Abstract
Objectives This meta-analysis aims to quantify the relationship between coffee and tea consumption and the risk of osteoporosis and explore whether such consumption positively or negatively impacts this risk, thereby providing a scientific basis for understanding the effects of coffee and tea on bone health. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase for observational studies published up to November 5, 2024, using medical subject headings (MeSH) and keywords related to "osteoporosis, tea, and coffee." Statistical analyses were conducted using Stata software version 14.0. A fixed-effects model was used when heterogeneity was low (I 2 ≤ 50% and p > 0.1). A random-effects model was used for greater heterogeneity (I 2 > 50%). Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger's regression tests. Results This meta-analysis included 14 observational studies comprising 562,838 participants published between 2008 and 2024. The pooled analysis showed that coffee consumption is significantly associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis (odds ratio [OR] = 0.79, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.73-0.84, I 2 = 28.9%, p < 0.05). Tea consumption also demonstrated a protective effect, with a lower risk of osteoporosis (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.62-0.91, I 2 = 80.4%, p < 0.05). Subgroup analysis revealed that high-frequency coffee consumption (more than one cup per day) was associated with a greater reduction in osteoporosis risk (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.74-0.93, p = 0.001) compared to low-frequency consumption (less than one cup per day), which showed no statistically significant reduction (OR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.68-1.07, p = 0.171). Similarly, high-frequency tea consumption (more than four times per week) exhibited a slightly stronger protective effect against osteoporosis compared to low-frequency consumption (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70-0.97, p = 0.02). Conclusion This meta-analysis suggests that long-term coffee and tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis. Moreover, a higher frequency of consumption within a moderate range appeared to enhance the protective effect against osteoporosis. Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. However, coffee plants are often exposed to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution. The main aims of current study were to detect the PTEs in instant coffee and health risk assessment of consumers in Bandar Abbas city. To achieve this, 40 samples of instant coffee were randomly collected from various points in the city in 2023 and PTEs concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were calculated using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. The concentrations of Fe and Cu were higher than other PTEs, equaling 404.41 mg/kg and 0.0046 mg/kg, respectively. The non-carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that THQ (Fe > Pb > As > Cd > Ni > Cu) and TTHQ levels were less than 1 based on the 95% percentile in adults and children, indicating there is no possibility of a non-carcinogenic risk associated with instant coffee. The carcinogenic risk due to inorganic As in instant coffee was acceptable (2.63E-5 and 1.27E-5 based on the 95% percentile for adults and children, respectively), therefore PTEs in instant coffee do not endanger the health of consumers.

Abstract
Coffee is a widely popular beverage worldwide, known for its distinct sensory properties which are greatly affected by geographical origin. Herein, we performed an untargeted metabolomic evaluation of green coffee beans (n = 40) from four different regions in Brazil: Cerrado Mineiro, Sul de Minas, Caparaó, and Mogiana Paulista; by using UHPLC-HRMS (ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry). The most significant metabolites responsible for coffee characterization were theobromine, zeatin, phenylacetaldehyde, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, chlorogenic acids, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, abscisic acid, and jasmonic acid. Our findings demonstrate that the green coffee cultivated in Cerrado Mineiro, the most valuable among the four samples evaluated, exhibits a unique and typical metabolite profile, setting it apart from the coffee beans grown in other regions. Finally, the findings reported may be relevant for coffee producers in the Cerrado Mineiro area, as they contribute to establishing a certificate of origin for their high-quality product.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cancer are significant contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recent studies have increasingly highlighted the potential of phytochemicals found in plants and plant-based foods for preventing and treating these chronic diseases. Mexico's agrobiodiversity provides a valuable resource for phytochemistry. This review presents an examination of essential phytochemicals found in plants and foods within Mexican agrobiodiversity that have shown promising anti-cancer and anti-diabetic properties, including their roles as antioxidants, insulin sensitizers, and enzyme inhibitors. Notable compounds identified include flavonoids (such as quercetin and catechins), phenolic acids (chlorogenic, gallic, and caffeic acids), methylxanthines (like theobromine), xanthones (such as mangiferin), capsaicinoids (capsaicin), organosulfur compounds (like alliin), and various lipids (avocatins). Although these phytochemicals have shown promise in laboratory and animal studies, there is a significant scarcity of clinical trial data involving humans, underscoring an important area for future research.

Abstract
This study quantified, for the first time, 2-isopropylmalic and 3-isopropylmalic acids, in green, roasted and espresso coffee by UHPLC-MS/MS. Moreover, it reports the influence of postharvest processing methods (natural, washed and honey) on their content. New extraction techniques were developed and validated from three coffee matrices (green, roasted and espresso). Honey coffee exhibited levels substantially higher of 2-isopropylmalic acid than those processed by natural and washed methods (p < 0.05). Specifically, 2-isopropylmalic acid levels in honey green, roasted and espresso coffee samples were 48.24 ± 7.31 ng/g, 168.8 ± 10.88 ng/g and 177.5 ± 9.49 ng/g, respectively. This research highlights the significant impact of processing methods on the chemical profile of coffee and introduces 2-isopropylmalic and 3-isopropylmalic acids as potential quality indicators. Moreover, it suggests that the fermentation stage during processing may play a crucial role in their formation, laying the foundation for optimizing coffee processing to enhance quality.

Abstract
The conception of coffee consumption has undergone a profound modification, evolving from a noxious habit into a safe lifestyle actually preserving human health. The last 20 years also provided strikingly consistent epidemiological evidence showing that the regular consumption of moderate doses of coffee attenuates all-cause mortality, an effect observed in over 50 studies in different geographic regions and different ethnicities. Coffee intake attenuates the major causes of mortality, dampening cardiovascular-, cerebrovascular-, cancer- and respiratory diseases-associated mortality, as well as some of the major causes of functional deterioration in the elderly such as loss of memory, depression and frailty. The amplitude of the benefit seems discrete (17 % reduction) but nonetheless corresponds to an average increase in healthspan of 1.8 years of lifetime. This review explores evidence from studies in humans and human tissues supporting an ability of coffee and of its main components (caffeine and chlorogenic acids) to preserve the main biological mechanisms responsible for the aging process, namely genomic instability, macromolecular damage, metabolic and proteostatic impairments with particularly robust effects on the control of stress adaptation and inflammation and unclear effects on stem cells and regeneration. Further studies are required to detail these mechanistic benefits in aged individuals, which may offer new insights into understanding of the biology of aging and the development of new senostatic strategies. Additionally, the safety of this lifestyle factor in the elderly prompts a renewed attention to recommending the maintenance of coffee consumption throughout life as a healthy lifestyle and to further exploring who gets the greater benefit with what schedules of which particular types and doses of coffee.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, is influenced by modifiable factors such as adiposity and blood cholesterol. Diet is crucial in these areas, particularly regarding antioxidant, inflammatory, and obesity effects. Coffee, a globally popular stimulant beverage, has garnered significant attention for its potential impact on cardiovascular diseases. Recent insights reinforce the need to re-examine the relationship between coffee consumption and atherosclerosis progression. Coffee's complex composition includes polyphenols, renowned for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as potential weight-reducing effects. In addition, studies have demonstrated that certain coffee compounds such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acid can prevent atherogenesis by preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins. Conversely, diterpenes, found in some coffee brews, can elevate cholesterol levels, posing a risk to coronary health. Notably, coffee intake has been shown to influence gut microbiota diversity, potentially contributing to anti-obesity effects. This review explores the insights from preclinical and clinical studies investigating the potential mechanisms through which coffee consumption may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis-highlighting the potential benefits of moderate filtered coffee consumption and the potential risks associated with excessive coffee consumption. Understanding this relationship is crucial for informing public health recommendations and guiding future research.

