New insights in polydopamine formation via surface adsorption

Polydopamine coating for enhanced electrostatic adsorption of methylene blue by multiwalled carbon nanotubes in alkaline environments

The removal of dye molecules in alkaline environments is an issue that should receive increased attention. In this study, the interaction mechanism between polydopamine-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (P-MWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) in alkaline environments was explained in depth by adsorption, spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT). The mechanism of action and dominant forces between the adsorbent and adsorbate were analyzed graphically by introducing energy decomposition analysis (EDA) and an independent gradient model (IGM) into the DFT calculations. In addition, the force distribution was investigated through an isosurface. Moreover, batch adsorption studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs for MB removal in alkaline environments. The maximum MB adsorption capacities of the MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in solution were 113.3 mg‧g-1 and 230.4 mg‧g-1, respectively, at pH 9. The IGM and EDA showed that the better adsorption capacity of the P-MWCNTs originated from the enhancement of the electrostatic effect by the proton dissociation of polydopamine. Moreover, the adsorption of MB by MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in alkaline environments was governed by dispersion and electrostatic effects, respectively. Through this study, it is hoped that progress will be made in the use of DFT to explore the mechanism of adsorbent-adsorbate interactions.

3D-printed bone regeneration scaffolds modulate bone metabolic homeostasis through vascularization for osteoporotic bone defects

The treatment of osteoporotic bone defects poses a challenge due to the degradation of the skeletal vascular system and the disruption of local bone metabolism within the osteoporotic microenvironment. However, it is feasible to modulate the disrupted local bone metabolism imbalance through enhanced vascularization, a theory termed "vascularization-bone metabolic balance". This study developed a 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold modified with EPLQLKM and SVVYGLR peptides (PCL-SE). The EPLQLKM peptide attracts bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), while the SVVYGLR peptide enhances endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) vascular differentiation, thus regulating bone metabolism and fostering bone regeneration through the paracrine effects of EPCs. Further mechanistic research demonstrated that PCL-SE promoted the vascularization of EPCs, activating the Notch signaling pathway in BMSCs, leading to the upregulation of osteogenesis-related genes and the downregulation of osteoclast-related genes, thereby restoring bone metabolic balance. Furthermore, PCL-SE facilitated the differentiation of EPCs into "H"-type vessels and the recruitment of BMSCs to synergistically enhance osteogenesis, resulting in the regeneration of normal microvessels and bone tissues in cases of femoral condylar bone defects in osteoporotic SD rats. This study suggests that PCL-SE supports in-situ vascularization, remodels bone metabolic translational balance, and offers a promising therapeutic regimen for osteoporotic bone defects.

Highly sensitive antibiotic sensing based on optical weak value amplification: A case study of chloramphenicol

The public health concern of antibiotic residues in animal-origin food has been a long-standing issue. In this work, we present a novel method for antibiotic detection, leveraging optical weak value amplification and harnessing an indirect competitive inhibition assay, which significantly boosts the system's sensitivity in identifying small molecule antibiotics. We chose chloramphenicol as a model compound and mixed it with chloramphenicol-bovine serum albumin conjugates to bind to the chloramphenicol antibody competitively. We achieved a broad linear detection range of up to 3.24 ng/mL and a high concentration resolution of 33.20 pg/mL. To further validate the universality of our proposed detection methodology, we successfully applied it to testing gibberellin and tetracycline. Moreover, we conducted regeneration experiments and real-sample correlation studies. This study introduces a novel strategy for the label-free optical sensing of small molecule antibiotics, greatly expanding the range of applications for sensors utilizing optical weak value amplification.

Composite superplastic aerogel scaffolds containing dopamine and bioactive glass-based fibers for skin and bone tissue regeneration

Multifunctional bioactive biomaterials with integrated bone and soft tissue regenerability hold great promise for the regeneration of trauma-affected skin and bone defects. The aim of this research was to fabricate aerogel scaffolds (GD-BF) by blending the appropriate proportions of short bioactive glass fiber (BGF), gelatin (Gel), and dopamine (DA). Electrospun polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-BGF fibers were converted into short BGF through calcination and homogenization. Microporous GD-BF scaffolds displayed good elastic deformation recovery and promoted neo-tissue formation. The DA could enable thermal crosslinking and enhance the mechanical properties and structural stability of the GD-BF scaffolds. The BGF-mediated release of therapeutic ions shorten hemostatic time (<30 s) in a rat tail amputation model and a rabbit artery injury model alongside inducing the regeneration of skin appendages (e.g., blood vessels, glands, etc.) in a full-thickness excisional defect model in rats (percentage wound closure: GD-BF2, 98 % vs. control group, 83 %) at day 14 in vitro. Taken together, these aerogel scaffolds may have significant promise for soft and hard tissue repair, which may also be worthy for the other related disciplines.

Sequentially photocatalytic degradation of mussel-inspired polydopamine: From nanoscale disassembly to effective mineralization

Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coating has been utilized extensively as versatile deposition strategies that can functionalize surfaces of virtually all substrates. However, the strong adhesion, stability and intermolecular interaction of PDA make it inefficient in certain applications. Herein, a green and efficient photocatalytic method was reported to remove adhesion and degrade PDA by using TiO2-H2O2 as photocatalyst. The photodegradation process of the PDA spheres was first undergone nanoscale disassembly to form soluble PDA oligomers or well-dispersed nanoparticles. Most of the disassembled PDA can be photodegraded and finally mineralized to CO2 and H2O. Various PDA coated templates and PDA hollow structures can be photodegraded by this strategy. Such process provides a practical strategy for constructing the patterned and gradient surfaces by the "top-down" method under the control of light scope and intensity. This sequential degradation strategy is beneficial to achieve the decomposition of highly crosslinked polymers.

Covalent bonding coating of quantum-sized TiO2 with polydopamine on catheter surface for synergistically enhanced antimicrobial and anticoagulant performances

The catheters coating can be effective in reducing bloodstream infection and thrombosis, which are the major complications in blood contact catheters. However, the surface functional coating is difficult to be implemented due to the high surface stretching force from the minor-caliber. In this work, we propose a covalent bonding coating of polydopamine/titanium dioxide quantum dots (PDA/TiO2 QDs) on polyurethane (PU) catheters, which can fulfill a dual-function of antibacterial and antithrombosis. The PDA/TiO2 QDs layer was prepared by dip-coating, where the intermediate transition layer of PDA was reacted with the internal hydroxyls of PU surface by pre-oxidation and bonds with the external TiO2 QDs coating. The surface microstructures are analyzed by SEM, TEM and XPS methods, and the antimicrobial and anticoagulant performances are investigated by bacterial plate count and platelet adhesion tests. The oxidizing and hydrophilic effect of the top layer of TiO2 QDs were enhanced by the QD-sized particles. The antibacterial activities of the PDA/TiO2 QDs coating on PU catheters against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), especially to S. aureus, are evidenced by bacterial plate count test, reaching good bactericidal rates of 49.9 % against E. coli and 83.7 % against S. aureus, respectively. Platelet adhesion test and whole blood dynamic circulation modeling demonstrate that the PDA/TiO2 QDs coating effectively inhibits platelet adhesion due to an excellent hydrophilicity of TiO2 QDs surface, and thereafter reduce thrombus formation.

