Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of nutritional status in non-dialysis elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and comorbid depression is clinically important. Determining key determinants of nutritional status in this population significantly improves nutritional management strategies and assists these patients overcome the disease.
AIM To investigate the factors influencing the nutritional status of non-dialysis elderly patients with CKD and comorbid depression.
METHODS This study retrospectively collected the clinical data of 182 non-dialysis elderly patients with CKD and comorbid depression admitted at Tangdu Hospital, Air Force Medical University, from January 2022 to June 2023. The participants were categorized based on the presence of malnutrition into the nutritionally normal group (n = 97) and the malnutrition group (n = 85). The clinical data of the two groups were subjected to unifactorial and multifactorial regression to analyze the factors influencing malnutrition among the participants. Data included sex, age, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat, basal metabolic rate (BMR), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cr), albumin (Alb), hemoglobin (Hb), pre-albumin (PA), patient-generated subjective global assessment, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score to identify depressive symptoms. After admitting the patients to the hospital, 5 mL of peripheral serum was withdrawn, the centrifuge was operated at 3500 rpm/minute with a centrifugal radius of 10 cm for 10 minutes, serum was collected, and serum Alb, Hb, PA, BUN, and Cr levels were detected using a fully automatic biochemical analyzer. The results were assessed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21.0 for conducting technical analyses. Metric data are presented as the mean ± standard error of the mean and replaced using the t-test. Count data are expressed as case counts and percentages and were replaced using the χ2 test. Effective factors were modeled using logistic return modeling.
RESULTS BMI, BMR, and serum Alb, Hb, PA, and Cr levels were lower in the nutritionally normal group than in the malnutrition group. Furthermore, BUN levels, PHQ-9 scores, and the percentage of anxiety symptoms were greater in the nutritionally normal group than in the normal nutrition group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Multiple factorial interpretations revealed anxiety and serum Alb, Hb, and PA levels as factors influencing the nutritional status of non-dialysis elderly patients with CKD and depression (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION Serum Alb, Hb, PA levels, and anxiety symptoms are all factors influencing malnutrition in non-dialysis elderly patients with CKD and depression; hence, clinical interventions can be targeted to patients with the above characteristics.

Abstract
Background Appetite loss is common in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the psychosocial and biological mechanisms behind appetite loss remain unclear, particularly in the adolescent MDD population. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the links between appetite loss and clinical symptoms as well as inflammatory cytokines levels in this population. Methods Between January and December 2021, this study included 171 depressed adolescents. A range of scales were used to assess the patients' clinical symptoms, including depression severity, negative life events, insomnia, and alexithymia. Additionally, plasma inflammatory cytokines levels were measured, including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Results The prevalence of appetite loss among adolescents with MDD was as high as 76.0%. Univariate analyses showed that patients with appetite loss had higher scores of the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), interpersonal relationships, study pressure, punishment, sense of loss, the Insomnia Severity Index Scale (ISI) and difficulty identifying feelings, as well as higher levels of Log IL-6 (all p < 0.05) Furthermore, regression analyses revealed that appetite loss was independently associated with HAMD score (OR = 1.158, 95% CI = 1.091-1.229, p < 0.001), punishment score (OR = 1.117, 95% CI = 1.039-1.201, p = 0.003), and Log IL-6 level (OR = 5.041, 95% CI = 1.137-22.344, p = 0.033). Conclusion Adolescents with MDD face an elevated risk of appetite loss, which may correlate with clinical symptoms such as depression severity and negative life events, as well as elevated IL-6 level. Healthcare professionals should target these risk factors, including inflammation, to mitigate appetite loss.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a major global health concern that is intimately linked to neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and complicated metabolic abnormalities. Traditional antidepressants frequently fall short, highlighting the urgent need for new, safer, and more acceptable therapeutic techniques. Phytochemicals, i.e., natural antidepressants derived from plants, are emerging as powerful plant-based therapies capable of targeting many pathogenic pathways at the same time. Summary: This narrative review synthesizes evidence from preclinical and clinical studies on the efficacy of phytochemicals such as curcumin, polyphenols, flavonoids, and alkaloids in lowering depressed symptoms. Consistent data show that these substances have neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, altering neuroimmune interactions, reducing oxidative damage, and improving mitochondrial resilience. Particularly, polyphenols and flavonoids have great therapeutic potential because of their capacity to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, inhibit cytokine activity, and encourage neuroplasticity mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Despite promising results, the heterogeneity in study designs, phytochemical formulations, and patient demographics highlights the importance of thorough, standardized clinical studies. Conclusions: This review identifies phytochemicals as compelling adjuvant or independent therapies in depression treatment, providing multimodal mechanisms and enhanced tolerability. Additional research into improved dosage, pharmacokinetics, long-term safety, and integrative therapy approaches is essential. Using phytotherapeutics could considerably improve holistic and customized depression care, encouraging new research routes in integrative neuroscience and clinical psychiatry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess mental health related outcomes of Recipe4Health, a multisectoral social care partnership implementing produce prescriptions with or without group medical visits (GMVs). STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN Recipe4Health was implemented at five community health centers from 2020 to 2023. Primary care teams referred patients with food insecurity and/or nutrition-sensitive chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, depression) to 16 weeks of Food Farmacy (produce prescriptions) with the option of GMV participation. We used a convergent mixed-methods design including survey and interview data. DATA SOURCES AND ANALYTIC SAMPLE We conducted (1) participant surveys pre- and post-intervention and (2) semi-structured interviews with Recipe4Health participants and partner organization staff. Linear mixed effects models examined changes in mental health and related outcomes. Interviews were analyzed using codebook thematic analysis. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Program participants were middle-aged, primarily women, and from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds (majority Latine and Black). At baseline, moderate or severe depression and/or anxiety symptoms were reported by 77/188 (41%) of Food Farmacy-only participants, and 113/284 (40%) of Food Farmacy +GMV participants. Among Food Farmacy-only participants, post-intervention depression and anxiety symptoms significantly improved only among those who did not have baseline depression/anxiety (PHQ9: -1.7 [95% CI: -2.8, -0.6]; GAD7: -1.8 [95% CI: -2.9, -0.8]). Among Food Farmacy +GMV participants, mental health symptoms improved regardless of baseline mental health; among those with baseline depression/anxiety: PHQ9: -2.4 (95% CI: -3.6, -1.2); GAD7: -0.9 (95% CI: -2.0, 0.1); among those without: PHQ9: -2.2 (95% CI: -3.2, -1.2); GAD7: -2.2 (95% CI: -3.1, -1.2). Improvements in social needs (food insecurity, loneliness) and health-related behaviors (fruit/vegetable intake, physical activity) varied by intervention arm and baseline depression/anxiety symptom level. In interviews, staff and patients endorsed produce prescriptions for improving nutrition and food insecurity, and GMVs for increasing social support. CONCLUSION Social care interventions providing vegetables and fruit, with or without group medical visits, may concurrently address mental health symptoms and social needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Late-life depression is a prevalent public health issue among the elderly. Imbalances in trace elements are increasingly recognized as associated with depression; however, the majority of current research has concentrated on examining the link between blood-based trace elements levels and depressive symptoms. Our objective was to determine if a similar correlation is observed between urinary trace elements levels and depressive symptoms. METHODS We employed stratified, multi-stage random sampling to recruit 400 participants, aged 60 years or older, from a community-based population in a city located in southern China. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Items (PHQ-9) was utilized to evaluate depressive symptoms. The concentration of trace elements in urine was detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association between urinary trace elements levels and depressive symptoms, as well as the interactions between these levels and potential covariates. The Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) model with four knots to further explore the association between urinary trace elements and depressive symptoms risk after adjusting for the confounders. RESULTS A total of 391 participants were investigated, including 50 (12.6 %) in depressive symptom group and 341 (87.4 %) in non-depressive symptom group. Urinary copper levels were positively correlated with depressive symptoms. Compared with the lowest tertile of urinary copper, the multivariate adjusted odds ratios of depressive symptom were 2.58 (1.18-5.64) in tertile 3. Furthermore, we found the interactions between urinary copper and gender were p < 0.05. The multivariate correction OR for T3 versus T1 in males was 21.10 (1.79-248.13) (Pfor trend = 0.002). RCS analysis revealed a positive association between copper levels and depressive symptoms (P-overall association = 0.025, and P-nonlinear = 0.161). No significant difference was observed in the risk of developing depressive symptoms among individuals with urinary copper concentrations below 8.22 μg/g creatinine. However, the risk of depressive symptoms increases progressively as the urinary copper concentration exceeds this threshold. CONCLUSION Urinary copper levels are correlated with the development of depressive symptoms, and copper exposure in men is more sensitive to depressive symptoms. Urinary copper, as a non-invasive test, is a promising indicator of depression symptoms in environmental exposure.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the heterogeneity in depression trajectories and factors influencing depression during radiotherapy in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS Between August 2023 and May 2024, we longitudinally tracked the symptoms of 146 patients with gastrointestinal cancer at T0 (pre-radiotherapy), T1 (mid-radiotherapy), and T2 (1-month post-radiotherapy). Group-based trajectory models were used to identify subgroups of depression trajectories. A fit-criteria assessment plot was used to assess the accuracy of grouping, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze the potential independent factors associated with the subgroups. RESULTS Patients were categorized into three subgroups: no depression (31.5 %), mild depression (54.1 %), and moderate depression (14.4 %) group. Patients aged >65 years (P < 0.05), those with a malnutrition-inflammation complex (P < 0.05), and those accompanied by children (P < 0.05) were more likely to belong to the moderate depression group. Between-group and within-group differences in psychoneurologic symptoms, such as fatigue, remained consistent with depression. Depressive symptoms were most severe mid-radiotherapy, and moderately depressed patients were at risk of developing major depression. CONCLUSIONS There was significant heterogeneity in depression during radiotherapy among patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Clinicians should focus on identifying high-risk patients with depression aged >65 years, those with a malnutrition-inflammation complex, and those accompanied by children. They should actively implement pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments and refer them to specialized psychological clinics, if necessary, to prevent the occurrence of major depression.

