Effect of process parameters over carbon-based ZIF-62 nano-rooted membrane for environmental pollutants separation

Development of blend PEG-PES/NMP-DMF mixed matrix membrane for CO2/N2 separation

The carbon dioxide (CO2) separation technology has become a focus recently, and a developed example is the membrane technology. It is an alternative form of enhanced gas separation performance above the Robeson upper bound line resulting in the idea of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). With attention given to membrane technologies, the MMMs were fabricated to have the most desirable gas separation performance. In this work, blend MMMs were synthesised by using two polymers, namely, poly(ether sulfone) (PES) and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG). These polymers were dissolved in blend N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF) solvents with the functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-F) fillers by using the mixing solution method. The embedding of the pristine MWCNTs and MWCNTs-F within the new synthesised MMM was then studied towards CO2/N2 separation. In addition, the optimisation of the loading of MWCNTs-F for blend MMM for CO2/N2 separation was also studied. The experimental results showed that the functionalised MWCNTs (MWCNTs-F) were a better choice at enhancing gas separation compared to the pristine MWCNTs (MWCNTs-P). Additionally, the effects of MWCNTs-F at loadings 0.01 to 0.05% were studied along with the polymer compositions for PES:PEG of 10:20, 20:20 and 30:10. Both these parameters of study affect the manner of gas separation performance in the blend MMMs. Overall, the best performing membrane showed a selectivity value of 1.01 + 0.05 for a blend MMM (MMM-0.03F) fabricated with 20 wt% of PES, 20 wt% of PEG and 0.03 wt% of MWCNTs-F. The MMM-0.03F was able to withstand a pressure of 2 bar, illustrating its mechanical strength and ability to be used in the post combustion carbon capture application industries where the flue gas pressure is at 1.01 bar.

Risk assessment of toxic and hazardous metals in paddy agroecosystem by biochar-for bio-membrane applications

Toxic and carcinogenic metal (loid)s, such arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd), found in contaminated paddy soils pose a serious danger to environmental sustainability. Their geochemical activities are complex, making it difficult to manage their contamination. Rice grown in Cd and As-polluted soils ends up in people's bellies, where it can cause cancer, anemia, and the deadly itai sickness. Solving this issue calls for research into eco-friendly and cost-effective remediation technology to lower rice's As and Cd levels. This research delves deeply into the origins of As and Cd in paddy soils, as well as their mobility, bioavailability, and uptake mechanisms by rice plants. It also examines the current methods and reactors used to lower As and Cd contamination in rice. Iron-modified biochar (Fe-BC) is a promising technology for reducing As and Cd toxicity in rice, improving soil health, and boosting rice's nutritional value. Biochar's physiochemical characteristics are enhanced by the addition of iron, making it a potent adsorbent for As and Cd ions. In conclusion, Fe-BC's biomembrane properties make them an attractive option for remediating As- and Cd-contaminated paddy soils. More efficient mitigation measures, including the use of biomembrane technology, can be developed when sustainable agriculture practices are combined with these technologies.

Metal-organic framework glass composites

The melting phenomenon in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been recognised as one of the fourth generation MOF paradigm behaviours. Molten MOFs have high processibility for producing mechanically robust glassy MOF macrostructures, and they also offer highly tunable interfacial characteristics when combined with other types of functional materials, such as crystalline MOFs, inorganic glass and metal halide perovskites. As a result, MOF glass composites have emerged as a family of functional materials with dynamic properties and hierarchical structural control. These nanocomposites allow for sophisticated materials science studies as well as the fabrication of next-generation separation, catalysis, optical, and biomedical devices. Here, we review the approaches for designing, fabricating, and characterising MOF glass composites. We determine the key application opportunities enabled by these composites and explore the remaining hurdles, such as improving thermal and chemical compatibility, regulating interfacial properties, and scalability.

A theoretical probe into the separation of CO2/CH4/N2 mixtures with polysulfone/polydimethylsiloxane-nano zinc oxide MMM

In the current investigation, molecular dynamics (MD) and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation as remarkable and competent approaches have been employed for understanding structural and transport properties of MMMs in the realm of gas separation. The two commonly used polymers i.e. polysulfone (Psf) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as well as zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticle (NP) were used to carefully examine the transport properties of three light gasses (CO₂, N₂ and CH₄) through simple Psf, Psf/PDMS composite loaded by different amounts of ZnO NP. Also, the fractional free volume (FFV), X-ray diffraction (XRD), glass transition temperature (T_g), and Equilibrium density were calculated to scrutinize the structural characterizations of the membranes. Moreover, the effect of feed pressure (4-16 bar) on gas separation performance of simulated MMMs was investigated. Results obtained in different experiments showed a clear improvement in the performance of simulated membranes by adding PDMS to PSf matrix. The selectivity of studied MMMs was in the range from 50.91 to 63.05 at pressures varying from 4 to 16 bar for the CO₂/N₂ gas pair, whereas the corresponding value for CO₂/CH₄ system was found to be in the range 27.27-46.24. For 6 wt% ZnO in 80%PSf + 20%PDMS membrane, high permeabilities of 78.02, 2.86 and 1.33 barrers were observed for CO₂, CH₄ and N₂ gases, respectively. The 90%PSf + 10%PDMS membrane with 2% ZnO had a highest CO₂/N₂ selectivity value of 63.05 and its CO₂ permeability at 8 bar was 57 barrer.

Methanol production and purification via membrane-based technology: Recent advancements, challenges, and the way forward

Industrail revolution on the back of fossil fuels has costed humanity higher temperatures on the planet due to ever-growing concentration of CO₂ emissions in Earth's atmosphere. To tackle global warming demand for renewable energy sources continues to increase. Along renewables, there has been a growing interest in converting carbon dioxide to methanol, which can be used as a fuel or a feedstock for producing chemicals. The current review study provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements, challenges, and future prospects of methanol production and purification via membrane-based technology. Traditional downstream processes for methanol production, such as distillation and absorption, have several drawbacks, including high energy consumption and environmental concerns. In comparison to conventional technologies, membrane-based separation techniques have emerged as a promising alternative for producing and purifying methanol. The review highlights recent developments in membrane-based methanol production and purification technology, including using novel membrane materials such as ceramic, polymeric, and mixed matrix membranes. Additionally, integrating photocatalytic processes with membrane separation has been investigated to improve the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol. Despite the potential benefits of membrane-based systems, several challenges need to be addressed. Membrane fouling and scaling are significant issues that can reduce the efficiency and lifespan of the membranes. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of membrane-based systems compared to traditional methods is a critical consideration that must be evaluated. In conclusion, the review provides insights into the current state of membrane-based technology for methanol production and purification and identifies areas for future research. The development of high-performance membranes and the optimization of membrane-based processes are crucial for improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of this technology and for advancing the goal of sustainable energy production.