Abstract
This study analyzed the phytochemical composition and functional properties of leaves and green beans from seven Arabica coffee cultivars. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured using spectrophotometric methods, while caffeine, chlorogenic acid (CGA), and mangiferin levels were quantified via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Volatile compounds were identified using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant activity was assessed using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assays, and anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated by measuring reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) levels, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. The results revealed that coffee leaves had significantly higher levels of total phenols, flavonoids, and CGAs, and exhibited stronger antioxidant activities compared to green beans. Notably, Geisha leaves exhibited the highest concentrations of phenolics and flavonoids, along with potent anti-inflammatory properties. Among green beans, the Marsellesa cultivar exhibited a significant flavonoid content and strong ABTS scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects. GC-MS analysis highlighted distinct volatile compound profiles between leaves and green beans, underscoring the phytochemical diversity among cultivars. Multivariate 3D principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated clear chemical differentiation between coffee leaves and beans across cultivars, driven by key compounds such as caffeine, CGAs, and pentadecanoic acid. Hierarchical clustering further supported these findings, with dendrograms revealing distinct grouping patterns for leaves and beans, indicating cultivar-specific chemical profiles. These results underscore the significant chemical and functional diversity across Arabica cultivars, positioning coffee leaves as a promising functional alternative to green beans due to their rich phytochemical content and bioactive properties.

Abstract
Despite being one of the most frequently consumed beverages worldwide, there are concerns that excessive consumption of coffee can have adverse effects, especially concerning the addictive and stimulating effects of the alkaloid caffeine, which contributes to coffee's popularity. It is known to increase the risk of hypertension and heart rate among predisposed individuals, adversely affecting the nervous system. Even though they differ in nature from those found in coffee, coffee substitutes can be considered economically and health-wise as a favorable alternative to natural coffee brews. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art varieties of plants used as coffee substitutes and discusses their production technology, chemical composition, nutritional properties, health benefits, economic challenges, and rationale for choosing the plant as a substitute for coffee. Various instant products and coffee substitute blends are also available on the market especially based on different kinds of plants and herbs like ginger, rye, date pits, quinoa, lupine, chicory, barley, rye, oak, and so on. These coffee substitutes have several advantages especially having no caffeine and containing different beneficial phytochemicals, although the results of the difference between the levels of harmful compounds in coffee and coffee substitutes were contradictory. Therefore, it is no wonder that the development of coffee substitutes, which are beverages that are able to mimic the taste and aroma of coffee, is on the rise at present.

Abstract
This review explores the historical, botanical, sensory, and quality aspects of Coffea canephora, with a focus on Brazil's rise as a producer of specialty canephora coffees in the Amazon region, Espírito Santo, and Bahia. Brazil has gained global recognition through the first geographical indications for canephora: Matas de Rondônia for robusta amazônico coffee and Espírito Santo for conilon coffee. Despite this, comprehensive insights into how variety, terroir, environmental conditions, and cultivation practices influence the chemical and sensory attributes of Brazilian canephora remain underdeveloped compared to well-studied arabica coffee. Producers and researchers are working to elevate canephora coffees to higher market levels, despite technological, production, and perception challenges stemming from its historical reputation for poor quality. Ensuring the sustainability of Amazonian canephora coffee without deforestation is particularly challenging due to the need to verify practices across numerous small-scale farms. There is also a critical need for standardized production and tasting protocols for Brazilian canephora, leveraging local expertise and professional cuppers to ensure consistent quality and reliable sustainability claims. Significant opportunities exist in valuing the production chain of geographically unique canephora coffees, which could increase specialty exports, enhance economic prospects for local farmers, and support Amazon preservation. Recognizing and marketing these coffees as premium products with unique flavor profiles can boost their global appeal. Another challenge lies in establishing new specialty standards for soluble coffee from specialty canephora to meet consumer demands for convenience without compromising taste or ethical standards. In such a scenario, several analytical methods have been suggested to identify high-quality variants, combating their stigmatization. The potential of spectroscopy techniques and chemometrics-based data science is highlighted in confirming coffee quality, authenticity, traceability, and geographical origin, enhancing model interpretation and predictive accuracy through synergistic and complementary information. Non-targeted spectroscopic analyses, providing comprehensive spectral fingerprints, are contrasted with targeted analyses. Overall, this review offers valuable insights for the coffee scientific community, exporters, importers, roasters, and consumers in recognizing the potential of Brazilian canephora coffees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, such as cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholelithiasis, and pancreatitis, are major global health challenges. Lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, and coffee intake are commonly studied for their health impacts. However, observational studies often face issues with confounding factors and reverse causality, making it difficult to establish causal relationships. METHODS This research uses Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal effects of smoking, alcohol use, and coffee intake on 10 hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Genetic data from the Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine Use (GSCAN) and self-reported GWAS were used to derive instrumental variables (IVs). The outcomes were obtained from the FinnGen and UK Biobank cohorts. Univariable and multivariable MR analyses were conducted to assess the associations. RESULTS Genetic predisposition to tobacco use was associated with increased risks of acute pancreatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, chronic pancreatitis, cirrhosis, gallstones, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Alcohol consumption was linked to acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, alcoholic liver disease, hepatic cancer, and cholangitis. Coffee intake showed minimal associations, with a slight protective effect against non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms the harmful effects of inhaling tobacco and consuming alcohol on hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. It highlights the need for public health strategies to reduce tobacco use and heavy alcohol consumption. Coffee intake showed minimal effects, suggesting further research is needed to understand its relationship with hepatobiliary health.

