Application of gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-(APCI)MS/MS) in determination of PCBs (mono-to deca-) and PCDD/Fs in Chinese mitten crab food webs

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) are notorious persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which may bioaccumulate through food chain and play detrimental effects to organisms even at trace levels. Quantification of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in biotic samples is a great challenge. In the present study, gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry with an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source (GC-(APCI)MS/MS) was studied for the isotope-dilution analysis of PCBs (mono-to deca-) and PCDD/Fs in Chinese mitten crab food webs. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was applied for comparison. Light PCBs are compared between the two instruments for the first time. After optimization of instrument parameters, the RSDs of relative response factors of calibration curves were between 3.4% and 15.5% for PCBs and 1.7%-7.9% for PCDD/Fs. The limits of detection were between 0.021 and 0.150 pg/mL for PCBs and 0.051-0.237 pg/mL for PCDD/Fs. PCB concentrations in crab food web samples detected by GC-(APCI)MS/MS were well correlated with those detected by HRGC/HRMS. A DiCB, 3,3'-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB11), was the dominant PCB congener in aquatic food webs. Other MoCB and DiCB congeners were also widely identified; hence, low-weight PCB congeners should arouse more concern in the future. GC-(APCI)MS/MS may become an alternative instrument satisfying the PCB and PCDD/F detection.

Process tracing of PCDD/Fs from economizer to APCDs during solid waste incineration: Re-formation and transformation mechanisms

The emission of PCDD/Fs is a crucial factor for the aggravation of the Not-In-My-Back-Yard (NIMBY) syndrome, especially for the incineration plants that fail to meet the emission standard. It is well known that physicochemical processes in the boiler can notably affect the discharge of dioxins, especially under transient, non-steady conditions. However, few studies paid attention to the important operational parameters that influence PCDD/Fs formation and transformation in the boiler when an incinerator is in its daily steady operation. In this study, 36 samples were analyzed to achieve process tracing of PCDD/Fs. The concentration, congener profile and vapor/solid partitions of PCDD/Fs from the economizer to air pollution control devices (APCDs) under two typical steady conditions were investigated. Results indicated that increasing air supply aggravated the formation of PCDD/Fs, disturbed the vapor/solid partitions, and triggered a substandard emission. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling was firstly performed for the formation mechanism and orbital energy factors were identified as dominating factors. Besides, the removal rates of PCDD/Fs significantly correlated with the saturated vapor pressure and proportions of different isomers. This study is beneficial for operators to optimize relevant operational parameters of the incineration plants so as to get rid of substandard problems.

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in food products in Latvia: Congener-specific analysis, occurrence, and dietary exposure of the general population

A study was performed to evaluate the dietary exposure of the Latvian population to polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). Based on the toxicological characteristics, provisional levels of occurrence, congener patterns, and the availability of analytical standards, twenty-six congeners were included in the analysis. Considering the planar structure of PCNs, an analytical protocol on the basis of destructive clean-up and isolation of analytes on carbon was applied, while GC-HRMS and isotope dilution were used for the detection and quantification of analytes. Commonly consumed foods were analyzed for the content of PCNs, followed by per capita intake calculations. By applying the available in vitro relative potency (REP) factors, putative toxic equivalents (TEQ) were determined, in order to assess the "dioxin-like" effect arising from the presence of PCNs in food. The daily intake (EDI) for total PCNs (∑_PCN) and PCN-TEQ for the general population were calculated to be 116 pg kg^-1 body weight (b.w.) and 0.036 pg TEQ kg^-1 b.w., respectively. Fish and fish products were found to provide the main contribution to the dietary "dioxin-like" burden of PCNs, constituting ∼60% of the total PCN-TEQ intake. For some fish samples, PCN-TEQ could additionally contribute up to ∼3% to the regulated PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ, while for other matrices this contribution could be lower by an order of magnitude. The obtained data indicated that the estimated dietary exposure to PCNs is likely to be of low concern, although PCN-TEQ could be recognized as a contributor to the overall "dioxin-like" TEQ loading that results from the exposure to halogenated aromatics.

PCDD/Fs emissions from secondary copper production synergistically controlled by fabric filters and desulfurization

The effects of fabric filters and desulfurization systems during secondary copper smelting on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) concentrations, emission coefficients, and profiles were studied in an oxygen-rich smelting furnace and an anode furnace. In the anode furnace, the toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentration ranges were 0.106-1.04 ng World Health Organization (WHO)-TEQ/m³ at the fabric filters inlet and 0.027-0.17 ng WHO-TEQ/m³ at the outlet. For the oxygen-rich smelting furnace, the TEQ concentration ranges were 1.21-1.93 and 0.010-0.019 ng WHO-TEQ/m³ at the desulfurization system inlet and outlet, respectively. The TEQs in the outlet stack gases of the desulfurization system from the anode furnace were 0.0041-0.016 ng WHO-TEQ/m³. It is likely that PCDD/Fs that were taken away from the stack gases were adsorbed by the fly ash and gypsum. Solid residues were the dominant release routes for PCDD/Fs. PCDD/Fs congener and homologue profiles of stack gases from different smelting stages were similar. The contributions of more chlorinated homologues from the anode furnace decreased observably after the stack gases passed through the fabric filters. However, the desulfurization process did not greatly change the PCDD/Fs homologue profiles. Overall, both the fabric filters and desulfurization systems showed excellent removal efficiencies for PCDD/Fs in the stack gases, which reduced the TEQ emissions to well below the 0.5 ng WHO-TEQ/m³ to achieve standard discharge.

Spatial aspects of the dioxin risk formation in the Baltic Sea: A systematic review

Dioxins have been an inconvenience to the Baltic Sea ecosystem for decades. Although the concentrations in the environment and biota have continuously decreased, dioxins still pose a risk to human health. The risk and its formation vary in different parts of the Baltic Sea, due to variability in the environmental and societal factors affecting it. This paper presents a systematic literature review and knowledge synthesis about the regional dioxin risk formation in four sub-areas of the Baltic Sea and evaluates, whether systemic approach changes our thinking about the risk and its effective management. We studied the dioxin flux from atmospheric deposition to the Baltic Sea food webs, accumulation to two commercially and culturally important fish species, Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) and Baltic salmon (Salmo salar), and further to risk group members of four Baltic countries. Based on 46 studies, we identified 20 quantifiable variables and indexed them for commensurable regional comparison. Spatial differences in dioxin pollution, environmental conditions, food web dynamics, and the following dioxin concentrations in herring and salmon, together with fishing and fish consumption, affect how the final health risk builds up. In the southern Baltic Sea, atmospheric pollution levels are relatively high and environmental processes to decrease bioavailability of dioxins unfavorable, but the growth is fast, which curb the bioaccumulation of dioxins in the biota. In the North, long-range atmospheric pollution is minor compared to South, but the local pollution and slower growth leads to higher bioaccumulation rates. However, based on our results, the most remarkable differences in the dioxin risk formation between the areas arise from the social sphere: the emissions, origin of national catches, and cultural differences in fish consumption. The article suggests that acknowledging spatial characteristics of socio-ecological systems that generate environmental risks may aid to direct local focus in risk management.

Combustion performance and emissions from torrefied and water washed biomass using a kg-scale burner

This study investigates wastes and biomass as alternative fuels in a kg-scale burner in terms of combustion characteristics and emissions. Water washing, torrefaction, and their combination are used to improve the properties of the wastes and biomass. The air pollutants in the exhaust of the burner are also analyzed. It could be concluded that the reactivity and average heat supply from the pretreatment are improved significantly. The improvement ratio of average heat supply can be up to 103.5 %, stemming from water-soluble ash removal during water washing. Torrefaction can lift the average heat supply due to the increment of fixed carbon content in the fuels, but it reduces the reactivity owing to the decrement of volatile matters. Most of the raw or pretreated materials can be directly combusted, as a result of lower regulated air pollutants (e.g., NO_x, SO₂, CO) from them than from coal. Water washing can successfully remove chlorine in the wastes by dissolution since most of the chlorine in the wastes are in salt form. The chlorine reduction significantly reduces the HCl concentration (55-58 % reduction efficiency) and the toxicity concentration of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (78-84 %), while torrefaction increases the toxicity concentration owing to the de novo synthesis.

