Interface chemistry of two-dimensional heterostructures - fundamentals to applications

Strong interactions through the highly polar "Early-Late" metal-metal bonds enable single-atom catalysts good durability and superior bifunctional ORR/OER activity

Simultaneously enhancing the durability and catalytic performance of metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-Nx-C) single-atom catalysts is critical to boost oxygen electrocatalysis for energy conversion and storage, yet it remains a grand challenge. Herein, through the combination of early and late metals, we proposed to enhance the stability and tune the catalytic activity of M-Nx-C SACs in oxygen electrocatalysis by their strong interaction with the M2'C-type MXene substrate. Our density functional theory (DFT) computations revealed that the strong interaction between "early-late" metal-metal bonds significantly improves thermal and electrochemical stability. Due to considerable charge transfer and shift of the d-band center, the electronic properties of these SACs can be extensively modified, thereby optimizing their adsorption strength with oxygenated intermediates and achieving eight promising bifunctional catalysts for ORR/OER with low overpotentials. More importantly, the constant-potential analysis demonstrated the excellent bifunctional activity of SACs supported on MXene substrate across a broad pH range, especially in strongly alkaline media with record-low overpotentials. Further machine learning analysis shows that the d-band center, the charge of the active site, and the work function of the formed heterojunctions are critical to revealing the ORR/OER activity origin. Our results underscore the vast potential of strong interactions between different metal species in enhancing the durability and catalytic performance of SACs.

Mixed-Dimensional van der Waals Heterostructure (2D ReS2/0D MoS2 Quantum Dots)-Based Broad Spectral Range with Ultrahigh-Responsive Photodetector

The remarkable properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have led to significant advancements in photodetection and optoelectronics research. Currently, there are many successful methods that are employed to improve the responsivity of photodetectors, but the limited spectral range of the device remains a limitation. This work demonstrates the development of a mixed-dimensional (2D/0D) hybrid photodetector device fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown monolayer ReS2 and solution-processed MoS2 quantum dots (QDs). The mixed dimensionality of 2D (ReS2) and zero-dimensional (0D) MoS2 QDs assist in improving the spectral range of the device [ultraviolet (360 nm) to near-infrared (780 nm)]. Further, due to the work function difference between ReS2 and MoS2 QDs, the built-in electric field across the mixed-dimensional interface promotes effective charge separation and migration, resulting in improved responsivities of the device. The calculated responsivities of the fabricated photodetector are 5.4 × 102, 3.3 × 102, and 2.6 × 102 A/W when subjected to visible, UV, and NIR light illumination, which is remarkable when compared to the existing reports on broadband photodetection. The mixed-dimensionality heterostructure coupled with contact engineering paves the way for highly responsive broadband photodetectors for potential applications in security, healthcare, etc.

Strain-Induced Self-Assembly at Interface of Two-Dimensional Heterostructures Boosts CO2 Reduction to Methanol by H2O

CO2 conversion with pure H2O into CH3OH and O2 driven by solar energy can supply fuels and life-essential substances for extraterrestrial exploration. However, the effective production of CH3OH is significantly challenging. Here we report an organozinc complex/MoS2 heterostructure linked by well-defined zinc-sulfur covalent bonds derived by the structural deformation and intensive coupling of dx2 - y2(Zn)-p(S) orbitals at the interface, resulting in distinctive charge transfer behaviors and excellent redox capabilities as revealed by experimental characterizations and first-principle calculations. The synthesis strategy is further generalized to more organometallic compounds, achieving various heterostructures for CO2 photoreduction. The optimal catalyst delivers a promising CH3OH yield of 2.57 mmol gcat-1 h-1 and selectivity of more than 99.5%. The reverse water gas shift mechanism is identified for methanol formation. Meanwhile, energy-unfavorable adsorption of methanol on MoS2, where the photogenerated holes accumulate, ensures the selective oxidation of water over methanol.

Interfacial Assembly of 2D Graphene-Derived Ion Channels for Water-Based Green Energy Conversion

The utilization of sustained and green energy is believed to alleviate increasing menace of global environmental concerns and energy dilemma. Interfacial assembly of 2D graphene-derived ion channels (2D-GDICs) with tunable ion/fluid transport behavior enables efficient harvesting of renewable green energy from ubiquitous water, especially for osmotic energy harvesting. In this review, various interfacial assembly strategies for fabricating diverse 2D-GDICs are summarized and their ion transport properties are discussed. This review analyzes how particular structure and charge density/distribution of 2D-GDIC can be modulated to minimize internal resistance of ion/fluid transport and enhance energy conversion efficiency, and highlights stimuli-responsive functions and stability of 2D-GDIC and further examines the possibility of integrating 2D-GDIC with other energy conversion systems. Notably, the presented preparation and applications of 2D-GDIC also inspire and guide other 2D materials to fabricate sophisticated ion channels for targeted applications. Finally, potential challenges in this field is analyzed and a prospect to future developments toward high-performance or large-scale real-word applications is offered.

Green construction of biochar@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite for highly efficient photocatalytic remediation of pesticides from agriculture wastewater

The world's attention is drawn to the widespread ingestion, toxicity, and bioaccumulation of the Atrazine (AT) and Endosulfan (ES). Pesticides have been proven to have endocrine-disrupting, genotoxic, and persistent characteristics. In this work, the structural design of green synthesized NiFe2O4 is incorporated in rice husk biochar to form BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite. Powder X-ray diffraction and microscopic analysis confirmed the semi-crystalline nature of BC@NiFe2O4 reduced due to the incorporation of amorphous BC. The green BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite degraded AT and ES up to 98 % and 92 %, respectively. The maximum degradation achieved by BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite with minimum pollutants concentration (50 mg L-1) with 10 mg catalyst dose at acidic pH in natural sunlight because of the higher negative value of zeta potential (-26.4 mV) and lower band gap (2.5 eV). The degradation process involves first-order kinetics followed by initial Langmuir adsorption. The presence of various radical quenchers (t-BuOH, p-BZQ, Na2EDTA) has led to the conclusion that hydroxyl radicals play a significant role in the degradation of the toxic substances AT and ES. Additionally, a green-fabricated BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite has exhibited exceptional efficiency in degrading AT and ES pollutants in actual wastewater samples. Furthermore, this nanocomposite has demonstrated outstanding sustainability and cost-effectiveness, maintaining its effectiveness for up to eight cycles without a noticeable reduction in activity. In summary, due to its favorable surface characteristics, the environmentally friendly BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite holds excellent promise as a unique and potential photocatalyst for various industrial applications.