Glutathione treatment suppresses the adverse effects of microplastics in rice

Oryza sativa is grown worldwide and exhibit sensitivity to different stresses. Exponential increase in microplastics in agroecosystems is damaging and demand pragmatic strategies to protect growth and yield losses. We evaluated exogenous application of different doses of glutathione (GSH) for mediation of physiological traits of rice plants experiencing two different MPs i.e. PET and HDPE in root zone. All the rice seedlings exhibited MP-induced significant (P ≤ 0.001) growth inhibition compared to the control plants. GSH application (T₃) significantly increased the shoot fresh weight (8.80%), root fresh weight (19.22%), shoot dry weight (13.705%), root dry weight (25.52%), plant height (5.75%) and 100-grain weight (9.36%), compared to control plants. GSH treated plants (T₄) showed a recovery mechanism by managing the marginal rate of reduction of all photosynthetic and gas exchange attributes by showing 34.44, 20.98, 34.83, 42.16, 39.70, and 51.38% reduction for Chl-a, Chl-b, total cholophyll, photosynthetic rate (A), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (Gs), respectively, compared to control plants. Under 5 mg L^-1 HDPE and PET, rice seedlings without GSH treatment responded in terms of increase in total soluble sugar, total free amino acid, glutathione, glutathione disulfide contents, while total soluble protein and ascorbic acid contents decreased significantly, compared with control plants. Corrleation matrix revealed positive relationship between GSH and improvement in studied attributes. Moreover, exogenous GSH improved rice growth and productivity to counter the negative role of MPs. This unique study examined the effects of GSH on rice plants growing in MP-contaminated media and revealed how exogenous GSH helps plants survive MP-stress.

Reinforcement of single-walled carbon nanotubes on polydimethylsiloxane membranes for CO2, O2, and N2 permeability/selectivity

In this study, PDMS incorporated with SWCNTs have been fabricated via solution casting method for industrial applications and characterized by the analyses of SEM, FTIR, TGA, AFM, and MST. The modified membranes were further analyzed for CO₂, O₂, and N₂ gas permeability. The strategic membranes have five different weight ratios (0.013, 0.025, 0.038, 0.050, 0.063) compared to neat PDMS membranes. The even distribution of SWCNTs in PDMS provided results that showed improvement in thermal stability. However, mechanical strength has been weakened with increased concentration of nanofiller because of the increase in the number of SWCNTs by increases that imperfections become more severe. The designed polymeric membranes with good thermal stability and adequate mechanical strength can be used for the selectivity and permeability of CO₂, O₂, and N₂ gases. The effect of the PDMS-SWCNTs on gas permeability has been studied. 0.063 wt.% SWCNTs presented the maximum permeability of CO₂ gas while maximum O₂ and N₂ gas permeability have been obtained by 0.013 wt.% SWCNTs. The ideal selectivity of mixed (50:50) gas conditions has been tested. The maximum CO₂/N₂ ideal selectivity was obtained by 0.050 and 0.063 wt.% SWCNTs while maximum O₂/N₂ ideal selectivity obtained by 0.050 wt.% SWCNTs. Therefore, the fabrication of this novel SWCNTs-PDMS membrane may lead to separating the industrial exhaust and be used as a potential membrane for environmental remediation in the future.

A carbon based-screen-printed electrode amplified with two-dimensional reduced graphene/Fe3O4 nanocomposite as electroanalytical sensor for monitoring 4-aminophenol in environmental fluids

The analysis water pollutants are so important strategy for investigation of water quality. On the other hand, 4-aminophenol is known as a hazardous and high-risk compound for humans, and its detection and measurement is very important for investigating the quality of surface and groundwater. In this study, graphene/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite was synthesized by a simple chemical method and characterized by EDS and TEM methods and results showed Nano spherical shape of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle with diameter about 20 nM decorated at surface of 2D reduce graphene nanosheet (2D-rG-Fe₃O₄). The 2D-rG-Fe₃O₄ was used as excellent catalyst at surface of carbon-based screen-printed electrode (CSPE) and used as electroanalytical sensor in monitoring and determination of 4-aminophenol in waste water sample. The results confirmed improving ∼4.0 times in oxidation signal and reducing 120 mV in oxidation potential of 4-aminophenol at surface of 2D-rG-Fe₃O₄/CSPE compare to CSPE, respectively. The electrochemical investigation showed pH dependence behavior with equal value of electron and proton for -aminophenol at surface of 2D-rG-Fe₃O₄/CSPE. Using square wave voltammetry method (SWV), the 2D-rG-Fe₃O₄/CSPE successfully monitored 4-aminophenol in the concentration range 1.0 nM-200 μM. Finally, 2D-rG-Fe₃O₄/CSPE monitored 4-aminophenol in the different environmental fluids such as urban waste water, industrial waste water and river samples with recovery range 97.2%-104.3% that confirm powerful ability of 2D-rG-Fe₃O₄/CSPE as analytical tool.

Phytotoxic responses of wheat to an imidazolium based ionic liquid in absence and presence of biochar

Research on ionic liquids (ILs) and biochars (BCs) is a novel site of scientific interest. An experiment was designed to assess the effect of 1-propanenitrile imidazolium trifluoro methane sulfonate ([C₂NIM][CF₃SO₃]) ionic liquid (IL) and IL-BC combination on the wheat plant. Three working standards of the IL; 50, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L, prepared in deionized water, were tested in the absence and presence of BC on wheat seedling. Results indicated significant decrease ‏in seed germination (%), length, fresh weight, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid contents of wheat ‏seedlings at 250, 500 and ‏1000 mg/L of the ‏IL. An admirable increase in phenolic and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) contents of wheat seedlings was noted at 250, 500 and ‏1000 mg/L of the IL. The application of BC significantly ‏ameliorated the negative effects of IL on the selected parameters of ‏wheat. It is inferred that the undesirable effects of the IL on wheat growth can be positively restored by addition of BC.

