Abstract
Mental health conditions are up to 2 to 3 times more common across a woman's lifespan depending on the condition, making it important to screen for these conditions and be aware of key treatment differences compared to men. Abstract
The influence of chromosomal sex on human diseases is recognized but underresearched, particularly in diseases with early developmental origins. Copy number variations (CNVs) from sex chromosomes or autosomes, which cause different gene expressions, may influence the disease preferences in females and males. Chromosomal microarray is a standard method for detecting CNVs, with a diagnostic yield of approximately 15 % among patients with congenital anomalies and neurodevelopmental disorders, the primary indications for the analysis. Here, we explore sex disparities in phenotype prevalence and CNV detection rates in patients referred for chromosomal microarray to identify sex-biased traits and CNVs. Our cohort comprises 1412 patients, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.6 to 1. Despite being outnumbered, females are significantly more likely to receive a genetic diagnosis through this type of molecular karyotyping. Most of the patients have neurodevelopmental disorders with other comorbidities. Females have a higher frequency of comorbidities, but the difference in diagnostic yield is significant only in the groups with simpler phenotypes (≤2 comorbidities). Higher diagnostic yield is revealed for congenital heart disease, urogenital anomalies, and the autism spectrum group. All three categories show populational preponderance in males, supporting a higher threshold liability model in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex mental disorder that typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood. The underlying molecular mechanisms of SCZ remain unclear. There is growing evidence supporting the involvement of abnormalities in metabolic and endocrine systems in the pathophysiology of SCZ. Our study was designed to explore the interrelationship between gonadal hormones and glucose metabolism in patients with SCZ. METHODS One hundred and twenty-four female first-episode patients diagnosed with SCZ according to DSM-IV were recruited. The glucose metabolism parameters, including fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance index were measured. In addition, gonadal hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone were also determined in the same group of patients. RESULTS Abnormal glucose metabolism and sex hormones were observed in female DNFES patients, with a particularly high rate of insulin resistance (49.6 %). Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between glucose metabolic disturbance and sex hormones (all p < 0.05). Moreover, regression analysis adjusted for age, waist circumference, and BMI revealed that estradiol was negatively correlated with fasting insulin in female patients (β = -0.37, t = -4.0, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION These results provide evidence supporting the presence of disturbance in glucose metabolism and gonadal hormones at the onset of SCZ in female patients, suggesting that these dysregulations interact with each other to be involved in the disease's pathophysiological process.

Abstract
Neurodevelopmental mechanisms are increasingly implicated in bipolar disorder (BD), highlighting the importance of their study in young persons. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated a central role for frontotemporal corticolimbic brain systems that subserve processing and regulation of emotions, and processing of reward in adults with BD. As adolescence and young adulthood (AYA) is a time when fully syndromal BD often emerges, and when these brain systems undergo dynamic maturational changes, the AYA epoch is implicated as a critical period in the neurodevelopment of BD. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies can be especially informative in identifying the functional neuroanatomy in adolescents and young adults with BD (BDAYA) and at high risk for BD (HR-BDAYA) that is related to acute mood states and trait vulnerability to the disorder. The identification of early emerging brain differences, trait- and state-based, can contribute to the elucidation of the developmental neuropathophysiology of BD, and to the generation of treatment and prevention targets. In this critical review, fMRI studies of BDAYA and HR-BDAYA are discussed, and a preliminary neurodevelopmental model is presented based on a convergence of literature that suggests early emerging dysfunction in subcortical (e.g., amygdalar, striatal, thalamic) and caudal and ventral cortical regions, especially ventral prefrontal cortex (vPFC) and insula, and connections among them, persisting as trait-related features. More rostral and dorsal cortical alterations, and bilaterality progress later, with lateralization, and direction of functional imaging findings differing by mood state. Altered functioning of these brain regions, and regions they are strongly connected to, are implicated in the range of symptoms seen in BD, such as the insula in interoception, precentral gyrus in motor changes, and prefrontal cortex in cognition. Current limitations, and outlook on the future use of neuroimaging evidence to inform interventions and prevent the onset of mood episodes in BDAYA, are outlined.

Abstract
Differences in the patterning of genetic sharing between groups of individuals may arise from biological pathways, social mechanisms, phenotyping and ascertainment. We expand genomic structural equation modeling to allow for testing genomic structural invariance (GSI), that is, the formal comparison of multivariate genetic architecture across groups. We apply GSI to compare the autosomal multivariate genetic architecture of eight psychiatric disorders spanning three factors (psychotic, neurodevelopmental and internalizing) between cisgender males and females. We find that the genetic factor structure is largely similar across sex, permitting meaningful comparisons of associations at the level of the factors. However, in females, problematic alcohol use and posttraumatic stress disorder loaded more strongly on the internalizing factor, while the neurodevelopmental disorder factor exhibited weaker genetic correlations with the other factors. Four phenotypes (educational attainment, insomnia, smoking and deprivation) showed significant, albeit small, sex-differentiated associations with the psychotic factor. As genome-wide association study samples grow and diversify, GSI will become increasingly valuable for comparing multivariate genetic architecture across groups.

Abstract
Cerebral lateralisation is a core organising principle of the brain that is characterised by a complex pattern of hemispheric specialisations and interhemispheric interactions. In various mental disorders, functional and/or structural hemispheric asymmetries are changed compared to healthy controls, and these alterations may contribute to the primary symptoms and cognitive impairments of a specific disorder. Since multiple genetic and epigenetic factors influence both the pathogenesis of mental illness and the development of brain asymmetries, it is likely that the neural developmental pathways overlap or are even causally intertwined, although the timing, magnitude, and direction of interactions may vary depending on the specific disorder. However, the underlying developmental steps and neuronal mechanisms are still unclear. In this review article, we briefly summarise what we know about structural, functional, and developmental relationships and outline hypothetical connections, which could be investigated in appropriate animal models. Altered cerebral asymmetries may causally contribute to the development of the structural and/or functional features of a disorder, as neural mechanisms that trigger neuropathogenesis are embedded in the asymmetrical organisation of the developing brain. Therefore, the occurrence and severity of impairments in neural processing and cognition probably cannot be understood independently of the development of the lateralised organisation of intra- and interhemispheric neuronal networks. Conversely, impaired cellular processes can also hinder favourable asymmetry development and lead to cognitive deficits in particular.

Abstract
Neurodevelopmental disorders disproportionately affect males compared to females. The biological mechanisms of this male susceptibility or female protection have not been identified. There is evidence that fetal/neonatal gonadal hormones, which play a pivotal role in many aspects of development, may contribute. Here, we investigate the effects of excess testosterone during a critical period of sex-specific brain organization on social approach and fear learning behaviors in C57BL/6J wild-type mice. Male, but not female, mice treated with testosterone on the day of birth (PN0) exhibited decreased social approach as juveniles and decreased contextual fear memory as adults, compared to vehicle-treated controls. These deficits were not driven by anxiety-like behavior or changes in locomotion or body weight. Mice treated with the same dose of testosterone on postnatal day 18 (PN18), which is outside of the critical period of brain masculinization, did not demonstrate impairments compared to the vehicle group. These findings indicate that excess testosterone during a critical period of early development, but not shortly after, induces long-term deficits relevant to the male sex bias in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was aimed at identifying sex differences in patients presenting a first episode mania (FEM) or psychosis (FEP) to help shaping early treatment strategies focused on sex differences. METHODS Patients with a FEM or FEP underwent a clinical, neuropsychological (neurocognitive functions and emotional intelligence) and functional assessment. Performance on those variables was compared between groups through general linear model, with sex and group (FEM vs FEP) as main effects and group by sex interactions. RESULTS The total sample included 113 patients: FEM = 72 (45.83 % females) and FEP = 41 (46.34 % females). There were significant main effects for group (not for sex) for most of the clinical features (depressive, negative and positive symptoms) and psychosocial functioning (χ2 = 8.815, p = 0.003). As for neuropsychological performance, there were significant main effects for sex and group. Females performed better than males in verbal memory (χ2 = 9.038, p = 0.003) and obtained a higher emotional intelligence quotient (χ2 = 13.20, p < 0.001). On the contrary, males obtained better results in working memory (χ2 = 7.627, p = 0.006). FEP patients significantly underperformed FEM patients in most cognitive domains. There were significant group by sex interactions for few neuropsychological variables, namely processing speed (χ2 = 4.559, p = 0.033) and verbal fluency (χ2 = 8.913, p = 0.003). LIMITATIONS Differences between sexes were evaluated, but the influence of gender was not considered. Retrospective evaluation of prodromes and substance use. No healthy control group comparator. CONCLUSION The main finding is the presence of significant sex effect and group by sex interaction on specific neurocognitive cognition and emotional intelligence measures. Tailored sex-based early treatment strategies might be implemented.