Abstract
Introduction Depression is a psychological condition characterized by a persistent low mood. This study investigates the relationship between depressive symptoms and food preferences in undergraduate students. Methods A cross-sectional design was employed among 502 students at Zanjan University of Medical Sciences. Data collection included validated questionnaires on food preferences, depression levels (Beck Depression Inventory), and physical activity (IPAQ), along with anthropometric measurements. Food preferences were analyzed for six groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat/fish, and snacks. Depression severity was categorized into six levels based on BDI scores: normal (1-9), mild (10-16), borderline (17-20), moderate (21-30), severe (31-40), and very severe (41-63). Depression risk was defined as the odds of belonging to a higher Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) category. Results Participants with severe depression had lower preferences for grains, fruits, and vegetables but higher preferences for snacks. Adjusted analyses revealed that higher preferences for fruits (OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.68-0.98) and vegetables (OR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.71-0.94) were significantly associated with reduced depression risk, while snack preferences increased risk (OR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.03-1.68). However, the association between grain preferences and depression risk was not statistically significant after adjustment (OR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.74-1.03). Conclusion These findings highlight the bidirectional link between diet and mental health, underscoring the importance of dietary interventions in mental health strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE scientific literature highlights risk factors linked to the onset of psychopathology in different medical pathological contexts. Acromegaly is a rare condition, particularly noteworthy due to the associated clinical psychological features. This research aimed at understanding the main psychopathological outcomes related to acromegaly, with particular emphasis to anxiety and depression. METHODS In January 2024, in line with PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search based on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and PsycInfo was conducted to detect studies considering anxiety, depression and alexithymia in patients suffering from acromegaly. The Keywords used for the search phase were "Acromegaly" AND "Depression" OR "Anxiety" OR "Alexithymia". RESULTS Fifty-five studies were eligible. Anxiety and depression were significantly present in patients with acromegaly, with prevalence rates variable based on disease status and psycho-diagnostic instruments. None of the included studies reported alexithymia in patients with acromegaly. No significant difference was found regarding anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with acromegaly in comparison with patients suffering from different pituitary diseases and chronic conditions. Anxiety and depression were associated with lower perceived HR-QoL, presence of comorbidity, joint issues, delayed diagnosis, disease duration and body image concerns. CONCLUSIONS Anxiety and depression may be encountered in patients with acromegaly, impacting HR-QoL and the course of the disease. This systematic review suggests that a deeper evaluation of clinical psychological features in patients suffering from acromegaly is needed. Particularly, the early detection of clinical psychological symptoms may lead to multi-integrate interventions promoting individuals' well-being and a better HR-QoL.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element of the utmost importance to human health. Its deficiency induces various disorders. Se species can be absorbed by organisms and metabolized to hydrogen selenide for the biosynthesis of selenoproteins, selenonucleic acids, or selenosugars. Se in mammals mainly acts as selenoproteins to exert their biological functions. The brain ranks highest in the specific hierarchy of organs to maintain the level of Se and the expression of selenoproteins under the circumstances of Se deficiency. Dyshomeostasis of Se and dysregulation of selenoproteins result in encephalopathy such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis. This review provides a summary and discussion of Se metabolism, selenoprotein function, and their roles in modulating brain diseases based on the most currently published literature. It focuses on how Se is utilized and transported to the brain, how selenoproteins are biosynthesized and function physiologically in the brain, and how selenoproteins are involved in neurodegenerative diseases. At the end of this review, the perspectives and problems are outlined regarding Se and selenoproteins in the regulation of encephalopathy.

