Abstract
There is growing concern regarding the lack of evidence on the effects bioplastics may have on natural ecosystems, whilst their production continues to increase as they are considered as a greener alternative to conventional plastics. Most research is limited to investigations of the response of individual taxa under laboratory conditions, with few experiments undertaken at the community or ecosystem scale, either investigating microplastics independently or in combination with other pollutants, such as nutrient enrichment. The aim of this study is to experimentally compare the effects of oil-based (high density polyethylene - HDPE) with those of bio-based biodegradable (polylactic acid - PLA) microplastics and their interaction with nutrient enrichment on freshwater macroinvertebrate communities under seminatural conditions. There were no significant differences in total abundance, alpha and beta diversities, or community composition attributable to the type of microplastics, their concentration, or nutrient enrichment compared with the control. However, there was a significant difference in macroinvertebrate alpha diversity between high concentrations of both microplastic types under ambient nutrient conditions, with lower diversity in communities exposed to HDPE compared with PLA. Nutrient enrichment mediated the effect of microplastic type, such that the diversity of macroinvertebrate communities exposed to HDPE were similar to those communities exposed to PLA. These findings suggest that the effects of microplastic pollution on macroinvertebrate communities are very weak at large-scale settings under seminatural conditions and that these effects might be mediated by the nutrient status of freshwater ecosystems. More research under large-scale, long-term, seminatural settings are needed in order to elucidate the impact of both conventional plastics and bioplastics on natural environments and their interactive effect with other occurring stressors and pollutants.

Abstract
Microplastics are now ubiquitous in freshwater environments. As most previous research has focused on species-specific effects of microplastics under controlled laboratory conditions, little is known about the impact of microplastics at higher levels of ecological organisation, such as freshwater communities and their associated ecosystem functions. To fill this knowledge gap, an outdoor experiment using 40 freshwater mesocosms, each 1.57 m3, was used to determine the effects of (i) microplastic type: traditional oil-based high-density polyethylene versus bio-based biodegradable polylactic acid, (ii) concentration of microplastic particles and (iii) nutrient enrichment. The two concentrations of microplastics used were equivalent to measured environmentally occurring concentrations and concentrations known to cause toxicological effects under laboratory conditions. Freshwater communities are also at increasing risk from nutrient enrichment, which can alter community composition in favour of competitively dominant taxa. The independent and interactive effects of these treatments on pelagic community structure (phytoplankton standing stock, taxonomic richness, and composition) and ecosystem functioning (periphyton productivity and leaf litter decomposition) were assessed. Taxonomic richness and community composition were not affected by exposure to the experimental treatments and there were no significant treatment effects on phytoplankton standing stock, periphyton productivity, total or microbial leaf litter decomposition. Overall, multiple microplastic exposures, crossed with nutrient addition had little impact on the structure and functioning of semi-natural freshwater ecosystems. These findings indicate that the negative impacts of microplastics predicted from species-specific studies may not be readily realised at the ecosystem scale.

Abstract
Bridging social capital is defined as the connections between individuals who are dissimilar with respect to socioeconomic status and other characteristics. We previously identified an important gap in the literature related to its measurement. We developed and validated a scale to measure bridging social capital to be used in Latinx immigrant populations living in the U.S using Classical Test Theory. The structure of the questionnaire comprised the following sub-scales: Socializing in the work place (5 items); Participation in community activities (16 items); Socializing in community activities (5 items); Contact with similar/different people (7 items); Assistance (17 items); Trust of institutions, corporations and other people (14 items); and Trust of intimate people (3 items). Although basic psychometric validation was performed on our original instrument (e.g., content and construct validity, internal consistency reliability), modern testing theory recommends a more comprehensive set of evaluations, including assessment of data quality, scaling assumptions, targeting, reliability, validity and responsiveness. Rasch measurement theory (RMT) is one of the Modern Test Theory methods that assesses the extent to which rigorous measurement is achieved. In the present work, our objective was to further evaluate the instrument using CTT and to use modern psychometric techniques to further validate the questionnaire and create version 2 (v2) using a new sample (N = 224). We developed a Rasch model of the questionnaire to evaluate item fit statistics, item category thresholds, person separation index (PSI), local dependency, differential item functioning (DIF), unidimensionality and targeting and item locations. Assistance was the most problematic sub-scale of all, as item-to-total correlations ranged from 0.27 to 0.66. There were no disordered thresholds on any item, either examined as part of the overall score or as part of sub-scales. However, the analysis provided evidence of the need to modify some of the sub-scales as there was lack of support for unidimensionality or fit to the Rasch model. The Bridging Social Capital Questionnaire v2 has 61 items (compared to 67 in version 1). Our questionnaire may be suitable for adaptation to other immigrant groups in different countries. The measurement of bridging social capital is crucial in underserved populations. It is crucial to use valid questionnaires to evaluate bridging social capital. The use of modern psychometric techniques to evaluate questionnaires is key. We present a validated questionnaire using the Rasch model.

