Abstract
BACKGROUND While the associations between pediatric non-obese metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and multiple diagnostic biomarkers are well-established, the role of a broader range of blood-based, urine-based, and body composition-based biomarkers for monitoring MAFLD are needed. METHODS A pediatric cohort was established in Wuxi, China. We measured body composition biomarkers, blood-based and urine-based biomarkers, and liver stiffness in participants to diagnose MAFLD and identify alternative and novel potential biomarkers for MAFLD. Body mass index (BMI), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), triglycerides, glucose, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and waist perimeter were used as MAFLD diagnostic biomarkers. To identify alternative biomarkers, we performed correlation analysis to determine biomarkers exhibited strong correlation (|r| > 0.8, p-value < 0.05) with diagnostic biomarkers. To identify novel potential biomarkers, we performed regression analysis to determine biomarkers associated with MAFLD (p-value < 0.05 in stepwise multivariate regression) among the remaining biomarkers that are not related to the diagnostic biomarkers. RESULTS Out of 1,108 participants who completed all examinations (N biomarker = 91), 113 participants were diagnosed with MAFLD (prevalence: 14.99% in boys and 5.18% in girls). 27 biomarkers that were strongly correlated with diagnostic biomarkers were identified as alternative biomarkers. A multivariate logistic regression analysis identified 9 novel potential biomarkers including 5 blood-based biomarkers (plateletocrit, calcium, insulin, AST/ALT ratio, total bilirubin), urine pH, and body fat measurements in the arm, leg, and thigh. CONCLUSIONS This study illustrated the characteristics and potential alternative and novel biomarkers of MAFLD based on a Chinese paediatric cohort. These findings posed new paths in guiding the prevention and early diagnosis and prevention. TRIAL REGISTRATION This trial was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trials Registry (ChiCTR2400080508). Abstract
BACKGROUND The global burden of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has significantly risen over the past decade. Dietary intake strongly influences its development and should be a component of any prevention and treatment plan strategy. Dietary pattern analysis enables the investigation of the overall diet and permits the consideration of interactions and cumulative effects of dietary components. The current study aimed to systematically review observational studies and intervention trials to determine the associations between various dietary patterns and NAFLD. METHODS The protocol was written according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. We included studies that reported a priori dietary pattern (i.e., diet quality scores) or a posteriori method, which identified existing eating patterns (i.e., principal component analysis) in adult participants. Two investigators conducted independent screening, extraction, and quality assessment using the Newcastle‒Ottawa or Jadad scale. A third reviewer resolved conflicts. RESULTS We identified 27 relevant observational and 16 interventional studies from 16 countries. A Mediterranean or DASH diet might prevent and improve NAFLD, whereas dietary patterns such as Western dietary patterns characterized by high consumption of sweets and animal foods such as red meat and fast food are positively associated with NAFLD. A low-carbohydrate diet effectively prevents and treats NAFLD; however, we need more research on the effects of a low-fat diet and the type of fats. CONCLUSION Healthy dietary patterns, mainly plant-based or adjusted macronutrient distributions, such as the adoption of a low-carbohydrate diet, are linked to a reduced risk of NAFLD and could halt its progression. We proposed recommendations for future studies to fill the gap in knowledge regarding the management of NAFLD via dietary modifications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although adherence to a healthy dietary pattern is one of the primary recommendations for the prevention of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), there is still no conclusive evidence of which specific dietary pattern is best. The Lifelines diet score (LLDS) is a new, evidence-based scoring system to determine diet quality, and its association with PCOS has not been investigated. The present study aimed to assess the association between LLDS and PCOS in Iranian women. MATERIALS AND METHODS This frequency-matched case-control study was carried out on 108 women with PCOS and 108 women without PCOS as a control group in Yazd, Iran. Healthy controls were matched to PCOS women based on age and BMI. The validated 178-item food frequency questionnaire was used to assess the usual dietary intake. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between LLDS and PCOS. RESULTS The findings of the present study showed women in the highest tertile of LLDS compared with the participants in the lowest tertile had 90% lower odds of PCOS (Odds Ratio (OR): 0.10; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.04 to 0.21, p for trend: <0.001). This association remained significant after adjustment for energy intake, marital status, pregnancy history, WC, chronic disease history, physical activity, and BMI (Odds Ratio (OR): 0.11; 95% (CI):0.05 to 0.27, p for trend: <0.001). CONCLUSION Although the present study found a significant protective association between adherence to LLDS and PCOS, more mechanism-based studies are needed to confirm these findings in the future.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is expanding as a global health problem with approximately 25% of the world's population affected by it. Dietary modification is one of the most important strategies for preventing NAFLD. The association between nutrient density and the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI2015) with NAFLD demonstrates that nutrient density is an independent predictor of NAFLD in Iranian adults [fully adjusted model: OR (95% CI)tertile3vs.1: 0.68 (0.54-0.85), P for trend = 0.001]. However, a favorable association between NAFDL and diet quality (HEI 2015) is more pronounced in participants with abdominal obesity [fully adjusted model: OR (95% CI)tertile3vs.1: 0.63 (0.41-0.98), P for trend = 0.03]. Based on the gender-stratified path analysis, diet quality indirectly through Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and metabolic syndrome in women, and men through WHtR, hemoglobin A1c (HBA1c), CRP, and metabolic syndrome affects NAFLD. Nutrient density directly and indirectly in women through WHtR, CRP, and metabolic syndrome, and in men indirectly through WHtR, hemoglobin A1c, and metabolic syndrome negatively affect NAFLD. Hence, in these subjects; we can provide early dietary intervention and education to prevent progression to NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders are common problems among participants with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the association between these problems and the healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015) remains unknown. Although the HEI-2015 originated from American dietary guidelines, its comprehensive evaluation of diet quality provides valuable insights for various populations, including Iranians. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the association between anthropometric, hepatic, and cardio-metabolic indices with HEI-2015 scores in participants with NAFLD. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study, which included adults aged 35 to 70 years between 2016 and 2018. A total of 664 participant with NAFLD (452 females and 212 males) were included in the analysis. The HEI-2015 was assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Various indices, including the body shape index (ABSI), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), cardiometabolic index (CMI), lipoprotein combine index (LCI), AST/ALT ratio, ALD/NAFLD index, and hepatic steatosis index (HSI), were calculated. RESULTS No significant differences were observed in anthropometric, cardio-metabolic, and hepatic indices across the quartiles of HEI-2015. However, among participants with NAFLD, men had significantly higher AIP and LCI levels, while women had significantly higher BMI, ABSI, VAI, LAP, and CMI levels. Additionally, women with NAFLD exhibited higher AST/ALT and HSI levels but lower ALD/NAFLD levels compared to men with NAFLD. Linear regression analysis among men with NAFLD revealed a significant negative correlation between HEI-2015 score and HSI in both the unadjusted model (β=-0.131, SE = 0.058, p = 0.024) and the adjusted model for energy intake (β=-0.129, SE = 0.058, p = 0.028). CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated a correlation between lower HEI-2015 scores and an increased risk of steatosis in men with NAFLD. Moreover, our findings highlighted gender-related differences in NAFLD and cardio-metabolic disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Dietary diversity index is a useful evaluation index for examining the role of dietary pattern in predicting chronic diseases risk, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). In the present study, we aimed to examine the possible association of dietary diversity using US Healthy Food Diversity(US HFD) index and the NAFLD risk in Iranian adults. METHODS A total of 675 individuals (225 patients with NAFLD and 450 controls) aged 20-60 years were recruited for the current case-control study. Data on dietary intakes were determined using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and dietary diversity was calculated using the US HFD index. In patients with NAFLD, an ultrasound scan of the liver was used to detect NAFLD. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios(ORs) and 95 % confidence interval(CI) of NAFLD across tertiles of the US HFD index. RESULTS Mean ± SD age of the study population were 38.13 ± 8.85 years. The median (interquartile) score of the US HFD index in patients with NAFLD and healthy subjects was 0.08(0.07-0.09) and 0.09(0.08-0.10), respectively. In the age and sex-adjusted model, the odds of NAFLD were considerably reduced across tertiles of the US HFD index (OR:0.48; 95%CI:0.32-0.72, Ptrend<0.001). Also, in the final model, after adjusting for age, sex, waist-to-hip ratio, smoking, physical activity, marital status, socioeconomic status, and energy intake, the odds of NAFLD were significantly reduced across tertiles US HFD index (OR:0.55; 95%CI:0.31-0.97, Ptrend<0.001). Furthermore, for each SD increase in the US HFD index, the odds of NAFLD are reduced by 23 % (OR:0.77;95%CI:0.60-0.97,P-Value<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our findings revealed that greater adherence to dietary pattern with a high US HFD score, defined by higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, low-fat dairy, seeds, soya products, and plant oils may be related to reducing the odds of NAFLD.

