Outbreak of Oleander ( Nerium oleander) Poisoning in Dairy Cattle: Clinical and Food Safety Implications. Toxins (Basel) 2020; 12:toxins12080471. Abstract
Oleander is a spontaneous shrub widely occurring in Mediterranean regions. Poisoning is sporadically reported in livestock, mainly due to the ingestion of leaves containing toxic cardiac glycosides (primarily oleandrin). In this study, 50 lactating Fleckvieh cows were affected after being offered a diet containing dry oleander pruning wastes accidentally mixed with fodder. Clinical examination, electrocardiogram, and blood sampling were conducted. Dead animals were necropsied, and heart, liver, kidney, spleen, and intestine were submitted to histological investigation. Oleandrin detection was performed through ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in blood, serum, liver, heart, milk, and cheese samples. Severe depression, anorexia, ruminal atony, diarrhea, serous nasal discharge, tachycardia, and irregular heartbeat were the most common clinical signs. The first animal died within 48 h, and a total of 13 cows died in 4 days. Disseminated hyperemia and hemorrhages, multifocal coagulative necrosis of the cardiac muscle fibers, and severe and diffuse enteritis were suggestive of oleander poisoning. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of oleandrin in serum, liver, heart, milk, and cheese. Our results confirm the high toxicity of oleander in cattle and report for the first time the transfer into milk and dairy products, suggesting a potential risk for the consumers.

Zusammenfassung. Wir präsentieren den Fall einer 23-jährigen Patientin, die in suizidaler Absicht Blätter des Roten Fingerhutes sammelte und einnahm. Trotz Einnahme einer relevanten Dosis hatte sie jedoch nur geringe Symptome. Intoxikationen mit Herzglykosiden sind selten, können aber relevante Herzrhythmusstörungen verursachen. Die einzige wirksame Behandlung stellt die frühzeitige und ggf. prophylaktische Gabe von digitalisspezifischen Fab-Antikörpern dar.

Abstract
Deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) intoxication has been infrequently reported in both children and adults in the literature. In this article, the clinical and laboratory findings of 49 children with acute deadly nightshade intoxication are reviewed. Our purpose was to enlighten the findings of deadly nightshade intoxication in childhood. The most common observed symptoms and signs were meaningless speech, tachycardia, mydriasis, and flushing. None of the children required mechanical ventilation or died in our series. The patients were categorized into two groups, mild/moderate and severe intoxication. Children with and without encephalopathy were accepted as severe and mild/moderate intoxication, respectively. While 43 children were placed in the group of mild/moderate intoxication, six were in severe intoxication group. We found that meaningless speech, lethargy, and coma were more common, but tachycardia was less common in the severe intoxication group (children with encephalopathy) (P B-0.05). In the treatment, neostigmine was used in all children because of no available physostigmine in our country. In conclusion, our findings showed that the initial signs and symptoms of acute deadly nightshade intoxication might be severe in some children, but no permanent sequel and death were seen in children. We also showed that meaningless speech, lethargy, coma, and absence of tachycardia were ominous signs in deadly nightshade intoxication in childhood. Lastly, we suggest that neostigmine may be used in cases of deadly nightshade intoxication if physostigmine cannot be available.

Abstract
Locoweed poisoning has been reported in wildlife, but it is unknown whether mule deer ( Odocoileius hemionus)are susceptible. In areas that are heavily infested with locoweed, deer and elk ( Cervus elaphus nelsoni)have developed a spongiform encephalopathy, chronic wasting disease (CWD). Although these are distinct diseases, no good comparisons are available. The purpose of this study was to induce and describe chronic locoweed poisoning in deer and compare it with the lesions of CWD. Two groups of four mule deer were fed either a complete pelleted ration or a similar ration containing 15% locoweed ( Oxytropis sericea). Poisoned deer lost weight and developed a scruffy, dull coat. They developed reluctance to move, and movement produced subtle intention tremors. Poisoned deer had extensive vacuolation of visceral tissues, which was most severe in the exocrine pancreas. Thyroid follicular epithelium, renal tubular epithelium, and macrophages in many tissues were mildly vacuolated. The exposed deer also had mild neuronal swelling and cytoplasmic vacuolation that was most obvious in Purkinje cells. Axonal swelling and dystrophy was found in many white tracts, but it was most severe in the cerebellar peduncles and the gracilis and cuneate fasciculi. These findings indicate that deer are susceptible to locoweed poisoning, but the lesions differ in severity and distribution from those of other species. The histologic changes of locoweed poisoning are distinct from those of CWD in deer; however, the clinical presentation of locoweed poisoning in deer is similar. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies are required for a definitive diagnosis.

Abstract
A sensitive and specific method for aconitine extraction from biological samples was developed. Aconitine, the main toxic alkaloid from plants belonging to Aconitum species (family Ranunculaceae), was determined in plant material by an external standard method, and by a standard addition calibration method in biological fluids. Described here is one fatal case and five intoxications of accidental aconitine poisoning following the ingestion of aconite mistaken for an edible grass, Aruncus dioicus (Walt.) Fernald, "mountain asparagus", and Cicerbita alpina (L.) Wallroth. The aconitine content in urine was in the range 2.94 microg/mL (dead patient)-0.20 microg/mL (surviving patients), which was almost two to four times higher than that in plasma.

Abstract
1,8-Cineole (cineole) is a Eucalyptus leaf toxin that defends against predation by herbivores such as the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). The aim of the current study was to characterize the pharmacokinetics of cineole in the possum to improve understanding about how possums can avoid cineole toxicity when eating a Eucalyptus diet. Nine male possums were trapped in the wild and acclimated to captivity; a subcutaneous port was then implanted for venous blood sampling. Cineole was administered intravenously (10 and 15 mg kg(-1)) via a lateral tail vein and orally (30, 100 and 300 mg kg(-1)) by gavage, and blood concentrations of cineole and its metabolites were determined by gas chromatography. Cineole had a large terminal volume of distribution (V(z) = 27 l kg(-1)) and a high clearance (43 ml min(-1) kg(-1)), equal to hepatic blood flow. The terminal half-life was approximately 7 h. Oral bioavailability was low (F = 0.05) after low doses, but increased tenfold with dose, probably due to saturable first-pass metabolism. These findings indicate that when possums feed on a cineole diet, they eat until the cineole consumed is sufficient to saturate pre-systemic metabolism, leading to a rapid rise in bioavailability and cineole blood levels, and a cessation of the feeding bout. This is the first report on the pharmacokinetics of a dietary toxin in a wild herbivore, and provides insights into the interactions between the blood concentration of a plant secondary metabolite and the browsing behaviour of a herbivore.

