Dynamic interplay between metal nanoparticles and oxide support under redox conditions

Chip-Inspired Design of High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries by Integrating Monodisperse Sulfur Nanoreactors on Graphene

For practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), designing devices with an overall optimal structure instead of modifying electrode materials is significant. Herein, we report a chip-inspired design of a vertically integrated structure as an LSB cathode by implanting Mo2C nanoparticles and nanosulfur into the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) matrix. This configuration enabled the synthesis of isolated sulfur nanoreactors (S-NRs) integrated in a tandem array on the rGO, generating chip-like integrated LSBs. The spatial confinement/protection and concentration gradient of the S-NRs effectively avoided the dissolution, diffusion, and loss of polysulfides, thereby enhancing the sulfur utilization and redox reaction kinetics. Additionally, the adaptive storage energy can be improved by utilizing the tandem, isolation, and synergistic multiplicative effect among the nanoreactor units. As a result, the integrated LSB cathode obtained excellent electrochemical performances with an initial capacity of 1392 mAh g-1 at 0.1C, a low capacity decay rate of 0.017% per cycle during 1500 cycles of operation at 0.5C, and a superior rate performance. This work provides a rational design idea and method of further advancing the precise preparation of high-performance energy storage devices.

Strong Interactions between Au Nanoparticles and BiVO4 Photoanode Boosts Hole Extraction for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is widely proposed as a key factor in tuning catalytic performances. Herein, the classical SMSI between Au nanoparticles (NPs) and BiVO4 (BVO) supports (Au/BVO-SMSI) is discovered and used innovatively for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Owing to the SMSI, the electrons transfer from V4+ to Au NPs, leading to the formation of electron-rich Au species (Auδ-) and strong electronic interaction (i.e., Auδ--Ov-V4+), which readily contributes to extract photogenerated holes and promote charge separation. Benefitted from the SMSI effect, the as-prepared Au/BVO-SMSI photoanode exhibits a superior photocurrent density of 6.25 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode after the deposition of FeOOH/NiOOH cocatalysts. This work provides a pioneering view for extending SMSI effect to bimetal oxide supports for PEC water splitting, and guides the interfacial electronic and geometric structure modulation of photoanodes consisting of metal NPs and reducible oxides for improved solar energy conversion efficiency.

Redox dynamics and surface structures of an active palladium catalyst during methane oxidation

Catalysts based on palladium are among the most effective in the complete oxidation of methane. Despite extensive studies and notable advances, the nature of their catalytically active species and conceivable structural dynamics remains only partially understood. Here, we combine operando transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the active state and catalytic function of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) under methane oxidation conditions. We show that the particle size, phase composition and dynamics respond appreciably to changes in the gas-phase chemical potential. In combination with mass spectrometry (MS) conducted simultaneously with in situ observations, we uncover that the catalytically active state exhibits phase coexistence and oscillatory phase transitions between Pd and PdO. Aided by DFT calculations, we provide a rationale for the observed redox dynamics and demonstrate that the emergence of catalytic activity is related to the dynamic interplay between coexisting phases, with the resulting strained PdO having more favorable energetics for methane oxidation.

Dynamic Active Sites In Situ Formed in Metal Nanoparticle Reshaping under Reaction Conditions

Understanding the nonequilibrium transformation of nanocatalysts under reaction conditions is important because metastable atomic structures may be created during the process, which offers unique activities in reactions. Although reshaping of metal nanoparticles (NPs) under reaction conditions has been widely recognized, the dynamic reshaping process has been less studied at the atomic scale. Here, we develop an atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo model to simulate the complete reshaping process of Pt nanoparticles in a CO environment and reveal the in situ formation of atomic clusters on the NP surface, a new type of active site beyond conventional understanding, boosting the reactivities in the CO oxidation reaction. Interestingly, highly active peninsula and inactive island clusters both form on the (111) facets and interchange in varying states of dynamic equilibrium, which influences the catalytic activities significantly. This study provides new fundamental knowledge of nanocatalysis and new guidance for the rational design of nanocatalysts.

Influences of Ru and ZrO2 interaction on the hydroesterification of styrene

Interfacial Lewis acid-base pairs are commonly found in ZrO2-supported metal catalysts due to the facile generation of oxygen vacancies of ZrO2. These pairs have been reported to play a crucial role in olefin hydroesterification, especially in the absence of acid promoters and ligands. In this study, a series of ZrO2-supported Ru catalysts with ruthenium(iii) chloride and ruthenium(iii) acetylacetonate as precursors were prepared for the styrene hydroesterification. The catalysts were thoroughly characterized by TPR, TEM, EPR, XPS, and FTIR. The Ru precursors significantly influenced the size and electronic properties of Ru clusters, albeit having minimal impact on oxygen vacancies. Mechanistic studies of styrene hydroesterification over ZrO2-supported Ru catalysts revealed that the carbon monoxide insertion followed the hydrogen transfer step to activated styrene. Higher activity is exhibited over ZrO2-supported Ru catalysts prepared with ruthenium(iii) chloride as a precursor, attributed to the lower adsorption strength of CO over Ru clusters, as evidenced by FTIR and DFT calculations.

Reverse water gas-shift reaction product driven dynamic activation of molybdenum nitride catalyst surface

In heterogeneous catalysis catalyst activation is often observed during the reaction process, which is mostly attributed to the induction by reactants. In this work we report that surface structure of molybdenum nitride (MoNx) catalyst exhibits a high dependency on the partial pressure or concentration of reaction products i.e., CO and H2O in reverse water gas-shift reaction (RWGS) (CO2:H2 = 1:3) but not reactants of CO2 and H2. Molybdenum oxide (MoOx) overlayers formed by oxidation with H2O are observed at reaction pressure below 10 mbar or with low partial pressure of CO/H2O products, while CO-induced surface carbonization happens at reaction pressure above 100 mbar and with high partial pressure of CO/H2O products. The reaction products induce restructuring of MoNx surface into more active molybdenum carbide (MoCx) to increase the reaction rate and make for higher partial pressure CO, which in turn promote further surface carbonization of MoNx. We refer to this as the positive feedback between catalytic activity and catalyst activation in RWGS, which should be widely present in heterogeneous catalysis.

