Abstract
Drug-induced QT prolongation has been reported in humans and animals. This potentially lethal effect can be induced by drugs interacting with a cardiac potassium channel, namely hERG (human ether-a go-go-related gene) leading to arrhythmia or torsade de pointes (TdP). Hence, in vitro evaluation of therapeutics for their effects on the rapid delayed rectifier current (IKr) mediated by the K(+) ion channel encoded by hERG is a valuable tool for identifying potential arrhythmic side effects during drug safety testing. Our objective was to evaluate the temperature-induced hERG channel blockade variation by human and veterinary drugs using the IonFlux 16 system. A panel of eight drugs was tested for IKr inhibition at both ambient (23 °C) and physiological (37 °C) temperatures at various concentrations using IonFlux 16, an automated patch clamp system. Our results established that both amiodarone (IC(50) = 0.56 μM at 23 °C and 0.30 μM at 37 °C) and β-estradiol (IC(50) = 24.72 μM at 23 °C and 8.17 μM at 37 °C) showed a dose-dependent IKr blockade with a higher blockade at 37 °C. Whereas, blockade of IKr by both ivermectin (IC(50) = 12.52 μM at 23 °C and 24.41 μM at 37 °C) and frusemide (IC(50) = 12.58 μM at 23 °C and 25.55 μM at 37 °C) showed a dose-dependent IKr blockade with a lower blockade at 37 °C. Gentamicin, enrofloxacin, xylazine and albendazole did not block IKr at both the assessed temperatures. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the effect of temperature variation should be taken into consideration during the evaluation of test drugs for their hERG channel blockade potential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Primary lens extraction has been advocated for acute primary angle closure (APAC), but it is not known if this is warranted in all cases. The aim of this study was to investigate the visual acuity (VA) of APAC eyes shortly after resolution of the acute episode in order to assess the appropriateness of performing such surgery in this condition. METHODS This was a prospective observational case series. As part of a randomised controlled trial comparing phacoemulsification and laser iridotomy, 135 consecutive APAC subjects over a 2 year period underwent subjective refraction and measurement of Snellen VA once the acute episode had resolved with reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) and improved corneal clarity. RESULTS Subjects were predominantly Chinese (95.6%) and female (79.3%), with a mean age of 63.6 (SD 9.6) years. When assessed 1.7 (2.7) days after presentation, the majority of APAC cases (50.4%) had good VA (6/12 or better), with more than a quarter of cases having VA of 6/7.5 or better. Poor VA was associated with duration of symptoms (p = 0.04, OR = 4.1, 95% CI 1.1 to 15.7) and time taken to resolution of APAC (p = 0.04, OR = 2.2, 95% CI 1.02 to 4.6), but not with sex (p = 0.31), age (p = 0.26), duration from presentation to measurement of visual acuity (p = 0.53), or presenting IOP (p = 0.73). CONCLUSION Within days after APAC, more than half of APAC affected eyes had good VA (6/12 or better). The role of lens extraction in the management of APAC warrants further debate, especially for eyes with good VA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Choroidal expansion with anterior movement of the lens was recently proposed as a mechanism for acute primary angle closure (APAC). The aim of this study was to compare the biometric parameters, central anterior chamber depth, limbal chamber depth, lens thickness, and lens position, within 24 hours of presentation and 2 weeks later in eyes with APAC. METHODS This was a prospective observational case series of 41 subjects with APAC. Subjects who presented with APAC were treated with medical therapy followed by laser iridotomy (LI) in both eyes once the acute attack was broken. Ocular biometry was performed in affected and fellow eyes before LI (baseline) and then 2 weeks later. Optical pachymetry was used to measure central anterior chamber depth (ACD) and the limbal chamber depth (LCD) was graded at the slit lamp. A-scan ultrasound was used to measure lens thickness (LT) and axial length (AL). Lens position (LP) was defined as ACD +(1/2)LT. RESULTS The majority of subjects were Chinese (83%) and female (61%), and the mean age was 60.4 (SD 10.3) years. In affected eyes, the ACD was 1.81 (0.29) mm before and 1.80 (0.28) mm 2 weeks after LI (p = 0.63), while in fellow eyes, the ACD was 1.83 (0.29) mm and 1.81 (0.38) mm, respectively (p = 0.21). There was no significant change in lens position, relative lens position, or axial length in both affected and fellow eyes over the 2 weeks. CONCLUSIONS There was no change observed in central anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, or lens position at the time of the acute attack compared to 2 weeks later in both APAC affected and fellow eyes. The findings do not support the hypothesis of lens movement due to choroidal expansion in APAC.

