Abstract
Environmental exposure to caffeine (CAF) poses potential risks to aquatic ecosystems, affecting non-target species. This study investigated the chronic effects of environmentally relevant CAF concentrations, ranging from 0.16-50 µg/L, on zebrafish behaviour. A Kohonen-type artificial neural network classified zebrafish behaviour into nine behavioural classes based on a set of movement descriptors (mean meander, mean velocity, instantaneous velocity, distance to centre point, mean angular velocity and instantaneous acceleration), while a comprehensive analysis integrated behavioural classes previously defined and biochemical markers of oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, reserve energy content, energetic pathways, and neurotoxicity. The discriminant analysis demonstrated that behaviour descriptors and biomarkers individually explained 38% and 67% of data variation, respectively, while the combination resulted in 19 models with 100% correct diagnosis. One of the models (Model A) seemed to suit the best dose-response relationship, incorporating key biomarkers including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase activities, and behavioural characteristics such as movement distance and velocity. This suggested methodology offers a different approach to evaluating CAF's ecological impact, highlighting behavioural analysis as a valuable complement to traditional ecotoxicological assessments. This study provides a novel framework for understanding organism-level responses to environmental stressors (e.g., several anthropogenic compounds), utilising Mahalanobis distance as an integrative response index. This approach shows promise for broader application in assessing the impact of various aquatic contaminants on aquatic organisms (from bacteria to fish), potentially extending to pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and industrial pollutants.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) show negative impacts on human health. Dietary intake is the predominant way for PAH exposure, of which barbecued food is a crucial contributor. This review aims to provide a comprehensive insight into the formation mechanism, influencing factors, mitigation strategies, and health risks of PAHs in barbecued food. PAHs in barbecued food are formed by Hydrogen abstraction and acetylene addition (HACA) mechanism, Diels-Alder reaction and Maillard reaction, which was influenced by heat source, temperature, cooking time, and the meat type. There are significant differences in PAH concentrations in different barbecued foods, where chrysene dominates among the selected PAH species. To reduce PAHs formation, adding marinades and adopting alternative cooking methods are suggested, which effectively reduce PAH levels by 53 -89 %. In addition, it is estimated that people in countries such as Pakistan has an incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) over 10-5 via barbecued food consumption, indicating potential health risk. This work highlighted that regular monitoring of PAH levels in barbecued food and dynamic modification of relevant safety limits are recommended to ensure food safety.

Abstract
Dietary uptake is the main pathway of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, there is no data regarding the pollution and health risks posed by PAHs in Lilium davidii var. unicolor. We measured the concentrations of 16 PAHs in lily bulbs from Lanzhou; analyzed the bioaccumulation, sources, and pollution pathways of PAHs; assessed the influence of baking on PAH pollution in the bulb; and assessed the cancer risks associated with PAH exposure via lily consumption. The total PAH concentrations in raw bulbs were 30.39-206.55 μg kg-1. The bioconcentration factors of total PAHs ranged widely from 0.92 to 5.71, with a median value of 2.25. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the octanol-water partition coefficients and water solubility values played important roles in the bioaccumulation of naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene in the raw bulb by influencing PAH availability in soil. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis with multivariate linear regression indicated that biomass and wood burning, coal combustion, diesel combustion, and petroleum leakage were the major sources of PAHs in the raw bulbs. The paired t-test showed that the PAH concentrations in the baked bulbs were higher than those in the raw bulbs. PAH compositions in lily bulb changed during the baking process. Baked bulbs exhibited a higher cancer risk than raw bulbs. Local adults had low carcinogenic risks from consuming lily bulbs. This study fills the knowledge gap about PAH pollution and the related health risks of PAHs in the Lanzhou lily.

Abstract
Chinese traditional smoked pork was contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chlorinated and brominated PAHs (ClPAHs and BrPAHs; XPAHs) during the smoking process. Therefore, our study investigated the concentrations, enrichment characteristics, and health risks associated with PAHs, as well as ClPAHs and BrPAHs in Chinese traditional smoked pork. The total concentrations of PAHs, ClPAHs and BrPAHs in traditional smoked pork ranged from 90.0 to 79200 ng/g fat weight (fw), 23.6-2340 pg/g fw and 0.550-200 pg/g fw, respectively, which were significantly higher than their levels found in raw pork. Additionally, the concentrations of PAHs and XPAHs in the surface of smoked pork were higher than those in the inner parts. High-ring PAHs exhibited a greater enrichment compared to low-ring PAHs, and BrPAHs exhibited greater enrichment ability than ClPAHs in smoked pork. Furthermore, the ability of individual congeners to migrate from the surface to the inner parts of the smoked pork were varied. When the smoking fuels were similar, a longer smoking time resulted in higher concentrations of PAHs and XPAHs in smoked pork, while casing effectively reduced their concentrations. The correlation between XPAH and parent PAH concentrations indicated that chlorination of PAHs was one of the primary formation mechanisms of some monochlorinated PAHs. Over half of the smoked pork samples posed a potential carcinogenic risk, particularly the surface samples. It is recommended to remove the surface parts when consuming smoked pork and to improve traditional smoking methods to mitigate the health risks.

Abstract
Historical chlor-alkali production has led to substantial concentrations of persistent organic pollutant residues in the environment. This study systematically investigated the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated/brominated-PAHs (Cl/Br-PAHs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) in sediment, lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), and fish samples from Ya-Er Lake, which is a site in China with historical chlor-alkali contamination. The average concentrations [(4.97-1.47) × 103 ng/g dry weight (dw)] of these pollutants in backfill sediments, which were dredged from the lake after chlor-alkali production stopped, were 2.68-70.87 times those in fresh lake sediments (0.622-218 ng/g dw) and reported concentrations in other areas. Correlation analyses indicated that Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs, and PCNs likely originated from halogenation of parent PAHs in the study area, and the chlorination ratios were larger than those of bromination. The Cl(1/2/3)-PAHs/PAHs and Br(1)-PAHs/PAHs ratios were higher than those for PAHs with more halogen atoms. This contamination extended into the biota, with notable pollutant burdens found in lotus (Nelumbo nucifera, 0.305-77.3 ng/g dw) and even higher concentrations in fish (2.20-345 ng/g lipid weight). Estimated biological soil accumulation factors revealed significant enrichment in lotus organs (mean: 7.19) and fish muscle (mean: 10.65), especially the latter, which highlighted bioaccumulation and potential food chain transfer risks. The estimated daily intakes of PAHs, Cl/Br-PAHs, and HCBD through fish consumption currently pose negligible risks, while dietary intake of PCNs may present health concerns. Continuous monitoring and impact assessments are crucial for developing appropriate risk management strategies to safeguard public health.

