Abstract
Brazil has the largest buffalo herd outside the Asian continent, with more than 1.5 million head. As buffalo farming has become an economically important activity, studies on the occurrence of pathogens shared between cattle and buffalo are necessary. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular occurrence of piroplasmids and bacterial agents (Anaplasmataceae and Coxiellaceae) potentially transmitted by vectors in buffaloes in southeastern Brazil using molecular methods. DNA was extracted from blood samples of 81 buffaloes, 165 Rhipicephalus microplus ticks, and 92 Haematopinus tuberculatus lice collected from buffaloes in the municipality of Passos, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples were subjected to conventional PCR (cPCR) assays based on three endogenous genes, namely gapdh from mammals, 16S rRNA from ticks, and cox-1 from lice. Positive samples from these PCR assays were then submitted to a real-time PCR (qPCR) assay targeting IS1111 of Coxiella burnetii, cPCR for Ehrlichia spp. (dsb gene), and nested-PCR assays targeting the 18S rRNA gene of Piroplasmida, sbp-2 of Babesia bovis, and rap-1α of Babesia bigemina. All buffalo and ectoparasite DNA samples tested positive in the PCR assays for the endogenous genes. All samples were negative in the qPCR for C. burnetii and nested PCR for B. bigemina (rap-1α). For Ehrlichia spp., 6/257 (2.3%) ectoparasites (five ticks and one louse) tested positive, with BLASTn analysis showing 88.04% to 100% identity with Ehrlichia minasensis. In the nPCR for piroplasmids (18S rRNA), 8/81 (9.9%) buffaloes and one tick (0.7%) tested positive, with BLASTn analysis showing > 99.9% identity with B. bovis and B. bigemina. In the nPCR for B. bovis (sbp-2), 1/81 buffalo (1.2%) was positive. This study demonstrated, for the first time, the occurrence and co-infection of tick-borne hemoparasites in buffaloes and associated ectoparasites in southeastern Brazil. The lack of positivity for E. minasensis and low molecular occurrence for B. bovis and B. bigemina among buffaloes sampled may be associated with the higher resistance of this ruminant species to R. microplus ticks and vectored pathogens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Usually, a hypoglycemic episode occurs due to inadequacy of the administered insulin dose in accordance with the current physiological situation. Activated systems aimed at increasing blood glucose levels serve as precursors of hypoglycemia and markers of the severity of hyperinsulinemia. Therefore, determining their components can serve as a more subtle and sensitive approach to assessing the physiological appropriateness of different insulin therapy options. AIM To investigate the markers (biochemical, clinical, and morphological) and the degree of activation of the stress system preceding the development of hypoglycemic episodes in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) undergoing insulin therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional observational clinical study was conducted involving 74 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). All patients underwent examination, which included assessment of the history of hypoglycemic episodes, quality of life using the SF-36 questionnaire, levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), cortisol, C-reactive protein (CRP), coagulation profile, and 24-hour urinary cortisol excretion. Evaluation of patients' sleep characteristics was performed based on the results of completed questionnaires: Sleep Questionnaire and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Patients underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG) with interpretation according to the AASM 2012 standards. RESULTS Patients with a higher frequency of hypoglycemic episodes showed a decrease in IGF-1 levels at all stages (140 [123:162]; 98 [93:121], p=0.005), worse quality of life scores across all domains of the SF-36 questionnaire (95 [88:100]; 84 [77:92], p=0.001). As the frequency of hypoglycemic episodes increased, polysomnography data revealed an increase in the number of awakenings lasting more than 3 minutes (2 [1:3]; 3 [2:4]; p=0.03), increased time spent in bed (493.1 [463.95:513.4]; 536.2 [511.6:551]; p=0.03), increased sleep duration (437.5 [430.05:468]; 489 [471.5:519], p=0.006), and in creased total sleep time (382.5 [321.75:422]; 439 [409.5:486], p=0.008). CONCLUSION An increase in the frequency of hypoglycemic episodes should be accompanied by activation of the stress response system; however, repeated episodes of hypoglycemia lead to depletion of the stress response system, as evidenced by a decrease in the level of IGF-1 in patients with frequent hypoglycemic episodes. Hypoglycemic episodes occurring not only during night time but also at other times disrupt the sleep structure by increasing the frequency of nocturnal awaken ings.

Abstract
Alienation has been used as a crucial concept to describe the negative psychosocial impacts that stem from the ways production and consumption are organised in Marxist and non-Marxist traditions. The psychosocial impacts it generates are mediated through stress pathways to increase non-communicable physical and mental illnesses. There has been little empirical research on the impact of alienation on health and ways in which the impact might be reduced. This paper sets out an Alienation, Health and Well-being research agenda. We propose two hypotheses: (1) that processes of production and consumption in 21st century capitalism leads to alienation which underpins a significant degree of mental illness and non-communicable disease; and (2) reductions in prevalence of mental illness and non-communicable disease requires public policies which regulate market behaviour in favour of measures which reduce the alienating impacts of processes of production and consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND From the original studies investigating the effects of adrenal gland secretion to modern high-throughput multidimensional analyses, stress research has been a topic of scientific interest spanning just over a century. SUMMARY The objective of this review was to provide historical context for influential discoveries, surprising findings, and preclinical models in stress-related neuroimmune research. Furthermore, we summarize this work and present a current understanding of the stress pathways and their effects on the immune system and behavior. We focus on recent work demonstrating stress-induced immune changes within the brain and highlight studies investigating stress effects on microglia. Lastly, we conclude with potential areas for future investigation concerning microglia heterogeneity, bone marrow niches, and sex differences. KEY MESSAGES Stress is a phenomenon that ties together not only the central and peripheral nervous system, but the immune system as well. The cumulative effects of stress can enhance or suppress immune function, based on the intensity and duration of the stressor. These stress-induced immune alterations are associated with neurobiological changes, including structural remodeling of neurons and decreased neurogenesis, and these contribute to the development of behavioral and cognitive deficits. As such, research in this field has revealed important insights into neuroimmune communication as well as molecular and cellular mediators of complex behaviors relevant to psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Substantial evidence has shown that the Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Kaput (Clock) gene is a core transcription factor of circadian rhythms that regulates dopamine (DA) synthesis. To shed light on the mechanism of this interaction, flexible multielectrode arrays (MEAs) are developed that can measure both DA concentrations and electrophysiology chronically. The dual functionality is enabled by conducting polymer PEDOT doped with acid-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT). The PEDOT/CNT microelectrode coating maintained stable electrochemical impedance and DA detection by square wave voltammetry for 4 weeks in vitro. When implanted in wild-type (WT) and Clock mutation (MU) mice, MEAs measured tonic DA concentration and extracellular neural activity with high spatial and temporal resolution for 4 weeks. A diurnal change of DA concentration in WT is observed, but not in MU, and a higher basal DA concentration and stronger cocaine-induced DA increase in MU. Meanwhile, striatal neuronal firing rate is found to be positively correlated with DA concentration in both animal groups. These findings offer new insights into DA dynamics in the context of circadian rhythm regulation, and the chronically reliable performance and dual measurement capability of this technology hold great potential for a broad range of neuroscience research.

