Unveiling microplastics pollution in a subtropical rural recreational lake: A novel insight

While global attention has been primarily focused on the occurrence and persistence of microplastics (MP) in urban lakes, relatively little attention has been paid to the problem of MP pollution in rural recreational lakes. This pioneering study aims to shed light on MP size, composition, abundance, spatial distribution, and contributing factors in a rural recreational lake, 'Nikli Lake' in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh. Using density separation, MPs were extracted from 30 water and 30 sediment samples taken from ten different locations in the lake. Subsequent characterization was carried out using a combination of techniques, including a stereomicroscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results showed a significant prevalence of MPs in all samples, with an average amount of 109.667 ± 10.892 pieces/kg3 (dw) in the sediment and 98.167 ± 12.849 pieces/m3 in the water. Small MPs (<0.5 mm), fragments and transparent colored particles formed the majority, accounting for 80.2%, 64.5% and 55.3% in water and 78.9%, 66.4% and 64.3% in sediment, respectively. In line with global trends, polypropylene (PP) (53%) and polyethylene (PE) (43%) emerged as the predominant polymers within the MPs. MP contents in water and sediment showed positive correlations with outflow, while they correlated negatively with inflow and lake depth (p > 0.05). Local activities such as the discharge of domestic sewage, fishing waste and agricultural runoff significantly influence the distribution of polypropylene. Assessment of pollution factor, pollution risk index and pollution load index values at the sampling sites confirmed the presence of MPs, with values above 1. This study is a baseline database that provides a comprehensive understanding of MP pollution in the freshwater ecosystem of Bangladesh, particularly in a rural recreational lake. A crucial next step is to explore ecotoxicological mechanisms, legislative measures and future research challenges triggered by MP pollution.

Ultrasensitive detection of chloramphenicol in water using functionalized polymers with an aluminium organic framework

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are extensively used as electrode material in various sensing applications due to their efficacious porous nature and tunable properties. However, pristine MOFs lack conductive attributes that hinder their wide usage in electrochemical applications. Electropolymerization of several aromatic monomers has been a widely used strategy for preparing conducting electrode materials for various sensing applications in the past decades. Herein, we report a similar approach by employing the electropolymerization method to create a functional polymer layer to enhance the sensitivity of an Aluminium Organic Framework (DUT-4) for the selective detection of Chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic in aqueous environment. The combined strategy using the conducting polymer layer with the porous Al MOF provides surpassing electrochemical performance for sensing CAP with regard to the very low detection limit (LOD = 39 nM) and exceptionally high sensitivity (11943 μA mM-1 cm-2). In addition, the fabricated sensor exhibited good selectivity, reproducibility and stability. The developed method was successfully evaluated in various real samples including lake water and river water for CAP detection with good recovery percentages even at lower concentrations.

Centurial deposition records of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in sediment cores from a plateau deep-water lake of China: Significance of anthropogenic impacts, transformation signals and ecological risks revealed by full congener analysis

Lake Fuxian, the largest deep freshwater lake in China, has been suffering from increasing ecological and environmental issues along with the rapid urbanization and industrialization in the past 40 years. To better understand the historical pollution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Lake Fuxian, comprehensive analyses of 209 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were conducted in two intact sediment cores (Core V1 and Core V2). The total mass concentrations of PCBs ranged from 7.60 to 31.47 ng/g (dry weight basis) and 5.55 to 28.90 ng/g during the period of 1908-2019 in Core V1 and 1924-2019 in Core V2, respectively. PCBs exhibited a consecutive increasing trend from 1940s to 2019 in Core V1. The temporal trend of PCBs in Core V2 basically matched to the history of PCB usage and prohibition in China (increasing from 1940s to mid-1960s, a remarkable drop in mid-1970s, and then increasing until 2019). Moreover, low-chlorinated PCBs were dominant among PCB homologues. Mono-CBs, di-CBs, tri-CBs and tetra-CBs accounted for 86.71 %-98.57 % in sediment segments. The PCB sources included unintentional emission and atmospheric deposition, as well as biological transformation. The total mass concentrations of OCPs ranged from 0.74 to 3.82 ng/g in Core V1 and 0.35 to 2.23 ng/g in Core V2, respectively. Similar trend was observed in the two sediment cores with peaks in the early 1990s. The predominant OCPs were γ-hexachlorohexane (γ-HCHs), dieldrin and p,p'-DDD. The ecological risks posed by PCBs and p-p'-DDD in Lake Fuxian were relatively low. In contrast, dieldrin might pose a potential threat to exposed organisms and apparently adverse ecological effects were caused by γ-HCH. This study will provide important baseline information on historical POPs contamination of Lake Fuxian.

An indispensable role of overlying water in nitrogen removal in shallow lakes

The nitrogen (N) removal characteristics in water columns and sediments of shallow lakes, influenced by various factors, may exhibit spatial variations in lakes with algal-macrophyte dominance. The N removal rates in water columns and sediments of Lake Taihu were investigated. Our findings indicated that the total N removal rates in Lake Taihu followed the order of algae-dominance > macrophyte-dominance > pelagic lake (without the presence of algae and macrophytes). Correlation analysis revealed that the key environmental factors affecting denitrification and anammox in sediments of algae/macrophyte-type lakes were nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2--N), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and chlorophyll a (Chl-a). The linear regression demonstrated that a significant correlation between the denitrification and the anammox in sediments, with a correlation coefficient of 0.81 (p < 0.01). The contributions to N removal from the water columns and sediments in Lake Taihu were 53 % and 47 %, respectively. Denitrification predominantly drove N removal from sediments, whereas anammox dominated the N removal in water columns. Thus, N removal from the water columns is nonnegligible in shallow eutrophic lakes. This study enhances our understanding of N biogeochemical cycling dynamics in sediment-water and algae/macrophyte ecosystems across various shallow eutrophic lake regions.

Rapid detection of furanyl fentanyl in complex matrices using Leidenfrost desorption-assisted low-temperature arc plasma ionization mass spectrometry

The abuse of illicit drugs poses serious threats to the physical and mental health of users, as well as to the overall safety and welfare of society. In this work, we present a newly developed technique for drug detection based on mass spectrometry. This technique combines Leidenfrost desorption with low-temperature arc plasma ionization mass spectrometry. This method is applicable for detecting furanyl fentanyl in complex matrices. Key advantages of this technique include minimal sample fragmentation and high sensitivity for detection. The Leidenfrost desorption plays a pivotal role in this methodology, as it spontaneously concentrates analyte molecules during the gradual evaporation of the solvent. Eventually, these concentrated molecules are redistributed at their highest concentrations, resulting in exceptionally high sensitivity. In the course of our investigation, we achieved a remarkable detection limit of 10 pg mL-1 for furanyl fentanyl in pure water. Moreover, the characteristic ion peaks of furanyl fentanyl can be distinctly identified within complex matrices such as wine, beverages, urine, and lake water. This innovative drug detection technology offers several advantages, including a simple setup, cost-effectiveness, rapid detection, high sensitivity, and minimal sample pretreatment.

Prediction of chlorophyll a and risk assessment of water blooms in Poyang Lake based on a machine learning method

Four different methods were used to identify the important factors influencing chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) content: correlation analysis (CC-NMI), principal component analysis (PCA), decision tree (DT), and random forest recursive feature elimination (RF-RFE). Considering the relationship between Chl-a and its active and passive factors, we established machine learning combination models based on multiple linear regression (MLR), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), and support vector regression (SVR) to predict Chl-a content for Poyang Lake, China. Then, the predictive effects of different combination models were compared and evaluated from multiple perspectives. Considering the actual needs for eutrophication prevention and control, the concept of risk probability was then introduced to assess the risk degree of risk associated with water blooms in Poyang Lake. The results indicated that the mean R2 for the Chl-a predictions using the MLR, MLP, and SVR models was 0.21, 0.61, and 0.75, respectively. Consequently, the SVR model demonstrated higher precision and more accurate predictions. Compared to other methods, integrating the SVR model with the RF-RFE method significantly improved the prediction accuracy, with the R2 increasing to 0.94. For Poyang Lake, 8.8% of random samples indicated a low risk level with a water bloom probability of 21.1%-36.5%; one sample indicated a medium risk level with a risk probability of 45.5%. The research results offer valuable insights for predicting eutrophication and conducting risk assessments for Poyang Lake. They also provide reliable scientific support for making decisions about eutrophication in lakes and reservoirs. Therefore, the results hold significant theoretical importance, practical value, and potential for widespread application.

