Robust chelated lead octahedron surface for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

PbI6 octahedron as a fundamental framework endows the perovskite with excellent photoelectric properties, but also the defective and flimsy surface. Here, we report that the treatment of perovskite surface by bidentate ligands molecules N, N'-Dimethyl-1,2-ethanediamine can in-situ form a lead iodide chelates layer with excellently robust chelated lead octahedron, leading to effectively stabilize and passivate the underlying perovskite. The strong chelation with the lead enables the surface to largely inhibit the defects generation, iodide ion migration and skeleton collapse under external stimuli. It also prolongs the carrier lifetime and adjusts the surface energy-level of perovskite. The resultant perovskite solar cells deliver a power conversion efficiency of 25.7% (certified 25.04%) and retain >90% of their initial value after almost 1000 hours aging at maximum power point under simulated AM1.5 illumination.

Water- and heat-activated dynamic passivation for perovskite photovoltaics

Further improvements in perovskite solar cells require better control of ionic defects in the perovskite photoactive layer during the manufacturing stage and their usage1-5. Here we report a living passivation strategy using a hindered urea/thiocarbamate bond6-8 Lewis acid-base material (HUBLA), where dynamic covalent bonds with water and heat-activated characteristics can dynamically heal the perovskite to ensure device performance and stability. Upon exposure to moisture or heat, HUBLA generates new agents and further passivates defects in the perovskite. This passivation strategy achieved high-performance devices with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.1 per cent. HUBLA devices retained 94 per cent of their initial PCE for approximately 1,500 hours of ageing at 85 degrees Celsius in nitrogen and maintained 88 per cent of their initial PCE after 1,000 hours of ageing at 85 degrees Celsius and 30 per cent relative humidity in air.

Light-induced Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction in neodymium(II) doped hybrid perovskite

Tuning the properties of a pair of entangled electron and hole in a light-induced exciton is a fundamentally intriguing inquiry for quantum science. Here, using semiconducting hybrid perovskite as an exploratory platform, we discover that Nd2+-doped CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) perovskite exhibits a Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction under cryogenic and photoexcitation conditions. The feedback to such interaction between excitons in perovskite and the localized spins in Nd2+ is observed as notably prolonged carrier lifetimes measured by time-resolved photoluminescence, ~10 times to that of pristine MAPbI3 without Nd2+ dopant. From a mechanistic standpoint, such extended charge separation states are the consequence of the trap state enabled by the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the light-induced exciton and the localized 4 f spins of the Nd2+ in the proximity. Importantly, this Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction can be modulated by either increasing Nd2+ doping concentration that enhances the coupling between the exciton and Nd2+ 4 f spins as evidenced by elongated carrier lifetime, or by using an external magnetic field that can nullify the spin-dependent exchange interaction therein due to the unified orientations of Nd2+ spin angular momentum, thereby leading to exciton recombination at the dynamics comparable to pristine MAPbI3.

Fusing Science with Industry: Perovskite Photovoltaics Moving Rapidly into Industrialization

The organic-inorganic lead halide per materials have emerged as highly promising contenders in the field of photovoltaic technology, offering exceptional efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The commercialization of perovskite photovoltaics hinges on successfully transitioning from lab-scale perovskite solar cells to large-scale perovskite solar modules (PSMs). However, the efficiency of PSMs significantly diminishes with increasing device area, impeding commercial viability. Central to achieving high-efficiency PSMs is fabricating uniform functional films and optimizing interfaces to minimize energy loss. This review sheds light on the path toward large-scale PSMs, emphasizing the pivotal role of integrating cutting-edge scientific research with industrial technology. By exploring scalable deposition techniques and optimization strategies, the advancements and challenges in fabricating large-area perovskite films are revealed. Subsequently, the architecture and contact materials of PSMs are delved while addressing pertinent interface issues. Crucially, efficiency loss during scale-up and stability risks encountered by PSMs is analyzed. Furthermore, the advancements in industrial efforts toward perovskite commercialization are highlighted, emphasizing the perspective of PSMs in revolutionizing renewable energy. By highlighting the scientific and technical challenges in developing PSMs, the importance of combining science and industry to drive their industrialization and pave the way for future advancements is stressed.

Defect Passivation and Crystallization Regulation for Efficient and Stable Formamidinium Lead Iodide Solar Cells with Multifunctional Amidino Additive

Amidino-based additives show great potential in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the role of different functional groups in amidino-based additives have not been well elucidated. Herein, two multifunctional amidino additives 4-amidinobenzoic acid hydrochloride (ABAc) and 4-amidinobenzamide hydrochloride (ABAm) are employed to improve the film quality of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskites. Compared with ABAc, the amide group imparts ABAm with larger dipole moment and thus stronger interactions with the perovskite components, i.e., the hydrogen bonds between N…H and I- anion and coordination bonds between C = O and Pb2+ cation. It strengthens the passivation effect of iodine vacancy defect and slows down the crystallization process of α-FAPbI3, resulting in the significantly reduced non-radiative recombination, long carrier lifetime of 1.7 µs, uniformly large crystalline grains, and enhances hydrophobicity. Profiting from the improved film quality, the ABAm-treated PSC achieves a high efficiency of 24.60%, and maintains 93% of the initial efficiency after storage in ambient environment for 1200 hours. This work provides new insights for rational design of multifunctional additives regarding of defect passivation and crystallization control toward highly efficient and stable PSCs.

All-Round Passivation Strategy Yield Flexible Perovskite/CuInGaSe2 Tandem Solar Cells with Efficiency Exceeding 26.5

The perovskite/Cu(InGa)Se2 (CIGS) tandem solar cells (TSCs) presents a compelling technological combination poised for the next generation of flexible and lightweight photovoltaic (PV) tandem devices, featuring a tunable bandgap, high power conversion efficiency (PCE), lightweight flexibility, and enhanced stability and durability. Over the years, the imperative to enhance the performance of wide bandgap (WBG) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has grown significantly, particularly in the context of a flexible tandem device. In this study, an all-round passivation strategy known as Dual Passivation at Grains and Interfaces (DPGI) is introduced for WBG PSCs in perovskite/CIGS tandem structures. The implementation of DPGI is tailored to improve film crystallinity and passivate defects across the solar cell structure, leading to a substantial performance enhancement for WBG PSCs. Subsequently, both rigid and flexible tandem devices are assembled. Impressively, a fully flexible 4T perovskite/CIGS TSCs is successfully fabricated with a PCE of 26.57%, making it the highest value in this field and highlighting its potential applications in the next generation of flexible lightweight PV tandem devices.