Heterogenous Copper(0)-Assisted Dopamine Oxidation: A New Pathway to Controllable and Scalable Polydopamine Synthesis

In this study, we introduce an approach for synthesizing polydopamine (PDA) through the controlled oxidation of dopamine using metallic copper. Traditional methods of PDA synthesis often encounter challenges such as scalability, reproducibility, and control over polymerization. Our approach utilizes the catalytic properties of metallic copper in the presence of dissolved oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) without additional chemicals. This process allows for precise control over dopamine oxidation, leading to reliable, materials and cost-effective upscalable PDA production. We investigated the reaction kinetics and the role of copper and ROS in dopamine oxidation, using several different experimental techniques. Our results demonstrate that, even at low pH, the copper-assisted method produces PDA with properties comparable to those synthesized through conventional means. We propose a mechanism for PDA synthesis that is initiated by oxygen adsorption onto copper surface, leading to the generation of various ROS which act as oxidizing agents in PDA synthesis. This method presents an advancement in the scalable and controlled production of PDA, with potential applications in various scientific and industrial fields.

Ultrasound-triggered piezoelectric polyetheretherketone with boosted osteogenesis via regulating Akt/GSK3β/β-catenin pathway

Maxillofacial bone defects can severely impact quality of life by impairing physiological functions such as chewing, breathing, swallowing, and pronunciation. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is commonly used for the repair of maxillofacial defects due to its mechanical adaptability, while its osteogenic properties still need refinement. Herein, we have utilized the piezoelectric effect exhibited by barium titanate (BTO) under low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) to develop an ultrasound responsive PEEK (PDA@BTO-SPEEK, PBSP) through the mediating effect of polydopamine (PDA), for repairing maxillofacial bone defects. After modification by PDA@BTO, PBSP possesses better hydrophilicity, which is conducive to cell growth and adhesion. Simultaneously, by virtue of the piezoelectric characteristics of BTO, PBSP obtains a piezoelectric coefficient that matches the bone cortex. Notably, when PBSP is stimulated by LIPUS, it can generate stable electricity and effectively accelerate the osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts through the regulation of the Piezo1-induced calcium (Ca2+) influx and Akt/GSK3β/β-catenin pathway. In addition, PBSP presents satisfactory therapeutic effects in rat skull defect models, and its osteogenic efficiency can be further improved under LIPUS stimulation with high tissue penetration. Collectively, PBSP + LIPUS exhibits great potential as a promising alternative strategy for the repair of maxillofacial bone defects.

The synthesis of polydopamine nano- and microspheres in microdroplets

Here we developed a microdroplet-based strategy for the rapid synthesis of uniform polydopamine nano- and microspheres. Polydopamine spheres with controllable sizes were generated within hundreds of microseconds by simply spraying water solutions of dopamine into microdroplets. Mass spectrometry revealed that dopamine was primarily oxidized into aminochrome, acting as the major building block for polydopamine. We anticipate that microdroplet chemistry will be rich in opportunities for the synthesis of functional nano- and micromaterials.

Mussel-inspired adhesive drug-loaded hydrogels for oral ulcers treatment

Oral aphthous ulcers are common mucosal lesions that cause pain and discomfort. There are diverse biomaterials and drug treatments for oral ulcers used in both research and clinical settings. However, the complex oral environment often results in low adhesion and short drug retention times, which lead to poor drug availability and treatment outcomes. In this study, a mussel-inspired adhesive hydrogel was developed by grafting catechol onto hyaluronic acid (C-HA), and dopamine was added for oxidative pre-polymerization to form modified hyaluronic acid (M-HA), which remarkably increased the adhesion of the hydrogels. Then, M-HA was interpenetrated into the gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) network. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) was then incorporated into the hydrogel to enhance its availability and therapeutic effect through its sustained-release capability. The GelMA/M-HA hydrogel demonstrated strong adhesion to wet tissues, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and good biocompatibility. In both rat oral ulcers and infected wounds, the adhesive hydrogel significantly accelerated the healing of the ulcers and infected wounds. These results indicated that this adhesive hydrogel offers a promising new strategy for the treatment of oral ulcers in clinical practice. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Oral ulcers are a common and high-incidence mucosal condition that seriously affect people's daily lives, often making it difficult for patients to chew and speak. However, a dynamic oral environment with various types of bacteria influences drug availability and treatment effects in clinical settings. To address this challenge, an adhesive, mussel-inspired, drug-loaded hydrogel was constructed using natural macromolecules (hyaluronic acid and gelatin) with good biocompatibility. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), with its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, has been incorporated to synergistically promote oral ulcer healing. The splendid adhesion, antibacterial, and therapeutic effects of this hydrogel demonstrated a new strategy for treating oral ulcers.

Polydopamine-Based Biomaterials in Orthopedic Therapeutics: Properties, Applications, and Future Perspectives

Polydopamine is a versatile and modifiable polymer, known for its excellent biocompatibility and adhesiveness. It can also be engineered into a variety of nanoparticles and biomaterials for drug delivery, functional modification, making it an excellent choice to enhance the prevention and treatment of orthopedic diseases. Currently, the application of polydopamine biomaterials in orthopedic disease prevention and treatment is in its early stages, despite some initial achievements. This article aims to review these applications to encourage further development of polydopamine for orthopedic therapeutic needs. We detail the properties of polydopamine and its biomaterial types, highlighting its superior performance in functional modification on nanoparticles and materials. Additionally, we also explore the challenges and future prospects in developing optimal polydopamine biomaterials for clinical use in orthopedic disease prevention and treatment.