Abstract
A dense population of Pimelea trichostachya plants (Family Thymelaeaceae) in pasture poisoned a horse herd in southern inland Queensland in October-November 2005. Plant density was 2 to 45 g wet weight/m(2) (mean 16 g/m(2)) from 5 to 69 plants/m(2) (mean 38 plants/m(2)) representing 3 to 20% (mean 9%) of the volume of pasture on offer. Ten of 35 mares, fillies and geldings were affected. Clinical signs were loss of body weight, profound lethargy, serous nasal discharge, severe watery diarrhoea and subcutaneous oedema of the intermandibular space, chest and ventral midline. Pathological findings were anaemia, leucocytopenia, hypoproteinaemia, dilatation of the right ventricle of the heart, dilated hepatic portal veins and periportal hepatic sinusoids (peliosis hepatis), alimentary mucosal hyperaemia and oedema of mesenteric lymph nodes. Cattle grazing the same pasture were affected by Pimelea poisoning simultaneously. Removal of the horses to Pimelea-free pasture initiated recovery. The one other incident of this syndrome, previously only recognised in cattle in Australia, occurred in horses, in South Australia in 2002, with access to a dense Pimelea simplex population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ingestion of wilted red maple leaves by horses can result in severe hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia. Little is known about what factors influence the outcome of red maple leaf toxicosis in horses. HYPOTHESIS Our hypothesis was that physical examination findings, clinicopathologic variables or therapeutic modalities may predict outcome in horses with red maple leaf toxicity. ANIMALS Horses with red maple leaf toxicosis presented to referral hospitals in the southeast region of the United States. METHODS A multi-institutional retrospective study was designed to identify factors that predict mortality in horses with red maple toxicosis. RESULTS Thirty-two horses with red maple toxicosis were identified, 19 of which died. Twenty-nine horses presented with anemia and 24 had clinicopathologic evidence of systemic inflammation. Renal insufficiency was identified in 12/30 (41%) horses. Laminitis (9/28) and colic (13/30) also were identified in horses with red maple toxicosis, but development of these 2 conditions did not have a negative effect on short-term survival. Horses with red maple toxicosis that survived to discharge were likely to have developed pyrexia during hospitalization (P = .030). Horses that were treated with a corticosteroid had a significantly increased likelihood of death (P = .045). There was no significant relationship between initial serum hemoglobin concentration, methemoglobin concentration, or percentage methemoglobin and mortality in this horse series. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE This study suggests that information obtained on initial examination cannot be used to accurately predict survival in horses with red maple toxicosis, but horses that receive corticosteroids are unlikely to survive.

Abstract
Monitoring of changes in some blood laboratory parameters in 34 horses after ingesting freshly harvested maize that was to be used for ensiling, heavily contaminated with young Datura stramonium plants, is described. For a 7-day period the following parameters were monitored: haemoglobin content (HGB), red blood cell counts (RBC), white blood cell counts (WBC), haematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), differential white cell counts (DWC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), protein fractions, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total bilirubin (TB), direct bilirubin (DB), blood glucose (Glu), total protein (TP), globulin (Glob) and albumin (Alb). The intoxication was accompanied by erythrocytosis, leukocytosis, regenerative left shift neutrophilia, lymphopaenia, eosinopaenia, increased haematocrit values, low erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hyperglycaemia, bilirubinaemia, hypoproteinaemia and increased activity of AST and LDH. No changes occurred in the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), albumin, globulin and globulin fractions (alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1, beta 2 and gamma). The blood parameters returned to normal between post-intoxication days 2 and 5. The observed changes in clinical chemistry indices could be used in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and prognosis of Jimson weed intoxication.

Abstract
We studied the frequency and timing of abortion and the serum levels of 17beta-estradiol and progesterone in Korean native cows fed pine needles during pregnancy. Fifteen pregnant cows were randomly assigned to groups of 5. The control group was fed a concentrate and rice straw, and the other 2 groups were fed, in addition, either 1.3 or 2.7 kg (dry weight) of Korean pine needles daily, starting at an average of 91 d of gestation and continuing until 245 d of gestation. The health status of the dams and the viability of the fetuses were ascertained by rectal palpation and ultrasound scanning during pregnancy. Simultaneously, blood samples were collected for analysis of serum 17beta-estradiol and progesterone. Two abortions in mid-pregnancy (at 126 and 150 d of gestation) occurred in the group ingesting the higher daily amount of pine needles. Premature parturition occurred at 259 d of gestation in this group and at 241 and 252 d of gestation in the group ingesting the lower daily amount of pine needles. The serum 17beta-estradiol concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.05) at 4 mo of gestation and the serum progesterone level significantly lower (P < 0.05) at 8 mo of gestation in the group ingesting more pine needles daily than in either of the other 2 groups. These results suggest that the ingestion of pine needles may play a role in abortion in Korean native cows by increasing the serum 17beta-estradiol concentration and decreasing the serum progesterone concentration.

Abstract
We studied the effects of Narthecium ossifragum on goat kidneys. Twenty-five Norwegian dairy goats, 5 weeks to 4 months of age, were orally dosed with an aqueous extract from N. ossifragum. In experiment 1, we studied microscopic and functional changes in 12 animals that were euthanatized 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 days after treatment. In experiment 2, we included ultrastructural studies on serial renal biopsies and urine analysis from five extract-treated animals and two controls. In addition, urine samples were collected from four dosed and two control goats. Ultrasonography revealed perirenal and retroperitoneal fluids. Microscopic changes were observed after 6 hours. The findings, most obvious in the inner cortex and the outer medulla, consisted of cytoplasmic vacuolization, interstitial edema, and focal necrosis of tubular epithelial cells. Ultrastructurally, the tubules had loss of microvilli, irregular cytoplasmic vacuolization, mitochondrial swelling with loss of cristae, and irregular but continuous basement membranes even with necrosis. In the glomeruli, there were occasional endothelial damage and shortening and swelling of the foot processes. Peritubular capillaries had breaks in the vessel walls and irregular endothelial cell edema, and the interstitium had marked edema. The functional lesions included elevated serum urea, creatinine, and magnesium concentrations, a slight decrease in serum calcium concentration, elevated urine protein and urine protein-creatinine ratio, and increased activities of urine alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyl transferase. Our findings indicate a fast-acting toxic principle inducing damage by both direct toxic and secondary ischemic effects.

