localized microinjection of the NR2B subunit antagonist ifenprodil into the SCN region reduces the magnitude of light-induced phase shifts of the circadian rhythm in wheel-running activity. Next, we found that the NR2B message and levels of phospho-NR2B vary with time of day in SCN tissue using semiquantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis, respectively. Functionally, we found that blocking the NR2B subunit with ifenprodil significantly reduced the magnitude of NMDA currents recorded in SCN neurons. Ifenprodil also significantly reduced the magnitude of NMDA-induced Ca2+ changes in SCN cells. Together, these results demonstrate that the NR2B subunit is an important component of NMDA receptor-mediated responses within SCN neurons and that this subunit contributes to light-induced phase shifts of the mammalian circadian system.

Abstract
AIMS Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation is closely associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. We have investigated the appropriate VAT cut-off values for predicting metabolic risk factors in the Korean population. METHODS We assessed 276 men and 540 women aged 17-69 years who were undergoing regular health examinations. Anthropometry, metabolic risk factors and VAT area determined by computed tomography were measured. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to define VAT cut-off points for metabolic risk factors. RESULTS Based on the first quintile of VAT, the odds ratios for having metabolic risk factors increased significantly with each VAT quintile in both men and women. Using ROC analysis, the appropriate VAT cut-offs for metabolic risk factors were 100 cm(2) in men and 70 cm(2) in women. Regression lines indicated that, in men, a VAT of 100 cm(2) corresponded to a waist circumference of 88.1 cm and a body mass index (BMI) of 24.9 kg/m(2); in women, a VAT of 70 cm(2) corresponded to a waist circumference of 84.0 cm and a BMI of 25.1 kg/m(2). CONCLUSION VAT cut-offs of 100 cm(2) in men and 70 cm(2) in women are useful for defining visceral obesity in Korean subjects. These VAT cut-offs were validated by the ethnic-specific cut-offs for waist circumference and BMI for Korean individuals.

Abstract
Pea starch, which has inherently good gel strength, was used as the source material for manufacturing a biodegradable and bioactive packaging material. Extrudates containing 99% pea starch and 1% lysozyme were produced under various extrusion conditions (high and low shear screw configurations, 30% to 40% moisture contents, 70 to 150 degrees C die temperatures). The physical and mechanical properties of the extrudates were determined through various expansion indices, piece and cell wall solid density, compression, and 3-point bending tests. The expansion of extrudates increased with an increase in die temperature, whereas increasing moisture content had the opposite effect. Extrudate densities decreased as extrusion temperature increased, whereas lower moisture content in the extrudate dough decreased extrudate densities. The elastic modulus and fracture strengths were highly correlated in a power-law fashion to relative density, showing that the mechanical properties of extrudates were dependent on solid density and foam structure. Up to 48% of the initial lysozyme activity was recovered from the extruded pea starch matrix. The lysozyme released from extrudates showed an inhibition zone against Brochotrix thermosphacta B2. Extruded pea starch matrix containing lysozyme has potential application as an edible and biodegradable packaging material with antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
Green tea is a popular worldwide beverage, and its potential beneficial effects such as anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties are believed to be mediated by epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major constituent of polyphenols. Recently, it was reported that EGCG might be useful in the prevention or treatment of androgenetic alopecia by selectively inhibiting 5alpha-reductase activity. However, no report has been issued to date on the effect of EGCG on human hair growth. This study was undertaken to measure the effect of EGCG on hair growth in vitro and to investigate its effect on human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) in vivo and in vitro. EGCG promoted hair growth in hair follicles ex vivo culture and the proliferation of cultured DPCs. The growth stimulation of DPCs by EGCG in vitro may be mediated through the upregulations of phosphorylated Erk and Akt and by an increase in the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax ratio. Similar results were also obtained in in vivo dermal papillae of human scalps. Thus, we suggest that EGCG stimulates human hair growth through these dual proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects on DPCs.

Abstract
The effect of incorporating trisodium phosphate (TSP) in pea starch (PS) and acidified sodium chlorite (ASC) in calcium alginate upon the antimicrobial activity of TSP and ASC was studied against a 3-strain cocktail of Salmonella inoculated on chicken skin. The influence of polymer coating concentration on skin pH, coating-skin adhesion, and coating absorption upon antimicrobial performance were investigated. Aqueous solutions of 0.5 to 4.8% (wt/vol) PS were prepared with 10% (wt/vol) TSP (PS + TSP coating), and alginate + ASC coatings contained 1% (wt/vol) calcium chloride in 1,200 ppm of ASC mixed with an aqueous solution of 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5% (wt/vol) sodium alginate. Coating drops (10 microL) were placed on chicken skin thighs, and the angle formed by the tangent of the liquid surface at the skin interface (contact angle) was measured using a digital camera to assess coating-skin adhesion. Excised skins were mounted in a ring holder, and 5 mL of the coatings was applied to the skin. Weight changes in the skins that were related to coating absorptiveness were recorded. The TSP dissolved in 3.5% PS and ASC in 1% alginate reduced Salmonella by 1.6 log cfu/g and 1.4 log cfu/g, respectively, within 24 h. These reductions were significantly greater than those caused by TSP or ASC alone in water for up to 120 h. In coatings, TSP and ASC caused significant elevation or reduction of skin surface pH for up to 120 h, respectively. The TSP destabilized PS with 88% of the coating having dripped from the skin 1 h later. Coatings with 0.5% PS were absorbed quickly by the skin and had high skin adhesion, whereas those with >3.5% PS had low skin adhesion and slow absorption. Alginate coatings with or without ASC were stable, and about 50% of the coating weight was retained at 120 h. The latter coatings appeared to have low absorptiveness because the skin gained approximately 1.0% of its weight within 60 min following application. These findings indicate that effects of the agents in coatings on skin pH, the extent of coating adhesion, and absorption may contribute to overall antimicrobial behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a major international health problem. Limited information is available about the prevalence of MetS in Asia, especially in Korea. OBJECTIVE To examine the prevalence and trends of MetS in a Korean population. In addition, we investigated the risk factors associated with MetS. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS A total of 7445 participants aged >/=20 years from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHNS) 1998 and 5964 participants from the KNHNS 2001 were included in this analysis. The KNHNS is a cross-sectional health survey of a nationally representative sample of the Korean population. The prevalence of MetS was determined using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria and the Asia-Pacific criteria for obesity based on waist circumference (APC-WC). RESULTS Using the ATP III criteria, the age-adjusted prevalence of MetS among Korean adults was 15.7% (13.7% male, 17.8% female) in 1998 and 14.4% (13.0% male, 16.2% female) in 2001. Using the APC-WC criteria, the prevalence was 21.6% (19.4% male, 23.9% female) in 1998 and 21.4% (20.1% male, 23.4% female) in 2001. Of the five MetS components, increasing trends were found between 1998 and 2001 in the prevalence of hypertriglyceridaemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and central obesity for both men and women. Age, sex, body mass index and a family history of diabetes were associated with MetS. CONCLUSIONS These results from a representative sample show that MetS is common in Korean adults. A systemic public health programme is required to prevent future increases in diabetes and cardiovascular complications.