Objectives There are only limited studies investigating the impact of dietary quality indicators, such as dietary quality index (DQI), dietary diversity score (DDS), and alternative healthy eating index (AHEI), on metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD). Furthermore, these indicators may have different components that could lead to varying results. Therefore, this study aims to assess the nutritional quality indicators and their potential association with MASLD. Methods The study included 128 recently diagnosed MASLD patients and 256 controls aged between 20 and 60 years. The dietary intake of participants was evaluated using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire that consisted of 168 items. In this study, the method used to evaluate dietary diversity was based on five main food groups, specifically bread and grains, vegetables, fruits, meat, and dairy. The AHEI-2010 was computed using data collected from the FFQ. Results After adjusting for confounders in the fully adjusted model, a significant negative correlation was observed between DDS and the risk of MASLD (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.20, 0.97). Participants in the top quartile of AHEI had a 76% lower risk of MASLD compared with those in the bottom quartile after controlling for all potential confounders in the fully adjusted model (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.12, 0.56). Conclusion The results of our study suggest that there is a significant association between adherence to a high-diversity diet and a reduced likelihood of developing MASLD. Similarly, we observed a similar association between adherence to the AHEI diet and a lower risk of MASLD.

Abstract
Epidemiologic evidence on metal mixtures and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is limited. We aimed to assess the relationship between multiple metal co-exposure and NAFLD among male adults in Northern China. We conducted a cohort-based case-control study with 648 NAFLD and 648 non-NAFLD males. Seven metal concentrations (calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc) were determined in the blood. We used logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) to estimate the associations between the single metal and NAFLD. The impact of metal mixtures was quantified by the environmental risk score (ERS) in the adaptive elastic-net regression, and the association with NAFLD was estimated by logistic regression. Age-adjusted RCS showed linear relationships between blood calcium, selenium, and NAFLD. Blood copper, iron, magnesium, and manganese were non-linearly associated with NAFLD. Single metal analysis observed significant relationships between calcium, copper, manganese, and NAFLD, with the adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for quartile 1 vs. quartile 4 of 1.99 (1.30, 3.05), 2.36 (1.52, 3.64), and 1.77 (1.22, 2.55), respectively. However, metal mixtures analysis revealed one squared term (copper [β = -0.146]) and five metal-metal interactions (calcium × copper [β = 0.200], copper × magnesium [β = 0.188], copper × selenium [β = 0.188], iron × magnesium [β = 0.143], magnesium × selenium [β = -0.297]) except the three main effects. Higher ERS indicated a higher risk for NAFLD when exposed to metal mixtures, with an adjusted odds ratio = 6.50 (95% confidence interval: 4.36-9.69) for quartile 4 vs. quartile 1. Mediation analysis suggested that 11.66% of the effect of ERS on NAFLD was suppressed by fasting blood glucose. Our results show that exposure to metal mixtures is associated with a higher risk for NAFLD than the single metal. Interactions between metals suggest the importance of balancing the various metals for health benefits. Prospective cohorts and mechanism studies need to confirm the findings.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and Ca/Mg ratio are associated with inflammation and metabolic disorders, but their relationship with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unclear. Thus, we aimed to explore the association between Ca, Mg, Ca/Mg ratio, and NAFLD in Chinese adults. We conducted a case-control study based on the Kailuan Cohort in China, including 1816 cases and 1111 gender- and age-matched controls. Dose-response relationships between blood Ca, Mg, Ca/Mg ratio, and NAFLD were evaluated using restricted cubic splines. Odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by logistic regression models. A negative association between blood Ca (overall association P < 0.001 and linear association P < 0.001) and NAFLD as well as Ca/Mg ratio (overall association P = 0.002 and linear association P = 0.024) and NAFLD was observed. Compared with the highest quartile, the adjusted OR (95% CI) for the lowest quartile of Ca and Ca/Mg ratio was 2.116 (1.679-2.667) and 1.358 (1.076-1.713), respectively. A U-shaped relationship was found for blood Mg and NAFLD, with the highest OR of 1.685 in the lowest quartile group when using the second quartile as a reference. Additionally, we observed the interaction between alanine aminotransferase and blood Ca (P = 0.024), total cholesterol (P = 0.017), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (P = 0.013), and blood Mg, as well as total cholesterol and Ca/Mg ratio (P = 0.014). Lower blood Ca and Ca/Mg ratio were significantly associated with the risk of NAFLD. Liver function or lipid metabolism parameters may modify their association, suggesting an individualized prevention strategy for NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study examines the association between the Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Iranian adults using structural equation modeling (SEM). METHODS A sample of 3220 adults from the Amol Cohort Study was recruited for this cross-sectional study. Dietary acid load (DAL) and DDS were calculated using the data obtained from a validated food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, biochemical measurements, and liver ultrasonography were evaluated according to standard protocols. RESULTS DDS was neither directly nor indirectly associated with a greater prevalence of NAFLD. In the second model (DDS sub-scores model), the association of DAL with NAFLD was fully mediated through waist circumference (WC) (of DAL to WC: β = 0.14, P < 0.0001, and of WC to NAFLD: β = 0.50, P < 0.001). Vegetable and fruit diversity scores had a significant negative indirect relationship with NAFLD prevalence through DAL (β = -0.06, P = 0.001, β = -0.10, P < 0.001, respectively). Meat diversity score was positively associated with NAFLD prevalence in a full mediational process through DAL (β = 0.12, P < 0.001). The SEM fit indices suggested a reasonably adequate fit of the data to the DDS model (Χ2/df = 4.76, GFI = 0.98, AGFI = 0.97, IFI = 0.97, CFI = 0.97, RMSEA = 0.03, and SRMR = 0.02) and its sub-scores model (Χ2/df = 4.72, GFI = 0.98, AGFI = 0.97, IFI = 0.95, CFI = 0.95, RMSEA = 0.03, and SRMR = 0.02). CONCLUSION Meat diversity and lack of vegetable and fruit diversity were indirectly associated with NAFLD prevalence through DAL and WC mediators. Interventions for NAFLD may be more successful if they target a lower intake of animal protein sources and dietary diversity, particularly vegetable and fruit diversity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Dietary factors play an important role in promoting nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development through regulation of metabolism and inflammation. However, so far there was no evidence regarding how dietary factors may influence different disease outcomes in the NAFLD to HCC progression. Our study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the role of dietary factors on the risk of progression from NAFLD to HCC. METHODS A comprehensive literature research was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases to identify case-control and cohort studies published up to March 15, 2022 in English. We included studies investigating associations of food and beverage items (excluding alcohol), food groups, dietary patterns, and dietary habits with incidence risk of four main chronic liver diseases involved in the NAFLD-to-HCC progression (i.e., NAFLD, liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, and HCC). Three researchers independently performed the literature search, selected eligible articles, performed data abstraction and evaluated study quality. After evaluating adequacy and credibility of the associations reported for each dietary factor and each liver disease outcome, we summarized and evaluated the consistency of associations based on a priori determined criteria considering study design and the proportion of significant associations. RESULTS There were 109 studies included in this review (47 on NAFLD, 1 on liver fibrosis, 6 on liver cirrhosis, and 55 on HCC). Consistent evidence suggested that higher dietary inflammatory potential was associated with increased risk of both NAFLD and HCC whereas Mediterranean diet was associated with lower risk of both diseases. Additionally, greater conformity to the Healthy Eating Index, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score, and Mediterranean Diet Score, and dietary patterns with high dietary antioxidant capacity reduced NAFLD risk. Some specific foods including soft drinks and red and/or processed meat were associated with increased NAFLD risk while total vegetables and spinach were associated with reduced NAFLD risk. Coffee and white meat consumption were inversely related to HCC risk. CONCLUSIONS Dietary patterns or individual foods representing a more anti-inflammatory potential were associated with reduced risk of both NAFLD and HCC, which implied diet-induced inflammation may impact NAFLD progression towards HCC.