Abstract
This study explores the effects of a nutraceutical blend with prebiotics, β-glucans, essential minerals, and silymarin on gut microbiota, inflammation, and sleep quality in obesity through microbiota reshaping and metabolic improvements over 90 days. A double-blind, randomized trial was conducted on 77 participants divided into two groups receiving either a standard nutraceutical blend (NSupple) or a silymarin-enriched blend (NSupple_Silybum). Fecal and plasma samples were collected at baseline and post-supplementation for gut microbiota, metabolic, and inflammatory marker analysis. The results showed a reduction in body weight, waist-to-height ratio, total cholesterol, and fractions in the NSupple_Silybum group. There was a dysbiosis recovery shown by the increase in beneficial gut bacteria, such as Lentisphaerae phylum, Lactobacillus and Faecalibacterium genera, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in the NSupple group, with a concurrent reduction in Adlercreutzia and Sutterella in the NSupple_Silybum group. Both groups demonstrated improved inflammatory profiles by the reduced TNF-α/IL-10 ratio, reduced cortisol levels, and reduced Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio. Additionally, improvements in sleep quality were associated with reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokines and improved microbiota composition. The nutraceutical blend reshaped gut microbiota, enhanced anti-inflammatory species, and improved metabolic and sleep parameters, highlighting its potential as a nutritional strategy for managing obesity and reducing inflammation.

Abstract
Objective To improve further the management of the nutritional status and dietary habits of depressed patients. Methods This study investigated the effect of different severity states of depressive symptoms on serum and erythrocyte folate levels using the Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2017 to 2020. We comprised a sample of 4,872 cases from NHANES database. We developed 3 linear regression models to assess the effect of depressive symptoms on erythrocyte folate and serum folate by collating and analyzing the data. The relationship between depression severity and erythrocyte folate as well as serum folate was also mutually validated by the results of multiple logistic regression. Finally, we made restricted cubic spline plots using the glm function of R. Results Depression remained negatively correlated with serum folate levels with a OR value of -0.02, 95% CI of -0.05 ~ -0.00. Moderate depression was negatively correlated with folate, with a OR value of -0.03, 95% CI of -0.05 ~ -0.00. When exploring the association between different degrees of depressive symptoms and erythrocyte folate, it was unexpectedly found that major depression was negatively associated with erythrocyte folate with a OR value of -0.18, 95% CI of -0.31 ~ -0.04 after adjusting for all covariates. Conclusion Depression is associated with folate levels. The risk of serum folate insufficiency or erythrocyte folate insufficiency is higher after a positive depression. For different degrees of depressive symptoms, serum folate levels were significantly lower than normal in patients with moderate depression, while erythrocyte folate levels were lower than normal in patients with major depression. Therefore, attention should be paid to the dietary habits and nutritional status of patients with depression or depressive symptoms when they are undergoing long-term antidepressant treatment. Folic acid supplementation is recommended for patients with moderate or severe depression or for depressed patients who have developed unhealthy eating habits.

Abstract
Background The effects of multivitamin exposure on depression among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have not been thoroughly explored. This study aimed to explore the effects of individual vitamin intakes and the joint effect of the intake of multiple vitamins (including vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K) on depression risk in participants with CKD. Methods A total of 3,123 participants with CKD (weighted n = 25,186,480) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database from 2007 to 2014 were included. Weighted multivariate logistic regression models were utilized to analyze the associations of individual dietary vitamin intakes with depression risk. Additionally, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were performed to evaluate the joint effect of the intake of the nine vitamins on depression risk. Results The overall prevalence of depression was approximately 11.3% in the study participants. In the fully adjusted model, high intakes of vitamin A (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.40-0.74), vitamin B1 (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.48-0.95), vitamin B6 (OR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.49-0.99), vitamin D (OR: 0.67. 95% CI: 0.48-0.94), and vitamin K (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.44-0.85) were associated with a reduced likelihood of depression. BKMR and WQS regression showed that the joint effect of the intake of the nine dietary vitamins had a significant negative effect on depression, with vitamin A intake being the largest contributor in the two models. Lastly, WQS regression reflected the total mixed exposure effect of the nine vitamins (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.69-0.99). Conclusion High intakes of vitamins A, B1, B6, D, and K are associated with low depression risk in patients with CKD. Furthermore, co-exposure to the nine dietary vitamins is a crucial factor contributing to low depression risk in this population.