Size-resolved aerosol at a Coastal Great Lakes Site: Impacts of new particle formation and lake spray

The quantification of aerosol size distributions is crucial for understanding the climate and health impacts of aerosols, validating models, and identifying aerosol sources. This work provides one of the first continuous measurements of aerosol size distribution from 1.02 to 8671 nm near the shore of Lake Michigan. The data were collected during the Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS 2017), a comprehensive air quality measurement campaign in May and June 2017. The time-resolved (2-min) size distribution are reported herein alongside meteorology, remotely sensed data, gravimetric filters, and gas-phase variables. Mean concentrations of key aerosol parameters include PM2.5 (6.4 μg m-3), number from 1 to 3 nm (1.80x104 cm-3) and number greater than 3 nm (8x103 cm-3). During the field campaign, approximately half of days showed daytime ultrafine burst events, characterized by particle growth from sub 10 nm to 25-100 nm. A specific investigation of ultrafine lake spray aerosol was conducted due to enhanced ultrafine particles in onshore flows coupled with sustained wave breaking conditions during the campaign. Upon closer examination, the relationships between the size distribution, wind direction, wind speed, and wave height did not qualitatively support ultrafine particle production from lake spray aerosol; statistical analysis of particle number and wind speed also failed to show a relationship. The alternative hypothesis of enhanced ultrafine particles in onshore flow originating mainly from new particle formation activity is supported by multiple lines of evidence.

An assessment of a biosensor system for the quantification of microcystins in freshwater cyanobacterial blooms

Microcystin-producing cyanobacterial blooms are a global issue threatening drinking water supplies and recreation on lakes and beaches. Direct measurement of microcystins is the only way to ensure waters have concentrations below guideline concentrations; however, analyzing water for microcystins takes several hours to days to obtain data. We tested LightDeck Diagnostics' bead beater cell lysis and two versions of the quantification system designed to give microcystin concentrations within 20 min and compared it to the standard freeze-thaw cycle lysis method and ELISA quantification. The bead beater lyser was only 30 % effective at extracting microcystins compared to freeze-thaw. When considering freeze-thaw samples analyzed in 2021, there was good agreement between ELISA and LightDeck version 2 (n = 152; R2 = 0.868), but the LightDeck slightly underestimated microcystins (slope of 0.862). However, we found poor relationships between LightDeck version 2 and ELISA in 2022 (n = 49, slopes 0.60 to 1.6; R2 < 0.6) and LightDeck version 1 (slope = 1.77 but also a high number of less than quantifiable concentrations). After the quantification issues are resolved, combining the LightDeck system with an already-proven rapid lysis method (such as microwaving) will allow beach managers and water treatment operators to make quicker, well-informed decisions.

Variations in the concentration, inventory, source, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments of the Lake Chaohu

In this study, the ecological risk assessment of PAHs pollution, the existing S-T model was improved and applied to this PAHs pollution assessment in surface sediment in Lake Chaohu. The potential sources and contributions of PAHs in the surface sediment were estimated by molecular diagnostic ratio (MDR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The results showed that the average concentration of 16 priority PAHs in the surface sediment was 718.16 ng/g in 2009 and 334.67 ng/g in 2020. In 2020, PAHs concentration has decreased compared to 2009 and the dominant composition has changed from high- to low-molecular-weight PAHs. The estimated PAHs mass inventory of the top 2 cm surface sediment was 2712 tons in 2009 and 1263 tons in 2020. Ecosystem risk assessment by improved S-T models suggested that the overall ecosystem risk of the studied regions was acceptable.

Assessment of occurrence, partitioning and ecological risk for 144 steroid hormones in Taihu Lake using UPLC-MS/MS with machine learning model

Steroid hormones (SHs) have attracted mounting attention due to their endocrine-disrupting effects on humans and aquatic organisms. However, the lack of analytical methods and toxicity data for a large number of SHs has limited the effective management of SH contamination in the water-sediment systems. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method for the simultaneous quantification of 144 SHs to investigate their occurrence, spatial distribution and partitioning in the water and sediment in Taihu Lake. The results showed that the total concentrations of SHs in water and sediment were 366.88-998.23 ng/L (mean: 612.84 ng/L) and 17.46-150.20 ng/g (mean: 63.41 ng/g), respectively. The spatial distribution of SHs in Taihu Lake might be simultaneously influenced by the pollution sources, lake hydrodynamics, and sediment properties. The sediment-water partitioning result implied that 28 SHs were in dynamic equilibrium at the water-water interface. In addition, 22 and 12 SHs tended to spread to water and settle into sediment, respectively. To assess the ecological risk of all SHs, a robust random forest model (R2 = 0.801) was developed to predict the acute toxicity of SHs for which toxicity data were not available from publications. Risk assessment showed that SHs posed a high ecological risk throughout Taihu Lake, with the highest risk in the northwestern areas. Estrone, 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethynylestradiol were the dominant risk contributors and were therefore recommended as the priority SHs in Taihu Lake. This work provided a valuable dataset for Taihu Lake, which would help to provide guidance and suggestions for future studies and be useful for the government to develop the mitigation and management measures.

Chelativorans salis sp. nov., a slightly halophilic bacterium isolated from an enrichment system with saline lake sediment

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, and slightly halophilic alphaproteobacterium, designated strain EGI FJ00035T, was isolated from enrichment sediment samples of a saline lake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, PR China. The taxonomic position of the isolate was determined using the polyphasic taxonomic and phylogenomic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain EGI FJ00035T formed a distinct clade with 'Chelativorans alearense' UJN715 and 'Chelativorans xinjiangense' lm93 with sequence similarities of 98.44 and 98.22 %, respectively, while sharing less than 96.7 % with other valid type strains. The novel isolate could be distinguished from other species of the genus Chelativorans by its distinct phenotypic, physiological, and genotypic characteristics. Optimal growth of strain EGI FJ00035T occurred on marine agar 2216 at pH 7.0 and 30 °C. The major respiratory quinone was Q-10, while the major fatty acids (>5 %) were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c, summed feature 8 (C17 : 1 ω6c and/or C17 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0, C18 : 0, and iso-C17 : 0. The detected polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified aminophospholipids, unidentified glycolipids, and an unidentified lipid. Based on its genome sequence, the G+C content of strain EGI FJ00035T was 63.2 mol%. The average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of strain EGI FJ00035T against related members of the genus Chelativorans were below the thresholds for delineation of a novel species. According our polyphasic taxonomic data, strain EGI FJ00035T represents a new species of the genus Chelativorans, for which the name Chelativorans salis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed novel isolate is EGI FJ00035T (=KCTC 92251T=CGMCC 1.19480T).

Snapshot of cyanobacterial toxins in Pakistani freshwater bodies

Cyanobacteria are known to produce diverse secondary metabolites that are toxic to aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, data about the cyanotoxins occurrence and cyanobacterial diversity in Pakistan's drinking water reservoirs is scarce. In this study, we first investigated the presence of microcystin, saxitoxin, and anatoxin in 12 water bodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The observed cyanotoxin values for the risk quotient (RQ) determined by ELISA indicated a potential risk for aquatic life and human health. Based on this result, we made a more in-depth investigation with a subset of water bodies (served as major public water sources) to analyze the cyanotoxins dynamics and identify potential producers. We therefore quantified the distribution of 17 cyanotoxins, including 12 microcystin congeners using a high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS/MS). Our results revealed for the first time the co-occurrence of multiple cyanotoxins and the presence of cylindrospermopsin in an artificial reservoir (Rawal Lake) and a semi-saline lake (Kallar Kahar). We also quantified several microcystin congeners in a river (Panjnad) with MC-LR and MC-RR being the most prevalent and abundant. To identify potential cyanotoxin producers, the composition of the cyanobacterial community was characterized by shotgun metagenomics sequencing. Despite the noticeable presence of cyanotoxins, Cyanobacteria were not abundant. Synechococcus was the most abundant cyanobacterial genus found followed by a small amount of Anabaena, Cyanobium, Microcystis, and Dolichospermum. Moreover, when we looked at the cyanotoxins genes coverage, we never found a complete microcystin mcy operon. To our knowledge, this is the first snapshot sampling of water bodies in Pakistan. Our results would not only help to understand the geographical spread of cyanotoxin in Pakistan but would also help to improve cyanotoxin risk assessment strategies by screening a variety of cyanobacterial toxins and confirming that cyanotoxin quantification is not necessarily related to producer abundance.

[Spatial and Temporal Distribution and Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Water of Changshou Lake Reservoir, Chongqing]

To understand the water pollution status and environmental risks of Changshou Lake, the concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in the water were collected and analyzed during different seasons. The study investigated temporal and spatial variations, distribution characteristics, pollution levels, and health risks associated with heavy metals in Changshou Lake. The results showed that all six heavy metals were below than the Class Ⅰ standard of the Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard (GB 3838-2002), but recent years have witnessed an increasing trend, with Cu, As, and Pb showing a significant increase (P<0.05). The temporal and spatial distributions of these heavy metals were different. Temporally, Cr and Cd concentrations in surface water were higher in summer, As and Zn were higher in spring, and Pb and Cu were higher in autumn and winter. Spatially, the concentrations of Cr, As, Cu, Zn, and Pb showed higher concentrations in the southern outlet of the reservoir, the northwestern Longxi River inlet, and the central part of the reservoir, whereas Cd was higher in the northern stagnant area. The overall levels of heavy metals in the water body of Changshou Lake were low, with Cr and Cu slightly polluted, while other heavy metals were identified as having an insignificant pollution level. Drinking water was the primary exposure pathway to carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic heavy metals in surface water bodies. The health risk values of Cr and As in water bodies were high, ranging from 6.2×10-10 to 3.0×10-4 and 5.1×10-8 to 3.9×10-5, respectively. The corresponding contribution rates for children and adults to the total health risk were high, with Cr accounting for 87.18% and 87.20%, respectively, while As accounted for 12.73% and 12.71%, respectively. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize environmental risks associated with Cr and Cu, as well as the health risks associated with Cr and As in Changshou Lake These findings provide a scientific foundation for water pollution control and environmental quality improvement in Changshou Lake, and rational development and utilization of water resources.