Abstract
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. East Asians account for approximately half of all glaucoma sufferers. It is likely that trabeculectomy will be needed for many of these people as the intraocular pressure is to be maintained at a satisfactorily low level. The eyes of East Asian people differ in some aspects from those of other races. This review describes the natural history of the eye after trabeculectomy in East Asians.

Abstract
AIM To determine the prevalence rates and major contributing causes of low vision and blindness in adults in a rural setting in Indonesia METHODS A population based prevalence survey of adults 21 years or older (n=989) was conducted in five rural villages and one provincial town in Sumatra, Indonesia. One stage household cluster sampling procedure was employed where 100 households were randomly selected from each village or town. Bilateral low vision was defined as habitual VA (measured using tumbling "E" logMAR charts) in the better eye worse than 6/18 and 3/60 or better, based on the WHO criteria. Bilateral blindness was defined as habitual VA worse than 3/60 in the better eye. The anterior segment and lens of subjects with low vision or blindness (both unilateral and bilateral) (n=66) were examined using a portable slit lamp and fundus examination was performed using indirect ophthalmoscopy. RESULTS The overall age adjusted (adjusted to the 1990 Indonesia census population) prevalence rate of bilateral low vision was 5.8% (95% confidence interval (CI) 4.2 to 7.4) and bilateral blindness was 2.2% (95% CI 1.1 to 3.2). The rates of low vision and blindness increased with age. The major contributing causes for bilateral low vision were cataract (61.3%), uncorrected refractive error (12.9%), and amblyopia (12.9%), and the major cause of bilateral blindness was cataract (62.5%). The major causes of unilateral low vision were cataract (48.0%) and uncorrected refractive error (12.0%), and major causes of unilateral blindness were amblyopia (50.0%) and trauma (50.0%). CONCLUSIONS The rates of habitual low vision and blindness in provincial Sumatra, Indonesia, are similar to other developing rural countries in Asia. Blindness is largely preventable, as the major contributing causes (cataract and uncorrected refractive error) are amenable to treatment.

Abstract
Immunization with dendritic cells (DCs) transfected with genes encoding tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) is a highly promising approach to cancer immunotherapy. We have developed a system, using complexes of plasmid DNA expression constructs with the cationic peptide CL22, that transfects human monocyte-derived DCs much more efficiently than alternative nonviral agents. After CL22 transfection, DCs expressing antigens stimulated autologous T cells in vitro and elicited primary immune responses in syngeneic mice, in an antigen-specific manner. Injection of CL22-transfected DCs expressing a TAA, but not DCs pulsed with a TAA-derived peptide, protected mice from lethal challenge with tumor cells in an aggressive model of melanoma. The CL22 system is a fast and efficient alternative to viral vectors for engineering DCs for use in immunotherapy and research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine clinical outcomes of primary intracapsular cataract surgery with and without implantation of anterior chamber lenses. DESIGN A multicenter randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS One thousand two hundred twenty-nine male and female patients 40-75 years of age with senile cataract. METHODS Study patients were recruited from screening eye camps and outpatient clinics. Randomization to the two treatment groups was performed after screening for predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Demographics, visual acuity, intraocular pressures, and corneal endothelial cell data were recorded before surgery and at 6 weeks, 12 months, and 24 months after surgery. Monitoring of the study was secured by a standardized image documentation procedure on all patients using the IMAGEnet digital imaging system. Analysis of corneal endothelial cell images was performed with the Cell Soft software (Topcon Corporation, Japan). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Visual acuity and central corneal endothelial cell loss. RESULTS The patients were randomized to intraocular lens (IOL; n = 616) and no IOL (n = 613) implantation. Surgical complications were reported in 177 (14.4%) patients (IOL = 14.8%; no IOL = 14.0%). The most frequent complication observed was vitreous loss which occurred in 10.3% of eyes (IOL = 11.2%; no IOL = 9.5%). At the final examination (2 years after surgery), 88% of the operated eyes had a best corrected vision of 6/18 or better (IOL = 88.8%; no IOL = 86.6%). Analysis of corneal endothelial cell data showed a small but significantly greater cell loss 6 weeks after surgery in eyes with IOL compared with those without IOL, but no overall difference was found between the treatment groups in the long term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that there is a rationale for the use of anterior chamber intraocular lenses in primary intracapsular cataract surgery.