Abstract
Significant amounts of research have been devoted to treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the understanding of its fear and stress-related symptoms. However, current interventions are only effective in 60 % of the patient population. Allopregnanolone has become a topic of interest for PTSD due to its influences on inhibitory neurotransmission and the physiological stress response. This review explores available literature that suggests that allopregnanolone has an influence on (a) chronic stress and anxiety-like symptoms, (b) fear conditioning and contextual fear, and (c) intrusive and emotional memories. A relationship between allopregnanolone and PTSD is suggested, postulating that allopregnanolone is a potential target for the treatment of PTSD. This very exciting prospect calls for the expansion of research investigating a direct relationship between allopregnanolone and PTSD.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of ovarian hormones on dopaminergic regulation of prepulse inhibition (PPI), a measure of sensorimotor gating deficient in schizophrenia and other psychiatric illnesses. Either in adulthood (11 weeks of age) or adolescence (5 weeks of age), female mice underwent ovariectomy (OVX) and were implanted with 17β-estradiol, progesterone, or a combination of these hormones. All mice were tested in adulthood for the acute effect of the dopamine receptor agonist, apomorphine, on PPI. Apomorphine treatment reduced PPI in intact mice and this effect was blocked after OVX in adulthood. A low dose implant of 17β-estradiol prevented this OVX effect and reinstated apomorphine-induced PPI disruption. Following adolescent OVX, the effect of apomorphine was not altered and it significantly reduced PPI in adulthood. A low dose implant of 17β-estradiol following adolescent OVX effect blocked apomorphine-induced PPI disruption in adulthood. Apomorphine had no effect on PPI in any of the mice treated with the high dose of 17β-estradiol or a combination of low-dose 17β-estradiol and progesterone, irrespective of treatment age, suggesting an antipsychotic action. Apomorphine tended to disrupt PPI in mice treated with progesterone only, irrespective of age of OVX. These results suggest that in adult mice, circulating 17β-estradiol and progesterone play an important role in dopaminergic regulation of PPI. This role may develop during adolescence as similar effects of OVX and ovarian hormones were not observed following interventions in 5-week old mice. Our results also confirm and extend previous evidence that 17β-estradiol may have antipsychotic properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gonadal hormones have been reported to be involved in the molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia (SCH). However, only a few studies have examined the gonadal hormone dysfunctions in first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients, in particular in young patients with SCH. This study was designed to investigate the sex differences in gonadal hormones in young and antipsychotic-naïve FES patients. METHODS One hundred and sixty-two patients with SCH and 74 healthy controls were recruited, and blood gonadal hormones, including estradiol (E2), follicular-stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone (PROG), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone (TESTO), were measured in young FES patients and controls. RESULTS We found that both male and female young FES patients showed gonadal hormone disturbances at the onset of psychosis. Male patients exhibited a significantly higher rate of abnormal E2 (25.6% vs 3.9%), while female patients had higher rates of abnormal FSH (0% vs 5.3%), PROG (0% vs 21.1%), LH (3.5% vs 17.1%), and TESTO (3.5% vs 13.2%) (all P < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis further identified that specific gonadal hormone indices, including E2, LH, and TESTO, were factors associated with sex differences in young FES patients, after controlling for age, smoking status, and body mass index. CONCLUSIONS Our study reveals an overall gonadal hormone imbalance in young antipsychotic-naïve FES patients, highlighting sex differences at the onset of psychosis. Our study provides a foundation for further research into the role of gonadal hormones in the pathophysiology of SCH and the potential for personalized medicine approaches based on hormonal balance. Future studies were warranted to explore these differences and their implications for clinical practice to improve the treatment outcomes for individuals suffering from SCH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Past research has highlighted that bipolar I disorder is associated with significant changes in brain structure and function. Notably, the manifestation and progression of bipolar I disorder have been known to differ between males and females. However, the relationship between sex-related differences and bipolar I disorder diagnosis affecting these changes was not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the sex-by-diagnosis interactions concerning the structural and functional features of the brain in individuals with bipolar I disorder. METHODS Both structural and functional MRI data were obtained from 105 individuals with bipolar I disorder (36 males and 69 females) and 210 healthy controls (72 males and 138 females). Voxel-wise analyses of gray matter volume and functional connectivity were conducted using a general linear regression model. This model included age, sex, diagnosis, and a sex-by-diagnosis interaction as predictors to explore potential sex-related differences in the brain features of participants with bipolar I disorder. RESULTS The gray matter volume analysis revealed significant sex-by-diagnosis interactions in six brain regions: the left caudate (p < 0.001), left thalamus (p < 0.001), right caudate (p = 0.003), right thalamus (p < 0.001), left anterior cingulate gyrus (p = 0.022), and left middle/posterior cingulate gyrus (p = 0.015). Using these regions as seeds, we detected a significant sex-by-diagnosis interaction in the functional connectivity alteration between the left thalamus and right angular gyrus (p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS Our findings revealed a noteworthy sex-by-diagnosis interaction, with male individuals with bipolar I disorder displaying larger gray matter volume and altered functional connectivity in the limbic system compared to female individuals with bipolar I disorder and healthy participants. These results hint at potential sex-related differences in the pathophysiology of the limbic system in bipolar I disorder, which may have significant implications for understanding the underlying mechanisms in bipolar I disorder. Our findings could contribute to developing more personalized treatment approaches for individuals with bipolar I disorder.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The diagnostic conversion of major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder (BD) is a topic that is currently the subject of several studies. However, there are few studies that clarify the interaction between conversion, substance use and biomarkers. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate serum biomarker levels and lifetime substance use as predictors for diagnostic conversion from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder in an outpatient sample of adults. METHODS This was a prospective longitudinal study nested within a larger two-phase study. Male and female individuals, between the ages of 18 and 60, diagnosed with MDD by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview Plus who participated in the two stages of the study were included. The instrument alcohol smoking and substance involvement screening test (ASSIST) was used to evaluate substance use. The enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA) technique was used to measure the levels of the following biomarkers: brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). RESULTS The conversion rate from MDD to BD was 12.4%. The prevalence of female individuals, subjects with up to eight years of schooling, who had lifetime psychotic symptoms and reported lifetime use of cocaine was higher among individuals who converted their diagnosis to BD than among individuals who did not (P<0.05). In the crude analysis, there was no interaction between biomarkers and substance use except for NGF with cocaine. Based on the adjusted analysis model, it was observed that the interaction remains (OR: 1.476; 95% CI: 1.019-2.137). CONCLUSIONS Individuals with late diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder may have a worse prognosis. Therefore, results suggesting that NGF and cocaine use are potential predictors of conversion to bipolar disorder can help in clinical practice, contributing to the identification of conversion and to more specific therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Background Epidemiological studies have frequently shown the concurrence of chronic pain with symptoms of anxiety and depression, particularly in women. Animal models are useful to understand the complex mechanisms underlying comorbidities, but the wide range of methods employed and the wealth of evidence sometimes impedes effective translation and reproducibility. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding the influence of variables such as sex and species on anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in rodent models of neuropathic pain. Methods Following PROSPERO registration, we searched EMBASE, Scopus, and the Web of Science from their inception to November 24, 2023, identifying 126 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The Hedges' g value for each experiment and study was calculated, and further subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed. Results Neuropathic pain significantly reduced the time that rats and mice spent in the open arms of the elevated plus and zero mazes (g = -1.14), time spent in the center of the open field (g = -1.12), sucrose consumption in the sucrose preference test (g = -1.43), and grooming time in the splash test (g = -1.37) while increasing latency to feed in the novelty-suppressed feeding test (g = 1.59) and immobility in the forced swimming (g = 1.85) and tail suspension (g = 1.91) tests. Sex differences were observed, with weaker effects in female than in male rodents for several behavioral paradigms, and funnel plots identified positive publication bias in the literature. Conclusions This meta-analysis emphasizes the effect of neuropathic pain on anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in rodents, highlighting the importance of investigating sex differences in future experimental studies.