Z-scheme Al2SeTe/GaSe and Al2SeTe/InS van der Waals heterostructures for photocatalytic water splitting

Designing Z-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterostructured photocatalysts is a promising strategy for developing highly efficient overall water splitting. Herein, by employing density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigated the stability, electronic structures, photocatalytic and optical properties of Al2SeTe, GaSe, and InS monolayers and their corresponding vdW heterostructures. Interestingly, electronic structures show that all vdW heterostructures have direct band gaps, which is conducive to the transition of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. Notably, Al2TeSe/GaSe and Al2TeSe/InS vdW heterostructures possess large overpotentials for Z-scheme photocatalytic water splitting, as proved by the results of band edge positions and band structure bending. Moreover, these vdW heterostructures exhibit good optical absorption in ultraviolet and visible light regions. We believe that our findings will open a new avenue for the modulation and development of Al2TeSe/GaSe and Al2TeSe/InS vdW heterostructures for photocatalytic water splitting.

Engineering Interfacial Built-in Electric Field in Polymetallic Phosphide Heterostructures for Superior Supercapacitors and Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Herein, a patterned rod-like CoP@NiCoP core-shell heterostructure is designed to consist of CoP nanowires cross-linked with NiCoP nanosheets in tight strings. The interfacial interaction within the heterojunction between the two components generates a built-in electric field that adjusts the interfacial charge state and create more active sites, accelerating the charge transfer and improving supercapacitor and electrocatalytic performance. The unique core-shell structure suppresses the volume expansion during charging and discharging, achieving excellent stability. As a result, CoP@NiCoP exhibits a high specific capacitance of 2.9 F cm-2 at a current density of 3 mA cm-2 and a high ion diffusion rate (Dion is 2.95 × 10-14  cm2  s-1 ) during charging/discharging. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor CoP@NiCoP//AC exhibits a high energy density of 42.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 126.5 W kg-1 and excellent stability with a capacitance retention rate of 83.8% after 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, the modulated effect induced by the interfacial interaction also endows the self-supported electrode with excellent electrocatalytic HER performance with an overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mA cm-2 . This research may provide a new perspective on the generation of built-in electric field through the rational design of heterogeneous structures for improving the electrochemical and electrocatalytical performance.

Phase Engineering and Synchrotron-Based Study on Two-Dimensional Energy Nanomaterials

In recent years, there has been significant interest in the development of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties for various energy applications. These properties are often derived from the phase structures established through a range of physical and chemical design strategies. A concrete analysis of the phase structures and real reaction mechanisms of 2D energy nanomaterials requires advanced characterization methods that offer valuable information as much as possible. Here, we present a comprehensive review on the phase engineering of typical 2D nanomaterials with the focus of synchrotron radiation characterizations. In particular, the intrinsic defects, atomic doping, intercalation, and heterogeneous interfaces on 2D nanomaterials are introduced, together with their applications in energy-related fields. Among them, synchrotron-based multiple spectroscopic techniques are emphasized to reveal their intrinsic phases and structures. More importantly, various in situ methods are employed to provide deep insights into their structural evolutions under working conditions or reaction processes of 2D energy nanomaterials. Finally, conclusions and research perspectives on the future outlook for the further development of 2D energy nanomaterials and synchrotron radiation light sources and integrated techniques are discussed.

Boosting Electro- and Photo-Catalytic Activities in Atomically Thin Nanomaterials by Heterointerface Engineering

Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional ultrathin nanomaterials with an atomic thickness (typically <5 nm) have attracted tremendous interest due to their fascinating chemical and physical properties. These ultrathin nanomaterials, referred to as atomically thin materials (ATMs), possess inherent advantages such as a high specific area, highly exposed surface-active sites, efficient atom utilization, and unique electronic structures. While substantial efforts have been devoted to advancing ATMs through structural chemistry, the potential of heterointerface engineering to enhance their properties has not yet been fully recognized. Indeed, the introduction of bi- or multi-components to construct a heterointerface has emerged as a crucial strategy to overcome the limitations in property enhancement during ATM design. In this review, we aim to summarize the design principles of heterointerfacial ATMs, present general strategies for manipulating their interfacial structure and catalytic properties, and provide an overview of their application in energy conversion and storage, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR), photocatalysis, and rechargeable batteries. The central theme of this review is to establish correlations among interfacial modulation, structural and electronic properties, and ATMs' major applications. Finally, based on the current research progress, we propose future directions that remain unexplored in interfacial ATMs for enhancing their properties and introducing novel functionalities in practical applications.

Step-by-Step Guide for Synthesis and Delamination of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene

To advance the MXene field, it is crucial to optimize each step of the synthesis process and create a detailed, systematic guide for synthesizing high-quality MXene that can be consistently reproduced. In this study, a detailed guide is provided for an optimized synthesis of titanium carbide (Ti3 C2 Tx ) MXene using a mixture of hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids for the selective etching of the stoichimetric-Ti3 AlC2 MAX phase and delamination of the etched multilayered Ti3 C2 Tx MXene using lithium chloride at 65 °C for 1 h with argon bubbling. The effect of different synthesis variables is investigated, including the stoichiometry of the mixed powders to synthesize Ti3 AlC2 , pre-etch impurity removal conditions, selective etching, storage, and drying of MXene multilayer powder, and the subsequent delamination conditions. The synthesis yield and the MXene film electrical conductivity are used as the two parameters to evaluate the MXene quality. Also the MXenes are characterized with scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and ellipsometry. The Ti3 C2 Tx film made via the optimized method shows electrical conductivity as high as ≈21,000 S/cm with a synthesis yield of up to 38 %. A detailed protocol is also provided for the Ti3 C2 Tx MXene synthesis as the supporting information for this study.

Layered Double Hydroxides: A Novel Promising 2D Nanomaterial for Bone Diseases Treatment

Bone diseases including bone defects, bone infections, osteoarthritis, and bone tumors seriously affect life quality of the patient and bring serious economic burdens to social health management, for which the current clinical treatments bear dissatisfactory therapeutic effects. Biomaterial-based strategies have been widely applied in the treatment of orthopedic diseases but are still plagued by deficient bioreactivity. With the development of nanotechnology, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with adjustable metal ion composition and alterable interlayer structure possessing charming physicochemical characteristics, versatile bioactive properties, and excellent drug loading and delivery capabilities arise widespread attention and have achieved considerable achievements for bone disease treatment in the last decade. However, to the authors' best knowledge, no review has comprehensively summarized the advances of LDHs in treating bone disease so far. Herein, the advantages of LDHs for orthopedic disorders treatment are outlined and the corresponding state-of-the-art achievements are summarized for the first time. The potential of LDHs-based nanocomposites for extended therapeutics for bone diseases is highlighted and perspectives for LDHs-based scaffold design are proposed for facilitated clinical translation.