Abstract
Coffee intake is increasingly recognized as a life-style factor associated with the preservation of health, but there is still a debate on the relative effects of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee. We now tested how the regular drinking of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee for 3 weeks impacted on the behavior of male and female adult mice. Males drinking caffeinated coffee displayed statistically significant lower weight gain, increased sensorimotor coordination, greater motivation in the splash test, more struggling in the forced swimming test, faster onset of nest building, more marble burying and greater sociability. Females drinking caffeinated coffee displayed statistically significant increased hierarchy fighting, greater self-care and motivation in the splash test and faster onset of nest building. A post-hoc two-way ANOVA revealed sex-differences in the effects of caffeinated coffee (p values for interaction between the effect of caffeinated coffee and sex) on the hierarchy in the tube test (p = 0.044; dominance), in the time socializing (p = 0.044) and in the latency to grooming (p = 0.048; selfcare), but not in the marble burying test (p = 0.089). Intake of decaffeinated coffee was devoid of effects in males and females. Since caffeine targets adenosine receptors, we verified that caffeinated but not decaffeinated coffee intake increased the density of adenosine A1 receptors (A1R) and increased A1R-mediated tonic inhibition of synaptic transmission in the dorsolateral striatum and ventral but not dorsal hippocampus, the effects being more evident in the ventral hippocampus of females and striatum of males. In contrast, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee both ameliorated the antioxidant status in the frontal cortex. It is concluded that caffeinated coffee increases A1R-mediated inhibition in mood-related areas bolstering wellbeing of both males and females, with increased sociability in males and hierarchy struggling and self-care in females.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, recognized for its unique taste and aroma and for its social and health impacts. Coffee contains a plethora of nutritional and bioactive components, whose content can vary depending on their origin, processing, and extraction methods. Gathered evidence in literature shows that the regular coffee consumption containing functional compounds (e.g., polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and melanoidins) can have potential beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors such as abdominal adiposity, hyperglycemia, and lipogenesis. On the other hand, coffee compounds, such as caffeine, diterpenes, and advanced glycation end products, may be considered a risk for cardiometabolic health. The present comprehensive review provides up-to-date knowledge on the structure-function relationships between different chemical compounds present in coffee, one of the most prevalent beverages present in human diet, and cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
Cancer is a complicated and ever-evolving disease that remains a significant global cause of disease and mortality. Its complexity, which is evident at the genetic and phenotypic levels, contributes to its diversity and resistance to treatment. Numerous scientific investigations on human and animal models demonstrate the potential of phytochemicals in cancer prevention. Coffee has been shown to possess potent anti-carcinogenic properties, and studies have documented the consumption of coffee as a beverage reduces the risk of cancer occurrence. The major secondary metabolites of coffee, named caffeine and chlorogenic acid, have been linked to anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic effects through various signaling. In light of this, this review article provides a comprehensive analysis based on studies in anticancer effects of coffee, chlorogenic acid, and caffeine published between 2010 and 2023, sourced from Scopus, Pubmed, and Google Scholar databases. We summarize recent advances and scientific evidence on the association of phytochemicals found in coffee with a special emphasis on their biological activities against cancer and their molecular mechanism deemed potential to be used as a novel therapeutic target for cancer prevention and therapy.

Abstract
Coffee, a universally consumed beverage, is known to contain thousands of bioactive constituents that have garnered interest due to their potential neuroprotective effects against various neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Extensive research has been conducted on coffee constituents such as Caffeine, Trigonelline, Chlorogenic acid, and Caffeic acid, focusing on their neuroprotective properties. These compounds have potential to impact key mechanisms in AD development, including amyloidopathy, tauopathy, and neuroinflammation. Furthermore, apart from its neuroprotective effects, coffee consumption has been associated with anticancerogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, thereby enhancing its therapeutic potential. Studies suggest that moderate coffee intake, typically around two to three cups daily, could potentially contribute to mitigating AD progression and lowering the risk of related neurological disorders. This literature underscores the potential neuroprotective properties of coffee compounds, which usually perform their neuronal protective effects via modulating nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2), interleukins, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and many other molecules.

Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of motor neurons. The effective treatments for ALS remain elusive, necessitating exploration into novel preventive strategies. ALS pathogenesis is triggered by oxidative stress which results in neuroinflammation, exicitotoxicity and neuronal cell death. Nutritional mechanism for halting progression of neurodegeneration is through dietary compounds with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory or neuromodulating activity. Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made up of polyphenols, caffeine and other compounds with possible antioxidants and neuro-protective roles. It is important to say that various epidemiological studies have documented association between coffee intake and ALS. This chapter is aimed to present a comprehensive review of existing literature on coffee consumption and ALS, involving epidemiological studies, preclinical research, and its mechanism of actions in animal model of ALS. It highlights key findings regarding the potential neuroprotective properties of coffee constituents such as caffeine, polyphenols, and other bioactive compounds. Furthermore, it discusses possible pathways through which coffee may modulate ALS pathogenesis, including suppressing oxidative stress and neuroinflammation while boosting adenosine function via the adenosine receptor two on the motor neuron cells membrane in the spinal cord to enhance motor function via the corticospinal tract. Overall, this chapter underscores the significance of further research to unravel the specific mechanisms by which coffee exerts its neuroprotective effects in ALS, with the ultimate goal of identifying dietary strategies for ALS prevention and management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coffee beans have a long history of use as traditional medicine by various indigenous people. Recent focus has been given to the health benefits of coffee beans and its bioactive compounds. Research on the bioactivities, applications, and effects of processing methods on coffee beans' phytochemical composition and activities has been conducted extensively. The current review attempts to provide an update on the biological effects of coffee on type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its comorbidities. METHODS Comprehensive literature search was carried out on peer-reviewed published data on biological activities of coffee on in vitro, in vivo and epidemiological research results published from January 2015 to December 2022, using online databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect for our searches. RESULTS The main findings were: firstly, coffee may contribute to the prevention of oxidative stress and T2D-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, obesity, and metabolic syndrome; secondly, consuming up to 400 mg/day (1-4 cups per day) of coffee is associated with lower risks of T2D; thirdly, caffeine consumed between 0.5 and 4 h before a meal may inhibit acute metabolic rate; and finally, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee are associated with reducing the risks of T2D. CONCLUSION Available evidence indicates that long-term consumption of coffee is associated with decreased risk of T2D and its complications as well as decreased body weight. This has been attributed to the consumption of coffee with the abundance of bioactive chemicals.

