Abstract
Our objective was to estimate the requirements of metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy for the maintenance (NEm) of lactating and dry cows, the efficiency of ME utilization for milk production (kl) and tissue gain (kg), and the use of body energy mobilization for milk production (kt) throughout the lactation of primiparous crossbred Holstein × Gyr cows, using open-circuit respiration chambers. Twenty-nine primiparous Holstein × Gyr crossbred cows with an initial BW averaging 563 ± 40.1 kg and 2.5 ± 0.09 years old were used throughout lactation and dry periods. The cows were kept non-pregnant throughout the study to eliminate possible confounding factors. Apparent digestibility assays, followed by calorimeter measurements, were performed 6 times throughout the lactation period. In the dry-off period, the cows were also evaluated but fed with restricted intake (DMI = 1.1% BW/d) to achieve heat production close to maintenance. After 21 d of diet adaptation, an apparent digestibility assay followed by calorimeter measurements was performed. Parameter estimates for lactation period were obtained by mixed models including lactation stage as repeated measures. For restricted feeding at dry-off and fasting period assays, the requirements were estimated by exponential regression. For whole lactation, the values of MEm and NEm were 0.588 and 0.395 MJ/BW0.75, respectively. The efficiencies klkgkt were 0.672, 0.771, and 0.814, respectively. However, MEm and NEm were higher in early and mid-lactation than late, while kl was higher in early than other lactation stages. Dry and non-pregnant cows had MEm of 0.434 MJ/BW0.75 and NEm of 0.351 MJ/BW0.75 for maintenance level, and MEm of 0.396 MJ/BW0.75 and NEm of 0.345 MJ/BW0.75 for fasting metabolism level and efficiency of ME utilization for maintenance was 0.80. Our findings confirmed that F1 crossbred Holstein × Gyr dairy cows have differences in energy requirement and efficiency throughout the lactation stages, suggesting the use of different values in each stage. The estimated values of energy requirement for maintenance and efficiencies for primiparous lactating crossbred Holstein × Gyr were similar to those reported in the literature in specific studies and requirements systems.

Abstract
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, which is almost exclusively sexually transmitted, causes genital herpes. Although this lifelong and incurable infection is extremely widespread, currently there is no readily available diagnostic device that accurately detects HSV-2 antigens to a satisfactory degree. Here, we report an ultrasensitive electrochemical device that detects HSV-2 antigens within 9 min and costs just $1 (USD) to manufacture. The electrochemical biosensor is biofunctionalized with the human cellular receptor nectin-1 and detects the glycoprotein gD2, which is present within the HSV-2 viral envelope. The performance of the device is tested in a guinea pig model that mimics human biofluids, yielding 88.9% sensitivity, 100.0% specificity, and 95.0% accuracy under these conditions, with a limit of detection of 0.019 fg mL-1 for gD2 protein and 0.057 PFU mL-1 for titered viral samples. Importantly, no cross-reactions with other viruses were detected, indicating the adequate robustness and selectivity of the sensor. Our low-cost technology could facilitate more frequent testing for HSV-2.

Abstract
COVID-19 has led to over 6.8 million deaths worldwide and continues to affect millions of people, primarily in low-income countries and communities with low vaccination coverage. Low-cost and rapid response technologies that enable accurate, frequent testing of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants are crucial for outbreak prevention and infectious disease control. Here we produce and characterize cellulose fibers naturally generated by the bacterium Gluconacetobacter hansenii as an alternative biodegradable substrate for manufacturing an eco-friendly diagnostic test for COVID-19. Using this green technology, we describe a novel and label-free potentiometric diagnostic test that can detect SARS-CoV-2 within 10 min and costs US$3.50 per unit. The test has bacterial cellulose (BC) as its substrate and a carbon-based electrode modified with graphene oxide and the human angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) as its receptor. Our device accurately and precisely detects emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and demonstrates exceptional sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for tested clinical nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal (NP/OP) samples.