Synthesis, characterization and adsorption behavior of modified cellulose nanocrystals towards different cationic dyes

Green and efficient removal of polluted materials are essential for the sustainability of a clean and green environment. Nanomaterials, particularly cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), are abundant in nature and can be extracted from various sources, including cotton, rice, wheat, and plants. CNCs are renewable biomass materials with a high concentration of polar functional groups. This study used succinic anhydride to modify the surface of native cellulose nanocrystals (NCNCs). Succinic anhydride has been frequently used in adhesives and sealant chemicals for a long time, and here, it is evaluated for dye removal performance. The morphology and modification of CNCs studied using FTIR, TGA & DTG, XRD, SEM, AFM, and TEM. The ability of modified cellulose nanocrystals (MCNCs) to adsorb cationic golden yellow dye and methylene blue dye was investigated. The MCNCs exhibited high adsorption affinity for the two different cationic dyes. The maximum adsorption efficiency of NCNCs and MCNCs towards the cationic dye was 0.009 and 0.156 wt%. The investigation for adhesive properties is based on the strength and toughness of MCNCs. MCNCs demonstrated improved tensile strength (2350 MPa) and modulus (13.9 MPa) using E-51 epoxy system and a curing agent compared to 3 wt% composites. This research lays the groundwork for environmentally friendly fabrication and consumption in the industrial sector.

Synthesis of bioinspired sorbent and their exploitation for methylene blue remediation

In this research article, novel starch phosphate grafted polyvinyl imidazole (StP-g-PIMDZs) was synthesized. Firstly, a phosphate group was attached to starch polymer via a phosphorylation reaction. Next, 1-vinyl imidazole (VIMDZ) was grafted on the backbone of starch phosphate (StP) through a free radical polymerization reaction. The synthesis of these modified starches was confirmed by 1H NMR, 31P NMR and FT-IR techniques. The grafting of vinyl imidazole onto StP diminished the crystallinity. Due to the insertion of the aromatic imidazole ring, the StP-g-PIMDZs demonstrated greater thermal stability. The StP and StP-g-PIMDZs were used as sorbents for the adsorption of methylene blue dye (MBD) from the model solution. The maximum removal percentage for starch, StP, StP-g-PIMDZ 1, StP-g-PIMDZ 2 and StP-g-PIMDZ 3 was found to be 60.6%, 66.7%, 74.2%, 85.3 and 95.4%, respectively. The Pseudo second order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm were best suited to the experimental data with R2 = 0.999 and 0.99, respectively. Additionally, the thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, endothermic and favored chemi-sorption mechanism.

Membrane-processed honey samples for pollen characterization with health benefits

Better processing techniques must be utilized widely due to the rising demand for honey. The most common honey processing techniques are applied to melissopalynomorphs to check the quality and quantity of valuable honey using microporous ultrafiltration membranes. It is essential to have the ability to selectively filter out sugars from honey using ultrafiltration. This study authenticated 24 honey samples using membrane reactors ultrafiltration protocol to describe the pollen spectrum of dominant vegetation. The purpose of this study was also to explore nutritional benefits as well as the active phytochemical constituents of honey samples. Honey samples were collected and labeled Acacia, Eucalyptus, and Ziziphus species based on plant resources provided by local beekeepers. A variety of honeybee flora was collected around the apiaries between 2020 and 2021. Honey analysis revealed that the pollen extraction of 24 bee foraging species belonging to 14 families. The honey membrane technology verified the identities of honey and nectar sources. Also, pollen identified using honey ultrafiltration membranes revealed dominant resources: Acacia spp. (69%), Eucalyptus spp. (52%) and Ziziphus spp. Honey filtration using a membrane technology classified 14 samples as unifloral, represented by six dominant pollen types. The absolute pollen count in the honey sample revealed that 58.33% (n = 14) belong to Maurizio's class I. Scanning ultrasculpturing showed diverse exine patterns: reticulate, psilate, scabrate-verrucate, scabrate-gemmate, granulate, perforate, microechinate, microreticulate, and regulate to fossulate for correct identification of honey pollen types. Honey ultrafiltration should be utilized to validate the botanical sources of honey and trace their biogeographic authenticity. Thus, it is imperative to look at the alternative useful method to identify the botanical origin of filtered honey. It is critical to separate honey from adulteration by a standardized protocol. Membrane technology has yielded significant outcomes in the purification of honey.

Blend membranes comprising polyetherimide and polyvinyl acetate with improved methane enrichment performance

A clean and sustainable energy source, biogas is widely accessible worldwide. The caloric value of biogas is related to its methane content, and therefore removal of other gases is essential for reaping the benefits of this cleaner resource. In contrast to other classical techniques, membrane technology is relatively new yet extremely promising for methane enrichment. The methane enrichment performance of polymeric membranes is constrained, hence newer material combinations have been investigated to enhance membrane performance. In this study, blend membranes comprised of polyetherimide (PEI) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) in varying proportions were prepared by adopting the wet-phase inversion technique. The generated pure, and blend membranes were characterized for the morphological, thermal, and structural study. The interactions of PEI and PVAc in blend samples were verified by FTIR analysis. On the other hand, SEM investigation indicated that the membranes have an anisotropic porous structure with a dense skin layer at the top. Subsequently, a single glass transition temperature (T_g), as validated by DSC analysis, indicates that the blended polymers are miscible. Furthermore, membranes' performance for gas separation was assessed regarding selectivity and permeance at feed pressures ranging from 2 to 6 bar. The permeation results showed that the CO₂ permeance has increased by 40.47% with the addition of 4 wt % PVAc at 2 bar pressure. Furthermore, ideal selectivity improves as the blend ratio increases; nonetheless, the highest value for CO₂/CH₄ ideal selectivity was attained with a 2 wt % PVAc addition and at 2 bar pressure, which is approximately 26% greater than the pure PEI membrane. At 4 bar pressure, optimum CO₂/N₂ selectivity value of 22.50 was achieved. The findings indicate that PVAc is an excellent option for expanding the separation performance of blended polymeric membranes for biogas enrichment.