Harmonious Heterointerfaces Formed on 2D-Pt Nanodendrites by Facet-Respective Stepwise Metal Deposition for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The performance of nanocrystal (NC) catalysts could be maximized by introducing rationally designed heterointerfaces formed by the facet- and spatio-specific modification with other materials of desired size and thickness. However, such heterointerfaces are limited in scope and synthetically challenging. Herein, we applied a wet chemistry method to tunably deposit Pd and Ni on the available surfaces of porous 2D-Pt nanodendrites (NDs). Using 2D silica nanoreactors to house the 2D-PtND, an 0.5-nm-thick epitaxial Pd or Ni layer (e-Pd or e-Ni) was exclusively formed on the flat {110} surface of 2D-Pt, while a non-epitaxial Pd or Ni layer (n-Pd or n-Ni) was typically deposited at the {111/100} edge in absence of nanoreactor. Notably, these differently located Pd/Pt and Ni/Pt heterointerfaces experienced distinct electronic effect to influence unequally in electrocatalytic synergy for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). For instance, an enhanced H2 generation on the Pt{110} facet with 2D-2D interfaced e-Pd deposition and faster water dissociation on the edge-located n-Ni overpowered their facet-located counterparts in respective HER catalysis. Therefore, a feasible assembling of the valuable heterointerfaces in the optimal 2D n-Ni/e-Pd/Pt catalyst overcame the sluggish alkaline HER kinetics, with a catalytic activity 7.9 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C.

Stabilization of transition metal heterojunctions inside porous materials for high-performance catalysis

Transition metal-based heterostructural materials are a class of very promising substitutes for noble metal-based catalysts for high-performance catalysis, due to their inherent internal electric field at the interface in the heterojunctions, which could induce electron relocalization and facilitate charge carrier migration between different metal sites at heterostructural boundaries. However, redox-active metal species suffer from reduction, oxidation, migration, aggregation, leaching and poisoning in catalysis, which results in heavy deterioration of the catalytic properties of transition metal-based heterojunctions and frustrates their practical applications. To improve the stability of transition metal-based heterojunctions and sufficiently expose redox-active sites at the heterosurfaces, many kinds of porous materials have been used as porous hosts for the stabilization of non-precious metal heterojunctions. This review article will discuss recently developed strategies for encapsulation and stabilization of transition metal heterojunctions inside porous materials, and highlight their improved stability and catalytic performance through the spatial confinement effect and synergistic interaction between the heterojunctions and the host matrices.

Improving the intrinsic activity of ultrathin 2D-2D heterostructures by bridge-bonded Ni-O-Ti ligands for efficient oxygen evolution

The integration of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with other conductive 2D materials to form hybrid electrocatalysts with abundant heterointerfaces can enhance the electrocatalytic activity by facilitating interfacial charge transfer. However, the hybrid electrocatalysts with weak interfacial bonding have limited effect on the electrocatalytic performance because the intrinsic activity of interfacial sites cannot be altered by weak interfacial interactions. As a proof-of-concept, we design ultrathin 2D-2D heterostructures with bridge-bonded Ni-O-Ti ligands based on single-layered Ti₃C₂T_xMXene and metal hydroxides, and further reveal the structure-activity correlation between interfacial bonding and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction by combining theoretical and experimental studies. Density functional theory calculations reveal the modulation of the electronic structure of interfacial metal sites after the formation of bridged interfacial Ni-O-Ti bonding. Compared with the hydrogen-bond-linked heterostructure, the ultrathin 2D-2D heterostructure with bridge-bonded Ni-O-Ti ligands shows enhanced intrinsic activity and stability towards electrocatalytic oxygen evolution with a very low overpotential of 205 mV at 10 mA cm^-2and the long-term durability. This work provides a new understanding and approach for the design and development of 2D hybrid catalysts with highly efficient electrocatalytic activity.

Enhancing optical characteristics of mediator-assisted wafer-scale MoS2and WS2on h-BN

Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their heterostructures exhibit intriguing optoelectronic properties; thus, they are good platforms for exploring fundamental research and further facilitating real device applications. The key is to preserve the high quality and intrinsic properties of 2D materials and their heterojunction interface even in production scale during the transfer and assembly process so as to apply in semiconductor manufacturing field. In this study, we successfully adopted a wet transfer existing method to separate mediator-assisted wafer-scale from SiO₂/Si growing wafer for the first time with intermediate annealing to fabricate wafer-scale MoS₂/h-BN and WS₂/h-BN heterostructures on a SiO₂/Si wafer. Interestingly, the high-quality wafer-scale 2D material heterostructure optical properties were enhanced and confirmed by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Our approach can be applied to other 2D materials and expedite mass production for industrial applications.

Research Process on Photodetectors based on Group-10 Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Rapidly evolving group-10 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer remarkable electronic, optical, and mechanical properties, making them promising candidates for advanced optoelectronic applications. Compared to most TMDCs semiconductors, group-10-TMDCs possess unique structures, narrow bandgap, and influential physical properties that motivate the development of broadband photodetectors, specifically infrared photodetectors. This review presents the latest developments in the fabrication of broadband photodetectors based on conventional 2D TMDCs. It mainly focuses on the recent developments in group-10 TMDCs from the perspective of the lattice structure and synthesis techniques. Recent progress in group-10 TMDCs and their heterostructures with different dimensionality of materials-based broadband photodetectors is provided. Moreover, this review accounts for the latest applications of group-10 TMDCs in the fields of nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Finally, conclusions and outlooks are summarized to provide perspectives for next-generation broadband photodetectors based on group-10 TMDCs.

Interlayer Charge Transfer Regulates Single-Atom Catalytic Activity on Electride/Graphene 2D Heterojunctions

Single-atom catalysts with structure and activity tunability have attracted significant attention for energy and environmental applications. Herein we present a first-principles study of single-atom catalysis on two-dimensional graphene and electride heterostructures. The anion electron gas in the electride layer enables a colossal electron transfer to the graphene layer, with the degree of transfer being controllable by the selection of electride. The charge transfer tunes the d-orbital electron occupancy of a single metal atom, enhancing the catalytic activity of hydrogen evolution reactions and oxygen reduction reactions. The strong correlation between the adsorption energy E_ads and the charge variation Δq suggests that interfacial charge transfer is a critical catalytic descriptor for the heterostructure-based catalysts. The polynomial regression model proves the importance of charge transfer and accurately predicts the adsorption energy of ions and molecules. This study provides a strategy to obtain high-efficiency single-atom catalysts using two-dimensional heterostructures.