Abstract
COVID-19 has killed over 6 million people worldwide. Currently available methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 are limited by their cost and need for multistep sample preparation and trained personnel. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop fast, inexpensive, and scalable point-of-care diagnostics that can be used for mass testing. Between January and March 2021, we obtained 321 anterior nare swab samples from individuals in Philadelphia (PA, USA). For the Real-time Accurate Portable Impedimetric Detection prototype 1.0 (RAPID) test, anterior nare samples were tested via an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) approach. The overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of RAPID in this cohort study were 80.6%, 89.0%, and 88.2%, respectively. We present a rapid, accurate, inexpensive (<$5.00 per unit), and scalable test for diagnosing COVID-19 at the point-of-care. We anticipate that further iterations of this approach will enable widespread deployment, large-scale testing, and population-level surveillance. Abstract
COVID-19 has led to over 3.47 million deaths worldwide and continues to devastate primarily middle- and low-income countries. High-frequency testing has been proposed as a potential solution to prevent outbreaks. However, current tests are not sufficiently low-cost, rapid, or scalable to enable broad COVID-19 testing. Here, we describe LEAD (Low-cost Electrochemical Advanced Diagnostic), a diagnostic test that detects severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) within 6.5 min and costs $1.50 per unit to produce using easily accessible and commercially available materials. LEAD is highly sensitive toward SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (limit of detection = 229 fg⋅mL-1) and displays an excellent performance profile using clinical saliva (100.0% sensitivity, 100.0% specificity, and 100.0% accuracy) and nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal (88.7% sensitivity, 86.0% specificity, and 87.4% accuracy) samples. No cross-reactivity was detected with other coronavirus or influenza strains. Importantly, LEAD also successfully diagnosed the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 UK variant. The device presents high reproducibility under all conditions tested and preserves its original sensitivity for 5 d when stored at 4 °C in phosphate-buffered saline. Our low-cost and do-it-yourself technology opens new avenues to facilitate high-frequency testing and access to much-needed diagnostic tests in resource-limited settings and low-income communities.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has killed over 3 million people worldwide. Despite the urgency of the current pandemic, most available diagnostic methods for COVID-19 use RT-PCR to detect nucleic acid sequences specific to SARS-CoV-2. These tests are limited by their requirement of a large laboratory space, high reagent costs, multistep sample preparation, and the potential for cross-contamination. Moreover, results usually take hours to days to become available. Therefore, fast, reliable, inexpensive, and scalable point-of-care diagnostics are urgently needed. Here, we describe RAPID 1.0, a simple, handheld, and highly sensitive miniaturized biosensor modified with human receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme-2. RAPID 1.0 can detect SARS-CoV-2 using 10 μL of sample within 4 min through its increased resistance to charge transfer of a redox probe measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensitivity and specificity of RAPID for nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab and saliva samples are 85.3% and 100% and 100% and 86.5%, respectively.

Abstract
A new method to manufacture electrochemical devices based on the graphite and colorless nail polish (N-grap) film was developed for tartrazine (Tz) detection. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) demonstrates that the composite material presents a high porous carbon structure. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to electrochemically characterize the electrode material, which corroborates the porous structure of the N-graph due to the enhanced electroactive area (5.4-fold increase) and presented a heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k0) of 5.82 × 10-3 cm s-1 for potassium ferricyanide. The electrochemical determination of the Tz was carried out using square-wave voltammetry (SWV), under the optimized experimental conditions, which showed high sensitivity (0.793 A L mol-1) and a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 2.10 × 10-8 mol L-1 with a linear concentration ranging from 2.0 to 50.0 μmol L-1. The developed sensor was applied for the analysis of Tz in sports drink samples and the result obtained by N-grap device was statistically compared with a spectrophotometric method demonstrating good accordance and the accuracy of the proposed method. Based on these results, we believe that this new fabrication method to produce disposable and low-cost electrochemical devices can be an alternative method for in-field analysis of dye in commercial sport drink samples and other relevant applications.

Abstract
The effects of divergent phenotypic classification in crossbreed Holstein × Gyr dairy heifers for methane emissions in relation to performance, digestibility, energy and nitrogen partition, blood metabolites and temperature of body surface were evaluated. Thirty-five heifers were classified as high and low emission for CH4 production (g/day), yield (g/kg dry matter intake) and intensity (g/kg average daily gain). Digestibility was evaluated by total collection of feces and urine. Gas exchanges were obtained in open-circuit respiratory chambers. A completely randomized design was used and divergent groups were compared by Fisher's test. No differences were found in intake traits between groups of CH4 production and intensity. The low yield group had higher intake. For digestibility and temperature at different body sites were no differences between variables. High production group had higher energy losses as methane and heat production. Low intensity group had higher digestible energy, energy balance and ratio between metabolizable and digestible energy. Urinary nitrogen was 14.3% lower for low production group. There was a difference between methane yield divergent groups for nitrogen intake, digestible and retained. Energy and nitrogen partitioning traits are correlated to the animals divergent for methane production and yield. The low production group presented lower blood insulin concentration. It was not possible to identify divergent animals for CH4 emission using the infrared thermography technique.