Abstract
The present study investigated the promoting effect of oxysterol 7-ketocholesterol against the cytotoxicity of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP(+)) in differentiated PC12 cells. 7-Ketocholesterol significantly enhanced the MPP(+)-induced nuclear damage, decrease in the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, cytosolic accumulation of cytochrome c, activation of caspase-3, increase in the formation of reactive oxygen species and depletion of GSH. N-Acetylcysteine, ascorbate, trolox, carboxy-PTIO and Mn-TBAP reduced the cytotoxic effect of MPP(+) in the presence of 7-ketocholesterol. The results indicate that 7-ketocholesterol shows a synergistic effect against the cytotoxic effect of MPP(+). 7-Ketocholesterol may enhance the MPP(+)-induced viability loss in PC12 cells by promoting the mitochondrial membrane permeability change, release of cytochrome c and subsequent activation of caspase-3, which is associated with the increased formation of reactive oxygen species and depletion of GSH. The findings suggest that 7-ketocholesterol as a promoting agent for the formation of mitochondrial permeability transition may enhance the toxic neuronal cell injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and their association with risk factors in the Korean population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey 2001 was a nationally representative survey with a stratified multistage sampling design. Data from a comprehensive questionnaire, a physical examination, and blood tests were obtained from 5,844 Korean adults (2,513 men and 3,331 women) aged >20 years. RESULTS The age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes in this Korean population was 7.6%, and the age-adjusted prevalences of previously diagnosed diabetes and newly diagnosed diabetes were 4.4 and 3.3%, respectively (fasting plasma glucose > or = 7.0 mmol/l). Overall, these results indicate that 8.1% or 1.4 million Korean men and 7.5% or 1.3 million Korean women have diabetes. The age-adjusted prevalence of IFG was 23.9%, using the new American Diabetes Association criteria (fasting plasma glucose 5.6-6.9 mmol/l). Diabetes prevalence increased with age and peaked in the oldest age-group; however, IFG prevalence did not show the same trend. Diabetes was found to be associated with age, BMI, blood pressure, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, education levels, alcohol consumption, exercise, and a family history of diabetes. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that diabetes and IFG are common in Korea, and about one-half of diabetes cases remain undiagnosed. These results emphasize the need to develop an urgent public program to improve the detection, prevention, and treatment of diabetes.

Abstract
A randomized trial has demonstrated that concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is superior to radiotherapy (RT) alone in locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). Our study comprise 35 patients with locally advanced NPC (stage I: 1, II: 12, III: 7, IV: 15) with 1 cycle of induction chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil 1,000 mg/m(2)/day and cisplatin 20 mg/m(2)/day, days 1- 4) followed by concurrent CRT starting on day 22. Concurrent CRT consisted of RT (70 Gy/35 fractions for 7 weeks) with cisplatin 20 mg/m(2)/day for 4 days on weeks 1, 4, 7 of RT. Complete response (CR) was achieved in 33 patients (94%). Four-year progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of all patients were 57% and 65%, respectively. In analysis of prognostic factors, low expression of bax was the most significant independent predictor of poor prognosis in both PFS (p=0.002) and OS (p=0.008). In conclusion, the outcome of patients treated with this combined therapeutical modality appears to be comparable with that of Intergroup 0099 trial with high CR rate. Low expression of bax was significantly associated with poor PFS and OS.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine whether the glucosinolates naturally present in non-deheated mustard flour could serve as a source of allyl and other isothiocyanates in sufficient quantity to kill Escherichia coli O157:H7 inoculated in ground beef at three different levels, during refrigerated storage of the meat under nitrogen. Mustard flour was mixed at 5%, 10% or 20% (w/w) with freshly ground beef, then the beef was inoculated with a cocktail of five strains of E. coli O157:H7 at either 3, 6 or < or =1.6 log10 cfu/g. The ground beef was formed into 100 g patties and each was placed in a bag of Nylon/EVOH/PE, which was back-flushed with 100% N2, heat-sealed and stored at 4 degrees C for < or =21 days. During storage, the allyl isothiocyanate (AIT) levels in package headspaces were determined by gas liquid chromatography. By 21 days, the levels present in treatments were not significantly different. After 21 days storage, there were 0.5, 3 and 5.4 log10 decreases in numbers of E. coli O157:H7 from the initial levels of 6 log10 cfu/g in meat containing 5%, 10% and 20% mustard flour, respectively. When inoculated at 3 log10 cfu/g, E. coli O157:H7 was reduced to undetectable levels after 18, 12 and 3 days with 5%, 10% and 20% mustard flour, respectively. When immunomagnetic separation (IMS) was used for E. coli recovery following its inoculation at < or =1.6 log10 cfu/g, 5% mustard did not completely eliminate the pathogen from ground beef stored for 6 days. The natural microflora of the ground beef which developed in vacuum packages was unaffected by the addition of 5% mustard flour but some inhibition was found at higher concentrations. Sensory evaluation of the cooked ground beef showed that there were no significant differences in the acceptability of meat treated with 5 or 10% mustard flour. However, panelists could distinguish untreated controls from mustard treatments, but considered the mustard-treated meat to be acceptable. These results showed that it is possible to use mustard flour at levels of >5-10% to eliminate E. coli O157:H7 from fresh ground beef.

Abstract
Commercial allyl isothiocyanate (AIT) was examined for its ability to reduce numbers of Escherichia coli O157:H7 inoculated in fresh ground beef packaged under nitrogen and stored refrigerated or frozen. A five-strain cocktail of E. coli O157:H7 containing 3 or 6 log10 cfu/g was inoculated into 100 g ground beef and formed into 10x1-cm patties. A 10-cm diameter filter paper disk treated with AIT suspended in sterile corn oil was placed on top of a single patty. One patty and paper disk were placed in a bag of Nylon/EVOH/PE with O2 permeability of 2.3 cm3 m(-2) 24 h atm at 23 degrees C. The bags were back-flushed with 100% nitrogen, heat-sealed and stored at 10, 4 and -18 degrees C for 8, 21 or 35 days, respectively. During storage, the AIT levels in the package headspaces were determined by gas liquid chromatography, and mesophilic bacteria and E. coli O157:H7 were counted. The mesophilic aerobic bacteria in ground beef patties were largely unaffected by the addition of AIT. At an initial population of 3 log10 cfu/g, E. coli O157:H7 was reduced by AIT to undetectable levels after 18 days at 4 degrees C or 10 days at -18 degrees C. In samples inoculated with 6 log10 cfu/g, a >3 log10 reduction of E. coli O157:H7 was observed after 21 days at 4 degrees C, while a 1 log10 reduction was observed after 8 and 35 days at 10 and -18 degrees C, respectively. The final AIT concentrations in the headspaces after storage at 10, 4, and -18 degrees C were 444, 456, and 112 microg/ml at 8, 21, and 35 days, respectively. Results showed that AIT can substantially reduce numbers of E. coli O157:H7 in fresh ground beef during refrigerated or frozen storage.