Hysteresis analysis reveals how phytoplankton assemblage shifts with the nutrient dynamics during and between precipitation patterns

The escalation of global eutrophication has significantly increased due to the impact of climate change, particularly the increased frequency of extreme rainfall events. Predicting and managing eutrophication requires understanding the consequences of precipitation events on algal dynamics. Here, we assessed the influence of precipitation events throughout the year on nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics in a drinking water reservoir from January 2020 to January 2022. Four distinct precipitation patterns, namely early spring flood rain (THX), Plum rain (MY), Typhoon rain (TF), and Dry season (DS), were identified based on rainfall intensity, duration time, and cumulative rainfall. The study findings indicate that rainfall is the primary driver of algal dynamics by altering nutrient levels and TN:TP ratios during wet seasons, while water temperature becomes more critical during the Dry season. Combining precipitation characteristics with the lag periods between algal proliferation and rainfall occurrence is essential for accurately assessing the impact of rainfall on algal blooms. The highest algae proliferation occurred approximately 20 and 30 days after the peak rainfall during the MY and DS periods, respectively. This was influenced by the intensity and cumulative precipitation. The reservoir exhibited two distinct TN/TP ratio stages, with average values of 52 and 19, respectively. These stages were determined by various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainfall-driven inflows and were associated with shifts from Bacillariophyta-dominated to Cyanophyta-dominated blooms during the MY and DS seasons. Our findings underscore the interconnected effects of nutrients, temperature, and hydrological conditions driven by diverse rainfall patterns in shaping algal dynamics. This study provides valuable insights into forecasting algal bloom risks in the context of climate change and developing sustainable strategies for lake or reservoir restoration.

Key results from the salt lake regional smoke, ozone, and aerosol study (SAMOZA)

The Northern Wasatch Front area is one of ~ 50 metropolitan regions in the U.S. that do not meet the 2015 O3 standard. To better understand the causes of high O3 days in this region we conducted the Salt Lake regional Smoke, Ozone and Aerosol Study (SAMOZA) in the summer of 2022. The primary goals of SAMOZA were: Measure a suite of VOCs, by Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) and the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) cartridge method.Evaluate whether the standard UV O3 measurements made in SLC show a positive bias during smoke events, as has been suggested in some recent studies.Use the observations to conduct photochemical modeling and statistical/machine learning analyses to understand photochemistry on both smoke-influenced and non-smoke days.Implications: The Northern Wasatch Front area is one of ~50 metropolitan regions in the U.S. that do not meet the 2015 O3 standard. To better understand the causes of high O3 days in this region we conducted the Salt Lake regional Smoke, Ozone and Aerosol Study (SAMOZA) in the summer of 2022. A number of policy relevant findings are identified in the manuscript including role of smoke and NOx vs VOC sensitivity.

Microcystis genotypes in a tropical freshwater lake: Discovery of novel MIB-producing Microcystis with potentially unique synthesis pathway

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a threat to freshwater systems over the world due to the production of hepatotoxins like microcystin (MC), and nuisance taste and odour (T&O) compounds like 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). While MCs are known to cause detrimental effects to both water quality and human health, MIB is only reported to cause aesthetical problems. In this study, we investigated a tropical, urban lake that was experiencing persistent MC and MIB events. Although it was dominated by Microcystis blooms, analysis revealed that the toxigenic Microcystis were not the only species driving the MC concentrations. Additionally, there was also a lack of causative species for the MIB events. Through isolation, we have identified three toxigenic Microcystis found to produce four different variants of MCs, and two novel non-toxigenic Microcystis that were capable of producing MIB. The ability to produce MIB had never been previously reported for this species. Compared to other major producers such as Planktothricoides sp. and Streptomyces sp., the MIB synthase genes of our Microcystis sp. strains were partial, illustrating the possibility of unique synthesis pathways. The Microcystis sp. strains were found to produce about 2.77-5.22 fg MIB cell-1, with a majority of the contents (70-80 %) existing in the extracellular phase. Correlation analysis of field study indicated that phosphorus limitation may have an indirect effect on non-toxigenic Microcystis abundance and proportion by influencing the toxigenic genotype, suggesting that current measures to control HABs may favour the proliferation of the non-toxigenic Microcystis. The potential for Microcystis sp. to produce MIB through unique synthesis pathway, coupled with the potential dominance of non-toxigenic genotypes in Microcystis blooms, signals the possibility that non-toxigenic Microcystis should be monitored as well.

Dynamic monitoring and analysis of chlorophyll-a concentrations in global lakes using Sentinel-2 images in Google Earth Engine

Remote estimation of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) has long been used to investigate the responses of aquatic ecosystems to global climate change. High-spatiotemporal-resolution Sentinel-2 satellite images make it possible to routinely monitor and trace the spatial distributions of lake Chl-a if reliable retrieval algorithms are available. In this study, Sentinel-2 images and in-situ measured data were used to develop a Chl-a retrieval algorithm based on 13 optical water types (OWTs) with a satisfying performance (R2 = 0.74, RMSE = 0.42 mg/m3, MAE = 0.33 mg/m3, and MAPE = 55.56 %). After removing the disturbance of algal blooms and other factors, the distribution of Chl-a in 3067 of the largest global lakes (≥50 km2) was mapped using the Google Earth Engine (GEE). From 2019 to 2021, the average Chl-a concentration was 16.95 ± 5.95 mg/m3 for the largest global lakes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, global lake-averaged Chl-a concentration reached its lowest value in 2020. From the perspective of spatial distribution, lakes with low Chl-a concentrations were mainly distributed in high-latitude, high-elevation, or economically underdeveloped areas. Among all the potential influencing factors, lake surface temperature had the largest contribution to Chl-a and showed a positive correlation with Chl-a in approximately 92.39 % of the lakes. Conversely, factors such as precipitation and tree cover area around the lake were negatively correlated with Chl-a concentration in nearly 61.44 % of the lakes.

Inhibitory effects and mechanisms of insoluble humic acids on internal phosphorus release from the sediments

Release of phosphorus (P) from the sediments plays a critical role in the eutrophication of aquatic environments. Humic acids (HA), as the main form of carbon storage in the sediments, has essential impacts on the biogeochemical cycle of phosphorus in aquatic systems. Nevertheless, previous studies mainly concentrated on the competitive adsorption of HA solution and P on metal oxides and soils, with little attention paid to the effects of insoluble humic acids (IHA) on P sorption by and release from the sediments. Herein, an investigation on the rivers and lakes in Sichuan Province, China, found that there was a significantly positive correlation between the maximum P adsorption capacity (Qmax) of sediments and IHA contents (p < 0.01), but a significantly negative correlation between the zero equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) and IHA concentrations (p < 0.01). This indicated that IHA might have an inhibitory effect on the release of P from the sediments, which was verified by batch adsorption experiments and static incubation experiments. Adsorption experiments indicated that IHA can promote P adsorption by sediments. With the increase of IHA addition (from 0 to 20 mg/g) in the sediments, Qmax of sediments increased (from 0.516 to 0.911 mg/g), while EPC0 decreased greatly (from 0.264 to 0.005 mg/L). Increases in Fe (Ⅲ) bound-P, Al bound-P and humic bound-P caused by IHA were responsible for this promoting effect. Incubation experiments illustrated that IHA addition can efficiently inhibit P release from the sediments. After 32 days incubation, P concentration in the overlying water of control group (without IHA addition) was 0.651 mg/L, which was 13.29-40.69 times higher than those (0.016-0.049 mg/L) in the test groups (with 5 %-20 % IHA addition). The analysis of P species in sediments showed that transformation from loosely adsorbed-P and Fe (Ⅲ) bound-P to Al bound-P and humic bound-P was responsible for this inhibition of P release by IHA. This study demonstrated that IHA, differing from readily degradable or dissolved organic matter, have great inhibitory effects on internal P release, which provided a novel insight into the association between carbon burial and internal P release and even the management of water eutrophication.

