Dioxins and furans in air and deposition: a review of levels, behaviour and processes

Reevaluation of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin Equivalency Factors for Dioxin-Like Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins, Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls for Fishes

An expert meeting was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1997 to streamline assessments of risk posed by mixtures of dioxin-like chemicals (DLCs) through development of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) equivalency factors (TEFs) for mammals, birds, and fishes. No reevaluation has been performed for fish TEFs. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to reevaluate the TEFs for fishes based on an updated database of relative potencies (RePs) for DLCs. Selection criteria consistent with the WHO meeting resulted in 53 RePs across 14 species of fish ultimately being considered. Of these RePs, 70% were not available at the time of the WHO meeting. These RePs were used to develop updated TEFs for fishes based on a similar decision process as used at the WHO meeting. The updated TEF for 16 DLCs was greater than the WHO TEF, but only four differed by more than an order of magnitude. Measured concentrations of DLCs in four environmental samples were used to compare 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents (TEQs) calculated using the WHO TEFs relative to the updated TEFs. The TEQs for none of these environmental samples differed by more than an order of magnitude. Therefore, present knowledge supports that the WHO TEFs are suitable potency estimates for fishes. However, the updated TEFs pull from a larger database with a greater breadth of data and as a result offer greater confidence relative to the WHO TEFs. Risk assessors will have different criteria in the selection of TEFs, and the updated TEFs are not meant to immediately replace the formal WHO TEFs; but those who value a larger database and increased confidence in TEQs could consider using the updated TEFs. Characterization of PCDD/F and dl-PCB levels in air in Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain)

This research examines the levels and trends of pollutants, specifically 17 congeners of PCDD/Fs and 12 dl-PCBs, in the air measured in the province of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain). The study used PCDD/Fs, dl-PCB, and the sum of dioxin-like compounds as separate response variables. A total of 113 air samples were collected and analyzed using the method described in the European Standard (EN-1948:2006) from two industrial areas. The results were analyzed using non-parametric test to assess the variability of these pollutants based on different factors (year, season and day of the week) and General Linear Models to assess the weight of each factor. The study found that the toxic equivalents (TEQs) for PCDD/Fs were 12.29 fg TEQm^-3 and for dl-PCBs were 1.63 fg TEQm^-3, which were in a similar range or lower than those observed in other national and international studies in industrial areas. The results showed temporal variations, with higher levels of PCDD/Fs in autumn-winter than in spring-summer and higher levels of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs during weekdays than on weekends. The industrial area where the energy recovery plant (ERP) will be located had higher levels of air pollutants due to the presence of two PCDD/Fs emitting industries nearby, as indicated by the Spanish Registry of Polluting Emission Sources. Both industrial areas showed similar profiles of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, with the PCDD/F profiles dominated by OCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF in terms of concentrations and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF, and 2,3,7,8-TCDD in terms of TEQs. The dl-PCB profiles were dominated by PCB 118, PCB 105, and PCB 77 in terms of concentrations and PCB 126 in terms of TEQs. The findings of this study can serve as an indicator of the potential impact of ERP on the health of the resident population and the environment.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in bivalve molluscs. Risk to Polish consumers?

Introduction

Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) were investigated in six species of bivalve mollusc purchased on the Polish retail market. The risk to consumers was calculated as a percentage of the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) (2 pg World Health Organization toxic equivalent (WHO-TEQ) kg-1 body weight (b.w.)).

Material and Methods

Altogether 32 samples were analysed using an isotope dilution technique with high resolution gas chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry.

Results

Low levels of all analysed compounds were found. The range of PCDD/Fs was 0.08-0.37 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 of wet weight (w.w.) and 0.04-0.41 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 w.w. for DL-PCBs. The highest concentrations of all analysed compounds were found in Pacific oysters, at 0.30 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 w.w. for the sum of PCDD/Fs and 0.19 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 for the sum of DL-PCBs. These concentrations were 2-4 times higher than those detected in the other analysed mollusc species. Different species-dependent congener profiles were observed for PCDD/F concentrations, while PCB congener concentration profiles were species independent. The risk to consumers was assessed relating theoretical intakes of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs per 25, 50 and 100 g of consumption of molluscs per week to the TWI.

Conclusion

Taking into account the low consumption of molluscs in Poland and low concentrations of analysed compounds, neither adults nor children are likely to exceed the TWI by ingestion of food in this category.

Residential proximity to dioxin emissions and risk of breast cancer in the sister study cohort

Some dioxins are carcinogenic, but few studies have investigated the relationship between ambient polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and risk of breast cancer. We evaluated associations between proximity-based residential exposure to industrial emissions of PCDD/F and breast cancer risk in a large U.S. cohort. Sister Study participants at enrollment (2003-2009) were followed for incident breast cancer through September 2018. After restricting to participants with ≥10 years of residential history prior to enrollment (n = 35,908), we generated 10-year distance- and toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ)-weighted average emissions indices (AEI [g TEQ/km2]) within 3, 5, or 10 km of participants' residences, overall and by facility type. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between AEI quartiles (vs. zero AEI) and risk of breast cancer [invasive or ductal carcinoma in situ]. There were 2670 incident breast cancer cases over 11 years (median) of follow-up. Breast cancer risk was increased for those in the highest quartile [Q] of AEI exposure within 3 km (HRQ4:1.18, 95% CI: 0.99,1.40, Ptrend = 0.03). The HR was higher for the 10-year AEI at 3 km from municipal solid waste facilities (HR ≥ median.vs.0:1.50, 95% CI: 0.98, 2.29; Ptrend = 0.07). Risk was higher among ever smokers (vs. never smokers) in the top quartile of the 3 km AEI (HRQ4:1.41, 95% CI:1.12,1.77, Ptrend = 0.003; Pinteraction = 0.03) and higher risk for ER negative tumors was suggested (HRQ4:1.47, 95% CI: 0.95, 2.28, Ptrend = 0.07, Pheterogeneity = 0.17). Our findings suggest that residential exposure to PCDD/F emissions may confer an increased risk of breast cancer.

Spatiotemporal bioavailability of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in wild mussels from the Portuguese Atlantic coast

This study aimed to assess the spatiotemporal bioavailability of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in wild adult mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, collected along the Portuguese Atlantic coast between 2009 and 2020. The work is part of a national environmental monitoring program. The purpose was to evaluate the dioxins' temporal trends, the human and ecological risks, and the correlation between mussels' location and the main pollutant sources in Portugal. The levels and congener patterns of the most toxicity-relevant 17 PCDD/Fs and 12 dl-PCBs were determined, with the dl-PCBs dominant. The sum of Σ₁₇PCDD/Fs and Σ₁₂dl-PCBs values ranged from 2.0 to 4.0 ng WHO-TEQ kg^-1, (wet weight basis), below the limits established by the European Commission for contamination in fish and fishery products (6.5 ng per kg^-1). The study included five years - 2009, 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2020 -, allowing to verify the impact of European Directive 2013/39/UE against the pollution of water in Portugal; it was observed that dioxin levels in mussels diminished over the time. Statistical analysis allowed verification of different spatial trends of dl-PCB profiles along the Portuguese Atlantic coast. The mono-ortho dl-PCB pentachlorinated congener IUPAC #118 prevailed in 2009 and 2018 in all sampling sites, and it was predominant in 2010, 2016 and 2020, followed by the congeners IUPAC #105, #156 and #167. The IUPAC #167, #169 and #123 were the most abundant hexachlorinated congeners, and the IUPAC #77 the most abundant tetrachlorinated congener. This work emphasises the importance of monitoring dioxins and mapping the congeners in Atlantic coastal ecosystems, to contribute to their elimination.

Dioxins and PCBs in freshwater fish and sediments from Polish lakes

PCDD/F and PCB concentrations were analysed in sediments, fish muscles, and livers collected from four lakes in Poland. In general, the fish and sediments had low levels of dioxins and PCBs. The total TEQ in the sediments was 0.12-0.47 pg WHO-TEQ g^-1 dry matter (dm), the NDL-PCB content was at 0.05-0.36 ng g^-1 dm. The muscles contained PCDD/F/DL-PCBs levels of 0.03-3.19 pg WHO-TEQ g^-1 wet weight (ww) while the NDL-PCB content was 0.08-27.30 ng g^-1 ww. The livers contained 0.73-8.74 pg WHO-TEQ g^-1 ww and the NDL-PCB content was 1.52-88.84 ng g^-1 ww. The potential health risk for fish consumers was assessed using the Tolerable Weekly Intake (2 pg WHO-TEQ/kg bw). The consumption of 200 g of fish containing an average PCDD/D/DL-PCB content results in an intake of 43-455% TWI and 14-150% TWI for children and adults, respectively, depending on fish species and sampling point.