Abstract
Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs, H = F, Cl, Br) are a new class of PAHs derivatives that mainly originate from the incomplete combustion of halogen-laden materials and via metallurgical operations. These compounds circulate extensively in various environmental matrices. This survey provides a comprehensive review on governing synthesis routes of HPAHs, their environmental occurrence, and their health and ecological effects. The review comprehensively enlists and presents emission sources of these emerging organic pollutants into the air that serves as their main reservoir. The formation of HPAHs ensues through successive addition reactions of related precursors accompanied by ring cyclization steps; in addition to direct unimolecular fragmentation of parents halogenated. Halogenation of parent PAHs rapidly occurs in saline ecosystems, thus multiplying the availability of these notorious compounds in the environment. Certain HPAHs appear to be more carcinogenic than dioxins. Transmission routes of HPAHs from their emission sources to water bodies, soil, aquatic life, plants, terrestrial animals, and humans are well-documented. Later, the direct and indirect diffusion of HPAHs from air to the biotic (plants, animals, humans) and abiotic components (soil, water, sediments) are described in detail. The study concludes that HPAHs are permeable to the carbon matrices resulting in the alleviation of the source-to-sink interface. As a potential future perspective, understanding the transmission interfaces lays a foundation to intervene in the introduction of these toxicants into the food chain.

Abstract
Long-term exposure to environmental chemicals can detrimentally impact human health, and understanding the relationship between age distribution and levels of external and internal exposure is crucial. Nonetheless, existing methods for assessing population-wide exposure across age groups are limited. To bridge this research gap, we introduced a modeling approach designed to assess both chronic external and internal exposure to chemicals at the population level. The external and internal exposure assessments were quantified in terms of the average daily dose (ADD) and steady-state blood concentration of the environmental chemical, respectively, which were categorized by age and gender groups. The modeling process was presented within a spreadsheet framework, affording users the capability to execute population-wide exposure analyses across a spectrum of chemicals. Our simulation outcomes underscored a salient trend: younger age groups, particularly infants and children, exhibited markedly higher ADD values and blood concentrations of environmental chemicals compared to their older counterparts. This observation is due to the elevated basal metabolic rate per unit of body weight characteristic of younger individuals, coupled with their diminished biotransformation kinetics of xenobiotics within their livers. These factors collectively contribute to increased intake rates of environmental chemicals per unit of body weight through air and food consumption, along with heightened bioaccumulation of these chemicals within their bodies (e.g., blood). Furthermore, we augmented the precision of the external and internal exposure assessment by incorporating the age distribution across the population. The simulation outcomes unveiled that, to estimate the central tendency of the population's exposure levels, employing the baseline value group (age group 21-30) or the surrogate age of 25 serves as a simple yet dependable approach. However, for comprehensive population protection, our recommendation aligns with conducting exposure assessments for the younger age groups (age group 0-11). Future studies should integrate individual-level exposure assessment, analyze vulnerable population groups, and refine population structures within our developed model.

Abstract
To comprehensively characterize residents' exposure to major semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), samples of indoor floor wipes, size-segregated airborne particles, gaseous air, food, and paired skin wipes were simultaneously collected from residential areas around a large non-ferrous metal smelting plant as compared with the control areas, and three typical SVOCs (including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs)) were determined. Comparison and correlation analysis among matrices indicated PAHs were the major contaminants emitted from metal smelting activities compared to HPAHs and PCBs, with naphthalene verified as the most important characteristic compound, and their accumulation on skin may be a comprehensive consequence of contact with floor dust and air. While patterns of human exposure pathways for the SVOCs were found to be clearly correlated to their vapor pressure, dermal absorption was the major contributor (51.1-76.3%) to total carcinogenic risk (TCR) of PAHs and HPAHs for surrounding residents, especially for low molecular weight PAHs, but dietary ingestion (98.6%) was the dominant exposure pathway to PCBs. The TCR of PAHs exceeded the acceptable level (1 × 10-4), implying smelting activities obviously elevated the health risk. This study will serve developing pertinent exposure and health risk prevention measures.

Abstract
Plant tolerance to abiotic stress depends on fast molecular cascades involving stress perception, signal transduction, gene expression alterations, and metabolic rearrangement. This study sheds light on the tolerance mechanism of rice (Oryza sativa L.) towards the toxicity of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr), and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). Results showed that three PAHs significantly activated the phosphoinositide signaling system involving the phosphorus (P) metabolism and homeostasis in rice roots. This activation increased phytic acid (IP6) levels to over 54.12% of the control (p < 0.05). Molecular docking verified that three PAHs occupied the IP6 binding site in SPX3, a negative regulatory factor of P homeostasis, where ARG229 interacted with PAHs via the van der Waals force. Moreover, the expression of gene encoding SPX3 was significantly downregulated 2.81-, 2.83-, and 2.18-fold under Phe, Pyr, and BaP stress, respectively, relative to the control. Conversely, the expression levels of the gene coding SDEL2 was significantly increased, promoting the degradation of SPX3. Ultimately, P absorption and nucleic acid synthesis were enhanced, alleviating the inhibition effect of PAHs on rice growth. Notably, Pyr demonstrated the strongest binding affinity for SPX3, confirming its critical interference with P homeostasis. These findings provide insight into the molecular mechanisms regulating plant responses to PAHs, and offer guidance for improving crop resistance against organic pollutants and protecting food security.

Abstract
The initial step in the assessment of the ecological risk of pollutants is to determine the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC). However, ecological risk assessments of eight carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), methylcholanthrene (MCA), benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (CHR), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene (DBA), are rarely conducted due to the lack of their PNECs based on test data. In this study, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models and interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) models were combined to predict the acute toxicity of these eight target PHAs. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov analysis for species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) of native and all species was conducted. There was no significant difference between the predictions for native Chinese species and the predictions for all species by the QSAR-ICE models. In addition, the feasibility of the QSAR-ICE models was demonstrated by comparing the SSD curves constructed by measured toxicity data of BaP and those predicted by the QSAR-ICE models. The PNECs of the eight PAHs were estimated based on the SSDs and acute to chronic ratio (ACR) method; these data were 0.071 μg/L, 0.033 μg/L, 0.049 μg/L, 0.114 μg/L, 0.019 μg/L, 0.021 μg/L, 0.038 μg/L and 0.054 μg/L for DMBA, DBA, BaP, MCA, BaA, CHR, BbF, BkF, respectively. The higher PNECs of the alkylated PAHs suggested their lower ecological risks. Based on the mixed risk quotient (mRQ) of PAHs through the concentration addition (CA) model, high ecological risk watersheds, such as the Songhua River (mRQ = 1.95), the Liao River (mRQ = 4.59), and the Huai River (mRQ = 1.93), were identified.