Abstract
In this work we consider the nonequilibrium mechanical and magnetic work performed on a one-dimensional compressible Ising model. In the harmonic approximation we easily integrate the mechanical degrees of freedom of the model, and the resulting effective Hamiltonian depends on two external parameters, the magnetic field and the force applied along the chain. As the model is exactly soluble in one dimension we can determine the free energy difference between two arbitrary thermodynamic states of the system. We show the validity of the Jarzynski equality, which relates the free energy difference between two thermodynamic states of the system and the average work performed by external agents in a finite time, through nonequilibrium paths between the same thermodynamic states. We have found that the Jarzynski theorem remains valid for all the values of the rate of variation of the magnetic field and the mechanical force applied to the system.

Abstract
This review aims to give an overview of the current state of monitoring depth of anaesthesia and detecting the moment of loss of consciousness, from the first clinical signs involved in anaesthesia to the latest technologies used in this area. Such techniques are extremely important for the development of automatic systems for anaesthesia control, including preventing intraoperative awareness episodes and overdoses. A search in the databases Pubmed and IEEE Xplore was performed using terms such anaesthetic monitoring, depth of anaesthesia, loss of consciousness, as well as anaesthesia indexes, namely BIS. Despite the several methods capable of monitoring the hypnotic state of anaesthesia, there is still no methodology to accurate detect the moment of loss of consciousness during induction of general anaesthesia.

Abstract
In this paper we determine the nonequilibrium magnetic work performed on a Ising model and relate it to the fluctuation theorem derived some years ago by Jarzynski. The basic idea behind this theorem is the relationship connecting the free energy difference between two thermodynamic states of a system and the average work performed by an external agent, in a finite time, through nonequilibrium paths between the same thermodynamic states. We test the validity of this theorem by considering the one-dimensional Ising model where the free energy is exactly determined as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We have found that the Jarzynski theorem remains valid for all the values of the rate of variation of the magnetic field applied to the system. We have also determined the probability distribution function for the work performed on the system for the forward and reverse processes and verified that predictions based on the Crooks relation are equally correct. We also propose a method to calculate the lag between the current state of the system and that of the equilibrium based on macroscopic variables. We have shown that the lag increases with the sweeping rate of the field at its final value for the reverse process, while it decreases in the case of the forward process. The lag increases linearly with the size of the chain and with a slope decreasing with the inverse of the rate of variation of the field.

Abstract
A new method to tag the barium daughter in the double-beta decay of ^{136}Xe is reported. Using the technique of single molecule fluorescent imaging (SMFI), individual barium dication (Ba^{++}) resolution at a transparent scanning surface is demonstrated. A single-step photobleach confirms the single ion interpretation. Individual ions are localized with superresolution (∼2 nm), and detected with a statistical significance of 12.9σ over backgrounds. This lays the foundation for a new and potentially background-free neutrinoless double-beta decay technology, based on SMFI coupled to high pressure xenon gas time projection chambers.

Abstract
Plant extracts have been proposed as substitutes for chemical feed additives due to their potential as rumen fermentation modifiers and because of their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, possibly reducing methane emissions. This study aimed to evaluate the use of oregano (OR), green tea extracts (GT), and their association as feed additives on the performance and methane emissions from dairy between 28 and 87 d of lactation. Thirty-two lactating dairy cows, blocked into 2 genetic groups: 16 Holstein cows and 16 crossbred Holstein-Gir, with 522.6 ± 58.3 kg of body weight, 57.2 ± 20.9 d in lactation, producing 27.5 ± 5.0 kg/cow of milk and with 3.1 ± 1.8 lactations were evaluated (means ± standard error of the means). Cows were allocated into 4 treatments: control (CON), without plant extracts in the diet; oregano extract (OR), with the addition of 0.056% of oregano extract in the dry matter (DM) of the diet; green tea (GT), with the addition of 0.028% of green tea extract in the DM of the diet; and mixture, with the addition of 0.056% oregano extract and 0.028% green tea extract in the DM of the diet. The forage-to-concentrate ratio was 60:40. Forage was composed of corn silage (94%) and Tifton hay (6%); concentrate was based on ground corn and soybean meal. Plant extracts were supplied as powder, which was previously added and homogenized into 1 kg of concentrate in natural matter, top-dressed onto the total mixed diet. No treatment by day interaction was observed for any of the evaluated variables, but some block by treatment interactions were significant. In Holstein cows, the mixture treatment decreased gross energy and tended to decrease the total-tract apparent digestibility coefficient for crude protein and total digestible nutrients when compared with OR. During the gas measurement period, GT and OR increased the digestible fraction of the ingested DM and decreased CH4 expressed in grams per kilogram of digestible DMI compared with CON. The use of extracts did not change rumen pH, total volatile fatty acid concentration, milk yield, or most milk traits. Compared with CON, oregano addition decreased fat concentration in milk. The use of plant extracts altered some milk fatty acids but did not change milk fatty acids grouped according to chain length (short or long), saturation (unsaturated or saturated), total conjugated linoleic acids, and n-3 and n-6 contents. Green tea and oregano fed separately reduced gas emission in cows during the first third of lactation and have potential to be used as feed additives for dairy cows.