Graphene loaded TiO2 submicron spheres scattering layer for efficient dye-sensitized solar cell

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) have attracted great attention due to environmentally friendly low-cost processing, excellent working ability in diffuse light, and potential to meet the power demands of future buildings due the true class of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Nevertheless, DSSCs have relatively low photoconversion efficiency (PCE) due to multiple issues. Several strategies have been employed to enhance its PCE. For instance, bi-layered structure of photoelectrode i.e., mesoporous TiO₂ transparent layer with top scattering layer was introduced which scatter light inside on large angles improves the harvesting ability of photoelectrode thus enhanced PCE. However, scattering layer is composed of aggregated small particles which offer sluggish electron transport due to multiple grain boundaries, consequently, unwanted recombination reaction which leads to poor PCE. This issue has been addressed for transparent layer immensely but ignored for scattering layer. Mostly for scattering layer in previous studies novel structures have been proposed to enhance scattering properties and dye adsorption only. Therefore, in this study for the first time presenting dual functional graphene/TiO₂ scattering layer in which solvent exfoliated graphene is incorporated in TiO₂ submicron spheres which enhanced electron transport properties, while submicron spheres scatter light effectively. Scattering and electron transport characteristics of DSSCs are thoroughly investigated with the function of graphene loading. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has revealed that diffusion coefficient length and coefficient and conductivity attained maximum value at 0.01 wt%. while other important parameters such as electron lifetime and electron density in conduction band have been improved till 0.020 wt% graphene loading. However, results indicated that with 0.01 w% graphene 33% higher PCE was achieved than without scattering layer and 13% higher than scattering layer without graphene. The depraving in PCE at >0.01 wt% graphene despite of excellent electron transport improvement is attributed to the loss of diffuse reflectance and higher optical absorption by graphene.

Hydrophobic ammonium based ionic liquids for efficient extraction of textile dyes from aqueous media: Extraction study and antibacterial evaluation

Alizarin red S (ARS) extraction from aqueous medium was carried out using hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) containing trioctylammonium cation paired with 4-tert-butylbenzoate ([TOA][Butbenz] (IL1), 4-phenylbutanoate ([TOA][PheBut] (IL2), 3-4-dimethylbenzoate ([TOA][DMbenz] (IL3), naphthoate, ([TOA][Naph]) (IL4), salicylate ([TOA][Sali]) (IL5) and nonanedioate ([TOA]2[Nona]) (IL6). The findings demonstrated that all of the tested ILs were efficient for extracting ARS, however, [TOA]2[Nona] was more effective than others. For the extraction of ARS from the aqueous phase, the effects of various parameters including the initial pH of the dye solution, contact time, ILs to dye volume ratio (VIL:VW), dye concentration, temperature, and salt effect were investigated. The spontaneity of the liquid-liquid extraction of ARS from the aqueous phase to the IL phase was confirmed by thermodynamic parameters. More than 90% of the ARS was extracted from the aqueous phase to the IL phase throughout all experiments. Interaction of selected IL with dyes were confirmed using FTIR analysis. The standard bacterial strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) ATCC BAA-2471 (gram negative) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA) ATCC 43300 (gram positive) were used for evaluating antibacterial activity. The lower dose (250 ppm), the ILs1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 inhibited 0.40, 1.50, 6.50, 1.50, 2.50, and 0.50 mm growth of E. coli, and 4.0, 2.0, 16.50, 0.40, 5.0, and 3.50 mm growth of MRSA, respectively. The experimental findings confirmed that the present ILs can be utilized as an effective solvent for ARS and other dyes extraction from aqueous media.

Comparative study of ZIF-8-materials for removal of hazardous compounds using physio-chemical remediation techniques

The inherent toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of dyes that are discharged into aquatic ecosystems, harming the health of humans and animals. ZIF-8 based composites are regarded as good adsorbents for the breakdown of dyes in order to remove or degrade them. In the course of this research, metal-organic framework materials known as ZIF-8 and its two stable composites, ZIF-8/BiCoO₃ (MZBC) and ZIF-8/BiYO₃ (MZBY), were produced via a hydrothermal process and solvothermal process, respectively, for the dangerous Congo red (CR) dye removal from the solution in water using adsorption method. According to the findings, the most significant amount of CR dye that could be adsorbed is onto MZBC, followed by MZBY and ZIF-8. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used effectively to match the data for adsorption behavior and was confirmed using the Langmuir isotherm equation. There is a possibility that the pH and amount of adsorbent might influence the adsorption behavior of the adsorbents. According to the experiment results, the technique featured an endothermic adsorption reaction that spontaneously occurred. The higher adsorption capability of MZBC is because of the large surface area. This results in strong interactions between the functional groups on the surface of MZBC and CR dye molecules. In addition to the electrostatic connection between functional group Zn-O-H on the surface of ZIF-8 in MZBC and the -NH₂ or SO₃ functional group areas in CR molecules, it also includes the strong π-π interaction of biphenyl rings.

The potential of microalgae Dunaliella salina to treat shrimp pond wastewater in a PAN/GO membrane bioreactor

Graphene has attracted a significant amount of attention because to its excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical characteristics. In this work, a membrane bioreactor with hollow fibre PAN/GO nanocomposite was studied for the treatment of Persian Gulf shrimp pond wastewater. Dunaliella salina microalgae have been used for better treatment and the formation of sludge mass in a shorter period of treatment in the MBR system. Additionally, GO nanoparticles were used in order to improve the hydrophilicity of the membranes. Various tests, such as Pure water permeate (PWP), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), Contact angle (CA), Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared substances (FTIR) were used to characterize the synthesized membranes. To evaluate the treated wastewater, several factors were evaluated, including: TP, TN, TSS, NTU, BOD, COD, EC. The contact angle was reduced by the inclusion of GO nanoparticles from 53.8° for PAN-0 to 45.4° for PAN-3. The results of FTIR analysis confirmed the synthesis of GO and showed the formation of different deposits as fouling on the surface of the prepared membranes after MBR process. Also, the removal percentage of COD and BOD₅ was over 90% for membranes with graphene oxide nanoparticles. The turbidity for all fabricated membranes were removed ∼98%. Also, very little fouling occurred in the membranes constructed with GO membranes and the maximum concentration of GO let to maximum performance regarding to the high potential of fouling control. In addition, the growth of Microalgae Dunaliella salina with shrimp wastewater was observed successfully. In conclusion, the finding of this work not only proposed a promising solution for controlling fouling in an MBR but also resulted in a benefit product, i.e. microalgae Dunaliella salina.