Abstract
Increasing rates of child neurodevelopmental vulnerability are a significant public health challenge. The adverse effect of socioeconomic adversity on offspring cognition may be mediated through elevated prenatal maternal systemic inflammation, but the role of modifiable antecedents such as maternal nutrition has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to examine (1) whether prenatal factors, with an emphasis on maternal nutrition, were associated with prenatal maternal systemic inflammation at 28 weeks' gestation, including the metabolomic marker glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA); (2) the extent to which the association between prenatal maternal nutrition and child cognition and language at age two years was mediated by elevated maternal inflammation in pregnancy; (3) the extent to which the associations between prenatal socioeconomic adversity and child neurodevelopment were mediated through prenatal maternal nutrition and GlycA levels. We used a prospective population-derived pre-birth longitudinal cohort study, the Barwon Infant Study (Barwon region of Victoria, Australia), where 1074 mother-child pairs were recruited by 28 weeks' gestation using an unselected sampling frame. Exposures included prenatal factors such as maternal diet measured by a validated food frequency questionnaire at 28 weeks' gestation and dietary patterns determined by principal component analysis. The main outcome measures were maternal inflammatory biomarkers (GlycA and hsCRP levels) at 28 weeks' gestation, and offspring Bayley-III cognition and language scores at age two years. Results showed that the 'modern wholefoods' and 'processed' maternal dietary patterns were independently associated with reduced and elevated maternal inflammation respectively (GlycA or hsCRP p < 0.001), and also with higher and reduced offspring Bayley-III scores respectively (cognition p ≤ 0.004, language p ≤ 0.009). Associations between dietary patterns and offspring cognition and language were partially mediated by higher maternal GlycA (indirect effect: cognition p ≤ 0.036, language p ≤ 0.05), but were less evident for hsCRP. The maternal dietary patterns mediated 22 % of the association between socioeconomic adversity (lower maternal education and/or lower household income vs otherwise) and poorer offspring cognition (indirect effect p = 0.001). Variation in prenatal GlycA levels that were independent of these dietary measures appeared less important. In conclusion, modifiable prenatal maternal dietary patterns were associated with adverse child neurocognitive outcomes through their effect on maternal inflammation (GlycA). Maternal diet may partially explain the association between socioeconomic adversity and child neurocognitive vulnerability. Maternal diet-by-inflammation pathways are an attractive target for future intervention studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the current literature the influence of sex on the clinical presentation of the bipolar disorder (BD) in adults has been indicated. It was of the interest whether such a phenomenon is also present in the pediatric population. METHODS The authors collected retrospective clinical data in 288 patients hospitalized on the psychiatry ward aged 10-17 years; 80.2 % females and 19.8 % males. RESULTS No sex differences were observed in the age of onset, the time from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of BD, the number of symptoms during hospital stay, or family history of psychiatric disorder (U Mann-Whitney's p > 0.05). In males the most frequently recorded first episode of BD was mania or hypomania (51 %), and in females, a depressive episode (51 %). The main reason for the hospitalization in boys was episodes of mania (63 %), then mixed episodes (30 %), and depression (7 %). Whereas girls were most often hospitalized due to mixed episodes (52 %), less frequently depression (22 %), and mania (26 %). Co-morbid psychiatric disorders were found more often in boys than in girls (63 % vs 45 %; χ2p-value>0.05). The co-occurrence of the dissocial personality, borderline, tic disorders, pervasive developmental disorders and hyperkinetic disorders was different in both sexes. LIMITATIONS The main limitations of the study are the very high proportion of female subjects and the retrospective character of the study. CONCLUSIONS It seems that the clinical presentation of BD in the pediatric population can somewhat depend on the sex of the patients.

Abstract
Background Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic, disabling mental illness that may require recurrent hospitalisation. The length of hospital stay (LOS) for BD patients is variable, and literature suggests that this is because of clinical and socio-demographic factors. Aim To determine the average LOS for patients admitted for BD at a hospital and its relation to clinical and socio-demographic factors. Setting A public tertiary hospital in South Africa. Methods Clinical and socio-demographic data were obtained from a retrospective record review of patient admissions at a hospital over 1 year. Length of hospital stay, defined as the duration between admission and discharge date, and other variables were retrieved. Results A total of 215 patients were admitted during the study period. The mean LOS was 30 days. The mean age of the patients was 35.9 years (standard deviation [s.d.] = 12.4, range 18-72 years). There were similar numbers of males and females admitted. Significantly more patients were not married (p < 0.001), unemployed (p < 0.001), and had a history of substance use (p < 0.001). Employed patients were 2.5 times more likely to have a short stay than those unemployed (p = 0.03). There was a statistically significant association between the number of comorbidities and LOS. Conclusion The study findings align with the literature's results. The median length of stay was 25 days and was impacted by socio-demographic but not clinical factors. Contribution The study provided insight into the impact of variable factors in LOS for BD patients.