Remote sensing retrieval and driving analysis of phytoplankton density in the large storage freshwater lake: A study based on random forest and Landsat-8 OLI

Remote sensing monitoring of seasonal changes in phytoplankton density and analyses of the driving factors of phytoplankton densities are necessary for assessing the health of aquatic ecosystems, controlling lake eutrophication, and formulating ecological restoration policies. Building upon the satellite-ground synchronization experiment that involves the in situ aquatic ecological monitoring conducted in Nansi Lake, which is the largest storage lake situated along the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, we developed a phytoplankton density retrieval model utilizing the random forest (RF) method and Landsat-8 OLI data. On this basis, we mapped the seasonal fluctuations and spatial disparities in the phytoplankton densities from 2013 to 2023. Subsequently, we conducted a detailed analysis of the driving factors and considered both the natural and anthropogenic aspects. The results indicate that (1) the RF model, when utilizing three band combinations, yielded favorable results with R2, RMSE and MAE values of 0.67, 1.31 × 106 cells/L and 1.18 × 106 cells/L, respectively. (2) The phytoplankton densities exhibited both seasonal and spatial variations, with higher concentrations in summer and autumn than in spring and winter. Significantly, the northwestern region of Zhaoyang Lake and the southeastern region of Weishan Lake had substantially greater phytoplankton densities than did the other areas. Furthermore, overarching upward trends were observed from 2013 to 2023, reflecting an annual rate of increase of 3.32%. (3) An analysis of the causal factors indicated that temperatures and gross agricultural production levels are the primary drivers influencing the seasonal variations and distributions of phytoplankton densities. In the future, we will delve into the potential of deep learning and utilize various satellite sensors to explore the intricacies of phytoplankton monitoring, as well as the complex mechanisms that influence aquatic ecological health.

Migration mechanism and risk assessment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the Ya'Er Lake oxidation pond area, China

The migration mechanisms, sources, and environmental risks of 29 legacy and emerging perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl species present in an oxidation pond (Ya'Er Lake) were investigated for treating sewage based on the analysis of their occurrence and distribution. The concentration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in pond area was between 0.30 and 63.2 ng/g dw (dry weight), with the overall average concentration of 8.00 ng/g dw. Notably, the PFAS concentrations in the surface sediments near the sewage outlet in Pond-1 (50.2 ng/g dw) and Pond-5 (average 15.1 ng/g dw) were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than those in other areas. In general, the legacy PFAS, i.e., perfluorooctane sulfonic acid was considered to be the major pollutant in the polluted area, on average, accounting for 73.0% of the total concentration of PFAS pollutants. By evaluating the regional distribution of different PFAS homologs, the short-chain PFAS pollutants with lower Kow were found to migrate farther in both horizontal and vertical directions. The sewage outlets in Pond-1 and Pond-5 are the main pollution sources in polluted area and the emerging PFAS pollutants in Pond-5 have replaced the legacy PFAS pollutants as the main pollutants. Based on positive matrix factorization analysis, three main industrial sources of PFAS pollutants in the study area were identified: protective coating, fire-fighting, and food packaging sources. Moreover, the environmental risk assessment results showed that most study areas exhibited medium environmental risk (0.01 ≤ Risk quotient (RQ) < 1), indicating that the ecological environment risks in this area need further attention.

Evaluation of some heavy metals and selenium pollution in Karataş Lake (Burdur/Türkiye) using various pollution indices and statistical analysis

Wetland face environmental problems due to some reasons such as drought, rapid population and rapid developments in technology. Karataş Lake is located within the Lakes Region in Türkiye and has also of great economically, ecologically and ornithologically importance. Unfortunately, it completely dried out in 2021 due to sufficient rainfall, groundwater withdrawal and global climate change. In 2022, the lake started to hold water again. This study is important because it is one of the last studies before the lake dries up and first study to evaluate some heavy metals and selenium pollution using some indices. In this study, which was carried out between October 2019-July 2020, some heavy metals and selenium concentrations were determined in water of Karataş Lake seasonally and evaluated pollution degree of lake water using some indices and statistical analysis. Water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen levels were measured in situ using YSI 556 MPS. For heavy metal analysis, water samples were taken, acidified to a pH of <2, stored at 4 °C and analyzed directly using ICP-OES (Agilent 5110). Pb and Se in all seasons were below detection limit. The analyzed metals sorted as; Cd < Mo < Cr < Cu < Mn < Zn < Ni < Fe. Generally, heavy metals were increased in autumn and decreased in spring. According to some water quality standards for drinking water, Fe levels were higher than the permissible levels for drinking water in all seasons (TSE, 2005; EPA, 2018; EU, 2020), Mn in autumn (TSE, 2005; EPA, 2018; EU, 2020), Ni in autumn and summer (TSE, 2005; EU, 2020). Water Quality Index (WQI), Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) and Heavy Metal Evaluation Index (HEI) values were calculated in Karataş Lake to determine pollution degree. Depend on WQI results, lake water was in good category in autumn, winter and spring while poor category in summer. The lake water samples based on HPI and HEI values are in the low contamination category. The lake is still struggling with environmental problems. If necessary precautions are not taken for the future of the lake, the lake may dry out again. The results of this study will help the authorities in terms of preventing re-drying, sustainability of the lake and management of the region. This study will be also a reference for future studies.

Increased dominance of terrestrial component in dissolved organic matter in Chinese lakes

The source composition of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in lakes is closely related to regional environmental changes, human activities, and the carbon cycle. The spectral slope ratio (SR) is an important parameter of CDOM optical components, and combined with remote sensing technology, the source composition of CDOM can be tracked comprehensively and efficiently in large regions. Here, we proposed a CDOM source tracking remote sensing model (CDOM-SR) based on the hue angle (α) to assess the spatial pattern and long-term trend of the CDOM source composition in Chinese lakes (surface area ≥ 1 km2) from 1986 to 2021. Validation results show that the CDOM-SR model has a good SR estimation performance with a median absolute percentage difference, root mean square deviation, median ratio, and median deviation of 17.91 %, 0.23, 1.02, and 0.03, respectively. We found that the average SR of Chinese lakes presents an obvious spatial pattern of high in the west and low in the east due to the difference in human activity intensity and the natural geographical environment. Additionally, we found that the average SR of Chinese lakes from 1986 to 2021 decreased at a rate of - 0.06/10 years, of which 64.37 % of lakes decreased significantly, 15.42 % of lakes had no significant change, and only 20.20 % of lakes increased. The widespread decrease in the average SR indicates that the increasing human activity discharge of terrestrial organic matter has had an important impact on the source composition of the CDOM in Chinese lakes. Our results provide a new resource for remote sensing monitoring of CDOM sources and important insights into lake carbon cycling under the influence of ongoing human activities.

Spatial and Temporal Variability of Saxitoxin-Producing Cyanobacteria in U.S. Urban Lakes

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) are of growing global concern due to their production of toxic compounds, which threaten ecosystems and human health. Saxitoxins (STXs), commonly known as paralytic shellfish poison, are a neurotoxic alkaloid produced by some cyanobacteria. Although many field studies indicate a widespread distribution of STX, it is understudied relative to other cyanotoxins such as microcystins (MCs). In this study, we assessed eleven U.S. urban lakes using qPCR, sxtA gene-targeting sequencing, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to understand the spatio-temporal variations in cyanobacteria and their potential role in STX production. During the blooms, qPCR analysis confirmed the presence of the STX-encoding gene sxtA at all lakes. In particular, the abundance of the sxtA gene had a strong positive correlation with STX concentrations in Big 11 Lake in Kansas City, which was also the site with the highest quantified STX concentration. Sequencing analysis revealed that potential STX producers, such as Aphanizomenon, Dolichospermum, and Raphidiopsis, were present. Further analysis targeting amplicons of the sxtA gene identified that Aphanizomenon and/or Dolichospermum are the primary STX producer, showing a significant correlation with sxtA gene abundances and STX concentrations. In addition, Aphanizomenon was associated with environmental factors, such as conductivity, sulfate, and orthophosphate, whereas Dolichospermum was correlated with temperature and pH. Overall, the results herein enhance our understanding of the STX-producing cyanobacteria and aid in developing strategies to control HCBs.

The ratio but not individual of fragile to refractory DOM affects greenhouse gases release in different trophic level lakes

Inland shallow lakes are recognized as an important source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and their contribution is expected to increase due to global eutrophication. The generation and release of GHGs involved multiple variables, leading to many uncertain potential factors. This study examined the emission characteristics of GHGs at the water-air interface in 12 shallow lakes categorized into four eutrophic levels in the Yangtze River basin. The average emission rates of CH4, CO2 and N2O were 1.55, 3.43, 18.13 and 30.47 mg m-2 h-1, 4.12, 14.64, 25.11 and 69.84 mg m-2 h-1, and 0.2, 0.25, 0.43 and 0.79 mg m-2 day-1 in the oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic and hypereutrophic lakes, respectively. There were significant correlations between eutrophic levels and the emission rates of CH4 and CO2 (p < 0.05). Redundancy analysis and Mantel test were conducted to further examine the key factors influencing carbon emissions from eutrophic water. It was found that the presence of algae and nutrients in the overlying water played a crucial role in the release of GHGs, indicating the importance of ecosystem productivity in the carbon budget of the lake. In order to assess the bioavailability of organic matter, a new indicator called R(P/H) was proposed. This indicator represents the ratio of protein and humus-like components, which were obtained through EEMs-PARAFAC modeling. The relationship between R(P/H) and CH4 was found to be exponential (R2 = 0.90). Additionally, R(P/H) showed a linear relationship with CO2 and N2O (R2 = 0.68, R2 = 0.75). Therefore, it is crucial to consider R(P/H) as an important factor in accurately estimating global GHG emission fluxes in the future, especially with advancements in the database.