Abstract
The stationary states of the prisoner's dilemma model are studied on a square lattice taking into account the role of a noise parameter in the decision-making process. Only first neighboring players-defectors and cooperators-are considered in each step of the game. Through Monte Carlo simulations we determined the phase diagrams of the model in the plane noise versus the temptation to defect for a large range of values of the noise parameter. We observed three phases: cooperators and defectors absorbing phases, and a coexistence phase between them. The phase transitions as well as the critical exponents associated with them were determined using both static and dynamical scaling laws.

Abstract
The effect of diffusion in the one-dimensional long-range contact process is investigated by mean-field calculations. Recent works have shown that diffusion decreases the effectiveness of long-range interactions, affecting the character of the phase transition: for higher values of the diffusion coefficient, stronger long-range interactions are required to enable phase coexistence and first-order behavior. Here we apply a generalized mean-field approximation for the master equation of the model that considers states of an aggregate of L lattice sites. The phase diagram of the model for values of L up to 10 is obtained, and for some values of the diffusion rate extrapolations to infinite-sized systems are given. For low-diffusive systems, approximations with L≥3 are able to reveal the suppression of the phase coexistence induced by diffusion, however, in the high-diffusion regime, larger values of L are necessary to correctly account for the higher range of correlations. We present a very efficient method to study the mean-field equations and determine the nature of the phase transitions that may be of general utility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of anesthetics on inflammation and oxidative parameters, evaluated in patients without comorbidities undergoing minor surgery, remain unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the inflammatory and oxidative stress status in adult patients undergoing elective minimally invasive surgery, using different anesthetic techniques. METHODS Thirty patients classified as ASA physical status I, who were scheduled for minor surgeries (tympanoplasty or septoplasty), were randomly allocated into two groups: balanced (BAL) anesthesia maintained with isoflurane or total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with propofol. Blood samples were drawn prior to the induction of anesthesia (baseline), 120 min after the beginning of anesthesia and one day after surgery. The proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 was determined by flow cytometry; DNA oxidation was evaluated by the single cell gel electrophoresis assay, and plasma malondialdehyde (lipid peroxidation biomarker) and antioxidant status were determined through fluorometry. RESULTS Increased IL-6 was observed one day after surgery in both groups (P=0.0001). Malondialdehyde levels did not change among the time points assessed or between the groups (P>0.05). Whereas BAL anesthesia had no effect on acid nucleic and antioxidant status, TIVA decreased oxidized/alkylated purines (P=0.03) and increased antioxidant status (P=0.002) during anesthesia. The two groups did not differ significantly in DNA oxidation or antioxidant status (P>0.05). CONCLUSION BAL anesthesia maintained with isoflurane and TIVA maintained with propofol are safe by virtue of not causing oxidative stress status in ASA physical status I patients undergoing minimally invasive surgeries. Moreover, even in minor surgeries, TIVA with propofol produces an antioxidant effect in patients.

Abstract
The solid-fluid coexistence properties of the n - 6 Lennard-Jones system, n from 7 to 12, are reported. The procedure relies on determining Helmholtz free energy curves as a function of volume for each phase independently, from several NVT simulations, and then connecting it to points of known absolute free energy. For n = 12 this requires connecting the simulated points to states of very low densities on the liquid phase, and to a harmonic crystal for the solid phase, which involves many extra simulations for each temperature. For the reference points of the remaining systems, however, the free energy at a given density and temperature can be calculated relative to the n = 12 system. The method presented here involves a generalization of the multiple histogram method to combine simulations performed with different potentials, provided they visit overlapping regions of the phase space, and allows for a precise calculation of relative free energies. The densities, free energies, average potential energies, pressure, and chemical potential at coexistence are presented for up to T∗ = 5.0 and new estimations of the triple points are given for the n - 6 Lennard-Jones system.

Abstract
We analyze critical phenomena on networks generated as the union of hidden variable models (networks with any desired degree sequence) with arbitrary graphs. The resulting networks are general small worlds similar to those à la Watts and Strogatz, but with a heterogeneous degree distribution. We prove that the critical behavior (thermal or percolative) remains completely unchanged by the presence of finite loops (or finite clustering). Then, we show that, in large but finite networks, correlations of two given spins may be strong, i.e., approximately power-law-like, at any temperature. Quite interestingly, if γ is the exponent for the power-law distribution of the vertex degree, for γ≤3 and with or without short-range couplings, such strong correlations persist even in the thermodynamic limit, contradicting the common opinion that, in mean-field models, correlations always disappear in this limit. Finally, we provide the optimal choice of rewiring under which percolation phenomena in the rewired network are best performed, a natural criterion to reach best communication features, at least in noncongested regimes.