Fe-doped biodegradable dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles for starvation therapy and photothermal-enhanced cascade catalysis in tumor therapy

Combination therapies have attracted significant attention because they address the limitations of monotherapy while improving overall efficacy. In this study, we designed a novel nanoplatform, named GOx@Fe-DMSN@PDA (GFDP), by integrating Fe2+ into dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSN) and selecting glucose oxidase (GOx) as the model drug loaded into the DMSN pores. Additionally, we coated the surface of the DMSN with polydopamine (PDA) to confer pH/near infrared (NIR) light-responsive controlled-release behavior and photothermal therapy (PTT). The introduction of Fe2+ into the DMSN framework greatly improved biodegradability and enhanced the peroxidase (POD)-like activity of GFDP. In addition, GOx could consume glucose and generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) within tumor cells to facilitate starvation therapy and enhance cascade catalysis. The PDA coating provided the DMSN with an intelligent response release ability, promoting efficient photothermal conversion and achieving the PTT effect. Cellular tests showed that under NIR light irradiation, GFDP exhibited a synergistic effect of PTT-enhanced starvation therapy and cascade catalysis, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 2.89 μg/mL, which was significantly lower than that of GFDP without NIR light irradiation (18.29 μg/mL). The in vivo anti-tumor effect indicated that GFDP could effectively accumulate at the tumor site for thermal imaging and showed remarkable synergistic therapeutic effects. In summary, GFDP is a promising nanoplatform for multi-modal combination therapy that integrates starvation therapy, PTT, and cascade catalysis.

MXene-Polydopamine-antiCEACAM1 Antibody Complex as a Strategy for Targeted Ablation of Melanoma

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a method for eradicating tumor tissues through the use of photothermal materials and photosensitizing agents that absorb light energy from laser sources and convert it into heat, which selectively targets and destroys cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. MXenes have been intensively investigated as photosensitizing agents for PTT. However, achieving the selectivity of MXenes to the tumor cells remains a challenge. Specific antibodies (Ab) against tumor antigens can achieve homing of the photosensitizing agents toward tumor cells, but their immobilization on MXene received little attention. Here, we offer a strategy for the selective ablation of melanoma cells using MXene-polydopamine-antiCEACAM1 Ab complexes. We coated Ti3C2Tx MXene with polydopamine (PDA), a natural compound that attaches Ab to the MXene surface, followed by conjugation with an anti-CEACAM1 Ab. Our experiments confirm the biocompatibility of the Ti3C2Tx-PDA and Ti3C2Tx-PDA-antiCEACAM1 Ab complexes across various cell types. We also established a protocol for the selective ablation of CEACAM1-positive melanoma cells using near-infrared irradiation. The obtained complexes exhibit high selectivity and efficiency in targeting and eliminating CEACAM1-positive melanoma cells while sparing CEACAM1-negative cells. These results demonstrate the potential of MXene-PDA-Ab complexes for cancer therapy. They underline the critical role of targeted therapies in oncology, offering a promising avenue for the precise and safe treatment of melanoma and possibly other cancers characterized by specific biomarkers. Future research will aim to refine these complexes for clinical use, paving the way for new strategies for cancer treatment.

Polydopamine-assisted smart bacteria-responsive hydrogel: Switchable antimicrobial and antifouling capabilities for accelerated wound healing

INTRODUCTION

Wound infections and formation of biofilms caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria have constituted a series of wound deteriorated and life-threatening problems. The in situ resisting bacterial adhesion, killing multidrug-resistance bacteria, and releasing dead bacteria is strongly required to supply a gap of existing sterilization strategies.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to present a facile approach to construct a bacteria-responsive hydrogel with switchable antimicrobial-antifouling properties through a "resisting-killing-releasing" method.

METHODS

The smart bacteria-responsive hydrogel was constructed by two-step immersion strategy: a simple immersion-coating process to construct Polydopamine (pDA) coatings on the surface of a gelatin-chitosan composite hydrogel and followed by grafting of bactericidal quaternary ammonium chitosan (QCS) as well as pH-responsive PMAA to this pDA coating. The in vitro antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility and the in vivo wound healing effects in a mouse MRSA-infected full-thickness defect model of the hydrogel were further evaluated.

RESULTS

Assisted by polydopamine coating, the pH-responsive PMAA and bactericidal QCS are successfully grafted onto a gelatin-chitosan composite hydrogel surface and hydrogels maintain the adequate mechanical properties. At physiological conditions, the PMAA hydration layer endows the hydrogel with resistance to initial bacterial attachment. Once bacteria colonize and acidize local environment, the swelling PMAA chains tend to collapse then expose the bactericidal QCS, realizing the on-demand kill bacteria. Moreover, the dead bacteria can be released and the hydrogel will resume the resistance due to hydrophilicity of PMAA at increased pH, endowing the surface renewable ability. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate the favorable biocompatibility and wound healing capacity of hydrogels that can inhibit infection and further facilitate granulation tissue, angiogenesis, and collagen synthesis.

CONCLUSION

This strategy provides a novel methodology for the development and design of smart wound dressing to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria infections.

Polydopamine Nanoparticle-Based Combined Chemotherapy and Photothermal Therapy for the Treatment of Liver Cancer

Polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) are proposed as an anti-cancer tool against hepatocellular carcinoma through the combination of near-infrared (NIR)-mediated hyperthermia and loading with a chemotherapeutic drug, sorafenib (SRF). Cell membranes isolated from a liver cancer cell line (HepG2) have been exploited for the coating of the nanoparticles (thus obtaining CM-SRF-PDA NPs), to promote homotypic targeting toward cancer cells. The selective targeting ability and the combined photothermal and chemotherapeutic activity of the CM-SRF-PDA NPs following NIR irradiation have been evaluated on cell cultures in static and dynamic conditions, besides three-dimensional culture models. Eventually, the therapeutic effectiveness of the proposed approach has also been tested ex ovo on HepG2 spheroid-grafted quail embryos. This comprehensive investigation, supported by proteomic analysis, showed the effectiveness of the proposed nanoplatform and strongly suggests further pre-clinical testing in the treatment of liver cancer.

One-dimensional magnetic chains for methylene blue removal

Adsorption is a promising method for the treatment of wastewater from the dyestuff industry due to its simplicity, high efficiency, low energy consumption and no secondary pollution. The capacity to separate adsorbents in a timely and efficient manner is a crucial factor in industrial applications. One-dimensional magnetic chains modified with polydopamine and in situ generated Ag nanoparticles (MC@PDA-Ag) were fabricated as highly regenerable adsorbents for methylene blue (MB). The magnetic chains were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and magnetometry. The adsorption and catalytic degradation of MB by the materials were investigated. The regeneration capacity of MC@PDA-Ag was also evaluated. The specific saturation magnetization of MC@PDA-Ag is 38.2 emu g-1. The adsorption capacity of MC@PDA-Ag remained 76% of the initial value after 12 cycles of adsorption and elution. The novel adsorbents, which integrate adsorption and catalytic degradation, are anticipated to facilitate the development of magnetic adsorption materials for the remediation of dye pollution.