Tri-system integration in metal-oxide nanocomposites via in-situ solution-processed method for ultrathin flexible transparent electrodes

For stable operation of ultrathin flexible transparent electrodes (uFTEs), it is critical to implement effective risk management during concurrent multi-loading operation of electrical bias and mechanical folding cycles in high-humidity environments. Despite extensive efforts in preparing solution-processed uFTEs with cost-effective and high-throughput means, achieving in-situ nano-adhesion in heterogeneous metal-oxide nanocomposites remains challenging. In this work, we observed by serendipity liquid-like behaviour of transparent metal-oxide-semiconductor zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) onto silver nanowires (AgNWs) developed by in-situ solution processed method (iSPM). This enabled us to address the long-standing issue of vulnerability in the nanocomposite caused by the interface of dissimilar materials between AgNWs and ZnONPs, resulting in a remarkably improved multi-loading operation. Importantly, substrate-integrated uFTEs constituted of the metal-oxide nanocomposite electrode semi-embedded in the polymer matrix of greatly thin <0.5 μm thickness is successfully demonstrated with the smooth surface topography, promoted by the tri-system integration including (i) AgNW-AgNW, (ii) ZnONP-ZnONP, and (iii) AgNW-ZnONP systems. Our finding unveils the complex interfacial dynamics associated with the heterogeneous interface system between AgNWs and ZnONPs and holds great promise in understanding the in-situ nano-adhesion process and increasing the design flexibility of next generation solution-processed uFTEs.

A Data and DFT-Driven Framework for Predicting the Microstructure of Submonolayer Inverse Metal Oxide on Metal Catalysts

Metal oxides on metal (inverse) catalysts can selectively drive many important reactions. However, understanding the active site under experimentally relevant conditions is lacking. Herein, we introduce a computational framework for predicting atomic models of stable inverse catalysts and demonstrate it for WOx on Pt(553) and a Pt79 nanoparticle at variable WOx coverages. An evolutionary algorithm identifies a small (5%) subset of promising atomic configurations on which DFT simulations are performed. We predict a maximum coverage of ∼50% WOx on Pt(553), consisting of small clusters (tetramers and pentamers), which preferentially reside on the terrace, with their oxygen atoms interacting with the Pt step sites. Consistently, WOx does not lie on curved and undercoordinated metal sites of Pt nanoparticles. The oxide clusters prefer a partially reduced oxidation state. Theoretical EXAFS spectra for select configurations provide insights into interpreting experimental spectra of inverse catalysts. The framework applies to other catalysts.

Atomic Dynamics of Multi-Interfacial Migration and Transformations

Redox-induced interconversions of metal oxidation states typically result in multiple phase boundaries that separate chemically and structurally distinct oxides and suboxides. Directly probing such multi-interfacial reactions is challenging because of the difficulty in simultaneously resolving the multiple reaction fronts at the atomic scale. Using the example of CuO reduction in H2 gas, a reaction pathway of CuO → monoclinic m-Cu4 O3 → Cu2 O is demonstrated and identifies interfacial reaction fronts at the atomic scale, where the Cu2 O/m-Cu4 O3 interface shows a diffuse-type interfacial transformation; while the lateral flow of interfacial ledges appears to control the m-Cu4 O3 /CuO transformation. Together with atomistic modeling, it is shown that such a multi-interface transformation results from the surface-reaction-induced formation of oxygen vacancies that diffuse into deeper atomic layers, thereby resulting in the formation of the lower oxides of Cu2 O and m-Cu4 O3 , and activate the interfacial transformations. These results demonstrate the lively dynamics at the reaction fronts of the multiple interfaces and have substantial implications for controlling the microstructure and interphase boundaries by coupling the interplay between the surface reaction dynamics and the resulting mass transport and phase evolution in the subsurface and bulk.

Construction of a Metal-Silica Interface for Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Fabricating optimum surface structures represents an attractive approach for synthesizing supported catalysts with high activity and specific selectivity. New active sites could be flexibly constructed via the strong metal-support interaction under the redox condition. Herein, we demonstrated the formation of a new Rh-Si surface on a silica-modified carbon nanotube supported Rh catalyst under the high-temperature reduction condition as well as a thin amorphous silica coating layer and weak chemisorption toward the CO molecule. The electronic interactions between Rh and Si, along with the particular structure, guarantee desirable catalytic performance for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions. This facile approach might be extensively used in constructing new active sites with robust activity and specific selectivity in diverse heterogeneous catalysis systems.

Significance of Epitaxial Growth of PtO2 on Rutile TiO2 for Pt/TiO2 Catalysts

TiO2-supported Pt species have been widely applied in numerous critical reactions involving photo-, thermo-, and electrochemical-catalysis for decades. Manipulation of the state of the Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts is crucial for fine-tuning their catalytic performance. Here, we report an interesting discovery showing the epitaxial growth of PtO2 atomic layers on rutile TiO2, potentially allowing control of the states of active Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts. The presence of PtO2 atomic layers could modulate the geometric configuration and electronic state of the Pt species under reduction conditions, resulting in a spread of the particle shape and obtaining a Pt/PtO2/TiO2 structure with more positive valence of Pt species. As a result, such a catalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction, while also promoting the thermocatalytic CO oxidation, surpassing the performance of the Pt/TiO2 catalyst with no epitaxial structure. This novel epitaxial growth of the PtO2 structure on rutile TiO2 in Pt/TiO2 catalysts shows its potential in the rational design of highly active and economical catalysts toward diverse catalytic reactions.

Renaissance of Strong Metal-Support Interactions

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have emerged as a significant and cutting-edge area of research in heterogeneous catalysis. They play crucial roles in modifying the chemisorption properties, interfacial structure, and electronic characteristics of supported metals, thereby exerting a profound influence on the catalytic properties. This Perspective aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements and insights into SMSIs, with a focus on state-of-the-art in situ/operando characterization techniques. This overview also identifies innovative designs and applications of new types of SMSI systems in catalytic chemistry and highlights their pivotal role in enhancing catalytic performance, selectivity, and stability in specific cases. Particularly notable is the discovery of SMSI between active metals and metal carbides, which opens up a new era in the field of SMSI. Additionally, the strong interactions between atomically dispersed metals and supports are discussed, with an emphasis on the electronic effects of the support. The chemical nature of SMSI and its underlying catalytic mechanisms are also elaborated upon. It is evident that SMSI modification has become a powerful tool for enhancing catalytic performance in various catalytic applications.