Plant-soil-microbe interactions in maintaining ecosystem stability and coordinated turnover under changing environmental conditions

Ecosystem functions directly depend upon biophysical as well as biogeochemical reactions occurring at the soil-microbe-plant interface. Environment is considered as a major driver of any ecosystem and for the distributions of living organisms. Any changes in climate may potentially alter the composition of communities i.e., plants, soil microbes and the interactions between them. Since the impacts of global climate change are not short-term, it is indispensable to appraise its effects on different life forms including soil-microbe-plant interactions. This article highlights the crucial role that microbial communities play in interacting with plants under environmental disturbances, especially thermal and water stress. We reviewed that in response to the environmental changes, actions and reactions of plants and microbes vary markedly within an ecosystem. Changes in environment and climate like warming, CO₂ elevation, and moisture deficiency impact plant and microbial performance, their diversity and ultimately community structure. Plant and soil feedbacks also affect interacting species and modify community composition. The interactive relationship between plants and soil microbes is critically important for structuring terrestrial ecosystems. The anticipated climate change is aggravating the living conditions for soil microbes and plants. The environmental insecurity and complications are not short-term and limited to any particular type of organism. We have appraised effects of climate change on the soil inhabiting microbes and plants in a broader prospect. This article highlights the unique qualities of tripartite interaction between plant-soil-microbe under climate change.

The use of inorganic ferrous-ferric oxide nanoparticles to improve fresh and durability properties of foamed concrete

Efforts to modify cement-based mixtures have continuously engrossed the interest of academics. Favourable impacts of nanoparticles, for instance, fine particle size and great reactivity, have made them be utilized in concrete. Foamed concrete (FC) is immensely porous, and its properties diminish with an increase in the number of pores. To enhance its properties, the FC matrix could be attuned by integrating numerous nanoparticles. The influence of ferrous-ferric oxide nanoparticles (FFO-NP) in FC was not discovered previously in the present body of knowledge. Thus, there is some uncertainty contemplating the mechanism to which extent the FFO-NP can affect the durability properties of FC. Hence, this study focuses on utilizing FFO-NP in the FC matrix. FC specimens with a density of 1000 kg/m³ were cast and tested. The objective was to assess the influence of different FFO-NP weight fractions (0.10%, 0.15%, 0.20%, 0.25%, 0.30%, and 0.35%) on durability properties such as drying shrinkage, porosity, water absorption and ultrasonic wave propagation velocity of FC. The results implied that the presence of a 0.25% weight fraction of FFO-NP in FC facilitates optimal water absorption, porosity, ultrasonic pulse velocity and drying shrinkage of FC. The presence of FFO-NP alters the microstructural of FC from loose needle-like into a dense cohesive microstructure of the cementitious composite. Besides, FFO-NP augments the FC matrix by filling the voids, microcracks, and spaces within the structure. Further than the ideal weight fraction of FFO-NP addition, the accretion of the FFO-NP was found, which caused a decline in durability properties.

Coupling of carboxymethyl starch with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate: A new sorbent for the wastewater remediation of methylene blue

Textile and printing industries play a vital role in the economy of any country. But the effluents of these industries, which contain toxic Methylene Blue (MB) dye when mixed with fresh water, make it unfit for human health and aquatic life. For the removal of MB, different adsorbents were used, but they were expensive, non-biodegradable or less effective. In this research, novel carboxymethyl starch grafted poly 2-carboxyethyl acrylate (CM-St-g-P2CEtA) was synthesized by reacting carboxymethyl starch with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate. The reaction followed a free radical polymerization mechanism. The structure and properties of CM-St-g-P2CEtA were investigated by advanced analytical techniques. The CM-St-g-P2CEtA was employed for the remediation of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from wastewater. The removal percentage (%R) of MB was checked under different parameters, like different pH levels, different initial concentrations of dye, different adsorbent doses, and different contact times. The results obtained during the experiment were subjected to different adsorption and kinetic models. In the kinetic investigation, the experimental results were best represented by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model due to its high R² value of 0.999. Similarly, with a regression coefficient (R²) value of 0.947, the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was best represented by the experimental results. The Langmuir adsorption model showed that MB dye was adsorbed on the surface of CM-St-g-P2CEtA in a monolayer pattern. The pseudo 2nd order kinetic model suggested that the adsorption process favored chemisorption mechanism. The CM-St-g-P2CEtA showed maximum percentage removal efficiency (%R) of 99.3% for MB dye.

Electrochemical monitoring of 4-chlorophenol as a water pollutant via carbon paste electrode amplified with Fe3O4 incorporated cellulose nanofibers (CNF)

A crucial problem that needs to be resolved is the sensitive and selective monitoring of chlorophenol compounds, especifically 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), one of the most frequently used organic industrial chemicals. In light of this, the goal of this study was to synthesize Fe₃O₄ incorporated cellulose nanofiber composite (Fe₃O₄/CNF) as an amplifier in the development of a modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) for 4-CP detection. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to evaluate the morphology of the synthesized nanocatalyst, while differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) techniques were implemented to illuminate the electrochemical characteristics of the fabricated sensor. The ultimate electrochemical sensor (Fe₃O₄/CNF/CPE) was used as a potent electrochemical sensor for monitoring 4-CP in the concentration range of 1.0 nM-170 μM with a limit of detection value of 0.5 nM. As a result of optimization studies, 8.0 mg Fe₃O₄/CNF was found to be the ideal catalyst concentration, whereas pH = 6.0 was chosen as the ideal pH. The 4-CP's oxidation current was found to be over 1.67 times greater at ideal operating conditions than it was at the surface of bare CPE, and its oxidation potential decreased by about 120 mV. By using the standard addition procedure on samples of drinking water and wastewater, the suggested capability of Fe₃O₄/CNF/CPE to detect 4-CP was further investigated. The recovery range was found to be 98.52-103.66%. This study paves the way for the customization of advanced nanostructure for the application in electrochemical sensors resulting in beneficial environmental impact and enhancing human health.

Transformation of waste seed biomass of Cordia myxa into valuable bioenergy through membrane bioreactor using green nanoparticles of indium oxide

Depletion of non-renewable fuel has obliged researchers to seek out sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. Membranes have proven to be an effective technique in biofuel production for reaction, purification, and separation, with the ability to use both porous and non-porous membranes. It is demonstrated that a membrane-based sustainable and green production can result in a high degree of process intensification, whereas the recovery and repurposing of catalysts and alcohol are anticipated to increase the process economics. Therefore, in this study sustainable biodiesel was synthesized from inedible seed oil (37 wt%) of Cordia myxa using a membrane reactor. Transesterification was catalyzed by heterogenous nano-catalyst of indium oxide prepared with leaf extract of Boerhavia diffusa. Highest biodiesel yield of 95 wt% was achieved at methanol to oil molar ratio of 7:1, catalyst load 0.8 wt%, temperature 82.5 °C and time 180 min In₂O₃ nanoparticles exhibited reusability up to five successive transesterification rounds. The production of methyl esters was confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. The predominant fatty acid methyl ester detected in the biodiesel was 5, 8-octadecenoic acid. Biodiesel fuel qualities were determined to be comparable to worldwide ASTM D-6571 and EN-14214 standards. Finally, it was concluded that membrane technology can result in a highly intensified reaction process while efficient recovery of both nano catalysts and methanol increases the economics of transesterification and lead to sustainable production.