Edge-oriented phosphatizing engineering of 2D Ni-MOFs with a tailored d-band center for boosting catalytic activity

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterostructures have aroused widespread interest owing to their extensive compositional tunability and interesting catalytic properties. However, the precise edge-oriented growth of transition metal compounds at the edges of 2D MOFs to construct edge mode heterostructures remains a great challenge due to their inherent thermodynamic instability. Here, edge-oriented growth of Ni₂P at the edges of a 2D Ni-MOF was achieved for the first time by precisely tuning the phosphorus source content and phosphating temperature. Owing to the formation of the edge mode Ni-MOF/Ni₂P heterostructure, the as-prepared heterostructure showed upregulated d-band center, more robust 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) adsorption capacity, lowered energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS), and higher specific surface area, resulting in the best performance of the hydrogenation reduction of 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) in the presence of non-precious metal catalysts.

Heterogeneous Structure of Sn/SnO2 Constructed via Phase Engineering for Efficient and Stable CO2 Reduction

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR) catalyzed by Sn-based materials shows great potential for CO₂-to-formate conversion. The presence of tin species with different oxidation states can promote the catalytic performance, most likely due to the interfaces of metallic and oxide phases that induce a synergistic effect. Therefore, it is desirable yet challenging to synthesize a hybrid catalyst with abundant active heterogeneous interfaces. Herein, we synthesize a hybrid catalyst constructed by decorating nanosized SnS₂ in the SnO₂ matrix. The uniformly distributed SnS₂ nanoparticles are first reduced to metallic tin, which assists in the generation of abundant Sn/SnO₂ heterogeneous interfaces under the in situ reduction process. Because of the electronic modulation at the heterogeneous interfaces, the resulting catalyst delivers a high current density of 200 mA·cm^-2 at -0.86 V vs RHE, and the performance is stable for over 20 h. This work suggests a potentially powerful interface engineering strategy for the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for the CO₂RR.

Synthesis and Characterization of Highly Crystalline Bi-Functional Mn-Doped Zn2SiO4 Nanostructures by Low-Cost Sol-Gel Process

Herein, we demonstrate a process for the synthesis of a highly crystalline bi-functional manganese (Mn)-doped zinc silicate (Zn₂SiO₄) nanostructures using a low-cost sol-gel route followed by solid state reaction method. Structural and morphological characterizations of Mn-doped Zn₂SiO₄ with variable doping concentration of 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt% were investigated by using X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques. HR-TEM-assisted elemental mapping of the as-grown sample was conducted to confirm the presence of Mn in Zn₂SiO_4. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicated that the Mn-doped Zn₂SiO₄ nanostructures exhibited strong green emission at 521 nm under 259 nm excitation wavelengths. It was observed that PL intensity increased with the increase of Mn-doping concentration in Zn₂SiO₄ nanostructures, with no change in emission peak position. Furthermore, magnetism in doped Zn₂SiO₄ nanostructures was probed by static DC magnetization measurement. The observed photoluminescence and magnetic properties in Mn-doped Zn₂SiO₄ nanostructures are discussed in terms of structural defect/lattice strain caused by Mn doping and the Jahn-Teller effect. These bi-functional properties of as-synthesized Zn₂SiO₄ nanostructures provide a new platform for their potential applications towards magneto-optical and spintronic and devices areas.

Magnetic Properties and Microstructure of FePt(BN, X, C) (X = Ag, Re) Films

A sputtered FePt(BN, Re, C) film, here boron nitride (BN), was compared to a reference sample FePt(BN, Ag, C). Intrinsically, these films illustrate a high anisotropy field (H_k) and perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (K_u),although the reference sample shows a higher value (H_k = 69.5 kOe, K_u = 1.74 × 10⁷ erg/cm³) than the FePt(BN, Re, C) film (H_k = 66.9 kOe, K_u = 1.46 × 10⁷ erg/cm³). However, the small difference in the anisotropy constant (K2/K1) ratio presents a close tendency in the angular dependence of the switching field. Extrinsically, the out-of-plane coercivity for the reference sample is 32 kOe, which is also higher than the FePt(BN, Re, C) film (H_c = 27 kOe), and both films present lower remanence (Mr_(parallel)/Mr_{(perpendicular)} = 0.08~0.12), that is, the index for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The higher perpendicular magnetization for both films was due to highly (001) textured FePt films, which was also evidenced by the tight rocking width of 4.1°/3.0° for (001)/(002) X-ray diffraction peaks, respectively, and high-enough ordering degree. The reference sample was measured to have a higher ordering degree (S = 0.84) than FePt(BN, Re, C) (S = 0.63). As a result, the Ag segregant shows stronger ability to promote the ordering of the FePt film; however, the FePt(BN, Re, C) film still has comparable magnetic properties without Ag doping. From the surface and elemental composition analysis, the metallic Re atoms found in the FePt lattice result in a strong spin-orbital coupling between transition metal Fe (3d electron) and heavy metals (Re, Pt) (5d electron) and we conducted high magnetocrystalline anisotropy (K_u). Above is the explanation that the lower-ordered FePt(BN, Re, C) film still has high-enough Ku and out-of-plane Hc. Regarding the microstructure, both the reference sample and FePt(BN, Re, C) show granular structure and columnar grains, and the respective average grain size and distributions are 6.60 nm (12.5%) and 11.2 nm (15.9%). The average widths of the grain boundaries and the aspect ratio of the columnar grain height are 2.05 nm, 1.00 nm, 2.35 nm, and 1.70 nm, respectively.

Interface contact and modulated electronic properties by in-plain strains in a graphene-MoS2 heterostructure

Designing a specific heterojunction by assembling suitable two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors has shown significant potential in next-generation micro-nano electronic devices. In this paper, we study the structural and electronic properties of graphene-MoS₂ (Gr-MoS₂) heterostructures with in-plain biaxial strain using density functional theory. It is found that the interaction between graphene and monolayer MoS₂ is characterized by a weak van der Waals interlayer coupling with the stable layer spacing of 3.39 Å and binding energy of 0.35 J m^-2. In the presence of MoS₂, the linear bands on the Dirac cone of graphene are slightly split. A tiny band gap about 1.2 meV opens in the Gr-MoS₂ heterojunction due to the breaking of sublattice symmetry, and it could be effectively modulated by strain. Furthermore, an n-type Schottky contact is formed at the Gr-MoS₂ interface with a Schottky barrier height of 0.33 eV, which can be effectively modulated by in-plane strain. Especially, an n-type ohmic contact is obtained when 6% tensile strain is imposed. The appearance of the non-zero band gap in graphene has opened up new possibilities for its application and the ohmic contact predicts the Gr-MoS₂ van der Waals heterojunction nanocomposite as a competitive candidate in next-generation optoelectronics and Schottky devices.