Abstract
The effects of brewers’ spent grain (BSG) diets on the fatty liver deposition and the cecal microbial community were investigated in a total of 320 healthy 5-day-old Landes geese. These geese were randomly and evenly divided into 4 groups each containing 8 replicates and 10 geese per replicate. These four groups of geese were fed from the rearing stage (days 5–60) to the overfeeding stage (days 61–90). The Landes geese in group C (control) were fed with basal diet (days 5–90); group B fed first with basal diet in the rearing stage and then basal diet + 4% BSG in the overfeeding stage; group F first with basal diet + 4% BSG during the rearing stage and then basal diet in the overfeeding stage; and group W with basal diet + 4% BSG (days 5–90). The results showed that during the rearing stage, the body weight (BW) and the average daily gain (ADG) of Landes geese were significantly increased in groups F and W, while during the overfeeding stage, the liver weights of groups W and B were significantly higher than that of group C. The taxonomic structure of the intestinal microbiota revealed that during the overfeeding period, the relative abundance of Bacteroides in group W was increased compared to group C, while the relative abundances of Escherichia–Shigella and prevotellaceae_Ga6A1_group were decreased. Results of the transcriptomics analysis showed that addition of BSG to Landes geese diets altered the expression of genes involved in PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and sphingolipid metabolism in the liver. Our study provided novel experimental evidence based on the cecal microbiota to support the application of BSG in the regulation of fatty liver deposition by modulating the gut microbiota in Landes geese.

Abstract
Objectives Given the significance of dietary factors in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the association of NAFLD with salt intake and dietary diversity in a medical examination population aged 18–59 years. Methods Data from two Chinese health management centers were utilized between January 2017 and December 2019. The general information, laboratory tests, lifestyle habits, and diet of the participants were all evaluated. Based on alcohol consumption and abdominal ultrasound results, a total of 23,867 participants were divided into the NAFLD (n = 7,753) and control (n = 16,114) groups. Salt intake and dietary diversity were calculated separately for study participants using the spot urine method and dietary diversity scores (DDS). The multilevel logistic model and subgroup analysis were used to analyze the relationship between salt intake, dietary diversity, and NAFLD. Results We found that the prevalence of NAFLD was 32.48%. Salt intake was associated with increased NAFLD (Q2 vs. Q1: OR = 1.201, 95% CI 1.094-1.317, P < 0.001; Q3 vs. Q1: OR = 1.442, 95% CI 1.316-1.580, P < 0.001; Q4 vs. Q1: OR = 1.604, 95% CI 1.465-1.757, P < 0.001), whereas sufficient dietary diversity was a protective factor for NAFLD (Sufficient DDS vs. Insufficient DDS: OR: 0.706, 95% CI 0.517-0.965, P < 0.05). The effects of salt intake and dietary diversity on NAFLD were equally stable in the subgroup analysis. Conclusions We can conclude that NAFLD is highly prevalent in medical examination adults aged 18-59 years in China. Furthermore, the risk of salt intake for NAFLD and the protective effect of dietary diversity on NAFLD should be taken into account in the management of NAFLD.