Appearance and disappearance of swainsonine in serum and milk of lactating ruminants with nursing young following a single dose exposure to swainsonine (locoweed; Oxytropis sericea). Abstract
A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the elimination of swainsonine in the milk of lactating ruminants following a single dose oral exposure to swainsonine (locoweed; Oxytropis sericea) and to assess subsequent subclinical effects on the mothers and their nursing young. In a preliminary experiment, lactating ewes were gavaged with locoweed providing 0.8 mg swainsonine/kg BW (n = 4; BW = 75.8 +/- 3.6 kg; lactation = d 45) and lactating cows were offered up to 2.0 mg swainsonine/kg BW free choice (n = 16; BW = 389.6 +/- 20.9 kg; lactation = d 90). Serum and milk were collected at h 0 (before treatment), 3, 6, 12, and 24 for ewes, and h 0 (before treatment), 6, 12, 18, and 24 for cows. Swainsonine was highest (P < 0.05) by h 6 in the serum and milk of ewes. Consumption of at least 0.61 mg swainsonine/kg BW induced consistent (> 0.025 microg/mL) appearance of swainsonine in cow serum and milk. In response to the results obtained in the preliminary experiment, a subsequent experiment utilizing lactating ewes (n = 13; BW = 74.8 +/- 6.4 kg; lactation = d 30) and cows (n = 13; BW = 460.8 +/- 51.9 kg; lactation = d 90) was conducted. Each lactating ruminant was gavaged with a locoweed extract to provide 0 (control), 0.2, or 0.8 mg swainsonine/kg BW and individually penned with her nursing young. Serum and milk from the mothers and serum from the nursing young were collected at h 0 (before treatment), 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 48 (an additional sample was obtained at h 72 for ewes and lambs). Serum and milk swainsonine was higher (P < 0.05) in the 0.8 mg treated groups and maximal (P < 0.05) concentrations occurred from h 3 to 6 for ewes and h 6 to 12 h for cows (P < 0.05). Rises in alkaline phosphatase activity indicated subclinical toxicity in the treated ewes (P < 0.05). Following a single dose oral exposure to 0.2 and 0.8 mg swainsonine/kg BW provided by a locoweed extract, swainsonine was detected in the serum and milk of lactating ewes and cows, and rises in serum alkaline phosphatase activity were observed in the ewes. Neither swainsonine nor changes in alkaline phosphatase activity was detected in the serum of the lambs and calves nursing the ewes and cows dosed with swainsonine.

Abstract
The acute toxicity of dried Nerium oleander leaves to Najdi sheep is described in 12 sheep assigned as untreated controls, N. oleander-treated once at 1 and 0.25 g/kg body weight and N. oleander-treated daily at 0.06 g/kg body weight by drench. Single oral doses of 1 or 0.25 g of dried N. oleander leaves/kg body weight caused restlessness, chewing movements of the jaws, dyspnea, ruminal bloat, incoordination of movements, limb paresis, recumbency and death 4-24 hr after dosing. Lesions were widespread congestion or hemorrhage, pulmonary cyanosis and emphysema, hepatorenal fatty change and catarrhal abomasitis and enteritis. The daily oral doses of 0.06 g dried N. oleander leaves/kg body weight caused less severe signs and death occurred between days 3 and 14. In these animals, the main lesions were hepatonephropathy and gelatinization of the renal pelvis and mesentry and were accompanied by significant increases in serum AST and LDH activities, in bilirubin, cholesterol and urea concentrations and significant decreases in total protein and albumin levels, anemia and leucopenia.

Abstract
We present the first reported study of Ruta graveolens toxicity in 7-8-month-old Nubian goats. Oral administration of 5 g/kg bw per day of R. graveolens leaves caused tremor, dyspnoea, frequent urination, incoordination of movement, ataxia and recumbency, with death after 1-7 days. In goats receiving oral doses of 1 g/kg bw per day of the leaves, the course of toxicity was prolonged and the animals had pallor of the visible mucous membranes and loss in condition; one died on day 17, the others being slaughtered on days 41 and 46. The clinical effects were correlated with pathological changes in various organs, alterations in serum aspartate transaminase, creatine kinase, total protein, cholesterol, urea and other serum constituents, haematological values and the concentrations in the tissues of copper, iron, zinc, manganese, calcium and phosphorus.

Abstract
Epidemic dropsy results from the consumption of edible oils adulterated with Argemone mexicana oil by unscrupulous traders. Twenty consecutive 'in-door' patients of dropsy were intensively studied during the recent Delhi epidemic. Samples of edible oil used by them, their urine and their serum samples tested positive for sanguinarine on thin layer chromatography. The illness starts as a gastro-enteric illness followed by oliguria and pedal oedema. The following are often observed: cutaneous erythema with blanching and tenderness on pressure; violacious pigmentation of the skin; shortness of breath with orthopnoea; right-sided heart failure with normal left ventricle (LV) functions; as well as severe anaemia and hypoalbuminaemia. Renal function tests showed: bland urinary sediments; decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR); mild to moderate azotaemia; acute tubular necrosis; patchy pneumonitis; moderate hypoxia with respiratory alkalosis; and restrictive ventilatory defects on blood gas analysis; and spirometry suggestive of interstitial pulmonary oedema of non-cardiogenic origin. 99mTc colloid sulphur liver scans showed colloid shift. There was marked dilatation and proliferation of dermal capillaries in the absence of significant inflammation in the biopsy specimens. Toxic alkaloids of Argemone mexicana oil induce widespread capillary dilatation and permeability causing leakage of protein rich plasma into the interstitial tissues of various organs. A hypovolaemic state is thus induced producing renal hypoperfusion which may progress to acute tubular necrosis. Interstitial fluid in alveoli causes restrictive ventilatory dysfunction with hypertension and right-sided failure with well-preserved LV function. The hepatic venous congestion induces Kupffer's cell dysfunction, which results in colloid shift on a radionuclide liver scan.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test Solanum glaucophyllum calcinotic effects in adult New Zealand White rabbits in relation to cumulative dose and active principle concentration in plasma. DESIGN An intoxication assay with controls. PROCEDURE Rabbits were orally dosed with aqueous extracts of dry leaves of S glaucophyllum for 5, 7 or 9 days. During the experiment, body weight, calcaemia and phosphataemia were measured; retinal blood vessel calibre was observed by ophthalmoscopic examination of the ocular fundus. 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D plasma concentration was determined at the end of the experimental periods. Soft tissue calcium concentration and the presence of calcinotic lesions were studied after euthanasia. RESULTS Toxic effects were evident in S glaucophyllum treated groups (loss of body weight, elevation of soft tissue calcium concentration, and presence of calcinotic lesions). Plasma 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D concentrations were negatively correlated with final body weight (r = -0.97; P < or = 0.001), and positively correlated with renal calcium concentration (r = 0.74; P = 0.02). There was also a significant regression of plasma 1,25 (OH)2 vitamin D concentration on the cumulative dose of S glaucophyllum (R2 = 0.87; P < or = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The procedure described here offers a sensitive and practical experimental model for the study of the pathogenesis of enteque seco.