Abstract
During hospitalization horses may develop gastrointestinal conditions triggered by a stress-associated weak local immune system. The prospective, clinical trial was conducted to find out whether fecal immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentrations could be determined in hospitalized horses and how they changed during hospitalization and in response to various stressors. Samples were obtained from 110 horses and a control group (n = 14). At arrival in the hospital, horses were categorized into pain grades (1-5), and elective versus strenuous surgery (> 2 hours, traumatic and emergency procedures). Feces were collected on day 1, day 2, day 3, and day 7 in all horses. Blood samples were obtained at the same intervals, but additionally after general anaesthesia in horses undergoing surgery (day 2). IgA concentration in feces was determined by ELISA and measured in optical density at 450nm. The control group showed constant IgA concentrations on all days (mean value 0.30 OD450 ±SD 0.11, 1.26 mg/g; n = 11). After general anaesthesia fecal IgA concentrations decreased considerably independent of duration and type of surgery (P < 0.001 for elective and P = 0.043 for traumatic surgeries). High plasma cortisol concentrations were weakly correlated with low fecal IgA on the day after surgery (P = 0.012, day 3, correlation coefficient r = 0.113). Equine fecal IgA concentrations showed a decline associated with transport, surgery, and hospitalization in general, indicating that stress has an impact on the local intestinal immune function and may predispose horses for developing gastrointestinal diseases such as enterocolitis.

Abstract
Handedness, a complex human aspect that reflects the functional lateralization of the hemispheres, also interacts with the immune system. This study aimed to expand the knowledge of the lateralization of hand, foot, and eye activities in patients with immune-mediated (IM) or other (noIM) neurological diseases and to clarify the properties of the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) in an Italian population. Three hundred thirty-four patients with IM or noIM diseases affecting the brain or spine and peripheral nervous system were interviewed about stressful events preceding the disease, subjective handedness, and familiarity for left-handedness or ambidexterity. The patients and 40 healthy subjects underwent EHI examination. In the whole group of participants, 24 items of the EHI were classified into five factors (Hand Transitive, Hand Refined, Hand Median, Foot, Eye), demonstrating good reliability and validity. Chronological age had a significant influence on hand and foot EHI factors and the laterality quotient (LQ), particularly on writing and painting. In the patient groups, EHI factors and the LQ were also predicted by age of disease onset, duration of disease, and family history of left-handedness or ambidexterity. No differences were found between patients and healthy subjects, but pencil use scored significantly lower in patients with IM diseases than in those with noIM brain diseases. These results demonstrate that the lateralization of hand and foot activities is not a fixed human aspect, but that it can change throughout life, especially for abstract and symbolic activities. Chronic neurological diseases can cause changes in handedness. This may explain why, unlike systemic immunological diseases, IM neurological diseases are not closely associated with left-handedness. In these patients, the long version of the EHI is appropriate for determining the lateralization of body activities to contextualize the neurological picture; therefore, these findings extend the Italian normative data sets.

Abstract
College students experience ever-increasing levels of stress, leading to a wide range of health problems. In this context, monitoring and predicting students' stress levels is crucial and, fortunately, made possible by the growing support for data collection via mobile devices. However, predicting stress levels from mobile phone data remains a challenging task, and off-the-shelf deep learning models are inapplicable or inefficient due to data irregularity, inter-subject variability, and the "cold start problem". To overcome these challenges, we developed a platform named Branched CALM-Net that aims to predict students' stress levels through dynamic clustering in a personalized manner. This is the first platform that leverages the branching technique in a multitask setting to achieve personalization and continuous adaptation. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in predicting student stress from mobile sensor data collected as part of the Dartmouth StudentLife study, with a ROC AUC 37% higher and a PR AUC surpassing that of the nearest baseline models. In the cold-start online learning setting, Branched CALM-Net outperforms other models, attaining an average F1 score of 87% with just 1 week of training data for a new student, which shows it is reliable and effective at predicting stress levels from mobile data.

Background To determine the relationships between attachment style, social support, and mental health states, as well as the mediation mechanism within this relationship, we conducted a survey among healthcare workers during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic quarantine. Methods The survey assessed their mental health states, adult attachment style, social support, and some other relevant information. Mental health states were represented by the overall state of sleep, physical and emotional assessment. A multiple mediator model was used to explain how social support could mediate the relationship between attachment and mental health states during COVID-19 quarantine. Results Our findings revealed that 33.3% of the participants experienced emotional issues, 8.5% had sleep problems, and 24.9% reported physical discomfort. The direct effect of adult attachment styles on mental health states during COVID-19 quarantine was significant (c' = -0.3172; p < 0.01). The total indirect effect also showed statistical significance (ab = -0.1857; p < 0.01). Moreover, the total effect of adult attachment styles on mental health states was -0.5029 (c = -0.5029; p < 0.01). Subjective social support and utilization of social support play mediating roles in the relationship between attachment style and mental health states, respectively (ab1 = -0.1287, 95% CI: -0.9120 to -0.3341, ab2 = 0.0570, 95% CI: -0.4635 to -0.1132). Conclusion These findings highlight social support played a mediation role between attachment style and mental health states. Thus, offering social support during a crisis might be useful for those individuals with an insecure attachment.

Abstract
Through a 30-day experiment, this study investigated the effects of five photoperiods (0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D, 18L:6D, and 24L:0D) on the survival, enzyme activity, body color, and growth-related gene expression of redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) juveniles. The results showed that C. quadricarinatus juveniles under 18L:6D and 24L:0D photoperiods exhibited the highest survival rate, which was significantly higher than the survival rates of juveniles under the other three photoperiods (p < 0.05). However, the 0L:24D group had the highest final body weight and weight gain rate, significantly surpassing those of the 12L:12D, 18L:6D, and 24L:0D groups (p < 0.05). Regarding enzyme activity and hormone levels, juveniles under the 18L:6D photoperiod exhibited relatively higher activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), acid phosphatase (ACP), and lysozyme (LZM) enzymes than those under other photoperiods, but their levels of melatonin and cortisol were relatively low. In addition, the 24L:0D group showed the highest malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Analysis of gene expression levels revealed that retinoid X receptor (RXR) and α-amylase (α-AMY) genes in C. quadricarinatus juveniles exhibited significantly higher expression levels under the 18L:6D photoperiod than those under the other four photoperiods (p < 0.05). With increasing daylight exposure, the body color of C. quadricarinatus changed from pale blue to yellow-brown. In summary, C. quadricarinatus juveniles achieved high survival rates, good growth performance, strong antioxidant stress response, and immune defense capabilities under an 18 h photoperiod. Therefore, in the industrial seedling cultivation of redclaw crayfish, it is recommended to provide 18 h of daily light. Further, the study demonstrated the ability to manipulate the body color of C. quadricarinatus through controlled artificial photoperiods. These findings provide essential technical parameters needed for the industrial cultivation of C. quadricarinatus juveniles.

Abstract
Many autoimmune disorders exhibit flares in which symptoms erupt and then decline, as exemplified by multiple sclerosis (MS) in its relapsing-remitting form. Existing mathematical models of autoimmune flares often assume regular oscillations, failing to capture the stochastic and non-periodic nature of flare-ups. We suggest that autoimmune flares are driven by excitable dynamics triggered by stochastic events auch as stress, infection and other factors. Our minimal model, involving autoreactive and regulatory T-cells, demonstrates this concept. Autoimmune response initiates antigen-induced expansion through positive feedback, while regulatory cells counter the autoreactive cells through negative feedback. The model explains the decrease in MS relapses during pregnancy and the subsequent surge postpartum, based on lymphocyte dynamics. Additionally, it identifies potential therapeutic targets, predicting significant reduction in relapse rate from mild adjustments of regulatory T cell activity or production. These findings indicate that excitable dynamics may underlie flare-ups across various autoimmune disorders, potentially informing treatment strategies.