Abstract
Toxic chemicals are released into the environment through diverse human activities. An increasing number of chronic diseases are associated with ambient pollution, thus posing a threat to people. Given the high consumption of resources for human biomonitoring, this study proposed coupled physiologically-based kinetic (co-PBK) modeling matrices as a biomonitoring tool for simplifying chronic internal exposure estimates of environmental chemicals and their metabolites using naphthalene (NAP) and its metabolites (i.e., 1-OHN and 2-OHN) as simulation examples. According to the simulation of the steady-state mass among various organs/tissues via the co-PBK modeling matrices, fat had the highest potential bioaccumulation of NAP and its metabolites. With respect to body fluids, 1-OHN and 2-OHN tended to bioaccumulate more in the bile than in the urine. According to the sensitivity analysis, the calculated sensitivity factors for the first-order kinetics-based rate constants imply that due to the biotransformation process, target organs/tissues (e.g., liver and kidneys) would be continuously exposed to more NAP metabolites under chronic exposure. Meanwhile, 1-OHN may be more stably transported to the urine than 2-OHN for further human biomonitoring during long-term internal exposure. According to the case study of simulating population chronic exposure to NAP in Shenzhen, the co-PBK modeling estimated the population exposure to NAP with an intake rate of 8.77 × 10-2 mg d-1 and the aggregated urinary concentration of NAP metabolites of 2.60 μg L-1. Furthermore, the accuracy of the urinary levels between the real-world data and the values simulated by the co-PBK modeling was assessed and the root-mean-square error of c1-OHN,urine was found to be lower than that of c2-OHN,urine.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives constitute a significant class of emerging contaminants that have been ubiquitously detected in diverse environmental matrixes, with some even exhibiting higher toxicities than their corresponding parent PAHs. To date, compared with parent PAHs, fewer systematic summaries and reanalyses are available for PAH derivatives with great environmental concerns. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the chemical species, levels, biotransformation patterns, chemical analytical methods, internal exposure routes with representative biomarkers, and toxicity of PAH derivatives, primarily focusing on nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), halogenated PAHs (XPAHs), and alkylated PAHs (APAHs). A collection of 188 compounds from four categories, 44 NPAHs, 36 OPAHs, 56 APAHs, and 52 XPAHs, has been compiled from 114 studies that documented the environmental presence of PAH derivatives. These compounds exhibited weighted average air concentrations that varied from a lower limit of 0.019 pg/m3 to a higher threshold of 4060 pg/m3. Different analytical methods utilizing comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS), gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS), comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC × GC-QQQ-MS), and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), that adopted untargeted strategies for the identification of PAH derivatives are also reviewed here. Additionally, an in-depth analysis of biotransformation patterns for each category is provided, including the likelihood of specific biotransformation reaction types. For the toxicity, we primarily summarized key metabolic activation pathways, which could result in the formation of reactive metabolites capable of covalently bonding with DNA and tissue proteins, and potential health outcomes such as carcinogenicity and genotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation and immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity that might be mediated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Finally, we pinpoint research challenges and emphasize the need for further studies on identifying PAH derivatives, tracking external exposure levels, evaluating internal exposure levels and associated toxicity, clarifying exposure routes, and considering mixture exposure effects. This review aims to provide a broad understanding of PAH derivatives' identification, environmental occurrence, human exposure, biotransformation, and toxicity, offering a valuable reference for guiding future research in this underexplored area.

Abstract
The limited existing research on the accumulation of hazardous chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs and BrPAHs) in micro-mesoplastics (mMPs) motivated this investigation. We collected mMPs from the coastal environments of Sri Lanka and Japan. Out of 75 target compounds analyzed, 61 were detected, with total parent PAH concentrations reaching 16,300 and 1770 ng/g plastic in Sri Lanka and Japan, respectively. The total parent PAH concentrations in mMPs from the southern Sri Lankan coastline were relatively higher than those from the eastern coastline. Phenanthrene and naphthalene were the dominant parent PAH congeners in most mMP samples. Chlorinated pyrenes and brominated naphthalene were predominant among halogenated PAHs. The estimated toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ) ranged from 0.67 to 1057 ng-TEQ/g plastic, with the highest levels observed in polystyrene (PS) particles from the southern Sri Lankan coast. Benzo[a]pyrene and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene exhibited elevated TEQ for parent PAHs, whereas dichloropyrene, and dibromopyrene represented the highest TEQs for ClPAHs and BrPAHs, respectively. The data evidenced that several HPAH congeners can increase the PAH-like toxicity (∼86%) in mMPs. This study provides insights into the accumulation of parent and halogenated PAHs in mMPs, highlighting their potential combined implications in marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract
Squid is traded globally as an important food resource. However, the occurrence of carcinogenic halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) in squid and the risk of their transfer through trade is little understood or recognized. Here, we comprehensively evaluated the occurrence and risk transfer by quantifying the congener-specific concentrations of HPAHs in 121 squid samples collected from the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. This was the first time that nine of the 36 target chlorinated and brominated PAH congeners had been detected in squid. The HPAHs exhibited growth-dilution effects in the squid. The lipid content of squid was the most significant factor influencing HPAH bioaccumulation, while differences in squid growth and local ocean contamination influenced by geographical distribution also affected HPAH bioaccumulation. The redistribution and risk transfers of HPAHs in squid as a food could be affected by international trading. The cancer risks from squid consumption in China and Mexico were increased by 50 % and 30 %, respectively, because of international squid trading.

Abstract
This review provides a comprehensive conclusion of the relationship between the intake of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and different dietary patterns, pointing to the accompanying potential health risks. To achieve this, existing pertinent research was collected and analyzed. The collation revealed that the concentration of PAHs in food and their dietary patterns were diverse in different regions. Specifically, the concentration of PAHs in food was found to be related to the level of pollution in the area, including soil, air, and water pollution, which is then accumulated through the food chain into food that can be ingested directly by the human body, resulting in malformations in offspring, increased risk of cancer, and gene mutation. Guidebooks and dietary surveys were consulted to uncover disparities in dietary patterns, which indicated regional variations in taste preferences, traditional foods, and eating habits. Different regions are spatially categorized in this assessment by cities, countries, and continents. Notably, smoking and grilling are two of the food processing methods most likely to produce high levels of PAHs. To prevent excessive intake of PAHs from food items and attain a higher quality of life, more health education is urgently needed to promote healthy eating patterns.