Abstract
Gender differences in the onset age of schizophrenia have been reported in many studies, but differences in the age of the first hospitalization and associated factors have not been explored. The present study investigated gender differences and clinical correlates in the age of the first hospitalization in drug-naïve schizophrenia (DNS). A total of 144 DNS patients and 67 health controls were included. Demographic information, duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) scores, the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) scores, Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scores, and MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) scores were collected and analyzed. The age of the first hospitalization was significantly earlier in males than in females (P < 0.01). In addition, there were significant differences in the age of the first hospitalization in terms of marital status, occupation, family ranking, suicide attempt, and place of residence (all P < 0.05). After Bonferroni correction, only DUP had a positive correlation with the age of the first hospitalization (PBonferroni < 0.05/6 = 0.0083). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that gender (β = 0.141, t = 2.434, P = 0.016), marital status (β = 0.219, t = 3.463, P = 0.001), family ranking (β = 0.300, t = 4.918, P < 0.001), suicide attempt (β = 0.348, t = 5.549, P < 0.001), and DUP (β = 0.190, t = 2.969, P < 0.004) positively predicted the age of the first hospitalization. The age of the first hospitalization in male DNS was earlier than in females. In addition, gender, marital status, suicide attempt, DUP, and family rank were independent risk factors for the age of the first hospitalization.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that impairs a person's mental, social, and emotional faculties gradually. Detection in the early stages with an accurate diagnosis is crucial to remedying the patients. This study proposed a new method to classify schizophrenia disease in the rest state based on neurologic signals achieved from the brain by electroencephalography (EEG). The datasets used consisted of 28 subjects, 14 for each group, which are schizophrenia and healthy control. The data was collected from the scalps with 19 EEG channels using a 250 Hz frequency. Due to the brain signal variation, we have decomposed the EEG signals into five sub-bands using a band-pass filter, ensuring the best signal clarity and eliminating artifacts. This work was performed with several scenarios: First, traditional techniques were applied. Secondly, augmented data (additive white Gaussian noise and stretched signals) were utilized. Additionally, we assessed Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (MRMR) as the features reduction method. All these data scenarios are applied with three different window sizes (epochs): 1, 2, and 5 s, utilizing six algorithms to extract features: Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Approximate Entropy (ApEn), Log Energy entropy (LogEn), Shannon Entropy (ShnEn), and kurtosis. The L2-normalization method was applied to the derived features, positively affecting the results. In terms of classification, we applied four algorithms: K-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), and ensemble classifier (EC). From all the scenarios, our evaluation showed that SVM had remarkable results in all evaluation metrics with LogEn features utilizing a 1-s window size, impacting the diagnosis of Schizophrenia disease. This indicates that an accurate diagnosis of schizophrenia can be achieved through the right features and classification model selection. Finally, we contrasted our results to recently published works using the same and a different dataset, where our method showed a notable improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Air pollution is ubiquitous, yet questions remain regarding its impact on the developing brain. Large changes occur in white matter microstructure across adolescence, with notable differences by sex. METHODS We investigate sex-stratified effects of annual exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) at ages 9-10 years on longitudinal patterns of white matter microstructure over a 2-year period. Diffusion-weighted imaging was collected on 3T MRI scanners for 8182 participants (1-2 scans per subject; 45% with two scans) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study®. Restriction spectrum imaging was performed to quantify intracellular isotropic (RNI) and directional (RND) diffusion. Ensemble-based air pollution concentrations were assigned to each child's primary residential address. Multi-pollutant, sex-stratified linear mixed-effect models assessed associations between pollutants and RNI/RND with age over time, adjusting for sociodemographic factors. RESULTS Here we show higher PM2.5 exposure is associated with higher RND at age 9 in both sexes, with no significant effects of PM2.5 on RNI/RND change over time. Higher NO2 exposure is associated with higher RNI at age 9 in both sexes, as well as attenuating RNI over time in females. Higher O3 exposure is associated with differences in RND and RNI at age 9, as well as changes in RND and RNI over time in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS Criteria air pollutants influence patterns of white matter maturation between 9-13 years old, with some sex-specific differences in the magnitude and anatomical locations of affected tracts. This occurs at concentrations that are below current U.S. standards, suggesting exposure to low-level pollution during adolescence may have long-term consequences.

Abstract
Evolutionary biology provides a unifying theory for testing hypotheses about the relationship between hormones and person perception. Person perception usually receives attention from the perspective of sexual selection. However, because person perception is one trait in a suite regulated by hormones, univariate approaches are insufficient. In this Perspectives article, quantitative genetics is presented as an important but underutilized framework for testing evolutionary hypotheses within this literature. We note tacit assumptions within the current literature on psychiatric genetics, which imperil the interpretation of findings thus far. As regulators of a diverse manifold of traits, hormones mediate tradeoffs among an array of functions. Hormonal pleiotropy also provides the basis of correlational selection, a process whereby selection on one trait in a hormone-mediated suite generates selection on the others. This architecture provides the basis for conflicts between sexual and natural selection within hormone-mediated suites. Due to its role in person perception, psychiatric disorders, and reproductive physiology, the sex hormone estrogen is highlighted as an exemplar here. The implications of this framework for the evolution of person perception are discussed. Empirical quantification of selection on traits within hormone-mediated suites remains an important gap in this literature with great potential to illuminate the fundamental nature of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Although a growing number of studies have investigated the relationship between psychosocial factors and periodontitis, studies investigating the association between bipolar disorder (BD) and periodontitis are lacking. Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 4251 adolescents with BD and 17,004 age- and sex-matched controls were included. They were followed up from enrollment to the end of 2011 or death. Periodontitis was diagnosed during the follow-up. Cox regression analysis indicated that adolescents with BD had a higher risk of periodontitis (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.96, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.77-3.17) than did controls. Subanalyses stratified by sex revealed a higher risk of periodontitis in male (HR: 2.83, 95% CI 2.56-3.14) and female (HR: 3.01, 95% CI 2.74-3.30) adolescents with BD than their respective controls. The long-term use of mood stabilizers was associated with a higher risk of periodontitis (HR: 1.19, 95% CI 1.06-1.35) in the BD cohort. Our study highlighted an increased risk of periodontitis in adolescents with BD compared with controls during the follow-up. We recommend that more attention should be paid to the prevention of periodontitis in adolescents with BD, especially those who are female or receiving mood stabilizers.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to characterize the properties of locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic neurons in male and female mice. We also sought to investigate sex-specific differences in membrane properties, action potential generation, and protein expression profiles to understand the mechanisms underlying neuronal excitability variations. METHODS Utilizing a genetic mouse model by crossing Dbhcre knock-in mice with tdTomato Ai14 transgenic mice, LC neurons were identified using fluorescence microscopy. Neuronal functional properties were assessed using patch-clamp recordings. Proteomic analyses of individual LC neuron soma was conducted using mass spectrometry to discern protein expression profiles. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD045844. RESULTS Female LC noradrenergic neurons displayed greater membrane capacitance than those in male mice. Male LC neurons demonstrated greater spontaneous and evoked action potential generation compared to females. Male LC neurons exhibited a lower rheobase and achieved higher peak frequencies with similar current injections. Proteomic analysis revealed differences in protein expression profiles between sexes, with male mice displaying a notably larger unique protein set compared to females. Notably, pathways pertinent to protein synthesis, degradation, and recycling, such as EIF2 and glucocorticoid receptor signaling, showed reduced expression in females. CONCLUSIONS Male LC noradrenergic neurons exhibit higher intrinsic excitability compared to those from females. The discernible sex-based differences in excitability could be ascribed to varying protein expression profiles, especially within pathways that regulate protein synthesis and degradation. This study lays the groundwork for future studies focusing on the interplay between proteomics and neuronal function examined in individual cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The transition from childhood to adolescence is characterized by enhanced neural plasticity and a consequent susceptibility to both beneficial and adverse aspects of one's milieu. METHODS To understand the implications of the interplay between protective and risk-enhancing factors, we analyzed longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (n = 834; 394 female). We probed the maturational correlates of positive lifestyle variables (friendships, parental warmth, school engagement, physical exercise, healthy nutrition) and genetic vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders (major depressive disorder, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) and sought to further elucidate their implications for psychological well-being. RESULTS Genetic risk factors and lifestyle buffers showed divergent relationships with later attentional and interpersonal problems. These effects were mediated by distinguishable functional neurodevelopmental deviations spanning the limbic, default mode, visual, and control systems. More specifically, greater genetic vulnerability was associated with alterations in the normative maturation of areas rich in dopamine (D2), glutamate, and serotonin receptors and of areas with stronger expression of astrocytic and microglial genes, a molecular signature implicated in the brain disorders discussed here. Greater availability of lifestyle buffers predicted deviations in the normative functional development of higher density GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acidergic) receptor regions. The two profiles of neurodevelopmental alterations showed complementary roles in protection against psychopathology, which varied with environmental stress levels. CONCLUSIONS Our results underscore the importance of educational involvement and healthy nutrition in attenuating the neurodevelopmental sequelae of genetic risk factors. They also underscore the importance of characterizing early-life biomarkers associated with adult-onset pathologies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effects of body mass index (BMI) on the core symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD) and its implications for disease trajectory are largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE To examine whether BMI impacted hospitalization rate, medical and psychiatric comorbidities, and core symptom domains such as depression and suicidality in BD. METHODS Participants (15 years and older) were 2790 BD outpatients enrolled in the longitudinal STEP-BD study; all met DSM-IV criteria for BD-I, BD-II, cyclothymia, BD NOS, or schizoaffective disorder, bipolar subtype. BMI, demographic information, psychiatric and medical comorbidities, and other clinical variables such as bipolarity index, history of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and history of suicide attempts were collected at baseline. Longitudinal changes in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score, Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) score, and hospitalizations during the study were also assessed. Depending on the variable of interest, odds-ratios, regression analyses, factor analyses, and graph analyses were applied. RESULTS A robust increase in psychiatric and medical comorbidities was observed, particularly for baseline BMIs >35. A significant relationship was noted between higher BMI and history of suicide attempts, and individuals with BMIs >40 had the highest prevalence of suicide attempts. Obese and overweight individuals had a higher bipolarity index (a questionnaire measuring disease severity) and were more likely to have received ECT. Higher BMIs correlated with worsening trajectory of core depression symptoms and with worsening lassitude and inability to feel. CONCLUSIONS In BD participants, elevated BMI was associated with worsening clinical features, including higher rates of suicidality, comorbidities, and core depression symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data on trends in the epidemiological burden of bipolar disorder are scarce. AIMS To provide an overview of trends in bipolar disorder burden from 1990 to 2019. METHOD Revisiting the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we analysed the number of cases, calculated the age-standardised rate (per 100 000 population) and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of incidence, prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) for bipolar disorder from 1990 to 2019. The independent effects of age, period and cohort were estimated by the age-period-cohort modelling. RESULTS Globally, the bipolar disorder-related prevalent cases, incident cases and number of YLDs all increased from 1990 to 2019. Regionally, the World Health Organization Region of the Americas accounted for the highest estimated YLD number and rate, with the highest age-standardised prevalence rate in 1990 and 2019 and highest EAPC of prevalence. By sociodemographic index (SDI) quintiles, all five SDI regions saw an increase in estimated incident cases. Nationally, New Zealand reported the highest age-standardised rate of incidence, prevalence and YLDs in 1990 and 2019. The most prominent age effect on incidence rate was in those aged 15-19 years. Decreased effects of period on incidence, prevalence and YLD rates was observed overall and in females, not in males. The incidence, prevalence and YLD rates showed an unfavourable trend in the younger cohorts born after 1990, with males reporting a higher cohort risk than females. CONCLUSIONS From 1990 to 2019, the overall trend of bipolar disorder burden presents regional and national variations and differs by age, sex, period and cohort.