Abstract
Intrinsic stressors associated with life-history stages may alter the responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and responses to extrinsic stressors. We administered adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) to 24 free-ranging adult female northern elephant seals (NESs) at two life-history stages: early and late in their molting period and measured a suite of endocrine, immune, and metabolite responses. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of extended, high-energy fasting on adrenal responsiveness. Animals were blood sampled every 30 min for 120 min post-ACTH injection, then blood was sampled 24 h later. In response to ACTH injection, cortisol levels increased 8- to 10-fold and remained highly elevated compared with baseline at 24 h. Aldosterone levels increased 6- to 9-fold before returning to baseline at 24 h. The magnitude of cortisol and aldosterone release were strongly associated, and both were greater after extended fasting. We observed an inverse relationship between fat mass and the magnitude of cortisol and aldosterone responses, suggesting that body reserves influenced adrenal responsiveness. Sustained elevation in cortisol was associated with alterations in thyroid hormones; both tT3 and tT4 concentrations were suppressed at 24 h, while rT3 increased. Immune cytokine IL-1β was also suppressed after 24 h of cortisol elevation, and numerous acute and sustained impacts on substrate metabolism were evident. Our data suggest that female NESs are more sensitive to stress after the molt fast and that acute stress events can have important impacts on metabolism and immune function. These findings highlight the importance of considering life-history context when assessing the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on wildlife.

Abstract
The tick-borne haemoprotozoan diseases are major constraint in the health and production of cattle and causes substantial losses to the livestock industry throughout the world. Tripura is a northeastern state of India characterized by a warm humid tropical climate and high rainfall which is conducive to the multiplication of vector-ticks of haemoprotozoan diseases. A total of 320 tick-infested cattle (22 male and 298 female) of either sex was selected randomly from different district of Tripura for the detection of carrier cattle infected with tick-borne haemoparasites from July, 2017 to June, 2019. Out of 320 tick-infected cattle, 4.69% prevalence of B. bigemina infection in cattle was found while Theleria spp. was not prevalent in the collected blood sample by using polymerase chain reaction. The prevalence of B. bigemina was significantly (< 0.05) higher in cattle more than 3 years of age (6.72%) compared to the 1-3 years age group (3.97%) and < 1 year age groups (1.66%). Sex-wise B. bigemina infection was significantly (< 0.05) seen only in female (5.03%) cattle infested with ticks. The district-wise B. bigemina prevalence (%) in Tripura was as in cattle; Dhalai (0.63), Sipahijala (0.31), Khowai (0.31), Gomati (0.31), South Tripura (0.63), North Tripura (0.31), Unakoti (0.31) and West Tripura (1.87) respectively. The use of PCR assays for the detection of B. bigemina and Theileria spp. in the North Eastern state of Tripura of India showed prevalence of 4.69% and 0%, respectively in tick-infested cattle. This study is the first report about the prevalence of tick-borne haemoprotozoan diseases from cattle of Tripura and suggest that babesiosis is more common disease as compared to theileriosis and is more prevalent in adult female tick-infested cattle in Tripura.

Abstract
Previously, a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP) was shown to positively alter fecal microbiota, fecal metabolites, oxidative stress, and circulating immune cell function of adult dogs. The objective of this study was to measure the effects of SCFP on fecal characteristics, serum oxidative stress biomarkers, and whole blood gene expression of dogs undergoing transport stress. Sixteen adult pointer dogs [8M, 8F; mean age = 6.7 ± 2.1 yr; mean body weight (BW) = 25.5 ± 3.9 kg] were used in a randomized crossover design study. All dogs were fed a control diet for 4 wk, then randomly assigned to a control or SCFP-supplemented diet (formulated to include approximately 0.13% of the active SCFP ingredient) and fed to maintain BW for 11 wk. A 6-wk washout preceded the second 11-wk experimental period with dogs receiving opposite treatments. After 11 wk, fresh fecal and blood samples were collected before and after transport in a van for 45 min. Change from baseline data (i.e., before and after transport) were analyzed using the Mixed Models procedure of SAS 9.4, with P < 0.05 being significant and P < 0.10 being trends. Change in serum malondialdehyde concentrations increased (P < 0.05) and serum 8-isoprostane concentrations tended to increase (P < 0.10) in dogs fed SCFP, but decreased (P < 0.05) in control dogs after transport. Other serum markers were unaffected by diet during transport stress. Fecal dry matter percentage tended to be affected (P < 0.10) by diet during transport stress, being reduced in control dogs, but stable in dogs fed SCFP. Other fecal characteristics were unaffected by diet during transport stress. Genes associated with activation of innate immunity were impacted by diet in response to transport stress, with blood cyclooxygenase-2 and malondialdehyde mRNA expression being increased (P < 0.05) in control dogs, but stable or decreased in dogs fed SCFP. Expression of other genes was unaffected by diet during transport stress. These data suggest that the benefits of feeding a SCFP during transport stress may be mediated through suppression of innate immune cell activation.

Abstract
Research suggests that specific behavior patterns may be related with the outcome and vulnerability of a COVID-19 infection; nevertheless, much of this information has been obtained by means of psychological paradigms that are not based on research conducted using experimental designs. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to identify behavior patterns associated with COVID-19 outcome and vulnerability from the point of view of the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory. A total of 464 college students from Mexico-City participated in the study. Participants answered the Behavior Inhibition, Behavior Activation scales (Carver & White, 1994), the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Personality Questionnaire (Corr & Cooper, 2016) and a COVID-19 symptom checklist. Data showed that those individuals who respond in an enthusiastic way to rewards develop less symptoms of COVID-19. Additionally, individuals who are keen in the exploration and identification of new rewarding opportunities are less likely to develop a COVID-19 infection. Both findings suggest that a potent Behavior Activation System could protect individuals during the present pandemic. These results are in general agreement with others produced within the same framework.

Abstract
Fatigue is a phenomenon associated with decreases in both physical and cognitive performances and increases in injury occurrence. Competitive athletes are required to complete demanding training programs with high workloads to elicit the physiological and musculoskeletal adaptations plus skill acquisition necessary for performance. High workloads, especially sudden rapid increases in training loads, are associated with the occurrence of fatigue. At present, there is limited evidence elucidating the underlying mechanisms associating the fatigue generated by higher workloads and with an increase in injury risk. The multidimensional nature and manifestation of fatigue have led to differing definitions and dichotomies of the term. Consequently, a plethora of physiological, biochemical, psychological and performance markers have been proposed to measure fatigue and recovery. Those include self-reported scales, countermovement jump performance, heart rate variability, and saliva and serum biomarker analyses. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of fatigue and recovery plus methods of assessments.

Abstract
Use of artificial at night (ALAN) exposes the world to continuously increasing levels and distribution of light pollution. Our understanding of the adverse effects of ALAN is based mostly on observational or laboratory studies, and its effects are probably underestimated. Demonstration of direct experimental fitness consequences of ALAN on mammals is missing. We studied the effects of chronic light pollution at different wavelengths on fitness and glucocorticoid hormone levels under semi-natural conditions in two closely related species: the nocturnal common spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) and the diurnal golden spiny mouse (Acomys russatus). Our results clearly demonstrate the adverse effects of ALAN exposure on the fitness of both nocturnal and diurnal species, manifested by changes in cortisol levels and reproductive timing, reduced reproductive output and reduced survival, which differed between species and wavelengths. In A. russatus exposure to blue ALAN had the strongest effect on fitness, followed by white and yellow ALAN exposure. In A. cahirinus the results are more complex and suggest it suffered from the combined effects of ALAN and competition. Our research shows that light pollution presents a real threat to both nocturnal and diurnal species, affecting the species fitness directly and through interspecific interactions. Worryingly, these effects are probably not limited to spiny mice. The clear adverse effects we documented, as well as the differences between wave lengths, contribute to our ability to present science-based recommendations to decision makers regarding the use of artificial light at night. Such information and guidelines are highly important nowadays when lighting systems are being replaced to promote energy efficiency.