Engineering a sustainable future for point-of-care diagnostics and single-use microfluidic devices

Single-use, disposable, point-of-care diagnostic devices carry great promise for global health, including meeting urgent needs for testing and diagnosis in places with limited laboratory facilities. Unfortunately, the production and disposal of single-use devices, whether in lateral flow assay, cartridges, cassettes, or lab-on-chip microfluidic format, also poses significant challenges for environmental and human health. Point-of-care devices are commonly manufactured from unsustainable polymeric materials derived from fossil sources. Their disposal often necessitates incineration to reduce infection risk, thereby creating additional release of CO2. Many devices also contain toxic chemicals, such as cyanide derivatives, that are damaging to environmental and human health if not disposed of safely. Yet, in the absence of government regulatory frameworks, safe and sustainable waste management for these novel medical devices is often left unaddressed. There is an urgent need to find novel solutions to avert environmental and human harm from these devices, especially in low- and middle-income countries where waste management infrastructure is often weak and where the use of point-of-care tests is projected to rise in coming years. We review here common materials used in the manufacture of single-use point-of-care diagnostic tests, examine the risks they pose to environmental and human health, and investigate replacement materials that can potentially reduce the impact of microfluidic devices on the production of harmful waste. We propose solutions available to point-of-care test developers to start embedding sustainability at an early stage in their design, and to reduce their non-renewable plastic consumption in research and product development.

Atmospheric PCDDs/PCDFs levels and occurrences in Southeast Asia: A review

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are toxic compounds derived from anthropogenic sources that stay in the environment for long periods. Ambient air has become the most important pathway for the transfer of PCDDs/PCDFs from emission sources to the environment. This review intends to summarise the information available on atmospheric PCDDs/PCDFs in the countries of Southeast Asia to provide a detailed description of the trends in PCDDs/PCDFs emissions, key sources, and levels in urban, rural, and industrial air as reported in peer-reviewed literature since 2000 and by the United Nations Environment Programme. As the largest country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is the major PCDDs/PCDFs emitter, accounting for 72.81% of the total release of PCDDs/PCDFs in the air from all available inventories in this region, while Brunei Darussalam is the lowest emitter, contributing to less than 0.02%. Open burning processes have become the largest source of ambient PCDDs/PCDFs in the region (69.62%), followed by waste incineration (10.69%), and ferrous and non-ferrous metal production (8.78%). PCDDs/PCDFs levels in rural areas ranged between 10 and 38 fg TEQ m^-3; however, where open burning waste has occurred, the levels rose to 12-29 times higher. In urban areas, ambient levels were 15 times greater than in rural areas, varying from 23 to 565 fg TEQ m^-3. Atmospheric concentrations near industrial palm oil and waste incinerator sites were between 64 and 1530 fg TEQ m^-3. The non-cancer risk of ambient exposure to PCDDs/PCDFs through inhalation is low among populations near facilities emitting PCDDs/PCDFs. The lack of local technical capacity, the high economic costs, and the lack of established human resource capacities have been the major challenges in conducting ambient PCDDs/PCDFs studies in most countries in the region.

Passive Air Sampling of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PAEs, DEHA, and PAHs from Informal Electronic Waste Recycling and Allied Sectors in Indian Megacities

Xenobiotic chemical emissions from the informal electronic waste recycling (EW) sector are emerging problem for developing countries, with scale and impacts that are yet to be evaluated. We report an intensive polyurethane foam disk passive air sampling study in four megacities in India to investigate atmospheric organic pollutants along five transects viz., EW, information technology (IT), industrial, residential, and dumpsites. Intraurban emission sources were estimated and attributed by trajectory modeling and positive matrix factorization (PMF). ∑₁₇PCDD/Fs, ∑₂₅PCBs, ∑₇plasticizers, and ∑₁₅PAHs concentrations ranged from 3.1 to 26 pg/m³ (14 ± 7; Avg ± SD), 0.5-52 ng/m³ (9 ± 12); 7.5-520 ng/m³, (63 ± 107) and 6-33 ng/m³ (17 ± 6), respectively. EW contributed 45% of total PCB concentrations in this study and was evidenced as a major factor by PMF. The dominance of dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs), particularly PCB-126, reflects combustion as the possible primary emission source. PCDD/Fs, PCBs and plasticizers were consistently highest at EW transect, while PAHs were maximum in industrial transect followed by EW. Concentrations of marker plasticizers (DnBP and DEHP) released during EW activities were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in Bangalore than in other cities. Toxic equivalents (TEQs) due to dl-PCBs was maximum in the EW transect and PCB-126 was the major contributor. For both youth and adult, the highest estimated inhalation risks for dl-PCBs and plasticizers were seen at the EW transect in Bangalore, followed by Chennai and New Delhi.

Characterization of Ambient Particulate Matters in an Industry-Intensive Area in Central Taiwan

Atmospheric particulate matters (PMs) were measured in an industry-intensive region in central Taiwan in order to investigate the characteristics and possible sources of PMs. The samplings were simultaneously conducted using a 10- and 3-stage Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) from 2017 to 2018. In this study, the characteristics of PMs in this region were evaluated by measuring the mass concentration of PMs and analyzing water-soluble ions and metallic elements, as well as dioxins. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the potential sources of PMs. The results showed that the mean concentration of coarse (>1.8 μm), fine (0.1–1.8 μm), and ultrafine (<0.1 μm) particles were 13.60, 14.38, and 3.44 μg/m3, respectively. In the industry-intensive region, the size distribution of ambient particles showed a bi-modal distribution with a high concentration of coarse particles in the spring and summer, while fine particles were dominant in the autumn and winter. The most abundant water-soluble ions of PMs were NO3−, Cl−, and SO42−, while the majority of metallic elements were Na, Fe, Ca, Al, and Mg in different particle sizes. The results of Pearson’s correlation analysis for metals indicated that the particles in the collected air samples were related to the iron and steelmaking industries, coal burning, vehicle exhausts, and high-tech industries. The dioxin concentration ranged from 0.0006 to 0.0017 pg I-TEQ/Nm3. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the contribution to PMs was associated with sea salt, secondary pollutants, and industrial process.

Environmental characteristics and formations of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs) are emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that have similar or higher toxicities than the notorious dioxins. Toxicities, formation mechanisms, and environmental fates of PBDD/Fs are lacking because accurate quantification, especially of higher brominated congeners, is challenging. PBDD/F analysis is difficult because of photolysis and thermal degradation and interference from polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Here, literatures on PBDD/F analysis and environmental occurrences are reviewed to improve our understanding of PBDD/F environmental pollution and human exposure levels. Although PBDD/Fs behave similarly to dioxins, different congener profiles between PBDD/Fs and dioxins in the environment indicates their different sources and formation mechanisms. Herein, potential sources and formation mechanisms of PBDD/Fs were critically discussed, and current knowledge gaps and future directions for PBDD/F research are highlighted. An understanding of PBDD/F formation pathways will allow for development of synergistic control strategies for PBDD/Fs, dioxins, and other dioxin-like POPs.

Investigation on the PCDD/Fs distribution of quenched off-gas from electric arc furnace

The method of quenching was adopted to reduce the emission of PCDD/Fs from a pilot scrap preheated EAF. Because quenching can effectively inhibit the de novo synthesis of dioxins. Meanwhile the temperatures at the inlet and outlet of the quenching part of EAF off-gas were measured to investigate the quenching effect. The results show that the temperatures of the off-gas are quenched from about 1300 °C to about 250 °C in the whole tap-to-tap cycle of EAF, which attains the expected cooling effect. The dioxin Toxic Equivalent Quantity (TEQ) concentrations and congener distributions of off-gas and three kinds of sampling ash were analyzed. The results indicate that the TEQ concentration of PCDD/Fs is 0.13 ng-I-TEQ/Nm³ at the outlet of the chimney A (D4), which is far below the dioxin emission limit for EAFs (0.5 ng-I-TEQ/Nm³) in China. At the same time the fingerprint suggests that the quenching effectively restrains the de novo synthesis, and dioxins de novo synthesize in the following flue and bag filter to some extent.