Abstract
In the present study restorative potential of fetal cholinergic rich cell suspensions in ameliorating cognitive deficits in rats perinatally exposed to lead was studied. Lactating dams with 1-day old litters were given 0.2% (w/v) lead acetate in drinking water throughout lactation from postnatal day (PND) 1 to PND21 at the end of which the treatment was stopped and the animals were weaned. On PND42 lead exposed rats were given bilateral, intrahippocampal, cholinergic rich fetal neural transplants (approximately 60,000 cells per site) and subsequently assessed 3 and 6 months posttransplantation. Control animals (Sham operated and transplanted) were also run in parallel. Lead exposed rats exhibited a decreased learning ability and locomotor activity. A significant decrease in the levels of acetylcholinesterase and sodium potassium ATPase Na+,K+-ATPase activity was observed in hippocampal region of lead exposed rats. The levels of lead were increased by fivefold in the hippocampal region of lead exposed rats. Transplantation showed marginal improvement in the above impairments at 3 months which were more marked at 6 months. Lead levels at 6 months were not significantly higher in lead exposed rats as compared with the control. Results confirm previous findings that fetal neural transplants help in restoring the lost functional deficits and demonstrate their restorative potential in case of lead induced deficits.

Abstract
Trimethyltin (TMT) apart from causing cholinergic denervation of the hippocampus, damages the serotonergic inputs into the hippocampus as well. In the present study, fetal cholinergic and serotonergic rich neuronal populations from septal and raphe regions, respectively, were transplanted alone or in combination (as co-grafts) in the hippocampus of TMT exposed rats. Neurotransmitter receptor binding and neurotransmitter levels were assayed 6 months post-transplantation. Fetal septal transplants (rich in cholinergic neurons) significantly restored the deficits in cholinergic (muscarinic) receptor binding and acetylcholinesterase activity caused by TMT exposure. Raphe transplants (rich in serotonergic neurons) restored the deficit in serotonergic receptor binding and serotonin levels caused by TMT. Co-grafts of fetal raphe and septal neurons restored both the cholinergic (muscarinic) and serotonergic receptor functions. The results suggest that co-grafting technique could provide a better restoration of functional deficits when more than one type of neuronal population is damaged.

Abstract
AIM The management of suppurative keratitis due to filamentous fungi presents severe problems in tropical countries. The aim was to demonstrate the efficacy of chlorhexidine 0.2% drops as an inexpensive antimicrobial agent, which could be widely distributed for fungal keratitis. METHODS Successive patients presenting to the Chittagong Eye Institute and Training Complex with corneal ulcers were admitted to the trial when fungal hyphae had been seen on microscopy. They were randomised to drop treatment with chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% or the standard local treatment natamycin 2.5%. The diameters, depths, and other features of the ulcers were measured and photographed at regular intervals. The outcome measures were healing at 21 days and presence or absence of toxicity. If there was not a favourable response at 5 days, "treatment failure" was recorded and the treatment was changed to one or more of three options, which included econazole 1% in the latter part of the trial. RESULTS 71 patients were recruited to the trial, of which 35 were randomised to chlorhexidine and 36 to natamycin. One allocated to natamycin grew bacteria and therefore was excluded from the analysis. None of the severe ulcers was fully healed at 21 days of treatment, but three of those allocated to chlorhexidine eventually healed in times up to 60 days. Of the nonsevere ulcers, 66.7% were healed at 21 days with chlorhexidine and 36.0% with natamycin, a relative efficacy (RE) of 1.85 (CL 1.01-3.39, p = 0.04). If those ulcers were excluded where fungi were seen in the scraping but did not grow on culture, the estimated efficacy ratio does not change but becomes less precise because of smaller numbers. Equal numbers of Aspergillus (22) and Fusarium (22) were grown. The Aspergillus were the most resistant to either primary treatment. CONCLUSIONS Chlorhexidine may have potential as an inexpensive topical agent for fungal keratitis and warrants further assessment as a first line treatment in situations where microbiological facilities and a range of antifungal agents are not available.