Abstract
Weanling pigs tend to avoid wind, and suckling piglets are thought to be more sensitive to wind than weanlings, owing to their thinner s.c. fat layer. We developed a crush-reducing device based on the anticipated behavior of suckling piglets toward wind and evaluated the performance of the device through field testing. The crush-reducing device consisted of six photo sensors, a controller, six solenoid valves, and an air compressor. In this study, 206 sows and their suckling piglets (Landrace xYorkshire) were investigated to ascertain the individual effects of several factors. Some of the newborn piglets were cross-fostered before the crush-reducing device was implemented. Litter weights were measured on d 0 and 4 to determine the influence of the crush-reducing device on the weights of suckling piglets. The crushing of suckling piglets by sows was affected by season (P < 0.01) and litter size (P < 0.05), but not by the parity of the sows; however, the number of crushed piglets per litter was less (P < 0.01) in the crush-reducing device group (0.05 +/- 0.02 crushed piglets/litter) than in the control group (0.23 +/- 0.04 crushed piglets/litter), regardless of litter size or season. The BW gain of suckling piglets did not differ between the control and the crush-reducing device groups. Based on these results, the crush-reducing device is expected to decrease the number of crushed piglets per litter without influencing the BW gain of suckling piglets, thereby greatly contributing to the productivity of pig breeders.

Abstract
In order to characterize the nitrogen conversion characteristics in a thermophilic aerobic digestion (TAD) system, a laboratory study has been conducted with the analysis of effluent gas and microbial community in the sludge samples. The lab TAD system was operated with HRT of 3 days and 60 degrees C. Based on the nitrogen mass balance, it has been found that about 2/3 of the daily load of nitrogen was converted to the gaseous form of nitrogen whereas cellular transformation and unmetabolized nitrogen accounted for about 1/3. Among the gaseous nitrogen transformation, significant amount of influent nitrogen had been converted to N2 gas (29% of influent N) and N2O (9% of influent N). Ammonia conversion was only 28% of influent N. The detection of N2O gas is a clear indication of the biological nitrogen reduction process in the thermophilic aerobic digester. No conclusive evidence for the existence of aerobic deammonification has been found. The microbial community analysis showed that thermophilic bacteria such as Bacillus thermocloacae, Bacillus sp. and Clostridial groups dominated in this TAD reactor. The diverse microbial community in TAD sludge may play an important role in removing both strong organics and nitrogen from piggery waste.

A lipophorin (Lp) receptor cDNA from the fat body of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) was cloned and sequenced. This is the first result in this order, Lepidoptera. It showed the pattern of the VLDL receptor belonging to the LDL receptor family. Sequence homology with other Lp receptors in insects, Locusta migratoria and Aedes aegypti, was 70 and 61%, respectively and each domain was highly conserved. Polyclonal anti-Lp receptor antibody prepared against expressed Lp receptor fragment between ligand binding domain and EGF-precursor homology domain (R305-D549 of amino acid residues) specifically detected the Lp receptor. Through immuno-blotting, the Lp receptor of larval fat body has an approximate molecular mass of about 97 and 110 kDa under non-reducing and reducing conditions, respectively. This result was in agreement with that of the ligand-blotting. The variant Lp receptors were expressed in the fat body of G. mellonella; one is an Lp receptor which lacks 84 bp of O-linked sugar domain and the other is a full length form of the Lp receptor. Both forms were detected by the polyclonal anti-Lp receptor antibody. The Lp receptor from the fat body of G. mellonella was differently expressed depending on the tissue and the developmental stage with specific abundance in prepupal stage. A steroid hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone (20-HE) plays a crucial role in insect development. With regards to this conception, day 1-2 last instar larvae were treated with 20-HE and drastic induction of the Lp receptor was observed 48 h after treatment. It was also observed that cholesterol caused an induction of the Lp receptor.

Abstract
A porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) designated DR13 was isolated in Vero cells and serially passaged by level 100. The virus was titrated at regular intervals of the passage level. Open reading frame (ORF) 3 sequences of the virus at passage levels 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 were aligned and compared using a computer software program. Suitability of the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis for differentiating the virus from other Korean field strains was investigated. The DR13 field isolate was successively adapted in Vero cells as observed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and titration of the virus. RFLP analysis identified change in cleavage sites of HindIII and Xho II from passage levels 75 and 90, respectively; these RFLP patterns of ORF 3 differentiated the Vero cell-adapted virus from its parent strain, DR13, and 12 other strains of PEDV studied. The cell adapted DR13 was tested for its pathogenicity and immunogenicity in piglets and pregnant sows. The results indicated that cell adapted DR13 revealed reduced pathogenicity and induced protective immune response in pigs. Differentiation between highly Vero cell-adapted virus and wild-type virus could be the marker of adaptation to cell culture and a valuable tool for epidemiologic studies of PEDV infections. The results of this study supported that the cell attenuated virus could be applied as a marker vaccine candidate against PEDV infection.

Abstract
An attempt has been made to use modern quantum methods to codify the data base concerning bond dissociation energies in hydrocarbons. Calculations have been performed using two hybrid DFT methods, the well-known B3LYP formalism and a newly developed alternative named KMLYP. CBS-Q has also been employed where possible. The combination of experimental uncertainty and theoretical limitations is less than completely satisfactory. However, within uncertainties that translate to a factor of two at 1500 K, many transferable quantities are elucidated. A hybrid method has been developed for the correction of DFT calculations using group additivity. Given that the philosophy behind this work is the understanding that all data bases must be optimised for specific applications, so that avoidance of large errors is more important than absolute precision, the results appear to be quite useful. We are particularly encouraged by the performance of the KMLYP method, given its ease of application to molecules of practical interest.

Abstract
Nociceptin (N/OFQ) is a novel heptadecapeptide with an amino acid sequence similar to that of endogenous opioid peptide dynorphin A. Dynorphin have been reported to increase the secretion of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) via selective activation of kappa-opioid receptor in cultured atrial cardiocytes. The present study was designed to investigate the direct effect of N/OFQ on the ANP secretion in cultured neonatal rat cardiac myocytes via N/OFQ receptor (NOP) activation. The secretion of ANP from cultured neonatal cardiac myocytes was increased in terms of incubation time. N/OFQ, at a dose of 0.3, 1, 3, and 10 microM, caused increases in ANP secretion in a dose-dependent manner. The N/OFQ-induced ANP secretion was completely antagonized by antagonists of NOP, 1 microM each of [Phe1 (CH2-NH) Gly2] nociceptin (1-13)-NH2 ([FG]N/OFQ(1-13)NH2) or naloxone benzoylhydrazone. In contrast, naloxone (1 microM), the non-selective opioid receptor antagonist, did not alter ANP response to N/OFQ. N/OFQ at 3 microM inhibited basal and forskolin-stimulated cAMP production, which was partially antagonized with the pretreatment of [FG]N/OFQ(1-13)NH2. An increase in ANP secretion by N/OFQ was also partially blocked by the pretreatment of forskolin. Homologous competition studies in neonatal cardiomyocyte membranes revealed the presence of two distinct sites. The high affinity site (10.9 +/- 1.6 nM) was far less abundant than the low affinity site. Therefore, these results suggest that N/OFQ causes an increase in ANP secretion in cultured neonatal cardiac myocytes by decreasing cAMP through its binding sites.

