Abstract
The cascade catalysis of deoxynivalenol (DON) by dehydrogenases and aldo/keto reductases from bacteria is an eco-friendly detoxification strategy. However, the instability of most reported first-step DON-degrading enzymes limits their practical applications. In this study, a strain Pelagibacterium nitratireducens ZH15 with high DON degradation ability was obtained using a novel dehydrogenase activity-based screening method. One dehydrogenase ZHDDH4 capable of DON ketonization and one aldo/keto reductase ZHAKR8 capable of 3-keto-DON reduction were identified from P. nitratireducens ZH15. M526E, the single mutant of ZHDDH4 constructed in the current study, could completely degrade 50 μg/mL DON in 48 h with PQQ as the hydrogen acceptor, and ZHAKR8 could degrade 73.12 % of 30 μg/mL 3-keto-DON in 2 h with NADPH as the cofactor. Subsequently, structure-based and computer-aided engineering was implemented to improve the thermostability of dehydrogenase M526E. Through this strategy, the best double mutant M526E/N105M showed enhanced thermostability with 59.87 % and 10.62 % of DON removal ratio after being incubated at 60 and 70 °C for 1 h, respectively. M526E/N105M can also degrade 15-acetyl-DON and nivalenol. M526E/N105M will be appropriate for the practical applications of DON and its derivatives detoxification because of its high activity and thermostability. Collectively, the simple and effective strategies for mining novel microorganisms and enhancing the thermostability of DON-degrading enzymes in the current study enrich the research on DON and its derivatives decontamination.

Abstract
Patulin (PAT), a highly toxic mycotoxin, poses significant health risks due to its contamination of fruits and their derived products. Recent biological strategies for eliminating PAT mainly focus on elucidating the molecular detoxification processes of antagonistic microorganisms using omics technologies. However, there is still a scarcity of research on the rapid screening and catalytic mechanisms of bio-enzymes. In this study, a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (MgSDR1) capable of degrading PAT is rapidly identified from Meyerozyma guilliermondii by integrating transcriptomics with molecular docking. MgSDR1 completely degrades PAT into E-ascladiol within 2 h within the presence of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). Biodegradation efficiency is influenced by temperature, pH, enzyme/substrate concentrations, metal ions, and organic reagents. Notably, MgSDR1 shows efficient PAT degradation ability in fresh pear juice while maintaining key quality parameters, such as color parameters, pH, polyphenol oxidase activity, the contents of vitamin C, total phenols, titratable acidity, and soluble solids. The degradation process enhances the antioxidant capacity and enriches the aromatic compounds of the juice. Furthermore, site-directed mutagenesis reveals the essential role of the catalytic triad (Ser174-Tyr188-Lys192) in MgSDR1 activity. This study provides an efficient methodology for screening PAT-degrading enzymes and lays a theoretical foundation for the removal of mycotoxins in the food industry.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol ( DON) is one of the most harmful mycotoxins in food or feed or Traditional Chinese Medicine. An efficient and applicable method for the detoxification of DON is urgently developed. 1152 strains were isolated from the intestinal contents of crucian. Morganella morganii YC12-C3 and Enterococcus faecalis YC12-C10 were screened with the highest degradation rate of DON via HPLC methods. The optimal degradation condition of YC12-C3 and YC12-C10 is co-cultured 24 h and 36 h at 28 ℃ in LB medium with pH 7 and 1.0% inoculation dosage, respectively. LC-MS/MS and 1H NMR results show that YC12-C10 and YC12-C3 can transform DON to 3-deoxy-6-demethanol-DON, a new metabolite biotransformed from DON, by deoxidization at C3 hydroxy and de-methanal reaction at methanol moiety of C6. In addition, the DON-degradation in agricultural material assay showed that YC12-C10 and YC12-C3 can degrade 150 μg·kg-1 DON in Coix lacryma-jobi, with a degradation rate of 68.89% and 59.94%, respectively. This result shows that YC12-C10 and YC12-C3 have a sound efficiency in removing DON ability in Coix lacryma-jobi, providing a new strain resource and application technique for biological detoxification of DON in food or feed or TCM industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Seed-associated microorganisms play crucial roles in maintaining plant health by providing nutrients and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, their functions in seed germination and disease resistance remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the microbial community assembly features and functional profiles of the spermosphere and endosphere microbiomes related to germinated and ungerminated seeds of Astragalus mongholicus by using amplicon and shotgun metagenome sequencing techniques. Additionally, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between beneficial microorganisms and seed germination through both in vitro and in vivo pot experiments. RESULTS Our findings revealed that germination significantly enhances the diversity of microbial communities associated with seeds. This increase in diversity is driven through environmental ecological niche differentiation, leading to the enrichment of potentially beneficial probiotic bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Pantoea. Conversely, Fusarium was consistently enriched in ungerminated seeds. The co-occurrence network patterns revealed that the microbial communities within germinated and ungerminated seeds presented distinct structures. Notably, germinated seeds exhibit more complex and interconnected networks, particularly for bacterial communities and their interactions with fungi. Metagenome analysis showed that germinated seed spermosphere soil had more functions related to pathogen inhibition and cellulose degradation. Through a combination of culture-dependent and germination experiments, we identified Fusarium solani as the pathogen. Consistent with the metagenome analysis, germination experiments further demonstrated that bacteria associated with pathogen inhibition and cellulose degradation could promote seed germination and vigor. Specifically, Paenibacillus sp. significantly enhanced A. mongholicus seed germination and plant growth. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed the dynamics of seed-associated microorganisms during seed germination and confirmed their ecological role in promoting A. mongholicus seed germination by suppressing pathogens and degrading cellulose. This study offers a mechanistic understanding of how seed microorganisms facilitate successful seed germination, highlighting the potential for leveraging these microbial communities to increase plant health. Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), a type-B trichothecene mycotoxin, is primarily produced by Fusarium species and widely pollutes wheat and other grains. Enzymatic treatment of DON has been widely studied in recent years. Here, we present the biochemical identification of the DON dehydrogenase from Pelagibacterium sp. SCN 63-126 (Pe DDH). After removing the signal peptide, Pe DDH is effectively expressed in its soluble form. Biochemical identification indicates that the optimal temperature and pH of Pe DDH against DON is 35 ℃ and pH 8.5. Furthermore, Pe DDH is activated significantly in the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+, and Cu2+, and alternatively activated by pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), phenazine methosulfate (PMS), and 2, 6-dichlorophenolindophenol (DCPIP). When PQQ, PMS, and DCPIP are combined, Pe DDH (60 µg/mL) effectively degrads DON (150 µM) in just 5 min, suggesting a synergistic effect of three cofactors on DON degradation. All these results suggest a great potential of Pe DDH in the control of DON contamination.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a common mycotoxin observed in cereal grains, and feed contamination poses health risks to pigs. Biological antidotes, such as synbiotics (SYNs), have garnered attention for mitigating DON toxicity. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of SYNs by comparing the blood biochemistry, histology, and gut microbiome of weaned piglets. A 4-week trial was conducted on 32 weaned piglets. After a week of diet and environmental adaptation, the pigs were divided into four groups: (1) control (CON, n = 8); (2) SYN (n = 8); (3) DON (n = 8); and (4) DON+SYN (n = 8). The SYN supplementation of weaned piglets increased the final body weight (21.71 ± 0.93 vs. 20.73 ± 0.84), average daily gain (0.38 ± 0.02 vs. 0.34 ± 0.02), and gain-to-feed ratio (0.49 ± 0.04 vs. 0.43 ± 0.02), and decreased the feed conversion ratio (2.14 ± 0.14 vs. 2.39 ± 0.13) compared to the DON group. A high dose of DON induced liver and colon fibrosis and liver and cecum apoptosis, which were alleviated by SYNs. Glucose in the DON group (84.9 ± 3.7) was significantly lower than in the control (101.3 ± 4.2). Additionally, both the DON and DON+SYN groups exhibited higher creatine (0.9 ± 0.0 and 0.9 ± 0.1) and lower cholesterol (88.3 ± 3.2 and 90.0 ± 4.8) levels (p < 0.05). In conclusion, SYNs alleviated DON toxicity, indicating its potential as an antidote for specific biomarkers.