Energy, exergy, economic, environment, exergo-environment based assessment of amine-based hybrid solvents for natural gas sweetening

Natural gas is the cleanest form of fossil fuel that needs to be purified from CO₂ and H₂S to diminish harmful emissions and provide feasible processing. The conventional chemical and physical solvents used for this purpose have many drawbacks, including corrosion, solvent loss, high energy requirement, and the formation of toxic compounds, which ultimately disrupt the process and affect the environment. Hybrid solvents have lately been researched to cater to these liabilities and enhance process economics. This study screened eight solvents based on CO₂ selectivity viscosity, absorption enthalpy, corrosivity, working capacity, specific heat, and vapor pressure. From the screened solvents, ten cases of hybrid solvents are simulated and optimized on Aspen HYSYS®. Furthermore, 5Es (Energy, Exergy, Economic, Environmental, and Exergy-environmental) analyses were performed on optimized cases, and results were compared with the base case, MEA (30 wt%). The hybrid blend of Sulfolane and MDEA with weight percentages of 6% and 24%, respectively, showed the highest energy savings of 20% concerning the base case. In addition, it offered 93% savings in exergy destruction and 17.26% in the total operating cost of the process. It is also promising to the environment due to reduced entropy sent to the ecosystem and controlled CO₂ emissions. Therefore, the blend of Sulfolane and MDEA is proposed to Supersede the conventional solvent MEA for the natural gas sweetening process.

Prediction of carbon-dioxide activity coefficient for solubility in ionic liquids using multi-non-linear regression analysis

Activity coefficient values offer insight into the intermolecular interactions between the solute and the solvent and the deviation from the ideal behavior. CO2 capture from different industrial processes is a globally pertinent issue and the search for suitable chemicals is required. To address the issue, knowledge of activity coefficient values is crucial for CO2 separation-based process. In this regard, a correlation is developed that predicts the coefficient of CO2 activity in ionic liquids by multi-nonlinear regression analysis. The correlation is developed between the pressure range of 1-50 bar and the temperature range of 298.15-33.15 K for mole fractions of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7. Outliers' analysis is performed using the boxplot method to determine the suitability of ranges of the selected input parameters. The preceding literature does not predict the activity coefficient in relatively lower to higher temperature and pressure ranges for CO2 solubility in ionic liquids. Initially, the activity coefficient values from COSMO-RS were obtained and compared with the correlation results. The COSMO-RS and the correlation predicted results were subsequently validated with the experimental data. The average absolute error (AAE%) of the predicted correlation values is 19.53% while the root mean square error (RMSE) value is 0.465. The correlation can be used in the future to predict the CO2 activity coefficient values in ionic liquids to facilitate qualitative analyses of their CO2 capture efficiency.

Preparation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane blended with acrylamide grafted bentonite for oily water treatment

The current work aims to advance the hydrophilicity, morphology, and antifouling characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes for oily wastewater separation by incorporating modified bentonite. The surface of bentonite nanoparticles is altered by adopting the "grafting from" method using the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) approach. The PVC-based membrane is first prepared by blending acrylamide grafted bentonite (AAm-g-bentonite). AAm is grafted on bentonite in the presence of 2,2'-Bipyridyl and copper (I) bromide as a catalyst. The modified bentonite nanoparticles are studied using multiple techniques, such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), sedimentation tests, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), etc. Flat-sheet PVC-based membrane is prepared by blending AAm-g-bentonite using the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Different methods, including FE-SEM, FTIR, sedimentation test, contact angle, porosity, antifouling property, and filtration studies of pure and oily water, are used to characterize and determine the performance of mixed-matrix membranes. Membrane performance is improved in the presence of modified bentonite (i.e., AAm-g-bentonite), with the best result achieved at PVC/AAm-g-ben-8 (i.e., 8 wt % of AAm-g-bentonite). Enhanced pure water flux (293.14 Lm^-2h^-1), permeate flux (123.96 Lm^-2h^-1), and oil rejection >93.2% are obtained by the reduced contact angle (49.1°) and improved porosity (71.22%).

Environmental remediation through various composite membranes moieties: Performances and thermomechanical properties

Pollution harms ecosystems and poses a serious threat to human health around the world through direct or indirect effects on air, water, and land. The importance of remediating effluents is paramount to reducing environmental concerns. CO₂ emissions are removed efficiently and efficaciously with mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which are viable replacements for less efficient and costly membranes. In the field of membrane technology, MMMs are advancing rapidly due to their good separation properties. The selection of filler to be incorporated in mixed matrix membranes is very considered very important. There has been considerable interest in MOFs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), ionic liquids (ILs), carbon molecular sieves (CMSs), sulfonated fillers (SFs), and layered silicates (LSs) as inorganic fillers for improving the properties of mixed matrix membranes. These fillers promise superb results and long durability for mixed matrix membranes based on them. The purpose of this review is to review different fillers used in MMMs for improving separation properties, limitations, and thermomechanical properties for environmental control and remediation.

A review on properties, challenges and commercial aspects of eco-friendly biolubricants productions

Lubricants operate as antifriction media, preserving machine reliability, facilitating smooth operation, and reducing the likelihood of frequent breakdowns. The petroleum-based reserves are decreasing globally, leading to price increases and raising concerns about environmental degradation. The researchers are concentrating their efforts on developing and commercializing an environmentally friendly lubricant produced from renewable resources. Biolubricants derived from nonedible vegetable oils are environmentally favorable because of their non-toxicity, biodegradability, and close to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. The demand for bio lubricants in industry and other sectors is increasing due to their non-toxic, renewable, and environmentally friendly nature. Good lubrication, anti-corrosion, and high flammability are characteristic properties of vegetable oils due to their unique structure. This study presents several key properties of nonedible oils that are used to produce lubricants via the transesterification process. Bibliometric analysis is also performed, which provides us with a better understanding of previous studies related to the production of bio lubricants from the transesterification process. Only 371 published documents in the Scopus database were found to relate to the production of bio lubricants using the transesterification process. The published work was mostly dominated by research articles (286; 77.088%). Significant development can be seen in recent years, with the highest occurrence in 2021, reaching 68 publications accounting for 18.38% of the total documents. In the second step, (i) the authors with the most number of publications; (ii) journals with the most productions; (iii) most productive countries; and (iv) the authors' most frequently used keywords were evaluated. These results will provide a pathway for researchers interested in this field. Lastly, recommendation is made on research gaps to device possible strategies for its commercialization.