Twenty-year trends and exposure assessment of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans in human serum from the Seoul citizens

This study investigated polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in air (n = 108) and human serum (n = 1802) samples collected over 20 years to evaluate the long-term exposure to PCDD/Fs and health effects on the Korean general population. The serum PCDD/F levels were higher in males than in females and were significantly correlated with age, body mass index, and manifestation of diabetes mellitus. From 2000 to 2019, the PCDD/F levels declined by 96% in the air, but only by 36% in the serum, because PCDD/Fs are relatively stable in the human body and are exposed to humans after PCDD/Fs are distributed and migrated in various environmental matrices. The PCDD/F levels in other environmental matrices have also decreased at rates that differed among the matrices due to the different retention times and changes in continuous input of contaminants. As PCDD/Fs migrate from environmental matrices to the human body, the fraction of PCDDs increased whereas that of PCDFs decreased because of their relatively short half-lives. This study provides a concrete evidence that PCDD/F emissions by national regulations can achieve long-term reduction in human exposure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the longest and largest study to evaluate the long-term trends and annual changes of PCDD/Fs in the atmosphere and human serum, simultaneously.

Qualitative and quantitative changes in traffic and waste incineration PCDD/Fs in urban air and soils under different seasonal conditions (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona)

A sampling and analysis scheme was implemented to discriminate between inputs of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) at low concentrations in urban areas. Ambient air and soils were sampled and analyzed in five stations in the Metropolitan area of Barcelona (2018-2019); one located in a reference urban traffic site and four in the area of influence of an integrated waste management facility (IWMF) that included a solid waste incinerator. Seasonality was the main factor determining the PCDD/F composition, and involved lower values in the warmer months. This seasonal effect was related to enhanced photooxidation of PCDDs compared to PCDFs and faster depletion of the less chlorinated congeners due to volatility at higher ambient temperature; consistent with the compounds' octanol-air partition coefficients. The ratio 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorobenzofuran/1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorobenzofuran allowed, for the first time, identifying cases of preferential contributions of IWMF and traffic inputs, i.e. values of 0.06 and 0.32, respectively. Combination of this ratio with the airborne PCDD/F levels illustrated that the quantitative PCDD/F levels were not a useful criterion for elucidation between IWMF and traffic inputs. PCDD/Fs levels in soils ranged between 9.0 and 22 pg WHO-TEQ/g in the two sites closest to the IWMF, while the other sites, including the traffic site, showed values between 0.8 and 1.9 pg WHO-TEQ/g. The levels in the former group were higher than those observed in other urban areas and above 5 pg WHO-TEQ/g, which is a limit reference value in several European countries. The C₇ and C₈ observed congener distributions in all soils examined were different from those in the air samples and similar to those reported in sewage sludge from waste water treatment plants, not showing influences from IWMF or traffic PCDD/F inputs.

Long-term nationwide assessment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls ambient air concentrations for ten years in South Korea

In this study, seasonal/regional variations of Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) and dioxin like-polychlorinated biphenyls in the ambient air were monitored for ten years (2008-2017) using a high volume air sampler. As a result of strict regulation enforced by Korea Ministry of Environment in 2008, PCDD/DFs concentrations in the ambient air decreased from 0.051 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2009 to 0.014 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2017 which was comparably associated with cut-down of their emission sources from 880.2 g I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2001 to 24.2 g I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2015; revealing that it was only 2.7% against that of 2001. In 2017, mean TEQ concentration level of PCDD/DFs in the air of South Korea was quite low in comparison to its ambient environmental standards of 0.6 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 for PCDD/DFs. Particularly, the sum of PCDD/DFs in the background revealed the lowest level, however, the fraction of octachlorodibenzodioxin among other isomers exposed at the highest level in this study, suggesting that the ambient air quality in the background being studied was severely and persistently impaired by inflowing unknown sources of any possible anthropogenic transboundary migratory air pollutants. Moreover, this study conducted the scientific analysis of the long-term variations in the ambient air and emission sources using principal component analysis. From this of 10 years long-term nationwide assessments for the PCDD/DFs and dl-PCBs in the ambient air, it is possible to prove that South Korean environmental policy to manage POPs has been successfully conducted for the last ten years.

Atmospheric Concentrations and Health Implications of PAHs, PCBs and PCDD/Fs in the Vicinity of a Heavily Industrialized Site in Greece

Background: Thriassion Plain is considered the most industrialized area in Greece and thus a place where emissions of pollutants are expected to be elevated, leading to the degradation of air quality. Methods: Simultaneous determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was performed in PM10 samples. SPSS statistical package was employed for statistical analysis and source apportionment purposes. Cancer risk was estimated from total persistent organic pollutants’ (POPs) dataset according to the available literature. Results: POPs concentrations in particulate matter were measured in similar levels compared to other studies in Greece and worldwide, with mean concentrations of ΣPAHs, ΣPCDD/Fs, dioxin like PCBs, and indicator PCBs being 7.07 ng m−3, 479 fg m−3, 1634 fg m−3, and 18.1 pg m−3, respectively. Seasonal variations were observed only for PAHS with higher concentrations during cold period. MDRs, D/F ratios, and principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted combustions as the main source of POPs’ emissions. Estimation of particles’ carcinogenic and mutagenic potential indicates the increased toxicity of PM10 during cold periods, and cancer risk assessment concludes that 3 to 4 people out of 100,000 may suffer from cancer due to POPs’ inhalation. Conclusions: Increased cancer risk for citizens leads to the necessity of chronic POPs’ monitoring in Thriassion Plain, and such strategies have to be a priority for Greek environmental authorities.

Atmospheric bulk deposition of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the vicinity of MSWI in Shanghai, China

Atmospheric bulk deposition samples were gathered month by month throughout a year at two sites in vicinity of a MSWI in Shanghai, to carry out an investigation on the atmospheric bulk deposition fluxes and seasonal variations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxinsand dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The atmospheric bulk deposition fluxes of PCDD/Fs ranged from 23.5 to 560 pg m^-2·d^-1 (1.01-23.9 pg WHO-TEQ·m^-2·d^-1), with an average value of 136 pg m^-2·d^-1 (5.08 pg WHO-TEQ·m^-2·d^-1) in the Vicinity of the MSWI in Shanghai. The measured concentrations were well compared with those from urban or industrial sites in other regions in China and abroad. The seasonal trend of atmospheric bulk deposition fluxes of PCDD/Fs throughout a year exhibited as high levels in summer, moderate levels in winter, and low levels in spring and autumn. The principal component analysis (PCA) indicated not only the MSWI, but also vehicle emission was the indispensable source of PCDD/Fs in the vicinity of the MSWI, especially for the urban areas. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) apportioned 5 source categories: MSWI, diesel vehicles, atmosphere background, industrial combustion and un-leaded gas vehicles, accounting for 43.3%, 38.1%, 6.89%, 6.19% and 5.50% in average, respectively of PCDD/Fs in atmospheric bulk deposition in the vicinity of the MSWI in Shanghai, China.

Concentrations, Sources, and Potential Human Health Risks of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PAHs in Rural Atmosphere Around Chemical Plants in Jiangsu Province, China

Concentrations and sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a rural atmosphere near industrial zones in Jiangsu, China were determined and the associated risks were assessed. The concentrations of ΣPCDD/Fs, ΣPCBs, and ΣPAHs ranged from 11.9-57.7 pg·m^-3, 0.58-2.71 pg m^-3, and 11-18 ng m^-3, respectively. Principal component analysis suggested that the contamination of air with PCDD/Fs and PCBs mainly originated from industrial activities and combustion processes. In contrast, the major source of PAHs was the combustion of petroleum, coal, and biomass. These data were used to estimate the exposure of the population living nearby to these persistent organic pollutants and to evaluate the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with their inhalation. Our study are likely to be helpful for developing and implementing regulation strategies for PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PAHs in the atmosphere around industrial and surrounding residential areas.