Abstract
CA1 and CA3 pyramidal neurons are the major sources of hippocampal efferents. The structural features of these neurons are presumed to be involved in various normal/abnormal cognitive and emotional outcomes by influencing the pattern of synaptic inputs and neuronal signal processing. Although many studies have described hippocampal structure differences between males and females, these reports mainly focused on gross anatomical features in adult or aged models, and such distinctions on neuronal morphology and dendritic spine density during adolescence, a period of high vulnerability to neurodevelopmental disorders, have received much less attention. In this work, we analyzed dendritic architecture and density of spines in CA1 and CA3 neurons of male and female rats in early adolescence (postnatal day, PND 40) and compared them with those in late adolescence/young adulthood (PND 60). On PND 40, CA1 neurons of male rats showed more Sholl intersections and spine density in apical and basal dendrites compared to those in females. The Sholl intersections in basal dendrites of CA3 neurons were also more in males, whereas the number of apical dendrite intersections was not significantly different between sexes. In male rats, there was a notable decrease in the number of branch and terminal points in the basal dendrite of CA1 neurons of young adults when compared to their sex-matched adolescent rats. On the other hand, CA1 neurons in young adult females also showed more Sholl intersections in apical and basal dendrites compared to adolescent females. Meanwhile, the total cable length, the number of branches, and terminal points of apical dendrites in CA3 neurons also exhibited a significant reduction in young adult male rats compared to their sex-matched adolescents. In young adult rats, both apical and basal dendrites of CA3 neurons in males showed fewer intersections with Sholl circles, but there were no significant differences in dendritic spine density or count estimation between males and females. On the other hand, young adult female rats had more Sholl intersections and dendritic spine count on the basal dendrites of CA3 neurons compared to adolescent females. Although no significant sex- and age-dependent difference in neuronal density was detected in CA1 and CA3 subareas, CA3 pyramidal neurons of both male and female rats showed reduced soma area compared to adolescent rats. Our findings show that the sex differences in the dendritic structure of CA1 and CA3 neurons vary by age and also by the compartments of dendritic arbors. Such variations in the morphology of hippocampal pyramidal neurons may take part as a basis for normal cognitive and affective differences between the sexes, as well as distinct sensitivity to interfering factors and the prevalence of neuropsychological diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-traumatic stress has been identified as a frequent long-term complication in survivors of critical illnesses after sepsis. Little is known about long-term trajectories of post-traumatic stress and potentially modifiable risk factors following the ICU stay. Study objective was to explore and compare different clinical trajectories of post-traumatic stress symptoms in sepsis survivors up to two years after discharge from ICU. METHODS Data on post-traumatic stress symptoms by means of the Post-traumatic Symptom Scale (PTSS-10) were collected in sepsis survivors at one, six, 12 and 24 months after discharge from ICU. Data on chronic psychiatric diagnoses prior ICU were derived from the primary care provider's health records, and data on intensive care treatment from ICU documentation. Trajectories of post-traumatic symptoms were identified ex post, discriminating patterns of change and k-means clustering. Assignment to the trajectories was predicted in multinomial log-linear models. RESULTS At 24 months, all follow-up measurements of the PTSS-10 were completed in N = 175 patients. Three clusters could be identified regarding clinical trajectories of PTSS levels: stable low symptoms (N = 104 patients [59%]), increasing symptoms (N = 45 patients [26%]), and recovering from symptoms (N = 26 patients [15%]). Patients with initially high post-traumatic symptoms were more likely to show a decrease (OR with 95% CI: 1.1 [1.05, 1.16]). Females (OR = 2.45 [1.11, 5.41]) and patients reporting early traumatic memories of the ICU (OR = 4.04 [1.63, 10]) were at higher risk for increasing PTSS levels. CONCLUSION Post-traumatic stress is a relevant long-term burden for sepsis patients after ICU stay. Identification of three different trajectories within two years after ICU discharge highlights the importance of long-term observation, as a quarter of patients reports few symptoms at discharge yet an increase in symptoms in the two years following. Regular screening of ICU survivors on post-traumatic stress should be considered even in patients with few symptoms and in particular in females and patients reporting traumatic memories of the ICU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infertility affects many couples globally, causing physical, emotional, and financial burdens. While observational studies suggest a link between psychiatric disorders and female infertility, causal relationships remain uncertain. Mendelian randomization analysis, using genome-wide association studies data, minimizes confounding factors and reverse causation, providing valuable insights into causal associations. METHODS We conducted Mendelian randomization analysis to explore the potential causal relationship between female infertility and psychiatric disorders. Genome-wide association studies summary data for female infertility (112,105 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 11,442 cases and 100,663 controls), depression (807,553 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 246,363 cases and 561,190 controls), anxiety (21,763 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 7,016 cases and 14,745 controls), bipolar disorder (51,710 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 20,352 cases and 31,358 controls), and eating disorders (72,517 individuals of European ancestry, comprising 16,992 cases and 55,525 controls) were utilized. Instrumental variables were selected based on significant single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with each phenotype. We assessed instrumental variable strength, examined confounding factors, and employed inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger approaches for analysis. RESULTS Our analysis included 85 single nucleotide polymorphisms for female infertility and 62 single nucleotide polymorphisms for psychiatric disorders. Results suggest a potential causal relationship between depression and female infertility, with both inverse variance weighting and weighted median methods showing increased infertility risk in depressed patients. Evidence is weak regarding bipolar disorder not increasing female infertility risk. We found no evidence supporting causal links between anxiety, eating disorders, and female infertility. Similarly, no causal relationship was found between female infertility and psychiatric disorders in the opposite direction. Sensitivity analyses and tests for heterogeneity and polymorphism supported result robustness. CONCLUSIONS This analysis provides evidence for a potential causal relationship between depression and female infertility. Addressing depression in infertile women may improve fertility outcomes. Further research is needed to explore underlying mechanisms and potential interventions for improving fertility outcomes in women with psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Autonomic adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs (APs) cause clinical challenges, but few studies have investigated sex differences and their underlying biological pathways. Sex-specific regulation of relevant hormones could be involved. We investigated sex differences in autonomic adverse effects related to olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, and aripiprazole, and the role of hormones related to APs. Patients with severe mental disorders (N = 1318) were included and grouped based on AP monotherapy: olanzapine (N = 364), quetiapine (N = 211), risperidone (N = 102), aripiprazole (N = 138), and no AP (N = 503). Autonomic symptoms from the Udvalg for Kliniske Undersøgelser (UKU) side effect scale was analyzed with logistic regression, adjusting for age, diagnosis, and polypharmacy. Further, we analyzed associations between autonomic symptoms and hormones related to APs. We found associations between autonomic adverse effects and APs, with sex-specific risk for palpitations/tachycardia associated with hormonal changes related to APs. Results showed increased salivation associated with aripiprazole, reduced salivation with quetiapine, and nausea/vomiting and palpitations/tachycardia with olanzapine, and higher risk of nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, polyuria/polydipsia, and palpitations/tachycardia in females. Significant sex x AP interaction was found for palpitations/tachycardia, with higher risk in risperidone-treated males, which was associated with different hormone profiles of prolactin, cortisol, and insulin. Our findings implicate a role of several hormones in the sex-specific autonomic adverse effects related to APs.