Decreasing temporal trends of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in adipose tissue from residents near a hazardous waste incinerator

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are very toxic chemicals which are emitted in waste incineration and whose exposure has important adverse effects for the human health. In 2019, adipose tissue samples were collected from 15 individuals with a median age of 61 years, who had been living near a hazardous waste incinerator in Constantí (Spain). The content of PCDD/Fs in each sample was analyzed. The results were compared with data from previous studies, conducted before (1998) and after (2002, 2007 and 2013) the facility started to operate, and based on populations of similar age. In 2019, the mean concentration of PCDD/Fs in adipose tissue was 6.63 pg WHO-TEQ/g fat, ranging from 0.95 to 12.95 pg WHO-TEQ/g fat. A significant reduction was observed with respect to the baseline study (1998), when a mean PCDD/Fs concentration of 40.1 pg WHO-TEQ/g fat was found. Moreover, the current level was much lower than those observed in the 3 previous studies (9.89, 14.6 and 11.5 pg WHO-TEQ/g fat in 2002, 2007 and 2013, respectively). The body burdens of PCDD/Fs were strongly correlated with age. The significant reduction of PCDD/Fs levels in adipose tissue fully agreed with the decreasing trend of the dietary intake of PCDD/Fs by the population of the zone (from 210.1 pg I-TEQ/day in 2018 to 8.54 pg WHO-TEQ/day in 2018). Furthermore, a similar decrease has been also observed in other biological, such as breast milk and plasma. The current data in adipose tissue, as well as those in other biological monitors, indicate that the population living near the HWI is not particularly exposed to high levels of PCDD/Fs. However, biomonitoring studies cannot differentiate the impact of the HWI emissions from food consumption patterns. This question can be only solved by conducting complementary investigations and contrasting the results of monitoring and epidemiological studies.

Levels of dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in seawater from the Hornsund fjord (SW Svalbard)

Knowledge of contaminant distribution is important, particularly in the vulnerable first results about the occurrence of seventeen polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans and twelve dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in arctic fjord seawater are reported. The contaminants were measured in 10 samples of suspended particulate matter collected in Hornsund (Svalbard). The ∑PCDD/F and ∑dl-PCB concentrations ranged from 0.066 to 231.47 pg/L and from 2.43 to 46.43 pg/L respectively. In terms of total PCDD/Fs, in general highly chlorinated PCDFs constituted the most significant fraction. Among dl-PCB compounds, PCB118 was the dominant congener. The toxicity equivalent for the samples ranged from 0.0008 to 1.90 pg I-TEQ/L for ∑PCDD/Fs, while for ∑dl-PCB it ranged from 0.0002 to 0.024 pg WHO₀₅-TEQ/L. High concentrations of dioxins and dl-PCBs in some samples indicated that those contaminants could pose a threat to marine biota.

Transfer of persistent organic pollutants in food of animal origin - Meta-analysis of published data

The transfer of POPs in food of animal origin has been studied by a meta-analysis of 28 peer-reviewed articles using transfer rate (TR) for milk and eggs and bioconcentration factors (BCF) for eligible tissues after establishing an adapted methodology. TRs of the most toxic PCDD/Fs into milk were generally elevated and even higher into eggs. BCFs in excreting adult animals varied widely between studies complicating to hierarchize tissues or congeners, even if liver and fat seemed to bioconcentrate more than lean tissues. Short time studies have clearly shown low BCFs contrarily to field studies showing the highest BCFs. The BCFs of PCDD/Fs in growing animals were higher in liver than in fat or muscle. In contrast to easily bioconcentrating hexachlorinated congeners, octa- and heptachlorinated congeners barely bioconcentrate. PCB transfer into milk and eggs was systematically high for very lipophilic congeners. Highly ortho-chlorinated PCBs were transferred >50% into milk and eggs and even >70% for congeners 123 and 167 into eggs. BCFs of the most toxic PCBs 126 and 169 were significantly higher than for less toxic congeners. BCFs seem generally low in PBDEs except congeners 47, 153 and 154. DDT and its metabolites showed high bioconcentration. Differences between tissues appeared but were masked by a study effect. In addition to some methodologic recommendations, this analysis showed the high transfer of POPs into eggs, milk and liver when animals were exposed justifying a strong monitoring in areas with POP exposure.

Development of phosphorus-based inhibitors for PCDD/Fs suppression

Inhibition mechanisms of sulfur-, nitrogen- and phosphorus- based inhibitors on the de novo synthesis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) were studied by exploring speciation evolution of carbon, chorine and copper in fly ash under laboratory-scale experiments. Significant inhibition of PCDD/Fs by thiourea (TUA) and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) was observed as 97.2% and 98.2%, respectively, except for potassium dihydrogen phosphate (PDP). ADP and PDP exhibited better inhibition on PCDFs than on PCDDs, whereas TUA exhibited the opposite effect. After adding inhibitors, the proportion of C-O/C=O/O-C=O bonds at the surface of fly ash increased, and stronger oxidation of carbon occurred, together with the conversion from Cu²⁺ to Cu⁺ and the inhibition of organic chlorine formation. Kinetic model results indicated that TUA might either suppress the carbon gasification or promote the decomposition of PCDD/Fs, resulting in a remarkable inhibition of PCDD/Fs formation. Simulated chemical reaction equilibrium further comfirmed that catalytic metal could be deactivated into CuS and Cu₂S by sulfur, and into Cu₂P₂O₇ by phosphorus. Moreover, NH₃, decomposed from TUA and ADP, was able to convert Cl₂ into HCl, albeit with a weaker chlorination ability. This study of inhibition mechanisms is useful for the exploration and utilization of efficient inhibitors in full-scale incinerators.

High levels of dioxins and PCBs in meat, fat and livers of free ranging pigs, goats, sheep and cows from the island of Curaçao

Samples of adipose tissue, meat and livers from pigs, cows, sheep and goats from Curaçao were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and dioxin-like (dl-) and non-dioxin-like (ndl-) PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Levels in many samples of adipose tissue were higher than the EU maximum levels (MLs) for PCDD/Fs and the sum of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs (sum-TEQ), indicating unusually high levels. Median sum-TEQ (Toxic Equivalents) levels for pigs, cows, sheep and goats were 0.9 (range 0.3-35), 3.0 (0.5-14), 5.7 (0.3-28) and 6.5 (0.5-134) pg TEQ g^-1 fat. For most samples, the congener pattern pointed to the burning of waste as the major source, in line with the fact that most animals forage outside. MLs for ndl-PCBs were also exceeded in some of the samples, indicating that some areas are additionally contaminated with PCBs. Meat levels showed similar lipid based levels as adipose tissue, contrary to liver levels, which were much higher in most animals. Pigs showed liver sequestration at lower levels in adipose tissue than the ruminants. The relatively high levels observed in this study are likely to result in high exposure of consumers and measures were taken to reduce the contamination of areas where animals forage.

Associations of PCBS, dioxins and furans with follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone in postmenopausal women: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002

BACKGROUND

The general population is exposed to the group of endocrine disrupting chemicals persistent organic pollutants (POPs), that includes polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs).

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this research was to evaluate the associations of serum levels of PCB, PCDD, and PCDF congeners with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in postmenopausal women not taking exogenous hormones. We hypothesized that associations of POPs with these gonadotropins could be modified by factors affecting endogenous hormones.

METHODS

Cross-sectional analyses were conducted on data from 89 postmenopausal women using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). POPs were summarized based on classification schemes thought to reflect toxicological properties. Associations of POPs and gonadotropin hormones were modeled with multivariable regression models. When evidence of interaction was found, conditional effects were estimated.

RESULTS

We found inverse associations of LH, but not FSH, with exposure to anti-estrogenic and/or dioxin-like POPs, but not with non dioxin-like PCBs. A doubling of dioxin-like toxic equivalents (TEQs) was associated with a decrease in LH of 11.9% (95% CI = -21.3%, -1.4%, p = 0.03). Inverse associations were enhanced by potential effect modifiers related to both direct and indirect estrogenicity, including obesity and the obesity-related condition inflammation.

CONCLUSIONS

These investigations support a pattern of endocrine-disrupting effects by dioxin-like POPs among postmenopausal women, especially those with conditions related to peripheral estrogenicity.

Long-term nationwide assessment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls ambient air concentrations for ten years in South Korea

In this study, seasonal/regional variations of Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) and dioxin like-polychlorinated biphenyls in the ambient air were monitored for ten years (2008-2017) using a high volume air sampler. As a result of strict regulation enforced by Korea Ministry of Environment in 2008, PCDD/DFs concentrations in the ambient air decreased from 0.051 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2009 to 0.014 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2017 which was comparably associated with cut-down of their emission sources from 880.2 g I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2001 to 24.2 g I-TEQ Sm^-3 in 2015; revealing that it was only 2.7% against that of 2001. In 2017, mean TEQ concentration level of PCDD/DFs in the air of South Korea was quite low in comparison to its ambient environmental standards of 0.6 pg I-TEQ Sm^-3 for PCDD/DFs. Particularly, the sum of PCDD/DFs in the background revealed the lowest level, however, the fraction of octachlorodibenzodioxin among other isomers exposed at the highest level in this study, suggesting that the ambient air quality in the background being studied was severely and persistently impaired by inflowing unknown sources of any possible anthropogenic transboundary migratory air pollutants. Moreover, this study conducted the scientific analysis of the long-term variations in the ambient air and emission sources using principal component analysis. From this of 10 years long-term nationwide assessments for the PCDD/DFs and dl-PCBs in the ambient air, it is possible to prove that South Korean environmental policy to manage POPs has been successfully conducted for the last ten years.