Airborne Pheromone Quantification in Treated Vineyards with Different Mating Disruption Dispensers against Lobesia botrana

Mating disruption (MD) is widely used against the European grapevine moth (EGVM), Lobesia botrana (Denis and Schiffermüller; Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), by installing passive dispensers or aerosol devices. The present work reports a new sampling and quantification methodology to obtain absolute data about field airborne pheromone concentration based on air samplings and sensitive chromatographic-spectroscopic methods. Samplings were performed in fields treated with passive dispensers or aerosol devices at different moments throughout the crop cycle to study how they act and how the disruption is triggered. Moreover, pheromone adsorption and releasing capacity of vine leaves were studied to elucidate their role in the disruption. Although both types of dispensers were effective in limiting the damage inflicted by EGVM, they performed differently and provided different airborne pheromone concentration profiles. Results also proved that leaves were able to adsorb and release part of the airborne pheromone acting as subsequent and additional pheromone sources. This fact could explain the different concentration profiles. Moreover, our results suggest that lower pheromone emission than that of the current passive dispensers still could provide an adequate performance in the field. Competitive mechanisms involved in MD using both dispensers, the dynamics of the airborne pheromone throughout the time and the importance of the canopy are discussed.

Inconsistencies of e-waste management in developing nations - Facts and plausible solutions

Electronic and electrical equipment (EEE) became an integral part of daily life and had an immense influence on the economy. The skyrocketing demand, progressive technologies, and high dependency resulted in inconceivable utilization of EEE. However, these scientific expansions shortened the life span of EEE, thereby generating massive volumes of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). On a global perspective, Oceania generates a per capita of 17.3 kg/inh (inhabitants), followed by Europe 16.6 kg/inh, America 11.6 kg/inh, Asia 4.2 kg/inh and the least contribution by Africa 1.9 kg/inh. As known, EEE comprises complex metallic and non-metallic fractions causing severe discrepancies within the ecosystem, endangering the living species; if not dealt with properly. Thus, there is a pressing need of immediate addressal on the effective e-waste management strategies both from developed and developing countries. On the spin side, the separation of the precious fractions from the EEE on the end-of-life may be a twin dimensional strategy of economic addition, and plummeting the alarming level threats to ecology. However, these menaces are well tackled by the developed countries to some extent by the stringent law enactments, establishing proper recycling facilities, and trading to the underdeveloped and developing nations. But, the majority of the developing and under developed nations lacks the statutes, gaps in policy making, socio-economic-cultural barriers, technology, and the appropriate treatment facilities. In addition, the review identified ten major shortfalls (10L's) refraining the effective e-waste management, especially in the developing and under developed nations. Among which, integration of the formal and informal sectors, mandated network registry, stringent law enforcements, regulated transboundary movements, manufacturers responsibility, consumer awareness and improved eco designs, investing on effective recycling facilities, and improved disposal facilities holds the key. Further, replacing the traditional and conventional procedures with the futuristic and eco-friendly approaches such as chelation, inducing ionic liquids, integrated processes or hybrid technologies, micro factories, photo catalysis, and green adsorption will substantially harness the current barriers of the e-waste management. Finally, the present review will be a thorough glancing for the future research of e-waste management of meso-micro-macro scales.

Multiyear levels of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and PAHs in background air in central Europe and implications for deposition

This study presents four years ambient monitoring data of seventeen 2,3,7,8-chlorine substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), twelve dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) designed by the US EPA at a background site in central Europe during 2011-2014. The concentrations expressed as toxic equivalents (TEQs) using the WHO₂₀₀₅-scheme for PCDD/Fs (0.2 fg m^-3-61.1 fg m^-3) were higher than for dl-PCBs (0.01 fg m^-3-2.9 fg m^-3), while the opposite was found in terms of mass concentrations. ΣPAHs ranged from 0.20 ng m^-3 to 134 ng m^-3. The mass concentration profile of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and PAHs was similar throughout the four years. PCDD/Fs and PAHs concentrations were dominated by primary sources peaking in winter, while those of dl-PCBs were controlled by secondary sources characterized by a spring-summer peak. During 2011-2014, no significant decrease in the atmospheric levels of ΣPCDD/Fs was observed. On the other hand, the concentrations of Σdl-PCBs and ΣPAHs were decreasing, with halving times of 5.7 and 2.7 years, respectively. We estimated that 422 pg m^-2 year^-1-567 pg m^-2 year^-1 TEQ PCDD/Fs and 3.48 pg m^-2 year^-1-15.8 pg m^-2 year^-1 TEQ dl-PCBs were transferred from the air to the ground surfaces via dry particulate deposition during 2011-2014.

Source apportionment of airborne PCDD/F at industrial and urban sites in Busan, South Korea

Long-term atmospheric measurement of 17 total (gaseous and particulate) polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) has been made from 2007 to 2016 at five industrial and urban sites in Busan, South Korea, based on their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. In the present study, two pooled datasets covering a combination of 2 industry sites and 3 urban sites have been subjected to positive matrix factorization (PMF) to identify and quantify the major sources of PCDD/Fs. Additionally, PMF has been applied to the industrial urban dataset consisting of both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and PCDD/Fs. The results show that the sum of PCDD/F mass (Σ17PCDD/Fs) at the industrial sites is determined by five major sources: non-ferrous metal production (33.7%), diesel vehicle emissions (30.2%), ferrous metal production (22.4%), other industrial emissions (11.1%), and traffic emissions (2.6%), while the PAH mass (Σ16PAHs) is predominantly associated with emissions from coal combustion, followed by traffic emissions. At the urban sites, the largest contribution to the Σ17PCDD/Fs was observed from transported emissions being emitted from metallurgical industry (75.5%), followed by diesel vehicle emissions (24.5%). The application of congener-specific toxicity to PCDD/F mass (Σ₁₇fg I-TEQ Sm^-3) indicates enhanced contributions from the ferrous metallurgical emission factor associated with penta- and hexa-chlorinated furans across the study sites.

A review of levels and profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in different environmental media from China

This review provides a summary of the levels and profiles of PCDD/Fs throughout China, as reported in peer reviewed literatures since 1997. The literature shows that PCDD/Fs are widespread in various environmental media including air, water, sediment, and soil. PCDD/Fs concentrations in air were relatively low in most regions, with only a few areas considered polluted. Many studies reported seasonal trends, with higher and lower concentrations in winter and summer, respectively. We analyzed the factors affecting the concentrations of dioxins in air and summarized the causes of seasonal changes. As hydrophobic organic compounds, PCDD/Fs readily accumulate in sediments. The distribution of dioxins in sediment in Bohai Sea area was mainly introduced and the factors affecting concentrations of dioxins were studied. The levels of dioxins in soil in different regions varied greatly, with higher levels in areas close to pollution sources. We examined the dioxins concentrations in soil in places where the levels were very low (including the Tibet Plateau and other remote areas), contaminated areas, and other areas. Apart from the contaminated areas, the dioxins concentrations in soil were low. The results of the relatively low number of studies that have investigated PCDD/Fs in water have reported no obvious pollution in some waters, apart from Dongting Lake. PCDD/Fs levels across China are similar to those worldwide. Point sources, mainly related to local geographic, economic, and historical factors, were the most common source of contamination. E-waste dismantling and chemical production has the greatest impact on PCDD/Fs in different media.

Spatial and temporal variation, source profile of PCDD/Fs in the atmosphere of a municipal waste incinerator in China

The mass concentrations, toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) concentrations and congener profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the stack flue gas and ambient air of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) were monitored in this study to evaluate the levels, emission characteristics, seasonal variation and emission sources of PCDD/Fs. Thirty-one ambient air samples were collected from four sites around MSWI during 2016-2017, and twelve stack flue gas samples were collected from one MSWI. Results showed that the PCDD/Fs concentrations of the stack flue gas ranged from 0.0077 to 0.021 ng I-TEQ/Nm³, with an average value of 0.016 ng I-TEQ/Nm³. The ambient air samples collected in 2016 and 2017 ranged from 0.017 to 0.27, and 0.035-0.27 pg I-TEQ/Nm³, with an average value of 0.078 and 0.10 pg I-TEQ/Nm³, respectively. The 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PCDF always contributes most to toxicity both in stack flue gas and ambient air samples. PCDD/Fs in the ambient air of the study area showed significant seasonal differences, and the total concentration of PCDD/Fs was highest in winter, which was about 3.5-7.5 times that of summer. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used to determine the correlation between MSWI emissions and PCDD/Fs in ambient air. It is worth mentioning that MSWI is not the main source of PCDD/Fs in ambient air.