Abstract
A series of alkyl aluminium complexes based on heteroscorpionate ligands were designed as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of cyclic esters and ring-opening copolymerisation of epoxides and anhydrides. Treatment of AlX3 (X = Me, Et) with ligands bpzbeH [bpzbe = 1,1-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-2-butoxide], bpzteH [bpzte = 2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1-para-tolylethoxide], and (R,R)-bpzmmH [(R,R)-bpzmm = (1R)-1-{(1R)-6,6-dimethyl-bicyclo[3.1.1]-2-hepten-2-yl}-2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)ethoxide] for 2 hours at 0 °C afforded the mononuclear dialkyl aluminium complexes [AlMe2{κ2-bpzbe}] (1), [AlEt2{κ2-bpzbe}] (2), [AlMe2{κ2-(R,R)-bpzmm}] (3) and [AlEt2{κ2-(R,R)-bpzmm}] (4), and the dinuclear dialkyl complexes [AlMe2{κ2-bpzte}]2 (5) and [AlEt2{κ2-bpzte}]2 (6). The molecular structures of the new complexes were determined by spectroscopic methods and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The alkyl-containing aluminium complexes can act as highly efficient single-component initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation of ε-caprolactone and l-lactide and for the ring-opening copolymerisation of cyclohexene oxide and phthalic anhydride to give a range of biodegradable polyesters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with cancer may experience change in what constitutes quality of life (QOL) over time as a result of the cancer progression (true change) or adaptation to the experience, considered as a response shift phenomenon. As individualized measures are ideally suited to explore response shift, this study aimed to estimate the extent to which reconceptualization response shift occurred over time in a cancer population and the impact of this response shift on estimates of change on QOL measures. METHODS Ninety-seven people with advanced cancer completed the study measures including the Patient-Generated Index (PGI) at diagnosis (T0) and 1 year later (T1). The response shift indicator was the change in the number of areas nominated (range - 4 to + 3). Multivariate linear regression was used to estimate the effect of changing areas on change in the PGI score, single indicators of global QOL, and the EQ-5Dindex adjusted for age and sex. RESULTS Approximately 72% of people in this sample either added or dropped areas over time. People who dropped more than two areas had higher PGI scores at T1 than T0 while people who added areas showed low PGI score. CONCLUSION The results are consistent with the PGI framework as areas nominated tend to focus on negative aspects of QOL.

Abstract
PURPOSE People with advanced cancer experience different sequelae which have unique effects on quality of life (QOL). The patient-generated index (PGI) is a personalized measure that allows patients to nominate, rate, and value areas that have the most impact on QOL. Fatigue, pain, and aspects of physical function are among the top 10 areas with QOL impact. An area of validation that is lacking for the PGI is the extent to which spontaneously nominated areas of QOL that patients are concerned with, agree with ratings obtained from standard patient reported outcomes (PROs). METHODS Data from 192 patients were used to compare ratings on fatigue, pain, and physical function obtained from PGI to those from standard outcome measures. RESULTS Within one severity rating, agreement ranged from 32.1 to 76.9 % within the fatigue domain, 34.2 to 95.24 % for pain, and between 84.2 and 94.7 % for physical function. Of the 10 items where the PGI had the highest agreement, 7 came from the RAND-36. At the domain level, people nominating an area scored in the more impaired range on standard measures than people who did not. CONCLUSION PGI gives comparable information as do standard measures. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER PGI provides important information to guide clinical care of the patient and also produces a legitimate total score suitable for research.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequencies of Neospora caninum horizontal and vertical transmissions in beef cow-calf operations under three different extensive management systems: group A: 0.75 head per hectare pasturing on natural grass; group B: 1.1 head per hectare on natural grass and improved cultured pastures; and group C: 2 head per hectare on natural grass, improved cultured pasture and whole corn silage. Serum samples from 72 multiparous cows assigned to each beef cow-calf operations were obtained every 3 months during 2 years. A group of 30 replacement heifers from each group were tested similarly since they were 10-21 months old. Twenty four, 20 and 34 calves from groups A, B and C respectively, were bled before colostrum intake and again 6 months later. The samples were analyzed by indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) for detection of total IgG against N. caninum at a serological titre ≥ 200 for multiparous cows and replacement heifers, and a serological titre ≥ 25 for calves. Serum samples from seropositive cows were assessed by ELISA to evaluate the avidity of their specific antibodies. There were no differences in the proportion of seropositive cows from groups A, B and C at the beginning of the trial (p>0.05). Interestingly, the lowest serological titres in seropositive cows from all groups were observed during the first trimester (p<0.05). Although seropositive cows had medium to high avidity antibodies, suggesting chronic infection; seroconversion associated with low antibody avidity was found in 2, 3 and 3 seropositive cows from groups A, B and C. All replacement heifers remained seronegative. No abortions were recorded but 2, 1, and 2 calves from groups A, B and C were seropositive before colostrum intake, respectively. Seropositive calves born from cows having intermediate or high avidity remained with the same serostatus at 6 months of age. Even under varying extensive management conditions, both N. caninum horizontal and vertical transmission methods do occur in beef cow-calf operations.