Enhancing the strength and toughness of polylactic acid-based composites through one-step co-deposition of active coating onto wood fiber

A facial strategy of co-deposition is proposed to enhance the interfacial bonding in wood fiber (WF)/polylactic acid (PLA) composites. Dopamine or tannic acid (TA) was co-deposited with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) onto the WF surface to create active coatings. These coatings were formed through Michael addition and Schiff base reactions and effectively attached to the WF through a combination of hydrogen and covalent bonding. Such active coatings facilitated the connection between WF and PLA through both covalent bonds and physical entanglements, thereby enhancing the interfacial interactions and compatibility between the two components. The co-deposition of TA with APTES was found to be more effective than with dopamine, leading to a dramatic improvement in the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites by 33.4 % and 185.9 %, respectively. This work offers a facile method to prepare high performance plant fiber reinforced PLA composites, thereby broadening the potential applications of PLA.

Surface bioactivation of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) by magnesium chondroitin sulfate (MgCS) as orthopedic implants for reconstruction of skeletal defects

Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is clinically used as a bio-implant for the healing of skeletal defects. However, the osseointegration of clinical-sized bone grafts remains limited. In this study, surface-porous PEEK was created by using a sulfonation method and a metal-polysaccharide complex MgCS was introduced on the surface of sulfonated PEEK to form MgCS@SPEEK. The as-prepared MgCS@SPEEK was found to have a porous surface with good hydrophilicity and bioactivity. This was followed by an investigation into whether MgCS loaded onto sulfonated PEEK surfaces could promote osseointegration and angiogenesis. The in vitro results showed that MgCS@SPEEK had a positive effect on reducing the expression levels of inflammatory genes and promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis-related genes expression levels. Furthermore, porous MgCS@SPEEK was implanted in critical-sized rat tibial defects for in vivo evaluation of osseointegration. The micro-computed tomography evaluation results revealed substantial bone formation at 4 and 8 weeks. Collectively, these findings indicate that MgCS@SPEEK could provide improved osseointegration and an attractive strategy for orthopaedic applications.

Stimuli-Responsive Ion Transport Regulation in Nanochannels by Adhesion-Induced Functionalization of Macroscopic Outer Surface

Responsive regulation of ion transport through nanochannels is crucial in the design of smart nanofluidic devices for sequencing, sensing, and water-energy nexus. Functionalization of the inner wall of the nanochannel enhances interaction with ions and fluid but restricts versatile chemical approaches and accurate characterizations of fluidic interfaces. Herein, we reveal a responsive regulating mechanism of ion transport through nanochannels by polydopamine (PDA)-induced functionalization on the macroscopic outer surface of nanochannels. Responsive molecules were codeposited with PDA on the outer surface of nanochannels and formed a valve of nanometer thickness to manually manipulate ion transport by changing its gap spacing, surface charge, and wettability under external stimulus. The response ratio can be up to 100-fold by maximizing the proportion of responsive molecules on the outer surface. Laminating the codepositions of different responsive molecules with PDA on the channel's outer surface produces multiple responses. A nearly universal adhesion of PDA with responsive molecules on the open outer surface induces nanochannels responsive to different external stimuli with variable response ratios and arbitrary combinations. The results challenge the primary role of functionalization on the nanoconfined interface of nanofluidics and open opportunities for developing new-style nanofluidic devices through the functionalization of macroscopic interface.

DNA aptamer-functionalized PDA nanoparticles: from colloidal chemistry to biosensor applications

Polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) are widely utilized in the field of biomedical science for surface functionalization because of their unique characteristics, such as simple and low-cost preparation methods, good adhesive properties, and ability to incorporate amine and oxygen-rich chemical groups. However, challenges in the application of PDA NPs as surface coatings on electrode surfaces and in conjugation with biomolecules for electrochemical sensors still exist. In this work, we aimed to develop an electrochemical interface based on PDA NPs conjugated with a DNA aptamer for the detection of glycated albumin (GA) and to study DNA aptamers on the surfaces of PDA NPs to understand the aptamer-PDA surface interactions using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. PDA NPs were synthesized by the oxidation of dopamine in Tris buffer at pH 10.5, conjugated with DNA aptamers specific to GA at different concentrations (0.05, 0.5, and 5 μM), and deposited on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). The charge transfer resistance of the PDA NP-coated SPCEs decreased, indicating that the PDA NP composite is a conductive bioorganic material. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the PDA NPs were spherical, and dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy data indicated the successful conjugation of the aptamers on the PDA NPs. The as-prepared electrochemical interface was employed for the detection of GA. The detection limit was 0.17 μg/mL. For MD simulation, anti-GA aptamer through the 5'terminal end in a single-stranded DNA-aptamer structure and NH2 linker showed a stable structure with its axis perpendicular to the PDA surface. These findings provide insights into improved biosensor design and have demonstrated the potential for employing electrochemical PDA NP interfaces in point-of-care applications.

Ion and Molecular Sieving With Ultrathin Polydopamine Nanomembranes

In contrast to biological cell membranes, it is still a major challenge for synthetic membranes to efficiently separate ions and small molecules due to their similar sizes in the sub-nanometer range. Inspired by biological ion channels with their unique channel wall chemistry that facilitates ion sieving by ion-channel interactions, the first free-standing, ultrathin (10-17 nm) nanomembranes composed entirely of polydopamine (PDA) are reported here as ion and molecular sieves. These nanomembranes are obtained via an easily scalable electropolymerization strategy and provide nanochannels with various amine and phenolic hydroxyl groups that offer a favorable chemical environment for ion-channel electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions. They exhibit remarkable selectivity for monovalent ions over multivalent ions and larger species with K+/Mg2+ of ≈4.2, K+/[Fe(CN)6]3- of ≈10.3, and K+/Rhodamine B of ≈273.0 in a pressure-driven process, as well as cyclic reversible pH-responsive gating properties. Infrared spectra reveal hydrogen bond formation between hydrated multivalent ions and PDA, which prevents the transport of multivalent ions and facilitates high selectivity. Chemically rich, free-standing, and pH-responsive PDA nanomembranes with specific interaction sites are proposed as customizable high-performance sieves for a wide range of challenging separation requirements.