Abstract
Secondary metabolic products of molds, called mycotoxins, negatively affect animal health and production. They constitute a significant problem in veterinary and medical sciences, and their presence has been confirmed in feed all over the world. Applying appropriate agricultural practices and ensuring proper storage conditions significantly reduces the contamination of agricultural products with mycotoxins. However, this does not guarantee that raw materials are completely free from contamination. Many detoxification methods are currently used, but their insufficient effectiveness and negative impact on the quality of the raw material subjected to them significantly limits their usefulness. The positive results of eliminating mycotoxins from many products have been proven by the specific properties of microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, and fungi) and the enzymes they produce. Biological detoxification methods seem to offer the most promising opportunities to solve the problem of the presence of mycotoxins in animal food. This work, based on literature data, presents the health risks to farm animals consuming mycotoxins with feed and discusses the biological methods of their purification.

Abstract
This study systematically investigated the effects of temperature changes on the degradation of antibiotics in soil, as well as the alterations in microbial community structure and aggregation, through a field warming experiment in a greenhouse. Compared to non-warming soil, the warming treatment significantly accelerated the degradation rate of tetracyclines during soil freezing and mitigated the impact of environmental fluctuations on soil microbial communities. The greenhouse environment promoted the growth and reproduction of a wide range of microbial taxa, but the abundance of Myxococcota was positively correlated with antibiotic concentrations in both treatments, suggesting a potential specific association with antibiotic degradation processes. Long-term warming in the greenhouse led to a shift in the assembly process of soil microbial communities, with a decrease in dispersal limitation and an increase in the drift process. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis revealed a more loosely structured microbial community in the greenhouse soil, along with the emergence of new characteristic taxa. Notably, more than 60% of the key taxa that connected the co-occurrence networks in both groups belonged to rare taxa, indicating that rare taxa play a crucial role in maintaining community structure and function.

Abstract
Amino acids are essential organic compounds in composting products. However, the mechanism underlying the amino acid metabolism during composting remains unclear. This study aims at exploring the impacts of inoculating cellulose-degrading microbes on amino acid metabolism during composting with mulberry branches and silkworm excrements. Cellulose-degrading microbial inoculation enhanced amino acid degradation by 18%-43% by increasing protease and sucrase activities and stimulating eight amino acid degradation pathways from the initial to thermophilic phases, with Enterococcus, Saccharomonospora, Corynebacterium being the dominant bacterial genera, but stimulated amino acid production by 54% by increasing sucrase and urease activities, decreasing β-glucosidase activities, and stimulating twenty-two amino acid synthesis pathways at the mature phase, with Thermobifida, Devosia, and Cellulosimicrobium being the dominant bacterial genera. The results suggest that cellulose-degrading microbial inoculation enhances amino acid degradation from the initial to thermophilic phases and biosynthesis at the mature phase, thereby improving the quality of organic fertilizer.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a global contaminant found in crop residues, grains, feed, and animal and human food. Biodegradation is currently the best solution for addressing DON pollution. However, efficient detoxification bacteria or enzymes that can be applied in complex matrices are lacking. The aim of this study was to isolate a DON-detoxifying probiotic strain with a high degradation rate, a good safety profile, and a clear genetic background. One hundred and eight bacterial strains were isolated from 300 samples collected from a school farm and surrounding livestock farms. A new DON-degrading strain, Lactobacillus rhamnosus MY-1 (L. rhamnosus MY-1), with a degradation rate of 93.34% after 48 h and a comprehensive degradation method, was identified. Then, MY-1 at a concentration of 1 × 108 CFU/mL was administered to mice in a chronic intoxication experiment for 28 days. The experimental group showed significantly higher weight gain and exhibited good production performance compared to the control group. The length of the ileal villi in the experimental group was significantly longer than that in the control group. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines decreased, while the expression of anti-inflammatory factors increased in the experimental group. Whole-genome analysis revealed that most of the MY-1 genes were involved in carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport, with a cluster of secondary metabolite genes encoding antimicrobial properties. In summary, this study successfully identified a Lactobacillus strain with good safety performance, high DON degradation efficiency, and a clear genetic background, providing a new approach for the treatment of DON contamination.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a prevalent mycotoxin that primarily contaminates cereal crops and animal feed, posing a significant risk to human and animal health. In recent years, an increasing number of Devosia strains have been identified as DON degradation bacteria, and significant efforts have been made to explore their potential applications in the food and animal feed industries. However, the characteristics and mechanisms of DON degradation in Devosia strains are still unclear. In this study, we identified a novel DON degrading bacterium, Devosia sp. D-G15 (D-G15), from soil samples. The major degradation products of DON in D-G15 were 3-keto-DON, 3-epi-DON and an unidentified product, compound C. The cell viability assay showed that the DON degradation product of D-G15 revealed significantly reduced toxicity to HEK293T cells compared to DON. Three enzymes for DON degradation were further identified, with G15-DDH converting DON to 3-keto-DON and G15-AKR1/G15-AKR6 reducing 3-keto-DON to 3-epi-DON. Interestingly, genome comparison of Devosia strains showed that the pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) synthesis gene cluster is a unique feature of DON degradation strains. Subsequently, adding PQQ to the cultural media of Devosia strains without PQQ synthesis genes endowed them with DON degradation activity. Furthermore, a novel DON-degrading enzyme G13-DDH (<30% homology with known DON dehydrogenase) was identified from a Devosia strain that lacks PQQ synthesis ability. In summary, a novel DON degrading Devosia strain and its key enzymes were identified, and PQQ production was found as a distinct feature among Devosia strains with DON degradation activity, which is important for developing Devosia strain-based technology in DON detoxification.