Spontaneous Formation of Ultrasmall Noble Metal Nanoparticles on Cobalt-Based Layered Double Hydroxide for Electrochemical and Environmental Catalysis

Supported noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) are appealing for energy and environment catalysis. To facilitate the loading of NMNPs, in situ reduction of Mn+ on the support with extra reductants/surfactants is adopted, but typically results in aggregated NMNPs with uneven size distributions or blocked active sites of the NMNPs. Herein, the use of cobalt layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) is proposed as both support and reductant for the preparation of supported NMNPs with ultrasmall sizes and even distributions. The resultant Co-LDH-supported NMNPs exhibit excellent catalytic performance and stability. For example, Ir/Co-LDH displays a low overpotential of 188 mV (10 mA cm-2 ) for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction and a long-term stability over 100 h (100 mA cm-2 ) in overall water splitting. Ru/Co-LDH can achieve a 4-nitrophenol reduction with high rate of 0.36 min-1 and S2- detection with low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 µm. Overall, this work provides a green and effective strategy to fabricate supported NMNPs with greatly improved catalytic performances.

Constructing Nanoporous Ir/Ta2 O5 Interfaces on Metallic Glass for Durable Acidic Water Oxidation

Although proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) are considered as a promising technique for green hydrogen production, it remains crucial to develop intrinsically effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and durability. Here, a flexible self-supporting electrode with nanoporous Ir/Ta2O5 electroactive surface is reported for acidic OER via dealloying IrTaCoB metallic glass ribbons. The catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic OER performance with an overpotential of 218 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec-1 in acidic media, superior to most electrocatalysts. More impressively, the assembled PEMWE with nanoporous Ir/Ta2 O5 as an anode shows exceptional performance of electrocatalytic hydrogen production and can operate steadily for 260 h at 100 mA cm-2 . In situ spectroscopy characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that the modest adsorption of OOH* intermediates to active Ir sites lower the OER energy barrier, while the electron donation behavior of Ta2 O5 to stabilize the high-valence states of Ir during the OER process extended catalyst's durability.

In Situ Visualization and Mechanistic Understandings on Facet-Dependent Atomic Redispersion of Platinum on CeO2

Redispersion is an effective method for regeneration of sintered metal-supported catalysts. However, the ambiguous mechanistic understanding hinders the delicate controlling of active metals at the atomic level. Herein, the redispersion mechanism of atomically dispersed Pt on CeO2 is revealed and manipulated by in situ techniques combining well-designed model catalysts. Pt nanoparticles (NPs) sintered on CeO2 nano-octahedra under reduction and oxidation conditions, while redispersed on CeO2 nanocubes above ∼500 °C in an oxidizing atmosphere. The dynamic shrinkage and disappearance of Pt NPs on CeO2 (100) facets was directly visualized by in situ TEM. The generated atomically dispersed Pt with the square-planar [PtO4]2+ structure on CeO2 (100) facets was also confirmed by combining Cs-corrected STEM and spectroscopy techniques. The redispersion and atomic control were ascribed to the high mobility of PtO2 at high temperatures and its strong binding with square-planar O4 sites over CeO2 (100). These understandings are important for the regulation of atomically dispersed platinum catalysts.

Enhanced Methanol Synthesis over Self-Limited ZnOx Overlayers on Cu Nanoparticles Formed via Gas-Phase Migration Route

Supported metal catalysts are widely used for chemical conversion, in which construction of high density metal-oxide or oxide-metal interface is an important means to improve their reaction performance. Here, Cu@ZnOx encapsulation structure has been in situ constructed through gas-phase migration of Zn species from ZnO particles onto surface of Cu nanoparticles under CO2 hydrogenation atmosphere at 450 °C. The gas-phase deposition of Zn species onto the Cu surface and growth of ZnOx overlayer is self-limited under the high temperature and redox gas (CO2 /H2 ) conditions. Accordingly, high density ZnOx -Cu interface sites can be effectively tailored to have an enhanced activity in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This work reveals a new route for the construction of active oxide-metal interface and classic strong metal-support interaction state through gas-phase migration of support species induced by high temperature redox reaction atmosphere.

Support-facet-dependent morphology of small Pt particles on ceria

Direct atomic scale information on how the structure of supported nanoparticles is affected by the metal-support interaction is rare. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy, we provide direct evidence of a facet-dependent support interaction for Pt nanoparticles on CeO2, governing the dimensionality of small platinum particles. Our findings indicate that particles consisting of less than ∼130 atoms prefer a 3D shape on CeO2(111) facets, while 2D raft structures are favored on CeO2(100) facets. Measurements of stationary particles on both surface facets are supplemented by time resolved measurements following a single particle with atomic resolution as it migrates from CeO2(111) to CeO2(100), undergoing a dimensionality change from 3D to 2D. The intricate transformation mechanism reveals how the 3D particle disassembles and completely wets a neighboring CeO2(100) facet. Density functional theory calculations confirm the structure-trend and reveal the thermodynamic driving force for the migration of small particles. Knowledge of the presented metal-support interactions is crucial to establish structure-function relationships in a range of applications based on supported nanostructures.

Carbon Encapsulation of Supported Metallic Iridium Nanoparticles: An in Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Study and Implications for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Carbon-supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) comprise an important class of heterogeneous catalysts. The interaction between the metal and carbon support influences the overall material properties, viz., the catalytic performance. Herein we use in situ and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in combination with in situ X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the encapsulation of metallic iridium NPs by carbon in an Ir/C catalyst. Real-time atomic-scale imaging visualizes particle reshaping and increased graphitization of the carbon support upon heating of Ir/C in vacuum. According to in situ TEM results, carbon overcoating grows over Ir NPs during the heating process, starting from ca. 550 °C. With the carbon overlayers formed, no sintering and migration of Ir NPs is observed at 800 °C, yet the initial Ir NPs sinter at or below 550 °C, i.e., at a temperature associated with an incomplete particle encapsulation. The carbon overlayer corrugates when the temperature is decreased from 800 to 200 °C and this process is associated with the particle surface reconstruction and is reversible, such that the corrugated carbon overlayer can be smoothed out by increasing the temperature back to 800 °C. The catalytic performance (activity and stability) of the encapsulated Ir NPs in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is higher than that of the initial (nonencapsulated) state of Ir/C. Overall, this work highlights microscopic details of the currently understudied phenomenon of the carbon encapsulation of supported noble metal NPs and demonstrates additionally that the encapsulation by carbon is an effective measure for tuning the catalytic performance.