Abstract
Postoperative ileus (POI) after colorectal surgery is a major problem that affects both patient recovery and hospital costs highlighting the importance of preventive strategies. Therefore, we aimed to perform a systematic analysis of the effects of postoperative caffeine consumption on bowel recovery and surgical morbidity after colorectal surgery. A comprehensive literature search was conducted through September 2023 for randomized and non-randomized trials comparing the effect of caffeinated versus non-caffeinated drinks on POI by evaluating bowel movement resumption, time to first flatus and solid food intake, and length of hospital stay (LOS). Secondary outcome analysis included postoperative morbidity in both groups. After data extraction and inclusion in a meta-analysis, odds ratios (ORs) for dichotomous variables and standardized mean differences (SMDs) for continuous outcomes with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Subgroup analyses were performed in cases of substantial heterogeneity. Six randomized and two non-randomized trials with a total of 610 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Caffeine intake significantly reduced time to first bowel movement [SMD -0.39, (95% CI -0.66 to -0.12), p = 0.005] and time to first solid food intake [SMD -0.41, (95% CI -0.79 to -0.04), p = 0.03] in elective laparoscopic colorectal surgery, while time to first flatus, LOS, and the secondary outcomes did not differ significantly. Postoperative caffeine consumption may be a reasonable strategy to prevent POI after elective colorectal surgery. However, larger randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with homogeneous study protocols, especially regarding the dosage form of caffeine and coffee, are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A bidirectional relationship between chronic pain (CP) and mental disorders has been reported, and coffee was believed to be associated with both. However, the association of coffee in this bidirectional relationship remains unclear. We aim to analyze the association of coffee consumption on the relationship of CP with depression and anxiety. METHODS A total of 376,813 participants from UK Biobank were included. We collected data on anxiety, depression and CP from objects of our study population. The association of coffee consumption on the relationship of CP with depression and anxiety was assessed through logistic/linear regression models. Moreover, seemingly unrelated estimation test (SUEST) was used to compare whether the coefficients differed in two different groups. RESULTS We observed significant associations of coffee consumption in the interaction of CP with depression and anxiety, such as the association of multisite chronic pain (MCP) on self-reported depression (βcoffee = 0.421, βnon-coffee = 0.488, PSUEST = 0.001), and the association of MCP on generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) scores (βcoffee = 0.561, βnon-coffee = 0.678, PSUEST = 0.004) were significantly different between coffee drinking and non-coffee drinking groups. Furthermore, in analysis stratified by gender, we found headache (βmale = 0.392, βfemale = 0.214, PSUEST = 0.022) and hip pain (βmale = 0.480, βfemale = 0.191, PSUEST = 0.021) had significant associations with self-reported depression between males and females groups in coffee drinkers. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that coffee consumption has a significant association on the relationship of CP with depression and anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between tea and coffee consumption and mortality among patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains barely explored. Herein, this study aimed to examine the association between tea and coffee consumption and the likelihood of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in patients with MetS. METHODS A total of 118,872 participants with MetS at baseline from the UK Biobank cohort were included. Information on tea and coffee consumption was obtained during recruitment using a touchscreen questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality were determined using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 13.87 years, 13,666 deaths were recorded, with 5913, 3362, and 994 deaths from cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and respiratory disease (RD), respectively. This research showed a significant inverse association between tea intake and the risk of all-cause and cancer mortality, the respective HRs (95% CI) for consuming tea 2 vs. 0 cup/day were 0.89 (0.84-0.95), and 0.91 (0.83-0.99), and tea intake ≥ 4 cups/day could reduce CVD mortality by 11% (HR 0.89; 95% CI 0.81-0.98). The U-shaped nonlinear association between coffee intake and all-cause/CVD mortality was examined (all p-nonlinear < 0.001). The HRs (95% CI) for coffee consumption 1 vs. 0 cup/day were 0.93 (0.89-0.98) and 0.89 (0.80-0.99), and for ≥ 4 vs. 0 cup/day were 1.05 (1.01-1.11) and 1.13 (1.03-1.25), respectively. Notably, the combined intake of tea and coffee presented a protective effect against all-cause mortality (HR < 1). CONCLUSIONS The importance of daily tea and moderate coffee consumption in individuals with MetS to optimise health benefits are highlighted.

Abstract
Coffee oligosaccharides (COS) are novel sources of prebiotics comprising manno-oligosaccharides, galacto-oligosaccharides, arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides, and cello-oligosaccharides. These oligosaccharides function as prebiotics, antioxidant-dietary fiber owing to important physicochemical and physiological properties, adjuvants, pharma, nutraceutical food, gut health, immune system boosting, cancer treatment, and many more. Research suggests COS performs prebiotic action, as it enhances gut health by promoting beneficial bacteria in the colon and releasing functional metabolites such as SCFAs. However, research on COS concerning other metabolic illnesses is still lacking. Among various production strategies, pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis are preferred for the production of COS. Functional oligosaccharides can add value to coffee waste and reduce the environmental impact of coffee manufacturing, besides providing more options for healthy and active ingredients. This review updates COS, production, bio-activity, their role as a functional food, food supplements/natural food additives, prebiotics and many applications of health sectors. Research is desirable to extend information on COS and their bio-activity, besides in vivo and clinical trials, to assess their effects in prior human formulations into the food and therapeutic arena.

Abstract
An untargeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) approach combined with sensory analysis was used to present the effects of different extraction methods (i.e., Pure Brew, V60, AeroPress, and French Press) on specialty graded Coffea arabica from Kenya. Partial Least Square Discriminant analysis and hierarchical clustering were applied as multivariate statistical tools in data analysis. The results showed good discrimination and a clear clustering of the groups of samples based on their volatile profiles. Similarities were found related to the filter material and shape used for the extraction. Samples extracted with paper filters (V60 and AeroPress) resulted in higher percentages of caramel-, and flowery-related compounds, while from metal filter samples (Pure Brew and French Press), more fruity and roasted coffees were obtained. Discriminant analysis allowed the identification of eight compounds with a high VIP (variable important in projection) discriminant value (i.e., >1), with 2-furanmethanol being the main feature in discrimination. Sensorial analyses were carried out through an expert panel test. The main evaluations revealed the French Press system as the lowest-scored sample in all the evaluated parameters, except for acidity, where its score was similar to V60. In conclusion, the data obtained from GC-MS analyses were in line with the sensorial results, confirming that the extraction process plays a fundamental role in the flavor profile of filter coffee beverages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological stress, as an important cofactor in the development of many acute and chronic diseases, is crucial for general health or well-being, and improved markers are needed to distinguish situations of progressive pathological development, such as depression, anxiety, or burnout, to be recognized at an early stage. Epigenetic biomarkers play an important role in the early detection and treatment of complex diseases such as cancer, and metabolic or mental disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to identify so-called miRNAs, which would be suitable as stress-related biomarkers. METHODS AND RESULTS In this study, 173 participants (36.4% males, and 63.6% females) were interviewed about stress, stress-related diseases, lifestyle, and diet to assess their acute and chronic psychological stress status. Using qPCR analysis, 13 different miRNAs (miR-10a-5p, miR-15a-5p, miR-16-5p, miR-19b-3p, miR-26b-5p, miR-29c-3p, miR-106b-5p, miR-126-3p, miR-142-3p, let-7a-5p, let-7g-5p, miR-21-5p, and miR-877-5p) were analyzed in dried capillary blood samples. Four miRNAs were identified, miR-10a-5p, miR-15a-5p, let-7a-5p, and let-7g-5p (p < 0.05), which could be used as possible candidates for measuring pathological forms of acute or chronic stress. Let-7a-5p, let-7g-5p, and miR-15a-5p (p < 0.05) were also significantly higher in subjects with at least one stress-related disease. Further, correlations were identified between let-7a-5p and meat consumption (p < 0.05) and between miR-15a-5p and coffee consumption (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The examination of these four miRNAs as biomarkers using a minimally invasive method offers the possibility of detecting health problems at an early stage and counteracting them to maintain general and mental health.