Abstract
Post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) is a globally significant threat to the swine industry. Historically, antibiotics as well as high doses of zinc oxide and copper sulfate have been commonly used to control PWD. However, the development of bacterial resistance and environmental pollution have created an interest in alternative strategies. In recent years, the research surrounding these alternative strategies and the mechanisms of piglet diarrhea has been continually updated. Mechanically, diarrhea in piglets is a result of an imbalance in intestinal fluid and electrolyte absorption and secretion. In general, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and diarrheal viruses are known to cause an imbalance in the absorption and secretion of intestinal fluids and electrolytes in piglets, resulting in diarrhea when Cl- secretion-driven fluid secretion surpasses absorptive capacity. From a perspective of feedstuffs, factors that contribute to imbalances in fluid absorption and secretion in the intestines of weaned piglets include high levels of crude protein (CP), stimulation by certain antigenic proteins, high acid-binding capacity (ABC), and contamination with deoxynivalenol (DON) in the diet. In response, efforts to reduce CP levels in diets, select feedstuffs with lower ABC values, and process feedstuffs using physical, chemical, and biological approaches are important strategies for alleviating PWD in piglets. Additionally, the diet supplementation with additives such as vitamins and natural products can also play a role in reducing the diarrhea incidence in weaned piglets. Here, we examine the mechanisms of absorption and secretion of intestinal fluids and electrolytes in piglets, summarize nutritional strategies to control PWD in piglets from the perspective of feeds, and provide new insights towards future research directions.

Corn steep liquor (CSL) is an acidic byproduct of the corn starch industry, and DON is concentrated in CSL once the material is contaminated. In this work, a Pichia kudriavzevii strain that could remove DON from CSL was isolated and characterized. The strain P. kudriavzevii E4-205 showed detoxifying activity in a pH range of 4.0~7.0 and temperature of 25~42 °C, and 39.4% DON was reduced by incubating this strain in CSL supernatant diluted by 2-fold (5 μg/mL DON) for 48 h at pH 5.0 and 30 °C. Further mechanism studies showed that P. kudriavzevii E4-205 could adsorb DON by the cell wall and degrade DON by intracellular enzymes with NADH as a cofactor. The degradation product was identified as 3,7,8,15-tetrahydroxyscirpene by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. DON adsorption by inactivated cells was characterized, and the adsorption followed pseudo first-order kinetics. This study revealed a novel mechanism by which microbes degrade DON and might serve as a guide for the development of DON biological detoxification methods.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is the most widespread mycotoxin contaminant hazardous to human and animal health globally. It acts as a crucial virulence factor to stimulate the spread of pathogenic Fusarium within wheat plants. Control of DON and Fusarium disease contributes enormously to food safety, which relies on chemical fungicides. Here, we report the biodegradation of DON using a novel soil bacterium, Devosia insulae FS10-7, and its biocontrol effect against Fusarium crown rot. We demonstrated that strain FS10-7 degraded DON to 3-epi-DON by forming a 3-keto-DON intermediate. Such degradation activity can be maintained at a wide range of pH (4 to 10) and temperature (16 to 42°C) values under aerobic conditions. Notably, strain FS10-7 exhibited practical inhibitory effects on Fusarium crown rot disease caused by F. graminearum and F. pseudograminearum in the in vitro Petri dish test under laboratory conditions and the pot experiment under greenhouse conditions. The mechanisms underlying the biocontrol ability of strain FS10-7 were preliminarily investigated to be associated with its high DON-degrading activity rather than direct antagonism. These results establish the foundation to develop further bioagents capable of biodegrading mycotoxins in cereals and derived products and, accordingly, biocontrol plant diseases caused by DON-producing pathogens.

Abstract
Infestation of cereal fields with toxigenic Fusarium species is identified as an environmental source for the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON). During rain events, DON may be washed off from infested plants and enter the soil, where microbial transformation may occur. Although some studies showed DON transformation potential of soil microbial communities in liquid soil extracts, these findings can not be transferred to environmental conditions. Accordingly, microbial transformation of DON in soil has to be investigated under realistic conditions, e.g., microcosms mimicking field situations. In this study, we investigated the potential of soil microbial communities to transform DON in six different agricultural soils at two levels (0.5 and 5 µg g-1). The dissipation and the formation of transformation products were investigated in a period of 35 days and compared to a sterilized control. In addition, we measured soil respiration and applied the phospholipid-derived fatty acid (PLFA) analysis to assess whether soil microbial community characteristics are related to the microbial transformation potential. Dissipation of DON in non-sterilized soils was fast (50% dissipation within 0.6-3.7 days) compared to the sterile control where almost no dissipation was observed. Thus, dissipation was mainly attributed to microbial transformation. We verified that small amounts of DON are transformed to 3-keto-deoxynivalenol (3-keto-DON) and 3-epi-deoxynivalenol (3-epi-DON), which were not detectable after 16-day incubation, indicating further transformation processes. There was a trend towards faster transformation in soils with active and large microbial communities and low fungi-to-bacteria ratio.

Abstract
Trichothecenes are Fusarium mycotoxins with sesquiterpenoid structure, which are widely occurred in grains. Due to high efficiency and environmental friendliness, biological detoxification methods have been of great interest to treat this global food and feed safety concern. This review summarized the biological detoxification methods of trichothecenes from three aspects, biosorption, biotransformation and biotherapy. The detoxification efficiency, characteristics, mechanisms and limitations of different strategies were discussed in detail. Computer-aided design will bring a new research paradigm for more efficient discovery of biodetoxifier. Integrating different detoxification approaches assisted with computational tools will become a promising research direction in the future, which will help to maximize the detoxification effect, or provide precise detoxification programs for the coexistence of various toxins at different levels in actual production. In addition, technical and regulatory issues in practical application were also discussed. These findings contribute to the exploration of efficient, applicable and sustainable methods for trichothecenes detoxification, ensuring the safety of food and feed to reduce the deleterious effects of trichothecenes on humans and animals.