Abstract
A DFT computational mechanistic study of the ring closing metathesis (RCM) reaction of diallyl ether or N,N-diallyl-p-toluenesulfonamide catalyzed by a second generation Grubbs-type ruthenium carbene complex has been carried out. This study was performed at the PCM(CH2Cl2)-B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p)//B3LYP/SDD theory level. The aim of this work was to shed light on the influence that microwave irradiation has on these reactions and to gain insight into the so-called 'molecular radiator' effect. The outcomes obtained indicate that thermal effects induced by microwave irradiation decrease the catalytic induction period. The presence of a polar reagent and/or polar species in the reaction that increases the polarity of the medium may enhance this thermal effect.

Abstract
The synthesis and full characterization of the new aqua-complex [(η(6)-p-cymene)Ru(OH2)(κ(2)-N,N-2-pydaT)](BF4)2, [2](BF4)2, and the nucleobase derivative [(η(6)-p-cymene)Ru(9-MeG)(κ(2)-N,N-2-pydaT)](BF4)2, [4](PF6)2, where 2-pydaT = 2,4-diamino-6-(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine and 9-MeG = 9-methylguanine, are reported here. The crystal structures of both [4](PF6)2 and the chloro complex [(η(6)-p-cymene)RuCl(κ(2)-N,N-2-pydaT)](PF6), [1](PF6), have been elucidated by X-ray diffraction. The former provided relevant information regarding the interaction of the metallic fragment [(η(6)-p-cymene)Ru(κ(2)-N,N-2-pydaT)](2+) and a simple model of DNA. NMR and kinetic absorbance studies have proven that the aqua-complex [2](BF4)2 binds to the N7 site of guanine in nucleobases, nucleotides, or DNA. A stable bifunctional interaction (covalent and partially intercalated) between the [(η(6)-p-cymene)Ru(κ(2)-N,N-2-pydaT)](2+) fragment and CT-DNA has been corroborated by kinetic, circular dichroism, viscometry, and thermal denaturation experiments. The reaction mechanism entails the very fast formation of the Ru-O-(PO3) linkage prior to the fast intercalation of the 2-pydaT fragment. Then, a Ru-N7-(G) covalent bond is formed at the expense of the Ru-O-(PO3) bond, yielding a bifunctional complex. The dissociation rate of the intercalated fragment is slow, and this confers additional interest to [2](BF4)2 in view of the likely correlation between slow dissociation and biological activity, on the assumption that DNA is the only biotarget. Furthermore, [2](BF4)2 displays notable pH-dependent cytotoxic activity in human ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780, IC50 = 11.0 μM at pH = 7.4; IC50 = 6.58 μM at pH = 6.5). What is more, complex [2](BF4)2 is not cross-resistant with cisplatin, exhibiting a resistance factor, RF(A2780cis), of 0.28, and it shows moderate selectivity toward the cancer cell lines, in particular, A2780cis (IC50 = 3.0 5 ± 0.08 μM), relative to human lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5; IC50 = 24 μM), the model for healthy cells.

Abstract
Background: The definition of health for people with cancer is not focused solely on the physiology
of illness and the length of life remaining, but is also concerned with improving the
well-being and the quality of the life (QOL) remaining to be lived. This study aimed to
identify the constructs most associated with QOL in people with advanced cancer. Methods: Two hundred three persons with recent diagnoses of different advanced cancers were
evaluated with 65 variables representing individual and environmental factors,
biological factors, symptoms, function, general health perceptions and overall QOL at
diagnosis. Three independent stepwise multiple linear regressions identified the most
important contributors to overall QOL. R2 ranking and
effect sizes were estimated and averaged by construct. Results: The most important contributor of overall QOL for people recently diagnosed with
advanced cancer was social support. It was followed by general health perceptions,
energy, social function, psychological function and physical function. Conclusions: We used effect sizes to summarise multiple multivariate linear regressions for a more
manageable and clinically interpretable picture. The findings emphasise the importance
of incorporating the assessment and treatment of relevant symptoms, functions and social
support in people recently diagnosed with advanced cancer as part of their clinical
care.

Abstract
Resistin and adiponectin are adipokines with postulated opposite functions. Resistin has been related with insulin resistance in obesity, while adiponectin could be associated to higher insulin sensitivity. We have determined whether the production of these two adipokines during the day is related to the feeding rhythm in rats. Resistin mRNA levels in adipose tissue correlated positively with the gastric contents and serum insulin concentration, showing higher levels during the dark phase (period of the highest food intake), especially in the mesenteric depot, while levels decreased during the light phase. The diurnal pattern of resistin expression was not directly reflected in the circulating levels, but it showed a 6-h delay and correlated negatively with the gastric contents and serum insulin. Adiponectin expression followed an opposite pattern, not apparently related to feeding or insulin release, and not translated into changes in circulating levels. Moreover, considering that insulin stimulates resistin expression and that circulating resistin follows a contrary circadian pattern in comparison to insulin, resistin, apart from its role in the increased insulin resistance associated to obesity, could also act as a putative modulator of insulin in the daily feeding/fasting rhythm through a negative feedback regulation of its action.

Abstract
Obesity is a multifactorial disorder affected by multiple genetic and environmental factors, in particular nutrients, and their interrelationships. Increasing knowledge of the genes and molecules involved in the development of obesity is paving the way for new methods of obesity control. In this sense, Nutrigenomics--which represents a new approach in nutrition research that joints the application of powerful functional genomics technologies, bioinformatics and molecular biology with more traditional methodologies--may orientate the design and development of new functional foods for obesity, based on the scientific knowledge of the impact of specific nutrients on the mammalian body weight control system and their mechanisms of action.