Factors associated with partitioning behavior of persistent organic pollutants in a feto-maternal system: A multiple linear regression approach

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been a matter of particular concern because such exposure can severely affect the health of the fetus. The mechanistic understanding of the partitioning behavior of POPs in the feto-maternal system and the associated factors, however, have rarely been studied. Here, we employed a new approach based on multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis to predict the feto-maternal ratio (FM-ratio) of POPs and to assess the factors associated with feto-maternal partitioning behavior. Two preliminary exploratory MLR models were built using physiological conditions of the participants, and molecular descriptors were calculated with a computational model. The FM-ratio was calculated from the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 20 pairs of maternal and cord blood. The models showed that the lipids and cholesterols in the maternal and cord blood and the placenta significantly influence the partitioning of POPs. The body mass index (BMI) change during pregnancy was also related to the FM-ratio. The physicochemical properties associated with lipophilicity and molecular size were also related to the FM-ratio. Even though the results should be interpreted with caution, the preliminary MLR models illustrate that feto-maternal partitioning is governed by transplacental transporting mechanisms, toxicokinetics, and the molecular physicochemical properties of POPs. Overall, the new approach used in this study can improve our understanding of the partitioning behavior in the feto-maternal system.

Exposure and health risk assessment of secondary contaminants closely related to brominated flame retardants (BFRs): Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) in human milk in shanghai

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs), as the secondary environmental pollutants of the widely used brominated flame retardants (BFRs), possess the similar physicochemical and toxic properties as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). However, studies on human body exposure to them are extremely limited. In this study, forty human milk samples collected in Shanghai were measured for 13 PBDD/F congeners using gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS), to investigate their exposure level and characteristics, potential source and corresponding health risks to breastfed infants. The results showed no PBDDs but three PBDF congeners including 2,3,7,8-TBDF, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF and OBDF (mean concentration (detection rates) are 3.2 pg/g (72.5%), 9.5 pg/g (100%) and 28 pg/g (67.5%), respectively) were detected. The average toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ, 0.42 pg/g lw) presented the highest concentration level compared to other regions reported. The contribution of PBDFs to the total TEQ of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs is 6.8%. The correlation between PBDD/Fs and age or dietary habits was not observed, which normally existed in their chlorinated analogues-PCDD/Fs. Significant correlations were observed between PBDFs and highly brominated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (especially for BDE 183 and BDE 209). The correlation between PCDD/Fs and PBDFs was not observed except 2,3,7,8-TBDF. The high PBDFs exposure in Shanghai may originate from the emission of PBDEs and/or non-PBDE BFRs in environment, according to the consistency of the environmental data previously reported. The average estimated dietary intakes (EDI) for breastfed infants is 2.0 pg TEQ/kg·bw/day (0.13-13 pg TEQ/kg·bw/day), within the range of the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for TCDD (1-4 pg TEQ/kg·bw/day) suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, given the high toxicity of PBDD/Fs, the potential health risks of these pollutants for breastfed infants should be of concern.

Polychlorinated organic pollutants (PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs) in loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) turtles from Central-Southern Tyrrhenian Sea

This study assesses for the first time the levels of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in sea turtles coming from Tyrrhenian Sea. The concentrations measured in liver of the 24 specimens analysed were 6.90 vs 5.65 pg g^-1 wet weight (ww) for PCDD/Fs and 10.95 vs 0.79 ng g^-1 ww for DL-PCBs in Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, respectively. The DL-PCB levels resulted very higher in Caretta caretta than Chelonia mydas probably due to the different eating habits between the two species investigated. Furthermore, the highest levels of DL-PCBs were determined in livers of the adult Caretta caretta turtles of male sex. Positive correlations were found out between PCB-81 and the body mass (BM) of turtles (r² = 0.6561; p = 0.001) and between PCB-81 and the curved carapace length (CCL) (r² = 0.6250; p = 0.006) suggesting that the body burden of contaminants is related to the body size. The mean TEQ values, as a matter of risk assessment for turtles, were 3.64 vs 1.62 pg TEQ g^-1 ww for PCDD/Fs and 8.72 vs 2.16 pg TEQ g^-1 ww for DL-PCBs in Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, respectively. The results reported in this study increase the data available about the consequences of the Mediterranean Sea contamination by organochlorine pollutants and highlight an evident PCDD/F and PCB bioaccumulation in sea turtle tissues that threatens the survival of these marine organisms.

Feasible and effective control strategies on extreme emissions of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants during the start-up processes of municipal solid waste incinerators

A typical two-day start-up of municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) can yield polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) emission quantities around 10 times higher than those from an entire year of normal operations, as measured in this study. Thus, we tested specific control strategies for inhibiting the formation of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (Cl-POPs), namely, extensively cleaning the ash accumulated beneath the furnace bed of the combustion chamber and deposited on the walls of the superheater and economizer and shortening the residence time of the flue gas in the optimal temperature window for Cl-POP formation. Also, we advanced the injection times of the activated carbon and lime slurry to lower Cl-POP emissions during start-up. Our findings show that these strategies were highly effective and reduced the Cl-POP emissions by > 98%, most of which (96.4-98.2%) was attributable to inhibiting formation. In summary, the proposed control strategies require no modifications to existing air pollution control devices, have little influence on operational cost, and are effective and feasible for the majority of MSWIs.

Precursors of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in Arctic and Antarctic marine sediments: Environmental concern in the face of climate change

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and their precursors - pentachlorophenol (PCP) and triclosan (TCS), constitute a group of persistent, highly toxic multimedia pollutants, being easily transported via atmosphere over long distances, thus particularly threatening to the polar areas. The global fate of PCDD/Fs is temperature-dependent, and their transfer and immobilization at the Poles are described by the grasshopper effect and the cold trap phenomenon. The aim of this interdisciplinary study was to perform a preliminary assessment of the present state of pollution of Arctic and Antarctic marine sediments by PCP and TCS along with determination of PCDD/Fs contamination by immunoassay. Sediments from 20 stations were collected during two polar expeditions (2013-2016). The study area covered Hornsund Fjord and the southwest coast of Wedel-Jarlsberg Land (Arctic) - Skodde Bay, Nottingham Bay, Isbjørnhamna Bay and Admiralty Bay (Antarctica) - Suszczewski Cove, Halfmoon Cove and Herve Cove. The studied contaminants were quantified in 60% of the collected sediments, with almost half exceeding the environmentally safe levels according European regulations and worldwide literature. The determined levels of PCP, TCS and PCDD/F in Arctic and Antarctic sediments were to be comparable to those reported in the southern Baltic Sea located in the intense industrialized mid-latitudes. Maximum concentrations were observed in the vicinity of retreating, marine terminating glaciers. This observation confirms reemission of POPs into the global cycle with respect to the worldwide ocean warming. The results of this study should gain attention of the international and regional environmental agencies as well as the main chlorine production decision makers.

Internal distribution and fate of persistent organic contaminants (PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs, HBCDs, TBBPA, and PFASs) in a Bos Taurus

While terrestrial organisms such as livestock are consumed regularly, studies of internal distribution and bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been focused more on aquatic organisms. In this study, we have assessed the internal distribution and fate of legacy (PCDD/Fs and PCBs) and emerging POPs (HBCDs and PFASs), and TBBPA in 42 tissues of a Bos Taurus. PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs, and HBCDs were found 3, 4, and 4-fold higher in the lipid-rich organs (subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, large intestine) compared to the remaining organs and muscles, owing to their hydrophobic properties. The TBBPA concentration in the excrement was 36-fold higher compared to the average tissues, suggesting a short internal half-life of TBBPA. Among PFASs, PFUnDA displayed 98% contribution from all ionic PFASs in the tissues due to its strong binding affinity, high exposure via feed and water, and increasing emergence of PFUnDA and its precursors in the Southeast Asian countries. While our study suggests that, at the moment, there is no significant health risks to the general Korean population, the future changes in environmental exposure as well as the internal dynamics and fate of various POPs species should be kept in mind when consuming various parts of livestock.