Polydopamine-Mediated Metal-Organic Frameworks Modification for Improved Biocompatibility

Engineered nanomaterials are promising in biomedical application. However, insufficient understanding of their biocompatibility at the cellular and organic levels prevents their widely biomedical applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polydopamine (PDA)-modified ZIF-8 are chosen as model nanomaterials due to its emergent role in nanomedicine. In vitro, the results demonstrate that the PDA coating greatly alleviates the cytotoxicity of ZIF-8 to RAW264.7, LO2, and HST6, which represent three different cell types in liver organs. Mechanistically, ZIF-8 entering into the cells can greatly induce the reactive oxygen species generation, which subsequently induces cell cycle delay and autophagy, ultimately leads to enhanced cytotoxicity. Further, human umbilical vein endothelial cells model and zebrafish embryos assay also confirm that PDA can compromise the ZIF-8 toxicity significantly. This study reveals that PDA-coated MOFs nanomaterials show great potential in nano-based drug delivery systems .

Grooved Microneedle Patch Augments Adoptive T Cell Therapy Against Solid Tumors via Diverting Regulatory T Cells

The efficacy of adoptive T cell therapy (ACT) for the treatment of solid tumors remains challenging. In addition to the poor infiltration of effector T (Teff) cells limited by the physical barrier surrounding the solid tumor, another major obstacle is the extensive infiltration of regulatory T (Treg) cells, a major immunosuppressive immune cell subset, in the tumor microenvironment. Here, this work develops a grooved microneedle patch for augmenting ACT, aiming to simultaneously overcome physical and immunosuppressive barriers. The microneedles are engineered through an ice-templated method to generate the grooved structure for sufficient T-cell loading. In addition, with the surface modification of chemokine CCL22, the MNs could not only directly deliver tumor-specific T cells into solid tumors through physical penetration, but also specifically divert Treg cells from the tumor microenvironment to the surface of the microneedles via a cytokine concentration gradient, leading to an increase in the ratio of Teff cells/Treg cells in a mouse melanoma model. Consequently, this local delivery strategy of both T cell receptor T cells and chimeric antigen receptor T cells via the CCL22-modified grooved microneedles as a local niche could significantly enhance the antitumor efficacy and reduce the on-target off-tumor toxicity of ACT.

Polydopamine Adhesion: Catechol, Amine, Dihydroxyindole, and Aggregation Dynamics

While polydopamine (PDA) possesses the surface-independent adhesion property of mussel-binding proteins, significant differences exist between them. Particularly, PDA's short and rigid backbone differs from the long and flexible protein sequence of mussel-binding proteins. Given that adhesion relies on achieving a conformal contact with large surface coverage, PDA has drawbacks as an adhesive. In our study, we investigated the roles of each building block of PDA to build a better understanding of their binding mechanisms. Initially, we anticipated that catecholamine oligomers form specific binding with substrates. However, our study showed that the universal adhesion of PDA is initiated by the solubility limit of growing oligomers by forming agglomerates, complemented by multiple binding modes of catechol. Notably, in the absence of amines, poly(catechol) either remained in solution or formed minor suspensions without any surface coating, underscoring the essential role of amines in the adhesion process by facilitating insoluble aggregate formation. To substantiate our findings, we induced poly(catechol) aggregation using quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (qPVP), leading to subsequent surface adhesion upon agglomerate formation.

Polydopamine-Modified Liposomes: Preparation and Recent Applications in the Biomedical Field

Polydopamine (PDA) is a bioinspired polymer that has unique and desirable properties for emerging applications in the biomedical field, such as extraordinary adhesiveness, extreme ease of functionalization, great biocompatibility, large drug loading capacity, good mucopenetrability, strong photothermal capacity, and pH-responsive behavior. Liposomes are consolidated and attractive biomimetic nanocarriers widely used in the field of drug delivery for their biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as for their ability to encapsulate hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and amphiphilic compounds, even simultaneously. In addition, liposomes can be decorated with appropriate functionalities for targeted delivery purposes. Thus, combining the interesting properties of PDA with those of liposomes allows us to obtain multifunctional nanocarriers with enhanced stability, biocompatibility, and functionality. In this review, a focus on the most recent developments of liposomes modified with PDA, either in the form of polymer layers trapping multiple vesicles or in the form of PDA-coated nanovesicles, is proposed. These innovative PDA coatings extend the application range of liposomes into the field of biomedical applications, thereby allowing for easier functionalization with targeting ligands, which endows them with active release capabilities and photothermal activity and generally improves their interaction with biological fluids. Therefore, hybrid liposome/PDA systems are proposed for surface-mediated drug delivery and for the development of nanocarriers intended for systemic and oral drug delivery, as well as for multifunctional nanocarriers for cancer therapy. The main synthetic strategies for the preparation of PDA-modified liposomes are also illustrated. Finally, future prospects for PDA-coated liposomes are discussed, including the suggestion of potential new applications, deeper evaluation of side effects, and better personalization of medical treatments.

Preparation of Polydopamine Functionalized HNIW Crystals and Application in Solid Propellants

The application of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) as an oxidizer in solid propellants aligns with the pursuit of high-energy materials. However, the phase transformation behavior and high impact sensitivity of HNIW are its limitations. Due to the strong adhesion and mild synthesis conditions, polydopamine (PDA) has been employed to modify HNIW. However, the method suffers from a slow coating process and a non-ideal coating effect under short reaction time. Herein, oxygen-accelerated dopamine in situ polymerization coating method was developed. It was found that oxygen not only reduced the coating time but also contributed to forming a dense and uniform PDA layer. HNIW@PDA coated in oxygen for 6 h exhibited the most favorable performance, with a delay of 20.8 °C in the phase transition temperature and a reduction of 145.45% in the impact sensitivity. The -OH groups on the surface of PDA enhanced the interaction between HNIW and polymer binders, resulting in a 20.36% reduction in the dewetting percentage. The lower content of PDA in HNIW@PDA (1.17%) resulted in minimal variation in the heat of explosion for HNIW@PDA-based HTPB propellant (6287 kJ/kg) in comparison to HNIW-based HTPB propellant (6297 kJ/kg). Hence, HNIW@PDA-based propellants are expected to offer an alternative with promising safety and mechanical performance compared to existing HNIW-based propellants, thus facilitating the application of HNIW in high-energy propellants. This work presents a low-cost method for efficiently inhibiting the phase transformation of polycrystalline explosives and reducing the impact sensitivity. It also offers a potential approach to enhance the interfacial interaction between nitro-containing explosives and polymer binders.