Reductive Sn2+ Compensator for Efficient and Stable Sn-Pb Mixed Perovskite Solar Cells

Tin-lead (Sn-Pb) mixed perovskite with a narrow bandgap is an ideal candidate for single-junction solar cells approaching the Shockley-Queisser limit. However, due to the easy oxidation of Sn2+, the efficiency and stability of Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still lag far behind that of Pb-based solar cells. Herein, highly efficient and stable FA0.5MA0.5Pb0.5Sn0.5I0.47Br0.03 compositional PSCs are achieved by introducing an appropriate amount of multifunctional Tin (II) oxalate (SnC2O4). SnC2O4 with compensative Sn2+ and reductive oxalate group C2O4 2- effectively passivates the cation and anion defects simultaneously, thereby leading to more n-type perovskite films. Benefitting from the energy level alignment and the suppression of bulk nonradiative recombination, the Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cell treated with SnC2O4 achieves a power conversion efficiency of 21.43%. More importantly, chemically reductive C2O4 2- effectively suppresses the notorious oxidation of Sn2+, leading to significant enhancement in stability. Particularly, it dramatically improves light stability.

Cs2MnCl4:Eu2+: A Near-Violet Light-Triggered Single-Component White Light Emitter

Single-component white-light luminescent materials are considered an economical and facile choice for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). Here, a new single-component white-light-emitting material Cs2MnCl4:Eu2+ based on the combination of a lead-free halide structure and a rare-earth ion is first reported. Benefiting from the smart dilution-sensitization design strategy, white light composed of dual broad emission originating from Eu2+ (blue light, 444 nm, 4f65d1 → 4f7) and Mn2+ (yellow light, 566 nm, 4T1g → 6A1g) was successfully realized under near-ultraviolet light (404 nm) radiation with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 66%. Based on the single-source Cs2MnCl4:Eu2+ phosphor, a pc-WLEDs device with "eye-friendly" white light production was successfully fabricated. The pc-WLEDs exhibit suitable color coordinates of (0.3294, 0.2746) and a high color rendering index of 82.3, demonstrating the potential in the future health-conscious illumination application by reducing the risk of eye strain and high-energy blue-light damage. This work achieves a new single-component white-light-emitting Mn-based halide phosphor and provides a new path for the design of single-component white light sources in Mn-based halides.

Eliminating Voids and Residual PbI2 beneath a Perovskite Film via Buried Interface Modification for Efficient Solar Cells

The commercialization process of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is markedly restricted by the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability. During fabrication and operation, the bottom interface of the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite layer frequently exhibits voids and residual PbI2, while these defects inevitably act as recombination centers and degradation sites, affecting the efficiency and stability of the devices. Therefore, the degradation and nonradiative recombination originating from the buried interface should be thoroughly resolved. Here, we report a multifunctional passivator by introducing malonic dihydrazide as an interfacial chemical bridge between the electron transport layer and the perovskite (PVK) layer. MADH with hydrazine groups improves the surface affinity of SnO2 and provides nucleation sites for the growth of PVK, leading to the reduced residual PbI2 and the voids resulting from the inhomogeneous solvent volatilization at the bottom interface. Meanwhile, the hydrazine group and carbonyl group synergistically coordinate with Pb2+ to improve the crystal growth environment, reducing the number of Pb-related defects. Eventually, the PCE of the PSCs is significantly enhanced benefiting from the reduced interfacial defects and the increased carrier transport. Moreover, the reductive nature of hydrazide further inhibits I2 generation during long-term operation, and the device retains 90% of the initial PCE under a 1 sun continuous illumination exposure of 700 h.

Dynamic Reversible Oxidation-Reduction of Iodide Ions for Operationally Stable Perovskite Solar Cells under ISOS-L-3 Protocol

Despite rapid advancements in the photovoltaic efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), their operational stability remains a significant challenge for commercialization. This instability mainly arises from light-induced halide ion migration and subsequent oxidation into iodine (I2). The situation is exacerbated when considering the heat effects at elevated temperatures, leading to the volatilization of I2 and resulting in irreversible device degradation. Mercaptoethylammonium iodide (ESAI) is thus incorporated into perovskite as an additive to inhibit the oxidation of iodide anion (I-) and  the light-induced degradation pathway of FAPbI3→FAI+PbI2. Additionally, the formation of a thiol-disulfide/I--I2 redox pair within the perovskite film provides a dynamic mechanism for the continuous reduction of I2 under light and thermal stresses, facilitating the healing of iodine-induced degradations. This approach significantly enhances the operational stability of PSCs. Under the ISOS-L-3 testing protocol (maximum power point (MPP) tracking in an environment with relative humidity of ≈50% at ≈65 °C), the treated PSCs maintain 97% of their original power conversion efficieney (PCE) after 300 h of aging. In contrast, control devices exhibit almost complete degradation, primarily due to rapid thermal-induced I2 volatilization. These results demonstrate a promising strategy to overcome critical stability challenges in PSCs, particularly in scenarios involving thermal effects.

Synergistic Redox Modulation for High-Performance Nickel Oxide-Based Inverted Perovskite Solar Modules

Nickel oxide (NiOx)-based inverted perovskite solar cells stand as promising candidates for advancing perovskite photovoltaics towards commercialization, leveraging their remarkable stability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the interfacial redox reaction between high-valence Ni4+ and perovskite, alongside the facile conversion of iodide in perovskite into I2, significantly deteriorates the performance and reproducibility of NiOx-based perovskite photovoltaics. Here, potassium borohydride (KBH4) is introduced as a dual-action reductant, which effectively avoids the Ni4+/perovskite interface reaction and mitigates the iodide-to-I2 oxidation within perovskite film. This synergistic redox modulation significantly suppresses nonradiative recombination and increases the carrier lifetime. As a result, an impressive power conversion efficiency of 24.17% for NiOx-based perovskite solar cells is achieved, and a record efficiency of 20.2% for NiOx-based perovskite solar modules fabricated under ambient conditions. Notably, when evaluated using the ISOS-L-2 standard protocol, the module retains 94% of its initial efficiency after 2000 h of continuous illumination under maximum power point at 65 °C in ambient air.

Solvent-free preparation and thermocompression self-assembly: an exploration of performance improvement strategies for perovskite solar cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibit sufficient technological efficiency and economic competitiveness. However, their poor stability and scalability are crucial factors limiting their rapid development. Therefore, achieving both high efficiency and good stability is an urgent challenge. In addition, the preparation methods for PSCs are currently limited to laboratory-scale methods, so their commercialization requires further research. Effective packaging technology is essential to protect the PSCs from degradation by external environmental factors and ensure their long-term stability. The industrialization of PSCs is also inseparable from the preparation technology of perovskite thin films. This review discusses the solvent-free preparation of PSCs, shedding light on the factors that affect PSC performance and strategies for performance enhancement. Furthermore, this review analyzes the existing simulation techniques that have contributed to a better understanding of the interfacial evolution of PSCs during the packaging process. Finally, the current challenges and possible solutions are highlighted, providing insights to facilitate the development of highly efficient and stable PSC modules to promote their widespread application.