Abstract
The primary objective of this study was to investigate the potential pharmacological effects of Hyperoside (Hyp) extract on chronic social defeat stress (CSDS)-induced depression-like behavior in mice. We established CSDS mice to evaluate the antidepressant effects of Hyp. Additionally, We assessed the changes in neuroinflammatory factors in the TRX1/NLRP1/Caspase-1 signaling pathway using adeno-associated virus (AAV) and BV2 microglial cells. The expression levels of TRX1 protein and BDNF also increased by Hyp, while NLRP1 and Caspase-1 a significant decrease. Additionally, Hyp was found to inhibit TRX1 ubiquitination in the microglial inflammation model. In both in vivo and in vitro experiments, it was found that Hyp significantly promotes microglial polarization towards the M2 phenotype in the hippocampus and alleviates neuroinflammation, thereby improving depression-like behavior in CSDS mice. This is associated with the regulation of TRX1 ubiquitination, which inhibits the expression levels of NLRP1 and Caspase-1 proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study examined the association between adherence to the Mediterranean dietary approaches to stop hypertension Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, its components, and recurrent depressive symptoms (DepSs). METHODS The analyses included 4824 participants (73% men, mean age = 61; SD = 5.9) from the British Whitehall II cohort study. The MIND diet scores were derived from a validated 127-item food frequency questionnaire in 2002-2004. DepSs were assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (score ≥ 16) or by use of antidepressant drugs, and recurrence was defined as having DepSs in at least two of the four repeated measurements in the 2002-2004, 2007-2009, 2012-2013, and 2015-2016 follow-up phases. RESULTS Recurrent DepSs were observed in 13.3% of the participants over 13 years of follow-up. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants in the highest tertile of the MIND diet score (where a higher score represents a higher diet quality) had 26% lower odds of experiencing recurrent DepSs (OR = 0.74; 95% CI 0.58-0.93) compared to those in the lowest tertile. In mutually adjusted analyses of 14 MIND diet components in relation to recurrent DepSs, independent associations were observed for green leafy vegetables (OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.45-0.78), other vegetables (OR = 0.43, 95% CI:0.24-0.77), and berries (OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.61-0.89). CONCLUSIONS In this British prospective cohort, good adherence to the MIND diet, particularly to the recommendations for vegetables and berries, was associated with a lower risk of recurrent depressive symptoms, independent of socio-economic, health behavior, and health status factors, including baseline cognitive impairment and antecedents of DepSs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common neuropsychiatric complication after a stroke with complex mechanisms. However, few studies have identified the role of vitamin B12 and folate in the occurrence and pathophysiology of PSD. The aim of our study is to investigate the relationship among vitamin B12, folate, their transporter genes, and early-onset PSD. METHOD AND MATERIAL A total of 173 ischemic stroke patients were recruited in Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. We collected peripheral blood samples, clinical data, and demographics at admission. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale was used for screening for the existence of depression at 2 weeks after stroke onset. Serum vitamin B12 and folate level were measured based on double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of transcobalamin 2 (TCN2) and solute carrier family 19 member 1 were genotyped using SNPscanTM multiplex SNP typing Kit. RESULTS Eighty-four patients were diagnosed with PSD at 2 weeks after stroke onset, and the incidence rate was 48.6%. Serum vitamin B12 level in PSD group was significantly lower than those in the non-PSD group (p=0.018). Binary logistic regression revealed that TCN2 rs1801198 GG genotype and G allele were associated with an increased risk of PSD after adjustment for confounding factors (for GG genotype, OR = 4.253, 95% CI = 1.711~10.572, p = 0.002; for G allele, OR = 2.134, 95% CI = 1.362~3.343, p = 0.001). Moreover, individuals with the rs1801198 G allele in the PSD group exhibited lower vitamin B12 level than those with the rs1801198 G allele in the non-PSD group (p=0.045). CONCLUSION TCN2 rs1801198 and vitamin B12 are associated with the risk of early-onset PSD, and they may be involved in the development of PSD. Our study presents a novel standpoint for the treatment of PSD and gains insights into the mechanistic underpinnings of PSD.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the protective role of dietary vitamin B12 against depression, particularly as its prevalence is notably high among women experiencing urinary incontinence (UI). Nevertheless, the relationship between vitamin B12 intake, UI, and depression requires further clarification. This research aims to explore this association specifically among women. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 14,154 women sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2018. Depression was measured using the Personal Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Vitamin B12 intake was assessed through 24-h dietary recall interviews. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression models assessed the relationships between UI, vitamin B12 intake, and depression in women, with additional analyses conducted across different age, body mass index (BMI), and vaginal delivery groups. Results are presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results The study included 14,154 women, averaging 48.18±0.27 years in age, of whom 1609 (11.37%) exhibited depressive symptoms. Women with stress UI (OR=1.55, 95% CI: 1.26-1.91), urgency UI (OR=1.92, 95% CI: 1.52-2.44), and mixed UI (OR=2.60, 95% CI: 2.13-3.19) showed significantly greater odds of depression compared to those without UI. Vitamin B12 intake of ≥2.4 mcg/day was associated with lower odds of depression (OR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.080-1.14). In patients with UI, the odds of depression gradually decreased with a vitamin B12 intake of ≥2.4 mcg/day. A moderating role of vitamin B12 intake was observed among women with UI aged ≤ 64 years, with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, and those with or without vaginal deliveries. Conclusion UI is linked to elevated depression odds, while vitamin B12 intake appears to moderate this relationship. It is essential for healthcare providers to prioritize early depression assessments in women with UI and to offer timely interventions to enhance their quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have consistently documented positive associations between depressive symptoms and altitude; however, a longitudinal study of these relationships among middle-aged and older adult community populations in China has not been previously reported. METHODS We screened 17,705 subjects who met the inclusion criteria from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study database 2011. The altitude is the altitude at which the participants lived in our study area. We estimated the prospective associations between altitude and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. The 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale short form was used to measure depressive symptoms. A total of 6,594 participants without depressive symptoms were recruited from the same cohort in 2011 and were followed up in 2018. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the associations between altitude and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 27.3% in our study. The prevalence of depressive symptoms increased with increasing altitude, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms in women was greater than that in men. Multivariate logistic regression adjusted for all other relevant variables showed that sex, altitude, education level, professional status and marital status were associated with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This finding provides evidence of the relationship between altitude and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adult community populations in China and shows that depressive symptoms are significantly positively correlated with altitude and other factors, including sex, education level, professional status, and marital status.

Abstract
Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for approximately 74% of deaths globally. Medicinal plants have traditionally been used to treat NCDs, including diabetes, cancer, and rheumatic diseases, and are a source of anti-inflammatory compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of Rhus trilobata (Rt) extracts and fractions in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation models in vitro and in vivo. The aqueous extract (RtAE) and five fractions (F2 to F6) were obtained via C18 solid-phase separation and tested in murine LPS-induced J774.1 macrophages. Key inflammatory markers, such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and COX-2 gene expression were measured using RT-qPCR, and PGE2 production was assessed via HPLC-DAD. The in vivo effects were tested in an LPS-induced paw edema model in Wistar rats. Results showed that RtAE at 15 μg/mL significantly decreased IL-1β and IL-6 gene expression in vitro. Fraction F6 further reduced IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 gene expression, COX-2 expression, and PGE2 production. In vivo, F6 significantly reduced LPS-induced paw edema, inflammatory infiltration, and IL-1β and COX-2 protein expression. Chemical characterization of F6 by UPLC/MS-QTOF revealed at least eight compounds with anti-inflammatory activity. These findings support the anti-inflammatory potential of RtAE and F6, reinforcing the medicinal use of Rt.

BACKGROUND & AIMS The search for integrative and natural therapies that favor homeostasis to boost sleep and diet quality took place for young adult populations as a non-pharmacological strategy for long-term good quality of life. Thus, the present pilot study aims to investigate the effects of 90-day consumption of a nutraceutical composition on the neuro-immune-endocrine axis, providing better sleep quality and health improvement. METHODS For this, from March 2021 to June 2021, twenty-two Brazilian young adult volunteers (women and men) with BMI between 18.5 and 34.9 kg/m2 were divided into three distinct supplementation groups: NSupple; NSupple plus_S, and NSupple plus. Briefly, the supplement compositions included yeast β-glucan, prebiotics, and minerals in different concentrations associated or not with the herbal medicine silymarin. Neither nutritional nor physical activity interventions were performed during this pilot study period. The anthropometrics measures, questionnaires answer data, and harvest blood for metabolic, inflammatory, and hormonal tests were collected at baseline time (day zero-T0) and day 90 (T90) post-supplementation. RESULTS Our results highlight that the supplementation reduced body mass index (BMI), Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference, AST/ALT ratio, alkaline phosphatase, and HbA1c. Post-supplementation the IL-6 and IL-10 levels and the sleep, humor, and quality of life scores were suggested to improve. Sleep quality improvement seems to predict the reduction of adiposity-related body measures. CONCLUSION In sum, the nutraceutical supplementation might be related to anthropometric, metabolic, and endocrine parameters after 90 days reflecting on perception of humor, sleep, and life quality enhancement. However, it is important to recognize the limitation of the data presented considering that this was a pilot study. Abstract
Mental health problems in nurses are prevalent and impairing. To date, no literature has comprehensively synthesised cohort evidence on mental health among nurses. This scoping review aimed to synthesise the existing literature on the risk factors and consequences of mental health problems in nurses. A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, Epistemonikos database, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO from inception to March 2023. We identified 171 cohort studies from 16 countries, mostly (95.3%) from high-income economies. This review indicated that nurses worldwide encountered significant mental health challenges, including depression, cognitive impairment, anxiety, trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder, burnout, sleep disorder, and other negative mental health problems. These problems were closely related to various modifiable risk factors such as nurses' behaviours and lifestyles, social support, workplace bullying and violence, shift work, job demands, and job resources. Moreover, nurses' mental health problems have negative effects on their physical health, behaviour and lifestyle, occupation and organisation, and intrapersonal factors. These findings provided an enhanced understanding of mental health complexities among nurses, and shed light on policy enactment to alleviate the negative impact of mental health problems on nurses. Addressing mental health among nurses should be a top priority.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic evaluation of exercise interventions' effectiveness on antenatal depressive symptoms in pregnant women and to investigate the impact of different intervention factors on the relationship between exercise and antenatal depressive symptoms. Methods We conducted comprehensive searches in several databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and others. The search period covered from database inception to May 2023. After thorough screening, a total of 7 papers with 524 subjects were included in the analysis. Results The meta-analysis revealed that the overall effect size of exercise intervention on antenatal depressive symptoms in pregnant women was SMD = -0.41, with a 95% confidence interval of [-0.78, -0.05], and P = 0.03, indicating a significant improvement in depressive symptoms due to exercise intervention during the antenatal period. However, some degree of heterogeneity was observed among the studies, with I² = 74%, P = 0.0007. Conclusion The results indicate that exercise interventions significantly contribute to the improvement of antenatal depressive symptoms in pregnant women, as inferred from the combined findings of the studies. Notably, static exercise intervention showed better results than dynamic exercise intervention. Moreover, interventions conducted before 20 weeks' gestation had superior outcomes compared to those conducted after 20 weeks' gestation, and interventions lasting longer than the trimester duration exhibited more favorable effects than shorter interventions. However, to validate these findings and optimise exercise intervention protocols for better antenatal maternal depressive symptom management, larger sample sizes and more comprehensive studies are required, given the observed heterogeneity and potential limitations in the present study. Abstract
Background In this study, we aim to examine the impact of dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) on sleep problems and depressive symptoms (DS); besides, we seek to elucidate the potential mediating effect of dietary TAC on the relationships between sleep problems and DS. Methods Weighted Kruskal-Wallis tests for continuous variables and Chi-square tests for categorical variables were employed to discriminate between DS and non-DS participants. Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analysis were applied to evaluate the associations of TAC with DS and sleep problems. Results Among the 21,805 participants, 1,947 participants suffered from DS. Weighted multivariable logistical regression indicated that shorter sleep hours were linked to an increased likelihood of risk of DS even after complete adjustments. Restricted cubic spline cure displayed that TAC was almost non-linearly correlated with DS and sleep problems. Mediation analysis indicated that sleep duration slightly mediated the association between TAC and DS (proportion of mediation: 3.12%, p < 0.001). Conclusion This study illustrated the inverse association between TAC value and sleep problems and DS. Furthermore, TAC slightly mediated the effect of sleep duration on the DS, and there was a nearly non-linear relationship between TAC and DS, and TAC and sleep problems.