Abstract
Durante as duas últimas décadas, têm sido ressaltados os problemas somáticos, psíquicos e sociais de pacientes com câncer, bem como têm sido focalizadas, no âmbito do estudo oncolágico, as teorias hiopsicossociais e psiconeuroimunológicas. O presente trabalho apresenta considerações clínicas sobre esses aspectos, ressaltando-se o impacto que o câncer provoca sobre os pacientes e seus familiares. O câncer e seus tratamentos constituem uma fonte de estresse, capaz de desencadear desordens de ajustamento nestes indivíduos. A mensuração da qualidade de vida deve ser incorporada aos estudos clínicos, porque a sua inclusão tende a melhorar as indicações terapêuticas. Os relatos de pacientes sobre sintomas somáticos são associados, principalmente, às suas preocupações emocionais e sociais mais do que ao seu estado geral de saúde. A equipe responsável pelos pacientes deve compreender a dinâmica envolvida no binômio família-paciente e conhecer a influência que os fatores psicossociais exercem sobre ele. A falha do reconhecimento dessa influência e, conseqüentemente, o prejuízo provocado no suporte psicossocial da família irão privar os pacientes do conforto, amor, suporte e companheirismo de que eles precisarão através do curso da sua doença. Os médicos devem ser capazes de identificar e estimular circunstâncias que facilitem o processo de adaptação de seus pacientes. O tratamento psicológico, em pelo menos alguma extensão, sempre é benéfico.

Abstract
Distress is a growing public health concern. In this three-armed randomized controlled trial, n = 102 adults with elevated stress levels and stress-related symptoms were randomly assigned to (1) “integrative” yoga classes which combined physical exercises, mindfulness training, and ethical/philosophical aspects of traditional yoga; to (2) Iyengar yoga classes which entailed primarily physical exercises; or to (3) mindfulness training without physical training. We hypothesized the synergistic effects of physical yoga exercises, mindfulness, and ethical/philosophical aspects. The primary outcome was the group difference on Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) after 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes included burnout, quality of life, physical complaints, depression, anxiety, mindfulness, interoceptive awareness, self-regulation, spirituality, mysticism, and posttraumatic stress. All outcomes were evaluated at baseline (V0), after 12 weeks (V1), and after 24 weeks (V2). A subset of participants took part in qualitative interviews. A lasting and clinically relevant stress reduction was observed within all groups (PSS ΔV0−V1Integrative Yoga = −6.69 ± 6.19; ΔV0−V1Iyengar Yoga = −6.00 ± 7.37; ΔV0−V1Mindfulness = −9.74 ± 7.80; all p < 0.00). Effect sizes were also statistically large at the end of the follow-up period (Cohen’s d Integrative Yoga = 1.41; d Iyengar Yoga = 1.37; d Mindfulness = 1.23). There were no significant group differences or evidence of relevant synergistic effects from combining mindfulness and physical yoga exercises. All three interventions were found to be equally effective methods of stress reduction. Their use in practice should be based on availability and patient preference.

Abstract
Transposable elements, also known as "jumping genes," have the ability to hop within the host genome. Nonetheless, this capacity is kept in check by the host cell defense systems to avoid unbridled TE mobilization. Different types of stressors can activate TEs in Drosophila, suggesting that TEs may play an adaptive role in the stress response, especially in generating genetic variability for adaptive evolution. TE activation by stressors may also lead to the notion, usually found in the literature, that any form of stress could activate all or the majority of TEs. In this review, we define what stress is. We then present and discuss RNA sequencing results from several studies demonstrating that stress does not trigger TE transcription broadly in Drosophila. An explanation for the LTR order of TEs being the most overexpressed is also proposed.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effect of seasonal heat stress on the physiological, behavioural and blood bio-chemical profile of adult Ghoongroo pigs (1.5-2 years of age) of different physiological groups. Thirty Ghoongroo pigs (10 boars, 10 non-pregnant sows and 10 pregnant sows) were allotted to individual pens. The study continued for 1 year covering three main seasons, i.e. summer (March-June), rainy (July-October) and winter (November-February) season. Temperature humidity index was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in summer (83.2 ± 0.47) followed by rainy (68.5 ± 1.13) and winter (66.8 ± 0.67) seasons, which indicated that pigs were exposed to heat stress during summer. Rectal temperature and pulse rate were not affected by group × season interaction but were affected by group (P = 0.002) and season (P < 0.001), which were usually greater during summer than during winter and in boars than in pregnant sows. Respiration rate was affected by group × season interaction (P = 0.002), which was greater in boars than in non-pregnant and pregnant sows during summer and rainy season but was similar in winter among the groups. Total erythrocytes, leucocytes counts, and cortisol levels were influenced by group (P < 0.001), season (P < 0.001) and group × season interaction (P < 0.001), which increased in summer compared with winter. Sodium and potassium concentrations in serum were not affected by group and group × season interaction but were affected by season (P < 0.001), which were lower in summer than in winter. All behaviour activities (standing, resting and roaming time, urination, fighting and drinking frequency) were affected by group (P < 0.001), season (P < 0.001) and group × season interaction (P < 0.001), except eating time that was only influenced by season. The present study suggested that Ghoongroo pigs experienced heat stress during summer, which was reflected in physiological, blood-biochemical and behavioural alterations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Stress is not experienced the same by everyone. Some individuals, such as individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are at risk of heightened sensitivity to stress responses. ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder commonly characterised by deficits in social communication and social interaction. Among different stressor stimuli, social stressors are particularly worth our attention due to the social and communication challenges inherent in ASD. This study aims to systematically evaluate different social stressor stimuli in eliciting physiological reactivity in ASD, focusing on the children and adolescent population. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We designed a study protocol for this study and submitted it to PROSPERO for systematic review registration. Any studies with children and adolescents with ASD between the ages of 0 and 18 in clinical and community settings will be included. All types of social stressor interventions will be included. The outcome of interest will include studies with physiological activity of the participants being measured, for example, measures related to autonomic functioning, electrodermal functioning and cortisol level. The primary literature sources will be across four electronic databases: MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo and CINAHL in August 2021. The second source of literature will be across grey literature, including ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global and across clinical trial registries in August 2021. Hand searching of references will be performed on the reference lists of all included studies. Two volunteers pursuing postgraduate-level studies will independently search and screen potential studies for eligibility. Finally, all references considered by hand searching will be reviewed by two researchers. The methodological quality of the research will be assessed by adopting the quality assessment used by a previous study. The assessment consists of four primary categories: descriptive validity, internal validity, external validity and statistical conclusion validity. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical approval is required for this study. Results will be disseminated through conferences and publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The autonomic nervous system plays a vital role in the modulation of many vital bodily functions, one of which is sleep and wakefulness. Many studies have investigated the link between autonomic dysfunction and sleep cycles; however, few studies have investigated the links between short-term sleep health, as determined by the Pittsburgh Quality of Sleep Index (PSQI), such as subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medication, and daytime dysfunction, and autonomic functioning in healthy individuals. AIM In this cross-sectional study, the aim was to investigate the links between short-term sleep quality and duration, and heart rate variability in 60 healthy individuals, in order to provide useful information about the effects of stress and sleep on heart rate variability (HRV) indices, which in turn could be integrated into biological models for wearable devices. METHODS Sleep parameters were collected from participants on commencement of the study, and HRV was derived using an electrocardiogram (ECG) during a resting and stress task (Trier Stress Test). RESULT Low-frequency to high-frequency (LF:HF) ratio was significantly higher during the stress task than during the baseline resting phase, and very-low-frequency and high-frequency HRV were inversely related to impaired sleep during stress tasks. CONCLUSION Given the ubiquitous nature of wearable technologies for monitoring health states, in particular HRV, it is important to consider the impacts of sleep states when using these technologies to interpret data. Very-low-frequency HRV during the stress task was found to be inversely related to three negative sleep indices: sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, and global sleep score.