Abstract
Purpose Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is caused by the increase of fat in the liver. The present study aimed to study the association between different dietary patterns and NAFLD in adults. Methods This study included 121 adult patients with NAFLD and 119 non-NAFLD. Dietary intake was calculated by a 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Biochemical markers were measured. Dietary patterns were determined by factor analysis. The association between dietary patterns and NAFLD was evaluated using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results Two dietary patterns (healthy, western) were recognized in participants. Western dietary pattern was related with 72 percent increase in the odds of NAFLD (OR: 1.72; 95% CI: 1.32,2.14), after adjustment for covariates. Healthy dietary pattern was associated with 38 percent lower odds of NAFLD (OR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.65). Adherence to the western diet was related to 0.486 greater amounts of ALT, 3.248 mg/dl higher levels of FBS, and 3.989 mg/dl greater amounts of TG and 2.354 mg/dl greater amounts of MDA after adjusting for confounding factors (p > 0.001, p = 0.042, p > 0.001, p = 0.036 respectively). The healthy dietary pattern score was negatively associated with FBS and Cholesterol and TG levels (p = 0.035, p = 0.048, and p = 0.025), respectively. Moreover, it was associated with 3.211 mg/dl higher levels of TAC (p = 0.049). Conclusions There is a significant relationship between dietary patterns and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Adherence to a western dietary pattern is related to an increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
Adhering to specific dietary patterns might hold promise as a lifestyle modification treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effect of dietary patterns on changes in hepatic fat content, liver enzymes and metabolic syndrome components. We searched Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science for randomised controlled trials published in English until April 2020, comparing a specific dietary pattern with no treatment, usual care, or a different diet in adults with NAFLD. Studies were included if NAFLD had been diagnosed using biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging, or proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Data from three trials in adults with NAFLD but without diabetes (n = 128; mean age 49.9 ± 5.0 years, range 42-55 years) were included in the qualitative synthesis; across them, risk of bias was considered low, unclear and high for 33%, 38% and 29% of domains, respectively. There was moderate evidence that a low-carbohydrate, compared to a low-calorie diet (-27%, P = 0.008, one study, n = 18) and the Mediterranean, compared to a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet (-4.4%, P = 0.030, one study, n = 12) result in greater reductions in hepatic fat content, but no such evidence was found for the Fatty Liver in Obesity dietary pattern (based on the principles of the Mediterranean diet), compared to the American Heart Association diet (-0.6%, P = 0.706, one study, n = 98). No between-group differences were reported for other outcomes across studies. A post hoc analysis, including two eligible studies assessing the effect of the Mediterranean, compared to a low-fat diet, irrespective of baseline presence of diabetes, showed strong evidence that the Mediterranean diet reduces hepatic fat content (-4.1%, 95% CI = -5.8 to -2.3, P < 0.001; I2 = 0%) and triglyceride concentrations (-16.9 mg/dL, 95% CI = -26.3 to -7.7, P < 0.001; I2 = 0%). Well-designed, adequately powered and rigorous randomised controlled trials are needed to provide robust evidence on the effect of these dietary patterns, but also other whole dietary approaches, on NAFLD progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Dietary diversity score (DDS) is recognized as an essential factor of a high-quality diet. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between DDS and cardiometabolic risk factors in hypertensive patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 972 hypertensive patients (322 males and 650 females) aged 35–70y participated were recruited. Dietary intake was evaluated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and DDS was calculated. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the IDF/AHA criteria. The anthropometric parameters, fasting blood sugar, lipid profile, and liver enzymes were measured. RESULTS: Male subjects who assigned to the top DDS tertile had 51% lower risk of having low serum HDL-C (OR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.24–0.96) in the crude model. A similar association was observed for men in the second tertile of DDS after adjusting for covariates (OR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.23–0.97). A significant inverse association was found between vegetable diversity score and odds of hyperglycemia in the male group in the adjusted model (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.22–0.91). The vegetable diversity score was inversely associated with 67% decreased metabolic syndrome risk in the adjusted model (OR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.15–0.70). CONCLUSION: These findings clarify the possible preventive role of higher DDS against metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is rapidly rising. We aimed to investigate associations of diet quality and dietary patterns with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Black and White adults. We included 1726 participants who attended the Year 20 Exam of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study and had their liver attenuation (LA) measured using computed tomography at Year 25 (2010–2011). NAFLD was defined as an LA of ≤51 Hounsfield units after the exclusion of other causes of liver fat. The a priori diet-quality score (APDQS) was used to assess diet quality, and dietary patterns were derived from principal components analysis. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between the APDQS, dietary patterns, and NAFLD, and were adjusted for Year 20 covariates. NAFLD prevalence at Year 25 was 23.6%. In a model adjusted for age, race, sex, education, alcohol use, physical activity, smoking, and center at Year 25, the APDQS was inversely associated (p = 0.004) and meat dietary pattern was positively associated (p < 0.0001) with NAFLD, while the fruit-vegetable dietary pattern was not significantly associated (p = 0.40). These associations remained significant when additionally adjusting for comorbidities (type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension), however, significant associations were diminished after additionally adjusting for body mass index (BMI). Overall, this study finds that the APDQS and meat dietary patterns are associated with prevalent NAFLD in mid-life. The associations appear to be partially mediated through higher BMI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Based on evidence, there is a significant relationship between diet quality and the chronic conditions such as dyslipidemia and liver disorders. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between alternative healthy eating index (AHEI) and some biochemical measurements (lipid profile and liver enzymes). METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 127 hospital employees were randomly selected (of 250 screened volunteers). AHEI was estimated based on a 168 items food frequency questionnaire. The laboratory data [triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST)] were extracted from periodic examinations. The physical activity was also estimated with international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ). RESULTS Among 127 completed data, the mean AHEI score was 47.1. There was a direct relationship between AHEI score and HDL (P = 0.02). Among the AHEI components, the score of nuts and soybeans was directly associated with HDL level (P = 0.007). There was no association between the other AHEI components and selected biomarkers. CONCLUSION Nuts and soybeans consumption-one unit per day-may increase HDL levels. More studies are needed to evaluate the diet quality with the other dietary indices. Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperinsulinaemia is considered as a major risk factor for the development of a myriad of chronic diseases. We examined the association between the dietary insulinaemic potential and the odds of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among Iranian adults. METHODS After being subjected to a liver ultrasound, 166 patients with NAFLD and 200 controls were included in the study. The dietary intakes and the physical activity levels of the participants were evaluated using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (short IPAQ), respectively. The insulinaemic potential of the diet was assessed by computing the scores of the Empirical Dietary Index for Hyperinsulinemia (EDIH) and the Empirical Dietary Index for Insulin Resistance (EDIR). RESULTS Compared with the control subjects, patients with NAFLD were significantly older; had higher values for body mass index, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol and alanine transaminase; and were more likely to smoke. Moreover, NAFLD patients had significant lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and were less likely to perform physical activity. The risk of NAFLD was higher in the individuals in the highest tertile of the EDIH (odds ratio [OR] = 2.79; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.32-5.90; p value for trend < 0.05) and EDIR (OR = 2.42; 95% CI = 1.22-4.79; p value for trend < 0.05) compared to those in the lowest tertile of these scores. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates that a higher dietary insulinaemic potential is associated with an increased risk of NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease. Previous studies have investigated the association between dietary patterns and NAFLD, but their results are contradictory. Therefore, we carried out this meta-analysis to examine the association between dietary patterns and NAFLD. METHODS We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases until November 14, 2019, to identify the observational studies on the association between dietary patterns and NAFLD. We selected three dietary patterns of Western, Prudent, and Mediterranean. A random-effect model was used to compute the summary risk estimates. Odds ratios (ORs) that were reported for fully adjusted models and their confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted for meta-analysis. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using Cochran's Q- and I2 tests. Eighteen articles (n = 24 867 participants) were entered our systematic review and meta-analysis. RESULTS We determined that Western dietary patterns (n = 8787 participants) containing high levels of processed food, red meat, high-fat dairy, and refined grains could significantly increase NAFLD (OR = 1.56, CI = 1.27 to 1.92; P ≤ 0.001). However, the Prudent (n = 13 023 participants) (OR = 0.78, CI = 0.71 to 0.85; P ≤ 0.001) and Mediterranean dietary patterns (n = 3057 participants) (OR = 0.77, CI = 0.60 to 0.98; P = 0.41), defined by high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil decreased the risk of this disease. CONCLUSIONS We found that Western dietary patterns increased the risk of NAFLD by 56%, although the Prudent and Mediterranean dietary patterns reduced the risk of this disease by 22% and 23%, respectively.