Emission profiles and formation pathways of 2,3,7,8-substituted and non-2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in secondary copper smelters

Secondary copper smelting production is one of the largest polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) emission sources in the world. However, the formations and emissions of non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs have rarely been studied. Toxicology and metabolism studies have proved that non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs may also be toxic to mammals. To better explore the pathways and mechanisms involved in transformation among non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/F and 2,3,7,8-PCDD/F congeners, their full picture was investigated in stack gas and fly ash samples collected in typical secondary copper smelting plants. The concentration ranges for 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs and non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs in the stack gas samples were 0.09-5.24 ng/Nm³ and 0.11-7.47 ng/Nm³, respectively. The corresponding concentration ranges in the fly ash samples were 20-2712 ng/g and 2.7-818 ng/g. PCDD/F emissions were mainly from the oxidation stage, and these emissions contributed to 42.6-44.8% of the total emissions from the secondary copper smelting processes. Lower chlorinated PCDD/Fs partitioned more into the stack gas, whereas higher chlorinated PCDD/Fs were more likely to concentrate in the fly ash. Non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs were more likely than 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs to associate with the gas phase. Chlorination transformation may occur among PCDD congeners, including 2,3,7,8-PCDD and non-2,3,7,8-PCDD congeners.

Development and performance evaluation of a GIS-based metric to assess exposure to airborne pollutant emissions from industrial sources

BACKGROUND

Dioxins are environmental and persistent organic carcinogens with endocrine disrupting properties. A positive association with several cancers, including risk of breast cancer has been suggested.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to develop and assess performances of an exposure metric based on a Geographic Information System (GIS) through comparison with a validated dispersion model to estimate historical industrial dioxin exposure for its use in a case-control study nested within a prospective cohort.

METHODS

Industrial dioxin sources were inventoried over the whole French territory (n > 2500) and annual average releases were estimated between 1990 and 2008. In three selected areas (rural, urban and urban-costal), dioxin dispersion was modelled using SIRANE, an urban Gaussian model and exposure of the French E3N cohort participants was estimated. The GIS-based metric was developed, calibrated and compared to SIRANE results using a set of parameters (local meteorological data, characteristics of industrial sources, e.g. emission intensity and stack height), by calculating weighted kappa statistics (wκ) and coefficient of determination (R2). Furthermore, as performance evaluation, the final GIS-based metric was tested to assess atmospheric exposure to cadmium.

RESULTS

The concordance between the GIS-based metric and the dispersion model for dioxin exposure estimate was strong (wκ median = 0.78 (1st quintile = 0.72, 3rd quintile =0.82) and R2 median = 0.82 (1st quintile = 0.71, 3rd quintile = 0.87)). We observed similar performance for cadmium.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study demonstrated the ability of the GIS-based metric to reliably characterize long-term environmental dioxin and cadmium exposures as well as the pertinence of using dispersion modelling to construct and calibrate the GIS-based metric.

Emissions of 2,3,7,8-substituted and non-2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from secondary aluminum smelters

The secondary aluminum smelting industry is an important source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). However, the formations and emissions of non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs have rarely been studied. Non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs may also be metabolically toxic to mammalians. In this study, four typical secondary aluminum smelters were selected as demonstration smelters and the composition of the raw material they used was adjusted to investigate the influence on PCDD/F emissions and profiles. In addition to 17 congeners of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, 64 congeners of non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs were firstly reported. Strong, positive correlations were found between non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs and 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs. The concentrations of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs in stack gas and fly ash samples were 120.7-870.4 pg/Nm³ and 13.40-292.9 ng/g, respectively. Those of non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs in the stack gas and fly ash samples were 84.03-1183.7 pg/Nm³ and 7.20-344.7 ng/g, respectively. The raw material composition was a key factor affecting PCDD/F emissions and profiles. An analysis of Gibbs free energies (ΔG_f) showed that non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs could be transformed into 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, which would increase the PCDD/F environmental risks. The emission inventories of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, and International Toxic Equivalents from Chinese secondary aluminum smelters in 2013 were 8247 g, 7253 g, and 608.6 g, respectively. The results of this study could contribute to potential risk evaluations and effective reduction of non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs.

Sources identification of PCDD/Fs in soil and atmospheric deposition in Taiwan

PCDD/Fs are among pollutants, which gain major concern from Taiwan government and citizens during industrialization. PCDD/Fs can be emitted into the atmosphere, soil, and water environment in either vapor or solid forms. Atmospheric deposition is the main pathways for atmospheric PCDD/Fs to precipitate on surface soil. In this study, a simultaneous analysis of both soil and deposition PCDD/Fs was done to investigate the relationship between in-soil and deposited PCDD/Fs in Taiwan. Soil samples (n = 84) and atmospheric deposition samples (n = 57) were collected within overlapped periods of time. Geometric mean of 10.4 pg WHO-TEQ/g was found in the soil samples when the geometric mean of atmospheric deposited PCDD/F concentrations was found to be 7.39 pg WHO-TEQ/m²/day. Concentration of PCDD/Fs in samples collected in industrial location were higher than those collected in other locations in all sampling areas. OCDD, OCDF, HpCDD, HpCDF, were the predominant congeners in PCDD/F profile in both soil and atmospheric deposited samples, when 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF were major contributors for PCDD/F fingerprint with WHO-TEQ transformation. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis showed that 83% of soil PCDD/Fs correlate with atmospheric deposition process originated from industrial activities (44%) and long range transport activities (39%). Furthermore, the PMF analysis found long range transport, municipal solid water incinerators (MSWIs), industrial waste incinerators (IWIs), electric arc furnace, recycling process of aluminum, sintering plants to be the main sources contributing to atmospheric deposited PCDD/Fs.

Assessment of POPs in air from Spain using passive sampling from 2008 to 2015. Part II: Spatial and temporal observations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs

Time series (2008-2015) of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in ambient air from the Spanish Monitoring Program were analyzed. A total of 321 samples were collected seasonally each year in 5 urban and 7 background sites by means of passive air sampling. Air concentrations were higher at urban than background sites (urban vs. background concentration ranges): PCDD/Fs (26.9-1010 vs. 20.0-357 fg/m³), non-ortho PCBs (0.113-3.14 vs. 0.042-2.00 pg/m³) and mono-ortho PCBs (0.644-41.3 vs. 0.500-32.8 pg/m³). Results showed significant decreases from 2009 for non-ortho PCBs and PCDD/Fs as well as for WHO₂₀₀₆-TEQs. These declines were sharper, and sometimes only significant, in urban places resulting in converging levels at urban and background sites for these pollutants at the end of the study period. In contrast, mono-ortho PCBs did not show any significant variation but a steady flat temporal behavior in their concentrations, suggesting the existence of different sources between mono-ortho and non-ortho PCBs. Seasonality was observed for air burdens of all these POPs. PCDD/Fs were mostly measured at higher concentrations in colder than in hot seasons, and the opposite was true for dl-PCBs. Seasonal variations for PCDD/Fs appeared to be related to changes in their sources (e.g. domestic heating, open burning) rather than to temperature per se. In contrast, environmental temperature dependent factors (e.g. increased partitioning into the gas phase) drove seasonal variations in dl-PCBs instead of seasonal changes in their sources. Regarding spatial patterns, significant greater levels of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs were generally found in cities compared to background areas, pointing out the role of densely populated areas as sources for these pollutants in Spain. As proven by our results, long-term monitoring activities are essential to assess and understand temporal behaviors for these POPs, as well as to evaluate the achievement of Stockholm Convention objectives.

Chemical characterization of fine and ultrafine PM, direct and indirect genotoxicity of PM and their organic extracts on pulmonary cells

Particulate matter in ambient air constitutes a complex mixture of fine and ultrafine particles composed of various chemical compounds including metals, ions, and organics. A multidisciplinary approach was developed by studying physico-chemical characteristics and mechanisms involved in the toxicity of particulate atmospheric pollution. PM_0.3-2.5 and PM_2.5 including ultrafine particles were sampled in Dunkerque, a French industrialized seaside city. PM samples were characterized from a chemical and toxicological point of view. Physico-chemical characterization evidenced that PM_2.5 comes from several sources: natural ones, such as soil resuspension and marine sea-salt emissions, as well as anthropogenic ones, such as shipping traffic, road traffic, and industrial activities. Human BEAS-2B lung cells were exposed to PM_0.3-2.5, or to the Extractable Organic Matter (EOM) of PM_0.3-2.5 and PM_2.5. These exposures induced several mechanisms of action implied in the genotoxicity, such as oxidative DNA adducts and DNA Damage Response. The toxicity of PM-EOM was higher for the sample including the ultrafine fraction (PM_2.5) containing also higher concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These results evidenced the major role of organic compounds in the toxicity of PM.