Dipole-Dipole Tuned Electronic Reconfiguration of Defective Carbon Sites for Efficient Oxygen Reduction into H2O2

Metal-free carbon-based materials are one of the most promising electrocatalysts toward 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) for on-site production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which however suffer from uncontrollable carbonizations and inferior 2e-ORR selectivity. To this end, a polydopamine (PDA)-modified carbon catalyst with a dipole-dipole enhancement is developed via a calcination-free method. The H2O2 yield rate outstandingly reaches 1.8 mol gcat -1 h-1 with high faradaic efficiency of above 95% under a wide potential range of 0.4-0.7 VRHE, overwhelming most of carbon electrocatalysts. Meanwhile, within a lab-made flow cell, the synthesized ORR electrode features an exceptional stability for over 250 h, achieved a pure H2O2 production efficacy of 306 g kWh-1. By virtue of its industrial-level capabilities, the established flow cell manages to perform a rapid pulp bleaching within 30 min. The superior performance and enhanced selectivity of 2e-ORR is experimentally revealed and attributed to the electronic reconfiguration on defective carbon sites induced by non-covalent dipole-dipole influence between PDA and carbon, thereby prohibiting the cleavage of O-O in OOH intermediates. This proposed strategy of dipole-dipole effects is universally applicable over 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D graphene, providing a practical route to design 2e-ORR catalysts.

A Novel Multiarmed Bifunctional PEG Derivative for the Preparation of Mass Spectrometry Ion Sources with Antifouling Property and High Selectivity

It is challenging to prepare a highly selective mass spectrometry (MS) ion source for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of analytes, especially mycotoxins. In this study, an amino and tetrazine bifunctionalized multiarm PEG derivative (NH2HCl-4armPEG10K-(MTz)3), which can be easily immobilized on the substrate by the addition reaction between amino and polydopamine, was used for the preparation of MS ionization substrate. NH2HCl-4armPEG10K-(MTz)3 can also be used as a linker to immobilize sufficient streptavidin (SA) on the surface of the substrate by a click reaction. The process further promotes the immobilization of broad-spectrum antibodies (3D4), which were used as the recognition element for ZEN and its metabolites. The prepared SSS-Au-PDA-4armPEG10K-SA-3D4 not only can rapidly enrich ZEN and its metabolites with high selectivity but also shows good antifouling properties in the matrix. After simple sample preparation, the prepared SSS-Au-PDA-4armPEG10K-SA-3D4 can be directly coupled with MS to achieve high sensitivity (LODs: 0.18-0.66 ng/mL, LOQs: 0.5-1.0 ng/mL) and selective detection of ZEN and its metabolites in the matrix. At the same time, satisfactory recoveries (83.60-97.80%) and precision (RSD: 2.80-9.10%) can also be obtained. The prepared SSS-Au-PDA-4armPEG10K-SA-3D4 is expected to provide a powerful tool for the rapid and highly sensitive determination of multiple targets by MS.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting using carbon cloth functionalized with ZnO nanostructures via polydopamine assisted electroless deposition

ZnO nanorods (ZnO-nr) have been widely studied as a promising nanomaterial for photoelectrochemical water splitting. However, almost all prior studies employed planar electrodes. Here, we investigated the performance of ZnO nanorods on a fibrous carbon cloth (CC) electrode, which offers a larger surface area for functionalization of photocatalysts. ZnO nanorods and Ni nanofilm were deposited on carbon cloth substrates for investigation as the photoanode and cathode of a photoelectrochemical water splitting setup, respectively. The use of polydopamine in the electroless deposition of ZnO ensured a uniform distribution of nanorods that were strongly adherent to the microfiber surface of the carbon cloth. Compared to ZnO nanorods grown on planar ITO/glass substrates, the CC-based ZnO photoanodes exhibited smaller onset potentials (1.1 VRHEvs. 1.8 VRHE), ∼40× larger dark faradaic currents at 1.23 VRHE and 5.5×-9× improvement in photoconversion efficiencies. Ni/CC cathodes were also found to exhibit a lower overpotential@10 mA cm-2 than Ni/Cu by 90 mV. The photocurrent obtained from the ZnO-nr/CC anode was highly stable across an hour and the peak current decreased by only 5% across 5 cycles of illumination, compared to 72% for the planar ZnO-nr/ITO anode. However, the response of the CC-based setups to changes in the illumination conditions was slower, taking hundreds of seconds to reach peak photocurrent, compared to tens of seconds for the planar electrodes. Using cyclic voltammetry, the double-layer capacitance of the electrodes was measured, and it was shown that the increased efficiency of the ZnO-nr/CC anode was due to a 2 order of magnitude increase in electrochemically active sites provided by the copious microfiber surface of the carbon cloth.

Tuning the Chemical and Electrochemical Properties of Paper-Based Carbon Electrodes by Pyrolysis of Polydopamine

Electrochemical paper-based analytical devices represent an important platform for portable, low-cost, affordable, and decentralized diagnostics. For this kind of application, chemical functionalization plays a pivotal role to ensure high clinical performance by tuning surface properties and the area of electrodes. However, controlling different surface properties of electrodes by using a single functionalization route is still challenging. In this work, we attempted to tune the wettability, chemical composition, and electroactive area of carbon-paper-based devices by thermally treating polydopamine (PDA) at different temperatures. PDA films were deposited onto pyrolyzed paper (PP) electrodes and thermally treated in the range of 300-1000 °C. After deposition of PDA, the surface is rich in nitrogen and oxygen, it is superhydrophilic, and it has a high electroactive area. As the temperature increases, the surface becomes hydrophobic, and the electroactive area decreases. The surface modifications were followed by Raman, X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), electrical measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical experiments. In addition, the chemical composition of nitrogen species can be tuned on the surface. As a proof of concept, we employed PDA-treated surfaces to anchor [AuCl4]- ions. After electrochemical reduction, we observed that it is possible to control the size of the nanoparticles on the surface. Our route opens a new avenue to add versatility to electrochemical interfaces in the field of paper-based electrochemical biosensors.