Abstract
The use of vitamin and mineral supplements is increasing among young individuals. We surveyed 972 Korean teenagers (age 13-18 y ) for their use of vitamin/mineral supplements, their motivational factors, and the dietary consequences of supplement use. Prevalence of vitamin/mineral supplement use was 31%. Supplement use was highest in high-school students, females, individuals living in rural communities, and individuals from families in high socioeconomic strata. The supplements used most frequently were vitamin C, multivitamins, and vitamin A. Supplement users had a more positive view of the potential health benefits of supplements than did non-users. Most supplements were taken daily. Vitamins B2, B6, and C were the most frequently ingested nutrients from vitamin/mineral supplements. Vitamin/mineral intakes from supplements had a wide range, with mean intakes typically exceeding Korean or the U.S./Canadian recommended dietary allowances. Vitamins B12, B1, and C and iron comprised 2770%, 1930%, 1120%, and 1026%, respectively, of the Korean recommended dietary allowances. When nutrient intakes from the diet and supplements were combined, intakes of niacin, vitamin C, and iron exceeded the recommended upper-intake levels for these nutrients. The health benefits and risks of supplement use by teenagers merits further study.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common disease among patients undergoing transplantation and a loss of bone mass is usually detected after bone marrow transplantation (BMT), particularly during the immediate post-BMT period. Post-BMT bone loss is primarily related to gonadal dysfunction and immunosuppression. Cytokines, especially interleukin 6, play an important role in the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis. However, the pathogenetic role of cytokines in post-BMT bone loss is unknown and data on the changes of cytokines in accordance with bone turnover markers are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between bone turnover markers and cytokines, which are regularly sampled at peripheral blood and bone marrow before and after allogeneic BMT. This prospective study included two analyses. The first was a study of 46 BMT recipients (M/F 28/18), examining the relationship between bone turnover markers and serum cytokines that were measured before and at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and 3 months after BMT. Serum intact parathyroid hormone was measured before BMT and at 3 weeks after BMT and its relation to other cytokines and bone turnover markers was evaluated. The second analysis was a study of 14 (M/F 9/5) of 46 patients in whom bone marrow plasma cytokines [interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha)] were measured at 3 weeks after BMT. The relationship between bone marrow plasma cytokines and bone turnover markers was studied because bone marrow is the microenvironment where the real changes in bone turnover occur. Serum type I collagen carboxyterminal telopeptide (ICTP), a bone resorption marker, increased progressively until 4 weeks (peak) after BMT and then decreased thereafter. Serum osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreased progressively until 3 weeks after BMT and then increased thereafter. Serum IL-6 increased until 2 weeks after BMT and declined thereafter. Serum TNF-alpha increased until 3 weeks after BMT and declined thereafter. There was a significant positive correlation between serum ICTP and bone marrow IL-6 levels at 3 weeks after BMT, when a marked change in bone metabolism occurs following BMT. However, a correlation between bone turnover markers and bone marrow TNF-alpha or peripheral blood cytokines was not found. At 3 months after BMT, there was a significant negative correlation between the mean daily steroid dose and the serum osteocalcin level (r = -0.43, p < 0.05). The correlation between the Mean daily steroid dose and serum ICTP was also significant (r = 0.41, p < 0.05). Our data suggest that the progressive increase in bone resorption during the immediate post-BMT period is related to both steroid dose and the increase in bone marrow IL-6, which is a potent stimulator of bone resorption in vivo.

Abstract
It has been shown that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) influences proliferation of cardiac cells. To define the possible role of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) in cardiac hypertrophy, the influence of CNP on the secretion of ANP was studied with the use of perfused nonbeating atria from monocrotaline-treated rats. Increases in atrial volume caused proportional increases in ANP secretion that were markedly suppressed by CNP (10(-6) M) in nonhypertrophied left atria and control right atria but not in hypertrophied right atria. However, increases in atrial volume and mechanically stimulated extracellular fluid (ECF) translocation by CNP were similar to those in the control group. Therefore, the secretion of ANP in terms of ECF translocation was decreased by CNP in nonhypertrophied left and control right atria but not in hypertrophied atria. However, the inhibitory effect of 8-bromo-cGMP on the secretion of ANP was observed in both atria. The cGMP productions from perfused hypertrophied atria and their membranes exposed to CNP were significantly lower than those from nonhypertrophied atria. No significant difference in natriuretic peptide receptor-B transcript was found. Therefore, attenuation of the inhibitory effect of CNP on the ANP secretion in hypertrophied atria may be due to lack of cGMP production. The results showing the relief of CNP-induced negative inhibition of ANP secretion by atrial hypertrophy suggest that CNP may be a contributing factor to delay the development of cardiac hypertrophy.

Abstract
The influence of dissolved CO2 on the potentiometric responses of all-solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) was systematically examined with four different types of electrodes fabricated by pairing pH-sensitive and pH-insensitive metal electrodes (Pt and Ag/AgCl, respectively) with pH-sensitive and pH-insensitive ion-selective membranes (H+-selective membrane based on tridodecylamine and Na+-selective membrane based on tetraethyl calix[4]arenetetraacetate, respectively). The experimental results clearly showed that the carbonic acid formed by the diffused CO2 and water vapor at the membrane/metal electrode interface varies the phase boundary potentials both at the inner side of the H+-selective membrane (deltaE(in)mem) and at the metal electrode surface (deltaEelec). The potential changes, deltaE(in)mem and deltaEelec, occurring at the facing boundaries, are opposite in their sign and result in a canceling effect if both the membrane and metal surface are pH-sensitive. Consequently, the H+-selective membrane coated on a pH-sensitive electrode (Pt) tends to exhibit a smaller CO2 interference than that on a pH-insensitive electrode (Ag/AgCl). When the all-solid-state Na+ and K+ ISEs were fabricated with both pH-insensitive metal electrode and ion-selective membrane, they did not suffer from CO2 interference. It was also confirmed that plasticization of the PVC leads to increased CO2 permeation. Various types of intermediate layers were examined to reduce the CO2 interference problem in the fabrication of H+-selective all-solid-state ISEs. The results indicated that the H+-selective electrode needs an intermediate layer that maintains a constant pH unless the carbonic acid formation at the interfacial area is effectively quenched.

Abstract
The current pattern in the mixed state of high-T(c) superconductors is studied in the U(1) mean-field theory of the t-J model. Assuming the absence of spin antiferromagnetism we find (1) at moderate doping staggered-current pattern exists in vortex cores and eventually percolates with increasing magnetic field. (2) The polarity of the staggered current is pinned by the magnetic field. (3) Vortex cores with (without) staggered current are slightly negatively (positively) charged. (4) Gutzwiller projection does not wash out the staggered current. We discuss the signature of staggered current in neutron scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy.

Abstract
To investigate the disease process of pneumoconiosis induced by welding-fume exposure, a lung fibrosis model was established by building a stainless steel arc welding fume generation system and exposing male Sprague-Dawley rats for 90 days. The rats were exposed to welding fumes with concentrations of 57-67 mg/m3 (low dose) and 105-118 mg/m3 (high dose) total suspended particulates for 2 h per day in an inhalation chamber for 90 days. The concentrations of the main metals, Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni, were measured in the welding fumes, plus the gaseous compounds, including nitrous gases and ozone, were monitored. During the exposure period, the animals were sacrificed after the initial 2-h exposure and after 15, 30, 60, and 90 days. Histopathological examinations were conducted on the animals' upper respiratory tract, including the nasal pathway and conducting airway, plus the gas exchange region, including the alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli. When compared to the control group, the lung weights did not increase significantly in the low-dose group, yet in the high-dose group there was a significant increase from day 15 to day 90. The histopathological examination combined with fibrosis-specific staining (Masson's trichrome) indicated that the lungs in the low-dose group did not exhibit any progressive fibrotic changes. Whereas, the lungs in the high-dose group exhibited early delicate fibrosis from day 15, which progressed into the perivascular and peribronchiolar regions by day 30. Interstitial fibrosis appeared at day 60 and became prominent by day 90, along with the additional appearance of pleural fibrosis. Accordingly, it would appear that a significant dose of welding-fume exposure was required to induce lung fibrosis.