Atmospheric concentrations and gas-particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs around Hochiminh city

Atmospheric PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs samples were collected in Hochiminh city, Vietnam to address the effect of meteorological parameters, especially rainfall, on the occurrence and gas/particle partitioning of these persistent organic pollutants. The results indicate that PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs concentrations in industrial site are higher than those measured in commercial and rural sites during both rainy and dry seasons. In terms of mass concentration, ambient PCDD/F levels measured in dry season are significantly higher than those measured in rainy season while dl-PCB levels do not vary significantly between rainy and dry seasons. The difference could be attributed to different gas/particle partitioning characteristics between PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. PCDD/Fs are found to be mainly distributed in particle phase while dl- PCBs are predominantly distributed in gas phase in both rainy and dry seasons. Additionally, Junge-Pankow and Harner-Bidleman models are applied to better understand the gas/particle partitioning of these pollutants in atmosphere. As a results, both PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs are under non-equilibrium gas/particle partitioning condition, and PCDD/Fs tend to reach equilibrium easier in rainy season while there are no clear trend for dl-PCBs. Harner-Bidleman model performs better in evaluating the gas/particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs while Junge-Pankow model results in better prediction for dl-PCBs.

Gas/particle partitioning and particle size distribution of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in urban ambient air

Urban ambient air samples, including gas-phase (PUF), total suspended particulates (TSP), PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM₁ airborne particle fractions were collected to evaluate gas-particle partitioning and size particle distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Clausius-Clapeyron equation, regressions of logKp vs logP_L and logK_OA, and human respiratory risk assessment were used to evaluate local or long-distance transport sources, gas-particle partitioning sorption mechanisms, and implications for health. Total ambient air levels (gas phase+particulate phase) of TPCBs and TPCDD/Fs, were 437 and 0.07pgm^-3 (median), respectively. Levels of PCDD/F in the gas phase (0.004-0.14pgm^-3, range) were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those found in the particulate phase (0.02-0.34pgm^-3). The concentrations of PCDD/Fs were higher in winter. In contrast, PCBs were mainly associated to the gas phase, and displayed maximum levels in warm seasons, probably due to an increase in evaporation rates, supported by significant and strong positive dependence on temperature observed for several congeners. No significant differences in PCDD/Fs and PCBs concentrations were detected between the different particle size fractions considered (TSP, PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM₁), reflecting that these chemicals are mainly bounded to PM₁. The toxic content of samples was also evaluated. Total toxicity (PUF+TSP) attributable to dl-PCBs (13.4fg-TEQ₀₅ m^-3, median) was higher than those reported for PCDD/Fs (6.26fg-TEQ₀₅ m^-3). The inhalation risk assessment concluded that the inhalation of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs pose a low cancer risk in the studied area.

Evaluating the effect of rain on the fate of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) accumulated in polluted trees in Amman, Jordan

Open combustion of solid waste is one of the main sources of the emission of dioxin and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs). Ambient dioxin will eventually undergo depositions on soils and tree leaves. Pine trees have shown an ability to store dioxin in their needles allowing biomonitoring of dioxin atmospheric concentrations. Infiltration can transport dioxin to greater depths into the ground, on one hand, while vaporization can allow dioxin to return back to the atmosphere on the other. Several studies evaluated the migration of dioxin between two compartments; however, few studies have attempted to understand the fate of non-conservative PCDDs and PCDFs in an unsteady state system of more than two mediums. This study focused on the transportation of dioxin between polluted trees and the underlying soil through the effect of rain water. For approximately 10 years, pine trees in this study have been exposed to emissions generated by the open combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) from a fixed location. Soil samples located further from the point source had generally lower dioxin concentrations. Dioxin concentrations were correlated to distance from the source using least square regression. Soil samples below contaminated trees had dioxin concentrations 10-35% greater than the calculated measurements for the same spots using the regression model. By detecting these spikes in concentrations, it was possible to identify pools of dioxin found directly under the contaminated trees-indicating a rinsing effect of rain water on the stored dioxin on the trees' needles.

Contributions of dioxins and furans to the urban sediment signature: The role of atmospheric particles

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDF) are widely distributed in the environment. The diverse production processes that form these compounds lead to a range of chemical signatures although weathering may cause changes to these signature over time and with increasing distance from their origin. Chemical signatures in sediments based on 17 PCDD/Fs were developed in Concepcion, a Chilean city in the middle of a complex hydrological system which contains several small urban freshwater bodies and the River Bio-Bio. The region has numerous industrial and domestic activities that may contribute PCDD/Fs to the environment. Sediments from urban lakes had higher concentrations of dioxins and furans (mean=941ng·kg^-1) than either a remote lake (335ng·kg^-1) located 32km from the city or marine samples (mean=124ng·kg^-1). Up to 85% of the compounds present in all sediment samples could be explained by the chemical signature associated with airborne particulates leaving only 15-30% of the chemical signature potentially arising from other sources. The remote lake had higher proportions of the less-chlorinated compounds compared to the urban samples.

Assessment of long-term exposure to airborne dioxin and cadmium concentrations in the Lyon metropolitan area (France)

Identifying the long-term effects of airborne pollutants requires the computation of the spatial and temporal variability of their concentration in air to estimate the exposure of the population. To estimate exposure levels of individuals in a breast cancer case control study nested in a national prospective cohort, we determine here the differential impact of a variety of cadmium and dioxin sources on urban air over a large urban area and over a period of almost 20years. To that end, we couple an emission model, to estimate dioxin and cadmium atmospheric annual releases, with an urban dispersion model in order to compute pollutant concentration fields at a fine temporal (1h) and spatial (25m) resolution. The reliability of the modelling chain is compared to two types of measurement: i) localized industrial emissions and ii) dioxin and cadmium air monitoring data (from 2007 to 2008), collected at a fixed station, placed in the city centre, as well as at three mobile short-term dioxin monitoring stations, located in the suburbs (the latter providing dioxin data, only). Comparisons between measured and estimated emissions show non-negligible difference, with a correlations for dioxin (r_s=0.42) and cadmium (r_s=0.41). Despite this, mean values between estimated emissions and emission measurements are close to each other, in particular for cadmium. Weekly average modelled concentrations show an overall good agreement with weekly average measured concentrations in spring and summer but are generally lower than monitored data in winter due to peak concentrations from diffuse sources representing an important proportion of emissions in 2007/2008. The model provides better results for cadmium than for dioxin. Despite the relevant errors in the model predictions, the model meets the validation criteria, defined by Chang and Hanna for an urban dispersion model. Simulation scenarios of air pollutant concentrations, reconstructed over the last 20years, show the effects of the variability of the pollutant sources over time with decreasing levels of dioxin and cadmium concentrations in air. This is primarily due to the reduction in localized industrial releases, which results in a general trend of homogenization of the exposure of the population. The model further allows us to dissociate the contribution of different types of pollutant sources on the population exposure. The impact on local concentrations due to industrial emissions, which were originally responsible for the major impact on air quality, is shown to drop over the years by 99% and 92% for dioxin and cadmium, respectively. Today, the major contributions are due to diffuse miscellaneous sources in the case of dioxin and to traffic-related emissions for cadmium. Average modelled concentrations at the study subjects' residential locations range from 10.2 to 82.1fg-TEQ/m³ for dioxin and 0.10 to 1.6ng/m³ for cadmium and are comparable with data from the literature. The study results will be essential to increase the accuracy of the assessment of long-term airborne dioxin and cadmium exposure and improve the results of epidemiological studies.

Results of the second national forest soil inventory in Germany - Interpretation of level and stock profiles for PCDD/F and PCB in terms of vegetation and humus type

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in 86 humic topsoil layers and in a subset of 11 randomly selected top mineral forest soils at the depths of 0-5cm and 5-10cm collected from different federal states of Germany. The distribution of these persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in humic topsoils with respect to vegetation cover (coniferous vs. deciduous vs. mixed), total organic carbon (TOC), altitude and latitude data was investigated. There is cross correlation between the contents and TOC while the correlation with latitude indicates higher abundances of POPs in central Germany where there is high population density accompanied with industrial activities. The calculated stocks suggest that humus type (mor, mull, or moder) in conjunction with forest type can explain the relative POPs abundances in different soil layers. Generally, humic topsoils show highest contents of POPs compare to the two mineral soils with a ratio of 100:10:1. However, the stock humic layers of coniferous stands contribute about 50% to the total stock, whereas at deciduous stands the stock is mainly located in the upper mineral soil layer (0-5cm). The soil-water distribution coefficients (Kd) were calculated to estimate the potential translocation in the different soil types. The Kd values vary among the PCBs and PCDD/Fs congeners and are most variable for humic topsoils. There is pronounced chemical abundance in the top mineral soils with increasing Kd and this points to non-water bound transport processes for superlipophilic compounds.