Abstract
Background: Examining dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) diet based on other dietary quality indices can be helpful to clarify positive aspects of this healthy dietary pattern. We aimed to examine the association between the DASH diet score and some diet quality indices among Iranian women. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 304 women aged 20 to 50 years old were recruited. Dietary diversity score (DDS), dietary energy density (DED), adherence to DASH diet, AlternativeHealthy Eating Index (AHEI) and mean adequacy ratio (MAR) were examined as suggested by previous articles. Dietary quality indices, anthropometric indices, and dietary intake were categorized based on DASH tertiles. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire with 168items was used for dietary assessment. Results: There were no significant differences in the demographic characteristics of participants across DASH tertiles (P>0.05). Participants who adhered more to the DASH diet had lower DEDthan those with lower adherence (0.99±0.35 vs 1.26±0.30; P=0.01). Significant differences were observed in the index of DDS across tertiles (P=0.01), however no differences in nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and MAR (0.93) index across the DASH categories were found.Additionally, DDS to DED in the top tertile of the DASH diet was greater than the bottom one(6.7±2.9 vs 4.4±1.9; P=0.001). Conclusion: The present study indicated that greater adherence to the DASH diet is inversely associated with DED and AHEI. As well as, there was a positive association between the DASHdiet and DDS/DED ratio. However, more studies are needed to confirm the results of this study

Abstract
AbstractNo study is available that has assessed the association of dietary diversity score (DDS) and alternative healthy eating index (AHEI) with glioma. The present study aimed to assess this association in Iranian adults. Overall, 128 pathologically confirmed cases of glioma were enrolled from hospitals and 256 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited from other wards of the hospital between 2009 and 2011. Dietary assessment was done using a validated block-format 123-item semi-quantitative FFQ. Dietary indices including DDS and AHEI-2010 were constructed according to standard methods. After controlling for potential confounders, a significant inverse association was found between DDS and risk of glioma (OR 0·42, 95 % CI 0·19, 0·94). Such finding was also seen when further adjustment was made for BMI; such that participants in the highest quartile of DDS were 56 % less likely to have glioma compared with those in the lowest quartile (OR 0·44, 95 % CI, 0·20, 0·97). In addition, a significant inverse association was found between adherence to AHEI and glioma; such that in the fully adjusted model, participants in the fourth quartile of AHEI had 74 % lower risk of glioma compared with those in the first quartile (OR 0·26, 95 % CI 0·12, 0·56). In conclusion, we found that greater adherence to the healthy, as measured by AHEI, and diverse, as measured by DDS, diets was associated with decreased odds of glioma.

Abstract
AIM Physical activity plays an important role in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).However, the optimal intensity and dose of physical activity for the treatment of NAFLD have yet to be found. In the present study, we aimed to provide a dose-response association between physical activity and NAFLD in a Chinese population. METHODS We recruited 543 patients with NAFLD diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography, and 543 age-matched and sex-matched controls. The amount of physical activity, sedentary time and energy intake was collected through a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between physical activity and NAFLD. RESULTS After adjusting for hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, energy intake and sedentary time, the total amount of physical activity was found to be inversely associated with NAFLD in a dose-dependent manner in men (>3180 metabolic equivalent of energy [MET]-min/week vs ≤1440 MET-min/week: OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.91, p for trend=0.01). In addition, both moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity physical activity were effective in reducing the risk of NAFLD, independent of confounding variables in men (moderate-intensity physical activity: >684 MET-min/week vs none: OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.86, p for trend=0.01; vigorous-intensity physical activity: >960 MET-min/week vs none: OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.95, p for trend=0.02). CONCLUSIONS Physical activity was inversely associated with risk of NAFLD in a dose-dependent manner in men. Vigorous-intensity and moderate-intensity physical activity were both beneficial to NAFLD, independent of sedentary time and energy intake.

Abstract
SCOPE Dietary pattern and impairments of intestinal barrier function are discussed to be critical in the development of metabolic impairments. Here, it is determined if an isocaloric exchange of complex carbohydrates with monosaccharides affects markers of intestinal permeability and metabolic health in healthy subjects. METHODS AND RESULTS After a dietary standardization for 4 days, all 12 subjects aged 21-33 years receive an isocaloric fructose- and glucose-enriched diet for 3 days separated by a wash-out phase. Anthropometry, blood pressure, markers of intestinal permeability and metabolic as well as inflammatory parameters are determined in blood samples or isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected at baseline, after standardizations and the monosaccharide interventions, respectively. While anthropometric and inflammatory parameters are not changed, the intake of an isocaloric fructose- but not glucose-enriched diet is associated with a significant increase of bacterial endotoxin plasma levels and alanine aminotransferase activity in serum, while total plasma nitrate/nitrite concentrations are significantly decreased. In peripheral blood mononuclear cells, Toll like receptors 4, 2, and MYD88 mRNA expressions are significantly induced after the fructose-rich but not the glucose-rich diet. CONCLUSION In metabolically healthy subjects, even a short-term intake of a fructose-rich diet can elevate bacterial endotoxin levels and change markers of liver health and vascular endothelial function.