Congener patterns of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and biphenyls as a useful aid to source identification during a contamination incident in the food chain

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and biphenyls (PCBs) are still considered among the most important groups of contaminants in the food chain. Self-control by food producers and official control by authorities are important activities that allow contaminant sources to be traced and promote further reduction in food and feed levels. Strict but feasible maximum levels were set by the EU Commission for food and feed to support this strategy, as well as action levels and thresholds. When products exceed these levels, it is important to trace the source of contamination and take measures to remove it. Congener patterns of PCDD/Fs and PCBs differ between sources and are important tools for source identification. Therefore, patterns associated with different sources and incidents relating to various feed matrices and certain agricultural chemicals were collated from published scientific papers, with additional ones available from some laboratories. The collection was evaluated for completeness by presentations at workshops and conferences. Primary sources appear to derive from 5 categories, i) by-products from production of organochlorine chemicals (e.g. PCBs, chlorophenols, chlorinated pesticides, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)), ii) the result of combustion of certain materials and accidental fires, iii) the use of inorganic chlorine, iv) recycling/production of certain minerals, and v) certain naturally occurring clays (ball clay, kaolinite). A decision tree was developed to assist in the identification of the source.

Biomonitoring of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in human milk: Exposure and risk assessment for lactating mothers and breastfed children from Spain

The main objective of the present research was to evaluate the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in the human milk of Spanish lactating women who participated in the BETTERMILK project so that exposure and risk could be assessed for these mothers and their breastfed children. The total ∑PCDD/Fs + dl-PCBs TEQ₂₀₀₅ concentrations in the upper-bound (UB) ranged from 1.29 to 13.48 pgTEQ₂₀₀₅ g^-1 lipid. The estimated geometric mean level for the sum of PCDD/F and dl-PCBs was 4.10 and 4.42 pgTEQ₂₀₀₅ g^-1 lipid, lower-bound (LB) and UB respectively and were below the reference level reported by EFSA, which is associated with adverse effects in boys of 9 years and related to lactating mothers' exposure values of the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of around 2 pgTEQ₂₀₀₅ kg^-1 bw per week. Nevertheless, it was exceeded when the 95th percentile (8.31 pgTEQ₂₀₀₅ g^-1 lipid, as UB) was considered. Results from a multiple regression analysis showed that age has a significant impact on milk ∑PCDD/Fs + dl-PCBs levels, with higher concentrations observed in the milk from older mothers.

PCDD/Fs in paired hair and serum of workers from a municipal solid waste incinerator plant in South China: Concentrations, correlations, and source identification

Human hair has been widely used to evaluate the exposure to drugs and organic pollutants. However, reports on the relationship between polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDFs) in hair and the body burden of PCDD/Fs are limited. In this study, the association between PCDD/Fs in paired hair and serum samples from workers was examined in a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) plant in South China. Fly ash and flue gas from the MSWI plant were also analyzed to determine the source apportionment of PCDD/Fs in the hair. The median international toxic equivalents (I-TEQs) of ΣPCDD/F in serum and hair were 28.0 pg TEQ/g (lipid weight) and 0.30 pg TEQ/g (dry weight), respectively. The indicator congener of PCDD/Fs for the TEQ levels was 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran (PeCDF) in both hair and serum, the concentrations of which both exhibited significant and strong linear dependence on the total TEQ levels (p < 0.01, R² = 0.966 and R² = 0.670, respectively). Significant positive correlations were found in the 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (HxCDD) and octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) levels between the hair and serum samples (p < 0.05). Flue gas (which is an external source) was identified as the primary source of PCDD/Fs in human hair. Blood and flue gas were accountable for, on average, 37% and 61% of the PCDD/Fs in hair, respectively.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs) in Italian food: Occurrence and dietary exposure

Human exposure to polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) through the dietary pathway is widely recognised and regulations in some regions of the world help to limit food contamination. Similar information on the analogous polybrominated dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs) is scarce, partly due to the higher threshold to analytical access and unavailability of some standard materials. The analytical methodology developed here determined twelve planar PBDD/F congeners using ¹³Carbon labelled PBDD/F surrogates and high resolution mass spectrometric detection, and was extensively validated prior to the analysis of a range of commonly consumed Italian foods. The methodology also allowed simultaneous determination of PCDD/Fs and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The results show that PBDD/Fs occurred in different foods over a range of concentrations from <0.001 pg/g to 4.58 pg/g in fish. The dietary exposure (upper bound) of different Italian population groups, resulting from these occurrence levels was estimated using the toxic equivalency (TEQ) approach that is commonly used for dioxin-like contaminants and ranged from 0.17 to 0.42 pg TEQ/kg bodyweight/day (lower bound - 0.01 pg TEQ/kg bodyweight/day) depending on the population subgroup. Although precautionary, upper bound values may provide a more realistic estimate of toxicity as not all congeners and foods were measured. As expected, children were more highly exposed than adults due to lower body weight. These exposure levels were between a quarter and a third of that arising from the sum of PCDD/Fs and PCBs (0.61 to 1.38 pg WHO-TEQ/kg bodyweight/day), but they contribute to dioxin-like toxicity. If this data is considered in view of the revised tolerable dioxin-like dietary intake published by EFSA in 2018, it is evident that the tolerable weekly intake of 2 pg/kg bodyweight/week would be exceeded by some of the assessed population sub-groups, or all sub-groups if the cumulative intake is considered.

Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in donkey milk: Correlation with the infection level by intestinal strongyles

AIM

The study aimed at evaluating the concentration levels of organochlorine pollutants in donkey milk and their modulation on the intestinal strongyle infection. Risk evaluation for consumer health was also investigated.

METHODS

We analyzed milk of grazing donkeys living in areas of Southern of Italy affected by organochlorine compounds environmental pollution and parasite infection. The presence of pollutants was assessed through summary statistics; regression analysis of intestinal strongyle on pollutant concentration was performed to investigate the relationship between the two variables.

RESULTS

PCB concentrations (mainly non-dioxin-like (ndl)-PCBs) were higher than OCP ones. Mean values of ndl-PCBs across areas ranged from 93.13 to 263.64 ng g^-1. In all sample units we detected the six indicator PCBs with the prevalence of the PCB 153, followed by the PCB 28 and the PCB 101. Among the dioxin-like (dl)-PCBs, non-ortho PCB 169, 77 and 126 were assessed in some milk samples; in all areas we detected the mono-ortho PCB 118 and PCB 105. Positive correlation between infection level and six indicator PCBs as well as between the former and HCB, on WW and LW, were observed (at least statistically significant at 5 percent). In some cases, Dl-PCB concentrations emerged as dangerous given the EU maximum residue limit for PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs.

CONCLUSION

Evidence supports the hypothesis of an immunosuppressive role of organochlorine pollutants; risk evaluation reveals the potential health impact of dl-PCB intake, particularly for major donkey milk consumers such as infants, children with cow milk and multiple food intolerance, and elders.

Chemical composition and in vitro aryl hydrocarbon receptor-mediated activity of atmospheric particulate matter at an urban, agricultural and industrial site in North Africa (Bizerte, Tunisia)

As recognized risk factor to pose a health threat to humans and wildlife globally, atmospheric particulate matter (PM) were collected from a North African coastal city (Bizerte, Tunisia) for one year, and were characterized for their chemical compositions, including mercury (Hg_PM), as well as organic contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)), organic carbon (OC) and organic nitrogen (ON), determined in a previous study. Then, we applied an in vitro reporter gene assay (DR-CALUX) to detect and quantify the dioxin-like activity of PM-associated organic contaminants. Results showed that average Hg_PM concentration over the entire sampling period was found to be 13.4 ± 12 pg m^-3. Seasonal variation in the Hg_PM concentration was observed with lower values in spring and summer and higher values in winter and autumn due to the variation of meteorological conditions together with the emission sources. Principal component analysis suggested that fossil fuel combustion and a nearby cement factory were the dominant anthropogenic Hg_PM sources. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated activities were observed in all organic extracts of atmospheric PM from Bizerte city (388.3-1543.6 fg m^-3), and shows significant positive correlations with all PM-associated organic contaminants. A significant proportion of dioxin-like activity of PM was related to PAHs. The dioxin-like activity followed the same trend as PM-associated organic contaminants, with higher dioxin-like activity in the cold season than in the warm season, indicating the advantage and utility of the use of bioassays in risk assessment of complex environmental samples.