In this sense, most studies on this topic have been carried out using male subjects, although different works with males and females have shown important sex-associated differences in the regulation of these proteins; for instance, sex differences have been shown in the cold-, diet- and overweight-induced expression of brown adipose tissue UCP1 and also in the correlation of muscle UCP3 with overweight. In these kinds of studies, models of obesity such as cafeteria diet feeding and postcafeteria have been very useful. Moreover, sex hormones have been shown to modulate UCP1 expression in brown adipocytes in vitro. All these sex-dependent differences, as well as sex differences in body weight gain under a hypercaloric diet, could be related to the different respective biological functions of males and females, taking into account the fact that the gender effect in future studies on obesity could be of interest.

The reaction of [Ti(NR)Cl(2)(py)(3)](R = (t)Bu, p-tolyl, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)) with [{Li(bdmpza)(H(2)O)}(4)][bdmpza = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate] and [{Li(bdmpzdta)(H(2)O)}(4)][bdmpzdta = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetate] affords the corresponding complexes [Ti(NR)Cl(kappa(3)-bdmpzx)(py)](x = a, R = (t)Bu 1, p-tolyl 2, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) 3; x = dta, R =(t)Bu 4, p-tolyl , 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) 6), which are the first examples of imido Group 4 complexes stabilized by heteroscorpionate ligands. The solid-state X-ray crystal structure of 1 has been determined. The titanium centre is six-coordinate with three fac-sites occupied by the heteroscorpionate ligand and the remainder of the coordination sphere being completed by chloride, imido and pyridine ligands. The complexes are 1-6 fluxional at room temperature. The pyridine ortho- and meta-proton resonances show evidence of dynamic behaviour for this ligand and variable-temperature NMR studies were carried out in order to study their dynamic behaviour in solution. The complexes [Nb(NR)Cl(3)(py)(2)](R = (t)Bu, p-tolyl, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)) reacted with [{Li(bdmpza)(H(2)O)}(4)] and (Hbdmpze)[bdmpze = 2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)ethoxide], the latter with prior addition of (n)BuLi, to give the complexes [Nb(NR)Cl(2)(kappa(3)-bdmpzx)](x = a, R =(t)Bu 7, p-tolyl 8, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) 9; x = e, R = (t)Bu 10, p-tolyl 11, 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)) 12 and these are the first examples of imido Group 5 complexes with heteroscorpionate ligands. The structures of these complexes have been determined by spectroscopic methods.

Abstract
The preparation of new "scorpionate" ligands in the form of the lithium derivatives [(Li(bdmpzdta)(H(2)O))(4)] (1) [bdmpzdta = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetate], [Li(bdphpza)(H(2)O)(THF)] (2) [bdphpza = bis(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate], and [Li(bdphpzdta)(H(2)O)(THF)] (3) [bdphpzdta = bis(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl)dithioacetate] has been carried out. Furthermore, a series of titanium complexes has been prepared by reaction of TiCl(4)(THF)(2) with the lithium reagents [(Li(bdmpza)(H(2)O))(4)] (4) [bdmpza = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate] and 1. Under the appropriate experimental conditions neutral complexes, namely [TiCl(3)(kappa(3)-bdmpza)] (5), [TiCl(3)(kappa(3)-bdmpzdta)] (6), and [TiCl(2)(kappa(2)-bdmpzdta)(2)] (7), and cationic complexes, namely [TiCl(2)(THF)(kappa(3)-bdmpza)]Cl (8) and [TiCl(2)(THF)(kappa(3)-bdmpzdta)]Cl (9), were isolated. Complexes 8 and 9 undergo an interesting nucleophilic THF ring-opening reaction to give the corresponding alkoxide-containing species [TiCl(2)(kappa(3)-bdmpza)(O(CH(2))(4)Cl)] (10) and [TiCl(2)(kappa(3)-bdmpzdta)(O(CH(2))(4)Cl)] (11). A family of alkoxide-containing complexes of general formulas [TiCl(2)(kappa(3)-bdmpza)(OR)] [R = Me (12); R = Et (14); R = (i)Pr (16); R = (t)Bu (18)] and [TiCl(2)(kappa(3)-bdmpzdta)(OR)] [R = Me (13); R = Et (15); R = (i)Pr (17)] was also prepared. The structures of these complexes have been determined by spectroscopic methods, and in addition, the X-ray crystal structures of 3, 7, 10, and 11 were also established.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the sex-dependent differences in the response of key parameters involved in thermogenesis and control of body weight in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT) in postcafeteria-fed rats, a model of dietary obesity. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES BAT and WAT were obtained from male and female control and postcafeteria-fed Wistar rats. Postcafeteria-fed rats were initially fed with cafeteria diet from day 10 of life until day 110 (cafeteria period) and with standard chow diet from then until day 180 of life (postcafeteria period). Body mass and energy intake were evaluated. Biometric parameters were analyzed in interscapular BAT (IBAT). Levels of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), alpha(2)-adrenergic receptor (AR), and beta(3)-AR proteins and UCP1, UCP2, UCP3, beta(3)-AR, and leptin mRNAs, in IBAT or WAT, were studied by Western blot and Northern blot analyses, respectively. RESULTS Rats attained 59% (females) and 39% (males) increase in body weight at the end of the cafeteria period. During the postcafeteria period, the rats showed a loss of body weight, which was higher in females. Postcafeteria-fed female rats also presented higher activation of thermogenic parameters in IBAT, including UCP1, UCP2, and UCP3 mRNAs. Female control rats showed lower levels of both alpha 2 and beta(3)-ARs in BAT compared with male rats, but these levels in postcafeteria-fed female and male rats were the same, because males tended to down-regulate them. Levels of leptin mRNA in response to the postcafeteria state depended on gender and the specific WAT depot studied. DISCUSSION It is suggested that in postcafeteria-fed female rats, BAT thermogenic capacity becomes more efficiently activated than in males. Female rats also showed a bigger weight loss. The parallel regulation of the levels of UCP2 and UCP3 mRNAs, with respect to UCP1 mRNA, with higher activation in female postcafeteria-fed rats, suggests a possible role of both UCP2 and UCP3 in the regulation of energy expenditure and in the control of body weight. The distinct responses to overweight of alpha 2 and beta(3)-ARs--which were sex dependent--and leptin mRNA--which depended on both sex and WAT depot--also support the different response of thermogenesis-related parameters between overweight males and females.