Abstract
Rice is a staple meal for the majority of Asians. However, human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from paddy grain is largely unknown in Thailand and Laos. Therefore, information on the quantitative measurement and assessment of the health problems caused by PAHs was analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of total PAHs in paddy grain in Thailand and Laos were 38.86 ± 5.13 and 11.35 ± 1.96 ng g-1, respectively. The highest concentration of PAHs in Thailand was B[k]F, whereas D[a,h]A was found to be the highest in Laos. A p-value less than 0.05 was defined, which showed B[b]F and B[k]F from Thailand and Laos were significant, which indicated that they could be from a different pollutant source. The main finding of this study, which was supported by the diagnostic ratios of PAHs and HCA, was that the primary source of PAHs was assumed to be incomplete combustion of petroleum products, which was caused by the burning of industrial fuels or vehicle exhausts, as well as open burning. The findings suggest that these two nations have similar PAH origins. Agricultural waste burning and transportation emissions are well-known sources of PAHs in Thailand and Laos. The cancer risk assessment method was based on the accumulation of PAHs from paddy grains. An ILCR of 1.0E-06 to 1.0E-04 was considered a tolerable limit of cancer risk, while a risk > 1.0E-04 was considered a concern in terms of cancer risk. The findings indicated that while PAH emissions exist, their contribution to global toxicity may be anticipated to be low in inhalation exposure. The higher values of ingestion and dermal risk estimated were regarded as the tolerable limit of cancer risk in children and adults from both countries, indicating that cancer risk in both nations falls within the "acceptable level" range.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate the level of 16 PAHs in fruit juice samples (orange, apple, peach, pineapple, and mango) with three different packages (PET bottle, Tetra Pak, and canned packaging) by using MSPE/GC-MS (magnetic solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) method. In this method limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ), and recovery were 0.030-0.280 μg/L, 0.090-0.840 μg/L, and 94.8-102%, respectively. Our results showed the median of total PAHs and PAH4 (in all samples) were 7.67 ± 3.19 and 0.370 ± 0.160 μg/L, respectively. The median of BaP in samples was )0.060 ± 0.030 μg/L( lower than the standard level (0.200 μg/L in drinking water) of US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Also, our results showed that pineapple juice had a maximum median of total PAHs of 12.4 ± 4.84 μg/L and mango juice had a minimum median of total PAHs of 5.17 ± 1.24 μg/L. Additionally, canned packaging had a maximum average total PAHs of 10.6 ± 5.22 μg/L and PET bottles had a minimum average total PAH of 5.25 ± 2.03 μg/L. A heat map approach was also used to cluster samples. The Monte Carlo results indicated that the estimated daily intake (EDI) rank order was Na > B(g)P > Ch > I(cd)P > B(b)F > Ph > B(k)F > F > Ace > Fl > B(a)P > B(a)A > P >A. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) results showed the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) at the 95th percentiles for adults and children was 4.91 × 10-7 and 9.12 × 10-7, respectively. It is concluded that the concentration of PAHs compounds in Iranian fruit juices is lower than the existing standards, and in terms of the risk of carcinogenesis, it does not threaten the human health (< 10-6).

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants with carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. Dietary intake is one of the significant exposure pathways of PAHs. In this study, gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was used to detect 16 priority PAHs listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in seasoning flour products distributed in Hunan Province. The consumption of seasoning flour products by the Hunan population was investigated by questionnaire. The results showed that the detection rate of PAHs in seasoning flour products in Hunan Province was 92.41%. Among them, benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), phenanthrene (PHE), fluoranthene (FLA), and chrysene (CHR) were dominant. The total PAHs and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) contents of soggy seasoning flour product samples were higher than those of crisp samples and chewy samples. The total amount of PAHs in rod-shaped and flaky samples were higher than that in filamentous and granular samples. The margin of exposure (MOE) values of various seasoning flour products and all age groups (children, adolescents, and adults) was much more significant than 10,000. Moreover, the incremental lifetime of cancer risk (ILCR) values of all age groups were below 1 × 10-5. The above results indicate that PAHs in seasoning flour products have a relatively low health risk for the Hunan population. Still, it is recommended that susceptible populations (children, adolescents, etc.) should control their intake of flour products.

Abstract
The manuscript presents an innovative and holistic approach to quantifying PAHs and BTEX emissions from the grilling process and indicates a novel driven-toxicity-based solution to recognize health effects related to BBQ emissions. The exposure scenario includes the type of grilling device, food type, and individual attitudes, but also a keen understanding of the broad health implications related to the gaseous/particulate PAHs emission, or age-related effects. The calculated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) associated with the exposure to PAH congeners and BTEX indicates an unacceptable level in the case of charcoal and briquette grilling with the highest values for professional cooks. The sum of 15 PAH concentrations in grilled foods was highest for meat grilling over charcoal briquettes - 382,020.39 ng/m3 and lowest for meat grilling on a gas grill - 1442.16 ng/m3. The emissions of BTEX from lump charcoal grilling were 130 times higher compared to the gaseous grill. In all considered scenarios lump-charcoal and charcoal briquettes grilling derive the ILCR above the 10-4, indicating negative effects of traditional grills on human health. The paper completes knowledge of wide-ranging health implications associated with BBQs, a topic that is almost completely unaddressed among the scientific community and policymakers.

Abstract
Workers in coal-fired power plants are at a high risk of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated derivatives (HPAHs), yet no studies have investigated such exposure of HPAHs. In this study, 12 PAHs and 8 chlorinated PAHs, but no brominated PAHs, were detected in >80% of serum samples from workers of a coal-fired power plant in eastern China. Serum HPAH concentrations were higher in plant workers (16-273 ng/g lipid) than in people without occupational exposure (12-51 ng/g lipid), and serum PAH and HPAH concentrations both in male and female workers were positively correlated with the occupational exposure duration, with an estimated doubling time of 11-17 years. Correlations were found between concentrations of ∑8HPAHs and ∑12PAHs but not between 7-chlorobenz[a]anthracene (7-ClBaA) and 1-chloropyrene (1-ClPyr) and their respective parent PAHs. In males, total concentrations of PAHs and HPAHs were positively correlated with pulmonary hypofunction and hypertension but not with abnormal electrocardiogram. The benzo[a]pyrene equivalents ratio of ∑8HPAHs/∑12PAHs was 0.3 ± 0.1. Among the HPAHs in the serum, 9-chlorophenanthrene, 7-ClBaA, and 1-ClPyr showed high health risks. This study is the first report on HPAH exposure in coal-fired power plant workers and provides new evidence on the health risks of PAHs and HPAHs in humans.