Metal-Organic Framework Fluorescence Sensors for Rapid and Accurate Detection of Melamine in Milk Powder

In this research, a simple, label-free, and ultra-sensitive fluorescent platform based on a metal-organic framework (MOF) has been developed to detect melamine in milk powder. This fluorescence sensor was fabricated from sensitized terbium (Tb)@NH₂-MIL-253 (Al) MOF using a hydrothermal method that involved combining the green emission of Tb (λ_em = 545 nm) with the blue emission of NH₂-MIL-253(Al) MOF (λ_em = 430 nm) under a single excitation wavelength (λ_ex = 335 nm). The fluorescence sensor was then used under optimized conditions (pH = 9.0; sensor concentration = 30 mg/L; response time = 30 s) to quantify melamine in milk powder. The accuracy, sensitivity, and reproducibility of this sensor were established compared to the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The linear range and lower limit of detection (LLOD, computed with 3σ/S) of the sensor were between 40-396.45 nM (equal to 25 µg/kg-0.25 mg/kg) and 40 nM (equal to 25 µg/kg), respectively, which is much less than the maximum residual level (MRL) for the detection of melamine in infant formula (1 mg/kg) and other foods/feeds (2.5 mg/kg). Additionally, the results had good agreement with the HPLC outcomes, suggesting that the NH₂-MIL-253(Al) MOF sensing probe has great precision and repeatability. To conclude, the new fluorescence sensor developed in this study can accurately and sensitively detect melamine in food samples, which may be useful for screening for adulteration of milk powders and other foods.

2D MXene-Based Biosensing: A Review

MXene emerged as decent 2D material and has been exploited for numerous applications in the last decade. The remunerations of the ideal metallic conductivity, optical absorbance, mechanical stability, higher heterogeneous electron transfer rate, and good redox capability have made MXene a potential candidate for biosensing applications. The hydrophilic nature, biocompatibility, antifouling, and anti-toxicity properties have opened avenues for MXene to perform in vitro and in vivo analysis. In this review, the concept, operating principle, detailed mechanism, and characteristic properties are comprehensively assessed and compiled along with breakthroughs in MXene fabrication and conjugation strategies for the development of unique electrochemical and optical biosensors. Further, the current challenges are summarized and suggested future aspects. This review article is believed to shed some light on the development of MXene for biosensing and will open new opportunities for the future advanced translational application of MXene bioassays.

A Lightweight, Elastic, and Thermally Insulating Stealth Foam With High Infrared-Radar Compatibility

The development of infrared-radar compatible materials/devices is challenging because the requirements of material properties between infrared and radar stealth are contradictory. Herein, a composite of poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) coated melamine foam is designed to integrate the advantages of the dual materials and the created heterogeneous interface between them. The as-designed PEDOT:PSS@melamine composite shows excellent mechanical properties, outstanding thermal insulation, and improved thermal infrared stealth performance. The relevant superb radar stealth performance including the minimum reflection loss value of -57.57 dB, the optimum ultra-wide bandwidth of 10.52 GHz, and the simulation of radar cross section reduction value of 17.68 dB m² , can be achieved. The optimal specific electromagnetic wave absorption performance can reach up as high as 3263.02 dB·cm³ g^-1 . The average electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness value can be 30.80 dB. This study provides an approach for the design of high-performance stealth materials with infrared-radar compatibility.

Recent Advances on Heterojunction-Type Anode Materials for Lithium-/Sodium-Ion Batteries

Rechargeable batteries are key in the field of electrochemical energy storage, and the development of advanced electrode materials is essential to meet the increasing demand of electrochemical energy storage devices with higher density of energy and power. Anode materials are the key components of batteries. However, the anode materials still suffer from several challenges such as low rate capability and poor cycling stability, limiting the development of high-energy and high-power batteries. In recent years, heterojunctions have received increasing attention from researchers as an emerging material, because the constructed heterostructures can significantly improve the rate capability and cycling stability of the materials. Although many research progress has been made in this field, it still lacks review articles that summarize this field in detail. Herein, this review presents the recent research progress of heterojunction-type anode materials, focusing on the application of various types of heterojunctions in lithium/sodium-ion batteries. Finally, the heterojunctions introduced in this review are summarized, and their future development is anticipated.

Giant tunneling magnetoresistance in two-dimensional magnetic tunnel junctions based on double transition metal MXene ScCr2C2F2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes) with intrinsic magnetism and half-metallic features show great promising applications for spintronic and magnetic devices, for instance, achieving perfect spin-filtering in van der Waals (vdW) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Herein, combining density functional theory calculations and nonequilibrium Green's function simulations, we systematically investigated the spin-dependent transport properties of 2D double transition metal MXene ScCr₂C₂F₂-based vdW MTJs, where ScCr₂C₂F₂ acts as the spin-filter tunnel barriers, 1T-MoS₂ acts as the electrode and 2H-MoS₂ as the tunnel barrier. We found that the spin-up electrons in the parallel configuration state play a decisive role in the transmission behavior. We found that all the constructed MTJs could hold large tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios over 9 × 10⁵%. Especially, the maximum giant TMR ratio of 6.95 × 10⁶% can be found in the vdW MTJ with trilayer 2H-MoS₂ as the tunnel barrier. These results indicate the potential for spintronic applications of vdW MTJs based on 2D double transition metal MXene ScCr₂C₂F₂.

Engineering of Defect-Rich Cu2WS4 Nano-homojunctions Anchored on Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Gaseous Elemental Mercury Removal

Fabricating two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based unique composites is an effective way to boost the overall physical and chemical properties, which will be helpful for the efficient and fast capture of elemental mercury (Hg⁰) over a wide temperature range. Herein, we constructed a defect-rich Cu₂WS₄ nano-homojunction decorated on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with abundant S vacancies. Highly well-dispersed and uniform Cu₂WS₄ nanoparticles were immobilized on COFs strongly via an ion pre-anchored strategy, consequently exhibiting enhanced Hg⁰ removal performance. The saturation adsorption capacity of Cu₂WS₄@COF composites (21.60 mg·g^-1) was 9 times larger than that of Cu₂WS₄ crystals, which may be ascribed to more active S sites exposed in hybrid interfaces formed in the Cu₂WS₄ nano-homojunction and between Cu₂WS₄ nanoparticles and COFs. More importantly, such hybrid materials reduced adsorption deactivation at high temperatures, having a wide operating temperature range (from 40 to 200 °C) owing to the thermostability of active S species immobilized by both physical confined and chemical interactions in COFs. Accordingly, this work not only provides an effective method to construct uniform TMD-based sorbents for mercury capture but also opens a new realm of advanced COF hybrid materials with designed functionalities.