Abstract
We perform simulations of random Ising models defined over small-world networks and we check the validity and the level of approximation of a recently proposed effective field theory. Simulations confirm a rich scenario with the presence of multicritical points with first- or second-order phase transitions. In particular, for second-order phase transitions, independent of the dimension d0 of the underlying lattice, the exact predictions of the theory in the paramagnetic regions, such as the location of critical surfaces and correlation functions, are verified. Quite interestingly, we verify that the Edwards-Anderson model with d0=2 is not thermodynamically stable under graph noise.

Abstract
We obtained Pearson's coefficient of strongly correlated recursive networks growing by preferential attachment of every new vertex by m edges. We found that the Pearson coefficient is exactly zero in the infinite network limit for the recursive trees (m=1). If the number of connections of new vertices exceeds one (m>1), then the Pearson coefficient in the infinite networks equals zero only when the degree distribution exponent gamma does not exceed 4. We calculated the Pearson coefficient for finite networks and observed a slow power-law-like approach to an infinite network limit. Our findings indicate that Pearson's coefficient strongly depends on size and details of networks, which makes this characteristic virtually useless for quantitative comparison of different networks.

Abstract
Lycopene is a natural pigment synthesized by plants and microorganisms, and it is mainly found in tomatoes. It is an acyclic isomer of beta-carotene and one of the most potent antioxidants. Several studies have demonstrated the ability of lycopene to prevent chemically induced DNA damage; however, the mechanisms involved are still not clear. In the present study, we investigated the antigenotoxic/antimutagenic effects of lycopene in Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells (CHO) treated with hydrogen peroxide, methylmethanesulphonate (MMS), or 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO). Lycopene (97%), at final concentrations of 10, 25, and 50 microM, was tested under three different protocols: before, simultaneously, and after the treatment with the mutagens. Comet and cytokinesis-block micronucleus assays were used to evaluate the level of DNA damage. Data showed that lycopene reduced the frequency of micronucleated cells induced by the three mutagens. However, this chemopreventive activity was dependent on the concentrations and treatment schedules used. Similar results were observed in the comet assay, although some enhancements of primary DNA damage were detected when the carotenoid was administered after the mutagens. In conclusion, our findings confirmed the chemopreventive activity of lycopene, and showed that this effect occurs under different mechanisms.

Abstract
Recombinant adenoviruses became one of the vectors of choice for delivery and expression of foreign proteins for gene therapy and vaccination purposes. Nevertheless, the production of adenovirus is currently limited by the so-called "cell density effect", i.e., a drop in cell specific productivity concomitant with increased cell concentration at infection (CCI). This work describes the characterisation and optimisation of the infection process in order to improve recombinant adenovirus type 5 yields at high cell densities. For that purpose, 293 cells adapted to suspension were grown in 2l bioreactors and infected at different cell concentrations, using different re-feed strategies, while evaluating cell metabolism. The consumption of amino acids is enhanced during infection, although no amino acid limitation was detected for cells infected at concentrations in the range of 2 x 10(6)cell/ml, for which the highest volumetric productivity was obtained in batch mode. Conversely, infecting at cell concentrations in the range of 3 x10(6)cell/ml led to complete depletion of glucose, glutamine and threonine before the optimal harvesting time, a significant decrease in volumetric productivity being observed; the effect of amino acids and glucose addition at infection time on cell specific and volumetric productivity of adenovirus was assessed, no improvement on adenovirus production being achieved. The effect of ammonia, present in high concentrations at 3 x10(6)cell/ml, was evaluated and seem to be detrimental; an 1.8-fold increase on adenovirus volumetric productivity was obtained for infections performed at 3 x10(6)cell/ml when non-ammoniagenic medium was used.

Abstract
AIM To examine the surfaces of a root tip removed during surgical endodontic treatment for the presence of microorganisms. SUMMARY The present clinical case illustrates an endodontic retreatment of a maxillary premolar tooth with a fistula and periapical reaction. The case was under treatment for 1 year, during which an intracanal medicament was replaced several times. As the lesion did not decrease and exudate was persistent through the fistula and root canal, root end resection with root end filling was performed. Microbiological samples were collected from the fistula, where Propionibacterium acnes, a species associated with endodontic failures, was detected by appropriate anaerobic technique. The resected root apex was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed cocci and fungal forms surrounding one of the foramina. After 12 months, the periapical lesion had reduced.