Abstract
As an ubiquitous carcinogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are closely related to anthropogenic activities. The process of urbanization leads to the spatial interlacing of farmlands and urbanized zones. However, field evidence on the influence of urbanization on the accumulation of PAHs in crops of peri-urban farmlands is lacking. This study comparatively investigated the urbanization-driven levels, compositions, and sources of PAHs in 120 paired plant and soil samples collected from the Yangtze River Delta in China and their species-specific human intake risks. The concentrations of PAHs in crops and soils in the peri-urban areas were 2407.92 ng g-1 and 546.64 ng g-1, respectively, which are significantly higher than those in the rural areas. The PAHs in the root were highly relevant to those in the soils (R2 = 0.63, p < 0.01), and the root bioconcentration factors were higher than 1.0, implying the contributions of root uptake to plant accumulations. However, the translocation factors in the peri-urban areas (1.57 ± 0.33) were higher than those in the rural areas (1.19 ± 0.14), indicating the enhanced influence through gaseous absorption. For the congeners, the 2- to 3-ring PAHs showed a higher plant accumulation potential than the 4- to 6-ring PAHs. Principal component analysis show that the PAHs in the peri-urban plants predominantly resulted from urbanization parameters, such as coal combustion, vehicle emissions, and biomass burning. The mean values of estimated dietary intake of PAHs from the consumption of peri-urban and rural crops were 9116 ng day-1 and 6601.83 ng day-1, respectively. The intake risks of different crops followed the order rice > cabbage > carrot > pea. Given the significant input of PAHs from urban to farmland, the influence of many anthropogenic pollutants arising from rapid urbanization should be considered when assessing the agricultural food safety.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs) and oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) are environmental pollutants with adverse effects on human health. The correlation between the concentrations of PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs in human plasma and the methylation level of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was investigated using data from 110 plasma samples collected in Tianjin, China. The median concentrations of PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs were 16.0 (IQR: 14.4-20.7) ng/mL, 82.2 (IQR: 63.1-97.6) ng/mL and 49.6 (IQR: 28.6-53.8) ng/mL, and the mean proportions were 13.4%, 56.5% and 30.1%, respectively. Bisulfite-PCR pyrosequencing was used to measure the methylation level of MT-CO1 and tRNA-Leu. The methylation levels of two mitochondrial genes (MT-CO1, tRNA-Leu) including four CpG sites (MT-CO1-P1, MT-CO1-P2, tRNA-Leu-P1 and tRNA-Leu-P2) were 0.67% ± 1.38%, 13.54% ± 2.59%, 7.23% ± 5.35% and 1.64% ± 2.94%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that significant correlations were found between PAHs and their derivatives exposure and mtDNA methylation levels.

Abstract
Foliar uptake, as an important pathway of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulation in winter wheat, has a great contribution to wheat PAHs, which mainly depends on atmospheric PAHs level. An indoor simulation experiment was conducted to explore the effects of foliar exposure to PAHs at different growth stages on PAHs uptake in wheat. Three levels (0, 0.75, 4.5 mg L-1) of mixed solution of three PAHs (Σ3PAHs) including naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), and benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) were sprayed on leaves of two varieties (Yunong, YN; Xiaoyan, XY) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) during the booting, heading, pre-filling, and post-filling stage. The results showed that the sprayed PAHs exhibited little effects on the growth of the two varieties except the stem biomass of YN was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced when high concentration of PAHs was applied at the post-filling stage. PAHs concentration in winter wheat grain was highest under foliar exposure at the pre-filling stage, while the lowest was found under foliar exposure at the post-filling stage. Transfer factor of PAHs from stem to root (TFroot/stem) of three PAHs when foliar exposure to PAHs at the booting and heading stage was significantly (p < 0.001) higher than that at the pre-filling and post-filling stage, while TFgrain/glume of three PAHs when foliar exposure to PAHs at pre-filling stage was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than that at the other three stages. These results indicated that foliar exposure to PAHs during the vegetative growth stage was transferred and distributed to the root, while PAHs are mainly transferred and accumulated to the grain during the grain filling stage. Additionally, the higher lipophilic PAHs showed a lower ability to transfer from the glume to grain, and larger flag leaf area had the potential to promote the enrichment of PAHs in grain. This study indicated that the health risk of PAHs in winter wheat could be effectively reduced by controlling atmospheric PAHs level during pre-filling stage.

Abstract
Surface sediments are both sinks and sources of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) in the environment. It is important to study the source of Cl/Br-PAHs in the surface sediment for controlling the ecological risk of Cl/Br-PAHs. Clues from the previous research suggested that atmospheric deposition may be one of the main sources of Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment. However, due to the lack of matched sediment and atmospheric Cl/Br-PAHs data, the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment has not been confirmed. This study investigated the characteristics of 37 Cl/Br-PAHs and validated the contribution of atmospheric sedimentation to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment by a case study in the surface sediments of the Chaobai River, China. To the best of our knowledge, four Cl-PAHs and eleven Br-PAHs were found in the sediments for the first time. The total concentrations of 18 Cl-PAH species were 76-2301 pg/g, while those of Br-PAHs were 6-238 pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantities (TEQ) of the Cl-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 0.73 pg TEQ/g and 2.21 pg TEQ/g, respectively. The TEQ of the Br-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 2.85 × 10-2 pg TEQ/g and 6.6 × 10-2 pg TEQ/g, respectively. Based on the characteristics comparison and correlation analysis of Cl/Br-PAHs in both sediment and ambient air, it was initially confirmed the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl-PAHs in sediments. However, there was no conclusion of Br-PAHs in sediment similar to Cl-PAHs in sediment. It was inferred that the sources of Br-PAHs in sediment were different from Cl-PAHs in sediment.

Abstract
The toxicological information of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs), as derivatives of PAHs, is still relatively lacking. In this study, a combination of transcriptomics and metabolomics approach was adopted to explore the changes in toxicity to human L02 hepatocytes after chlorination of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) at 6 position. In general, 6-Cl-B[a]P produced a stronger toxicity to human hepatic cells than did parent B[a]P. When exposure concentrations were 5 and 50 nM, 6-Cl-B[a]P caused a weaker transcriptomic perturbation relative to B[a]P, whereas a stronger metabolomic perturbation, a stronger oxidative stress and a stronger inhibition effect on cell viability were caused by 6-Cl-B[a]P than did parent B[a]P. Pathway enrichment analysis indicated that 6-Cl-B[a]P produced a more widely perturbation to metabolic pathways than did B[a]P. Although they both significantly impaired the function of mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), the exact mechanism is different. B[a]P suppressed the expression of 20 genes regulating mitochondrial ETC mainly via AhR activation. However, 6-Cl-B[a]P produced a stronger inhibition on the activities of complexes I and V than did B[a]P. Meanwhile, 6-Cl-B[a]P also exhibited a stronger inhibition effect on mitochondrial β oxidation of fatty acid. Furthermore, 6-Cl-B[a]P and B[a]P both significantly disturbed the nucleotide metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism in L02 cells.

Abstract
Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) are high lipophilic and degradation-resistant, which have been detected in the air, water, sediment and biota. HPAHs tend to have strong adverse effects on animals and humans. Although we have realized HPAHs are emerging contaminants which needs to be paid attention, there is still a lack of their individual commercial standards. This makes it difficult for understanding HPAHs comprehensively. This review is devoted to collect all the results have reported, and give a systemic look of their global distributions, influence factors and sources. Compared with air, studies on other environmental matrices (water and sediment) are more limited. The researches on organisms are fewest. Comparing the studied congeners, there are more studies on ClPAHs than BrPAHs. Human activities contribute mostly to their occurrence. Further, we then also introduce the toxicity and analytical methods to better understand HPAHs. The future research directions are also provided. Through this review, we can conclude there is an urgent need to develop analysis methods and ecologic risk assessment for better exploring HPAHs. Effective methods should be done to control HPAHs. Therefore, this review can provide a good basis for researchers to understand and control global pollution.