Van der Waals-Interface-Dominated All-2D Electronics

The interface is the device. As the feature size rapidly shrinks, silicon-based electronic devices are facing multiple challenges of material performance decrease and interface quality degradation. Ultrathin 2D materials are considered as potential candidates in future electronics by their atomically flat surfaces and excellent immunity to short-channel effects. Moreover, due to naturally terminated surfaces and weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions between layers, 2D materials can be freely stacked without the lattice matching limit to form high-quality heterostructure interfaces with arbitrary components and twist angles. Controlled interlayer band alignment and optimized interfacial carrier behavior allow all-2D electronics based on 2D vdW interfaces to exhibit more comprehensive functionality and better performance. Especially, achieving the same computing capacity of multiple conventional devices with small footprint all-2D devices is considered to be the key development direction of future electronics. Herein, the unique properties of all-2D vdW interfaces and their construction methods are systematically reviewed and the main performance contributions of different vdW interfaces in 2D electronics are summarized, respectively. Finally, the recent progress and challenges for all-2D vdW electronics are discussed, and how to improve the compatibility of 2D material devices with silicon-based industrial technology is pointed out as a critical challenge.

An unconstrained approach to systematic structural and energetic screening of materials interfaces

From grain boundaries and heterojunctions to manipulating 2D materials, solid-solid interfaces play a key role in many technological applications. Understanding and predicting properties of these complex systems present an ongoing and increasingly important challenge. Over the last few decades computer simulation of interfaces has become vastly more powerful and sophisticated. However, theoretical interface screening remains based on largely heuristic methods and is strongly biased to systems that are amenable to modelling within constrained periodic cell approaches. Here we present an unconstrained and generally applicable non-periodic screening approach for systematic exploration of material's interfaces based on extracting and aligning disks from periodic reference slabs. Our disk interface method directly and accurately describes how interface structure and energetic stability depends on arbitrary relative displacements and twist angles of two interacting surfaces. The resultant detailed and comprehensive energetic stability maps provide a global perspective for understanding and designing interfaces. We confirm the power and utility of our method with respect to the catalytically important TiO₂ anatase (101)/(001) and TiO₂ anatase (101)/rutile (110) interfaces.

Nanoscale hetero-interfaces for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting

As green and sustainable methods to produce hydrogen energy, photocatalytic and electrochemical water splitting have been widely studied. In order to find efficient photocatalysts and electrocatalysts, materials with various composition, size, and surface/interface are investigated. In recent years, constructing suitable nanoscale hetero-interfaces can not only overcome the disadvantages of the single-phase material, but also possibly provide new functionalities. In this review, we systematically introduce the fundamental understanding and experimental progress in nanoscale hetero-interface engineering to design and fabricate photocatalytic and electrocatalytic materials for water splitting. The basic principles of photo-/electro-catalytic water splitting and the fundamentals of nanoscale hetero-interfaces are briefly introduced. The intrinsic behaviors of nanoscale hetero-interfaces on electrocatalysts and photocatalysts are summarized, which are the electronic structure modulation, space charge separation, charge/electron/mass transfer, support effect, defect effect, and synergistic effect. By highlighting the main characteristics of hetero-interfaces, the main roles of hetero-interfaces for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting are discussed, including excellent electronic structure, efficient charge separation, lower reaction energy barriers, faster charge/electron/mass transfer, more active sites, higher conductivity, and higher stability on hetero-interfaces. Following above analysis, the developments of electrocatalysts and photocatalysts with hetero-structures are systematically reviewed.

Heterostructures of tin and tungsten selenides for robust overall water splitting

Layered transition metal selenides have garnered increased attention in recent times as non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting. Tungsten diselenide @ tin diselenide heterostructures in the present study significantly increase the electrochemical performance of oxygen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 250 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and high stability for 16 h (8.9 % loss), hydrogen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 with a 21.9% loss in 16 h. The overall water splitting using a lab-size electrolyzer shows a low cell voltage (1.52 V @ 10 mA cm^-2) and high durability for 50 h (15.2% loss @ 10 mA cm^-2 and 4.4% loss @ 50 mA cm^-2). As a result, the heterostructures have demonstrated their ability to handle multiple challenges in energy conversion systems due to their unique properties.

Fabricating Black-Phosphorus/Iron-Tetraphosphide Heterostructure via a Solid-Phase Solution-Precipitation Method for High-Performance Nitrogen Reduction

Although constructing heterostructures is considered as one of the most successful strategies to improve the activity of a catalyst, the heterostructures usually suffer from the cumbersome preparation treatments and low-yield. Inspired by a solid-phase solution-precipitation (SPSP) process, an approach for interface intensive heterostructures with high yield is developed. Herein, a black-phosphorus/iron-tetraphosphide (BP/FeP₄ ) heterostructure is prepared mechanochemically with high transient pressure by the solid-phase ball milling approach. The BP/FeP₄ heterostructure delivers excellent catalytic performance in the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) as exemplified by an NH₃ yield of 77.6 µg h^-1 mg cat . - 1 \[{\rm{mg}}_{{\rm{cat}}{\rm{.}}}^{{\bm{ - }}1}\] and Faradic efficiency of 62.9% (-0.2 V), which are superior to that of most NRR catalysts recently reported. Experimental investigation and density-functional theory calculation indicate the importance of excess phosphorus in the heterostructures on the NRR activity, which assists the Fe atom to activate N₂ via adsorbing the H atom. The results demonstrate the great potential of this new type of heterostructures prepared by the SPSP approach. Benefiting from the simple preparation process and low cost, the heterostructures offer a new insight into the development of highly efficient catalysts.

Built-In Electric Field on the Mott-Schottky Heterointerface-Enabled Fast Kinetics Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries (LSBs) have been considered one of the most potential candidates to substitute traditional Li-ion batteries (LIBs), owing to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. Nevertheless, the shuttle effect and the sluggish redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) have long been obstacles to realizing stable LSBs with high reversible capacity. In this study, we proposed a metal-semiconductor (Mo and MoO₂) heterostructure with the hollow microsphere morphology as an effective Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst to boost sulfur electrochemistry. The hollow structure can physically inhibit the shuttling of LiPSs and accommodate the volume fluctuation during cycling. More importantly, the built-in electric field at the heterointerfacial sites can effectively accelerate the reduction of LiPSs and oxidation of Li₂S, thereby reaching a high sulfur utilization. With the assistance of the Mo/MoO₂ catalyst, the cell exhibited prominent rate capability and stable long-term cycling performance, showing a high capacity of 630 mA h·g^-1 at 4 C and a low decay of 0.073% at 1 C after 500 cycles. Even with high areal sulfur loading of 10.0 mg·cm^-2, high capacity and good cycle stability were achieved at 0.2 C under lean electrolyte conditions (E/S ratio of 6 μL·mg^-1).