Here we report the synthesis, in vitro antifungal evaluation and SAR study of 41 chalcones and analogues. In addition, all active structures were tested for their capacity of inhibiting Saccharomyces cerevisiae beta(1,3)-glucan synthase and chitin synthase, enzymes that catalyze the synthesis of the major polymers of the fungal cell wall.

Abstract
This immunocytochemical study evaluates the presence of IgG1-4, IgA and IgE immunoglobulins in active lesions of 25 localized cutaneous leishmaniasis patients from three bioclimatic areas (Awa, Afa and Bsha) in Mérida State, Venezuela. All immunoglobulin isotypes except IgE were detected, with variable intensity, in one or more of the epidermal or dermal components of skin lesions. IgG1 and IgG2 were detected significantly more frequently than IgG3, IgG4 and IgA. The ranking of the isotypes according to frequency of detection was the same in all areas: IgG1 = IgG2 > IgG3 = IgG4 = IgA, but considered as whole, all isotypes were detected significantly more frequently in patients from the Awa area than in those from the Bsha area. The predominant expression of isotypes IgG1 and IgG2 suggests a preferential Th1 like immune response. Anti-Leishmania immunoserum stained only parasites and their debris, suggesting that most of the immunostaining was nonspecific.

Abstract
Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) overexpression has been shown to reverse the malignant phenotype in a variety of tumor cell lines. The inhibition of proliferation and reversal of the malignant phenotype has been attributed to an increase in H(2)O(2) production as a result of the dismutation reaction. However, direct evidence in support of this hypothesis has not been forthcoming. To evaluate the contribution of H(2)O(2) in the regulation of cell growth in response to MnSOD overexpression, control and MnSOD-overexpressing HT-1080 fibrosarcoma cells were transfected with constructs that direct catalase to either the mitochondrial or cytosolic compartments. Overexpression of catalase in either compartment reversed the proliferative and clonogenic inhibition associated with MnSOD overexpression, blocked the increase in the steady state levels of H(2)O(2) as measured by flow cytometric analysis of 2', 7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate, and increased protection from the cytotoxicity of H(2)O(2). In addition, mitochondrial or cytosolic catalase enhances respiration through complex I and II in both control and MnSOD overexpressing cell lines and reverses a MnSOD-dependent decrease in net ATP production. Thus, catalase reverses the proliferative inhibition associated with MnSOD overexpression and may also play an important role in metabolic regulation.

Abstract
The ligands 4,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrimidine (bpzpm) and 4,6-bis(4-methylpyrazol-1-yl)pyrimidine (Me-bpzpm) were synthesized and their reactions with some palladium derivatives explored. Mononuclear or dinuclear neutral or cationic complexes were obtained by reaction of the ligands with 1 or 2 equiv of Pd(C6XF4)2(cod) (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; X = F, H) or the palladium fragment [Pd(eta 3-2-Me-C3H4)(S)2]+ (S = acetone). The reaction of the dinuclear derivatives with 1 equiv of the respective free ligand immediately led to the regeneration of the mononuclear complexes. Except in the case of the synthesis of [[Pd(C6HF4)2][Pd(C6F5)2](bpzpm)], where two similar metallic groups are present, all attempts to obtain dinuclear asymmetric complexes with two different palladium fragments failed. Instead, the dinuclear symmetric complexes were formed. This result could be considered as an example of molecular recognition with the ligand acting as a ditopic receptor. This behavior is comparable to chemical symbiosis but in this case applied to the ligand rather than to the metal center as occurs normally. The polyfluorophenyl rings are situated on average in a perpendicular orientation with respect to the coordination plane. Their restricted rotation results in several atropoisomers for the complexes with m-C6HF4. Different cross-reaction experiments were carried out, and these showed the mobility of the metallic fragments, with the more difficult process being that involving the more strongly bonded polyfluorophenyl palladium groups. By means of 1H NMR variable temperature studies, the interconversion of the two isomers of [[Pd(eta 3-C4H7)]2-(bpzpm)]Tf2 (Tf = CF3SO3) was analyzed. In the case of [[Pd(eta 3-C4H7)](bpzpm)]Tf the existence of two processes, an intramolecular apparent allyl rotation and an intermolecular exchange of the allylpalladium fragments, has been demonstrated. Different delta Gc++ values at the coalescence temperatures have also been determined. An X-ray single-crystal analysis was carried out on [[Pd(eta 3-C4H7)]2(bpzpm)]Tf2, which crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group I2/m, with a = 9.368(2), b = 16.191(3), c = 20.228(6) A, beta = 101.26(3), and Z = 4. Compound [[Pd(C6HF4)2](bpzpm)] crystallized in the triclinic system, space group P1, with a = 8.845(6), b = 12.6609(9), c = 12.826(3) A, alpha = 88.45(2), beta = 74.36(3), gamma = 89.32(2), and Z = 2.