Abstract
Between 1985 and 2000, epidemiological surveys of the American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) were carried out in several rural and urban communities in Espírito Santo, Brazil. A total of 100 stocks of Leishmania (comprising isolates from both human and canine hosts with ATL) were identified by two methods of molecular characterization, using specific monoclonal antibodies and multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. Parasite isolates from 19 municipalities were found to belong to the same zymodeme and serodeme type as of the Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis reference strain. In contrast, our genotyping studies have shown intra-specific variation among these parasites (comparisons of the variability of the internal transcribed spacers between the small and large subunits of the rRNA genes of the 22 stocks studied revealed at least 11 genotypes). Two main clusters of L. (V.) braziliensis genotypes were observed, representing parasites collected from different endemic regions in the state, where transmission reflects distinct eco-epidemiological features. Infection with this pathogen was associated with the characteristic disease forms, but neither the clinical outcome nor the response to treatment could be related to the genetic polymorphism of the isolates, as defined by using the proposed methodology.

Abstract
The effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on wound healing were evaluated at the graft-cornea transition in dogs following lamellar keratoplasty using tunica vaginalis preserved in 98% glycerin. Twenty-one dogs were subdivided into three groups of seven animals. The first group (W/US) received daily treatment of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (20 mW/cm2) for 15 min for the first 10 days post surgery. The second group (N/US) was submitted to the same procedure but with the ultrasound apparatus turned off. The third group, the control (CO), underwent the surgical procedure only. The animals were clinically evaluated during the initial (1-15 days), intermediate (16-30 days) and late (31-120 days) postoperative period. The corneas were evaluated by light microscopy at 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, 60 and 120 days after surgery. Clinically, there were no differences which would promote an advantage to any of the treatments. Light microscopy, however, revealed more extensive vascularization and more advanced wound healing in the W/US group, as well as a tendency towards early graft incorporation. Based on the present results, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound shows advantages, especially in situations where trophic support is a mandatory condition, facilitating better graft incorporation and rapid recovery of stromal organization.

Abstract
The involvement of different sand fly species in the transmission of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) at different altitudes was evaluated in the municipality of Afonso Cláudio in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, from November 1995 to February 1997. CDC light traps and Shannon traps baited with human volunteers were hung simultaneously at three altitudes of a river valley: (a) 650-750 m in an area of active ACL transmission; (b) 750-850 m in a transitional area; and (c) 850-950 m in an area where no ACL transmission occurred. A total of 13,363 specimens belonging to 28 species was collected. The five most abundant man-biting species were Lutzomyia intermedia, which constituted 24.3% of the total, Lu. migonei (22.3%), Lu. whitmani (15.4%), Lu. fischeri (14.9%) and Lu. monticola (5.8%). Analysis of the distribution of these species at the three altitudes provided evidence that Lu. fischeri and Lu. monticola were not involved in ACL transmission, whereas Lu. migonei and Lu. whitmani might act as secondary vectors of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Lu. intermedia was probably the principal vector of the parasite. These results reinforce those published in the existing literature, which indicate that Lu. intermedia is the main vector of Le. (V.) braziliensis in Southeast Brazil, while Lu. migonei and Lu. whitmani are of secondary importance.

Abstract
Based upon some problems faced by health professionals in the care of abused children, this is a discussion of the ethical implications in family interventions aiming to protect these children. Accepting the prima facie principle that violence is morally wrong, some issues related to the children's rights as well as some ethical theories such as consequentialism, utilitarianism and deontology are discussed. The conclusion is that the protection of these children is morally justifiable and the maintenance of the families' unity should always be attempted.

Abstract
To determine lycopene uptake and tissue distribution in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) and F344 rats, we supplemented orally 4.6 mg/(kg body wt.d) lycopene in a tomato oleoresin-corn oil mixture (experimental groups). After 9 wk of supplementation, the animals were killed and blood and organs were collected. Plasma and tissue carotenoids were extracted and measured using HPLC. Mean concentrations of lycopene (nmol/kg wet tissue) in saponified tissues of ferrets were as follows: liver 933, intestine 73, prostate 12.7 and stomach 9.3. Levels of lycopene (nmol/kg wet tissue) in saponified tissue of rats were as follows: liver 14213, intestine 3125, stomach 78.6, prostate 24 and testis 3.9. When these organs were extracted without saponification, the lycopene levels were lower, except for rat testis. All-trans-lycopene was the predominant isomer found in tomato oleoresin and in the majority of rat tissues, whereas cis-lycopenes were predominant in rat prostate and plasma. This pattern was reversed in ferrets. The results show the following: 1) lycopene from tomato oleoresin is absorbed and stored primarily in the liver of both animals; 2) saponification generally improves the extraction of lycopene from most tissues of both animals; 3) cis-lycopene and all-trans-lycopene are the predominant isomers in ferret and rat tissues, respectively; and 4) rats absorb lycopene more effectively than ferrets.