Abstract
Bio-enzymes have shown broad application prospects in controlling mycotoxins due to their strong specificity, fast reaction rate and mild reaction conditions. However, the number of enzymes isolated, purified and characterized to degrade patulin (PAT) is limited. We expressed an aldo-keto reductase (MgAKR) from Meyerozyma guilliermondii in Escherichia coli. The results demonstrated that the purified MgAKR could convert PAT into ascladiol in vitro with NADPH serving as a coenzyme. Adding 300 μg/mL MgAKR resulted in an 88 % reduction of PAT in fresh pear juice without affecting its quality in the biodegradation process. The site-directed mutagenesis suggested that the interaction between MgAKR and PAT occurred through the active sites of Lys242 and Leu240. This study serves as a valuable theoretical reference for the development of enzymes aimed at detoxifying PAT in fruit and their derivatives.

Abstract
Due to the severe health risks for human and animal caused by the intake of toxic deoxynivalenol (DON) derived from Fusarium species, elimination DON in food and feed has been initiated as a critical issue. Enzymatic cascade catalysis by dehydrogenase and aldo-keto reductase represents a fascinating strategy for DON detoxification. Here, one quinone-dpendent alcohol dehydrogenase DADH oxidized DON into less-toxic 3-keto-DON and NADPH-dependent aldo-keto reductase AKR13B3 reduced 3-keto-DON into relatively non-toxic 3-epi-DON were identified from Devosia strain A6-243, indicating that degradation of DON on C3 are two-step sequential cascade processes. To establish the bifunctions, fusion enzyme linking DADH and AKR13B3 was successfully assembled to promote one-step DON degradations with accelerated specific activity and efficiency, resulting 93.29 % of DON removal rate in wheat sample. Three-dimensional simulation analysis revealed that the bifunctional enzyme forms an artificial intramolecular channel to minimize the distance of intermediate from DADH to AKR13B3 for two-step enzymatic reactions, and thereby accelerates this enzymatic process. As the first report of directing single step DON detoxification by an interesting bifunctional artificial enzyme, this work revealed a facile and eco-friendly approach to detoxify DON with application potential and gave valuable insights into execute other mycotoxin detoxification for ensuring food safety.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), one of the most widespread mycotoxins in food and feed, poses a persistent health threat to humans and farm animals, and is difficult to eliminate. The utilization of the biotransformation mechanism by microorganisms to detoxify DON is a promising strategy. Although individual strains are capable of DON degradation, their isolation and purification are challenging and time-consuming. Recently, the microbial consortia concept has been proposed, owing to their ability to perform more complex tasks and are more tolerant to environmental changes than individual strains or species. In this study, the novel microbial consortia C1 that could efficiently convert DON to de-epoxy DON (DOM-1) was screened from the cecum contents of ducks. After 24 h anaerobic incubation, 100 μg/ml DON was completely degraded by C1. In vitro, C1 can effectively degrade DON in corn steep liquor (CSL) with an efficiency of 49.44% within 14 days. Furthermore, C1 effectively alleviated the DON poisoning in mice. After C1 treatment, the serum DON level decreased by 40.39%, and the reduction in serum total protein and albumin levels were mitigated. Additionally, C1 is effective in protecting the mouse liver against 5 mg/kg DON. These findings suggest that C1 could be a promising DON biological detoxifier and provide novel microbial resources for preventing DON contamination.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), the most widely distributed mycotoxin worldwide, causes severe health risks for humans and animals. Quinone-dependent dehydrogenase derived from Devosia strain A6-243 (DADH) can degrade DON into less toxic 3-keto-DON and then aldo-keto reductase AKR13B3 can reduce 3-keto-DON into relatively nontoxic 3-epi-DON. However, the poor catalytic efficiency of DADH made it unsuitable for practical applications, and it has become the rate-limiting step of the two-step enzymatic cascade catalysis. Here, structure-guided steric hindrance engineering was employed to enhance the catalytic efficiency of DADH. After the steric hindrance engineering, the best mutant, V429G/N431V/T432V/L434V/F537A (M5-1), showed an 18.17-fold increase in specific activity and an 11.04-fold increase in catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) compared with that of wild-type DADH. Structure-based computational analysis provided information on the increased catalytic efficiency in the directions that attenuated steric hindrance, which was attributed to the reshaped substrate-binding pocket with an expanded catalytic binding cavity and a favorable attack distance. Tunnel analysis suggested that reshaping the active cavity by mutation might alter the shape and size of the enzyme tunnels or form one new enzyme tunnel, which might contribute to the improved catalytic efficiency of M5-1. These findings provide a promising strategy to enhance the catalytic efficiency by steric hindrance engineering.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin primarily produced by Fusarium graminearum (F. graminearum), is widely present in food and feed, posing great hazards to human and livestock health. In this study, a strain of Acinetobacter pittii (A. pittii) S12 capable of degrading DON was isolated from soil samples and identified through morphological characterization, biochemistry analysis, and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. The results of HPLC-MS indicated that the degradation products underwent a conversion from [M-H]- to [M+CH3CO], with concomitant transformation of the hydroxyl group into an acetyl moiety. Based on transcriptome sequencing analysis, the acyltransferase encoded by DLK06_RS13370 was predicted to be the pivotal gene responsible for DON biotransformation. The result of molecular docking analysis suggest a high affinity between the enzyme and DON. The recombinant protein encoded by DLK06_RS13370 was expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and demonstrated the capacity to catalyze the conversion of DON into 3-Acetyl-deoxynivalenol (3-ADON), as confirmed by HPLC analysis. In conclusion, our findings confirm that the acyltransferase encoded by DLK06-RS13370 is responsible for the acetylation of DON. This sheds light on the co-occurrence of DON and its acetyl-derivatives in wheat-based products. DATA AVAILABILITY: Not applicable.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the main types of B trichothecenes, and it causes health-related issues in humans and animals and imposes considerable challenges to food and feed safety globally each year. This review investigates the global hazards of DON, describes the occurrence of DON in food and feed in different countries, and systematically uncovers the mechanisms of the various toxic effects of DON. For DON pollution, many treatments have been reported on the degradation of DON, and each of the treatments has different degradation efficacies and degrades DON by a distinct mechanism. These treatments include physical, chemical, and biological methods and mitigation strategies. Biodegradation methods include microorganisms, enzymes, and biological antifungal agents, which are of great research significance in food processing because of their high efficiency, low environmental hazards, and drug resistance. And we also reviewed the mechanisms of biodegradation methods of DON, the adsorption and antagonism effects of microorganisms, and the different chemical transformation mechanisms of enzymes. Moreover, nutritional mitigation including common nutrients (amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and microelements) and plant extracts was discussed in this review, and the mitigation mechanism of DON toxicity was elaborated from the biochemical point of view. These findings help explore various approaches to achieve the best efficiency and applicability, overcome DON pollution worldwide, ensure the sustainability and safety of food processing, and explore potential therapeutic options with the ability to reduce the deleterious effects of DON in humans and animals.