Direct Operando Visualization of Metal Support Interactions Induced by Hydrogen Spillover During CO2 Hydrogenation

The understanding of catalyst active sites is a fundamental challenge for the future rational design of optimized and bespoke catalysts. For instance, the partial reduction of Ce4+ surface sites to Ce3+ and the formation of oxygen vacancies are critical for CO2 hydrogenation, CO oxidation, and the water gas shift reaction. Furthermore, metal nanoparticles, the reducible support, and metal support interactions are prone to evolve under reaction conditions; therefore a catalyst structure must be characterized under operando conditions to identify active states and deduce structure-activity relationships. In the present work, temperature-induced morphological and chemical changes in Ni nanoparticle-decorated mesoporous CeO2 by means of in situ quantitative multimode electron tomography and in situ heating electron energy loss spectroscopy, respectively, are investigated. Moreover, operando electron energy loss spectroscopy is employed using a windowed gas cell and reveals the role of Ni-induced hydrogen spillover on active Ce3+ site formation and enhancement of the overall catalytic performance.

Electronic Phosphide-Support Interactions in Carbon-Supported Molybdenum Phosphide Catalysts Derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks

Interfacial interaction in carbon-supported catalysts can offer geometric, electronic, and compositional effects that can be utilized to regulate catalytically active sites, while this is far from being systematically investigated in carbon-supported phosphide catalysts. Here, we proposed a novel concept of electronic phosphide-support interaction (EPSI), which was confirmed by using molybdenum phosphide (MoP) supported on nitrogen-phosphorus codoped carbon (NPC) as a model catalyst (MoP@NPC). Such a strong EPSI could not only stabilize MoP in a low-oxidation state under environmental conditions but also regulate its electronic structure, leading to reduced dissociation energy of the oxygen-containing intermediates and enhancing the catalytic activity for oxidative desulfurization. The removal of dibenzothiophene over the MoP@NPC was as high as 100% with a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 0.0027 s-1, which was 33 times higher than that of MoP without EPSI. This work will open new avenues for the development of high-performance supported phosphide catalysts.

Defect-Mediated Growth of Crystallographic Shear Plane

As representative extended planar defects, crystallographic shear (CS) planes, namely Wadsley defects, play an important role in modifying the physical and chemical properties of metal oxides. Although these special structures have been intensively investigated for high-rate anode materials and catalysts, it is still experimentally unclear how the CS planes form and propagate at the atomic scale. Here, the CS plane evolution in monoclinic WO3 is directly imaged via in situ scanning transmission electron microscope. It is found that the CS planes nucleate preferentially at the edge step defects and proceed by the cooperative migration of WO6 octahedrons along particular crystallographic orientations, passing through a series of intermediate states. The local reconstruction of atomic columns tends to form (102) CS planes featured with four edge-sharing octahedrons in preference to the (103) planes, which matches well with the theoretical calculations. Associated with the structure evolution, the sample undergoes a semiconductor-to-metal transition. In addition, the controlled growth of CS planes and V-shaped CS structures can be achieved by artificial defects for the first time. These findings enable an atomic-scale understanding of CS structure evolution dynamics.

Strong Metal-Support Interaction Facilitated Multicomponent Alloy Formation on Metal Oxide Support

Multicomponent alloy (MA) contains a nearly infinite number of unprecedented active sites through entropy stabilization, which is a desired platform for exploring high-performance catalysts. However, MA catalysts are usually synthesized under severe conditions, which induce support structure collapse and further deteriorate the synergy between MA and support. We propose that a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) could facilitate the formation of MA by establishing a tunnel of oxygen vacancy for metal atom transport under low reduction temperature (400-600 °C), which exemplifies the holistic design of MA catalysts without deactivating supports. PtPdCoFe MA is readily synthesized on anatase TiO2 with the help of SMSI, which exhibits good catalytic activity and stability for methane combustion. This strategy demonstrates excellent universality on various supports and multicomponent alloy compositions. Our work not only reports a holistic synthesis strategy for MA synthesis by synergizing unique properties of reducible oxides and the mixing entropy of alloy but also offers a new insight that SMSI plays a vigorous role in the formation of alloy NPs on reducible oxides.

The Effect of Chemical Environment and Temperature on the Domain Structure of Free-Standing BaTiO3 via In Situ STEM

Ferroelectrics, due to their polar nature and reversible switching, can be used to dynamically control surface chemistry for catalysis, chemical switching, and other applications such as water splitting. However, this is a complex phenomenon where ferroelectric domain orientation and switching are intimately linked to surface charges. In this work, the temperature-induced domain behavior of ferroelectric-ferroelastic domains in free-standing BaTiO3 films under different gas environments, including vacuum and oxygen-rich, is studied by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). An automated pathway to statistically disentangle and detect domain structure transformations using deep autoencoders, providing a pathway towards real-time analysis is also established. These results show a clear difference in the temperature at which phase transition occurs and the domain behavior between various environments, with a peculiar domain reconfiguration at low temperatures, from a-c to a-a at ≈60 °C. The vacuum environment exhibits a rich domain structure, while under the oxidizing environment, the domain structure is largely suppressed. The direct visualization provided by in situ gas and heating STEM allows to investigate the influence of external variables such as gas, pressure, and temperature, on oxide surfaces in a dynamic manner, providing invaluable insights into the intricate surface-screening mechanisms in ferroelectrics.

Direct Evidence of Dynamic Metal Support Interactions in Co/TiO2 Catalysts by Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The interaction between metal particles and the oxide support, the so-called metal-support interaction, plays a critical role in the performance of heterogenous catalysts. Probing the dynamic evolution of these interactions under reactive gas atmospheres is crucial to comprehending the structure-performance relationship and eventually designing new catalysts with enhanced properties. Cobalt supported on TiO2 (Co/TiO2) is an industrially relevant catalyst applied in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Although it is widely acknowledged that Co/TiO2 is restructured during the reaction process, little is known about the impact of the specific gas phase environment at the material's surface. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopies are used to investigate in situ Co particles supported on pure and NaBH4-modified TiO2 under H2, O2, and CO2:H2 gas atmospheres. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission methods, which allows for simultaneous probing of the chemical composition of surface and subsurface layers, is one of the study's unique features. It is shown that under H2, cobalt particles are encapsulated below a stoichiometric TiO2 layer. This arrangement is preserved under CO2 hydrogenation conditions (i.e., CO2:H2), but changes rapidly upon exposure to O2. The pretreatment of the TiO2 support with NaBH4 affects the surface mobility and prevents TiO2 spillover onto Co particles.