Abstract
Typhoid group of fevers pose a major threat and are a cause of high morbidity and mortality in the tropical countries. Over the last decade there has been a steady increase in the development of multiresistant strains of Salmonellae all over the world. Multiresistance ranges between 5% to 86%. In a recent study in Pakistan multidrug resistance in Salmonellae has increased to over 39%. Hence alternative therapy is needed. Fluroquinolones are an effective alternative requiring a shorter course of treatment than conventional antimicrobial agents. Lomefloxacin because of its longer half life and convenient BD dose was used in a multicentre study to treat cases of typhoid group of fevers including cases due to multiresistant isolates. In order to overcome the challenge presented by the multiresistant salmoneallae, a dual purpose multicentre study was conducted in two stages. The first stage included a vitro study and the second in vivo study. Two hundred local salmonellae isolates were collected and their sensitivity and minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by standard methods. Two hundred and fourteen patients clinically suspected of suffering from typhoid groups of fevers were given Lomefloxacin 200 mg. BD for 14 days. Forty percent of Salmonellae isolates were found to be multiresistant while only 2% were found to be resistant to Fluroqunilones. The mean MIC 90 was found to be 0.06 mg/L Lomefloxacin was found to be effective in over 97% cases for treating typhoid group fevers including the ones due to multiresistant isolates. The side effects were found to be minimal and transient.

Abstract
Trimethyltin produces a selective loss of pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus resulting in functional deficits. The present study was aimed to assess the comparative restoration of behavioural and neurochemical deficits in trimethyltin chloride (7.5 mg/Kg body weight, i.p) treated rats following single or multiple site fetal hippocampal transplants. Exposure to trimethyltin caused a decrease in learning ability (51 %), an increase in locomotor activity (92 %) and decrease in acetylcholinesterase activity (36%) and muscarinic receptor binding (31%). Trimethyltin treated rats receiving multiple transplants of fetal hippocampal cell suspension (0.25 μl at 8 stereotaxic coordinates) showed significant restoration of the functional deficits 4 weeks post transplantation. This restoration by multiple site transplants persisted upto 16 weeks post transplantation. Restoration of the above deficits by single site transplants (2 μl at a single coordinate), 4 weeks post transplantation was less marked in comparison to multiple transplants and was evident only in learning ability and muscarinic receptor binding after 16 weeks of transplantation. The results suggest that multiple site transplants provide better restoration , on long term basis, in chemical induced neurodegeneration.

Abstract
The neurotoxic action of a synthetic pyrethroid, a deltamethrin formulation (Decis), was studied in adult rats. Adult male albino rats received deltamethrin in formulation at a dose of 7.0 mg/kg body weight/d in corn oil orally for 15 d. Deltamethrin-exposed rats exhibited a decrease in body weight from d 9 onward, which was significantly lowered at d 15 of exposure. Administration of deltamethrin markedly increased the wet weight of the hippocampus and pons medulla region without much affecting the weight of frontal cortex, corpus striatum, hypothalamus, and cerebellum. A significant increase in the activity of monoamine oxidase was observed in frontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum, and acetylcholinesterase activity was markedly increased in frontal cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, cerebellum, and pons medulla. The activity of Na+,K(+)-ATPase showed marked decrease in frontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum following deltamethrin exposure. The polyamine concentration in brain regions was significantly affected, and all three polyamines showed marked alterations in the cerebellum. Deltamethrin significantly increased the spontaneous locomotor activity and aggressive behavior. Maze learning was markedly decreased. Morphological changes in Purkinje neurons in the cerebellum were observed in deltamethrin-exposed rats. Results suggest significant neurochemical and neuromorphological changes, which may culminate in perturbed synaptic function following deltamethrin exposure in rats.