Abstract
Terfenadine, an antihistaminic drug, has relatively low bioavailability after oral administration due to its limited solubility in water. To enhance the antihistaminic activity of terfenadine, the terfenadine-beta-cyclodextrin (1:2) inclusion complex was prepared by the neutralization method. The solubility and dissolution of the inclusion complex were carried out, and its antihistaminic activity was then evaluated and compared with terfenadine powder by the passive subcutaneous anaphylaxis method in rats. The formation constant of the inclusion complex was higher at lower pH, while its formation ratio was 1:2 irrespective of pH. For terfenadine, it improved the solubility 200 times and the dissolution rate 5 times. It gave a low histamine level at 30 min, followed by a sustained low level until 60 min, while terfenadine powder gave a low histamine level at 60 min, suggesting that it had faster and more effective antihistaminic activity than terfenadine powder in rats due to fast dissolution and absorption of terfenadine. It is concluded that this inclusion complex enhanced the antihistaminic activity of terfenadine following the enhanced solubility and dissolution of terfenadine.

Abstract
Evidence of infection with Helicobacter species in pig stomach was investigated by the use of a PCR with Helicobacter genus-specific primers. Forty pig stomachs, each of four different ulcer lesion grades, 0, 1, 2, and 3 in the pars esophagea area, were collected from a slaughterhouse in Minnesota. Of 160 stomach samples examined, 102 (63.8%) were positive by the PCR assay. The 40 samples each of lesion grades 0, 1, 2, and 3 showed 22.5, 52.5, 85.0, and 95.0% PCR-positive results, respectively. There was a significant trend (P < or = 0.01) in the proportions of PCR-positive cases relative to severity of the lesion. About 80% of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified, and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns were analyzed. Of 102 PCR-positive samples, the PCR-RFLP patterns resulted in four different types, 32 samples being classified into type MN 1, 16 samples into type MN 2, 43 samples into type MN 3, and 11 samples into type MN 4. When the sequences of each RFLP type were compared to those reported in databases by using BLAST software, types MN 1, MN 2, MN 3, and MN 4 showed homologies of 97.3, 95.4, 96.7, and 99.5% with the 16S ribosomal DNA of Helicobacter flexispira taxon 3, Helicobacter sp. strains MIT 94-022 and MZ 640285, and Helicobacter suis, respectively. None of the 102 samples positive for the Helicobacter genus were positive with a primer set specific for Helicobacter pylori. Attempts to culture the organisms from selected stomachs in vitro were unsuccessful.

Abstract
Recently Chakravarty, Laughlin, Morr, and Nayak [Phys. Rev. B 62, 4880 (2000)] made an interesting proposal that the cuprate superconductors possess a hidden " d-density-wave" (DDW) order. We study the implication of this proposal for the superfluid density rho(s). We find that it predicts a temperature gradient [d rho(s)/dT](T = 0) that is strongly doping dependent near the critical doping at which the superconducting gap vanishes. This demonstrates that the DDW scenario is inconsistent with existing well-established experimental data.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are two well-known important causative factors of gastric damage. While H. pylori increases apoptosis and the proliferation of gastric epithelial cells and is an important factor in peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, NSAIDs induce cell apoptosis and have antineoplastic effects. We investigated the effects of NSAIDs (a nonselective cyclooxygenase [COX] inhibitor [indomethacin] and a selective COX-2 inhibitor [NS-398]) on the apoptosis and proliferation of gastric epithelial cells and gastric inflammation in H. pylori-infected mice. C57BL/6 mice were sacrificed 8 weeks after H. pylori SS1 inoculation. Indomethacin (2 mg/kg) or NS-398 (10 mg/kg) was administered subcutaneously once daily for 10 days before sacrifice. The following were assessed: gastric inflammatory activity, gastric COX protein expression by Western blotting; gastric prostaglandin E(2) levels by enzyme immunoassay, apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling, and cell proliferation by Ki67 immunostaining. Compared to the controls, H. pylori infection and/or NSAID treatment increased COX-1 and COX-2 protein expression. Gastric prostaglandin E(2) levels, apoptotic index, cell proliferation index, neutrophil activity, and the degree of chronic inflammation were all increased by H. pylori infection, and these effects were significantly decreased by indomethacin treatment. However, NS-398 treatment after H. pylori infection did not induce a significant reduction, although it did result in a tendency to decrease. These results show that NSAIDs can reverse the increased apoptosis and proliferation of epithelial cells and inflammatory activity in the stomachs of H. pylori-infected mice and that, like COX-2 activation, COX-1 induction contributes to the change of gastric mucosal cell turnover and inflammation induced by H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Variation within genes has important implications for all biological traits. We identified 3899 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were present within 313 genes from 82 unrelated individuals of diverse ancestry, and we organized the SNPs into 4304 different haplotypes. Each gene had several variable SNPs and haplotypes that were present in all populations, as well as a number that were population-specific. Pairs of SNPs exhibited variability in the degree of linkage disequilibrium that was a function of their location within a gene, distance from each other, population distribution, and population frequency. Haplotypes generally had more information content (heterozygosity) than did individual SNPs. Our analysis of the pattern of variation strongly supports the recent expansion of the human population.

Abstract
In the marine mollusk Aplysia, the CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein, ApC/EBP, serves as an immediate early gene in the consolidation of long-term facilitation in the synaptic connection between the sensory and motor neurons of the gill-withdrawal reflex. To further examine the role of ApC/EBP as a molecular switch of a stable form of long-term memory, we cloned the full-length coding regions of two alternatively spliced forms, the short and long form of ApC/EBP. Overexpression of each isoform by DNA microinjection resulted in a l6-fold increase in the expression of the coinjected luciferase reporter gene driven by an ERE promoter. In addition, when we overexpressed ApC/EBP in Aplysia sensory neurons, we found that the application of a single pulse of 5-HT that normally induced only short-term facilitation now induced long-term facilitation. Conversely, when we attempted to block the synthesis of native ApC/EBP by microinjecting double-strand RNA or antisense RNA, we blocked long-term facilitation in a sequence-specific manner. These data support the idea that ApC/EBP is both necessary and sufficient to consolidate short-term memory into long-term memory. Furthermore, our results suggest that this double-strand RNA interference provides a powerful tool in the study of the genes functioning in learning and memory in Aplysia by specifically inhibiting both the constitutive and induced expression of the genes.