Oxygen Vacancy-Induced Metal-Support Interactions in AuPd/ZrO2 Catalysts for Boosting 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation

The construction of strong metal-support interactions in oxide-supported noble metal nanocatalysts has been considered an emerging and efficient way in improving catalytic performance in biomass-upgrading reactions. Herein, a citric acid (CA)-assisted synthesized ZrO2 layer with improved oxygen vacancy (Ov) concentrations on a natural clay mineral of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was designed. Moreover, AuxPdy/ZrO2@HNTs-zCA catalysts were prepared by loading AuPd bimetal and employed for aerobic oxidation of the lignocellulosic biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) platform to the bioplastic monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with water as the solvent. The results of catalytic experiments revealed that the Au3Pd1/ZrO2@HNTs-1.0CA catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity at 0.5 MPa O2, with a satisfactory FDCA yield of 99.5% and outstanding FDCA formation rate of 1057.9 mmol·g-1·h-1. The improved Ov concentration in the ZrO2 support enhanced the adsorption and activation ability of the catalyst for O2, and a higher Lewis acid concentration provided a stronger adsorption ability of the catalyst for reaction substrates. Besides, the synergistic effect of AuPd bimetallic nanoparticles steered the tandem oxidation of aldehyde and alcohol groups in HMF and accelerated the rate-determining step. More importantly, the relationship between the Ov concentration and catalytic performance also demonstrated that the enhanced catalytic activity for HMF oxidation was mainly attributed to the active interface of AuPd-ZrOx. This work offers fresh insights into rationally designing oxygen vacancy-driven strong interactions between the oxide support and noble nanoparticles for the catalytic upgrade of biomass platform chemicals.

Low Ruthenium Content Confined on Boron Carbon Nitride as an Efficient and Stable Electrocatalyst for Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

To date, only a few noble metal oxides exhibit the required efficiency and stability as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts under the acidic, high-voltage conditions that exist during proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). The high cost and scarcity of these catalysts hinder the large-scale application of PEMWE. Here, we report a novel OER electrocatalyst for OER comprised of uniformly dispersed Ru clusters confined on boron carbon nitride (BCN) support. Compared to RuO2 , our BCN-supported catalyst shows enhanced charge transfer. It displays a low overpotential of 164 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , suggesting its excellent OER catalytic activity. This catalyst was able to operate continuously for over 12 h under acidic conditions, whereas RuO2 without any support fails in 1 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the interaction between the N on BCN support and Ru clusters changes the adsorption capacity and reduces the OER energy barrier, which increases the electrocatalytic activity of Ru.

Quantitative Analysis of the Interface between Titanium Dioxide Support and Noble Metal by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

The interface structure of supported catalysts plays a significant role in the strong metal-support interactions (SMSI). However, it remains limited on interpreting interface structures, thus affecting the understanding of SMSI origin and impact on catalytic performance. Herein, electronic energy loss spectroscopy was adopted to characterize the interface microstructures of Pt/TiO2 materials. After high-temperature reduction processing, it was observed that the coating on the surface of the Pt metal particles was TiOx. Then, based on Gaussian function fitting, an effective and valid method was established for quantitative analysis on Ti L edge loss spectrum. This method allowed us to accurately determine the stoichiometric number of TiOx phases. In order to probe the classical phenomenon of strong metal-support interactions in more detail, we also discussed and analyzed the origin of TiOx and its effect on the electronic structure of the material using density functional theory calculations. The structure of surfaces and interfaces as well as the chemical evolution of supported catalysts on a microscale have been revealed, thereby providing a new analysis method and research perspectives for the future study of metal-support interactions.

Phase Segregation in PdCu Alloy Nanoparticles During CO Oxidation Reaction at Atmospheric Pressure

Bimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are widely used in many heterogeneous gas-based reactions because they often outperform their monometallic counterparts. During these reactions, NPs often undergo structural changes, which impact their catalytic activity. Despite the important role of the structure in the catalytic activity, many aspects of how a reactive gaseous environment affects the structure of bimetallic nanocatalysts are still lacking. Here, using gas-cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it is shown that during a CO oxidation reaction over PdCu alloy NPs, the selective oxidation of Cu causes the segregation of Cu and transforms the NPs into Pd-CuO NPs. The segregated NPs are very stable and have high activity for the conversion of CO into CO2 . Based on the observations, the segregation of Cu from Cu-based alloys during a redox reaction is likely to be general and may have a positive impact on the catalytic activity. Hence, it is believed that similar insights based on direct observation of the reactions under relevant reactive conditions are critical both for understanding and designing high-performance catalysts.

Visualizing interfacial collective reaction behaviour of Li-S batteries

Benefiting from high energy density (2,600 Wh kg-1) and low cost, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered promising candidates for advanced energy-storage systems1-4. Despite tremendous efforts in suppressing the long-standing shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides5-7, understanding of the interfacial reactions of lithium polysulfides at the nanoscale remains elusive. This is mainly because of the limitations of in situ characterization tools in tracing the liquid-solid conversion of unstable lithium polysulfides at high temporal-spatial resolution8-10. There is an urgent need to understand the coupled phenomena inside Li-S batteries, specifically, the dynamic distribution, aggregation, deposition and dissolution of lithium polysulfides. Here, by using in situ liquid-cell electrochemical transmission electron microscopy, we directly visualized the transformation of lithium polysulfides over electrode surfaces at the atomic scale. Notably, an unexpected gathering-induced collective charge transfer of lithium polysulfides was captured on the nanocluster active-centre-immobilized surface. It further induced an instantaneous deposition of nonequilibrium Li2S nanocrystals from the dense liquid phase of lithium polysulfides. Without mediation of active centres, the reactions followed a classical single-molecule pathway, lithium polysulfides transforming into Li2S2 and Li2S step by step. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the long-range electrostatic interaction between active centres and lithium polysulfides promoted the formation of a dense phase consisting of Li+ and Sn2- (2 < n ≤ 6), and the collective charge transfer in the dense phase was further verified by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The collective interfacial reaction pathway unveils a new transformation mechanism and deepens the fundamental understanding of Li-S batteries.

On-chip gas reaction nanolab for in situ TEM observation

The catalysis reaction mechanism at nano/atomic scale attracted intense attention in the past decades. However, most in situ characterization technologies can only reflect the average information of catalysts, which leads to the inability to characterize the dynamic changes of single nanostructures or active sites under operando conditions, and many micro-nanoscale reaction mechanisms are still unknown. The combination of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder system with MEMS chips provides a solution for it, where the design and fabrication of MEMS chips are the key factors. Here, with the aid of finite element simulation, an ultra-stable heating chip was developed, which has an ultra-low thermal drift during temperature heating. Under ambient conditions within TEM, atomic resolution imaging was achieved during the heating process or at high temperature up to 1300 °C. Combined with the developed polymer membrane seal technique and nanofluidic control system, it can realize an adjustable pressure from 0.1 bar to 4 bar gas environment around the sample. By using the developed ultra-low drift gas reaction cells, the nanoparticle's structure evolution at atomic scale was identified during reaction.