Abstract
Effect of lead exposure and iron-deficiency on polyamine levels in neuronal and glial cells of cerebellum and hippocampus was investigated in weaned rats. Lactating dams with one day old litters were given 0.2% (w/v) lead acetate in drinking water from postnatal day one to twenty one and maintained on an iron-deficient diet. There was an overall reduction of putrescine, spermidine and spermine in neuronal and glial cells of cerebellum and hippocampus consequent to lead exposure and iron-deficiency alone. Lead exposure and iron-deficiency together did not potentiate the polyamine levels in neuronal and glial cells of cerebellum and hippocampus uniformly. However, the enhanced lowering of putrescine in the hippocampal glia, spermidine in cerebellar neuronal and spermine in both neuronal and glial cells of cerebellum during the critical stage of brain development may result in stunted neuronal growth and sprouting in lead exposed and iron-deficient animals. The behavioral alterations as observed in the present study may be due to impaired neuronal development resulting from a depressed polyamine pathway and which could be attributed to cognitive deficits in growing children.

Abstract
The investigation examined the possibility that observance of Ramadan by Moslems in Malaysia is associated with modification of circulatory parameters. Cardiovascular reactivity was investigated employing the cold hand immersion test as the stressor stimulus. Resultant data showed increased blood pressures and vascular resistance during Ramadan in the absence of cold stimulus while the magnitude of the maximal cardiac and vascular response to the applied stressor which served as indicators of reactivity was not affected by the Ramadan situation.

Abstract
Unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the caudate nucleus of rat caused degeneration of dopaminergic terminals, evidenced by significant (P < 0.05) elevation of spontaneous and drug-induced motor behaviour, enhanced DA receptor binding and significant increase in the neuronal firing rate of caudate neurons, suggesting supersensitivity of dopaminergic receptors. Eight weeks following the transplantation of embryonic cell suspensions from caudate at the lesioned site, a significant restoration of the enhanced 3H spiperone binding and neuronal activity of caudate neurons was observed in comparison with lesioned rats. These results clearly demonstrate that transplanted embryonic neuronal tissue at the lesioned site is capable of restoring the neuronal deficits caused by 6-OHDA as evidenced by significant amelioration in neurochemical, behavioral and electrophysiological alterations.

Abstract
Acrylamide (30 mg/kg body wt.) administered intraperitoneally daily to young adult male rats, five times a week for 3 consecutive weeks, affected the cerebellar functions, as exhibited by a significant reduction in rotarod performance, spontaneous locomotor activity, glutathione-S-transferase activity, and 3H-flunitrazepam binding in cerebellum. Transplantation of dissociated fetal cerebellar cells (E14) to cerebellum resulted in a significant recovery in behavioral and neurochemical parameters evaluated 9 weeks after transplantation. Light- and electron-microscopic studies confirmed the viability and specificity of cerebellar grafts.

Abstract
Neurotoxic effects of styrene on certain biochemical and behavioural indices were studied in young rats kept deficient in protein during the weaning period. Young rats fed a low-protein diet showed a significant decrease in the level of dopamine and an increase in frontocortical [3H]serotonin binding in comparison to the group of rats fed a normal protein diet. These rats also showed a significant increase in foot shock-induced aggressive behaviour, while no changes in amphetamine-induced locomotor activity, levels of norepinephrine and serotonin and binding of [3H]spiperone to striatal membrane were observed. On exposure to styrene, rats fed a normal protein diet showed a decrease in dopamine level and an increase in foot shock-induced aggressive behaviour only, with no significant change in other parameters, in comparison to the respective controls. It was, however, interesting to note that when rats fed a low-protein diet were exposed to styrene they showed a significant decrease in the levels of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin and an increase in the binding of [3H]spiperone and [3H]5-HT to striatal and frontocortical membranes, respectively. A significant increase in foot shock-induced aggressive behaviour and amphetamine-induced locomotor activity was also observed in this group of animals in comparison to those fed a low-protein diet. The biochemical and behavioural data indicate that protein deficiency makes young animals more vulnerable and it is an important predisposing factor in the neurobehavioural toxicity of styrene.