Abstract
Thirty-four arylpropanoids and related compounds were evaluated in vitro for antifungal properties. Among them, 22 phenyl-, 4 naphthyl-, and 4 phenanthrylpropanoids; naphthalene; phenanthrene; and 2-chloro-1-hexyl-1-propanone were tested against dermatophytes by the agar dilution method. alpha-Halopropiophenones exhibited a broad spectrum of activities against Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, and Epidermophyton floccosum, with MIC values between 0.5 and >50 microg/mL. Keto, alcohol, and alpha-haloketo propyl derivatives of naphthalene and phenanthrene also showed very good activity against all dermatophytes tested, clearly showing that in these series, a halogen atom is not necessary for activity. Phenanthryl derivatives were more active (MICs, 3-20 microg/mL) than naphthyl ones (MICs, 3-50 microg/mL). A structure-activity relationship study was carried out and aided in establishing the structural requirements of arylpropanoids for antifungal activities. Because dermatophytes are a group of fungi that characteristically infect the keratinized areas of the body, these new series of antifungal compounds open the possibility of discovering new topical antifungal drugs for the treatment of dermatomycoses, which are frequently very difficult to eradicate.

Abstract
During recent years, distraction osteogenesis has gained in popularity for the treatment of various bone deficiencies either in the vertical, transverse, or anteroposterior dimension. Distraction osteogenesis has been shown to be an effective technique for mandibular widening and lengthening where traditional orthognathic surgery has important limitations. The intraoral approach to these procedures prevents damage to the inferior alveolar nerve and the developing dental follicles, and eliminates hypertrophic facial scars. Intraoral distraction osteogenesis also avoids donor-site morbidity, and minimizes the need for blood transfusion or prolonged fixation. This intraoral application provides for enhanced patient acceptance and reduces the potentially negative psychosocial effects of wearing an extraoral distraction appliance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A prospective sequential study on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and three techniques of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) was conducted to assess peritoneal clearances, the influence of peritoneal permeability on nocturnal APD clearances and the suitability of the peritoneal equilibration test (PET) for predicting clearances on APD. METHODS After performing a PET, a series of clinical, biochemical and dialysis adequacy markers were evaluated after 2 months on CAPD, continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) and tidal volume peritoneal dialysis (TPD) with 50% and 25% tidal volumes. Forty five patients participated and 33 completed the study. RESULTS Serum urea and creatinine decreased significantly whereas haemoglobin and glucose increased. Mean peritoneal urea clearance (1/week) was 55.40+/-8.76 on CAPD, 74.82+/-12.62 on CCPD, 69.20+/-14.63 on TPD (tidal 50%) and 66.89+/-13.23 on TPD (tidal 25%); mean creatinine clearance (1/week/1.73 m2) was 42.80 +/- 9.95, 52.19 +/- 11.11, 51.31 +/- 13.3 and 49.17 +/- 11.83, respectively. Both clearances were significantly lower on CAPD than on APD (P<0.001). CCPD was the automated technique that provided the best nocturnal urea clearance (P<0.01). Nocturnal creatinine clearance did not show significant differences between CCPD and TPD (tidal 50%), being better with both techniques than with TPD (tidal 25%). There were statistically significant differences between nocturnal dialysate to plasma (D/P) ratios and those corresponding to the nearest times in the PET. The urea D/P ratio at 180 min and the creatinine D/P ratio at 240 min of the PET were the parameters that better estimated nocturnal clearances on APD. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms that TPD does not improve the results of CCPD. Significant differences between D/P ratios during actual nocturnal cycles and PETs were observed.