Abstract
The subacute dose-response effects of swainsonine (SW) consumption on immunocompetence and serum constituents of sheep in a nutrient-restricted state were investigated. Sheep (23 wethers, 5 ewes) were assigned to 1 of 5 SW treatments (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, or 1.6 mg swainsonine/ kg bw/d). Swainsonine was delivered by feeding locoweed (Oxytropis sericea) with grama grass and alfalfa hays for a 28-d treatment period followed by a 21-d recovery period without locoweed. Body weights were measured weekly and behavioral changes were monitored for clinical signs of SW toxicity. Venous blood was collected weekly for lymphoblastogenesis and serum constituent analyses. Clinical signs (sluggishness, decreased responsiveness) of swainsonine toxicity were observed from d 14 to 35 in the 0.8 and 1.6 mg treatments. Subacute oral exposure did not appear to affect lymphoblastogenic analyses. Acute and subacute alterations in various serum constituents did indicate subclinical effects of SW ingestion. Linear, quadratic and cubic dose-response relationships were detected for some serum constituents (e.g., alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase). Subacute SW consumption at the levels investigated does not seem to affect the immunocompetence of nutrient restricted sheep. The lack of change in serum alkaline phosphatase at the 0.2 mg SW/kg bw/d dose indicates the potential for a no adverse effect level of SW consumption in nutrient restricted sheep. In combination with measurable SW in serum, rises in serum alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, and declines in serum Fe and cholesterol during subacute exposure to SW establish these markers as potential indicators of subclinical SW toxicosis.

Abstract
The authors have reviewed the main toxic plants responsible for human deaths throughout the world. Forty plants (genera or species) were listed in order to establish an inventory of the active molecules that could be identified, the already published analytical methods and the reported human fatal cases. In a second step, the authors have developed a general method for the detection of various toxins in whole blood by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry or tandem mass spectrometry. Sample preparation was realized by liquid-liquid extraction at pH 9.5 for oleandrine, taxol and the alkaloids. These latter compounds were divided into two groups following their chemical properties and could be subsequently purified by acid/base clean up. Cyanogenic compounds and atractyloside were isolated by precipitation of the protein content with acetone and purified for atractyloside by washing with chloroform. Separation of the drugs occurred under reversed-phase conditions on a C18 analytical column 150x2 mm I.D. (5 microm particle size) using two different mobile phases. The first one, formiate buffer 2 mM acidified at pH 3.0, was used for the separation of atractyloside, oleandrine, taxol, the cyanogenic molecules and some alkaloids. The second mobile phase, formiate buffer 10 mM made basic at pH 8.2 was used for the majority of other alkaloids. A gradient elution mode was chosen using acetonitrile or acetonitrile-methanol (50:50, v/v) as the eluting solvent. Detection under positive ionization mode was the mode of choice for all compounds except for atractyloside (negative ions) and for taxol (mixed mode available). Application to real forensic cases has been demonstrated.

Abstract
Experimental studies with Bracken and Dryopteris ferns @ 25% concentrate ration mixture were conducted in rabbits. Fern fed rabbits showed progressive anaemia, leukopaenia, lymphopaenia and relative heterophilia. Significant elevations in serum enzymes like serum glutamate oxaloactate transminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea and creatinine levels were seen. Histopathologically, rabbits showed mild to moderate vascular changes in most of visceral organs, vacuolar degenerative changes in hepatocytes, hypersecretory activity in intestine, presence of casts in renal tubules and degenerative changes in renal tubular lining epithelial cells. Dryopteris fed rabbits showed somewhat more severe degenerative and vascular changes in different intervals. A low level of toxic principle ptaquiloside was detected in Bracken and Dryopteris ferns by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods.

Abstract
Twenty-six Holstein calves with clinical and pathological effects suggesting a toxic plant intoxication were studied. A view of the plants in the region and blood examination (hemogram, albumin, total protein, calcium and phosphorus) and determination of bone calcium were done. Five calves were slaughtered and pathological examinations were performed. Observed metabolic, pathological and clinical alterations were compatible with intoxication from Cestrum diurnum.

Saudi Rhazya stricta is used in folkloric medicine for the treatment of various disorders. R stricta leaves were fed to male Wistar albino rats at 2%, 10% or 50% of the diet for 6 w. Decreased growth rate, soft feces, dullness, ruffled hair and hepatonephrotoxicity were observed in rats on 10% and 50% Rhazya diet. Fifty percent Rhazya was fatal to rats, and hepatorenal lesions at 3 and 6 w confirmed changes in serum enzyme activity and in total protein, albumin, bilirubin and urea concentrations. Serum copper was decreased and zinc was increased in rats on 50% R stricta at 3 and 6 w, and were accompanied by anemia and neutropenia. Two percent Rhazya diet promoted growth as the plant leaves contained 28.3% crude protein and 16.6% crude fat and were not deficient in copper, zinc or iron.

Abstract
A probable outbreak of oak (Quercus calliprinos) toxicosis in a herd of beef cattle--heifers and first-calving cows--grazing in the Judean foothills of Israel is described. Toxicosis probably occurred because of the consumption of oak leaves and buds during a period of pasture scarcity without any feed supplementation. A progressive syndrome of wasting, dullness, anorexia, polyuria, nephrosis, constipation and recumbency, culminating in death, was seen. A high mortality rate of 83% (38/46 animals) was noted. The clinical-pathological findings revealed increases in blood urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and inorganic phosphorus. Decreases were found in alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total serum protein, albumin (ALB), triglyceride (TG), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and chloride (CI). The main pathological findings were severe nephrosis, chronic interstitial nephritis, and occasional intestinal ulceration. On the basis of epidemiology, clinical signs, clinical-pathological and pathological findings and renal histology, a tentative diagnosis of oak toxicosis was made.