Defects and Defect Passivation in Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells have made significant strides in recent years. However, there are still challenges in terms of photoelectric conversion efficiency and long-term stability associated with perovskite solar cells. The presence of defects in perovskite materials is one of the important influencing factors leading to subpar film quality. Adopting additives to passivate defects within perovskite materials is an effective approach. Therefore, we first discuss the types of defects that occur in perovskite materials and the mechanisms of their effect on performance. Then, several types of additives used in perovskite solar cells are discussed, including ionic compounds, organic molecules, polymers, etc. This review provides guidance for the future development of more sustainable and effective additives to improve the performance of solar cells.

Eu-Based Porphyrin MOF Enables High-Performance Carbon-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

The low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of hole transport materials (HTM) - free carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) poses a challenge. Here, a novel 2D Eu-TCPP MOF (TCPP; [tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin]) sandwiched between the perovskite layer and the carbon electrode is used to realize an effective and stable HTM-free C-PSCs. Relying on the synergistic effect of both the metal-free TCPP ligand with a unique absorption spectrum and hydrophobicity and the EuO4(OH)2 chain in the Eu-TCPP MOF, defects are remarkably suppressed and light-harvesting capability is significantly boosted. Energy band alignment is achieved after Eu-TCPP MOF treatment, promoting hole collection. Förster resonance energy transfer results in improved light utilization and protects the perovskite from decomposition. As a result, the HTM-free C-PSCs with Eu-TCPP MOF reach a champion PCE of 18.13%. In addition, the unencapsulated device demonstrates outstanding thermal stability and UV resistance and keeps 80.6% of its initial PCE after 5500 h in a high-humidity environment (65%-85% RH).

Redox-Sensitive NiOx Stabilizing Perovskite Films for High-Performance Photovoltaics

Metal halide perovskite materials inherently possess imperfections, particularly under nonequilibrium conditions, such as exposure to light or heat. To tackle this challenge, we introduced stearate ligand-capped nickel oxide (NiOx), a redox-sensitive metal oxide with variable valence, into perovskite intermediate films. The integration of NiOx improved the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by offering multifunctional roles: (1) chemical passivation for ongoing defect repair, (2) energetic passivation to bolster defect tolerance, and (3) field-effect passivation to mitigate charge accumulation. Employing a synergistic approach that tailored these three passivation mechanisms led to a substantial increase in the devices' efficiencies. The target cell (0.12 cm2) and module (18 cm2) exhibited efficiencies of 24.0 and 22.9%, respectively. Notably, the encapsulated modules maintained almost 100 and 87% of the initial efficiencies after operating for 1100 h at the maximum power point (60 °C, 50% RH) and 2000 h of damp-heat testing (85 °C, 85% RH), respectively. Outdoor real-time tests further validated the commercial viability of the NiOx-assisted PSMs. The proposed passivation strategy provides a practical and uncomplicated approach for fabricating high-efficiency and stable photovoltaics.

Mechanical Durability and Flexibility in Perovskite Photovoltaics: Advancements and Applications

The remarkable progress in perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology has witnessed a remarkable leap in efficiency within the past decade. As this technology continues to mature, flexible PSCs (F-PSCs) are emerging as pivotal components for a wide array of applications, spanning from powering portable electronics and wearable devices to integrating seamlessly into electronic textiles and large-scale industrial roofing. F-PSCs characterized by their lightweight, mechanical flexibility, and adaptability for cost-effective roll-to-roll manufacturing, hold immense commercial potential. However, the persistent concerns regarding the overall stability and mechanical robustness of these devices loom large. This comprehensive review delves into recent strides made in enhancing the mechanical stability of F-PSCs. It covers a spectrum of crucial aspects, encompassing perovskite material optimization, precise crystal grain regulation, film quality enhancement, strategic interface engineering, innovational developed flexible transparent electrodes, judicious substrate selection, and the integration of various functional layers. By collating and analyzing these dedicated research endeavors, this review illuminates the current landscape of progress in addressing the challenges surrounding mechanical stability. Furthermore, it provides valuable insights into the persistent obstacles and bottlenecks that demand attention and innovative solutions in the field of F-PSCs.

Crystallization Kinetics of Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are considered ideal photovoltaic materials due to their variable crystal material composition and excellent photoelectric properties. However, this variability in composition leads to complex crystallization processes in the manufacturing of Metal halide perovskite (MHP) thin films, resulting in reduced crystallinity and subsequent performance loss in the final device. Thus, understanding and controlling the crystallization dynamics of perovskite materials are essential for improving the stability and performance of PSCs (Perovskite Solar Cells). To investigate the impact of crystallization characteristics on the properties of MHP films and identify corresponding modulation strategies, we primarily discuss the relevant aspects of MHP crystallization kinetics, systematically summarize theoretical methods, and outline modulation techniques for MHP crystallization, including solution engineering, additive engineering, and component engineering, which helps highlight the prospects and current challenges in perovskite crystallization kinetics.

Elevated Efficiency and Stability of Hole-Transport-Layer-Free Perovskite Solar Cells Triggered by Surface Engineering

Surface engineering is one of the important strategies to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, 2-chloro-1,3-dimethylimidazolidinium hexafluorophosphate (CIP) was introduced into PSCs to passivate the defects of the perovskite films. There are many F atoms in CIP molecules that have strong electronegativity and hydrophobicity. F groups can interact with Pb2+ defects, inhibit interface recombination, improve the interaction between the CIP ionic liquid and perovskite film, and reduce the defect density of perovskites, thus improving the stability of perovskite devices. Density functional theory calculation reveals that CIP can interact with uncoordinated Pb2+ in perovskites through coordination, reduce the defects of perovskite films, and inhibit nonradiation recombination. The ITO/SnO2/MAPbI3/CIP/carbon devices without hole transport layers possessed the highest PCE of 17.06%. Moreover, the unencapsulated device remains at 98.18% of the initial efficiency stored in 30-40% relative humidity for 850 h. This strategy provides an effective reference for enhancing the performance of PSCs.

Speciation of Lanthanide Metal Ion Dopants in Microcrystalline All-Inorganic Halide Perovskite CsPbCl3

Lanthanides are versatile modulators of optoelectronic properties owing to their narrow optical emission spectra across the visible and near-infrared range. Their use in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has recently gained prominence, although their fate in these materials has not yet been established at the atomic level. We use cesium-133 solid-state NMR to establish the speciation of all nonradioactive lanthanide ions (La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Sm2+, Eu3+, Eu2+, Gd3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+, Lu3+) in microcrystalline CsPbCl3. Our results show that all lanthanides incorporate into the perovskite structure of CsPbCl3 regardless of their oxidation state (+2, +3).