Abstract
In previous reports we attributed the cytoprotective activity of several sesquiterpene lactones to the presence of a nonhindered electrophilic acceptor in their structure. We suggested that the mechanism of protection would be, at least in part, mediated through a reaction between the electrophilic acceptor and the sulfhydryl-containing groups of the mucosa. We report here the gastric cytoprotective effect of simple molecules containing an alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl group. In the present paper, we undertake the study of molecular accessibility and molecular shape, in addition to conformational, electronic, and steric factors. Our results helped to establish two important facts connecting chemical structure with cytoprotective effect. Firstly, an adequate molecular accessibility appears to be necessary to produce the biological response, and secondly, the alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl system has to be included in a cyclic structure or, at least, in the proximity of a cyclic system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the cases of AIDS detected in a Barcelona prison. DESIGN A prospective study. SETTING A penitentiary for men in Barcelona. PATIENTS All those inmates who had AIDS or were diagnosed with the illness during their stay in prison during the 36 months between 1/1/1991 and 31/12/93. RESULTS 220 cases of AIDS (91.7% PVDA), 60% of which were diagnosed in prison. The PVDA were younger (p < 0.0001). There were a greater number of Spaniards among the UDVP (p < 0.01) and among those with tattoos (p < 0.001). The first manifestation of the disease in 53% of the cases was extrapulmonary Tuberculosis. CONCLUSIONS Prisons are key places in the prevention and monitoring of HIV infection. The use of care programmes, including maintenance programmes using Methadone, for drug-dependent patients are recommended. The continuation of programmes tracking Tuberculosis, the main illness related to HIV infection in prison, is also recommended.

Abstract
A 3.2 kb Sstl-Sphl DNA fragment of Streptomyces antibioticus, an oleandomycin producer, conferring resistance to oleandomycin was sequenced and found to contain an open reading frame of 1710 bp (oleB). Its deduced gene product (OleB) showed a high degree of similarity with other proteins belonging to the ABC-transporter superfamily including the gene product of another oleandomycin-resistance gene (OleC). The OleB protein contains two ATP-binding domains, each of approximately 200 amino acids in length, and no hydrophobic transmembrane regions. Functional analysis of the oleB gene was carried out by deleting specific regions of the gene and assaying for oleandomycin resistance. These experiments showed that either the first or the second half of the gene containing only one ATP-binding domain was sufficient to confer resistance to oleandomycin. The gene oleB was expressed in Escherichia coli fused to a maltose-binding protein (MBP) using the pMal-c2 vector. The MBP-OleB hybrid protein was purified by affinity chromatography on an amylose resin and polyclonal antibodies were raised against the fusion protein. These were used to monitor the biosynthesis and physical location of OleB during growth. By Western analysis, the OleB protein was detected both in the soluble and in the membrane fraction and its synthesis paralleled oleandomycin biosynthesis. It was also shown that a Streptomyces albus strain, containing both a glycosyltransferase (OleD) able to inactivate oleandomycin and the OleB protein, was capable of glycosylating oleandomycin and secreting the inactive glycosylated molecule. It is proposed that OleB constitutes the secretion system by which oleandomycin or its inactive glycosylated form could be secreted by S. antibioticus.

Abstract
Resistance to macrolides in producing organisms can be achieved by target site modification, intracellular inactivation of the antibiotic or active efflux mechanisms for the excretion of the antibiotic. The oleandomycin producer, Streptomyces antibioticus, possesses oleandomycin-sensitive ribosomes all along the cell cycle. However, it contains an intracellular glycosyltransferase capable of inactivating oleandomycin in the presence of UDP-glucose as cofactor. The correspondent gene (oleD) has been cloned and sequenced and the glycosyltransferase purified. Two other genes (oleB and oleC) that confer oleandomycin resistance have been cloned and characterized and both encode ABC (ATP-Binding Cassette) transporters. These may constitute the excretion mechanism throughout which the glycosylated oleandomycin is excreted. A second enzyme activity has been purified from culture supernatants of the oleandomycin producer that releases the glucose from the inactive glycosylated oleandomycin generating active antibiotic. This enzyme would probably catalyse the last step in the biosynthesis of oleandomycin.

Abstract
A gene (ORFB) from Streptomyces antibioticus (an oleandomycin producer) encoding a large, multifunctional polyketide synthase (PKS) was cloned and sequenced. Its product shows an internal duplication and a close similarity to the third subunit of the PKS involved in erythromycin biosynthesis by Saccharopolyspora erythraea, showing the equivalent nine active site domains in the same order along the polypeptide. An unusual feature of this ORF is the GC content of most of the sequence, which is surprisingly low, for a Streptomyces gene; the large number of codons with T in the third position is particularly striking. The last 800 bp of the gene stand out as being normal in their GC content, this region corresponding almost exactly to the thioesterase domain of the gene and suggesting that this domain was a late addition to the PKS. Based on the high degree of similarity between the ORFB product and the third subunit of the erythromycin PKS and the occurrence nearby of a gene conferring oleandomycin resistance, it is possible that this gene might be involved in the biosynthesis of the oleandomycin lactone ring.

Abstract
The effect of intravenous infusion of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) 27, a novel regulatory peptide that shows a close structural and chemical similarity to vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), on the rat exocrine pancreatic secretion was studied. PACAP and VIP stimulated the flow rate of exocrine pancreatic secretion (p < 0.05). However, protein output and amylase secretion were mainly stimulated by PACAP. Intravenous infusion of VIP increased the plasma levels of secretin (p < 0.05). On the other hand, PACAP released neither secretin nor VIP. Our results show: (a) both PACAP and VIP stimulate exocrine pancreatic secretion, (b) PACAP stimulation of pancreatic amylase and protein secretion is greater than that induced by VIP, and (c) PACAP probably exerts a direct effect on exocrine pancreas whereas some of the actions of VIP might be mediated by secretin.