Abstract
In this study, a dual-member bacterial consortium with the ability to oxidize deoxynivalenol (DON) to 3-keto-DON, designated SD, was first screened from the feces of Tenebrio molitor larvae. This consortium consisted of Pseudomonas sp. SD17-1 and Devosia sp. SD17-2, as determined by 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis. A temperature of 30 °C, a pH of 8.0-9.0, and an initial inoculum concentration ratio of Devosia to Pseudomonas of 0.1 were optimal single-factor parameters for the DON oxidation activity of the bacterial consortium SD. Genome-based bioinformatics analysis revealed the presence of an intact PQQ biosynthesis operon (pqqFABCDEG) and four putative pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) genes in the genomes of Pseudomonas strain SD17-1 and Devosia strain SD17-2, respectively. Biochemical analyses further confirmed the PQQ-producing phenotype of Pseudomonas and the DON-oxidizing enzymatic activities of two of four PQQ-dependent ADHs in Devosia. The addition of PQQ-containing a cell-free fermentation supernatant from Pseudomonas activated DON-oxidizing activity of Devosia. In summary, as members of the bacterial consortium SD, Pseudomonas and Devosia play indispensable and complementary roles in SD's oxidation of DON. Specifically, Pseudomonas is responsible for producing the necessary PQQ cofactor, whereas Devosia expresses the PQQ-dependent DON dehydrogenase, together facilitating the oxidation of DON.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is frequently detected in cereals and cereal-based products and has a negative impact on human and animal health. In this study, an unprecedented DON-degrading bacterial isolate D3_3 was isolated from a sample of Tenebrio molitor larva feces. A 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis and genome-based average nucleotide identity comparison clearly revealed that strain D3_3 belonged to the species Ketogulonicigenium vulgare. This isolate D3_3 could efficiently degrade 50 mg/L of DON under a broad range of conditions, such as pHs of 7.0-9.0 and temperatures of 18-30 °C, as well as during aerobic or anaerobic cultivation. 3-keto-DON was identified as the sole and finished DON metabolite using mass spectrometry. In vitro toxicity tests revealed that 3-keto-DON had lower cytotoxicity to human gastric epithelial cells and higher phytotoxicity to Lemna minor than its parent mycotoxin DON. Additionally, four genes encoding pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-dependent alcohol dehydrogenases in the genome of isolate D3_3 were identified as being responsible for the DON oxidation reaction. Overall, as a highly potent DON-degrading microbe, a member of the genus Ketogulonicigenium is reported for the first time in this study. The discovery of this DON-degrading isolate D3_3 and its four dehydrogenases will allow microbial strains and enzyme resources to become available for the future development of DON-detoxifying agents for food and animal feed.