Abstract
In the present communication, we describe acrylamide (ACR) induced immunotoxicity and its modulation by an interferon inducer, the 6th mycelial fraction acetone (6-MFA) of Aspergillus ochraceus ATCC 28706. ACR administration to rats produced a significant decrease in the weight of spleen (p < 0.001), thymus (p < 0.001) and mesenteric lymph nodes (p < 0.05). A decrease in cellularity of spleen (p < 0.001), thymus (p < 0.001), bone marrow (p < 0.001) and circulating blood lymphocyte population (p < 0.001) was also recorded. ACR suppressed the humoral as well as cell mediated immunity as assessed by erythrocyte antibody complement (EAC)-rosettes (p < 0.001), hemagglutination titre (p < 0.001), PFC (p < 0.001) and the delayed type hypersensitivity response against sheep red blood cells (SRBC, p < 0.001). ACR treated immunosuppressed rats when treated with 6-MFA restored the circulating lymphocyte number to the normal level and a partial recovery in the weight of spleen and thymus. Potentiation of EAC-rosettes, hemagglutination titre, IgM-PFC and DTH response against SRBC was observed. It is concluded that 6-MFA ameliorate the ACR induced toxicity. This study may be of significance in prevention of ACR toxicity.

Abstract
Suppurative keratitis is an important preventable cause of blindness, particularly in the developing world. This study analyses 142 cases of suppurative keratitis referred to Chittagong Eye Infirmary Bangladesh. Some 53.5% of cases were bacterial and 35.9% were fungal. The five most common pathogens were: Pseudomonas sp. 24%, Streptococcus pneumoniae 17%, Aspergillus sp. 13%, Fusarium sp. 7% and Curvularia sp. 6%. Gram stain and culture results were consistent in 62.6% of cases. Previous antibiotic treatment was a significant factor for failure of culture isolation and less so for Gram stain failure. On Gram stain, 55.9% of pseudomonal cases were missed, but only 2% of fungal cases were missed. Over all, Gram stain had a sensitivity of 62% and positive predictive value of 84% for bacterial cases, and 98% and 94% for fungal cases, respectively. Fungal ulcers were typically filamentous, but an antecedent history of trauma was not common. The most frequent injury was due to rice grains, but the inoculum appeared to be introduced during eye washing with contaminated water. Pseudomonal ulcers occurred most frequently in the monsoon season, and Fusarium cases were seen only in the hot, dry season.

Abstract
The present study examines the mechanism of neurotoxic action of a synthetic pyrethroid formulation deltamethrin in young rats. Newly weaned Wistar Albino male rats received deltamethrin of technical grade at a dose of 7.0 mg/kg body weight/day in corn oil, orally from postnatal day 22 to postnatal day 37. Deltamethrin significantly decreased the wet weight of the hippocampus without much affecting the weight of cerebellum, pons medulla, hypothalamus, frontal cortex and corpus striatum in comparison to respective controls. A significant increase in the activities of mitochondrial monoamine oxidase and microsomal acetylcholinesterase without any effect on microsomal Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity was observed in the brain of experimental animals. Our results further indicate that deltamethrin markedly impaired learning function and significantly increased the spontaneous locomotor activity while aggressive behaviour remained unaffected. An overall enhancement of polyamine levels in hypothalamus and corpus striatum accompanied with an overall decline in pon medulla and cerebellum was also noted. Maximum decrease of spermine and spermidine was registered in hippocampus, while these polyamines showed an increase in frontal cortex. In striatal membranes the binding of 3H-spiperone decreased and 3H-quinuclidinyl benzilate was elevated significantly. Deltamethrin-induced deviations in regional brain polyamine levels may be a possible cause for altered pathophysiology of the neurone.

Abstract
The influence of 2 synthetic pyrethroid insecticide formulations, ie 10 mg fenvalerate/kg bw and 15 mg cypermethrin/kg bw, given during gestation and lactation periods to pregnant and nursing dams by gavage in corn oil on the morphological development and neurochemical indices was studied in neonatal rats. Exposed pups showed a significant increase in the levels of dopamine and muscarinic receptors of striatal membrane in both treatment groups. Alterations in these parameters were more marked in lactationally exposed pups. These pups also showed a significant decrease in the activity of brain monoamine oxidase and Na+, K(+)-ATPase and a significant increase in acetylcholinesterase from gestational exposure to fenvalerate. Significant decreases were observed during lactation in monoamine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase in fenvalerate-exposed pups and in acetylcholinesterase and Na+, K(+)-ATPase in cypermethrin-exposed pups. These results suggest disturbances in dopaminergic and cholinergic pathways which are more pronounced during the "growth spurt" period and may lead to a functional delay in brain maturation.