Abstract
Recently, derivates of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have aroused increasing concerns due to potential health problems they cause. In this study, we first found the coexistence of PAHs, chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in tap water. Twenty-six compounds including 13 PAHs, 5 Cl-PAHs, 5 Br-PAHs, and 3 OPAHs were detected. Total concentrations of PAHs (2.50-56.90 ng L-1) and OPAHs (n.d. to 80.34 ng L-1) were relatively higher than those of Cl-PAHs (0.30-11.28 ng L-1) and Br-PAHs (n.d. to 8.20 ng L-1). We calculated the 95th percentile incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values of PAHs and HPAHs. In all sampling sites, although no ILCR values for PAHs and HPAHs were higher than 1.00E-06, results still indicates there is still a low cancer risk existed. In addition, regional impact was established by combining ILCR values with population density. Predicted cancer incidence (PCI, people km-2) was calculated to evaluate regional impact more comprehensively. The results were different from previous hypothesis that sampling sites with high ILCR values may not necessarily present high regional impacts. After total PCI of each district was summed, all calculated districts of Beijing, China were at low regional impact.

Abstract
AbstractThe aim of this study was to develop an analytical method, which separates selected chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs) from fat, and fat-free or vegetable matrices. The method contains extraction-, cleanup-, and quantification steps. Integration of automated analysis actions, as in extraction and cleanup, should enhance the reproducibility, precision, and efficiency of the method. This was confirmed by validation of the overall analytical process. In the end, as a performance check, the developed method was applied on different matrices, e.g., tea, rice, grilled pork, and eel and predator eggs, as a non-food example. An inter-laboratory check was initiated as replacement for the lack of proficiency tests. Due to the high level of automation, both personnel and time effort are very low. In addition, the method is very robust with regard to the variability of the solvent selection and the loss of analytes by evaporation to dryness. It could be demonstrated that the developed method is applicable to different matrices with reproducible and precise results. This applies also to low-fat food and feed.

Abstract
The effects of water-saving patterns (Semi-dry water-saving, B; Shallow-wet control irrigation, Q; Traditional flooding irrigation, C; and Moistening irrigation, S) on the environmental fate of phenanthrene (Phe) and microbial responses in rhizosphere were investigated in paddy field system. Results showed the rice grain in Q treatment was more high production and safety with less Phe residue (up to 18%-49%) than other treatments, and the residual Phe in soil declined in the order: C (14.17%) > S (13.36%) > B (5.86%)>Q (2.70%), which proves the existence of optimal water conditions for PAHs degradation and rhizosphere effect during rice cultivation. Laccase (LAC) and dioxygenase (C23O) played important roles in Phe degradation, which were significantly positively correlated with Phe dissipation rate in soil (p < 0.01). Moreover, their activities in Q treatment, rhizosphere and subsoil were higher than those in C treatment, non-rhizoshere and upper layer soil. The introduction of Phe and rice into paddy field system decreased the microorganism diversity, and promoted the activities of enzymes and some PAHs degrading bacteria, such as Delftia, Serratia, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, norank_f_Rhodospirillaceae, norank_f_Nitrosomonadaceae and so on. According to the cluster analysis, redundancy analysis and correlation analysis between bacterial community composition and environmental factors, water-saving patterns markedly impacted the relative abundance and bacterial community structure by the regulating and controlling on environmental conditions of paddy field. The dioxygenase activity, laccase activity, oxidation-reduction potential and conductivity were the main affecting factors on Phe dissipation during growth stage of rice.

Abstract
The sixteen-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in twenty-one groceries from six food groups consumed by the Pakistani population. The highest concentration of the total PAHs was found in fish (243 ng g-1), while the lowest concentration was determined in rice (53 ng g-1). The total B[a]Peq dietary exposure for the male group followed an increasing order of children (865.5 ng day-1) < adolescents (2301 ng day-1) < seniors (2864 ng day-1) < adults (3004 ng day-1), whereas the similar order was also observed for the female group. The male group showed 1-8.5% (mean 5.5%) of higher exposure amount compared to the female group. Among all food categories, wheat (43%) and milk (34%) contributed the greatest while rice (1%) and egg (1%) contributed the smallest to the total dietary exposure of PAHs. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values for the adults and children revealed a potential cancer risk to the both male and female groups. Whereas at the 95th percentiles, the ILCR values for all age and gender groups exceeded the limit (>10-5), demonstrating a high potential cancer risk in the Pakistani population. The sensitivity analysis found that the daily dietary intake, exposure duration and the cancer slope factor were the most influential variables contributed to the total variance of risk.

Abstract
Urine sample tests are one of the most common methods of estimating human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and assessing population health risks. To evaluate the reliability of the urine test and the impact of other PAH elimination routes on the health risk estimated by this test, we proposed a backward modeling framework integrating other common elimination routes of PAH metabolites to calculate the overall intake rate of the parent PAH based on the levels of corresponding main metabolites in urine. Due to limited biotransformation data, we selected naphthalene as an example to evaluate model performance and collected urine samples from 234 random adults in Shenzhen. The overall intake rates of naphthalene were then simulated and compared to current literature data. The simulated intake rates of naphthalene ranged from 3.70 × 10-3 mg d-1 to 1.95 mg d-1 and followed a lognormal distribution with a median value of 6.51 × 10-2 mg d-1. The results indicated that, if naphthalene exposure occurred only via food for the population of Shenzhen, the literature data fell within the most frequent interval [3.70 × 10-3, 4.45 × 10-2] but were lower than the simulated median value. However, if other exposure routes were considered, the allocation factor-adjusted literature data were close to the simulated median values. In addition, under normal physiological conditions, the simulated results were more sensitive to 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OHN) and 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OHN) levels in urine than other biometric variables, which is due to the limited load of 1-OHN and 2-OHN in human elimination routes. Furthermore, the suggested safety levels of 1-OHN and 2-OHN in urine to protect 99% of the general population of Shenzhen were 6.40 × 10-6 and 3.75 × 10-5 mg L-1, which could be used as regulatory indicators based on the high reliability of the model.