Abstract
Depression is a global health concern, with various treatments available. In this study, participants (n = 430) were self-selected or medically referred to a residential lifestyle program at the Black Hills Health & Education Center (BHHEC), with a mean stay of 19 days. Individualized treatment plans included structured physical activity sessions, counseling sessions, and the provision of a vegan diet. Beck Depression Inventory-II, self-reported total exercise minutes, resistance exercise minutes, and sleep, along with the number of holistic treatments and counseling sessions, were evaluated. Paired samples t-tests indicated a significant decrease in depression scores over time (MT1 = 20.14, MT2 = 6.17, P < .001). Results from the multiple linear regression that evaluated total exercise minutes, resistance exercise, number of treatments and counseling sessions, and average reported hours of nightly sleep on depression scores at time 2 indicated that average reported hours of nightly sleep were the only significant predictor of depression scores at time 2 (P < .05). While depression scores significantly improved from baseline to post-assessment for all participants, it is possible that an unmeasured variable, or the synergistic intervention effect of the wellness program, accounted for changes in depressive symptoms over time. Future studies should incorporate sleep quality and assessing time spent in nature to explore these relationships further.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is characterized by persistent symptoms such as fatigue, loss of interest in activities, feelings of sadness and worthlessness. MDD often coexist with cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet the precise link between these conditions remains unclear. This review explores factors underlying the development of MDD and CVD, including genetic, epigenetic, platelet activation, inflammation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation, endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption. RECENT FINDINGS Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the membrane-associated guanylate kinase WW and PDZ domain-containing protein 1 (MAGI-1) are associated with neuroticism and psychiatric disorders including MDD. SNPs in MAGI-1 are also linked to chronic inflammatory disorders such as spontaneous glomerulosclerosis, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. Increased MAGI-1 expression has been observed in colonic epithelial samples from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients. MAGI-1 also plays a role in regulating EC activation and atherogenesis in mice and is essential for Influenza A virus (IAV) infection, endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced EC apoptosis, and thrombin-induced EC permeability. Despite being understudied in human disease; evidence suggests that MAGI-1 may play a role in linking CVD and MDD. Therefore, further investigation of MAG-1 could be warranted to elucidate its potential involvement in these conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this review, we aim to summarize recent information about the association of B vitamins with immune-metabolic aspects of depression and their connection with the gut-brain axis. VIEWS B vitamins may alter depressive symptoms by many various mechanisms such as reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, gut permeability, controlling epigenetics, modifying the microbiome, and stimulating it to produce many beneficial substances such as short-chain fatty acids or neurotransmitters: norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and acetylcholine. CONCLUSIONS Specifically, vitamins B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folate), and B12 (cyanocobalamin), B2 (riboflavin) have been observed to affect depression. Given probiotic's capability to produce vitamins from the B group, and modify intestinal function, inflammation, or metabolic dysfunction, their supplementation might be a possible treatment method for the immunometabolic form of depression. Thus, the intake of certain probiotic bacterial strains simultaneously with controlling the required daily intake of B vitamins may positively affect the course of depression. Circulating B vitamins metabolite levels, especially B9, B12, and B6 may also be biomarkers of depression. Further investigation is needed to find stronger evidence on this topic.

Abstract
PURPOSE Depression is prevalent in patients undergoing bariatric surgery (BSx). Long-term use of antidepressant is associated with weight gain, particularly the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Little is known about whether different types of antidepressants affect the response to BSx. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between SSRI use and nutritional and biochemical measurements in those with obesity pre-/post-BSx. METHODS This is a cross-sectional and prospective cohort study. Patients were enrolled pre-BSx and divided into 3 groups: SSRI, non-SSRI and no antidepressant. Nutritional, biochemical and pharmacological data were collected pre- and 6 months post-BSx. RESULTS Pre-BSx, 77 patients were enrolled: 89.6% female, median age 45 years and body mass index (BMI) of 45.3 kg/m2. 14.3% were taking SSRIs and had a significantly higher BMI (52.1 kg/m2) compared to 62.3% in no antidepressant (46.0 kg/m2) and 23.4% in non-SSRI antidepressants (43.1 kg/m2). At 6 months post-BSx (n = 58), the SSRI group still had significantly higher BMI in comparison to the other two groups. No other significant differences found between groups. CONCLUSION Despite higher BMI, patients taking SSRI and undergoing BSx had similar responses, based on nutritional and biochemical parameters, to those on non-SSRI or no antidepressants. Abstract
Depression is a major global health concern expected to worsen by 2030. In 2019, 28 million individuals were affected by depressive disorders. Dietary and supplemental vitamins show overall favorable preventative and therapeutic effects on depression. B vitamins are crucial for neurological function and mood regulation. Deficiencies in these vitamins are linked to depression. Studies on individual B vitamins show promise in improving depressive symptoms, particularly thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate. Vitamin C deficiency may heighten depressive symptoms, but its exact role is not fully understood. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is associated with insufficient sunlight exposure and vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D supplementation for SAD shows inconsistent results due to methodological variations. Further investigation is needed to understand the mechanisms of vitamins in depression treatment. Moreover, more research on SAD and light therapy's efficacy and underlying mechanisms involving photoreceptors, enzymes, and immune markers is needed. Although dietary and supplemental vitamins show overall favorable preventative and therapeutic effects on depression, dietitians treating psychiatric disorders face challenges due to diverse study designs, making direct comparisons difficult. Therefore, this article reviews the current literature to assess the role of dietary and supplemental vitamins in the prevention and treatment of depression. This review found that, although evidence supports the role of B vitamins and vitamins C and D in preventing and treating depression, further research is needed to clarify their mechanisms of action and determine the most effective intervention strategies.