Emission characteristics and vapour/particulate phase distributions of PCDD/F in a hazardous waste incinerator under transient conditions

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) emission characteristics and vapour/particulate phase partitions under three continued operation conditions, i.e. shut-down, start-up and after start-up, were investigated by sampling stack gas. The results indicated that the PCDD/F emission levels were 0.40-18.03 ng I-TEQ Nm^-3, much higher than the annual monitoring level (0.016 ng I-TEQ Nm^-3). Additionally, the PCDD/F emission levels in start-up were higher than the other two conditions. Furthermore, the PCDD/F congener profiles differed markedly between shut-down and start-up, and the chlorination degree of PCDD/F increased in shut-down and decreased evidently in start-up. Moreover, PCDD/F vapour/particulate phase distributions varied significantly under three transient conditions. The PCDD/F vapour phase proportion decreased as the shut-down process continued, then increased as the start-up process proceeded, finally more than 98% of the PCDD/F congeners were distributed in the vapour phase after start-up. The correlations between log(C_v/C_s ) versus [Formula: see text] of each PCDD/F congener in stack gas were disorganized in shut-down, and trend to a linear distribution after start-up. Besides, polychlorinated biphenyl emissions show behaviour similar to that of PCDD/F, and the lower chlorinated congeners have a stronger relationship with 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, such as M1CB and D2CB.

Occurrence, Loading, and Exposure of Atmospheric Particle-Bound POPs at the African and European Edges of the Western Mediterranean Sea

A comparative study for 62 toxic chemicals based on the simultaneous monthly collection of aerosol samples during 2015-2016 in two coastal cities at both the African (Bizerte, Tunisia) and European (Marseille, France) edges of the Western Mediterranean basin is presented. Legacy polychlorinated biphenyls (∑₁₈PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (∑₁₇PCDD/Fs) show generally higher median levels at the African edge (2.1 and 0.2 pg m^-3, respectively) compared to the European coastal site (1.0 and 0.08 pg m^-3, respectively). Contrarily, the "emerging" polybrominated diphenyl ethers' (∑₂₇PBDEs) median concentrations were higher in Marseille (∼9.0 pg m^-3) compared to Bizerte (∼6.0 pg m^-3). Different past usages and current emission patterns were found at both edges of the Western Mediterranean, most probably linked to the respective different regulatory frameworks for toxic chemicals. Our results indicate that the total organic carbon (TOC) and/or the elemental carbon (EC) contents in the atmospheric aerosol may have a stronger effect than the total suspended particle (TSP) content as a whole on the spatial-temporal variability and the long-range atmospheric transport potential of the studied POPs. A "jumping" of the PBDE local atmospheric stocks from the Northwestern European Mediterranean edge to the Northwestern African coast seems to be possible under favorable conditions at present. While a higher PBDE median loading is estimated for the Marseille area (∼550 ng m^-2 y^-1) compared to Bizerte (∼400 ng m^-2 y^-1), the median PCB and PCDD/F dry deposition fluxes were higher at the African site, resulting in a 3-fold higher toxic equivalent (TEQ) loading of dioxin-like pollutants (400 pg TEQ m^-2 y^-1) compared to Marseille (∼140 pg TEQ m^-2 y^-1), with potential implications for aquatic organisms. However, the inhalation exposure assessment points to a minimum risk for human health at both sites.

Estimating national dioxins and furans emissions, major sources, intake doses, and temporal trends in Iran from 1990-2010

BACKGROUND

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are highly toxic persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which can cause various health outcomes, such as cancer. As a part of the National and Sub-national Burden of Disease Study (NASBOD), we aimed to estimate dioxins and furans national emissions, identify their main sources, estimate daily intake doses, and assess their trend from 1990-2010 in Iran.

METHODS

The Toolkit for Identification and Quantification of Releases of Dioxins, Furans and Other Unintentional POPs, which is developed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP 2013), was used to estimate the emissions of PCDD/PCDFs from several sources into the air, water, land, residue, and other products. The daily intake doses were estimated using a linear regression of estimated emissions by UNEP Toolkit and average intake doses in other countries. Finally, the trend of PCDD/PCDFs emissions and daily intake doses were explored from 1990-2010.

RESULTS

The total emissions were estimated as 960 g Toxic Equivalents (g TEQ) for 1990 and 1957 g TEQ for 2010 (18.2 and 26.8 g TEQ per million capita, respectively). The estimations suggest that albeit contribution of open burning to PCDD/PCDFs emissions has been declining from 1990 to 2010, it remained the major source of emissions in Iran contributing to about 45.8% out of total emissions in 1990 to 35.7% in 2010. We further found that PCDD/PCDFs are mostly emitted into the ambient air, followed by residue, land, products, and water. The daily intake doses were estimated to be 3.1 and 5.4 pg TEQ/kg bw/day for 1990 and 2010, respectively. We estimated an increasing trend for PCDD/PCDFs emissions and intake doses in Iran from 1990-2010.

CONCLUSIONS

The high levels of emissions, intake doses, and their increasing trend in Iran may pose a substantial health risk to the Iranian population. Further studies with more rigorous methods are recommended but this should not circumvent taking appropriate policy actions against these pollutants. Currently, Iran has no standard for dioxins and furans. Adaptation of the World Health Organization recommended guidelines might be an appropriate starting point to control dioxins and furans emissions.

Sequestration of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin by activated carbon eliminates bioavailability and the suppression of immune function in mice

The effectiveness of activated carbon in reducing the bioavailability of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) was examined from the context of using in situ sorbent amendments to remediate soils/sediments contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). This technology has gained rapid acceptance based on observations that activated carbon amendments predictably lower PCDD/F concentrations in water and bioaccumulation by simple aquatic organisms and earthworms; it has been assumed that bioavailability to mammals is similarly reduced, although this has been disproven for other sorbent materials. In the present study TCDD was absorbed to a microporous activated carbon (TCDD-AC) using the incipient wetness method. An aqueous suspension of TCDD-AC and an equivalent dosage of TCDD in corn oil were administered by oral gavage to B6C3F1 mice. The relative bioavailability of TCDD-AC was determined by quantifying and comparing the hepatic induction of cyp1A1 (messenger ribonucleic acid) and suppression of the immunoglobulin M antibody-forming cell immune response by the 2 forms of TCDD. A concentration-dependent response was observed for both assays when TCDD in corn oil was administered to mice. However, when equivalent masses of TCDD were administered as TCDD-AC, no induction of cyp1A1 or suppression of the immunoglobulin M antibody-forming cell response was observed. The absence of these 2 sensitive aryl hydrocarbon receptor-mediated responses in mice provides the first direct evidence that activated carbon can sequester TCDD in a form that eliminates its bioavailability to mammals. These results support the premise that activated carbon can be used to reduce the bioeffective dose of TCDD delivered to mammals and that activated carbon amendments may provide a low-cost alternative to traditional remediation technologies. Atmospheric PCDD/F concentration and source apportionment in typical rural, Agent Orange hotspots, and industrial areas in Vietnam

Vietnam has a double burden of dioxin from both industrial sources and historical sources. To evaluate the concentration of PCDD/Fs in ambient air in different areas of Vietnam and their possible sources, atmospheric samples were collected from three areas namely Son La (rural area) and Da Nang (harbor - Agent Orange hotspot area), and Ho Chi Minh City (metropolitan - industrial city). Vapor and solid phases of PCDD/Fs were collected and analyzed following the TO-9A sampling method. Principal Component Analysis and Positive Matrix Factorization model were applied to characterize the possible source. The average concentrations of PCDD/Fs were found to be 21.3 ± 13 fg I-TEQ/m³ in Son La (n = 32), 65.2 ± 34 fg I-TEQ/m³ in Da Nang (n = 16) and 139 ± 84 fg I-TEQ/m³ in Ho Chi Minh City (n = 8). The findings of this study targeted open burning (42%) and biomass burning (51%) as the major emission sources of PCDD/Fs in ambient air of Son La, Vietnam. Major possible sources of PCDD/Fs in Da Nang could be transportation activities (64%), however, the other factor (36%) was suspected to be contaminated with 2,3,7,8-TeCDD from Agent Orange. Most of PCDD/Fs emitted in Ho Chi Minh City related to industrial activities (93%).