Enhancing the interfacial binding strength between modular stretchable electronic components

Stretchable electronics are emerging for personalized and decentralized clinics, wearable devices and human-machine interactions. Nowadays, separated stretchable functional parts have been well developed and are approaching practical usage. However, the production of whole stretchable devices with full functions still faces a huge challenge: the integration of different components, which was hindered by the mechanical mismatch and stress/strain concentration at the connection interfaces. To avoid connection failure in stretchable devices, a new research focus is to improve the interfacial binding strength between different components. In this review, recent developments to enhance interfacial strength in wearable/implantable electronics are introduced and catalogued into three major strategies: (i) covalent bonding between different device parts, (ii) molecular interpenetration or mechanical interlocking at the interfaces and (iii) covalent connection between the human body and devices. Besides reviewing current methods, we also discuss the existing challenges and possible improvements for stretchable devices from the aspect of interfacial connections.

Facile synthesized zinc oxide nanorod film humidity sensor based on variation in optical transmissivity

Variation in the transmitted light intensity from metal oxide thin films with moisture content provides a great opportunity to use them for humidity sensing. Herein, we have developed a novel and simple humidity sensor based on ZnO nanorod (ZNR) thin films which work as transmission-based sensing elements in an in-house fabricated sensing setup. The ZNR sensing element shows excellent linear sensing performance in the relative humidity (RH) range 10-90% and does not show any hysteresis. A maximum change in optical power of ∼95 μW is observed with the change in RH in the range 10-90%, for the sample with the smallest crystallite size (ZNR1) and highest pore diameter of the ZNR film. Also, a maximum sensitivity of 1.104 μW/% RH is observed for the ZNR1 sample which drops to 0.604 μW/% RH for the highest crystallite size sample (ZNR4). The presence of oxygen vacancies and the micro-porous nature of the film allow the absorption of water vapour on the film which deflects light at different angles that vary with the moisture content. The experimental results suggest that the ZNR film with a smaller crystallite size and larger pore diameter is more sensitive for humidity measurements. Further, an improved sensing performance is perceived in ZNRs because of the larger surface area of the nanorods. The ZNR based sensing elements do not suffer from ageing effects and exhibit high repeatability (88.74%). Further, the humidity sensor has a response time of 62 seconds and recovery time of 100 seconds which can be considered as a fairly quick response.

Viscoelastic response of fluid trapped between two dissimilar van der Waals surfaces

Employing grand canonical Monte-Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, the viscoelastic response of trapped fluid under molecularly thin confinement by walls having different wall-fluid interaction strengths, is investigated. With increase in slit asymmetry, given by the ratio of interaction strengths of the wall having strong wall-fluid interaction to that of the wall with weak wall-fluid interaction, a crossover in effective density of the fluid film, from rarer (R) to denser (D) than the bulk density is observed. Upon increasing asymmetry further, the dense fluid (F) layers undergo bond-orientational (S) ordering. The variation of viscoelastic relaxation time with scaled asymmetry shows a universal behavior, independent of slit width, with two distinct regimes. Below a critical value of asymmetry, the viscoelastic relaxation time is a slowly varying function of asymmetry, comparable with the structural relaxation time. Beyond the critical asymmetry, on the other hand, viscoelastic response time shows a sharp increase upon increasing asymmetry, deviating markedly from the structural relaxation time. Interestingly the critical asymmetry value is found to correlate with R to D crossover. The microscopic origin of the two-regime universal behavior of viscoelastic response time is found to stem from the fact that below critical asymmetry, the overall viscoelastic behaviour of the slit is dominated by that of the fast relaxing layer close to the weakly attracting surface, while above the critical asymmetry, the relaxation behaviour is guided by the dense fluid layer adjacent to the strongly attracting wall. In vicinity of fluid to ordering transition, the loss and storage moduli merge for low frequencies as in gel-like mechanical behaviour. The storage modulus takes over the loss modulus in the phase co-existence region even before the long ranged order sets in. Our findings bear important implications for fluid transport in hetero-structured geometry in nanotechnology.

Conversion of 2D MXene to Multi-Low-Dimensional GerMXene Superlattice Heterostructure

Integration of 2D structures into other low-dimensional materials results in the development of distinct van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHSs) with enhanced properties. However, obtaining 2D-1D-0D vdWHSs of technologically useful next generation materials, transition-metal carbide MXene and monoelemental Xene nanosheets in a single superlattice heterostructure is still challenging. Here, the fabrication of a new multidimensional superlattice heterostructure "GerMXene" from exfoliated M₃X₂T _x MXene and hydrogenated germanane (GeH) crystals, is reported. Direct experimental evidence for conversion of hydrothermally activated titanium carbide MXene (A-MXene) to GerMXene heterostructure through the rapid and spontaneous formation of titanium germanide (TiGe₂ and Ti₆Ge₅) bonds, is provided. The obtained GerMXene heterostructure possesses enhanced surface properties, aqueous dispersibility, and Dirac signature of embedded GeH nanosheets as well as quantum dots. GerMXene exhibits functional bioactivity, electrical conductivity, and negative surface charge, paving ways for its applications in biomedical field, electronics, and energy storage.

Interfacial π-π Interactions Induced Ultralight, 300 °C-Stable, Wideband Graphene/Polyaramid Foam for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption in Both Gigahertz and Terahertz Bands

High-performance electromagnetic wave-absorbing (EMA) materials used in high-temperature environments are of great importance in both civil and military fields. Herein, we have developed the ultralight graphene/polyaramid composite foam for wideband electromagnetic wave absorption in both gigahertz and terahertz bands, with a higher service temperature of 300 °C. It is found that strong interfacial π-π interactions are spontaneously constructed between graphene and polyaramids (PA), during the foam preparation process. This endows the foam with two advantages for its EMA performance. First, the π-π interactions trigger the interfacial polarization for enhanced microwave dissipation, as confirmed by the experimental and simulation results. The composite foam with an ultralow density (0.0038 g/cm³) shows a minimum reflection loss (RL) of -36.5 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 8.4 GHz between 2 and 18 GHz band. Meanwhile, excellent terahertz (THz) absorption is also achieved, with EAB covering the entire 0.2-1.6 THz range. Second, the interfacial π-π interactions promote PA to present a unique in-plane orientation configuration along the graphene surface, thus making PA the effective antioxidation barrier layer for graphene at high temperatures. The EMA performance of the foam could be completely preserved after 300 °C treatment in air atmosphere. Furthermore, the composite foam exhibits multifunctions, including good compressive, thermal insulating, and flame-retardant properties. We believe that this study could provide useful guidance for the design of next-generation EMA materials used in harsh environments.