White rot fungus Pleurotus pulmonarius enhanced bioremediation of highly PCDD/F-contaminated field soil via solid state fermentation

This study was performed to evaluate the use of white rot fungus, Pleurotus pulmonarius, to treat polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) in contaminated soil using solid state fermentation (SSF). The soil was collected from a long-closed pentachlorophenol plant in southern Taiwan. The non-sterilized soil with a total PCDD/F concentration of 14,000 ± 2400 ng I-TEQ kg^-1 was mixed directly with the solid fungal inocula at dry w/w ratio of 1:1.4 (ratio-adjusted test) and incubated at 26 ± 2 °C in a controlled environment. The highest PCDD/F decomposition was observed during the mycelium colonization. Pearson correlation coefficient (r) studied during this period (35 days) indicated that laccase had no significant correlation (r = -0.53), while manganese peroxidase had a strong positive correlation (r = 0.88) with PCDD/F decomposition efficiency. After 72 days, the more toxic congeners, tetra- and penta-CDD/Fs were removed to non-detectable levels. Meanwhile, the removal efficiencies of hexa-, hepta-, and octa-CDD/Fs were >80%, >97%, and >90%, respectively. The simultaneous degradation of low and high chlorinated DD/Fs suggested that overall removal was nonspecific. The overall PCDD/F removal was 96%, and the residual concentration (276 ng I-TEQ kg^-1) was below the regulatory control limit (1000 ng I-TEQ kg^-1). In conclusion, this study shows that P. pulmonarius via SSF can successfully remediate the PCDD/F-contaminated field soil. Furthermore, this SSF technique overcame the well-known intractability of PCDD/F biodegradation in non-sterilized soil, making it promising for actual field application.

Estimated PCDD/F TEQ and total TEQ concentrations in the serum of 7-10 year old Finnish children

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants that have detrimental health effects. As people are exposed to them mainly through the diet, EU has set maximum food dioxin and PCBs levels. EFSA CONTAM Panel made new risk assessment in 2018 that lowered the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) from 14 pg-TEQ/kg bw/week to 2 pg-TEQ/kg bw/week. Critical effect was decreased semen count at the age of 18-19 years if serum total TEQ at the age of 9 years exceeded the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) of 7 pg/g lipid. However, it is largely unknown to what extent NOAEL is exceed in European boys currently. We thus measured PCBs from small volume of serum in 184 Finnish children 7-10 years of age. To estimate the TEQ levels of children from measured PCB levels, we used our existing human milk PCDD/F and PCB concentrations to create a hierarchical Bayesian regression model that was used to estimate TEQs from measured PCBs. For quality control (QC), three pooled blood samples from 18 to 20 year old males were measured for PCDD/Fs and PCBs, and estimated for TEQs. In QC samples measured and estimated TEQs agreed within 84%-106%. In our estimate for 7-10 year old children, PCDD/F TEQ exceeded NOAEL only in 0.5% and total TEQ in 2.7% of subjects. Risk management following the decreased TWI proposed by the CONTAM Panel should be carefully considered if total TEQ in children is already largely below the NOAEL.

Relevance of current PCB concentrations in edible fish species from the Mediterranean Sea

Legal restrictions and bans have led to a steady decrease in PCB environmental concentrations. Yet, in recent years PCBs have been found at very high levels in the Mediterranean Sea, for instance, in some apex predators. This work aimed to investigate current PCB (eighteen congeners: #28,52,77,81,101,105,114,118,123,126,138,153,156,157,167,169,180,189) concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea and their relevance today, focusing on their occurrence in edible fish species typically consumed in the Mediterranean diet. In spring 2017, a total of 48 fish samples from the Northern Thyrrenian Sea were collected: 16 specimens of sardine (Sardina pilchardus), 16 of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and 16 of bogue (Boops boops). PCBs were quantified in the muscle of the animals by means of GC-QqQ-MS. They were found in all samples at the greatest concentrations (ng/g w.w.) in sardine (4.15-17.9, range), and very similar values between anchovy (1.01-7.08) and bogue (1.46-7.22). WHO-TEQ PCB values followed the same order, i.e. sardine (0.410-1.24, range in pg/g w.w.) > anchovy (0.0778-0.396) ~ bogue (0.0726-0.268). These concentrations lied below the European limits of 75 ng/g (w.w.) for the six indicator PCBs and 6.5 pg/g WHO-TEQ for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in muscle meat of fish. Additionally, estimated weekly intakes (EWI, in pg WHO-TEQ/Kg/week) for sardine (1.2), anchovy (0.29) and bogue (0.35) scored below the safe value proposed by EFSA of 2 pg WHO-TEQ/Kg/week. When comparing with data reported for the same species in previous Mediterranean studies, values found here were lower than those surveyed in the late 90s and early 2000s; however, they were often not notably different from concentrations reported in last years. This builds up on the concept of a current slow decrease of PCBs in the Mediterranean Sea, likely linked to new inputs and/or remobilization of burdens, and reinforces the need of continous monitoring of these legacy contaminants still ubiquitous today.

New approach for removing co-extracted lipids before mass spectrometry measurement of persistent of organic pollutants (POPs) in foods

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) methods for foods and animal feeds require sufficient sample intake followed by an extensive removal of interfering matrix components and concentration before a gas chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method can be applied. The extraction dissolves associated lipids in animal foods or feeds. Methods must eliminate all co-extracted lipids before determination by GC-MS. A new approach for removing lipids is presented using basic silica gel or metal ion immobilized silica gel (Ag+) in a single step. Absorbent order, adsorbent amounts, and flow rates were found to be essential for consistent results. KOH/silica gel or Ag⁺ ion (AgNO₃) silica gel were both shown to retain 75-85% of the co-extracted lipids without using sulfuric acid. KOH/silica gel method applied to butter fortified at 7.3 pg TEQ/g lipid with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) produced accurate results for all fortified congeners with 20% of predicted (n = 6). Ag⁺ silica gel incorporated into the Miura GO-EHT automated system produced similar results fortified at 3 pg TEQ/g lipid. During PCDD/F fortifications of butter with PCDD/Fs (n = 6), labeled standard recoveries for PCDD/Fs and planar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were all acceptable (52-99%) averaging 77% using the Miura system. A reduction in the amounts of sulfuric acid silica gel needed was possible in the completion of co-extractant removal. PCDD/F spikes into butter and for a spiked sunflower oil (PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs) were within ± 20% of the predicted using the Miura system; suitable for current methods criteria for foods including criteria in EU legislation.

Effect of different air pollution control devices on the gas/solid-phase distribution of PCDD/F in a full-scale municipal solid waste incinerator

The emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F) from full-scale municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) is harmful to human and environmental health. This study analyzes the effect of different units of an air pollution control devices (APCDs), i.e. the semi-dry scrubber, fabric filter (FF), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and wet scrubber (WS), on the removal characteristics and gas- and solid-phase distributions of PCDD/F in MSWI flue gas. APCDs reduce PCDD/F concentrations from 24.9 ng Nm^-3 to 0.979 ng Nm^-3 (2.16 ng I-TEQ Nm^-3 to 0.0607 ng I-TEQ Nm^-3), with a total removal efficiency (RE) of 96.1% (97.2% I-TEQ). Specifically, APCDs remove more than 95% of both gas- and solid-phase PCDD/F. The FF coupled with active carbon injection (FF + ACI) substantially reduces both gas- and solid-phase PCDD/F concentrations with an RE of 97.2% (98.7% I-TEQ). Additionally, FF + ACI exhibits a better RE of PCDF (98.9%) than PCDD (94.6%) and leads to PCDD congeners dominating the gas-phase. Both desorption and destruction of PCDD/F occur in the SCR, which favors removal of gas-phase PCDD/F but increases solid-phase PCDD/F. Therefore, SCR only decreases PCDD/F with a low RE of 27.6% (16.9% I-TEQ). However, SCR reduces NO_x with a high RE of 82.3%, which could inhibit the RE of PCDD/F because of their different reaction mechanisms. WS increases PCDD/F in both the gas and solid-phase by 1.95 times (2.57 times for I-TEQ) due to the memory effect, which typically increases the total mass concentration of PCDD/F and the proportions of lower-chlorinated gas-phase PCDD/F. Migration of gas- and solid-phase PCDD/F are also analyzed according to temperature. The results of this study can contribute to the optimized design of industrial APCDs for controlling PCDD/F emissions from MSWI.

Inhibition of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans by phosphorus-containing compounds in model fly ash

Waste incineration is a preferred method in China to dispose the municipal solid waste, but controlling the production of highly toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans effectively during incineration is both challenging and imperative. In this study, the suppression of PCDD/Fs by various phosphorus-containing compounds was explored, and the mechanisms responsible for the inhibition were studied in detail. The experiments took place in a lab-scale vertical tubular reactor at 350 °C under a simulated flue gas (12 vol% O₂ in N₂ flow), and both the off-gases and residues were collected for PCDD/Fs analysis. The scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the reaction residues. The experimental results revealed that NH₄H₂PO₄ and (NH₄)₂·HPO₄ showed the highest inhibitory effect (57.2% and 57.3%, respectively) on the PCDD/Fs formation, followed by CaHPO₄ with inhibition efficiency of 39.1%. In contrast, KH₂PO₄ and K₂HPO₄ barely inhibited the generation of the PCDD/Fs. The inhibitory effect of NH₄H₂PO₄ and (NH₄)₂·HPO₄ was similar to that of nitrogen-based inhibitors. At the same time, it was proven that the inhibitory activity of CaHPO₄ might be due to the reaction of it with Cu²⁺ forming stable compounds.