Abstract
The role of nutrition and diet in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is still not fully understood. In the present study, we determined if dietary pattern and markers of intestinal permeability differ between overweight children with and without NAFLD. In addition, in a feasibility study, we assessed the effect of a moderate dietary intervention only focusing on nutrients identified to differ between groups on markers of intestinal barrier function and health status. Anthropometric data, dietary intake, metabolic parameters, and markers of inflammation, as well as of intestinal permeability, were assessed in overweight children (n = 89, aged 5⁻9) and normal-weight healthy controls (n = 36, aged 5⁻9). Sixteen children suffered from early signs of NAFLD, e.g., steatosis grade 1 as determined by ultrasound. Twelve children showing early signs of NAFLD were enrolled in the intervention study (n = 6 intervention, n = 6 control). Body mass index (BMI), BMI standard deviation score (BMI-SDS), and waist circumference were significantly higher in NAFLD children than in overweight children without NAFLD. Levels of bacterial endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), and proinflammatory markers like interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) were also significantly higher in overweight children with NAFLD compared to those without. Total energy and carbohydrate intake were higher in NAFLD children than in those without. The higher carbohydrate intake mainly resulted from a higher total fructose and glucose intake derived from a significantly higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. When counseling children with NAFLD regarding fructose intake (four times, 30⁻60 min within 1 year; one one-on-one counseling and three group counselings), neither alanine aminotransferase (ALT) nor aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity in serum changed; however, diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.05) and bacterial endotoxin levels (p = 0.06) decreased markedly in the intervention group after one year. Similar changes were not found in uncounseled children. Our results suggest that a sugar-rich diet might contribute to the development of early stages of NAFLD in overweight children, and that moderate dietary counseling might improve the metabolic status of overweight children with NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increase in alcohol consumption and related harmful effects has been reported among the elderly population in Asia. Of note, it is important to monitor patterns of alcohol use, and to establish a valid and reliable evaluation system when screening for risky consumption in this age group. OBJECTIVE The aim of the current study was to evaluate the possible alcoholic liver disease (ALD) risk factors of a local population in elderly Chinese adults. METHODS A questionnaire was sent to 3393 Chinese adults over 40 years old in Hefei. Alcohol consumption was determined based on the AUDIT questionnaire. ALD was defined by ALD diagnostic standards. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) derived from multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between ALD and sociodemographic variables. RESULTS Among 2545 total interviewees, 448 (17.6%) reported a history of alcohol consumption in the previous 12 months. Of these drinkers, 46.7% were male and 53.3% were female. The overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient for AUDIT was 0.648. The rate of ALD was 6.83%. Alcohol abuse was significantly associated with ALD. In the logistical model, alcohol abuse was independently associated with ALD (OR = 6.17, 95% CI: 3.69-15.24; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Alcohol use, sex, age, and facial flushing were risk factors for ALD. These results provide important evidence for the prevention and therapy of ALD.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome is associated with cardio-metabolic risk factors and lipid abnormalities. Previous studies evaluated the dietary habits and nutrient intakes among patients with metabolic syndrome; however the association between metabolic risk factors and adiponectin with dietary diversity score (DDS) in patients with metabolic syndrome has not been evaluated yet. Therefore the aim of the current study was to evaluate these relationships among patients with metabolic syndrome. Methods One hundred sixty patients with metabolic syndrome were recruited in the study. The anthropometric parameters including weight, height, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured. Serum adiponectin concentration was measured by enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay method (ELISA). Lipid profile and fasting serum glucose concentrations (FSG) were also measured with enzymatic colorimetric methods. Blood pressure was also measured and DDS was calculated using the data obtained from food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Results Subjects in lower DDS categorizes had significantly lower energy and fiber intake; whereas mean protein intake of subjects in the highest quartile was significantly higher than second quartile. Higher prevalence of obesity was also observed in the top quartiles (P < 0.001). Subjects in the lower quartiles had higher serum triglyceride concentrations and systolic blood pressure (SBP) values and lower serum adiponectin concentrations compared with subjects in higher DDS categorizes (P < 0.05). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome components among patients in lower DDS quartiles was significantly higher (P < 0.05). Conclusion Our study found a lower serum triglyceride and SBP and higher serum adiponectin concentrations in top quartiles of DDS. The findings clarify the possible preventive role of higher dietary diversity score against metabolic syndrome. However, for further confirming the findings, more studies are warranted.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an example of pathological fat accumulation in the liver and one of the major health conditions in the world. This study aimed to examine the independent role of dietary patterns in the development of NAFLD. In a cross-sectional study, 1500 individuals referred to a nutrition clinic were randomly selected, their demographic, anthropometric and blood metabolic indices were obtained, and food frequency questionnaires were completed for them. Liver stiffness was calculated using the NAFLD score formula and fibroscan. The two dominant dietary patterns identified were the “healthy” and “unhealthy dietary patterns”. A significant percentage of those with NAFLD (45%) were in the upper quartile of the unhealthy model; however, only 10% had the healthy pattern (p < 0.001). In this study, 32.9 and 13.9% of the healthy and unhealthy participants were in the upper quartile of the healthy diet pattern. Also, it was shown that waist circumference is a strong mediator of dietary patterns and NAFLD relationship, and the indirect effect of diet through abdominal circumference is 28 times greater than the direct effect on NAFLD. The results suggested that healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns are respectively associated with lower- and higher-risk of NAFLD but the role of waist circumference as a mediator deserves more consideration.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the most common liver disease in the world. Dietary habits have a significant impact on the biological and physical profile of patients and increase the risk of NAFLD. The overall pattern of diet intake is more associated with health outcomes than nutrients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional profile and the dietary patterns of Lebanese NAFLD patients and compare it with controls. During this study; 112 NAFLD Lebanese adult patients (55 men and 57 women); and 110 controls (44 men and 66 women) were recruited. Dietary intake was evaluated by two 24-h recalls and a semi-quantitative 90-item food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were determined by factor analysis. Results from the study demonstrated that 40% of cases belonged to the high fruit group as compared to 30% following a high meat; fast food dietary pattern. Both groups increased the odds of NAFLD by four-fold (p < 0.05). The traditional diet decreases the odds by 33% after adjustment with the covariables. The high fruit diet group was, as with the high meat, fast food dietary pattern, the main potential risk factor for NAFLD in Lebanese patients.

Abstract
Little has been studied regarding the diets of children following LTX. The study aim was to assess and compare dietary intake and DQ of healthy children and children post-LTX. Children and adolescents (2-18 years) post-LTX (n=27) and healthy children (n=28) were studied. Anthropometric and demographic data and two 24-hour recalls (one weekend; one weekday) were collected. Intake of added sugar, HFCS, fructose, GI, and GL was calculated. DQ was measured using three validated DQ indices: the HEI-C, the DGI-CA, and the DQI-I. Although no differences in weight-for-age z-scores were observed between groups, children post-LTX had lower height-for-age z-scores than healthy children (P<.01). With the exception of vitamin B12, no significant differences in energy and macronutrient (protein, carbohydrate, and fat), added sugar, HFCS, fructose, GI, GL, and micronutrient intakes and DQ indices (HEI-C, DGI-CA, and DQI-I) between groups were observed (P>.05). The majority of children in both groups (>40%) had low DQ scores. No significant interrelationships between dietary intake, anthropometric, and demographic were found (P>.05). Both healthy and children post-LTX consume diets with poor DQ. This has implications for risk of obesity and metabolic dysregulation, particularly in transplant populations on immunosuppressive therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diet plays a key role in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study was to review systematically observational studies available regarding the relationship between food intakes and NAFLD. METHODS We searched Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases to identify English observational studies on food groups, dietary patterns, and NAFLD. Cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies were selected and then duplication, topic, type of study, study population, variables examined and quality of data reporting of the articles were evaluated. RESULTS We identified 2128 studies in the initial search, of which 33 were reviewed in full text and 7 articles were included in this systematic review. Intakes of red meat, fats, and sweets were high whereas consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables were less in NAFLD patients. Moreover, there was a positive association between the Western dietary pattern and the risk of NAFLD, while adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with the severity of hepatic steatosis. CONCLUSION Generally, different food group intakes and dietary patterns are associated with the progression of NAFLD and its risk factors. Because of the many limitations of available studies reviewed on this topic, more prospective studies are suggested.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its related risk factors among the general population of Isfahan city located in the central part of Iran. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the prevalence of NAFLD among 483 general adult populations was determined using ultrasonography. Anthropometric and biochemical variables were compared in groups with and without NAFLD and their predictive value for occurrence of NAFLD was investigated also. Results: Prevalence of NAFLD was 39.3%. Frequency of focal fatty infiltration (FFI), Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III of NAFLD was 9.5%, 21.1%, 7.2%, 1.4%, respectively. Prevalence of different types of NAFLD and FFI, was not different between female and male participants (P = 0.238). Ordinal regression was determined that all of the studied variables have significant predictive value for NAFLD (P < 0.001, γ = 0.615). Spearman correlation indicated that there was a significant relationship between NAFLD and BMI (r = 0.37, P < 0.001), age (r = 0.15, P = 0.001), FBS (r = 0.20, P < 0.001), cholesterol (r = 0.19, P < 0.001), triglyceride (r = 0.20, P < 0.001), LDL (r = 0.16, P < 0.001), AST (r = 0.17, P < 0.001), and ALT (r = 0.31, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Considering the high prevalence of NAFLD specially its lower grades among Isfahani adult general population and their association with studied variables, it seems that interventional studies which target-related mentioned risk factors could reduce the overall occurrence of NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetic and environmental factors are both involved in the etiology of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Among the genetic factors, certain polymorphisms of adiponectin gene are associated with NAFLD. In the current study, we investigated the association between metabolic parameters with different genotypes of adiponectin +276 G>T polymorphism among the Iranian NAFLD patients, and the effect of nutritional intake with development of NAFLD. METHODS In this study, 75 patients with NAFLD and 76 healthy individuals were enrolled. Dietary intakes were assessed using a semi-quantitative Food-Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR) were calculated. Biochemical assays including FSG (Fasting Serum Glucose), liver enzymes, lipid profiles, Malondialdehyde, insulin resistance and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) were measured after 12 hr fasting. Gene polymorphism study was done by using of sequencing method. RESULTS Although, T allele frequency was more prevalent in patients with NAFLD than control, adiponectin +276 G>T polymorphism was not associated with risk of NAFLD. Among the metabolic parameters, TAC in TT genotype was significantly lower 1.44(0.69 to 2.81) p>0.05, AST in GT, GG genotypes, and ALT in all three genotypes were higher in NAFLD patients in compared to healthy subjects (p<0.05). Patients with GT genotype have significantly lower fat consumption and vitamin E intake as compared to control group with the same genotype (p<0.05). CONCLUSION In this study, we showed the association of different genotypes of +276 G>T polymorphism in adiponectin gene with some metabolic parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the world. Although some studies have been conducted about dietary intakes of these patients, but the results are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to survey all macronutrients and micronutrients included in dietary intake of these patients for better understanding the factors influencing this disease. METHODS The present study is a case-control conducted in Isfahan city, Iran. The cases were recently diagnosed patients with NAFLD who identified by ultrasonography. The case (159) and control (158) individuals were matched in age and gender. Data of general characteristics and physical activity of individuals were collected through questionnaire. Dietary intake was also collected using 24 h dietary recall questionnaire. RESULTS Waistline and body mass index for the case group were more than the control group (P < 0.05). Physical activity level in healthy individuals was more than patients with NAFLD. Dietary intake of saturated fatty acids and sugar in patients with NAFLD was more than healthy individuals (P < 0.05). Intake of total dietary fiber, folic acid, Vitamin D, zinc, and potassium in healthy individuals was more than patients with NAFLD (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In total, it seems the type of dietary intake source is associated with NAFLD. Increasing saturated fatty acids and sugar and decreasing fiber, folic acid, Vitamin D, zinc, and potassium intake might play a role in the progression of this disease.