Mitigating Surface Defects in Tin-Based Perovskite Films with α-Tocopherol for Enhanced Photovoltaic Performance

Surface defects in tin-based perovskite films disrupt the periodic arrangement of atoms in crystals, making surface atoms more susceptible to interactions with water and oxygen molecules in the surrounding environment. The diffusion of oxygen ions into the perovskite interior leads to the formation of severe bulk defects, which compromises the performance of tin-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). As a result, surface defects are recognized as the primary source of degradation and require special attention. In this study, α-Tocopherol (also known as vitamin E) into tin-based perovskite films is introduced. Experimental results show that because of its larger volume, α-Tocopherol does not enter the perovskite lattice. Instead, it forms van der Waals and hydrogen bond interactions with the formamidine ion (FA+) and the [SnI6]4- octahedron at the perovskite terminals. Through α-Tocopherol passivation, both surface and interior oxidation of the perovskite are significantly suppressed as α-Tocopherol firmly embeds itself on the perovskite surface. Density functional theory analysis confirms the inhibition of I─Sn antisite defects (ISn) and Sn interstitial defects (Sni), which possess deep trap states within the bandgap. Ultimately, it is demonstrated that α-Tocopherol enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 9.19% to 13.14% and prolongs the lifetime of tin-based PSCs to over 50 days.

Current State and Future Perspectives of Printable Organic and Perovskite Solar Cells

Photovoltaic technology presents a sustainable solution to address the escalating global energy consumption and a reliable strategy for achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Emerging photovoltaic technologies, especially the printable organic and perovskite solar cells, have attracted extensive attention due to their rapidly transcending power conversion efficiencies and facile processability, providing great potential to revolutionize the global photovoltaic market. To accelerate these technologies to translate from the laboratory scale to the industrial level, it is critical to develop well-defined and scalable protocols to deposit high-quality thin films of photoactive and charge-transporting materials. Herein, the current state of printable organic and perovskite solar cells is summarized and the view regarding the challenges and prospects toward their commercialization is shared. Different printing techniques are first introduced to provide a correlation between material properties and printing mechanisms, and the optimization of ink formulation and film-formation during large-area deposition of different functional layers in devices are then discussed. Engineering perspectives are also discussed to analyze the criteria for module design. Finally, perspectives are provided regarding the future development of these solar cells toward practical commercialization. It is believed that this perspective will provide insight into the development of printable solar cells and other electronic devices.

Enhancing Ultraviolet Stability and Performance of Wide Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells Through Ultraviolet Light-Absorbing Passivator

Ultraviolet light (UV) has caused tremendous damage to perovskite solar cells (PSCs), degrading the perovskite and shortening their lifetime. Defects act as non-radiative recombination sites, accelerate the degradation process, reduce the efficiency of the device and weaken the stability of solar cell. In this work, to realize efficient and stable p-i-n wide bandgap solar cells under UV, a synergetic strategy utilizing UV light-absorbing passivator, (Trifluoroacetyl) benzotriazole (TFABI), enhance UV photostability and regulate the defect passivation is proposed. By using TFABI, the degradation of the perovskite absorption layer under UV light is suppressed, spectral response is enhanced and the Pb vacancy defects are passivated. As a result, the target device achieves an efficiency of 21.54%, exhibiting excellent long-term stability under 365 nm UV irradiation. After 60 h of irradiation, it retains 85% of its initial value (60 mW cm-2 , RH 25-30%, 25 °C).

Facile Hydrogen-Bonding Assisted Crystallization Modulation for Large-area High-quality CsPbI2 Br Films and Efficient Solar Cells

The thermally stable inorganic cesium-based perovskites promise efficient and stable photovoltaics. Unfortunately, the strong ionic bonds lead to uncontrollable rapid crystallization, making it difficult in fabricating large-area black-phase film for photovoltaics. Herein, we developed a facile hydrogen-bonding assisted strategy for modulating the crystallization of CsPbI2 Br to achieve uniform large-area phase-pure films with much-reduced defects. The simple addition of methylamine acetate in precursors not only promotes the formation of intermediate phase via hydrogen bonding to circumvent the direct crystallization of CsPbI2 Br from ionic precursors but also widens the film processing window, thus enabling to fabricate large-area high-quality phase-pure CsPbI2 Br film under benign conditions. Combining with stable dopant-free poly(3-hexylthiophene), the CsPbI2 Br solar cells achieve the record-high efficiencies of 18.14 % and 16.46 % for 0.1 cm2 and 1 cm2 active area, respectively. The obtained high efficiency of 38.24 % under 1000 lux illumination suggests its potential in indoor photovoltaics for powering the Internet of Things, etc.

Toward stabilization of formamidinium lead iodide perovskites by defect control and composition engineering

Phase instability poses a serious challenge to the commercialization of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3)-based solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Here, we combine density functional theory and machine learning molecular dynamics simulations, to investigate the mechanism driving the undesired α-δ phase transition of FAPbI3. Prevalent iodine vacancies and interstitials can significantly expedite the structural transition kinetics by inducing robust covalency during transition states. Extrinsically, the detrimental roles of atmospheric moisture and oxygen in degrading the FAPbI3 perovskite phase are also rationalized. Significantly, we discover the compositional design principles by categorizing that A-site engineering primarily governs thermodynamics, whereas B-site doping can effectively manipulate the kinetics of the phase transition in FAPbI3, highlighting lanthanide ions as promising B-site substitutes. A-B mixed doping emerges as an efficient strategy to synergistically stabilize α-FAPbI3, as experimentally demonstrated by substantially higher initial optoelectronic characteristics and significantly enhanced phase stability in Cs-Eu doped FAPbI3 as compared to its Cs-doped counterpart. This study provides scientific guidance for the design and optimization of long-term stable FAPbI3-based solar cells and other optoelectronic devices through defect control and synergetic composition engineering.

A universal ligand for lead coordination and tailored crystal growth in perovskite solar cells

Chemical environment and precursor-coordinating molecular interactions within a perovskite precursor solution can lead to important implications in structural defects and crystallization kinetics of a perovskite film. Thus, the opto-electronic quality of such films can be boosted by carefully fine-tuning the coordination chemistry of perovskite precursors via controllable introduction of additives, capable of forming intermediate complexes. In this work, we employed a new type of ligand, namely 1-phenylguanidine (PGua), which coordinates strongly with the PbI2 complexes in the perovskite precursor, forming new intermediate species. These strong interactions effectively retard the perovskite crystallization process and form homogeneous films with enlarged grain sizes and reduced density of defects. In combination with an interfacial treatment, the resulted champion devices exhibit a 24.6% efficiency with outstanding operational stability. Unprecedently, PGua can be applied in various PSCs with different perovskite compositions and even in both configurations: n-i-p and p-i-n, highlighting the universality of this ligand.

Progress and Application of Halide Perovskite Materials for Solar Cells and Light Emitting Devices

Halide perovskite materials have attracted worldwide attention in the photovoltaic area due to the rapid improvement in efficiency, from less than 4% in 2009 to 26.1% in 2023 with only a nanometer lever photo-active layer. Meanwhile, this nova star found applications in many other areas, such as light emitting, sensor, etc. This review started with the fundamentals of physics and chemistry behind the excellent performance of halide perovskite materials for photovoltaic/light emitting and the methods for preparing them. Then, it described the basic principles for solar cells and light emitting devices. It summarized the strategies including nanotechnology to improve the performance and the application of halide perovskite materials in these two areas: from structure-property relation to how each component in the devices affects the overall performance. Moreover, this review listed the challenges for the future applications of halide perovskite materials.