Abstract
Kombucha is a functional beverage obtained through fermentation of sweetened Camellia sinensis infusion by a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts that exerts many beneficial biological effects, mostly related to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Alternative raw materials have been used to create new kombucha or kombucha-like products. Coffee is the most important food commodity worldwide and generates large amounts of by-products during harvest and post-harvest processing. The main coffee by-product is the dried fruit skin and pulp, popularly known as cascara. To date, no studies have evaluated the potential bioactivity of coffee cascara kombucha. In this study, we aimed to measure and compare the effects of infusions and kombuchas made with arabica coffee cascaras (n = 2) and black tea leaves (n = 1), fermented for 0, 3, 6, and 9 days on the intracellular production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Nitric Oxide (NO) in model cells. Oxidative stress was induced in HK-2 cells with indoxyl sulfate (IS) and high glucose (G). Inflammation was induced with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW 264.7 macrophage. The contents of phenolic compounds, caffeine, and other physicochemical parameters were evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study providing information on the bioactive profile and on the potential biological effects of coffee cascara kombucha. Fermentation caused the release of bound phenolic compounds from the infusions, especially total chlorogenic acids, with an average increase from 5.4 to 10.7 mg/100 mL (98%) and 2.6-3.4 mg/100 mL (30%) in coffee cascara and black tea kombucha, respectively, up to day 9. All evaluated beverages reduced (p < 0.0001) similarly the intracellular ROS (41% reduction, on average) and uric acid (10-55%) concentrations in HK-2 model cells, reversing the induced oxidative stress. All beverages also reduced (p < 0.0001, 81-90%) NO formation in LPS-induced macrophages, exhibiting an anti-inflammatory effect. These potential health benefits may be mostly attributed to polyphenols and caffeine, whose contents were comparable in all beverages. Coffee cascara showed similar potential to C. sinensis to produce healthy beverages and support sustainable coffee production.

Abstract
We examined the association between caffeine and coffee intake and the community composition and structure of colonic microbiota. A total of 34 polyp-free adults donated 97 colonic biopsies. Microbial DNA was sequenced for the 16S rRNA gene V4 region. The amplicon sequence variant was assigned using DADA2 and SILVA. Food consumption was ascertained using a food frequency questionnaire. We compared the relative abundance of taxonomies by low (<82.9 mg) vs. high (≥82.9 mg) caffeine intake and by never or <2 cups vs. 2 cups vs. ≥3 cups coffee intake. False discovery rate-adjusted p values (q values) <0.05 indicated statistical significance. Multivariable negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the incidence rate ratio and its 95% confidence interval of having a non-zero count of certain bacteria by intake level. Higher caffeine and coffee intake was related to higher alpha diversity (Shannon index p < 0.001), higher relative abundance of Faecalibacterium and Alistipes, and lower relative abundance of Erysipelatoclostridium (q values < 0.05). After adjustment of vitamin B2 in multivariate analysis, the significant inverse association between Erysipelatoclostridium count and caffeine intake remained statistically significant. Our preliminary study could not evaluate other prebiotics in coffee.

Abstract
Coffee is a popular and widely consumed beverage worldwide, with epidemiological studies showing reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, cancers and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, few studies have investigated the health effects of the post-brewing coffee product, spent coffee grounds (SCG), from either hot- or cold-brew coffee. SCG from hot-brew coffee improved metabolic parameters in rats with diet-induced metabolic syndrome and improved gut microbiome in these rats and in humans; further, SCG reduced energy consumption in humans. SCG contains similar bioactive compounds as the beverage including caffeine, chlorogenic acids, trigonelline, polyphenols and melanoidins, with established health benefits and safety for human consumption. Further, SCG utilisation could reduce the estimated 6-8 million tonnes of waste each year worldwide from production of coffee as a beverage. In this article, we explore SCG as a major by-product of coffee production and consumption, together with the potential economic impacts of health and non-health applications of SCG. The known bioactive compounds present in hot- and cold-brew coffee and SCG show potential effects in cardiovascular disease, cancer, liver disease and metabolic disorders. Based on these potential health benefits of SCG, it is expected that foods including SCG may moderate chronic human disease while reducing the environmental impact of waste otherwise dumped in landfill.

Self-Reported Coffee Consumption and Central and Peripheral Blood Pressure in the Cohort of the Brisighella Heart Study. Nutrients 2023; 15:nu15020312. Abstract
Even though coffee consumption has been clearly related to a number of benefits to the cardiovascular system, its effect on blood pressure (BP) has not been fully elucidated. In this sub-analysis of the Brisighella Heart Study (BHS), we compared central and peripheral BP values in a sub-cohort of 720 men (47.9%) and 783 women (52.1%) reporting the drinking of different amounts of coffee each day, for whom a full set of clinical, laboratory and hemodynamic parameters was available. According to our observations, moderate coffee drinking was associated to either higher levels of systolic BP (SBP) compared to those with heavy coffee consumption or lower SBP than that in the non-coffee drinking group (p-value for trend <0.05). In particular, people who drank 2 cups of coffee per day and people who drank >3 cups per day had lower SBP than non-coffee drinkers by 5.2 ± 1.6 mmHg (p = 0.010) and 9.7 ± 3.2 mmHg, respectively (p = 0.007). Similar trends were also observed for peripheral pulse pressure (PP), aortic BP and aortic PP. In the age-adjusted multiple linear regression model, negative predictors of SBP, PP, aortic BP and aortic PP were the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), female sex and coffee consumption. Positive predictors included body mass index (BMI) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Then, our findings show that regular coffee drinking is associated with lower SBP, PP, aortic BP and aortic PP, but with similar arterial stiffness.