Direct Observation of Ni Nanoparticle Growth in Carbon-Supported Nickel under Carbon Dioxide Hydrogenation Atmosphere

Understanding nanoparticle growth is crucial to increase the lifetime of supported metal catalysts. In this study, we employ in situ gas-phase transmission electron microscopy to visualize the movement and growth of ensembles of tens of nickel nanoparticles supported on carbon for CO2 hydrogenation at atmospheric pressure (H2:CO2 = 4:1) and relevant temperature (450 °C) in real time. We observe two modes of particle movement with an order of magnitude difference in velocity: fast, intermittent movement (vmax = 0.7 nm s-1) and slow, gradual movement (vaverage = 0.05 nm s-1). We visualize the two distinct particle growth mechanisms: diffusion and coalescence, and Ostwald ripening. The diffusion and coalescence mechanism dominates at small interparticle distances, whereas Ostwald ripening is driven by differences in particle size. Strikingly, we demonstrate an interplay between the two mechanisms, where first coalescence takes place, followed by fast Ostwald ripening due to the increased difference in particle size. Our direct visualization of the complex nanoparticle growth mechanisms highlights the relevance of studying nanoparticle growth in supported nanoparticle ensembles under reaction conditions and contributes to the fundamental understanding of the stability in supported metal catalysts.

Thermodynamically and Kinetically Stabilized Pt Clusters Against Sintering on CeO2 Nanofibers Through Enclosing CeO2 Nanocubes

Sintering is a major concern for the deactivation of supported metals catalysts, which is driven by the force of decreasing the total surface energy of the entire catalytic system. In this work, a double-confinement strategy is demonstrated to stabilize 2.6 nm-Pt clusters against sintering on electrospun CeO2 nanofibers decorated by CeO2 nanocubes (m-CeO2 ). Thermodynamically, with the aid of CeO2 -nanocubes, the intrinsically irregular surface of polycrystalline CeO2 nanofibers becomes smooth, offering adjacent Pt clusters with decreased chemical potential differences on a relatively uniform surface. Kinetically, the Pt clusters are physically restricted on each facet of CeO2 nanocubes in a nanosized region. In situ high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) observation reveals that the Pt clusters can be stabilized up to 800 °C even in a high density, which is far beyond their Tammann temperature, without observable size growth or migration. Such a sinter-resistant catalytic system is endowed with boosted catalytic activity toward both the hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol after being aged at 500 °C and the sinter-promoting exothermic oxidation reactions (e.g., soot oxidation) at high temperatures over 700 °C. This work offers new opportunities for exploring sinter-resistant nanocatalysts, starting from the rational design of whole catalytic system in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic aspects.

Recent advances in in-situ transmission electron microscopy techniques for heterogeneous catalysis

The process of heterogeneous catalytic reaction under working conditions has long been considered a "black box", which is mainly because of the difficulties in directly characterizing the structural changes of catalysts at the atomic level during catalytic reactions. The development of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques offers opportunities for introducing a realistic chemical reaction environment in TEM, making it possible to uncover the mystery of catalytic reactions. In this article, we present a comprehensive overview of the application of in situ TEM techniques in heterogeneous catalysis, highlighting its utility for observing gas-solid and liquid-solid reactions during thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. in situ TEM has a unique advantage in revealing the complex structural changes of catalysts during chemical reactions. Revealing the real-time dynamic structure during reaction processes is crucial for understanding the intricate relationship between catalyst structure and its catalytic performance. Finally, we present a perspective on the future challenges and opportunities of in situ TEM in heterogeneous catalysis.

In Situ and Emerging Transmission Electron Microscopy for Catalysis Research

Catalysts are the primary facilitator in many dynamic processes. Therefore, a thorough understanding of these processes has vast implications for a myriad of energy systems. The scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) is a powerful tool not only for atomic-scale characterization but also in situ catalytic experimentation. Techniques such as liquid and gas phase electron microscopy allow the observation of catalysts in an environment conducive to catalytic reactions. Correlated algorithms can greatly improve microscopy data processing and expand multidimensional data handling. Furthermore, new techniques including 4D-STEM, atomic electron tomography, cryogenic electron microscopy, and monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) push the boundaries of our comprehension of catalyst behavior. In this review, we discuss the existing and emergent techniques for observing catalysts using S/TEM. Challenges and opportunities highlighted aim to inspire and accelerate the use of electron microscopy to further investigate the complex interplay of catalytic systems.

A strong bimetal-support interaction in ethanol steam reforming

The metal-support interaction (MSI) in heterogeneous catalysts plays a crucial role in reforming reaction to produce renewable hydrogen, but conventional objects are limited to single metal and support. Herein, we report a type of RhNi/TiO₂ catalysts with tunable RhNi-TiO₂ strong bimetal-support interaction (SBMSI) derived from structure topological transformation of RhNiTi-layered double hydroxides (RhNiTi-LDHs) precursors. The resulting 0.5RhNi/TiO₂ catalyst (with 0.5 wt.% Rh) exhibits extraordinary catalytic performance toward ethanol steam reforming (ESR) reaction with a H₂ yield of 61.7%, a H₂ production rate of 12.2 L h^-1 g_cat^-1 and a high operational stability (300 h), which is preponderant to the state-of-the-art catalysts. By virtue of synergistic catalysis of multifunctional interface structure (Rh-Ni^δ--O_v-Ti³⁺; O_v denotes oxygen vacancy), the generation of formate intermediate (the rate-determining step in ESR reaction) from steam reforming of CO and CH_x is significantly promoted on 0.5RhNi/TiO₂ catalyst, accounting for its ultra-high H₂ production.

Imaging Interface and Particle Size Effects by In Situ Correlative Microscopy of a Catalytic Reaction

The catalytic behavior of Rh particles supported by three different materials (Rh, Au, and ZrO₂) in H₂ oxidation has been studied in situ by correlative photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) and scanning photoemission electron microscopy (SPEM). Kinetic transitions between the inactive and active steady states were monitored, and self-sustaining oscillations on supported Rh particles were observed. Catalytic performance differed depending on the support and Rh particle size. Oscillations varied from particle size-independent (Rh/Rh) via size-dependent (Rh/ZrO₂) to fully inhibited (Rh/Au). For Rh/Au, the formation of a surface alloy induced such effects, whereas for Rh/ZrO₂, the formation of substoichiometric Zr oxides on the Rh surface, enhanced oxygen bonding, Rh-oxidation, and hydrogen spillover onto the ZrO₂ support were held responsible. The experimental observations were complemented by micro-kinetic simulations, based on variations of hydrogen adsorption and oxygen binding. The results demonstrate how correlative in situ surface microscopy enables linking of the local structure, composition, and catalytic performance.