Identifying the drivers of chlorophyll-a dynamics in a landscape lake recharged by reclaimed water using interpretable machine learning

The water quality of lakes recharged by reclaimed water is affected by both the fluctuation of reclaimed water quality and the biochemical processes in the lakes, and therefore the main controlling factors of algal blooms are difficult to identify. Taking a typical landscape lake recharged by reclaimed water as an example and using the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and correlation analysis of water quality indexes, we propose an interpretable machine learning framework based on random forest to predict chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The model considered nutrient difference indexes between reclaimed water and lake water, and further used feature importance ranking and partial dependence plot to identify nutrient drivers. Results show that the NO3--N input from reclaimed water is the dominant nutrient driver for algal bloom especially at high temperatures, and the negative correlation between NO3--N and Chl-a in the lake water is the consequence of algal bloom rather than the cause. Our study provides new insights into the identification of eutrophication factors for lakes recharged by reclaimed water.

Greenhouse gas emissions from Daihai Lake, China: Should eutrophication and salinity promote carbon emission dynamics?

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted or absorbed by lakes are an important component of the global carbon cycle. However, few studies have focused on the GHG dynamics of eutrophic saline lakes, thus preventing a comprehensive understanding of the carbon cycle. Here, we conducted four sampling analyses using a floating chamber in Daihai Lake, a eutrophication saline lake in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, to explore its carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions. The mean CO2 emission flux (FCO2) and CH4 emission flux (FCH4) were 17.54 ± 14.54 mmol/m2/day and 0.50 ± 0.50 mmol/m2/day, respectively. The results indicated that Daihai Lake was a source of CO2 and CH4, and GHG emissions exhibited temporal variability. The mean CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and CH4 partial pressure (pCH4) were 561.35 ± 109.59 µatm and 17.02 ± 13.45 µatm, which were supersaturated relative to the atmosphere. The regression and correlation analysis showed that the main influencing factors of pCO2 were wind speed, dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen (TN) and Chlorophyll a (Chl.a), whereas the main influencing factors of pCH4 were water temperature (WT), Chl.a, nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), TN, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and water depth. Salinity regulated carbon mineralization and organic matter decomposition, and it was an important influencing factor of pCO2 and pCH4. Additionally, the trophic level index (TLI) significantly increased pCH4. Our study elucidated that salinity and eutrophication play an important role in the dynamic changes of GHG emissions. However, research on eutrophic saline lakes needs to be strengthened.

Aerosolized Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Bloom Toxins: Microcystin Congeners Quantified in the Atmosphere

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) have the potential to adversely affect public health through the production of toxins such as microcystins, which consist of numerous molecularly distinct congeners. Microcystins have been observed in the atmosphere after emission from freshwater lakes, but little is known about the health effects of inhaling microcystins and the factors contributing to microcystin aerosolization. This study quantified total microcystin concentrations in water and aerosol samples collected around Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM), Ohio. Microcystin concentrations in water samples collected on the same day ranged from 13 to 23 μg/L, dominated by the d-Asp3-MC-RR congener. In particulate matter <2.5 μm (PM2.5), microcystin concentrations up to 156 pg/m3 were detected; the microcystins were composed primarily of d-Asp3-MC-RR, with additional congeners (d-Asp3-MC-HtyR and d-Asp3-MC-LR) observed in a sample collected prior to a storm event. The PM size fraction containing the highest aerosolized MC concentration ranged from 0.44 to 2.5 μm. Analysis of total bacteria by qPCR targeting 16S rDNA revealed concentrations up to 9.4 × 104 gc/m3 in aerosol samples (≤3 μm), while a marker specific to cyanobacteria was not detected in any aerosol samples. Concentrations of aerosolized microcystins varied even when concentrations in water were relatively constant, demonstrating the importance of meteorological conditions (wind speed and direction) and aerosol generation mechanism(s) (wave breaking, spillway, and aeration systems) when evaluating inhalation exposure to microcystins and subsequent impacts on human health.

Reactive Oxygen Species and Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter Drive the Aquatic Photochemical Pathways and Photoproducts of 6PPD-quinone under Simulated High-Latitude Conditions

The photochemical degradation pathways of 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ, 6PPD-Q), a toxic transformation product of the tire antiozonant 6PPD, were determined under simulated sunlight conditions typical of high-latitude surface waters. Direct photochemical degradation resulted in 6PPDQ half-lives ranging from 17.5 h at 20 °C to no observable degradation over 48 h at 4 °C. Sensitization of excited triplet-state pathways using Cs+ and Ar purging demonstrated that 6PPDQ does not decompose significantly from a triplet state relative to a singlet state. However, assessment of processes involving reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenchers and sensitizers indicated that singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical do significantly contribute to the degradation of 6PPDQ. Investigation of these processes in natural lake waters indicated no difference in attenuation rates for direct photochemical processes at 20 °C. This suggests that direct photochemical degradation will dominate in warm waters, while indirect photochemical pathways will dominate in cold waters, involving ROS mediated by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Overall, the aquatic photodegradation rate of 6PPDQ will be strongly influenced by the compounding effects of environmental factors such as light screening and temperature on both direct and indirect photochemical processes. Transformation products were identified via UHPLC-Orbitrap mass spectrometry, revealing four major processes: (1) oxidation and cleavage of the quinone ring in the presence of ROS, (2) dealkylation, (3) rearrangement, and (4) deamination. These data indicate that 6PPDQ can photodegrade in cool, sunlit waters under the appropriate conditions: t1/2 = 17.4 h tono observable decrease (direct); t1/2 = 5.2-11.2 h (indirect, CDOM).

[Driving Factors Analyze of Phytoplankton Community by Comparison of Population and Functional Groups and Water Quality Evaluation in Dongting Lake]

Phytoplankton is the most important component of water ecosystems, which could indicate the state of the water environment owing to its sensitivity to water environment variation. However, its response to the environment is influenced by classification methods. To understand the phytoplankton population(phyla and genera) and functional groups(FG) for driving response characteristics and applicability to the environment in Dongting Lake, a total of four samples were collected from the lake from March to December 2019, and the distribution characteristics of the phytoplankton population and functional groups and their responses to environmental factors were compared and analyzed. Meanwhile, the applicability of the TLI index, Shannon-Wiener index, and Q index was compared in Dongting Lake. The results showed that a total of 61 genera belonging to six phyla of phytoplankton were detected in Dongting Lake, which could be divided into 23 functional groups and nine dominant functional groups. The succession trend of functional groups was P/MP/D(March)→MP/P/J(June)→MP/H1(September)→Y/P/MP(December). The results of hierarchical segmentation showed that the population distribution and change in phytoplankton were driven by environmental factors more than the area in Dongting Lake. The main environmental factors affecting phytoplankton population and functional groups were water temperature(WT), permanganate index, dissolved oxygen(DO), conductivity(Cond), water level(WL), and total phosphorus(TP). RDA analysis showed that phytoplankton functional groups identified phytoplankton response to environmental factors better than phytoplankton population. It was shown that using the Q index to evaluate water quality had better applicability in Dongting Lake.

Estimating plastic pollution in rivers through harmonized monitoring strategies

Plastics in rivers and lakes have direct local impact, and may also reach the world's oceans. Monitoring river plastic pollution is therefore key to quantify, understand and reduce plastics in all aquatic ecosystems. The lack of harmonization between ongoing monitoring efforts compromises the direct comparison and combination of available data. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched guidelines on freshwater plastic monitoring, to provide a starting point for practitioners and scientists towards harmonized data collection, analysis, and reporting. We developed a five-step workflow to support to design effective plastic monitoring strategies. The workflow was applied to three rivers (Rhine, Mekong and Odaw) across relevant gradients, including geography, hydrology, and plastic pollution levels. We show that despite the simplicity of the selected methods and the limited duration of the data collection, our harmonized approach provides crucial insights in the state of plastic pollution in very different river basins globally.

Quantifying Stochastic Processes in Shaping Dissolved Organic Matter Pool with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents a ubiquitous molecular mixture, progressively characterized by spatiotemporal resolution. However, an inadequate comprehension of DOM molecular dynamics, especially the stochastic processes involved, hinders carbon cycling predictions. This study employs ecological principles to introduce a neutral theory to elucidate the fundamental processes involving molecular generation, degradation, and migration. A neutral model is thus formulated to assess the probability distribution of DOM molecules, whose frequencies and abundances follow a β-distribution relationship. The neutral model is subsequently validated with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) data from various waterbodies, including lakes, rivers, and seas. The model fitting highlights the prevalence of molecular neutral distribution and quantifies the stochasticity within DOM molecular dynamics. Furthermore, the model identifies deviations of HRMS observations from neutral expectations in photochemical and microbial experiments, revealing nonrandom molecular transformations. The ecological null model further validates the neutral modeling results, demonstrating that photodegradation reduces molecular stochastic dynamics at the surface of an acidic pit lake, while random distribution intensifies at the river surface compared with the porewater. Taken together, the DOM molecular neutral model emphasizes the significance of stochastic processes in shaping a natural DOM pool, offering a potential theoretical framework for DOM molecular dynamics in aquatic and other ecosystems.