Abstract
A complementary DNA expression library derived from marrow samples from myeloma patients was recently screened and human macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha (hMIP-1alpha) was identified as an osteoclastogenic factor expressed in these samples. hMIP-1alpha enhanced osteoclast (OCL) formation in human marrow cultures and by highly purified OCL precursors in a dose-dependent manner (5-200 pg/mL). Furthermore, hMIP-1alpha enhanced OCL formation induced by human interleukin-6 (IL-6), which is produced by marrow stromal cells when they interact with myeloma cells. hMIP-1alpha also enhanced OCL formation induced by parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand (RANKL), factors also implicated in myeloma bone disease. Time-course studies revealed that the hMIP-1alpha acted during the last 2 weeks of the 3-week culture period. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that the chemokine receptors for hMIP-1alpha (CCR1 and CCR5) were expressed by human bone marrow and highly purified early OCL precursors. Furthermore, hMIP-1alpha did not increase expression of RANKL. These data demonstrate that hMIP-1alpha is an osteoclastogenic factor that appears to act directly on human OCL progenitors and acts at the later stages of OCL differentiation. These data further suggest that in patients with myeloma, MIP-1alpha produced by myeloma cells, in combination with RANKL and IL-6 that are produced by marrow stromal cells in response to myeloma cells, enhances OCL formation through their combined effects on OCL precursors. Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been reported that many peripheral vasodilating drugs might improve insulin resistance. Cilostazol, a antithrombotic agent, increases peripheral blood flow in non-insulin dependent diabetic patients. The effect of cilostazol treatment on insulin resistance in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced non-insulin dependent diabetic Wistar rats was examined. METHODS About a half of two-day old neonate siblings were injected intraperitoneally with STZ and maintained for six months, at which time they were compared with age-matched control rats for intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT) and for glucose infusion rate (GINF) in a euglycemic hyperinsulinemic glucose-clamp study. After that, these studies were also performed after feeding rat chow containing cilostazol (100 mg/kg/day) to rats with STZ-induced non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus for four-weeks and compared with those of age-matched control rats. RESULTS In the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test studies, plasma glucose levels of STZ-induced non-insulin dependent diabetic rats were significantly higher and plasma insulin levels significantly lower than those of age-matched control rats in the age of six months. Glucose infusion rate was lower in STZ-induced non-insulin dependent diabetic rats than those of age-matched control rats. However, after a four-week cilostazol treatment, glucose infusion rate of STZ-induced non-insulin dependent diabetic rats was not significantly different from that of control rats. CONCLUSION These findings suggested that cilostazol may improve insulin resistance in STZ-induced non-insulin dependent diabetic rats.

Abstract
Antibodies and cytokines in serum were detected in male ICR mice treated with the aqueous extract of Epimedii Herba (AEEH) at doses of 40, 120 and 360 mg/kg orally for 2 weeks. Effects of AEEH on antibody forming responses were assessed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of immunoglobulin (Ig) levels in serum collected 7 days after priming with ovalbumin (OVA) in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) or immediately without priming at week 2. The relative spleen weight was significantly increased by AEEH, compared with controls, especially at a dose of 120 mg/kg of it after priming with OVA and 40 mg/kg without priming, respectively. However, body weight gain was slightly decreased in AEEH-fed mice. The enhancement of total serum IgG and IgG1 levels in unprimed mice was statistically significant in mice fed 40 mg/kg AEEH. Total serum IgG2a levels and Il-4 secretion were also statistically augmented by all groups of AEEH treatment. A tendency to marked increase of total serum IgM level and IFN-gamma secretion was also observed in mice fed 40 and 120 mg/kg AEEH but not those fed 360 mg/kg AEEH. When mice were immunized with OVA, furthermore, a marked stimulation of antibody formation and cytokines secretion was observed in all groups of AEEH-fed mice compared with controls. These findings indicate that AEEH at therapeutic concentrations enhances the production of antibodies and cytokines in mice, and the enhancing effects are more marked when the mice were immunized with OVA. Thus, these results suggest that AEEH is effective on Th cell functions, and protective effects on host against immune diseases.

Abstract
We used polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-selective complementary DNA (cDNA) subtraction hybridization with an immortalized murine osteoclast (OCL) precursor cell line to identify genes that are highly expressed in OCLs compared with OCL precursors and which may be involved in the OCL differentiation process. ADAM8 was one of the 50 genes identified. ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase) peptides are membrane-bound proteins that can act as cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix adhesion molecules, degrade the extracellular matrix, and play a role in tissue morphogenesis. Addition of antisense (AS) S-oligonucleotides for ADAM8 (1-10 nM) to mouse bone marrow cultures treated with 10(-9) M 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25-(OH)2D3] significantly inhibited OCL formation compared with treatment with the control S-oligonucleotide. Furthermore, conditioned media from 293 cells transiently transfected with a secretable form of the ADAM8 cDNA increased OCL formation in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, treatment of OCLs with soluble ADAM8 conditioned media significantly increased pit formation per dentin slice compared with control OCLs. Time course studies indicated that ADAM8 increased OCL formation only when it was present during days 4-7 of the 7-day culture period. Structural analysis, using truncated constructs of ADAM8, showed that the cysteine-rich/disintegrin domain was responsible for its OCL stimulatory activity. Western blot analysis confirmed that the soluble form of ADAM8 is present in normal marrow cultures. These data suggest that ADAM8 plays an important role in OCL formation and acts primarily at the later stages of OCL differentiation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The genetic changes associated with pathogenesis have not been well defined. This study investigates the nonrandom genetic alteration of nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma. METHODS Nine cases were studied. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) was carried out using fresh tumor tissues of seven nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphomas. To complement the data by CGH, loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of chromosomes 6q, 1p, and 17p using polymorphic markers and p53 gene mutation by polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) were analyzed. RESULTS The DNA copy number changes of seven nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphomas were gains on chromosomes 2q(5), 13q(4), 10q(3), 21q(2), 3q(2), 5q(2), and 17q(2), and losses involving chromosomes 1p(4), 17p(4), 12q(3), 13q(2), and 6q(1). One of six cases informative for at least two markers for chromosome 6q showed LOH at D6S300, D6S1639, D6S261, D6S407, and D6S292. Two cases showing loss of 1p and 17q by CGH revealed LOH at D1S214, D1S503, and D17S559. P53 mutation was detected in exon 8 in one of nine cases. CONCLUSIONS Frequent DNA losses at 1p, 17p, and 12q and gains at 2q, 13q, and 10q suggested that these regions could be targets for further molecular genetic analysis to investigate tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes associated with tumorigenesis of NK/T-cell lymphoma. Infrequent alteration of 6q contrary to previous studies raises doubt about an implication of 6q loss in the pathogenesis of early-stage NK/T-cell lymphoma. Further studies on more defined cases are required to verify their association.

Abstract
The hydroxyl groups of lactitol were propoxylated to produce poly(ether polyol) (LPEP). The average pK(a) value of hydroxyl groups of the polyol was 1.63. Cross-linked hydrogels were synthesized by esterification with chlorinated poly(ethylene glycol) bis(carboxymethyl) ether (PEGBCOCl). The swelling ratio decreased with increasing cross-linking ratio (PEGBCOCl:LPEP) from 2:1 to 4:1 in the hydrogels and was sensitive to temperature change between 25 and 55 degrees C and concentrations of salt and glucose. The swelling ratio did not change significantly with pH in the range of 4-9. The release profiles of a model active agent, acetylsalicylic acid, from the hydrogels showed that the diffusional release rate had a half-order dependence on time, and the diffusivity decreased with increasing cross-linking ratio. This work demonstrated that LPEP-based hydrogels can be used for controlled delivery of drugs and agrochemicals and the release rates can be controlled with the cross-linking ratio of the hydrogel.