Abstract
Simple Summary The use of haematological and blood biochemistry parameters has proven to be effective and repeatable ways to monitor fish health. Testing these parameters is becoming more common in aquaculture studies. Further, it is widely accepted that fish with better health status are more likely to grow faster as less energy should be consumed for non-growth purposes. Here, a new formula (Blood Performance) is introduced, which contains five common haematological and blood biochemistry parameters: red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit, and total protein. The idea behind this formula is that any single component of this formula cannot be reliable enough as a biomarker of fish health and growth. However, interestingly, Blood Performance can be much more reliable and accurate for monitoring fish health and growth. Abstract Monitoring fish health in a repeatable and accurate manner can contribute to the profitability and sustainability of aquaculture. Haematological and blood biochemistry parameters have been powerful tools and becoming increasingly common in aquaculture studies. Fish growth is closely related to its health status. A fish with a higher growth rate is more likely to be a healthy one. Any change in the physiological status of the fish, from pollution to nutritional stress, can cause changes in the blood parameters. Various aquaculture studies have measured the following components: red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit, and total protein. However, because these parameters do not always follow the same trend across experimental fish, it is difficult to draw a firm conclusion about which parameter should be considered. Therefore, Blood Performance (BP) as a new formula is introduced, which is a more reliable indicator. This formula is simple and sums up the natural logarithm of the five above-mentioned parameters. More than 90 published peer-reviewed articles that measured these five parameters in the last six years confirmed the reliability and validity of this formula. Regardless of which supplements were added to the diets, the fish with a higher growth rate had higher BP as well. In addition, in 44 studies out of 53 articles, there was a significant positive correlation between specific growth rate and BP. Under different stressful situations, from pollution to thermal stress, the fish under stress had a lower BP than the control. Fish meal and fish oil replacement studies were further evidence for this formula and showed that adding excessive alternative proteins decreased growth along with BP. In conclusion, BP can be a reliable indicator of fish health and growth when it is compared between groups in the same experiment or farm. Although there was a positive correlation between specific growth rate and BP, comparing BP between experiments is not recommended. Standardising the haematological assays can improve the reliability and accuracy of BP across experiments.

Abstract
Drug-resistant parasites threaten livestock production. Breeding more resistant hosts could be a sustainable control strategy. Environmental variation linked to animal management practices or to parasite species turnover across farms may however alter the expression of genetic potential. We created sheep lines with high or low resistance to Haemonchus contortus and achieved significant divergence on both phenotypic and genetic scales. We exposed both lines to chronic stress or to the infection by another parasite Trichostrongylus colubriformis, to test for genotype-by-environment and genotype-by-parasite species interactions respectively. Between-line divergence remained significant following chronic stress exposure although between-family variation was found. Significant genotype-by-parasite interaction was found although H. contortus-resistant lambs remained more resistant against T. colubriformis. Growth curves were not altered by the selection process although resistant lambs were lighter after the second round of divergence, before any infection took place. Breeding for resistance is a sustainable strategy but allowance needs to be made for environmental perturbations and worm species.

Abstract
Abstract. Translational science involves the fruitful interplay between basic research paradigms and related fields of application. One promising candidate for such synergy is the relationship between social and clinical psychology. Although the relation is principally bi-directional, such that either discipline can take the role of the basic and the applied science, we take the perspective of transfer from basic social and cognitive social psychology to applications in the clinical realm. Starting from a historical sketch of some of the earliest topics in the interface of both disciplines, we first come to conclude that truly integrative co-theorizing is conspicuously missing. Then, however, we recognize the strong potential for productive collaboration at the pragmatic level of an adaptive research toolbox containing approved methods and compact theoretical tools that carry over between disciplines. We outline the notion of a generic, provisional toolbox as distinguished from a fixed repertoire of established standard procedures. We provide examples of two subsets of tools, methods and logical principles required proper diagnostic reasoning, and theoretically founded influence tools that can enrich the repertoire of therapeutic interventions. Rather than propagating a normatively prescriptive toolbox, we interpret translational science as a pluralistic endeavor, such that different clinicians complete their personalized toolboxes in manifold ways.

Abstract
Over the last century, wild tiger (Panthera tigris) numbers have declined from over 100 000 individuals to fewer than 4 000, with animals now confined to less than 5% of their historic range due to habitat loss, persecution, inadequate management, and poaching. In contrast, 15 000-20 000 tigers are estimated to be housed in captivity, experiencing conditions vastly different than their wild counterparts. A total of 280 tigers are currently held at 44 different facilities within South Africa, including zoos, semi-captive 're-wilded' populations, and pets; these animals provide a unique opportunity to measure the impact of extrinsic factors, found in exotic habitats, on the adrenocortical activity of tigers. By monitoring and comparing stress-related faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) concentrations of tigers housed at different locations, and free ranging tigers in natural tiger reserves, this project aimed to get a better understanding of the impact of extrinsic factors on adrenocortical function as a measure of stress. The results of this study showed no significant difference in fGCM concentrations between captive, re-wilded, and free-ranging tigers with the exception of one site. Furthermore, factors such as sex and season were not significant drivers of fGCM concentrations. One study group had elevated fGCM concentrations, showing population variation in the stress response. This indicates that populations are able to cope with exotic environments, however, as population-specific differences in the stress response exist, we suggest management protocols be created for each population. This study offered the unique opportunity to see how well tigers are faring outside of their native range and if having re-wilded tigers in exotic locations is a potential welfare-acceptable management option for tiger conservation globally.

Abstract
CONTEXT Socio-demographic and environmental factors attribute to stress for auto-rickshaw driver leading to compromise of driver and passenger safety. AIMS This study assesses the prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with stress and identifies the stressors and coping mechanisms in auto-rickshaw drivers. SETTINGS AND DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 140 randomly selected auto-rickshaw drivers in Bengaluru city, India. METHODS AND MATERIAL Data was collected at a place and time convenient to the study participants using semi-structured pre-tested tool. Stress was assessed using Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Data was entered and analyzed using Epi Info™ software. Two sample t/ANOVA tests were used to compare the difference in means and standard deviations (SD) between the sub-groups. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Mean age of the auto-rickshaw drivers was 32.8 ± 8.3 years, majority belonged to the 25-30 years age-group. About 55.7%, 40.7% and 28.7% were consuming tobacco products, alcohol and some both, respectively. While the prevalence of self-reported stress was 76.4% (n = 107), 78.6% (n = 110) had stress based on Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) assessment. Mean PSS for participants self-reporting stress was 20.51 ± 5.25 as against 12.36 ± 4.98 who did not (P < 0.001). The mean PSS was 17.55 ± 4.13, 20.65 ± 5.23 and 23 ± 5.12 among those who self-reported having mild-, moderate- and severe-degree stress, respectively (P < 0.001). There was no significant association of any socio-demographic factors with the PSS score. Financial problems (n = 51; 47.7%) was the leading stressor, followed by road traffic (n = 49; 45.8%). Conclusions: Appropriate strategies are needed to address the high level of stress among auto-rickshaw drivers.

Abstract
The secretion of prolactin and growth hormone in response to exercise and emotional
stresses was investigated in Thoroughbreds. Two experiments were performed: one with
loading of only exercise stress and one with simultaneous loading of exercise and
emotional stresses. Exercise stress was loaded in 4 steps using a treadmill for horses:
pre-exercise period (5 min), walking period (6.5 min), galloping period (3 min), and
cooling down period (10 min). Emotional stress was loaded by showing a loud video of an
audience at a racetrack during the walking period. The results clearly demonstrated that
exercise stress rapidly increased the secretion of prolactin and growth hormone and that
secretion of them persisted for a specific period after the exercise. In addition,
emotional stress promoted prolactin secretion.