Unlocking the potential of Dongting Lake-grown Miscanthus lutarioriparius biomass: A comprehensive quality analysis and bioproduct application study

Miscanthus lutarioriparius grown in Dongting Lake has an annual biomass yield potential of 1 million tons. However, with the shutdown of its previous utilization for paper-making, abandoning this huge amount of biomass has caused serious economic, ecological, and social problems. Constructing an industrial cluster to continuously convert biomass into various bioproducts is a win-win measure to address this dilemma. With the increasing confirmation of the importance of biomass quality affecting the conservation process, fully understanding the biomass characteristics of Dongting Lake-grown M. lutarioriparius is crucial for building a scientific industrial cluster. The present work is designed to explore the variation in biomass quality across the entire Dongting Lake area. Results show that the biomass contented with Cd, Mn, Zn, and Cr has significant geographical differences, with a general trend of Southern Dongting Lake-grown biomass having a higher concentration than that from Eastern and Western Dongting Lake areas. Moreover, significant differences are found in terms of biomass ash content, lignin content, and the degree of polymerization of cellulose (DP). The biomass with low ash content is generally from the entire Eastern Dongting Lake area and the northern part of the Western Dongting Lake area. Virtually all Western Dongting Lake-grown biomass has a low lignin content (approximately 18 %). Regarding the spatial variation of DP, Eastern Dongting Lake-grown biomass has a higher DP (average at 585.33) than that in Southern (575.15) and then Western Dongting Lake (529.16). Based on these quality indicators, the biomass production potentials for bioethanol, biochar, and xylo-oligosaccharide were calculated and visualized. Results show that biomass from almost the entire Western and Eastern Dongting Lake area is suitable for bioethanol and xylo-oligosaccharide production, while biomass from the Southern Dongting Lake area for biochar production. These results provide scientific guidance for the future utilization of Dongting Lake-grown M. lutarioriparius biomass.

Spatiotemporal distribution and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from Luoma Lake, an important node of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

PPCPs (pharmaceuticals and personal care products) are widely found in the environment and can be a risk to human and ecosystem health. In this study, spatiotemporal distribution, critical risk source identification and potential risks of 14 PPCPs found in water collected from sampling points in Luoma Lake and its inflowing rivers in two seasons in 2019 and 2020 were investigated. The PPCPs concentrations ranged from 27.64 ng·L-1 to 613.08 ng·L-1 in December 2019, and from 16.67 ng·L-1 to 3287.41 ng·L-1 in April 2020. Ketoprofen (KPF) dominated the PPCPs with mean concentrations of 125.85 ng·L-1 and 640.26 ng·L-1, respectively. Analysis of sources showed that the pollution in Luoma Lake mostly originated from sewage treatment plant effluents, inflowing rivers and domestic wastewater. Among them, the inflowing rivers contributed the most (82.95%) to the concentration of total PPCPs. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that there was a moderate risk (0.1 < RQs < 1) from carbamazepine (CBZ) in December 2019 and a high risk (RQs > 1) from naproxen (NPX) in April 2020. The results of human risk assessment found that NPX posed a high risk to infant health, and we found that NPX was associated with 83 diseases according to Comparative Toxicogenomics Database. NPX was identified as a substance requiring major attention. The results provide an understanding of the concentrations and ecological risks of PPCPs in Luoma Lake. We believe the data will support environmental departments to develop management strategies and prevent PPCPs pollution.

Label-Free Chemiresistive Sensors Based on Self-Assembled Ti3C2Tx MXene Films for Monitoring of Microcystin-LR in Water Samples

Herein, we propose a label-free chemiresistive sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of microcystin (MC)-LR in water samples. The sensor uses a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled conductive film consisting of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets as the sensing channel. It is further modified by using an aptamer for the specific recognition of MC-LR. The response signal is based on the change in resistance of the conductive channel upon binding of MC-LR with the aptamer. Our novel strategy is the first concept proposed for immobilizing the aptamer containing -SH on the channel surface through a Ti-S bond under weakly alkaline condition. The resulting sensor is highly sensitive and stable for the detection of MC-LR, with a detection limit of 0.18 ng L-1 and a wide linear range from 1 to 104 ng L-1. We used the sensor to continuously monitor MC-LR released by cultivated Microcystis aeruginosa, showing a strong relationship between MC-LR and cell density. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully used to measure MC-LR in freshwater lakes with moderate algal blooms, and the results agreed well with those obtained by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The present study provides a reliable method for highly sensitive and selective detection of MC-LR in environmental waters.

Fluxes in CO2 and CH4 and influencing factors at the sediment-water interface in a eutrophic saline lake

Although saline aquatic ecosystems are significant emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs), dynamic changes in GHGs at the sediment-water interface remain unclear. The present investigation carried out a total of four sampling campaigns in Daihai Lake, which is a eutrophic saline lake situated in a semi-arid area of northern China. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes at the sediment-water interface and the influencing factors. The mean concentrations of porewater CO2 and CH4 were 44.98 ± 117.99 μmol L-1 and 124.36 ± 97.00 μmol L-1, far exceeding those in water column of 11.14 ± 2.16 μmol L-1 and 0.33 ± 0.23 μmol L-1, respectively. The CO2 and CH4 fluxes at the sediment-water interface (FS-WCO2 and FS-WCH4) exhibited significant spatial and temporal variations, with mean values of 9.24 ± 13.84 μmol m-2 d-1 and 3.53 ± 4.36 μmol m-2 d-1, respectively, indicating that sediment is the source of CO2 and CH4 in the water column. However, CO2 and CH4 fluxes were much lower than those measured at the water-air interface in a companion study (17.54 ± 14.54 mmol m-2d-1 and 0.50 ± 0.50 mmol m-2d-1, respectively), indicating that the diffusive flux of gases at the sediment-water interface was not the primary source of CO2 and CH4 emissions to the atmosphere. Regression and correlation analyses revealed that salinity (Sal) and nutrients were the most influential factors on porewater gas concentrations, and that gas fluxes increased with increasing gas concentrations and porosity. The microbial activity of sediment is greatly affected by nutrients and Sal. Additionally, Sal has the ability to regulate biogeochemical processes, thereby regulating GHG emissions. The present investigation addresses the research gap concerning GHG emissions from sediments of eutrophic saline lakes. The study suggests that controlling the eutrophication and salinization of lakes could be a viable strategy for reducing carbon emissions from lakes. However, further investigations are required to establish more conclusive results.

Incorporating carbon sequestration into lake management: A potential perspective on climate change

Exploring the carbon sequestration capacity of water ecosystems would contribute to coping with climate change. This study conducted an integrated method framework to achieve an improved understanding of the relationship between carbon sequestration and lake ecosystem components, as well as provide a new perspective on climate change for policymakers. The vertically generalized production model revealed the carbon sequestration capacity of lakes. The hierarchical linear model identified the cross-scale factors affecting phytoplankton. Then a developed multi-agents-based model with scenario analysis provided adaptive management strategies for carbon sequestration. Furthermore, we applied the integrated framework in the 63 polluted lakes of Wuhan. The results showed that the average carbon sequestration per unit area was at 0.87 kgC·m-2·a-1, which was greater than that of the ocean and forest ecosystems, indicating that the lakes had a potential capacity for carbon sequestration. Total phosphorus had the strongest effect on the Chl-a (chlorophyll a) concentration (fixed effect (γ) =6.82, P < 0.1), followed by total nitrogen (γ = 6.38, P < 0.05), Rotifer biomass (γ = 1.95, P < 0.01) and water temperature (γ = 1.27, P < 0.05). These results indicated that the bottom-up effect of chemical factors on phytoplankton was greater than the top-down effect of zooplankton. The proportion of grassland at the whole-lakes level would have a negative synergistic impact on the Chl-a with changing the micro water temperature at the part-lakes level (γ = -46.64, P < 0.05). There was no significant interaction effect between land cover change and total nitrogen (phosphorus) on the Chl-a. Therefore, we could indirectly confirm that point source pollution emissions would synergistically affect the Chl-a and carbon sequestration along with the effects of physical-chemical conditions. The coordinated proportional control of nitrogen and phosphorus and the artificial controlling biomass of zooplankton-feeding fish were proposed to improve carbon sequestration and water quality for lake management.

Relationships between environmental factors and N-cycling microbes reveal the indirect effect of further eutrophication on denitrification and DNRA in shallow lakes

Traditional views indicate that eutrophication and subsequent algal blooms favor denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) in lake ecosystems. However, lakes tend to show an increasing propensity for inorganic nitrogen (N) limitation as they become more eutrophic. Thus, the influence of further eutrophication on denitrification and DNRA in eutrophic lakes are unclear due to the uncertainty of N availability. To fill this gap, we investigated the genes abundance (AOA, AOB, nirS, nirK and nrfA) and the composition of N-cycling microbes through quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, respectively, in 15 shallow eutrophic lakes of the Yangtze-Huaihe River basin, China. The results indicated that denitrification and DNRA rates could be modulated mainly by their functional gene abundances (nirS, nirK and nrfA), followed by the environmental factors (sediment total organic carbon and nitrogen). Denitrification rates significantly increased from slightly to highly eutrophic lakes, but DNRA rates were not. An explanation is that nitrification provided ample nitrate for denitrification, and this cooperative interaction was indicated by the positive correlation of their gene abundances. In addition, Pseudomonas and Anaeromyxobacter was the dominant genus mediated denitrification and DNRA, showing the potential to perform facultative anaerobic and strict anaerobic nitrate reduction, respectively. High level of dissolved oxygen might favor the facultatively aerobic denitrifiers over the obligately anaerobic fermentative DNRA bacteria in these shallow lakes. Chlorophyll a had a weak but positive effect on the gene abundances for nitrification (AOA and AOB). Further eutrophication had an indirect effect on denitrification and DNRA rates through modulating the genes abundances of N-cycling microbes.