Abstract
Cooking exhaust gas includes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are unintentionally generated during cooking, which exposes the cook and others in the vicinity to these toxic compounds. However, information on the occurrence of PAHs, particularly their chlorinated derivatives (ClPAHs), in cooking exhaust gas is limited. Here, we determined the concentrations of 12 PAHs and 20 ClPAHs in cooking exhaust gas emitted during gas-grilling of a Pacific saury using a typical Japanese fish grill in an indoor kitchen. The total concentrations of PAHs and ClPAHs in the cooking exhaust gas were 3400 and 19 ng m-3, respectively. All 12 PAHs were detected in the cooking exhaust gas, with phenanthrene (2100 ng m-3), fluorene (630 ng m-3), and anthracene (200 ng m-3) detected at the highest concentrations. Four of the 20 ClPAHs were detected, with 9-monochlorinated phenanthrene detected at the highest concentration (12 ng m-3). The exposure rates for the cook to the PAHs and ClPAHs in the cooking exhaust gas, estimated using the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology - Indoor Consumer Exposure Assessment Tool (AIST-ICET), were in the range of 7.2-72 ng-BaPeq kg-1 day-1 (toxic equivalent concentrations relative to the toxicity of benzo[a]pyrene), which was comparable with that for dietary ingestion of cooked foods (54 ng-BaPeq kg-1 day-1). A risk assessment of exposure to PAHs and ClPAHs in cooking exhaust gas in the indoor environment revealed that this gas may pose a health risk to the cook (incremental lifetime cancer risk: 2.1 × 10-6 to 2.1 × 10-5), indicating that further investigations are warranted.

Abstract
The main objectives of the present study were to investigate urinary monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) in 77 primiparas who live in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, and their association with 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and human health risks. High detection frequencies of OH-PAHs demonstrated the wide occurrence of chemicals in the human exposure to PAHs. The urinary concentrations of Σ7OH-PAHs ranged from 1.37 to 45.5 ng/mL, and the median concentrations of 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OHN), 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OHN), 2-hydoxyfluorene (2-OHF), ΣOHPhe (the sum of 1-, 2+ 3-hydroxyphenanthrene), and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) were 3.00, 2.58, 0.31, 0.44, and 0.51 ng/mL, respectively. In the sum concentration of seven OH-PAHs, 1-OHN accounted for the largest proportion (43.7% of Σ7OH-PAHs), followed by 2-OHN (37.1%), 2-OHF (4.94%), 1-OHP (8.01%), 1-OHPhe (4.79%), and 2+3-OHPhe (1.46%). The present results showed that vehicle exhaust and petrochemical emission are the main sources of PAHs in primiparas in Shenzhen, and inhalation is the most important exposure route. The living conditions have a significant influence on human exposure to PAHs. The concentrations of 8-OHdG were positively correlated with OH-PAH concentrations in urine because evidence suggested that urinary 8-OHdG levels can be considered as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage. Hazard quotient was used to assess the human health risks from exposure to single compound, and hazard index was used to assess the cumulative risks of the compounds, which demonstrated that the exposure risks from PAHs in primiparas were relatively low.

Abstract
In everyday life, humans can be exposed to various chemicals including ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) mostly through food consumption and/or inhalation. In the presented study, we evaluated PAH concentrations in duplicate samples (n = 251). Concurrently, the outdoor concentrations of PM2.5-bound PAHs in filters (n = 179) were also monitored. The daily exposure to PAHs was subsequently estimated for the risk group of pregnant women living in two different cities (Most city and Ceske Budejovice city) in the Czech Republic. This is the first unique study in Europe to evaluate human daily exposure to 20 PAHs both from inhalation (outdoor air) and dietary intake. For the analysis of samples collected during the years 2016/2017, a gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry was applied. Focusing on the diet samples, a slightly higher sum of detected PAHs was measured in duplicates obtained from the mothers living in the Most city (0.115-186 ng g-1) compared to the Ceske Budejovice city (0.115-97.1 ng g-1). This could be due to a higher occurrence of major analytes (pyrene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene) and the different composition of daily diet. The values of toxic and most often detected substance, namely benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), were also higher by 35% in the Most city. Regarding the outdoor air contamination (only particulate phase - PM2.5 was assessed), here the opposite situation was observed, relatively higher amounts of all PAHs were monitored in the Ceske Budejovice city (median: 2.22 ng m-3) than in the Most city (median: 1.07 ng m-3). These higher PAH concentrations in the Ceske Budejovice city are probably caused by more intense traffic, higher population and also by the occurrence of old-fashioned heating plant. Depending on a seasonal variability, especially during the cold season, the concentrations of BaP exceeded the European average emission limit (1 ng m-3) by 1.5-6 times. This highest inhalation exposure to all PAHs was observed in February. However, the dietary intake still represents the dominant contributor (>90%) to the total PAH exposure.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are universal organic pollutants in the agro ecosystems in China, therefore, it is important to understand the uptake and accumulation of PAHs in crops growing on PAHs contaminated soils for human health risk assessments. Water management is a common practice to maintain high grain yields during wheat production. However, the effects of soil water content on the accumulation and translocation of PAHs in wheat are still not clear. The main objectives of the present study were to investigate the effects of soil water content on the accumulation of three selected PAHs (Σ3PAHs, phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene) in wheat during whole plant growth stage and on translocation or remobilization of Σ3PAHs from vegetative tissues to wheat grains. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Xiaoyan22) were grown on Σ3PAHs spiked soils maintaining 80%, 60% or 40% water-holding capacity during the whole plant growth stage. Plant samplings were performed at jointing, anthesis or maturity stage, respectively. The present study showed that grain yield and biomass of the crop increased with soil water content increasing. Transpiration rate of wheat leaf under 80% and 60% water-holding capacity treatments was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that under 40% water-holding capacity treatment at both anthesis and filling stage. Soil water content and plant growth stage had significant (p < 0.0001) effects on concentrations of phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene in winter wheat. When exposed to 0, 15, 60, and 150 mg kg-1 Σ3PAHs in soils, Σ3PAHs concentrations in the grains under 60% water-holding capacity treatment were 46.6%, 69.9%, 89.5% and 81.7% of those under 80% water-holding capacity treatment, respectively. The highest concentrations of Σ3PAHs in the crop were recorded at anthesis stage. The distribution of PAHs in different tissues of wheat varied among different soil water treatments and plant growth stages. The present study indicated that optimizing soil water content during winter wheat production could apparently reduce concentrations of Σ3PAHs in grains via influence root uptake of Σ3PAHs and translocation of Σ3PAHs from stem or leaf into grain, suggesting the potential of water management to cope with PAHs contamination in crops growing on PAHs contaminated soils.