Abstract
Biological degradation of mycotoxins is a promising environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical and physical detoxification methods. To date, a lot of microorganisms able to degrade them have been described; however, the number of studies determining degradation mechanisms and irreversibility of transformation, identifying resulting metabolites, and evaluating in vivo efficiency and safety of such biodegradation is significantly lower. At the same time, these data are crucial for the evaluation of the potential of the practical application of such microorganisms as mycotoxin-decontaminating agents or sources of mycotoxin-degrading enzymes. To date, there are no published reviews, which would be focused only on mycotoxin-degrading microorganisms with the proved irreversible transformation of these compounds into less toxic compounds. In this review, the existing information about microorganisms able to efficiently transform the three most common fusariotoxins (zearalenone, deoxinyvalenol, and fumonisin B1) is presented with allowance for the data on the corresponding irreversible transformation pathways, produced metabolites, and/or toxicity reduction. The recent data on the enzymes responsible for the irreversible transformation of these fusariotoxins are also presented, and the promising future trends in the studies in this area are discussed.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) can affect health and growth performance of pigs, resulting in significant economic losses in swine production. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of glycyrrhizic acid combined with compound probiotics, i.e. Enterococcus faecalis plus Saccharomyces cerevisiae (GAP) on improving growth performance, intestinal health and its fecal microbiota composition change of piglets challenged with DON. A total of 160 42-day-old weaned piglets (Landrace × Large White) were used and the experimental period was 28 d. The results showed that supplementing GAP in the diet significantly improved the growth performance of piglets challenged with DON and alleviate DON-induced intestinal damage by reducing ALT, AST and LDH concentrations in serum, increasing the morphological parameters of jejunum, and decreasing DON residues in serum, liver and feces. Moreover, GAP could significantly decrease the expressions of inflammation and apoptosis genes and proteins (IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, COX-2, Bax, Bcl-2 and Caspase 3), and increase the expressions of tight-junction proteins and nutrient transport factor genes and proteins (ZO-1, Occludin, Claudin-1, ASCT2 and PePT1). In addition, it was also found that GAP supplementation could significantly increase the diversity of gut microbiota, maintain microbial flora balance and promote piglet growth by significantly increasing the abundance of beneficial bacterium such as Lactobacillus and reducing the abundance of harmful bacterium such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1. In conclusion, GAP addition to piglet diets contaminated with DON could significantly promote the health and growth performance of piglets though alleviating DON-induced hazards. This study provided a theoretical basis for the application of GAP to alleviate DON toxicity for animals.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), one of the main mycotoxins with enteric toxicity, genetic toxicity, and immunotoxicity, and is widely found in corn, barley, wheat, and rye. In order to achieve effective detoxification of DON, the least toxic 3-epi-DON (1/357th of the toxicity of DON) was chosen as the target for degradation. Quinone-dependent dehydrogenase (QDDH) reported from Devosia train D6-9 detoxifies DON by converting C3-OH to a ketone group with toxicity of less than 1/10 that of DON. In this study, the recombinant plasmid pPIC9K-QDDH was constructed and successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris GS115. Within 12 h, recombinant QDDH converted 78.46% of the 20 μg/mL DON to 3-keto-DON. Candida parapsilosis ACCC 20221 was screened for its activity in reducing 86.59% of 3-keto-DON within 48 h; its main products were identified as 3-epi-DON and DON. In addition, a two-step method was performed for epimerizing DON: 12 h catalysis by recombinant QDDH and 6 h transformation of the C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221 cell catalyst. The production rates of 3-keto-DON and 3-epi-DON were 51.59% and 32.57%, respectively, after manipulation. Through this study, effective detoxification of 84.16% of DON was achieved, with the products being mainly 3-keto-DON and 3-epi-DON.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deoxynivalenol (DON) produced during the onset of fusarium head blight not only affects the quality and safety of wheat but also causes serious harm to human and livestock health. However, due to the high stability of DON, it is difficult to eliminate it or reduce it naturally after it has been produced. Cold plasma technology is a non-thermophysical processing technology that has been widely used for microbial inactivation and mycotoxin degradation. In this study, the degradation efficiency of double dielectric barrier discharge (DDBD) cold plasma on DON in aqueous solution and wheat was studied; the structures of degradation products of DON and its pathway were clarified, and the effect of DDBD plasma on wheat quality was evaluated. RESULTS Double dielectric barrier discharge cold plasma was used for efficient degradation of DON (0.5 ~ 5 μgmL^-1) solution and achieved a degradation rate of 98.94% within 25 min under the optimal conditions (voltage 100 V, frequency 200 Hz, duty cycle 80%). Furthermore, 10 degradation products (C15 H24 O5 , C15 H22 O6 , C15 H22 O9 , C16 H22 O7 , C15 H20 O7 , C15 H20 O9 , C15 H18 O8 , C15 H22 O5 , C16 H24 O5 , and C15 H18 O9 ) were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOF-MS/MS) combined with Metabolitepilot and Peakview software. The degradation pathway of DON was obtained based on the chemical structures and accurate mass of these products. The DON degradation rate of 61% in wheat was achieved after treatment for 15 min, which slightly affects the moisture content, proteins, and wheat starch. CONCLUSION Applying DDBD to wheat could effectively reduce the level of DON contamination, which provides a theoretical basis for applying cold plasma to the degradation of DON in wheat. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin that contaminates animal feed and crops around the world. DON not only causes significant economic losses, but can also lead diarrhea, vomiting, and gastroenteritis in humans and farm animals. Thus, there is an urgent need to find efficient approaches for DON decontamination in feed and food. However, physical and chemical treatment of DON may affect the nutrients, safety, and palatability of food. By contrast, biological detoxification methods based on microbial strains or enzymes have the advantages of high specificity, efficiency, and no secondary pollution. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the recently developed strategies for DON detoxification and classify their mechanisms. In addition, we identify remaining challenges in DON biodegradation and suggest research directions to address them. In the future, an in-depth understanding of the specific mechanisms through which DON is detoxified will provide an efficient, safe, and economical means for the removal of toxins from food and feed.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, halotolerant bacterium designated as PTR5T was isolated from the roots of rice plants, collected in Ilsan, South Korea. Cells were, aerobic, asporogenous, motile, rod-shaped, white in color, and grew at 5-38 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 5.0-0-8.0 (optimum, 7.0) and tolerates up to 10% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0% NaCl). According to the EZbioCloud server the most closely related Devosia species to strain PTR5T based on 16 S rRNA gene sequence comparison are Devosia crocina (97.4%), followed by D. soli (97.2%), D. lucknowensis (96.9%) and D. marina (96.5%). The respiratory quinone was identified as Q-10. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. C16:0, C18:1 ω7c 11-methyl and summed feature 8 (comprising C18:1 ω7c/C18:1 ω6c) constituted the main cellular fatty acids. The draft genome sequence of strain PTR5T was 3,689,283 bp in size. The average nucleotide identity (ANI), digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and amino acid identity (AAI) values between strain PTR5T and its close relative were 72.8-76.8%, 19-20.7% and 70.3-75%, respectively. The G + C content was 63.7%. Strain PTR5T was able to produce siderophore and indole acetic acid (IAA) in the presence of L-tryptophan. Genes for siderophore production, auxin responsive and tryptophan biosynthesis were present in the genome of novel strain. Also, gene clusters involved in detoxification of various metal pollutants and antibiotics were also revealed in the genome of novel strain PTR5T, this suggest that novel strain can facilitate bioremediation of heavy metals and antibiotics in contaminated areas. This study aimed to determine the detailed taxonomic position of the strain PTR5T using the modern polyphasic approach. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strain PTR5T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Devosia, for which the name Devosia oryzisoli sp. nov. (type strain PTR5T (KCTC 82691T = TBRC 15163T) is proposed.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), produced by Fusarium species, is one of the most common trichothecenes detected in cereals pre- and post-harvest, which poses a great threat to the health of livestock and human beings due to its strong toxicity. In this study, we isolated and characterized two DON-degrading bacterial strains, Bacillus sp. HN117 and Bacillus sp. N22. Both strains could degrade DON efficiently in a wide range of temperatures (from 25 °C to 42 °C) and concentrations (from 10 mg/L to 500 mg/L). After optimization of the degradation conditions, 29.0% DON was eliminated by HN117 in 72 h when it was incubated with 1000 mg/L DON; meanwhile, the DON degradation rate of N22 was boosted notably from 7.41% to 21.21% within 120 h at 500 mg/L DON. Degradation products analysis indicated HN117 was able to transform DON into a new isomer M-DOM, the possible structure of which was deduced based on LC-MS and NMR analysis, and N22 could convert DON into potential low-toxic derivatives norDON E and 9-hydroxymethyl DON lactone. These two strains have the potential to be developed as new biodegrading agents to control DON contamination in food and feed industries.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are fungi-produced secondary metabolites that can contaminate many foods eaten by humans and animals. Deoxynivalenol (DON), which is formed by Fusarium, is one of the most common occurring predominantly in cereal grains and thus poses a significant health risk. When DON is ingested, it can cause both acute and chronic toxicity. Acute signs include abdominal pain, anorexia, diarrhea, increased salivation, vomiting, and malaise. The most common effects of chronic DON exposure include changes in dietary efficacy, weight loss, and anorexia. This review provides a succinct overview of various sources, biosynthetic mechanisms, and genes governing DON production, along with its consequences on human and animal health. It also covers the effect of environmental factors on its production with potential detection, management, and control strategies.