Co-processing of the MSWI flue gas in a lab-scale coal-fired drop-tube furnace

Coal-fired power plants are characterized by high combustion temperature and well-equipped air pollution control devices. The trace organic pollutants in the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) flue gas would be completely destroyed if the MSWI flue gas was injected into the high temperature area of a coal-fired boiler. In this study, the emission characteristics of common gas pollutants, heavy metals, and dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in both flue gas and bottom ash when the MSWI flue gas was injected into a lab-scale coal-fired drop-tube furnace were investigated. After co-processing, the concentrations of NOx, SO2, CO, and all heavy metals in the flue gas emitted from the coal-fired drop-tube furnace did not change a lot. However, the concentration of HCl in the flue gas from drop-tube furnace increased after coupling the MSWI flue gas. Moreover, the I-TEQ values of the PCDD/Fs in the flue gas and bottom ash after coupling the MSWI flue gas were 0.037 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 and 0.63 ng I-TEQ/g, respectively. The main formation pathways of PCDD/Fs in the flue gas of drop-tube furnace were suggested to be de novo synthesis and precursor synthesis. Furthermore, the effects of oxygen content and temperature on the formation of PCDD/Fs were also studied. The reduction efficiencies of the total amount of PCDD/Fs in the flue gas from the co-processing system were more than 60%, and even reached 90%. Therefore, co-processing of the MSWI flue gas in coal-fired power plants might be an environmentally friendly technology.

Concentrations and profiles of persistent organic pollutants unintentionally produced by secondary nonferrous metal smelters: Updated emission factors and diagnostic ratios for identifying sources

Secondary nonferrous metal smelters are important sources of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UPOPs) including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes, pentachlorobenzene, and hexachlorobenzene. Quantifying UPOP emissions by the main sources is an important step when evaluating UPOP emissions and establishing an inventory. In this study, field investigations were performed to allow UPOP emissions and distributions in stack gases emitted by secondary nonferrous metal smelters to be compared. A total of 25 stack gas samples were collected from secondary copper smelters (SCus), secondary zinc smelters, and secondary lead smelters in China. The mean toxic equivalent concentrations (TEQs) and mass concentrations of most of the UPOPs were highest in the secondary zinc smelter stack gas samples, next highest in the SCu stack gas samples, and lowest in the secondary lead smelter stack gas samples. The mean dioxin-like PCB and polychlorinated naphthalene TEQs were ∼8.9 and ∼6.6 times higher in stack gases from a SCu equipped with an oxygen-enriched smelting furnace than in stack gases from a SCu with a converter furnace. The mean PCB-118 to PCB-123 ratios and CN-10 to CN-35 ratios varied strongly and could be used as diagnostic ratios for apportioning the sources of UPOPs in the environment. Emission factors for dioxin-like PCBs, polychlorinated naphthalenes, pentachlorobenzene, and hexachlorobenzene in stack gases from secondary nonferrous metal smelters were derived and updated. The results improve our understanding of UPOP emission and provide data for establishing UPOP emission inventories for secondary nonferrous metal smelters.

Continuous nationwide atmospheric PCDD/F monitoring network in Taiwan (2006-2016): Variation in concentrations and apportionment of emission sources

Atmospheric polychlorinated-dibenzo-dioxins/dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) remains an important environmental health concern. Although the total emission inventories of PCDD/Fs in Taiwan decreased from 320 to 52.1 g-I-TEQ/year during 2002-2016, the resulting concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/F and distributions in Taiwan are unknown. We, therefore, conducted a comprehensive investigation of spatial and seasonal variations and apportioned potential sources of ambient PCDD/F concentrations in Taiwan-based on 11-year observation data. A total of 1,008 atmospheric PCDD/F samples were collected from 25 air monitoring stations (from seven areas) and 1 background station for 2006-2016. Linear regression was used to model changes in PCDD/F concentrations. Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were used to identify potential contributors. PCDD/F concentrations in the ambient air gradually decreased during the study period, with a median concentration of 28.2 fg I-TEQ/m3 over 11 years. The highest median PCDD/F concentrations were found in the highly industrialized regions of western Taiwan (38.0-43.4 fg I-TEQ/m3). Lower concentrations were found in eastern Taiwan (∼10 fg I-TEQ/m3). Background stations reported the lowest concentrations of PCDD/Fs, with a median concentration of 1.47 fg I-TEQ/m3. Overall, the concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/Fs in Taiwan were higher in winter (13.4-86.7 fg I-TEQ/m3) than in summer (9.65-27.2 fg I-TEQ/m3). The PCA results indicated that PCDD/F profiles varied by both region (industrialized, urbanized, and background areas) and season. The PMF model for the overall data revealed that the major sources of PCDD/Fs were industrial activities (71.2%). However, in less industrialized areas, traffic activities, long-range transport, and open burning were dominant.

New Data Set of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxin and Dibenzofuran Half-Lives: Natural Attenuation and Rhizoremediation Using Several Common Plant Species in a Weathered Contaminated Soil

In this paper, a new data set of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/Fs) half-lives (HLs) in soil is presented. Data are derived from a greenhouse experiment performed with an aged contaminated soil under semi-field conditions, obtained from a National Relevance Site (SIN) located in Northern Italy (SIN Brescia-Caffaro). Ten different treatments (combination of seven plant species with different soil conditions) were considered together with the respective controls (soil without plants). The ability of the plants to stimulate the biodegradation of these compounds was evaluated by measuring the PCDD/F concentration reduction in soil over a period of 18 months. The formation of new bound residues was excluded by using roots as a passive sampler of bioaccessible concentrations. The best treatment which significantly reduced PCDD/F concentrations in soil was the one with Festuca arundinacea (about 11-24% reduction, depending on the congener). These decreases reflected in HLs ranging from 2.5 to 5.8 years. Simulations performed with a dynamic air-vegetation-soil model (SoilPlusVeg) confirmed that these HLs were substantially due to biodegradation rather than other loss processes. Because no coherent PCDD/F degradation HL data sets are currently available for soil, they could substantially improve the predictions of soil remediation time, long-range transport, and food chain transfer of these chemicals using multimedia fate models.

Toxicity characterization of surface sediments from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon

The occurrence of bioactive compounds and contaminant-associated effects was assessed by means of in vivo and in vitro assays using different extractable fractions of surface sediments from a contaminated coastal lagoon (Mar Menor, SE Spain). Sediment elutriates and clean seawater, previously exposed to whole sediment, were used for assessing the in vivo toxicity on embryo development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Agonist and antagonist activities relating to estrogen and androgen receptors and agonist activities on aryl hydrocarbon receptor (expressed as ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities) were investigated in sediment extracts by using HER-Luc, AR-EcoScreenTM and fibroblast-like RTG-2 cell lines. Embryotoxicity effects were greater for sediment elutriates than those incubated in sediment-water interphase, implying that diffusion of bioactive chemicals can occur from sediments to sea water column, favoured by sediment disturbance events. In vitro results show the occurrence in extracts of compounds with estrogen antagonism, androgen antagonism and dioxin-like activities. Multidimensional scaling analysis classified the sampling sites into four sub-clusters according to their chemical-physical and biological similarities, relating in vitro bioactivity with the total organic carbon and known organic chemical load, with particular reference to total sum of PAHs, PCB 180, p,p-DDE and terbuthylazine. Overall, results pointed to the presence of unknown or unanalyzed biologically-active compounds in the sediments, mostly associated with the extracted polar fraction of the Mar Menor lagoon sediments. Our findings provide relevant information to be considered for the environmental management of contaminated coastal lagoons.

Adverse health effects for populations living near waste incinerators with special attention to hazardous waste incinerators. A review of the scientific literature

Incinerators of municipal, hazardous and medical wastes are sources of emissions of toxic pollutants, being polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, as well as a number of heavy metals of special concern. Moreover, waste incineration also generates ashes that must be properly disposed. In all countries, waste management is currently being an issue of tremendous importance. While the treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a problem in the entire world, in industrialized countries, the management of hazardous waste (HW) is an additional issue of important concern. While the available scientific information on the environmental impact and the health risks of MSWIs is quite considerable, that related with the potential adverse health effects for the populations living near HWIs is much more reduced. In this paper, we have reviewed the information on health effects-including the incidence of cancer and cancer mortality-for the people residing in the vicinity of HWIs. For a better understanding of the problem, some studies on cancer and other adverse health effects near MSWIs have been also reviewed. Special attention has been paid to the HWI of Constantí (Catalonia, Spain) on which the most complete information among all HWIs in the entire world is available. In our conclusions, a series of important issues/questions are raised: is really safe the limit value of 0.1 ng TEQ/Nm³ for PCDD/Fs to protect human health? Where are the evidences on this? On the other hand, to date, risk assessment studies have been only focused on certain substances; heavy metals and PCDD/Fs. Studies have not included those chemicals that are not routinely analyzed, being even some of them probably unknown right now. Moreover, what about potential interactions among chemicals in order to estimate the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for the population living near incinerators? Complete epidemiological studies are clearly necessary.