Abstract
We show how to use the multiple histogram method to combine canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations made at different temperatures and densities. The method can be applied to study systems of particles with arbitrary interaction potential and to compute the thermodynamic properties over a range of temperatures and densities. The calculation of the Helmholtz free energy relative to some thermodynamic reference state enables us to study phase coexistence properties. We test the method on the Lennard-Jones fluids for which many results are available.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Domestic violence against children has been a subject of concern to many Brazilian institutions, though there are few studies about the services offered to the community. The aim of this study is to evaluate administrative and operational aspects of the SOS Criança and provide insight to similar programs with comparative data. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 976 data sheets of investigated cases until 1993 was conducted. Study variables were: characteristics of the support program required, proceedings to investigate reported cases, follow-up duration of reported cases, and referrals to other institutions. RESULTS Out of 976 data sheets analyzed, 587 involved domestic violence against children: 38.7% cases of physical abuse, 27.7% of neglect, 26.3% of psychological abuse and 7.3% of sexual abuse. Most of the complaints (32.5%) came from family members of victimized children. The program's investigation process took between 126 to 212 days. Each investigated case demanded an average of 2.7 to 4.6 procedures. The majority of the cases (44.0%) were referred to a law court. This study emphasizes the need of a computerized database for optimizing the services provided and the victims' follow-up. It also suggests the need of ongoing staff training and development of broader and stronger connections to the social and health services.

Abstract
The possible relations between carotenoid status and their health indicators were investigated in an elderly group aged 60-75 years. Fasting serum samples were taken from 41 healthy subjects (20 men and 21 women). The concentrations of carotenoids and vitamin A of serum samples were assayed by HPLC. The results showed that vitamin A level of seven subjects was lower than 0.3 mg/L. Lutein and Zeaxanthin were the predominant carotenoids in serum. The concentration of total carotenoids had inverse correlations with blood glucose, serum cholesterol and triglyceride, and blood pressure. Carotenoids were inversely and significantly correlated with diastolic pressure and body mass index.

Abstract
The free form of the iron ion is one of the strongest oxidizing agents in the cellular environment. The effect of iron at different concentrations (0, 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 microM Fe3+) on the normal human red blood cell (RBC) antioxidant system was evaluated in vitro by measuring total (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and reductase (GSH-Rd) activities. Membrane lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS). The RBC were incubated with colloidal iron hydroxide and phosphate-buffered saline, pH 7.45, at 37 degrees C, for 60 min. For each assay, the results for the control group were: a) GSH = 3.52 +/- 0.27 microM/g Hb; b) GSSG = 0.17 +/- 0.03 microM/g Hb; c) GSH-Px = 19.60 +/- 1.96 IU/g Hb; d) GSH-Rd = 3.13 +/- 0.17 IU/g Hb; e) catalase = 394.9 +/- 22.8 IU/g Hb; f) SOD = 5981 +/- 375 IU/g Hb. The addition of 1 to 100 microM Fe3+ had no effect on the parameters analyzed. No change in TBARS levels was detected at any of the iron concentrations studied. Oxidative stress, measured by GSH kinetics over time, occurs when the RBC are incubated with colloidal iron hydroxide at concentrations higher than 10 microM of Fe3+. Overall, these results show that the intact human RBC is prone to oxidative stress when exposed to Fe3+ and that the RBC has a potent antioxidant system that can minimize the potential damage caused by acute exposure to a colloidal iron hydroxide in vitro.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the correlation between the clinical diagnosis and autopsy findings in adult patients who died in an intensive care unit (ICU). To determine the rate of agreement of the basic and terminal causes of death and the types of errors in order to improve quality control of future care. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING Adult ICU in a university hospital. PATIENTS 30 adult patients who died in the ICU, with the exclusion of medicolegal cases. METHODS AND MAIN RESULTS Anatomo-clinical meetings were held to analyze the pre- and postmortem correlations in 30 consecutive autopsies at the ICU of the University Hospital, School of Medicine of Botucatu/ UNESP, from January 1994 to January 1997. The rate of correct clinical diagnoses of the basic cause was 66.7%; in 23.3% of cases, if the correct diagnosis was made, management would have been different, as would have been the evolution of the patient's course (Class I error); in 10% of the cases the error would not have led to a change in management (Class II error). The rate of correct clinical diagnoses of terminal cause was 80%. CONCLUSIONS The rate of recognition of the basic cause was 66.7%, which is consistent with the literature, but the Class I error rate was higher than that reported in the literature.