Abstract
Lactitol-based cross-linked hydrogel was synthesized, and model proteins (alpha-chymotrypsin, beta-lactoglobulin, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and gamma-globulin) were incorporated into the cross-linked hydrogel. The larger-molecular-weight proteins have lower diffusivity (D(e)) in the hydrogel. Increasing temperature accelerated the diffusion rate of proteins; however, the diffusion did not follow the Arrhenius equation at temperatures above 37 degrees C. The swelling ratio of the hydrogel was slightly decreased after heating for 2 h at 37 and 45 degrees C, and significantly reduced after 1 h at 60 degrees C. Therefore, diffusion of beta-lactoglobulin and BSA may be decreased by hydrogel shrinking at temperature over 37 degrees C. The model proteins have high affinities to buffer solution compared to the hydrogel network structure, resulting in high partition coefficients (K > 1) which do not affect the calculation of D(e) values. Incorporated protein release follows the theory of hindered diffusion.

Abstract
Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcomas, especially those of extranodal origin, are extremely rare, and this entity could easily be missed without a high index of suspicion. We report a case of FDC sarcoma presenting as a submucosal tumor of the stomach in a 45-year-old man. The mass was a spindle and epithelioid mesenchymal tumor with many individually scattered and perivascular aggregates of lymphocytes. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies confirmed the diagnosis. Although more than 50 cases of this tumor have been documented in the English literature, to our knowledge the presentation of FDC sarcoma as a submucosal tumor of the stomach has never been recorded. This case highlights the occurrence of FDC sarcoma as a submucosal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. We believe that FDC sarcoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of spindle or epithelioid cell tumors of the gastrointestinal hollow viscus to prevent this still under-recognized tumor from being overlooked.

Abstract
The dorsoventral axis of the Drosophila embryo is induced by a ventrally restricted ligand for the receptor Toll. The Toll ligand is generated by a proteolytic processing reaction, which occurs at the end of a proteolytic cascade and requires the gastrulation defective (gd), nudel, pipe, and windbeutel genes. Here we demonstrate that the GD protein is a serine protease and that the three other genes act to restrict GD activity to the ventral side of the embryo. Our data support a model in which the GD protease catalyzes the ventral activation of the proteolytic cascade that produces the Toll ligand.

Abstract
The present study elucidated the protective effect of beta-carbolines (harmaline, harmalol, and harmine) on oxidative neuronal damage. MPTP treatment increased activities of total superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase and levels of malondialdehyde and carbonyls in the basal ganglia, diencephalon plus midbrain of brain compared with control mouse brain. Coadministration of harmalol (48 mg/kg) attenuated the MPTP effect on the enzyme activities and formation of tissue peroxidation products. Harmaline, harmalol, and harmine attenuated both the 500 microM MPP(+)-induced inhibition of electron flow and membrane potential formation and the 100 microM dopamine-induced thiol oxidation and carbonyl formation in mitochondria. The scavenging action of beta-carbolines on hydroxyl radicals was represented by inhibition of 2-deoxy-D-ribose degradation. Harmaline and harmalol (100 microM) attenuated 200 microM dopamine-induced viability loss in PC12 cells. The beta-carbolines (50 microM) attenuated 50 microM dopamine-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells. The compounds alone did not exhibit significant cytotoxic effects. The results indicate that beta-carbolines attenuate brain damage in mice treated with MPTP and MPP(+)-induced mitochondrial damage. The compounds may prevent dopamine-induced mitochondrial damage and PC12 cell death through a scavenging action on reactive oxygen species and inhibition of monoamine oxidase and thiol oxidation.

Abstract
We study the single-vortex solution of the t-J model within resonating-valence-bond mean-field theory. We find two types of vortex cores, insulating and metallic, depending on the parameters of the model. The pairing order parameter near both cores have d(x(2)-y(2))+ietad(xy) symmetry. For some range of t/J the calculated tunneling spectrum of the metallic vortex core agrees qualitatively with the STM tunneling data for BSCCO.

Abstract
In order to investigate occupational diseases related to welding fume exposure, such as nasal septum perforation, pneumoconiosis and manganese intoxication, we built a welding fume exposure system that included a welding fume generator, exposure chamber and fume collector. The fume concentrations in the exposure chamber were monitored every 15 min during a 2-h exposure. Fume (mg/m(3)) concentrations of major metals, including Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni were found to be consistently maintained. An acute inhalation toxicity study was conducted by exposing male Sprague-Dawley rats to the welding fumes generated in this apparatus by stainless steel arc welding. The rats were exposed in the inhalation chamber to a welding fume with a concentration of 62 mg/m(3) total suspended particulates for 4 h. Animals were sacrificed at 4 h and at 1, 3, 7, 10, and 14 days after exposure. Histopathological examinations were conducted on the animals' upper respiratory tracts, including the nasal pathway and the conducting airway, and on the gas exchange region including the alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli. Diameters of fume particles varied from 0.02 to 0.81 microm and were distributed log normally, with a mean diameter of 0.1 microm and geometric standard deviation of 1.42. Rats exposed to the welding fume for 4 h did not show any significant respiratory system toxicity. The mean particle diameter of 0.1 microm resulted in little adsorption of the welding fume particles in the upper respiratory tract. Particle adsorption took place principally in the lower respiratory tracts, including bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli.

Abstract
The coding regions of segment A of two recent Korean very virulent (vv) infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) isolates (KK1 and KSH) and one atypical IBDV isolate (K310) were amplified by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, sequenced, and compared with published sequences for IBDV. The overall amino acid sequence similarity of the KK1 and KSH strains compared with foreign vvIBDV strains was between 97.43% and 98.02%. The KK1 and KSH strains, like vvIBDV strains, share unique amino acid residues at positions 222(A), 256(I), 294(I), and 299(S). The sequence of K310 strain was markedly different from other IBDV strains. The K310 strain had 12, 2, and 1 unique amino acid substitutions in the VP2 hypervariable region, VP4, and VP3 gene, respectively, and 3 of 12 substitutions in a VP2 hypervariable region were found in two hydrophilic regions known to be involved in antigenic determination. Also, the K310 strain had 222(S) and 254(S), which were found in variant IBDV strains. The SWSASGS heptapeptide is conserved in all Korean IBDV isolates. By phylogenetic analysis, KK1 and KSH were categorized in one group with foreign vvIBDV isolates, but K310 isolate was categorized in a separate group that was differentiated from the other IBDV strains compared. The K310 strain seemed to be evolved from a separate lineage of IBDV strain.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate, in vivo, the inhibitory effects of certain serotonergic drugs on the contractile response of the rat seminal tract to electrical stimulation of the hypogastric nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-five Sprague Dawley rats (250 to 300 gm. each) were equally divided into 5 groups based on experimental agent; normal saline, clomipramine, sertraline, paroxetine, and fluoxetine. The hypogastric nerve was electrically stimulated and the intraluminal pressure of the vas deferens was measured, both pretreatment and 30 minutes after intravenous injection of four different doses (0.1 to 20 x the therapeutic dose) of each agent. Variations of responses relative to the time after administration of each agent (at 10- and 20-fold concentration) were also observed. RESULTS All serotonergic drugs caused dose-dependent inhibition of elevation in intraluminal pressure of the vas deferens (p <0.05). The inhibitory effect of clomipramine was significantly better (p <0. 05) than that of fluoxetine at a 1-fold dose, while no significant differences were noted among clomipramine, sertraline and paroxetine. At doses of 10- and 20-fold, clomipramine had the strongest inhibitory effect, followed by sertraline and paroxetine, then fluoxetine (p <0.05). No differences were found in the inhibitory effects of the drugs studied, as a function of the time after injection. CONCLUSIONS Clomipramine was the most potent drug for inhibition of elevation in intraluminal pressure of the rat vas deferens induced by electrical stimulation of the rat hypogastric nerve. The stronger inhibitory effect of clomipramine than the selective serotonin reuptake blockers suggests a possible peripheral action of clomipramine in addition to its central serotonergic action.