Abstract
Two replicate trials determined the effects of dietary supplementation on snakeweed toxicity in beef cows of poor condition. Cows were stratified by weight and randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments. Dietary treatments were control (n = 3/trial; medium quality hay, 9.49% crude protein), corn supplementation (n = 3/trial; control diet + 628 g cracked corn), and protein supplementation (n = 3/trial; control diet + 800 g 42% protein supplement). Corn and protein dietary treatments were fed to be isocaloric. Each trial consisted of 2 phases (68 days/phase). Phase 1 consisted of dietary treatments without snakeweed. In phase 2 dietary treatments contained snakeweed as 10% of the dry matter. Phase 1 and 2 dietary treatments were isocaloric/isonitrogenous. Dry matter intake of the control diet was limited to 1.3% of body weight/d. Body condition score and back fat were measured on days 0, 21 and 68 of each phase. Serum samples were collected at the onset of each trial and on days 28, 42 and 56 of each phase. Serum bromosulphthalein (BSP) elimination half life (t1/2) was estimated during week 6 of each phase. Serum BSP elimination t1/2 was higher for the control diet versus corn and protein treatments. Increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was found by day 28 of phase 2. Serum total bilirubin increased by day 28 in phase 2 compared to baseline for the control and corn dietary treatments. Additionally, serum indirect bilirubin was higher by day 28 in phase 2. Likewise, serum direct bilirubin increased during phase 2 on day 28 in the corn diet, but decreased by day 28 for the protein diet. Alkaline phosphatase levels were higher (P < 0.05) in the controls by day 28, but lower in the protein treatment by day 28 in phase 2. Changes were noted during phase 2 for some of the serum clinical profiles; however, these changes appear due to dietary restriction. In contrast, changes during phase 2 point to possible hepatotoxic and renal toxic effects of snakeweed. Phase 2 data suggest a benefit of protein supplementation for improving animal tolerance to snakeweed.

Abstract
Myoporum laetum was collected in the counties of Rio Grande and Capao do Leao in winter and in Santa Vitoria in summer, autumn, winter and spring, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and in the Department of Rocha, Uruguay, in winter and spring. The fresh green leaves were fed to 16 calves. Two calves that ingested the plant from Capao do Leao at 40 and 44 g/kg bw did not develop clinical signs. The other 14 calves had depression, abdominal pain, ruminal atony, ocular and nasal serous discharge, and dry feces with blood and mucus. Four calves developed icterus. First signs appeared 24-72 h after ingestion, and clinical period varied from 2 to 7 d. One animal had mild photosensitization. Calves dosed with 20 g/kg of plant from Santa Vitoria and 40 g/kg of plant from Uruguay had less severe clinical signs. All cattle recovered except 1 dosed with 40 g/kg of plant collected in winter in Santa Vitoria; it died 70 h after ingestion. Histologic lesions in the liver of this animal and in biopsies obtained 48 h after dosing other calves had centrilobular necrosis, sometimes extending to the midzonal region. Clinical signs and hepatic lesions were also observed in a calf dosed with 5 daily doses at 8 g/kg. Serum AST, GGT and bilirubin were increased. M laetum from Santa Vitoria was the most toxic for cattle, and the plant from Uruguay was the least toxic, suggesting variations in toxicity among plants from different regions.

Abstract
Three red kangaroos (Megaleira rufus), an adult male, an adult female, and a yearling, were exposed in bedding and food to coastal bermuda hay that contained the toxic plant Lantana camara. The adult male exhibited signs of anorexia, depression, lethargy, and jaundice. The adult female was presented dead. After 1 wk, following exposure to sunlight, the adult male and a yearling joey developed exudative dermatitis of the ear margins, eyelids, muzzle, and scrotum and opacity of the corneas. The adult male had a leucocytosis, anemia, bilirubinemia, bilirubinuria, hyperproteinemia, and elevated alanine aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, alkaline phosphatase, and bile acid serum levels. Postmortem examination of the adult male revealed jaundice, and the liver was swollen, mottled, and pale yellow to reddish yellow. The gall bladder was markedly distended. Histopathologically, there was hepatocellular enlargement with vesiculation of the nuclei and sporadic feathery degeneration of the cytoplasm. The yearling joey survived and was treated symptomatically with i.v. fluids and antibiotics. The history, clinical signs, diagnostic findings, necropsy findings, and exposure to the toxic plant Lantana camara support the diagnosis of secondary photosensitization and hepatoxicity.

Abstract
Locoweed poisoning is seen throughout the world and annually costs the livestock industry millions of dollars. Swainsonine inhibits lysosomal alpha-mannosidase and Golgi mannosidase II. Poisoned animals are lethargic, anorexic, emaciated, and have neurologic signs that range from subtle apprehension to seizures. Swainsonine is water-soluble, rapidly absorbed, and likely to be widely distributed in the tissues of poisoned animals. The purpose of this study was to quantify swainsonine in tissues of locoweed-poisoned sheep and determine the rate of swainsonine clearance from animal tissues. Twenty-four crossbred wethers were gavaged with ground Oxytropis sericea to obtain swainsonine doses of 1 mg swainsonine x kg(-1) BW x d(-1) for 30 d. After dosing, the sheep were killed on d 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 14, 30, 60, and 160. Animal weights and feed consumption were monitored. Serum was collected during dosing and withdrawal periods, and tissues were collected at necropsy. Serum swainsonine concentrations were determined using an alpha-mannosidase inhibition assay. Swainsonine concentrations in skeletal muscle, heart, brain, and serum were similar at approximately 250 ng/g. Clearance from these tissues was also similar, with half-lives (T(1/2)) of less than 20 h. Swainsonine at more than 2,000 ng/g, was detected in the liver, spleen, kidney, and pancreas. Clearance from liver, kidney, and pancreas was about T(1/2) 60 h. These findings imply that poisoned sheep have significant tissue swainsonine concentrations and animals exposed to locoweed should be withheld from slaughter for at least 25 d (10 T(1/2)) to ensure that the locoweed toxin has cleared from animal tissues and products.

Abstract
Intoxication by Karwinskia humboldtiana presents a neurological picture similar to that for Guillain-Barré syndrome or other polyradiculoneuropathies. Clinical diagnosis in poisoned humans may be difficult if no evidence of previous fruit ingestion is available. We present our experience in the clinical diagnosis of Karwinskia humboldtiana polyneuropathy, as confirmed by toxin detection in blood. We designed an open trial at the Pediatric Neurology service and included all cases with acute ascending paralysis that were admitted to our hospital in the last two years. In all cases, we performed hematological, immunological and biochemical profiles, CSF analysis including immunological studies, oligoclonal bands and myelin basic protein determinations. Electrodiagnostic studies were performed, including motor conduction velocities, distal latencies, F-wave latency and compound muscle action potential (CAMP) amplitude. The presence of Karwinskia humboldtiana toxins in blood were determined by thin layer chromatography. In six cases, T-514 Karwinskia humboldtiana toxin was detected. These cases had a symmetric motor polyneuropathy with the absence of tendon reflexes and no sensory signs or cranial nerve involvement. Only one patient required assisted ventilation due to bulbar paralysis. In two of these cases, a sural nerve biopsy revealed a segmental demyelination with swelling and phagocytic chambers in Schwann cells and without lymphocytic infiltration. All six cases survived, with complete recovery in five. We conclude that this intoxication is common in Mexico. The availability of toxin detection in blood samples allows the clinician to establish an accurate diagnosis and should be included in the study of children with polyradiculoneuropathy, especially in countries where this poisonous plant grows.