Description and Genomic Analysis of the First Facultatively Lithoautotrophic, Thermophilic Bacteria of the Genus Thermaerobacter Isolated from Low-temperature Sediments of Lake Baikal

Members of the genus Thermaerobacter belong to the phylum Firmicutes and all isolates characterised to date are strictly aerobic and thermophilic. They were isolated from a mud sample of the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, hydrothermal vents, and silt compost. A novel thermophilic, facultatively lithoautotrophic bacteria of the genus Thermaerobacter, strain PB12/4term (=VKM B-3151T), with a metabolism that is uncharacteristic of the type species, was isolated from low-temperature surface sediments near the Posolsk Bank methane seep, Lake Baikal, Russia. The new strain grows with molecular hydrogen as electron donor, elemental sulfur, and thiosulfate as electron acceptors, and CO2/[Formula: see text] as carbon source. The genome of strain PB12/4term consists of one chromosome with a total length of 2.820.915 bp and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.2%. The phylogenomic reconstruction based on 120 conserved bacterial single-copy proteins revealed that strain PB12/4term belongs to the genus Thermaerobacter within in the class Thermaerobacteria, phylum Firmicutes_E. The strain PB12/4term is closely related to Thermaerobacter subterraneus DSM 13965 (ANI=95.08%, AF=0.91) and Thermaerobacter marianensis DSM 12885 (ANI=84.98%, AF=0.77). Genomic and experimental data confirm the ability of the Thermaerobacter PB12/4term pure culture to facultatively lithotrophic growth, which is provided by the presence of [NiFe]hydrogenase enzymes that are absent in T. marianensis DSM 12885 and T. subterraneus DSM 13965. The data obtained on the physiological and biochemical differences of strain PB12/4term provide a deeper insight into the species diversity and functional activity of the genus Thermaerobacter.

Analysis of bio-optical active constituents for lentic ecosystem through spectral-spatial and in-vitro observation

The neural network algorithm approach was adopted in Kolavai Lake to retrieve the inherent optical properties (IOP) of active constituents. The retrieval of IOP by absorption and the scattering of optically active constituents (OAC) through employing Sentinel-2 MSI reflectance and field measured the salinity and temperature. The result illustrates the relationship between the IOP and measured OAC's concentrations and its sensitivity towards spectral wavelength. It shows that the phytoplankton absorption ap is highly related with chlorophyll-a concentration and has an R2 value of 0.808. Furthermore, at the total absorption of water has high correlation with chl-a which indicates the significant dominance in the lentic water. Also, the pigment constituents are showing an R2 value of 0.754. The total backscattering of water (btot) is strongly related to the total suspended matter with R value > 0.73. The spatial distribution of OAC in Kolavai Lake helps monitor the lake water quality. This approach is well-performed in estimating the inherent optical properties of optically active constituents that gives insight for assessing the relationship between IOP and water quality. The research has proved to be a good potential for monitoring lentic water quality through Sentinel-2 MSI.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from Baiyang Lake, China

The issue of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been an environmental focus worldwide. In this study, the contents, sources, and ecological risks of sixteen PAHs in the sediment of Baiyang Lake were estimated, and a list of priority pollutants was established. The total PAH contents ranged from 114 to 1010 ng·g-1. The composition of PAHs indicated that 4- to 6-ring PAHs predominated in the sediment samples. The diagnostic ratio analysis showed that combustion sources were predominant for PAHs in Baiyang Lake. Specifically, the positive matrix factorization model indicated that diesel engine emissions, gasoline engine emissions, wood combustion sources, and coal combustion sources contributed 22, 32, 24, and 22% of ∑PAHs, respectively. Based on the sediment quality guidelines, mean effects range median quotient, ecological risk quotient, and toxicity equivalent quotient methods, the comprehensive assessment results of PAHs in Baiyang Lake sediments indicated that the ecological risks were at medium and low levels. The priority pollutant list showed that benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene were the highest-priority pollutants and thus should be given more attention.

Dissent in the sediment? Lake sediments as archives of short- and long-range impact of anthropogenic activities in northeastern Germany

The suitability of lake sediment cores to reconstruct past inputs, regional pollution, and usage patterns of pesticides has been shown previously. Until now, no such data exist for lakes in eastern Germany. Therefore, 10 sediment cores (length 1 m) of 10 lakes in eastern Germany, the territory of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), were collected and cut into 5-10-mm layers. In each layer, concentrations of trace elements (TEs) As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, S, and Zn, as well as of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), i.e., dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), were analyzed. A miniaturized solid-liquid extraction technique in conjunction with headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for the latter. The progression of TE concentrations over time is uniform. It follows a trans-regional pattern and is indicative of activity and policy making in West Germany before 1990 instead of those in the GDR. Of OCPs, only transformation products of DDT were found. Congener ratios indicate a mainly aerial input. In the lakes' profiles, several regional features and responses to national policies and measures are visible. Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) concentrations reflect the history of DDT use in the GDR. Lake sediments proved to be suitable to archive short- and long-range impacts of anthropogenic activity. Our data can be used to complement and validate other forms of environmental pollution long-term monitoring and to check for the efficiency of pollution countermeasures in the past.

Occurrence, distribution and their correlation with different parameters of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in lakes of China: A review

The exposure of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as potential threats to the environment has raised global concern. This study provides discussion on the emergence and distribution of antibiotics and ARGs in lakes. The correlation of critical water quality parameters with antibiotics and ARGs are evaluated along with their integrative potential ecological risk. Sulfonamides (∼67.18 ng/L) and quinolones (∼77.62 ng/L) were the dominant antibiotics distributed in the aqueous phase, while the quinolones and tetracyclines were the primary contamination factors in the sediment phase. The temporal and spatial distribution revealed that the antibiotic concentrations were significantly lower in summer than other seasons and the lakes in Hebei and Jiangsu provinces exhibited the highest antibiotic pollution. The detection frequency and relative abundance of sul1 gene have been the highest among all detected ARGs. Moreover, ARGs in lakes were driven by several factors, with bacterial communities and mobile genetic elements that prevailed the positive distribution of ARGs. Antibiotics have been identified as critical factors in inducing the propagation of ARGs, which could be further enhanced by chemical contaminants (e.g., heavy metals and nutrients). Involving the risk assessment strategies, research attention should be paid on three antibiotics (ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin) to strengthen the policy and management of Baiyangdian Lake and East Dongting Lake. This review analysis will provide in-depth understanding to the researchers and policy-makers in formulation of strategies for remediation of antibiotic contamination in the lakes.

Characteristics of antibiotic resistance genes and microbial community distribution in Wanfeng Lake, upper Pearl River, China

Wanfeng Lake, a highland lake in the upper part of the Pearl River Basin, China, has long been disturbed by aquaculture and human activities, resulting in the accumulation of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which pose a major threat to humans and animals. In this study, 20 antibiotics, 9 ARGs, 2 mobile genetic elements (intl1 and intl2), and microbial community structure were investigated in Wanfeng Lake. The results of the study showed that the total concentration of antibiotics in surface water was 372.72 ng/L, with ofloxacin (OFX) having the highest concentration (169.48 ng/L), posing a high ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The total concentration of antibiotics in sediments was 235.86 ng/g, with flumequine (FLU) having the highest concentration (122.54 ng/g). This indicates that the main type of antibiotics in Wanfeng Lake are quinolones. QPCR analysis results of the relative abundance of ARGs in both surface water and sediments showed that sulfonamide resistance genes > macrolide resistance genes > tetracycline resistance genes > quinolone resistance genes, indicating that sulfonamide resistance genes were the dominant type. The metagenomic results showed that the predominant microorganisms in the sediment under the phylum level were Planctomycetes, Proteobacteria, Euryarchaeota, and Chloroflexi. Pearson's correlation analysis showed a significantly positive correlation between antibiotics and environmental factors with ARGs in Wanfeng Lake and a significant positive correlation between antibiotics and ARGs with microorganisms in sediments. This suggests that there is a potential pressure of antibiotics on ARGs, while microorganisms provide the driving force for the evolution and spread of ARGs. This study provides a basis for further research on the occurrence and spread of antibiotics and ARGs in Wanfeng Lake. A total of 14 antibiotics were detected in surface water and sediments. OFX poses a high ecological risk in all points of surface water. Antibiotics and ARGs were significantly positively correlated in Wanfeng Lake. Antibiotics and ARGs in sediments were positively correlated with microorganisms.