Linker-Preserved Iron Metal-Organic Framework-Based Lateral Flow Assay for Sensitive Transglutaminase 2 Detection in Urine Through Machine Learning-Assisted Colorimetric Analysis

A groundbreaking demonstration of the utilization of the metal-organic framework MIL-101(Fe) as an exceptionally perceptive visual label in colorimetric lateral flow assays (LFA) is described. This pioneering approach enables the precise identification of transglutaminase 2 (TGM2), a recognized biomarker for chronic kidney disease (CKD), in urine specimens, which offers a remarkably sensitive naked-eye detection mechanism. The surface of MIL-101(Fe) was modified with oxalyl chloride, adipoyl chloride, and poly(acrylic) acid (PAA); these not only improved the labeling material stability in a complex matrix but also achieved a systematic control in the detection limit of the TGM2 concentration using our LFA platform. The advanced LFA with the MIL-101(Fe)-PAA label can detect TGM2 concentrations down to 0.012, 0.009, and 0.010 nM in Tris-HCl buffer, urine, and desalted urine, respectively, which are approximately 55-fold lower than those for a conventional AuNP-based LFAs. Aside from rapid TGM2 detection (i.e., within 20 min), the performance of the MIL-101(Fe)-PAA-based LFA on reproducibility [coefficients of variation (CV) < 2.9%] and recovery (95.9-103.2%) along with storage stability within 25 days of observation (CV < 6.0%) shows an acceptable parameter range for quantitative analysis. A sophisticated sensing method grounded in machine learning principles was also developed, specifically aimed at precisely deducing the TGM2 concentration by analyzing immunoreaction sites. More importantly, our developed LFA offers potential for clinical measurement of TGM2 concentration in normal human urine and CKD patients' samples.

Surface Bioengineering of Mo2Ga2C MAX Phase to Develop Blended Loose Nanofiltration Membranes for Textile Wastewater Treatment

The potential of blended loose nanofiltration membranes (LNMs) to fractionate dyes and inorganic salts in textile wastewater has become a focus of attention in recent years. In this research work, we fabricated LNMs based on polysulfone (PSf) membranes blended with l-histidine amino acid-functionalized Mo2Ga2C MAX phase (His-MAX). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), contact angle, ζ-potential, porosity, and pore size analyses were employed to characterize the LNMs. Blending 0.75 wt % of His-MAX additive with the PSf tailored the LNM's features by making it more water-friendly, increasing its porosity, enlarging its pores, and making its surface smoother. The pure water flux of 127.6 L/m2 h was achieved by LNM containing 0.75 wt % His-MAX, which was 2.5 times greater than the bare one. The mentioned LNM displayed a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 68.27 and 98.57, 98.31, and 99.7% rejections for Direct red 23, Acid brown 75, and Reactive blue 21 solutions (100 mg/L), respectively. The 0.75 wt % His-MAX LNM could reject 99.1% of dye and 11.5% of salt while maintaining an FRR of 91.19% after four cycles of filtering a binary mixture solution containing Reactive blue 21 and Na2SO4. These findings highlight the potential of the fabricated LNM for desalinating dye solutions.

The In Vivo Fate of Polycatecholamine Coated Nanoparticles Is Determined by a Fibrinogen Enriched Protein Corona

Polycatecholamine coatings have attracted significant attention in the past 10 years owing to their ability to functionalize a wide range of materials. Here we apply the use of such coatings to drug nanocrystals, made from a poorly soluble drug compound, to postfunctionalize the nanocrystal surface with the aim of providing steric stabilization and extending their circulation time after intravenous injection. We show that both polydopamine and polynorepinephrine can be used to successfully modify drug nanocrystals and subsequently incorporate end-functionalized PEG to the surface. Even though high grafting densities of PEG were achieved, we observed rapid clearance and increased liver uptake for polycatecholamine functionalized drug nanocrystals. Using both surface sensitive model systems and protein corona profiling, we determine that the rapid clearance was correlated with an increase in adsorption of proteins involved in coagulation to the polycatecholamine surface, with fibrinogen being the most abundant. Further analysis of the most abundant proteins revealed a significant increase in thiol-rich proteins on polycatecholamine coated surfaces. The observed interaction with coagulation proteins highlights one of the current challenges using polycatecholamines for drug delivery but might also provide insights to the growing use of these materials in hemostatic applications.

[Preparation of berberine-naringin dual drug-loaded composite microspheres and evaluation of their antibacterial-osteogenic properties]

Objective

To develop a drug-loaded composite microsphere that can simultaneously release the berberine (BBR) and naringin (NG) to repair infectious bone defects.

Methods

The NG was loaded on mesoporous microspheres (MBG) to obtain the drug-loaded microspheres (NG-MBG). Then the dual drug-loaded compound microspheres (NG-MBG@PDA-BBR) were obtained by wrapping NG-MBG with polydopamine (PDA) and modifying the coated PDA with BBR. The composite microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, specific surface area and pore volume analyzer, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; the drug loading rate and release of NG and BBR were measured; the colony number was counted and the bacterial inhibition rate was calculated after co-culture with Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli for 12 hours to observe the antibacterial effect; the biocompatibility was evaluated by live/dead cell fluorescence staining and cell counting kit 8 assay after co-culture with rat's BMSCs for 24 and 72 hours, respectively, and the osteogenic property was evaluated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining and alizarin red staining after 7 and 14 days, respectively.

Results

NG-MBG@PDA-BBR and three control microspheres (MBG, MBG@PDA, and NG-MBG@PDA) were successfully constructed. Scanning electron microscopy showed that NG-MBG@PDA-BBR had a rough lamellar structure, while MBG had a smooth surface, and MBG@PDA and NG-MBG@PDA had a wrapped agglomeration structure. Specific surface area analysis showed that MBG had a mesoporous structure and had drug-loading potential. Low angle X-ray diffraction showed that NG was successfully loaded on MBG. The X-ray diffraction pattern contrast showed that all groups of microspheres were amorphous. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that NG and BBR peaks existed in NG-MBG@PDA-BBR. NG-MBG@PDA-BBR had good sustained drug release ability, and NG and BBR had early burst release and late sustained release. NG-MBG@PDA-BBR could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the antibacterial ability was significantly higher than that of MBG, MBG@PDA, and NG-MBG@PDA ( P<0.05). But there was a significant difference in biocompatibility at 72 hours among microspheres ( P<0.05). ALP and alizarin red staining showed that the ALP positive area and the number of calcium nodules in NG-MBG@PDA-BBR were significantly higher than those of MBG and NG-MBG ( P<0.05), and there was no significant difference between NG-MBG@PDA and NG-MBG@PDA ( P>0.05).

Conclusion

NG-MBG@PDA-BBR have sustained release effects on NG and BBR, indicating that it has ideal dual performance of osteogenesis and antibacterial property.

Cell-nano interactions of polydopamine nanoparticles

Polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles (NPs) have diverse nanomedicine applications owing to their biocompatibility and abundant entry to cells. Yet, our knowledge in their interactions with cells was infrequently studied until recent years. This review presents the latest insights into the cell-nano interactions of PDA NPs, including their 'self-targeting' to dopamine receptors for cellular entry without the aid of ligands, in vitro 'self-therapeutic' cellular responses (antiferroptosis, macrophage polarization, and modulation of mitochondrial bioenergetics) in the absence of drugs, and in vivo cellular localization and pharmacological properties upon various routes of administration. This review concludes with our perspectives on the therapeutic promise of PDA NPs and the need for studies on PDA biochemistry, biodegradability, and protein adsorption.