Abstract
Grapevine trunk diseases threaten wine and table grape production worldwide, primarily by reducing yields and, in its advanced stages, causing plant death. Among those diseases, the complex etiology disease known as hoja de malvón (HDM) significantly concerns Argentinian and Uruguayan viticulture. At least four different fungi are associated with this disease, but their role and interactions with other wood microorganisms are understudied. In this sense, analyzing grapevine wood microbiome composition could help understand microbial interactions occurring in HDM onset. Hence, a metatranscriptomic study was performed for the microbiome characterization of mature field-grown Vitis vinifera cv. Malbec, leaf-symptomatic or leaf-asymptomatic. The microbiome was mainly represented by Dothideomycetes and Actinobacteria. In the plant with more marked symptoms, higher levels of the Basidiomycota Arambarria destruens and Phellinus laevigatus were detected. Despite this particular difference, discriminating symptomatic from asymptomatic plants based on the presence or abundance of HDM pathogens was not possible. Alpha diversity and rank-abundance curve analyses indicated that plants with foliar symptoms have lower microbial evenness than asymptomatic plants. The co-occurrence network modeled microbial interkingdom interactions. Molecular data generated in this study will help develop future targeted molecular quantification for specific taxa.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) and its acetylated derivatives such as 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3A-DON) and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15A-DON) are notorious mycotoxins in Fusarium contaminated cereals, which pose a great threat to human and livestock health. The specialized glyoxalase I from Gossypium hirsutum (SPG) can lower the toxicity of 3A-DON by conducting isomerization to transfer C8 carbonyl to C7 and double bond from C9-C10 to C8-C9. Here we report that the substrate-flexible SPG can also recognize 15A-DON and DON, probably following the same isomerization mechanism as that for 3A-DON. The crystallographic, mutagenesis, and biochemical analyses revealed that SPG provides a hydrophobic pocket to accommodate the substrate and residue E167 might serve as the catalytic base. A variant SPGY62A that was constructed based on structure-based protein engineering exhibited elevated catalytic activity towards DON, 3A-DON, and 15A-DON by >70%. Furthermore, variant SPGY62A was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris, whose catalytic activity was also compared to that produced in Escherichia coli. These results provide a blueprint for further protein engineering of SPG and reveal the potential applications of the enzyme in detoxifying DON, 3A-DON and 15A-DON.

Specifically, deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN)-two mycotoxin contaminants with considerable toxicity widely existing in food products-have aroused broad public concerns. Adding to this picture, modified forms of DON and ZEN, have emerged as another potential environmental and health threat, owing to their higher re-transformation rate into parent mycotoxins inducing accumulation of mycotoxin in humans and animals. Given this, a better understanding of the toxicity of modified mycotoxins is urgently needed. Moreover, the lack of toxicity data means a proper risk assessment of modified mycotoxins remains challenging. To better evaluate the toxicity of modified DON and ZEN, we have reviewed the relationship between their structures and toxicities. The toxicity mechanisms behind modified DON and ZEN have also been discussed; briefly, these involve acute, subacute, chronic, and combined toxicities. In addition, this review also addresses the global occurrence of modified DON and ZEN, and summarizes novel methods-including in silico analysis and implementation of relative potency factors-for risk assessment of modified DON and ZEN. Finally, the health risk assessment of modified DON and ZEN has also been discussed comprehensively.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of different species of fungi. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN) and fumonisin B1 (FB1) are the main mycotoxins contaminating animal feedstuffs. These mycotoxins can primarily induce hepatotoxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, consequently cause adverse effects on the health and performance of animals. Therefore, physical, chemical, biological and nutritional regulation approaches have been developed as primary strategies for the decontamination and detoxification of these mycotoxins in the feed industry. Meanwhile, each of these techniques has its drawbacks, including inefficient, costly, or impractically applied on large scale. This review summarized the advantages and disadvantages of the different remediation strategies, as well as updates of the research progress of these strategies for AFB1, DON, ZEN and FB1 control in the feed industry.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by fungi that contaminates many crops, mainly wheat, maize, and barley. It affects animal health, causing intestinal barrier impairment and immunostimulatory effect in low doses and emesis, reduction in feed conversion rate, and immunosuppression in high doses. As it is very hard to completely avoid DON’s production in the field, mitigatory methods have been developed. Biodegradation has become a promising method as new microorganisms are studied and new enzymatic routes are described. Understanding the common root of bacteria with DON degradation capability and the relationship with their place of isolation may bring insights for more effective ways to find DON-degrading microorganisms. The purpose of this review is to bring an overview of the occurrence, regulation, metabolism, and toxicology of DON as addressed in recent publications focusing on animal production, as well as to explore the enzymatic routes described for DON’s degradation by microorganisms and the phylogenetic relationship among them.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a secondary metabolite produced by several Fusarium species that is hazardous to humans and animals after entering food chains. In this study, by adding cofactors, the Devosia strain A6-243 is identified as the DON-transforming bacteria from a bacterial consortium with the ability to biotransform DON of Pseudomonas sp. B6-24 and Devosia strain A6-243, and its effect on the biotransformation process of DON is studied. The Devosia strain A6-243 completely biotransformed 100 μg/mL of DON with the assistance of the exogenous addition of PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) within 48 h and produced non-toxic 3-epi-DON (3-epi-deoxynivalenol), while Pseudomonas sp. B6-24 was not able to biotransform DON, but it had the ability to generate PQQ. Moreover, the Devosia strain A6-243 not only degraded DON, but also exhibited the ability to degrade 3-keto-DON (3-keto-deoxynivalenol) with the same product 3-epi-DON, indicating that DON epimerization by the Devosia strain A6-243 is a two-step enzymatic reaction. The most suitable conditions for the biodegradation process of the Devosia strain A6-243 were a temperature of 16–37 °C and pH 7.0–10, with 15–30 μM PQQ. In addition, the Devosia strain A6-243 was found to completely remove DON (6.7 μg/g) from DON-contaminated wheat. The results presented a reference for screening microorganisms with the ability of biotransform DON and laid a foundation for the development of enzymes for the detoxification of mycotoxins in grain and its products.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to study the enhancement effect of chitosan coating on inhibition of deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation by Litsea cubeba essential oil emulsion during malting. Firstly, the primary emulsion suitable for malting process was screened and the improvement effect of chitosan coating on the properties of primary emulsion was studied. On this basis, chitosan-based Litsea cubeba essential oil emulsion was applied to malting processing. The results showed that the primary emulsion of Litsea cubeba essential oil had good antifungal properties and a minimal effect on the germinability of barley compared with other primary emulsions. The addition of chitosan can improve the physical stability and antifungal ability of the emulsion and reduce the effect of the emulsion on barley germination. When 100 g of chitosan-based Litsea cubeba essential oil emulsion (40 mg/g) was applied to the malting process, the germination rate of barley was 87.7% and the DON concentration of finished malt was reduced to 690 μg/kg, which was 20.9% lower than that of the control. Meanwhile, the other indexes of malt produced by secondary emulsion treatment (after adding chitosan) increased significantly compared with those of malt produced by primary emulsion. This study was of great significance for the application of emulsion to inhibit the accumulation of mycotoxin during malting.