Challenges and issues with the performance of boron nitride rooted membrane for gas separation

Various fillers such as zeolites, metal-organic framework, carbon, metal framework, graphene, and covalent organic framework have been incorporated into the polymers. However, these materials are facing issues such as incompatibility with the polymer matrix, which leads to the formation of non-selective voids and thus, reduces the gas separation properties. Recent studies show that hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) possesses attractive characteristics such as high aspect ratio, good compatibility with polymer materials, enhanced gas barrier performance, and improved mechanical properties, which could make h-BN the potential candidate to replace conventional fillers. The synthesis of materials and membranes is the subject of this review, which focuses on recent developments and ongoing problems. Additionally, a summary of the mathematical models that were utilised to forecast how well polymer composites would perform in gas separation is provided. It was found in the previous studies that tortuosity is the governing factor for the determination of the effectiveness of a nanofiller as a gas barrier enhancer in polymer matrices. The shape of the nanofiller particles and sheets, disorientation and distribution of the nanofillers within the polymer matrix, state of aggregation and rate of reaggregation of the nanofiller particles, as well as the compatibility of the nanofiller with the polymer matrix all played a significant role in determining how well a particular nanofiller will perform in enhancing the gas barrier properties of the nanocomposites. For this purpose, this review has been focused not only on the experimentation work but also on the effect of tortuosity, exfoliation quality, compatibility, disorientation, and reaggregation of nanofillers.

Sudan I monitoring as a hazardous azo dye using an electroanalytical tool amplified with NiO/SWCNTs-ionic liquid catalysts

Sudan I is an azo dye that causes cancer and is not allowed to be used in food products. The current study focused on the design and manufacture of an electrochemical sensor modified with NiO/SWCNTs, as a nano-catalyst, and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (1H3MIbTMI), as an ionic liquid binder, to monitor Sudan I as azo additive dyes in various food samples. The modified carbon paste electrode (CPE/NiO/SWCNTs/1H3MIbTMI) offered superior electrochemical performance metrics as an analytical sensor to detect trace levels of Sudan I within the concentration range of 1.0 nM-250 μM. The limit of detection was determined as 0.3 nM by the differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) technique. The proposed CPE/NiO/SWCNTs/1H3MIbTMI can be put forward to be employed as an analytical instrument for sensing Sudan I in various culinary sauces, including chili, tomato, and strawberry sauces. The obtained recovery range was determined as 97.6%-104.35%. These findings demonstrated the effectiveness of the newly created material and its potential for usage as a novel analytical instrument.

Melanin Treatment Effect of Vacuoles-Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Combined with Ascorbic Acid

Currently, ascorbic acid (AA) is widely used as a skin whitening material, but, AA, an unstable hydrophilic molecule, cannot penetrate the skin easily, due to the hydrophobic character of the stratum corneum. Therefore, we conjugated AA with hydrated zinc oxide-an inorganic matrix with positive surface charge, to improve the stability of AA. The metal-conjugated-ascorbic acid (ZnAA) was then combined with yeast vacuole through the vacuolar membrane proteins that relate to metal transportation to create an enhanced vacuole that contained ZnAA. The characteristics of vacuole with ZnAA (ZnAA_Vac) were next examined by various tests that included X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Furthermore, the ability of ZnAA_Vac to degrade melanin was confirmed in both melanoma cell line B16F10, and the artificial human skin MelanoDerm. The results showed that ZnAA_Vac possessed a higher depigmenting effect than the wild-type vacuole or ascorbic acid by reducing 75% of melanin color. Interestingly, ZnAA_Vac was found to be harmless, and did not cause any cytotoxicity to the cells. Overall, ZnAA_Vac is expected to provide a robust, harmless, and effective whitening agent for the skin.

Ultra-permeable intercalated metal-induced microporous polymer nano-dots rooted smart membrane for environmental remediation

Energy efficient CO₂ separation using ultrathin smart membranes must possess efficient permeation performance, higher surface area and hydrostatic stability at industrially relevant high pressures. However, ultrathin membranes are susceptible to lower surface area, plasticization and swelling which reduces the performance at higher pressure under humidified conditions. This paper evaluates the routes for the potential intercalated effect of metal-induced microporous polymers (MMPs) dots into a cellulose-based polymer matrix to enhance promising properties, including the surface area, CO₂ permeation performance, plasticization resistance and hydrostatic stability of ultrathin smart membranes at high pressure. The MMP dots-rooted smart membrane demonstrated 55 nm thickness of ultrathin selective layer with a higher surface of 220 cm². The enhancement of CO₂ permeability from 14.1 to 108.9 Barrer and CO₂/CH₄ ideal selectivity from 11.8 to 31.1 was observed due to the integration of MMP dots into the cellulose polymer. This result could be due to enhancement of nitrogen lone pair electron interactions with CO₂ followed by amines group which improved the CO₂ adsorption on the membrane surface. The MMP dots-rooted membrane demonstrated plasticization resistance up to 26 bar pressure, as compared to a pristine polymer membrane which is a percentage increase of 160% under humidified conditions. The resulting ultrathin smart membrane exhibited stable performance for a duration of 200 h under humidified conditions which confirmed the higher hydrostatic stability of the membrane. These findings confirmed the potential of MMP dots materials for the development of an industrial scale CO₂ separation process using intercalated membranes.

Investigation of transport properties of 6FDA-durene polymeric membrane for landfill gas application using molecular simulation approach

Gas separation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) from landfill gas (LFG) is very crucial to be undertaken to treat significant greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted to the atmosphere. Among the well-developed conventional technologies, membrane has drawn a huge attraction from many researchers to leverage on its application, which favors an efficient and environmentally safe process. In membrane technology, inorganic membrane type requires a complex and pricey fabrication process which is contradictory from the polymeric membrane features. The impressive gas permeability and acceptable value of selectivity possessed by polymeric membranes has contributed to its main attractiveness over the other types of membranes available. Besides, the frequent approach used which is through experimental methods requires complicated procedures and possess high difficulty to obtain a defect-free membrane sample. In this work, 6FDA-durene has been investigated by employing a molecular simulation approach to further examine its fractional free volume within the membrane matrix and transport properties. The structure creation of complete framework and the analysis of project deliverables has been adopted through a molecular dynamic simulation in Materials Studio software. FFV value obtained based on the simulated framework is 0.1743 which establishes about 3.15% deviation to the published experimental works. Upon the increment of operating temperature, most of the gasses would be in their activation condition and possess higher gas diffusivities and permeabilities. However, with increasing operating pressure simulation, the membrane framework was compressed and reached its asymptotic limit at 7 atm which acts as a maximum point when the membrane system becomes saturated. In both cases, the selectivity of CO₂/CH₄ gas pairs are validated with low percentage deviation (less than 10%) towards the reported experimental works hence affirms the reliability of results and methodology conducted.