Abstract
The acceleration of aging is a risk factor for numerous diseases, and diet has been identified as an especially effective anti-aging method. Currently, research on the relationship between dietary nutrient intake and accelerated aging remains limited, with existing studies focusing on the intake of a small number of individual dietary nutrients. Comprehensive research on the single and mixed anti-aging effects of dietary nutrients has not been conducted. This study aimed to comprehensively explore the effects of numerous dietary nutrient intakes, both singly and in combination, on the acceleration of aging. Data for this study were extracted from the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The acceleration of aging was measured by phenotypic age acceleration. Linear regression (linear), restricted cubic spline (RCS) (nonlinear), and weighted quantile sum (WQS) (mixed effect) models were used to explore the association between dietary nutrient intake and accelerated aging. A total of 4692 participants aged ≥ 20 were included in this study. In fully adjusted models, intakes of 16 nutrients were negatively associated with accelerated aging (protein, vitamin E, vitamin A, beta-carotene, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin K, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium, dietary fiber, and alcohol). Intakes of total sugars, vitamin C, vitamin K, caffeine, and alcohol showed significant nonlinear associations with accelerated aging. Additionally, mixed dietary nutrient intakes were negatively associated with accelerated aging. Single dietary nutrients as well as mixed nutrient intake may mitigate accelerated aging. Moderately increasing the intake of specific dietary nutrients and maintaining dietary balance may be key strategies to prevent accelerated aging.

Abstract
Depression, a prevalent and complex mental health condition, presents a significant global health burden. Depression is one of the most frequent mental disorders; deaths from it account for 14.3% of people worldwide. In recent years, the integration of complementary and alternative medicine, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has gained attention as a potential avenue for addressing depression. This comprehensive review critically assesses the efficacy of TCM interventions in alleviating depressive symptoms. An in-depth look at different research studies, clinical trials, and meta-analyses is used in this review to look into how TCM practices like herbal formulations, acupuncture, and mind-body practices work. The review looks at the quality of the evidence, the rigor of the methods, and any possible flaws in the current studies. This gives us an idea of where TCM stands right now in terms of treating depression. This comprehensive review aims to assess the efficacy of TCM interventions in alleviating depressive symptoms. In order to learn more about their possible healing effects, the study also looks into how different types of TCM work, such as herbal formulas, acupuncture, and mind-body practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The epidemic of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) poses a great challenge to depression. However, the prevalence of depression among ACS patients has not been fully determined. This meta-analysis aimed to provide an estimation of the global prevalence of depression among ACS patients (ACS depression). METHODS Online databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for all relevant studies that reported the prevalence of ACS depression through March 2023. Pooled prevalence of ACS depression with 95% confidence interval (CI) was estimated by the random-effect model. All statistical analyses were performed using comprehensive meta-analysis software. This review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (identifier CRD42023409338). RESULTS A total of 28 studies (17 cohort studies, 9 cross-sectional studies, and 2 case-control studies) were included. The overall pooled prevalence of depression in ACS, derived from 28 studies, was 28.5% (95% CI: 0.28-0.29, P = .000, I2 = 99%). 21 included studies showed a prevalence of 20.3% (95% CI: 0.20-0.21, P = .000, I2 = 96%) in men, and the prevalence in women was 13.6% (95% CI: 0.13-0.14, P = .000, I2 = 95%). Subgroup analysis showed the lowest prevalence in Europe (20.7%, 95% CI: 0.20-0.22, P = .000, I2 = 98%); On different diagnostic criteria, the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV) (36.8%, 95% CI: 0.35-0.38, P = .000, I2 = 96%) has the highest prevalence. In terms of end year of data collection, the prevalence of ACS depression was lower for studies that ended data collection after 2012 (25.7%, 95% CI: 0.25-0.27, P = .000, I2 = 99%) than in studies before 2012 (30%, 95% CI: 0.29-0.31, P = .000, I2 = 98%). CONCLUSION SUBSECTIONS This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest high global prevalence of depression among ACS patients, underlining the necessity of more preventive interventions among ACS patients especially in Asian and North American regions.

Abstract
Obesity and depression are interdependent pathological disorders with strong inflammatory effects commonly found worldwide. They determine the health status of the population and cause key problems in terms of morbidity and mortality. The role of gut microbiota and its composition in the treatment of obesity and psychological factors is increasingly emphasized. Published research suggests that prebiotic, probiotic, or symbiotic preparations can effectively intervene in obesity treatment and mood-dysregulation alleviation. Thus, this literature review aims to highlight the role of intestinal microbiota in treating depression and obesity. An additional purpose is to indicate probiotics, including psychobiotics and prebiotics, potentially beneficial in supporting the treatment of these two diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A proper nutrition is essential for human life. Recently, special attention on this topic has been given in relation to three health statuses: obesity, malnutrition and specific diseases that can be related to food or treated with specific diets. Mobile technology is often used to assist users that wish to regulate their eating habits, and identifying which fields of application have been explored the most by the app developers and which main functionalities have been adopted can be useful in view of future app developments. METHODS We selected 322 articles mentioning nutrition support apps through a literature database search, all of which have undergone an initial screening. After the exclusion of papers that were already reviews, not presenting apps or not focused on nutrition, not relevant or not developed for human subjects, 100 papers were selected for subsequent analyses that aimed at identifying the main treated conditions, outcome measures and functionalities implemented in the Apps. RESULTS Of the selected studies, 33 focus on specific diseases, 24 on obesity, 2 on malnutrition and 41 on other targets (e.g., weight/diet control). Type 2 diabetes is the most targeted disease, followed by gestational diabetes, hypertension, colorectal cancer and CVDs which all were targeted by more than one app. Most Apps include self-monitoring and coaching functionalities, educational content and artificial intelligence (AI) tools are slightly less common, whereas counseling, gamification and questionnaires are the least implemented. Body weight and calories/nutrients were the most common general outcome measures, while glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was the most common clinical outcome. No statistically significant differences in the effectiveness of the different functionalities were found. CONCLUSION The use of mobile technology to improve nutrition has been widely explored in the last years, especially for weight control and specific diseases like diabetes; however, other food-related conditions such as Irritable Bowel Diseases appear to be less targeted by newly developed smartphone apps and their related studies. All different kinds of functionalities appear to be equally effective, but further specific studies are needed to confirm the results.