Bicyclopentadithiophene-Based Organic Semiconductor for Stable and High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells Exceeding 22

Well-performing organic-inorganic halide perovskites are susceptible to poor efficiency and instability due to their various defects at the interphases, grain boundaries (GBs), and surfaces. In this study, an in situ method is utilized for effectively passivating the under-coordinated Pb2+ defects of perovskite with new non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) (INXBCDT; X = H, Cl, and Br) through their carbonyl and cyano functional groups during the antisolvent dripping process. It reveals that the bicyclopentadithiophene (BCDT) core with highly electron-withdrawing end-capping groups passivates GBs and boosts perovskite grain growth. This effective defect passivation decreases the trap density to increase the carrier recombination lifetime of the perovskite film. As a result, bromo-substituted dicyanomethylene indanone (INBr)-end-capped BCDT (INBrBCDT-b8; 3a)-passivated devices exhibit the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.20% (vs those of 18.09% obtained for perovskite films without passivation) upon an optimized film preparation process. Note that devices treated with more soluble 2-ethylhexyl-substituted compounds (1a, 2a, and 3a) exhibit higher PCE than those treated with less soluble octyl-substituted compounds (1b, 2b, and 3b). It is also worth noting that BCDT is a cost-effective six-ring core that is easier to synthesize with a higher yield and therefore much cheaper than those with highly fused-ring cores. In addition, a long-term stability test in a glovebox for 1500 h reveals that the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on a perovskite absorber treated with compound 3a maintain ∼90% of their initial PCE. This is the first example of the simplest high-conjugation additive for perovskite film to achieve a PCE greater than 22% of the corresponding lead-based PSCs.

Self-Healing Behavior of the Metal Halide Perovskites and Photovoltaics

Perovskite solar cells have achieved rapid progress in the new-generation photovoltaic field, but the commercialization lags behind owing to the device stability issue under operational conditions. Ultimately, the instability issue is attributed to the soft lattice of ionic perovskite crystal. In brief, metal halide perovskite materials are susceptible to structural instability processes, including phase segregation, component loss, lattice distortion, and fatigue failure under harsh external stimuli such as high humidity, strong irradiation, wide thermal cycles, and large stress. Developing self-healing perovskites to further improve the unsatisfactory operational stability of their photoelectric devices under harsh stimuli has become a cutting-edge hotspot in this field. This self-healing behavior needs to be studied more comprehensively. Therefore, the self-healing behavior of the metal halide perovskites and photovoltaics is classified and summarized in this review. By discussing recent advances, underlying mechanisms, strategies, and existing challenges, this review provides perspectives on self-healing of perovskite solar cells in the future.

Accelerated Redox Reactions Enable Stable Tin-Lead Mixed Perovskite Solar Cells

The facile oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+ poses an inherent challenge that limits the efficiency and stability of tin-lead mixed (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and all-perovskite tandem devices. In this work, we discover the sustainable redox reactions enabling self-healing Sn-Pb perovskites, where their intractable oxidation degradation can be recovered to their original state under light soaking. Quantitative and operando spectroscopies are used to investigate the redox chemistry, revealing that metallic Pb0 from the photolysis of perovskite reacts with Sn4+ to regenerate Pb2+ and Sn2+ spontaneously. Given the sluggish redox reaction kinetics, V3+ /V2+ ionic pair is designed as an effective redox shuttle to accelerate the recovery of Sn-Pb perovskites from oxidation. The target Sn-Pb PSCs enabled by V3+ /V2+ ionic pair deliver an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.22 % and excellent device lifespan, retaining nearly 90 % of its initial PCE after maximum power point tracking under light for 1,000 hours.

Rejuvenating Aged Perovskite Quantum Dots for Efficient Solar Cells

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation solar cells owing to its remarkable optoelectronic properties and solution processability. However, the optoelectronic properties of PQDs suffer from severe degradation in storage due to the dynamically binding ligands, predominantly affecting photovoltaic applications. Herein, an in situ defect healing treatment (DHT) is reported to effectively rejuvenate aged PQDs. Systematically, experimental studies and theoretical calculations are performed to fundamentally understand the causes leading to the recovered optoelectronic properties of aged PQDs. The results reveal that the I3 - anions produced from tetra-n-octylammonium iodide and iodine could strongly anchor on the surface matrix defects of aged PQDs, substantially diminishing the nonradiative recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Meanwhile, an DHT could also renovate the morphology of aged PQDs and thus improve the stacking orientation of PQD solids, substantially ameliorating charge carrier transport within PQD solids. Consequently, by using a DHT, the PQD solar cell (PQDSC) yields a high efficiency of up to 15.88%, which is comparable with the PQDSCs fabricated using fresh PQDs. Meanwhile, the stability of PQDSCs fabricated using the rejuvenated PQDs is also largely improved.

Enhancing the upconversion of Er3+ incorporated BaTiO3 by introducing oxygen vacancies

Lanthanide-incorporated crystals display the phenomenon of upconversion (UC), wherein near-infrared (NIR) light is converted into ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) emission with a narrow bandwidth. This unique photophysical property renders lanthanide UC materials highly promising for diverse applications. However, the limited quantum efficiency (∼3%) hinders the broader utilization of UC materials. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on overcoming this low efficiency. Notably, it has been observed that manipulation of the site symmetry in UC materials significantly enhances their UC efficiency. In this study, we investigate the UC enhancement of Er3+ incorporated BaTiO3 (E-BT) crystals through the introduction of oxygen vacancies (OV). The OV were created using a post-heat treatment method, and the annealing time was varied to control the quantity of OV. An optimal annealing time of 6 hours was determined for efficient OV generation, beyond which the OV content decreased. Remarkably, E-BT crystals with OV exhibited up to three-fold greater UC compared to those without OV. This outcome suggests that OV induce symmetry changes in the E-BT crystal structure. Furthermore, the degree of UC enhancement in E-BT was found to be proportional to the amount of OV present.