Abstract
The coexistence of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in drinking water has generated much concern recently. However, a method to simultaneously determine these compounds has not been developed. In this study, a method using solid-phase extraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for determination of PPAHs and HPAHs in drinking water was established. Forty-two target compounds including 16 PPAHs and 26 HPAHs (16 chlorinated PAHs (Cl-HPAHs) and 10 brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs)) were selected to evaluate the performance. Our results indicate enriching compounds with a LC18 cartridge and eluting with dichloromethane is optimal with recovery of 74.88-119.4%. Method detection limits ranged from 0.34 to 3.37 ng L-1 when only using 1 L samples. The method accomplished the analysis of trace PPAHs and HPAHs. We found the coexistence of PPAHs and HPAHs including 12 PPAHs, 2 Cl-PAHs and 3 Br-PAHs in tap water samples. Maximum total concentration of PPAHs and HPAHs reached 33.69 ng L-1 and 3.04 ng L-1, respectively. Trace Br-PAHs were first detected in drinking water. 6-bromobenzene[a]pyrene was dominated among the HPAHs with a concentration from 2.30 to 2.69 ng L-1. The simultaneous occurrence of PPAHs and HPAHs in drinking water should receive more attention, and their formation mechanism should be further explored.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are unintentionally generated in foods that are cooked, and dietary ingestion of these PAHs is regarded as the dominant route of exposure to PAHs. Some chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs) are more toxic than their corresponding parent PAHs and can also be generated in food during cooking. Knowledge of the concentrations of ClPAHs in cooked foods has been limited by the lack of an adequate analytical method for measuring ClPAH concentrations in cooked foods. In this study, we developed an analytical method for simultaneous determination of PAHs and ClPAHs in lipid-rich foods. The combination of a potassium hydroxide silica gel column and an activated carbon cartridge enabled us to simultaneously measure PAH and ClPAH concentrations in raw and grilled fish and meats. Twelve kinds of PAHs (e.g., fluorene [Fle], phenanthrene [Phe], fluoranthene [Flu], and pyrene [Pyr]) were detected in grilled foods. The concentrations ranged from below the limit of quantitation (<LOQ) to 310 ng g-1. We also detected 9-monochlorinated Phe (9-ClPhe), 3-monochlorinated Flu (3-ClFlu), 8-monochlorinated Flu (8-ClFlu), and 1-monochlorinated Pyr (1-ClPyr); those concentrations ranged from <LOQ to 0.16 ng g-1. The total concentrations of PAHs were significantly lower in gas-grilled meats than in charcoal-grilled meats. In contrast, the concentrations of ClPAHs were significantly higher in gas-grilled meats than in the charcoal-grilled meats. This pattern could be attributed to the difference of reaction temperatures needed to generate them. Toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations, which were calculated based on toxicities relative to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), were much higher in the grilled foods (0.12-12 ng-BaPeq g-1) for PAHs than for ClPAHs (<LOQ to 0.026 ng-BaPeq g-1).

Abstract
Levels, distribution, possible sources and potential risks of 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated comprehensively in frequently consumed seafood species collected from the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Samples were collected in winter and summer, 2015. The total concentration of PAHs (∑PAHs) in the examined seafood was 184.5-2806.6 ng/g wet weight (ww) in winter and 117.9-4216.8 ng/g ww in summer, respectively. The levels of ∑PAHs were comparable to or higher than those reported from other coastal areas. Seasonal variation was not significant for the majority of the monitored PAHs. Spatial distribution revealed that the seafood collected from areas with recent urbanization and industrialization (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sundarbans) was more contaminated with PAHs than those from the unindustrialized area (Meghna Estuary). Low-molecular-weight isomers dominated the PAH composition. Molecular ratios suggested the abundance of mixed sources of PAHs in the Bangladeshi coastal areas with a slight imposition toward the petrogenic origin. A preliminary evaluation of human health risk indicated that the dietary PAH exposure from consumption of Bangladeshi seafood would certainly induce adverse health effects. This finding suggests the need to enhance risk management regarding seafood consumption through public advisory in Bangladesh.

Abstract
This study was designed to test whether the dietary intake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a potential exposure source relating to the high cancer incidence area in southwest China. Duplicate plate method was used to collect food samples in rural and urban sites in the region. Questionnaire surveys were conducted among 300 local residents to obtain their dietary habits and 50 subjects were chosen to collect the samples. The 16 priority PAHs (PAH16) in composite food samples for each individual subject were measured, and non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were analyzed based on the results of Monte Carlo method. The average concentration of the PAH16 in food samples was 12.04 ± 8.52 ng g-1. The life time average daily benzo(a)pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) exposure dose was 6.07 × 10-6 mg kg-1 day-1. Although non-carcinogenic risk was found to be within a controllable range, the average incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was 3.7 × 10-5 for rural subjects and 6.1 × 10-5 for urban subjects, which is comparable with other regions in China. The serious risk level of 10-4 was exceeded by 10.7% of urban residents and 2.1% of rural residents. This study implies that dietary exposure to PAHs is a potential exposure source to the high cancer in the region, and further cancer risk control strategies need to be formulated.

Abstract
There is a lack of information regarding the quantitative determination and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in grilled and fried meat products in Shandong Province of China. The aim of this work was firstly to detect the contamination levels of 15 PAHs in 52 grilled and fried meats consumed by the population of Shandong Province, China. In brief, concentrations of the sum of 15 PAHs in individual samples were ranged from 8.23 to 341 μg/kg with a mean contamination level of 63.3 μg/kg. Moreover, the factors for the formation of PAHs in these samples have been identified and analyzed. One grilled meat sample exceeded the maximum limits of 2 and 12 μg/kg set for BaP and PAH4 by the European Union. For a further step, the mean dietary exposures for total PAHs from grilled and fried meat products were estimated to be 120 and 74.8 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. Finally, the health risk estimation was performed using the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) approach. The obtained values of four groups were all lower than 10-4, indicating a slight potential carcinogenic risk of consumer health. This study was the first attempt to provide baseline information of potential health risk of dietary exposure of PAH-containing grilled and fried meats, which could be useful for health management of the local consumers.

Abstract
Dietary consumption of contaminated vegetables may contribute to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure in humans; however, this exposure pathway has not been examined thoroughly. This study aims to characterize the concentrations of PAHs in six types of vegetables grown near industrial facilities in Shanghai, China. We analyzed 16 individual PAHs on the US EPA priority list, and the total concentration in vegetables ranged from 65.7 to 458.0 ng g-1 in the following order: leafy vegetables (romaine lettuce, Chinese cabbage and Shanghai green cabbage) > stem vegetables (lettuce) > seed and pod vegetables (broad bean) > rhizome vegetables (daikon). Vegetable species, wind direction, and local anthropogenic emissions were determinants of PAH concentrations in the edible part of the vegetable. Using isomer ratios and principal component analysis, PAHs in the vegetables were determined to be mainly from coal and wood combustion. The sources of PAHs in the six types of vegetables varied. Daily ingestion of PAHs due to dietary consumption of these vegetables ranged from 0.71 to 14.06 ng d-1 kg-1, with contributions from Chinese cabbage > broad bean > romaine > Shanghai green cabbage > lettuce > daikon. The daily intake doses adjusted by body weight in children were higher than those in teenagers and adults. Moreover, in adults, higher concentrations of PAHs were found in females than in males. For individuals of different age and gender, the incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) from consuming these six vegetables ranged from 4.47 × 10-7 to 6.39 × 10-5. Most were higher than the acceptable risk level of 1 × 10-6. Our findings demonstrate that planting vegetables near industrial facilities may pose potential cancer risks to those who consume the vegetables.