Abstract
High-fat diets (HFDs) have pervaded modern dietary habits, characterized by their excessive saturated fat content and low nutritional value. Epidemiological studies have compellingly linked HFD consumption to obesity and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, the synergistic interplay of HFD, obesity, and diabetes expedites the aging process and prematurely fosters age-related diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms driving these associations remain enigmatic. One of the most conspicuous hallmarks of aging is the accumulation of highly inflammatory senescent cells, with mounting evidence implicating increased cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of age-related diseases. Our hypothesis posits that HFD consumption amplifies senescence burden across multiple organs. To scrutinize this hypothesis, we subjected mice to a 6-month HFD regimen, assessing senescence biomarker expression in the liver, white adipose tissue, and the brain. Aging is intrinsically linked to impaired cellular stress resilience, driven by dysfunction in Nrf2-mediated cytoprotective pathways that safeguard cells against oxidative stress-induced senescence. To ascertain whether Nrf2-mediated pathways shield against senescence induction in response to HFD consumption, we explored senescence burden in a novel model of aging: Nrf2-deficient (Nrf2+/-) mice, emulating the aging phenotype. Our initial findings unveiled significant Nrf2 dysfunction in Nrf2+/- mice, mirroring aging-related alterations. HFD led to substantial obesity, hyperglycemia, and impaired insulin sensitivity in both Nrf2+/- and Nrf2+/+ mice. In control mice, HFD primarily heightened senescence burden in white adipose tissue, evidenced by increased Cdkn2a senescence biomarker expression. In Nrf2+/- mice, HFD elicited a significant surge in senescence burden across the liver, white adipose tissue, and the brain. We postulate that HFD-induced augmentation of senescence burden may be a pivotal contributor to accelerated organismal aging and the premature onset of age-related diseases.

Abstract
With the improvement of living quality, people pay more and more attention to vitamin supplements. The vitamins in the daily diet can meet the needs of the body. Whether additional vitamin supplementation is necessary still needs to be further explored. Many studies have reported that vitamin deficiency and excessive vitamin supplementation could lead to abnormal development in the body or increase the risk of diseases. Here, we summarize the abnormal levels of vitamins can cause the homeostasis imbalance of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis by affecting its development and function. It can lead to abnormal synthesis and secretion of glucocorticoid in the body, which mediates the occurrence and development of metabolic diseases and psychoneurotic diseases. In addition, vitamin has a strong antioxidant effect, which can eliminate oxygen free radicals. Thereby, vitamins can alter HPA axis function and homeostasis maintenance by combating oxidative stress. This review provides a theoretical basis for clarifying the role of abnormal levels of vitamin in the occurrence and development of multiple diseases and its intervention strategy, and also provides reference value and guiding significance for rational use of vitamins.

Abstract
Several risk factors, including nutritional/lifestyle ones, play a role in gastric cancer etiology. Further interactions with mental health have also been emphasized. We hypothesized that individuals with mental disorders would exhibit compromised nutrient intake, increasing their risk of gastric cancer. The state of mental health was evaluated in 82 patients with gastric cancer and 95 healthy controls using the 21-item Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale. The participants' dietary intakes were evaluated by a 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Based on fully adjusted logistic regressions, there was a significant association between depression (OR = 1.938, CI 95%: 1.009-3.723) and stress (OR = 2.630, CI 95%: 1.014-6.819) with increased odds of gastric cancer. According to fully adjusted multinomial regressions, vitamins A and B6, beta-carotene, and black tea decreased the odds of depression, based on comparing the control group with cases of depression, while sugar and salt increased its odds. The highest significant association was found for salt intake and anxiety in cases with present anxiety (OR = 4.899, 95% CI: 2.218-10.819), and the highest significant protective effect was found for vitamin B6 and depression in cases with present depression (OR = 0.132, 95% CI: 0.055-0.320). However, considering causal relationships and clarifying the underlying mechanisms is imperative and requires further investigation. Advising healthy dietary patterns, e.g., a Mediterranean diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals such as vitamin A, B6, beta-carotene, and fiber, is expected to reduce the odds of gastric cancer, possibly related to lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Abstract
Recent studies have reported positive effects of Intermittent Fasting (IF) on metabolic parameters, cognition, and mood. However, regarding depressive symptoms, the effect of IF is not clear. The purpose of this review was to assess the available evidence on IF interventions for depression in both clinical and preclinical studies. Of the 23 included studies, 15 were performed on humans and 8 on animal models. The studies on rodents suggested that IF acts as a circadian regulator, improving neurotransmitter availability and increasing the levels of neurotrophic factors in the brain. However, the investigations on humans mainly evaluated healthy volunteers and showed a great heterogeneity regarding both the IF regimen studied and the observed effects on mood. Most available clinical trials have specific limitations, such as small sample sizes and uncontrolled designs. A comprehensive systematic review was conducted on five databases, PubMed, Cochrane, the Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science databases, BVS and Scopus, identifying 23 relevant studies up to 6 October 2022. IF has potentially relevant physiological effects for the treatment of mood disorders, but better designed studies and controlled evaluations are needed to evaluate its efficiency in the treatment of major depression.

Abstract
The multifactorial etiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) includes biological, environmental, genetic, and psychological aspects. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in metallomic studies in psychiatry, aiming to evaluate the role of chosen trace elements in the MDD etiology as well as the progression of symptoms. This narrative review aims to summarize the available literature on the relationship between the concentration of chosen elements in the serum of patients with MDD and the onset and progression of this psychiatric condition. The authors reviewed PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases searching for elements that had been investigated so far and further evaluated them in this paper. Ultimately, 15 elements were evaluated, namely, zinc, magnesium, selenium, iron, copper, aluminium, cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, calcium, manganese, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. The association between metallomic studies and psychiatry has been developing dynamically recently. According to the results of current research, metallomics might act as a potential screening tool for patients with MDD while at the same time providing an assessment of the severity of symptoms. Either deficiencies or excessive amounts of chosen elements might be associated with the progression of depressive symptoms or even the onset of the disease among people predisposed to MDD.