Green/Roasted Coffee and Silverskin Extracts Inhibit Sugar Absorption by Human Intestinal Epithelial (Caco-2) Cells by Decreasing GLUT2 Gene Expression. Foods 2022; 11:foods11233902. Abstract
Moderate coffee ingestion has been associated with a decrease in type 2 diabetes risk, mainly due to its richness in chlorogenic acids (CGA). To explore this, extracts of green beans, roasted beans, and silverskin were prepared by aqueous ultrasound-assisted extraction and characterized by a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detector (RP-HPLC-DAD). The effects on the uptake of glucose and fructose by human intestinal epithelial (Caco-2) cells and the influence on the expression of sugar transporter genes (by RT-qPCR) were investigated and compared. The uptake of 3H-deoxy-D-glucose and 14C-fructose by Caco-2 cells was significantly reduced by all the extracts, with green coffee (which also contained higher amounts of CGA) achieving the highest efficiency. Although silverskin presented the lowest amounts of CGA and caffeine, it promoted an inhibitory effect similar to the effects of green/roasted beans. In the case of glucose uptake, the effect was even higher than for roasted coffee. This activity is explained by the ability of the extracts to markedly decrease GLUT2, but not GLUT5 gene expression. In addition, a decrease in SGLT1 gene expression was also found for all extracts, although not at a statistically significant rate for silverskin. This study also revealed a synergistic inhibitory effect of caffeine and 5-CQA on the uptake of sugars. Thus, silverskin appears as an interesting alternative to coffee, since the valorization of this by-product also contributes to the sustainability of the coffee chain.

Abstract
Insufficient sleep is becoming increasingly common and contributes to many health issues. To combat sleepiness, caffeine is consumed daily worldwide. Thus, caffeine consumption and sleep restriction often occur in succession. The gut microbiome can be rapidly affected by either one's sleep status or caffeine intake, whereas the synergistic effects of a persistent caffeine-induced sleep restriction remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the impact of a chronic caffeine-induced sleep restriction on the gut microbiome and its metabolic profiles in mice. Our results revealed that the proportion of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes was not altered, while the abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria was significantly decreased. In addition, the content of the lipids was abundant and significantly increased. A pathway analysis of the differential metabolites suggested that numerous metabolic pathways were affected, and the glycerophospholipid metabolism was most significantly altered. Combined analysis revealed that the metabolism was significantly affected by variations in the abundance and function of the intestinal microorganisms and was closely relevant to Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. In conclusion, a long-term caffeine-induced sleep restriction affected the diversity and composition of the intestinal microbiota in mice, and substantially altered the metabolic profiles of the gut microbiome. This may represent a novel mechanism by which an unhealthy lifestyle such as mistimed coffee breaks lead to or exacerbates disease.

Abstract
Peaberry coffee is the result of a natural mutation of coffee beans, and they make up only about 5–7% of coffee crops. A typical coffee cherry contains two seeds that are developed against each other, resulting in the distinctive half-rounded shape of coffee beans. However, failing to fertilize both ovules of one of the seeds or failure in endosperm development can cause only one of the seeds to develop, resulting in smaller, denser beans with a more domed shape. Peaberry coffees are said to be sweeter, lighter, and more flavorful since the peaberry beans receive all nutrients from the coffee cherry. Due to its exclusive nature, the chemical characteristic of peaberry coffee is not well understood. This study explores the acidities and antioxidant activity of peaberry coffee sourced from multiple regions. Total antioxidant capacity, total caffeoylquinic acid (CQA), total caffeine concentration, and pH levels were evaluated for peaberry coffee extracts prepared by cold and hot brewing methods. Little correlation between antioxidant activity and the concentrations of caffeine and CQA in peaberry beans was shown. Six methods were performed for the characterization of total antioxidant capacity including cyclic voltammetry, ABTS assay, and FRAP assay. Peaberry bean extract demonstrated higher average total caffeine concentrations compared to traditional coffee bean extracts.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most consumed products in the world, and its by-products are mainly discarded as waste. In order to solve this problem and in the context of a sustainable industrial attitude, coffee by-products have been studied concerning their chemical and nutritional features for a potential application in foodstuffs or dietary supplements. Under this perspective, coffee silverskin, the main by-product of coffee roasting, stands out as a noteworthy source of nutrients and remarkable bioactive compounds, such as chlorogenic acids, caffeine, and melanoidins, among others. Such compounds have been demonstrating beneficial health properties in the context of metabolic disorders. This mini-review compiles and discusses the potential health benefits of coffee silverskin and its main bioactive components on metabolic syndrome, highlighting the main biochemical mechanisms involved, namely their effects upon intestinal sugar uptake, glucose and lipids metabolism, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota. Even though additional research on this coffee by-product is needed, silverskin can be highlighted as an interesting source of compounds that could be used in the prevention or co-treatment of metabolic syndrome. Simultaneously, the valorization of this by-product also responds to the sustainability and circular economy needs of the coffee chain.

Abstract
Coffee is a beverage consumed globally. Although few studies have indicated adverse effects, it is typically a beneficial health-promoting agent in a range of diseases, including depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. Coffee is rich in caffeine, antioxidants, and phenolic compounds, which can modulate the composition of the gut microbiota and mitigate both inflammation and oxidative stress, common features of the burden of lifestyle diseases. This review will discuss the possible benefits of coffee on complications present in patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, outwith the social and emotional benefits attributed to caffeine consumption.

Abstract
We verified whether caffeinated coffee consumption influenced the concentrations of prolactin (PRL) and oxidative stress parameters: total antioxidant status (TAS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), uric acid (UA), total bilirubin (T-Bil), albumin (ALB), iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP)-in blood sera obtained at 15, 60, and 120 minutes after caffeinated coffee intake, in relation to the fasting point. The study participants were 33 young, healthy, nonsmoking volunteers (15 men, 18 women) aged 19-29 years. PRL concentrations significantly decreased (p < 0.05) after consumption, except at time point 15' in men (p > 0.05). In women, FRAP levels significantly increased over time, and significant changes were also observed for UA at 120' and ALB at 15'. In men, significant changes were found for levels of AOPP at 15', T-Bil and ALB at 15', iron at 60' and 120', and calcium at 120'. There were no significant differences in the levels of other examined parameters between the defined time points. In conclusion, the substances contained in caffeinated coffee decrease the level of prolactin and may also have an impact on selected parameters of oxidative stress, which could be the basis of future research focused on the identification of new therapeutic targets.

Abstract
This study investigates the possibility of valorizing coffee silverskin through the recovery of its bioactive compounds using a sustainable extraction method that could be industrially applied. For that, aqueous extracts were prepared using ultrasonic-assisted extraction (laboratorial scale) and, for comparison, a scale-up of the process was developed using the Multi-frequency Multimode Modulated technology. A concentration procedure at the pilot scale was also tested. The three types of extracts obtained were characterized regarding caffeine and chlorogenic acids contents, and the effects on intestinal glucose and fructose uptake (including sugar transporters expression) in human intestinal epithelial (Caco-2) cells were ascertained. The phytochemical contents of the extracts prepared at the laboratory and pilot scale were comparable (caffeine: 27.7 vs. 29.6 mg/g freeze-dried extract; 3-, 4-, and 5-caffeoylquinic acids: 0.19 vs. 0.31, 0.15 vs. 0.42, and 1.04 vs. 1.98 mg/g, respectively; 4- and 5- feruloylquinic acids: 0.39 vs. 0.43 and 1.05 vs. 1.32 mg/g, respectively). Slight differences were noticed according to the extracts preparation steps, but in general, all the extracts promoted significant inhibitions of [1,2-3H(N)]-deoxy-D-glucose and 14C-D-fructose uptake, which resulted mainly from a decrease on the facilitative glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) and sodium-glucose linked transporter 1 (SGLT1) genes expression but not on the expression of the facilitative glucose transporter 5 (GLUT5) gene. Moreover, a synergistic effect of caffeine and 5-caffeoylquinic acid on sugars uptake was found. The results clearly show that the Multi-frequency Multimode Modulated technology is a viable option to be applied at an industrial level to recover bioactive components from silverskin and obtain extracts with antidiabetic potential that could be used to develop functional food products or dietary supplements.