Emission characteristics of dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs, and dl-PCBs from secondary copper metallurgical plants: Control technology and policy

This study investigated the characteristics of dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs emitted from two typical secondary copper metallurgical plants processing copper sludge equipped with different sets of air pollution control devices (APCDs). Results indicated that the emission factors of dl-PCNs and PCDD/Fs of plant A are 0.00775 and 1.09 μg TEQ/ton, respectively, which are remarkably lower than those of plant B (3.12, 181 and 25.5 μg TEQ/ton for dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, respectively). Dl-PCNs contributed 0.7-2.7% of total TEQ for flue gases and up to 2.6% of TEQ for ash samples. The TEQ concentration of dl-PCNs in fly ash individually exceeds the regulated level of 1 ng TEQ/g regulated by Taiwan EPA, indicating that emission and discharge of dl-PCNs should be regulated. The combination of semidry scrubber and activated carbon injection (ACI) + baghouse (BH) is effective for simultaneous removals of dl-PCNs and PCDD/Fs in plant A; while the combination of cyclone, secondary combustion chamber, ACI + BH and wet scrubber (WS) is not optimal for removing dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. Memory effect occurring within BH and WS is responsible for low removal efficiencies of these POPs in plant B. This study suggests appropriate APCDs for simultaneous removal of three POP groups and recommends the inclusion of dl-PCNs in emission standard.

Assessment of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs and PBDEs in Mediterranean striped dolphins

Bio-accumulation of high levels of persistent organic pollutants represent a serious conservation concern for Mediterranean marine odontocetes. In this study, blubber samples from 10 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded along the Italian coasts during 2015-2016 were analyzed. All specimens showed dl-PCBs > PBDEs ≫ PCDD/Fs. Median concentrations were 1820 ng/g l.w., 456 ng/g l.w. and 23.9 pg/g l.w., respectively. dl-PCBs accounted for 93.3% of total TEQs. PBDE concentrations suggest that the Mediterranean basin may be considered a hotspot for organobromine compounds. OCDD did not represent the greatest contributor to PCDD/Fs profile, most likely due to a change in dioxin environmental sources in the last two-three decades. Despite international regulations, the present study emphasized that POP exposure levels in Mediterranean striped dolphins have not declined significantly in recent years. Toxicological and risk assessment studies on this sentinel species may provide an early indication of potential adverse health effects on Mediterranean ecosystems.

Environmental Exposure-Associated Human Health Risk of Dioxin Compounds in the Vicinity of a Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator in Shanghai, China

In order to assess environmental exposure-associated human health risk of dioxin compounds for the population in the vicinity of a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) in Shanghai, the atmospheric samples (n = 24) and soils samples (n = 96) were collected and analyzed to obtain the concentration level, pollution characteristics and seasonal changes of dioxin compounds in environmental medias. The toxicity equivalent concentration range of 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was 30.9-409 fg WHO-TEQ·m^-3 in atmosphere and 0.362-8.55 ng WHO-TEQ·kg^-1 in soil. The non-carcinogenic health risk and carcinogenic health risk from PCDD/Fs environmental exposure of people living in the vicinity of the MSWI in Shanghai were all within the allowable range of the US Environmental Protection Agency, which implied that the MSWI in Shanghai did not produce additional risk for the population living in its vicinity.

Detection of high PBDD/Fs levels and dioxin-like activity in toys using a combination of GC-HRMS, rat-based and human-based DR CALUX® reporter gene assays

Brominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) are increasingly reported at significant levels in various matrices, including consumer goods that are manufactured from plastics containing certain brominated flame retardants. PBDD/Fs are known ligands for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) but are not yet considered in the hazard assessment of dioxin mixtures. The aim of the present study was to determine if PBDD/Fs levels present in plastic constituents of toys could pose a threat to children's health. PBDD/Fs, unlike their chlorinated counterparts (PCDD/Fs), have not been officially assigned toxic equivalence factors (TEFs) by the WHO therefore, we determined their relative potency towards AhR activation in both human and rodent cell-based DR CALUX® bioassays. This allowed us to compare GC-HRMS PBDD/F congener levels, converted to total Toxic Equivalents (TEQ) by using the PCDD/F TEFs, to CALUX Bioanalytical Equivalents (BEQ) levels present in contaminated plastic constituents from children's toys. Finally, an estimate was made of the daily ingestion of TEQs from PBDD/Fs-contaminated plastic toys by child mouthing habits. It is observed that the daily ingestion of PBDD/Fs from contaminated plastic toys may significantly contribute to the total dioxin daily intake of young children.

The association between dioxins and steroid hormones in general adult males: a cross-sectional study in an e-waste region of China

As observed among residents in electronic waste (e-waste) recycling areas, dioxins can disrupt the homeostasis of endocrine hormones and the balance of thyroid hormones. Few studies, however, have examined whether e-waste recycling activities influence steroid hormone equilibrium in the general adult male population. This study evaluated the association between steroid hormones and the physical burdens of dioxins in the general adult male population residing in an e-waste region. In September 2017, 74 adult males residing in an e-waste dismantling region were enrolled in the current study. Approximately 10 mL of blood was collected from each adult male, and the serum samples were separated through centrifugation. Then, the levels of dioxin and steroid hormones in the serum of the participants were measured. We treated dioxin levels as categorical variables in the general linear model according to quartiles (25, 50, and 75 percentile). Comparing the findings with a reference group (< 25th percentile), we noted significantly higher dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) level in men with low serum polychlorinated dibenzofuran-toxic equivalent (PCDFs-TEQ) level between 3.80 and 6.31 pg/g lipid (1933 vs. 1447 pg/ml) and low polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans-TEQ (PCDD/PCDFs-TEQ) between 8.57 and 15.11 pg/g lipid (1996 vs. 1360 pg/ml). Moreover, a significantly higher androstenedione (A-dione) level was found in men whose serum PCDFs-TEQ ≥ 11.34 pg/g lipd (2404 vs. 1848). What's more, there were significantly higher 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) concentrations in low- and high-2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) groups (1.30-1.67 and ≥ 2.64 pg-TEQ/g lipid, respectively with 719 and 807 vs. 496, respectively). Our findings suggest that specific dioxin exposure may disturb normal DHEA, A-dione levels, and enzyme activity in the general adult male population in an e-waste region of China.

Atmospheric bulk deposition of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the vicinity of MSWI in Shanghai, China

Atmospheric bulk deposition samples were gathered month by month throughout a year at two sites in vicinity of a MSWI in Shanghai, to carry out an investigation on the atmospheric bulk deposition fluxes and seasonal variations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxinsand dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The atmospheric bulk deposition fluxes of PCDD/Fs ranged from 23.5 to 560 pg m^-2·d^-1 (1.01-23.9 pg WHO-TEQ·m^-2·d^-1), with an average value of 136 pg m^-2·d^-1 (5.08 pg WHO-TEQ·m^-2·d^-1) in the Vicinity of the MSWI in Shanghai. The measured concentrations were well compared with those from urban or industrial sites in other regions in China and abroad. The seasonal trend of atmospheric bulk deposition fluxes of PCDD/Fs throughout a year exhibited as high levels in summer, moderate levels in winter, and low levels in spring and autumn. The principal component analysis (PCA) indicated not only the MSWI, but also vehicle emission was the indispensable source of PCDD/Fs in the vicinity of the MSWI, especially for the urban areas. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) apportioned 5 source categories: MSWI, diesel vehicles, atmosphere background, industrial combustion and un-leaded gas vehicles, accounting for 43.3%, 38.1%, 6.89%, 6.19% and 5.50% in average, respectively of PCDD/Fs in atmospheric bulk deposition in the vicinity of the MSWI in Shanghai, China.