Abstract
Sex differences are found across brain regions, behaviors, and brain diseases. Sexual differentiation of the brain is initiated prenatally but it continues throughout life, as a result of the interaction of three major factors: gonadal hormones, sex chromosomes, and the environment. These factors are thought to act, in part, via epigenetic mechanisms which control chromatin and transcriptional states in brain cells. In this review, we discuss evidence that epigenetic mechanisms underlie sex-specific neurobehavioral changes during critical organizational periods, across the estrous cycle, and in response to diverse environments throughout life. We further identify future directions for the field that will provide novel mechanistic insights into brain sex differences, inform brain disease treatments and women's brain health in particular, and apply to people across genders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia (SCZ) usually begins in early adult life. The underlying molecular mechanisms of SCZ remain unclear. There is evidence for the involvement of abnormalities in metabolic and endocrine systems in SCZ, even in drug-naïve first-episode schizophrenia patients (DNFES). However, the association between impaired regulation of glucose metabolism and sex hormones was not studied in SCZ. This study aimed to evaluate the interrelationship between sex hormones and high fasting glucose levels in male DNFES patients. METHODS A total of 99 patients with SCZ were recruited, and fasting glucose, fasting insulin, the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), and sex hormones were measured. RESULTS We found that some male patients with SCZ had abnormal levels in glucose metabolism parameters and gonadal hormones that were not within the normal range. Linear regression analysis adjusted for age, waist circumference, and body mass index showed that testosterone levels were negatively associated with fasting insulin in male patients (β = -0.21, t = -2.2, p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Our findings confirm the abnormalities in glucose metabolism parameters and gonadal hormones at the onset of the illness in male DNFES patients with SCZ. In addition, there was an interaction effect between abnormal glucose metabolism and sex hormones in male patients.

Abstract
Worldwide, over 150 million adolescent and adult women use oral contraceptives (OC). An association between OC-use and the emergence of symptoms of mental disorders has been suggested. This systematic review and meta-analysis provide an overview of published research regarding symptoms of mental disorders in association with OC-use, factoring the influence of OC types, age of first-use, duration of OC-intake, and previous diagnoses of mental disorders. A systematic literature search was conducted between June-July 2022. 22 studies were included. While most found no significant OC-use effects on mental symptoms, some hinted at OCs as a potential risk. The existing evidence regarding the potential link between progestin-only OC-use and an elevated risk of mental symptoms in comparison to combined OC-use remains inconclusive. However, due to emerging indications suggesting that the formulation of OC might play a role in mental health outcomes, this topic warrants further investigation. Moreover, indications of an increased risk for depressive symptoms in adolescent OC-users should be noted. Hence, while general population effects seem unlikely, they cannot be completely disregarded. The decision on OC-use should depend on the patient's medical history and should be re-evaluated regularly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evidence from laboratory studies suggests that progesterone may be effective in reducing stress and craving, and may improve cognitive performance in smokers and individuals with cocaine dependence. The objective of this study was to examine if progesterone would attenuate stress-induced craving, anxiety, affect and physiological measures, as well as improve stress-induced cognitive performance (processing speed and selective attention) in individuals diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS This laboratory study included (n = 13) participants who were diagnosed with current AUD and PTSD who were randomly assigned to recive either progesterone (200mg bid) or placebo in identical looking capsules for 3 days. On the fourth day they completed a laboratory session. In the morning of the test session, they received the last dose of medication and completed the rest of the laboratory procedures. The procedures included presentation in random order of personalized trauma and neutral scripts with relaxation in between. Main outcomes included measure of craving, anxiety, affect and cognitive performance. RESULTS Consistent with other research, trauma scripts produced significantly greater increases in craving, anxiety and negative affect when compared with neutral scripts. Progesterone significantly reduced stress-induced symptoms of craving, anxiety, fear, anger and sadness but had no effect on positive emotions (joy, relaxation). Progesterone was effective in ameliorating stress-induced decreases in cognitive performance. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this study demonstrate that progesterone can be effective in reducing stress-induced craving, anxiety and negative affect in a laboratory setting in individuals with comorbid AUD and PTSD. Interestingly, progesterone also improved cognitive performance. These findings require replication in a larger clinical trial and may have implications for treatment among individuals with AUD and PTSD.This study was registered as NCT02187224, at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Abstract
We examined gender differences between resiliency factors (i.e. mindfulness, self-efficacy, coping, intimate care, and caregiver preparedness) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in informal caregivers of patients in the neuroscience intensive care unit (Neuro-ICU). Ninety-two informal caregivers were enrolled during patients' hospitalization and completed resiliency measures at baseline, and a PTSS measure at baseline, 3 and 6 months. We conducted five ANCOVAs to explore gender and resiliency on PTSS. No significant main effects of gender on PTSS were observed across time points. However, main effects were seen for resiliency on PTSS at baseline for informal caregivers with high (vs. low) mindfulness, coping, and self-efficacy. Gender moderated the association between mindfulness and PTSS (i.e. high mindfulness at baseline was associated with lower PTSS in males compared to females at 3 months) and intimate care and PTSS (high intimate care at baseline was associated with lower PTSS in males than females at 6 months; high intimate care at baseline for females was associated with lower PTSS at 6 months than females with low intimate care). Overall, we observed associations among informal caregivers' gender, resiliency, and PTSS, with males particularly benefitting from mindfulness and intimate care. These findings hold value for future inquiry into gender differences in this population with possible clinical implications.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is worldwide a prevalent mental illness and a leading risk factor for suicide. Over the past three decades, it has been discovered that sex differences exist throughout the entire panorama of BD, but the etiologic regions and mechanisms that generate such differences remain poorly characterized. Available evidence indicates that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a critical region that controls higher-order cognitive processing and mood, exhibits biological disparities between male and female patients with psychiatric disorders, which are highly correlated with the co-occurrence of psychotic symptoms. This review addresses the sex differences in BD concerning epidemiology, cognitive impairments, clinical manifestations, neuroimaging, and laboratory abnormalities. It also provides strong evidence linking DLPFC to the etiopathogenesis of these sex differences. We emphasize the importance of identifying gene signatures using human brain transcriptomics, which can depict sexually different variations, explain sex-biased symptomatic features, and provide novel targets for sex-specific therapeutics.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the parenting characteristics of young patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and explore the sex differences. The parental rearing pattern of young patients with BD was measured and compared with the healthy control of young adults. The EMBU scale was used to assess parental rearing patterns. Patients with BD reported significantly higher scores in the punishment and severity index, as well as of the rejection and denial index, but lower scores in the warmth & affectionate index in the paternal rearing pattern, compared with healthy controls. In addition, patients scored higher on the punishment and severity index and rejection and patterns index in maternal rearing patterns. More importantly, we found significant sex differences in maternal rearing patterns (pBonferroni < 0.05). Specifically, in the maternal rearing patterns, male patients had higher scores on the favoring index than male controls, whereas female patients had lower scores on the warmth & affectionate index than female controls. This study shows significant differences in parental rearing patterns between patients and control subjects. Male patients were overprotective by their mothers and female patients were overlooked by their mothers during upbringing.