Abstract
Exposure to acrylamide (3-10 mg/kg body weight) was found to be lethal for protein-deficient pregnant rats as evidenced by their increased mortality. It had no such effect on the normal protein diet fed pregnant and nonpregnant rats and the protein-malnourished nonpregnant rats. Protein deficiency during pregnancy caused a significant decrease in the activity of brain monoamine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase and striatal [3H]spiperone binding, known to label dopamine receptors; had no significant effect on the binding of 3H-QNB (quinuclidinyl benzilate) to cerebellar and [3H]diazepam to frontocortical membranes, known to label muscarinic and benzodiazepine receptors, respectively; and had no significant effect on brain glutathione (GSH) levels in comparison with pregnant rats fed normal protein diet. Exposure to acrylamide (2 mg/kg body weight) in protein-malnourished pregnant rats caused a marked decrease in the activity of monoamine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase and also in the binding of [3H]spiperone, [3H]QNB, and [3H]diazepam to striatal, cerebellar, and frontocortical membranes, respectively. Kinetic studies revealed that decreased binding of these ligands in the specific brain regions were due to decreased receptor sites (Bmax). A reduction in the brain glutathione content was also observed in these animals in comparison with those fed a low-protein diet during pregnancy. Pregnant rats fed a normal-protein diet on acrylamide exposure, however, showed no such biochemical changes in comparison with the pregnant rats fed normal protein diet. Also, no effect on any of the parameters studied was observed in the adult nonpregnant rats fed a low-protein diet (for 18 d) and those exposed to the monomer (d 6-17) fed either a normal- or low-protein diet in comparison with respective controls. The results indicate that pregnancy under conditions of malnutrition modifies the susceptibility of pregnant rats toward acrylamide.

Abstract
Oral administration of a single dose of dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTL, 80 mg/kg body wt.), 2 or 24 h after treatment, caused no significant change in the levels of diacylglycerol and phosphoinositides in rat cerebrum (forebrain), whereas daily administration of DBTL (40 or 80 mg/kg body wt.) for 3 days (24 h after the final treatment) decreased the levels of diacylglycerol and phosphoinositides (phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate) in a concentration-dependent manner without influencing the levels of phosphatidylcholine in rat cerebrum. These studies indicate impairment of the phosphoinositide messenger system in rat cerebrum following repeated exposure to DBTL.

Abstract
The effect of systemic treatment of a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, fenvalerate (FV) was examined in adult female rats at different doses i.e. 5, 10, 20 mg/kg body weight by gavage for 21 consecutive days on regional brain levels of noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA), their acid metabolites: dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) by HPLC-EC system. Our results demonstrate pronounced inhibition of NA, DA, HVA & DOPAC levels in several brain regions which were neither dose related nor region specific.

Abstract
Influence of protein deficiency on the neurobehavioral toxicity of styrene during gestation and early infancy was studied in rats. Eye opening and fur growth were delayed in rat pups born to dams receiving a low protein diet. These pups also showed a delay in the development of surface and air righting reflexes and cliff avoidance response and a marginal increase in the levels of dopamine and serotonin receptors in comparison to those born to dams receiving a normal protein diet. Alterations in these parameters were more marked in pups born to dams exposed to styrene and receiving a low protein diet. In addition, these pups also showed a significant decrease in the activity of monoamine oxidase, Na+, K(+)-ATPase and succinic dehydrogenase as well as significant increases in motor activity and receptor sensitivity when compared to rat pups born to dams receiving a low protein diet. No significant alterations in behavioral and biochemical parameters were observed in the pups born to dams exposed to styrene and receiving a normal protein diet at this dose level. These results suggest that protein deficiency during early life renders the animals more susceptible to styrene.