Sixteen ram lambs (5 mo old, average BW = 49 +/- 1.4 kg) received a control diet (50% concentrate, 13.1% CP) or a diet containing 7, 14, or 21% locoweed (LW, DM basis). Rams were housed in individual pens (2.5 x 3.5 m) in an enclosed facility (14 h light, 10 h dark) with free access to feed and water. After 35 d of LW feeding, rams fed the 21% LW diet ate 1.3 to 1.6 kg/d, whereas rams fed the other three diets ate 1.6 to 2.0 kg/d. On d 35, BW (mean +/- SE) were 58.3, 57.2, 57.2, and 55.4 (+/- 1.5 kg/d) for ram lambs receiving 0, 7, 14, and 21% LW, respectively (P > .20). An inverse relationship for BW (P < .10) and gain (P = .04) was observed 1 mo after LW feeding ended relative to amount of LW in the diet. Serum alkaline phosphatase increased with increasing LW (P < .05), and thyroxine concentration was decreased (P < .05) by LW ingestion. On d 35, serum LH averaged 6.8, 9.9, 11.6, and 9.9 (+/- 1.8) ng/mL (P = .56), whereas testosterone averaged 3.5, 2.6, 3.0, and 1.6 (+/- .5) ng/mL (linear effect of LW, P = .05) over a 5-h period after GnRH injection (i.m., 50 microg) in lambs fed 0, 7, 14, and 21% locoweed, respectively. Semen volume, sperm motility, sperm cell concentration, and percentage of abnormal cells did not differ (P > .50) on d 35. One month after the end of LW feeding, a linear (P = .06) decrease in sperm motility and scrotal circumference was observed relative to percentage of prior dietary LW. These data suggest that LW exerts adverse effects on the testes of young rams that may not be evident until several weeks after LW consumption ends.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pennyroyal is a widely available herb that has long been used as an abortifacient despite its potentially lethal hepatotoxic effects. However, quantitative data for pennyroyal constituents and their metabolites in humans have not been previously reported. OBJECTIVES To quantify pennyroyal metabolites in human overdose, to correlate these findings with clinical variables, and to place these findings in the context of previously reported cases of pennyroyal toxicity. DESIGN Clinical case series of pennyroyal ingestions; quantification of pennyroyal metabolites by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry; qualitative detection of protein-bound adducts of the metabolites of pennyroyal constituents in human liver by Western blot assay; and review of the literature based on a search of MEDLINE, Index Medicus, and the reference citations of all available publications. RESULTS We report four cases of pennyroyal ingestion. One patient died, one received N-acetylcysteine, and two ingested minimally toxic amounts of pennyroyal and were not treated with N-acetylcysteine. In the fatal case, postmortem examination of a serum sample, which had been obtained 72 hours after the acute ingestion, identified 18 ng of pulegone per mL and 1 ng of menthofuran per mL. In a serum sample from the patient treated with N-acetylcysteine, which had been obtained 10 hours after ingestion, the menthofuran level was 40 ng/mL. Review of 18 previous case reports of pennyroyal ingestion documented moderate to severe toxicity in patients who had been exposed to at least 10 mL of pennyroyal oil. CONCLUSION Pennyroyal continues to be an herbal toxin of public health importance. Data on human metabolites may provide new insights into the toxic mechanisms and treatment of pennyroyal poisoning, including the potential role of N-acetylcysteine. Better understanding of the toxicity of pennyroyal may also lead to stricter control of and more restricted access to the herb.

Twelve Hereford steers (average BW = 231 kg) that had previously grazed native rangeland (Range) or irrigated winter wheat pasture (Wheat) were allowed to graze locoweed-infested rangeland from April 1 to June 9, 1994 (six steers/previous grazing treatment). Relative consumption level of locoweed and other forage classes was measured as observed bites per steer. Liver biopsy and whole blood samples were obtained from each steer before and after grazing. Liver samples were analyzed for several minerals by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, and whole blood samples were analyzed for Se. Liver concentrations of Ba (P < .001), Cd (P < .001), Ca (P < .01), Cr (P < .01), Ni (P < .001), Na (P < .01), and V (P < .001) were greater and concentrations of Mn (P < .09), P (P < .01), and K (P < .07) were less in Wheat than in Range steers. Liver concentrations of Fe, Mg, S, and Zn and whole blood Se concentrations did not differ (P > .10) between the two groups. Liver concentrations of Cr (P < .04) and Mn (P < .001) were less, and Fe concentrations were greater (P < .01), in samples taken after grazing than in samples taken before grazing of locoweed-infested range. Whole blood Se concentrations decreased (P < .01) from the beginning to the end of the grazing period, but this effect was not related (P > .15) to locoweed consumption. Changes in liver concentrations of minerals were compared relative to consumption levels of all forage classes in the locoweed-infested range. Liver concentrations of Cu decreased (r2 = .45; P < .02) as the percentage of bites consumed as locoweed increased, but concentrations after grazing locoweed-infested range were still within normal ranges. Changes in liver concentrations of other minerals were not related (P > .15) to consumption of locoweed. These data indicate that previous grazing history can have significant effects on liver mineral stores and that, under our conditions, consumption of locoweed by grazing beef steers altered liver Cu concentrations. Toxic effects of locoweed consumption would likely occur before Cu deficiency would be induced by grazing locoweed-infested range; hence, supplementation of Cu would seem unlikely to alter the course of locoweed toxicosis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether hematological and serum biochemical parameters could be used to diagnose poisoning in cattle grazing timber milkvetch (Astragalus miser var. serotinus), a nitropropanol-containing legume. Blood samples were obtained from 20 Hereford cattle on timber milkvetch range in southern British Columbia during 1992 and 1993. Relevant changes in blood parameters were not detected and the parameters could not be used to predict nitropropanol ingestion or intoxication. The same parameters were measured in dosing trials with cattle with rumen fistulas, but relevant changes were not detected. Succinate dehydrogenase is the key target in nitropropanol intoxication and an assay for this enzyme may provide a probe for diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adult intoxications due to ingestion of deadly nightshade berries is uncommon. CASE REPORTS Collective intoxication of eight persons occurred after accidental ingestion of ripened Atropa belladonna berries. Three of the four adults displayed delirious states with visual hallucinations; one patient fell into a coma and required mechanical ventilation. Four children and one adult exhibited mild peripheral anticholinergic symptoms. Kinetic data were obtained on the three hospitalized adults. DISCUSSION The optimal intensive care for such patients is discussed.