Abstract
The interplay between the central nervous system and the intestinal environment hinges on neural, hormonal, immune, and metabolic reactions. Over decades, significant effort has gone into exploring the link between the digestive system and the brain. The primary objective of this study is to assess catecholamine levels in children with neuropsychiatric disorders. We aim to examine how these levels impact the mental and physical wellbeing of these children, with a specific focus on psychoemotional symptoms and cognitive performance. Our research seeks to identify the significance of modifying neurotransmitter levels in pediatric medical interventions, ultimately striving to reduce mental health risks and enhance children's future development. A total of 135 individuals were chosen to partake, and they engaged in regular monthly consultations according to established study protocols. Clinical evaluations were conducted in a medical environment, encompassing the observation of constipation, diarrhea, and additional gastrointestinal anomalies not confined to constipation or diarrhea. This entailed the assessment of neurotransmitter imbalances, with a specific focus on dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and the noradrenaline/adrenaline ratio. Gastrointestinal disorders are indicative of imbalances in catecholamines, with lower gastrointestinal problems being correlated with such imbalances. In subjects with psychiatric disorders, a more pronounced dopamine and noradrenaline/adrenaline ratio was observed, while elevated adrenaline levels were associated with psychoanxiety disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary acid load seems to be associated with psychological disorders through several mechanisms, and may barricade their treatment and recovery. The aim of current study was to evaluate the relationship between dietary acid load, using potential renal acid load (PRAL) and dietary acid load (DAL) scores, with the severity of depression and anxiety among Iranian adults. METHODS A total of 6531 participants aged 35-65 years were recruited in this cross-sectional study. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess dietary intakes of participants. DAL was estimated using PRAL and DAL scores. Depression and anxiety were screened using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). RESULTS In the fully adjusted model, women with the highest DAL or PRAL had higher odds of more severe depression compared to those in the lowest category (OR = 1.20; 95% CI = 1.03-1.42 and OR = 1.20; 95% CI = 1.03-1.39, respectively). No significant association was observed between DAL and PRAL and depression severity in men and in the population as a whole. Regarding the association between PRAL and anxiety severity, there was no significant association when separated by sex. However, in the fully adjusted model for the whole population, participants in the highest tertile of PRAL had 13% greater odds of more severe anxiety than the lowest tertile (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.01-1.13). No significant association was observed between DAL and anxiety severity in women, men or in the whole population. CONCLUSION Women, but not men, with higher dietary acid load had significantly higher odds of having more severe depression. A significant positive association was also observed between dietary acid load and anxiety in the whole population.

Abstract
Postpartum depression, with a prevalence ranging between 14% and 25% worldwide, has been considered an urgent health concern that negatively affects both mothers' and their infants' health. Postpartum depression may negatively affect maternal sociodemographic and anthropometric parameters and lifestyle factors. Nutrition has recently been identified as a crucial factor for the management and co-treatment of postpartum depression. This survey aims to determine the possible association of postpartum depression with mothers' socio-demographic and anthropometric characteristics, perinatal outcomes, breastfeeding practices, and Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence. METHODS This is a cross-sectional survey, which was performed on 3941 women during the postpartum period. Postpartum depression was assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Anthropometric parameters and perinatal outcomes were retrieved from mothers' medical records. Sociodemographic data and breastfeeding practices were recorded by face-to-face interviews between enrolled mothers and trained personnel. Mediterranean diet adherence was assessed by MedDietScore. Both univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression were applied for analyzing our data. RESULTS Postpartum depression was significantly associated with lower educational level, Greek nationality, higher prevalence of multiparity and overweight/obesity postpartum, higher incidence of caesarean section and not breastfeeding, and lower levels of MD adherence. In multivariate analysis, postpartum depression was independently associated with mothers' educational level, postpartum BMI status, type of delivery, breastfeeding practices, and MD adherence after adjusting for multiple confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS This study has provided evidence that elevated MD compliance was related to a decreased risk of postpartum depression. Additionally, postpartum depression was associated with multiple sociodemographic and anthropometric parameters, perinatal outcomes, and breastfeeding practices. Future well-designed, prospective studies with high-quality methodology should be performed to obtain conclusive results.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are the leading causes of global disability. Approximately 50% of patients fail to attain remission, prompting a pronounced focus on the significance of dietary patterns and specific nutrients within the pathophysiology of mood disorders. The connection between chronic diseases and mood disorders follows a bidirectional pattern: physical ailments are interrelated with affective disorders, and, concurrently, mood symptoms often precede chronic diseases and have the potential to worsen their prognosis. Nutraceuticals affect factors that could potentially impact the onset of mood disorders: monoamines and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and sleep quality. Furthermore, mood disorders rarely manifest in isolation. Typically, such patients concurrently experience other mental disorders or somatic comorbidities: obesity, hypertension, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), etc., where providing nutritional support is also pertinent. To optimize the therapeutic approach for individuals with mood disorders, incorporating nutritional support may not solely ameliorate symptoms stemming directly from the mental condition, but also indirectly through interventions targeting comorbidities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the relationship between systemic oxidative stress status and depression. The oxidative balance score (OBS) was used to assess systemic oxidative stress status, with higher OBS scores implying exposure to more antioxidants. This study aimed to explore whether OBS is associated with depression. METHODS 18,761 subjects from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018 were selected. Depression was diagnosed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, score ≥ 10). OBS was scored by 20 dietary and lifestyle factors. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to assess the association between OBS and depression. RESULTS The prevalence of depression was 8.42 %. There was a significant negative nonlinear relationship between OBS, dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS and depression (p for nonlinear < 0.05). Compared to the lowest quartile of OBS, the adjusted ORs for the highest quartile of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS and depression were 0.290 (95 % CI: 0.193-0.434), 0.500(95 % CI: 0.380-0.658), 0.403(95 % CI: 0.299-0.545) respectively, and all P for trend < 0.001. In stratified analyses, three OBS were negatively associated with the odds of depression across sex groups (all P for trend < 0.05), and the OR was smaller in the female group than in the male group. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional data and absence of drug considerations. CONCLUSIONS OBS was strongly negatively associated with depression, especially in females. The findings underline the significance of adhering to an antioxidant diet and lifestyle, which helps prevent depression and appears to be of greater benefit to women.

Abstract
Depression is classified as one of the most common mental disorders. Its prevalence has recently increased, becoming a growing public health threat. This review focuses on clarifying the role and importance of individual nutrients in the diet and the impact of nutrient deficiencies on the risk of depression. Deficiencies in nutrients such as protein, B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, selenium, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids have a significant impact on brain and nervous system function, which can affect the appearance of depressive symptoms. However, it is important to remember that diet in itself is not the only factor influencing the risk of or helping to treat depression. There are many other aspects, such as physical activity, sleep, stress management, and social support, that also play an important role in maintaining mental health. The data review observed that most of the available analyses are based on cross-sectional studies. Further studies, including prospective cohort, case-control studies, are recommended to draw more reliable conclusions.

Abstract
Depression is a highly prevalent emotional disorder characterized by persistent low mood, diminished interest, and loss of pleasure. The pathological causes of depression are associated with neuronal atrophy, synaptic loss, and neurotransmitter activity decline in the central nervous system (CNS) resulting from injuries, such as inflammatory responses. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, patients with depression often exhibit the liver qi stagnation syndrome type. Sini Powder (SNP) is a classic prescription for treating such depression-related syndrome types in China. This study systematically summarized clinical applications and experimental studies of SNP for treatments of depression. We scrutinized the active components of SNP with blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and speculated about the corresponding pharmacodynamic pathways relevant to depression treatment through intervening in the CNS. Therefore, this article can enhance our understanding of SNP's pharmacological mechanisms and formula construction for depression treatment. Moreover, a re-demonstration of this classic TCM prescription in the modern-science language is of great significance for future drug development and research.