Abstract
Administration of dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTL; 0, 20 or 40 mg/kg body wt.) by gavage to rats for 3 consecutive days produced a significant increase in polyamine levels in selected brain areas. At the higher dose of DBTL (40 mg/kg) spermidine levels were raised in pons-medulla, hypothalamus and frontal cortex while spermine levels increased in pons-medulla, hippocampus and frontal cortex regions. At the lower dose (20 mg/kg) only a slight increase in polyamine levels occurred. The observed induction in regional brain polyamines in DBTL-treated rats may lead to disturbances in synaptic function and further enhance its neurotoxic potential.

Abstract
A single i.p. administration of an immunomodulatory agent 6-MFA (a biological response modifier and antiviral agent of fungal origin, 10 mg/100g b.wt.), on 5th day of repeated acrylamide (ACR, 50 mg/kg b.wt.) treatment significantly protected rats against its specific neurotoxic effects. Corpus striatal 3H-spiperone binding elevated (24%) while glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity decreased (33%) in ACR group but values were markedly restored in 6-MFA alone and co-exposed group. Development of hind limb paralysis was also protected by 6-MFA. Results warrant the possible involvement of immune mechanisms and certain other factors such as lymphokines, hormones and microglia at the target site, which in turn facilitate the repair mechanism suggesting a therapeutic role of 6-MFA in clinical cases of toxic neuropathies in future.

Abstract
Pulmonary function parameters were examined in a Malay Muslim population during normal activity and Ramadan fasting conditions. The validity of employing various lung function prediction formulae for the subjects was also assessed. Present findings indicate that the water deprivation regime and resultant dehydration during Ramadan did not cause significant changes in ventilatory functions. Although pulmonary prediction formulae based on Caucasian and African populations were inapplicable to the subjects examined, the equations derived from the neighbouring populations in Singapore could be employed.

Abstract
A case of Dichotomophthoropsis nymphaearum, a dematiaceous hyphomycete, is described from Bangladesh. This species has not previously been reported as a human pathogen. Hyphae were observed in Gram stained corneal scrapings and the species was grown from cultured corneal material. Treatment with topical econazole and subconjunctival injections of miconazole was successful in the short term but long-term outcome could not be determined. The results of sensitivity tests for six antifungal drugs are reported for the isolate.

Abstract
Urine analysis was conducted on male Muslims before, during and after Ramadan. Various changes in urine volume, osmolality, total solute, sodium, potassium, titratable acidity and urea in response to altered feeding and activity regimens were found. There were no detectable levels of ketones, protein, glucose, urobilinogen and haemoglobin. It was concluded that the body adapted to fasting during Ramadan and that there were no adverse effects on renal function.

Abstract
The effect of alteration of eating pattern during Ramadan on body mass index (BMI), serum fructosamine: total protein ratio (F/TP), and glucose level in 18 healthy male Asiatic Moslems were studied. The results showed a significant decrease (p less than 0.025) in F/TP at the second week of Ramadan in 11 subjects who experienced continuous decrease in BMI throughout Ramadan. The remaining 7 subjects showed no significant changes in BMI and F/TP. No evidence of hypoglycaemia was observed in the subjects during the study. Serum fructosamine: total protein ratio in subjects with altered eating pattern preferably should be interpreted along with the change in body mass index.

Abstract
Protective effect of 6-MFA, an interferon inducer and antiviral agent of fungal origin, was investigated against the neurotoxic effects induced by acrylamide in rats. Animals of 6-MFA (2.5, 5, 10 mg/100 gm, i.p.) pretreated plus acrylamide (ACR) group exhibited a reduction in development of hind limb paralysis which was 34, 25 and 20 (%) with increasing doses of 6-MFA respectively. Corpus striatal dopamine binding was significantly raised in the ACR treated rats while 6-MFA (10 mg) plus ACR group showed no significant change, in comparison to respective controls. Increased binding in the 6-MFA (2.5, 5 mg) pretreated plus ACR group was also evident. Glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activity was markedly reduced (66%) in ACR alone rats while no change was noted in rats pretreated with either dose of 6-MFA alone. However, a significant reversal was noted in animals of 6-MFA plus ACR group in a dose related manner. Conservation of glutathione levels and involvement of microglia, gamma-interferon and other lymphokines has been suggested for the observed protective effect of 6-MFA against neurotoxicity of ACR.