Abstract
Three calves received 10 g Riedeliella graciflora dry leaves/kg body weight by gavage. Blood samples were taken immediately before plant administration and at 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 hours later; serum ALT, AST, AP, TB, urea and creatinine were determined. After R graciflora administration, the calves had anorexia, profound depression and recumbency prior to death. Creatinine levels increased markedly until death. Severe tubular nephrosis was consistently observed.

Abstract
Serum alpha-mannosidase activity and swainsonine concentration were determined in 4 cattle and 15 sheep (3 groups of 5 each) that were administered ground locoweed (Oxytropis sericea or Astragalus lentiginosus) containing swainsonine at dosages of approximately 0.8 mg/kg of body weight/d (cows, 30 days each) and 0, 1.0, and 1.5 mg/kg/d (sheep, 11 days each). The cattle developed mild clinical signs of locoism, including signs of depression, lethargy, and slight intention tremors. Clinical signs of toxicosis were not observed in the sheep. Within 24 hours of initial treatment, serum alpha-mannosidase activity in cows and sheep, measured by the release of 4-methylumbelliferone from an artificial substrate, was markedly decreased to 28 and 40 mumol of 4-methylumbelliferone/L, respectively. Mean serum alpha-mannosidase activity of control cows and sheep was 400 +/- 94 and 422 +/- 42 (mean +/- SD), respectively. In the treated animals, decreased serum alpha-mannosidase activities returned to normal or higher activities within 6 days after treatment was discontinued. Using a jack bean alpha-mannosidase assay, increased swainsonine activity (153, 209, and 381 ng/ml, respectively) was detected in the serum of cattle and of sheep in the high- and low-dose groups within 24 hours after treatment with locoweed. Swainsonine concentration remained high, with mean concentrations of 204, 432, and 395 ng/ml (cows and 2 sheep groups, respectively) during the treatment period. After treatment, swainsonine was rapidly cleared, with estimated serum half-life of 16.4, 17.6, and 20.3 hours (cows, and high- and low-dose sheep groups, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Subclinical intoxication of livestock with Astragalus and Oxytropis species (locoweeds) results in decreased animal feed conversion, reduced weight gains, and reproductive failure. Sensitive diagnostic methods to definitively diagnose and monitor intoxication are needed to minimize these losses and better manage locoweed-infested pastures and rangelands. Sera from cattle grazing locoweed were evaluated for alpha-mannosidase activity, serum biochemical values, electrolytes, and thyroid hormone concentrations. As the cows began to ingest locoweed, the mean serum alpha-mannosidase activities dropped significantly (400.0 microM to 72.5 microM). Changes in other serum chemistry values were less specific; however, individual animals (generally those ingesting more locoweed) had elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase, and lactate dehydrogenase, with decreased serum total protein (5.8 +/- 0.8 g/dl) and albumin (2.3 +/- 0.3 g/dl). Mean serum thyroid concentrations (both T4 and T3) were lower in animals that were ingesting locoweed. The calculated swainsonine dose correlated statistically with serum alpha-mannosidase activity, ALP, albumin, Cl, CO2, and thyroid hormone T3. This correlation suggests that serum alpha-mannosidase activity along with potential changes in ALP, albumin, and thyroid hormone concentrations is a sensitive indicator of locoweed exposure and intoxication. These parameters may also be useful for monitoring intoxication and allowing subclinically affected cattle to be removed from infested areas before irreversible damage occurs.

Abstract
To determine which clay minerals have the potential to bind swainsonine, an in vitro screening procedure was conducted. Twenty compounds were screened in one replicated in vitro trial. A commercially available bentonite bound approximately 10% swainsonine and was chosen for use in a subsequent lamb feeding trial. Twenty fine-wool lambs (30.5 +/- .7 kg) were assigned to one of five treatments (four lambs/treatment). Treatments included 1) positive control, 100% sorghum sudangrass hay, 2) 85% sorghum sudangrass:15% locoweed (Oxytropis sericea, 430 ppm [DM basis] of swainsonine) +0 g of bentonite, 3) Treatment 2 + 14 g of bentonite, 4) Treatment 2 + 28 g of bentonite, and 5) Treatment 2 + 42 g of bentonite. Lambs were fed the experimental diets for 35 d and were then fed the positive control diet for an additional 21 d. Lambs were weighted and blood was collected via jugular venipuncture weekly from d 0 through 56. On d 35, additional blood samples were collected 1, 2, 4, and 8 h after feeding. Weekly blood samples were analyzed for serum clinical chemistry profiles, and additional blood samples collected on d 35 were analyzed for serum metabolic hormones and serum swainsonine concentrations. Within 1 wk, serum alkaline phosphatase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase activities increased markedly (P < .05) in lambs fed locoweed. Serum insulin, growth hormone, and prolactin concentrations were not affected by feeding locoweed, but serum triiodothyronine and thyroxine concentrations were decreased by approximately 50% (P < .05) in lambs fed locoweed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Terminalia oblongata (yellow wood) is a small deciduous tree growing over an area of central Queensland that supports a large proportion of this state's cattle population. Cattle and sheep that consume yellow wood leaves are poisoned and die. Severe losses of these animals can occur, and this problem is considered the main cause of economic loss to the cattle industry in the area apart from drought. A new toxic condensed tannin, terminalin was isolated from Terminalia oblongata. Its structure was deduced following NMR, IR, UV, MS analyses and in the knowledge that these data show good correlations to those obtained from the related punicalagin molecule which is present in the plant. Terminalin has a high toxicity (20 mg/kg) to white Quackenbush male mice and produces a vascular renal necrosis with slight liver necrosis, unlike punicalagin, which produces liver lesions but not kidney lesions. Similar results were obtained with sheep. A most interesting aspect is that there are two different specific toxins in the plant.

Abstract
To investigate the acute effects of snakeweed foliage (SW, Gutierrezia spp), 6 ruminally fistulated wethers (avg BW 78.6 kg) were dosed intraruminally (2/dose) with 454 g ground SW foliage, 227 g SW + 227 g alfalfa, or 454 g alfalfa daily for 5 d. Rumen fluid and blood samples were collected daily before SW dosage, and on day 6 the animals were euthanized and examined. At d 5, SW increased direct and indirect bilirubin indicating impaired hepatocyte function with biliary involvement and cholestasis. Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase concentrations were elevated, and pale yellowish enlarged livers were observed in SW-dosed animals. Serum creatinine concentrations were increased 2-fold by SW, suggesting renal impairment. Rumens from dosed animals were compacted with hemorrhagic and necrotic mucosa suggesting SW-impaired rumen motility and microbial fermentation. One wether dosed with 454 g SW died after SW dosage for 2 d.