The ovarian response to COH was classified as strong (< or = 50 hMG ampules, peak E2 levels > 2,500 pg/mL, and > or = 10 mature oocytes; n = 340), weak (> 50 hMG ampules, peak E2 levels < or = 1,500 pg/mL, and < or = 5 mature oocytes; n = 285), or intermediate (remaining cases; n = 564). The IVF-ET outcome in each group was analyzed according to whether or not plasma P levels exceeded 0.9 ng/mL. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Pregnancy rates (PRs). RESULT(S) Clinical PRs were similar irrespective of low or high P levels in the strong (30% and 34%, respectively) and intermediate (31% and 30%, respectively) groups. However, in the weak group, P levels > 0.9 ng/mL were associated with lower PRs (3.2% and 23%, respectively). CONCLUSION(S) In the presence of an adequate response to COH, P levels > 0.9 ng/mL were not associated with lower PRs, indicating that good embryo quality may compensate for the adverse endometrial effects of P. Conversely, when the response to COH was weak, premature P elevation led to drastically reduced PRs.

Abstract
The study's purpose was to evaluate the reduction of dental caries incidence by the association of two preventive methods. 246 students of both sexes aged from 7 to 11 years registered in "Escola de Educação Básica da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia" and living in the urbana area of Uberlândia, state of Minas Gerais, were examined. The sample was distributed into two groups: children from Group 1, which received a semestral topical application of Acidulated Fluor Phosphate at 1.23% and children from Group II, that besides the topical application above related (Group I) also received weekly mouthwashes of sodium fluoride aquesus solution at 0.2%. After two years of study DMFS index were tabled and statistically analysed. It was verified a reduction of 33.97% in the incidence of dental caries (in the permanent dentition). The difference between the Groups was significant at 5% level of confidence.

Abstract
A postmortem study of the capacity of the coronary arteries is presented. The amount of injected Schlessinger's barium-gelatin mass taken up by the coronary arterial tree under standard conditions was used as a measure of coronary capacity. A total of 63 hearts, consisting of those with Chagas' cardiopathy, normal hearts, and hypertrophied hearts, were studied. Correlation coefficients between coronary capacity and heart weight, as well as index of coronary capacity based on heart weight, were the parameters submitted to statistical analysis. Positive correlation coefficients between coronary capacity and heart weight were detected in normal and chagasic cases but not in hypertrophied cases. Multiple comparisons of the indexes showed a highly significant increase of coronary capacity in chagasic cases when compared with normal (p less than 0.005) and hypertrophied hearts (p less than 0.01). The characteristic parasympathetic denervation, resulting in a relative sympathetic overdrive, is suggested to be the basic cause of enlargement of the coronary tree in Chagas' heart disease, thus providing further support for the neurogenic pathogenetic concept.

Abstract
Foram estudadas as lesões provocadas nas artérias carótidas de cobaias (Cavia porcellus), com diâmetros variando de 1 a 2 mm, submetidas à clampagem temporária (10 e 30 minutos), com microclampes empregados em microneurocirurgia, utilizando-se injeção intravital da mistura de gelatina líquida e tinta da China para contrastação dos vasa vasorum. As artérias foram diafanizadas e observadas ao microscópio óptico e posteriormente observadas através de cortes histológicos. Foram verificadas lesões agudas na íntima, na camada média e na rede de vasa vasorum adventicial, que ocorreram independentemente da duração da clampagem. Os resultados sugerem que existe uma pressão crítica exercida pelos microclampes, acima da qual deixa de haver uma relação direta entre a pressão exercida e o grau de lesão da parede arterial. A observação das artérias 30 dias após a clampagem temporária evidenciou recuperação parcial em relação às lesões agudas embora tenham persistido alterações na íntima e na camada média, que poderão constituir pontos fracos na parede arterial. As alterações graves dos vasa vasorum observadas agudamente e o quadro morfológico reacional verificado tardiamente não apresentaram diferenças quanto à pressão exercida pelo microclampe. Não foi possível correlacionar o grau de lesão da parede arterial e as alterações dos vasa vasorum. O trauma mecânico provocado pelas lâminas do microclampe pareceu mais importante na gênese destas lesões. Apesar das lesões graves observadas na parede das artérias clampadas temporariamente, em nenhum caso verificou-se trombose e oclusão vascular no local da clampagem.

Abstract
The interstitial space of the ductus epididymidis of the opossum (D. azarae), contains fibers and cell elements of the connective tissue, smooth muscle cells and amyelinic nerve fibers. This structure, studied through TEM, is similar to the fine structure of the interstitium of the epididymis in rodents. However, the normal occurrence of mast cells in the interstitial space of the ductus epididymidis in opossum, seems to be a peculiar morphological characteristic of this species.

The luminal content of the cauda epididymidis of the opossum has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The content is represented by single and paired spermatozoa. Subcellular features of both spermatozoa and their cytological components have been described on the basis of the morphology of spermatozoa in the epididymis of other metatherian forms.