Recognition of Oligonucleotide C by Polydopamine-Coated Solid-State Nanopores

Selective recognition of short oligonucleotides at the single-molecule level is particularly important for early disease detection and treatment. In this work, polydopamine (PDA)-coated nanopores were prepared via self-polymerization as a solid-state nanopore sensing platform for the recognition of oligonucleotide C (PolyC). The PDA coating possesses abundant active sites, such as indole, amino, carboxyl, catechol, and quinone structures, which had interactions with short oligonucleotides to slow down the translocation rate. PDA-coated nanopores selectively interact with PolyC20 by virtue of differences in hydrogen bonding forces, generating a larger blocking current, while polyA and polyT demonstrated very small blockings. At the same time, PDA-coated nanopores can sensitively distinguish PolyC with different lengths, such as 20, 14, and 10 nt. The functionalization of PDA on the solid-state nanopore provides an opportunity for the rational design of the recognition surface for biomolecules.

Biopolymer separators from polydopamine-functionalized bacterial cellulose for lithium-sulfur batteries

The advancement of the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is immensely impeded by two main challenges: polysulfide shuttling between the electrodes and Li dendrite formation associated with the Li-metal anode. To tackle these challenges, we synthesized a polydopamine coated bacterial cellulose (PDA@BC) separator in a way to create physical and chemical traps for the shuttling polysulfides and to control the Li+ flux. While nanocellulose offers its dense network as a physical trap, the presence of polydopamine in the separator offers polar functional groups which not only has a high binding energy towards the polysulfides but also helps in redistribution of the Li+ ions across it. The electrochemical and physiochemical results suggest that the synthesized separator can have practical applicability owing to its superior performance compared to a commercial separator. The Li-S batteries assembled with this separator showed a specific discharge capacity of 1449 mAh/g at 0.1C and 877 mAh/g at 1C, and a capacity fade of 0.03 % per cycle over 650 cycles at 1C. Using a PDA@BC separator, a practical Li-S battery cell with S loading of 7.5 mg cm-2 (and E/S ratio of 10 µLmg-1, 82 % S ratio) was also tested at 1C, which delivered a capacity of ∼ 6 mAh cm-2 for 500 cycles.

Fabrication and Characterization of a Polydopamine-Modified Bacterial Cellulose and Sugarcane Filter Cake-Derived Hydroxyapatite Composite Scaffold

The search for environmentally friendly and sustainable sources of raw materials has been ongoing for quite a while, and currently, the utilization and applications of agro-industrial biomass residues in biomedicine are being researched. In this study, a polydopamine (PDA)-modified bacterial cellulose (BC) and hydroxyapatite (HA) composite scaffold was fabricated using the freeze-drying method. The as-prepared hydroxyapatite was synthesized via the chemical precipitation method using sugarcane filter cake as a calcium source, as reported in a previous study. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a carbonated phase of the prepared hydroxyapatite, similar to that of the natural bone mineral. Wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis revealed the successful fabrication of BC/HA composite scaffolds, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that PDA was deposited on the surface of the BC/HA composite scaffolds. In vitro cell viability assays indicated that BC/HA and PDA-modified composite scaffolds did not induce cytotoxicity and were biocompatible with MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts. PDA-modified composite scaffolds showed enhanced protein adsorption capacity in vitro compared to the unmodified scaffolds. On a concluding note, these results demonstrate that agro-industrial biomass residues have the potential to be used in biomedical applications and that PDA-modified BC/HA composite scaffolds are a promising biomaterial for bone tissue engineering.

Multifunctional modifications of polyetheretherketone implants for bone repair: A comprehensive review

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has emerged as a highly promising orthopedic implantation material due to its elastic modulus which is comparable to that of natural bone. This polymer exhibits impressive properties for bone implantation such as corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, self-lubrication and chemical stability. Significantly, compared to metal-based implants, PEEK implants have mechanical properties that are closer to natural bone, which can mitigate the "stress shielding" effect in bone implantation. Nevertheless, PEEK is incapable of inducing osteogenesis due to its bio-inert molecular structure, thereby hindering the osseointegration process. To optimize the clinical application of PEEK, researchers have been working on promoting its bioactivity and endowing this polymer with beneficial properties, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and angiogenesis-promoting capabilities. Considering the significant growth of research on PEEK implants over the past 5 years, this review aims to present a timely update on PEEK's modification methods. By highlighting the latest advancements in PEEK modification, we hope to provide guidance and inspiration for researchers in developing the next generation bone implants and optimizing their clinical applications.

Effect of Codeposition of Polydopamine with Polyethylenimine or Poly(ethylene glycol) Coatings on Silver Nanoparticle Synthesis

This study investigated the effects of polydopamine (PDA), PDA/polyethylenimine (PEI), and PDA/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) deposition on silver nanoparticle (AgNP) formation. PEI or PEG with different molecular weights was mixed with dopamine at different concentrations to obtain various PDA/PEI or PDA/PEG codepositions. These codepositions were soaked in silver nitrate solution to observe AgNPs generated on the surface and then to examine the catalytic activity of AgNPs for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. Results revealed that AgNPs on PDA/PEI or PDA/PEG codepositions were smaller and more dispersed than those on PDA coatings. Codeposition with 0.5 mg/mL polymer and 2 mg/mL dopamine generated the smallest AgNPs in each codeposition system. The content of AgNPs on PDA/PEI codeposition first increased and then decreased with an increase in the PEI concentration. PEI with a molecular weight of 600 (PEI₆₀₀) generated a higher AgNP content than did PEI with a molecular weight of 10000. The AgNP content did not change with the concentration and molecular weight of PEG. Except for the codeposition with 0.5 mg/mL PEI₆₀₀, codepositions produced less silver than did the PDA coating. The catalytic activity of AgNPs on all codepositions was better than that on PDA. The catalytic activity of AgNPs on all codepositions was related to the size of AgNPs. Smaller AgNPs exhibited more satisfactory catalytic activity. The codeposition with 0.5 mg/mL PEI₆₀₀ had the highest rate constant (1.64 min^-1). The systematic study provides insight into the relationship between various codepositions and AgNP generation and demonstrates that the composition of these codepositions can be tuned to increase their applicability.