Abstract
Background It has been suggested that dietary modifications in combination with genetic predisposition play an important role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. In the current study we aimed to investigate the major components of metabolic syndrome in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nutritional intakes according to different genotype of uncoupling protein-2 (UCP2) −866G/A gene polymorphism in these patients. Methods In this study 151 participants including 75 patients with NAFLD and 76 healthy individuals were enrolled. Dietary intakes were assessed using a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Physical activity was obtained by metabolic equivalent questionnaire. Anthropometric assessments were conducted by a trained researcher and body mass index and waist to hip ratio were calculated. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis and biochemical assays including fasting serum glucose, liver enzymes and lipid profiles were measured. Polymorphisms of −866G/A UCP2 gene was determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results Serum triglyceride concentrations in 53.3 % of NAFLD patients compared with 35.5 % of control group was more than 150 mg/dl (P = 0.034). A significantly higher prevalence of low serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations was also observed in female NAFLD patients (P < 0.001). Dietary intakes in NAFLD group were not significantly different compared with control group (P > 0.05). However, according to genotypes patients with AG genotype had significantly higher protein consumption compared with control group (P < 0.05). Significantly higher consumption of dietary iron and copper in NAFLD patients with AG genotype was only observed among patients with NAFLD. However, the comparison of macro and micronutrient intakes in control group sound for stronger differences for AA genotype although these differences did not achieve significant threshold. Conclusions A high prevalence of metabolic abnormalities was reported among NAFLD patients. Additionally, among NAFLD group, patients with AG genotype significantly consumed more protein, iron and copper in their usual diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Serum vitamin D concentration is reduced in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Although the mechanism of vitamin D deficiency in liver disease is not fully understood, a few reports have suggested the beneficial effects of vitamin D supplements. The present study investigated changes in serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D level and clinical parameters after total calorie restriction with vitamin D intake reduction in NAFLD patients. METHODS Newly diagnosed NAFLD patients with elevated aminotransferase levels were chosen for a calorie restriction and weight-reduction program. A total of 82 patients received nutritional education from nutritionists every 2 weeks for 2 months. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D level, amount of vitamin D intake, and physical activity were thoroughly investigated. RESULTS The mean serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentration was 13.0 ng/ml. Twenty-nine patients (35.4%) had severe vitamin D deficiency. Patients with a 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentration <10 ng/ml had an increased risk of abdominal obesity (72.4% vs. 47.2%, P = 0.023) and a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (69% vs. 42.2%, P = 0.015) compared with patients with 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels >10 ng/ml. Although total energy and vitamin D intake were reduced during the program, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels increased in patients with NAFLD (P < 0.001). Liver enzymes and metabolic parameters also improved, even as vitamin D intake decreased. Serum vitamin D concentration increased with body weight and intrahepatic fat reduction, independent of decreases in vitamin D intake. CONCLUSIONS Weight loss per increased serum vitamin D level without vitamin D supplementation and improved metabolic parameters in NAFLD.

Abstract
Dietary pattern analysis is an alternative approach to examine the association between diet and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study examined the association of two diet-quality scores, namely Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) and Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) with NAFLD prevalence. Apparently healthy Chinese adults (332 male, 465 female) aged 18 years or above were recruited through a population screening between 2008 and 2010 in a cross-sectional population-based study in Hong Kong. DQI-I and MDS, as well as major food group and nutrient intakes were calculated based on dietary data from a food frequency questionnaire. NAFLD was defined as intrahepatic triglyceride content at ≥5% by proton-magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the association between each diet-quality score or dietary component and prevalent NAFLD with adjustment for potential lifestyle, metabolic and genetic factors. A total of 220 subjects (27.6%) were diagnosed with NAFLD. DQI-I but not MDS was associated with the prevalence of NAFLD. A 10-unit decrease in DQI-I was associated with 24% increase in the likelihood of having NAFLD in the age and sex adjusted model (95% CI: 1.06-1.45, p = 0.009), and the association remained significant when the model was further adjusted for other lifestyle factors, metabolic and genetic factors [OR: 1.26 (95% CI: 1.03-1.54), p = 0.027]. Multivariate regression analyses showed an inverse association of the intake of vegetables and legumes, fruits and dried fruits, as well as vitamin C with the NAFLD prevalence (p<0.05). In conclusion, a better diet quality as characterized by a higher DQI-I and a higher consumption of vegetables, legumes and fruits was associated with a reduced likelihood of having NAFLD in Hong Kong Chinese.