Abstract
Anti-Pv200 antibody levels were assessed in samples from endemic areas of Plasmodium vivax malaria in the Republic of Korea (ROK), using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Asymptomatic carriers of P. vivax were detected using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood samples. Anti-Pv200 antibody levels in 20 vivax malaria patients (optical density +/- standard deviation [OD +/- SD] values 1.85 +/- 0.29 of IgG isotype and 1.33 +/- 1.33 of IgM isotype) were markedly higher than those of uninfected, malaria-naive controls (0.08 +/- 0.16 of IgG isotype and 0.04 +/- 0.04 of IgM isotype). Antibody levels for 7 out of 8 soldiers with a recent malaria infection were sustained above the cut-off values for 4 months after successful treatment. Analysis of serum collected from 40 healthy, asymptomatic soldiers who had a P. vivax malaria attack within 3 months after our sampling, revealed 11 antibody-positive samples (27.5%), compared to 5 positive samples (12.5%) collected from a random selection of 40 soldiers. Among a larger pool of 1,713 soldiers who had served in high-risk areas for P. vivax transmission, 15% were antibody positive. Among 1,000 blood samples from asymptomatic soldiers who had served in the high-risk areas, 4 samples (0.4%) were parasite positive, as determined by nested PCR. Our results show that anti-Pv200 antibody levels can provide useful information in the late diagnosis of P. vivax malaria infection in a previously naive population and also in large seroepidemiologic studies. Furthermore, our results suggest that asymptomatic P. vivax carriers could be important in the current outbreak of malaria in Korea.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the level of mitochondrial ATPase 6 gene expression in unfertilized oocytes and cleavage-stage embryos. DESIGN Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was performed in unfertilized oocytes and cleavage-stage embryos derived from tripronucleate embryos to determine ATPase 6 gene expression. SETTING Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Human Genetics Laboratory, Infertility Medical Center of CHA General Hospital, College of Medicine, Pochon CHA University, Seoul, Korea. PATIENT(S) Oocytes were obtained from infertile couples undergoing in vitro fertilization. INTERVENTION(S) Unfertilized oocytes collected at 48 hours after retrieval and cleavage-stage embryos derived from tripronucleate embryos were prepared for evaluation of mitochondrial gene expression. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Comparison of ATPase 6 gene expression by using single-cell reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. RESULT(S) Expression of unfertilized oocytes decreased compared with early cleavage-stage embryos. CONCLUSION(S) Our findings of decreased ATPase 6 expression in unfertilized oocytes suggest that there may be a decrease in the mitochondrial functional capacity of oxidative phosphorylation.

Abstract
Organ transplantation is now the treatment of choice for many patients with life-threatening chronic diseases. A new set of side effects unique to these groups of patients has become recognized, and bone disease is one of these complications. However, little is known about the effects of myeloablative treatment followed by bone marrow transplantation (BMT) on bone mineral metabolism. We have prospectively investigated 31 patients undergoing BMT for hematologic diseases. Serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, creatinine, gonadotropins, sex hormones, and the biochemical markers of bone turnover were measured. The samples were collected before BMT and 1, 2, 3, 4, and 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year after BMT. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry before BMT and 1 year after BMT. The serum carboxy-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen increased progressively until 4 weeks after BMT. Thereafter, it began to decrease and reached basal values after 1 year. Serum osteocalcin decreased progressively until 3 weeks after BMT. After that, it increased and reached basal values after 3 months. No distinct differences were observed in the serum biochemical turnover markers between males and females, or between patients who received total body irradiation and those who did not. One year after BMT, lumbar spine BMD had decreased by 2.2%, and total proximal femoral BMD had decreased by 6.2%. Eighty-six percent of the women (12/14) went into a menopausal state immediately after BMT. This was caused by high gonadotropin levels and low estradiol levels. In contrast, gonadotropin levels and testosterone levels did not change significantly in the male patients after BMT. In conclusion, the rapid impairment of bone formation and the increase in bone resorption, as shown by the biochemical markers in this study, might play a role in post-BMT bone loss.

Abstract
It is unclear why the concentration of testosterone increases in the testicular vein after hemicastration without corresponding alteration in gonadotropins. The present work was undertaken to examine whether the testosterone levels could be modified by denervation of the testis in adult rats. Both systemic and testicular blood samples were collected either immediately before or 6 and 24 hours after hemicastration from the rats two weeks after denervation of either inferior spermatic nerves (ISN) or ISN plus superior spermatic nerves (ISN-SSN). Increase of testicular testosterone induced by hemicastration was significantly (P<0.05) inhibited in these rats, as compared with the sham animals (at 6 and 24 hours, ISN vs sham: 16.00+/-3.35 vs 42.72+/-13.85 and 26.93+/-8.68 vs 71.16+/-13.30 whilst ISN-SSN vs sham: 31.63+/-7.92 vs 60.61+/-18.11 and 27.70+/-8.93 vs 93.92+/-19.73 ng/ml, respectively), whereas no significant change in LH was observed in all the experimental groups. FSH underwent no alteration in all the ISN denervation groups, but a significant elevation was observed in the ISN-SSN denervation groups (P<0.05) before hemicastration. Therefore, it appears that the change in FSH is not the cause of the inhibition of testosterone increase in the hemicastrated rats after testicular denervation and that ISN plays an active role in regulation of testosterone increase induced by hemicastration.

Abstract
This study examined Croatian, Korean, and U.S. children's knowledge of numerical fractions prior to school instruction. The research is part of an ongoing project examining the influence of language characteristics on mathematical thinking and performance. The part-whole quantitative relation denoted by numerical fractions may be easier to understand in East Asian languages like Korean. In these languages, the concept of fractional parts is embedded in the mathematics terms used for fractions. The results from this study suggest that the Korean vocabulary of fractions may influence the meaning 6- to 7-year-old children ascribe to numerical fractions and that this results in children being able to associate numerical fractions with corresponding pictorial representations prior to formal instruction.

Abstract
Three chiral selectors CM-beta-CD, EP-beta-CD, beta-CD were studied for the enatio-separation of three drugs under optimum conditions respectively. The results demonstrate that the resolving power for the drugs is as follows CM-beta-CD > EP-beta-CD > beta-CD, with the exception of lobeline. This is due to the--CH2COOCH3 group of CM-beta-CD, which will change the combination and improve the recognition on guest molecules. Although EP-beta-CD is inferior to CM-beta-CD for the separation of chlorpheniramine and verapamil, it has excellent recognition on lobeline and it has not been reported previously. In most cases EP-beta-CD is superior to beta-CD. The explanations are: (1) EP-beta-CD has good solubility in water, which enables high concentrations to be used and consequently achieves excellant separation of racemic compounds, (2) the polymerization of beta-CD changes the properties of CD units and the process produces a more rigid and different conformation from CD, (3) we must attribute much merits to the cooperation or synergism of two, three or even more CD moieties of two polymers for inclusion. Complexation with analytes possesses more than one guest part in their structure.