Polymeric membranes for environmental remediation: A product space model perspective

The development of polymeric membranes from polymers such as polystyrene (PS), polyvinylchloride (PVC), and their associated family has brought great momentum to the environmental remediation universe, mainly due to their surprisingly diverse and multi-purpose nature. Their usage has surged 20 times in the last half-century and is likely to double again in the coming 20 years. As a result, the polymeric materials economy and commercialization of research become increasingly important as a possible option for a country to boost prosperity while decreasing its reliance on limited raw resources and mitigating negative externalities. This transformation demands a systematic strategy, which involves progress beyond improving the existing models and building new avenues for collaboration. In this work, a sophisticated system, i.e., product space model (PSM), has been presented, explicitly appraising the opportunity space for United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, India, Canada, Indonesia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Colombia for their potential future industrialization and commercialization of polymeric membranes for environmental remediation. The results revealed that UK, Italy, Poland and India are at advantageous positions owing to their close proximity of (distance<2) and their placement in Parsimonious policy, which is the most desired quadrant of Policy Map of PSM, Canada and Indonesia have medium level opportunities, while Russia and Saudi Arabia have opportunities with more challenges to fully exploit the unexploited polymers products in terms of membranes for environmental remediation and prove favorable for export diversification, sustainable economic growth, and commercialization.

Recent advances in electrochemical sensor developments for detecting emerging pollutant in water environment

In the latest times, considerable studies have been performed closer to detecting emerging pollutant such as paracetamol in wastewater. Electrochemical sensor developments have recently started to determine in fewer concentrations effectively. The detection of paracetamol using standard protocols corresponding to electroanalytical techniques has a greater impact noticed in directing the detecting process toward biosensors. Non-enzymatic sensors are the peak of all electro analysis approaches. Functionalized materials, such as metal oxide nanoparticles, conducting polymers, and carbon-based materials for electrode surface functionalization have been used to create a fortification for distributing passive enzyme-free biosensors. Synergic effects are possible by enhancing loading capacity and mass transfer of reactants for attaining high analytical sensitivity using a variety of nanomaterials with large surface areas. The main focus of this study is to address the prevailing issues in the identification of paracetamol with the tasks in the non-enzymatic sensors field, followed by the useful methods of electro analysis studies.

Sulfonated calixarene modified Poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles:A promising adsorbent for Removal of Vanadium Ions from aqueous media

The poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based nanoparticle was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization method and then post modified with Calixarene using (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane organo-silane as a linker after OH-treatment. The prepared structure was applied for efficient adsorption of Vanadium ions in the aqueous solution after characterization by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, DLS, and EDX. Additional investigations discovered that the prepared adsorbent has a good capacity to adsorb vanadium ions. The effect of key experimental factors was studied to find the optimal point of adsorbent efficiency including the initial concentration of analyte, sorbent dosage, pH of the solution, contact time, and type/quantity of the eluents. It was specified, the maximum adsorption capacity for the synthesized nanoparticles was obtained about 322 mg g^-1. The adsorption mechanism was revealed that the model of Langmuir isotherm well-matched compared to the others due to the calculated equilibrium data. Besides, the kinetics of the adsorption process was fitted with pseudo-second-order. Eventually, the prepared adsorbent was successfully applied in vanadium adsorption from real water media.

Removal of pharmaceuticals (diclofenac and amoxicillin) by maltodextrin/reduced graphene and maltodextrin/reduced graphene/copper oxide nanocomposites

Due to the scarcity of water and the growing industrialization, pharmaceutical wastewater treatment is of particular importance. For this reason, it is necessary to achieve an efficient method to eliminate all types of pharmaceutical pollutants. Herein, synthetic nano-composite is proposed to take a step towards improving the operation of removing pharmaceutical contaminants from the environment and aquatic and industrial effluents. Binary (maltodextrin/reconstituted graphene nanocomposite) and ternary (maltodextrin/reconstituted graphene nanocomposite/copper oxide) nanocomposites were prepared and characterized using, FT-IR, FESEM-EDS, TEM, DLS, and XRD. The nanocomposites were used to eliminate diclofenac and amoxicillin as Pharmaceuticals. The removal of amoxicillin at a concentration of 30 mg/L with an adsorbent dose of 0.05 g and a pH of 7.4 and an optimal temperature of 20 °C in 10 min has the highest removal rate of 86%. In addition, diclofenac with nano-adsorbents prepared under optimal conditions, including an initial concentration of 20 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 0.05 g, adsorption time of 7 min, a temperature of 20 °C and a pH of 7, has the highest removal efficiency of 94%. The results indicated that the prepared nanocomposites are alternative adsorbents to remove Pharmaceuticals from water.

Highly Sensitive Detection of Carcinoembryonic Antigen via an Electrochemical Platform Fabricated by AuNPs/Streptavidin/Reduced Graphene Oxide

Tumor markers are one of the important indicators for early cancer diagnosis. As a new analytical method, electrochemical immunosensing analysis has the advantages of high sensitivity, good selectivity, and rapid detection, which is of great significance for the detection of tumor markers. In this work, an AuNP/reduced graphene oxide (AuNP/rGO) composite was synthesized. We used it for electrochemical sensor fabrication with the assistance of the biotin–streptavidin protein (SA) system to further amplify the signal to achieve sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). In addition, AuNPs have been incorporated due to their good electrical conductivity and biocompatibility, which can accelerate electron transfer at the electrode interface and improve the loading capacity to capture antibodies. The fabricated AuNPs/SA/rGO has a large working surface area and high material utilization ratio, which improves the catalytic capacity of H₂O₂ reduction and effectively amplifies the current signal. The linear range of the response current signal of the sensor toward the CEA concentration is 20 fg/ml to 200 ng/ml, and the limit of detection can achieve 6.2 fg/ml. In addition, the fabricated immunosensor has good reproducibility, selectivity, and stability.