Abstract
Several studies have reported the relationship between alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Few studies, however, have investigated the causes of CIMT thickening in patients with ALD. The authors explored the causes of CIMT thickening in patients with ALD. The authors enrolled 152 patients who were stratified into groups: nonthickening CIMT with ALD (group A); thickening CIMT with ALD (group B); nonthickening CIMT without ALD (group C); and thickening CIMT without ALD (group D). The CIMT was significantly different between patients with and without ALD (χ 2= 3.875, P = 0.049). The patients in groups A, B, and C were significantly younger than group D (P = 0.001, 0.036, and 0.001, respectively). The body mass indexes (BMI) in groups A and B were significantly higher than in group C (P = 0.000 and 0.007, respectively). The blood glucose levels in groups B and D were significantly higher than in group C (P = 0.016 and 0.018, respectively). The blood uric acid levels in group B were significantly higher than in groups A, C, and D (P = 0.009, 0.000, and 0.003, respectively). The blood uric acid in group A was significantly higher than in group C (P = 0.002). The serum total cholesterol (TC) levels of patients in group B were significantly higher than in groups A and C (P = 0.027 and 0.000, respectively) and the serum TC level in group A was significantly higher than in group C (P = 0.048). The serum triglyceride (TG) levels in groups A and B were significantly higher than in group C (P = 0.027 and 0.000, respectively). The serum of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels in group B were significantly higher than in group C (P = 0.000). Although a comparison of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) serum levels among the 4 groups indicated no changes. The serum LDL levels in group B were significantly higher than in group A (P = 0.008). No significant differences were observed among the groups with respect to serum homocysteine, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), soluble OX40 ligand (sOX40L), or heat shock protein (HSP) 60 or 70. Alcoholic liver disease may result in CIMT thickening. Carotid intima-media thickness is associated with age and metabolic factors in patients with ALD. In addition, ALD might promote the premature occurrence of CIMT thickening. The thickening of carotid artery intima thickness, however, is not associated with cytokine profiles, oxidative balance, or immune responses in patients with ALD.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a progressive disease that encompasses a spectrum of liver diseases, ranging from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Data related to survival in children are scarce, but these data firmly associate NAFLD with higher risks of hepatic and non-hepatic morbidities and mortalities compared with the general population. More recently, the association between NAFLD and cardiovascular disease among children has increasingly been recognized. Given that obesity is a major risk factor for the disease, paediatric NAFLD is becoming a global issue, paralleling the dramatic rise in obesity worldwide. NASH, which is more common in obese children, has the potential to advance to liver fibrosis and failure. It is unclear why certain patients undergo such transformation but this susceptibility is likely related to an interaction between a genetically susceptible host and the surrounding environment. Currently, treatment is largely conservative and includes lifestyle modification, attainable through healthy weight reduction via diet and exercise. In this review, current knowledge about NAFLD in children is summarized. This review aims to increase the awareness of the medical community about a hidden public health issue and to identify current gaps in the literature while providing directions for future research.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The association of dietary intake and fatty liver disease (FLD) is of importance for disease prevention. Dietary pattern analysis enables the investigation of overall diet and permits to take interactions and cumulative effects of dietary components into account. This review summarizes recent findings on the association of dietary patterns and FLD. RECENT FINDINGS A systematic review of articles published from March 2013 to August 2014 identified four relevant observational (n = 116-995) and one interventional study (n = 12). The Healthy Eating Index and Dietary Diversity Scores were not related to nonalcoholic FLD. A Mediterranean diet intervention resulted in a significant decrease in liver fat content over 6 weeks. Exploratory approaches revealed a 'Western pattern' and a pattern having alcohol, meat (poultry) and tea in common with a hypothesis-driven pattern, which were both associated with FLD. SUMMARY Most studies were limited by a cross-sectional design and small-to-moderate sample sizes. Observational studies applying exploratory approaches and a Mediterranean diet intervention demonstrated most promising results relating dietary patterns to FLD. Prospective studies with measurement of liver fat on a continuous scale at multiple time points in large samples are important requisites to improve our understanding of FLD cause.

It is well established that oxidative stress is implicated in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease pathogenesis, whereas the dietary intake of antioxidants has been reported to be low in patients with the disease. We hypothesized that blood redox status measurements would be associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease presence and severity, and that diet's total antioxidant capacity could moderate the aforementioned association. The study sample consisted of 73 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, of which 58 were matched by age, sex, and body mass index with 58 controls. Diet's total antioxidant capacity was estimated through the ferric-reducing antioxidant power, the total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter, and the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity scores, whereas blood redox status was assessed by measuring thiobarbituric acid reactive substances levels, the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase, and serum resistance to oxidation. Diet's total antioxidant capacity scores and glutathione peroxidase activity were not significantly associated with the disease presence or severity. Both thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and serum resistance to oxidation were significantly associated with the likelihood of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (odds ratios [ORs], 7.769 [P= .007] and 0.936 [P= .033], respectively), independently of abdominal fat level, degree of insulin resistance, blood lipid levels, markers of subclinical inflammation, and diet's total antioxidant capacity, but not with the disease histologic severity or stage. Our results support the association between blood redox status and the likelihood of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease regardless of diet's total antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The role of diet in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its typical precursor, chronic liver disease (CLD), is poorly understood. Following dietary recommendations has been shown to reduce risk of many cancers, but whether such diets are associated with HCC and CLD is unknown. We prospectively evaluated the association of two dietary indices, the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010) and the alternate Mediterranean Diet Score (aMED), with HCC incidence and CLD mortality in a large U.S. prospective cohort. We calculated the HEI-2010 and aMED scores for 494,942 participants in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health study, based on typical diet assessed using a food frequency questionnaire FFQ between 1995 and 1996. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for quintiles of each index were estimated using Cox's proportional hazards regression, after adjusting for alcohol intake, smoking, body mass index, diabetes, and other covariates. A total of 509 HCC cases (1995-2006) and 1,053 CLD deaths (1995-2011) were documented during follow-up. Higher HEI-2010 scores, reflecting favorable adherence to dietary guidelines, were associated with lower risk of HCC (HR, 0.72, 95% CI: 0.53-0.97 for the highest quintile, compared to lowest; P trend = 0.03) and lower mortality resulting from CLD (HR, 0.57; 95% CI: 0.46-0.71; P trend < 0.0001). High aMED scores were also associated with lower risk of HCC (HR, 0.62; 95% CI: 0.47-0.84; P trend = 0.0002) and lower risk of CLD mortality (HR, 0.52; 95% CI: 0.42-0.65; P trend < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Adhering to dietary recommendations may reduce the risk of developing HCC and dying of CLD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide and it has overlapping pathogenesis with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Reviewed here are recent advances in understanding the contribution of diet and selected nutrients to NAFLD. RECENT FINDINGS To understand the effect of diet, the microbiome must be considered because it is the interface of diet and the liver. Early studies suggest that the characteristic of the microbiota is altered in NAFLD. Fructose is a lipogenic carbohydrate that contributes to insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia and appears to be associated with the severity of NAFLD. Fructose absorption and malabsorption may alter the microbiota and could be mediating effects on the liver. Lipids also have potent microbiome interactions and could contribute to the benefit of diets emphasizing lipid changes. Several new studies demonstrate that the Mediterranean diet and 'lifestyle change' are effective in modestly improving NAFLD. A new study of 'lifestyle' in children showed simultaneous improvement in cardiovascular disease risk measurements and hepatic steatosis. SUMMARY Current data supports limiting sugar in the diet and 'lifestyle change' as a first-line treatment for NAFLD; however, the benefits from these appear to be modest. The effects of diet on the liver are mediated through the microbiome and expansion of research in this area is needed.