Abstract
Coffee pulp, obtained from wet coffee processing, is the major by-product accumulating in the coffee producing countries. One of the many approaches valorising this underestimated agricultural residue is the production of distillates. This research project deals with the production of spirits from coffee pulp using three different Coffea arabica varieties as a substrate. Coffee pulp was fermented for 72 h with a selected yeast strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae L.), acid, pectin lyase, and water. Several parameters, such as temperature, pH, sugar concentration and alcoholic strength were measured to monitor the fermentation process. Subsequently, the alcoholic mashes were double distilled with stainless steel pot stills and a sensory evaluation of the products was conducted. Furthermore, the chemical composition of fermented mashes and produced distillates were evaluated. It showed that elevated methanol concentrations (>1.3 g/L) were present in mashes and products of all three varieties. The sensory evaluation found the major aroma descriptor for the coffee pulp spirits as being stone fruit. The fermentation and distillation experiments revealed that coffee pulp can be successfully used as a raw material for the production of fruit spirits. However, the spirit quality and its flavour characteristics can be improved with optimised process parameters and distillation equipment.

Abstract
The objective of this study was the application of green coffee bean flour in gluten-free cakes with different percentages (4, 8 and 15% (w/w)), to evaluate the optimal value for fortification, and the products were characterized based on their centesimal composition and bioactive compounds (caffeine and total phenolic compounds). Significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were observed in the content of lipids, total dietary fiber, insoluble fiber, energy values, sodium, caffeine, and total phenolics, mainly in the product in which 15% (w/w) green coffee bean flour was added. Caffeine content was only detected and quantified in products with > 8% (w/w) green coffee bean flour, whereas the total phenolic content was detected and quantified in products with > 4% (w/w) green coffee bean flour. Thus, fortification of these products with 15% green coffee bean flour promoted a higher content of total dietary fiber and lower content of lipids, calories, sodium, and increased bioactive compounds. Thus, green coffee bean flour is an excellent alternative for the production of innovative foods.

Abstract
Coffee beans contain high polyphenol content, which have the potential to modulate the intestinal microbiota, and possibly attenuate weight gain and the associated dyslipidemia. This study investigated the effect of freeze-dried coffee solution (FCS) consumption on physiological parameters, lipid profile, and microbiota of Wistar rats fed a high-fat diet (HF) or control diet (CT). FCS combined with a high-fat diet increased the fecal and cecal Bifidobacterium spp. population and decreased the cecal Escherichia coli population and intestinal Il1b mRNA level. Regardless of the diet type, FCS increased the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C); however, it did not affect body weight, food intake, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, fecal bile acids, and intestinal Il6 mRNA levels. The high-fat diet increased weight gain, hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides, fecal bile acids, and the fecal and cecal Lactobacillus spp. population, and reduced food intake, the fecal E. coli population, and intestinal Il6 mRNA level. The results suggest that FCS consumption exhibits positive health effects in rats fed a high-fat diet by increasing Bifidobacterium spp. population and HDL-C reverse cholesterol transport, and by reducing Il1b mRNA level. However, FCS administration at a dose of 0.39 g/100 g diet over an eight-week period was not effective in controlling food intake, and consequently, preventing weight gain in rats of high-fat diet-induced obesity model.

Abstract
Nowadays, coffee, cocoa, and spices have broad applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to their organoleptic and nutraceutical properties, which have turned them into products of great commercial demand. Consequently, these products are susceptible to fraud and adulteration, especially those sold at high prices, such as saffron, vanilla, and turmeric. This situation represents a major problem for industries and consumers’ health. Implementing analytical techniques, i.e., Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analysis, can ensure the authenticity and quality of these products since these provide unique information on food matrices. The present review addresses FT-MIR spectroscopy and multivariate analysis application on coffee, cocoa, and spices authentication and quality control, revealing their potential use and elucidating areas of opportunity for future research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the relation between coffee consumption and seizure frequency in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. METHODS Cross-sectional analysis of data collected in the SAVE study, which included patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy during long-term EEG monitoring. Patients in whom both coffee consumption and data about seizure frequency, including focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS), were available were selected. Coffee consumption was collected using a standardized self-report questionnaire and classified into four groups: none, rare (from less than 1 cup/week to up 3 cups/week), moderate (from 4 cups/week to 3 cups/day), and high (more than 4 cups/day). RESULTS Six hundred and nineteen patients were included. There was no relation between coffee consumption and total seizure frequency (p = 0.902). In contrast, the number of FBTCS reported over the past year was significantly associated with usual coffee consumption (p = 0.029). Specifically, number of FBCTS in patients who reported moderate coffee consumption was lower than in others. In comparison with patients with moderate coffee consumption, the odds ratio (95%CI) for reporting at least 1 FBTCS per year was 1.6 (1.03-2.49) in patients who never take coffee, 1.62 (1.02-2.57) in those with rare consumption and 2.05 (1.24-3.4) in those with high consumption. Multiple ordinal logistic regression showed a trend toward an association between coffee consumption and number of FBTCS (p = 0.08). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Our data suggest that effect of coffee consumption on seizures might depend on dose with potential benefits on FBTCS frequency at moderate doses. These results will have to be confirmed by prospective studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Coffee and tea intake might be associated with psychiatry diseases. However, it is unclear whether the effect of coffee/tea on anxiety and depression depending on the different types of proteins. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. SETTING Our datasets were downloaded from online. PARTICIPANTS Phenotypic and genotypic data for coffee intake(N=376,196) and tea intake (N=376,078) were derived from UK Biobank. GWAS data of proteins (N=1,537) from neurologically relevant tissues (brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma) were obtained from a recently published study. MEASUREMENTS Multivariate linear analysis was then used to evaluate the potential interaction effect between coffee/tea intake and proteins polygenetic risk score (PRS) on the risks of anxiety and depression controlling for age, sex, Townsend deprivation index (TDI), smoke, drinking and education level. RESULTS 34 coffee intake-proteins interactions and 15 tea intake-proteins interactions were observed in anxiety individuals, such as coffee intake-c-Jun interaction (β=0.0169, P=4.131×10-3), coffee intake-Fas interaction (β=-0.0190, P=8.132×10-4), tea intake-sL-Selectin interaction (β=0.0112, P=5.412×10-3) and tea intake-IL-1F6 (β=0.0083, P=4.471×10-2). 25 coffee intake-proteins and 14 tea intake-proteins interactions were observed in depression individuals, including coffee intake- IL-1 sRI (β=0.0171, P=4.888×10-3) and coffee intake-NXPH1 interaction (β=0.0156, P=9.819×10-3), tea intake-COLEC12 interaction (β=0.0127, P=3.280×10-3), and tea intake-Layilin interaction (β=0.0117, P=7.926×10-3). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested the important role of multiple proteins in neurologically relevant tissues in the associations between coffee/tea intake and psychiatry diseases, providing entry points to explore the mechanisms underlying anxiety and depression.