Abstract
Three different DNA fragments of an oleandomycin producer, Streptomyces antibioticus, conferring oleandomycin resistance were cloned in plasmid pIJ702 and expressed in Streptomyces lividans and in Streptomyces albus. These oleandomycin resistance determinants were designated as oleA (pOR400), oleB (pOR501) and oleC (pOR800). oleA and oleC are closely linked in the chromosome as they were both obtained together in two cosmid clones that were isolated from a genomic library. Sequencing of the oleC resistance determinant revealed four complete open reading frames (ORFs) and the C-terminal end of a fifth. The functions of orf1 and orf2 are unknown since they did not show significant similarity with other sequences in the data bases. The orf3 gene product has similarity with some proteins involved in iron and vitamin B12 uptake in bacteria. The orf4 gene product had a hydrophilic profile and showed important similarity with proteins containing typical ATP-binding domains characteristic of the ABC-transporter superfamily and involved in membrane transport and, particularly, with several genes conferring resistance to various macrolide antibiotics and anticancer drugs. The last gene, orf5, is translationally coupled to orf4 and codes for a hydrophobic polypeptide containing several transmembrane domains characteristic of integral membrane proteins. Subcloning and deletion experiments limited the resistance determinant to a 0.9 kb PstI-SphI fragment and only orf4 is included in this fragment. These results suggest that resistance to oleandomycin conferred by oleC (orf4) is probably due to an efflux transport system of the ABC-transporter superfamily.

Abstract
The long-term effects of meglumine antimoniate (chemotherapy) or exposure to an environmental temperature of 37 degrees C (thermotherapy) on the evolution of Leishmania mexicana infections and on the response to challenge infections six months after treatment were compared in susceptible (BALB/c) and partially resistant (C57BL/6) mice. Thermotherapy was better than chemotherapy in that it healed lesions quicker and prevented relapses in the partially resistant mice during the observation period. However, both treatments appeared equally effective in terms of clinical cure. Neither treatment cleared all parasites from the hosts and both impaired the hosts' immune response to a challenge infection. The results indicate that specific immunity fades with time post-infection and that the persistence of the parasite in a clinically cured host does not maintain protective immunity against challenge infections.

Abstract
The structural requirements for the gastric cytoprotective activity of several sesquiterpene lactones are reported. A theoretical-experimental study on the potentially active centers is carried out. The biological evaluation of reduced analogues and the simulation of the molecular interactions between these compounds and an endogenous cysteine residue suggest that the presence of a non sterically hindered Michael acceptor seems to be an essential structural requirement for the cytoprotective activity in this family of compounds. This observation suggests that cytoprotection is mediated through a Michael reaction between the sulfhydryl-containing peptides of the mucosa and Michael acceptors present in the molecules under study. This mechanism of action is in addition to and distinct from the one proposed in our previous paper, namely, that these sesquiterpenes stimulate endogenous synthesis of prostaglandins.

Abstract
The persistence of parasites in mice cured of Leishmania mexicana infection was investigated by using immunosuppressive drugs and checking for the reappearance of lesions. BALB/c (susceptible) and C57BL/6 (partially resistant) mice infected with 10(4) amastigotes were treated with either thermotherapy or meglumine antimonate and subsequently immunosuppressed with either cyclophosphamide or hydrocortisone. Immunosuppression by either method caused lesions to reappear in both strains of mice regardless of the treatment used to produce clinical cure. In both strains of mice the proportion of animals developing lesions after immunosuppression was greater in the mice cured by the drug. The relevance of these findings to human therapy is discussed.

Abstract
The clinical and anatomic findings of 7 patients with aortic atresia were studied. All cases had usual atrial arrangement, atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial concordance. All but one had an intact ventricular septum. All cases presented a hypoplastic left ventricle, and in one, a mitral atresia was found. The clinical diagnosis was made by means of cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography. The presence of a patent ductus arteriosus, the size of the atrial and ventricular septal defects, the diameter of the ascending aorta, pulmonary vascular resistances and right ventricular function are all factors that influence the survival in the patients with aortic atresia.

Abstract
Under experimental conditions, the course of the infection and the response to the reinfection by Trypanosoma rangeli in mice and Didelphis marsupialis, are studied. During the initial infection the mice show a relatively low parasitaemia and a short patent period. A scanty parasitaemia level of four days length, was observed following the first reinfection, being the mice resistant to new reinfections by T. rangeli. In opossums a lower parasitaemia and a longer patent period than that detected in mice, were observed during the initial infection. The response to reinfections in this mammal, was similar to that observed in mice. After reinfection with T. rangeli, haemagglutinant antibodies in immune-sera of both mice and opossums, were detected. The possible immune-response at the site of deposition against the metacyclic-forms of T. rangeli, and the action of circulating antibodies against the blood forms of the parasite, are speculated to explain the resistance of mice and opossums to the reinfection by T. rangeli.