Abstract
Simple Summary Overtraining occurs when an imbalance between training stress and recovery exists, and it is prevalent in athletes, soldiers, physical education, and health education undergraduates as well as a number of female and male adolescents. Despite a broad body of evidence concerning physiological and psychological correlates of this syndrome, the pathomechanisms of overtraining are still poorly understood. This illustrates the need to establish animal models of this disorder. This article outlines and discusses physiological and psychological effects of the current established overtraining model, based on an eight-week exhaustive treadmill exercise that reveals the involvement of imbalanced energy expenditure, exacerbated inflammatory response, increased intestinal permeability, and anxiety status in the development and onset of overtraining. This study highlights the maladaptation of overtraining and provides an animal model to determine the effectiveness of possible strategies, including nutrition and monitoring, for treatment and prevention of overtraining syndromes in future studies. Abstract Overtraining in athletes usually causes profound and lasting deleterious effects on the maintenance of health and exercise capacity. Here, we established an overtraining animal model to investigate the physiological modulation for future strategic applications in vivo. We subjected C57BL/6 mice to exhaustive treadmill exercises daily for 8 weeks (the exhaustive exercise group). Next, the physiological and psychological outcomes were compared with the regular exercise and sedentary groups. Outcome measures included growth, glucose tolerance, exercise metabolism profiles, cytokine levels, intestinal tight junction gene expression, and psychological behavioral changes. Our results revealed that overtraining negatively affected the physiological and psychological changes in the current model. The exhaustive exercise group exhibited significantly lower endurance performance and imbalanced energy expenditure, causing a decrease in body fat mass and slowing down the growth curve. In addition, the inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β) and immune cells (neutrophils and monocytes) were significantly elevated after successive exhaustive exercise interventions. Furthermore, overtraining-induced stress resulted in increased anxiety status and decreased food intake. Our findings reinforce the idea that an imbalance between exercise and recovery can impair health and performance maintenance after overtraining. This study highlights the maladaptation of overtraining and provides an animal model to determine the effectiveness of possible strategies, including nutrition and monitoring, for treatment and prevention of overtraining syndromes in future studies.

Abstract
Few studies evaluated coping strategies in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) in relation to annualized relapse rate (ARR) and lesion load (LL). Overall, results might have been influenced by the inclusion of depressed patients. To investigate the coping strategies and their association to disease activity, we studied relapsing-remitting pwMS accurately selected to avoid the confounding effect of depression. Sixty-seven relapsing-remitting pwMS and 67 healthy subjects (HS) underwent to Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (I-COPE) and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situation (CISS) and Beck Depression Inventory-II. Cognitive performances, ARR, physical disability and magnetic resonance imaging T2-LL were assessed for correlation with coping and depression scores. pwMS showed lower scores than HSs on social support and turning to religion subscales of I-COPE and on emotion dimension of CISS. In pwMS, higher ARR was related to higher positive attitude and lower score on the turning to religion subscale of I-COPE. The present study revealed a less employment of emotion-based coping strategies in pwMS. A scarce use of faith for support and a frequent adoption of a positive attitude were associated with an increase of MS activity in terms of ARR.

Abstract
Existing theories suggest that moderate arousal improves selective attention, as would be expected in the context of competitive sports or sensation-seeking activities. Here we investigated how riding a motorcycle, an attention-demanding physical activity, affects sensory processing. To do so, we implemented the passive auditory oddball paradigm and measured the EEG response of participants as they rode a motorcycle, drove a car, and sat at rest. Specifically, we measured the N1 and mismatch negativity to auditory tones, as well as alpha power during periods of no tones. We investigated whether riding and driving modulated non-CNS metrics including heart rate and concentrations of the hormones epinephrine, cortisol, DHEA-S, and testosterone. While participants were riding, we found a decrease in N1 amplitude, increase in mismatch negativity, and decrease in relative alpha power, together suggesting enhancement of sensory processing and visual attention. Riding increased epinephrine levels, increased heart rate, and decreased the ratio of cortisol to DHEA-S. Together, these results suggest that riding increases focus, heightens the brain's passive monitoring of changes in the sensory environment, and alters HPA axis response. More generally, our findings suggest that selective attention and sensory monitoring seem to be separable neural processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular exercise activities affect blood cells. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the seasonal evaluation of some hematological and biochemical parameters of the Olympic Greco-Roman wrestlers. METHODS A total of three measurements were performed on wrestlers: immediately before the training period, three months and six months after the training session. Hematological and biochemical parameters were analyzed by taking sufficient blood samples from the athletes before and after exercise. RESULTS The total leukocyte, lymphocyte, and neutrophil values were found to be significantly higher (p< 0.05) in all three measures (beginning, 3rd and 6th months) in comparison with the values before exercise. When biochemical analyses were examined, blood glucose levels were significantly decreased after exercise in all three measures compared to before exercise. Post-exercise HDL cholesterol concentrations significantly increased (p< 0.05) while LDL cholesterol concentrations significantly decreased (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION On all three measures fatigue exercise has significantly increased the total leukocyte, lymphocyte and neutrophil values of wrestlers, while other, hematological parameters were not affected evenly. Fatigue exercise also significantly reduced blood glucose levels and LDL cholesterol concentrations, while HDL cholesterol concentrations were increased. The six-month period training did not have a significant effect on both hematologic and biochemical parameters in all three measurements.

Abstract
A lack of environmental enrichment can be severely detrimental to animal welfare. For terrestrial species, including humans, barren environments are associated with reduced cognitive function and increased stress responses and pathology. Despite a clear link between increased stress and reduced immune function, uncertainty remains on how enrichment might influence susceptibility to disease. For aquatic vertebrates, we are only now beginning to assess enrichment needs. Enrichment deprivation in fish has been linked to increased stress responses, agonistic behaviour, physiological changes and reduced survival. Limited data exist, however, on the impact of enrichment on disease resistance in fish, despite infectious diseases being a major challenge for global aquaculture. Here, using a model vertebrate host-parasite system, we investigated the impact of enrichment deprivation on susceptibility to disease, behaviour and physiology. Fish in barren tanks showed significantly higher infection burdens compared with those in enriched enclosures and they also displayed increased intraspecific aggression behaviour. Infections caused hosts to have significantly increased standard metabolic rates compared with uninfected conspecifics, but this did not differ between enriched and barren tanks. This study highlights the universal physiological cost of parasite infection and the biological cost (increased susceptibility to infection and increased aggression) of depriving captive animals of environmental enrichment.