Directional Defect Management in Perovskites by In Situ Decom-position of Organic Metal Chalcogenides for Efficient Solar Cells

Directional defects management in polycrystalline perovskite film with inorganic passivator is highly demanded while yet realized for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we develop a directional passivation strategy employing a two-dimensional (2D) material, Cu-(4-mercaptophenol) (Cu-HBT), as a passivator precursor. Cu-HBT combines the merits of the targeted modification from organic passivator and excellent stability offered by inorganic passivator. Featuring with dense organic functional motifs on its surfaces, Cu-HBT has the capability to "find" and fasten to the Pb defect sites in perovskites through coordination interactions during a spin-coating process. During subsequent annealing treatment, the organic functional motifs cleave from Cu-HBT and convert in situ into p-type semiconductors, Cu2 S and PbS. The resultant Cu2 S and PbS not only serve as stable inorganic passivators on the perovskite surface, significantly enhancing cell stability, but also facilitate efficient charge extraction and transport, resulting in an impressive efficiency of up to 23.5 %. This work contributes a new defect management strategy by directionally yielding the stable inorganic passivators for highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Oriented Perovskite Film from Laser Recrystallization in Magnetic Field

The orientation of crystals on the substrate and the presence of defects are critical factors in electro-optic performance. However, technical approaches to guide the orientational crystallization of electro-optical thin films remain challenging. Here, a novel physical method called magnetic-field-assisted pulse laser annealing (MAPLA) for controlling the orientation of perovskite crystals on substrates is reported. By inducing laser recrystallization of perovskite crystals under a magnetic field and with magnetic nanoparticles, the optical and magnetic fields are found to guide the orientational gathering of perovskite units into nanoclusters, resulting in perovskite crystals with preferred lattice orientation in (110) and (220) perpendicular to the substrate. The perovskite crystals obtained by MAPLA exhibit significantly larger grain size and fewer defects compared to those from pulsed laser annealing (PLA) and traditional thermal annealing, resulting in improved carrier lifetime and mobility. Furthermore, MAPLA demonstrates enhanced device performance, increasing responsivity and detectivity by two times, and photocurrent by nearly three orders compared with PLA. The introduction of Fe2 O3 nanoparticles during MAPLA not only improves crystal size and orientation but also significantly enhances long-term stability by preventing Pb2+ reduction. The MAPLA method has great potential for fabricating many electro-optical thin films with desired device properties and stability.

Stabilizing Precursor Solution and Controlling Crystallization Kinetics Simultaneously for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

The efficiency of metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has skyrocketed; however, defects created by aging precursor solutions and during crystallization pose a significant barrier to the reproducibility and efficiency of solar cells. In this work, fluoro-N,N,N″,N″-tetramethylformamidinium hexafluorophosphate (F-(CH3 )4 CN2 PF6 , abbreviated as TFFH) is introduced to stabilize precursor solution and improve crystallization dynamics simultaneously for high-performance formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3 )-based perovskite indoor photovoltaics. The TFFH stabilizes the precursor solution by inhibiting oxidation of I- and reducing newly generated I0 to I- , and passivates undercoordinated Pb2+ by interacting with the Pb─I framework. Time-resolved optical diagnostics show prolonged perovskite crystallization dynamics and in situ defect passivation due to the presence of strong FA+ ···TFFH···Pb─I interaction. Simultaneous regulation of precursor solution and crystallization dynamics guarantee larger perovskite grain sizes, better crystal orientation, fewer defects and more efficient charge extraction in PSCs. The optimized PSCs achieve improved reproducibility and better stability and reach an efficiency of 42.43% at illumination of 1002 lux, which is the highest efficiency among all indoor photovoltaics. It is anticipated that the concurrent stabilization of solutions and regulation of crystallization dynamics will emerge as a prevalent approach for enhancing the reproducibility and efficiency of perovskite.

Extrinsic Interstitial Ions in Metal Halide Perovskites: A Review

Perovskite solar cells have rapidly developed as a promising technology for the next generation of low-cost photovoltaics, receiving enormous attention from researchers and industries. Compared to traditional semiconducting materials, metal halide perovskite exhibits outstanding tolerance to extrinsic ions. At a certain range of doping concentration, the interstitial occupancy of extrinsic ions provides appealing benefits to the perovskite films, contributing to higher performance and stability of the devices. This review summarizes the research progress of interstitial ions for metal halide perovskite, providing insights into the mechanism and identification of interstitial doping of extrinsic ions, covering the benefits of interstitial ions in regulating crystal growth, inhibiting ion migration, and reducing defect density. Finally, based on the latest progress and findings, further topics and directions of research on interstitial ions in metal halide perovskite are proposed to advance the understanding of interstitial ions in perovskite and promote the development of perovskite photovoltaic technology.

Bifunctional Interface Passivation via Copper Acetylacetonate for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Manipulating interface defects can minimize interfacial nonradiative recombination, thus increasing the stability and performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, copper acetylacetonate [Cu(acac)2] as a passivator is used to treat the interface between Spiro-OMeTAD and perovskite. Owing to the strong chelation, the uncoordinated Pb2+ could react with -C═O/-COH functional groups, firmly anchoring acetylacetonate at this interface or the grain boundaries (GBs) of perovskite films to construct multiple ligand bridges, accompanied by the p-type copper iodide formation with copper substituting lead. Simultaneously, Cu+-Cu2+ pairs transfer electrons from Pb0 to I0, suppressing deep level defects of Pb0 and I0 near the perovskite interface. These can be beneficial to hole-transferring. Moreover, the Schiff base complexes with hydrophobicity, from the reaction of acetylacetonate with perovskite, can lead to tightly packed adjacent perovskite surfaces and self-seal the GBs of the perovskite, inhibiting moisture diffusion for long-term stability. Consequently, the Cu(acac)2-based PSC has achieved more than 24% champion efficiency while retaining ca. 92% of the initial power conversion efficiency after 1680 h of storage.

Layered Low-Dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson Perovskites: From Material Properties to Photovoltaic Device Performance

Layered low-dimensional halide perovskites (LDPs) with multiple quantum well structure have shown increasing research interest in photovoltaic solar cell applications owing to their intrinsic moisture stability and favorable photophysical properties in comparison with their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts. The most common LDPs are Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases and Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phases, both of which have made significant research advances in efficiency and stability. However, distinct interlayer cations between RP and DJ phase lead to disparate chemical bonds and different perovskite structures, which endow RP and DJ perovskite with distinctive chemical and physical properties. Plenty of reviews have reported the research progress of LDPs but no summary has elaborated from the perspective of the merits and drawbacks of the RP and DJ phases. Herein, in this review, we offer a comprehensive expound on the merits and promises of RP and DJ LDPs from their chemical structure, physicochemical properties, and photovoltaic performance research progress aiming to provide a new insight into the dominance of RP and DJ phases. Then, we reviewed the recent progress on the synthesis and implementation of RP and DJ LDPs thin films and devices, as well as their optoelectronic properties. Finally, we discussed the possible strategies to resolve existing toughs to realize the desired high-performance LDPs solar cells.