Mercury accumulation potential of aquatic plant species in West Dongting Lake, China

West Dongting Lake is a protected wetland with the potential for high levels of mercury release via wastewater and deposition from industry and agriculture during the last decade. To find out the ability of various plant species to accumulate mercury pollutants from soil and water, nine sites were studied in the downstream direction of the flow of the Yuan and Li Rivers, which are tributaries of the Yellow River flowing into West Dongting Lake, where mercury levels arere high in soil and plant tissues. The total mercury (THg) concentration in wetland soil was 0.078-1.659 mg/kg, which varied along the gradient of water flow along the river. According to canonical correspondence analysis and correlation analysis, there was a positive correlation between the soil THg concentration and the soil moisture in West Dongting Lake. There is high heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of soil THg concentration in West Dongting Lake, which may be related to the spatial heterogeneity of the soil moisture. Some plant species had higher THg concentrations in aboveground tissues (translocation factor >1), but none of these plant species fit the criteria as hyperaccumulators of mercury. And some species of the same ecological type (e.g., emergent, submergent, floating-leaved) exhibited very different strategies for mercury uptake. The concentrations of mercury in these species were lower than in other studies but these had relatively higher translocation factors. To phytoremediate soil mercury in West Dongting Lake, the regular harvest of plants could help remove mercury from soil and plant tissue.

Vertical distribution of plutonium isotopes from the floodplain and lacustrine sediments in Poyang Lake, China

Anthropogenic radionuclides deposited in sediments have been used for environmental radiation risk valuation as well as source identification. In this study, we investigated the vertical distribution of plutonium (Pu) isotopes and ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratios in both floodplain and lacustrine sediments in Poyang Lake. The ^239+240Pu activity concentrations in floodplain sediment cores were found to range from 0.002 to 0.085 Bq kg^-1, with a maximum value at the subsurface layer. The activity in lacustrine sediment cores was from 0.062 to 0.351 Bq kg^-1 with a mean of 0.138 ± 0.053 Bq kg^-1. The inventory of 43.15 Bq m^-2 in lacustrine sediment core is comparable to the average value of global fallout expected at the same latitude. The average ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atomic ratios (0.183 ± 0.032) for sediment cores indicated that the global fallout is the major source of Pu in the studied region. The results are of great significance to the further understanding of sources, records, and environmental impacts of regional nuclear activities in the environment.

Spatial distribution of arsenic and metals suggest a high ecotoxicological potential in Puno Bay, Lake Titicaca, Peru

Spatial distribution and interpolation methods provide a summarized overview about the pollution dispersion, concerning the environment's quality. A high-altitude lake was taken as a model to assess the metalloid As and metals Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn distribution in superficial sediment and classify them according to their ecotoxicological potential in the aquatic environment. Surface sediments were collected from 11 sites along Puno Bay located at the western area of Lake Titicaca, Peru, and analyzed for pseudo total-metals. Sediment concentration data and quality were plotted using the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) as an interpolation method. High concentrations of As were found especially in the outer bay (81.73 mg.kg^-1). Spatial heterogeneity was evidenced for metal by the coefficient of variation, although no significative differences were observed between the two bays applying a Kruskall Wallis test (p < 0.05, df = 1). Sediment quality classification showed that most metal values were below TEL and toxicity was unlikely to occur, only As exceeded threefold PEL values, which categorized sediment as "Very Bad", indicating a rather high ecotoxicological potential to the aquatic environment. In conclusion, spatial analysis connected to interpolation methods demonstrated the superficial sediment heterogeneity in Puno Bay.

Photoinduced production of substances with humic-like fluorescence, upon irradiation of water samples from alpine lakes

Evidence is here provided that irradiation of some lake water samples can trigger the formation of fluorophores with humic-like properties, at the same time increasing water absorbance. This phenomenon is the opposite of photobleaching, which is often observed when natural waters are irradiated. The photoproduced humic-like fluorophores observed here would be of autochthonous rather than allochthonous origin, which marks a difference with the fraction of humic substances that derives from terrestrial sources. Photogeneration of humic-like compounds can be highlighted in water samples where the fluorescence signal of initially occurring humic substances is low, so that their photobleaching is minimised. Samples that are most likely to show photoinduced formation of humic-like fluorophores are in fact characterised by high values of protein-like vs. humic-like contribution ratios to fluorescence, as evidenced by parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. Mountain lakes in late summer appear to be suitable candidates to highlight the described phenomenon. In some cases, lake-water irradiation caused a decrease in the spectral slope of the absorbance that, together with increasing absorbance values, is consistent with an increase in molecular mass and aromaticity of organic matter. The absorbance increase triggered by irradiation might play a role in screening biologically harmful UV radiation, in mountain environments that would otherwise be characterised by very clear water that allows for easy transmission of UV light along the water column.

Ozonation of lake water and wastewater: Identification of carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl-containing oxidation byproducts by non-target screening

Ozonation of drinking water and wastewater is accompanied by the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as low molecular weight aldehydes and ketones from the reactions of ozone with dissolved organic matter (DOM). By applying a recently developed non-target workflow, 178 carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl compounds were detected during bench-scale ozonation of two lake waters and three secondary wastewater effluent samples and full-scale ozonation of secondary treated wastewater effluent. An overlapping subset of carbonyl compounds (20%) was detected in all water types. Moreover, wastewater effluents showed a significantly higher fraction of N-containing carbonyl compounds (30%) compared to lake water (17%). All carbonyl compounds can be classified in 5 main formation trends as a function of increasing specific ozone doses. Formation trends upon ozonation and comparison of results in presence and absence of the ^•OH radical scavenger DMSO in combination with kinetic and mechanistic information allowed to elucidate potential carbonyl structures. A link between the detected carbonyl compounds and their precursors was established by ozonating six model compounds (phenol, 4-ethylphenol, 4-methoxyphenol, sorbic acid, 3-buten-2-ol and acetylacetone). About one third of the detected carbonous carbonyl compounds detected in real waters was also detected by ozonating model compounds. Evaluation of the non-target analysis data revealed the identity of 15 carbonyl compounds, including hydroxylated aldehydes and ketones (e.g. hydroxyacetone, confidence level (CL) = 1), unsaturated dicarbonyls (e.g. acrolein, CL = 1; 2-butene-1,4-dial, CL = 1; 4-oxobut-2-enoic acid, CL = 2) and also a nitrogen-containing carbonyl compound (2-oxo-propanamide, CL =1). Overall, this study shows the formation of versatile carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl compounds upon ozonation involving ozone and ^•OH reactions. Carbonyl compounds with unknown toxicity might be formed, and it could be demonstrated that acrolein, malondialdehyde, methyl glyoxal, 2-butene-1,4-dial and 4-oxo-pentenal are degraded during biological post-treatment.

A Tiered Ecological Risk Assessment of Caffeine by Using Species Sensitivity Distribution Method in the Nansi Lake Basin

Caffeine has been reported toxic to aquatic organisms, and it frequently occurs at relatively high concentrations in most of surface waters. However, it is difficult to control caffeine pollution because of the lack of Water Quality Criteria (WQC). In this study, species sensitivity distribution method and Log-normal model were applied to derive caffeine WQC as 83.7 ng/L. Meanwhile, concentrations of caffeine in the Nansi Lake basin were detected in 29 sampling sites, with the mean of 99.3 ng/L. The levels of caffeine in tributaries were higher than those in the lakes. In addition, a tied ecological risk assessment method was applied to assess the adverse effect of caffeine on aquatic system. The joint probability curve indicated that ecological risk might exist 3.1% of surface water in the study area, while 5% threshold (HC₅) was set up to protect aquatic species. Generally, caffeine posted a low risk to aquatic organisms in the Nansi Lake basin.

Hydrological Controls on Dissolved Organic Matter Composition throughout the Aquatic Continuum of the Watershed of Selin Co, the Largest Lake on the Tibetan Plateau

Alpine river and lake systems on the Tibetan Plateau are highly sensitive indicators and amplifiers of global climate change and important components of the carbon cycle. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) encompasses organic carbon in aquatic systems, yet knowledge about DOM variation throughout the river-lake aquatic continuum within alpine regions is limited. We used optical spectroscopy, ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry), and stable water isotopic measurements to evaluate linkages between DOM composition and hydrological connection. We investigated glacial influences on DOM composition throughout the watershed of Selin Co, including upstream glacier-fed rivers and downstream-linked lakes. We found that the dissolved organic carbon concentration increased, whereas specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA₂₅₄) decreased along the river-lake continuum. Relative to rivers, the downstream lakes had low relative abundances of polyphenolic and condensed aromatic compounds and humic-like substances but increased relative abundances of aliphatics and protein-like compounds. SUVA₂₅₄ decreased while protein-like components increased with enriched stable water isotope δ²H-H₂O, indicating that DOM aromaticity declined while autochthonous production increased along the flow paths. Glacier meltwater contributed to elevated relative abundances of aliphatic and protein-like compounds in headwater streams, while increased relative abundances of aromatics and humic-like DOM were found in glacier-fed lakes than downstream lakes. We conclude that changes in hydrological conditions, including glacier melt driven by a warming climate, will significantly alter DOM composition and potentially their biogeochemical function in surface waters on the Tibetan Plateau.