Generation and application of a Tg(cyp1a:egfp) transgenic marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) line as an in vivo assay to sensitively detect dioxin-like compounds in the environment

Large-range environmental pollution by dioxin and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) is becoming a serious problem. To establish an in vivo method for the detection of DLCs in seawater, a Tg(cyp1a-12DRE:egfp) transgenic marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) line was first developed with the modified cyp1a-12DRE promoter driving enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) expression using Tol2 transgenesis technology. With increasing concentrations of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the EGFP fluorescence intensity increased significantly. The Tg(cyp1a-12DRE:egfp) medaka possessed high sensitivity (limit of detection of 1 ng/L TCDD) and specificity and low background. This transgenic line is capable of detecting DLCs in environmental seawater in which the concentration of DLCs is at least 0.12207 ng/L TCDD after sample enrichment. The fluorescence-toxic equivalency (TEQ) values from EGFP intensity were closely correlated with the chemical-TEQ values obtained from chemical analyses. Furthermore, the Tg(cyp1a-12DRE:egfp) medaka can directly detect DLCs in seawater samples after a serious pollution accident and screen unknown aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonists for risk assessment. For the first time, a convenient method has been established that sensitively and specifically responds to DLCs using the Tg(cyp1a-12DRE:egfp) marine medaka, which could be a highly efficient tool for detecting seawater DLCs in the future.

Techno-economic assessment of an hydrometallurgical process to simultaneously remove As, Cr, Cu, PCP and PCDD/F from contaminated soil

Industrial activities lead to the contamination of large amounts of soils polluted by both inorganic and organic compounds, which are difficult to treat due to different chemical properties. The efficiency of a decontamination process developed to simultaneously remove mixed contamination of industrial soils was evaluated at the pilot-scale, as well as operating costs associated to that process to define the best remediation approach. The results showed that the treatment of the coarse fractions (>0.250 mm) of 40 kg of soil by attrition in countercurrent mode allowed the removal of 17-42% of As, 3-31% of Cr, 20-38% of Cu, and 64-75% of polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/F). Removals of 60% for As, 2.2% for Cr, 23% for Cu, and 74% for PCDD/F were obtained during the treatment of attrition sludge (<0.250 mm) by alkaline leaching process. However, the results of the techno-economic evaluation, carried out on a fixed plant with an annual treatment capacity of 7560 tons of soil treated (tst), showed that the estimated overall costs for the attrition process alone [scenario 1] (CAD$ 451/tst) were lower than the costs of the process, which additionally includes an alkaline leaching step to treat attrition sludge [scenario 2] (CAD$ 579/tst). This techno-economic evaluation also showed that the process becomes competitive with current disposal options (thermal desorption and landfilling - CAD$ 600/tst) from a certain treatment capacity, which is around of 3465 tst/yr for the scenario 1 and 6930 tst/yr for the scenario 2. On the other hand, the techno-economic evaluations are crucial to selecting feasible decontamination process for a soil remediation project, with considerations of the type of contamination, site characteristics and cost effectiveness.

Concentrations, Sources, and Potential Human Health Risks of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PAHs in Rural Atmosphere Around Chemical Plants in Jiangsu Province, China

Concentrations and sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a rural atmosphere near industrial zones in Jiangsu, China were determined and the associated risks were assessed. The concentrations of ΣPCDD/Fs, ΣPCBs, and ΣPAHs ranged from 11.9-57.7 pg·m^-3, 0.58-2.71 pg m^-3, and 11-18 ng m^-3, respectively. Principal component analysis suggested that the contamination of air with PCDD/Fs and PCBs mainly originated from industrial activities and combustion processes. In contrast, the major source of PAHs was the combustion of petroleum, coal, and biomass. These data were used to estimate the exposure of the population living nearby to these persistent organic pollutants and to evaluate the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with their inhalation. Our study are likely to be helpful for developing and implementing regulation strategies for PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PAHs in the atmosphere around industrial and surrounding residential areas.

Dioxin-like compounds in paired maternal serum and breast milk under long sampling intervals

Serum and breast milk are both important biological samples to evaluate body burden of dioxin-like compounds which include polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs). We collected maternal serum at early pregnancy, and breast milk at 3-8 weeks after delivery from 55 mothers living in Beijing, China, and measured 29 dioxin-like compounds in these samples. The sampling intervals in this study were extended up to 10 months to analyze differences of contents between serum and breast milk under long sampling intervals. The results showed that mean TEq level of PCDD/Fs in serum (9.8 pg TEq g^-1 lipid) was 1.7 times higher than that in milk (4.5 pg TEq g^-1 lipid), while the TEq concentrations of dl-PCBs in serum (1.2 pg TEq g^-1 lipid) was significantly lower than that in milk (2.0 pg TEq g^-1 lipid). There were only two congeners, OCDD (r = 0.32) and PCB105 (r = 0.33), the correlations of which between serum and milk were significant. The differences in distributions of congeners in serum and milk might be influenced by number of chlorine substituents and structures of congeners. In addition, maternal age and BMI were positively and negatively correlated with mass concentrations of dioxin-like compounds in milk and serum respectively. These results suggest that, compared with serum, it is limited to use breast milk to assess long-term exposure for the wider population.

Assessing Benthic Bioaccumulation of Polychlorinated Dioxins/Furans and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the Lower Passaic River (NJ, USA) Based on In Situ Passive Sampling

Passive sampling has emerged as a promising tool to assess the presence of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOC) in water, sediment, and biota, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Previous work evaluated the ability of passive samplers to predict the bioavailability of sedimentary HOCs mostly in the laboratory, often for marine organisms. The present study assessed the use of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to derive freely dissolved concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in porewater in situ versus ex situ and in river water. An LDPE-based multisampler system was deployed at 4 locations along the lower Passaic River (NJ, USA) in sediment and the water column, where sediment and benthic species samples were also collected. Good agreement was generally observed for PCDD/F and PCB concentrations comparing in situ and ex situ approaches (within 0.30-39%). Significant linear relationships were derived between log LDPE-based and log lipid-based concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs. The in situ multisampler system showed promise to derive HOC concentrations in porewater and river water and to predict the bioaccumulation potential of HOCs in benthic biota. Variations of PCDD/Fs emissions from secondary nonferrous smelting plants and towards to their source emission reduction

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are cancerogenic organic pollutants that priority controlled by Stockholm Convention with globally 183 signatories now. Secondary nonferrous smelting plants are confirmed to be important sources in China due to its large industrial activities and high emissions of PCDD/Fs. It is important to prioritize source to achieve source emission reduction by conducting field monitoring on typical case plants. Here, the emission profiles and levels of PCDD/Fs were investigated in 25 stack gas samples collected from three secondary copper production (SeCu), two secondary zinc production (SeZn) and two secondary lead production (SePb). Both average mass concentration and toxic equivalency quantity (TEQ) concentrations of PCDD/Fs all generally decreased in the order: SeCu > SeZn > SePb. It is noteworthy that the mean TEQ concentration in stack gas from SeCu with oxygen-enrich melting furnace technology, at 2.7 ng I-TEQ/Nm³, was much higher than the concentrations of other smelting processes. The average emission factors and annual release amounts of PCDD/Fs from SeCu, SePb and SeZn investigated were 28.4, 1.5, 10.4 μg I-TEQ/t and 1.03, 0.023, 0.17 g I-TEQ/year, respectively. The ratios of 2,3,7,8-TCDF to 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDF and OCDD to 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD varied to large extent for three metal smelting, which could be used as diagnostic ratios of tracing specific PCDD/Fs sources. Addition of copper-containing sludge into the raw materials might lead to higher PCDD/Fs emissions. It is important to emphasize and reduce the PCDD/Fs emissions from oxygen-enrich melting furnace from secondary copper productions.

Mapping polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans in soils around Pugu municipal dump site in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Implications on dermal and soil ingestion exposure for people in the peripheral

Experimental data on the contribution of a dump site in Tanzania as a point source of the 17 possible congeners of PCDD/Fs to the environment is presented. Dry and wet season samples were collected around Pugu municipal dump site followed by GCxGC-TOFMS analysis. The dominant congeners were OctaCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HepCDF; 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HeptaCDD and 1,2,4,7-PeCDD. The concentrations of the congeners expressed as TEQ WHO₂₀₀₅ ranged from 11.69 to 48.97 pg/g with a mean of 29.44 pg/g for the dry season and TEQ WHO₂₀₀₅ 4.13-85.82 pg/g with a mean of 41.51 pg/g for the wet season. These levels were speculated high enough to accumulate in free-range chickens and cause harmful effects to humans that consumed them especially residents around Pugu dump site. Exposure of people to PCDD/Fs through dermal absorption and soil ingestion were estimated using the VLIER-HUMAAN Mathematical model. Exposure through dermal absorption was estimated to be 1.2 × 10^-4 and 9.8 × 10^-6 ng TEQ/kg day for children and adults respectively while through soil ingestion via consumption of contaminated foods and other sources was 0.0045 and 0.27 ng TEQ/kg day for children and adults respectively. These values however were well below the WHO tolerable daily intake. Generally, there was no significant variation for total PCDD/Fs in the dry and wet season (α = 0.08). Strong positive correlation (r = 0.94) between total PCDD/Fs and organic matter content was observed during the wet season.