Abstract
Introduction Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) is a stress-related neuropeptide that is produced in several brain areas. It acts by 3 receptors: PACAP type-1 (PAC1), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) -1 and -2 (VPAC1 and 2). Data on polymorphisms in PACAP and PAC1 indicate a relationship of the PACAP system with schizophrenia (SCZ). Methods The prefrontal cortex was chosen to measure PACAP-gene related expression changes, since this is a central structure in the symptoms of schizophrenia (SCZ). We investigated alterations in the expression of the PACAP-related genes by qPCR in the human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of 35 SCZ patients and 34 matched controls in relation to SCZ, suicide, gender and medication. Results The ACC revealed an upregulation in PACAP, PAC1, VPAC1 and VPAC2 in SCZ suicide (S) completers compared to controls. An increase in PACAP, VPAC1 and VPAC2 expression was also present in the ACC in SCZ-S compared to SCZ patients who died naturally (SCZ-N). In the DLPFC, an increase in PAC1 was found in SCZ-N patients compared to SCZ-S and controls. Moreover, an increase in all PACAP-related genes was present in SCZ-N male patients compared to SCZ-N females. Concluding, expression changes were found in PACAP-related genes in relation to SCZ, suicide and gender. In particular, there was a higher PACAP-related gene expression in SCZ patients in the ACC in relation to suicide and in DLPFC in relation to SCZ. Discussion These findings suggest a potential link between PACAP and the pathophysiology of SCZ and suicide. Further research is needed to understand the functional significance and potential clinical applications of these changes.

Abstract
Objective To estimate 30-year CVD risk and modifiable risk factors in young adults with serious mental illness (SMI) versus those without, and assess variations in CVD risk by race, ethnicity, and sex. Method In this cross-sectional study, we estimated and compared the Framingham 30-year CVD risk score and individual modifiable CVD risk factors in young adult (20-39 years) primary care patients with and without SMI at two US healthcare systems (January 2016-Septemeber 2018). Interaction terms assessed whether the SMI-risk association differed across demographic groups. Results Covariate-adjusted 30-year CVD risk was significantly higher for those with (n=4228) versus those without (n=155,363) SMI (RR 1.28, 95% CI [1.26, 1.30]). Patients with SMI had higher rates of hypertension (OR 2.02 [1.7, 2.39]), diabetes (OR 3.14 [2.59, 3.82]), obesity (OR 1.93 [1.8, 2.07]), and smoking (OR 4.94 [4.6, 5.36]). The increased 30-year CVD risk associated with SMI varied significantly by race and sex: there was an 8% higher risk in Black compared to White patients (RR 1.08, [1.04, 1.12]) and a 9% lower risk in men compared to women (RR 0.91 [0.88, 0.94]). Conclusions Young adults with SMI are at increased 30-year risk of CVD, and further disparities exist for Black individuals and women.

Abstract
The ability to detect, appraise, and respond to another's emotional state is essential to social affective behavior. This is mediated by a network of brain regions responsible for integrating external cues with internal states to orchestrate situationally appropriate behavioral responses. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) and the insular cortex are reciprocally connected regions involved in social cognition and prior work in male rats revealed their contributions to social affective behavior. We investigated the functional role of these regions in female rats in a social affective preference (SAP) test in which experimental rats approach stressed juvenile but avoid stressed adult conspecifics. In separate experiments, the BLA or the insula were inhibited by local infusion of muscimol (100ng/side in 0.5μL saline) or vehicle prior to SAP tests. In both regions, muscimol interfered with preference for the stressed juvenile and naive adult, indicating that these regions are necessary for appropriate social affective behavior. In male rats, SAP behavior requires insular oxytocin but there are noteworthy sex differences in the oxytocin receptor distribution in rats. Oxytocin (500nM) administered to the insula did not alter social behavior but oxytocin infusions to the BLA increased social interaction. In sum, female rats appear to use the same BLA and insula regions for social affective behavior but sex differences exist in contribution of oxytocin in the insula.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with significant differences in the incidence and symptomology between cisgender men and women. In recent years, considerably more attention has been on the inclusion of sex and gender in schizophrenia research. However, the majority of this research has failed to consider gender outside of the socially constructed binary of men and women. As a result, little is known about schizophrenia in transgender and gender-nonconforming populations. In this review, we present evidence showing that transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals have elevated risk of developing schizophrenia, and we discuss minority stress theory and other potential factors that may contribute to this risk. The need for inclusion of transgender and gender-nonconforming communities in schizophrenia research is emphasized, alongside a discussion on considerations and challenges associated with this type of research. Finally, we offer specific strategies to make research on schizophrenia, and research on other neuropsychiatric disorders, more inclusive of those populations that do not fall within the socially constructed gender binary. If we are to succeed in the development of more personalized therapeutic approaches for all, a better understanding of the variability of the human brain is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In addition to social and cultural factors, sex differences in the central nervous system have a critical influence on behavior, although the neurobiology underlying these differences remains unclear. Interestingly, the Locus Coeruleus (LC), a noradrenergic nucleus that exhibits sexual dimorphism, integrates signals that are related to diverse activities, including emotions, cognition and pain. Therefore, we set-out to evaluate sex differences in behaviors related to LC nucleus, and subsequently, to assess the sex differences in LC morphology and function. METHODS Female and male C57BL/6J mice were studied to explore the role of the LC in anxiety, depressive-like behavior, well-being, pain, and learning and memory. We also explored the number of noradrenergic LC cells, their somatodendritic volume, as well as the electrophysiological properties of LC neurons in each sex. RESULTS While both male and female mice displayed similar depressive-like behavior, female mice exhibited more anxiety-related behaviors. Interestingly, females outperformed males in memory tasks that involved distinguishing objects with small differences and they also showed greater thermal pain sensitivity. Immunohistological analysis revealed that females had fewer noradrenergic cells yet they showed a larger dendritic volume than males. Patch clamp electrophysiology studies demonstrated that LC neurons in female mice had a lower capacitance and that they were more excitable than male LC neurons, albeit with similar action potential properties. CONCLUSIONS Overall, this study provides new insights into the sex differences related to LC nucleus and associated behaviors, which may explain the heightened emotional arousal response observed in females.

Abstract
A remarkable feature of the brain is its sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism in brain structure and function is associated with clinical implications documented previously in healthy individuals but also in those who suffer from various brain disorders. Sex-based differences concerning some features such as the risk, prevalence, age of onset, and symptomatology have been confirmed in a range of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. The mechanisms responsible for the establishment of sex-based differences between men and women are not fully understood. The present paper provides up-to-date data on sex-related dissimilarities observed in brain disorders and highlights the most relevant features that differ between males and females. The topic is very important as the recognition of disparities between the sexes might allow for the identification of therapeutic targets and pharmacological approaches for intractable neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Women have increased risks for both sleep disturbances and disorders and for mental health issues throughout their lives, starting in adolescence. Women have a higher prevalence of insomnia disorder and restless legs syndrome (RLS) versus men, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more likely as women age. Hormonal transitions are important to consider in women's sleep. For women, insomnia, OSA, and RLS are predictive of depression, and insomnia and sleep-disordered breathing are predictive of Alzheimer disease. These findings underscore the importance of assessment, treatment, and future research examining sleep and mental health in women, given their unique and increased vulnerability.