Air quality in the Olona Valley and in vitro human health effects

Air quality is a major point in current health policies in force globally to protect human health and ecosystems. Cardiovascular and lung diseases are the pathologies most commonly associated with air pollution and it has been estimated that exposure to particulate matters and ground-level ozone and nitric oxides caused >500.000 premature deaths in Europe. Although air quality was generally improved in the recent years, further efforts are required to reduce the impact of air pollution on humans. The present study applied a multidisciplinary approach to estimate the adverse effects on the health of the inhabitants of the Olona Valley in the north of Italy. Chemical analyses quantified the air levels of metals, dioxins, PCBs, PAHs and some macropollutants, including total, fine and coarse airborne particles. These results were used as input for the health risk assessment and in vitro bioassays were used to evaluate possible adverse effects on the respiratory tract due to the organic pollutants adsorbed on the airborne particulate matter. Critical alerts were identified from the air characterization and from the chemical-based risk assessment in view of the levels of arsenic, nickel, benzene, fine and coarse particulate matters found in the investigated zone, which can induce severe adverse effects on human health. These findings were confirmed by bioassays with A549 and BEAS-2B cells. We also used the cell transformation assay with BALB/c 3T3 cells to assess the carcinogenicity of the organic extracts of collected particles as an innovative tool to establish the possible chronic effects of inhaled pollutants. No significant changes in morphological transformation were found suggesting that, although the extracts contain compounds with proven carcinogenic potential, in our experimental conditions the levels of these pollutants were too low to induce carcinogenesis as resulted also by the chemical-based risk assessment.

Atmospheric concentration of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) at Umm-Al-Aish oil field-Kuwait

A sampling campaign was carried out to assess the impact of the oil field activities on the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in ambient air at Umm Al-Aish oil field in northern Kuwait. Sixteen samples were collected from March 2014 to January 2015. The concentrations of ΣPCDD/Fs were relatively high (33.6-586 fg I-TEQ/m³; median: 94.7 fg I-TEQ/m³; 31.2 to 516 fg WHO-TEQ₂₀₀₅/m³; median: 83.7 fg WHO-TEQ₂₀₀₅/m³) compared to those of dl-PCBs (3.9-36.8 WHO-TEQ₂₀₀₅/m³; median 9.9 WHO-TEQ₂₀₀₅/m³). A unique PCDD/F profile that was not previously reported was found. Further investigations should be conducted to establish whether the dioxin profile found in this study is specific for the desulfurization facility located in the study area or from oil flaring in the oil fields located upstream of the study area. The findings suggest that the oil field activities have a significant impact on the PCDD/F concentration in ambient air but a low or negligible influence on dl-PCBs' levels.

Organophosphate Ester Flame Retardants and Plasticizers in the Global Oceanic Atmosphere

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers and have been detected ubiquitously in the remote atmosphere. Fourteen OPEs were analyzed in 115 aerosol phase samples collected from the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans during the MALASPINA circumnavigation campaign. OPEs were detected in all samples with concentrations ranging from 360 to 4400 pg m^-3 for the sum of compounds. No clear concentration trends were found between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The pattern was generally dominated by tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), although tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) had a predominant role in samples close to continents and in those influenced by air masses originating in continents. The dry deposition fluxes of aerosol phase ∑₁₄OPE ranged from 4 to 140 ng m^-2 d^-1. An estimation of the OPE gas phase concentration and gross absorption fluxes by using three different sets of physical chemical properties suggested that the atmosphere-ocean diffusive exchange of OPEs could be 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than dry deposition. The associated organic phosphorus inputs coming from diffusive OPE fluxes were estimated to potentially trigger up to 1.0% of the reported primary production in the most oligotrophic oceanic regions. However, the uncertainty associated with these calculations is high and mostly driven by the uncertainty of the physical chemical properties of OPEs. Further constraints of the physical chemical properties and fluxes of OPEs are urgently needed, in order to estimate their environmental fate and relevance as a diffusive source of new organic phosphorus to the ocean.

Determination of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in Brazilian cow milk

The determination of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in raw cow milks have never been reported in Brazil. Since the consumption of food of animal origin, including milk and dairy products, is the major source of human exposure to these compounds, this study aimed to establish the levels and profile of seven PCDDs and ten PCDFs in raw cow milk samples collected in eight Brazilian states which among the major milk producer states. Raw milk samples were collected in 34 different dairy cattle farms during the summer of 2013. All PCDD/Fs congeners were found at least in some of the 34 samples studied. The octa-chlorinated congeners (OCDD and OCDF) were ubiquitous and also present in high concentrations. The mean values of WHO-TEQ_1998;2005 were respectively 1.66 and 1.36pgTEQg^-1 fat and samples taken in São Paulo showed the highest WHO-TEQ values (2.46 TEQ₁₉₉₈g^-1 fat and 2.10pgTEQ₂₀₀₅g^-1 fat). Although all samples showed some contamination level, all values were below the limit established by European Union for total PCDD/Fs in cow milk (3pgWHO-TEQ₁₉₉₈g^-1 fat). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that OCDD and OCDF were responsible for 73% and 20% of the total data variance, respectively and they presented an independent behavior, probably as a result of distinct origins. The use of TEQ as weights in the PCA, revealed the importance of the penta-chloro congeners and it was possible to identify sample distribution patterns probably associated with the main PeCDD and PeCDF. The importance of local sources to PCDD/Fs concentrations is still to be evaluated and determined.

Activation Energy for Dibenzofuran Desorption from Fe3+/TiO2 and Ce3+/TiO2 Photocatalysts Coated onto Glass Fibres

In this work, TiO2, Fe3+/TiO2 and Ce3+/TiO2 photocatalytic films were respectively immobilized on glass fibres via the sol—gel technique to prepare supported photocatalysts. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments were conducted to measure the TPD curves for the removal of dibenzofuran from these photocatalysts, from which the activation energy for dibenzofuran desorption from the photocatalyst surfaces was estimated.

The results showed that the activation energies for dibenzofuran desorption from the photocatalysts TiO2, Ce3+/TiO2 and Fe3+/TiO2 coated separately onto the glass fibres were 16.41 kJ/mol, 22.55 kJ/mol and 33.59 kJ/mol, respectively, while the hardness values of the ions Fe3+, Ce3+ and Ti4+ were respectively 13.1 eV, 11.9 eV and 10.6 eV.

The data indicated that the use of Fe3+ or Ce3+ ions for doping a TiO2 photo-catalyst increased the local hardness of the doped TiO2 photocatalyst surface. This, in turn, increased the activation energy for the desorption of dibenzofuran from such a TiO2 photocatalyst surface.

Environmental variation of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in two tropical Andean Colombian cities using passive samplers

Passive air-sampling data of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) taken in Manizales (a medium-sized city) and Bogotá (a megacity), Colombia, were analyzed in order to identify potential sources of pollution and the possible influence of meteorological variables like temperature and precipitation. The results indicate important differences in levels of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs between Bogotá and Manizales, attributed to differences in site characteristics and potential local/regional sources. Higher PCDD/Fs concentrations were observed in Bogotá (373fg/m(3)) compared to those observed in Manizales, with mean levels ranging from 64fg/m(3) in a residential zone to 151fg/m(3) around a vehicular-influenced area. Higher dl-PCBs concentrations were observed in the industrial area of Manizales compared to those observed in Bogotá, with mean levels of 6668fg/m(3) and 4388fg/m(3) respectively. In terms of PCDD/Fs congener distribution, there was a predominance of octachlorodibenzodioxin (OCDD) followed by 1,2,3,4,6,7.8-heptachlorodibenzofuran (HpCDF) congeners, with both cities showing higher levels in zones of high vehicular activity. Industrial influence was most evident in dl-PCB levels. In comparison to the mean levels of dl-PCB congeners obtained in the vehicular zones of Bogotá and Manizales, the industrially influenced sampling stations showed higher concentrations of dl-PCB congeners. Passive sampling results suggested that congener concentration profiles are characteristic of their different emission sources, and can be used to distinguish between their industrial or vehicular origins.