Abstract
As coffee consumption is on the rise, and the global coffee production creates an excess of 23 million tons of waste per year, a revolutionary transition towards a circular economy via the transformation and valorization of the main by-products from its cultivation and preparation (Coffee Husk (CH), Coffee Pulp (CP), Coffee Silverskin (CS), and Spent Coffee Grounds (SCG)) is inspiring researchers around the world. The recent growth of scholarly publications in the field and the emerging applications of coffee by-products published in these scientific papers encourages a systematic review to identify the knowledge structure, research hotspots, and to discuss the challenges and future directions. This paper displays a comprehensive scientometric analysis based on 108 articles with a high level of influence in the field of coffee by-products and their applications. According to our analysis, the research in this field shows an explosive growth since 2017, clustered in five core applications: bioactive compounds, microbial transformation, environmental applications, biofuels from thermochemical processes, and construction materials.

Abstract
Coffee is a beverage that is very popular all over the world. Its pro-health effect has been demonstrated in many publications. This drink can counteract the effects of oxidative stress thanks to its antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to collect data on the content of microelements with antioxidant activity (manganese, zinc, copper, iron) in coffee infusions, taking into account various factors. The study considered publications from the years 2000–2020 found in Google Scholar and PubMed databases. It was noted that coffee can provide up to 13.7% of manganese requirements per serving, up to 4.0% and 3.1% of zinc requirements for women and men, up to 2.7% and 2.1% of copper requirements for women and men, and up to 0.4% and 0.6% of iron requirements for women and men. Coffee infusions can also be a source of fluoride (up to 2.5%), chromium (up to 0.4% of daily intake for women and 0.2% for men), and cobalt (up to 0.1%). There are no data in the literature regarding the content of selenium in coffee infusions. The origin of coffee beans and the type of water used (especially regarding fluoride) may have an impact on the content of minerals in infusions. The brewing method does not seem to play an important role. As it is a very popular beverage, coffee can additionally enrich the diet with such micronutrients as manganese, zinc, and copper. This seems beneficial due to their antioxidant properties, however the bioavailability of these elements of coffee should be taken into account. It seems necessary to carry out more research in this area.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether higher coffee intake may reduce the risk of renal cell cancer (RCC) associated with lead (Pb) and other heavy metals with known renal toxicity. METHODS We conducted a nested case-control study of male smokers (136 RCC cases and 304 controls) within the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study. Cases diagnosed with RCC at 5 or more years following cohort enrollment were matched to controls on age (± 7 years) and whole blood draw date (± 30 days). Conditional logistic regression (using two-sided tests) was used to test for main effects and additive models of effect modification. RESULTS After a mean follow-up of 16.3 years, coffee consumption was not significantly associated with renal cell cancer risk, when adjusting for blood concentrations of Cd, Hg, and Pb and RCC risk factors (age, smoking, BMI, and systolic blood pressure) (p-trend, 0.134). The association with above median blood Pb and RCC (HR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.06, 2.85) appeared to be modified by coffee consumption, such that RCC risk among individuals with both increased coffee intake and higher blood lead concentration were more than threefold higher RCC risk (HR = 3.40, 95% CI 1.62, 7.13; p-trend, 0.003). CONCLUSION Contrary to our initial hypothesis, this study suggests that heavy coffee consumption may increase the previously identified association between higher circulating lead (Pb) concentrations and increased RCC risk. Improved assessment of exposure, including potential trace element contaminants in coffee, is needed.

Abstract
Coffee melanoidins are generated by the Maillard reaction during the thermal processes occurring in the journey of coffee from the plant to the cup (during drying and roasting). Melanoidins, the brown pigments formed as the end products of this reaction, have been reported in cascara, silverskin, spent coffee grounds, and coffee brew. The latter is one of the main natural sources of melanoidins of the daily diet worldwide. However, their presence in coffee by-products has been recently described. These complex macromolecules possess multiple health-promoting properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, dietary fiber effect, and prebiotic capacity, which make them very interesting from a nutritional point of view. In addition, they have a great impact on the sensory profile of foods and their acceptance by the consumers. The present study is a descriptive, narrative, mini-review about the nature, structure, digestibility, properties (sensory, nutritional, and health-promoting), safety and regulatory status of melanoidins from the coffee brew and its by-products with a special emphasis on the latter.

Abstract
Ovarian dysfunction has an intrauterine origin, and prenatal caffeine exposure (PCE) could lead to abnormal follicle counts in offspring after birth. However, the effect of PCE on offspring ovarian function and its mechanism of intrauterine programming have not been reported thus far. In this study, pregnant Wistar rats were intragastrically administered caffeine (30 and 120 mg/kg·d) at gestational days 9-20 (GD9-20). Certain tests were performed on the blood, ovaries and hypothalamus of female offspring at different time points. PCE female offspring had ovarian dysfunction in adulthood compared with the control. Further results showed that in utero ovarian morphological development and estradiol synthesis were inhibited but rapidly increased during puberty in the PCE group. The histone 3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac) level of the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) promoter region and its expression were decreased in the ovary, which was due to exposure to high levels of fetal blood corticosterone, and the H3K27ac level of IGF1 and its expression shifted to increase after birth with a decrease in serum corticosterone levels. Chronic stress led to increased serum corticosterone levels in adult offspring, whereas ovarian morphological development, the H3K27ac level of IGF1 and its expression, and estradiol synthesis were significantly inhibited. Moreover, the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis was increased in the early postnatal period of PCE offspring, and chronic stress reversed these changes. In the KGN cell line, it was found that cortisol could promote the translocation of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) into the nucleus and upregulate histone deacetylase 10 (HDAC10) to inhibit the H3K27ac level of IGF1 and its expression and estradiol synthesis. In summary, PCE is associated with ovarian dysfunction in female adult offspring, and the potential mechanism is related to intrauterine high glucocorticoid exposure by activating the GR and recruiting HDAC10 to affect ovarian glucocorticoid-IGF1 axis programming and to inhibit estradiol synthesis.