Ultrahigh-Current-Density and Long-Term-Durability Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Hydrogen economy is imagined where excess electric energy from renewable sources stored directly by electrochemical water splitting into hydrogen is later used as clean hydrogen fuel. Electrocatalysts with the superhigh current density (1000 mA cm^-2 -level) and long-term durability (over 1000 h), especially at low overpotentials (<300 mV), seem extremely critical for green hydrogen from experiment to industrialization. Along the way, numerous innovative ideas are proposed to design high efficiency electrocatalysts in line with industrial requirements, which also stimulates the understanding of the mass/charge transfer and mechanical stability during the electrochemical process. It is of great necessity to summarize and sort out the accumulating knowledge in time for the development of laboratory to commercial use in this promising field. This review begins with examining the theoretical principles of achieving high-efficiency electrocatalysts with high current densities and excellent durability. Special attention is paid to acquaint efficient strategies to design perfect electrocatalysts including atomic structure regulation for electrical conductivity and reaction energy barrier, array configuration constructing for mass transfer process, and multiscale coupling for high mechanical strength. Finally, the importance and the personal perspective on future opportunities and challenges, is highlighted.

Heterointerface Engineering in Electromagnetic Absorbers: New Insights and Opportunities

Electromagnetic (EM) absorbers play an increasingly essential role in the electronic information age, even toward the coming "intelligent era". The remarkable merits of heterointerface engineering and its peculiar EM characteristics inject a fresh and infinite vitality for designing high-efficiency and stimuli-responsive EM absorbers. However, there still exist huge challenges in understanding and reinforcing these interface effects from the micro and macro perspectives. Herein, EM response mechanisms of interfacial effects are dissected in depth, and with a focus on advanced characterization as well as theoretical techniques. Then, the representative optimization strategies are systematically discussed with emphasis on component selection and structural design. More importantly, the most cutting-edge smart EM functional devices based on heterointerface engineering are reported. Finally, current challenges and concrete suggestions are proposed, and future perspectives on this promising field are also predicted.

Construction of Ni(CN)2 /NiSe2 Heterostructures by Stepwise Topochemical Pathways for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Exploiting effective electrocatalysts based on elaborate heterostructures for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been considered as a promising strategy for boosting water splitting efficiency to produce the clean energy-hydrogen. However, constructing catalytically active heterostructures with novel composition and architecture remains poorly developed due to the synthetic challenge. In this work, it is demonstrated that unique Ni(CN)₂ /NiSe₂ heterostructures, composed of single-crystalline Ni(CN)₂ nanoplates surrounded by crystallographically aligned NiSe₂ nanosatellites, can be created from nickel-based Hofmann-type coordination polymers through stepwise topochemical pathways. When employed as the OER electrocatalyst, the Ni(CN)₂ /NiSe₂ heterostructures show enhanced performance, which could be attributed to optimized geometric and electronic structures of the catalytic sites endowed by the synergy between the two components. This work demonstrates a rational synthetic route for creating a novel Ni-based OER electrocatalyst that possesses nanoscale heterostructure, whose composition, spatial organization, and interface configuration can be finely manipulated.

Facile Synthesis, Static, and Dynamic Magnetic Characteristics of Varying Size Double-Surfactant-Coated Mesoscopic Magnetic Nanoparticles Dispersed Stable Aqueous Magnetic Fluids

The present work reports the synthesis of a stable aqueous magnetic fluid (AMF) by dispersing double-surfactant-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in water using a facile ambient scalable wet chemical route. MNPs do not disperse well in water, resulting in low stability. This was improved by dispersing double-surfactant (oleic acid and sodium oleate)-coated MNPs in water, where cross-linking between the surfactants improves the stability of the AMFs. The stability was probed by rheological measurements and all the AMF samples showed a good long-term stability and stability against a gradient magnetic field. Further, the microwave spin resonance behavior of AMFs was studied in detail by corroborating the experimental results obtained from the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique to theoretical predictions by appropriate fittings. A broad spectrum was perceived for AMFs which indicates strong ferromagnetic characteristics. The resonance field shifted to higher magnetic field values with the decrease in particle size as larger-size MNPs magnetize and demagnetize more easily since their magnetic spins can align in the field direction more definitely. The FMR spectra was fitted to obtain various spin resonance parameters. The asymmetric shapes of the FMR spectra were observed with a decrease in particle sizes, which indicates an increase in relaxation time. The relaxation time increased with a decrease in particle sizes (sample A to D) from 37.2779 ps to 42.8301 ps. Further, a detailed investigation of the structural, morphological, and dc magnetic properties of the AMF samples was performed. Room temperature dc magnetic measurements confirmed the superparamagnetic (SPM) characteristics of the AMF and the M-H plot for each sample was fitted with a Langevin function to obtain the domain magnetization, permeability, and hydrodynamic diameter of the MNPs. The saturation magnetization and coercivity of the AMF samples increased with the increase in dispersed MNPs' size of the samples. The improvement in the stability and magnetic characteristics makes AMFs suitable candidates for various biomedical applications such as drug delivery, magnetic fluid hyperthermia, and biomedicines.

Atomically Thin Materials for Next-Generation Rechargeable Batteries

Atomically thin materials (ATMs) with thicknesses in the atomic scale (typically <5 nm) offer inherent advantages of large specific surface areas, proper crystal lattice distortion, abundant surface dangling bonds, and strong in-plane chemical bonds, making them ideal 2D platforms to construct high-performance electrode materials for rechargeable metal-ion batteries, metal-sulfur batteries, and metal-air batteries. This work reviews the synthesis and electronic property tuning of state-of-the-art ATMs, including graphene and graphene derivatives (GE/GO/rGO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), phosphorene, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides (MXenes), transition metal oxides (TMOs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for constructing next-generation high-energy-density and high-power-density rechargeable batteries to meet the needs of the rapid developments in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and smart electricity grids. We also present our viewpoints on future challenges and opportunities of constructing efficient ATMs for next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Graphene-Based Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Capacitors: A Review

Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) are attracting increasing attention because of their potential to bridge the electrochemical performance gap between batteries and supercapacitors. However, the commercial application of current LICs is still impeded by their inferior energy density, which is mainly due to the low capacity of the cathode. Therefore, tremendous efforts have been made in developing novel cathode materials with high capacity and excellent rate capability. Graphene-based nanomaterials have been recognized as one of the most promising cathodes for LICs due to their unique properties, and exciting progress has been achieved. Herein, in this review, the recent advances of graphene-based cathode materials for LICs are systematically summarized. Especially, the synthesis method, structure characterization and electrochemical performance of various graphene-based cathodes are comprehensively discussed and compared. Furthermore, their merits and limitations are also emphasized. Finally, a summary and outlook are presented to highlight some challenges of graphene-based cathode materials in the future applications of LICs.