Trivalent Europium-Doped CsCl Quantum Dots for MA-Free Perovskite Solar Cells with Inherent Bandgap through Lattice Strain Compensation

Cesium-formamidinium (Cs-FA) perovskites have garnered widespread interest owing to their excellent thermal- and photostability in achieving stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, Cs-FA perovskite typically suffers from Cs+ and FA+ mismatches, affecting the Cs-FA morphology and lattice distortion, resulting in an enlarged bandgap (Eg ). In this work, "upgraded" CsCl, Eu3+ -doped CsCl quantum dots, are developed to solve the key issues in Cs-FA PSCs and also exploit the advantage of Cs-FA PSCs on stability. The introduction of Eu3+ promotes the formation of high-quality Cs-FA films by adjusting the Pb-I cluster. CsCl:Eu3+ also offsets the local strain and lattice contraction induced by Cs+ , which maintains the inherent Eg of FAPbI3 and decreases the trap density. Finally, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.13% is obtained with an excellent short-circuit current density of 26.10 mA cm-2 . The unencapsulated devices show excellent humidity stability and storage stability, and an initial PCE of 92.2% within 500 h under continuous light illumination, and bias voltage conditions is achieved. This study provides a universal strategy to address the inherent issues of Cs-FA devices and maintain the stability of MA-free PSCs to satisfy future commercial criteria.

Triiodide Attacks the Organic Cation in Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites: Mechanism and Suppression

Molecular I2 can be produced from iodide-based lead perovskites under thermal stress; triiodide, I3 - , is formed from this I2 and I- . Triiodide attacks protic cation MA+ - or FA+ -based lead halide perovskites (MA+ , methylammonium; FA+ , formamidinium) as explicated through solution-based nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies: triiodide has strong hydrogen-bonding affinity for MA+ or FA+ , which leads to their deprotonation and perovskite decomposition. Triiodide is a catalyst for this decomposition that can be obviated through perovskite surface treatment with thiol reducing agents. In contrast to methods using thiol incorporation into perovskite precursor solutions, no penetration of the thiol into the bulk perovskite is observed, yet its surface application stabilizes the perovskite against triiodide-mediated thermal stress. Thiol applied to the interface between FAPbI3 and Spiro-OMeTAD ("Spiro") prevents oxidized iodine species penetration into Spiro and thus preserves its hole-transport efficacy. Surface-applied thiol affects the perovskite work function; it ameliorates hole injection into the Spiro overlayer, thus improving device performance. It helps to increase interfacial adhesion ("wetting"): fewer voids are observed at the Spiro/perovskite interface if thiols are applied. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) incorporating interfacial thiol treatment maintain over 80% of their initial power conversion efficiency (PCE) after 300 h of 85 °C thermal stress.

Benzophenone: A Small Molecule Additive for Enhanced Performance and Stability of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

In this study, we investigated the impact of benzophenone (BP), a small molecule additive, on the performance and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Specifically, we introduced BP into the perovskite precursor solution of FAPbI3 to fabricate PSCs with an ITO/PEDOT:PSS/BP:FAPbI3/PCBM/C60/PCB/Ag architecture. The incorporation of BP with an optimum concentration of 2 mg mL-1 significantly enhanced the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the inverted PSC from 13.12 to 18.84% with negligible hysteresis. Notably, the BP-based PSCs retained ∼90% of their initial PCE after being stored in ambient air with 30% relative humidity at 25 °C for 700 h. In contrast, control devices showed rapid degradation, retaining only 30% of their initial value within 300 h under the same conditions. We attributed the superior performance and stability of the BP-based PSCs to the grain boundary passivation of the perovskite film. The improvement was mainly attributed to the intermolecular interaction between the O-donor Lewis base BP material and both Pb2+ and FA+ in FAPbI3. This effectively suppresses trap-assisted recombination and promotes the conversion of the δ-phase to photoactive and stable α-phase FAPbI3. Overall, our findings suggest that BP is a promising additive for improving the performance and stability of inverted PSCs.

Dimethyl Ferrocene-Induced Ambient-Processed High-Quality Films toward Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells for Industrial Application

Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently made significant progress with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) boosted from 3.8% to a certified one over 26.1%, partially benefiting from the high-quality perovskite film enabled by the effective one-step spin-coating route. However, an extra antisolvent step with poor controllability and producibility is often involved in such a process, and some intrinsic defects are generated inevitably, especially in ambient atmospheric conditions, thus fundamentally limiting the commercialization of PSCs. Here, we introduce 1,1'dimethyl ferrocene into methylammonium lead halide precursor, which could not only recover the defects within perovskite film but also simplify the process without the extra antisolvent step. Accordingly, a dense and uniform perovskite film with large grains has been obtained under ambient conditions, which has much lower defect density, better stability against moisture penetration, and enhanced thermal tolerance than the control one, delivering a champion PCE of 16.92%. Current work sheds light on the simplified air-processed strategy for high-quality perovskite films, which might pave the way for exploring efficient and stable PSCs toward industrial applications.

Atomic-scale imaging of ytterbium ions in lead halide perovskites

Lanthanide-doped lead halide perovskites have demonstrated great potential for photoelectric applications. However, there is a long-standing controversy about the existence of lanthanide ions, e.g., whether the doping of Ln3+ is successful or not; the substituting sites of Ln3+ in lead halide perovskites are unclear. We directly identify the doped Yb3+ in CsPbCl3 perovskites by using the state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopy and three-dimensional atom probe tomography at atomic scale. Different from the previous assumptions and/or results, we evidence that Yb3+ simultaneously replace Pb2+ and occupy the lattice interstitial sites. Furthermore, we directly observe the cluster phenomenon of CsPbCl3 single crystal at near atomic scale. Density functional theory modeling further confirms and explains the mechanisms of our findings. Our findings thus provide an atomic-level understanding of the doping mechanism in perovskites and will stimulate a further thinking of the doping effect on the performance of perovskites.

Performance Improvement of Lead-Based Halide Perovskites through B-Site Ion-Doping Strategies

Owing to their excellent properties, lead halide perovskites have attracted extensive attention in the photoelectric field. Presently, the certified power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells has reached 25.7%, the specific detectivity of perovskite photodetectors has exceeded 1014 Jones, and the external quantum efficiency of perovskite-based light-emitting diode has exceeded 26%. However, their practical applications are limited by the inherent instability induced by the perovskite structure due to moisture, heat, and light. Therefore, one of the widely used strategies to address the issue is to replace partial ions of the perovskites with ions of smaller radii to shorten the bond length between halides and metal cations, improving the bond energy and enhancing the perovskite stability. Particularly, the B-site cation in the perovskite structure can affect the size of eight cubic octahedrons and their gap. However, the X-site can only affect four such voids. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress in B-site ion-doping strategies for lead halide perovskites and provides some perspectives for further performance improvements.

Tailoring passivators for highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

There is an ongoing global effort to advance emerging perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and many of these endeavours are focused on developing new compositions, processing methods and passivation strategies. In particular, the use of passivators to reduce the defects in perovskite materials has been demonstrated to be an effective approach for enhancing the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of PSCs. Organic passivators have received increasing attention since the late 2010s as their structures and properties can readily be modified. First, this Review discusses the main types of defect in perovskite materials and reviews their properties. We examine the deleterious impact of defects on device efficiency and stability and highlight how defects facilitate extrinsic degradation pathways. Second, the proven use of different passivator designs to mitigate these negative effects is discussed, and possible defect passivation mechanisms are presented. Finally, we propose four specific directions for future research, which, in our opinion, will be crucial for unlocking the full potential of PSCs using the concept of defect passivation.