Abstract
The immune system is crucial for normal neuronal development and function (neuroimmune system). Both immune and neuronal systems undergo significant postnatal development and are sensitive to developmental programming by environmental experiences. Negative experiences from infection to psychological stress at a range of different time points (in utero to adolescence) can permanently alter the function of the neuroimmune system: given its prominent role in normal brain development and function this dysregulation may increase vulnerability to psychiatric illness. In contrast, positive experiences such as exercise and environmental enrichment are protective and can promote resilience, even restoring the detrimental effects of negative experiences on the neuroimmune system. This suggests the neuroimmune system is a viable therapeutic target for treatment and prevention of psychiatric illnesses, especially those related to stress. In this review we will summarise the main cells, molecules and functions of the immune system in general and with specific reference to central nervous system development and function. We will then discuss the effects of negative and positive environmental experiences, especially during development, in programming the long-term functioning of the neuroimmune system. Finally, we will review the sparse but growing literature on sex differences in neuroimmune development and response to environmental experiences. Abstract
Heat stress has negative impacts on pork production, particularly in the grow-finish phase. During heat stress events, the feeding behavior of pigs is altered to reduce heat production. Several different systems have been developed to study feeding behavior. Most systems are not accurate representations of grow-finish commercial production as feed intake is monitored for only one pig at a time. The objective of this study was to utilize a feed monitoring system, representative of commercial conditions, to determine feeding behavior patterns of grow-finish pigs throughout the year and to identify changes that occurred during heat stress events. Feeder visit data were collected on barrows and gilts (n = 932) from three different sire breeds, Landrace, Yorkshire, and Duroc, between May 2014 and April 2016. Days in the study were partitioned into groups based on their maximum temperature-humidity index (THI), where a THI less than 23.33 °C was classified as "Normal", a THI between 23.33 and 26.11 °C was classified as "Alert", a THI between 26.11 and 28.88 °C was classified as "Danger", and a THI greater than 28.88 °C was classified as "Emergency". Feeding behavioral differences among breeds and sex were observed across all THI categories. Landrace-sired pigs had fewer feeder visits compared to Duroc- and Yorkshire-sired pigs. Gilts had fewer feeder visits than barrows in all THI categories. Differences in feeding behavior patterns between THI categories demonstrated that heat stress reduced the feeding duration of Landrace-sired pigs without any dramatic effects on the other pigs in the study. During elevated temperatures, all pigs tended to increase feeding events during the early (03:00-05:59) and late (18:00-20:59) periods of the day. Utilizing a feed monitoring system that is a more accurate representation of commercial conditions will lead to a greater understanding of feeding behavior among breed types and sexes during heat stress, allowing producers to enhance their ability to properly care for their pigs during both normal and heat stress events.

Abstract
Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) provides a long-term retrospective measure of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis activity, and is increasingly used to assess the life history, health and ecology of wild mammals. Given that sex, age, season and pregnancy influence HCC, and that it may indicate ongoing stress, we examined HCC in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) naturally inhabiting a hot and dry semi-desert like habitat, Caatinga, in northeastern Brazil. We trapped, measured, weighed, marked and collected shaved hair from the back of the neck of 61 wild marmosets during the wet and dry seasons. Using enzyme immunoassay, we found that HCC was higher in the dry season compared with the wet season among all age/sex classes. Females had significantly higher HCC than males, juveniles had higher HCC than adults, and reproductively active adult females and non-pregnant/non lactating adult females did not differ in HCC. There were no interaction effects of sex, age, group, or season on HCC. The magnitude of the effect of this extremely hot and dry environment (average yearly rainfall was only 271 mm) on HCC in common marmosets is difficult to ascertain as these animals are also experiencing a variety of other stressors. However, the elevated HCC seen in common marmosets during the 5–8 month dry season, suggests these primates face an extended period of heat, water and possibly nutritional stress, which appears to result in a high rate of juvenile mortality.

Abstract
Habitat loss and fragmentation drive the worldwide depletion of biodiversity. Although it is known that anthropogenic disturbances severely affect host and ecosystem integrity, effects on parasites are largely understudied. This study aims to investigate if and how habitat fragmentation affects the composition of ectoparasite communities on small mammalian hosts in two networks of dry deciduous forest fragments in northwestern Madagascar. Forest sites differing in size, proportion of edge habitat and host density were studied in the Ankarafantsika National Park and in the Mariarano region. A total of 924 individuals of two mouse lemur species, Microcebus murinus (n = 200) and Microcebus ravelobensis (n = 426), and two rodent species, endemic Eliurus myoxinus (n = 114) and introduced Rattus rattus (n = 184), were captured to assess ectoparasite infestations. Ectoparasite prevalence and ectoparasite species richness were statistically related to nine ecological variables applying generalized linear mixed models. Hosts harbored ticks (Haemaphysalis microcebi), mites (Schoutedenichia microcebi, Listrophoroides spp., Laelaptidae gen. spp.) and sucking lice (Lemurpediculus spp., Polyplax sp., Hoplopleuridae gen. sp.). Parasite prevalence differed significantly between host species for all detected parasite taxa. Proximity to the forest edge led to a significant reduction in ectoparasites. Parasite-specific edge effects were observed up to a distance of 750 m from the forest edge. The obtained results imply that habitat fragmentation impacts ectoparasite communities, in particular by negatively affecting temporary parasite species. The results are best explained by an interplay of parasite life cycles, responses to changes in abiotic factors induced by edges and host-specific responses to habitat fragmentation. The negative responses of most studied ectoparasite taxa to forest edges and habitat fragmentation demonstrate their ecological vulnerability that may eventually threaten the integrity of ecosystems and potentially impact ectoparasite biodiversity worldwide.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease presenting with an array of clinical phenotypes, often associated with pruritus. Environmental and psychological stressors can exacerbate psoriasis symptoms and provoke flares. Recent studies suggest a dysfunctional hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in some patients with psoriasis that can result in immune dysregulation. The immune system, in turn, can communicate with the nervous system to induce, maintain or aggravate psoriasis. In the skin, peripheral sensory as well as autonomic nerves control release of inflammatory mediators from dendritic cells, mast cells, T cells or keratinocytes, thereby modulating inflammatory responses and, in case of sensory nerves, pruritus. In response to the environment or stress, cytokines, chemokines, proteases, and neuropeptides fluctuate in psoriasis and influence immune responses as well as nerve activity. Furthermore, immune cells communicate with sensory nerves which control release of cytokines, such as IL-23, that are ultimately involved in psoriasis pathogenesis. Nerves also communicate with keratinocytes to induce epidermal proliferation. Notably, in contrast to recent years the debilitating problem of pruritus in psoriasis has been increasingly appreciated. Thus, investigating neuroimmune communication in psoriasis will not only expand our knowledge about the impact of sensory nerves in inflammation and pruritus and give new insights into the impact of environmental factors activating neuroimmune circuits or of stress in psoriasis, but may also lead to novel therapies. This review summarizes the relevant literature on the role of neuroimmune circuits, stress and how the central HPA axis and its peripheral equivalent in the skin, impact psoriasis.

Abstract
Severe thermal injury induces metabolic and physiological stress, prompting a disruption in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The objective of this study was to evaluate potential confounding effects of Lactated Ringer's (LR) resuscitation on adrenal damage and cortisol production following burn. Anesthetized swine were instrumented with jugular catheters and sustained 40% TBSA burns from brass probes heated to 100°C. Animals recovered to consciousness and received IV fluid resuscitation with LR at two different volumes: 15 ml/kg/d (limited volume [LV], n = 6) or 2 ml/kg/%TBSA/d (modified Brooke [MB], n = 6). Nonburned animals (Sham) were both oral and IV fluid restricted (S-FR, n = 4) to induce stress. Computed tomography (CT) angiographies were performed at baseline (BL) and 48 hours postburn, while blood and urine samples were collected at BL, 6, 24, and 48 hours postburn, with euthanasia at 48 hours for adrenal harvesting. Urinary cortisol was elevated following burn/surgery in all animals and returned back to BL in S-FR (404 ± 48 pg/mg creatinine) but not MB (1332 ± 176 pg/mg creatinine; P = .005) or LV (1223 ± 335 pg/mg creatinine; P = .07) by 48 hours. Gene expression of cleavage enzymes (3β-HSD, CYP17, CYP11, and CYP21) along the cortisol synthesis pathway showed minimal changes. Adrenal apoptosis (Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling [TUNEL] staining) was greatest in the MB group (P ≤ .01) when compared to S-FR, partly due to elevations in c-Jun N-terminal kinase. Adrenal hemorrhaging was also greatest in MB animals, with no differences in tissue volume or wet-to-dry ratio. However, tissue levels of cytokines IL-1β, IL-10, and IL-12 were greatest in LV. Burn injury elevates urinary cortisol and compromises adrenal gland integrity, which is affected by IV fluid volume.