Abstract
Fifteen progeny of two Polled Hereford sires were fed endophyte-infected tall fescue seed (E+) to investigate variability in susceptibility to fescue toxicosis. One sire, bred in Missouri, was reputed to produce calves that were resistant to fescue toxicosis. The Control sire, from Virginia, had unknown merit for susceptibility. There were two phases in which E+ was included in the diet (2 and 4) and three in which it was not (1, 3, and 5). Voluntary feed intake, serum prolactin, cholesterol, and alkaline phosphatase concentrations; ability to maintain homeothermy (afternoon minus morning rectal temperature); and heat-transfer inefficiency (afternoon rectal minus afternoon surface temperatures) were monitored. Intake and prolactin concentration were decreased by E+, but sire groups did not differ in responses across phases. Cholesterol levels were lower during E+ phases, and the rate of increase in cholesterol concentration after withdrawal of E+ differed between groups. Alkaline phosphatase concentrations were lower during E+ phases; calves from the Control sire showed greater reduction than calves sired by the Missouri sire. Ability to maintain homeothermy was reduced by E+, but the reduction did not differ between sire groups. Heat-transfer inefficiences were not indicative of fescue toxicosis in this study. Evidence was not compelling to support the existence of differences between the sire groups for susceptibility to toxicosis. However, progeny of the Missouri bull had higher feed intake and lower rectal and body surface temperatures through nearly all phases of the trial. This may account for the reputation of the Missouri bull to sire calves with relatively high resistance to fescue toxicosis.

Studies of fescue toxicosis have identified several classes of plant/fungal alkaloids that may be responsible for the toxicosis problem of endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum) infected tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). This review explores the interaction of these alkaloids with the animal's system and attempts to explain the various anomalies of fescue toxicosis through discussion of both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Abstract
Lupinosis was produced in sheep in four experiments by administering a toxic extract of Phomopsis leptostromiformis by various routes and at various dose rates. The course of the intoxication was followed by plasma biochemical analyses for a number of electrolytes, metabolites and enzymes. Results from these analyses suggested that in addition to being an hepatotoxicity, lupinosis also resulted in injury to muscle, kidney and adrenal cortex. This was confirmed by microscopic examination of these tissues.

Abstract
Sheep given different dosages and frequencies of Hypericum perforatum had decreased hemoglobin, red blood cell count, packed cell volumes, total protein, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and serum alkaline phosphotase activities. Blood urea nitrogen, sodium, potassium, bilrubin (total and direct), and the activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase and gamma glutamyltransferase increased. Hemato-biochemical assays were useful diagnostic aids to determine the severity of this plant's toxic effects.

Abstract
The serum 4-O-methylpyridoxine (MPN) levels in a 21 months-old patient with gin-nan food poisoning were determined by HPLC. The blood of the patient was taken at 8.5 and 15.5 h after taking about 50 ginkgo albumens. After deproteinization of the serum, the supernatant was pretreated with Sep-pak C18 cartridge and was applied to HPLC. HPLC was performed with a Hibar LiChrosorb RP-18 (4.0 mm i.d. x 250 mm, 7 microns) using a fluorescence detector (wave length of excitation and fluorescence; 290 and 400 nm, respectively). The serum MPN level was determined by the absolute calibration method. The determination limit of MPN in the serum was 0.05 micrograms/ml. The serum MPN concentration was 0.09 micrograms/ml at 8.5 h after taking ginkgo seeds, and was less than the determination limit of MPN (0.05 micrograms/ml) at 15.5 h. MPN, isolated from the seed of Ginkgo biloba L., is responsible for "gin-nan food poisoning," and its cardinal symptoms are mainly tonic and/or clonic convulsions and loss of consciousness. Infants are particularly vulnerable. This method may be available for proving the gin-nan food poisoning, chemically.

Abstract
To examine the effects of ingested snakeweed foliage (SW) on male fertility and reproduction, SW collected at prebloom stage was dried, ground, and mixed with ground commercial rat feed (CRF) as 0, 12.5, and 25% of total diets. Male rats fed SW for 20 d impregnated females as successfully as did dietary controls, but males fed 12.5 or 25% SW for 40 d had seemingly impaired fertility and apparently increased mortality of offspring. Males fed SW for an additional 30 and 42 d showed no differences (P > .05) in serum testosterone or LH concentrations after a GnRH challenge compared with controls. Semen samples collected from the vas deferens revealed that total sperm concentrations were similar (P > .10) between rats fed 12.5 or 25% SW and controls. The percentage of abnormal sperm was higher (P < .01) in rats fed 12.5 or 25% SW for 102 d, compared with the percentage of abnormal sperm in controls (11.5 and 17.8 vs 10.4%), and weight of testes was decreased (P < .05). Dietary SW increased (P < .01) activities of alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase over those in controls at d 20 (but not at d 98) and hepatomegaly was evident at d 50 and 98. Ingestion of snakeweed foliage by male rats increased abnormal sperm counts, impaired reproduction, and caused hepatotoxicosis.

Abstract
A complaint of poor productivity was investigated in a herd of Jersey cattle and a small flock of Dorper sheep that had been fed cabbage for 5 to 6 months per year, over a number of years. During that time a number of lambs were lost as a result of swayback, some cows aborted, milk production was down, and although the farmer was an experienced inseminator, the conception rate in the Jerseys was low. After rectal examination and consulting the records, 26% of the cows were found to have been open for more than 150 d and 28% had been inseminated more than 3 times. The body condition of the cows ranged from poor to moderate, the hair coats were dull and some cows were anaemia. The young lambs had visibly enlarged thyroids. Haematological investigations revealed a typical Heinz body type haemolytic anaemic. In the cattle the anaemia appeared to be macrocytic, hypochromic and associated with thrombocytosis, while in the sheep it seemed to be normochromic and slightly microcytic. Plasma copper concentrations were severely depressed in all cases. Most thyroxine concentrations were within the normal range, although some were on the low side. Analysis of cabbage revealed a high sulphur content and marginally low copper and zinc levels. The main factor in cabbage which is responsible for poor animal performance, is the high sulphur content. High levels of this mineral exert detrimental effects, in order of priority, by elevating s-methyl cystine sulphoxide, diminishing the availability of copper and raising the glucosinolate content of the plant.