Abstract
Sex/gender differences in cognitive sciences are riddled by conflicting perspectives. At the center of debates are clinical, social, and political perspectives. Front and center, evolutionary and biological perspectives have often focused on 'nature' arguments, while feminist and constructivist views have often focused on 'nurture arguments regarding cognitive sex differences. In the current narrative review, we provide a comprehensive overview regarding the origins and historical advancement of these debates while providing a summary of the results in the field of sexually polymorphic cognition. In so doing, we attempt to highlight the importance of using transdisciplinary perspectives which help bridge disciplines together to provide a refined understanding the specific factors that drive sex differences a gender diversity in cognitive abilities. To summarize, biological sex (e.g., birth-assigned sex, sex hormones), socio-cultural gender (gender identity, gender roles), and sexual orientation each uniquely shape the cognitive abilities reviewed. To date, however, few studies integrate these sex and gender factors together to better understand individual differences in cognitive functioning. This has potential benefits if a broader understanding of sex and gender factors are systematically measured when researching and treating numerous conditions where cognition is altered.

Abstract
Maternal infections during pregnancy pose an increased risk for neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders (NPDs) in the offspring. Here, we examined age- and sex-dependent dynamic changes of the hippocampal synaptic proteome after maternal immune activation (MIA) in embryonic and adult mice. Adult male and female MIA offspring exhibited social deficits and sex-specific depression-like behaviours, among others, validating the model. Furthermore, we observed dose-, age-, and sex-dependent synaptic proteome differences. Analysis of the embryonic synaptic proteome implicates sphingolipid and ketoacid metabolism pathway disruptions during neurodevelopment for NPD-pertinent sequelae. In the embryonic hippocampus, prenatal immune activation also led to changes in neuronal guidance, glycosphingolipid metabolism important for signalling and myelination, and post-translational modification of proteins that regulate intercellular interaction and developmental timing. In adulthood, the observed changes in synaptoneurosomes revealed a dynamic shift toward transmembrane trafficking, intracellular signalling cascades, and hormone-mediated metabolism. Importantly, 68 of the proteins with differential abundance in the embryonic brains of MIA offspring were also altered in adulthood, 75% of which retained their directionality. These proteins are involved in synaptic organisation, neurotransmitter receptor regulation, and the vesicle cycle. A cluster of persistently upregulated proteins, including AKT3, PAK1/3, PPP3CA, formed a functional network enriched in the embryonic brain that is involved in cellular responses to environmental stimuli. To infer a link between the overlapping protein alterations and cognitive and psychiatric traits, we probed human phenome-wise association study data for cognitive and psychiatric phenotypes and all, but PORCN were significantly associated with the investigated domains. Our data provide insights into the dynamic effects of an early prenatal immune activation on developing and mature hippocampi and highlights targets for early intervention in individuals exposed to such immune challenges.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by intensive mood fluctuations. While hormones imbalance plays important role in the mood swings, it is unknown whether peripheral hormones profiles could differentiate the manic and depressive mood episodes in BD. In this study, we investigated the changes of various hormones and inflammatory markers across distinct mood episodes of BD in a large clinical study to provide mood episode-specific peripheral biomarkers for BD. METHODS A total of 8332 BD patients (n = 2679 depressive episode; n = 5653 manic episode) were included. All patients were in acute state of mood episodes and need hospitalization. A panel of blood tests were performed for levels of sex hormones (serum levels of testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone), stress hormones (adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol), and an inflammation marker (C-reactive protein, CRP). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the discriminatory potential of the biomarkers for mood episodes. RESULTS In overall comparison between mood episodes, the BD patients expressed higher levels of testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and CRP (P < 0.001) and lower adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) level (P < 0.001) during manic episode. The episode-specific changes of testosterone, ACTH, and CRP levels remained between the two groups (P < 0.001) after correction for the confounding factors including age, sex, BMI, occupation, marital status, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, psychotic symptoms, and age at onset. Furthermore, we found a sex- and age-specific impact of combined biomarkers in mood episodes in male BD patients aged ≥ 45 years (AUC = 0.70, 95% CI, 0.634-0.747), not in females. CONCLUSIONS While both hormone and inflammatory change is independently associated with mood episodes, we found that the combination of sex hormones, stress hormones and CRP could be more effective to differentiate the manic and depressive episode. The biological signatures of mood episodes in BD patients may be sex- and age-specific. Our findings not only provide mood episode-related biological markers, but also better support for targeted intervention in BD treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex differences in brain structure and neurodevelopment occur in non-clinical populations. We investigated whether sex had a similar effect on developmental domains amongst boys and girls with a familial risk of schizophrenia (FHR-SZ), bipolar disorder (FHR-BP), and controls. METHODS Through Danish registries, we identified 522 7-year-old children (242 girls) with FHR-SZ, FHR-BP, and controls. We assessed their performance within the domains of neurocognition, motor function, language, social cognition, social behavior, psychopathology, and home environment. RESULTS FHR-SZ boys compared with FHR-SZ girls had a higher proportion of disruptive behavior and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and exhibited lower performance in manual dexterity, balance, and emotion recognition. No sex differences were found between boys and girls within FHR-BP group. Compared with controls, both FHR-SZ boys and FHR-SZ girls showed impaired processing speed and working memory, had lower levels of global functioning, and were more likely to live in an inadequate home environment. Compared with control boys, FHR-SZ boys showed impaired manual dexterity, social behavior, and social responsiveness, and had a higher proportion of ADHD and disruptive behavior disorder diagnoses. Stress and adjustment disorders were more common in FHR-BP boys compared with control boys. We found no differences between FHR-BP girls and control girls. CONCLUSIONS Impairment within neurodevelopmental domains associated within FHR-SZ boys v. FHR-SZ girls was most evident among boys, whereas no sex differences were found within the FHR-BP group (FHR-BP boys v. FHR-BP girls). FHR-SZ boys exhibited the highest proportion of early developmental impairments.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to investigate the influence of media on college students' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods After the COVID-19 outbreak, we used cross-sectional surveys through online questionnaires to investigate the mental health of college students in lockdown at home. We identified the influencing factors of PTSD symptoms using the Chi-Square test and ordinal logistic regression analysis. Results In 10,989 valid questionnaires, 9,906 college students with no PTSD symptoms, 947 college students with subclinical PTSD symptoms (1-3 items), and 136 college students with four or more PTSD symptoms were screened out. The results showed that media content impacted the mental health of college students in lockdown at home. Positive media content was negatively correlated with PTSD symptoms among college students. PTSD symptoms were not associated with sources of information. Moreover, College students with PTSD symptoms would reduce their willingness to learn and could not complete online learning efficiently. Conclusion PTSD symptoms are related to media exposure and excessive information involvement of COVID-19 in college students, which influences the willingness to attend online classes.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder with a chronic, progressive course. The etiology of this condition is linked to the interactions of multiple genes and environmental factors. The earlier age of onset of schizophrenia, the higher frequency of negative symptoms in the clinical presentation, and the poorer response to antipsychotic treatment in men compared to women suggests the involvement of sex hormones in these processes. This article aims to draw attention to the possible relationship between testosterone and some clinical features in male schizophrenic patients and discuss the complex nature of these phenomena based on data from the literature. PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched to select the papers without limiting the time of the publications. Hormone levels in the body are regulated by many organs and systems, and take place through the neuroendocrine, hormonal, neural, and metabolic pathways. Sex hormones play an important role in the development and function of the organism. Besides their impact on secondary sex characteristics, they influence brain development and function, mood, and cognition. In men with schizophrenia, altered testosterone levels were noted. In many cases, evidence from available single studies gave contradictory results. However, it seems that the testosterone level in men affected by schizophrenia may differ depending on the phase of the disease, types of clinical symptoms, and administered therapy. The etiology of testosterone level disturbances may be very complex. Besides the impact of the illness (schizophrenia), stress, and antipsychotic drug-induced hyperprolactinemia, testosterone levels may be influenced by, i.a., obesity, substances of abuse (e.g., ethanol), or liver damage.