Abstract
Mental stress is a major burden for our society. Invasive and non-invasive methods have been proposed to monitor and quantify it using various sensors on and off body. In this Letter, the authors investigated the use of the arm photoplethysmogram (PPG) to assess mental stress in laboratory conditions. Results were in correspondence with their previous in-silico study which guided the present study. Three wave shape parameters were identified for stress assessment from the PPG signal: (i) the time from dicrotic notch to end diastole; (ii) the time from pulse onset to systolic peak; and (iii) the ratio of diastolic to systolic area. The proposed in-vivo results showed that the two first parameters responded significantly to increased mental stress and to a breathing relaxation procedure, complementing heart rate, heart rate variability, and pulse transit time as indices of stress.

Abstract
The physiological effects of short-term stress responses typically lead to increased individual survival as it prepares the body for fight or flight through catabolic reactions in the body. These physiological effects trade off against growth, immunocompetence, reproduction, and even long-term survival. Chronic stress may thus reduce individual and population performance, with direct implications for the management and conservation of wildlife populations. Yet, relatively little is known about how chronic stress levels vary across wild populations and factors contributing to increased chronic stress levels. One method to measure long-term stress in mammals is to quantify slowly incorporated stress hormone (cortisol) in hair, which most likely reflect a long-term average of the stress responses. In this study, we sampled 237 harvested moose Alces alces across Sweden to determine the relative effect of landscape variables and disturbances on moose hair cortisol levels. We used linear model combinations and Akaike’s Information Criterion (corrected for small sample sizes), and included variables related to human disturbance, ungulate competition, large carnivore density, and ambient temperature to estimate the covariates that best explained the variance in stress levels in moose. The most important variables explaining the variation in hair cortisol levels in moose were the long-term average temperature sum in the area moose lived and the distance to occupied wolf territory; higher hair cortisol levels were detected where temperatures were higher and closer to occupied wolf territories, respectively.

Abstract
In this study we have monitored the stress of Iberian ibex at individual level within the course of an experimental infection with Sarcoptes scabiei mites. For this purpose we have measured faecal 11-ketoetiocholanolone (11-k) using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). We used linear mixed models to explore the effects of host sex and age, clinic (mange status) and time (number of days post-infection) on the concentration of faecal 11-k. The most parsimonious model included clinic, time and host age, which explained 76.6% of the variance of the response variable. Moreover, the concentration of faecal 11-k varied greatly between individuals. Our results evidence the stressor nature of the disease and highlight the negative effects on hosts due to cortisol release and activity.

Abstract
Containing high concentration of vanadium served by the volcanic bedrock, Jeju ground water has long been known for various implicit health benefits including immune-promotion. Exposure to stress has been reported to be associated with immunosuppression such as reducing lymphocyte population or antibody production due to stress hormones. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the effects of Jeju ground water on chronically stressed mice. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to various stressors such as restraint stress, water swimming stress, heat stress, acoustic stress, and Jeju ground water was supplied for 28 days with two different concentrations, S1 (vanadium 15-20 μg/l, pH 8.3) and S2 (vanadium 20-25 μg/l, pH 8.5). Treatment with Jeju ground water increased CD4+CD8- or CD4-CD8+ single-positive thymocytes. It also increased the proliferation of splenocytes and the populations of CD4+ T cells, CD45R/B220+ B cells, CD11b+ macrophages or Gr-1+ granulocytes in spleen. In addition, the production of IgG was increased in chronically stressed mice by treatment with Jeju ground water. These results suggest vanadium-rich Jeju ground water may be helpful in T cell development in thymus and immune cell proliferation and its function in spleen against chronic stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver injury has been recognized as a primary cause of hepatic morbidity and mortality. Euscaphis konishii Hayata, also called Euscaphis fukienensis Hsu, is usually used as a detumescent and analgesic agent to improve liver function in South China, but its mechanism of action and chemical composition are unclear. OBJECTIVE The main aim of the study was to investigate the constituent and potential hepatoprotective mechanism of the total triterpenes of E. konishii pericarp (TTEP). METHODS The constituent of TTEP was analyzed by a series of silica gel column to get single compounds and then identified by NMR and MS. In vitro assays were conducted to test the free radical scavenging activity of TTEP. The BCG/LPS-induced immunological livery injury mice model was established to clarify the hepatoprotective effect of TTEP in vivo. RESULTS 8 pentacyclic triterpene acids were separated and identified by NMR and MS. TTEP treatment (50, 100, and 200 mg/Kg) improved the immune function of the BCG/LPS-infected mice, dose-dependently alleviated the BCG/LPS-induced inflammation and oxidative stress, and ameliorated the hepatocyte apoptosis in the liver tissue. CONCLUSION The pericarp of E. konishii may be further considered as a potent natural food for liver disease treatment.

Abstract
Juvenile blunt snout bream Megalobrama amblycephala were reared under three photoperiods, 8 L: 16D, 12 L: 12D and 16 L: 8D (L: light; D: dark) for over 8 weeks. The results showed that growth performance was significantly enhanced by long photoperiod. Contrary to feed conversion ratio, final length, final weight, weight gain and feed intake increased significantly as illumination time increased from 8 h daily to 16 h daily. Low size heterogeneity and whole-body lipid content in fish exposed to long photoperiod were also observed. Both relative mRNA expression level of GH and IGF-I increased as illumination time increased from 8 h to 16 h daily. The lowest value of plasma cortisol was observed at the middle the photophase while the highest value was observed at the transition between the day and night span. Hepatic MDA content significantly increased as illumination time increased from 8 h daily to 16 h daily. The activities of hepatic catalase and glutathione peroxidase were lowest in fish exposed to 16 L: 8D photoperiod and significantly lower than that in fish exposed to 8 L: 16D. These results indicate that photoperiod manipulation may not only improve growth performance but also reduce size heterogeneity. However, prolonged photoperiod could cause chronic stress since plasma cortisol level was higher in the long photoperiod group, leading to an increasing oxidative stress.

Abstract
The main focus of this review is illness among elite athletes, how and why it occurs, and whether any measures can be taken to combat it or to prevent its onset. In particular, there is particular interest in exercise-induced immunodepression, which is a result of the immune system regarding exercise (e.g., prolonged, exhaustive exercise) as a challenge to its function. This promotes the inflammatory response. There is often a high incidence of illness in athletes after undertaking strenuous exercise, particularly among those competing in endurance events, not only mainly in terms of upper respiratory tract illness, but also involving gastrointestinal problems. It may well be that this high incidence is largely due to insufficient recovery time being allowed after, for example, a marathon, a triathlon, or other endurance events. Two examples of the incidence of upper respiratory tract illness in moderate versus endurance exercise are provided. In recent years, increasing numbers of research studies have investigated the origins, symptoms, and incidence of these bouts of illness and have attempted to alleviate the symptoms with supplements, sports foods, or immunonutrition. One aspect of the present review discusses iron deficiency, which has been primarily suggested to have an impact upon cell-mediated immunity. Immunonutrition is also discussed, as are new techniques for investigating links between metabolism and immune function.

Abstract
With the increase in the global herd, the use of metabolic modifiers has become an important area for many researchers looking for a supraphysiological diet to improve production parameters. For improving the performance of high yielding cows, the optimal balance of all nutrients including microminerals is important. Chromium (Cr) is one of the important micronutrients which plays an important role in metabolism of ruminants. Experimental studies have found that Cr could change performance, immune responses, glucose and fatty acid metabolism, and antioxidant status in dairy cows. In some studies, Cr supplementation improved dry matter intake, milk production, and milk composition of dairy cows in the early, mid, or late stage of lactation. Also, in some studies, performance of growing animal, immune response, and some blood parameters responded positively to Cr supplementation. In conclusion, the effects of Cr supplementation on performance of ruminants are inconsistent; however, its long-term effects on health, productivity, immune system, and antioxidant activity of ruminants still need to be investigated.