Additive Conformational Engineering To Improve the PbI2 Framework for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

The PbI2 framework is critical for two-step fabricated perovskite solar cells. This study investigates the effects of introducing two functional urea-based molecules, biuret (BU) and dithiobiuret (DTBU), into the PbI2 precursor solution on the absorber layer and overall device performance. BU, which contains C═O, enhanced device performance and stability, whereas DTBU, which contains C═S, had negative effects. Research analysis revealed the differences in the spatial structures of the two urea-based molecules. The introduction of symmetrical BU molecules facilitated the crystallization of PbI2, whereas the introduction of DTBU with a twisted molecular structure led to inferior crystallization performance of PbI2. The perovskite thin film, obtained by introducing BU into the PbI2 precursor solution, demonstrated superior performance, characterized by a decreased defect density and an extended carrier lifetime. The device performance and stability were enhanced, resulting in higher open-circuit voltage and fill factor. The highest achieved power conversion efficiency was 23.50%. After 1300 h of storage under unpackaged conditions at 30-40% humidity, the devices maintained 93% of their initial efficiency. Conversely, the devices prepared with DTBU doping exhibited inferior performance and stability, displaying power conversion efficiency below 10% and faster degradation under the same humidity conditions.

Light- and Chemical-Doping-Induced Magnetic Behavior of Eu Molecular Systems

Variable temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (VT-EPR) was used to investigate the role of the environment and oxidation states of several coordinated Eu compounds. We find that while Eu(III) chelating complexes are diamagnetic, simple chemical reduction results in the formation of paramagnetic species. In agreement with the distorted D3h symmetry of Eu molecular complexes investigated in this study, the EPR spectrum of reduced complexes showed axially symmetric signals (g⊥ = 2.001 and g∥ = 1.994) that were successfully simulated with two Eu isotopes with nuclear spin 5/2 (151Eu and 153Eu with 48% and 52% natural abundance, respectively) and nuclear g-factors 151Eu/153Eu = 2.27. Illumination of water-soluble complex Eu(dipic)3 at 4 K led to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) that resulted in the formation of Eu(II) in a rhombic environment (gx = 2.006, gy = 1.995, gz = 1.988). The existence of LMCT affects the luminescence of Eu(dipic)3, and pre-reduction of the complex to Eu(II)(dipic)3 reversibly reduces red luminescence with the appearance of a weak CT blue luminescence. Furthermore, encapsulation of a large portion of the dipic ligand with Cucurbit[7]uril, a pumpkin-shaped macrocycle, inhibited ligand-to-metal charge transfer, preventing the formation of Eu(II) upon illumination.

Stabilization of photoactive phases for perovskite photovoltaics

Interest in photovoltaics (PVs) based on Earth-abundant halide perovskites has increased markedly in recent years owing to the remarkable properties of these materials and their suitability for energy-efficient and scalable solution processing. Formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI₃)-rich perovskite absorbers have emerged as the frontrunners for commercialization, but commercial success is reliant on the stability meeting the highest industrial standards and the photoactive FAPbI₃ phase suffers from instabilities that lead to degradation - an effect that is accelerated under working conditions. Here, we critically assess the current understanding of these phase instabilities and summarize the approaches for stabilizing the desired phases, covering aspects from fundamental research to device engineering. We subsequently analyse the remaining challenges for state-of-the-art perovskite PVs and demonstrate the opportunities to enhance phase stability with ongoing materials discovery and in operando analysis. Finally, we propose future directions towards upscaling perovskite modules, multijunction PVs and other potential applications.

High-performance flexible organic field effect transistors with print-based nanowires

Polymer nanowire (NW) organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) integrated on highly aligned large-area flexible substrates are candidate structures for the development of high-performance flexible electronics. This work presents a universal technique, coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet (CFEJ) printing technology, to fabricate highly aligned 90-nm-diameter polymer arrays. This method allows for the preparation of uniformly shaped and precisely positioned nanowires directly on flexible substrates without transfer, thus ensuring their electrical properties. Using indacenodithiophene-co-benzothiadiazole (IDT-BT) and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8-BT) as example materials, 5 cm2 arrays were prepared with only minute size variations, which is extremely difficult to do using previously reported methods. According to 2D-GIXRD analysis, the molecules inside the nanowires mainly adopted face-on π-stacking crystallite arrangements. This is quite different from the mixed arrangement of thin films. Nanowire-based OFETs exhibited a high average hole mobility of 1.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and good device uniformity, indicating the applicability of CFEJ printing as a potential batch manufacturing and integration process for high-performance, scalable polymer nanowire-based OFET circuits. This technique can be used to fabricate various polymer arrays, enabling the use of organic polymer semiconductors in large-area, high-performance electronic devices and providing a new path for the fabrication of flexible displays and wearable electronics in the future.

Anti-corrosion strategy to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells

In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been considered as one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies due to their solution processing, cost effectiveness, and excellent performance. The highest certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) achieved to date is 25.8%, which is approaching the best PCE of 26.81% achieved for silicon-based cells. However, perovskite materials are susceptible to various aging stressors, such as humidity, oxygen, temperature, and electrical bias, which hinder the industrialization of perovskite photovoltaic technologies. In this review, we discuss the lifetime of PSCs from the perspective of corrosion science. On one hand, benefiting from a series of anti-corrosion strategies (passivation, surface coating, machining etc.) used in corrosion science, the stability of perovskite devices is remarkably enhanced; on the other hand, given that perovskites are soft crystal lattices, which are different from traditional metals, the revealed degradation processes and specific methods to improve device operation stability can be applied to the field of corrosion, which can enrich and expand corrosion science.

Regulating Crystallization and Lead Leakage of Perovskite Solar Cell Via Novel Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Despite the unprecedented progress in lead-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the toxicity and leakage of lead from degraded PSCs triggered by deep-level defects and poor crystallization quality increase environmental risk and become a critical challenge for eco-friendly PSCs. Here, a novel 2D polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) (C₅ NH₅ )₄ (C₃ N₂ H₅ )₂ Zn₃ (H₈ P₄ Mo₆ O₃₁ )₂ ·2H₂ O (POMOF) is ingeniously devised to address these issues. Note that the integration of POM endows POMOF with great advantages of electrical conductivity and charge mobility. Ordered POMOF induces the crystallization of high-quality perovskite film and eliminates lead-based defects to improve internal stability. The resultant PSCs achieve a superior power conversion efficiency (23.3%) accompanied by improved stability that maintains ≈90% of its original efficiency after 1600 h. Meanwhile, POMOF with phosphate groups effectively prevents lead leakage through in situ chemical anchoring and adsorption methods to reduce environmental risk. This work provides an effective strategy to minimize lead-based defects and leakage in sustainable PSCs through multi-functional POM-based MOF material.