Restructuring of titanium oxide overlayers over nickel nanoparticles during catalysis

Reducible supports can affect the performance of metal catalysts by the formation of suboxide overlayers upon reduction, a process referred to as the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). A combination of operando electron microscopy and vibrational spectroscopy revealed that thin TiO_x overlayers formed on nickel/titanium dioxide catalysts during 400°C reduction were completely removed under carbon dioxide hydrogenation conditions. Conversely, after 600°C reduction, exposure to carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction conditions led to only partial reexposure of nickel, forming interfacial sites in contact with TiO_x and favoring carbon-carbon coupling by providing a carbon species reservoir. Our findings challenge the conventional understanding of SMSIs and call for more-detailed operando investigations of nanocatalysts at the single-particle level to revisit static models of structure-activity relationships.

Memory-dictated dynamics of single-atom Pt on CeO2 for CO oxidation

Single atoms of platinum group metals on CeO₂ represent a potential approach to lower precious metal requirements for automobile exhaust treatment catalysts. Here we show the dynamic evolution of two types of single-atom Pt (Pt₁) on CeO₂, i.e., adsorbed Pt₁ in Pt/CeO₂ and square planar Pt₁ in Pt_ATCeO₂, fabricated at 500 °C and by atom-trapping method at 800 °C, respectively. Adsorbed Pt₁ in Pt/CeO₂ is mobile with the in situ formation of few-atom Pt clusters during CO oxidation, contributing to high reactivity with near-zero reaction order in CO. In contrast, square planar Pt₁ in Pt_ATCeO₂ is strongly anchored to the support during CO oxidation leading to relatively low reactivity with a positive reaction order in CO. Reduction of both Pt/CeO₂ and Pt_ATCeO₂ in CO transforms Pt₁ to Pt nanoparticles. However, both catalysts retain the memory of their initial Pt₁ state after reoxidative treatments, which illustrates the importance of the initial single-atom structure in practical applications.

Does Cluster Encapsulation Inhibit Sintering? Stabilization of Size-Selected Pt Clusters on Fe3O4(001) by SMSI

The metastability of supported metal nanoparticles limits their application in heterogeneous catalysis at elevated temperatures due to their tendency to sinter. One strategy to overcome these thermodynamic limits on reducible oxide supports is encapsulation via strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). While annealing-induced encapsulation is a well-explored phenomenon for extended nanoparticles, it is as yet unknown whether the same mechanisms hold for subnanometer clusters, where concomitant sintering and alloying might play a significant role. In this article, we explore the encapsulation and stability of size-selected Pt5, Pt10, and Pt19 clusters deposited on Fe3O4(001). In a multimodal approach using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we demonstrate that SMSI indeed leads to the formation of a defective, FeO-like conglomerate encapsulating the clusters. By stepwise annealing up to 1023 K, we observe the succession of encapsulation, cluster coalescence, and Ostwald ripening, resulting in square-shaped crystalline Pt particles, independent of the initial cluster size. The respective sintering onset temperatures scale with the cluster footprint and thus size. Remarkably, while small encapsulated clusters can still diffuse as a whole, atom detachment and thus Ostwald ripening are successfully suppressed up to 823 K, i.e., 200 K above the Hüttig temperature that indicates the thermodynamic stability limit.

Controllable CO2 Reduction or Hydrocarbon Oxidation Driven by Entire Solar via Silver Quantum Dots Direct Photocatalysis

The current solar-chemical-industry based on semiconductor photocatalyst is impractical. Metal catalysts are extensively employed in thermal- and electro-catalysis industries, but unsuitable for direct-driven photocatalysis. Herein, silver quantum dots (Ag-QDs) are synthesized on support via an in situ photoreduction method, and in situ photocatalysis temperature programmed dynamics chemisorption desorption analyses are designed to demonstrate that Ag-QDs should be the actual photocatalytic sites. The surface plasmon resonance of Ag-QDs could harvests entire visible solar, and the plasmon-driven charge-transfer exhibits opposite directions at the interface when supports are different. Consequently, Ag-QDs could be alternatively regulated as oxidation or reduction active centers. Furthermore, Ag-QDs excite electron tunneling transfer with adsorbate, which does not generate high-energy free-radical intermediates. As a result, the efficiencies of hydrocarbon photooxidation and CO₂ photoreduction are improved in several orders of magnitude. Evidently, the Ag-QDs direct photocatalytic technology greatly promotes solar-chemical-industry applications.

Insights into the Synthesis Mechanisms of Ag-Cu3P-GaP Multicomponent Nanoparticles

Metal-semiconductor nanoparticle heterostructures are exciting materials for photocatalytic applications. Phase and facet engineering are critical for designing highly efficient catalysts. Therefore, understanding processes occurring during the nanostructure synthesis is crucial to gain control over properties such as the surface and interface facets' orientations, morphology, and crystal structure. However, the characterization of nanostructures after the synthesis makes clarifying their formation mechanisms nontrivial and sometimes even impossible. In this study, we used an environmental transmission electron microscope with an integrated metal-organic chemical vapor deposition system to enlighten fundamental dynamic processes during the Ag-Cu₃P-GaP nanoparticle synthesis using Ag-Cu₃P seed particles. Our results reveal that the GaP phase nucleated at the Cu₃P surface, and growth proceeded via a topotactic reaction involving counter-diffusion of Cu⁺ and Ga³⁺ cations. After the initial GaP growth steps, the Ag and Cu₃P phases formed specific interfaces with the GaP growth front. GaP growth proceeded by a similar mechanism observed for the nucleation involving the diffusion of Cu atoms through/along the Ag phase toward other regions, followed by the redeposition of Cu₃P at a specific Cu₃P crystal facet, not in contact with the GaP phase. The Ag phase was essential for this process by acting as a medium enabling the efficient transport of Cu atoms away from and, simultaneously, Ga atoms toward the GaP-Cu₃P interface. This study shows that enlightening fundamental processes is critical for progress in synthesizing phase- and facet-engineered multicomponent nanoparticles with tailored properties for specific applications, including catalysis.