Abstract
Two novel Gram-negative, aerobic, asporogenous, motile, rod-shaped, orange and white pigmented, designated as LEGU1T and G19T, were isolated from the roots of rice plants, collected from Goyang, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on their 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that they belonged to the genus Devosia and formed a different lineage and clusters with different members of the genus Devosia. These strains shared common chemotaxonomic features. In particular, they had Q-10 as the sole quinone, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol as the principal polar lipids and C16:0, C18:1ω7c 11-methyl and summed feature 8 (comprising C18:1ω7c/C18:1ω6c) as the main fatty acids. The draft genome sequences of strains LEGU1T and G19T were 3,524,978 and 3,495,520 bp in size, respectively. Their average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values were 72.8-81.9% and 18.7-25.1%, respectively, with each other and type strains of related species belonging to the genus Devosia, suggesting that these two strains represent novel species. The G + C content of strains LEGU1T and G19T were 62.1 and 63.8%, respectively. Of the two strains, only LEGU1T produced carotenoid and flexirubin-type pigment. Both strains produced siderophore and indole acetic acid (IAA) in the presence of L-tryptophan. Siderophore biosynthesis genes, auxin responsive genes and tryptophan biosynthesis genes were present in their genomes. The present study aimed to determine the detailed taxonomic positions of the strains using the modern polyphasic approach. Based on the results of polyphasic analysis, these strains are suggested to be two novel bacterial species within the genus Devosia. The proposed names are D. rhizoryzae sp. nov., and Devosia oryziradicis sp. nov., respectively. The plant growth promoting effects of these strains suggest that they can be exploited to improve rice crop productivity. The type strain of D. rhizoryzae is LEGU1T (KCTC 82712T = NBRC 114485T) and D. oryziradicis is G19T (KCTC 82688T = NBRC 114842T).

Abstract
The contamination of food and feeds with mycotoxins poses a global health risk to humans and animals, with major economic consequences. Good agricultural and manufacturing practices can help control mycotoxin contamination. Since these actions are not always effective, several methods of decontamination have also been developed, including physical, chemical, and biological methods. Biological decontamination using microorganisms has revealed new opportunities. However, these biological methods require legal regulations and more research before they can be used in food production. Currently, only selected biological methods are acceptable for the decontamination of feed. This review discusses the literature on the use of microorganisms to remove mycotoxins and presents their possible mechanisms of action. Special attention is given to Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast and lactic acid bacteria, and the use of yeast cell wall derivatives.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol, also known as vomitotoxin, is produced by Fusarium, belonging to the group B of the trichothecene family. DON is widely polluted, mainly polluting cereal crops such as wheat, barley, oats, corn and related cereal products, which are closely related to lives of people and animals. At present, there have been articles summarizing DON induced toxicity, biological detoxification and the protective effect of natural products, but there is no systematic summary of this information. In addition to ribosome and endoplasmic reticulum, recent investigations support that mitochondrion is also organelles that DON can damage. DON can't directly act on mitochondria, but can indirectly cause mitochondrial damage and changes through other means. DON can indirectly inhibit mitochondrial biogenesis and mitochondrial electron transport chain activity, ATP production, and mitochondrial transcription and translation. This review will provide the latest progress on mitochondria as the research object, and systematically summarizes all the toxic mechanisms of DON. Here, we discuss DON induced mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis and various mitochondrial toxicity. For the toxicity of DON, many methods have been derived to prevent or reduce the toxicity. Biological detoxification and the antioxidant effect of natural products are potentially effective treatments for DON toxicity.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON), a trichothecene mycotoxin, is one of the most globally prevalent mycotoxins mainly produced by Fusarium species. DON exposure can cause spectrum of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, gastroenteritis, growth retardation, immunosuppression, and intestinal flora disorders in humans and animals. Therefore, the implication of DON degradation technology is of great significance for food safety. Recently, photocatalytic degradation technology has been applied for DON control. However, the toxicity of the intermediates identified in the degradation process was often ignored. In this work, based on previous successful degradation of DON and evaluation of the in vitro toxicity of DON photocatalytic detoxification products (DPDPs), we further studied the in vivo toxicity of DPDPs and mainly explored their effects on intestinal barrier function and intestinal flora in mice. The results demonstrated that the DPDPs treated with photocatalyst for 120 min effectively increased the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins and improved the disorder of gut flora. Meanwhile, compared with DON-exposed mice, the DPDPs reduced the level of inflammation and oxidative stress of intestinal tissue, and improved growth performance, enterohepatic circulation, energy metabolism, and autonomic activity. All the results indicated that the toxicity of the DPDPs irradiated for 120 min was much lower than that of DON or even nontoxic. Therefore, we hope that this photocatalytic degradation technology can be used as a promising tool for the detoxification of mycotoxins.

Abstract
The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON), produced in wheat, barley and maize by Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum, is threatening the health of humans and animals. With its worldwide high incidence in food and feed, mitigation strategies are needed to detoxify DON, maintaining the nutritional value and palatability of decontaminated commodities. A promising technique is biological degradation, where microorganisms are used to biotransform mycotoxins into less toxic metabolites. In this study, bacterial enrichment cultures were screened for their DON detoxification potential, where DON and its potential derivatives were monitored. The residual phytotoxicity was determined through a bioassay using the aquatic plant Lemna minor L. Two bacterial enrichment cultures were found to biotransform DON into a still highly toxic metabolite for plants. Furthermore, a cytotoxic effect was observed on the cellular viability of intestinal porcine epithelial cells. Through liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis, an unknown compound was detected, and tentatively characterized with a molecular weight of 30.0 Da (i.e., CH2O) higher than DON. Metabarcoding of the subsequently enriched bacterial communities revealed a shift towards the genera Sphingopyxis, Pseudoxanthomonas, Ochrobactrum and Pseudarthrobacter. This work describes the discovery of a novel bacterial DON-derived metabolite, toxic to plant and porcine cells.