Defects Tune the Strong Metal-Support Interactions in Copper Supported on Defected Titanium Dioxide Catalysts for CO2 Reduction

A highly active and stable Cu-based catalyst for CO₂ to CO conversion was demonstrated by creating a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Cu active sites and the TiO₂-coated dendritic fibrous nano-silica (DFNS/TiO₂) support. The DFNS/TiO₂-Cu10 catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance with a CO productivity of 5350 mmol g^-1 h^-1 (i.e., 53,506 mmol g_Cu^-1 h^-1), surpassing that of almost all copper-based thermal catalysts, with 99.8% selectivity toward CO. Even after 200 h of reaction, the catalyst remained active. Moderate initial agglomeration and high dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) due to SMSI made the catalysts stable. Electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed the strong interactions between copper NPs and the TiO₂ surface, supported by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The H₂-temperature programmed reduction (TPR) study showed α, β, and γ H₂-TPR signals, further confirming the presence of SMSI between Cu and TiO₂. In situ Raman and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy studies provided insights into the role of oxygen vacancies and Ti³⁺ centers, which were produced by hydrogen, then consumed by CO₂, and then again regenerated by hydrogen. These continuous defect generation-regeneration processes during the progress of the reaction allowed long-term high catalytic activity and stability. The in situ studies and oxygen storage complete capacity indicated the key role of oxygen vacancies during catalysis. The in situ time-resolved Fourier transform infrared study provided an understanding of the formation of various reaction intermediates and their conversion to products with reaction time. Based on these observations, we have proposed a CO₂ reduction mechanism, which follows a redox pathway assisted by hydrogen.

Approaching Elaborate Control of the Nano-Products of Carbothermal Reduction Reaction Through In Situ Identification

Atomic understanding of a chemical reaction can realize the programmable design and synthesis of desired products with specific compositions and structures. Through directly monitoring the phase transition and tracking the dynamic evolution of atoms in a chemical reaction, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques offer the feasibility of revealing the reaction kinetics at the atomic level. Nevertheless, such investigation is quite challenging, especially for reactions involving multi-phase and complex interfaces, such as the widely adopted carbothermal reduction (CTR) reactions. Herein, in-situ TEM is applied to monitor the CTR of Co₃ O₄ nanocubes on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets. Together with the first-principle calculation, the migration route of Co atoms during the phase transition of the CTR reaction is revealed. Meanwhile, the interfacial edge-dislocations/stress-gradient is identified as a result of the atomistic diffusion, which in turn can affect the morphology variation of the reactants. Accordingly, controllable synthesis of Co-based nanostructure with a desirable phase and structure has been achieved. This work not only provides atomic kinetic insight into CTR reactions but also offers a novel strategy for the design and synthesis of functional nanostructures for emerging energy technologies.

Shape-Controlled Synthesis of Platinum-Based Nanocrystals and Their Electrocatalytic Applications in Fuel Cells

To achieve environmentally benign energy conversion with the carbon neutrality target via electrochemical reactions, the innovation of electrocatalysts plays a vital role in the enablement of renewable resources. Nowadays, Pt-based nanocrystals (NCs) have been identified as one class of the most promising candidates to efficiently catalyze both the half-reactions in hydrogen- and hydrocarbon-based fuel cells. Here, we thoroughly discuss the key achievement in developing shape-controlled Pt and Pt-based NCs, and their electrochemical applications in fuel cells. We begin with a mechanistic discussion on how the morphology can be precisely controlled in a colloidal system, followed by highlighting the advanced development of shape-controlled Pt, Pt-alloy, Pt-based core@shell NCs, Pt-based nanocages, and Pt-based intermetallic compounds. We then select some case studies on models of typical reactions (oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode and small molecular oxidation reaction at the anode) that are enhanced by the shape-controlled Pt-based nanocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook on the potential challenges of shape-controlled nanocatalysts and envision their perspective with suggestions.

Cooperative Characterization of In Situ TEM and Cantilever-TGA to Optimize Calcination Conditions of MnO2 Nanowire Precursors

Calcination plays a vital role during material preparation. However, the calcination conditions have often been determined empirically or have been based on trial and error. Herein we present a cooperative characterization approach to optimize calcination conditions by gas-cell in situ TEM in collaboration with microcantilever-based thermogravimetric analysis (cantilever-TGA) techniques. The morphological evolution of precursors under atmospheric conditions is observed with in situ TEM, and the right calcination temperature is provided by cantilever-TGA. The proposed approach successfully optimizes the calcination conditions of fragile MnO₂ nanowire precursors with multiple valence products. The cantilever-TGA shows that a calcination temperature above 560 °C is required to transform the MnO₂ precursor to Mn₃O₄ under an N₂ atmosphere, but the in situ TEM indicates that the nanowire structure is destroyed within only 30 min under calcination conditions. Our method further suggests that heating the precursor at 400 °C using an H₂-containing atmosphere can produce Mn₃O₄ nanowires with good electrical properties.

Mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt3Ni core-shell framework nanowire electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction

The design of Pt-based nanoarchitectures with controllable compositions and morphologies is necessary to enhance their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a rational design and synthesis of anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt₃Ni core-shell framework nanowires for high-efficient electrocatalysis. The catalyst has a uniform core-shell structure with an ultrathin atomic-jagged Pt nanowire core and a mesoporous Pt-skin Pt₃Ni framework shell, possessing high electrocatalytic activity, stability and Pt utilisation efficiency. For the oxygen reduction reaction, the anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt₃Ni core-shell framework nanowires demonstrated exceptional mass and specific activities of 6.69 A/mg_pt and 8.42 mA/cm² (at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode), and the catalyst exhibited high stability with negligible activity decay after 50,000 cycles. The mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt₃Ni core-shell framework nanowire configuration combines the advantages of three-dimensional open mesopore molecular accessibility and compressive Pt-skin surface strains, which results in more catalytically active sites and weakened chemisorption of oxygenated species, thus boosting its catalytic activity and stability towards electrocatalysis.

Single-atom catalysts for hydroformylation of olefins

Hydroformylation is one of the most significant homogeneous reactions. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, heterogeneous catalysts are easy to be separated from the system. However, heterogeneous catalysis faces the problems of low activity and poor chemical/regional selectivity. Therefore, there are theoretical and practical significance to develop efficient heterogeneous catalysts. SACs can be widely applied in hydroformylation in the future, due to the high atom utilization efficiency, stable active sites, easy separation, and recovery. In this review, the recent advances of SACs for hydroformylation are summarized. The regulation of microstructure affected on the reactivity, stability of SACs, and chem/regioselectivity of SACs for hydroformylation are discussed. The support effect, ligand effect, and electron effect on the performance of SACs are proposed, and the catalytic mechanism of SACs is elaborated. Finally, we summarize the current challenges in this field, and propose the design and research ideas of SACs for hydroformylation of olefins.
